Tuesday arrives, and it is time to wish Tom G a very happy birthday! I hope the weather isn't too bad for you, Mr Tom, and that you are not falling down anywhere! I notice there were some Tom-shaped updates on the Sporting Injuries page on the wiki - don't forget to update it if you have anything to add! Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Alonso has been spotted out and about with his new Ferrari team, wearing some particularly striking red outfits. There are a few pictures on the drop. It's interesting that Alonso looks right at home in the red, whilst Button's appearance in his new McLaren gear was a bit of a shock. It's also good to see Massa looking so well.
- Kovalainen has been talking about who he thinks will be battling it out in 2010, and has picked out Alonso vs Hamilton for the championship fight. This is bringing back all kinds of memories from 2007, and the debate is raging in the comments once more. If Kovi is right, I hope F1 is prepared!
- Today, Michael Schumacher is getting behind the wheel of a GP2 car at Jerez in a development test for the series, which presumably also helps him continue to acclimatise to driving fast again. It's an interesting mix of the oldest driver on the grid taking part in the feeder series testing for young drivers to get into F1. I'm sure they'll be some pictures throughout the day.
That's all for now. Let us know what you're up to and how the weather is where you are, and I will see you in the comments.
quick plug for pat's calendar, cause it's ace:

Mr Tom, eh? I like. Thank you Christine and Mr C! :)
Happy birthday Tom!
Thanks :-)
Does it work ok?
yay. happy b'day mr. t.
I pity da fool?
tis perfect. although the best thing by far is having it in your hompage sidebar, we may have to steal that idea!
Just to comment on the mention of MS in the GP2 car. The loophole is that he is driving the 'development car' rather than testing for a team even though Super Nova will be running the car. My understanding is there is a regulation preventing F1 drivers from taking part in GP2, although I might be confused and it might only apply to past GP2 champions?
i still call it cheating. just cause.
It was always going in the sidebar somehow, I love sidebars :-) Thanks.
Happy birthday Tom! I'll spare you my singing here too ;)
Yes please, saves me sitting here feeling awkward over a piece of text! :D
Happy birthday to Des O'Connor too.
Awww.... :D
yay its tuesday. New glasses day!
i thought your glasses are fine?
It's Heather Mills' birthday too?
*eyes
Amazing what you can find on Wikipedia. I only went to see who else was born today and found Ray Harroun, the man who decided to use a rear view mirror instead of a riding mechanic in the first Indy 500. He won.
Oh, and Michael Aspel, Kirstie Alley, Howard Stern and Pixie Lott.
I've only heard of Michael Aspel and Pixie Lott out of those lot. It's also Zack de la Rocha's birthday (lead singer of Rage Against the Machine).
my prescription hasnt changed but my glasses are well past it. New ones are ready at lunch time :D
I officially declare it a white birthday, there's still snow on the lawn!
I think Kovalainen just wouldn't like to say that Jeson fighting Alonso would be 2010 championship fight, as jeson taking his place in Mclaren.
If it were Alonso v Hamilton, that would be spectacular. If it were Alonso v Hamilton v Schumacher, that would be FAAAANTASTIC! :D
why no pics on dropio yet? :-)
Happy Birthday Tom G and all these people:

Morning everyone :)
*waves*
This morning I feel particularly tired. Which is not great considering I am out tonight to some big party. Why would you put a big party in January?
i guess because there are too many in december?
Good point!
although, i can't say i'd be in a party mood this time of year.
I know. I've got to get dressed up in a dinner jacket. It's an awards dinner, the host is Dara Ó Briain so at least that's something.
watch your tie!
With a bow tie it's harder to hit!
for most people... yes.
I'll let you know!
i'm expecting pics?
;)
I'm going with fourstar. We should be able to work something out!
parcel tape around the waist not go down so well? what kinda party is this?
:)
I am behind the camera, not in front of it :D
An uptight one!
Morning.
Just when we were starting to get rid of the snow, another 10cm fell last night. But only in the town in Denmark I live in apparently!
Arrrgh I am too used to pressing 'Tab' during the doohickey that I am doing it when typing emails and stuff now!
coming soon... ctrl+enter.
Morning all. Thought I'd come say hello as I currently have nothing better to do.
It's a revolution :D

cummerbund
Hey there. Mind if I camp here for 5 minutes while my train completes the journey?
that's what I'm doing :-)
a bit more than 5 mins though
Hmmm.
Red Bull to skip opening pre-season test
Interesting decision. But hey, if it worked for them last year, why not this year?
less time for the others to copy their radical ideas?
i like noise-cancelling earphones!
Welcome to the future: Alonso arrives at Madonna di Campiglio
Never thought I'd see the day. But there ya go.
you'll have to speak up - I'm wearing a towel
VERY good point, Jeremy.
What kind? I used to have active ones but I switched to earplugphonethings...
and that's my Sidepodlot for this morning. See you laters!
See ya, Mr Turkey. ;)
@gavin passive, but they're fantastic because others can't hear what you're hearing.
Exactly - for the train and outdoors they are excellent for podcasts. I think I use about 25% less volume because of them!
It's interesting that testing is so limited and they're still choosing not to take every opportunity.
Don't tell Mr C, or he'll go off on one about testing being pointless again.
Morning all
Morning!
A potted history of Mac OSX: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/01/mac-os-x-revisited.ars
The iPhone has the best touch screen on the market apparently: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/01/iphone-tops-several-android-phones-on-touchscreen-accuracy.ars
Firstly, that's interesting considering how the other screens should be newer and therefore evolve the tech.
Secondly, the patterns are pretty :)
if anything, it should affect them less this year than last. The rule changes this year aren't as big, and I think there's more testing days this year than last.
schumi and a gp2 car: http://twitpic.com/xrwfw

heard that!
I don't remember his helmet being Mclaren orange!
Oops.
better pic: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/schumi-gp2-png
How much are you betting that his helmet colours will change before Bahrain?
Ah, yes, I can confirm that is him :P
Unless that pesky Ralf has been sneaky...

The sources are multiplying all the time with the Swiss and the Spanish now reporting that the announcement of Pedro de la Rosa as Kamui Kobayashi’s team-mate is now imminent.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/de-la-rosa-and-sauber/
i'm not betting nothing else this season.
It's a good choice I reckon.
i can see him being another wurz.
Hedgehog!
:)
I wouldn't, but surely he must? But then, Ralf stayed with a yellow helmet even after leaving Jordan.
Christine I know you didn't like last week's question post from me because it was about movies... But this weeks is about the internet... Surely that's got to be better?
http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2010/01/describe-internet-in-140-characters.html
i.e. Good enough for the occasional excellent result but not good enough for a second season?
Hehe, it's not that I didn't like it, it's just I was incapable of answering :) This is better.
does it have to be exactly 140 or can it be less :D
hehe, done and done :)
It can be fewer.
I've fixed the post.
that's odd... lukeh's greggs picture may have been more accurate than expected.

He has seen a Greggs far away in the distance... :)

Is it me or does he look very... dazed, or out of it? Ii almost looks like a waxwork. Which is odd because the picture of Anando staring at pictures yesterday looked like a waxwork too!

on another note I want that ferrari top. I never thought I'd want anything ferrari!
:)
ahh, it's gonna be a fun season.
the very first thing I noticed was that all of them fold their arms in such a way that their sponsors-watch-arm ends up on top.
looks like one of the characters from family guy. can't remember which.
quagmire?
probably. that or i need new glasses.
its ok, I got new glasses today and I can see the resemblance :D
My understanding is there is a regulation preventing F1 drivers from taking part in GP2, although I might be confused and it might only apply to past GP2 champions? {Comment #8}
No such regulation exists (to GP2 champions or otherwise). F1 drivers (even reserve ones) can't do GP2 races because they are on the same weekend as F1 races and mandatory elements of them clash (I believe these relate to either press conferences or the autograph sessions). The International Sporting Code states that if you miss a mandatory element of one race because of participation in another, you are subject to a fine as well as automatic disqualification from whichever event's mandatory element you missed.
Since Michael isn't supposed to be doing any FIA-sanctioned motorsport this week, the regulation does not apply.
I think it's not within the spirit of the regulations, but it is within the letter and therefore I don't feel as annoyed at this as I do about USF1 getting extra test days.
Morning Sidepodders....
SB is right and Mr C is right too, what an odd picture.
On a side note why did they have to go all 3D in the Disney-castle beginning bit! I know it's been ages since it changed...but still!
same.
the only GP2 regs i can think of are if you win the title, you cant come back the following season.
How is everyone?

thank ya.

The sources are multiplying all the time with the Swiss and the Spanish now reporting that the announcement of Pedro de la Rosa as Kamui Kobayashi’s team-mate is now imminent. {Comment #79}
I hope all these sources are wrong, because I can see de la Rosa's return backfiring more than Michael Schumacher's. If Peter does this, he's told me his team is absolutely desperate for money...
#shouldhaveboughtabiggersuitcase
:(
just pack lighter, its hot over there. How long are you going for?
This may not necessarily down to money. Pedalo isn't exactly flush for cash - that's why Campos couldn't hire him even if they wanted to. So if they're hiring Pedalo, it probably isn't because of the money.
10 days.
I'm too excited about wearing all my nice summery stuff to bring less. It's too cold here!
I probably missed this - where are you going, Alison?
for ten days I would take like two things. I'm an awesome packer.
I'm normally quite a good packer. I've never even owned a sensible sized suitcase before. I want to wear nice dresses that I've had in boxes though.
I'm off to Dubai to see Nick :)
Alonso in Ferrari red was already in the daily post, hehehe.
I think we're not so shocked in Alonso's case because we've seen him wear red quite a bit - the Renault 2009 kit had some red in it, and of course his 2007 with McLaren had a lot of red (albeit in a slightly different day-glo rocket red shade).
Excellent! Enjoy yourself over there. :D
I'm about to get to the point where I don't even bring the suitcase it's annoying me so much.....
In other words, you want to look extra-pretty? :D Hehehe.
And then you would have 1 set of clothes.....so that wouldnt be a sensible idea ;)
well there's a motley crew right there. they look like they work for usf1.
This may not necessarily down to money. Pedalo isn't exactly flush for cash - that's why Campos couldn't hire him even if they wanted to. So if they're hiring Pedalo, it probably isn't because of the money. {Comment #129}
In that case, the decision makes no sense because of the three candidates for the Sauber post, de la Rosa is the worst-performing, least experienced and rustiest...
It's winter here though. Icy snowed in winter. I've not been able to wear summer stuff for months. I kinda missed this summer too in work. It's more that I'm very attached to the skirts. I can't just abandon them at home....
He does come from McLaren, though, and the knowledge he got from his days there might be what's convincing Peter Sauber to get him.
Perhaps. But Jenson went from white to silver which isn't exactly much of a jump.
ah no...
I've found a picture of USF1's entire workforce, you'd be surprised, theres actually quite a few of them...
http://www.usgpe.com/jpeg/motorland/motorlandannouncement1-rg.jpg
It's not the silver throwing me off in Jenson's case - it's the red. Especially after seeing him wear a lot of green the last three years.
Exactly! Problem solved :D
alia... are you sure?
i thought liuzzi couldn't do gp2 because he was too experienced?
but they'd be the one's you're wearing...so you'd just boil the whole time!
I'm sure you'll figure something out. ;)
:)
i may be wrong...but GP2 was Int F3000 before...and if you've won GP2 then you cant return, Liuzzi won F3000 and so the same rule may apply
Buy a bigger case? I'm sure I'll be able to leave some stuff alone. I just hadn't considered this being a problem. This case is double the size of anything I've even owned before and I've always managed.....
he won it the year before it turned into GP2
Wow. This trip must be special, then. ;)
Hehe. :D Well, I guess if you really can't leave anything behind, either you have to buy a bigger case or bring a second smaller case.
What pay for extra baggage allowance?? Are you mad?
It would be worse if he'd gone to Ferrari then.
It's the price you pay. ;) Better off leaving stuff behind, then...
The odds of that happening would make some very rich. :D
make sure you leave room for shopping.
You think I have money for shopping? :P I guess I can always abandon some stuff there....
At least you'll have extra clothes when you go back to Dubai. :D
Nick already stole some of my stuff when he went over there!
nick wears your clothes?
that went through my mind as well.
That is far more information than we need!!
This can only end well!
i'm not judging. was just surprised. don't mind me.
Hahaha I left some stuffs by accident and instead of returning them to me, he put them in his suitcase! Maybe I should be worried....
whatever floats his boat
that explains alot
Rapidly changing the subject, then, why is it news that the Cosworth engines are ready to be shipped? Were we concerned they wouldn't be?
thank you
slow news day and they sent out a press release and a picture.
is it a good picture?
it's a picture of 10 engines.
so no.
bah.
It seems a little bit Bridgestone, in that they need people to be talking about them. Otherwise Mercedes are getting all the headlines.
Following your expert advice, I've decided to go pack my case without further input!
i think it's more... we promise we're being equal, so here they all are lined up, ready for all the teams at once.
except for usf1, cause theirs will take longer to get there.
Bah, and they need theirs for the extra testing days!
if i was one of the new teams i'd ask for the same to see if they say yes
yes, but being based in america is so much more... well more.
Afternoon all,
A couple of observations from the pictures on dropio. I am surprised Schumacher is wearing an all red helmet. I assume he will be changing the colour just as he did when he went to Ferrari.
It looks like we can expect a poor season for Ferrari this year. Every time they put a lot of white on the car or their drivers they have a bad season.
any idea why he has turned into david coulthard?
Many years ago DC borrowed one of Schumacher's helmets at Monaco as his own were misting up and he couldn't see. I was amazed at the time that the same helmet fitted both heads. Maybe the chin disguised the jaw in the past.
They wore a lot of white in 2007, and they were fine. They didn't win any titles in 1998 or 1993, though...
1975-1977 were good years too ;)
No white visor yet for DC then? ;)
I love to joke that DC and Schumi actually swapped cars that day... :D
*ahem*
That went well. :) soon I shall know Amy's joy of a new pair of specs!
to be precise I got these and these (in purple of course) and I am not a man nor a child! I swear they were both on the ladies rack in the store!
They look cool but I hate the brand name. Just a silly name!
It scares old ladies :( It was the only plain black pair of glasses in the store that fitted my stupid small head. The amount of bend they have to put in the arms to stop them falling off my face is ridiculous. The glasses man was like 'wow there really is no distance between your eyes and ears!' but I think that is physically impossible :D
Is it Go to the Opticians week or something? :)
Definitely :)
You'd have to be blind not to notice that! ;)
I have a pair of silver metal reading glasses with brown arms. They are kinda square and modern but it took ages for me to get used to them. I hate having to wear them but I am a geek and I need them for VDU's!
I am very impressed. I have to be dragged to the optician.
Like Rachel in friends?
Mine are quite similar to the second ones you linked to actually, I have forgotten who made them though :( I saw them and it was love at first (albeit blurred) sight.
I find it kind of fun, I should go more often :D
Nooo, I don't think I mind poking stuff in my eye, although I've never used drops, so you never know!
(I looooove that bit!)
I came very close to buying two purple pairs but finally talked myself into perhaps getting two pairs that don't look exactly the same :D Specsavers and their two-for-the-price-of-one was very new to me, I'd only ever had one pair at a time before.
Is it hard to try on new frames when you can't even see? I am pleased I can still see perfectly in the mirror, frame choosing is important!
Hehehe. There must be a gap in the market for greeting cards with this message on.
It's a really very joyful bit. They look like they had a lot of fun doing it :)
I literally had my nose up against the mirror to see how it looked on me, that's how bad my sight is :(
Although the lovely opticianist (is that right?) said that my eyes have improved since my last visit 2 years ago which is excellent news!
optometrist. But I prefer your definition ;)
I am a blogamist :D
high five!
non-time specific greetings, sidepodders (sidepodees? sidepodettes?)
Ooooooooooooooh my. Broken Sword is coming to the iphone.
Today is a good day.
Good to read Lukeh's vision has improved - we'll all have to be more careful about what we write about him
Wooooooooo!
*holds face up against laptop screen to read*
:D
alia... are you sure?
i thought liuzzi couldn't do gp2 because he was too experienced? {Comment #148}
No. He couldn't do GP2 because he was a reserve F1 driver, which meant that he was supposed to be available for all mandatory F1 race weekend activities. Some of those clashed with GP2 mandatory activities.
kerrr-ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/12/video-nearly-killed-the-radio-star/
i swear joe said something different on an aside show, but i don't have time to prove it.
Afternoon.
I tried on Dad's (weak) reading glasses a while ago and it was like switching from normal TV to HD. Should get tested really...
He does come from McLaren, though, and the knowledge he got from his days there might be what's convincing Peter Sauber to get him. {Comment #143}
It didn't help him with the Force India in 2008; why would it help Sauber now?
Hulkenberg was reserve last year and raced in GP2
While tidying up I found a pair of my old glasses. Prescription's still pretty good but they made me feel sick.... It's apparently been too long since I could see properly for my head to like it.
my new glasses gave me the same 'woah, clear!' when I put them on which I was not expecting because the prescription is exactly the same as the ones I'd literally just taken off. I guess the lenses were more scratched than I realised :D
Ah I only see properly out of one eye :P
I'm shockingly long sighted in my right eye. Like I can't see beyond the length of my arm. I used to wear glasses but they just give me a kind of seasick feeling. I'm far too used to my blindness....
i swear joe said something different on an aside show, but i don't have time to prove it. {Comment #217}
If an experience-related regulation exists concerning GP2, nobody has bothered to write it into the official FIA regulations. It would be typical of the FIA if it enforcing rules that do not officially exist, though.
The "clashing events" thing definitely does exist in the International Sporting Code, so it's not even as if the FIA needs to invent a new regulation to stop F1 drivers from doing GP2 at the same time...
Hulkenberg was reserve last year and raced in GP2 {Comment #220}
Now that is strange. I was under the impression that that was technically impossible, if Williams had him as an official reserve (which, come to think of it, they did).
In that case, it looks like stupid unofficial regulations are in force...
2009 GP2 sporting regulations say "Any driver who previously won the GP2 Series Championship or any driver who completed a full season in
the FIA Formula One World Championship will not be permitted to participate in the Series."
fair enough. i don't see how they clash though, the cars aren't on track at the same time.
Ooooooooooh!!! I can check another bag into the hold within my allowance!! It's a happy day! I can put shampoo in there and keep it away from my nice clothes. Joy, pure joy!!
Is that why Pantano didn't race in it last year?
lower down the next page it also says "No driver nominated by a team participating in the FIA Formula One World Championship will be permitted
to participate in the Series."
ooh, that very well might be the one. thanks you amy.
Yep
and that might be even better. :)
Good. That was getting silly him being there!
I'm going to stop reading GP2 regulations now, I don't even watch it :D
More to the point, the driver is available at the right venue. There's an argument that with the lack of testing, F1 reserves should be in GP2 as a matter of course, to keep in racing trim. Even if that means they're non-point scoring combatants.
i couldn't even find them. well done.
oddly, I found them here http://www.acdme.com
Ahh. So if Grosjean had been let go by Renault late in 2009, he couldn't have gone back?
He wouldn't have been nominated anymore would he.....
nope. oddly jamie could still do the little car thing he was doing (i won't even attempt to guess). crazy regs.
I think in reality if a GP2 driver is called up to drive an F1 car, he'll drive it and leave the GP2 team without a driver. I also think the GP2 teams know and accept this, for the most part.
So the trick is for teams NOT to nominate a reserve driver
Is that what Red Bull were up to?
didn't they just panic because brendon wasn't good enough?
No, I'd still nominate a reserve, just have his GP2 team know about it so they can prepare their own.
good point.
but once you nominate... the driver can't do gp2?
Looks like Piquet is going to NASCAR
http://www.npiquet.com/news.asp?NewsID=365
ahahahaha.
proper nascar? not trucks?
he's going to suck at that. i absolutely have to watch.
Even I am tempted!
and he thinks he can win le mans?
its the ultimate challenge.
c'mon it'll be hilarious. he'll be worse than scott speed.
although you'll likely be asleep.
Best way to consume motorsport, I find.
:D
New tagline for you "We consume motorsport in our sleep"
Is he that outcast?
I hope he doesn't get in Franck's way.
Mansell and his kids are doing Le Mans too
Grrr, Klien.
That just makes it sound like they're taking the caravan over to France
Yes he can. Being nominated doesn't mean 'taking part in the F1 WC'.
:P:P
ah I misread it, sorry. 'team taking part'. right.
are you reading this line backwards... or am i:
"No driver nominated by a team participating in the FIA Formula One World Championship will be permitted to participate in the Series."
phew. i am a bit tired, and a bit stupid, but i was sure that bit was correct :)
heheh :-)
not sure. it only says 'NASCAR' so it could be any..
is nascar not the main series, or that the sprint, or race for the chase?
In Europe we say 'NASCAR' when we mean the Sprint Cup.
Highly unlikely he'll get a sprint cup ride - that would be impossible!
damn. there's no fun watching him in trucks :(
Is it an actual truck?
sadly not. this i think: http://www.welovesilverados.com/graphics/racing/racing.jpg
F1 cars are the Mona Lisa compared to whatever that ghastly monstrosity is!
At least he will fit in the caravan
Boo. I was hoping for Ice Road Truckers with a bit less ice.
yeeeouch!
http://www.britishtruckracing.co.uk/
fia sanctioned? good lord why?
Now that looks awesome. Piquet + that = disaster
There are several levels of NASCAR.
Sprint Cup is the top level
Nationwide is second division
ARCA something or other
All three use similar looking cars then there are trucks
Ooooooooh.
Piquet + any type of racing where crashing and bumping other cars is encouraged = disaster :)
that i was not expecting.
at least it looks like a proper truck!
Hello all.
This makes no sense to me.
Truck racing was really big about 10 years ago. There was a European championship with a few big name drivers in it. Trouble is they are so heavy that they are limited to 100 mph. If the driver goes over that limit they get a penalty.
Trucks slots in between Nationwide and ARCA, although I think it is viewed as a retirement home..
sounds like the M6.
I can't believe it actually exists.
It looked like it occasionally. The run into the first cornet could get really interesting.
Pretty sure there's an FIA European Truck series, or there was
I saw either the British or European truck series on TV a few times. It's part of that "International Motorsports" show Haymarket (if I'm not mistaken) puts together.
Truck Racing is Ace! I remember going to Donington as a kid to watch them :)
There was and maybe still is

Mr Piquet to Nascar
Official Confimation:
I do Not Wear Alison or any other women's clothes!!!
so the man who crashed deliberately is going to a place where drivers are routinely run off the road...
Clearly I have missed something. I am not surprised that you don't wear Alison's clothes since she is in a different country. Once she gets there the odds of you wearing her clothes must increase.
well she may be in a different country, her clothes...
What? That would mean either she posted her clothes to him or he took them with him. How likely are either of those?
Coming from the guy who can't put the straw in the proper place, I'm not sure I believe you! ;)
Ok, I will have to change the subject again.
She left a sock at my house... Since i was leaving the country and had no address i figured i would bring it with me then i could send it on to her, she then decided to come, so it is in my sock drawer awaiting a reunification with its partner!
Thank You!!!
Is pre-season testing open for people to go watch?
Should be
I apologise on Nick's behalf!
It looks like it http://www.circuitvalencia.com/
Ooops!
are we going?
I just realised I might quite fancy it.
me too. what does it cost?
See Mr C *some* people are interested in testing ;)
ahh, chuff :)
Looks like between 5 and 25 euros
http://www.circuitvalencia.com/ver_noticia.html?cnt_id=29417
five euros? just five euros?
Well that is certainly more appealing than Spa!!
If you can convince them you are under 10 it looks like you go free! :P
Afternoon everyone! How are you all?
and closer. so much closer.
i mean, physically it's probably farther away.
Tis the birthday boy!
We did get IDed recently, but 10 would be pushing it, I think.
Valencia is closer than Spa? Rockall must have been blown a long way south recently.
:)
is there testing at barcelona too? only cause i like the city.
Bother!
I believe there is.
Someone posted all the pre-season tests recently but I can't remember who or where.
It may or may not be on my brand spanking new calendar.
It is. I remember it there.
Afternoon all.
oooh. sorry.
No probs. RG remembers it better than I do!
My dog thought it was Christmas this morning. She was disappointed when she didn't get a present!
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/12/27/another-barrier-to-ice-cream/
HB mate!
So what did ya get then?
A traveller's guide book on Nepal, a new day rucksack for when I go, and money, mostly.
Dhanyabad! (That's Nepali for thank you!)
Haaaaaaaaaappy Birthday to Mr Tom
I've also been promised a trip to Norwich, that's not exciting usually, but my parents have said they'll buy me a bow! :D
Surely thats Nottingham?
It's a bit far for me to go just to buy a bow.
what kind of bow?
There was a Robin Hood link there... ;)
As in archery. It'll just be a basic one, I don't need much to be happy with.
I know, I know. ;)
yes, I know "as in Archery" ;)
Was just wondering what kind, compound, reflex, recurve, etc.
Ah yes, sorry. It'll be a recurve. Nothing special, just a riser, limbs and a string!
Happy Birthday Tom!
I once came very close to a very painful accident with archery. Put me off a bit :P
Dhanyabad!
I once caught myself quite badly on the inside of the arm with the string on a release a few years ago, left me with a huge bruise!
Should there just be a page on the wiki called 'Tom's sporting injuries'? ;)
very cool. It's something I've always wanted to try again, but am seriously lacking in time :)
Possibly, but that's the only archery injury I've got!
I go the the club at my school, usually it's for learning how to use the bows, but Mr Peck, the instructor, just lets me get on with it now.
How do you say "Miep Gies"
it's a name. Am struggling
ta :)
I have heard a few versions on the news. I don't think there are any Dutch speakers round here.
I'd guess at:
Mee-ip Ji-ese
yeah, thats what i thought. ta
Ah, just looked at the Anne Frank trending topic on Twitter, now I know what you're talking about.
I would say Meep Geese
ah. you know everything about names! therefore i shall follow you! mwaha
thank ye
Gaarrrgh, more snow. And it's bucketing it down too.
Shoo!
The dutch have a special way to pronounce 'g' which I can't describe.
This report comes close to the right pronunciation
(Also for Anne Frank if you're interested.)
oh dear. its not snowing this side of channel ;)
When you say that, I think you are in France...
hehe. i can assure i'm not. :)
Non?
i don't live in france ;)
Hi folks
Grrrrrrrrrr, I don't wanna work 2 out of every 3 weekends, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Video of Alonso in Ferrari gear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8JFMzezLSE
My computer froze on me. How dare it? I shall send it to the dungeons! Taking King for a day too seriously?
Happy birthday Tom, btw
Are you allowed hairspray on an aeroplane?
Thank you very much Bassano!
Fluids are limited to 100ml in hand luggage
Checked baggage will be fine
Awwww :(
Days off in the week are super fun though!
When do you go Alison?
Okay so it won't explode in my suitcase or anything? (I'm blaming you.....)
7 earlies, starting on a Friday are a KILLER, though
Missing heaps of Grands Prix too
Tomorrow!!! Packing and me aren't getting along!
No, you'll be fine
Same with anti-perspirant. Tis ok
Packing sux
I do it last thing before I go to bed, in about an hour
Treble check tickets & passport, anything else forgtton is tough
I'll buy it there
So Ferrari have some gear with two white sleeves, some with no white sleeves and some with one. How odd?
Is it like a substitute's kit? ;)
They have the white shirts that they used in free practice in singapore i believe as well.
Did Dan Gurney come up with the Gurney flap?
Can't remember which team it was [could be Jordan] but I remember one of the designers/engineers being a Kylie fan and named one of the appendages on their car a 'Kylie Flap'. That was years ago though
It's like the traditional Ferrari indecision from the pre-Schumacher era
Yes
I'm hungry, and I'd say I'd have some of the big bar of Galaxy a lovely friend gave me but my thieving friends stole most of it.
Video F1 Minute in the FBFB - perfect!
Hello again, home now.
I really should visit my sister in Spain. Wonder how cheap it is to fly from the various testing venues to Vigo or Porto...
Hi Pat
@AdamBaldwinF1:
Nelsinho Piquet says his immediate future is in NASCAR
Not his long term then, he knows what's coming after that and it's not a promotion ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurney_flap
http://www.allamericanracers.com/gurney_flap.html
Extremely simple yet highly effective
Train?
I was going to do it last week when I was more cheery about it but Nick told me this was a better plan....
I'm not hugely impressed right now!! :) I have tickets and my passport. I guess I'll survive....
Oh erm yeah that's pretty rubbish :( Do you get extra days off other times I presume?
There's not much that you can't pick up whilst there
I presume he has access to washing facilities so you'll be fine
I'm not sure I'm going near them until he's got the Dettol out..... ;)
Fri - Mon off. Then 7 lates [Tues - Mon] followed by 3 rest days
Start the cycle again, repeat until sick to death
I bet he has a cleaner by now :)
Or at least a temporary one to clear up before you arrive ;)
He needs one! He spilt something and I told him to get a cloth. He doesn't have a cloth.
That doesn't sound good
That would take a while.
At the moment it's 50/50 but my colleague has a better case for not being moved [he has kids and he coaches football on Saurdays]
Supposedly it's temporary until that shift moves to Mon-Fri's
Could be a month, could be 18 though :(
I have obtained root beer for lunch.
Awesome.
That shouldn't be how life works though! Just because you don't have kids, doesn't mean you shouldn't be allowed to have time off to enjoy your life!
What does he wipe the fridge with when he's storing the meat on the wrong shelves?
AAAAAARGH!
well said.
Such is the life of the single worker.
Nice vent on Twitter btw, I did something like that on FB the other day...
Agreed, but if I was the manager having to make the decision, I'd pick me too
Not sure if weekend working gives him childcare issues, that's a huge factor
I think it will be my latest FB update too
Then 'friend' as many people on BA as I can find ;)
*in BA
What you need is a Facebook group petition thing
TOMMMMMMMM!!
Yep, what do you want?
Can you...
Never mind, people have been sacked for less :)
Hehe you should write them a letter suggesting they don't discriminate against you due to your lifestyle choices. Either that or send them pictures of random babies and pretend you need to take them to swimming lessons on Sunday mornings :P
Have decided that if it's for more than a month or two then I'm gonna try to get out of this department. I can't face working 7's again long term.
Bad for my health & my social life
Yeah! How is shaving lady anyways, if it's not rude to ask?
whaaat???
hehehe, i know exactly what they're going on about, but it's amusing anyhow
The date I shaved for was a one-off
I was seeing someone else {the double date dilema, I had} for a month or two but that fizzled out before Christmas
Now they wanna take my weekends away, Nooooooooooooooo!
Booooooooooooooooo!!
Half the reason that the last long-term relationship failed was because I worked 7 lates in a row and we never saw each other for so long
Yeah I can see that. It's hard to get anything in a routine if the cycle doesn't even work on a normal weekly or fortnightly basis.
And she was living with me!
At least you'll always have your Guinness.... ;)
But seriously, those kind of jobs suck for social and relationship life.
Yeah, if it happens then I'm outa there as soon as I can transfer
Not many departments hiring at the moment and externally is not much better
Pressdog has video of IndyCar's new Sao Paulo street track. All we knew originally was that it was a street course, okay fine. Then they said Sao Paulo and everyone asked 'why not Interlagos?' or some other existing course. Now there is this video... and I can only see those questions being asked again.
http://pressdog.typepad.com/dogblog/2010/01/video-of-brazil.html
Yeah but that probably makes it worse! You'd almost be better off seeing each other once a week and being awake and cheerful.
this isn't the white visor, is it?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/the-blue-visor-png
alonso looks like he's been hit by a spade.
White visor! I need a white visor! Please, I cannot see!
True
The other reason was because we were in London & not Sydney [which is where she is now]
If it wasn't for the global recession, I'd possibly be living there now too
Undwivable undwivable?
And Massa looks as though they've just given him a wedgie
and what of giggles' blinds?
Eurgh! Too hot!!
The Blue Mountains is quite nice but there aren't many airports near there.
I need better transferable skills than aircraft maintenance
*are [not is]
If I knew how to draw those little hearts, I'd draw one now :P
The internet is killing my grammarz
At least you know it's wrong ;)
What anando is REALLY looking at on the wall :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/anandolaugh-png
Ha ha, Schuey's 'tache
Since when did they become ItaliaF1?
US F1 are Italian?
That explains a lot :)
Italian American!
All mouth, no substance? Sounds about right.... :P
Goodfellas F1
Eh... whatta you meana I gotta sella lotta toasters-a?
hehe!
They send one o'ours to tha pits, we send one o'there's to tha morgue!
10 points for the origin of that parody
Sean Connery in the Untouchables.
Godfather
Unthouchables?
Nope
Well done Jpan!
And Alison
Yaaaaay!
Best Brian de Palma film ever!
One of the few decent Costner films I can actually watch over again
[wardrobe by Georgio Armani - fact]
I fear we have gone off-topic.
Anyway, more video please Mr Windsor
[you don't need to be in them]
Well it's not like there's much more to say about USF1 to be honest :)
Sorry, force of habit ;)
*points to the daily, otherwise you're just creating us more work*
*sulks*
I'm sure you guys will find something to complain about ;)
[Goes to the naughty step for 5mins] ;)
It's what we do best
[Mock Americans ;)]
I guess the issue here is we go off on a tangent and then it snowballs. It's hard to judge when we go completely off-topic sometimes...
just think of it from a newbie's point of view.
You're right, it's why we have a Daily in the first place
I'm not really sulking :D I understand. Conversation is completely unmanageable! I don't envy you guys.
personal rule of thumb:
- is it about f1?
- is it about the topic in question
- can a new person with no prior spc knowledge understand the conversation?
and most importantly, can they get involved?
[US F1 Mockery continues]
How long is it going to be before someone put's Days of Thunder audio over one of US F1's vids :)
There's nothing I can't do with a race car
Fair enough.
I recall a time where I tried to answer and switched to the daily and you implied it was better to stay in the wrong thread as it was easier to move the comments later?
The other solution is to simply stop commenting?
Make me a racecar Harry
What is more difficult is working out how to get something from a breakout into the Daily without breaking that train too..
there is that too.
no. christine will shove you in the right direction :)
Quotes Pat from the other thread
Am trying that
Sorry, I didn't mean to mis-comment that one
Oooh I just had a thought. When Schumi collides with one of the USF1 guys:
"No, no, he didn't slam you, he didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you... he *rubbed* you. And rubbin, son, is racin'. "
Anyway, here is the car the Mansells will be driving at Le Mans :-)
(don't be put off by Planet Le Mans link, they aren't connected to PF1)
I find it curious that I haven't seen Days of Thunder, while some of you guys have!
Ooh, shiny...
Really? I love that film!
Its, quite blue.
Oh he can drive. He can drive beyond the limits of the tyres, the engine, the car - anything else
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOUfvcIw0q4
I don't think I could watch it again
I liked Cruise in that Jamie Foxx film but that was about it
Collateral
There are only 2 films Tom Cruise doesn't annoy me in - Rain Man and Tropic Thunder. The rest, psshshspshs.
Minority Report
Rain Men is great
Couldn't watch more than 15 mins of Tropic Thunder - terrible
[That's just a cameo for Tom though, isn't it]
Read the Philip K Dick story instead, better
Yeah he just dances about and swears for 20 minutes really :)
Incidentally, Slumdog Millionaire is on tomorrow at 9pm on Channel 4
We SO, should live comment it - it's a wicked film!
I've just had what I think is my last balanced meal for while.... #stupidvegetarian
Do they have felafels in Dubai?
They're lovely
I'd imagine so. They have humous. Maybe it was more of a slur on Nick's diet.... :P
I imagine you might eat out a lot ;)
Yeeeeessss I get that impression......
Though Nick still thinks lager is a major food group
Chups is vegetables right?
If you had said Ale, I would have agreed.
Only in New Zealand ;)
I've been drinking with Nick
He likes Fosters, I thought he was unwell at the time but apparently not
running away for a bit, hopefully back in time for tom's party (whenever that might be).
See ya in a bit
We'll try to stay on topic
Indeed. They go best with Fush ;)
well, we all know he's a bit... well... odd ;)
Yeah that's pretty gross! He asked me to get some at the duty free. I have politely declined....
in the daily? keep it clean and do as ya please ;)
That is true, he thought the Abu Dhabi GP was good
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/d/derby_county/8453055.stm
Listen to this....
It's....umm.....not sure what the word is!
Hehe, just finished it. No surprise from Robbie :)
That interview needs more photos
Jarno!!
Yeah, at least he'll be gone by the time I get into journalism (hopefully)
#pleasefortheloveofgoddontgointomanagement
#donthiremebbcnottingham
#orbbcderby
;)
Poor Nick. I might stop picking on him now....
Is someone being told off by a teacher here?
There's a bbc derby?
That's incredible. Robbie Savage suffers from 'Heather Mills Syndrome' - the more he says, the less he is right :D
Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage tells BBC Radio Derby that rumours.....
You tell me!
Now I just clicked on the pretty play button y'see
Urm, I think he's got a point?
Yeah I agree with him too, local radio should be behind their team not spreading silly rumours!
He's not handling it very well though
He did at the beginning - but then by the end he just was talking like Eddie
Hehe, that is true. 10 minutes worth of argument is stretching it a biiiiit too far...
Yes...but.....
It's journalism, they can do what they want. If they had good results, they wouldn;t have said it.
He's not exactly the one to back down though.
and then not answering any other questions...
A good football journalist would know what they were getting themselves into with with Robbie Savage ;)
F1 Minute plug: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/12/12-jan-10-red-bull-to-skip-first-test-of-the-year/
I'm imagining Roy Keane with Robbie Savage as his assitant manager. Oooh.
Team Stubborn!
You tell me, you've got all the answers :D
Ta
#WehaveTastyFoodToo
I havent cooked since I have been here...
*Affinity
Is this why you don't own a cloth?
Hello all, not had the best day but just catching up with the comments and laughing a lot. Thank you to everyone for cheering me up  Also, Happy Birthday Tom
Can you make Red Bull cakes though?
Nick, are you around in March?
Dubai, not England
Awe... Alison is lovely
Surely he spills the odd drop of beer on occasion?
The rest of us made no such promises ;)
I could, but i wouldnt, take out food is cheaper than cooking here => Fact
Really not sure yet, sorry dude
Hi Janna
YOU've had a bad day?
Evening.
I do!
*I was trying to convince her to do my washing*
Will chat nearer the time then
I've a flight to use up & Alex won't come to Manilla
Adjusted for truth
I know, I saw, poor you :(
The transport industry is 'the suck!'
*Alison needed me to explain where this is :P
And you said her geogphy was bad? :D
You are in SO much trouble right now!!!
Busted!
Speaking of Tom Cruise, the adaptation possibilities are endless, all you have to do is add some aviators (check!), Reagan-era attitude, and stir:
First 2010 press conference:
SUTIL: What's your problem, Trulli?
TRULLI: You're everyone's problem. Every time you drive, you're unsafe. I don't like you. You're dangerous.
SUTIL: That's right, Trulli. I am dangerous. (MOCKINGLY CLINCHES TEETH)
Reinvented in 2010, in 2nd place trailing whoever for the win...
SCHUMI: ...too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns.
...
BUTTON:...you can be my wingman anytime.
HAMILTON: Bulls--t. You can be mine.
If i had any wherewithal, I would put this on youtube immediately.
It's not even true!
I was referring to Nick
Ooops!
But I doooooo know where Manilla is!
*popcorn*
hahaha!
I suppose asking where won't be useful now.
I told her its circa Journeyer! :P
Ask Journeyer, he might know
I know where it is, it was to test Alison...
Someone cloned my Visa card and was trying to use it in Malta. There was mild confusion about where Malta is....
preposition
(often preceding a date) approximately : built circa 1935.
That's all!
I know where Malta is
It's where Maltesers are made
*Often not always, it maybe used in common usage
:P
by falcons
I think using maybe instead of may be might have harmed my case!
'Approximately' is still incorrect usage :D
This is also true
Maybe
I'm shocked you noticed....
You're a good influence, obviously
[You're = You are, Your = belonging to] :)
So, who's up for Live Commenting Slumdog Millionaire tomorrow?
#grammerqueens!
you crack me up you really do...
Surely you mean grammar?
You got there before me!
oh man
Can open. Worms... everywhere!
Now they're the queens of the spelling bee!
MR C!!!
Can we get spellcheck for doohickey please?
^ Jealous
#chrome ;)
Actually, Firefox has a plug-in too, I think
Or am I thinking of Safari on the Mac?
Im going to head to bed, big day tomorrow!
good knight to you all!
Night sir!
Seez ya fulla
Of course, the cleaner's coming in the morning before Alison arrives
Jenson can't spell either
http://twitpic.com/xtp9q
Talking of Jenson, Lukeh should watch out, Lou's invited him to come to hers for some skiing ;)
Good evening!
Writing the minutes of a meeting that took place a month ago is rather hard and tedious :( I'm having a break!
I will happily take second to jenson
How can you remember what they were talking about, since 98% of meetings are drivel
[Even if you have notes]
Exactly! I was supposed to write them up ages ago, but I didn't and am now regretting it! :(
Fact: I had a meeting this morning to establish how we could improve another, weekly meeting
WTF?
We're switching to an "agile development" methodology. Which doesn't have meetings, it has "Scrums".
Oh dear... thankfully we only have a monthly meeting/audit session which are usually productive. But my head of dept has endless useless meetings.
Our meetings just involve us sitting there listening to engineers - no point making a contribution as it's shot down anyway!
In my last department, the senior manager would have a team meeting on Monday morning so he would have all the answers to the potential rollicking in the meeting [about the SAME subject] with the big bosses
True
I wish! He was supposed to be cleaning tonight but apparently the pub is more appealing :P
At least the kitchen should be clean, if he never uses it
Mmmmm dusty!
I can't really judge.... I'm supposed to be packing but I'm definitely finding lying on the sofa to be more fun!
At least you're not in the pub
I can't get to the pub! Too cold!!!
that's the sound of a quitter talkin'! There is NO SUCH THING as "too cold" to go to the pub!
I'm not a big drinker tbh #sorrybassano
S'ok, designated drivers are always welcome at SidepodPubbing too ;)
A glamourous life you all want me to lead.... Washing, cleaning, driving! I think not :P
Okay action plan! Shower, finish packing, then relax! Serious risk of waking up in the morning and having a panic on!
Hope everything goes smoothly for your journey and remember, Don't Panic!
I'm not a nervous flyer particularly. I get very sore ears! I'm just highly disorganised :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwre_xhx6ow
Get drunk, fall asleep. Best strategy
Haven't heard that song in AGES
Madder Rose were brilliant
:D
Is how I manged to get to Sydney & back in Economy, twice
Better advice than what other people told me.... If one more person tells me it'll go away when I swallow I'll deck them! If your pain goes away when you swallow, it's on a whole different level to mine which feels like drilling into your skull might....
I hold my nose and blow till it pops
#maynotbesoundmedicaladvice
My grandma sucks on a mint. She claims it helps. You could try that...
Booze is more fun than mints
#bassano'srulesoflife
I'm scared I burst my ear drums. It doesn't pop! I'm maybe anatomically strange. The only person I've met that seems to get the pain is my mum. This might point to me being weirdly formed.....
Remind me to sit next to Amy at Spa! :p
Note to self: sticking out tongue smiley doesn't work!
It's just pressure trying to equalise whn the cabin altitude changes too quickly
Similar to when you go diving, they get you to do it then
:P
I'll make sure she's drunk by the time she arrives
[someone needs to on the way over and it can't be me if I'm driving]
But it won't go away.... Sometimes for hours after I've landed. It's that bad I feel like crying or rocking myself on the floor or something. I've never felt something so sore my whole life.
lol
I once had the most horrendous pain on take-off and landing but I had an awful cold at the time. It was so damn painful, like someone sticking knives in my ears!
Then you need to see an ear, nose and throat specialist.
Or try an ear canal spray?
You have complicated plumbing, have you seen any ear, nose & throat docs about it?
Seriously, have 3 or 4 drinks then snooze. [Have water on standby before sleeping]
Don't know what that is but sounds like it might be useful for unsticking boats
Yeah I guess. I can't breathe through my nose properly! I presume it's related.... I'm not sure it's worth doing anything about. It just makes me very dehydrated and yeah I have a painful flying problem. Not worth surgery....
It's just a saltwater solution you spray in your ears to keep 'em clean.
Works wonders and improves hearing response too!
Unless you want a new or straighter nose
Who said surgery?
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/12/ready-to-test-the-water/
I've seen a doctor about the dehydration before. I know I have oddly formed nasal passages. Your inner ear links in here. That's how the pressure is equalised. It makes sense that the problems are related.
:( My nose is fine thanks for asking. How rude!
I wouldn't suggest pipe cleaners
Oh my goodness. Now this is a mashup, I can't believe how well all 10 songs go into it!
Just checking
I'd expect better from you!
Sorry Bassano but I really wouldn't :-)
Hehehe poor nose....
Although you're better than Nick by an order of magnitude
None taken
I've never seen Alison's nose, I couldn't possibly comment on it's aesthetics
Wasn't poking fun, sorry for causing any offence
Hehe I'm not offended :D
Hahaha so nearly said this....
Phew, cos a driver would be really handy in Scotland ;)
[too soon?]
night guys!
Night Gavin
Loved the printer post by Oatmeal btw
Night
me too :-)
night mate.
Ooooh you think you're allowed to meet Alphonso? Pushing it a little perhaps....
You wanted me to babysit him last week
Your response has made me realise he needs more care than you can give!
This may be true, apparently - I'm a bad influence. Mr C said so
If I tweet a lot about Guinness, do you think they'll start following me too?
Maybe there are freebies to be had
Hello, sorry, meeting went on later than planned :( As much as I love this trip, over an hour on my birthday spent talking about it is not fun.
Is this the Everest thing?
Planning is probably advisable, if so
That reminds me. Happy birthday!
It is, yes, but we were just snowballing fundraising ideas about and listening to my teacher go on about all this really expensive equipment I don't need.
Thank you!
Cake is good though, redeemed the evening a bit.
Yay for cake! I get yummy cake tomorrow and on Friday too XD
It is chocolate, like I told you it would. Rather good too, even with bits of flake on it...
Mmmh sounds yum! One cake we're having is that Italian one that I can never remember the name of...
T'is rather. To the point of eating all 15 servings it apparently has...
Tiramisu or Panettone?
Ah that's it Panettone! Thanks :D
Isn't the last one a brand of shampoo? Oh, you said Panettone... :D
That's Christmas cake!
Oh right... feeling sick yet?
Oooh that smells very good while it's cooking. The taste always disappoints me!
Okay genuinely I'm going to pack! If you see me again ask me if I'm ready to pick up my case and walk out the door with it!!
It cracks me up that the Aussies or Americans call Pantene: Pan Teen
No, because I haven't done it. I don't think everyone else would be happy with me for eating it all.
http://italianfood.about.com/library/rec/blr0946.htm
Yep, a bit late and I'm sure the other cake we're having is Stollen.... hahaha
Is it just me or is it green?
Panettone lasts for ages, as long as it's not opened
It's yellow-ish but there are lot's of varieties
Maybe this one has spinach in it :)
That's how it's written :-)
I think it was a gift for one of my colleagues at work and she's bringing it in as her husband won't let her eat it.... nasty man!
It's Pan Ten!
Just how it's not Prem-eer. Prem-e-air!
More cake for you
Pat, did you see the Madder Rose link?
True, true! Lovely man, in that case then ;)
Mum's just forwarded a load of stupid exam answers. Inspiring stuff. I only wish I was that funny.
Yeah, it was good, never heard it before
I love Madder Rose
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madder_Rose
Their most famous song is probably Ultra Anxiety (Teenage Style)
Woohoo! I think I've finally finished writing the minutes, 3 weeks after I should have done them, oops. Just need to read them through and hope it all makes sense...
Procrastination? I'm an expert...
I would be, too, but I'm putting off practicing at it.
Oh I'm afraid I go beyond procrastination... I never do anything like that on time :(
I'm a pessimist, but not a very good one because I don't think I could do it.
The glass isn't half empty or half full, it's the wrong sized vessel for a given volume of liquid

Pretty good. Would probably have to listen a few times to 'get' it, I'm like that..

I used to have some, I'll DM you
Have blogged about islands and stuff: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/01/12/what-would-you-bring/

Have replied, although in predictable fashion perhaps :)
Wow, I'm tired. Do I really want an early night though? This day only comes round once a year and I want to savour it.
Interesting
I will have a think!
Really am surprised RG hasn't followed his idea through and put a Tom's Sporting Injury page up on the wiki.
Media work intervened.
Ah, I see.
Great hat

I appear to have the wiki open now however.
Right! You can all rest easy! I am completely packed! All I need to do in the morning is get dressed (in clothes I've laid out) put laptop in bag and leave :)
Oooh I had another stupid question Bassano... Can you put a small needle in handluggage? I mean like a sewing needle not like..... :P
Probably not
You want to sew?
so very much no :D
Good job!
I was just trying to decide what to do. Although I started that 2hrs ago and haven't done anything since.
Finish the Nascar bit of this calendar, I think...
I came to the library at 8ish to do some work, found myself an hour later looking at some books that are so completely unrelated to what i came in for....and then i sat down to do some writing....i did a sentance or two and am now on here..
Oops.

That could also work on the failed link
Try again
I have a scarred knuckle from Giggles' Window Blind Installation
Girl's got to occupy herself while her man's at work :P
do they not sell sewing needles in Dubai?
Best put it in your checked baggage then
He not taking any days off then?
Loving that this page has grown a lot since I last looked at it. Needs updating though. I want to know where you've been so we can compare notes!
Is cheaper to pay a man to darn your socks
Probably
and wait a second...you're going to Dubai!! DUBAI!! and you're going to sew?
Am dissapointed

Hehe shall do. Couldn't really be bothered opening the bag again :)

Also no. The answer to your other question is no. Most definitely not.
Evening all. Can someone have a look at what I've written for my personal statement so far and some help on what to put next? :)
They were in London this morning, filming, weren't they?
Or was that yesterday
I got lost on the Strand.... You think I'm trusted to go out by myself?
It didn't look like London to me :)
True story.
Nick can run for you again ;)

Just seen it on SSN. Will see if its on the internet

Don't you have a personal drop, they're all the rage these days
ok, one sec. It's only two paragraphs at the moment. :P
That's not what I was thinking of
Must've been a promo to launch the promo
OK, it's up.
I forgave him. He ran over a bridge then lied about it.
We worked out why I got lost btw.... I followed his directions but we went back down that route and someone had turned a signpost around so I went the wrong way then didn't like the look of the area I was wandering into so I went another way again!
Doh!
Hehe, I think Mother's forgotten that I have exam on Thursday. She's told me I can make up for the lost time tonight at the meeting tomorrow evening.
it's good, how many characters ?
295 words so far, 1301 characters.
eat your heart out James May
Is there anything you think I should change?
Better plan than the way I was going believe me!! I got shockingly close to where I was supposed to be going considering the route I took ;)
Scott, from a pedantic point of view, it should be CD-ROM
Changed ;)
So, I
Also, don't put 'and' after a comma
i would say put something about how you are motivated to do non-motorsport stuff too, or change some wording to say something like "this is my passion *points* but i like doing this and this and this too"
And that I want to integrate the two? Because that's what I want to do :P
Personally, on the last line I would just put 'express it' without 'release'
then yeah do that. just make sure its not too motorsport specific
2009 GP2 sporting regulations say "Any driver who previously won the GP2 Series Championship or any driver who completed a full season in
the FIA Formula One World Championship will not be permitted to participate in the Series." {Comment #226}
Now that you've given me the quote, I've been able to put it into a search engine, find out that I've been looking at the wrong document all along and agree with you. Thank you, Amy :)
I'd change the second mention of it to 'encyclopedia'.
In what way? Just so I understand what to put. :)
My friend Jack just posted this awesome looking cake for me on Facebook. I like!
Ha ha, quality!
umm, what you've done so far is good, it just needs to have something else about non-motorsport stuff in it too
That's awesome.
#needsmorebrawngpcake ;)
fair enough. i don't see how they clash though, the cars aren't on track at the same time. {Comment #227}
I believe the GP2 brigade do their Saturday race straight after the F1 qualifying, meaning the race clashes with the post-qualifying interview. F1 drivers are required to be available for it even if it is unrealistic or impossible for them to actually perform well enough to get in it. By the time a driver would know that they wouldn't be needed in the post-qualifying interview, there's a chance that they could have missed getting into the GP2 race. Which would be a problem.
There may also be a clash between the GP2 safety briefing and some F1 activity, depending on when it is done.
I like The Meat Cake

Oooh, the bottle of water looks lovely.
And on that weak attempt of a joke, my time on here today has come to an end. Farewell and lotsa love
G'night RG
I need it!
Hmm, I'm just trying to think. It doesn't help that all my main inspirations are car and motorsport related.
night
Don't admit to that... just yet
yeah, it's not easy. i dont really know what to suggest. put anything extra-curricular you have in? even your job before may help, it's helped to teach you about disapline or something. that kind of thig
Save it for the interview?
Save it for yourself! Make some rubbish up that could have inspired you. Try not to seem one dimensional.
his point is, dont seem like you've made your mind up and cant be convinced otherwise. they'll want someone who knows what they like, but is wiling to try all sorts of things and hasnt yet set their heart on doing something...whatever that may be
Gavin posted this on FB but it's worth sharing
More quality from The Oatmeal
http://theoatmeal.com/comics/printers
i would suggest that 'making some rubbish up' probably isnt the best idea
That's how Giggles got where he is today and... oh wait
So I could say "Despite this passion, I always have an open mind and always willing to look in other comes to ideas and inspirations" and then try going from there?
I could say that I like music and keeping fit and that I've taken a shine to the Rocky films?
*other areas and genres
Hmmm I've read many many many of these things and would suggest that people are more alike than we enjoy admitting! They're all full of banal rubbish. Why not make it banal rubbish that sounds better.... I'm not advocating actual lies. But no-one is ever going to know what inspired you etc etc etc.
yeah, try it.
onlyif you fully explain why and it sounds good :D
Making something dreary sound better i'd agree with, but actual lies isnt a clever idea. It dosent matter if they dont know about it.
especially on the off chance that the person who 'inspired' you is your interviewers best subject
I wouldn't say this! Particularly the bit about Rocky(!)
I also wouldn't spell out the open minded bit. You just need to show through your statement that you've thought about other things/done other jobs and used this to shape your future interests and ambitions.
Lol we're obviously not talking about the same kind of "lie"
Wait, Jon says I should try this and you say I shouldn't?
I know it's my decision in the end, but - confused?
I'm gonna go with Alison for this.
Er....
Why am I here if I have to be up at 7am for work tomorrow morning?
Somebody tell me I need to go to bed. That'll make me feel better!
I think you need a short paragraph in a statement about your outside interests that isn't to do with anything. I'm simply suggesting that Rocky seems like an odd interest?
Go to bed!
Go to bed, which is what I should do as I have to be up at 5am
This should also make you feel better
It makes me feel much better knowing I'm not alone in the early starts. :D
7am is not an early start
My first meeting started at 7am :)
I have an early start as well. However, seeing as I'm getting up to fly off to a warm exotic place maybe I shouldn't complain ;)
Lucky.
My parents are flying off to a cold arctic place. Complain!
Happy holidays Alison
Don't sew too much & give Nick a punch for me :)
I most certainly shall do :D
Well my interests are mainly music, keeping fit/gym/running/, computers, creative writing/blogging, socialising and photoshop. Off the top of my head, anyway.
Add reading on to that one as well.
You could write a good paragraph about many of those things. If I were you, I'd choose a couple and write properly about them. A couple sentences about each, don't ramble. Try to choose something not directly related to course or academic achievement but that an admissions tutor is likely to regard as a "sensible pursuit" or whatever :)
So shall we say keeping fit and creative writing? or is blogging too close to the subject?
Creative writing would be better to be put in personally.
Of course, I'm just wondering whether it's too closely related to something like film and video i.e script writing.
Exercise is good if you stress the commitment involved and possibly are you working towards a clear goal? Training for something in particular? You want to try to demonstrate that you actually like these things and aren't just listing stuff. Creative writing is also a really good one yeah.
On the creative writing front, should I mention that I have a couple of blogs? Or should I just leave them out and explain why I enjoy it?
Have a go at explaining why you like it yeah. If it's what you enjoy, go for it!
The blogging that is. Doh!
OK, that's the interests paragraph done. I was thinking about doing one about what I did academically regarding this genre, mainly my GCSE English Media and AS Art.
Yeah definitely!
Oh dear, my willingness to have a hair makeover is giving people the wrong impression.
I've not read your statement but I'd say a sensible basic structure would be:
Intro including roughly why you like the subject and what interests you in it in particular
What suits you to the subject/university. Why should they pick you
Academic stuff. Any experience of similar study.
Interesting things
Conclusion - briefly summarise what you've written (probably missing out things in the interests paragraph) summing up quickly in a couple of sentences why you want to study this subject and why you're suited to it. Don't directly repeat anything you've already written but also don't introduce any big new points.
Thanks Alison. My first two paragraphs of my statement are up in a word document on drop.io if you want to have a look :)
Okay I shall do. I used to work with Aim Higher at uni mentoring downtrodden 6th formers about raising aspirations or some other rubbish like that. I did get paid to read a lot of these things. They're quite soul destroying!
I now bid you lot good night, and safe journeys tomorrow wherever you're headed. Pleasant dreams for those intending to sleep! :D
Morning all. I think I have found an acceptable cheap camera. Going to investigate at lunch time :D
Morning!
As you understand the awesomeness of getting new glasses, can you tell my opticians to hurry up? Also, it's snowingly badly and I worry my wait for my new glasses may increase :(
night
Morning. And it past midnight so it is morning technically...
Aw, waiting sucks! I had to wait 7 days.
That's insane! 2 days is the mximum usually for my optician.
Too tired to read sensibly Scott. Try to remind me some other time :)
I'm going to listen to an inane podcast and hope it sends me off to peaceful slumber.
Have a fun holiday :-)
Right, I've got something here which is under 4000 characters. I'll post it on the drop for you to have a look at :)
Shall do :)
We'll try not to kill each other ;)
Ok, here's the initial finished one:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/personal-statement-doc-2
This is outside my area of expertise but on the face of it looks good! Perhaps a tad long, I was always told to keep it to 2 or 3 paras, but that was below uni level
