Here we are at Wednesday, and supposedly the weathermen and women predict more snow. Weird though, because everything they've predicted so far has not happened, so I am not sure I'll believe them this time either. Anyway, here are some of the F1 things that are on our mind:

  • Virgin Racing are having a reshuffle before they've even begun, with John Booth taking over as team principal from Alex Tai. I didn't realise this Tai fellow had taken over, but it doesn't matter now as he has handed the reigns back, saying he would rather move on to fresh projects.
  • Schumacher got behind the wheel of the GP2 car today - we posted a couple of pictures on the drop. It was a bit damp out there in Jerez, though, and he only managed just over 50 laps before calling it a halt. Still, a couple more days to go, so we'll keep an eye on his progress.
  • Red Bull have suggested they won't be at the first test of the season, which simply echoes what they did last year. The story features in today's F1 Minute, and it also got me thinking about testing in general - so I wrote up some of my thoughts about visiting one of the pre-season tests.

That will do for now, keep your eyes peeled for F1 news, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

Wow, where did that come from? We haven't had engine badging in F1 for ages. And true to the form of old, I've never heard of the badge...

Marussia is a sportscar company owned by Russian GT racer Nikolay Fomenko. Car is very ugly methinks.

So it is an electric car. This looks like a classic Branson deal. I bet he ends up as the importer for them in several countries and uses them to get someo of his businesses into Russia. I wouldn't be surprised if he invests in Marussia like he did with the space program.

One of my alarm clock does that, and it is an annoying beep sound which turns to a louder beep-beep and then a loud beep-beep-beep. 5 or 10 mins before that I have the radio come on but it usually goes off within a few seconds.

I've just got some black-out blinds, not for light but because they are thermal. The problem is in the morning it is now very dark in the room and I have no sense of time.

It's a pretty name, though I have never heard of the company either. £1.5 million is good to have in the bank for both Virgin and Cosworth.

Missing the first Valencia test could be a small set-back, especially if Silverstone is still snow-bound, but there are advantages. It will be close to home so if anything is disastrously wrong on the car, new bits can be sent down from the home base. Also, Silverstone actually appears on the calender, so the data may come in particularly useful for seeing how the car reacts to cross-winds and so on.

  • Steven Roy13/01/2010 at 11:04

Most shortages are caused by panic buying.

  • Alex Andronov13/01/2010 at 11:04

Who can remember what the greatest thing before sliced bread was? You would think if they could make and deliver the bread slicing should not be a major problem.

The thing is non-sliced bread is much much better. So I would like to say that the best thing since sliced bread is unsliced bread. And my guess is that unsliced bread was the best thing before sliced bread.

    So I think it goes

All of recorded history pre-sliced bread: Bread

Week sliced bread came out: Sliced Bread (Novelty value)

    Since then: Bread

  • Steven Roy13/01/2010 at 11:06

The thing I could never figure out was why sliced bread and not sliced bacon for example.

Apparently Wonder Bread had a massive advertising campaign extolling their sliced bread. I actually saw a talk about it at one point. Because apparently everybody thought they had invented it. But actually somebody else did, it never caught on, and Wonderbread waited 30 years until the patent expired and then made a gigantic campaign which worked because it made people feel silly if they were still wasting their time cutting bread.

Aaaand the confusion begins. Jon Noble is saying..

Ignore the stories suggesting Virgin's Cosworth engines are about to be rebranded as 'Marussia'. The company is simply a team partner

    So... they're not Marussia?

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 11:13

Ok...so I had to go to the Doctor's today, I've been on a repeat prescription, and because I've moved, I can't get another one until i'd seen the doctor...

So I go in, tell him what I wanted more of, I explained why i was put on them etc etc, but he gave me a funny look...

He then showed me that the medicine that i'm on has been red listed in this area....and he is banned from giving it to me...because...wait for it....it dosent work....

But i've been on it for ages, and it does...

So turns out that you can get it in Essex but not in High Wycombe. grrrr

  • Steven Roy13/01/2010 at 11:13

Interesting to see that Stefanano wants the USGP back...

It is by far their biggest market so I am not surprised. I wouldn't put it past Bernie to have pulled the US race because Ferrari were misbehaving.

    Guys, I need some advice,

Last year we got taken out for dinner by a client and because I was sick I overdid it, made a little messs and ended up staying overnight at a friend's who works for said client.

The general consensus was that I was a bit silly but no damage was done. I have been teased by my colleagues and the client but generally it was just found to be funny. In no way would it have damaged any relations or deals etc...

Anyway, my question is, they have invited us again to the same restaurant.

    Shall I go or not?

  • Lukeh13/01/2010 at 12:13

    Shall I go or not?

I don't see why not? They've invited you so what's the problem?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/01/2010 at 12:13

    Shall I go or not?

I don't see why not? They've invited you so what's the problem?

Because it will be brought up again.

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 12:14

    Shall I go or not?

Just don't over do it, should be fine.

  • Journeyer13/01/2010 at 12:14

    Shall I go or not?

I say go. Why not? Would be a bit more embarrassing if you didn't. If this goes fine, they'll have forgotten (more or less) what happened last time.

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 12:14

Because it will be brought up again.

Just don't be sick. They'll bring it up once and then drop it

  • Lukeh13/01/2010 at 12:15

Because it will be brought up again.

Don't worry about it. My sister always teases me about my birthday and the fact I may have given her a bit of a mess to tidy up the morning after the celebrations ;)

It happens. No point in letting it stop you going out with your colleagues.

When will Nelson Piquet be allowed back into mainstream european/worldwide Motorsport (nascar dosent count), have been reading something on his site saying he'd like to win Le Mans, but when do you think all his stuff will be forgotten and he'll get to come back into proper motorsport?

not that anyone (as far as im aware) actually knows what he does..

    Does it matter?

    Does it matter?

    nope :)

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 16:46

I was comparing him to all the hopefuls who seem to be getting seats with no where near the same success.

He's been unlucky in F1, but i dont think he's amazing.

You are comparing him to the driver that has scored the most points over the last three seasons in F1.

So? He was the class of the '06 season, he's who you compare people too

  • me13/01/2010 at 16:46

    Is 'genius' a qualified job?

    i am bladerunner.

    even with those hours yes

  • Rich13/01/2010 at 16:47

Didn't he get into F1 because he was Flavio's boy?

who promptly sacrificed him and let him down in every conceivable way. I am not saying PK is top but I reckon he is better than Grosjean, Tim and Kamui.

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 16:47

    even with those hours yes

nb; my point is that it would have to be a job i'd like for me to do those hours. i wouldnt automatically do it because there was less hours

The point is you are comparing to the best talent that has arrived in the last three years. I am saying in terms of driving there are less deserving drivers with seats. There are also more deserving drivers currently without seats (Nick and Sato come to mind).

Jon, save this comment and read it again in 10 years. We all think we can save the world when we are at Uni. The Cold truth is it helps you a little in getting a job but you still have to start from the bottom I am afraid...

Well, thats not really true in what I want to do, seeing as you have to have a degree to be a teacher, and so i need this to do a PGCE at the end, and if you think im nieve in thinking that i can change the world then you're wrong because i dont, and making me seem to be some nieve kid because i actually want to work for a living enjoying my job rather than just doing minimum hours, then i'm a nieve kid and i'll stay like that in my thinking.

I like my job too and to be honest it's worth all of the hassle in the end - but I am in a completely different place to where I thought of in lots of ways!

  • Rich13/01/2010 at 17:01

Rich, in all fairness he was the yardstick and in the same car. After our discussion the other day I can't see how you wouldn't compare them.

Not sure what you mean by yardstick. I am comparing him to other drivers with racing seats. Put him in the same car as Kamui and he would beat him more times than not. Look how badly Fisi did in the Ferrari? We only saw PK in a Renault where everything was favouring Alonso. There were times in 2008 that he matched Alonso (French GP?) - Grosjean simply loked so out of his depth it was nearly as embarrassing as Badoer. Tim's Abu Dhabi pit blunder was also fairly embarrassing.

Fair enough Jon, I don't think you are Naive at all - to be honest, it's more of a fault of the 'system', which leads you to believe you have to go to uni to succeed and that once you graduate, the world is your oyster.

If you feel that passionate then you will succeed for sure - you are certainly going to need it if you are going to be a teacher, sir!

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 17:04

I work long hours and I loves my job. I wouldn't be able to do my job with fewer hours so... I guess I love longer hours.

I am saying it is unfair to compare PK in Renault F1 with Fat Flav sabotaging and undermining him to Lewis in a McLaren who has number 1 status. Lewis was significantly better than the rest in GP2, but PK was second best to Lewis. You cannot fill a grid with only GP2 champions!

I think it's easier said than done, they do look incredibly similar.

It is, I think a first in F1, to drive into the wrong pit stop - I think that counts as slightly embarrassing.

New teams taking on pay drivers for both slots are basically little more than oxygen thieves - they will be thrashed and is actually making F1 into a two tier race. If they cannot afford one decent driver they should not be on the grid. I understand STR's reason and their is some validity there since they are/were the sister team.

  • Nick in Dubai13/01/2010 at 17:20

Luckily most of them arent the traditional type of pay drivers, they are sponsored. if they are embarresing im sure the sponsors will look for a new prodigee

  • Rich13/01/2010 at 17:23

Luckily most of them arent the traditional type of pay drivers, they are sponsored. if they are embarresing im sure the sponsors will look for a new prodigee

but a team that cannot afford even one driver with GP experience? It is not helping the new guys and they will be so far off the pace it will be a joke. It is doing the opposite it is setting them up to fail and wreaking their reputations.

  • Nick in Dubai13/01/2010 at 17:25

Well think of them like bonus cars.

If we were stuck at 10 teams there wouldnt have been spaces for many new drivers, at least this way if a young guy can prove himself, get sponsored, then he at least has a chance

  • Jon Waldock13/01/2010 at 17:27

I agree that more-money-than-talent-drivers are annoying, you get that with all formulas, but i think lower teams add to F1, for that fleeting moment where they get that final point or that win (vettel-str) when they werent expected too

  • me13/01/2010 at 17:27

and making it a two tier system. The new drivers need not just driver but mentorship - like Williams hiring Rubens.

my example is Tim, probably not a bad driver, but huge nationalist sponsorship and he really did not do well - we all knew it was not going to work. Should focus somewhere else and give a driver like Christian or Ant a chance. In the case of PK, if he were with say Bruno at Campos - he will have some experience to help the newcomer. Judging him entirely on his Renault F1 career is somewhat harsh.

    Or something like that.

  • Steven Roy13/01/2010 at 19:24

No-one is going to make a huge announcement on the first morning of a show before the majority of the people arrive. My guess is this is going to be something trivial

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/01/2010 at 19:25

Apparently they had a 3d version at CES

There were 3D versions of lots and lots of games at CES mind you

The best way to find out who is there when is to check the list on the cameras. AUTOSPORT's cameramen hav to be right up to date with developments where everything else can be a bit out.

  • Bill13/01/2010 at 20:26

Strangely enough I had a discussion with someone I work with about just this, although rather than being a shortcut, we decided an alternative route of an equal length would allow a faster car to go round a corner at the speed it's capable of, rather than losing all the downforce following another.

FOTA are discussing changes to the circuits, but they are focussing the somewhat less provocative idea of tight corners at the beginning and end of long straights.

There is an amazing new road that cuts from the old road from Dubai to Abu City across Yas Island past the circuit and across the Island and the next island arriving straight into the city... it had only been opened just before the race and was like a completely empty M25.....

    It is, I think a first in F1, to drive into the wrong pit stop - I think that counts as slightly embarrassing. {Comment #283}

It's happened a few times in practise sessions before - Jean Alesi drove into the Prost garage the first practise session after he switched to Jordan in Hungary 2001 and Giancarlo Fisichella drove into the Renault garage the first practise session after switching to Jordan in Australia 2002 - but it's the first time I've heard of it happening in an actual race.

Nearly getting in another driver's way and then having the car stop halfway round the next lap (making people mistakenly believe for the next 10 minutes that he'd run out of fuel) didn't help either. It was a one-in-a-career mistake and it was certainly done in style!

  • Tom G13/01/2010 at 22:02

I sometimes like rugby. I tried to watch American Football and got confused but it was interesting to see the differences (and the referee mic system is brilliant)

The mic on the Referee is a very good idea, it means everyone is aware of the penalties, whether at the game or watching on television. The whole system in the game is incredibly good, you know exactly what happened. For example, at the 2008 NFL International Series at Wembley, a member of the coaching staff asked a question on the penalty given during a commercial break, the Referee stepped in and explained the ruling to the whole crowd.
