Here we are then, finally we have reached our first Free Practice Friday for about a month. I have already forgotten how to do the Digest, so I'm curious to know if I'll be able to get everything ready throughout today. Anyway, we'll be talking about F1 all day, but here are some of the topics we're already discussing:

  • The Ari vs Jean battle continued yesterday, with Jean writing to members and suggesting he wants to increase the transparency of the FIA. This is a constant source of contention so will no doubt go down well. Ari released his own manifesto, and sadly, it didn't seem to have quite as much oomph as the aforementioned candidate. Oh dear.
  • Kovalainen has said he isn't worried about the hints that he needs to try harder to retain his seat at McLaren, despite the fact that Rosberg has admitted he would love the chance to try his hand behind the silver car. Heikki doesn't have long left, then?
  • Meanwhile, the BMW boys have been thinking about the future, and Kubica admits he was informed about the quitting decision via email. Harsh. He's not too worried, and says now the summer break is over he can start looking around. Heidfeld said he was already in discussions with people, and that will just continue.

That'll do for now. Before you know it, it'll be time for Free Practice and we'll be in the live thread for each session. When there is no action, you can find us here in the daily. I'll see you in the comments.

I will get up, take my car to be signed off for the MOT now that I have chased my tail getting the niggles fixed, then play golf for a good 4hrs, then going for a meal with college buddies as a sort of send-off now we have our results. So I won't be here much and despite my being off work I still won't see FP live..

  • Alianora La Canta20/08/2009 at 23:36

In my defense, I did learn that Brawn look like changing engines next year unless the FIA decide to turn a blind eye to their own engine regulations (which to be fair they've done more than once in the past).

And that the leaving custom at Force India is for whoever is leaving to buy everyone else in their department a pint. I thought it was usually the other way round...

I have been preparing points graphs for F1 2009 with a view to creating blog posts out of them. Should be ready next week. I hope to do the same for IndyCar. I don't know if anyone else does them, I'm sure they exist somewhere but I don't know where.

If Luca could stumble ass-backward into some points, that would great. I think an F1 drivers career is incomplete without championship points, thus, I'm hoping Scott Speed gets the USF1 gig, but I doubt it.

that is cool. Minardi is always a fan favorite, which makes Luca's 1999 European GP so much more important.

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 00:36

Ahhhh, yes, there was that. :D Hmmm, but this might top it for me, after everything Luca's been through.

  • Alison21/08/2009 at 00:38

Luca's just hung on with Ferrari for so so long. I think it's such a shame he couldn't get a drive somewhere else and just hung on for them. Bless him, I really can't believe he's got in the car.

  • Pat W21/08/2009 at 00:39

On Friday I'll be playing at a golf course which is on a cliff top overlooking Lyme Bay, very excellent views of Portland and the coast all along here.

One of the holes has a tee at the top of a cliff and the hole at sea level. It is only 100yds or so in horizontal distance but the drop is 30 or 40 feet. Have only played it once before and the score was terrible, so I'm hoping for a good one.

It is nice isn't it? If MS had come back it would have gone back to how it was... I like feeling neutral about them. Luca needs to get at least one point. He'd have 5 already if the current system had been used when he last raced.

Getting his 4th place back 10 years after he lost it at the European Grand Prix would be poetic justice - and more!

  • Pat W21/08/2009 at 00:41

How do you play that? Do you just drop the ball and hope?

Pretty much! I had several attempts at it and got it completely wrong, before figuring out it is just a moderate hit with a 9 iron. I expect to score better than 14 on it this time...

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 00:46

This is Valencia, it can't happen.

And if Sutil takes Badoer out, any sympathy I had for Adrian after the Nurburgring and Monaco last year will vanish - very quickly.

  • Pat W21/08/2009 at 00:50

    Are Peugeot doing LMS races?

No but that wasn't known earlier in the year. He might have arranged to have this weekend and Monza taken off his 'reserve' schedule to provide for it, in which case Ferrari would have made other arrangements. Obviously they can just as easily change them back..

  • me21/08/2009 at 00:54

i think a big gap before valencia is a great idea. I cant believe i am looking forward to it! I need to see a heikki win, luca get a point and romain to do even worse than piquet :D

Why? He's a company man who got passed over for promotion. He deserves this gig.

  • Jeremy21/08/2009 at 00:56

    #notschumi

Maybe that was Ferrari's PR dept. idea all along?

  • me21/08/2009 at 00:57

    #notschumi

i'd rather badoer than schumi, but i'd rather gene than badoer and liuzzi over gene.

Got a thing for Nelson, or just dislike Flavio?

  • me21/08/2009 at 00:58

Why? He's a company man who got passed over for promotion. He deserves this gig.

i'd say he's a man who lacked ambition and instead settled for a cushy and lucrative testing number.

  • Joe in Fla21/08/2009 at 00:59

i'd say he's a man who lacked ambition and instead settled for a cushy and lucrative testing number.

Of all of us, who wouldn't take the Ferrari test driving gig?

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 00:59

i'd say he's a man who lacked ambition and instead settled for a cushy and lucrative testing number.

i guess he was interested in f1 and f1 alone. and no one else was gonna hire him in f1 by 2000.

  • Amy21/08/2009 at 00:59

    dislike flavio!

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 00:59

I have so little ambition I would work in the Ferrari garage.

True, but Kimi took himself out of the way...very convenient

  • Steven Roy21/08/2009 at 01:05

i'd say he's a man who lacked ambition and instead settled for a cushy and lucrative testing number.

Badoer has done nothing to justify an F1 drive since he won the F3000 championship. Ferrari bypassed him for Salo a decade ago so it is insane giving him a drive now.

  • Paul21/08/2009 at 01:05

True, but Kimi took himself out of the way...very convenient

    He' good like that. (kimi)

  • Steven Roy21/08/2009 at 01:06

Wurz was a decent race driver in th first place

  • Joe in Fla21/08/2009 at 01:07

Yeah, in 2005 if his teammate had been on his tail he might not have been shuffled off to NASCAR

  • Jeremy21/08/2009 at 01:12

if I am right this weekend we will have first French driver in Renault since Tambay (1985) and first Italian in Ferrari since Nicola Larini in 1994

if I am right this weekend we will have first French driver in Renault since Tambay (1985) and first Italian in Ferrari since Nicola Larini in 1994

And those were resounding successes weren't they?

Tambay didn't have high praise for that Renault, that's for sure. And the 1994 Ferrari was awful :(

  • F1Wolf21/08/2009 at 07:14

And those were resounding successes weren't they?

and what did Renault do after 1985 season ? they pulled out

  • Lady Snowcat21/08/2009 at 07:14

I have already booked McLaren wins, but you can have Ferrari 2-3s, or perhaps 3-4s if we can get Webber into second.

It's nice when people are rooting for Heikki ....

    So Heikki 1st, Kimi 2nd....

I'd prefer the other way round personally....

  • F1Wolf21/08/2009 at 07:16

It's nice when people are rooting for Heikki ....

    especially Heikki himself:

comment from Heikki Kovalainen "If Lewis goes and wins the race, I should be finishing a bit ahead of him"

  • F1Wolf21/08/2009 at 07:17

comment from Heikki Kovalainen "If Lewis goes and wins the race, I should be finishing a bit ahead of him"

    how is everyone?

the heat here in spain is stupidly high.. i may melt. our electricity went off in the early hours of the morning and we all felt like we were cooking.

however i suppose heat in spain means heat in Valencia.. which means good for Brawn?

I think this was a mouse issue. A sound card would solve certain other problems I'm having though.

At this rate I think I'm looking at a new computer (my current one also reboots randomly, especially when playing certain games, and has already corrupted one operating system to the point where it wouldn't boot into it...) The problem is I can't afford it!

Which bit? The keyboard is from 1998. The mouse is from 2005. The case is from 2004, but it has a motherboard from 2007 in it. The CPU on that motherboard is from 2005 but the RAM is from 2007. One hard drive is three months old (the main one) and the other (the backup) dates from 2000. The sound card came with the motherboard, but the speakers are from 2002. The monitor is from 2003. The network card for the internet is from 2000, the docking cradle which has been identified as one source of random reboots is from 2007 and the relatively stable Bluetooth connection is from 2008.

In case you're wondering, the computer was originally made out of bits and therefore never had a warranty.

    You cold call the umpire some nasty things… {Comment #358}

You could - but with the umpire the same nationality as the players, he could say some nastier things back (having had more thinking time to be creative) and you couldn't complain because of the same rule!

I'm sure there are programs that can capture a flash based stream but I don't know their names.

What about finding a torrent of what you've missed? Better quality will likely be your reward.

Unfortunately the local theatre group here perform in german, and i don't like there chances at recreating the sport I plan on recording over the weekend. so I'm just looking for something free to record it off justin.tv i found a plug in thingy that works with other sites, just not justin. sigh... think i'll call the local theatre..

    Hey mate.

    Badoer was painfully slow.

So I see. Well, he does need time to bed in. I'll be happy if he's on the pace by Monza - assuming he's still in the seat by then.

I also heard that Mr Whitmarsh has more or less stated that Alonso's Maranello-bound, with Ferrari trying their best to deny it (and failing to convince me).

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 14:46

    Alonso tried to hurt Nicky.

The word in F1 circles is that Force India driver Giancarlo Fisichella is hoping to land a test drive with Ferrari next year.

    And to add to that,

One rumour that has begun to circulate is that Prodrive might make a bid to buy Mallya out of [Force India]. This would enable the Brackley team to use Mercedes-Benz engines, which is what it wishes to do.

So the G is gone in AGR?

Hmmm. Not sure how it affects Franck at this point - if it won't stop Danica from moving to Ganassi, I'm guessing Franck will still be in A(G)R next season.

  • rowley21/08/2009 at 15:01

I dunno, I think that's just a bunch of speculation at this point. I give more credence to the Fisi story.

Force India is still part owned by the Dutch Mol family, and they will be happy to sell their share. At least that's the story in the Netherlands.

  • Nick21/08/2009 at 15:03

Have just read that Andretti is taking over full control of AGR. Do we know if this is good or bad news for Franck?

It might be good for him, Andretti is a racer and if he sees something in franck he might be prepared to give him a bigger go.

He isnt a big name in the states so he will have to do well this weekend to attract sponsors or bring a bucket load of cash with him

Alonso doesn't show up for the autographing session for his home race? Was their debrief THAT long?

They are still allowed to change him, up until qualifying

They might have to. Surely you get a ban for speeding so extensively

If they swap him before he's done an actual race does he count as one of their drivers for the season?

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 16:06

I think 3 per car per year. I don't know if you can have 3 in each car.

  • Alex Andronov21/08/2009 at 16:11

Just travelling in to London. Needed to go to London Bridge got to the train station, but the Victoria train was delayed and so by accident I got on that instead. From the same platform it goes in entirely the opposite direction.

Luckily the place that they branch off is after the next station so I manger to change in time - phew.

  • Alex Andronov21/08/2009 at 16:15

why don't they tell us what those circumstances were?

    this really annoys me.

They complain that people just make things up on the Internet - we do too - but is it any surprise when they won't tell us the answers to these simple questions.

  • Alex Andronov21/08/2009 at 16:16

    Hows Waterloo East treating you?

not that far it was west norwood

  • Alex Andronov21/08/2009 at 16:17

    Something bad's going to happen.

  • Journeyer21/08/2009 at 16:17

why don't they tell us what those circumstances were?

When Rosberg skipped on us in Sepang, they said it was due to a long debrief. I'm guessing that those in the line were informed, but sadly, it's not announced publicly.

  • Nick21/08/2009 at 16:18

not that far it was west norwood

I thought you were at London Bridge. It is a very crazy station!

  • Alex Andronov21/08/2009 at 16:22

I thought you were at London Bridge. It is a very crazy station!

Reading back my comment I can see why. My station is totally mad. We have two platforms. One which goes East and the other one goes East and West. You may be thinking - well maybe because of North / South etc. No. One platform goes to London Bridge. The other one goes to London Victoria and London Bridge. Madness.

  • Alex Andronov21/08/2009 at 16:23

    Does anyone know a method for saving something you watch on justin.tv? {Comment #372}

ScreenToaster} saves anything your screen is showing, but there are two things I should warn you about:

    1) It's tricky to set up

    2) I'm not sure how strict they are with copyrighted content - and being an online service, it would be relatively easy for them to find out if you did something dodgy with the facility.

Alternatives are available, but I don't know what they're like.

    What’s this from Joe Saward?

The word in F1 circles is that Force India driver Giancarlo Fisichella is hoping to land a test drive with Ferrari next year.

    Interesting, that. {Comment #413}

It is interesting - though Giancarlo has said that Ferrari haven't contacted him yet. He may have to wait for his Ferrari dream to be realised...

    Good choice of cars

I should say they are Audi R10s?

  • Alianora La Canta21/08/2009 at 19:48

    One rumour that has begun to circulate is that Prodrive might make a bid to buy Mallya out of [Force India]. This would enable the Brackley team to use Mercedes-Benz engines, which is what it wishes to do. {Comment #415}

David Richards will be lucky - there's four years of contract left after this one. It will be rather expensive, especially since last I heard he was still waiting for enough backers to attempt an entry...

  • RG21/08/2009 at 19:48

Same here. Angels and Demons is one of my favourite books in general although I have not seen the film. I did like the Da Vinci Code film just as much as the book mind you, in a little minority perhaps :P

Angels and Demons on the silver screen surely can't be as wildly bleh as Yes Man though, at least.

How is the most interesting news Fisi!

    Force India could go bust and let prodrive in, and your worried about an aging Itallian! {Comment #420}

Possibly because it's the most likely to be true. Force India could theoretically go bust if debts are mounting, but it is entirely possible that Vijay could be doing an EJ and simply waiting until the last possible moment to pay. It might not be the sort of thing an improving team usually does in F1, but there's a long and not particularly honourable tradition of it at Jordan/Midland/Spyker.

Prodrive to Force India makes little sense because it would cost less for Prodrive to have Cosworth engines in the first instance and Brawn's reduced budget means that there's a good chance the Mercedes stuff will be available in 2011 when the team is more established and can afford it more easily. The advantages of buying Mercedes are clear, but not if Prodrive destroys itself as a result of acquiring them. After all, if Force India did find itself on the brink of going bust, the last thing a savvy entrepreneur like David will want to do is follow suit...

The Fisi item, on the other hand, has almost certainly happened, even though according to him Ferrari haven't contacted him yet. I might think it more likely that he gets a race drive with FIF1 or a new team, but if that doesn't happen, I could certainly envisage him being happy in a Ferrari test seat.

Congratulations, Luca, you have created a new F1 record for the highest number of penalties issued to one driver (for any offence or combination of offences) in one weekend.

    Alonso doesn’t show up for the autographing session for his home race? Was their debrief THAT long? {Comment #480}

    Exactly. How odd.

  • Alianora La Canta21/08/2009 at 20:39

    They are still allowed to change him, up until qualifying {Comment #482}

If Luca falls ill, gets banned or gets sacked, yes. Either of the latter two is possible.

  • Alianora La Canta21/08/2009 at 20:41

    If they swap him before he’s done an actual race does he count as one of their drivers for the season? {Comment #487}

Yes. Ferrari have used three drivers thus far, so using a fourth driver would rule Michael out for the rest of the year unless there was force majuere.

  • Alianora La Canta21/08/2009 at 20:43

    I think 3 per car per year. I don’t know if you can have 3 in each car. {Comment #493}

The current limit is 4 per team, unless a team is absolutely forced to use a fifth driver through force majuere. It changed a few years back.

Because that's what the Steward's Report is for.

Why hasn't the Steward's Report been released for any race so far this year, despite the promises? Because, I guess, the FIA would rather we did not reason why it acts as it does.

I think on Autosport they said it was because he was used to the 100km/h speed limit from testing.

  • Alianora La Canta21/08/2009 at 21:06

    Hehe, only Alianora would mention copyright when talking about recording something that already violates copyright. {Comment #636}

I thought the warning needed to be clearly made because unlike software that sits on your computer and records stuff on your screen, the ScreenToaster sticks everything through its own servers before downloading the file to your computer. This is why it works (at least in theory) on all modern multimedia-capable browsers irrespective of platform - but it also means that if the copyright owner complains, a simple video cross-reference would pull up everyone who'd used the service to copy that particular thing. Search engines are now capable of that (albeit to a limited extent).

I just don't want to see you commenting from inside a court room...

    Back in Badeor’s day, was there any pit lane speed limit? {Comment #707}

At the start, I don't think there was. By the end, the limit was 60kp/h (imposed somewhere between Monaco 1994 and the start of 1995), but after a decade of testing at 100kp/h he's clearly forgotten that.

I can't wait to see what he does if/when the speed limit is increased to 80kp/h for qualifying and the race (as the stewards have the discretionary power to do following a circuit condition report tomorrow morning).

  • Jon Waldock21/08/2009 at 21:11

ah-ha. thank you. he'll be fine then.

    mmmm, however;

Except in the race, any driver who exceeds the limit will be fined €200 for each km/h above the limit (this may be increased in the case of a second offence in the same Event).

so he may find his FP3 gets a little more expensive

  • Alianora La Canta21/08/2009 at 21:12

And then I discover that the stewards lost that right, replaced with a straight 100kp/h limit for qualifying and the race. Thank you, Jon, and one day I might keep up with the regulations...

I'm not so sure. The FIA have already given up on fines and moved to reprimands. Do it again and I think he'll be sent to the back of the grid or possibly barred from the rest of the weekend. Those may even amount to the same thing if Ferrari are annoyed enough.

I'm not so sure. The FIA have already given up on fines and moved to reprimands. Do it again and I think he'll be sent to the back of the grid or possibly barred from the rest of the weekend. Those may even amount to the same thing if Ferrari are annoyed enough.

I reckon we'll see a grid penalty next time

    And this rule;

30.13 If a driver has serious mechanical difficulties he must leave the track as soon as it is safe to do so.

would have been part of the FIA’s argument against renault

Renault would argue that 3 out of 4 wheels on the car is not really a serious mechanical difficulty. You bring the car back to the pit, throw on a new tyre and the probem is gone. There is nothing different between this and a flat tyre or a sherdded tyre.

How does a driver comply with this ruling in the event of a massive brake failure? I guess is is how that grid drop penality at the next race was created for :D .

No worries. I like what you're trying to do with the shot. Night time pictures are tricky, it's usually a good idea to bracket your exposures and then combine the images if necessary. If you spot meter off the towers then they should be correctly exposed, but everything else will be darker.

I'd also reduce the flash power down a bit and/or adjust the colour of the flash to match the ambient a bit more.

Sadly, my skills are nascient and under fed. I want to take some classes

I haven't posted my Autosport 2009 pics ever, they were pretty poor. Although my mate saw a different Autosport. Don't even know if he took any pics of the cars, he was busy asking the models to pose for him.

I've seen some pretty rough pics there.

A dirty young Jedi you mean!

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:03

In fact, they'd be quite offended if you didn't snap at those itty bitty shorts and tings

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:03

A dirty young Jedi you mean!

    That too, but mostly wise

  • Alison22/08/2009 at 00:03

Err, don't getcha. What's one of them, then?

    Hello

It's like a long paragraph about yourself you write for applications for university usually. Mine isn't exactly like that. It's an application for an extra course I want to do as part of my degree, it's a right pain.

I hate doing those things. I don't think the personal statement on my CV has changed in years

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:05

    A cover letter

Get usedto it, every job application wants one with your CV

A bad one misses you an interview

    Think Keywords

  • Alison22/08/2009 at 00:05

    A cover letter

Hmmmm but not a letter. It's just how we do things in Britain.

With some grammar and stuff wrapped around it :)

Yeah, it's just doing this one is giving me nightmares about when I was making my proper uni application. It's an awful experience. Hours wasted drafting and redrafting. I mean does anyone really care what I've learned from my work experience?

  • Steven Roy22/08/2009 at 00:07

    I know but that's what they're called

A cover letter is different to a personal statement. The personal statement is part of the CV and is generic where the cover letter is specific to the job you are applying for

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:08

Yeah, it's just doing this one is giving me nightmares about when I was making my proper uni application. It's an awful experience. Hours wasted drafting and redrafting. I mean does anyone really care what I've learned from my work experience?

    You'd be suprised

What you need to learn it how to flower that up into nonsense they want to hear.

It's ridiculous but it'll get you far. It takes a lot of practice

What do you need to say?

  • Steven Roy22/08/2009 at 00:08

I would be surprised if Uni did but in the real world that could be more important than academic qualifications. Maybe not in your field but generally.

    Oh, ok

    It get's worse then :)

  • Alison22/08/2009 at 00:09

With these applications, other than your exam results, the only information they get about you, your background, why you want to do the course, why your suitable, how you've shown your commitment etc etc has to go in this statement. It's heavily character limited.

  • Steven Roy22/08/2009 at 00:10

    It get's worse then :)

It is worse than a cover letter. In the end I got someone else to write mine for me.

  • startledbunny22/08/2009 at 00:10

    How long have you got?

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:10

What course is it and what is your main subject?

  • Alison22/08/2009 at 00:11

It's ridiculous but it'll get you far. It takes a lot of practice

What do you need to say?

Yeah. I can do it. I'm just not in the mood. I'm somehow trying to explain how I have a passion for economics and maths. Even though I haven't actually studied the subjects since I left school 3 years ago. I think lack of facts is what's holding me back at the moment rather than flowers :P

The important thing about all these things is thatthey only ever know what you tell them so you have to pick out the bits that make what you did sound good and taught you a lot.

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:13

    Flowering up Economics and Maths?

    Yeah, you're screwed ;)

Seriously, if you aren't in the right frame of mind, it's better to set some time aside tomorrow, sounds like it's important

  • startledbunny22/08/2009 at 00:14

If you've got a few days to write this, then get the basics down, and leave it for a while. Come back to it the next day with a fresh perspective. Sometimes forcing yourself to write something in a short space of time doesn't produce the best results.

  • Steven Roy22/08/2009 at 00:14

Find someone who you trust that knows and understands what you have done and talk it through with them. It will make it a lot easier than doing it yourself.

  • Alison22/08/2009 at 00:15

    How long have you got?

    3000 characters with spaces.

I'm a medical student, I'm applying to do a year long course in Economics and Maths for which you'd join final year degree students and be awarded a degree for successful completion (which seems like a sneaky cheat to me but hey)

  • Bassano Clapper22/08/2009 at 00:15

    Eeek!

I'm not, I'll go back to my medical degree and complete that after the year. I can do anything really but, shocking as it might be, I do really like maths!

I understand liking maths. I was keen on it myself for a while. Just seems an unusual path.

I did further maths at school. I'd be qualified for the degree course as a school leaver, I just don't really have any relevant work experience and don't really know where I can go find any to write about.

Maybe it helps, especially with the NHS.

If you wanted to go into anything public health oriented or NHS management, yeah that'd be a really useful skills base.
