It's the second day of Autosport International - another trade day - and if the headlines are anything like yesterday, we'll be tearing our hair out by the end of proceedings! Nevertheless, despite our reservations about the concept of trade shows at all, it continues, and we will keep our eye on what's happening. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • Yesterday was Thursday, and that means Thursday Thoughts. Although it is now Friday, I wanted to give the blogging project a quick shout out as we have run out of lead bloggers to set the questions now. It's a great thing to take part in, you just have to set a nice, easy question and see what answers come flowing in. Let us know if you'd like to take part!
  • Schumacher has finally had the weather behind him and the GP2 bosses say he is right on pace for the final day of testing at Jerez. Schumacher himself says he's feeling really ready to bring on the F1 challenge, after being completely comfortable testing this week.
  • Finally, I suppose it has to be mentioned, the Castrol Rankings nonsense. I wrote about it briefly on Franck's behalf, whilst Gavin took a much closer look. Coming from someone who analyses numbers so well, the post is well worth a read. Yesterday I said let's never mention it again. I think I'll go back to that now the plugging is done!

That's all for now, it's Friday, so it must be time to start gearing up for the weekend. Let us know what you're up to, particularly if you're heading up to Autosport International, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

boo at sucky draw. Henin and Clijsters in the same quarter so no chance of a dream final :( and Rogers quarter is full of awesome players. :(

  • neo15/01/2010 at 02:20

I gonna be to the Expo building site in Shanghai, heard it's great spectacular, but less than an F1 circuit, maybe not.

I think it's nothing to do with the gp grandstands even F1, the rather that it's in China

Hmmm. Most interesting, this. From Twitter:

Team Lotus #F1 owner and Air Asia founder, Tony Fernandes, is expected to be the new owner West Ham United Football Club in 24 hours time.

At least he managed to buy a Premier League club, which is more than can be said for Bernie...

he seems to be a keen supporter.

  • Journeyer15/01/2010 at 05:19

he seems to be a keen supporter.

What I do find interesting is the amount of interest there is in a football club - so much so that even F1 team owners can't resist taking a look, at least. On the other hand, we don't see FC owners taking a look at F1 very often at all... Does it say something about F1's profitability versus that of a football club?

  • Journeyer15/01/2010 at 05:21

What days will you be watching the Aussie Open live? :D

  • me15/01/2010 at 05:23

it does, football has way more grass roots support and offers better potential in developing countries than motorsport. bernie will be long gone before racing is popular in korea.

"Better potential" might be understating it, when one realizes the sheer number of football players (and more than the occasional legend) from developing continents such as South America and Africs.

Webber's not even the star in his own team. What's his chance against this lot?

I guess since Flav can't be his manager anymore, he's decided to take over managing himself, hiring help where needed.

Sweet Jeebus have you seen the new header on James Allen's website?

  • Steven Roy15/01/2010 at 09:42

    #sidepodspace

space.com is a site I keep finding and keep forgeting. They have a couple of articles on space topics that get discussed here. The first one is on space rocks and contains the following 'interesting' quotes.

Scientists estimate there are about 100,000 asteroids and comets near Earth, but only about 20,000 are expected to pose any risk of impact.

As of Monday, NASA has found 6,330 of those objects, 1,000 of them flying in orbits that could potentially threaten the Earth in the future, Johnson said.

In the subject of the huge rock that hit Jupiter that was discussed on sidepodradio.

"It caught us a little bit by surprise," Johnson said of the Jupiter impact, which scientists believe was caused by an asteroid or comet.

    http://www.space.com/news/090812-nasa-asteroid-funding.html

They also have a list of every space launch for this year.

    http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/launches/launch_schedule.html

  • Christine15/01/2010 at 09:43

"It caught us a little bit by surprise," Johnson said of the Jupiter impact, which scientists believe was caused by an asteroid or comet.

Well they can't watch the whole of the atmosphere around the Earth and Jupiter, can they?

  • Steven Roy15/01/2010 at 09:44

SOmebody told me that was on top of his other income too!

Massa: "I've spoken more to Fernando now than in three years with Kimi."

I would suspect that he's already argued with Fernando more than in three years with Kimi. Even if Felipe later said they extremely worked well nonetheless, he already said what he said. So what's with all the Kimi-hate? :(

    We missed you!

That problem you had with Alianora's call is new. I never had that before I upgraded to karmic and the new Skype beta. It only occurs if you mix skype and normal phones in a conference call. Another side effect is that you can't hear anything anymore (which is happening this moment :) )

Don't know why it was peeping like that.

No more Skyping without Kathi's expertise.

  • Kathi15/01/2010 at 15:16

    that's exactly what happened.

For the Alex' party I set up the conference on my desktop (linux) and added myself under another username on my netbook (windows) so I could understand what everyone was saying because the sound quality on the desktop was so bad (only for me though not for the others). And I couldn't set up the conference on the netbook because then the quality of the whole call was very very bad. I don't know if that was because of windows or because the netbook is just a netbook.

    :D :D

  • Steven Roy15/01/2010 at 15:35

    the guy from autosport?

That's the one. I only ever started one of his columns before and gave up after three paragraphs. I love journalists test driving racing cars and he was testing an Aston Martin. After about four references to James Bond I decided it was pointless reading anything he wrote. In today's AUTOSPORT he had an article test driving a car from a new class based on the old A1GP cars so I thought I would try it. He had three columns on a page and 4 lines from the bottom of the second column he hadn't even sat in the car. He no sooner sat in it than he was back out telling us more about the background to the championship.

I have read the whole thing and know little or nothing about the car. The championship is run by former F1 team owner Enzo Coloni who had said that he wanted to design a Mansell car with lots of power that could be driven on the throttle. Clearly young Mr Anderson doesn't know what driven on the throttle means because he thinks it happens in a straight line. I would love to know why Haymarket pay him.

  • Steven Roy15/01/2010 at 15:36

Does he work for US F1?

    I didn't make that connection. D'Oh!

He seems utterly incompetent so there is a chance he will soon.

  • me15/01/2010 at 15:43

Clearly young Mr Anderson doesn't know what driven on the throttle means because he thinks it happens in a straight line. I would love to know why Haymarket pay him.

ahh, yes. maybe he's the intern?

http://www.aut...s/article.php/id/2593 (it is in the Features section but apparently free)

Moreno was a massively underrated driver. He had real ability but only ever got one break in his life and that was screwed by Schumacher's move to Benetton. Bertrand Gachot has a lot to answer for.

I didn't know Piquet had financed him. That shows another side of his character.

    Can I just say, Ferrari's show car is OLD. That looks like an F2003-GA! {Comment #199}

They had a 2002-spec car when I went last year, so at least they're progressing at the same rate as chronological time. It just means we'll see the car that raced last year in 2016...

  • Tom G15/01/2010 at 17:23

I hate my computer. It's old and dying, as demosntrated by that annoying crash.

it was just stuff like "how many page views does your site get?"

given that they also happen to own a popular f1 website, that's a lot of information for one company to be collecting about their competitors.

  • Steven Roy15/01/2010 at 18:44

I don't think I said that exactly now, did I?

Clearly you haven't quite got a grasp of sidepodcast yet. In sidepodcast terms you said exactly that

    in what way?

  • Jon Waldock15/01/2010 at 18:46

    in what way?

    same fans. different purpose.

A/S is purely a news site, whereas this is more interactive. They could never achieve something like Sidepodcast, it just wouldnt work.

A/S is purely a news site, whereas this is more interactive. They could never achieve something like Sidepodcast, it just wouldnt work.

i wasn't specifically thinking of us. presumably the espnf1 and gpupdate etc all wish to go and all wish to speak to drivers. a lot of info is being collected.

should haymarket be in a position to insist on such information, given they also compete for the same page views?

  • me15/01/2010 at 18:51

plus they tried to do a podcast before and i got bored

hehe. autosport aren't competition for us. we don't make any money, we don't have anything to lose, we just do it because it's fun. if they made an uber popular podcast it wouldn't make any difference because we're not doing it to be popular, or successful.

  • Jon Waldock15/01/2010 at 18:54

i wasn't specifically thinking of us.

    ooops #blamesteven

a lot of info is being collected.

thats very true, you have a good point, but if you want that kind of access then i guess you have to give it, although actually apart from the karting access and media centre (im presuming wifi or something?), and lower cost? (no idea) then you dont necessarily need it. the only bit i would have liked is maybe wireless so i could update during the day and access to the karting bit. apart from that and a proper pass i dont think there's much difference. (But am likely wrong)

  • me15/01/2010 at 19:02

although actually apart from the karting access and media centre (im presuming wifi or something?), and lower cost? (no idea) then you dont necessarily need it.

media pass gets you free entry, whereas a trade access would require £26(ish) a day.

still don't think it's right let they're in this position, but am assuming trade shows to be on their last legs anyhow :)

  • Jon Waldock15/01/2010 at 19:03

media pass gets you free entry, whereas a trade access would require £26(ish) a day.

    yeah something like that.

    agreed

but am assuming trade shows to be on their last legs anyhow :)

    shhhhh

actually i have a cool idea of something next year, but as it's likely to go horribly wrong, i wont tell you until then ;)

I have just done something really hideous to word, excel, outlook and adobe acrobat. I have just made a spam bot out of them all. But to send something that people actually want. I guess a ham bot.

Most mad bit. Running an application called Express Click Yes. What it does is wait for the warning message from outlook which says, "are you sure you want some horrible word add in to do this thing to me" and it clicks the yes button for you.

I've had a discussion about this with an ex-Force India staffer who's still in contact with some of the staff. Apparently nobody is worried and from what I gather, the reason for the non-arrival for the first test is to squeeze in more wind tunnel testing.

Ah good, it's true you don't always need alcohol but it makes things better sometimes...

I prefer being sober, quite honestly. From my experiences, it was more fun for friends watching me than I actually found it. I'm far too sensible to lose my head.

that is the downside, hearing what you did the day after.

I know exactly what I did, I remember it, I was only sort of drunk. Still didn't all enjoy it that much. I'd rather be funny on purpose, not because I genuinely became confused.

i can be sober, but with sobriety comes silence.

yeah maybe. what time is your live arena show? mine is 930, which was silly in hindsight.

11am. I'm meeting Jackie and Maverick and others from VivaF1 at the F1 Racing stand as soon as it ends, which I guess is 12

  • Jon Waldock16/01/2010 at 00:07

Pat, Scott says can you email him your number so you can arrange to all meet up tomorrow. Do you have his address?

You'll know it's us because Pitmonster has arranged for us to wear VivaF1-branded name badges, and we'll probably be the nerdy group trying to access the comments here instead of talking to each other :-)

and Bamboo Engineering - coolest simulator ever, it's a real life one.
