Friday at last. It's been a relatively slow news week, but things might be picking up again now. Whatever happens though, we can always find things to entertain ourselves with. Here's what we've been talking about recently:
- The latest mini series came to an end this week, and we've had some good suggestions for future episodes. If you've got any thoughts or ideas for upcoming shows of Days that Shook the F1 World or any of the other series we have, please feel free to leave them in the comments or on the wiki.
- The Honda speculation is endless, but it looks like Bernie is getting involved now. He's spoken to Mr Branson apparently, and is cheerleading him on to takeover the team. It looks like this may be the only option other than the management buyout, so fingers crossed something is worked out soon.
- We're thinking about hosting a Sidepodchat this weekend, so if you're free and would like a chat on Sunday, please let us know in the comments. If you're not sure what the Sidepodchat is all about, you can listen to the first show here.
As ever, feel free to discuss anything you fancy. Let us know if you've got anything exciting planned for the weekend, and I will see you in the comments.
So, when was it mentioned that Malaysia were supposed to be having a night race this year? I thought it was always going to be twilight. BBC seemed to be making a big deal of it. Maybe they're gearing up for the improved coverage
Silverstone is changing
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73337
Bye bye Abbey
I think so. The wheels have just been slowly kicked into motion, me thinks. And about time too. Although the information could be a little better, as you say. For the BBC though, this is lightning pace in comparison. :(
They said this time last year that they'd be up for it, but nothing was ever agreed.
Bit flippin' late to be spending £5m now isn't it?
Yeah, I thought they were 'warm' to the idea but the article seemed to be making a big deal out of something that was never promised
MotoGP? Doing the swap with Donnington.
Um, no:
"The current F1 GP track will not be affected by the changes, so will remain available for other events."
Yeah, when it all shakes out I wonder who'll be holding the brown & messy end of the stick?
Of course, they probably spent countless millions pushing through plans for the new pit and paddock complex only to have Bernie decide otherwise a couple of weeks later that they wouldn't be hosting the race in the future.
True.
Am surprised the new contract was signed, actually. Didn't Bernie say the track was getting a bit 'old'?
I know who it won't be.
:D
A Bernie negotiating tactic most likely
Uh-huh. That stick joke's best left unsaid too ;)
I didn't mean him, I meant the other one.
Yeah, I know. But they're still like Morecombe & Wise in my head, can't separate them.
That's probably unfair, maybe the Chuckle Brothers :D
Which one has the short fat hairy legs? :)
Oh dear oh dear.
Do I sense one of Lukeh's photoshopped images?
I think I do... :D
They share a bed?
It wouldn't surprise me!
Well, I thought I was being a bit unfair to Eric & Ernie
Where's my smiley for the Homer Simpson shudder?
Ever since Slavica moved out... ;)
:D
Who wears the maid's outfit? [must STOP right now!]
Glenda Jackson of course. Her or André Preview.
much fun:
http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/02/three-blondes-and-scud.html
Changing the subject. :D
me?
Good call though, someone had to
They looked genuinely scared in the first part of that clip. Good stuff and nice distraction from the comedy double act metaphors.
over teams currently signed up to spc fantasy racers league :)
200. i meant to say 200 :)
What makes them different from normal teams, then? :P
:(
Damn, was about to break out my "THIS IS SPARTA!" line.
Maybe by the end of March
is it about time we had some honda news?
was just typing a comment... i have some.... speculation....
Yay for Honda!
me too... you first :)
You're becoming addicted to this
Maybe there's a meeting you can go to
"Hi, My name is.... I'll get my coat" ;)
:D
Damn! I have nothing!
Must.try.harder.
Mac Q: FF3 and Flash video. I get very jerky video stream from embedded flash video and YouTube type things, Safari is fine. FF2 seemed ok too, if I recall
Have uninstalled and then reinstalled Flash 10, is it just me?
hmmm.... well i have no idea if it's true or not, since it's only on a forum, and could easily be someone making it up, however i'm willing to share it as we have nothing to loose... someone on a forum claims
'Jenson was at the factory for a seat fitting yesterday and the trucks are on the way to Barcelona for testing very shortly ' link - http://is.gd/kaJw
the same person also said this at around 1pm yesterday
'Some hot gossip for you hot off of the press, Jensen is at Honda right now and is in the simulator as i type.' http://is.gd/kaK5
so there you have it. most likely rumour or someone making it up.... but if it is true, surely a good sign...
ROFL at "oh, you're quite good aren't you" to Jason Plato
fine for me. no probs to report.
same with ours vids?
Any web media players, worse if not fully streamed [see how I avoided the 'b' word there?]
Never noticed it during live streaming but am not expecting HD footage there
Only bugs me recently as have not long switched from FF2 and kinda wish I hadn't sometimes, no major benefits for me
nice one lou, that is good information. and i'll add to that, realhondaf1 are getting a bit excited about some info they've received:
http://www.f1network.net/main/s169/st140340.htm
in short, much confidence about senna. realhonda were the first to break the earthdreams livery news and were on the money. was a long time ago tho, so proceed with caution.
btw lou: reading more of those forum threads, i cannot believe i'd forgotten about this:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2007/06/08/now-shes-a-writer-too/
that video was made for virgin media!
i may have gone slightly crazy and spent a long time looking for the smallest piece of news.... and i may have overloaded my laptop several times with the number of tabs i was using... then again i may not have done :P
;)
:D
:D
Have only just read the Planet F1: Good Week Bad Week homage and love the line about Toyota dissing Euro test sessions for Bahrain
On the verge of an announcement now. :)
More RAM Lou
I hope to christ Senna doesn't sign. Mainly because there'd be no Rubens.
ooo nice one. looks like Rubens has a bit of support too. shame he doesn't have the sponsorship success Bruno has. This is also interesting -
'The ex-Honda team, who we expect to be testing their Mercedes engined car in Barcelona on 9 March with Bruno Senna and Jenson Button in attendance' ties in quiet nicely with the seat fitting comments from the forum, and the transporter rumours. Although the rumours say it was only 2 transporters... is that enough for everything?
Get it here for cheaps
:o...........
.........
.....
..
.
nope. it's not enough for a straightline test, and it's mighty early for a test on the 8th, unless they're just sending hospitality units and are planning an announcement from the circuit?
Maybe its a trick to get everyones hopes up before a big letdown?
An expensive one then, who do they think they are RBS?
}:D
Nope.
that's what i was thinking, cause of all the talk about the five renault transporters (or how ever many it was)... it's possible they are just planning on announcing it at the circuit. unless they are planning on getting to melbourne early, so Bernie can't lock them out of the circuit (like he did with aguri), cause they will already be there :P (i joke of course ;) )
Or, they are sending the cars to the recycling plant.
I really don't do this 'morale boosting' thing very well do I?
Not really, am just imagining Dom & Lou giving you 'evils'
Committed to green issues to the end? I hope not.
grr it's a good job we live so far apart R.G :P
haha, i was looking for an 'evils' smiley but couldn't find one :(
Did anyone ever make the Dearth Dream joke?
I'll still be moving a bit north still, right about now... ;)
Tis
: evil :
:evil@
Ooops,
:D
Ha ha, no workey
Interesting. That means I have to worry about 197 teams....:P >em>.
i mighta broken that in doohickey :(
 ....
Really is "don't you be givin' me evils" then
?
omg! it worked for some random reason!
It likes me y'see.
works on postback, but refresh and it vanishes. don't worry, can sort.
Last years, probably.
-shakes head-
that's what it is.
Must be broken then. ;)
Mr Green works.
Grrr
are trying to create work for me?
tis what ya get for being mean about honda ;)
It works for me.
So, when was it mentioned that Malaysia were supposed to be having a night race this year {Comment #1}
Back in 2007, Bernie asked Sepang to have a full night race. The Malaysian authorities investigated the possibility but eventually negotiated a twilight race instead. It was all handled much more quietly than Australia's similar battle.
I was simply being pessimisitc, with a no hint of meaness.
Maybe a little.
Alright a lot ;)
i'll settle for nothing but optimism where that team are concerned (how else do you think us honda fans have got through the last 2 years ;) )
:D
No, you are actually very good at it RG, but then again, I am not a fan or Honda or Button, and with Barrichello gone, I say "a plague on both your Houses!"
Yeah, my impression was always "well, we'll see" from the organisers
Karma!
True, true. Unless you secretley supported other teams?
The power of dreams?
[couldn't resist]
:( :(
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
:( :(
I'm not going to say anything right now.
wise decision. ;)
Must make tomorrow's lunch, will be quick. Cold Guinness is waiting ;)
[and am now avoiding evils meself]
:D
!!!
If I did, then it would have been Williams, so not much to shout about...
XD. I love being a BAR/Honda fan, it makes the jokes even better. I love these, hope you have more.
but the man's a legend, have you read this:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73356
Don't encourage them, Joe ;)
Must be like being a Birmingham City fan e.g. "They've brought a new minibus - it's to take the fans home after the match."
Two years of having to defend the root of all jokes...
And for what?
I don't find it funny.
I would, but I don't want to be watching F1 from up in the sky...
Because if I didn't laugh, I'd be more depressed than I already am. See? K, want another team to pick on instead?
Some very wise words there.
Legend cannot be emphasised enough.
:D
Start of the season, when Spurs were getting beat by anyone and everyone, there were some (a lot) of jokes at the expense of us, I had a little chuckle at some of them.
Legend
Aye. One of the few greats in the paddock
:D
haha ;) yet another wise move. your learn very quickly ;)
he is rather awesome :D
I must say I'll always be looking out for Williams. Must be the Engineer in me
Don't you worry, I'll ruin it in about 10 minutes ;)
haha :D
He'll have forgotten by the morning though.
USF1?
Well we could, if it existed.
Here's my view about the whole Honda silliness:
If an expect gunslinger tries to draw but ends up shooting himself in the foot repeatedly, stopping only when the gun is out of bullets, how can you not help but laugh?
Is there much material for comedy moments at the expense of USF1? I was thinking of Toyota.
Am sensing a theme from you tonight ;)
No, not Toyota :(
haha :D
Well, that's just not even funny!
[zzzzzzzzzzzzzz]
You forgot about reloading but I like the analogy
It's a comedy technique - referring to previous things for laughs. :)
And explaining the joke is playing to the cheap seats ;)
:D
So our gunslinger has emptied sixz rounds into each foot and now reloads both pistols to blast his feet away again?
Now we have gone beyond comedy and into the realm of Mel Brooks...
What do they do again?
Sorry, didn't mean to be patronising.
That means talking down to people.
:D
LMAO
Not a lot very well
:D
spend vast wads of cash
hahaha :D
:D
Class
But if you "talk down" to the people in the cheap seats they will not be able to hear you unless you "speak up"....
Hehe
Now that is a conundrum, best ignore them then
[ooh, "Please note: you must enter a name to post a comment"]
Try nodding your head up and down as you speak... :P
Nominated
Then they might think I'm agreeing with them, that's just not on :)
On a side note: I was most pleased to be referred to as cantankerous yesterday
Isn't it nice to have verbose friends!
It's not my line though - an old stalwart of the comedy circuit.
I suppose we can't laugh at Toyota, because they're so dull. OOOOHHHHHH.
I'll nominate with a paraphrase caveat
I think you still get the nod for the comment though, where's Alianora when you need a rule clarification?
:)
Right, waaay past the time I should be asleep. Night all
night Andy
nighty night andy
night buddy.
Night.
The best analogy would be to compare Honda's F1 efforts to that of the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.....
Careful everyone, it might bleed on you !
G'night fella
oooh, harsh.
:D
It's just a flesh wound
It's been nice knowing you ;)
... but fair
'night Bracketry...
Oh, what happened to those?
*suppresses anger* ..... :evils:
So what are you guys going to do with no arms or no legs? -
"Bite my legs off?" :D
haha
Channel that energy into Monty Python research, it'll be so very good for the soul Lou
Sleeping quietly they were, then an evil lurker we shall call Honda swiped and cut them. Then after looking at the mess, I realised I needed cost cutting measures, so reducing every possible character used in a name became a must.
haha i already like monty python :)
I'm expecting to wake up in the morning with some Honda-related news. Certainly I'm expecting some by tomorrow evening. Friday seems to be the day for big news, for me anyway.
I'm off also, night you lot.
haha honda news seems to come in early in the morning ;)
night
And so it goes on... :(
Night Joe, Brackety...
Gute Nacht Joe
night joe.
'nigh Joe
*night*
a question i've been mulling over in my head for a few mins now... where did honda used to do straight line testing? i can't remember, yet i remember seeing photos from a test once...
santapod.
Ah ha, home of the Jet Car :D :D :D
Night Joe.
ahh that's it, thank you :) it just accured to me that there must have been somewhere a little closer to them than Kemble Airport. sorry i think or random things late at night ;)
Who doesn't? :)
there's bound to be somewhere closer than dover ;)
Not for Lou :D
:D
haha :D i must admit when i heard that the transporters had been spotted i did almost ask mum if we could quickly pop down to dover for an hour to see if they were around. i thought the better of it though. i remember the one time we followed a load of f1 transporters (mostly honda ones) on the way home one day... i went a little mental (this was before i'd actually seen an f1 car 'in the flesh' though...)
:D
Early last year I was sat behind a flatbed truck with an uncovered Ferrari '08 on the back, waiting for the traffic lights. [on the way to a certain airport]
Wish I'd got my camera phone out (it was about 6am, I was tired)
Amid the grieving, a rare act of sportsmanship

Why does it always seem to get busy after midnight nowadays? ;)
i'm wondering if it's safe to go to bed now.. i mean... what are the chances of any more honda news this time of night?...
Holidays? For me and I think lou anyway, Mr C, well, is Mr C. Bassano is described on his wiki page as being the one who posts early on in the morning, then the late night Americans and early morning Aussies, you want me to go on?
yep it's 1/2 term for me. can't believe it's friday already... where did the week go..
It's 3am??
Am gonna get some sleep. Night everyone. :)
I know, only felt like yesterday that I was covered in dirt on my bike, and that was Tuesday. Phew.
Ciao Dom.
Night Dom.
That'll do. ;)
night everyone who's sleeping.
lol i was just about to ask if you'd fallen asleep as you'd been pretty quite.
coding doohickey :)
anything we can help with?
If you have an audible 'new doohickey post' mod in the pipeline, now would be a good time to break it out Mr C
a what now?
Do you know how to center a header in blogger?
Until I wake up, it's still Thursday :D
not at the moment as i'm not on the right computer, but i may very well ask a few questions in the morning/ afternoon/whenever i wake up :)
ollie already answered that didn't he?
Did I not say that didn't work?
ahh, missed it. i was gonna suggest something similar.
Night everyone. Think I will watch Grand prix on DVD again....
there's some "interesting" vids in drop.io if you care to look. i didn't tell you that tho.
Oh well, its not too bad where it is.
Sorry, neglected to quote Lou's comment for context
"i’m wondering if it’s safe to go to bed now.. i mean… what are the chances of any more honda news this time of night?…"
"If you have an audible ‘new doohickey post’ mod in the pipeline, now would be a good time to break it out Mr C"
Otherwise known as the Honda News Bing
when you say didn't work.
is it that you can't change the style-sheet? or you changed but made no difference?
hahahahahaha. i see :)
does that help at all? http://www.bloggerforum.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16807
I'm working my way through Studio 60.. most nights
G'night Jordan
cheers lou, looks good there
i didn't really do anything... google did it for me :)
shhhh
hahahahaha :D
Did Bracketry (sorry, R.G.) post the Heidfeld one?
Nope, I'm gonna have a look at it though.
I'll try in the morning when I'm awake
okay i better get some sleep otherwise i wont be in a fit state to get up early and do some more coursework (fun times). Night all x
night lou.
see ya lou
I've done what I've wanted to do. So at this point, have a nice morning.
see ya rg.
night matey
I think the big deal is not this year, but the fact they're saying to Bernie - you're not getting a night race before 2015, maybe never.
We know what happens to circuits that try and stand up to Mr E.
Meh. I won't miss Malaysia.
You will when it's replaced with a Valencia-esque track ;)
Stop it, it's Friday!
The Talented Mr Jazdy - you couldn't make it up :-)
My Polish workmates think that's hilarious!
Suzuka revamp set to be completed
FTA:
'Start Suzuka Opening Thanks Day F1 Kick Off Party'?
Only the Japanese could think of a name like that :-D
Living here in Thailand, Malaysia would be a big miss!! Cheap tickets. Cheap flights. Great F1 Village. KL is also a great city to visit for the weekend.
Will attend Malaysia, Bahrain and Singapore this year. Malaysia is really the only one available to visit at a reasonable price.
Depending on the time I should be available for Sidepodchat on Sunday. Let me know!
7pm GMT, is the plan nathan, would be excellent to have your company.
also, if you're going to that many races, we may need to hassle you to be our official trackside doohickey tester! you don't happen to have a smartphone do you?
:D
Let's get it over with. Baby Meerkats alert:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7901055.stm?lss
haha :D
Hmm. They are pretty cute, but I don't fancy keeping worms and maggets for them as food.
I can almost hear Mr C [phew!]
Have just been informed the Euromillions jackpot today is £25m. That would go someway towards running Honda, wouldn't it?
For a few months!
Sidepodcast F1. :)
Can I be the driver? :D I swear I won't crash anything (much.) and, as an added bonus, I won't press that button labeled KERS self-destruct!
I wonder how many current F1 drivers said that in their interview :)
A quick question - have Williams revealed their racing livery yet?
Not to my knowledge - the 'car' has been launched but the 'livery' comes later...
later this month isn't it?
I shall go figure out the mysteries of drop.io then ;-)
ths is probably a stupid question but it s just occured to me...
if they're taking off downforce and are given slicks but left with the same engines, wont the cars just be faster in a straight line?? and isnt that what max/fia dont want...?
oooh :)
The engines are detuned by 1,000rpm though?
F1 cars have a very high CD so this might cancel out...?
It looks likes the old one so not that exciting (so may not even be the new livery)
Dropped
thank you maverick.
oh ok, didnt know that. have been pretty out of date with this years f1 rule changes.
Why oh why did I just watch an entire match of ice hockey on eurosport? (5-3 to Russia if anyone cares)
That's a bit uninspiring. (as in the livery, not Maverick ;))
Hi,
7pm would be 2am here Let me know the arrangements by email.
Also would love to do some trackside stuff. Would really enjoy adding something to your podcast. I have an iphone and an HTC Trinity smartphones.
will do this evening :)
perfect!
thanks you.
not far off of this one from the other day:

Allianz might have let them out of the bag a bit early...
http://sponsoring.allianz.com/en/formula1/photos/index.html?ID=2&navID=1.6.2
Thought you were gonna quote me complaining about the Red Bull livery, but yeah, probably be the race car colours, unless they are planning a little surprse or something.
It looks likely, doesn't it.
Shame, I prefer the testing livery.
ha. great find sir.
Maybe Christine could have a word with Frank? ;)
is this for real?:
"ING has now stated that it is to remain in F1 after all, as chief sponsor of the Turkish Grand Prix, which this year will take place from 5-7 June in Istanbul."
http://www.crash.net/Formula+One/News/143191/1/ing_reveals_it_is_to_stay_in_f1_after_all.html
more here:

last year the race was sponsored by Petrol Ofis. so how come turkey is more important than spa?
ofisi. sorry.
Well Turkey does need some cash. Erm, I don't really know. You woulda thought Belgium be a more secure bet.
Bernie owns Turkey?
Cause Bernie runs Turkey? Dunno really. Perhaps Bernie wants to establish Turkey because it's a new market and because he wants to see a Tilke Venue succeed...?
I meant the circuit, not the country BTW (although, there are some countries he could buy with his wealth...)
Jinx! :P
Bernieland? Thats a scary thought.
Yes? They never said they were going anywhere this year...
But it looks like they'll sponsor that race BEYOND this year?
Don't say that, the circuit has enough bad luck as it is...
That's what the Crash.Net story said.
Jinx was on you, not on Turkey. :P Heh.
I don't need that - I'm going skiing tomorrow :-(
Really? I missed that...
Oh... Alright. I take it back. ;)
Cheers :-D
if i could bring myself to chuck my laptop out of the window i really would atm. It has not decided it will not open Word (only in safe mode), which also means it will not open any of my word documents. I want a mac, or failing that, a laptop that worked...
Right... I should be available on Sunday night for a chat. See you then (I'm off Skiing now and won't be back until Sunday Morning...)
Have a good time Gavin :)
Throw something else out of the window, as replacing a laptop and a window is quite costly. Maybe a coin, oh, and make sure the window is open, and you are accurate. My downfall.
haha :)
i would but a coin isn't as heavy, and therefore i wouldn't get the same satisfaction throwing it out of the window ;)
a box full of coins? Or is that Honda's budget? ;)
I'm gonna get a flight now to Japan now, I may feel safer there
:o.....
i'd love an excuse to go to Japan.... ;)
Not quite. ;)
Your laptop is an acer, right? When I had loads of probblems with my old acer I found there was a fantastic universial application that I nearly used to sort out all my frustrations with it... I believe it's called a 'hammer'. Sadly I didn't get to try this 'hammer' thing out ;)
haha :D you have no idea how tempted i am to do that. but i feel it may make things worse. ;)
Do it anyway, thats the fun bit, leave the cursing and answering too Tomorrow's Lou
haha yeah, i'm not willing to get told off by dad.. and don't have the money t buy myself a new laptop.... ;)
Place it somewhere that it can be easily knocked off by someone else.
'Dad, I don;t want to alarm you but when I got up this morning i noticed that my laptop fell down the starts, went into the washing machine, got thrown over the hosue, run over by a car and dropped under a sledgehammer. I always new this house was haunted!'
:D
Off for training now, so no more RG laptop advice for a little bit
:D
:D
how will i cope without your advice :P have a good time ;)
No but in Autosport today Frank said there would be a new sponsor on the car.
Bernie operates the Turkish race but does not own the track. The ING money will be going to him as the promoter though.
Oooh... spot the sponsor!
I know we do this every week, but there are some ah-mazing pictures today:
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/02/at_work.html
were air asia on the car last year?
yep. been there since 2007.
There are a lot of chickens in China.
I can't believe number 35. How can Swiss health and safety allow that?
on the car? i know they did the nico-plane thing, but where about's was the logo?
Can't help but be reminded of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnlDV5vAZy8
It's so very accurate. ;)
Number 41 freaks me out!
Why?
Then they might think I’m agreeing with them, that’s just not on {Comment #157}
Projecting one's voice works too (though not with an overhead projector - voices can't carry anything that heavy).
44 sorry.
I just can't figure out what he is going to do with that broom.
I’ll nominate with a paraphrase caveat
I think you still get the nod for the comment though, where’s Alianora when you need a rule clarification? {Comment #161}
What exactly are the rules for this? I didn't know there were any as such (except perhaps an unwritten one not to nominate your own quote).
And how far do they keep going after the picture?
You don't make that many pipes of that diameter a metre long/high. I would guess about 10 metres.
super mario heaven.
hehe :)
Some people have no concept of danger.
I used to work with a guy who came from the building industry. We had a chemical dryer with 3 tons of Freon in it which was permanantly boiling and had a vapour layer that was several metres above the floor. If you fell in you died. The whole thing was in a huge aluminium tank the top inch of which was bent horizontal. I found him one day strolling along the that edge one day with a tool box in his hand having just repared something.
sidepodspace.
It must be the season for this sort of thing. First Singapore wanted suggestions to name some corners now NASA want suggestions for part of the ISS.
http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/name_ISS/index.html

What a silly thing to do!
Maybe we should all suggest sidepodcast as the name.
That is kind of what I said to him.
Sidepodnode?
:D Great idea. That will confuse them
That is kind of what I said to him. {Comment #340}
Though possibly in a less flattering manner, if I interpret your comment correctly ;)
They just asked a question about Sutil on Eggheads. No-one had heard of him.
eggheads?
CJ is so annoying. :(
BBC2 quiz programme. Like sidepodpanel with correct answers
And thick
Aww.
Brainiest people in Britain against average Joe's
ahhh.
Hey! Franck is always the correct answer.
What about too 'Worst F1 driver ever?'
:(
That's my point. Eggheads have a different correct answer to each question. Stupid people.
Hehe.
Bloomin helicopter, do you mind not flying over my house? If you are trying to get some one on the A1, then fly over the damn A1.
jacques villeneuve question!
L'Equipe are now saying that Branson is the only option for Honda and the deal should be sorted by the begining of next week.
The French media use odd language but they say that the alternative bid by Fry and Brawn has taken water. I assume this means it has sunk.
:D
:o i want to do that!.... well.. without the repair bill afterwards :)
maybe he cleans the pipes?
For some reason that gave me an image of battleships with Ross and Nick on one side and Richard on the other...
you still moving to Japan then RG? :P
is it an f1 version of egg heads then?
Ooh, can I come? ;)
No, Lou might not kill me but you may.
Nope, it was initially general knowledge then a sports part, and then one of the sports Qs was about jacques. About when he was with Dannii Minogue, so totally relevant to sport then...
I'm now thinking Fiji.
You mean Fuji
depends how many honda jokes you make in the future ;)
Nope, Fuji is in Japan, Fiji is a bit further away.
I'm in a lot of trouble
Honda and Franck must be respected! :P
i have no desire to go to Fiji as there is no GP there, plus it's very far away. you'll be safe there ;)
When you like BMW and Klien, thats not going to be easy.
I think you should go somewhere with motor racing and football. Fiji only has rugby
haha :D
Australia it is (also has Rugby League and Union)
Klien used to test for Honda...
So we are getting somewhere now, I think.
Sato drove for BAR!
Technically, thats wasn't Honda.
no need to advertise that fact ;)
Shhh, I'm trying to win him over. ;)
Same team though.
BAR/Honda, same team different name :P
Different name.
lol :) i was meaning to ask you Dom, will you be supporting the team next season even though it wont technically be honda? (i've probably asked this before, but i'm sure you know what my memory is like by now)
Erm...
Jean Alesi drove for Jordan when they had Honda engines...?
Am struggling here...
Eh, don't like Alesi and don't like Jordan.
I can tell ;)
erm... RG likes Sato and without Honda Sato would never have got into f1 as he was first a driver for Jordan who had Honda engines, then BAR and then Super Aguri. Also according to his Wiki page he went to the Suzuka circuit Racing School age 19, which is managed by Honda. So you could even claim that Sato wouldn't have got into F1 without them....
Probably, I still want to see them succeed. For me, it doesn't get much better than a Jenson + Bruno/Rubens line-up either.
Will just be annoyed I can't say Honda any more. That's the real reason I supported them in the first place. Whatever the team is called this year, it wont mean anything...
Would be embarrassed to say I support Virgin too. What connection do they have with motorsport?
Even when people talk about Honda road cars I think of the F1 team. :(
Maybe when I phone to complain at how poor Virgin's internet is, I'll be thinking of their f1 team?
i can imagine there will be many jokes about the name if it is virgin f1.
yeah same, it's gonna take a lot of getting used to.
*awaits first win in f1*
The Sun is gonna have a field day
Honda rumour #2,789.
They're due at Silverstone next week for a shakedown of their new challenger/loser before heading on to Jerez in early March for testing. They'll be using Mercedes engines, but there won't be any trackside support from them.
:o..... why was it not this week!!! gah! .... any idea what day?..... *dreams about skipping school...*
not that i would ever miss school for f1. education is obviously more important than f1.
As a general rule maybe but missing one day of school for the chance to meet Jenson and take photos.
ooowww.... yeah... it would help my alevel photography project too... hmm.. it does depend on the day though.
Though it is just a rumour at the moment!
yeah i know... it's just too exciting ;)
Once gmm see it, it will be a news story. That makes it practically official and justifies a day off school.
not sure it would help with my quest to become a prefect though...
Of course, when they ask what gmm is, say ''Great Motorsport Messages"
I thought you wanted to be a photographer. Prefects have even shorter careers than racing drivers. :)
haha :) yeah but becoming a prefect helps with uni applications...which will hopefully lead to me becoming a photographer (if that is what i wanna do)
can you get near silverstone on a private test day?
who knows... i'll ask dad when he gets home, he knows some people who work at silverstone...
if you find out please do let us know. i'd be interested in going, but unless you have a reason to be there i can't see security being too helpful.
yep will do :)
Yay, I'm first to see Sidepodcast Diaries #16 :D
Grrr... :P
Alan Tremayne's here? ;)
alan?
I was on youtube as well.
Damn that German GP of 2000
Oops I mean David. Must have been thinking of Alan Permane. ;)
Ah, I see you're one to watch the full races too :D
:D
:D
Who?
I'm calling it research. Something for my blog
Alonso's race engineer I believe.
doesn't he do engines?
(don't get me started on that again :) )
Oooh, good choice. ;)
Brazil 2003 next on my list followed by either Monaco 1996 or Hungary 2006
Yes you are correct, he's Renault's chief engineer.
:D
isn't he the one you tend to hear on the Renault team radio?
ooo hungary 2006 was a good race, but then again i'm biased ;)
Try this guys, he's got tonnes of videos, a lot about Nigel Mansell but there's 2 or 3 official season reviews thrown in there for good measure. ;)
http://www.youtube.com/user/tice128
Hungary 2006? Hmmmm... nope doesn;t ring any bells lou.
...yeah I'm just gonna go hide in a nuclear bunker now
Thanks mate.
Recently watched Brazil '05 and Luxembourg '97.
I tell myself I have other things to do and I'll only watch the first part, but that never happens. ;)
:D
Mine will all have a theme behind them
testing12344
oops, pls ignore ;)
The 5 isn't working!!! Panic!
I sense some updates coming.
:D
:D
well he did say Thursday/ Friday :)
nope, not quite. i have a development tab open, and also the live tab.
eventually i was gonna get them mixed up.
i did... i was mistaken :)
should be tomorrow now.
:D lol i keep thinking it's wednesday so i wouldn't worry ;)
i wish it were!
me too. :D
It has occurred to me that Formula 1 could be come more green and exciting at the same time by getting rid of the asphalt run-offs and gravel traps and planting mature trees in their places instead.....
Does others think the same why or have I spent one too laps of practice at the old Mosport Park circuit on my pre-1968 Grand Prix sim?
And while we are at that subject of the old Mosport Park, what is wrong with a sunken race circuit that ends at the shoulders of the track to discourage from cutting chicanes or forcing lapped traffic off the road?
So you want go from seeing a car run over a nice, safe piece of tarmac runoff to seeing Piquet wrap his Renault around a giant oak. Actually.....
..... :D
Hell, No!. Oh, I keep forgetting that you are to young think that we might be thinking of the same person.....
Nelsonho I would not mind seeing wrap his Renault around an Dutch Elm, but the poor plant might get a disease that way.
I would love to see the Joker come back to F1. I could see him dropping an electric buzzer into Hamilton's Cockpit Seat before a Free Practic session....
HAHAHA! :D
All that momeny to get rid of the Abbey Chicane, and Silverstone can not replace a wooden bridge that looks like it was rotting away back in 1967!
true, sir. very true.
Calling Vienna...
Soo Doornbos goes IRL
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2009/02/20/doornbos-joins-newman-haas-in-irl/
Do you not remember the post you wrote last year?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/02/08/williams-odd-livery/#more-983
He he, possible comment of the year nomination?
Someone's alive, hallelujiah.
I wouldn't mind being greeted by Rosberg [helmet]
i was thinking the same thing. it's unusual for the site to be so quiet on a friday evening. In fact the whole f1 world seems a little sleepy today.
Wait until midnight. ;)
Maybe it is because every one else has lives and goes out and has fun, leaving us sad folks to maul over why didn't you do this right.
I'm playing Frenzic....
haha :)
i've just realised A1 GP is on this week. not that i will end up watching it, no doubt i'll forget come tomorrow. lol
Yay! Racing!
what's Frenzic?
frenzic.com Available for Mac OS X and iPod Touch/iPhone :)
"Minutes to learn and months to master, Frenzic is an exciting, fast-paced puzzle style game for Mac OS X that makes Tetris look like child's play."
*grabs ipod touch* looks fun :) i can imagine it's pretty addictive.
Yeah. It's one of the best games for the Touch.
Using it for balance?
Lou, do you read Digital Camera magazine? Looking for a decent photo mag for my noob beginnings with the D40
Plus, awards issue just come out
I used to early last year, sadly i don't anymore... f1racing has kinda taken it's place.
Would you rate it as decent though or suggest anything else?
i have usf1 news. although i'll probably feel the wrath of kathi for using google translate:
http://tinyurl.com/moreonepsilon
I'd certainly recommend it. It's a great magazine, always full of interesting articles, and amazing photos :)
i know, i know... it doesn't exist:
http://www.macrumors.com/2009/02/20/video-of-leaked-next-gen-mac-mini/
Cheers, bought last month's, just before the camera arrived. Seemed ok, wanted a more experienced opinion
i'd certainly rate it as one of the better magazine's out there, and my photography tutor buys the occasional copy too, so it must be okay ;)
When I get back from Phoenix my first project is going to be architecture
Battersea Power Station & Natural History Museum are two of my fave London buildings
:) when i did architecture for my AS photography i studied the London Eye, and kinda fell in love with it. it's kinda silly how you can develop a strong liking for a building/ structure once you've studied it from loads of different angles :) The Tate modern is a great building to photograph in London too.
Good point, also like to spend the afternoon watching the parkour guys on the South Bank
That is quite the engineering marvel too, was only supposed to be a temporary structure!
The national theatre's a good one for detail shots. seriously ugly building but interesting detail work with unusual textures in the concrete.
i'm so pleased they decided to keep it :) it's amazing, and their official photographer is also amazing, he does some awesome 360degree shots.
I'm a start taking this down, open to suggestions
And yep, 'tis quite fugly!
What about the Honda factory?
Virgin headquarters nice then? :)
In a previous job I often visited the Palace of Westminster. My contact there had an amazing view of the construction site from his office window. Sadly I wasn't able to take photos.
Also for indoor stuff just about any station on the jubilee line. Some very elegant engineering.
oo if your doing architecture, pop down to canary wharf :) i love it there, specially at night :D
Parliament is a stunning structure, I love the Gothic style
Need to re-vist Barcelona for the Gaudi buildings too
There's a station with an incredibly long staircase/escalator set-up near Canary Wharf. One of the longest in Europe for train stations apparently
Interesting Fact: The longest single escalator on the Underground is at Angel.
that's a good point, i've never really taken much notice of the architecture of the underground, i'm usually running for the nearest escalator out of there *shudders at the thought of the jubilee line being soooo far underground*
i used to think photography wasn't allowed on the underground, apparently it's fine as long as it's not flash photography.
and don't i know it. little tip, never run up it. it's harder than it might look. lol
Hmm, bad memories of that station. Was last there many moons ago going home v v drunk about 10am!
In Myanmar (nee Burma) it's illegal to photograph bridges!
I wasn't sure but took loads of photos last time I was down there and no one stopped me.
Unpretentious photography is fine :)
I used to walk up it every day. Once it wasn't working. That was hard work
Unpretentious photography is fine
I'm an architecture student, I only do pretentious photography ;)
really? any idea why?
Cool, when will you graduate?
Potential military targets/extremely secretive & oppressive government run by the armed forces. Many reasons, none of them hold water
:D
2 1/2 years in, another 4 1/2 to go. Onthe bright side the union is really cheap.
And the next construction boom should be under way by then ;)
Sidepodcast is now probably read by the Burmese government! :D
I know it well - used to be my nearest station
re photography on tube stations
"Tube stations
Seeing as we've heard so many instances of people being hassled over this, here's the low down: non-commercial photography on tube stations is most certainly allowed - and if any busybody tries to tell you different, politely tell them to bury their head in part 10 of rule Sa109 in the Working Reference Manual:
10.1 Passengers can take photographs with small cameras for private purposes, provided flashlights and/or tripods are not used no obstruction or inconvenience is caused to staff and/or passengers."
http://www.urban75.org/photos/photographers-rights-and-the-law.html#tube
If I'm very lucky, although I can see a life photoshoping images of SPAM ahead. :)
They just asked a question about Sutil on Eggheads. No-one had heard of him. {Comment #344}
Who got asked it, the quizmasters or the contestants? I could understand the contestants not knowing that one (even if it came up as a general knowledge question when they can confer with each other), but whenever I've seen the quizmasters in action, they've always known the answer to everything...
What about too ‘Worst F1 driver ever?’ {Comment #352}
That would never be asked on a quiz show. It would take about half an hour to list the candidates and explain why they were candidates, never mind the arguing that would follow (assuming at least two of the people in the room knew anything about F1).
The French media use odd language but they say that the alternative bid by Fry and Brawn has taken water. I assume this means it has sunk. {Comment #358}
At the very least it suggests that it is in trouble and that Ross Brawn is busy bailing out water. Nick Fry is probably still smiling despite getting his loafers wet.
The really clever ones struggle on sport usually.

The boys learning!!
Erm…
Jean Alesi drove for Jordan when they had Honda engines…?
Am struggling here… {Comment #389}
So did Jarno Trulli and he has the advantage of having driven an F1 car since ;)
i can imagine there will be many jokes about the name if it is virgin f1. {Comment #395}
If someone ever buys the Virgin team off Richard Branson it will be even worse *cringes*
Ah, but he never drove for Sauber. ;)
But I like Trulli...
:D
Oops I mean David. Must have been thinking of Alan Permane.
Who? {Comment #422}
Alan's job title at Renault is currently Chief Race Engineer, which in practise means he's responsible for getting the other engineers organised and is also number two to Pat Symonds on the pit wall. Previously race engineer to Fisichella, Trulli and Villenueve.
Alonso’s race engineer I believe. {Comment #424}
Incidentally, Alonso's race engineer is currently Dave Greenwood.
It has occurred to me that Formula 1 could be come more green and exciting at the same time by getting rid of the asphalt run-offs and gravel traps and planting mature trees in their places instead….. {Comment #448}
Somehow I don't think the PR trade-off would quite work. And Max is desperate for some good PR to get himself voted in as President of the Known (Motorsport) Universe (Except For Parts Of the USA) for the next four years.
In Myanmar (nee Burma) it’s illegal to photograph bridges!
really? any idea why? {Comment #501}
It's a military dictatorship that doesn't like people getting in its way. They probably only allow photography at all because of the tourists and pro-junta marketing...
The really clever ones struggle on sport usually. {Comment #513}
I see. So that's how come sometimes contestant teams have more than one player available for the final... (I only see snippets of Eggheads).
Ah, but he never drove for Sauber. {Comment #517}
True, but he's the sort of driver Peter Sauber would have liked had he still owned a team. Does that count?
