Saturday at long last, and it is still that pesky racing show taking up all the headlines. Actually there were not that many yesterday, except from a certain Jon Waldock who tweeted that he spotted Franck, and just at the thought of him being there, I got all giggly, so it's a good thing we didn't go this year. Anyway, here are some of the things we're up to:
- There seems to be a lot of talk about Twitter at the moment, as we suddenly realised there are certain members of the Sidepodcommunity who passed the 9,000 tweet mark and that pretty much blew our minds. Mr C is somewhere in the late 3,000s whilst I still have yet to reach 1k. We really must tweet more. This also seems like a good opportunity to plug the SPC Twitter list on the playground.
- We've got another great guest post from Steven, taking a look at the history of another driver in F1, and particularly at some of the safety aspects in the sport. Don't forget if you have an idea for a guest post, we are all ears!
- I also want to plug this week's Friday Fun, because although it is no longer Friday, it really is a good one. Try and fit in as many song lyrics from a particular band in a made up F1 related press release. It's sometimes easy, sometimes hard, depending on which artist you pick. If you haven't had a go already, please do, we're really enjoying reading them.
That will do for now. It turns out we're not doing a live show this weekend, so ignore what the calendar says. However, I will see you in the comments.
I feel rather unenthralled about the weekend. Not much going on up here.
I'm off to see Avatar in 10 hours, so good night everyone!
Night, let us know what you think..
Today's the day I become James May! :D
I've got 3 podcast to write (two that none of you know about *insert spooky music here*) and my girlfriends coming down tomorrow for the day.
Should be a good weekend
OOOOH, it's James May's birthday today.
Are you starting some sort of James May fan club?
Quite possibly.
Oooh I'd join, he is rather awesome, isn't he? :D
As it's secretly me: Yes, yes I am awesome.
Best of luck with that. I heard of a good fan site about a f1 driver sometime. Might be of some use.
Oh no, not again... ;)
Hahaha, oh dear I won't tell you that whenever James (or you) are on the tv my Mum always refers to him as 'your James'. I may have a slight weird crush on him.... :D
It seems like a lot of women do, looking at this facebook page for him!
You know, there is something about him... it's probably the hair XD
Erm, yes. I need his magical hair, clearly then... :P
Hello.
ello! how are you?
Yep, I think actually you're quite right obsessing over it. Are you gonna dye your hair too?
and since when did you have capital L
evening
No, don't have the dye to. And I'd look ridiculous when it goes back flat by the time I get back to school.
extremely shattered. this week has frankly been awful in terms of stress levels.. but it's over now, just one more week of stress and i can get myself back to normal. How is everyone else?
i can change it back?.. i tried it the other day and no one noticed/ i forgot to change it back ;)
Ah fair enough. Remember we need pics :)
It makes me smile when I see on my Facebook wall: 'Thomas commented on James May's status.' Makes me feel cool. :)
i think i prefer it lower case :)
I'm here two minutes and it seems the doohickey has forgotten me/hates me. i have a message
'Comment data could not be parsed.'
whatever that means...
Mornin lou. I'd say relieved.
Shall have pictures taken as it's done and when my friends have finished destroying my hair.
Aww *sends de-stressing vibes* I'm feeling much better now thanks :) Feeling kinda hyper now, too much sleep!
relieved? *has been out of the loop this last week*
Jon, did you get any more recordings today or are you saving it for a podcast?
i think the combination of alevels.. coursework, loads of retakes and snow hasn't helped matters. Some was self inflicted though since i stayed up till 3am last night completing a friends birthday present (i compiled a sketchbook full of every photo i've taken at an event we've been to together in the last 7 years....)
I got 1 more, and a couple from yesterday but i think i'm going to keep them for podcasts. i did everything too fast yesterday and so saw the majority of people i'd wanted to see. although then you get home, start reading your bumf and discover that you've missed people! boo
... Spent way too much time panicking last night.
Aww, thats a nice present.
Yep, sounds stressy indeed! But aww that's such a lovely idea for a gift!
Probably always be that way :-)
Updated with pluggery.
Helps if the link is visable, sorry
https://twitter.com/SauberRG/status/7793036111
ya! thank ye. i just got the pingback email :)
it took ages to do, but she loved it. i have learnt one thing though, double sided tape is evil. while pealing off the back of it i managed to cut my finger several times.
woooooooooooooo
well done :)
Congrats!
I'm sure she did and muchly appreciated all your efforts and injuries!
Oooh yes, congrats!
Thanks Jon, Pat and Saira :)
Gotta sleep. Night all
For Mr C/Mrs C when you're next around... no idea why, and i haven't changed anything, but for some reason every time i comment i get this message. no idea what it means, but it keeps coming up, am using chrome on vista, thought you should know. :)
night!!
Night mate.
Night
I've been trusted with making sandwiches for me and my dad for our trip to Norwich Airport. Since when have I been good at making sandwiches??!??!
Ah even I can make sandwiches! Why are you going to the airport?
We're visiting Air Traffic Control. I did it a couple of years ago, but now Scouts want go. I can't make sandwiches, but I can cook a three course meal!
Sounds cool. Haha I can't cook meals at all but I can do sandwiches, we'd make a good team!
Yep, definitely. You can be in charge of bread with things in between it, and I'll do my Gordon Ramsey impression.
Okay, it's a deal!
Excellent! We do talk about some odd things late at night, don't we?
I am off for the night. Mainly to play Football Manager. So night all and of course, lotsa love.
Haha, I guess we do! Actually you're probably one of my fave new people that I've met recently :)
YAY!
Yay indeed, I do like having random conversations late at night!
See ya
It used to be a hobby of mine, when I was on study leave...
Morning all. I am on my way too kooyong. 32 degrees at the moment, its a perfect tennis watching day!
Oh I always end up talking rubbish at this time of night but it's all the better for having someone to share it with
I talk rubbish all the time. It just gets worse the closer it is to 3 am.
Morning. Sounds pretty good!
Morning!
Oh my!!! i'm just catching up with tweets... i love Alonso's amazing new helmet design for next year!! oh goodness it's lovely!...
Oh me too, I do tend to ramble on way too much and have crazy moments, like I've just had...
morning
Very reminiscent to his 2008 design, just with added 'swoosh'.
I literally go mad at 3 am, I discovered in the summer. Literally.
oh i decided i had better stop for water and my tram came when i was in the shop and the next one is ages away :( i hope i dont have to wait for the train as well or i might miss some djokovic!
it's blue i [heart] blue... it's so pretty and gorgeous.. hehe i love it :) i'm very excited about the ferrari 2009 line up.
What, Kimi and Massa / Badoer / Fisi? :)
Well I'm never far from crazy either, you'll see if you stupidly keep on talking to me, lol
Oh yes, I learn fast!
oh that's rotten luck!! i hope you managed to catch your train soon!! take lots of pics when you get there!! :)
oops... sorry, 2010 :)
I know, I was just taking the Mickey Bliss ;)
i have taken two cameras! Mostly to compare the performance of them, but there shall be lots of (bad) photos. I wish i had a fraction of your skill miss lou!
you sound like me!! :P
i swear most of it is luck ;) but thank you miss amy :)
Oh dear...
Yeah. He can break his coccyx faster than anybody!
i have arrived at the train station and the train is 9 minutes away. Then its a 14 minute journey so i shall make it with time to spare!
Bedtime for me, later than planned seeing as I have to be up at 6.30 to get to the show but at least I have been productive with the new site :-)
Will be tweeting during the day but only via SMS so have turned replies off 'cos I don't really understand them in texts. Might be able to access SPC or twitter.com through 3G if there's time/battery..
Bye!
Oh damn, I had just come up with a brilliant piece of stand-up humour, and now I've forgotten it.
wohoo! :)
Haha, so I hear!
#totallyanaccident
It's worrying that I kinda like this song. It's shameful, really.
Okay, you can't leave it like that! Which song?
Starstrukk by 3OH!3. Terrible, I know. Totally not my usual taste.
I don't think I know it, but I won't judge you as I adore some truly awful stuff
boo this train doesnt announce which station is next. I have to pay attention!
Oh no, I'm lucky, my station is often the last of the line! Good thing too as I often fall asleep on trains...
Oh good. Time for something better, I think.
i think i shall manage because i have to go past the tennis club because the station is on the other side of the road. Sleeping on trains is so easy, i could quite easily wake up in glen waverley. And i dont even know where that is!
time for sleep, night everyone!!
cant wait to see the photos amy!! :)
xx
Well my itunes has just gone from some dire song from a Dawson's Creek soundtrack to Razorlight.... sums up my collection really :D
Night lou :)
mine's pretty odd too, has a lot of stuff way before my time, like Led Zeppelin and The Eagles, but has modern artists like Muse and The Killers.
Ah cool, I love the Killers but I do also have a secret passion for cheesy pop crap too :D Like Britney for example...
i am here! My view is good! I shall try drop.io from my broken phone.
Good Lord! *gasp* ;)
Concidering how many times I've come close to falling asleep in my lessons the past few days, staying up till 2am really isn't my greatest idea ever. Think it's time for bed.
Ooops.... night Tom :)
YAY FERNANDO! VAMOS!
yipee!
you are up early
went to sleep early. bodyclock = broken though.
you having a good time?
i am having such a good time i am still here watching a match between two players who peaked in the 80s. They are making it so funny though. And i have taken 500 photos!
omg roger has organised a charity doubles match for haiti tomorrow. I AM SO THERE
Just been for a swim on the roof.
You can see several parts of the track from the pool!
would be awesome to swim about watching a practice session or something.
Also noticed that F1 Comunications still have their big silver building here and lots of air freight pallet things. Presumably storing it all here because the next race is in bahrain?
OOps that was me!
Unless alsion suddenly got all technical!
Time to check out... might try and take a few more snaps before we do. this is an incredible hotel!
my friend kates phone is off and it might be enough to kill me because i am so excited about tomorrow and i know she will feel the same. I might try a headping. KAAAAAAATTTTEEEE!!!
Ooh. Just got the parser error other people have mentioned the last few days.
Time to catch up on comments.
that's excellent! Glad to see he's doing what he can.
hmmm. That makes much sense. I do wonder if they use the same truck in Europe though. I wouldn't think so.
guest post! :D
Kate? Tennis-only friend?
we both like tennis and finland :D
Sounds like a good friend.
KKKKKKKKKKKKKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTEEEEEEEE!!!!
Oh and Good Morning everyone :)
she was asleep but she must have heard your headping because she rung me back and we screamed down the phone at each other and now we're meeting at 8.30 tomorrow morning. That's pretty early for a sunday. But we will do a lot to ensure we get good seats at tennis.
awesome! Who's playing with Fed?
not sure of the matchups yet but going along is Roger, Rafa, Roddick, Djokovic, Clijsters, Serena and Sam Stosur. It's only $10!
Top players ALL plus the best Aussie women's player right now. Impressive! WOW.
I am so thankful right now for Rogers charitable heart for thinking of it, and to all the others for agreeing to play. I hope the place sells out (and that my seats are awesome)
It's a guaranteed sellout, I'm sure - this is esp. for the people who can't afford Oz Open tix. Good luck with the seats! ;)
http://en.espnf1.com/mercedes/motorsport/story/6815.html?CMP=OTC-RSS
Merc will launch 25th Jan, but car won't be seen until testing in Feb.
The car, though - RB1? Hmmm. Isn't that too close to RBR's car names? And... BGP 001, then RB1? Lots of Car 1s for Ross Brawn. :D
http://grandprixdiary.com/2009-grand-prix-drivers/schumacher-causes-alonso’s-first-ferrari-crash
That's just TOO good to be true! :D And... why would Madonna di Campiglio still have a post named after a guy who's already switched teams? :D
the main issue with it might be that it wasn't announced til 4pm today, it doesn't leave much time for 15,000 people to be made aware of it :(
But $10! I'm pretty confident it will be full.
you may overestimate Melbourne. Nothing sells out here. I was shocked how many empty seats were at Kooyong today.
Awww. Boo. :(
here is an example, (if it works)
It does. BOO.
here is a muuuuuch nicer one ;)
:D So he won your tournament, then?
FIX! ;)
he played soooo well. It's just a pity it was an exhibition so doesn't count toward his ranking at all :D
ps, in some photos he really reminds me of di grassi.
Morning all.
Hey Christine. :) How are ya?
Very good. Yourself?
I'm good. :) Should be getting to dinner soon-ish. :D
Excellent. I'm just about thinking of breakfast.
...Just about. Isn't in lunch in an hour? :D
Not in SidepodTowers.
Sidepodtime ;)
Bonjour all
Looks like everyone's coming in. Hey RG.
and James!
Hello sir. Not staying for long though, going in a bit.
heh I've had LCLT open a while, just haven't said anything :)
Ahhh... just like me then. Hehehe. :D
I've been looking at pics of Alonso's Ferrari lid - I like it!
As do I. Have you seen these?
http://estaticos04.marca.com/albumes/2010/01/15/penultimo_dia/1263583766_extras_albumes_1.jpg
http://estaticos04.marca.com/albumes/2010/01/15/penultimo_dia/1263584287_extras_albumes_0.jpg
I have sunburnt knees and it hurts to walk :(
Not these exact pics, but I've seen it from these angles. :)
I wonder if Mild Seven is still getting subliminal ad revenue from Alonso's helmet... :D
Morning all
morning all :) i woke up this morning to a wonderful thing.... most of the snow is gone!! i can see green again! :)
how are you all?
Hehe, the blue colour is also his hometowns don't forget ;)
Amy,
Do you know what Roger is doing on Sunday?
this? I may be too excited to sleep.
Morning. My snow has gone to and has been replaced by this thing called rain, not sure what its like. Don't think we've had it in a while.
Hey Steven
I should have guessed you would already know. I assume you have tickets already then
they go on sale at 9am but I am going to be in the line rather earlier than that.
I know. :D That's why it'll stay there even if Mild Seven hasn't been around for 3-4 years now...
Before or after the sun rises?
ah yes, we have that too :)
Goof luck
Good luck even
and thats saying something because I thought getting up at 10 am for Verdasco (who is gorgeous) was showing dedication.
You mean Roger isn't gorgeouser
no, Roger is lovely and awww but he is by no means a good looking man.
oh and Lou as you can see from the album between the shots of the stadium and the zoomed in shots of the players, new camera passes the test!
Massa 2 Alonso 0.
That could lead to problems.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/massa-beats-alonso-on-the-ice/#comment-9992
Doubt it means that much, unless Finland are awarded a grand prix.
he used his tatic of trying to overtake at the first corner. it didn't work last time he tried it on Massa either.
it's a new day, it must be okay to have another go to autosport...
is there a greater admission of failure, than publicly preferring to upload your exclusive on-stage filming to youtube, as opposed to including them in the advertising backed video player that's built into your website?
#fail
I just think that Alonso won't be happy being beaten twice by his new team mate. I left a comment on Joe's article saying that Massa has a few year's experience of these events so maybe had an advantage but I am sure Alonso wanted to put him in his place.
Haymarket are generating a lot of negative publicity from their show.
from me they are! although pat tweeted:
"Unable to get live show pics due to lighting"
that's an uppercase fail right there.
Joe has another post on Massa/Alonso that has generated a load of comments. Seems like some people never get fed up of arguing 2007.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/massa-and-alonso-walking-the-tightrope/
just wait until schumi hits the track...
sir stirling (with a squashed head):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YYq69RfI_4
You would think anyone operating an exhibition centre would expect photos to be taken and provide suitable lighting. It may be annoying for fans but imagine you are running a company that has spent £100,000 being there with the plan to use photos of your stand in adverts etc. You would be slightly miffed I think.
those with money and experience, light their own stands. prodrive's last year was lit up like a football stadium. much better.
Rhat is a bit unfortunate
You can do that inside the stand but if you want a shot of the full stand it must be problematic.
That
i could tear these people apart all day. how is it we never see henry hope-frost during the whole clip? they have two cameras, i know they do. just cut to him when he asks a bloomin' question.
true enough.
I didn't know Stiriling Moss's father was a racer
You would think with what they spend on the show they could have a mixing desk and put in a two box shot or something when Hope-Frost is speaking
agreed. i rated the video 1 star, only because 0 isn't an option. can't wait to see what comes next.
it's much better as audio only though, it's a perfect radio show in fact.
ted on fuel saving in 2010:
Pit stops will be much quicker this year. Teams will be competing in the pit lane as well as on the track, as mechanics look to break records for the fastest pit stop time.
Three seconds stationary is the target; some teams think they can do it quicker than that.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8461293.stm
When they had tyre only pit stops before they were rarely faster than 4.5 seconds. I don't think they had pit lane speed limirs then so the mechanics were a little further back from the car and didn't move in until it stopped.
I think I commented here a few weeks ago that Williams have their pit crew spending something like 2 hours a day practising stops.
This bit
confusesinterests me:...there are ongoing discussions about whether to make cars start the race on the tyres with which they finished qualifying. This looks like it will happen, and will introduce an interesting variable into the mix, forcing front-running cars to try to qualify on hard tyres or race on soft tyres.
noooo just when I thought we were having low fuel actual fastest driver actually gets pole qualifying!
awesome! :D nikon cameras are lovely :)
i've just come back from a driving lesson..i'd almost forgot what it was like to drive without ice and snow.
I really hope they don't do that.
Looks like another of these syupid rules to create artificial position changes. Instead of letting people run their own choice of tyre strategy you will end up with some people using soft tyres in quali to get high up the grid but compromising their early race pace or sacrificing their position on the grid by using hard tyres but doing a longer first stint and having more consistent pace.
It screws that up as well.
I was worried because after I bought it I looked at reviews and all of them were negative, but all the things that bug the professionals don't bug me (because I can't tell if a shade of blue is two pigments wrong or whatever), and I am very happy with my photos :D
So no sliding today then?
why is starting on soft tyres a problem?
nope, thank goodness.
pat on twitter:
"scott just met franck and mentioned @mrschristine"
ah-ha. ted has all the answers.
as long as you're happy with it, and i serves the purpose it's money well spent :)
It means that they will only be able to do short stints as soft tyres are not going to last long on a car with a full fuel load
YAY
hello. scott got autographs from franck, alex wurz and minassian
awesome!! :) Franck will become a regular before we know it :)
i don't know who minassian is, however i'm pleased to hear Mr Wurz is still around and well :)
Minassian is a slightly insane French driver who also drives for Peugeot
Amy, Rami might take part in the Artic rally. Maybe the twins will be there too :)
Too many Raikkonens. Amy could not cope with so many,
ooooooh TITUS
ehehehehehehe, just catching up on interviews from autosport.
Jenson re- singing We Are the Champions
'It was pretty good actually, if I do say so myself. For some reason the broadcasting quality wasn't very good! But from what I heard it was a pretty good rendition. So I was very happy, I'm going to release an album soon, 'Songs from inside my helmet', and I am looking forward to it.'
:D ehehe <3
also something else i've noticed..
'McLaren is very lucky because they have a simulator that it not like a computer game. A lot of other teams' simulators are like a computer game but this is close to reality as you are going to get it really.' So i suppose that means Brawn's simulator isn't amazing, but kinda confirms they've got one?
and lastly..
Q. How much quicker are you after you shaved?
JB: 'I don't know! I've only just started shaving! Do you like it? I've trimmed up. I arrived here and thought I was going to be wearing team kit so I thought I would have the cap on, so I didn't get a haircut. So it is a little bit bushy, I must say, but I shaved. I feel a lot younger having shaved.'
hehehe, really wish i'd been there. It's Stuart doing the interviewing isn't it? Stuart is awesome!
oops forgot to link
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80926
henry's doing the autosport stage and stuart the f1 racing stand. have you watched the jb videos?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40F28pUNDXk
Rami is going to drive Kimi's Fiat (if he is taking part)
there are videos! :D thanks you! :)
mr c did you see my comment about doohickey last night?
i saw it happening myself at 6am, but was on the itouch and couldn't investigate, then i went back to sleep.
two days ago mediatemple broke doohickey for several hours (although the rest of the site stayed up) with a misconfigured php update. i suspect they achieved something similar last night.
i didn't touch nuffink though :(
oh, wait. is it still happening on the ipod?
tis still happening on my ipod and laptop too..
boo. i assumed it went away again.
soz, i look now. which laptop browser?
chome, tis fine in firefox :)
annoyingly it's fine in mac chrome :(
silly vista :(
tis fine in my windows 7 chrome too
last question then. in lclt, realtime or both?
in chrome - both.
in firefox - neither.
fanx
it's not on the iphone safari.
hello, everyone.
Kimster is sat next to me and he's doing GVSE Biology revision!
I didn't know you were mates! Hello. :)
*GCSE
I've met up with him and Jackie and Maverick and a few others at the Autosport show, we're just all sat having lunch at the moment.
Ahhh. That explains it. :)
Oddly enough, I think that's what they're trying to achieve - they want to AVOID that situation.
3-way title battle between them would be... feisty, to say the list.
I would like to put myself firmly in the group of 'not other people.' When that topic comes up here now I tend to go away until its over.
ooh, not 'some people' rather
*least. Oops. Hehe.
I just can't help lobbing the odd grenade in and watching the reaction.
I don't mind when you do that, I tend to agree with all of your arguments ;)
NASA have cut the asking price for their space shuttles. You would think they could afford to donate them to museums
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20100116/tsc-nasa-slashes-space-shuttle-prices-4b158bc.html
What do you want?
Haven't they suffered budget cuts?
They have three shuttles which even if they went for full price they would raise $126 million. That makes no difference whatever to NASA. That wouldn't pay for a single launch
morning!
I want to magically have absorbed all the text on the 15 tabs I have open so I can go to sleep since I am getting up in 6.5 hours to go get tickets to The Greatest Charity Event Of All Time.
My next comment is waiting for moderation but you and you only can have a preview.
#confidential
Steven Roy
Your comment is awaiting moderation.
Lewis was a rookie up against a double world champion. No rookie has ever come close to that kind of record but somehow you see it as a negative. The Alonso fans seem to have forgotten that for most of the season Hamilton was ahead of Fernando in the championship but the team did not tell Alonso not to challenge him. Had the team decided with 5 or 6 races to go to make Hamilton their number one and force Alonso to stay behind him Hamilton would have been champion in his rookie season. Seems odd that a team that was 100% in favour of one driver did not stop the other driver taking points from him.
Reports are wrong. Anyone who knows anything about the rules of the sport knows that their is no mechanism for a driver’s father to maek a complaint. The idea that the complaint came from Anthony Hamilton is fantasy. The event happened live on TV to a world audience and several commentators on different channels immediately said that they expected the FIA to look into it. This was not something that happened out of site. It happened live in front of a global TV audience of many millions. Anyone who thinks the FIA were not going to take action has not been paying attention since Max got elected.
My personal opinion is that the FIA should have kept out of it as it was nothing to do with them but Max was gunning for McLaren and was going to take any opportunity to penalise them. Alonso showed a lack of clear thought putting himself in a position to be penalised.
Interesting theory but ever so slightly flawed. All of those people are guilty so are covering their own butts when they speak so anyone reading what they say have to say has to bear that in mind. At the stage any of them said that they were trying to minimise their punishment.
The word of an anonymous witness is worthless even if everyone does know who he is. Symonds refused to answer many of the questions put to him so what he did say is therefore diluted. Flavio said he didn’t know anything about anything. So we are left with Piquet’s idiot child. Are we really going to believe that he is the tactical genius behind this whole plot? Didn’t think so.
If the plot wasn’t hatched before qualifying why was Alonso on a fuel load that sane, credible people have said was utterly ridiculous and had no chance of being competitive?
Good morning
Cyril Despres has just arrived to the end of the last special and is the new motorbike Dakar champion (again... :-) )
Forget what is on your screen and get enough sleep so that you can enjoy tomorrow. The internet will still be there tomorrow
that's the official name? ;-)
How many times is that now? He seems to have been leading the Dakar for 20 years.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80930
Do they know something we don't? :)
Any news on the cars? Is there live coverage available?
They can read the future? :D
according to the tennis forum I am a part of it is called "THE BEST CHARITY DOUBLES MATCH WE WILL PROBABLY NEVER SEE" but I will see it so sucks for them they all live elsewhere :D
they start in an hour, i think...
was this your other reason for moving to Melbourne?
third time, but he and Coma are the real front runners since 2005 (the other two Dakars went to him)
I guess so ;)
but of course. Sadly because it goes for two weeks it works out a lot more expensive than a grand prix because I just can't help but buy more tickets.
:D :D :D
Go to bed
Ullevalsetter second, 'Chaleco' López (Chilean) puts the Aprilia 450 in third place at it's first Dakar
only 10 tabs left!
The tabs will still be there in the morning
in Latin America, FoxSports is live at the finish line for the next two hours (hope they stay until the arrival of the cars)
Good result for Aprilia
Excellent because the 450 it's the obligatory formula from next year
yes but tomorrow I will have to open another 40 or so and I'll never reach the end.
Marc Coma is incredible, he always has a smile in his face regardless of the situation and the results... :-)
Even better. I am out of touch with Dakar rules now. That could be a big advantage for them
What's worse. Never reaching the end of your tabs or never reaching the tennis because you can't wake up after 40 minutes sleep.
I will totally wake up because my flatmate will make me :D And because I am awesome I just put this on my phone so I can instantly know if getting up at 7.30 was worth it or not.
(7.30 because my flatmate decided we should walk the 2.4km to Fed Square instead of getting a tram)
They and Yamaha will have the advantage. It will depend of what KTM does, they're not very happy with the change (obvious after they've won the last 9 editions with big bikes...)
Your flatmate is crazy. Get the tram and you will be further up the queue
I always thought the point of Dakar bikes was that they were big. Dropping the engine size seems odd to me.
costs... the driving force of today's sport :-(
fingers crossed, the realtime issue may be solved on iphone safari.
if lou's around and can test on on vista/chrome that'd be appreciated.
am here... seems fine now thank you :D
yay. cheers.
Morning.
Just come back from watching Avatar.
The Argentinian brothers Patronelli have just arrived to a comfortable one-two in the quads :-)
so it does. :)
...and? :D
did you like it?

Big Picture - Dakar 2010 edition.
Wow! Some of those pictures are fantastic!
The movie is very good. Story is weak, but special effects were brilliant and imaginative.
The 3D part I was not so impressed with. It was nice, but it did not add to the movie in my opinion. You sorta see objects in front of others, but because the focus does not change you cannot really look at them. In fact, in some cases you get a bit disoriented by it. But it was very entertaining and not a "long" 3 hours like Lord of The Rings was...
...Having said that, everything about going to the movies annoys me. I'd much rather curl up on the couch and watch a DVD!
The Dakar always provides stunning images, it's amazing :D
(BTW, I was sitting 30 meters down the road from picture 7... ;-) )
That.is.AMAZING.
Did you stay in the river too? :)
my thoughts. brilliant movie visually (I would say almost perfect), common story.
but there are movies that are meant to be seen at the cinema, unless you have a projector and 25 powerful speakers ...
no, we were there really early in the morning so we didn't need to ;-)
Which is why I put up with the boneheads that work there and the annoying people in the movie theatre...
#dakar
Sainz losing 6 seconds to Al-Attiyah at the 66km mark, still 2'44 in front. This will be really really close... :D
It astounds me what some people consider to be acceptable behaviour in a cinema. But I'm in a good mood at the moment so won't get started on that.
Good on VW for letting them race! This will be oh-so-tight. I want Sainz to win!
Although you'd have to remember Sainz started 4 MINUTES behind Al-Attiyah, and is now practically right with him.
You and millions of Argentinians. There is strong relationship with him from his days in the WRC. And he deserves it...
Too much heartbreak for Sainz in the last few years of Dakar for him to miss out again...
I want Sainz to win too!
2008 was really heartbreaking :-(
You meant 2009, surely?
That will be nothing compared to this year if he misses out again.
it will be a 200km WRC special, specially because of the people involved...
yes! :-)
noooooo! damn FoxSports. They're ending the live coverage now :-(
Well, it's back to the live tracking...
Ahhh. Right. I may have misinterpreted the start times. :D
Sainz just 18s slower than Al-Attiyah at 60% distance. Come on!!!
fortunately for him Chicherit is going fast in front of him, so he probably won't catch him before the end
Yo yo. Home :)
I'm having a bit of sensory overload!
Even if he does, I'm pretty sure they've already been asked to stay out of the way of the VWs if need be.
How was it? Best weekend of your life? :D
too many new things?
Twas amazing, their aren't enough swimming pools with views of f1 tracks!
Or cocktail bars on bridges over tracks for that matter.
Company wasnt too bad either :)
Does anyone know a good free Programme that can copy a playlist from an iPod to a PC?
There has to be one or two in Singapore - and let's not forget Monaco... :D
HA! :P
You and Alison both here?
test comment
Can anyone recommend how to copy a playlist from an iPod to a PC?
weird... sorry about the double comment :(
No idea, sorry.
25 km to go and Sainz still leading by more than 2 minutes. It's looking good!
Yeah Nick stole the internet cable to order pizza.
So this must be Alison, then... :D
Yah he's too distracted putting the pizza people on hold by accident....
Heheh!
they arrived, waiting for confirmation of the final times, but Carlos Sainz is the Dakar 2010 winner!! :D
YEAAAAH! Well done Carlos! :D
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/imag0345
The bain of Alisons life...
They deserved it!
woah
afternoon everyone
:D Oooh, mood lighting!
GRRR
GP2 have got twitter....
They are @feeder_series.
boo
#dakar
Sainz 2'12 in front of Al-Attiyah, and almost 33' in front of Miller. 1-2-3 for the VW Touareg
I should add: WOOOOOOHHHHOOOOO! :D
Why didn't they get @GP2_series?
no idea!
Crowd MUST be going bonkers right now!
and they even started tweeting before i did! so i have no idea why they went for the underscore
the lack of an off switch didn't put her in a good mood!
am not sure that's what it means by mood lighting!
waiting for some TV feed of the place, but surely. And tomorrow in Buenos Aires will be amazing...
:D Hehehe. I'm sure you had fun in spite of the oddball remote switch.
Robby Gordon also looks on course to finish 7th in the final standings, an excellent result for the American and NASCAR driver.
Yeah we had awesome fun. It was very beautiful.
I'm glad I had packed an evening dress or I might have felt very out of place!
Understatement of the year? Hehehe. :)
Referring to the nightclub?
Generally!! Very much a dress for dinner kind of place :P Nick is very keen to tell you the restaurant was opposite the paddock!
Everywhere? Wow - that IS swanky.
The lobby is pretty much the same as the ship in hitchhikers guide the galaxy.
Very White, with a bit of silver here and there!
Lifts also awesome, they leave the doors open when they wait on a floor!
What he means is they were very shiny and someone likes to pose.....
Vain much? Hehehe. :D
Hurry up pizza!!!
How many minutes has it been already, anyway?
Too Long!
Indeed so. Good luck with that.
Anyway, must get to bed. Good night, folks. :)
ooh! night J
Night.
Don't stop believing ;)
liking this post from manipe: http://www.manipef1.com/blog/articles/6/
So who's at this Karting malarke?
i think... everyone :)
looks like it!
think i've asked this, but is the NEC wireless enabled?
I'm wandering around. Doing something.
I'm planning something quite epic
across the whole site.
Yay for epic-ness
oh wow. cool
no, no, no.
i can't one multi-task. i meant to say...
across the whole site, no.
ah. thought so
ta
i'm doing creative things at home, and trying not to worry about not getting a uni offer... even though that's ages away.. :D what's everyone else up to?
I'm having a quiet drunk night in or as we like to call it #drunkentwitternight with the girls... :D
show notes for this weeks (offline) show.
about to go cook steak :D
Twitter + drink = bad.
I've just seen Twister for the fourth or tenth time. Great movie :-)
Out to work in the garden now
Oh I know.... I'm quite the expert at it by now ;)
It's impossible when you keep commenting.
SHOOOOO!
Football Manager.
Need to do something else. Ooooh, food.
Heh!
Just remember not to typo the word 'amazing'. :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/1-1241276800371
What is this? and the comment probably needs deleting
Care to explain?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lukeh-tweets-png
I have nothing to say on the matter. :)
Hhahaha some classic drunken tweeting there Mr Lukeh! Excellent :D :D
pass, i check.
I'm quite glad we're doing an offline show this week. I am struggling to convince Mr C into talking about the rankings without swearing.
****
aw i'm sad you're doing an offline show, i don't feel like i've had a proper sunday in weeks ;)
I've never experienced a live show properly yet either :(
Better than no show though.
Evem with just 1 camera (grr) I heart Jenson's Q&A with the fans at ASI.
Just don't put bleeps in again if he has to swear. (looking at you Scott) so I don't end up waking up at 3am.
this is true :)
Should be using F1 sounds instead of bleeps anyway ;)
hehe. that we have.
About to kart. No sign of
Andy :(
oh no. is everyone else there?
alia & brother, jackie, scott, scott's dad, kimster, chris, plus random extras. Alia thought you may be coming to record
ah no, very busy sadly. i thought startledbunny was recording?
bunny is on his way home. Catch ya later
I. Hate. Hangovers.
That is all.
Oh dear.... I'm well on my way to getting ****** tonight! More drink will maybe help? ;)
Sooo, good morning then?
^^corrected!
Ooops, sorry! You know I've been worrying about swearing on here... I do have a potty mouth :( I'll try harder....
I covered my eyes at the right moment ;)
but think of the children!
;)
Hahaha, I will I promise, I'll be good *angel face* :)
You can talk! What happens if I say... rankings!!
&*%$*£% %@@*
totally.
Same here!!!
ah .. see i don't mind people telling me Jenson is no.1 :P however apart from p1.. i think they are crazy! :)
I was actually quite pleasantly surprised at where they ranked Jarno :D
just wait until they tell you kimi is ranked higher because he took part in more ice rallies.
Above Alonso?
Pfft!
I bet Alonso was too!
Surprised, that is. Probably not pleasantly!
Why of course.... I'm a die-hard Jarno fan :D
I've always appreciated it when people come 4th in competions. To me, finishing 4th is definitely a winners finish.
I was shocked when Timo wasn't in the top 10.
Though that might be down to bias
i just like seeing Jenson with a '1' next to his name... usually it's something like '16' :)
:D
In fairness though, it's a bit rich saying that a guy who won one race is better than a double world champion... especially when car performance was part of it!
I know, I know, however much I love Jarno, even I can't say honestly that he's better than Alonso but the whole thing still made me smile A LOT :)
Good for you ;)
Spare a thought for those of us who have favourite drivers in 243rd :(
Jarno is better than Alonso though
We are talking about the Train Rankings right?
I thought it might be wine.
Bourdais was the second best Frenchman last year though...
Ooooh..... you big meanie! You make me cry now :(
Awww :(
i am awake! I cant walk! Stupid sunbum
this is how obserd the ranking is....the top 3 drivers in the BTCC are higher than him!! how does that work!!
Dude, Nakajima, Sutil and Woman are in the top 50, higher than Kristensen and McNish!!!
http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/01/14/castrol-driver-rankings/
There has to be a more logical system, well, I don't think it would be too hard.
ugh
I don't get how Nakajima, who scored nul point, finished ahead of Sutil, who got something like 6?
what we need is a really bad pay driver to come into f1 in 2010 and finish consistently last every race.
they'll end up in the top 10 easy :)
I'm just saying, British Rail could learn from Jarno's wonderfully crafted trains!
Beats me too. Nakajima was awful in 2009 and yet he is in the top 50?
DC it rewards consistency and finishing. and that it's a good thing.
yes. for someone as slow as him maybe.
Something you should know.... never EVER mention the 'Trulli Train' in front of me.... *has a tantrum*
Good morning. Dare I ask where you have your sunburn?
But not points, wins or podiums if you are not in F1 it seems...
What about the Trulliometer?
Damn that Lukeh and his rudeness. *shakes fist*
Mmmh.. what is that?
Hahahaha
cough on the wiki cough
Oh no... do I dare look? :(
Hmm, I'm having a lot of odd problems all of a sudden. When I try to load pages on the site it's asking me if I want to save the page instead of loading it up (??) and I'm getting could not be submitted messages when on doohickey despite comments posting.
Probably just my net again but thought I'd flag up just in case
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Trulliometer
It's not mean, we just have to keep an eye on Jarno's mood swings :)
odd. which browser?
Firefox. 3.6 beta mind you. Has been working fine though since installing for the past week or so, just all of a sudden.
Hmm, seems alright again now. That was very odd.
Maybe it was Barrowman?
Ah okay, awww bless ickle Jarno! Me still loves him though :)
Muwuhahahahah!
*shakes fist*
Noted. Saira, PUB! :D
(hearts) this title:
http://www.motorsportmusings.co.uk/2010/01/sainz-sealed-delivered/
Oh sure... :D
Wonder if there is a job for The Sun available?
Ouch! poor Dank!!
It was a compliment. A very good pun
Definitely a compliment. The Sun have the best puns in the world. Shame they can't follow it up with decent reporting, but I guess you can't have everything.
Thank you. I put it past the other-half first and she rolled her eyes at me! I've since told her to concentrate on taking pictures instead. Ha!
Rolled eyes and groans are the sign of a good pun - just ask Alex!
I seem to have arrived at just the right time!
oh my god epic line is epic. Should have camped overnight
Evening all
i've seen the autosport interview with Jenson a few times and i get the impression Jenson would have been very happy to have conducted the fan Q&A on his own, he seems to be quiet good at presenting... not that he'd eve become a presenter, just an observation.
Hmmm. Can Jenson retire now and replace Eddie Jordan?
Evnin Steven
He could replace Ant and give him a drive
while that would be awesome... he isn't allowed to retire yet :P
Yeah... he's had his turn after all ;)
But who would want Ant in there team?
oooh.. Jenson is good at commentary.. and listening to him talk lots over a weekend would be cool.... but i (heart) ant's commentary too..
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/16/is-2010-the-year-the-f1-testing-died/
Good evening
oii!!
He was a good presenter wasn't he? Very friendly and funny :)
Quite clearly no-one or he would have a drive
True that, he is a good test driver
Hi Maverick
Also he seemed geniunely thankful for what Rubens did with him over 2009 which is always excellent in my books :P
Anything happening?
I guess not :-)
am just uploading a clip from Dr Who confidential :)
I'm still to watch the end of time you know
peoples are karting. how's you?
Apart from those karters, nothing at all.
i's good, didn't feel in the mood for karting though
Hypothermia doesn't appeal then?
probably would have fallen asleep at the wheel to be fair
Film Watch ping: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/01/16/film-watch-28-the-incredibles/
If the Dr Who fans are interested, have uploaded Tennant's goodbye.

Are you trying to make me cry????
No!
oh.. i haven't seen it yet.. will it make me cry too?
Yes.
okay, i'm going to chance it..
Didn't make me cry this time round, although I've watched it quite a lot :)
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i don't want him to go! that's so sweet! am gonna need to cheer myself up with some happy jenson videos now..
That is very cool!
From Scott Woodwiss on Facebook:
"Shout out to everyone I met at the Autosport show and at karting today. Had an absolutely fantastic time, was brilliant meeting you all and defo have to do it again. 3 hour journey home now! :D"
Hey guys! What an awesome day! Made the final of the karting too! :D
Hey Scott - didn't think you would get on here for a while so I re-facebooked your comment ;)
No mention of how did in karting? He blew the others away on the simulator.
Ah... see!
That doesn't surprise me!
phone battery is in the red so if I disappear then that's why! :P
which one?
Any crashes?
mobll 1 simulator. got fastest lap of the day at the time! :D
ooh, not sure i saw that one.
I tried the Williams one. did you see the Bamboo Engineering one? that was amazing
One or two little mishaps, nothing major.
Was that the one on the 3 hydraulic arms? yeah that was great!
yeah. very cool
#jonfact for you...
I hate autosport, because the day's after I get withdrawal symptoms and want to a) get back into a kart (although hoorah, endurance kart race this week!) and b) want to do a season of something.
I love talking about it, and interviewing people over the last 2 days was alot of fun, but then i get back to my prison-cell-esq-room and read through the leaflets and brochures i was given and think "ho hum"
each year i've been to goodwood i've had withdrawal symptoms too.
I gotta try and sleep. Last few days is going to catch up with me!
Adios
That he did.
Me: 1m44s (two spins)
Chris: 1m42s (1.5 spins?)
Scott: 1m09s
yeah..
Just got out my certificate. It was 1:43.290.
So who's at this Karting malarke? {Comment #372}
22 people. Five people from Sidepodcast, four people from GPWizard, Patrick from Motorsports Ramblings, Antony from Twitter, my brother and I and eight people who signed on with the circuit directly.
It would have been 23 had I been able to get home afterwards.
Dude, Nakajima, Sutil and Woman are in the top 50, higher than Kristensen and McNish!!! {Comment #446}
Who's Dude, and did his nickname come from an amusing newspaper headline?
I had no idea it was that Patrick! I read his stuff sometimes. Long but interesting. I spoke to him for a good while as well.
It would have been 23 had I been able to get home afterwards. {Comment #538}
True. Hopefully next time the event can be earlier in the evening. For that matter, the 68-karter event before us seemed to have a fair few karters disguised as empty spaces (though given how my estimates last year panned out for my own event, perhaps I shouldn't complain too loudly!)
I had no idea it was that Patrick! I read his stuff sometimes. Long but interesting. I spoke to him for a good while as well. {Comment #540}
I like Patrick's writing a lot as well, partly because of that discursive style.
Any crashes? {Comment #526}
There were a few. The most notable of these were the one in Heat 11 when nearly the entire field ended up in an orderly pile-up at the corner after the pit entrance. The exception was me... ...because my kart had just broken down in the pit lane. Needless to say, there was a red flag.
I also got rear-ended by another karter while attempting to get going after a discussion with a marshal about what he was trying to tell me. This resulted in my kart spearing left and getting stuck in the wall. That's why my chest aches today.
