Friday at last. It's been a relatively slow news week, but things might be picking up again now. Whatever happens though, we can always find things to entertain ourselves with. Here's what we've been talking about recently:

  • The latest mini series came to an end this week, and we've had some good suggestions for future episodes. If you've got any thoughts or ideas for upcoming shows of Days that Shook the F1 World or any of the other series we have, please feel free to leave them in the comments or on the wiki.
  • The Honda speculation is endless, but it looks like Bernie is getting involved now. He's spoken to Mr Branson apparently, and is cheerleading him on to takeover the team. It looks like this may be the only option other than the management buyout, so fingers crossed something is worked out soon.
  • We're thinking about hosting a Sidepodchat this weekend, so if you're free and would like a chat on Sunday, please let us know in the comments. If you're not sure what the Sidepodchat is all about, you can listen to the first show here.

As ever, feel free to discuss anything you fancy. Let us know if you've got anything exciting planned for the weekend, and I will see you in the comments.

    So, when was it mentioned that Malaysia were supposed to be having a night race this year? I thought it was always going to be twilight. BBC seemed to be making a big deal of it. Maybe they're gearing up for the improved coverage

    I think so. The wheels have just been slowly kicked into motion, me thinks. And about time too. Although the information could be a little better, as you say. For the BBC though, this is lightning pace in comparison. :(

    So, when was it mentioned that Malaysia were supposed to be having a night race this year? I thought it was always going to be twilight.

    They said this time last year that they'd be up for it, but nothing was ever agreed.

    Bit flippin' late to be spending £5m now isn't it?

  • Bassano Clapper20/02/2009 at 00:09

    They said this time last year that they’d be up for it, but nothing was ever agreed.

    Yeah, I thought they were 'warm' to the idea but the article seemed to be making a big deal out of something that was never promised

    MotoGP? Doing the swap with Donnington.

    Yeah, when it all shakes out I wonder who'll be holding the brown & messy end of the stick?

  • Ollie20/02/2009 at 00:12

    Bit flippin’ late to be spending £5m now isn’t it?

    Of course, they probably spent countless millions pushing through plans for the new pit and paddock complex only to have Bernie decide otherwise a couple of weeks later that they wouldn't be hosting the race in the future.

  • Dom20/02/2009 at 00:12

    Yeah, I thought they were ‘warm’ to the idea but the article seemed to be making a big deal out of something that was never promised

    True.

    Am surprised the new contract was signed, actually. Didn't Bernie say the track was getting a bit 'old'?

    Have uninstalled and then reinstalled Flash 10, is it just me?

    hmmm.... well i have no idea if it's true or not, since it's only on a forum, and could easily be someone making it up, however i'm willing to share it as we have nothing to loose... someone on a forum claims

    'Jenson was at the factory for a seat fitting yesterday and the trucks are on the way to Barcelona for testing very shortly ' link - http://is.gd/kaJw

    the same person also said this at around 1pm yesterday

    'Some hot gossip for you hot off of the press, Jensen is at Honda right now and is in the simulator as i type.' http://is.gd/kaK5

    ooo nice one. looks like Rubens has a bit of support too. shame he doesn't have the sponsorship success Bruno has. This is also interesting -

    'The ex-Honda team, who we expect to be testing their Mercedes engined car in Barcelona on 9 March with Bruno Senna and Jenson Button in attendance' ties in quiet nicely with the seat fitting comments from the forum, and the transporter rumours. Although the rumours say it was only 2 transporters... is that enough for everything?

    nope. it's not enough for a straightline test, and it's mighty early for a test on the 8th, unless they're just sending hospitality units and are planning an announcement from the circuit?

    that's what i was thinking, cause of all the talk about the five renault transporters (or how ever many it was)... it's possible they are just planning on announcing it at the circuit. unless they are planning on getting to melbourne early, so Bernie can't lock them out of the circuit (like he did with aguri), cause they will already be there :P (i joke of course ;) )

    Back in 2007, Bernie asked Sepang to have a full night race. The Malaysian authorities investigated the possibility but eventually negotiated a twilight race instead. It was all handled much more quietly than Australia's similar battle.

    Must be like being a Birmingham City fan e.g. “They’ve brought a new minibus - it’s to take the fans home after the match.”

    :D

    Start of the season, when Spurs were getting beat by anyone and everyone, there were some (a lot) of jokes at the expense of us, I had a little chuckle at some of them.

    Well we could, if it existed.

  • 2008 Sidepodcastland Champions Jordan F120/02/2009 at 01:38

    Here's my view about the whole Honda silliness:

    If an expect gunslinger tries to draw but ends up shooting himself in the foot repeatedly, stopping only when the gun is out of bullets, how can you not help but laugh?

  • Joe20/02/2009 at 01:38

    Is there much material for comedy moments at the expense of USF1? I was thinking of Toyota.

    So our gunslinger has emptied sixz rounds into each foot and now reloads both pistols to blast his feet away again?

    Now we have gone beyond comedy and into the realm of Mel Brooks...

    So, when was it mentioned that Malaysia were supposed to be having a night race this year? I thought it was always going to be twilight. BBC seemed to be making a big deal of it.

    I think the big deal is not this year, but the fact they're saying to Bernie - you're not getting a night race before 2015, maybe never.

    We know what happens to circuits that try and stand up to Mr E.

    Suzuka revamp set to be completed

    FTA:

    "Full-scale renovation work will soon be completed," stated Honda, which will host a 'Start Suzuka Opening Thanks Day F1 Kick Off Party' on April 12.

    'Start Suzuka Opening Thanks Day F1 Kick Off Party'?

    Only the Japanese could think of a name like that :-D

    Meh. I won’t miss Malaysia.

    Living here in Thailand, Malaysia would be a big miss!! Cheap tickets. Cheap flights. Great F1 Village. KL is also a great city to visit for the weekend.

    Will attend Malaysia, Bahrain and Singapore this year. Malaysia is really the only one available to visit at a reasonable price.

    Depending on the time I should be available for Sidepodchat on Sunday. Let me know!

    ths is probably a stupid question but it s just occured to me...

    if they're taking off downforce and are given slicks but left with the same engines, wont the cars just be faster in a straight line?? and isnt that what max/fia dont want...?

    The engines are detuned by 1,000rpm though?

    F1 cars have a very high CD so this might cancel out...?

    Some people have no concept of danger.

    I used to work with a guy who came from the building industry. We had a chemical dryer with 3 tons of Freon in it which was permanantly boiling and had a vapour layer that was several metres above the floor. If you fell in you died. The whole thing was in a huge aluminium tank the top inch of which was bent horizontal. I found him one day strolling along the that edge one day with a tool box in his hand having just repared something.

    Nope, it was initially general knowledge then a sports part, and then one of the sports Qs was about jacques. About when he was with Dannii Minogue, so totally relevant to sport then...

  • Dom20/02/2009 at 19:20

    I can tell ;)

  • lou20/02/2009 at 19:32

    Am struggling here…

    erm... RG likes Sato and without Honda Sato would never have got into f1 as he was first a driver for Jordan who had Honda engines, then BAR and then Super Aguri. Also according to his Wiki page he went to the Suzuka circuit Racing School age 19, which is managed by Honda. So you could even claim that Sato wouldn't have got into F1 without them....

  • Dom20/02/2009 at 19:37

    lol i was meaning to ask you Dom, will you be supporting the team next season even though it wont technically be honda? (i’ve probably asked this before, but i’m sure you know what my memory is like by now)

    Probably, I still want to see them succeed. For me, it doesn't get much better than a Jenson + Bruno/Rubens line-up either.

    Will just be annoyed I can't say Honda any more. That's the real reason I supported them in the first place. Whatever the team is called this year, it wont mean anything...

    Maybe when I phone to complain at how poor Virgin's internet is, I'll be thinking of their f1 team?

  • lou20/02/2009 at 19:42

    They're due at Silverstone next week for a shakedown of their new challenger/loser before heading on to Jerez in early March for testing. They'll be using Mercedes engines, but there won't be any trackside support from them.

    It has occurred to me that Formula 1 could be come more green and exciting at the same time by getting rid of the asphalt run-offs and gravel traps and planting mature trees in their places instead.....

    Does others think the same why or have I spent one too laps of practice at the old Mosport Park circuit on my pre-1968 Grand Prix sim?

    And while we are at that subject of the old Mosport Park, what is wrong with a sunken race circuit that ends at the shoulders of the track to discourage from cutting chicanes or forcing lapped traffic off the road?

    i'd certainly rate it as one of the better magazine's out there, and my photography tutor buys the occasional copy too, so it must be okay ;)

    When I get back from Phoenix my first project is going to be architecture

    Battersea Power Station & Natural History Museum are two of my fave London buildings

    :) when i did architecture for my AS photography i studied the London Eye, and kinda fell in love with it. it's kinda silly how you can develop a strong liking for a building/ structure once you've studied it from loads of different angles :) The Tate modern is a great building to photograph in London too.

    Good point, also like to spend the afternoon watching the parkour guys on the South Bank

    That is quite the engineering marvel too, was only supposed to be a temporary structure!

    The national theatre's a good one for detail shots. seriously ugly building but interesting detail work with unusual textures in the concrete.

    i'm so pleased they decided to keep it :) it's amazing, and their official photographer is also amazing, he does some awesome 360degree shots.

    In a previous job I often visited the Palace of Westminster. My contact there had an amazing view of the construction site from his office window. Sadly I wasn't able to take photos.

  • glennjimin21/02/2009 at 01:13

    Also for indoor stuff just about any station on the jubilee line. Some very elegant engineering.

  • lou21/02/2009 at 01:14

    oo if your doing architecture, pop down to canary wharf :) i love it there, specially at night :D

    Parliament is a stunning structure, I love the Gothic style

    Need to re-vist Barcelona for the Gaudi buildings too

  • Bassano Clapper21/02/2009 at 01:15

    There's a station with an incredibly long staircase/escalator set-up near Canary Wharf. One of the longest in Europe for train stations apparently

    Interesting Fact: The longest single escalator on the Underground is at Angel.

    that's a good point, i've never really taken much notice of the architecture of the underground, i'm usually running for the nearest escalator out of there *shudders at the thought of the jubilee line being soooo far underground*

    i used to think photography wasn't allowed on the underground, apparently it's fine as long as it's not flash photography.

  • lou21/02/2009 at 01:18

    and don't i know it. little tip, never run up it. it's harder than it might look. lol

    I wasn't sure but took loads of photos last time I was down there and no one stopped me.

    re photography on tube stations

    "Tube stations

    Seeing as we've heard so many instances of people being hassled over this, here's the low down: non-commercial photography on tube stations is most certainly allowed - and if any busybody tries to tell you different, politely tell them to bury their head in part 10 of rule Sa109 in the Working Reference Manual:

    10.1 Passengers can take photographs with small cameras for private purposes, provided flashlights and/or tripods are not used no obstruction or inconvenience is caused to staff and/or passengers."

    If I'm very lucky, although I can see a life photoshoping images of SPAM ahead. :)

  • Alianora La Canta21/02/2009 at 13:03

    They just asked a question about Sutil on Eggheads. No-one had heard of him. {Comment #344}

    Who got asked it, the quizmasters or the contestants? I could understand the contestants not knowing that one (even if it came up as a general knowledge question when they can confer with each other), but whenever I've seen the quizmasters in action, they've always known the answer to everything...

  • Alianora La Canta21/02/2009 at 13:05

    What about too ‘Worst F1 driver ever?’ {Comment #352}

    That would never be asked on a quiz show. It would take about half an hour to list the candidates and explain why they were candidates, never mind the arguing that would follow (assuming at least two of the people in the room knew anything about F1).

  • Alianora La Canta21/02/2009 at 13:08

    The French media use odd language but they say that the alternative bid by Fry and Brawn has taken water. I assume this means it has sunk. {Comment #358}

    At the very least it suggests that it is in trouble and that Ross Brawn is busy bailing out water. Nick Fry is probably still smiling despite getting his loafers wet.

    Jean Alesi drove for Jordan when they had Honda engines…?

    Am struggling here… {Comment #389}

    So did Jarno Trulli and he has the advantage of having driven an F1 car since ;)

    Oops I mean David. Must have been thinking of Alan Permane.

    Who? {Comment #422}

    Alan's job title at Renault is currently Chief Race Engineer, which in practise means he's responsible for getting the other engineers organised and is also number two to Pat Symonds on the pit wall. Previously race engineer to Fisichella, Trulli and Villenueve.

    Alonso’s race engineer I believe. {Comment #424}

    Incidentally, Alonso's race engineer is currently Dave Greenwood.

    It has occurred to me that Formula 1 could be come more green and exciting at the same time by getting rid of the asphalt run-offs and gravel traps and planting mature trees in their places instead….. {Comment #448}

    Somehow I don't think the PR trade-off would quite work. And Max is desperate for some good PR to get himself voted in as President of the Known (Motorsport) Universe (Except For Parts Of the USA) for the next four years.

    It's a military dictatorship that doesn't like people getting in its way. They probably only allow photography at all because of the tourists and pro-junta marketing...

    The really clever ones struggle on sport usually. {Comment #513}

    I see. So that's how come sometimes contestant teams have more than one player available for the final... (I only see snippets of Eggheads).

  • Alianora La Canta21/02/2009 at 14:49

    Ah, but he never drove for Sauber. {Comment #517}

    True, but he's the sort of driver Peter Sauber would have liked had he still owned a team. Does that count?
