Another double birthday today, as Giancarlo Fisichella celebrates alongside Narain Karthikeyan. Fisichella is also looking for a race seat in 2010, alongside his testing duties for Ferrari. Busy man! Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Bernie has been talking again, with a couple of suggestions, including a bit of a tweak to the new points system, again. He doesn't think the change has made any difference at all, and wants still more of a gap. He's also proposed the idea of shortcuts on a racetrack to stir things up a bit. Odd.
  • There's even more testing news, as Schumacher's GP2 fun was hampered by the weather yet again, Ferrari are going to give Valentino Rossi another test, and Virgin are preparing for the second test, skipping the first just like Red Bull.
  • Meanwhile, I've been handing out homework assignments again, with a blog post request for the sentences on circuits. Essentially, your thoughts about each circuit on the calendar in some quick soundbites. You know you want to.

That'll do for now. It's the first day of Autosport International, when trade and media types head up to the NEC, so keep your eyes peeled for news and pictures, and I'll see you in the comments.

in the media bit, i believe so. and in the restaurant section for joe public. think it's paid wifi though.

  • Pat W14/01/2010 at 01:19

    oh!

I wanted to have the main blog with the little widget on the side just as now, and then add a separate page for the big calendar like I have in that blog post for people who don't use Google Calendar. But before that I was just trying to replicate that blog post in WP.

Blogger won't let you do the separate page and WP won't let you embed.. this is suddenly a lot harder than expected...

previously i would take them to a shop that would tighten the screws and they would fit for a month or so. But after specsavers did such a lovely job bending my new glasses i took my sunglasses there and had them bent too. Only problem is now they dont fit in their case properly. Stupid small head! :D

Are race tix even on sale yet?

  • Joe in Fla14/01/2010 at 04:25

    expensive?

they go up to around $320 during the GP weekend, that's not the real issue. The issue is that the hotel right on Crescent St. (where all the street parties are) has only 1 double room left and it's on a smoking floor.

  • Joe in Fla14/01/2010 at 04:27

Ah, the F1 ticket gift. That's how I got to my first GPC, sat across from Kimi's garage. I think you'll see some movement after Jan 15

  • Faceman3214/01/2010 at 04:34

Hopefully it comes to fruition. I've been wanting to go to a race for a long time, but just haven't been able to make it happen yet.

How's your weather out there? Heard its colder than usual?

Yes, had a cold snap for the ages. On Sunday morning prior to work forced myself get up and go running. It was about 30F. I also hate being on my lanai shivering while drinking beer

  • Faceman3214/01/2010 at 04:43

I know I should be careful what I wish for, but it's unusually warm here (Winnipeg). Wish it would snow, its my first winter owning a snowmobile and I can't use it.

So far just testing it out on our property until it runs a little more reliably, then we'll possibly insure it and take out on the trail system out here.

    Wacky Races much? :D

Although Bernie's statement on just needing 10 teams kinda tells me either he wasn't in favor of Max asking for 3 new teams last year or (more probably) he knew some teams were dropping out and they might need replacements...

  • Alex Andronov14/01/2010 at 07:44

Poor you. is it because the house is drafty because of the broken window?

I don't think so. We've both been suffering from the same thing for most of December... And now much of January. Quite bored of it now.

I like this idea. I was thinking that February 29 would be six months exactly after I started planning my Spa trip and six months before I would be in Spa. But there is no February 29. No half way mark exists :(

How's it going? Is it Icy where you are (because here it thawed and then froze over again last night)?

Bourdais was in it last year.

It's a lot of kids and feeder series types, but there was some action in it, even if I am cynical of the concept of footy teams in Motorsport.

I think an F1 test might be a nice carrot to some to join the series though, especially now that A1GP has tanked...

I'd rather have this one of course but it is slightly too expensive.

when clamshell phones were all the rage and I hated them I got laughed at by one of my friends for not having one. Now you get laughed at if you do. I wonder what the next step in touch screen phones, which I also hate, is.

I had a clamshell phone until last month and I loved it!

DC has definitely sold Castol Thingy to me

You tend to think F1 is the pinnacle, but is it rallying? Is it sportscars? Is it some guy racing in Australian Formula 3? - I didn't know until last night that there is an Australian F3 championship!

Neither did I and I lived down under!

Fabien is talking about Porsches in Aussie at the mo

It seems a weird thing to do, because to me, rankings always means something. Like in tennis, the rankings actually determine things like where you are placed in a draw, or whether you're invited to the end of year thingy. In tennis, people actually care about rankings, but I can't see why anyone would for motorsport, drivers or otherwise.

stuff that. the whole thing is clearly a marketing excercise designed to let autosport claim they pick the best driver in the world.

it's stupid idea, designed to cause controversy and to put autosport in the headlines.

I guess that means the logical next step for them is to make a deal with the RoC - they'll sponsor the event, in exchange for them inviting the top X drivers in the rankings. That way, this set of rankings has significance. Same goes for nation rankings and such.

If Loeb beat an F1 driver it wouldn't count for toffee in my book - he is by far the best driver in a poor field and therefore it is relatively not as good as being champion of a close series with at least 6 top drivers in it!

By the way, if the idea for the RANKINGS was to generate chatter for that WEBSITE, well, s'worked hasn't it?

I hope not - if they do it properly then it will look funny and nobody will like it. If Castrol drivers or another company top it, it will look biased. Finally if they have it so F1 dominates then everyone will complain it's unfair (think Hindy and how he thinks sportscars are better here for an example).

    They cannot win!

  • Alex Andronov14/01/2010 at 11:48

depends if you claimed it was an "objective and expansive measurement of driving talent".

And if say, like you did Gav, you asked people's opinions about the weightings and then blogged about the results and engaged with peoples thoughts on the matter.

That's what I plan to do in the end - I might use some different systems and compare. Interestingly, with all of your systems, the top and bottom were identical, but the midfield was really shuffled!

I just don't get it. I did this stuff for fun and only for F1 in 2009 and I have been widely criticised for not comparing drivers fairly, not allowing for car performance and comparing categories that are irrelevant.

How can AUTOSPORT do this for 47 championships and then say that it is definitive? And how can they do this on a rolling 12 month period, when drivers are trained to peak at different times of the year?

This is going to be fun to see how bad it is!

their industry is dying / dead, they're slipping into irrelevance (and probably the red), i argued earlier that their trade show is obsolete and their awards show serves only as a convenient end of year party.

I thought this was an odd comment from Alonso

"Since Michael retired there was a lack of motivation on my part," said Alonso, who beat Schumacher to the 2005 and 2006 titles before the German retired.

Alonso was demotivated without Scumacher around? So it wasn't because of McLaren management, scandals with your boss and an underperforming team that may have demotivated him then? Riiiiiight.

    4) which is more awesome - Timo or Spurs?

I've got this great system, right..

Ooh - are you going to put Timo in the Football team, Peter Crouch in the SuperLeague team, sum up the results, divide by the number of games, multiply by the number of blog posts RG writes about them and then subtract the amount of people who actually think that it's definitive? :D

probably because they extrapolated his starts to make them up to 20. i can't remember how many he really had, something 4 or 5 was it? so a duff result has a big effect

I preferred snow, at least I wasn't so wet then.

Rain is awesome. It creates mud, therefore brilliant for keepers.

Schumacher on the pace with GP2 car

That's good news. :D But even if he's quick enough, will the car follow suit?

  • Tom G14/01/2010 at 16:27

    Not just for Christmas?

Clearly not. That was just the AS module title. But it now seems we're doing all the spiritual elements, we did fire in Developing Fuels, now it looks like Air in Atmospheric Chemistry and water in Elements from the Sea!

Sorry this is long or if somebody already commented on it:

iRacing is going to model the '09 Williams' FW31 car into its sim for release later this year. For those of you who don't know iRacing, it's the probably the hardest of hard-core racing simulations, with laser-scanned tracks and (in my opinion) the best so far in driving physics. iRacing is unique (and expensive) in that every car and track is effectively licensed and you have to buy each car and track, but each car is also modeled with whoever made the car. F1 cars in hardcore sims aren't new, but realism has always been suspect, at least to me. iRacing will actually be camping out at Williams to develop this.

Anyways, hugely excited for this and I'll try to review it for Sidepodcast when it comes out.  Silverstone is the only current F1 circuit modeled so it'll be interesting to see the list of tracks iRacing has in mind for the future, although I'm looking forward to Laguna Seca under 60 seconds...

hah, on mobile so I couldn't scroll through fast enough. Here's to seeing the virtual incarnation of Dale Jr. in the FW31 car on an oval in Florida. Correction too: along with Silverstone, Indy infield GP (sob) layout I think is also modeled.

I think we should go for the chase movie style. Now that there's no pitstops for fuel. How about the pit crew have to walk back and forth across the track carrying plate glass windows and crates of chickens. You get points if your pit crew manages to place something in the path of a rival?

I know I'm going to have to fix that...

So the best I can do is to tell you the story about this picture that has been on the drop since Tuesday...

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-394

Fourstar and I went to an awards dinner which we ineligible to win any awards at. This was fine... but then we saw everyone having their pictures taken in front of the sponsor board holding up their prizes and everything. It looked pretty good. We wanted a go, we asked several of the fuddy duddy winners of the awards to lend us their awards to no avail. So finally we borrowed a guy, Noel, seen in between us in the picture who worked for a winning bank. We told him that he could be our award. The official photographer then took the photo with my iphone. And there you have it!

If that wasn't enough. Later Fourstar and I were some of the only people out of the hundreds there to join in the conga line started by Kid Creole and the coconuts started a conga to Annie I'm not your daddy. The security didn't look particularly pleased when the line went through the bar area... Only about 6 of us joined in... And all the fuddy duddies looked on in horror. So maybe we've still got it... just.

  • Bassano14/01/2010 at 18:22

... And all the fuddy duddies looked on in horror. So maybe we've still got it... just.

i have gone from loving autosport last week, to be totally dejected about the future of the company.

was hoping the intended to announce an iphone/islate app or something that said "we have a plan to survive". this says they're looking at their shoes and pretending they don't face massive challenges this year.

I think it's a novel idea, but I need to see it in progress first.

What else do you feel's dragging them down sir? Admittedly I've not read it much over the last few months as most of my work travel's been car and not train based - but has it really got that bad?

There's an easter egg of Spiderman in one of the scenes - where they blow up the riot van - he lands and jumps off the screen.

Drove me crazy between the cinema and dvd release as I thought I'd gone crazy.

  • me14/01/2010 at 19:03

I think it's a novel idea, but I need to see it in progress first.

it's designed to create headlines for autosport, to be copied and pasted by overworked website editors.

it isn't based in any form of fact. it's purely an exercise in marketing and isn't credible in any way shape or form.

  • Alex Andronov14/01/2010 at 19:04

    Good fun though

A good honest fun hist movie. How we gonna do it? Well we come in here, go there do this, wallop. And then they do that.

My favourite thing about the whole movie is Don Cheedles hopeless British accent. And also the Shaun Fanning (Napster creator) cameo.

  • Bassano14/01/2010 at 19:05

I ask as iTunes have both that AND the 2003 re-interpretation for £3.99

30 Days of Night is also in the cheap section, which is a pretty decent low budget horror-ish flick

  • Adie14/01/2010 at 19:05

It seems I've fallen into that category! ;)

it isn't based in any form of fact. it's purely an exercise in marketing and isn't credible in any way shape or form.

A lot more people know about the FTSE 100 than read the Financial Times. But at least the FT publish how their system works and there is, I suppose, some point to it.

  • Bassano14/01/2010 at 19:07

I think I've decided that if the predicted Mac Tablet is too expensive or too feature-lite, I'm probably going for Quad Core iMac 27"

I have not... I believe... I am convinced that a) the first thing out of the box when Steve Jobs came back and he asked, "show me the cool stuff" was a tablet, b) they couldn't get it to fly with technology as it was so they made the revolution in UI design of the tablet into a phone, and c) this is the device they always intended.

Why should I know which folder my files are in? Why should I worry about installing software?

This is how it's going to be I think.

I have to say... I will freely admit to being in love with the new way. I bought the first mac in years that I've owned because of the iPhone and it's disappointed me because it's not iPhone enough. I know this sounds mad.

I am mad enought to have owned each of the three generations of the iPhone though so I am NOT TO BE TRUSTED ;)

I am mad enought to have owned each of the three generations of the iPhone though so I am NOT TO BE TRUSTED ;)

I've never really used a mac to be honest. Used to be a desktop and server engineer so Windows was effectively my life. Sad I know.

Don't work in that field any more so open to new things, if a mac was like the iphone it'd be great, but the last time I used one was in an Apple store and I couldn't get on with the OS.

And don't get me started on the lack of a right click!!!

  • Alex Andronov14/01/2010 at 19:28

Well yes. I wouldn't want to lose my iPhone either...

Personally I am really really really really hoping for a 3G data only package to be with it as an option. Because I don't want people to keep making devices that can't be used out and about. I wonder if they'll have learned their lesson and make it contract-less but you can slot a 3G sim in.

  • me14/01/2010 at 19:29

Bit of both really. I haven't paid too much attention to it as I blog mostly as a medium to voice my thoughts, with the internet saturated as it is with blogs and f1 news sites it's hard to do something that stands out - SPC is excellent in that it's very unique.

I've found Twitter a good medium to bounce ideas off of other bloggers and announce when there's an update on the site.

i would expect a lot of new f1 podcasts to start this year. am surprised it's taken this long.

in the end though, we follow blogs because of who writes and what they write, not because they update ever 15minutes or claim "exclusives". people matter.

Agreed. I try hard to inject my thoughts into posts to make them interesting.

I'm also aware I fail miserably at doing that at times. I made a decision a little while ago to move away from 'News' per-se. That's been done, and is done to death elsewhere. Part of the blog will always by nature, be like that though.

One of the more popular things I did was the fuel predictions once released. The stats showed it being linked too all over the world, and it peaked after the Brazilian GP IIRC at 980 views between qualli and the race. I'm sad to see refuelling go on that basis alone

When Bernie announced his shortcut idea I thought he was just chucking something out for the media to create a frenzy about. Then I thought who would benefit from such a thing. The same guy who benefitted from Ross Brawn finding him an empty bit of track where he could bang in 12 quali laps.

It happens to the best. I remember reading a piece by Nigel Roebuck where he was talking about interviewing Jackie Stewart. It was one of his first big interviews and after an hour he discovered he had not pressed record. He asked JYS if they could start again but JYS was heading for the airport. He offered Roebuck the hance to do the whole interview again in the car on the way.

I was writing something for work on LaTeX at home. Half-way through I wanted to check if it was going OK, and tried to compile it... wrong! you don't have latex installed on this computer!!

Nero? Depends if you wanna mount the iso file to a drive or whatever. I just uses WinRAR to extract the files from the iso.

    Gems such as:

"Oompa loompas don't sing in heaven. They tidy up the clouds."

"Legs time! Everybody get your legs!"

"Don't... Don't put the noodles and the dumplings together in the boat. They'll fight! The noodles are bullies. Poor dumplings."

"I haven't put on weight. Your eyes are fat."

"My vision of hell is a lentil casserole."

"I've got a really terrible terrible feeling about this custard tart. Terrible."

"I can't control the kittens. Too many whiskers! Too many whiskers!"

hmm. intentional, to confuse anyone ripping the feed for content scraping purposes. will have a think, but all styles are deliberately broken in the rss feed at the moment.

Ah okay. I haven't had a particular problem before, maybe I was tired. But this time it caught me both times and I thought, "hold on I've just read that" or "what score? eh?" Left me with a kind of "something odd's going on here feeling". But fine once I looked at the site.
