Sunday has dawned and there is mass confusion at Sidepodcast Towers as we have already done one podcast this weekend. We had to host an impromptu F1 Debrief yesterday due to the sheer volume of news that has come in since our last podcast. That means tonight we can concentrate solely on the Sidepoddie Awards show, as we had originally intended. Here's some info on what is in store tonight:

  • The party will get underway about 8pm GMT, with a live thread opening shortly before that. I hope you've RSVP'ed to let us know if you're planning on attending, and don't forget you'll need food and drink as sustenance as the party gets underway.
  • We will probably play a party tune or two, so get your requests in early, and don't forget we will be looking for volunteers to join in the Sidepodchristmas Carol. The lyrics have been narrowed down to one set on the wiki, and we'll be assigning one line at a time to as many willing voices as we can get. Familiarise yourself with it, because we'll be calling you up later.
  • Be prepared to get clapping as we hand out the 2009 Sidepoddie Awards to various deserving Formula 1 personnel. As per usual, we'll be expecting an A list attendance, but if the last few years are anything to go by, it'll just be Mr C and myself. Oh well. Get prepared, put up some fairy lights and gather the mince pies, because the party is ready to get going.

That should do it for now. I'm disappointed I have to wait an entire day for the party now, but it'll be here before we know it and until then I'll see you in the comments.

  • Steven Roy20/12/2009 at 01:57

Mr C did you see Jon's comment. He tried to rate the live show post while watching the re-run and when he clicked to rate it he was diverted away from the show and had no idea where he was in the show.

nooooooo... Jens can wait... he's already pre recorded. iplayer was created for this one reason :)

If i'd had managed to get the tickets for top gear i applied (and was on the final reserve list for) i could have seen it all live... bad times :(

    night all.

  • Journeyer20/12/2009 at 05:23

    Good morning, Europe! :D

Leaving a message for Mr Wolf - I know you'll probably never watch an F1 race in Shanghai again, but would you know when Chinese GP tickets typically go on sale? Also, when would you normally buy your tickets, and what stand did you usually choose?

Also, barring emergencies (like me missing the alarm), I should be able to join tonight's party. :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/12/2009 at 08:14

    Morning guys,

Cool! I can join you you from about 8:20 GMT for the party and sign me up for singing if you have a free slot...

    For Lou:

Button races off with an MBE

awesome!! Hehe does this mean he'll end up with a 'Jenson Button MBE' sticke on his car? (like I believe lewis has/had) ;)

No, he's not big headed like Hamilton is.

No, he's not big headed like Hamilton is.

I'm sure he didn't ask McLaren to do it.

Put it this way. My wife's uncle is a very senior professor. He never lets anyone he talks to refer to him as anything other than his first name. Now that's cool!

  • lou20/12/2009 at 10:40

No, he's not big headed like Hamilton is.

    :D lol

Jens did go round writing 'world champion' on things in brazil/ abu dhabi I suppose that's slightly different though.

No, he's not big headed like Hamilton is.

Indeed so. It seems that even signing Jenson Button might not be enough to put Team GBR McLaren ahead of Team Deutschland Mercedes in the PR stakes now.

Excellent! I am so tempted by a Sony Reader.

I wouldn't call them a last minute gift, though, bit pricey!

  • Alianora La Canta20/12/2009 at 11:05

The National Literacy Trust has done a report which links blogging and social networking with improvements in young people's attitude to writing. They summarised their position with "Practise, in whatever form, makes perfect".

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 11:06

Excellent! I am so tempted by a Sony Reader.

Me too... However I would say that to me right now it's like spending that money on something that will last for 4/5 months.

In March to June 2010 Apple will probably reveal the tablet and a proper international version of the Kindle will be released. I will certainly get a tablet if released and possibly also the international kindle...

...so the question is do I need a device to last me until then? I don't think so because the iPhone does have ereading on it and also everything else.

    But it is interesting.

  • Christine20/12/2009 at 11:09

Where's the RSVP? Anyway, I'm definitely coming and if possible I'd like to join in the Sidepodchristmas Carol.

oh, so very very slowly. It will totally convince you to own one though. Or not, because as far as I recall your major gripe is that all transactions are still done through amazon.com instead of amazon.co.uk, which isn't an issue for me because there is no such thing as amazon.com.au anyway.

    Yay!

  • Amy20/12/2009 at 12:33

    Yay!

writing about it on a plane is probably better than actually using it, because I doubt I'd get through more than a paragraph before I get a 'what is that?'

I've gotten a lot more 'what is that?' questions since I changed desks at work and am surrounded by more people. One of my colleagues is now thinking of buying one and one already has :D

I normally use your book to demonstrate it. I used calibre to convert the pdf to a proper e-book though because as great as the pdf support is, I still find proper e-book versions easier to read because I can change the text size :D (ps if anyone gets any e-reader, calibre is super-duper-must-have-software)

  • Christine20/12/2009 at 13:03

ARGHHHH, have I ever mentioned how much I hate Logic?

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 13:14

ARGHHHH, have I ever mentioned how much I hate Logic?

just a few times! what has it done now?

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 13:16

that's neat. It does a better version of the conversion does it?

I was going to create a proper kindle version at one point but as I had no way of distributing it it seemed a bit silly.

  • Christine20/12/2009 at 13:16

just a few times! what has it done now?

It has this inexplicable bug where the start and end points are not what happens once you've exported, but you can't tell until you've exported which takes a good ten minutes or so, depending on the size of the file.

It's our fault really, for doing shows that are too long.

  • Amy20/12/2009 at 13:18

that's neat. It does a better version of the conversion does it?

indeed, for some reason it converts stuff better than amazon does. It supports a lot more formats too.

sorry for stealing your wall of news for the advent last night.

    ummmm?

You were going to do a wall of people for the pannel. And I beat you to it (albeit by cheating a lot)

you do owe us a joke for today though.

none of the end of row ones have jokes in. They are all kind of news roundups of the jokes before them. I'm not really sure why... But they are. However the Christmas day joke will contain all of the backlog of jokes from thoes days. So you get a bumper set of 5 on that day.

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 14:48

I should have been back up on friday, power supply having failed tuesday. They delivered it to my neighbour who has clearly gone away for weekend! I'd sort of expected it would be left with royal mail office which is next door, but they used a courier

    i pay attention, i do.

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 14:51

you do owe us a joke for today though.

in case you need a spare joke. Here's one:

a panda walks into a bar and says, "can I have a gin and tonic"

the bartender cannot believe his eyes, "I can't believe it you must be the first panda i've ever seen in a bar"

the bartender takes a fiver off the panda and gives him 20p back.

The panda replies, "well at these prices it's not surprising"

  • Pat mobile20/12/2009 at 14:53

  • Pat mobile20/12/2009 at 15:00

    Afternoon all.

Well, we braved the city and decided to get our Christmas shopping done in one hit. Thankfully it wasn't all that busy and we were able to get everything done in about 3 hours. We decided that we'd just buy each other our presents and have them now instead of wait for Friday. Yeah it's not that in tune with the point of Christmas but we don't even have any decorations up! It just doesn't feel like it to us but we'll still celebrate it with family. That and we just couldn't really be bothered!

So I got mum a Ministry of Sound Electric 80s since she likes all the 80s music, and I got the boxset of all the Rocky films, as I'm really into them at the moment :D

    hello

  • Bassano20/12/2009 at 18:03

Well shelter is one of my favourite charities so I can't say fairer than that.

Charitable giving to Shelter always go well together at this time of year

  • RG20/12/2009 at 18:03

    Evening all

    Hello Mr Steven.

  • Steven Roy20/12/2009 at 18:04

    #sidepodspace apology

I thought I had missed the launch of today's Soyuz after plugging it here. Turns out that the time zone info was wrong. Very wrong. The first report I read said 4:52pm CET but it is actually 4:52pm EST which means the launch is at 9:52pm UK time so we will probably miss it anyway.

Sorry if anyone who tried to watch it earlier.

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 18:06

As I will not be around later... And as certain people are too polite to ask...

There is a gift all of us receive every day which is Sidepodcast. A wonderful service which despite its founders not celebrating Christmas have this year managed 25 advent days, two Christmas Parties, one tired Christine and a Mr C in a pear treee... oh hold on I mean 25 advent days, two Christmas Parties and one fantastic website that we enjoy all year round.

Each year we are astounded by what these people do and achieve for us. And it costs them real money to keep doing it. So why not buy them a Christmas present. You know they'll only spend it on the site anyway:

So go to the homepage and click on one of the donation buttons... Even a quid is going to help right?

  • Jon Waldock20/12/2009 at 18:10

As I will not be around later... And as certain people are too polite to ask...

You speak total sense my friend :)

    Ooh, good point Alex

    I haven't donated for a while

A Christmas What The Duck for you all

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 18:17

    [Put's on to-do list]

Remember that while things might not be asked about on the show... People can, from time to time, mention it in the comments :)

And I don't want to bring things down before they start, of course not, but when watching a live show... it does cost £10 per hour to broadcast!

Anyway enough of me banging on!

  • Alex Andronov20/12/2009 at 18:18

I'm sadly offski... See you later everyone... Have a great great great party!

  • Bassano20/12/2009 at 18:18

And I don't want to bring things down before they start, of course not, but when watching a live show... it does cost £10 per hour to broadcast!

Imagine if one person [or a small group] donated £10 and it moved on each week

  • Bassano20/12/2009 at 18:18

I'm sadly offski... See you later everyone... Have a great great great party!

    Cheers Alex

Hmm, am skeptical. Why would Italy get another GP?

As long as Monza stays, would this replace Turkey?

The new mayor of Rome has wanted that for months. There were stories and animation of the track around about 6 months ago

It's not an Xmas song. The fact that this was all done by Sony to ensure that people bought loads of records and listen to the chart show just proves that the music industry will do anything to make a buck!

i take your point, and it annoys me that whatever cowell puts out wins, but not for christmas

  • Steven Roy20/12/2009 at 19:07

So? Christmas number 1 used to be about funny songs and laughing at the words, then it turned into X Factor and it got a bit worse, but this has just taken the biscuit, it's taken it to a new low.

So why does anyone care about it. Ignore it. Don't listen to the chart show. Don't discuss it. All the coverage this 'event' is getting just proves they made the correct business move and next year Cowell is going to mount a massive campaign to get it back and everyone will sell more records.

  • RG20/12/2009 at 19:08

in fact i can't remember the last i actually liked the christmas number one.

'91 for me. Though 9 years ago probably '00. Bless my younger self.

  • me20/12/2009 at 19:09

    f1 needs him.

I care, and about half a million others it seems, because the X Factor didn't win again

  • Steven Roy20/12/2009 at 19:10

    f1 needs him.

Really? You don't think the current megalomaniac has made a big enough mess without Cowell and his unfeasibly high waistband getting involved.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/12/2009 at 19:10

what ever happened to people buying songs they liked not just because it was/wasn't created by someone from a talent show... i say download the songs you like and want to listen to... i can't believe people care this much about the christmas no.1.... in fact i can't remember the last i actually liked the christmas number one.

I foolishly subscribe to the idea that a big part of Xmas is about Love and peace and family and stuff. I know that a silly pop song isn't part of that, but to me the idea of a protest song being played on the radio as the representative song of the time just seems wrong.

And because you didn't ask - we don't do all of this in Denmark - in fact I have hardly heard any pop-mas songs all December. They sing carols and proper Xmas songs - and we also do that around the tree.

  • lou20/12/2009 at 19:10

    i HEART lou :)

remember you promised not to be mean about Jenson this evening :P

i just don't get the whole thing. I don't like xfactor so i don't watch it... i don't like either of the songs so i don't buy or listen to them... i'll just live in my coldplay/ f1/ photography dominated bubble and be happy i suppose :)

  • Pat W20/12/2009 at 19:11

    Things I have learned:

    - LCLT also works with the Wii, minus the FBFB. But the 'post comment' button doesn't work in either neither do embedded videos (I tried to watch the live show replay). Not a big deal though.

    - The iPlayer app for the Wii is considerably better than the old way of going to the website in the browser.

    - If you are offline for a couple of days, you feel a mixture of freedom from being tied to the computer, and loss from not knowing ANYTHING of what's happening.

    - I have caught up with 7xFastForward, 1xHIGNFY, the pilot of the series Fringe (unfortunately on the day the series was removed from BT On Demand so I couldn't catch the rest) and the film Flags of our Fathers.

For some reason my computer is still freezing every 10 secs or so, I dunno if that is FF, XP or some other thing.

  • Steven Roy20/12/2009 at 19:11

I care, and about half a million others it seems, because the X Factor didn't win again

The question that matters from Cowell's point of view is did the X factor sell more this year than last because of the threat

  • RG20/12/2009 at 19:11

what ever happened to people buying songs they liked not just because it was/wasn't created by someone from a talent show... i say download the songs you like and want to listen to... i can't believe people care this much about the christmas no.1.... in fact i can't remember the last i actually liked the christmas number one.

People have always acted irrationally over the christmas no1

  • Pat W20/12/2009 at 19:12

Well done. Now get writing that blog post ;)

I've thought of at least three, I should've written them down

    I hate that too!

  • lou20/12/2009 at 19:13

And because you didn't ask - we don't do all of this in Denmark - in fact I have hardly heard any pop-mas songs all December. They sing carols and proper Xmas songs - and we also do that around the tree.

awww that sounds lovely! one of my best friends lives in a village where once a year at christmas everyone from their local church gets together and they stand around this HUGE christmas tree on their village green and sing carols and have mince pies and mulled wine. That always sounds so lovely to me. She was very excited this year cause as they were singing it started snowing.

I understand that but don't tell me this hasn't bothered him, just a little bit

Which brings a huge grin to my face

Christmas really is different here. Yes there is presents, but that's like 5% of what is important. It's all about food, drink, good times and being together.

I disagree, as a country it is, but thats only because thats what as a country we are like. If you don't want to be (i'm not saying you you) then don't do it.

Yes there'll always be bits of commercial in our christmas's but you can resist the most of it if you want to

They usually have about 10 singles in the shops near me, but they're invariably the top 10 minus the digital-only releases. And sometimes a single costs nearly as much as that artist's album, if the album's on offer...

Possibly - but sales of these two singles accounted for nearly 1/4 of all download single sales (those that count towards the above figure that is) this year.

At some points in the year its possible to get into the top 40 with less than 10K sales....

Lol. My mum used to organise meetings for London folk who would want to come to Bristol as 'its the west country'. She'd spend a lot of time pointing out that as the other parties were coming from places like Plymouth and Penzance, that Taunton was probably a better starting point, and why not consider Exeter whilst they were at it (it taking half a day to get from penzance to bristol at the best of times....)

  • Alianora La Canta20/12/2009 at 23:14

My point is that for any given individual, a compass direction's people will always be "Compass direction+ener", at least if they're speaking in English and using compass directions to describe the people.

  • Alianora La Canta20/12/2009 at 23:18

For me, it depends on whether I'm thinking "North/Midlands/South" or "North/South" at the time. In the former case, I consider Sheffield to be the start of "North"* and Silverstone the start of "South". In the latter, the division is the Watling Road.

    * - Steven's argument is settled because I consider Scotland to be its own country, thus meaning any compass directions would be in relation to Scotland, not to England (which is what I generally have in mind when I think in compass points).

I agree with the sentiments expressed by Steve Mann.

All of them? I havent finished reading the full article yet, but Steve Mann comes off as an idiot who just happens to have stumbled on a few relevant points.

This is 2009 people. Most of what he says may have been true years ago, but he clearly needs some computer lessons.

  • Pat W20/12/2009 at 23:22

    :-)

I was reading a free accountancy magazine I get earlier, and there was a Q&A with the 'South Wales and South West' rep from something or other, he was going about how Cardiff and Bristol and Bath were so great... I was sat there thinking "well yeah but they are miles away!"

Many people don't consider Bristol or Bath to be in the SW..

Ah. We have one of those (well, ok, maybe 300m here). But in this weather it would be a death wish to venture to it....

    So do I

    Yes, all of them.

    Yes, all of them.

I mean, I like the idea of doing things digitally some of the time but they are just going about it the wrong way and I enjoy buying CDs.

  • Andy Taylor20/12/2009 at 23:25

This is 2009 people. Most of what he says may have been true years ago, but he clearly needs some computer lessons.

It's still true today for many people. Remember that more than half of all ipod buyers are still purchasing their first portable music player.

I'll keep buying CDs, although I don't actually buy much stuff now anyway.

  • Pat W20/12/2009 at 23:28

I mean, I like the idea of doing things digitally some of the time but they are just going about it the wrong way and I enjoy buying CDs.

To expand, I enjoy buying CDs but carrying them around is a pain. So I like having the good quality source available for me to rip it into a format I like on my computer, and in MP3 which my car stereo can handle via SD card.

I do need to spend some time doing that properly actually, my colleciton is a bit of a mess at the minute :-)

  • Bassano20/12/2009 at 23:28

I agree with the sentiments expressed by Steve Mann.

He fails to point out that you can burn your favourite mp3's to CD or DVD at will for playback or back up purposes

  • Pat W20/12/2009 at 23:29

It's still true today for many people. Remember that more than half of all ipod buyers are still purchasing their first portable music player.

I've only got a diddy little 128mb player which is old and dying, and my fairly old phone which doesn't have much memory either. When I have more disposable income I'll upgrade..

  • Jeremy20/12/2009 at 23:29

    Yes, all of them.

    Point 4. Don't buy DRM'd music = problem solved.

Point 5. I need clarification on this. How is a CD built for your convenience? What am I missing?

I was too harsh before. I regret saying he was an idiot. He doesn't seem to understand the arguments against what he has said, thats all.

There's no point in me buying digital music until a sensible delivery method has been devised. At the moment, the messing about attempting to get the delivery site to work, the transaction completed, the DRM removed (if relevant - because my computer seems to have a total DRM allergy) is about three times as stressful as buying the album from a shop, bringing it home and getting the wrapper off. In both cases I'd end up converting the sound anyway (I never use anything above 32kbps on my PDA, but like to have at least 96kbps on my desktop), so that step's the same for both.

Plus a CD can be played in my hi-fi and borrowed by my parents and brother. My parents don't use digital music unless it's on YouTube and my brother doesn't have an internet connection (so any digital music would have to be copied to CD before borrowing anyway).

  • Alianora La Canta20/12/2009 at 23:33

He fails to point out that you can burn your favourite mp3's to CD or DVD at will for playback or back up purposes

Which, if it's as fiddly a process for other people as it is for me, can't be counted on to work first time (and is more hassle to sort if it does go wrong). With the CD the "ripping" effectively is the backup.

  • Bassano20/12/2009 at 23:34

CD's were retailing for £14+ before iTunes started charging 7.99 for an album

Yet they still wonder why people turned to file sharing and the like

Being ripped off was one reason, I reckon

  • Jeremy20/12/2009 at 23:35

    Point 4. Don't buy DRM'd music = problem solved.

Point 5. I need clarification on this. How is a CD built for your convenience? What am I missing?

PS. I still buy CDs too, just not very often.

PPS. CD music is still compressed. Just not as much as digitally delivered music.

PPPS. You can put CD quality music on something like an iPod, it doesn't have to be further compressed. The output quality can be better than most CD players that people use.

Point 5. I need clarification on this. How is a CD built for your convenience? What am I missing?

    4. How much music does that rule out?

    5. Buy a CD when you are in town, put it on in the car on the way home, use it any other player you have. That wasn't his point though. His point was the restrictions that either exist or are perceived to exist using certain delivery methods.

I understand DRM isn't as bad as it used to be though, is that right?

I buy music on my iphone wherever i have mobile phone signal. Easier than buying a cd. No pants required!

I have to go out for a bit. Back soon.

The labels forced iTines into DRM

You can get DRM free stuff now, but it's more expensive [and a higher quality/bit rate]

All new purchases on iTunes are DRM free, you can upgrade your existing songs for a fee. Not necessarily more expensive, but flexiblepricing was introduced that means popular tracks may cost more than previously

Change of tack... the Indy 500 has a tradition of having a one-off pace car each year's event. This is the 2010 car:

It depends how much they are charging. If it were a straight swap that wouldn't be on to charge, but it is a higher bitrate..

I'm not trying to show off. My point is that he has gone on a rant without fully understanding the big picture. Don't tell me CDs are better because they are more convenient, when they aren't anymore.

I wonder if he said that same things when CDs took over from cassettes and vinyl?

They are only more convenient if you can't afford the necessary tech to get downloads wherever you are standing.

why? I can convert a song to MP3 (or any other format) in seconds.

I hate the IT department type computer snob attitude, but I have to say that learning how to use the tools/toys that you have helps. My 65 year old Mum (with a brain injury) can use iTunes so it cant be that hard. She needed to be shown how to use a CD player when they came out, just as I had to show her how to use iTunes.

the short answer is to change the standard import setting to MP3 (or similar) and then select the nonDRM music you want to convert. Advanced menu should have a 'convert to xxx' choice.

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 00:25

Jon first you need to tell itunes what format you're converting to. Go into the general settings tab and press import settings.

Choose MP3 (or whatever suits you) then right click a song you want to convert and choose "convert to mp3" You can also highlight a group of songs and right click in the same way.

    You keep the original file.

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 00:26

Jon first you need to tell itunes what format you're converting to. Go into the general settings tab and press import settings.

But is Jon wanting to sync with an non-Apple mp3 player?

  • Jon Waldock21/12/2009 at 00:27

But is Jon wanting to sync with an non-Apple mp3 player?

that i can do easily, it's just the converting to mp3 thats the issue

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 00:27

But is Jon wanting to sync with an non-Apple mp3 player?

I don't see the distinction? This creates an mp3 version of the file.

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 00:28

I don't see the distinction? This creates an mp3 version of the file.

    I didn't think iTunes allowed non-iPod syncing

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 00:28

that i can do easily, it's just the converting to mp3 thats the issue

Have you got it working? It's in the edit menu in preferences at the bottom of the menu. Choose the general tab and click import settings. You'll only have to do this once.

  • Jeremy21/12/2009 at 00:28

I don't see the distinction? This creates an mp3 version of the file.

iTunes will only automatically load your music onto an Apple device. The others usually need manual input from user.

  • Andy Taylor21/12/2009 at 00:28

But is Jon wanting to sync with an non-Apple mp3 player?

Exactly, once converted to mp3 he can copy onto whatever player he wants.

Note that DRM tracks won't convert.

  • Jon Waldock21/12/2009 at 00:28

    You keep the original file.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

    Thats awesome.

    Star!

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 00:29

    I didn't think iTunes allowed non-iPod syncing

I wouldn't know. This creates physical mp3 files that can be synced as you sync the rest of your stuff i'd assume.

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 00:29

Exactly, once converted to mp3 he can copy onto whatever player he wants.

    I didn't know that
