If there's anything I dislike more than Thursdays, it's April Fool's Day. I don't remember the last time I saw a really good, original fool that got everyone talking. However, it could happen, so keep your eyes peeled. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:
- Toyota have dropped their appeal over Trulli's penalty that demoted him from 3rd to 12th. They say that it would be pointless, as they can already see how it would be rejected. One of these days, someone will put in an appeal and see it all the way through to the end!
- Bridgestone have admitted that the soft compound is likely to cause more problems in Malaysia, although they use the word "challenging" rather than "terrible." Supposedly, the hard tyre will be slightly softer, but shouldn't make too big a difference, whilst the soft tyre is going to be the issue.
- Meanwhile, Rosberg is worried about the timing of the race itself, having experienced the later starting format in Australia. He reckons the shadows are a problem, and if it rains in Malaysia, then it's going to be undriveable.
That'll do for now. Don't stick to what I've mentioned above though, there's plenty going on both in and outside of the world of F1 to talk about. I'll see you in the comments.
The traditional Google April Fools day prank: http://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/cadie/index.html
Does have a cute video of a panda involved...
I just wanted to pick up on the comments about the FIA waiting for Button to pit before brining out the Safety car.
Sorry, but this does not make sense to me - under the new safety car rules, the FIA did not need to wait - Even IF they wanted to help Button.
In fact - they could have helped him by brining the safety car out earlier! Remember that when the Safty car comes out, all cars circulate at a reduced speed until they catch up with the safety car - and this reduced speed would have given Button more time to make a pit stop (as opposed to stopping when the chasing cars are running at racing speed)
It looked to me like just a common FIA c-up
But if the SC came out AHEAD of Button, then Button, as race leader, would have had to slow down, which would let those behind him (in particular, those who had already stopped) catch up.
I will watch the race again tonight - but I was convinced the FIA wanted to wait until everyone pitted to avoid ruining the race for some people - not just the Brawns... But by that time the accident was cleared so it was pointless to bring it out...
The safty car only joins the track from the pit lane. If Button is half way around the lap, then he can run at the reduced speed back to the pits and stop before rejoining and forming up behind the safty car.
But wasn't Button approaching pit straight when Nakajima had his shunt? Also, he went past pit entry the first chance he got to pit, so had to do 1 more whole lap before he could pit.
rumours about illegal KERS and protests over at Pitpass ...
and Toyota dropped the appeal
I don't think Mr C cares much for that site. Using phrases such as "the coffin that is Formula One" won't help their cause, either. After Australia, the sport is very much alive and well.
That said, since the teams did not protest the result of these 'KERS teams' in Australia, that result cannot change anymore. If the FIA will make any statements before FP1 on Friday, they will come in the form of clarifications and will not affect previous results. I wonder who is protesting who, though? Remember, only 4 teams have used KERS, and at least 2 are being complained.
Only the results of the diffuser teams are those in danger, since they were protested before Australia, and even then, most people in and out of the paddock think that the chances of that appeal succeeding are very low.
No surprise there.
I hope this isn't true as I was impressed by the difference it made when the boost was used...
Just listening to the Williams Podcast. It's quite good - but Kazuki's voice sounds like gravel running through a crusher!
Maybe the boost output lasted for more than 6 seconds? Not the boost itself, but the activity of KERS boosting the engine.
Before you all get carried away on the wrong thread.

April fool? ;-)
Conficker! :P
#12 - Journeyer said:
Nakajima had his shunt on lap 17
Button pitted lap 19
Safety car came in at the end of lap 24
Nakajima's shunt was heavy enough that it may have warranted the medical car coming out (didn't it come out for Kubica and Vettel's scrap?)
I don't know where the Thursday-hate comes from, but I like to get through the day with "Techno Thursdays" - Techno on my iPod and Techno dancing in my work pod.
Wait... is it not Wednesday today? April Fool Christine! :-D
...Not to mention that they don't want to jeopardise their diffuser by playing politics...
Talking about tyres, just like Bridgestone want us to...
Nico's just being a "Soft Cog" ;-) Seriously though, sportscar drivers deal with it all the time and if he keeps driving the way he does, he shouldn't say things like that or he'll never get a sportscar drive!!!
But they have headlights. F1 cars don't have that. :P
You don't need headlights. F1 drivers need to harden up!
I know it's Wednesday, which means two annoying days in a row!!
I am slightly confused by his complaints, because if there is torrential rain, the race gets stopped anyway. Charlie Whiting isn't out to get them hurt on purpose, is he?
No, but we know of another person in charge who likes inflicting pain... :-D
It does not have to rain. If it is overcast the track may be pretty dark around 6:30 pm ...
But it will rain, it always rains in Sepang an hour or so after the race. But the races used to finish at 4:30, now it starts at 5 :-)
But the sun doesn't fully vanish until around 7 or 7:30. I think we'll be OK.
Didn't the race always finish at 3:30-4 before? ;) I'm still betting we'll see a dry race. :D
oh dear - http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/090401093727.shtml
lol :D
Sunset is 7:22
The funniest thing about the 'Hamilton to Brawn GP' April Fool's day gag on F1-Live is that it's typical of the sort of thing they would carry the other 364 days of the year!
Toro Rosso to use KERS as a 'sophisticated DCA' (Driver Cooling Aid) http://is.gd/q2uO
:-D
Probbly was - although it will take a little while for the race controler to make a decision and release the SC.
All I am saying - to those who suggest a pro-Brawn conspricy - that if the FIA wanted to help Brawn, they would have helped more if they had put the safty car out 90+ seconds earlier. I cannot see how waiting for Button to make his stop actually helped.
The rules on visibility is that you need to be able to see from one marsals post to the next. If you cannot, then the race will be stopped.
(and I'm saying that as someone whos has spent many a day waiting for fog to lift at a Kart track)
Try Techno Thursdays to take the edge off!
Don't diffuse talk of a conspiracy - F1 wouldn't be the same without alleged bias and dodgy decisions!
I asked James Allen on twitter if there was any word about the lack of the stewards report and he replied: "@alexandronov - no, good point".
Maybe he's off to go and ask :)
You know, he just might. ;)
James Allen in proper journalism shocker!
Red Bull's secret weapon: http://www.f1network.net/main/s111/st142375.htm
James is a proper journalist I think. He was the one who phoned McLaren to ask about something during the offseason.
We're in the wrong thread again - I think this was my fault.
(Correct thread now) Yeah, that's what I was implying, that JA hears something and actually checks that it's true before publishing it :-D
Good morning everyone
In 2 weeks time we'll be on our way to London, woot :) (well, I'll be on my train at least)
Yeah I know ... I'm so stoked about meeting you guys. What time did we agree to again?
1pm - sidepodtime. ;)
race strat used to be 3pm in Sepang
:D
Ahhhh!
Scary april fools.. ;)
Oh - I thought it started at 2. Oh well.. :D
I thought so too when I went there first time, and I ended up sitting for one more hour in that greenhouse under the roof of K1 stand :-)
I have a headset! :D
Plantronics headset, £15 from Maplin :D
i was going to ask about a time, i can't remember the discussion, but 1pm's good for me :) it's very exciting :D i just hope i don't get lost on the underground... it'll be my first time navigating london on my own :D
same here. im very anxious about it but im sure it'll be fine :)
I'll be in london for half 11/12 so i have plenty of time.
It's pretty easy to be honest. All you need to do is get to South Kensington then follow the signs.
Although if you get lost - it's sidepodtime. ;) Plenty of extra time to get there. :D
So - where to meet? My suggestion would be by the McLaren in the basement.
Bacardi just sent me my flight schedule to Malaga, it looks like this is really going to happen. I better start believing they are not kidding
:D
good man. my guess was they were waiting to toyota to confirm or retract the appeal, so we should see it any time now.
Damn. Not an April Fools' joke then. Or is it? :D
Nice April 1 gift, though. :P
well, I do hope their choice of airline is just a joke, but I am afraid not :-)
well, will have to go against my principles and fly with airline I really really hate (for good reasons)
given it's the school holidays, are we not all going to be queuing outside for the best part of the day anyhow?
Possibly.
Must remember to take my specially sharpened umbrella. ;)
I spose I better see about getting the day off then!
Yeah.... I hadn't really realised it would be a work day.
It's free, so you lose nothing. If they do anything undesirable to you, you can get a free flight! :D
for someone who doesn't like undergrounds any journey using them is difficult ;) i'm sure i'll be fine. as you say it's sidepodtime :D
there is a Mclaren in the basement?
There used to be - By a resturant/bar called The Blue or soemthing like that.
It's one of Hakkinen's that he binned and broke the front wing and suspension.
lol might be an idea :)
I've got no idea where im going at all :D i can barely work out newport's statiun and it;s only got 3 platforms so getting through paddington and underground should be fun :P
Which station would you be arriving to? It's an easy bus from Victoria too on the C1. But it will take about 3 times as long!
I'm either going to Victoria or Charing cross i suppose. I'll probably go on the underground... i need to get used to it anyway, but i may not enjoy it much lol. plus i think it's like 2 or 3 stops from Victoria...
I'll get creating a couple of maps then. :D
i was 8 when i last went so erm.. i wouldn't know. lol :)
it's near the V&A right?
My journey seems straight forward enough actually.
Newport-London Paddington (train)
LPaddington- S.Kensington (underground)
is the underground station near the train station in L.Paddington?
Yup.
That's good, i can get to the V&A i've been there a few times :) i'm sure i'll be okay :D
Go for victoria - it's really easy from there.
2 stops on the Circle or District lines.
okay, will do :)
V&A is on one side of the road, Natural History & Science museum on t'other
can't wait for it :D should be a good day. really looking forward to it :)
ITV-F1 headline - "Brawn: We will rise to rivals' challenge"
Have they been listening to Eye of the Tiger by any chance?
I asked 118 "why did Niki Lauda retire in the 1982 Monaco GP?" Real Answer: Turbo broke....
They replied...
"Niki Lauda informed Bernie Ecclestone that he had no more desire to drive around in circles!"
That was Canada 1979, right?
:D
I mentioned this was happening soon the other day, but Jenson's design a Helmet competition has started now, he's looking for a UK themed design this year. I know people liked it last year, so i thought i'd mention it ;)
link - http://www.jensonbutton.com/#/DesignAHelmet/
Do you think think he'd like a Postman Pat cupcake emblem on the side?
I'd take that over highlighter yellow any day! :P
worth a shot :P
It isn't thursday its wednesday.....
Which is why Christine said it's 2 irritating days in a row. :D
ohhhh right ok bit slow today....
It's Hakkinen's car from the 2000 German GP I think (it's got the number 1 on it).
Still looks tasty now
Even identi.ca has a news bulletin today:
Identica acquires Twitter
:D
What's a V&A?
What’s a V&A? {Comment #89}
Victoria & Albert Museum - one of the most famous ones in London.
weblebrity is a hard word to say.
Best April 1 item of the day so far!
Qualcomm's Wireless Convergence
So is onomatopoeia ;-)
You'll get the hang of it. :D
Watch the video. Brilliant. :)
Ah yep, gotcha. thought it was a clothing store ;-)
That sounds fine by me - I will have sporadic internet access from next Thursday so as long as we sort out the time and place by then, that's ok!
:(
There's still no Steward's report. If they're really struggling to type it up, maybe they should e-mail me - I've got a Text Processing exam tomorrow and could use the practise...
Are they waiting for the post-Malaysia hearing so that it will be 'final'?
They're going to be waiting a loooooooooooong time if they are - that's not for another two weeks!
Just remembered, sorting out F1 Digest - Malaysia Preview tonight, so if anyone has any short summaries of how they're feeling heading into the weekend, leave 'em here, and I'll try and include them.
already?
Tell me about it!
is your voice/throat less...ergh?
My throat is better but am now trying to ward off the sniffles.
When you get to the transcript part of the Debrief from Sunday there is quite a funny subtle thing between Christine saying: "streaks ahead" and Mr C saying "streets ahead".
I meant streets.
I don't know I think you said something like "if the brawn cars streak ahead". Which is right. But then the next thing Mr C says is something like "if they are Streets ahead". So I think you're both right, but I like the little change in between :)
Could be. I remember hearing Mr C say streets, and thinking, that's what I should have said!
It's not very often that happens, I can tell you :)
Ah. I can't listen now to answer the question... it was around 10 minutes in.
i like that you still believe she going to get to the transcript :)
:) I have faith :)
Although I do think the community transcript wiki Idea might be a good idea for you to embrace at some point :)
Check you voicemail, guys. I have just sent a voicemail using my new headset. I've provided you with some preview quotes in audio form so you can just pick and choose which ones to use if you wish. :)
I have always said I welcome any help with the transcripts whatsoever. There doesn't seem to be that much forthcoming, which is completely understandable ;)
I will get them done, even if it has to wait until I am retired.
i fear people listening to every word i say and then writing it down.
i don't mind you doing it, you know i'm an idiot and yet still married me. i think if anyone else does though, i'll get found out :)
Awww... :)
I know what you mean :)
Not about you... I would feel the same way.
hehe.
Well well, looks who's on Twitter :D
http://twitter.com/FIA_Formula_Two
Yay, the BBC has classic Malaysian GP clips up now.
Wait a minute - they can put the clips of past races, even ones shown on ITV, onto their site, yet they can't use them for an intro for their coverage?
Sure, they have the rights to them now I suppose including broadcasting previous races. The commentary is Croft and hamilton for the more modern ones though although I just watched the 2000 race with Murray, Brundle and James Allen in the pits so who knows.
Funny thought:
Am watching the 2006 Malaysian GP, which Fisi won. They played the Italian anthem for him, then everyone began putting their caps back on. Then the French anthem played for Renault!
Muscle memory for Ferrari winning, I guess. :D
Christine, the April fools thing can't be all bad if even the Economist is joining in.
http://www.economist.com/world/britain/displayStory.cfm?story_id=13395767&source=features_box4
is it that they "can't" use it for their intros, or "don't want to" use it for their intros?
That is a good one.
Have written more on my April Fool's feelings here: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/04/01/dont-be-a-fool/
Shameless plug :)
Another stoopid april fool:
http://www.visordown.com/motorcyclenews/view/rossi_gets_goahead_for_brawn_f1_drive/6667.html
This really is the most annoying day for internet browsing.
Looks like the WMSC has already made its decision about the diffusers, look which team principals the FIA has picked for the Friday press conference in Malaysia:
Ross Brawn (Brawn GP)
John Howett (Toyota)
Adam Parr (Williams)
Martin Whitmarsh (McLaren Mercedes)
The Diffuser Three and the team that didn't protest? Hmmm...
On a more sensible note:
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/01042009/23/q-peter-windsor-f1-pt-1.html
good spot sir!
Interesting......
I would give you an april fools day prank, but sadly I'm three hours and six minutes late.
Wowsers!
I recognise the author of that piece from my ALMS days. Her nickname in the pressroom was "Mad Purple Woman"...
Stuart! You're alive!
Why does she have that nickname? ;)
Just about. It's been a busy couple of weeks...
Book deadline is April 29 and there's 3/4 left to write!
how many words is that?
About 11 1000-word chapters, a 2000-word intro and some interview transcripts. Not a great deal – but other jobs keep arriving, y'see...
that excuse is only one step removed from "i blame steven roy" ;)
Can you not come up with the good ol 'The Dog ate it'?
All the classics don't work in these days and ages.
a whole laptop?
Thats my point. You can't say that any more. Its got to me more original.
the dog ate my netbook?
Try explaining that to Ollie who turned up for the Wednesday Night Quiz last night.
I'm sorry, but that is hilarious Ollie.
:) that's brilliant :D
in my english class last year the most common excuse for not getting homework done on time was either 'my printer is broken' or 'i tried to print it at school but it turns out my USB broke on the way to school' or something along those lines. lol i'm just pleased i never had to use those excuses :)
That's why you're the prefect ;-)
Hi all, don't know if it's been mentioned the only April fool I've seen was in the "Mail" about the BMW that locks onto the car in front via a magnet, der. I've only just got out of hospital so not seen much, whats been going on?
:D
I remember one April Fools joke that had almost the entirety of F1-loving Holland on.
If you remember the 2000 and 2001 seasons, you'll probably recall Jos Verstappen at the Arrows team. 2000 was a pretty good year for the team mostly thanks to Jos who bagged a good couple of points despite the car being moderatly reliable and its performance being inconsistent. Also, having Pedalo as the other driver meant there was plenty of experience between the 2 of them.
So after that reasonably good season on came 2001 and the most memorable race of that season: the Malaysian Grand Prix, which was the second event that year.
Monsoon rains poured down onto the circuit and saw Jos in what could have been the race of his life.
I'm not completely sure but I think he may have run in second at some point, but he certainly was in a monumental battle with McLaren's Hakkinen and and Jordan's Frentzen for the remaining podium spots. (I'm sure youtube has some videos on that race.)
Eventually he even missed out on points because a late pit stop saw him fall back to an eventual 7th, just outside the points back then. The team even appologised to him for having him make that final stop which wasn't part of the original plan.
Anyhoo, the paddock was firmly impressed with his performance as could be concluded from comments and interviews post race. Even race winner Schumacher gave him a plug at the press conference, which turned out to be the seed from which the April Fool's joke would grow.
Two weeks later saw Brazil host the third round of the championship and the Dutch television's F1-crew saw fit to use Jos' performance as a part of their joke. On air during what I think was quali, they spread the rumour that Ferrari would have been interested to sign Jos as their second driver in the near future (hence Michael mentioning Jos' performance at te Malaysian press conference). They even got Jos himself and his management involved! They kept bringing up the rumour during the rest of the weekend and even held a special mock-interview with his manager back in the studio.
Of course many of the Dutch audience were thrilled at this news of their favourite driver getting a second chance (my dad and I included) but obviously found out it was just an April Fool's joke a day later.
you were in hospital?
I'm loving that one.
Not having a dog, the best I could usually manage was "The cat stood on it." And it was (sort of) true once – Jasmine managed to delete three paragraphs of a DC interview...
Maybe you could say "The cat ate my mouse" ?
:D
:D
Every day I hear that one. Only works once though, so I don't know why the keep trying.
:D
If you own an HP printer I guess you could use the excuse as many times as you like... :-D
Hey!!
I own a HP printer. And it;s only broken 70% of the time!
i have a HP printer... what's wrong with them? it's print quality for photos is brilliant.
Nothing... They print great pictures. Just you wait until it breaks and you experience their 'after sales service ' ;-)
oh... i look forward to that then :)
Woot, I now have a Brawn GP style car in GRID on the xbox 360. :D
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00548-jpg
You can unlock real life sponsors to put on your car. I noticed another car with Virgin sponsor on it... wonder if I can unlock that...
Mine occasionally declines to acknowledge the existence of the Mac, even though it's only 5cm away (granted, the wifi router is in a different room).
Hi guys.
Have anyone the link for THIS game?
Malaysia Preview comment for me:
The Australian GP was like a dream. I feel like Malaysia is the pinch that's going to wake us all up. We'll see if Red Bull really is the closest contenders to the Brawn GP cars, we'll see if McLaren have any pace, and we'll see if KERS really does make a difference in a more traditional circuit. Hopefully the new tighter field will mean more overtaking and more action for this year's Malaysian GP.
http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2009/03/26/235410/competition-play-our-f1-racing-game-and-win-a-silverstone-driving.htm
If you can beat me then i will be very impressed, we need proof of such beating though!
Thanks, Jon ;)
I have to say that I need some practice. 0:31:456 will be hard to beat right now with My Kov´s McLaren lacking some downforce...
Lewis all the way :D
Just watching the Grand Prix again... :-)
Luke, the Grid thing, you're such a copier :P
Except my design is different so....yeah.
can we see it?
Was it you who mentioned it the other night then? I couldn't remember otherwise i would've said :(
I was on GRID earlier and it just randomly came to mind after you'd mentioned it
I really need to get that game again. I'm sick of crashing on rFactor because the frame rate suddenly plummets. Macbooks are not made for games at all.
You know, I have got used to the fuglymobiles, but I was watching the 1989 Season review last night and my wife who is a complete non-F1 fan said that when she thought of what an F1 car should look like it would be those cars.
I was so happy I gave her a big kiss ;-)
erm... i wasn't expecting this - http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/04/01/hamilton-could-be-in-trouble-in-malaysia/
We've had one race and already we have, in my opinion, had enough politics for the whole season. So Trulli may end up being 3rd after all... what a mess.
The photo taken of the Wolfpigeon was taken from a park just down the street from where I used to live in Portland, Oregon. I don't ever remembering seeing a wolfpigeon... then again.
If Qualcomm are going succeed where Dr. Moreau failed, I think they are going to need Elephantcondor.
Ahh modern f1. Where would we be without a simple decision and outcome? :P
wow!
OK... two comments:
1) Why didn't the stewards pick this up earlier?
2) Didn't Toyota drop their appeal? Surely this reporter would not be the only person to know about this and would have informed the team???
Judging by Hamilton's record with the stewards I'm not exactly optimistic here :-(
1) who says they didn't? we have still yet to see a stewards report right?
2) yes they did, but maybe because they knew about this?
Sh...
Sh...!
sorry :)
If he needs a comforting friend, he can always call me ;-)
hehe. i'm just checking. but james allen knows april fools finishes at midday, right?
what i dont get about appeals is that they cost money...which you dont get back, so they might have gone through with it anyway and if this is true then they would have definitely won.
He won't be popular if it's a joke.
I guess it's a measure of how much we respect JA now that we wouldn't even consider that :-)
1) Why didn’t the stewards pick this up earlier?
The way the ajudicators run the sport, I would be shocked if they did.
2) Didn’t Toyota drop their appeal? Surely this reporter would not be the only person to know about this and would have informed the team???
Maybe this is the reason why they did. Why waste your time when the FIA can do all the fines and legal stuff for you.
Because he already is popular?
not in Germany
he is as a writer.
Ferrari's Mantra right there!
it goes on all day? or it doesn't exist?
in my books, he dosent have to make it a joke to not be popular :D
Not every F1 fan reads his blog ... in fact, I would wager that because he was so offensive as a commentator a lot of people wouldn't touch it with a bargepole...
Well heidfeld did say last season 'there is no fun in germany'...
his words!
Then they won't know about it?
Germans are loads of fun. It's just Heidfeld that's a bore!
yeah...? I don't follow ?
it goes all day (at least I've never heard about that midday thing)
If it's a joke, then people that don't read his blog won't know about it.
cheers. i believe this is the article in question:
http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/trulli-strafe-in-australien-sagte-hamilton-die-wahrheit-1092581.html
That's not the point - the point was whether he is popular or not, right?
Not for me.
On the same site they also explained that race control hadn't planned to bring out the safety car but because they suddenly saw a crane on the track they sent it out.
I love google translate:
Yoda translated?
Mark Blundell's got nothing on google translate
ahh, that's interesting. so the safety car was on standby, rather than actually called?
We hadn't intended to send out the safety-car. The message from the track was: Everything under control. But then we suddenly saw a crane on the track and we had to neutralise the race for safety reasons.
That was the reason it came out so late and then the procedure had to run through. Button had to be found, all drivers collected, lapped drivers unlapped and so on. link
Sorry Mr C for the late reply, but yes I've been in hospital today for an angioplasty, everythings fine now though a little sore.
Christine, do you still want some Malayasia preview quotes? I would have posted one earlier but I had a bit of a "Salmon Day" :-(
well your still alive, so your one up on the salmon
thank you!
sounds painful, glad you're ok.
i gotta do mine too.
Yup, please.
OK, here's mine:
MALAYSIA PREVIEW QUOTE:
Looking forward to an interesting race - I think this race will provide a better indication of where the teams lie in terms of performance. I also think that we will see KERS making more of a difference due to the long straights. It's good that the race is on later than usual so we don't have to get up at silly o'clock to watch it - and I'm hoping for rain as that always gives us an exciting race!
Excellent, thanks Gavin :)
You're welcome!
Malaysia preview:
I think the weather may have a big part to play this weekend with the race, and if it does, it'll give us a good idea what to expect from the cars in such conditions. Ferrari always seem to perform in Malaysia so I'm expecting we'll see them a bit more prominently but it wouldn't surprise me if we continue to see a nice mixed field of cars up and down the grid in the same way Australia provided. Here's hoping it brings a good, exciting race with lots of unpredictablilty though!
F1 drivers need to harden up. He's talking about sunset, not night time anyways!
Bernie is putting the pursuit of the dollar above driver safety and Max the great safety guru is sitting back and letting him.
I am not denying that. But when it rains, the safety car gets called. I've sat through those laps.
Steve Rider presenting the football on ITV.
:(
Where's Jake when you need him
On the BBC :D
hopefully in Malaysia :D
Thats another thing, england games are on ITV now? Always thought they were on the BBC but this season theyve been on ITV and Setanta. Hmph.
ahh touche :P
;)
and in return you have f1 on the beeb.
thats very true. consider my previous minicomplaint erased :D
The race has farce-ending potential. But so did Australia, and that went alright didn't it?
Every time F1 is faced with a new situation the worry-warts and doom-mongers come out. Yet strangely enough, F1 always seems to come out of it OK!
I can't be bothered watching these silly qualifiers anyway!
the rumour must be true, gmm are reporting it:
http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/090401193004.shtml
:)
Home games on ITV, away games on Setanta I think...
And Keith...
don't care.
:D
F1-Live looks like it's been designed by a colour-blind 4-year-old. Who the heck greenlit that layout?
It is funny to watch the reaction when Keith is mentioned or comments here :-)
It really isn't.
If I may plug Journeyer's latest race history post though: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/04/01/malaysian-grand-prix-history-video/
sorry.
What do you have against him anyway? Has he dissed your momma or something?
ahh, the man needs a blog :)
ask me at the science museam.
Let's not go through this again. On to nicer subjects. Bunnies and baby chicks or something.
actually, thinking about it... i need a blog.
Oooooh... even more reason to look forward to it ;-)
Pandas and cupcakes?
Sorry :-( Was just curious...
i saw a chick chasing a kinder egg toy today :D
I'm beginning to realise that one blog is simply not enough.
Absolutely. Preferably a panda eating a cupcake.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7975260.stm
heehee, awwwww.
she's not having one ;)
christine's living proof.
Is it just me that's got really bored with that music they always play?
What music is that?
cute pandas like this? :D
Yup!! Aww.
Ooh, baby panda thursday tomorrow!
aww
I wish I was a panda. I'd sleep in trees allllll day, and occasionally fall off.
something to look forward to then :)
Impossible dream advert!
Best thing on ITV nowadays... :D
Techno Thursday!!!
agreed.
although it makes me sad :(
Erm... I shall ask google.
One of my favourite songs in the world ever in my favourite advert in the world ever. :D
You mean the one that milks the F1 failure (twice) of Honda to prove what a great and successful car company they are? :-(
bittersweet symphony by the verve?
erm... why? you have SPC....
No.
mostly so that i can bitch and moan with impunity :)
i'm not gonna really, but it would be fun for ten minutes.
He can't exactly write a blog post on what is bothering him can he?
owning chickens is awesome. they are cute and small when they are chicks, and when they grow up you get yummy fresh eggs most days :) what's not to love? ;) much easier to own than a panda.
The quiz is on tonight isn't it. (Just checking so I don't do an Ollie)
gah!
awww, no?
Not this one then? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB_1gPRCLCo
:P
:D
are you having me on rg?
How can you dislike that advert!
Not having no one on, I'm just checking in case they postponed it for some reason.
Yup - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5odJtMPEd3E
1) It's Honda
2) It refers to F1 twice. I have a big issue with a company that pulled out of F1 for political embarrassment and because they were shockingly awful then going and promoting F1 as a success of the company!
ahh, yeah it's on :)
Yes, that's the one.
Various racing vehicles, an awesome tash and Andy Williams. Does it get any better?
jenson is in it briefly as well...all be it for two seconds...
That's awesome! It gives me a tingle - very powerful!
yay! I'll try not to mention that you've never beaten me yet.
Oops, the tounge slipped out. Remember other folks:
Quiz, tonight, Pitlane Fanatic under Chat
it's him driving the f1 car i'm guessing?
In that case then it must be perfect ;)
yep
Yeah. Let's make motor sport more dangerous than it needs to be. Your comment sounds like the kind of thing people used to say to Jackie Stewart.
I agree with that but because of the start time any need to delay the race is going to be fought by Bernie. So we could end up watching 50 laps behind the safety car just to be sure the race is completed on Sunday
Yes it does.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLOuDbsJNaE Singing in the rain (VW)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZzXHq7gKN8 Steve McQueen in a Mustang
And OK, here's one from the useless idiots:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGngcQb_0qg Honda (Cog)
that's a bit harsh!
At least when they race at night there are lights. It was dark enough in Brazil last year with the cloud cover. The inevitable rain in Sepang and twilight is a recipe for disaster.
There is nothing wrong with them showing off their their involvement in F1. I'd want to do the same if my company had put in that much effort into two separate F1 projects.
:(
It was intended as a joke. Remember, these drivers were whinging about driving in the wet without traction control last year...
you forgot this legendary advert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUKSxsxeBK4
do we actually think they have left?
maybe just a sabbatical.
Only the cog comes close.
So we keep taking needless risks until someone dies and then decide that was too far.
Piquet hit the wall at Tamburello but walked away so nothing got changed.
Berger hit the wall at Tamburello and got away with minimal injuries so nothing got changed
Senna hit the wall at Tamburello.
I am referring to Honda the company here remember. The same Honda that pulled the plug on what turned out to be a winner this year? That's pretty stupid in my book!
Please God (Bernie), stop Honda from returning and ruining another team for the fourth time!
I think a fiery accident is a bit different from a bit of rain.
How can anyone forget
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwRCBHhyrAA&feature=related
;)
i'm not totally sure the team would have been in the same position come Melbourne if they were still honda... the honda engine was useless! i think considering they don't have a time machine they made the right call in the long run.
Also, that's rubbish.
as i argued somewhere else (maybe dan's blog?). if honda had remained involved the car would've been stuck with the honda lump powering it and likely wouldn't have been a winner!
they got screwed by the homologation rules. just maybe they've found a way to get a customer engine, and make the thing a race winner? we don't know what's go on behind closed doors and who still owns what.
thank you, lou. i agree :)
Why? Do you really believe that they pulled out for financial reasons? By those standards Toyota and Renault should be long gone by now...
No one makes an ad like Honda. Shame the same couldn't be said for their F1 cars.
I agree. Tell the man in the pub that - they'll think it was a Honda with a different lump in the back running around out there. I have heard this from a lot of people lately. Ergo, Honda look stupid to a lot of people.
I'm kinda wishing I hadn't posted that now, I've got it stuck in me head now.
Oh. Dear. Oh. Dear.
I'll have a go at the quiz tonight for the 1st time embarassingly
I've been singing it out loud. It's a shame I'm rubbish at whistling.
Don't worry, you'll beat Mr C ;)
Lack of visibility has caused more accidents thana any other factor other than driver error.
The sound of in car with Lewis is drowning it out, thankfully ;-)
am going to lurk and maybe answer a few questions. good luck everyone :)
although i can't login?
April fool!
Join in the conversation on the chat. You don't need to send in answers if you don't want to.
nevermind.... must remember username does not mean email address...
Toyota nearly did pull-out. And Renault are hanging on for longer for 1 reason - Alonso.
Honda felt they could not afford to spend any more money on F1, no matter how successful they would have been this year...
Fair enough... but your examples are not caused by lack of visibility...
Honda were under massive pressure from the Japanese media over them pumping millions into F1 with no return, wile they were making job cuts at their car factories. They had to pull out of F1 to try to save their reputation.
Honda spent too much money and made some horrendously bad calls ... by the looks of things, Fry and Brawn have tried to reverse the team back to pre-Honda days...
hmmm.... okay.
Of course ... and that has nothing to do with the fact that they were at the back of the grid!
you up for a quiz gavin?
I was simply making the point that because something had not caused serious consequences once or twice did not mean it should be ignored.
If you want accidents due to bad visibility caused by rain you can have Pironi at Hockenheim
They have more important things to focus on than F1. That is why they pulled out.
When does the quiz start?
Well if they were pumping in millions and winning nobody would have minded quite as much (except for the people losing jobs of course).
Hmmm... dunno. Watching the end of the F1 and the wife has come home. I need to have crisis talks about today's Salmon events too.
Bingo.
2030BST
is she any good at spot the difference?
Maybe ;-)
By doing what?
What do I win?
I better log in then!
There was a quote that they had made 270 people redundant and Nick Fry said that would take the team back to 2004 BAR levels.
Dunno, but it looks like it's my turn to lose tonight :-(
On the quiz?
But that's just reducing staff because they can't afford them anymore?
(I agree that Honda spent too much money, btw)
No, here!
awww.
Damn. I'm not holding out too much hope for the quiz then. Though mr.c shouldn't be too hard to beat again! :P
But he said "Back to 2004 BAR levels". I don't think that was said by accident.
from ollie in the quiz:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74137
oi!
I need a baby panda cuddle :-(
I'm gonna have to put my money where my mouth is now :D
Back to the number of staff working for the team in 2004. That's all that was meant by the sound of it.
doh. so far steven disagrees with you about safety, and a few of us disagree about honda. you must've had worse days?
Nothing is ever said literally in F1 though.
http://www.autosport-international.com/trade/files/press_images/_MG_0114.jpg
Thought lou might like this, just found it, he's in Honda clothing but still a good pic, and very high quality, and big too!
http://lonestartimes.com/images/TexasTommy/panda_kid_jpeg.JPG
:D
awww
With Nick Fry it is.
Yep. I thought you were on my side in this one Mr. C? I seem to remember you saying that Honda didn't pull out because of money in a debrief last december and that we shouldn't miss Honda as they were in it for the wrong reasons?
That will do :-) All better now ;-)
i don't think they did pull out because of money. i did think you're statement earlier was a bit harsh though.
Even in the context of the car company?
i don't think they're useless or idiots, no.
Well guess what? The laptop has got to the stage that even the recovery discs can't fix it. So it's gonna be picked up Friday morning to be sent out for repairs :(
You're not in the library now are you?
Just out of interest, why do you think they did?
Even though they:
- replaced a succesfull designer with a motorbike guy
- had two deisgn centres working against each other
- earth dreams
- suddenly pulled out of the sport
What do you call that?
Nope, I'm on another laptop at home.
i think they've partially pulled out because of PR requires that they do. also, they made a bad engine and were stuck with it.
Humph. I don't even have one!
Their F1 wing were useless but the rest of the company are brilliant.
the f1 weren't useless. they employed ross brawn.
So you think it's unfair of me to call the whole car company stupid because they imposed bad decisions on the F1 team.
Somebody please tell me why the car company is brilliant. I am curious here.
It's my mum's laptop though, and she's away overnight in Scotland on business, so shhhh. ;)
True. The people making the big decisions were useless then.
You mentioned laptop? What laptop? ;)
There's a big difference between being brilliant and being useless idiots though, isn't there?
P.S: I am on no one's side here.
There is. I don't see why someone would want to be a fan of the company. They just make 'cars' - boring ones at that. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but really, there's no passion in that company and that is why they were destined to fail in F1.
my malaysia preview for digest:
after the mayhem of the streets, f1 heads to a proper venue, a place built for one purpose, to race. and with a proper race track comes the opportunity to figure out who's got pace and who's got to find some.
off-track, for the second weekend in a row it looks like f1 is set for more controversy. the stewards have likely already run out of appeals notices, and we've only seen one chequered flag this season.
Good stuff. You don't like Melbourne then?
yes. however, we learnt very little about the true pace of the cars and kers.
They are putting more effort into hybrid, electric and hydrogen powered cars than anyone else, they are making a particular effort to make alternative fuel powered cars affordable, they have put massive r&d into advancing robotics, they have been prolific in a huge number of motorsports over the years AND they make the best adverts in the world.
Very true. it's the appeal of Melbourne but it is nice to see where the real pace is too. Very technical is that Sepang - I fear Lewis is going to have one of those weekends where he throws his toys out of the cot...
Anything else? ;-)
I just wish they'd put that effort into the F1 team instead of just assuming that pumping money into the team solves the problem!
So Hamilton is back in front of the stewards on thursday then....
Stewards at one race appealing the protest and investigation of another group of stewards.
Great... Just what we need.
Malaysia preview from the RG
April is a brilliant month in general, mainly for the fact that the racing really gets going with Malaysia, China and Bahrain. The race will determine is Brawn's pace was a one off, and to be sure that the disapointing teams, Ferrari and McLaren included, can pick themselves up after by all standards not being very quick over the weekend. If it does rain as predicted, I've got no idea who will win. Fisichella could snatch it if he is lucky, if its dry, again anyone of Brawn, Toyota, Rosberg, Vettel or Kubica could win it. Does it look as if I know whats going on yet?
And it's Hamilton and Mclaren again...
Dude, seriously!
I thought "RG-esque" was for short answers?
Next time on the panel you'd better give us more of this!
Thanks RG.
Not off the top of my head but I'm sure there are more.
I think I am a big fan of theirs because they are one of the few big companies on the world that are taking climate change and the future fuel crisis seriously.
I speak little, write lots.
Loads of companies are taking it seriously too. I work for a company that isn't exactly in a green industry but puts a lot of money into green research and technology. We just don't shout about it much, that's all!
Me too. Hi all.
Are they as big as Honda though? Most companies their size make a token effort but few are actually serious about it.
You say that like it's a good thing?
Ermm... Yep. My company is a big one.
It isn't.
hey ya.
Heya sir. How are you?
EeeeeeVening!
Still knackered after yesterday's stocktake, although I think it has more to do with Australia... :-)
It isn't a good thing to shout about it?
If you do something good, people should know about it. You know all about Honda but may know nothing about my company. I don't think that's especially very good.
I see what you mean, and I agree entirely.
I know I sent a voicemail prediction earlier but I'd like to add a written preview so you've got plenty to use if you want :)
After an amazing season opener the F1 circus now makes the trip to the swealtering humidity of Malaysia. While the Sepang circuit presents its own challenges, the big test is coping with the strenuous conditions. It's hot, humid and sticky but usually a monsoon is never far away! As for the prospects of the race weekend, Brawn surely go into it as favourites once again after their perfect start to renewed life in F1. Red Bull, Toyota and Williams look to be their main competition right now as the "big 4" are struggling to get to grips with the new rules. With the prospect of rain coming, this could dramatically level the playing field and make for a stunning continuation of the championship. In that case, I'd better start learning a rain dance for the weekend!
How's that? Hope it's not too long. :)
I fear the first kers death from the rain. All that energy stored in a battery so close to the driver. That and the fact there will be more spins than Massa on a roundabout.
Thanks Scott. Don't worry, I edit as appropriate :)
Evening all. Interesting developments in the Hamilton/Trulli incident. Who'd have thought it?
Officially bored now!
Nothing to do...
Read everything in the flat...
May have to watch Die Hard again :D
You shoulda joined in with the quiz!
One day I'll remember to.
Gosh you must be really bored if you are thinking of watching that again! :)
Yippie-kay-ay Muddy Funster!
i expressed happyness on one of the shows that the stewards actually backed hamilton. how stupid was i?
They didn't back Hamilton so much, more like ruled against Trulli.
Should I place a bet on when/if we hear about Hamilton getting the 25 second penalty instead of Trulli
Christine, please read this in your best impersonation of Scott's voice.
Best April Fool I've spotted today.
www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=17839
So it's not just an April Fool thing?
it's real.
Oooh .. I thought James Allen was kidding.
Do you think this is because there was condemnation of not just giving Trulli 4th?
That is brilliant. :D
What's the penalty for telling the stewards porkies?
I'm sure all the necessary precautions have been taken to make KERS as safe as possible. Put it this way - if it was dangerous, they wouldn't have been running KERS-fitted cars in the wet in the pre-season tests.
Straight to bed without any supper.
Probably exclusion from the season in McLaren's case
:D
But yet giving the stewards thick rubber gloves to wear under their normal work gloves...
A lifetime ban?
and a 50 million dollar fine
Oh yes, I forgot the fine.
but harking back to my original point a couple of days ago. If they are going to use the evidence that the safety car button light had cleared on the steering wheel .. when do we the public get to see that?
I thought reading and driving was dangerous anyway.
I don't know why they don't have the technology to put the cars into some sort of cruise control behind the safety car so that their speed is fixed
Hmm, Bernie's button strikes again?
Well I have seen Jeremy Clarkson sat behind a car that was being driven remotely so why not F1 cars when following the safety car
Comment catch-up.. On the Museum Meetup I'm hoping to be at Waterloo by 11:50... or 12.20 depending on when I get up. :-) Short hop from there to Kensington.
This website is useful for planning how to navigate London: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/
Another pit limiter button but at a higher speed would do the trick, though it would be difficult for the drivers to keep heat in the tires and breaks.
Top tip! Cheers Pat, and goodnight all :-)
Thats one of the reason they wanted to go to 17" rims instead of the 13" rims they have now.
Less tyre wall to soften and decrease ride height. On the down side - they'll look pretty god awful and they will need to increase the movement in the suspension to compensate - but that will equate to more stable ride height
night sir.
What could have happened in a parallel universe if Honda had stayed in F1 for 2009 :D
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2072
Night, and get a job with better hours.
subscribers only :(
Depends which race. Do it in an Islamic country and you are in serious trouble
Is there supposed to be live timing on the red button for the race this weekend? Also, I'd hope that the on-board is better, but I'll keep hoping.
No, no, Scott, you can't do that.
Aaaaah. :)
not live timing as we know it. just the top 6 i think.
You can't copy and paste something that requires a subscription
That's not too bad I suppose. Better than the situation last weekend with no live timing.
Why top 6 and not top 8 at least?
you can't copy and paste an entire article, full stop.
maybe eight. the mock-ups didn't show the full live timing screen though.
bernie's f1.com was working fine at the weekend?
I found it very slow to update - one update every 2 minutes or so.
There isn't a full live timing screen on red button.
And I think the leaderboard is only on Freeview, could be wrong.
Just listened to the last Panel show. :D
there wasn't, but it has been promised. not sure when though.
:D
sorry, not a full screen. just top positions.
I listened to it at work today. I was gutted I wasn't around to take part until I heard the last question!
For all the info you'd need a dedicated HD red channel button - too much info for a normal SD screen
Not everyone can access a viewable race and live timing at the same time. Hence why having it on the red button is good.
i think i learnt a valuable lesson with that last question - don't ever ever volunteer again
I was sooo gonna do Brazil 2003.
agreed.
?
If I had taken part in the panel, may have got over-excited.
You can still phone it in
One of my workmates is becoming a daddy at this moment. Just got the text from him.
Well - I say at this moment - his missus has been in labor for 22 hours so far.
Ouch. 8O
Really? Hmm, might do.
Isn't that just a kick in the teeth from fate. I buy a headset to join in the fun more, and my laptop has to go out for a new hard drive and repairs :(
Only a new HDD?
Thats something even my other half could change in 10 minutes *as long as it's not a mac...treble it for that*
Ooooooh dear: http://formula-1.updatesport.com/news/article/1238573042/formula_one/F1headlines/Exclusive--Brawn-pace-secret/view.html
-shakes head-
It's the fact that it has to be collected for repairs that's annoying. Mind you when I had that problem last time, it came back 2-3 days later when they said it could take 10-14. Fingers crossed it's that quick again.
At least it's not a gas turbine...
But it must mean something. It's not a GMM story ;)
Ha! :P
I'm looking for some really good F1 blogs. The only ones I really follow are Jake Humphrey and James Allen's. Not a big blog reader, but I'd like to be.
Not one to plug their own blog...
Link anyway please.
Weather.com shows scattered thunderstorms for the whole race weekend in Sepang. :D :D
Okay
The F1 Waffler - Don't expect frequent updates though. May be my only downfall.
There's this great site called F1Minute :)
Oh and dont forget Sidepodcast :D
Perhaps we should make a wiki page.
Thank you, Dom. :D
Goodevening all, i've resisted the doohickey pretty well tonight, have been working for hours, however, now i'm loosing the will to live, so i need some sane talk....i couldnt find any, so i've come here :D
yay!
make sure you leave a gap for journeyer, steven and gavin.
:D
I don't know if this has been mentioned; but it seems that all the teams without the double decker diffusuer have one in the works with the outcome of the appeal unknown for another week at least.
http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/090401100134.shtml
You have to think that Ferrari are hoping the appeal goes their way.
I'm on it!
Speaking of Wiki pages, how about one for the guys at Pitlane Fanatic to store archives of all the quizzes and answers to make it easier to find instead of the forum format on that site?
Well well mr.c, it seems I am eating my words right now. You only just beat me though!
I don't have a problem with that, have to check with them, of course.
don't you already have - http://www.sidepodcast.com/links/ ??
I'd say Ferrari would be hoping that the appeal isn't successful on their side, as that's quite a lot of money wasted if that is the case.
we don't have time to keep it updated.
Plus, there's a nice linky section on the wiki now, and it fits there much better.
i would've happy had you beaten me, and someone else hadn't.
Ever thought of turning SPC into a franchise operation?
that isn't english, but i do not care :)
Lets be honest, she's never going to live it down
ahh okay :)
sidepodburgers?
I'm off now, had fun, bye!
see ya.
You and me both!
night!
see ya, chris.
bye RG
By the way, I take it you guys got my voicemail. How did I sound? :P
Right, here's a first attempt:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Blog+Links
No one get mad if I've missed any off, and please everyone add more, add descriptions, change the order, whatever needs to be done :)
Scott - are you on the Wiki pages? Do you have a login there?
Sorry, Scott, haven't checked yet.
I still DO have my F1Fanatic pages to link to. ;)
I was talking about the quiz, I wasn't going. But thanks anyway :D
i yeah, shoulda read it properly.
Done!
Here's an idea - do you think myself, Gavin and Steven should all post on one blog together? :P
sounds like a fine idea.
Is the Sidepodcast wiki's Favourite drivers and teams page still on it? I can't find it.
We do. sidepodcast
:D
:D
toucheé

I really hope this is an April fools joke, because it is really not that funny.
LINK: http://paddocktalk.com/news/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=105649&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0
Ooh, might have to add myself to that page
Thanks for the link, I'm always amazed at people remembering mine. :-)
I still keep meaning to update the links on it, and now I have something to refer to!
I write notes during every race and post them a couple of hours after the flag as a log of what happened. I hope the last lot were okay, it's always hard to tell especially in the early morning races. I try and make it interesting.
It isn't the same as a live blog. Live blogs are okay at the time but if you're trying to follow it hours/days later, it isn't the same. Stole the idea from Pressdog and he seems to appreciate the UK angle..
hmm
Yeah me too. I'll do it Friday.
isn't the whole of paddocktalk.com an april fools joke?
Wouldn't surprise me if it is true...
Haha! But reading the end of the article, MUST be an April Fools joke.
LOL
thats goood
Hmmm, just looking into the sidepodscience meetup, if I'm going I'd better book the day off work soon. How late do we think we'll all be staying in that there London for?
Hi everyone
Quiz answers and results are up
http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=763&p=5620#p5620
Well done everyone
Thanks
last time i went it was gone midnight. i blame alex.
I see Lou has removed her name from the list of future sidepodpanel hosts. Has someone upset her?
has Steven reliquished his blaming 'curse' now? or is it geniuinely Alex's fault??
Hey Jolly, Thanks again for the quiz it was really great fun. I'm going to see if i can make it next week too :D (i want to see if i can beat Mr C and R.G again ;) )
What time do the pubs shut? ;)
oh damn i didn't think anyone would notice...
steven wasn't there. but it's bound have been his doing somehow.
I ment the Danica part. That last line is pretty funny.
When I go to the wiki I just check through the updates. Otherwise it would take me days to find the new stuff.
This could be my favourite page on the wiki
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodcast+Empire
That's my kind of answer :D
Oooh, missed this the first time round....however....how i'm going to convince the rents that letting me go to london on my own (not the problem) to meet up with a group of strangers (the problem) is a good idea could be interesting...hmm
Thats strangeers in their eyes btw :P
:-D Glad you enjoyed and thanks for taking part (that goes to everyone - you are the ones that make it fun ;-) )
Strangers? Us?
I wouldn't say we are that strange...
journeyer, not sure if you're aware of this one, but on wordpress sites, the author url is usually:
example.com/author/name/
so on sidepodcast, to find all of steven's posts you simply go: http://www.sidepodcast.com/author/stevenroy/
in theory your posts should be found at: example.com/author/journeyer/
cheers for hosting jolly. next time can we have questions cira 1985 - 2000 please? that'll fox her.
I'll change it to "people i've never met" then :D
Hmmm, last bus leaves London at 11.00. That should be plenty of pub time.
my parents were surprisingly okay with it.. but then again i did meet Mr and Mrs C at Goodwood...
Mine weren't best pleased and Im 26 and a black belt
:D
:D
I'm 18 and....not
It's nice to be at an age where I do things like this then mention it in passing to my parents on the phone at a later date. Apparently I'm big enough and stupid enough to look after myself now.
If you're coming and aren't on this page yet, make sure you add yerself:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Science+Museum+Meet+Up
It works. I wish I had known that when I was working back through several weeks worth of posts to find the articles to put the urls in the wiki.
Mine didn't care when I was 18 wherever I went.
Still - being over 30 now *sob* makes it a lot easier to do whatever I want. :D
ahh, shoot. soz. it's in the redesign.
I prefer if we go even further back. Lou got so many points and she hasn't even heard of Ronnie Peterson.
:D
i think dad was more concerned about me travelling on my own tbh... i think the added 'oh and i'll be meeting up with some people from sidepodcast' must have not slipped through his thoughts :)
I'll see what I can do ;-)
lol it surprised me too :P i was expecting to come last.... you still beat me though so why are you complaining? ;)
It didn't take very long but it is obvioulsy a lot easier just reading them off a page like this.
oooh :(
if i'd said "im going to hte science museum...yada yada yada" that would be fine, its just the who ;) thats the problem
When was shared drives in F1 banned?
I want to beat you by more.
@Lou so why did you decide not to host a podpanel?
have they seen this girl?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/about/
You're going to spend the day at the science museum.
What is there to object to in that?
There are going to be 'other peoples parents' there..... (just don't mention that the other people are parents to under 18's... or you can if you think that that might help? lol)
oh...
When was shared drives in F1 banned?
60s ish
shhhh stop bringing it up... i don't think anyone else has noticed ;)
would you buy a used car of this woman? :P
not a clue :)
no, but i've seen how she drives.
*off :P
1960 :-)
I know they existed in the 50s and I know Tony Brooks handed a winning car to Moss one year but beyond that I don't know much about shared drives.
I think the word you are searching for is 'off've'
Shouldn't that be 'off ANY woman?'
*runs... hides....*
They will soon though. I still think you would enjoy doing it.
haha, i'll just bring matt with me, he'll enjoy that kind of thing, although he still works in imperial...must change that...
:D she seemed fine in the sidepod diary she did once.....
Alianora has come up with another really unusual blog post. She is tracking what the FIA check on each car at each race to see if they are even handed or some cars are checked more than others.
http://formula1home.com/forum/weblog_entry.php?e=702
Says the man who takes out engines and puts them in the bath??
shhhhh!!! :P
Unless it's a little old lady who only ever drove to the shops and to church on Sundays.
awesome. hehehe.
interesting. me likes.
There's nothing wrong with the method.
The engine is now sparkly clean on the outside, essentially new on the inside and works beautifully.
You know you want to do it. You can't let Jackie be the only woman to host. I think she only did it because you were going to do it. You can even ask lots of Jenson questions. Imagine Lou's Jenson podpanel.
ssshhhhhh!!! but i won't be funny like everyone else has been... so shh! :P
A Jenson podpanel, now i am interested.....how exactly is this going to work? will he deliver a cake to...oh wait :D
me neither :-) but basically understand that drivers could share a car during the grand prix providing they shared any points won between them. Therefore if the "lead" driver had problems with his car during the grand prix his team-mate could pit with his good car and hand over his car to the "lead" driver so "lead" driver could still pick up some points.
Hopefully there is someone out there in sidepodcastland who can explain it a little better.
imagine if F1 still had shared drives - Alonso + Hamilton 2007
Best way to be 'funny' is to be completely straight and let all the panelists do the 'funny' :-)
I think that was how it worked for Andy anyway.....
You don't need to be funny. The ting about the podpanel having guest hosts is that every show is different. When I did mine I decided that I was going to stay in the background and say as little as possible and let the panellists be the stars. Scott on the other hand turned his into a stand up routine. Everyone is different so do it as you and not as an impression of wht you think you should be. It would be good for your self confidence to do it. We will all be nice to you and in the end you will enjoy it.
That is what happened with Brooks and Moss. Brooks had had an accident in an earlier race and started the race knowing that there was no way he could finish. Moss's car developed problems so the team called both drivers in and Moss took Brook's car and they shared the points.
ouch!!
hmmm..... i'll think about it.....
Oi!
LPG has a point though - Lou, you don't have to be funny, the panellists are there for that. Your job is to keep order and ask the questions.
I'll take that as a yes then
Hands up everyone who thinks Lou should host a podpanel
no... it's an... i'll think about it...
Order? what is this word :D
*hand*
Thanks
just found this on Fangio's shared drives http://www.usenet.com/newsgroups/rec.autos.sport.f1/msg13484.html
seems to be very little written on shared drives
*3 hands up*
*hand*
*raises both*
*both hands*
you have three hands?
2 hands and im using one of feet to pick stuff up...so its a kind of hand....
jolly puts his hand up
:D
I didn't think it would be as many as that. Fangio only started 49 races and in 7 of them he took over a team mate's car?
OK hands down. It's unanimous.
Riiiight.. Envy chimps do we? ;)
Thank God, my arm has gone to sleep.
ah man.... i'll think about it.... when would it be anyway, not that that means i'm doing it. just considering..
:D
Jolly, for Q2, would Rubens be a correct answer as well?
2000, 2001, 2003, 2004
I'm already trying to think of ways to link Jenson and Franck for double bonus points.
He was my answer.
dont forget bourdais
Now adding a broascast stream capture of Murray Walkers Australia Moments 2009.
Should be uploaded in the next hour or so.
When would you like to do it?
Christine is still in charge of the pinger
Good point.
To be honest, I think I'm better off keeping quiet, last time I was losing points as fast as I was gaining them!
emm yes (I somehow didn't carry 2004 across on my spreadsheet)
Will do a quick recalc of results
-watch this space
erm.. not sure... 01/13/09 looks okay to me :P
I was being nice!
Sob!
I'll be the first to mention that Andy has an extremely dry sense of humour, mind....
LPG is glad she is upstairs now....
hehe. he was funny, i just thought you'd be making your own tea for a while longer.
shades of a panda suit here......
Just as well this site works on sidepoddates
i'm not wearing a panda suit! ;)
Time to do some work.
Server needs a rebuild :(
TTFN
see ya.
You know its getting late when your talking to yourself and you calling yourself dude....
Have fun ;)
cya
erm... i forgot about that. lol erm.. if i'm going to do it... and i'm not saying i will... but as long as i have plenty of notice, and it's not during exam time it should be okay...
see ya :)
Nah - I waited until the tea was made to say anything.....
Anyway - I made biscuits today that were approved of and he knows where they are :-)
{red faced}
Steven Roy, Chris Evans and Mrs C all get an extra point
revised scores
Steven Roy 24 points
Mrs C 18+half points
Chris Evans 13 points
WHAT?!?
so before May 15th which is when exams start, plenty of time :D
Surely your exams are over by end june? The season will only just be getting going then :o
my first exam is 11th may but yeah...
Between 15th May and Silverstone basically :D
wow, thats early
8th June is my last exam.. i have like a 3 week gap in between exams...
So the week after Ollie then?
lucky....thing.....gah
Night Flibster
my textiles is on the 8th i think :s but ICT is my first written paper and that's on the 11th :s
Yay
still not enough to beat you unfortunatly
not yay.
erm... what date would that be.. i have prefect training one weekend coming up which will mean less time for work and revision.... not that i'm definitely going to do it....
i have 6 written exams... 3 in one day.. i wouldn't call that lucky ;)
ollie's doing it the sunday after the meetup, i think.
Who gets to tell RG that he didn't beat MrsC after all?
i had 5 hours of exams last year, in my day :D
in my last exam i just walked out, it was resit and my brain was just mush
sounds like a volunteer.
You are SO committed now :D
hmm not sure... it's the week before my textiles exam i think.. and then the week after i have my ict... so ...maybe...
You need training now? :|
ouch!! yeah i get something like that cause i get extra time in my exams... i'm not looking forward to that friday... i have an ICT paper in the morning followed by both my psychology papers in the afternoon, if i survive it, and am able to write afterwards i'll be surprised :D
not committed... considering... i'll loose all confidence again before i do it... if i do it...
when you do it.
Ollie is scheduled for the 19th April
erm yeah... we need to learn about how to assert ourselves as authority figures or something... plus 1/2 the day is meant to be team building... to help all the prefects work well and effectively as a team....
you will eventually, its like RG's singing....maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow...but some day... :D
hmmm, i just remember standing at the double doors shouting at people, now that was a good lunch time
We will boost your confidence
Exactly, no training required :)
so it would be the 26th?... hmm...that's the weekend of my prefect training.. and day before my mocks start... yeah looks like the best weekend i suppose....
hmmm...
Right....i've reached my work limit for the day, plus i need to be up extra early, boo hiss.
Night all!
yeah... we get to do that too... plus (cause my school's all posh etc) they give the prefects a load of other things to do too... we have regular prefect meetings and have to do all sorts... :)
night Jon.
night jon
hmm, but do you get a lunch card which means you can push to the front?
good night Jon
It also gives you three weeks to think up questions. All you need is up to ten open questions that let people talk a lot. You will probably only need 6 or 7 in the show but best to have a few spare in case someone drifts into one of your other questions with an answer. If you need any help let me know.
nope... but the sixth formers don't queue anyway ;)
pah. :P
I'm happy to help out too.
Night all
yeah but they all need to be relevant to what's going on... so i can't really make them all up now....
if everyone helps with the questions who will be on the panel ;) but thanks i may just end up taking the offers of help :)
Night Andy.
You can pick general subjects like what people think of diffusers or KERS or whatever and at the time if there has been a stewards meeting that changes their legality add that in. You can also ask things like Journeyer asked on Sunday about what the most important rule change ever was. So you don't need stuff that is right up to date.
When I did it I thought I would struggle to come up with questions that would be open enough to let people talk but in the end I was seeing questions everywhere.
good night Andy
ah okay :) btw i like how you have all managed to persuade me to do this. very subtle :P
You will enjoy it. I promise you. If after you have done it you decide it wasn't fun then you don't need to to do it again.
hmm okay :)
i have prefect training one weekend coming up which will mean less time for work and revision {Comment #686}
You get prefect training? When I was a prefect, it was basically, "Go there at this time, make sure nobody breaks the rules and if anyone annoys you enough to want to insult or hit them, get a teacher". Your set-up sounds a lot more sophisticated.
Fantasy Racers update
Jenson is now the second most expensive driver with a value of 11.30m
Rubens is now the same price as Heikki - 9.70m
erm yeah... it used to be like that at our school too... then they changed it so that prefects have a higher status than they did... plus they get more responsibilities etc.
i had 5 hours of exams last year, in my day {Comment #690}
I had five-and-a-half hours (including extra time) one day in Year 12. In their infinite wisdom, the exam boards asked me to sit an Ethics paper on life and death, General Studies Maths/Science and Maths P1 on the same day. If the total paper length had been half an hour longer, I'd have had to stay at a teacher's house overnight...
I was fine (and even ended up doing some revision later on), but by the end of the exam sequence, the poor person invigilating my exam needed a bit of a rest...
I have made even more money. I wish I had remembered to change my team before the first race.
should we have an award for who makes the most money at the end of the season?
:-D
would you go through the 478 people in the league and find out who has the most money come the end of the season then? :D
i wouldn't no...
:-(
but christine might...
:-D
heehee.
poor Christine.
i have to find her something to do, how else am i going to stop her talking?
Speadsheet after each race?
It shouldn't take too long as anyone who didn't have both Brawn drivers at the start has no chance.
:D hehe
but what happens if the Brawn drivers depreciate? people will loose money right?
https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=prOWs9OlsmMwEPc-aq6SeKA&hl=en
i think there's room on there.
she forgot to add Jenson and Rubens to her Driver Stats section... :(
ahh, shucks.
Yes but the people who sell them early get a big boost so then you only have to track the people who bought them early then sold them early
just checked my driver values - so far overall they've increased by 9.6m
(if only it was real money)
oh... well i don't intend to swap the brawn drivers any time soon... so erm... i'll loose out?
There are only 316 teams on it and we now have 478
how do you find that out?
things have gotten a whole lot more complicated this year haven't they?
there is a list of the driver values under 'results and stats'
I was really getting in to 1986. leading the championship and winning races was fun. Then in the last race I DNF'd because of a problem with my rear wing. Practise I had an accident so only got 3 out of 7 laps and in quali I had an accident on my first lapso am 2nd last. Fortunately Dan Brunnel's luck is worse than mine and he is last.
took the changes for each of my drivers and added them together
Alex's fault
gotya.
what are the current standings?
agreed.
they really have :) i'm just going to tag along for the ride though :) i'm going to enjoy being 14th while it lasts :)
If I had £40m to play with I wouldn't be worrying about only having 30.4 left :D
on the plus side, your dedication to button is paying dividends.
i'm 15th
hehe it makes me giggle when i remember that last year you laughed when you realised i was trying to beat you with the strategy - keep button in the team, but now many people are beating you with that exact same strategy :P i was just a year too early ;)
ooo i'm beating the quiz master himself :D
let us never speak of that again.
Me 56 points
Al Grogan 43
Alenyaa 36
James Matthews 34
Nigel McGregor 28
Dan Brunell 27 (3 wins - no other points finishes - unbelievable)
Mike Clare 22
Michael Smith 20
Alia 19
Selidor 18 (my team mate with same setups but traditional Lotus #2 luck)
Dom 16
Scott Woodwiss 4 (no computer)
Chris Lee 1
RG 1
We have just had quali for Portugal and only two races after that
:D :D
wow. you're doing good.
lou - what strategy did you have last year?
oi!!
:D
:-D
anyways i'm off to sleep now, plenty of revision to do tomorrow :s night all! x
night lou.
good night lou
going to crash myself - night all
see ya jolly.
Just did the warm up and crashed again
Good night Lou
forget i said anything.
Good night Jolly
We have an engineer in Seattle overseeing some new aircraft deliveries. He's requesting some assistance from different parts of the business to come over in two-week stints.
I've put my name down, may need to check the listener map again for Sidepod Drinks International - take II, will see how things pan out
yippee!
Just catching up with the Fantasy Racers spreadsheet topic, I didn't forget all the above things (adding Button, adding teams). I started doing it, kept it up to date, figured I would republish at the start of the season.
But it is physically impossible for me to go through all that data now. Unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in a day, and even on Sidepodtime, that ain't enough. I really should remove the link, so Mr C can't keep bringing up things I have already given up on!!

I haven't been able to access BATRacer for over a week (or RLB for that matter), which is why my score is so low. I've given up on all BATRacer-related activities until such time as it decides to work again.
Oh Lewis, why do you keep breaking my heart?
If you need someone to talk to, you know who to call ;-)
bless ya. thing is, he's in a rubbish car anyway. he's likely not going to be able to defend his wdc.
I know. I feel like Lou and Lukeh last year.
I really have to say thanks, as someone who has been relentlessly trying to do well at it, you've made me feel so much better... :P

Sorry, Selidor. I was just frustrated at not being tagged as unable to play when my team-mate had been. Your reason is quite clear, and back luck can afflict anyone. With normal luck, you'd beat me even if I was able to play ;)
Its alright, Im just frustrated too! ;)
That pretty much sums it up for me too
Those dreaded words, "I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed"
Are you about to send them to their room without their supper?
I'm going to sit next to them on the couch and not speak to them for the rest of the night :)
ooooh cold ;)
