Saturday at last, and we have had a week filled with testing, Honda rumours, Danica speculation, and talk of Bernie getting involved with as many deals as possible. Meanwhile, we continue to talk and discuss:

  • ING have apparently said they will continue to sponsor the Turkish Grand Prix, even though they previously said they'd be pulling out of F1 altogether at the end of this year. What's with the sudden about turn? Shouldn't they have decided this before the announcement?
  • There is speculation that the Honda team may show up at Silverstone for some straight line testing next week. There is also talk that the transporters were spotted near Dover, and things are kicking off at the factory. Take all the above with vast pinches of salt.
  • The latest Sidepodcast Diary is up and about. Number 16 takes a look at some of the video we shot at the Porsche Centre, including a small boy attempting the Batak Wall, and a mishapen ball being thrown at me. What more could you want? Go take a look and enjoy.
  • Also, just a quick mention that this is the 100th Daily post. Yay! I honestly can't quite remember how we managed without daily posts, so here's to the next 100.

I'm sure there will be more news later in the day, so if you spot anything, be sure to share it with us. Feel free to veer on and off topic, though, that's what the daily posts are for! I'll see you in the comments.

    Happy Birthday Daily.

Gotta admit, the kid attempting the batak wall was cute, not that I coulda fared much better with height issues.

presumably old news that only just got written up?

    Very

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 00:44

Is it Mercedes have set them a deadline for Monday?

Going by what I read earlier Honda were talking about deadlines but I think that is just to push Branson into moving faster.

  • RG21/02/2009 at 00:45

    Ahem…

“My mouth is soo staying closed”?

I took a drink, it slipped in after.

But aye, 'forum speak', Honda buyout deadline is Monday as thats when engine deal for Mercedes is required

  • RG21/02/2009 at 00:46

    deal should read payment

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 00:46

presumably old news that only just got written up?

If they don't have a budget to test the new car they don't have the budget to give joyrides to journalists.

  • lou21/02/2009 at 00:46

presumably old news that only just got written up?

yeah that's pretty old. Done last year i believe. i think there is a video on youtube of it...

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 00:48

But aye, ‘forum speak’, Honda buyout deadline is Monday as thats when engine deal for Mercedes is required

There is no reason for Mercedes to impose a deadline. All they have to do is ship a few engines to ex-Honda and they no doubt have plenty engines available.

  • me21/02/2009 at 00:48

yeah that’s pretty old. Done last year i believe. i think there is a video on youtube of it…

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 01:40

Love the cricket and baseball, and I see what you mean about tennis

The cricket was the first one they did and much as I hate the real game their version is addictive. The baseball is too. Football not so much but I think the tennis is going to keep me occupied for a while until I win at the top level.

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 01:41

Q: what is the best driving game?

For me it's gotta be Gran Turismo

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 01:41

oooh you have to press ‘a’ to hit the ball….must.read.instructions.

The trick to doing well is to use the arrow keys to aim your shots. So when you press a press the left or right arrow as well but don't press the arrow first or you just run away from the ball.

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 01:42

Q: what is the best driving game?

I haven't tried most of the driving games. I get too competitive and it ends up taking up too much of my time.

I struggled to get a point but once I won a game I won a set straight away. Assuming you are playing the novice move in for his serves.

Vettel is not as good as Hamilton but I think McLaren don't want to rush di Resta as they have spent a lot of time producing to great young drivers and

they don't want them fighting each other too early. I think he will be in a McLaren for 2010 though.

We REALLY don't want to know ;)

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:15

PC World do them for not much more than £10

    Do I go for call centre/MacDonalds Drive-Thru style or wireless/bluetooth set-up?

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:16

yeah that’s pretty old. Done last year i believe. i think there is a video on youtube of it…

Well, nothing really cool has happened to Honda F1 since Surtess won the '67 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, so it just becomes a matter of much propaganda can you smotach in the meantime.

Honda in 68 (wrong), Honda in 69 (wrong), Honda in 70 (wrong), Honda in 71 (wrong).......

Cheap and cheerful will be fine

  • lou21/02/2009 at 02:19

@steven, serve is now 150mph, am catching... slowly...

  • me21/02/2009 at 02:20

erm. no clue. anything with headphone is good because it cancels echo.

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 02:20

    Anyone?

I just have a headset with a cable and a usb plug.

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:20

if that fails, landline works just as well.

I have considered it, my wireless phone's battery is so poo that I doubt it has the legs for a SidePodChat

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 02:21

I lost 4-6, 5-7 to the pro. He broke my serve on my sixt service game.

Shame we can't play each other on this game.

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:22

Thoroughly recommend Silversun Pickups Radio on Last.fm, btw

Good chilled/shoegazey stuff for The Parade Lap too

  • lou21/02/2009 at 02:23

Shame we can’t play each other on this game.

haha you'd win for sure. it's probably a good thing we can't otherwise i'd be demanding that we continue playing until i win :P

  • RG21/02/2009 at 02:24

Beat the novice on the second attempt, 6-3, 6-1. Bring on the next guy

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:25

I just have a headset with a cable and a usb plug.

Do I need a VOIP headset or will a USB headset be fine?

(The only differences seem to be better adjectives at the moment)

  • Dom21/02/2009 at 02:25

Yay! I finally won the match!

  • lou21/02/2009 at 02:26

that's strange, i accidentally navigated away from the doohickey page and when i returned the comments were from about an hour ago. i refreshed and it was fine.

  • RG21/02/2009 at 02:26

    Oooh, recorded 154 mph

Beat the novice on the second attempt, 6-3, 6-1. Bring on the next guy

I found that I went very quickly from scoring a few points to winning against the first guy. Took me 30 minutes to figure out I had to use the arrows to aim the shot since it doesn't say that any where.

  • Jackie21/02/2009 at 02:26

Mine is just a USB headset that cost about £10 from PC world .. think it works okay

What is Di Resta doing next year

    Maybe Maplin....

i'd had the page tab open for ages and pressed or did something and ended up looking at ye olde commenting... which confused me, then when i went back to the doohickey (actually clicked back rather than typing it in the address bar) it showed the older comments. not sure if that helps..

  • glennjimin21/02/2009 at 02:31

What is Di Resta doing next year

i think he's staying in DTM but getting this years car. taking Ralfs seat maybe?

  • lou21/02/2009 at 02:31

great now i need to beat Steven AND RG...

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:31

    I’ve had that before…

Doohickey likes to freak out now and again, so would you if you had such a choice name!

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 02:31

What is Di Resta doing next year

It hasn't been announced yet. WHen Merc announced their DTM team they said that one of the new cars had not been assigned. It was di Resta's unless he had another prgram. A couple of weeks ago they gave it to Ralf. ART the GP2 team they placed Lewis with has announced their drivers so he is not going there.

I would still believe he is going to be getting a lot of testing miles for USF1 but no-one can say anything until they make their announcement on 24th.

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 02:32

That’s what I though, we have Sennheiser set-ups onboard the aircraft at work but I doubt I’d get an adapter from PC World

    Probably marginally over-specced for Skype.

Mentioned on his blog (back in Dec) about almost putting pen to paper about a race winning drive

Doohickey likes to freak out now and again, so would you if you had such a choice name!

Yup, same here, but 1 hour is a bit of an exageration, only realy 20 mins

  • me21/02/2009 at 02:32

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 02:36

No. A1GP online tomorrow. Start there.

Dave Gorman was talking about being lambasted for abandoning My Space.

He had an auto reply saying "sorry, this is not being monitored anymore, if you wish for more info on DG then go to DaveGorman.blah blah

His reaction was, if you phoned someone and heard 'you can reach me on this number' would you give a torrent of abuse, as the My Space [cadets?] did?"

erm... no... they are usually signs at the side of the road pointing in the direction of golf shops... i always dread seeing them, cause i know when dad sees them the chance of us actually going in is about 65%... golf shops = very boring places.

Was on Sky News (My Mam was watching it), was stuttering a lot and smiling a lot so I'm guessing he's intrested. A lot.

Was on Sky News (My Mam was watching it), was stuttering a lot and smiling a lot so I’m guessing he’s intrested. A lot.

He's doing the rounds a bit this morning isn't he? Was also on Five Live!

From BBC News 24 this morning:

If we were in discussions I wouldn’t be allowed to say it because there would be some kind of clause which would prohibit me talking about it.

I love Grand Prix. If Bernie Ecclestone can make it more cost effective for the likes of the Virgin brand to come into that sport, and if he can champion clean motorcar racing, then at some stage we might be interested in getting involved.”

If there were I wouldn’t be allowed to tell you, so I cannot clarify it I’m afraid.

    Just slightly evasive.

  • LadySnowcat21/02/2009 at 10:31

He's getting a lot of publicity for his 25th Virgin anniversary...

I'd forgotten he's been "interested" in Northern Rock but then stepped back...

I am hoping that his interest is more than a publicity stunt for his 25th... he's getting a lot of exposure for virtually no cost at present...

I heard him on the Beeb, TV and radio, and I didn't think his interest came over that well...

    Let's hope that's a negotiating ploy....

  • Dom21/02/2009 at 11:36

I am hoping that his interest is more than a publicity stunt for his 25th… he’s getting a lot of exposure for virtually no cost at present…

I was thinking that. It's not the first time he's been involved in a takeover and got lots of headlines before totally disappearing, like with Northern Rock.

Didn't Branson say he was interested in buying Gatwick Airport when BAA put it up for sale? Whatever happened to that bid?

And didn't he briefly do the exact same thing and bid for Bradford and Bingley too?

Just making the most out of the free publicity, like he always does. The guy is very clever. Even if he doesn't buy Honda, my guess is that Virgin will launch some new product shortly.

I'd say he is thinking about it. He made a slip-up in the BBC interview (listen from 5:53 on this BBC interview). Following a question attempting to clarify the existence or lack thereof of discussions with Honda F1, Richard said, "If there are...". Then he stuttered to a slightly giggly halt as he noticed the grammatical issue with his utterance.

"If there are" implies there can be, despite his saying in the previous answer that F1 needed to change first, whereas "If there were" (which he used earlier) implies that such discussions are not possible under present conditions (more in line with what he'd previously said).

He recovered quickly with, "If there were, I wouldn't be allowed to tell you", but the damage was done, at least to my ears.

    ah thanks. real tennis is much easier {Comment #60}

For me, real tennis is a lot harder. I got seven tennis balls on the school roof last half-term I played it (note that the half-term in question was only six weeks). Which would be more impressive had I not been attempting to get said balls into the normal playing area of the tennis court. In addition, I sent a couple of balls into the car park for the petrol station next door and several more in hedges.

Strangely enough, I never won a tennis game in the entire half-term...

i so hope so. i'm a little worried about what he said on five live, about f1 possibly needing to be a little more green etc before he enters the sport... i'd hate it if he was just doing this for publicity, it's hardly fair on the fans if that's true.

I thought it was gonna be like ‘The Future’s Bright, The future’s Orange’ with Orange as a shock new buyer for Honda

I think it would be great for Orange to buy Honda. I think Ornage really missed the plot by not having a green plan when they bought Arrows, a while ago and now it might be time for a second shot at seeing an F1 car that looks like a Jack-O'-Lantern on wheels....

Just think of all the "Smashing Pumpkins" jokes we could come up with if the two (Orange) Hondas took out each other....

that's a quick demo of doohickey comment previews in action. as you can see the style sheets are all a bit jumpy, and there's more work to be done. still hoping to get something up today though.

It's just been on my mind all day in work (yeah I know, I don't think about much... :p) and now I've just come on to see Branson saying he'll enter F1 when it's faults are rectified, and as a fan I just feel a little... I don't know. I wish there was more conviction to his words I suppose. I got the same feeling with dave richards after his whole 'we'll enter eventually but not now' stuff.

yeah i totally understand how you feel. i wasn't totally happy with what he said today, but in the end what he says to the press, and what he actually does could be two very different things. Bernie is keen on him buying Honda and has been on the phone to 'his people' so that's kinda a good sign.

    Lotus Honda, Williams Judd.

I think that's cruel in a well-meaning way, like bobbing a dogs tail a small piece at a time so it will not hurt the dog as much.... Just as I am sure that a Panda named Carlos would not put up with that sort of stuff and seek revenge...

  • 2008 Sidepodcastland Champions Jordan F121/02/2009 at 20:31

Hmmm, just looking at old F1 history.... In 1995, with both Schuie and Hill driving Renault engined cars, and Herbert and Coulthard being decent rear gunners, I wonder what the odds where for Alesi (Ferrari), Barrichello and Irvine (both Jordans..) in that order in Montreal....

I think i’m a little confused, didn’t Honda already confirm that Virgin are in talks with them…. so why is Branson saying ‘if’?…

If he says yes that is the end of the story until the deal is done. If he says something vague he gets lots more intervies and therefore lots more free advertising. The bottom line is he is buying and it will be announced by Tuesday.

  • Steven Roy21/02/2009 at 21:29

It is important to remember that while Branson is doin interviews he is still negotiating with Honda and Bernie so if he comes across too positive the prices will go up.

  • Scott Woodwiss21/02/2009 at 21:37

GPM2 2008 update - playing as Renault, won the WDC with Alonso in the first year, now currently running with Kubica and Vettel, got virtually the best car on the grid thanks to acquiring better technology from other teams, all the top sponsors and about a million dollars coming into the bank per race. Things are looking good so far :)

I just tried the top level of the tennis game we were playing last night. Didn't go very well. 6-0, 6-0. I only scored 9 points in the whole match and one of them was a double fault.

Sometimes you just know straight away you are not going to win. First point I hit a 152mph serve as wide as I could and he it straight back past me. I think it is a big step up.

Philip Pope, who wrote the music for the Chicken Song was on a show about comedy songs recently. He explained that people still mention it to him, then say that the song they really liked was on the B side - I've Never Met A Nice South African except he didn't write that.

Lyrics were by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who went on to create Red Dwarf.

I go to that page regularly but I don't ever vote in the polls Yahoo! has. So it's not necessarily the case that everyone who goes there can be bothered to answer the question, especially when it's a multiple choice answer to something that could have literally hundreds of different replies (not that all of them would be sensible*)

    * - Murray Walker once declared Ukyo Katayama the greatest driver in F1 ever in the middle of a commentary. Whether this was a slip of the tongue was never fully answered, possibly because anyone who knew who Ukyo was would have struggled to see how he could possibly be F1's greatest-ever driver.

I'm not actually a fan of smilies, despite what you might think. But SPC caters to all sorts, so I say go for it if you want.

I have to agree on the animated ones though. Even the lol smiley below is starting to annoy me.

(This is the second time I'm posting this comment - the first didn't actually work - it just disappeared after hitting Post. It happened to me earlier in the evening, but eventually (like 60s later) appeared. As this one hadn't shown after about 120s, I thought I'd post it again.)

The comment box disappeared. The message didn't show.

Earlier, when I was halfway through re-typing, the message finally appeared on the doohickey. This time, it didn't show at all. And at no point did the moderation message show either.

  • Dom22/02/2009 at 02:45

New comments arrive faster (and sign) can see the 02(colon)32(colon)37 on my own comments.

k, appreciate the info. the box shouldn't close without some warning. must've missed something.

  • me22/02/2009 at 02:47

I think it doesn’t like the and sign.

    the what and the who?

    :D

  • Steven Roy22/02/2009 at 02:49

Definitely doesn't like anything with an and sign. I have tried a few variations an always get the pop up at the top of the screen saying

    Error: Invalid post id,

  • Dom22/02/2009 at 02:49

    the what and the who?

Think of Shift 7 on windows.

It wont let you use it.

    right :)

I was so meant to say ampersand! :D And as Steven said, plus symbol causes issues as well.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2009 at 02:51

I tried using the ampersand in a sentnce, with other shift number characters or even just on its own and they all show the same fault

I decided to print all the characters possible using single key or shift operations. I got a couple of warnings then I deleted the ampersand and posted it straight into the mod queue.

cool. that's a good thing (bar ampersand). because i've re-written akismet integration and that comment looked spammy. next step is to implement a whitelist for regular commentors, but that's next weeks task.

Before I get to see the new moderation message?

Before I get to see the new moderation message?

you can see it by removing your name from the field top left of the doohickey, then trying to post.

    same thing, different text.

  • Ollie22/02/2009 at 03:03

you can see it by removing your name from the field top left of the doohickey, then trying to post.

Hahaha. I hope this whitelist is based on email as the identifier. :)

  • Ollie22/02/2009 at 03:08

    Where?

You know where it said "you must enter a name"?

Just imagine that dark background, SPC icon and X, but with the text, "You comment is..."

  • Ollie22/02/2009 at 03:09

I seem to be having real issues with the letter 'r' tonight!

  • me22/02/2009 at 03:11

  • Ollie22/02/2009 at 03:13

    imagine with your eyes:

I was sitting here thinking, "Should I purposely type a rude word into the comment box just to get the message? What if it doesn't work and posts the comment? Nah, I can't do it, I just can't!" :D
