Sunday has dawned and there is mass confusion at Sidepodcast Towers as we have already done one podcast this weekend. We had to host an impromptu F1 Debrief yesterday due to the sheer volume of news that has come in since our last podcast. That means tonight we can concentrate solely on the Sidepoddie Awards show, as we had originally intended. Here's some info on what is in store tonight:
- The party will get underway about 8pm GMT, with a live thread opening shortly before that. I hope you've RSVP'ed to let us know if you're planning on attending, and don't forget you'll need food and drink as sustenance as the party gets underway.
- We will probably play a party tune or two, so get your requests in early, and don't forget we will be looking for volunteers to join in the Sidepodchristmas Carol. The lyrics have been narrowed down to one set on the wiki, and we'll be assigning one line at a time to as many willing voices as we can get. Familiarise yourself with it, because we'll be calling you up later.
- Be prepared to get clapping as we hand out the 2009 Sidepoddie Awards to various deserving Formula 1 personnel. As per usual, we'll be expecting an A list attendance, but if the last few years are anything to go by, it'll just be Mr C and myself. Oh well. Get prepared, put up some fairy lights and gather the mince pies, because the party is ready to get going.
That should do it for now. I'm disappointed I have to wait an entire day for the party now, but it'll be here before we know it and until then I'll see you in the comments.
ah-ha, there's sunday.
oooo Sunday has arrived... much to do today, including going to a christmas drinks party in the afternoon, should be back for the live show/party though :)
nice one. although you're gonna be watching jens, right?
Worked myself onto 20 Dec. And a good day you sir...Mr. C
Mr C did you see Jon's comment. He tried to rate the live show post while watching the re-run and when he clicked to rate it he was diverted away from the show and had no idea where he was in the show.
nooooooo... Jens can wait... he's already pre recorded. iplayer was created for this one reason :)
If i'd had managed to get the tickets for top gear i applied (and was on the final reserve list for) i could have seen it all live... bad times :(
you guys and you're live stuff > Mr Button :)
ahh. am guessing he was in the page rather than in lclt. that's on the fix list, i just need more time. lclt works as expected.
I can't remember if he said how he was commenting
w00t!
that is quite the compliment.
tis true... if Mr Button was in the same room it may be a different story...
depends how mean you are about him.... :P
promise not to be mean.
aw! yay! :)
plugged in yesterday's thread, but worth plugging again:
http://gigglesadvent.com/
madness!
The fellow has multiple personalities
okay it's waaaay past my bed time.. time to sleep! see you all for the party tomorrow! :)

There's another party on?
Night.
night lou.
i seem to be missing a joke though? for today.
live streaming party at 8pm GMT
Night Lou.
Don't get too drunk
Looks like he's reviewing his past efforts ;-)
That might make Monday morning work entertaining :D
Sidepoddie awards show as well
:)
has lou gone? D:
Yes. She needs to sleep so she can drink more tomorrow and be here for the party tomorrow night. I assume you will be here
i think i have broken my sleeping patterns enough to say yes. :D
The live stream of the sidepoddie awards and the sidepodparty starts around 8pm. All you need is your singing voice
hey em.
this sounds awesome!
hullo. :D
yay!
broken sleeping patterns are ace. all the cool kids hang out this time of day.
Emily.... You text me?
oh god. i didn't mean to wake you up!!!! sorry.
You are supposed to be sleeping
i was having trouble sleeping anyway
probably because i keep texting you :P
i was having trouble gettig to sleep, am still wide awake.... I think I had too much caffeine today
:P
lol so do I gather you'll be watching the spc party?
The alcohol tomorrow will balance that out
Watching? She just volunteered to sing
i just ate a lot of cheese and wine so i'm slightly afraid to go to sleep.
i won't be drinking much at this drinks party tomorrow, I'll save the drinking till watching the spc party ;)
is this volunteering or your volunteering her?
are you bringing mince pies?
i have enough mince pies and wine left over at my house to sink the titanic. lou you should come over :D and bring the rest of spc!
Volunteered herself
oooooooh!
i can if you like? Will see how much time i get to cook tomorrow ;)
lies. if i sang i think i'd break my laptop's microphone.
wonderful. thanking you.
cook?
and if you don't come over you'll find me on your doorstep ;D just a warning!
ooo you're house is massive too... How good is your Internet? Lol
You are a better singer than me. If you listen to last year's show you will find that there are not many good singers but we all have great fun.
awesome!! :)
i'm quite confused about what is happening.
thats steven volunteering you then :)
i made some last year didn't I?
pretty sure you did. i best there's evidence on the drop.
I said bring your singing voice and Emily said awesome. That's volunteering.
we still have the sofa bed out so your welcome to come round ;)
already there! i love the sofa bed. <3
i think they had a little f1 logo on them... Hehe will se how revision/ the party goes tomorrow ;)
I'm going to try and sleep... Even though I'm wide awake. Why is it my body clock breaks ever holiday?
#blamesteven
#blameemily
#blameforstar
did I miss anyone? Hehe
night all xxx
i think i'll follow you. though i'm blaming you if i have scary cheese dreams. good night everyone :)
At least it works most of the time.
Good night again

Feels good to be right sometimes. This is exactly what i was saying on here 2 days ago.
*Taking a bow*
Thankyou to Mr Saward for confirming. Who he confirmed from his old mate Quentin.
oh no, predictioning!
seeing as you're around amy, you can has the first look at what must be the most original guest post we've ever received:
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/20/the-illustrated-2009-f1-season-review/
wow!
that's what we said! and with that i gotta sleep. today's message to christine...
i mostly did everything on the list, but haven't fixed the scheduler yet, need a few more evenings work.
night all.
Good morning, Europe! :D
Leaving a message for Mr Wolf - I know you'll probably never watch an F1 race in Shanghai again, but would you know when Chinese GP tickets typically go on sale? Also, when would you normally buy your tickets, and what stand did you usually choose?
Also, barring emergencies (like me missing the alarm), I should be able to join tonight's party. :D
Morning guys,
Cool! I can join you you from about 8:20 GMT for the party and sign me up for singing if you have a free slot...
For Lou:
Button races off with an MBE
Morning all!
awesome!! Hehe does this mean he'll end up with a 'Jenson Button MBE' sticke on his car? (like I believe lewis has/had) ;)
No, he's not big headed like Hamilton is.
I'm sure he didn't ask McLaren to do it.
stupid typing on my iPod...
Put it this way. My wife's uncle is a very senior professor. He never lets anyone he talks to refer to him as anything other than his first name. Now that's cool!
:D lol
Jens did go round writing 'world champion' on things in brazil/ abu dhabi I suppose that's slightly different though.
Morning everyone.
It's not as good as that pic of him on top of the platform with a Union Jack saying 'Great Button' on it :D
I kinda expect McLaren to have a test/PR run with Hamilton MBE and Button MBE on both cars now.
Morning Christine!
Morning Christine. :)
There's some fun to be had with this I think...
morning :)
hehe that's kinda cute though :)
Indeed so. It seems that even signing Jenson Button might not be enough to put
Team GBRMcLaren ahead ofTeam DeutschlandMercedes in the PR stakes now.Morning :)
#MFC trusted reviewer Andy Ian (TWIT contributor to boot) has done a review of the top 3 ebook readers.
http://www.suntimes.com/technology/ihnatko/1948278,ihnatko-ebook-nook-kindle-itouch-121909.article
Ihnatko not Ian... What happened there??!?!
Excellent! I am so tempted by a Sony Reader.
I wouldn't call them a last minute gift, though, bit pricey!
#MFC
The National Literacy Trust has done a report which links blogging and social networking with improvements in young people's attitude to writing. They summarised their position with "Practise, in whatever form, makes perfect".
Me too... However I would say that to me right now it's like spending that money on something that will last for 4/5 months.
In March to June 2010 Apple will probably reveal the tablet and a proper international version of the Kindle will be released. I will certainly get a tablet if released and possibly also the international kindle...
...so the question is do I need a device to last me until then? I don't think so because the iPhone does have ereading on it and also everything else.
But it is interesting.
Hehe. At the moment I am stuck reading actual books! Terrible business.
I just finished a real physical book this morning too. Weird huh!
Not weird that I finished one. Weird that it's physical!
The party will get underway about 8pm GMT, with a live thread opening shortly before that. I hope you've RSVP'ed to let us know if you're planning on attending {Original entry}
Where's the RSVP? Anyway, I'm definitely coming and if possible I'd like to join in the Sidepodchristmas Carol.
There's no actual RSVP, it was just a turn of phrase really. Yay for volunteering for the carol :)
okay, i'm off to a drinks party thing at a friends... i'll be back for the live party :) have a lovely day everyone!
xxx
Have fun!
Hey everybody.
Bad news, voice is going.
Good news, still up for the live singalong
Right, I have found a way to keep my rant in the show, so good news for all rant-fans.
Yay Kindle! Boo Sony! (as a Sony fangirl that hurts me to type)
How's that blog post coming along? :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7jpz_55EdM&NR=1
I've never been quite as annoyed as i have at Jack Black saying "Octagon"
oh, so very very slowly. It will totally convince you to own one though. Or not, because as far as I recall your major gripe is that all transactions are still done through amazon.com instead of amazon.co.uk, which isn't an issue for me because there is no such thing as amazon.com.au anyway.
It might convince me to wait for one though!
I'll get it written this week, I get the feeling we'll be quiet at work. Or perhaps on my flight on Thursday. It can be my christmas present to MFC. :D
Yay!
writing about it on a plane is probably better than actually using it, because I doubt I'd get through more than a paragraph before I get a 'what is that?'
I've gotten a lot more 'what is that?' questions since I changed desks at work and am surrounded by more people. One of my colleagues is now thinking of buying one and one already has :D
You should be on commission.
Totally.
This is like in person plugging :)
I normally use your book to demonstrate it. I used calibre to convert the pdf to a proper e-book though because as great as the pdf support is, I still find proper e-book versions easier to read because I can change the text size :D (ps if anyone gets any e-reader, calibre is super-duper-must-have-software)
ARGHHHH, have I ever mentioned how much I hate Logic?
just a few times! what has it done now?
that's neat. It does a better version of the conversion does it?
I was going to create a proper kindle version at one point but as I had no way of distributing it it seemed a bit silly.
It has this inexplicable bug where the start and end points are not what happens once you've exported, but you can't tell until you've exported which takes a good ten minutes or so, depending on the size of the file.
It's our fault really, for doing shows that are too long.
indeed, for some reason it converts stuff better than amazon does. It supports a lot more formats too.
That Eurostar doesn't like the cold, does it? I would die being stuck somewhere for 16 hours!
if that happened to me it would really affect my travel plans :D
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/20/f1-debrief-i-prefer-him-where-i-can-see-him/
morning all.
morning!
sorry for stealing your wall of news for the advent last night.
ummmm?
you do owe us a joke for today though.
Hi. I am still offline. *shakes fist at neighbour* Also my tv aerial on th roof is broken.
hey pat. boo for technology. will be back before xmas?
I can read comments on Wii but not post from there
You were going to do a wall of people for the pannel. And I beat you to it (albeit by cheating a lot)
none of the end of row ones have jokes in. They are all kind of news roundups of the jokes before them. I'm not really sure why... But they are. However the Christmas day joke will contain all of the backlog of jokes from thoes days. So you get a bumper set of 5 on that day.
oooh hello pat. We have been greatly enjoying the cheese and bacon. Very tasty!
Dear Alex.
Thank you for making me want bacon at 1.50am.
Amy.
I should have been back up on friday, power supply having failed tuesday. They delivered it to my neighbour who has clearly gone away for weekend! I'd sort of expected it would be left with royal mail office which is next door, but they used a courier
so christine tells me. i have no recollection of that conversation.
i pay attention, i do.
in case you need a spare joke. Here's one:
a panda walks into a bar and says, "can I have a gin and tonic"
the bartender cannot believe his eyes, "I can't believe it you must be the first panda i've ever seen in a bar"
the bartender takes a fiver off the panda and gives him 20p back.
The panda replies, "well at these prices it's not surprising"
Glad you like it Alex!
I'm annoyed that i missed a show and will probably miss the party. I do at least have bt vision on demand, and a backlog of dvds. Going to wrap pressies and watch Conchords. Have fun and will see ya later or tomorrow at work.
ahh, i didn't realise this, but as top gear is available in HD, that means jenson will be in HD too.
Afternoon all.
Well, we braved the city and decided to get our Christmas shopping done in one hit. Thankfully it wasn't all that busy and we were able to get everything done in about 3 hours. We decided that we'd just buy each other our presents and have them now instead of wait for Friday. Yeah it's not that in tune with the point of Christmas but we don't even have any decorations up! It just doesn't feel like it to us but we'll still celebrate it with family. That and we just couldn't really be bothered!
So I got mum a Ministry of Sound Electric 80s since she likes all the 80s music, and I got the boxset of all the Rocky films, as I'm really into them at the moment :D
cool video featuring tim:

Ooo thanks Mr C :) I liked it until he said he wanted Toro Rosso to be up with McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Evening all,
Just been out for a big lunch, so we decided to take a walk home and I took some pics of the snow. It's -4 degrees today and it's going to be a cold one tonight!
and he does wear eyliner. fact.
Afternoon all
My, there are a lot of current threads today! :)
#blamechristine
I was rather enjoying fourstar still ;)
*blaming
Did Alex MMS his pics to the drop yesterday?
They're duplicated, which happens to me whenever I do the same
Bored of the sunsetting earlier?
Not liking how cold it is outside?
Don't like snow? (wierdo ;))
Well then visit http://www.feederseries.co.uk for a brand new installment of the "Back in Time" series.
Evening everyone
everning!!
Hi Lukeh
It's the eyelashes, I get that comment as well. A lot
evening all. I seem to have missed a debrief...
Hi Chris, yes - tonight is the singing and awards show
evening all! :)
Hey Lou
hey!
Hullo
Heya
it's a sunday, i've been out for alot of the day yet i have 20 unread emails... tis crazy :)
anyway, how has everyone's day been?
Hi Jackie, haven't seen you around these parts for a bit.
hello :)
Still cold :)
Hi Bassano, been being kept busy but I'm out to play tonight :D
Good to hear
How's you?
Waiting for Boxing Day
I'm not particularly Christmassy
Me neither, I hate it actually, bah humbug
christine is playing xmas songs...
I've been trying and failing to move my bed
I'll have to wait till re-inforcements arrive, its too awkward to do on my own
That needs at least two people and an empty room
Mmm. Stoopid songs.
it's not working is it?
:)
Problem is trying to turn the damned thing without taking the frame to bits, the room is very small .. I think I will have to admit defeat and just leave it where it is.
When's the No.1 announced, must be soon?
Last I heard, Cack Factor was ahead
All I'm hearing is RATM has won it.
Evnin all.
RATM is No. 1 :D
*does super awesome dance*
groan
Should be about ten to seven
Really?
as does cowell.
Wonder if they'll ditch the cack factor nrxt year if it gets beaten to the number one slot.. One can but wish
Not if it's still making a truck-load of cash, unfortunately
it makes me laugh alot
They should keep the auditions though, I love watching the trulli (keeping it f1 related, a bit) awful ones.
no. they planned the ruse.
alex pointed out that ratm's viral campaign is run by cowell's best mate.
oh poo!
Cowell runs Shelter now?
I don't care who planned it if Rage are No.1
sony own rights to ratm.
Not sure anything's official yet
but... the radio one chart show finishes at 7??? so i'm assuming they announce it similar to the weekly chart... close to 7pm?....
I'm showing my age hear as I've never even heard of them
Same, plus Shelter got £70,000 out of it and we all get to see Rage against the machine do a free gig in the UK :D
Evening everyone :)
dosent x factor give money away too?
Good evening Alex, i love todays advent offering btw. great stuff.
Some bands own the rights to their songs, is that an unusual thing?
[I know Rage's label belongs to Sony BGM]
Aww thanks Lou :)
Lukeh, where did you hear it was No.1?
It'll be officially confirmed in about an hour anyways so we'll wait and see :)
It does indeed.
Evening Squire
Hello Mr Alex.
ratm don't own the rights to "killing".
Depends when they are from and who they signed to
I e-mailed them... Seems to have been doing it to me most recently
phoney don't release rights to any artist as far as i'm am. ask george.
Actually, I don't really understand what that entails anyway.
So, they only get royalties?
Indeed. Sony is one of the worst.
Although this is a little bit like Record Labels in being horrible shocka!
the writer will get a small percentage. song will pocket the lions share.
as they would've if xfactor had won.
i know. i'm stunned.
*sony
I do really like the fact that an organised group got the word out and got everyone to buy a record whose refrain is:
f--- you I won't do what you tell me
Irony is funny :)
I remember REM's requirements when signing a new contract
A heap of money and the right's to our own songs
They got both
i thought the same thing 17 years ago when i first heard it.
would've been more accurate if it said:
f*** you, now i have to do everything you tell me.
fourstar's tweet was funny:
"Has anyone considered the consequences if nobody does what they are told to"
[at least, I think it was him :)]
(hearts)
Unfortunately I am here mainly to give you two pieces of news:
1) I will be unable to attend tonight's party :( This saddens me greatly I can only appologise but a last minute thing has put laid to my plans. Sorry again.
2) My hair is very unrulely on tonight's advent calendar.
sounds like him!
Rage still get points in my book for closing down the NYSE during the filming of their 'Sleep Now In The Fire' video
Thats a shame :( Boo
I can't say I care about anything to do with record labels. I just love the idea that RATM look likely to have a Christmas No. 1 and the fact there's good coming out of it for shelter :)
Well shelter is one of my favourite charities so I can't say fairer than that.
Evening all
Hi Steven
Hullo
hello
Charitable giving to Shelter always go well together at this time of year
Hello Mr Steven.
#sidepodspace apology
I thought I had missed the launch of today's Soyuz after plugging it here. Turns out that the time zone info was wrong. Very wrong. The first report I read said 4:52pm CET but it is actually 4:52pm EST which means the launch is at 9:52pm UK time so we will probably miss it anyway.
Sorry if anyone who tried to watch it earlier.
As I will not be around later... And as certain people are too polite to ask...
There is a gift all of us receive every day which is Sidepodcast. A wonderful service which despite its founders not celebrating Christmas have this year managed 25 advent days, two Christmas Parties, one tired Christine and a Mr C in a pear treee... oh hold on I mean 25 advent days, two Christmas Parties and one fantastic website that we enjoy all year round.
Each year we are astounded by what these people do and achieve for us. And it costs them real money to keep doing it. So why not buy them a Christmas present. You know they'll only spend it on the site anyway:
So go to the homepage and click on one of the donation buttons... Even a quid is going to help right?
You speak total sense my friend :)
Ooh, good point Alex
I haven't donated for a while
[Put's on to-do list]
A Christmas What The Duck for you all
Remember that while things might not be asked about on the show... People can, from time to time, mention it in the comments :)
And I don't want to bring things down before they start, of course not, but when watching a live show... it does cost £10 per hour to broadcast!
Anyway enough of me banging on!
I'm sadly offski... See you later everyone... Have a great great great party!
Imagine if one person [or a small group] donated £10 and it moved on each week
Cheers Alex
See ya Alex, have a good evening
See ya Alex.
Huh?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/strawberryjuicesaladpudding-bmp
SSN is saying Italian authorities have agreed a deal with Bernie to stage a race in Rome. Will see if its anywhere else.
Yesssssss!! Another Tilke street circuit!!!
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5h5EvRbDts5X_YslkrXk6Z6KNS1mg
Hmm, am skeptical. Why would Italy get another GP?
As long as Monza stays, would this replace Turkey?
The new mayor of Rome has wanted that for months. There were stories and animation of the track around about 6 months ago
They had two races for years
Agreeing and signing a deal with Bernie are not the same thing, as we all know
Quote fail :(
Corrected
Hellooooooo
I'm just back from a Christmas puppet show of Aladdin!! It was completely awesome!!
Because eventually Bernies gonna get rid of Monza, and he likes street circuits
awesome!!! i've always wanted to go to Rome! :D
Oh no it wasn't
Rome's nice, hectic - but nice
Rome mayor says it will bring in a billion euros.
""We have calculated that there will be an income of one billion euros a year with this grand prix and Rome needs to renew its tourist appeal."
:D
Someone had to, I guess
Oh yes it was! I said puppets not a pantomime silly!!!
Dreamer
The last thing we ned is another twiddly Tilke drone. Besides they will probably put it in an industrial estate or a sewage works
i would do anything to go to Italy, i've wanted to go there since i was about 5..
Just don't go via Verona Airport...
He is barking and he has just given away his negotiating position to Bernie. Bernie will be seeing big dollar signs.
I wouldn't start with Rome but that's just me
Italy is gorgeous though
my thinking is, if it's made it may still be on the calender if i ever make it as an f1 photographer.. either that or it's just an excuse for me to go to Rome.
Driving is the best way. You shouldn't go to Rome first though!! It's mental...
i would love to go to Florence.. i'd probably try go there first...
i've always said that when i win the lottery i'll take myself on a tour of Italy :P although i don't enter the lottery so that wont really happen..
Hello all, wholeheartedly agree with everything Alex says. Could also consider adding it to your New Year's Resolutions to donate to Sidepodcast every pay day. That way a) you have some money and b) you don't forget
This isn't on the BBC F1 Gossip column, I refuse to believe it may be true
Florence is beautiful. May I also suggest Assisi and Sienna if you go on a tour
Hello all. Can I just pop in and ask what time the party starts?
Siena is my fave place in Italy
8 ish
About 8pm.
i have a feeling if i ever go on a tour of italy i'd never come back...
And, Hi Andy
And the drive from Milan to Genoa through dozens of tunnels.
How long is this Peter Kay song?
You could go with Amy
BBC says Rage WON!
It's about 6 mins. What are you listening to? Radio 1 have just announced number 1!
about 6mins too long....
My feed is behind
I've just seen the headline on the website
Thanks. We have 3 small people who are desperate to watch James May's Lego programme, this is perfect timing :)
Even considering the extra money he made, I bet Simon Cowell is not happy
No, Sony and Cowell won and we lost. What kind of song is this for Xmas?
Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. Thanks!
An awesome song ;)
A brilliant one and not a cack factor one
Plus, Rage say they will play a free gig in the UK next year because of this
So? I hate the song, and hate the band. Would have prefered X factor, it's more fitting for christmas. This is a shout filled hate song
It's not an Xmas song. The fact that this was all done by Sony to ensure that people bought loads of records and listen to the chart show just proves that the music industry will do anything to make a buck!
Exactly. I love the song (not the best Rage tho) but it's not appropriate at all for Xmas :(
And an awful talent show or Bob the Builder tune is?
It's a darn sight cheerfuler!
What time does the party start?
This is a cheerful song!
It's a protest song, they don't tend to be filled with kittens & lollipops
(Kinda)
8ish
TBH no, but at least it's not some faux-anarchist screaming F-- You at me 10 times!
This is truly the definition of a phyrric victory I think :(
So it's not right for christmas
As my media teacher once said, there isn't a heavy metal band called Fluffy Metal kittens.
It works, until it was proved wrong.
And Simon Cowell is? C'mon!
not an anarchist. a corporate wh... maybe.
That's why I said faux anarchist. Hardly a real anti-whatever when you are signed to Sony, no?
Goood evening. I am in a better mood, computer is fixed :-)
That's how the whole of the Cack Factor sounds in my ears. Am glad it's over for a year or so
So? Christmas number 1 used to be about funny songs and laughing at the words, then it turned into X Factor and it got a bit worse, but this has just taken the biscuit, it's taken it to a new low.
w00t!
Paaaaat!!!
YAY!
At least it's not Cliff ;)
Space rock makes fried egg on the ocean floor.
No I haven't been drinking.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/sci/tech/8400264.stm
I hope Cliff covers it for Xmas 2010
Hi Pat
hehe1
He's a darn sight better than this rubbish.
Yet ;)
That's one opinion, I guess
agree to disagree :)
what ever happened to people buying songs they liked not just because it was/wasn't created by someone from a talent show... i say download the songs you like and want to listen to... i can't believe people care this much about the christmas no.1.... in fact i can't remember the last i actually liked the christmas number one.
I need to annoy some people on FB about this, too good an opportunity to miss ;)
Well done. Now get writing that blog post ;)
i HEART lou :)
i take your point, and it annoys me that whatever cowell puts out wins, but not for christmas
So why does anyone care about it. Ignore it. Don't listen to the chart show. Don't discuss it. All the coverage this 'event' is getting just proves they made the correct business move and next year Cowell is going to mount a massive campaign to get it back and everyone will sell more records.
'91 for me. Though 9 years ago probably '00. Bless my younger self.
f1 needs him.
I care, and about half a million others it seems, because the X Factor didn't win again
Really? You don't think the current megalomaniac has made a big enough mess without Cowell and his unfeasibly high waistband getting involved.
I foolishly subscribe to the idea that a big part of Xmas is about Love and peace and family and stuff. I know that a silly pop song isn't part of that, but to me the idea of a protest song being played on the radio as the representative song of the time just seems wrong.
And because you didn't ask - we don't do all of this in Denmark - in fact I have hardly heard any pop-mas songs all December. They sing carols and proper Xmas songs - and we also do that around the tree.
remember you promised not to be mean about Jenson this evening :P
i just don't get the whole thing. I don't like xfactor so i don't watch it... i don't like either of the songs so i don't buy or listen to them... i'll just live in my coldplay/ f1/ photography dominated bubble and be happy i suppose :)
Things I have learned:
- LCLT also works with the Wii, minus the FBFB. But the 'post comment' button doesn't work in either neither do embedded videos (I tried to watch the live show replay). Not a big deal though.
- The iPlayer app for the Wii is considerably better than the old way of going to the website in the browser.
- If you are offline for a couple of days, you feel a mixture of freedom from being tied to the computer, and loss from not knowing ANYTHING of what's happening.
- I have caught up with 7xFastForward, 1xHIGNFY, the pilot of the series Fringe (unfortunately on the day the series was removed from BT On Demand so I couldn't catch the rest) and the film Flags of our Fathers.
For some reason my computer is still freezing every 10 secs or so, I dunno if that is FF, XP or some other thing.
The question that matters from Cowell's point of view is did the X factor sell more this year than last because of the threat
lou, in my gpm2 game, Davidson got pole, in a Brawn.
I won't say what happened in the race, lets just say it was typical.
People have always acted irrationally over the christmas no1
I've thought of at least three, I should've written them down
I hate that too!
What time does the party start?
8ish {Comment #314}
Sounds good to me. At this rate I'll have had tea by then.
awww that sounds lovely! one of my best friends lives in a village where once a year at christmas everyone from their local church gets together and they stand around this HUGE christmas tree on their village green and sing carols and have mince pies and mulled wine. That always sounds so lovely to me. She was very excited this year cause as they were singing it started snowing.
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/20/live-after-eight/
I understand that but don't tell me this hasn't bothered him, just a little bit
Which brings a huge grin to my face
i have absolutely no idea what gpm2 is... however woohooo! :D Pole is awesome! :D
hmm...
Christmas really is different here. Yes there is presents, but that's like 5% of what is important. It's all about food, drink, good times and being together.
Grand Prix Manager 2, with the 2009 mod.
STOP!
Nacho Time! See you at 8:20!
That's what's missing here
It's not, it's only like that if you want it to be. It dosen't have to be like that
aww that sounds like my ideal christmas!
i'm not really religious at all but the whole idea of a traditional christmas, that's about friends and family and having a lovely time etc really appeals to me...
i may have to move to denmark for christmas next year... :)
lets all get on facebook and make it happen in england! :P no?... okay.
I don't want it to be, it just is. Christmas has become a commercial event for too many, sadly
Our family tends to concentrate on the food, drink and being together. apart from Dad who likes to buy lots of presents. My parents are separated though..
I disagree, as a country it is, but thats only because thats what as a country we are like. If you don't want to be (i'm not saying you you) then don't do it.
Yes there'll always be bits of commercial in our christmas's but you can resist the most of it if you want to
BBC says [via Turun Sanomat]:
New Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen will take part in the Arctic Lapland Rally alongside former F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen.
Does Amy know this?
That's exactly what I have done this year
Anyway...
we resist all.
the only thing we've bought this year is booze. same as the last 5 years.
I'll raise a glass to that
When he was at the Lotus launch there was a Proton rally car and he asked to sit in it and try it for size and was bugging them to let him drive it in the Arctic Rally but nothing was confirmed until now.
Google Translate has made a right hash of the article but it seems to be based on that
That BBC column needs to go
Though the headline is funny:
Kovalainen perhaps the Mountain Rally
The question that matters from Cowell's point of view is did the X factor sell more this year than last because of the threat {Comment #349}
Yes - but not as well as Leona Lewis' in 2007...
I saw this earlier but I've only just discovered it's true.
Actress Brittany Murphy has passed away after going into cardiac arrest and could not be revived. She was only 32 years old. Such a sad and horrible thing to hear so close to Christmas :(
*waves to people in the other thread*
Wow
Chipmunks roasting on an open flame is awesome. Go listen to it at http://drop.io/sidepodcast
That's what I'm doing too
Who made that?
Zoe told me just before I read your comment. I'm guessing drugs. Silly celebrities. So sad :(
Boo for sad news on Xmas party day!
There was a model that died a couple of years ago in similarish circumstances. That was a combination of anorexia and excessive caffeine usage.
At 32 it does spring to mind, unfortunately
:-(
Just seen a photo of her recently - how thin! If not drugs, then anorexia ?
The comment says
This is by Bob Rivers
Reading comments is cheating
Goodnight peeps, off to bed as I am up early and have to battle more snow.
Thanks for the fun tonight!
night Gavin :)
See ya mate.
But that's where all the news comes from
Wow, the BPI says, of UK singles this year: 98.6% were purchased in digital formats
Someone mentioned this a week or so ago but it is worth repeating.
Tomorrow night BBC4
11pm Jackie Stewart: The Flying Scot
12:30am Graham Hill: Driven
1:30am Jim Clark: The Quiet Champion.
Night Gavin
When was the last time you saw a single for sale in a shop? They are all albums...
Night..
Night Gavin
twas lukeh... i shall pass on the message..
yikes. the cd format just died right there.
thank you to everyone!!
(hearts) all of you xxxxxxx
Night Gavin
That's a pretty high percentage though
That's what they get for charging £3.99 for a song and two others that most people don't want
(hearts) to you and Christine!
Also why Blu Ray won't dominate like DVD did
Have you heard his other stuff? Eons ago now, must be 10 years, Simon Mayo played them on his morning R1 show..
They usually have about 10 singles in the shops near me, but they're invariably the top 10 minus the digital-only releases. And sometimes a single costs nearly as much as that artist's album, if the album's on offer...
♥ ♥ s to you and Mrs C! :)
Anyway, I'm popping out... to check on the snow
Not buying chocolate, at all.
Oh no, not me
Not even Minstrels or Chocolate Orange
:)
You too mate. ;)
Though less singing for me perhaps.
Never heard of him
heh :-)
I'm expecting these. If they're not here by January, there's going to be trouble!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foybsDsn5hk&feature=related
I hadn't heard the ones on the drop before though
please buy me some!! :D
:D
Possibly - but sales of these two singles accounted for nearly 1/4 of all download single sales (those that count towards the above figure that is) this year.
At some points in the year its possible to get into the top 40 with less than 10K sales....
Do you have a wooden nose?
:D
I believe that's how the Spice Girls' last album managed to chart...
I just finished my chocolate orange. Need more now. ;)
He he. Clarkson saying it like it is:
"This is the North, where Northerners live."
(Sorry if Lou's behind me and she thinks it;s a spoiler)
Apparently not quite yet, The Register has an article about why:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/12/17/cd_not_dead_yet/
Isn't that stating the obvious? (If it was the South, its residents would be called the Southerners, wouldn't they?)
I heard some people think its actually the south......
awwwwww no it's not a spoiler,
am just about to watch it now so don't worry in about an hour i'll stop being so annoying about it :P
I'm about 20 mins in. It's been good so far...
Surely it depends on where they think the north starts... some think the watford gap, some say Birmingham, whilst for those like Clarkson its possibly Islington ;)
And if you are in the Orkneys.....
North starts in York, end of.
Mr C, are you thanking everyone again? I turns my back for five minutes to write a daily...
Friends on Twitter moaning because Top Gear isn't a motoring show any more. Why don't they just watch Tiff and VBH on Channel 5 instead then?
That's waaay south
we sent ♥ to you too mrs c :)
He did what?
Watford Gap Services, or if you live south of the Thames, Watford.
I was talking England, North of Britain starts in Newcastle.
Just started laughing so hard I nearly blacked out! My vision's still slightly fuzzy...
Nah - North starts at Sheffield, where York*shire* starts, surely?
(wasn't the peoples republic of sheffield for nothing - line of old labour and all that, being the start of the 'north')
Still in the deep south
I know some who would argue that that was still southern....
I think it depends on whether you are talking about 'North' or 'The North'...
Bristol is North, but it isn't in 'the North'
Well, its midlands to me :D
okay i shall be back in an hour after top gear.. no one insult jenson in my absence.. or they'll be trouble :P
Lol. My mum used to organise meetings for London folk who would want to come to Bristol as 'its the west country'. She'd spend a lot of time pointing out that as the other parties were coming from places like Plymouth and Penzance, that Taunton was probably a better starting point, and why not consider Exeter whilst they were at it (it taking half a day to get from penzance to bristol at the best of times....)
My point is that for any given individual, a compass direction's people will always be "Compass direction+ener", at least if they're speaking in English and using compass directions to describe the people.
Quick, now she's gone....
So I can insult Ant then?
I agree with the sentiments expressed by Steve Mann.
Eek!
I'm alright now. It was something to do with Jeremy and an Red Bull F1 car. Saying no more...
Icy wind, patches of ice on the pavement but no snow
#shouldhavewornahat
For me, it depends on whether I'm thinking "North/Midlands/South" or "North/South" at the time. In the former case, I consider Sheffield to be the start of "North"* and Silverstone the start of "South". In the latter, the division is the Watling Road.
* - Steven's argument is settled because I consider Scotland to be its own country, thus meaning any compass directions would be in relation to Scotland, not to England (which is what I generally have in mind when I think in compass points).
Jeremy thinks Ross is a world class designer...
What?
What about the chocolate?
Did you not hear my protestations on that subject?
Thought you had gone out?
:D
Yes but I ignored them
I'm back
The shop is less than 200m away :)
All of them? I havent finished reading the full article yet, but Steve Mann comes off as an idiot who just happens to have stumbled on a few relevant points.
This is 2009 people. Most of what he says may have been true years ago, but he clearly needs some computer lessons.
:-)
I was reading a free accountancy magazine I get earlier, and there was a Q&A with the 'South Wales and South West' rep from something or other, he was going about how Cardiff and Bristol and Bath were so great... I was sat there thinking "well yeah but they are miles away!"
Many people don't consider Bristol or Bath to be in the SW..
Ah. We have one of those (well, ok, maybe 300m here). But in this weather it would be a death wish to venture to it....
So do I
Yes, all of them.
I mean, I like the idea of doing things digitally some of the time but they are just going about it the wrong way and I enjoy buying CDs.
It's still true today for many people. Remember that more than half of all ipod buyers are still purchasing their first portable music player.
I'll keep buying CDs, although I don't actually buy much stuff now anyway.
To expand, I enjoy buying CDs but carrying them around is a pain. So I like having the good quality source available for me to rip it into a format I like on my computer, and in MP3 which my car stereo can handle via SD card.
I do need to spend some time doing that properly actually, my colleciton is a bit of a mess at the minute :-)
He fails to point out that you can burn your favourite mp3's to CD or DVD at will for playback or back up purposes
I've only got a diddy little 128mb player which is old and dying, and my fairly old phone which doesn't have much memory either. When I have more disposable income I'll upgrade..
Point 4. Don't buy DRM'd music = problem solved.
Point 5. I need clarification on this. How is a CD built for your convenience? What am I missing?
I was too harsh before. I regret saying he was an idiot. He doesn't seem to understand the arguments against what he has said, thats all.
It's still true today for many people. Remember that more than half of all ipod buyers are still purchasing their first portable music player.
I'll keep buying CDs, although I don't actually buy much stuff now anyway. {Andy Taylor}
There's no point in me buying digital music until a sensible delivery method has been devised. At the moment, the messing about attempting to get the delivery site to work, the transaction completed, the DRM removed (if relevant - because my computer seems to have a total DRM allergy) is about three times as stressful as buying the album from a shop, bringing it home and getting the wrapper off. In both cases I'd end up converting the sound anyway (I never use anything above 32kbps on my PDA, but like to have at least 96kbps on my desktop), so that step's the same for both.
Plus a CD can be played in my hi-fi and borrowed by my parents and brother. My parents don't use digital music unless it's on YouTube and my brother doesn't have an internet connection (so any digital music would have to be copied to CD before borrowing anyway).
Which, if it's as fiddly a process for other people as it is for me, can't be counted on to work first time (and is more hassle to sort if it does go wrong). With the CD the "ripping" effectively is the backup.
CD's were retailing for £14+ before iTunes started charging 7.99 for an album
Yet they still wonder why people turned to file sharing and the like
Being ripped off was one reason, I reckon
PS. I still buy CDs too, just not very often.
PPS. CD music is still compressed. Just not as much as digitally delivered music.
PPPS. You can put CD quality music on something like an iPod, it doesn't have to be further compressed. The output quality can be better than most CD players that people use.
4. How much music does that rule out?
5. Buy a CD when you are in town, put it on in the car on the way home, use it any other player you have. That wasn't his point though. His point was the restrictions that either exist or are perceived to exist using certain delivery methods.
I understand DRM isn't as bad as it used to be though, is that right?
I buy music on my iphone wherever i have mobile phone signal. Easier than buying a cd. No pants required!
I have to go out for a bit. Back soon.
The #1 reason, I imagine (given that file sharing started in 1998)...
The labels forced iTines into DRM
You can get DRM free stuff now, but it's more expensive [and a higher quality/bit rate]
Morning all. Party over or just being rebels in the daily? Nz estimation of it being quiet at work today was very very wrong. So very busy :(
Hi Amy, yes. Party over [oops, outa time]
Party over. Sorry.
Party over I'm afraid. I would recommend you check the replay though. Might be a few days before the finished podcast is released!
Good for you.
Is gonna take a lot of editing
All new purchases on iTunes are DRM free, you can upgrade your existing songs for a fee. Not necessarily more expensive, but flexiblepricing was introduced that means popular tracks may cost more than previously
I'm glad I know he means trousers! ;)
Ah yes, I stand corrected
Thanks Andy
Was I thinking of iTunes+
Yep. All tracks are now iTunes+
No need to be sorry alia, couldnt join in even if it was still going! Still at work for another 8 hours :)
Change of tack... the Indy 500 has a tradition of having a one-off pace car each year's event. This is the 2010 car:
http://16thandgeorgetown.blogspot.com/2009/12/2010-pace-car-unveiled.html
I'm cross they're trying to make you pay to convert old tracks to plus tracks even if they are discounted....
It depends how much they are charging. If it were a straight swap that wouldn't be on to charge, but it is a higher bitrate..
Watching the short film from this article on YouTube
The creator of the 5 min short has been offered a hollywood deal
Very, very impressive
It's called 'Panic Attack!'
I'm not trying to show off. My point is that he has gone on a rant without fully understanding the big picture. Don't tell me CDs are better because they are more convenient, when they aren't anymore.
I wonder if he said that same things when CDs took over from cassettes and vinyl?
I think it was the pants free comment :)
They are only more convenient if you can't afford the necessary tech to get downloads wherever you are standing.
but a complete pain for any non-ipod users
No, it was that he has the ability to get things where he wants. I don't. I'm happy for him, and a bit jealous..
I still burn things to disk to listen to in my car. I can't remember the last time I bought an actual CD though to be honest. A long long time ago.
Buy elsewhere, there's lots of options now
Other download services are available.
iTunes is just easy to use. the songs i buy i want to listen to lots, and they stay in the purchased section for a bit until itunes has a paddy.
i'm just lazy :D
why? I can convert a song to MP3 (or any other format) in seconds.
I hate the IT department type computer snob attitude, but I have to say that learning how to use the tools/toys that you have helps. My 65 year old Mum (with a brain injury) can use iTunes so it cant be that hard. She needed to be shown how to use a CD player when they came out, just as I had to show her how to use iTunes.
what?! really! how?
i cant do it and it's so irritating
if I had the money, I'd buy everyone here an iPhone.
Okay one second I'll look exactly how. It's dead easy!
Computers don't like you, do they Jon? ;)
shup :D
legend! i've been looking for ages!
the short answer is to change the standard import setting to MP3 (or similar) and then select the nonDRM music you want to convert. Advanced menu should have a 'convert to xxx' choice.
Jon first you need to tell itunes what format you're converting to. Go into the general settings tab and press import settings.
Choose MP3 (or whatever suits you) then right click a song you want to convert and choose "convert to mp3" You can also highlight a group of songs and right click in the same way.
You keep the original file.
But is Jon wanting to sync with an non-Apple mp3 player?
that i can do easily, it's just the converting to mp3 thats the issue
I don't see the distinction? This creates an mp3 version of the file.
I didn't think iTunes allowed non-iPod syncing
Have you got it working? It's in the edit menu in preferences at the bottom of the menu. Choose the general tab and click import settings. You'll only have to do this once.
iTunes will only automatically load your music onto an Apple device. The others usually need manual input from user.
Exactly, once converted to mp3 he can copy onto whatever player he wants.
Note that DRM tracks won't convert.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
Thats awesome.
Star!
I wouldn't know. This creates physical mp3 files that can be synced as you sync the rest of your stuff i'd assume.
I didn't know that
But I've only ever had iPods
smiley stamp for Bassano (and others)
Me too. I'd imagine it's like dragging the files onto a usb stick?
Mini, Classic, then iPhone
for most of them, yes.
