It is supposedly the shortest day of the year today, which means that after today, the evenings will be getting lighter again. This is good as seeing the darkness come in before 4pm each day is not much fun at all! It also means we are really into Christmas, and the F1 news should be slowing down. Good stuff! Meanwhile, here is what we're talking about today:

  • It was the Sidepodcast Christmas Party last night where we handed out a bunch of awards for good and bad performance throughout the year, drank some wine, pulled some crackers and sang a Christmas Carol. Check out the replay which should be available soonish, and the edited show will be along later.
  • Our displaced F1 Debrief that was recorded live on Saturday was edited yesterday, so you can listen to that here. We discuss all manner of things, including the new teams and their signings, plus Michael Schumacher and his future. I remember the days when retirement was retirement!
  • Guest writer, (or should that be guest artist?) Stuart Taylor shared a great season review with us in the form of some illustrations. I am jealous of anyone who can draw like that and particularly like the depiction of Bernie Ecclestone. Head on over and have a look, and why not rate the post?

That'll do it for now. It's Monday again, but the holidays are drawing near, if you are not in them already. Let us know what you're up to and I'll see you in the comments.

Working! Then wrapping presents, which I ought to have done over the weekend really. I have Wednesday off.

I suspect making lots of tea. Tidying. Sidestepping the requests for a tree or decorations......

Right not though I'm going to try and persuade a small baby that it is time to sleep, so that I can!

    Night all.

hello monday. i forgot to ask, what did dc get up on top gear?

They were doing an art thing and they had him in a parked Red Bull holding the engine at constant revs while paint balls were fed into the air inlet and they shot out the exhaust on to a panel Clarkson was holding. I don't see how they got past the valves so I assume it was faked.

Then they sprayed his car in McLaren aerodynamic paint and sent him out to do a couple of laps to get a pattern on it.

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 00:39

But minutes after I asked for no spoilers?

I think that is unreasonable. No spoilers during the live show is fine but anyone who really wanted to see it without spoilers has had time. Last week there was a program shown an hour later in Scotland than England and people started to discuss it in the comments. Lou wanted to stop people discussing it for my benefit but I believe live comments are a great idea so I told them to carry on.

  • Jon Waldock21/12/2009 at 00:39

the problem with top gear is it's just like watching the same program over and over. i think dave ruined it for me.

Dave has ruined it a bit. When I'm at Dad's and its just us there he puts Dave on, invariably it is TG and obviously I've seen them all before (sometimes more than once) whereas he's maybe seen it once or not at all. I get bored easily with things I've seen before and it really doesn't help watching several in one sitting.

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 00:43

  • Pat W21/12/2009 at 00:57

i like that no-one remembered to ask me about the secret thing.

was that the thing at the end, or was it the super commenty thing that doesn't break?

  • me21/12/2009 at 00:58

that's not fair... this is the second time you've mentioned it and not said anything... it better be super and all types of awesome when you finally talk about it :P

    Ahhhh. I see. :)

Meanwhile, from Maurice Hamilton on Twitter:

spent the evening in Eddie Irivine's new pad in Northern Ireland. Confirmed my belief he's the smartest F1 driver I ever met.

I would agree to some extent (he got rich thanks to smartly investing his F1 wages), but he says the stupidest things sometimes...

  • Alianora La Canta21/12/2009 at 01:08

    sounds... fun? :) {Comment #89}

It might have been if the recipes weren't in nearly-indecipherable recipe books. Mum doesn't seem to understand why I'm having difficulties...

    smarter than JYS?

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 01:12

I would agree to some extent (he got rich thanks to smartly investing his F1 wages), but he says the stupidest things sometimes...

He made a million from nothing before he ever sat in an F1 car. He almost knocked back his first F1 offer because he figured he could make more staying in Japan

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 01:12

    smarter than JYS?

    i guess so?

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 01:12

    Definitely not

    ...really?! Wow.

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 01:15

    ...really?! Wow.

Young European single-seater drivers in Japan at that time were paid a lot and Irvine like playing the markets and was really good at it.

  • lou21/12/2009 at 01:16

i think it's time for an update...

31 days before the 50 day count down can begin!! :D

Young European single-seater drivers in Japan at that time were paid a lot and Irvine like playing the markets and was really good at it.

Japan F3 used to be HUGE. I remember Ralf drove there too pre-F1. That's gone now.

you'll be wanted a spa countdown next.

  • Lorenzo21/12/2009 at 01:19

    Hi all!!

but aren't we glad Irvine's ego took over and he did accept a pay cut to get his first F1 drive...otherwise we wouldn't have seen that awesome battle whilst un-lapping himself from Senna @ Suzuka

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 01:19

I didn't realise the count was so low. I need ountdowns more often ;)

:( It's AGES!! January seems like flipping ages away to me....

  • lou21/12/2009 at 01:19

you'll be wanted a spa countdown next.

i can do one of those too? but it will be horrible and long...

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 01:20

Japan F3 used to be HUGE. I remember Ralf drove there too pre-F1. That's gone now.

So was F3000 and GT/sportscars. Irvine and his generation came back with big reputations despite none of them winning anything. Ralf went there and won the F3000 championship. At that time I tought he was going to be really good.

Just a shame there wasn't a camera in the room when Senna punched him in the mouth

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 01:21

Just a shame there wasn't a camera in the room when Senna punched him in the mouth

Indeed, nowadays someone would've caught that with a camera phone

  • Lorenzo21/12/2009 at 01:22

Well that was the days before you tube...and video-phones :-)

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 01:22

Indeed, nowadays someone would've caught that with a camera phone

Unfortunately for Senna there was an Autosport journalist in the room

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 01:23

Unfortunately for Senna there was an Autosport journalist in the room

But if that was on video, Senna might've gotten into more trouble. Especially if that happened now in this PC era.

  • lou21/12/2009 at 01:23

okay... drum roll please... there are officially 249 days until we all sit down and watch FP1 together in Spa...

i told you it would be ages!

But if that was on video, Senna might've gotten into more trouble. Especially if that happened now in this PC era.

Nowadays there would have been a major inquiry about it. It probably made Irvine a load of money in attention, interviews etc

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 01:25

Closer than I thought it would be

Are you kidding? That's nearly a year!! Clearly I'm an impatient kid....

    8 months

  • Lorenzo21/12/2009 at 01:26

Typical Senna though...trying to stamp his authority on someone early on who he thought might be a future threat... how wrong was he on the 'swerve!!

  • me21/12/2009 at 01:27

okay... drum roll please... there are officially 249 days until we all sit down and watch FP1 together in Spa...

    This is true

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 01:28

Typical Senna though...trying to stamp his authority on someone early on who he thought might be a future threat... how wrong was he on the 'swerve!!

I don't think Senna thought he was a threat. I think he was worried that Irvine could take him off and wanted to make sure in future if he was lapped he would stay lapped

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 01:29

alot can happen in 8 months...

I don't think Senna thought he was a threat. I think he was worried that Irvine could take him off and wanted to make sure in future if he was lapped he would stay lapped

You could be right...although, knowing what we know about Senna, he would have grabbed him by the throat just in case... you know, shoot first, ask questions later.

  • lou21/12/2009 at 01:32

    Sounds ominous!

oh no, i didn't mean anything like that... what i meant was.. in days it seems like nothing... but in actual terms of time its ages cause sooo much can happen in 8 months.. :)

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 01:32

I'm quite happy for it to take a while. I'm 30 next year and I am in no hurry to get there.

Hmmm I don't mean that as such. I have more things to do than I conceivably will ever have time for. If it's not fun stuff though, it doesn't make time tick by any faster....

  • Lorenzo21/12/2009 at 01:45

I don't believe that for a second!! Although to be fair, it is one of the few sports that constantly changes the goal posts, so what you used to know doesn't count....yesterday has almost no bearing in relation to tomorrow in F1.

  • lou21/12/2009 at 01:52

With F1, everyone knows different things. It isn't possible to know everything.

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 01:52

    See ya Lou

Ever heard of a guy called Max Mosley??

  • me21/12/2009 at 01:53

I don't believe that for a second!! Although to be fair, it is one of the few sports that constantly changes the goal posts, so what you used to know doesn't count....yesterday has almost no bearing in relation to tomorrow in F1.

relatively speaking though, i really didn't know very much at all. i just new more than anyone else in the pub.

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 01:53

You really could apply that to anything....

  • Pat W21/12/2009 at 01:54

anyway it is again 2am and i am yet to be asleep... #brokenbodyclock

    Night.

I'm on the Sigur Ros and mug of hot chocolate in order to get sleepy.. I had relatively early nights the last two nights where I felt very tired, and then slept in late. Now I'm not that tired.

  • me21/12/2009 at 01:54

night lou and those who are leaving with her.

  • Pat W21/12/2009 at 01:56

I thought I knew a fair amount in 1997. Then I started getting F1 Racing and Autosport and learned even more. Then I went online and was humbled rather quickly.

The racing side yes, not so sure about the business side.

He did make good points about spectator numbers and the cost of attending races.

  • Lorenzo21/12/2009 at 01:57

We all know more about F1 than Flav though

I think Flav knows a lot we don't also...I am sure he would have a story or two to tell.

no question. how many live streaming carol singing sessions are ya hosting though? the mac version is months behind the windows release cycle.

i know it's not prefect on windows either, but twit have far less issues than we've experienced these past 12 months.

Have you considered that it's a bandwidth issue?

shouldn't be. we send a stream to dublin and that gets multiplexed or whatever, around the globe. there are contention issues, because skype needs to download a lot of info and video needs to upload a lot.

  • KerbRider21/12/2009 at 05:33

How could Lotus consider anything other than British Racing Green? I know theyre not British, but they have announced themselves with all this heritage. and now they are considering a yellow lotus?

if these are the things they are mulling over, then the enterprise is doomed to fail.

I suggest pulling their finger out and concentrate on that front wing.

if I were to guess, they'll be in Australia next year. It helps that the stage they used in Singapore came from Australia.

  • Amy21/12/2009 at 06:29

i just hope they dont expect me to pay more like in singapore. They have set a precedent of rock concepts being included in the ticket price :D

Seems like David Richards is bitter over not getting the Renault gig: http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/5402.html

If Motorsport is irrelevant, then why did he want to get Renault? Those grapes must be super sour!

    Morning all.

Mercedes have just confirmed Petronas sponsorship...

Mercedes have just confirmed Petronas sponsorship...

WHOA. Where did THAT come from?! I thought they were pulling out.

  • Amy21/12/2009 at 09:27

Mercedes have just confirmed Petronas sponsorship...

finally, some F1 news I did not see coming!

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 09:27

WHOA. Where did THAT come from?! I thought they were pulling out.

So no Mobil 1 sponsorship for Merc? I'm confused.

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 09:28

Not just that, they're a title sponsor!

So Michael Schumacher might be driving for Petronas Mercedes GP.

Petronas are very shrewd - they also have Valentino Rossi currently on their books. Their marketing team must be top-notch.

  • Amy21/12/2009 at 09:28

So no Mobil 1 sponsorship for Merc? I'm confused.

I thought they were staying with McLaren?

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 09:29

I thought they were going to Mercedes (or staying with both teams). Oh well.

  • Stuart C21/12/2009 at 09:29

So no Mobil 1 sponsorship for Merc? I'm confused.

Will do some digging. Won't be able to do it today because Mrs C has the day off and will be expecting me to be in close attendance.

yep, only a day or two ago I read somewhere that all that will be left for Petronas in F1 is malaysian GP sponsorship ...

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 09:36

...and this is the Monday before Christmas? Seriously?

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 09:58

Just a thought to add to my Mobil 1 confusion - does this make it more or less likely that Schumi's moving to Mercedes? Unless they ended it very quietly, Michael is still under contract to Shell.

  • Stuart C21/12/2009 at 09:59

Have written a quick post but Mrs C has taken massive umbrage - noisy emptying of the dishwasher and general huffiness - so haven't been able to go into too much detail...

It depends on the relationship between Shell and Petronas.

Thanks Stuart. It made me think though... if and when McLaren decides to make its own engines, it now has a dedicated lubricant partner who can free themselves from the shackles of Mercedes.

  • F1Wolf21/12/2009 at 10:04

or on how much is Petronas willing to pay to Shell to buy Schumi out of the contract :-)

money isn't a problem, i'd think - they have Valentino Rossi on their books too. but is Shell willing to s(h)ell it?

Unfortunately for Senna there was an Autosport journalist in the room

    But if that was on video, Senna might've gotten into more trouble. Especially if that happened now in this PC era. {Comment #193}

Yes. A $10000 fine from the FIA would have been just the start...

    would you know when Chinese gp tickets typically go on sale? I know you said you'd never watch a gp in shanghai again, but I thought you might still know this. {Comment #351}

Grandstand Motor Sports are taking reservations and payments for three-day tickets to the pit straight grandstands (Grandstand A High and Low), Turn 1 (Grandstands B1-B4, all uncovered) and Grandstand H (the straight before the hairpin near the end of the lap). However, they're quoting 2009 prices, so the prices are subject to change. The cheapest 2009 tickets quoted are £148 for Grandstands B1-B4 and the most expensive are £418 for the higher rows of Grandstand A.

    Some new F1 rules have been leaked;

"Formula 1 is set to enter a new era as incoming president Jean Toad looks to revise the rulebook whilst remaining completely impartial, oh yes siree. Here are some of the F1 rule changes Mr Toad is said to be considering:

-All cars taking part in Formula 1 must be red. Any car that is not red will be penalised 30 points for both driver and team.

-It is illegal for any team that does not already have a red car as of the start of 2009 to paint its car red.

-All teams must be based in Maranello. Teams will be free to choose NOT to be based on Maranello, but in return will be penalised 50 points.

It is illegal for any team not based in Maranello as of the start of 2009 to move to Maranello.

-All teams must have at least three Rs in their team. Any team without three Rs in their name will be penalised 10 points per race. (NB Torro Rosso are penalised 20 points for inserting an illegal space between the Rs in their name). Also, all teams will be penalised 50 points per driver if they failed, as of the start of 1950, to have a horse as their logo.

-In any dispute between two teams all FIA adjudication MUST find in favour of which ever team presents its case using someone that Mr Toad is friends with."

    Happy Monday

Fortunately, I didn't use an annual leave day last week so my boss let me take it today. Just hoping it clears now with the rain but think it's just going to make it more slippery :(

Hi lou & hello all. Snow is OK, ice sucks. Could not leave my flats this morning as the path, pavement and road are all ice rinks. Fortunately, I didn't use an annual leave day last week so my boss let me take it today. Just hoping it clears now with the rain but think it's just going to make it more slippery :(

You needed to use annual leave because you were unable to go to work?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/12/2009 at 13:32

thank god i'm home!!! snow sucks...

    hi all.

Hi Lou. Buses in Snow == FAIL.

  • lou21/12/2009 at 13:35

Hi Lou. Buses in Snow == FAIL.

what i don't understand is.... if we are able to drive safely, without problems to the station... why can't the bus drive back?... trains i can kinda understand but.. the main roads are fine... don't get me wrong i enjoyed standing in the cold for a few hours and then my long cold walk home but... all this cause it snowed 3 days ago?.. hmm...

  • Janna21/12/2009 at 13:36

You needed to use annual leave because you were unable to go to work?

Yes, it's really annoying because it's just my road that's icy. Once I get to the end of my road it's been cleared. Everyone else has got into the office. In theory I could have rung a taxi or just slithered down the road but I get very panicky. If the trains had not been running or the whole place was under 2ft of snow it wouldn't have to be annual leave. TBH it was a day I chose not to take and was going to lose anyway

  • RG21/12/2009 at 13:36

    hi all.

Hey lou. We've been having sun, which is rare, which is clearing the snow.

  • lou21/12/2009 at 13:39

it's not all bad though... i bought my first purchase from greggs.. lukeh will be pleased :P

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 13:48

    Slush is horrible

I've had to take today off sick but even making it down to my doctors was impossibly slippy. I'm not brave enough to attempt the pharmacy yet. Might send my sister later :P

I meant boo for being sick.

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 13:56

Also when I went to the doctor they convinced me to go back for a tetanus booster which I'm none too happy about.... Stupid hike down a freezing hill!! There's no way that helps anyone get better from anything!

it goes around chairs and under everything except a low sofa.

brushes extend beyond the body to get into corners. the new one may be better, she has a roomba red, which is quite old now.

P-Giggly, your next #GoForOdd challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to get more hours out of your day by making your week 6 days instead of 7. This would make your days 28 hours long. Try it and see what happens!

I've got a question. Do I go to bed later?

  • Alex Andronov21/12/2009 at 15:42

I've got a question. Do I go to bed later?

    Okay I've made a spreadsheet...

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/gigglesweek-xls

I generally wake up at 6am and go to work for 8am these days. I finish work at 6pm and go to bed around 10pm.

I've marked up sleep as black and work as red (yes I know I don't need to work on the weekend but I thought it would be simpler to see).

If I did this I'd be on some very strange patterns. Amy would have to be my friend!

    you are jinxed!

I know! It does this a lot though. Stupid rural thing.

Of course at lunch I was bored because I'd planned to catch up on Google Reader. So I tried to read Autosport on my mobile. Got as far as logging in when the Orange signal went dead, and it still hasn't come back.

    Technology and cold don't mix.

    Yes and snowing!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/12/2009 at 16:16

P-Giggly, your next #GoForOdd challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to get more hours out of your day by making your week 6 days instead of 7. This would make your days 28 hours long. Try it and see what happens!

I've got a question. Do I go to bed later?

Yes of course. Your day would run on a 28 hour cycle.

The snow will have as much to do with that. Snow clouds are very dark, so will block out all remaining light

in truth, all web hosts suck a little. unless you're willing to pay in excess of £100 a month. that's just how much these things cost.

  • Lukeh21/12/2009 at 18:06

Don't know about the underground but several of the main stations are closing.

On Sunday Mum had to change trains because a set of points froze.

Ahh, the points failure. Due to Denmark using a dilapidated old system it happens all too often here!

Says here they only have a few hundred left. Yet I believe they only published a thousand or so?

And to say "In future years the production run will be bigger so this first edition could become quite collectable," is a clever, not-so-subtle, marketing ploy!

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 19:47

I am going to predict that he will be fine and will win the first race. Then he will do his stupid celebration jump on the podium and put his neck out and have to retire leaving Merc with no experienced drivers available and a bunch of disgruntled sponsors.

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 19:49

Crikey. That's some memory you have there. Was every issue of F1 Racing up until end of '07 (when I bought them all). Ha, the seller's face was priceless!

And ja, even though my book has a squiggle/signature from the man himself, I can't really see me going on Antiques Roadshow in 2070 and making a mint.

indeed :( i don't like that Mercedes seem to be introducing a new 'this is what our car could look like next year' thing... it annoys me. Plus they've badly changed the colours of Jenson's helmet.

I don't want to jinx it but... I may cry if Jenson goes from one highlighter pen colour to another with the Mclaren blinding your eyes win shirts as a helmet colour

*whispers* I didn't mind the monster colours one actually. Better than the highlighter one...

I liked the Brawn colours. Worked well with the car and Monster sponsorship.

I think he'll go back to the 'ol Red, white and blue next year though. Yellow is too close to Lewis'

True, the Monster one worn at the RoC wasn't too bad. I uploaded a poorly taken iPhone pic to the drop at the time.

I'll see if I can find it.

The black and white one. Good call, that looked good. If only that Honda went as quick as it looked in testing colours. Shame.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/12/2009 at 20:24

And to say "In future years the production run will be bigger so this first edition could become quite collectable," is a clever, not-so-subtle, marketing ploy!

didn't you buy every issue of autosport for a penny? how collectable can a formula one book be?

A Decent AUTOCOURSE collection might cost a few bob...

Evening all. We've had another car come into the workshop. It's another Type 49, but this one is one of the original spec cars. It's come over from America and is in Gold Leaf colours, but what the guys are gonna do is strip the Gold Leaf and re-paint it in its original green and yellow colours.

And just for Steven - it's one of Jim Clark's cars. :P

The Leyton House looks flatter on top and sticks out more at the side. He was sacked by Leyton House and joined William in 1990 and it looks like both teams had similar strategies for that area.

I'm really cold at the moment :(

Terrified I won't be able to get into work tomorrow at a sensible time. All our snow melted this afternoon. It's now refreezing..... Bad times!

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 22:39

it is indoors. at least according to the video.

Ah yes. From the pics it looked like a balcony

Didn't think he was that crazy

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 22:41

Looks like they may be on the Suth Bank, have some entertainment and some sustenance

Probably best to get indoors though

Is there an explanation for this spreadsheet?

[Of course, it will surely be 'an Alex explanation']

  • Andy Taylor21/12/2009 at 22:44

I've just seen what DC did on Top Gear :D

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 22:45

I've got a question. Do I go to bed later?

    Okay I've made a spreadsheet...

    http://drop.io...asset/gigglesweek-xls

I generally wake up at 6am and go to work for 8am these days. I finish work at 6pm and go to bed around 10pm.

I've marked up sleep as black and work as red (yes I know I don't need to work on the weekend but I thought it would be simpler to see).

If I did this I'd be on some very strange patterns. Amy would have to be my friend!

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 22:47

Are we sick of snow yet?

No, haven't had any, but we have had ice and htat's annoying..

Hmmm I wrote off today though.... I had hardly any sleep, my head was banging so I just stayed in bed. Made it as far as the doctors! Can't really have tomorrow off too.

Plead manflu and don't go to work till after Xmas. You have enough medical training to make it totally convincing

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 22:55

    Hello, folks.

Just dropping by, but Phil Huff of RealBrawnGP had this to say on the Petronas deal:

Today's deal was the biggest one, and was the key to the future. The deal was done under Brawn GP, and took just a small amount of time to shift over to Mercedes GP. It was the lifesaver, the deal that would keep the team running for at least another three years.

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 22:56

Hah yeah I feign illness very convincingly. Plus my boss is not within reasonable traveling distance, particularly not in this weather so they'd never be able to check! You're a very bad influence you know....

If this is true (and Phil is usually accurate with the Brackley boys), that means this was done before Schumi considered a comeback with Mercedes, or before Lotus/1Malaysia could fully set up shop.

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 22:59

That's the deal that Joe was referring to months ago then

We might hear a thing or three about it in the Aside tomorrow then?

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 23:00

Or before BMW announced their pull out

Not 100% sure on this count. Does this mean Petronas were really planning to leave BMW even if they decided to stay? We know BMW's decision to pull out was a sudden one, so Petronas may not have had much heads-up.

  • Journeyer21/12/2009 at 23:01

Hmmm Bassano, can you magically read my mind and tell me where I'd like to sit on an aeroplane please? I don't know anything about planes. Apparently I have to choose.... I've never flown with anyone that didn't make you push in a mad scramble to find a suitable seat!

  • me21/12/2009 at 23:26

If you have a seating plan, I'd sit at the front of the cabin 1st row behind the bulkhead [wall]

    More legroom, I prefer aisle

You should sit near the back because planes don't reverse into mountains.

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 23:28

is "in the cockpit" an option?

    That's called 'The Jump Seat'

It's pretty cool, though a drag on longer journeys

[Most longhaul aircraft have two observer's seats]

  • Steven Roy21/12/2009 at 23:28

If it is a 747 you want row 44 but not at the window. It is the exit row and near the toilets and you get 6 feet of leg room. The emergency exit has a big bulge in it that takes half the width of the leg room from the window seat

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 23:28

    Depends on the Cabin Config

All operators are different, even 747's within the same company may be

I really have no idea. That didn't come out as clearly as I'd hoped. Hmmmm it's an Airbus A330-200 apparently.

Come on Bassano you can pick... You're a Seat Legend!

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 23:36

    25G is bulkhead & aisle

8D, G or J are aisle but not bulkhead [but will likely disembark earlier]

  • Alex Andronov21/12/2009 at 23:36

    Advent recorded!

If you like your incredibly convoluted puns... then you'll like this one!

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 23:36

    Don't pick row 24

It'll be next to the toilets!

  • lou21/12/2009 at 23:37

I spider just fell on me! it feel from the ceiling (i had no idea it was there) and fell onto my arm... this is not my day.

Yeah, the aisle is tempting. My mum would be happy with that. She watched some programme on the tv and is now obsessed with sitting right by the exits on planes. I feel I'm missing out on views even though I know I'll probably just read my newspaper anyways.

Oooh, so don't listen to me as I was just about to say that

Anyways, since my only expertise on planes comes from Air Crash Investigation, I shall say goodnight and check out the blog . Night all. lotsa love.

True. I've flown quite a few times so am over that now. The views don't change much

I prefer being able to get up at will without stepping over sleeping passengers.

    Night RG!

  • Amy21/12/2009 at 23:39

i like to sit by the window and near the front because for some reason almost every flight i have been on has run out of one of the meal options near the middle of the plane. My plane food is very important to me.

There are many Black Boxes but they do other things

:) Whenever i've been on a plane i've always ended up next to the emergancy exit door thing. Which is great because it means you get more leg room... but i'm always terrified i'll have to open it one day if we crash or something, it's alot of pressure :s

Requesting a special meal tends to sort that out and more often than not, you get it first

    Veggie, Vegan, etc

Have you been talking to my mum. She'd tell you that you're statistically most likely to survive by the door.... She's pretty obsessed and fidgets if she has to sit 3 rows away!

  • lou21/12/2009 at 23:42

    i doubt that :P

I have done this also. I booked a vegan one because I hate creamy food and their sample veggie menu looked gross.

ooh dear. See i'm not scared of crashing or anything going wrong, i just get anxious that if something does go wrong and i need to open the door i wont be able to :)

:D hehe i know, it's always been the one thing that bothers me about planes though :)

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 23:47

How many rows away from a baby do you need to be do you reckon?? Stupid screaming brats next to my ideal seat....

The seats marked bassinet are designed for that, depends if the parents are smart enough to choose it

    It's pot luck tbh

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 23:49

Okay I'm all chosen up. Thanks for your assistance! I'm hoping there aren't more decisions involved, my head might explode :D

  • Amy21/12/2009 at 23:50

ah but requesting a veggie meal would mean id get a veggie meal. Bad times! I seem to be the only one who doesnt case about leg room but ive never sat anywhere in my life where i didnt have plenty. #reallyshort

Another reason for not flying - security theatre.

I found out the other day, they are programmed to give false positives every now and then to ensure enough randoms get a 'pat-down'

  • me21/12/2009 at 23:54

I found out the other day, they are programmed to give false positives every now and then to ensure enough randoms get a 'pat-down'

    interesting.

  • me21/12/2009 at 23:54

    interesting.

what do they do when you clearly have nothing on you metallic?

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 23:54

    interesting.

    And reassuring

  • me21/12/2009 at 23:55

    And reassuring

yes. but they should probably have a notice somewhere saying that.

  • Alison21/12/2009 at 23:55

what do they do when you clearly have nothing on you metallic?

Let you go.... It happens to me every time I go near them. They pat you down or if there's only men around, they tend to wave a handheld thing over you slowly. They they say "okay on you go"....

  • Bassano21/12/2009 at 23:55

what do they do when you clearly have nothing on you metallic?

They have had scanners to pinpoint where on your body the metal may be

That and a pat down should suffice, if you pass ;)

  • Pat W21/12/2009 at 23:56

my headping is going crazy here

  • Andy Taylor21/12/2009 at 23:56

There is an old story about the probablility expert who worked out the chances of there being a bomb on a plane as 1 million to 1 against. Therefore the chances of 2 bombs would be 1 million x 1 million i.e. a British billion to 1 against.

So, whenever he flew he carried his own bomb.

ive never set one off, which confuses me

  • me21/12/2009 at 23:58

    the notice would read:

this machine gives false positives every now and then to ensure we get enough randoms

    #classified

Also when I flew to Sardinia, they confiscated my suncream (even though I specifically bought a tiny bottle I could take with me) and then I got sunburnt walking to the pharmacy to buy more when I got off. I should have sued....

  • Bassano22/12/2009 at 00:00

    Even pilots get this

Airport security and Customs people are a law unto themselves.

Never upset them, they have a lot of power over your day

I didn't say anything!! It was in my sandwich bag with everything else like toothpaste, moisturiser etc. They just opted to pull the baby 50ml suncream out for kicks I presume.

  • Bassano22/12/2009 at 00:02

And for no good reason. It's all security theatre - makes no real difference to your safety.

sends a message to the rest of the line? or at least comforts them.

or maybe they just didn't want sunburn either?

  • Amy22/12/2009 at 00:05

i am taking zero liquids with me this time since i have no checked luggage. Cant be bothered with the stupid restrictions. This is why im glad i am going to mum and dads and can steal all their toiletries. Anywhere else and id have to actually make an effort.
