It's my Dad's birthday today, so I'm abusing my powers to say Happy Birthday to him. I am taking him out for the day to celebrate, and that means going into the big, wide world. Expect comments and pictures as we go. Meanwhile, here are the Formula 1 related things we're talking about:

  • The debate over the Renault punishment (or lack of it) continues to rage, and hasn't been lessened by their announcement today. Romain Grosjean takes over the reigns of the second car from Nelson Piquet, and if you need to know more about him, Autosport have compiled some facts for you, including his desire to be Superman.
  • Christian Klien (boo, hiss) has been talking about his desire to race for BMW, or whatever the team will become. It seems odd to be talking up your chances of racing for a team that won't actually exist beyond this year, but perhaps he is just trying to show loyalty in the hopes he can keep some kind of drive in F1?
  • Badoer has said that when he takes to the track this weekend, it will really be like an ultimate test session for him. Surely he should be thinking of it as a race by now? He's waited long enough for the opportunity! He also said he would be thinking first of Felipe and then of Schumi. I wonder where driving actually falls on his list of thoughts?

That'll do for now. Please keep your great comments coming. I've seen some very respectful and sensible debates on the site over the last few days, and I love it. I'll see you in the comments.

So I sent in some pics of where I was today, err, yesterday, to dropio as well as some videos which appear to have failed to upload.

House of Marbles in Devon. To be honest it wasn't that exciting, more of a good place to have lunch (excellent food, relaxed place) with a few exhibits, a glass-making workshop, and shop full of tat attached to it. I recommend going for the food and the general wander around.

On the way home we stopped at the donkey sanctuary near Sidmouth.

    stunned, honest.

It rotates on a bed of water, yet weighs 2 tonnes. I was impressed.

    what's the pig?

An example of the utter tat on sale in the shop, one of the better ones.

were you allowed to use it?

  • Pat W18/08/2009 at 23:37

    stunned, honest. what's the pig?

    And the wire thing?

A big thing on a wall where marbles are hoisted up and then roll down, activating a junction for the next one so the next one goes a different way... spins things around.. makes a bell ring.

Pretty tedious stuff after the first 2 minutes but the effort required to make it was impressive.

  • Pat W18/08/2009 at 23:37

were you allowed to use it?

When it stopped you could press a button to make it start again.

  • Pat W18/08/2009 at 23:38

I can't believe i didn't send pics of donkeys, I know there are animal lovers here... There was no signal at the place and I must have forgotten after. Some are up now.

A company I used to work for has something very similar in its reception except it is stone. It is amazing how little water flow it takes to spin it

    i'm moving to leo's.

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:06

    i'm moving to leo's.

If only Leo would move to Finland

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:19

If only Leo would move to Finland

am gonna need to watch that back about three times. however...

the problem we have, is a similar problem to what leo appears to experience. and that is, skype is the best way to take calls in a globalised world, but skype doesn't offer any kind of internal mixer. everything is "on". always.

to solve that, you need multiple copies of skype running, and that requires multiple machines. hence why i want need x4 eeepc's. that would allow x4 skype calls to be mixed individually.

ideally we need more than four, however, even if we had more than four we couldn't mix them, because that's the limit of the analogue mixer. it can only mix-minus (send back everything but the caller to the caller) four people.

you can get bigger mixers, but truth is, none are really designed for this, and that means you need a massive (and expensive) desk to handle more than four mix-minus'. which is what leo bought, but we can't afford.

in a nutshell that's the problem. in the past radio stations solve this by getting people to come into the studio. fighting talk for example only normally has x1 person on the phone. partly because it sounds better that way, but partly because it's really hard to do it via phones.

sidepodpanel is actually an insane concept. had we had any idea what it would've involved, we wouldn't have even considered it. now though... it's a challenge.

all of the above is the problem. next comment = the solution.

  • Amy19/08/2009 at 01:20

morning all. I was excited about the slim ps3 even though there is nothing wrong with the one i have. Then i saw the pictures and decided i can live without it. I cant wait to go home and watch cooking with giggles, i hope it was recorded!

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:21

am gonna need to watch that back about three times. however...

As soon as he said it would be in re-runs I thought you would have to watch again. Iy's a shame there is no schedule for re-runs so that you know when it will be on. At least you know it will be after Net at Night.

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:22

all of the above is the problem. next comment = the solution.

    Even I can understand that.

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:24

Hi Amy. I am sure cooking with Giggles will be on his ustream. He also went for a walk through London via Qik.

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:25

all of the above is the problem. next comment = the solution.

the solution that telos systems have created appears to be a desk designed for podcasting, via skype. it solves other problems too, but mainly it solves our issue.

it does this by ensuring that all conversation is digital and stays digital, but it also has useful podcasting things like mix-minus built in from the start. never heard of that before.

that desk appears to be able to handle an unlimited amount of digital conversation, and because it's digital, the quality never reduces.

it is a stunning piece of kit and i never for one second thought something like that would ever be built, simply because no other manufacturer has even hinted at solving these kind of problems. there were no small steps leading up to a solution. it's just fixed. right there. all problems solved.

    crazy.

  • Nick19/08/2009 at 01:26

Perhaps if everyone on it muted their microphone when it wasnt there turn to speak?

Its not ideal, and it probably wouldnt help with the levals, but it might help?

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:27

Perhaps if everyone on it muted their microphone when it wasnt there turn to speak?

nope. because then you lose the spontaneous laughing.

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:29

It sounded like it was way beyond anything Leo thought was oossible and he must get info on evet piece of technology on the planet.

  • Nick19/08/2009 at 01:29

    *unmutes to laugh* hehe

    good point!

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:30

Perhaps if everyone on it muted their microphone when it wasnt there turn to speak?

The main reason that doesn't work is someone of us - OK me - forgets to unmute before talking

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:31

It sounded like it was way beyond anything Leo thought was oossible and he must get info on evet piece of technology on the planet.

i imagine he's been struggling with the problem much longer than we have too. then someone solves his issue and turns up with free equipment to boot.

i'd be bouncing through the ceiling.

  • Nick19/08/2009 at 01:33

the problem we have, is a similar problem to what leo appears to experience. and that is, skype is the best way to take calls in a globalised world, but skype doesn't offer any kind of internal mixer. everything is "on". always.

IS there any other software which uses skype? Like trillian? if so maybe a software solution?

I know 3rd party skype aps were made for android, but i think one of them was done by the company which makes them for 3, so i guess their could be inside knowledge.

The only other solution i could see would be to have the 4 eepc's with 2 people on a 3 way skype call in. but they would have to be the people with the best connection and audio quality.

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 01:34

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:35

IS there any other software which uses skype? Like trillian? if so maybe a software solution?

sadly nothing. the way the technology works, i don't think skype can actually split users into channels, without rethinking the whole concept of skype.

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:40

The only other solution i could see would be to have the 4 eepc's with 2 people on a 3 way skype call in. but they would have to be the people with the best connection and audio quality.

the theory is sort of like that. at the moment, we have alex on a separate channel to any callers during the parade lap. ideally the number of available channels will increase as an when i'm allowed more eeepc's.

...or someone turns up with free stuff :)

  • Nick19/08/2009 at 01:46

...or someone turns up with free stuff :)

If you only need them for skype, would it be worth having a look for old laptops on freecycle or other places which are getting rid of old laptops?

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:49

If you only need them for skype, would it be worth having a look for old laptops on freecycle or other places which are getting rid of old laptops?

could be, but, get this... more machines = more noise.

we ideally need silence. hence why passively cooled linux eeepc's are so appealing.

  • Nick19/08/2009 at 01:53

we ideally need silence. hence why passively cooled linux eeepc's are so appealing.

ah yes. you have me again.

My only other suggestion would be PSP's which also run skype, but i dont know how you would connect them.

I have a 3 mobile i nolonger need which will run skype, but it uses usb for audio out so i doubt it would be any help

  • me19/08/2009 at 01:54

yup, tried dedicated skype phones to and even a fudged adapter to force the itouch into using skype.

Hi guys. Can't wait for the weekend. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on something I brought up at the last race with regards to KERS. I am not aware of the what the detailed rules say (I am guessing they say its ok) but does anyone else think it's a bit iffy to be running KERS off the line at the start of the race? Considering that strictly speaking energy recovered is from slowing the car down. Because this should happen during the course of the race should teams be allowed to have a fully charged KERS device prior to the race starting? I know that this is being a bit picky but isn't that what F1 rules are all about? I would love to hear any feedback on this. Oh and Amy, loved the walk around Albert Park. Bring on the seafront at Valencia.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/08/2009 at 05:54

yeah, ill get in the habit ;).

Has anyone read the James Allen book on Schumi? My wife is a Schumi fan (if id known that earlier.............lol) and i resisted reading it for a year, and i read it, and it actually made me hate him even more! lol

I've read it - and from asking others who have, it seems that it strengthens your opinion on the guy - either it makes you love him more or dislike him more!

I think this book should be required reading for all F1 fans...

In theory yes, except they can charge it up on the warmup lap so that's OK by me...

It's specifically allowed in the rules as I understand it. One of the concerns that teams had with flywheel devices rather than their battery is that they worried that they wouldn't be able to store enough energy for the start. The longer you leave a flywheel the slower it gets regardless of if you use it. The Flybrid model I saw would take 90 minutes to lose power even if you didn't use it.

It's extra tough because you have to think through different circuits, so it's easy to miss one-off Euro GPs. ;)

so renault received letters of support from few teams:

    41. The Court notes that it has taken account of the letters of support which the Appellant has received from Red Bull Racing, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, and Toyota F1 Team and which it has submitted to the Court. These letters confirm that two of the above-mentioned teams lay claim to having followed improved procedures precisely in order to avoid the very serious safety risks which unquestionable arose in the present case. While the Court accepts the FIA’s submissions that the letters should not be regarded as wholly unsolicited testimonials of support, it considers that it would be wrong in the circumstances of this case to ignore the other teams’ views, which they have formally recorded in writing with the knowledge and intention that they should be submitted to the Court.

If they didn't, they'd be better off banning the device entirely, since the only other use practical anyone seems to have come up with for it is to prevent overtaking...

I've got the document open. Annoyingly enough, changes from the previous version of the regulations are not indicated.

However Article 29.1 b) is very specific:

"Refuelling during a race is forbidden".

What do quali/parc ferme rules say?

    POST QUALIFYING PARC FERMÉ

34.1 Each car will be deemed to be in parc fermé from the time at which it leaves the pit lane for the first time

during qualifying practice until the start of the race. Any car which fails to leave the pit lane during

qualifying practice will be deemed to be in parc fermé at the end of Q1.

Between these times, other than when cars are returned to the parc fermé overnight, the following work

    may be carried out :

    - engines may be started ;

    - fuel may be added or removed and a fuel breather fitted ;

Article 34.1 is the regulation which I think confirms low-fuel qualifying. The following sentence has been added to the list of things that may be altered in parc fermé:

"- fuel may be added or removed and a fuel breather fitted"

So the fuel you qualify with does not need to be the fuel you start with.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/08/2009 at 10:59

My dad also wants to get some bees, not so much a fan of that.

Have dropioed some giant onions, a chocolate fountain and a rabbit. Who knew farmers had such exciting lives?

You need to play FarmVille on Facebook!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/08/2009 at 11:01

Speaking of which... ...it's been three-and-a-half weeks since the last race and the FIA still haven't got round to posting their Technical Report for Hungary. This has made a bit of a mess of me trying to update my engine and gearbox status entries.

Are you sure? I'll have a dig around tonight and see if I have it...

  • me19/08/2009 at 11:03

You need to play FarmVille on Facebook!

only if you'll all agree to livestream it.

If they ever put it up, they must have taken it down again because it's not on the FIA site (even though the media centre shown is still Hungary).

They haven't even got the Constructor's and Driver's Championship pages up in that section and I don't think there was the slightest controversy over those...

  • Alianora La Canta19/08/2009 at 11:04

does it have anything to do with the fact they are racing round valencia? ;)

it doesnt look any where near as good graphically as F105/6 but then wii games dont, thats not the point of them, you can guarentee PS3/XBOX will be amazing though

I'm kinda hoping that they've been concentrating on the PS3/Xbox versions instead.

Not just graphically, the thing looks, well, underwhelming. Take it the Wii version is more arcade than simulator?

You can create your own: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/google-docs-free-online-file-comparison-software/2414/

It doesn't work very well but it's fun :)

The system... I think so. But i think its success depends if sony put their big game studios on developing games for it. if it goes to the smaller ones, it will be good but not revloutionary.

I think I need to have a serious look at getting the BIL (Brother In Law) to bring one back for me. Even paying shipping and import taxes, it would be massively cheaper.

I also need to have a chat to a Samsung rep!

    Its cheaper in the US.

Australia gets a rough deal on games too, they cost a fortune.

I would put the blame for that on the shoulders of the attorney general for South Australia though, so send you complaints to him!

I'll buy James Allen a beer and have a chat with him if I get a chance lol

It sounds like hard work, but as you say it might be wortwhile just to get inside the paddock and have a chance to meet the people...

  • RCC19/08/2009 at 15:00

Where did you get offered that? Its the sort of thing i would love to do!

My mother while unemployed worked some hospitality event at Silverstone and they want her back for Abu Dabai, she's back in work now so she put them on to me. They wanted 10 people and I think it's filled all filled pending on what and my g/f decide, I will mention to the compnmay though i know a place to find willing volunteers etc!!!

My understanding is that you work for 5 of the 7 days you're there. I'm sure you'd get to see some of the race and practice sessions etc

    #sidepodspace update

NASA has completed its flight readiness review and has decided not to launch on Franck day. Presumably they realised they couldn't compete. The launch will now be at 1:36am Eastern / 6:36am UK Tuesday August 25th. Why can't they launch at a more considerate time? It's like they don't get that people watching and talking about their launches helps them.

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 16:10

Hi Alison. Sounds like a productive day

  • Steven Roy19/08/2009 at 16:22

but when they voted for tyre changes to return there was all that talk about FIA helping Ferrari not about stupid rule being ditched :-)

I liked the 2005 tyre rules. If F1 wants to be green why use thre or four sets of tyres for a race when it is perfectly easy to do it one on. Of F1 wants to save money why ship 4 times as many wheels and tyres around the world as necessary. Run the races on one set of tyres then everyone can choose whatever compound they want instead of being stuck with tyres they can't heat or tyres that blister.

Well we all found out that it was in the end - Ferrari had the veto, remember?

I hadn't made that connection but you are absolutely right. Ferrari could never get on top of running the 2005 tyres and the next year the tyre rule conveniently disappeared.

Received an email today from AUTOSPORT, introducing their new AUTOSPORT PLUS service.

You made it very clear that you really like the exclusive feature content on autosport.com and want more of it. Therefore we will be introducing some great new features over the coming weeks.

You also asked us to make it more obvious on the site what the distinction between free and paid-for content is. To that end we are revamping the look and feel of our subscriber content, and branding it as autosport.com PLUS, to make it clearer that this is premium content available only to subscribers.

We will be introducing other changes based on your feedback over the coming months as we strive to make the website, and your experience of it, the best that we can.

Surprisingly, they haven't taken on board my gripe with them USING CAPITALS FOR 'AUTOSPORT'. Gits.

Surprisingly, they haven't taken on board my gripe with them USING CAPITALS FOR 'AUTOSPORT'. Gits.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest, way too soon for them to admit it was wrong. It might get quietly dropped over the off-season.

I've read the Autosport summary but not the full regs. I like the low fuel quali confirmation... and 8 our per session could get hectic! Did they not lengthen Q1? 26 cars in 20 mins with 8 to be knocked out will be utterly crazy.

I didn't end up being that quite for me, people kept upsetting my plans. I hope that is not an omen for others just starting Wednesday. Thankfully the work day is almost over for me.

Things upset my plans today too. My car needed its annual test, which was rescheduled because my sister's new run-around happened to be in on the same day and needed doing first so we switched places. All fine, it meant I could have a lie-in.... until mine failed on some minor points which were time-consuming to fix. Count one holiday day used up on that... at least I was out in the sun instead of stuck in my cold, dark flat!

The wii is ps2 era tech. It is a repackaged game cube. the console started life as a wand controller for the game cube system

    I didn't know that... :-(

On the Wii F1 game not looking great... it doesn't look great and I didn't really expect it to. I'll probably get it regardless of how it looks, unless the playability gets slammed by all and sundry.

Clearing list should be up tomorrow. I'd guess at 9am because that's when the GCSE results start to be known (and therefore people start missing their offers), but check before then just in case.

Also, some universities have clearing lists on their own websites for their own courses. The official one is probably the best, though.

  • Alianora La Canta19/08/2009 at 19:12

Hahahaha I'm doing a survey at the moment and I can't actually believe people have written a question like this and kept a straight face....

Some decisions are extremely important, for example, for many people the decision about whom to marry or whether to get married at all is extremely important. On the other hand, there are many things which people consider to be less important, for example, what brand of paper plates to take on a picnic.

  • Pat W19/08/2009 at 21:28

He may say they only talked USF1.. but I wonder if they didn't... I wonder if there will be an official F1 YT channel soon.

Q: You met with Bernie Ecclestone. He has come down hard on the users of YouTube in the past – were your discussions very constructive with him?

CH: We had a productive conversation. We just talked about the opportunities for US F1 and the future of F1 in general. Obviously there have been controversies and they've finally ironed out their differences, and it's great that we can finally move forward. But our conversation just focussed on US F1.

  • Pat W19/08/2009 at 21:30

I don't want to quote the whole thing, but this is good:

CH: I see tremendous potential for all sports to integrate more media, more social connections, connect with the fans and build a fan base. And that's exactly what I hope to bring to US F1, bringing my experience and perhaps my opinions of how we could go about that. Obviously video is something I am deeply involved with today, and that is going to be a big part of what we do at US F1. Hopefully we can create compelling content that individuals around the world have an opportunity to view and share, and really feel like they are part of the team.

I know why Cadbury 99 flakes are thus called has been a Sidepodcast subject, so this story has almost certainly been linked before, but just in case it has not and anyone still is interested, this 2006 BBC report is oddly in today's BBC top-ten read list.

    Hehe :-)

I'm curious how a 2006 article is suddenly in the top-ten list...

This is the main reason why I don't read newspapers around results time or watch news stuff or even morning programs like GMTV or Breakfast, because of ridiculous statements and just annoying things that are totoally untrue concerning the actual results!

I don't think they do no.

It's called Signor Grilli and it's on Goodge street. Perfect for no frills, non expensive but good Italian and it's right in the center of town.

Of course the name is basically Mr Grill (which always makes me think of the Simpsons) but actually the owner is Jon Grilli so he is Mr Grill.

tricolore is anything in red, White and green. So the flag, the pasta or in the case of the salad... advocado, mozzarella and tomato

I was just reading more on USF1. Their commercial director has shot "over 300 documentary hours of motorsport for the likes of SpeedTV and History Channel".

  • Lukeh19/08/2009 at 22:16

Going back to a comment I made a few nights about concerning decibel levels and Muse playing in their hometown albeit it to a 84.1 decibel level, the gig will actually be outside rather than inside. Not sure what difference that makes though... seemed to me to make more sense if that was for an indoor gig rather than outdoor...

depends where it's measured from i guess. if they're standing front of the speakers, it'll go off the scale. if they're in the nearest cul-de-sac, maybe it's not so bad?

    further investigations are required!

Just still seems a bizarre level to have to me for a rock gig.

Hey, a quick question. Robin Miller has reported on SpeedTV that USF1 has an American driver, but doesn't say who it is. I suspect it's Jonathan Summerton. Has anyone heard anything?

I heard the same thing, Summerton for the 2nd seat alongside an un-named experienced non-American (at least for the first year). Others are mentioned, Summerton seems to be the name cropping up most often.

I should add that what I've read is firmly planted in the 'rumour' column at the moment.

  • Joe in Fla20/08/2009 at 00:08

I agree. Summerton started out with a big push in the Firestone Indy Lights, then dropped out of sight. I suspect that someone is now guiding him in a different path toward F1, or he's getting fitted for seats and stuff

I think most Indy teams are in Indy. There's talk that Andretti Green racing is coming apart. Marco may be looking for a place to land. I am just very thankful he will not be in the USF1 car. I do wish though, that it would Summerton and Speed in USF1.

To be honest I think it is still quite early for any of the new entrants to be announcing drivers. Existing teams will want to lock theirs in, new ones can afford to wait a while.

True, but USF1's stated goal of Americans gave them the ability to go early on at least one driver.

Mr. C! And a good day to you, Sir!

The name I've been hearing the most is Ryan Hunter-Reay. He could be the one.

    I would now like to beat whoever wrote (in tomorrows newspaper) that its feared that even people who’ve got AAB wont get a university place. {Comment #561}

Nonsense. Last year one local university was saying two Es were sufficient for its Accountancy course (provided one of them was Maths). I doubt it will have increased its standards that far - and it's about mid-table in many of the university league tables...

The top universities will be more difficult to get into than last year because of the unemployed but talented non-graduates trying to find a way through the recession. However, even there I'd imagine there were places at some of them for some courses...
