How can it possibly be Monday again? Not only is it Monday, but it is a double driver birthday, with both Nakajima and Sutil celebrating the anniversary of their births. Kazuki turned 25, whilst Sutil hits 27 - hurtling towards 30, but don't tell him that! Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Apparently, the organisers at Bahrain are hoping they might regain some of the F1 testing that they have lost to Europe. They appear to be hoping for bad weather conditions in Spain to give them a shot at hosting the teams as they evaluate their new cars. Have they forgotten the last test session they hosted though? Talk about bad weather!
  • Over on VivaF1, Maverick has a post about what he's expecting from the cars this year, in terms of aerodynamics and sneaky diffuser designs. It's an interesting post, but all I can think is the cars can't possibly be as ugly as they were this year... can they?
  • The official F1 site are running a multi-part series of posts, reviewing the season through the news that was breaking during each month. They've just posted July to September, which was a particularly difficult time of the season for pretty much everyone, I reckon. Still, it's a good way to review the season, with one more part still to come.

That's all for now, let us know how your Monday goes, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

    Hey everyone.

Watching one heck of a game between Arizona and Green Bay in the NFL playoffs while I am cooking up a batch Imperial Stout. So far so good.

I think we need to add Mr. Ashley Judd to the potential drivers list. With John Anderson at USF1, it is a distinct possibility. John Anderson has worked closely with Dario the last few years. He was his team manager when he won his 2007 championship. He was his team manager when he drove last year in the ALMS series. Even with Dario having a contract with Chip Ganassi next year, it is a possibility. From an American open wheel racing scene perspective, it makes sense to a degree.

Now that, sounds like a good idea

Would he want to come in at that level, he's had quite a bit of success in the states?

Point of clarification. Dario wasn't in ALMS this year, I got him confused with his brother. Still there is a successful relationship there.

looks ok, maybe a little bit too wide (it's not centred by a few pixels)

regarding the colour: maybe if you change the colour on your google calendar page, that will reflect on the embeded one (just theorizing here...)

  • Pat W11/01/2010 at 01:51

I can't see how to do that on the original. This is only a temporary solution anyway. I'm going to make a Wordpress blog and this'll be full size on a different page, maybe a small version on the front as well, we'll see.

how much is the difference between like 4x and 5x zoom? It seems every single camera in my budget ($200ish) is 3x or 4x but i can get 5x for another $20 or 6x for $65 but i have no idea if its worth it.

it depends on the size of the zoom. the 'x4' only says that you have a factor of 4 between the wide angle and the long side of the zoom. but if it starts at 16mm is not the same than if it starts at 28mm

for some good close ups you should have at least 300mm in the long end of the zoom. more is better, though (all these sizes are for a full frame camera, or the 'equivalent' in a small camera)

one way to avoid this is getting as many megapixels as you can, and crop the picture afterwards. sadly big sensors are also expensive... :-(

And the light? It gets louder...

USF1 news: US F1 appoints team manager

John Anderson (no relation to Ken, I presume), who is now USF1's team manager, previously filled the same position at Gil De Ferran's ALMS team. The article says he's also an Aussie.

It looks like the guy has experience. Let's see what he can do at USF1.

  • Journeyer11/01/2010 at 08:04

Meanwhile, in the 2010 rumor mill: First glimpse of the F2010?

It's a Czech article, but I'm more interested in the diagram. The words "Red Bull" are used a lot, though...

Also, I'm intrigued by the (initial) positioning of the Santander decals. So far, they're only on the front wing, as well as the rear wing endplates. They might be on the sidepods (further to the rear of the car than the traditional Shell decals), but we're not sure because the figure is cut out. But the barcode still seems to be on the engine cover and rear wing.

Morning everyone. Hope all is well... More exciting news on my crazy ideas slipping into reality. My mate has made a real version of the distance to hot idea from last week for my travel site. And there are even more ideas up there now: http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2010/01/where-can-i-go-from-here.html

Perhaps I can develop an entire website by casually mentioning things on my blog?

Dont you mean the "to hate one"?

  • Journeyer11/01/2010 at 08:09

Oh, and this one may be of interest to you all: Lewis and THAT WOMAN split - and it's for real this time

  • Journeyer11/01/2010 at 08:10

As a Ferrari fan, no. ;)

Kinda like SPC, then? ;) To a certain extent, anyway. :D

You do? Do tell more. :D

  • Turkey Machine11/01/2010 at 08:16

hey guys and gals, how be we this stupid morning?

  • Alex Andronov11/01/2010 at 08:16

You do? Do tell more. :D

A guy at work bet me £20 that Kimi would score more points than Alonso this year, and as a side bet he also bet me £5 that Lewis and THAT WOMAN would split before the year was out. Now I can't remember if it's the F1 season or was 2009. So I may be okay.

He has already paid out on the Kimi thing and gone again with £20 that Jenson will score more points than Alonso. He just really doesn't like Alonso I guess.

  • Journeyer11/01/2010 at 08:18

I must admit it is difficult but I do enjoy it and it makes me feel good for it. I have asked my wife if she wants me to be her gym buddy on Wednesdays (as I have stopped Danish lessons now so I finish an hour earlier). Somehow I have to play Wii a bit more too. I'm really serious about this!

    How are we all today?

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 10:05

Christine and other Dr Who maniacs, this may interest you - from Stephen Moffat himself

“It’s Series Thirty-One of Doctor Who, and it’s Series One of Matt Smith’s Doctor, Those are both real numbers. I submit that ‘Series Five of Doctor Who’ means absolutely nothing unless you really believe that Matt Smith is the third Doctor. Everyone knows he’s the Eleventh Doctor so that means it’s definitely not ‘Series Five’. Whichever number you choose, ‘Series Five’ is the one that’s flawed.” “‘Series One’ is an exciting sentence. ‘Series Thirty-One’ is an awe-inspiring sentence. ‘Series Five’ is a boring sentence - and also a complete lie”

    So... it's Season 31 now?

  • Christine11/01/2010 at 10:07

    So... it's Season 31 now?

I would definitely prefer that to Series 1.

All this timey wimey business, i reckon.

You can't cross the streams. The thing is at least he's acknowledging that Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor not the 1st Doctor. That's the main thing.

What I really want to know is who directed and who wrote the lines for Matt Smith at the end of the end of time? I mean he still sounded quite Tennant-esque there. But... I mean it's the first couple of lines of a new character quite important for a writer. And it would be strange if Moffat didn't get to at least approve them.

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 10:20

Moffat was definitely there on the introduction to Smith's doctor, as seen on Dr Who confidential, so he definitely had input

Personally, I regard the 2009 specials as an extension of the 2008 Series/Season 30/Series 4, New Version/Season 3, Tenth Doctor. It's a bit like having five Christmas specials (counting the Dreamland online episode) after the normal Christmas special.

Nicole singing Don'tcha wish your girlfriend was hot like me to Jenson in front of Jessica was going to be a pivotal moment

perhaps his next girlfriend should be Jessica Michibata. That could really make an interesting atmosphere :D Or even any of Lensoos numourous exes.

    right, probably.

I don't think Nicole Richie is equally ditzy. She's up there, but not as bad. Plus, her dad is Lionel, and that can only be cool.

  • me11/01/2010 at 11:56

i've found something good about twitter.

sorry, i should have made sure you were sitting down first. sit down...

    ...

okay, i've found something good about twitter.

i've started "favouriting" tweets, so i can remember those i may wish to return to. and the following urls are supported if you want to see my favourites:

    http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/favorites

    http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/favourites

twitter supports the UK spelling of favourite! i'm assuming it's deliberate, rather than coincidence. technically the text is still spelt wrong on the page though.

  • Alex Andronov11/01/2010 at 12:04

    hello?

    Truly.

Lionel Ritchie is responsible for 2 of my favourite music video moments of all time. I love the moment when he says hello, is it me you're looking for to a blind girl on the phone, but after he says hello he has to dance so he kind of leaves the phone behind while he says "is it me you're looking for". It makes me laugh uncontrollably every time. As does the time when he dances with the police officer.

That's the one with the police officer right? I think it might be. The police officer arrives when they are all dancing and they stop thinking he's going to tell them off, but then the police officer starts dancing too. The look on his face seems to say to me every time, "cut the video mr director because I'm about to burst out laughing".

Yup. The whole stage is actually a giant wheel, but because we view it from a fixed camera perspective it looks like he is walking up the walls and ceiling!

It was the way they did the walking in a wheel in 2001 (the film that caused one of the most confusing moments of Sidepodcast live shows ever). As I'd seen how they did that it gave me the clue.

  • The Boston Red Scott11/01/2010 at 12:51

I like how some companies forget to invoice you for 3 months, and then insist on payment within 14 days.

If you live in Italy, you need to get used to that. Except replace 3 months with 6 months. You can get bills (for 3 months periods) a week apart. Same due date. I love living in the USA compared to Italy. Much Better Organised. except I should spell Organised as Organized.

jenson has been the face of their campaign for the past 2 years. this kinda rebranding probably too 12 months of planning. there's no chance jenson will be squeezed in, even for a cameo.

Lewis is the face of Abbey/Santander in the UK and has been for nearly three years now. So continuity innit?

On another note, they've been one of the big success stories in F1 in recent years (along with ING Direct) whose brand awareness has shot sky high since 2007.

  • Maverick11/01/2010 at 12:55

lewis is in breach of all kinda health and safety laws without a hardhat in that environment. don't tell gavin.

    1) Distinct lack of PPE on all workers, including Lewis:

    a) Lewis has no hi-vis vest, boots or hard hat

    b) No gloves, safety goggles or ear protection on anyone

    2) Inadequate signage in the working area

    3) at one point workers walked under a lifted heavy object. No way would you do that!

    4) No road signage warning of possible road works ahead - or to reduce speed etc.

    5) Workers not tethered properly to a high structure (the bridge at the end)

    6) Workers using improper lifting equipment and techniques.

Ironic that the analogy the bank uses is full of risks and pitfalls ;)

I suppose you can't say, "fill 'er up".

When I lived in America I was very young and I always dreamed of the day when I would be able to say, "fill 'er up with Super Unleaded". It was the coolest phrase ever. But now most places in the states are self-serve so I will probably never be able to do it. By the time I get around to it we will almost certainly be onto flying cars and I'll have to say, "Computer, re-energize the fuel crystals" or something.

  • The Boston Red Scott11/01/2010 at 13:06

You need to see Giggles' video :-)

which one? I'm hopelessly behind on F1 and non-F1 stuff.

You could try saying it to Katherine? (just for the record, this is not a recommendation)

    4) No road signage warning of possible road works ahead - or to reduce speed etc.

I always like the "Heavy plant crossing" sign. It's one of my personal favs.

  • The Boston Red Scott11/01/2010 at 13:07

    2) Inadequate signage in the working area

you don't think "zero" was the speed limit? I think that was appropriate for a lego bridge.

  • Maverick11/01/2010 at 13:07

It always disappoints me, never seen a tree crossing the road yet

    2) Inadequate signage in the working area

you don't think "zero" was the speed limit? I think that was appropriate for a lego bridge.

    7) Signage was not adequately clear - sign saying "zero" possibly implying a speed limit, but not asking the driver to stop?

  • Maverick11/01/2010 at 13:11

    1) Distinct lack of PPE on all workers, including Lewis:

    a) Lewis has no hi-vis vest, boots or hard hat

    b) No gloves, safety goggles or ear protection on anyone

    2) Inadequate signage in the working area

    3) at one point workers walked under a lifted heavy object. No way would you do that!

    4) No road signage warning of possible road works ahead - or to reduce speed etc.

    5) Workers not tethered properly to a high structure (the bridge at the end)

    6) Workers using improper lifting equipment and techniques

I don't think these rules apply in CGI

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/01/2010 at 13:11

I agree completely but if we start looking for PPE in advertisements, we'd to give up on living a quality life. At least Bob The Builder sets a good example. I think you're right Gavin about the banks using something with dangers and pitfalls, but since when does anyone think lego is a good thing to drive on?

Back to work for me (need to close window) and write that report due in 139 minutes (tick tick tick)

I've had a few assignments like that to be honest but if that's what the lecturer thinks then so be it ;)

That C++ one I got a B in came as a huuuuuge surprise for example. You certainly don't need me to tell you my struggles and experiences of it yet it came out very positive and I did more apparently than I even I thought I did...

  • James11/01/2010 at 14:39

The problem is, if the grading is subjective (like an essay), they could easily say "sure, I'll regrade it, but might go DOWN as well.

Maybe I should just go with the grade. I don't feel it reflects my work I'm putting very little effort into my work. :D

  • James11/01/2010 at 14:42

The problem is, if the grading is subjective (like an essay), they could easily say "sure, I'll regrade it, but might go DOWN as well.

Its a programming assignment. but I could still be marked down so thats why I'm not sure about asking.

The mysteries of lecturer marking. They should never mark just below 70% anyway, they should be clear that it is worth 70% or not - 69% just leaves room for argument.

Hello, a complete fan of the podcasts and an occasional commenter here...just got back from a holiday in Hawaii (somebody has to do it)...and came across a license plate that I just had to take a picture of. Little did you know there is a Frenchman living in Hawaii that is a complete fan of sidepodcast. I've dropped the photo in drop.io, but completely used up all my old person technology skills to get it there so am unable to post a link here. I laughed every time I came across it while sorting through pictures...and my daughter keeps reminding me that it's only funny to me...but I hope sidepodcast people will get as much of a giggle as I did from it.

I never panic before an exam. But I am panicking about my English which I'm getting on Friday.

Cor, blimey, that'll mean it's a year on Friday since I got mine then! Time flies. Doesn't seem so long since that set of exams, way back in November 08. Hope you've done well!

    Thanks Tom and Lara

Oh, erm, does anyone consider James May a hero? I've got a birthday party to on Saturday night (it's her 18th tomorrow) and it has a fancy dress theme of 'Heroes and Villains'. I have no idea what to do. At least with Mr May, I'm almost there.

  • Saira11/01/2010 at 19:00

I have an exam next week and am already stressing over it :(

Oh you'll be fine, is it the anatomy and physiology one? It's not too bad from what I remember! You only need to pass it anyway, so it'll be no problem :)

I got mostly As at GCSE and didn't revise whatsoever. Luckily, the Uni course I'm looking is not a skill I need to revise either! It's something I've done for many years!

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 21:06

    You're doing a procrastiantion course?

  • Tom G11/01/2010 at 21:06

    You're doing a procrastiantion course?

No, I'm looking into the course Jon said about, a degree in Air Transport, with a PPL and CPL as bonus.

  • Alison11/01/2010 at 21:07

Errrr really? Even if it's not revision, there'll be a lot of work you have to physically get done. Tedious, time consuming work....

Yeah but in retrospect GCSEs are easy.... What course are you goona do that doesn't involve revision?!?!

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 21:08

Errrr really? Even if it's not revision, there'll be a lot of work you have to physically get done. Tedious, time consuming work....

Agreed, Uni is a step up from A levels. And I'm at a rubbish mickey mouse uni and the work is still mind numbing.

  • Tom G11/01/2010 at 21:08

Yeah but in retrospect GCSEs are easy.... What course are you goona do that doesn't involve revision?!?!

Erm, it's a degree in Air Transport, or something similar. But the majority of the course is gaining two Pilot's licences.

  • Pat W11/01/2010 at 21:08

Cannot wait for ASI this year. Front row seats for the Live Action show, catching up with the CTL guys at their stand, meeting up with some of you guys, Jenson being there and a 205 T16 and Metro 6R4 on the rally stand. AND karting afterwards. Awesome! :D

I'm meeting up with Jackie and the PF Viva crew on Saturday. Should be fun!

  • Scott Woodwiss11/01/2010 at 21:09

There will be a fair element of academic content if they're awarding a degree. No matter how they jazz it up in the prospectus #sorrytom

That's certainly where I fell down, I hardly worked at all for A levels and got As quite easily, but that didn't quite work out at Uni, you really need to work whatever

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 21:11

Not necessarily. You'll have to do work (clearly) but if its anything like mine then you'll be fine. I find mine quite easy, but some of my coursemates find it hard...so it depends what your strenghts are as to how easy you find it

  • Pat W11/01/2010 at 21:11

I'm going on Saturday as well! Mind if we meet up with you guys too?

We're doing the 11am live show (assuming I can get up and be there on time), then apparently lunch, and a wander around. If that fits in with you then I'm sure it'll be fine. You may want to check here.

No, we need someone to fill the void of blame and annoyances without that woman there.

  • Jon Waldock11/01/2010 at 21:12

Ironically i've just walking into my kitchen where about 7 international students are talking about how much they pay for tuition fees each year, the number was £8,000. I didnt dare tell them that i only pay £3,225 :D

I think that's how I'd be with the course I want. Aviation is my passion, more than anything else. To just have the opportunity to learn to fly would be my motivation.

everyone i've talked too loves it. let me know if you want to chat to someone about it, or if you want to come and have a look

I may do soon. I sort of have to choose at the moment whether or not I could afford to do it. My original plan was to go straight into the RAF, and get a degree once I'm on the job, which they'd pay for, but that course looks more enjoyable for me, I don't enjoy being shouted at. Now, I'm not so sure on the RAF, but it'd be the only way I could possibly do it and avoid a mountain of debt!

    hehe maybe. i just worry that she's put down the wrong grade is all. {Comment #340}

I had that happen to me once on a piece of university coursework.

Tip: don't try to get it changed - even if it's blatantly obvious on the paperwork that the grade is wrong, the error is in your favour and there isn't enough change to actually affect department funding, the staff will fight tooth and nail not to sort it out because of the extra effort they have to go to in order to correct the system.

For future students - to get used to

I remember that vividly. The one time it came in use all the students in the halls of residence were panicking blindly at the fire in the 3rd floor. The only calm one (heavily influenced by half a bottle of Jura Single Malt) was me, so I rang the fire department, twice, to get them here sharpish and sort it out. Warden was absolutely clueless and only just opened the gates in time.

Problem fire was traced to somebody microwaving a trainer at 4am. £2000 for a refit of the kitchen, and needless to say the flat weren't getting their deposits back.

  • Tom G11/01/2010 at 21:34

Right, now I need to find out how to do my hair.

Right, got it. I shall make a note of that! :D I got wobbly once last year, but I decided it wasn't all that fun, plus I don't particularly enjoy the taste.

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:47

Implying it was a flippant remark?

    of course.

when wasn't it a flippant remark. except it isn't is it? he hates number #2 more than #22.

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:48

I dunno, but my point is that he does seem to be scrutinised more than the others with what he says. Yeah OK, he says stupid stuff but I can't see the problem with this one.

it's something about him that annoys me intensely. and i bet he'd go on about it all season, and it's his first interview.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/01/2010 at 21:48

Implying it was a flippant remark?

    of course.

when wasn't it a flippant remark. except it isn't is it? he hates number #2 more than #22.

And so he should - along with any other F1 driver worth their salt. Else they are the Ralf Schumachers of this world...

  • Turkey Machine11/01/2010 at 21:48

Oh yeah, my old place of employment was up café street who used to have a very good day if there was a fire alarm because 800 people would go and get a coffee instead of waiting...

Wonderful stuff. Did ya suspect the owner set it off occasionally to drum up business?

  • Alison11/01/2010 at 21:48

when wasn't it a flippant remark. except it isn't is it? he hates number #2 more than #22.

Surely he doesn't believe Jenson's better than him though? He must be messing about.....

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/01/2010 at 21:49

I doubt it, I worked for the government ;)

  • Turkey Machine11/01/2010 at 21:49

    ROFL, good times! :D

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:50

Surely he doesn't believe Jenson's better than him though? He must be messing about.....

    yes and no.

it seems to be some kind of switch in his head that says "i deserve number one". i honestly believe it eats at him a little. he cannot leave the phrase alone. it's like his "for sure" moment.

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 21:50

Surely he doesn't believe Jenson's better than him though? He must be messing about.....

He is playing mindgames with Jenson - doubt if it will have the same effect it had on Fernando.

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:50

He is playing mindgames with Jenson - doubt if it will have the same effect it had on Fernando.

    maybe.

i wish i'd put money on him saying. although the odds would've been poor.

  • Turkey Machine11/01/2010 at 21:51

when wasn't it a flippant remark. except it isn't is it? he hates number #2 more than #22.

    #22 is better than #23, but #23's closer to #27. ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/01/2010 at 21:51

it seems to be some kind of switch in his head that says "i deserve number one". i honestly believe it eats at him a little. he cannot leave the phrase alone. it's like his "for sure" moment.

And that is exactly why I like the guy.

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:52

And that is exactly why I like the guy.

i guess so. i think maybe i shoulda got him a new book of stock phrases for christmas.

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 21:53

And that is exactly why I like the guy.

It is probably why I do not like him! Just get on and drive the car - I have no time for this playing around - they are team mates not boxing opponents.

  • Alison11/01/2010 at 21:53

You wouldn't have put money on him being #2 driver at McLaren anytime soon though would you. I think it's just as much of a shock to him. Even if it is just a number.

  • Pat W11/01/2010 at 21:53

It is probably why I do not like him! Just get on and drive the car - I have no time for this playing around - they are team mates not boxing opponents.

Yeah, quite frankly, I think it's just a number, not status. Jenson only gets #1 on his car as he's WDC.

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:54

You wouldn't have put money on him being #2 driver at McLaren anytime soon though would you. I think it's just as much of a shock to him. Even if it is just a number.

that's a good point. this is a mental interview:

"Every year I seem to have more and more input into the car. Last year actually I didn't have much input into it, thank goodness"

    wtf??

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/01/2010 at 21:54

And that is exactly why I like the guy.

i guess so. i think maybe i shoulda got him a new book of stock phrases for christmas.

At the end of the day, he's just gonna get battered everytime he opens his mouth anyway so he may as well go for stock phrases ;)

  • Pat W11/01/2010 at 21:54

i guess so. i think maybe i shoulda got him a new book of stock phrases for christmas.

I have a theory that he uses them as motivational tools for himself as much as anything, perhaps more so than using them as mind games against his teammate / opponent. Like he's still trying to convince himself.

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 21:55

Not a Prost vs. Senna Fan at all then?

No - because I like strategy and team play. I was more of a Prost fan than a Senna one.

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 21:55

"Every year I seem to have more and more input into the car. Last year actually I didn't have much input into it, thank goodness"

    ...heikki fixed Mclaren?

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 21:56

I did not completely forgive when he was telling everyone how much better he was than Kimi - that he could feel the grip more than his opponents.

  • me11/01/2010 at 21:58

Oh absolutely. These days I have a mark from all the facepalming I do when hearing about Lewis!

please read that interview and help me out here.

he has more input each year... or he doesn't? i really have no idea what he's trying to say, unless he means:

"every time the car got faster it were me that did it. and when it got slower it was someone else's fault"

    that's what i'm seeing.

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 21:59

You mean like Mr. 6-tenth's who made similar claims?

I plead the Ricky Bobby Mantra here: Lewis Hamilton is not a thinker, Lewis Hamilton is a driver! :D

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 22:00

either that or selective use of the ear plugs when Lewis opens his mouth.

  • Alison11/01/2010 at 22:03

He does talk a lot of rubbish, is badly managed and is stifled by his dad/McLaren into not being his own man. But I feel that most drivers are dull and stifled or just talk rubbish anyway. Sure there are nice ones, but most are not allowed to be as personable as before lest they upset a sponsor or something!

  • Pat W11/01/2010 at 22:04

It is interesting isn't it. When it was announced I thought Lewis was going to kill Jenson this year. Now I'm not so sure. Lewis seems scared and Jenson seems mega-confident.

I do! Jenson's gotta prove he's quicker than him in the first test though, otherwise Hammy'll have the legs on him the first few races. Takes a while for the new guy to bed into a new car.

  • Lukeh11/01/2010 at 22:05

I missed out on all the media coverage and all of 2007's ITV shenanigans. What I did see was quite laughably bad. I get the impression part of Lewis' problem is media saturation - he is oft-quoted and it's like they have to find something to quote, but it's usually rubbish because of this...

Actually you make a good point - he was supposed to have paid his dues by developing a winner and now he says he didn't?

He could have been talking about the pre-season. The interview does say this:

"Through the year obviously I had a lot of input into it and it got better and better, but with this one I was at the factory quite a lot, really trying to give as much input into it as possible."

  • me11/01/2010 at 22:19

  • Turkey Machine11/01/2010 at 22:22

Not hard to do, Woking's a rather dire place now McLaren have permanently put up shop! :D

Awwww I'm sorry Lou. I am happy for him to have done well.

one day LewHam will learn to be more careful about what he says in interviews.

    2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.

i'm thinking he probably won't learn.

    :D

I can't wait for what he says next year.

  • me11/01/2010 at 22:24

I can't wait for what he says next year.

what's really annoying is i want to support him, and will him to beat schumi. but i'd be happy to see lewis come second after that interview.

  • Alison11/01/2010 at 22:24

You want motivation? to pack? to go and see Nick?

Booooo you're mean! I guess I have to now or he's gonna get angry in the morning!

  • me11/01/2010 at 22:26

He won't. I really do wonder why he doesn't either...

i can only assume he really does believe what he says.

that he really thinks him being in the factory makes all that difference. it wasn't the umpteen all nighters that the aero guys put in last summer. it was him taking a keen interest.

i trully believe that is what he thinks.

I have no idea. I really don't. I just know that for Alonso to get so battered from all sides about his time there and his only retort was "...I have no problem with Lewis, just the team wasn't behind me..." (or similar)

Seems pretty mild for a guy blamed on a lot of stuff and getting fired that year?

  • Alex Andronov11/01/2010 at 22:35

Have just had a look at that interview... Couldn't he have just said this bit that he said, and left it there?

"I've got the world champion sitting next to me as my team mate. Felipe Massa's back, Fernando (Alonso)'s at Ferrari. Really I would say the best drivers are in the best teams and so the competition this year should be the most exciting I think."

I think it does make something of a difference though. If he's at the factory he can practice on the simulator, work with the engineers on setups and preferences, like making the steering wheel controls intuitive so he doesn't accidentally engage pit limiter...

i don't believe lewis made the difference between the car that started the year and the car that ended it.

also, you have to ask. if he is that good... what the hell was he doing last christmas?

  • Rich11/01/2010 at 22:37

I don';t think he was kicked out.

There was no apparent opening as they intended to keep Jenson if he came cheap enough and they had Nico.

Actually I am very angry with Brawn/Mercedes their attitude to both driver was extremely disappointing. I am really hoping the Michael will fail miserably - sorry I do not like the guy and I now do not like the team or Ross.

No way. That would require a racing driver to be a thinker and therefore violate the Ricky Bobby principle. Therefore they cannot be a driver!

it's been a lifelong ambition to drive for Williams because of Senna, and he was always going to get a drive in 2010 with the year he had, he and Williams were discussing a deal back in June so I can't see how they kicked him out, he was obviously willing to go as the opportunity arose and Brawn was happy to take Rosberg

I think Rosberg has been on the horizon for a long time. Rubens put a brave face on it. It is huge for Williams though and other Nico - could not have a better team mate to have as a mentor.

    Hey guys, on the move again. What's up? {Comment #400}

I went to college for the first time since Christmas! Half the class didn't turn up and we ended up studying kidneys, the endocrine system and diabetes.

  • Alex Andronov11/01/2010 at 22:42

also, you have to ask. if he is that good... what the hell was he doing last christmas?

That's the main thing. Why didn't he have anything to do with it? Of course he may have been distracted having won, and this year he is concentrating on everything. And it may be true that that concentration helps. I bet it does as it goes. I mean Lewis won't be suggesting variations to programs to run on the CFD machine... But he could be standing there saying, "hey have you come up with the new variations to the CFD machine". And the guys will all laugh, and then they'll go home and think, "he seems serious this year, you know".

It was a stupid interview though. Reminded me of Joey on Days of our lives. Expect Lewis to walk into an elevator shaft. (Note: Joey claimed that he wrote most of his lines in Days of our lives because sometimes he changed which words he said)

    I've never done revision. Passed all my GCSEs with flying colours. I think I'll be alright with a small amount, just to finish one little bit for this test. {Comment #412}

The only revision technique that has ever worked for me is to learn it properly the first time and re-read shortly before the exam. Preferably the original books or my original notes - re-doing them (which is what most other methods I've seen amount to) makes me forget stuff.

Ironically i've just walking into my kitchen where about 7 international students are talking about how much they pay for tuition fees each year, the number was £8,000. I didnt dare tell them that i only pay £3,225 :D

    #sorryinternationallypeople {Comment #558}

It was worse in my day. I was in the penultimate intake before top-up fees and qualified to have a lot of my tuition fees paid for me, so when I told my (Singaporean) best friend on the course I personaly was only paying £58 for my first year of university tuition she was astonished. It was costing her about £7000 for the same course...

I shall go dig it out! I think it may have started because of your tweet rumour.

  • Alianora La Canta11/01/2010 at 23:03

I remember that vividly. The one time it came in use all the students in the halls of residence were panicking blindly at the fire in the 3rd floor. The only calm one (heavily influenced by half a bottle of Jura Single Malt) was me, so I rang the fire department, twice, to get them here sharpish and sort it out. Warden was absolutely clueless and only just opened the gates in time.

    Problem fire was traced to somebody microwaving a trainer at 4am. {Comment #593}

I knew some students were silly but that takes the biscuit (um... ...trainer). Ladies and gentlemen, better ways of drying footwear exist!

The only times I heard the fire alarm at university were when I was in a building during the weekly fire alarm test. I hated it...

I read the following comments and guessed so, serves me right for not reading the comments at the time :)

  • Alison11/01/2010 at 23:04

    Sounds good!

It would do except that it was the tidying up that made me lose my will to live in the first place.... It serves me right for not unpacking any of my stuff since I moved house months ago I guess :P

I can see this being a long and painful year for Jenson :(

  • Turkey Machine11/01/2010 at 23:08

Note that that gives a reasonable insight at 11pm into the online racing I do. The long and short of it is: it's fun!

    F1 Minute Ping: http://www.f1m...ht-line-testing-days/ {Comment #779}

Grrrrr! The other new teams aren't getting extra straight-line testing days, so USF1 shouldn't either. This is two-tier F1 via the back door :(

  • Tom G11/01/2010 at 23:21

Clearly, my reputation as Mr Injury is speading...

yeah, can someone explain to me why they're getting extra days?

Or spreading. One of the two.

  • Alianora La Canta11/01/2010 at 23:24

Blimey Alianora, I wasn't expecting you to quote something from when I was on a train 4.5 hours ago!!!

    Good on ya for attending though, you get extra brownie points with the lecturers if you do that. {Comment #794}

Well, I try to read all the comments at some stage, even if they're done the day before (which explains why quite a few Daily entries end with a comment from me). I thought you might like me to answer the question, so I did ;)

I don't like the idea of missing class unless I'm ordered to do so - not doing classes last week because college was shut annoyed me quite a lot - and besides, there was supposed to be a respiratory system test and starting studies of digestive system terminology. It didn't happen due to the few people who'd turned up and assumed lack of revision on account of Christmas!

The only theory I can come up with is that the FIA is primarily about increasing power for the FIA...

  • Jon Waldock11/01/2010 at 23:38

  • Jon Waldock11/01/2010 at 23:51

just....wanted to know what people thought it meant. it's not for anything. just what to know what you think it means!
