A lovely sunset from our balcony last night

Happy Birthday Andrea de Cesaris! Happy Birthday to Alison too!

Helloooooooooooooo Sidepodcast!  Did you enjoy the Monaco Grand Prix?  Have you rated the race yet?  Heard about the little boy who threw his toys out of the pram?  No?  It’ll only take an F1 Minute.  If that’s not enough, both DC and Jake have their thoughts on it too.  Or you can see and hear remixes of it too.  Wouldn’t you love to get into Hamilton’s head though?

Plenty of action was to be had over the course of the whole Grand Prix, with lots to look back on, ask questions and analyse.  And in Christine’s Rankings, plenty of points were scored by both the teams and the drivers, including a first time score for Tonio Liuzzi.  Have you read his column on ESPNF1 yet?

Great to hear that both Perez and Petrov are OK.  Scary crashes too!  And it sounds like Renault are unhappy with Heidfeld, saying that he has to reach the pineapple of his abilities.  Which is surprising, because Heidfeld is driving like his usual self I reckon?

There’s also lots of pics from the Cahier Archive worth checking out.  And buy some too, because Paul-Henri is awesome!

I suppose you saw Geri Halliwell all over the cameras like THAT WOMAN at the Grand Prix?  Well check out this pic from Cooperman.  He swears the caption is real!

I found a great article about Stefan Bellof, the man who should have won the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix.  What if, I suppose…

Speaking of F1 Nostalgia, BadgerGP found a great pic of James Hunt and Niki Lauda.  Mind if I drive Mr. Lauda?  Speedhunters have a great pic on Facebook of an old Monaco programme too…

Some more quick links for you:

So that’s all from me – see you in the comments and have a great day!

    Great daily, Gavin!

    Seconded!

I still can't believe that Geri Halliwell asked Newey if he changed the tyres! Why do people go to F1 races if they don't know who's who?

I'm not sure what the Spice Girls were trying to teach the girls of the world...perhaps something along the lines of that Justin Bieber girl. Oh wait, is Bieber a boy?

The shuttle Atlantis is about to start its roll out to the launch pad. The exit from the vehicle assembly building at the start is the closest thing to Thunderbirds you will ever see.

    http://spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts135/status.html

I am not going to be around for the next 20 minutes so if it falls over someone can let me know

Permission has been given to the crew to close the payload bay doors so it looks like there will be a landing. The inside of payload bay doors are the radiators that cool the shuttle in orbit so they are only closed when mission control is sure there will be a landing.

2 hours till landing and everything is looking good. In just under an hour we will get the de-orbit burn if there is going to be a landing attempt

Blimey Steven, have you been up all night??

    Good morning :)

    Go for de-orbit burn.

The burn doesn't happen for 45 minutes yet and it is very unusual to get the go so early

Yeah, she was the lady I had in mind whene we did that improv show for Sidepodradio and I was playing the airhead on the gridwalk. The sort of celebrity you dread to see on the grid :(

    I don't have the power.

Usually with landings hardly anyone other than me comments until the last 15 minutes. Until then I am just an alarm clock so people don't miss it

  • Steven Roy01/06/2011 at 06:19

I can't believe at the same time as they are landing one shuttle another is rolling out to the launch pad. Maybe NASA are trying to show they finally have got to grips with turning these round

No. The last one is on its way to the launch pad now. It will be there in an hour and launches in July

    To your back??

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/06/2011 at 07:50

    To your back??

My back is quite sensitive, so even the lightest of things can set it off (cycling position, etc) - on the other hand, I can do rugged stuff and not feel a thing...

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/06/2011 at 07:51

However, I do have a punnet strawberries with me

Fair enough. I guess adjusting your handlebar height is probably necessary then.

  • RubberGoat01/06/2011 at 07:52

Better to eat those than put them on your back eh?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/06/2011 at 07:52

Fair enough. I guess adjusting your handlebar height is probably necessary then.

I've done it already - it's as comfortable as I can get it. It doesn't help that I am quite tall either

If you wear a backpack while cycling, tighten the straps a bit.

  • Alison01/06/2011 at 07:54

I've done it already - it's as comfortable as I can get it. It doesn't help that I am quite tall either

Is your frame too short maybe? I'm not a short person but my height is all from my legs and my last bike had a frame that was too long for me. Makes you sit all weird. I completely didn't notice how wrong it was until I had a new one though.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/06/2011 at 07:56

Quite possible I think. My previous bike - although horrible - had a taller frame.

  • RubberGoat01/06/2011 at 08:09

Quite possible I think. My previous bike - although horrible - had a taller frame.

Mine is a hybrid of a city bike and a racing bike. Since I got it in September I must have done about 1,200 km on it.

Yesterday though, the cycle light attached to the rear went loose and the wheel nuts got loose which meant that the chain came off. So when I got home I tightened the bolts like made and performed a little bike maintenance...

  • Journeyer01/06/2011 at 08:12

    Hey folks.

And that karting helmet cam is a thing of beauty too. A bit disappointed we only saw this in F1 for a grand total of... 2 corners? They should bring it back!

  • Journeyer01/06/2011 at 08:17

And a more optimistic post from Joe:

From what I understand the teams had a meeting in Monaco last Friday and decided that they are not going to race there this year. This was not based on any moral questions but rather on the date that was being offered to them. One can speculate that the date chosen was designed to be rejected and that this is the politest possible way of cancelling the race, without getting involved in the politics.

Not bad at all. And it's that level that Maldonado has to at least match. They're in similar situations (matched up against an decent-paced but uber-veteran teammate), so it's a somewhat fair comparison. Mind you, Petrov took until Hungary to finally be on the pace. So I think we need to give Maldonado the same amount of time as well.

Until he crashed out with Hamilton. But even giving Pastor the benefit of the doubt, he'll need a second breakout race to prove it wasn't a fluke. See Hulk's pole in Brazil and Petrov's defensive drive in Abu Dhabi.

A mate of mine who does some contract work on yas has told me they were warned a few days ago the GP date may change

...can't see it myself though, moving all the concerts and stuff would probably be nearly impossible

Bernie did an interview yesterday that was as good as saying Bahrain will be on. Won't know for sure until this week I suppose

But then Joe says that the teams have refused the date?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/06/2011 at 11:51

A battle will ensue... only in F1.

    South Africa 1982, anyone..?

  • RubberGoat01/06/2011 at 11:53

A battle will ensue... only in F1.

    South Africa 1982, anyone..?

Nah... the teams will roll over and take the money. This will be a proper test for FOTA though.

  • Nick01/06/2011 at 11:53

ooh any more info than that?

He also told me that he me got a puncture on sunday evening ;)

Its probably nothing, just to warn them it could happen i would think.

I dont even know where it came from.

  • RubberGoat01/06/2011 at 11:53

He also told me that he me got a puncture on sunday evening ;)

So Pirelli may have issues then? ;)

  • Nick01/06/2011 at 11:55

Nah... the teams will roll over and take the money. This will be a proper test for FOTA though.

I suspect a lot of the team owners want it to happen so they dont have to do any refunds to sponsors. The team personel on the other hand probably dont.

Nobody is saying too much because they want to claim they 'had to go' in case they are criticized

Dany should keep doing that. The sooner he's out of the picture, the better.

On another note, how I'd LOVE Benetton to return to the team they won their championship with.

    Sorry?

    FTA:

The option for GenII would be to give up on the Lotus sponsorship and find an alternative backer, thus getting Bahar out of the picture and opening the way for a change of name and other funding. This seems to be the route that offers the best opportunity for the team’s longterm survival.

What better backer could there be than their old backer? Enter Benetton.

it scares me that Roger is younger than two of my exes because I always think of him as the elder statesman of tennis.

  • lou01/06/2011 at 14:08

:( oh no! my old dance teacher used to say that after exercise you should have a warm bath and stretch your muscles there too.. it can help muscle pain, maybe that would help you?

:( oh no! my old dance teacher used to say that after exercise you should have a warm bath and stretch your muscles there too.. it can help muscle pain, maybe that would help you?

I think running 7km for the first time ever was a shock to the system! I have warm baths quite often as I'm still making up for 12 years of living in houses with no bathtubs and I'm currently lying on my stomach trying to smoosh my legs into my electric blanket haha. Its actually quite comfy :)

  • Amy01/06/2011 at 14:11

I know! It just feels odd that he's still in his 20s. Maybe it's the 11 year relationship with Mirka that throws me.

much less these days, Tomic was the youngest man in the draw at 18 and he's definitely nowhere near fulltime ATP tour level yet. Long gone are the days of 16 and 17 year olds winning slams.

I know what you mean though :)

Wimbledon is not allowed to be soon. I'm not ready for it.

I am seeing double the ads for it because it's on free to air and pay tv this year here.

I kind of want it to get here since it starts June 20 and that's when we get details of our next Olympic ticket sale. I'm rather obsessing over it so I'd like it over and done with so I can get my mind back :)

It's a bit silly really, because if you're playing on grass and there's no Hawkeye, you can't really do much about it. But here, there's just that tiny bit of dust in the wrong place to use as proof so then they could stand and argue about it all day.

  • Eric the baker01/06/2011 at 16:15

I mean, yeah OK state the obvious much, but it just kind of hit me. Really liking it so far and it's nice to come from a day of work not angry at customers :)

Another nice thing is that now you can go back to your old job and get angry at customers, just for old times sake. :)

  • lou01/06/2011 at 16:25

    This is brilliant!

i saw him when i was younger on tv and he was brilliant, i think it was wimbledon and he had a chair he sat on between shots. Another time i saw him jump over the net with his team mate and hit the ball back to himself. Push ups between shots are another of his favourites. love it!

  • Eric the baker01/06/2011 at 16:40

Does Bahrami have any younger "understudies"? It would be a shame to see this man's style and flair disappear after he retires.

  • lou01/06/2011 at 16:46

Does Bahrami have any younger "understudies"? It would be a shame to see this man's style and flair disappear after he retires.

i'm not sure, ask Amy when she wakes up. There are a few tennis players who, once they retire, do events like Bahrami does however he is by far the best and more loved. There is a whole 'fun' element to the AEGON Masters Tennis at the albert hall though. so i'm sure someone will continue when Bahrami can't anymore.

  • lou01/06/2011 at 16:48

Windows are open, it's just baking hot with a very gross dew point, so the humidity is very high, too. There's just no way around it. 3 fans going right now.

A/C is too expensive to retrofit most public schools built over 20 years ago.

  • Kai01/06/2011 at 18:14

How did your weekend training thing turn out?

  • Kai01/06/2011 at 18:18

How did your weekend training thing turn out?

Wow. Fantastic. I've been trying to recover because it was really exhausting, like in a good way, and I also set up my first appointments to practice the whole process with my friend. I start today with those practice sessions.

It's a great process for problem solving and helping people meet their goals. I love it. It's me. I can't wait to get this going as a proper practice! woo hoo!

  • Bassano01/06/2011 at 18:19

    Fantastic

  • Kai01/06/2011 at 18:22

    Fantastic

It's such a simple technique, but it is really powerful, too. It's not complicated, but it works. And I can see now how all of the experience I have had in my working and personal life, all the different things I've been interested in, including the voice over training, fits perfectly into this work. It's like I've been working toward this without knowing it the whole time. :)

  • Kai01/06/2011 at 18:23

And the trainer himself was great. He was really funny, and really smart, and we got all practical stuff to use immediately, no froo froo B.S. It appealed to my quest for efficiency.

oh, I've been a specialist in dealing with stress my whole life. ;)

But seriously, every life coach specializes in an area, so that's where I'll start and see where it lead.

Yes, the training is short, but now I'm certified, and he packed in everything I need to get started in a whopper of a 2 day program. I was skeptical at first, too, but I can definitely do this.

  • Jordan_F101/06/2011 at 18:34

Oooh we've been targeted by scammers!

Different numbers have been calling us from the US all evening. So I pick up one and an Indian Gentleman asks for my wife. I tell him he's not speaking to her so he asks my name. All I reply is who he is calling from - he says "Windows operating services" - that he's filling out a survey because he's received error messages...

...So I tell him to stop harassing us, that he's scamming us because he's not calling on behalf of Microsoft, that we don't even own a PC and that if he keeps calling us we will refer him to the authorities. He tries to deny all of this so I just asked him again to stop calling us and hung up!

  • Bassano01/06/2011 at 19:07

I picked up the phone one day at my mother's and had the same call. Whoever they are they are not programmed for questions. I don't know where they were calling from but when I suggested that he was in India he denied it and said he was in England. I asked him where in England and he said he was in Manchester United.

Different numbers have been calling us from the US all evening. So I pick up one and an Indian Gentleman asks for my wife. I tell him he's not speaking to her so he asks my name. All I reply is who he is calling from - he says "Windows operating services" - that he's filling out a survey because he's received error messages...

Mum got that one. She shouted at them.

  • Pat W01/06/2011 at 19:45

...I asked him where in England and he said he was in Manchester United.

    :D

They never called my mother again but I think ten minutes of me telling him he was a liar and asking questions he didn't have an answer to was enough to guarantee no more calls

That's pretty much what I did. I accused him of being a scammer and that if he kept calling me I would refer him to the authorities.

  • Pat W01/06/2011 at 19:49

I've been getting calls for over a week from Carphone Warehouse to upgrade my phone, despite telling them I'd already done it

I had a Carphone Warehouse rep phone me on Monday [after several missed calls]

After me telling him to "cut to the chase", "I'm waiting for the next iPhone" and "I'm not some idiot who buys things from cold callers" he gave up :D

Fraud and scams everywhere today it seems. I just got off the phone with my bank. Some very suspicious charges coming through from Seoul. I just had my card turned off and a new one issued. Seems like I'll be without a bank card for at least a week or two now.

Here we go. It's Honda, not Dallara:

"...it is widely rumored that Honda has tabbed its current partners at Wirth Research to design and develop its 2012 aero kit.

Nick Wirth’s UK-based firm has worked with Honda for almost a decade, undertaking development work on behalf of the Japanese manufacturer in open-wheel and sports car racing, and would be a logical fit for the project."

That was in March and rumours of it happening grew stronger during May.

strangely i'm not too sure. I look after them and they look after me.. sharing a flat with 3 boys will be different to sharing with 3 girls i'm sure. Will be interesting to see the difference tho! :)

It will be very different I guess.

hehe cleaner kitchen for a start! :)

    :D

i'm still trying to work out how cooking for 10 people a couple of times a week feels easier than cooking for 1. :)

And maybe messier bathroom, but not necessarily.

I find the cooking itself is arduous and kind of annoying, no matter the quantity.

I think cooking has different effects on everyone. It weirdly makes me very happy, the more i have to do the better. although it does mean dinner is served at like.. 9pm

  • lou01/06/2011 at 23:20

    No washing up?

ohhh true. but the boys usually do that for me anyways :D

Great. Can you make something for me? I don't feel like making dinner.

    Thanks :)

Next year you can visit them, cook there and then leave the washing up behind you

:D he's sooo awesome. i wish you could buy a ticket to a game of tennis knowing who would play so i could def go see him.

he always plays at slams so if you got a ground pass to Wimbledon you could definitely go see him, the ground passes aren't that popular once all the "big names" head to the main courts so you'd get one easily.

Does Bahrami have any younger "understudies"? It would be a shame to see this man's style and flair disappear after he retires.

Novak, Roddick and Roger are the funniest by far when they do charity events, I could see any of them doing something like that when they're older.
