It's Thursday once more, but it should be a better day for me as I'm off work and enjoying a week at home. We'll see though. Let me know how your Thursday goes, and check in with the comments often, so we know it's going okay. Some of the actual F1 topics we're talking about:

  • Mr C has decided that yesterday's F1 Big Picture of a 2008 McLaren actually seems a little bit on the hideous side to him. I am not impressed. This year's cars are fugly and they will not grow on me. I fear I am the only one left that thinks so.
  • I released the F1 Digest preview podcast for this weekend's race, and there are some interesting quotes in there. Badoer is simply hoping to finish the race, whilst Grosjean thinks that being the reserve driver has helped him ahead of getting behind the wheel in anger for the first time. Those new boys, eh?
  • Finally, in non-plugtastic news, it was hyped up beyond belief yesterday, but the big reveal simply proved that YouTube will be involved in F1 next year, sponsoring USF1. It is good to get a big name on board, that can potentially bring big bucks and big awareness, but I'm not convinced YouTube are the right fit. It's just a little bit NASCAR for my tastes.

That'll do it for now, I reckon. There'll probably be more news out today, as we get nearer and nearer to our first Free Practice action in weeks. I'll see you in the comments.

Am I allowed to agree with Mr C in saying the old cars were ugly?

  • Lukeh19/08/2009 at 23:03

Poor Christine. I want to make her feel better and say that this years cars are ugly but nope. I love them. They're lovely! OK maybe not the rear wing but the rest rocks, and that Mclaren has about 15 balconies for the Mclaren team to watch from on the front wing!

I still think this years cars are ugly. They have improved as they have devloped over the season but they are still unnecessatily ugly.

I still find the wing a little bit strange? ugly? uncomfortable to the eyes?. But after seeing that 2008 McLaren I'm convinced more than ever of the beauty of the clean and slim bodywork off this year's cars.

ok. i am considering how the header bar will work in spc 3.0 / mfc 1.0. e.g. the bit on the homepage that has webber in it.

this involves trawling as many different homepages as feasibly possible, across as many genres as possible, whilst taking the best bits of anything i find.

the homepage header is likely the first bit you see on any web page, therefore it has to have impact, provide some basic navigation and most importantly of all - load very fast.

once a basic template is completed, i'll discuss with christine and upload to the playground. probably sometime next week. all of this should've been done by monday last and i'm only just starting.

  • Bassano Clapper19/08/2009 at 23:38

#IRL news: The entry list for Sonoma has been released.

    From Indy Racing Revolution:

As expected, Franck Montagny will drive the No. 25 for Andretti Green Racing in his IndyCar Series debut, while Nelson Philippe will make his first start since Indy in Conquest Racing's No. 34. Milka Duno gets Dreyer and Reinbold's No. 23 again this weekend, and over in Newman/Haas/Lanigan's No. 06, Oriol Servia will stay there for at least one more race.

    PDF of the entry list.

Yeah. He missed the previous race, Mid-Ohio, because his father died.

    No Paul Tracy though..

  • Alison20/08/2009 at 00:04

Hahaha you can travel without your passport if you have to. It's pretty unfortunate it's Spain they're going to, they're the most uptight european country about passports because of all the trouble they've had with ETA

  • RG20/08/2009 at 00:05

Yeah. He missed the previous race, Mid-Ohio, because his father died.

I read about that somewhere. Dunno where.

at the contrary, staying in front of a brilliant white screen all day harms more your eyes than a careful choice of dark colours (provided that you use the right contrast between them)

hence why doohickey isn't pure white. more like off-white.

The plugging of Qik has encouraged people to go outside though ;)

sleeping is not necessary. I survived my grade studies at the university and I can assure it to you. in the worst case, we'll just evolve into some sidepodborgs like amy...

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 00:53

It's a sneaky ploy. One person goes outside but everyone else stays on the doohickey to discuss it.

Is Youtube actually going to sponsor USF1, or just it's founder?

Also, I really hope USF1 don't have some stars-and-stripes paint scheme.

  • Paul20/08/2009 at 01:15

You could argue that any case which uses DNA evidence against you could be fabricated though?

You could. But it's a bit like saying "it wasn't me downloading that music, someone could have broken into my house and done it"

It's about time some doubt was cast on DNA evidence though. People are a bit too easily convinced, what with all these CSI shows etc.

maybe. but this could also be a boost for cheaper/faster sequencing of the full genome of a person, which you can't falsify in that way

Very true, although I think that requires a little more than a few cells they sometimes use for evidence. Fast full sequencing will come, it's just a matter of processing power really.

  • guille230620/08/2009 at 01:19

in the traditional way, yes. you need a bigger sample to avoid replication errors. but there are some ideas of reading DNA strands directly with some nanotechnological device, one base at a time. they are nice shiny ideas that attract founding but nobody knows if they'll work for sure, but they are there...

Yes and meanwhile everyone spends more on defense. Nano tech is an amazing branch of science

I won't contradict you, I believe in Enzo's words: 'a winning car is a beautiful car'. But still, it looks with too many wings and appendages and seems too 'dirty' compared to 2009 cars.

don't worry, much of the money for nanotech comes from defense. there are always creative ways to get some funding from DARPA or the DOD, and they know that without funding the basic science they won't get the final applications...

  • Nick20/08/2009 at 01:33

What do you think of ground-effect cars, with almost no wing?

They were great too, but that mclaren just says 'fast' to me. I know a lot of people hated all the appendages and i understand that.

    I loved them.

there aren't also some safety concerns? if some problem reduces the ground affect on the car (like a hole in the skirts) the driver won't notice it until he can't turn at the next corner

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 02:05

From memory they got quite worried about the dodgem-car racing that was going on.

The excuse was safety because there were skirts at the bottom of the sidepod that seasled to the road and created massive downforce but sometimes they would stick and the driver would turn into a corner and discover he had a fraction of the grip he expected. The rules had to be modified to eiliminate that.

The real reason was that Bernie had set up FOCA and all the British teams sided with him while Balestre and the FIA had Ferrari, Renault etc who were all trying to develop turbos and regardless how much more power they developed they couldn't cope with the ground effect cars so the FIA banned grounf eggect and turbo was king.

  • Paul20/08/2009 at 02:05

there aren't also some safety concerns? if some problem reduces the ground affect on the car (like a hole in the skirts) the driver won't notice it until he can't turn at the next corner

That was true. I'm sure the problem would be well and truely overcome though. I think some road cars (McLaren F1?) were designed with ground effect.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 02:05

    What happened to that!

That was true. I'm sure the problem would be well and truely overcome though. I think some road cars (McLaren F1?) were designed with ground effect.

Yeah, sure. But playing with massive amounts of down-force that can suddenly disappear will be always a safety concern. I would rather prefer low down-force cars, with small wings and a flat bottom.

(that's on the safety side. As an F1 fan I'd love to see unrestricted aero/mechanical grip and engineers fighting to develop the fastest car)

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 02:19

As an F1 fan I'd love to see unrestricted aero/mechanical grip and engineers fighting to develop the fastest car)

It was quite clear at that time that they had to somehow limit performance. Drivers were nowhere near as fit as now and the performance gains were happening so fast that there bodies no longer had time to adjust to them. Imagine they had left some form of ground effect on the car and let the turbos develop too. There would be no way a driver could control them. When turbos were banned the best ofthem had 1500 bhp for qualifying. Imagine another 20 years worth of development on that and ground effect and all the other advances that have happened.

especially when i bought the F1 jacket - my goodness, that was crazy-expensive. but after that, i deemed my collection complete. :D well, there is still the post-retirement-spec Schumi cap, but that's impossible to buy - and with no Schumi comeback, it seems it'll stay that way.

Is Youtube actually going to sponsor USF1, or just it’s founder?

I get the feeling that Google might be the one who is doing the advertising. I go into into a blog post.

2 new teams ? would not that mean more than 26 cars that the regs published yesterday allow ?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/08/2009 at 06:08

Finally, in non-plugtastic news, it was hyped up beyond belief yesterday, but the big reveal simply proved that YouTube will be involved in F1 next year, sponsoring USF1. It is good to get a big name on board, that can potentially bring big bucks and big awareness, but I'm not convinced YouTube are the right fit. It's just a little bit NASCAR for my tastes.

    Guys,

I don't know if you have discussed this already, but does this mean there will be lots more official F1 videos on YouTube like there are for MotoGP and NASCAR?

It must be nice to follow a motorsports series which the live timing actually works, that the tickets are affordable, that the sport and teams work together with their sponsors to reward the fans that follows them, that cares and embraces its' history, that gives sponsors incentives to say in the sport through thick and thin, that everyone in the sport is accessible, ect.

In the interest of balance since this is a open wheel blog... NASCAR smells.

The road races in NASCAR are fun - think BTCC but bigger and with fuel and tyre strategies...

  • Amy20/08/2009 at 06:31

as i reread The Pits i come across a bit that makes me want to set the book on fire (along with all the others). The idea that people in my part of the world like f1 because it makes them feel more european and thus more sophisticated than they actually are. Ugh. I hate you beverley turner.

  • Dan Brunell20/08/2009 at 06:33

Absolutely agree. It's almost like how the Overtaking Working Group proved to be an oxymoron for Formula One. Big effort, little gained.

Actually its' funny, I traveling around the state the last week. A friend of mine who follows NASCAR were talking. He was ripping on Danica about being all show and no results. I countered "This is from a racing series where Dale Earnhardt Jr. has probably the best car on the field on name alone."

    He about decked me.

The road races in NASCAR are fun - think BTCC but bigger and with fuel and tyre strategies...

They really need to bring more road races to NASCAR. NASCAR at Road Atlanta, Road America, and maybe Portland would be interesting. They need to bring Montreal into the Cup series. I can watch anything, even a snails race if its' on the Isle de Notre Dame.

  • Dan Brunell20/08/2009 at 06:47

You could make that argument about Association Football over here in America. Many snobby self-righteous parents put their kids into soccer because it is "a more sophisticated and violent free sport that teaches fair play and makes the kids more cosmopolitan towards the greater world" as my yuppie sister would say. (Apparently, she has never seen an Old Firm derby match.)

At least here in the states, most of the F1 fans I know fall into four groups.

    - Old school CanAm and CART who migrated to F1 when those series went to shreds. (Like me, I hated the IRL and by the time 1999 came along, CART was junk, so I got back into F1.)

-People who remember when America actually had a decent race and racers in the series and have followed it since.

    - Gearheads who love cars like Ferrari's and other super cars who get into it because of that.

    - Extreme hard core racing fans who will watch everything on speed channel. (guilty.)

  • F1Wolf20/08/2009 at 07:01

In all seriousness, why two teams? Are they expecting another team to go by the end of the season?

I think the reason is hidden somewhere here:

Both Prodrive and Epsilon are believed to have access to the money needed to run a team but this is dependent on being granted entries, so they are both stuck in a chicken and egg situation with the FIA wanting suitable guarantees and potential sponsors wanting the security of knowing that they are buying into a franchise.

  • Jon Waldock20/08/2009 at 07:01

well that has been clear since the moment they decided to ban refuelling :-)

I'm all up for change, i'll be interested to see if it changes it for the better (which would be a huuuuge shock), i'll give it a year (probably less) and see if they make it better, and when it turns out they dont, then i shall join the critic bandwaggon :D

I did post some little cars - I didn't think they would break the thing

  • Christine20/08/2009 at 10:27

I am currently working from home for the first time since the weekend. This is giving me a good chance to test out Bassano's handiwork. And very good it is too!

I am cleaning! It is so exciting in Sidepodcastworld, isn't it?

  • Pat W20/08/2009 at 10:27

The excuse was safety because there were skirts at the bottom of the sidepod that seasled to the road and created massive downforce but sometimes they would stick and the driver would turn into a corner and discover he had a fraction of the grip he expected. The rules had to be modified to eiliminate that.

I agree with the ban, the skirts were dangerous. But you don't need them to have ground effect.

  • Pat W20/08/2009 at 10:29

I'd like to see cars with small wings and a mandated underfloor design featuring twin tunnels as we saw in CART from about a decade ago.

  • Pat W20/08/2009 at 10:29

FIt's just a little bit NASCAR for my tastes.

I know that this might get stones thrown at me, but if F1 started treating its' fans (and sponsors) like NASCAR does, then I say bring it.

Hear hear, all the best stuff from F1 is stolen from NASCAR!

I agree, there is no shame in F1 stealing good ideas from elsewhere if they will work well for it.

  • Pat W20/08/2009 at 10:36

    Oh, a serious clean!

As I'm sure you now by now I am exceptionally good at procrastinating. It helps to have a massive backlog of other things to do, I think the first thing to do today is eat something and have a cup of tea. I need to go out later to find some number plate screws and a rubber grip for the brake pedal, which means going all the way to Yeovil...

Funnily enough I tend to write in either black-on-sky-blue or dark-orange-on-lighter-orange. Nobody else I know can understand how I can see what I'm typing, but the low contrast seems to help me get ideas in a way that the high-contrast combos don't.

Wasn't the environmental initiative last year? Or are we about to learn that the British Prime Minister is personally funding the team next year?

Fair play to Sir Frank it seems; he's a dude that knows his food.

    From JA:

Alonso says that Nelson Piquet will have a future in F1 "because he has the talent". Problem was on the human relations side

Piquet has the talent? Sure, he had it in GP2. But I've seen no evidence of it whatsoever in F1.

  • Dan Brunell20/08/2009 at 16:21

    Good afternoon everybody.

Sorry I've been away from the comments lately, I been out and about putting stories together our chamber magazine the last few weeks. On Friday, I was at PACCAR (who make the Kenworth, Peterbilt, and DAF line of heavy trucks) taking a look through the R&D department where I saw my first CFD computer and a demostration of it (really freaking awesome.) Also, we talked about their different applications of green technologies on the various trucks they have.

That in contrast with Tuseday where I nearly got stuck in a mud flat in Puget Sound while trying to take photos of oyster and clam beds.

All and all, I am happy F1 is back... even if it is Valencia.

  • Amy20/08/2009 at 16:21

Only the exit, i guess they might have demolished the building, if its just a big shed their seems no reason to have it. I think it was used for the americas cup teams, but that race isnt going back there

Seems like the E3 trailer let on more than we were led to believe. It's always too good to be true with Gran Turismo to be honest.

Good point. The damage on the trailer looked a lot more comprehensive.

None of that is gameplayt hough, it's all CG. Polyphony themselves said it I believe.

There's the very high possibility that it's coming out this year.

You know if they didn't concentrate on having so many cars in it they might be able to do stuff like model the damage better?

Very good point. Forza 3 won't have that many but they've improved the graphics, physics and damage model greatly. Can't wait for it.

The claim "The Real Driving Simulator" can't really be justified if the cars don't actually break. So far it's just been dodgems.

Very true, but GT5 is going for realism too isn't it? The driving physics are good but it's useless if you can just pingpong off the walls without penalty...

    Evening sidepodpeeps.

If there are any U2 fans Radio Clyde is playing tonight's gig from the Don Valley stadium. I have no idea why a Glasgow radio station is covering a gig in Sheffield when U2 were in Glasgow on Tuesday night. It starts at 9pm but they are doing interviews and the like first. Unfortunately it is geolocked so you have to be in the UK.

I doubt it. Even if it was ready i dont think sony would canibalise its sales of gt psp in the run up to the holidays.

The release of the PS3 Slim will make it very unlikely it will come out soon as that will boost sales on its own and they will want to use GT for another sales boost in the future.

I am all for opening things up. If someone can build a car to the regs let them race. Why should the likes of Force India be guaranteed to race at every GP until they decide to leave? Make people compete for their place on the grid.

The cars at the moment is really close. I suspect if teams werent guarenteed their place on the grid they would get less cash from sponsors, have less to spend and therefore we would see a huge gap between the top 3-4 teams and everyone else

Clearly there are a lot of new teams who want to come in though so they should be given the chance to put up or shut up. A place on an F1 grid should be earned not bought.

Maybe have teams qualify before the season starts and give them a place for the season then?

I cant see how teams can survive if they dont know they are on the grid. To use a foot ball example it would be like kicking the team which lost by the most goals out of the premiership each week, and replacing it with the championship team who won by the most

  • Nick20/08/2009 at 19:54

It used to happen. There were times in the 80s where 39 cars entered for a race where only 30 were allowed to run in qualifying and 26 to race. What happened was something like 22 places went to the top 11 teams. The other 17 cars ran in one prequalifying session at supid o'clock on a Friday morning. The fastest 8 went into qualifying and the rest went home. At the halfway point in the season the top 11 teams in the points got the automatic slots and those below had to go through the pre-qualifying. I am sure the numbers are not right but the procedure is.

That is how Jordan got in. For the first half of the first season they had to pre-qualify to be allowed into qualifying even though they were scoring points. At the halfway re-shuffle they got an automatic slot for the second half of the season.

  • Nick20/08/2009 at 20:10

Arent the teams to big now? the costs must be much higher if you want to compete, and the tightness in employment law would make it very difficult to opperate.

Its a good principle, but i cant see it working in modern F1

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 20:26

Arent the teams to big now? the costs must be much higher if you want to compete, and the tightness in employment law would make it very difficult to opperate.

The costs are higher and the teams are bigger but if big established teams can't compete with new smaller teams that is their problem. I get really fed up watching teams race for year after year with no progress and in some cases with no intention of trying to make the front of the grid. There are serious teams like Prodtive and Epsilon Euskadi who want to come in and compete but their path is blocked by the old boys club that is happy to have Force India prop up the back of the grid in perpetuity and have Toyota blow billions going nowhere. F1 is supposed to be about being the best so lets make people prove they deserve to race.

For anyone interested AUTOSPORT today announced the extent of Schumacher's injuries from his motor bike accident that stopped his comeback. They were

A serious injury to the 7th verterbra of the neck

A fracture of the 1st left rib

A fracture at the base of the skull the size of a thumbnail - but in the place that supports the whole weight of the skull

A hairline fracture to the left side of the skull.

Some damage to one of the two main arteries to the brain

All in all a lot more serious than was ever admitted.

    Circuit Length. 3.3 miles

Time run: 48 minutes 5 seconds

    Calories burned: 396

Treadmill Speed: between 4 and 4.2mph

You can't change it while running but there's a lever you can pull at the front which lets you change the elevation.

There should be a program which you can hook up to a treadmill that simulates running race tracks actively changes the gradient and speed depending on where you are on the map.

Now he has kidnapped me and is driving me round listening to Bono!

    NO!! NOT BONO!!!

  • RG20/08/2009 at 21:42

    Help!

There is nothing wrong with listening to U2, reallly loud.

I''m doing it like right now.

  • Chris20/08/2009 at 21:43

Now he has kidnapped me and is driving me round listening to Bono!

Kidnap AND torture? That's not good...

  • Dan Brunell20/08/2009 at 21:43

    Help!

The best thing to do in an abduction is to fight you attacker and make as much noise as possible to scare him and alert the people around him...

    Be strong Christine..

  • Scott Woodwiss20/08/2009 at 21:43

    Help!

    Oh noes!

Mr C - don't make me come running after you at 42mph!

  • Christine20/08/2009 at 21:43

He can't be that desperate to listen to U2 that badly, surely?!

He was an uber fan back when they were good. And he does like live stuff. Being with me has probably deprived him of gig opportunities.

  • Lukeh20/08/2009 at 21:44

He was an uber fan back when they were good.

Phew, thats OK then,. Go Mr C!!

    ...what?

    ;)

  • Christine20/08/2009 at 21:45

    Hehehehehehe.

    I like this Mr C.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 21:45

It is an awesome concert. I have it on my PC but at a considerate volume. Remember his tinitus

  • Christine20/08/2009 at 21:46

It isn't crazy loud but got the bass turned up.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 21:47

    You have to do that.

  • Lukeh20/08/2009 at 21:47

  • Scott Woodwiss20/08/2009 at 21:48

Is Mr C trying to get down with the kids again? Wiv his bangin stereo for his choons?

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 21:48

U2 have been on for nearly 2 hours so I am sure he can't use that an excuse to keep Christine outside for much longer.

  • Nick20/08/2009 at 21:49

    Has MrC cracked?

Try changing the music and see what happens ;)

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 21:49

Sounds like they have Desmond Tutu on with them

  • RG20/08/2009 at 21:50

Try changing the music and see what happens ;)

    I suspect he's driving. With a car.

    Won't end pretty.

You sure he's not driving round shouting "BLACK!" like that guy out of the Fast Show? :D

  • RG20/08/2009 at 21:51

    Woohoo! A song I know!

You'll be singing it in about 50 seconds.

In that case I will hum to myself.

Actually, I just found an old Undertones concert from 1980 on YouTube. Close enough.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 21:54

Actually, I just found an old Undertones concert from 1980 on YouTube. Close enough.

Bono did say it was going all round the world on the internet but I have no idea who is covering it elsewhere

  • Christine20/08/2009 at 21:55

    Qik?

Hehe. You wouldn't want to hear Mr C singing, trust me.

It was One now its mysterious ways. I know this one too. Who knew I knew so many U2 songs?

  • Alianora La Canta20/08/2009 at 22:00

    It used to happen. There were times in the 80s where 39 cars entered for a race where only 30 were allowed to run in qualifying and 26 to race. What happened was something like 22 places went to the top 11 teams. The other 17 cars ran in one prequalifying session at supid o’clock on a Friday morning. The fastest 8 went into qualifying and the rest went home. At the halfway point in the season the top 11 teams in the points got the automatic slots and those below had to go through the pre-qualifying. I am sure the numbers are not right but the procedure is. {Comment #859}

Steven, your numbers are correct. That is indeed how pre-qualifying/qualifying used to run.

That worked brilliantly back in the 1980s when a team cost about £10m a year to run competitively. However, the funding needed to get the £50m that the cheapest current team needs to run is so much that only very large, very corporate companies can justify the expense. They need the guarantees and conservatism - that's part of the reason Jordan no longer exists in its original form. As such, if that system was implemented in its old form, there probably wouldn't be enough money to run more than four teams any more.

However, a pre-season pre-qualifying session, covering a whole season, would probably work while retaining the meritocratic principle pre-qualifying was meant to achieve.

  • Nick20/08/2009 at 22:02

Hehe. You wouldn't want to hear Mr C singing, trust me.

hehe, go for it, sneak in a little audio recording... You could use it on sidepodradio ;)

  • Alianora La Canta20/08/2009 at 22:03

    The costs are higher and the teams are bigger but if big established teams can’t compete with new smaller teams that is their problem. {Comment #861}

Ironically it's the biggest teams that are most likely to hold onto their funding - 1980s-style pre-qualifying would pose a bigger problem the smaller the entity, which would hit the very teams trying to get in worst. They can't prove a track record, so getting enough money in to even make the first attempt - or even half of the first attempt a la Jordan - would be an almost insuperable barrier.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 22:06

hehe, go for it, sneak in a little audio recording... You could use it on sidepodradio ;)

    I like your thinking

  • Alianora La Canta20/08/2009 at 22:08

    For anyone interested AUTOSPORT today announced the extent of Schumacher’s injuries from his motor bike accident that stopped his comeback. {Comment #867}

The mind boggles as to how Michael ever thought he'd manage to come back to any form of professional-level motorsport - and how injuries of that extent were kept so quiet. Rarely has the phrase, "The spirit was willing but the flesh was weak" so apt...

  • Alianora La Canta20/08/2009 at 22:12

    That is cruel. The uphill run from Eau Rouge could kill someone. {Comment #884}

If they're anything like the treadmills in the gym I used to frequent, it could kill the treadmill first...

  • Alison20/08/2009 at 22:12

Perhaps a very elaborate bluff to make him look willing but really never realistically meant he'd have to compete and risk his reputation.....

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 22:14

Perhaps a very elaborate bluff to make him look willing but really never realistically meant he'd have to compete and risk his reputation.....

Apparently he is still training and AUTOSPORT are saying that the thing that stopped his comeback was his strength and not the injuries.

Surely during your medical training you have the odd idea to make things better. I have stacks of ideas for inventions but I just don't have the money to make them happen and you can't go one the show until you are up and running.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 22:48

but of course, the same thing I always get

thats a lie, sometimes I get a twister. But for F1, thats what I always get.

I dont know why anyone would. It has a pretty poor success rate, and you have to wonder about the quality of the credentials of the 'dragons' as one of the original ones saw her business go bust a year or 2 after staring on the show

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 22:50

They did the gig now they are playing some U2 songs and interviewing peeople

They are discussing tonight's gig and the one they did in Glasgow on Tuesday. They seem to think the Sheffield crowd was very quiet in comparison to thousands of Glaswegians. Are people anywhere noisier? Is it possible?

  • Alison20/08/2009 at 22:51

Surely during your medical training you have the odd idea to make things better. I have stacks of ideas for inventions but I just don't have the money to make them happen and you can't go one the show until you are up and running.

I'm not so much an ideas person, I'm a natural evaluator.... I'm pretty good at critiquing other people's ideas, and developing things.

  • Pat W20/08/2009 at 22:51

Normal awake time for me is: 5:30 to 23:30 that's hardly Amyesque

My normal awake time Mon-Fri is 7.30am to 1.30am but that's only 'cos I'm up commenting when I should be in bed an hour earlier...

Lots of people have businesses go bust. It is very rare for an an entrpreneur never to have to take a backward step

  • RG20/08/2009 at 22:52

hehe. don valley only has one side to trap the noise. where did they play in glasgow?

    Hampden Park.

The only product I've ever seen off the show actually in shops was one that the dragons rejected!

  • Alison20/08/2009 at 22:53

I'm not so much an ideas person, I'm a natural evaluator.... I'm pretty good at critiquing other people's ideas, and developing things.

You will probably evolve into an ideas person. You should try some time just finding somewhere cam to sit down, clear your mind and decide you have an hour where the only thing you are going to think about any ideas that pop into your mind. You never know

  • Lukeh20/08/2009 at 22:54

I just really like the idea of going on Dragon's Den. I'm sure I'd do a better job than some of the losers that do get on there....

I want to propose my idea of a toaster that has hands to catch your toast in case it pops out too much. I want 50million for a 5% share of my business.

    Win win idea.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 22:54

hehe. don valley only has one side to trap the noise. where did they play in glasgow?

Hampden, the national football stadium which has a reputation for being an atmosphere drain since it was modified.

  • Steven Roy20/08/2009 at 22:56

The only product I've ever seen off the show actually in shops was one that the dragons rejected!

There are a lot of good ideas and products rejected because the owners of them are incompetent or think they can spend percentages in the shops

Chatsworth Park was noisier than Sheffield (Hallam FM Arena) even though it was for the same artist (Meat Loaf) and Chatsworth had about half the crowd size of Sheffield. There were probably thousands of Sheffield people in the U2 crowd but apart from the drunken singers they probably weren't making much/any noise...

I don't get how some people reckon they're able to make money with some ideas! This woman seems to be pitching some sort of online recipe book.... I really can't see how that makes money.

You are watching now? That sounds like one from the last series.

By the way, it's @jayegan 's last day as an intern at Force India today (since it's now past midnight here). He's been working with the R&D department and at the moment I'm having a good conversation on Twitter with him.

It's good that you can have a conversation with someone inside your team

It's on iplayer. I don't know why I'm watching it, it just makes me frustrated.

  • me20/08/2009 at 23:07

Haha yeah, I know. One of my friends works for an online newspaper. It's so hard to make websites viable....

in fairness, we're not really trying.

if i could bottle giggles though, i'd be a very rich man.

  • Jon Waldock20/08/2009 at 23:07

    oooh, thats cool. :D

i havent decided what im going to do yet, and i havent got a firm offer from them yet...but if i do then i shall give you a buzz because i want to know lots about it :D

Sounds like the sort of thing that happened with Queen when had Freddie Mercury as their singer.

    i have a place on the motorsport course at Bucks New uni which i’ve always had a bit of a thing for, i have another place on a Digital Media course at Bradford which looks good but would be #2 to the motorsport and i have York St John, Wales and Cumbria uni’s phoning me back tomorrow to let me know if i’ve got any offers from them for primary teaching (which is what im planning to do long term anyway) {Comment #995}

Sounds like you have a good deal of choices. Well done, Jon, and good luck with whichever path you choose to pursue.

    A2 Maths - E

It is THE most amazing course in the world,

it has enginnering bits, plus they train me to be a marshall, time keeper, scruiteneer, aand i get to take my ARDS test...mmm

  • Jon Waldock20/08/2009 at 23:26

And thus when i originally was looking at motorsport courses and discovered that 95% are CAD/Maths/Physics based....i ran away....

You have a uni course preparing you for all the non-paying jobs in motorsport. Still you get in a race car so it's all good.

There are other bits of it too, the engineering stuff is great apparently and you learn biology stuff too about driver fitness aswell, so its an all round thing. i love green beans. Just hate baked beans. And chilli beans. Any bean that is roundish instead of long and thin. I have been at work less than an hour. Too early to go get dinner? I might go visit the new daily
