The end of another month already? Time is just flying, especially now the season has started. Monday is out the way, and the countdown clocks are already showing under three days until Free Practice 1 in Malaysia gets going. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:
- Organisers of the Australian GP seem to approve of the late-March slot, even though they had under 300,000 visitors across the weekend - their lowest ever Melbourne attendance. Does that mean the season will be starting this late in the future, or will another track take over the first calendar slot?
- On the subject of circuits, Abu Dhabi have had to come out and defend their building schedule, but have also said that the tickets went on sale yesterday. I haven't heard any complaints like there were when Singapore's tickets were released into the wild, so perhaps they're already one up on their rivals?
- Finally, Autosport have brought the excellent Paddock Life back, this time the Melbourne edition. My two favourite snippets? Buemi being bemused, and Stefano snapping photos.
That'll do it for now. There's plenty more to talk about with some comments taking an early look at the weather in Malaysia. Not that we're excited or anything! I'll see you in the comments.
I should have put my comment here...
Noooo!!! We can't wait that long again! Surely the late start was due to the new regs?
The season has to start in Melbourne - it's the best track to start at and it's an awesome race as it's always action packed :-)
The late start was so that Bernie could make the races as late in the morning as possible in Europe. I think it worked, so expect to see it again next year.
So long as they get funding from Virgin, I think he's right. Besides, if the Brawns have a huge lead by mid-season ala 2002/2004, most teams will switch off 2009 and focus on 2010 instead, which also have huge rule changes.
Nahhh mate I meant the late calendar start, the time was fine except I had trouble seeing the cars at the end...
But the late calendar start was because they were waiting for the DST move, right?
DST was my second biggest grumble of the weekend (after the repeated apperances of that Cog Richard Branson)...
VIDEO: Honda's strategy of winning through failure - autoblog.com
I won't be able to see this video until much later but it sounds interesting. Are they continuing to milk their supposed success in F1 even though it was a spectacular failure?
An interesting POV of Melbourne - Autoblog.com
I believe this blog is US-based, which makes this post interesting, especially the comments. Judging by the perception and reaction to F1, USGPE are gonna have a hard time winning over the fans...
Just saw it now - and not a single mention of F1 in sight.
But had they truly stuck to this philosophy, they'd at least be enjoying a good year in F1 this year. But they didn't - they let their failures get to them. And not only have they failed their stint in F1, they have even failed in making the right decision whether or not to pull out.
They're gonna need to do a Brawn, basically, if they want to have some appeal. Otherwise, they won't be interested.
You may have all this fan-friendly stuff, but if you're not winning, you're not gonna get that much support anyway.
Singapore really messed up last year. To make up for it this year:
1. They got a 2nd company to help out in ticketing (other than the original vendor).
2. They set up a plan for selling tickets (Bay Grandstand & Walkabout goes on sale later - they're selling the more expensive stands first).
3. They're testing the system! They've made the system available to random 2008 ticketbuyers so that they can load-test the system. Those lucky enough to be selected (like me) can buy their tickets now - 1 week before tickets go on sale this Monday. It's a win-win solution. :D
All in all, they've done a darn good job in the last one and a half years. Long may it continue.
The Car-a-Day blog has a lovely picture of the Brawn today: http://car-a-day.blogspot.com/2009/03/brawn-gp.html
amen
If Button or Barrichello win the championship I think me, Lou, Dom or other Brawn GP fans and longtime Honda fans may just explode in excitement.
I've said it before, I really don't want to get ahead of myself in predicting that though. The win in Australia and 1-2 were absolutely mindblowing enough and thinking now that they could win the entire thing gives me feelings that I can't even describe. But it's far too early to tell personally...
I'd take rubens over Jenson to win.... as it would probably be ruben's most incredible swansong out of the sport... but Jenson winning it would be equally as incredible. :)
Driving lesson time!
Better go get my blowtorch..
have i ever mentioned how much of a fan of honda i am...?
:D
Hehe.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/13-2009-f1-gp-australia.jpg
is kimi asleep at the wheel??
Seriously?
And good morning, BTW...
no.
morning. how's you blog coming along?
That looks like Schumacher!
you think that's ferrari's '09 strategy? swap 'em when no-one looking?
It's not. It died of neglect over a year ago. I don't have the skill or the time to match the ones I have seen here. Besides, I would be devoting less time to sidepodcast!
(rolls up sleeves)
here’s the thing. a while ago christine put up a podcast that you yourself hosted. and we plugged it as we always do. but how did you tell the world that you’d just hosted a rather fabulous f1 podcast panel show?
(it's gotta work at some point)
Look at the graining on the tyres! It should be called Chunking they are so large!!!
Now you're just copying and pasting. :P
Points for effort. ;)
I updated my Facebook status with the link. A guy who I haven't seen for 5 years listened to it. My parents listened to it. Other people commented about it...
I prefer to be here, because with a blog I feel like I am talking to myself. I love contributing here and I love making you all laugh and hearing your opinions on mine when I do that - and I just didn't get that from a blog...
ahh, shucks.
fine.
(goes off to converse with ollie)
Actually, large graining IS called chunking. Kees van der Grint used the term when he was describing Lewis' dilemma in Istanbul last year.
Does that make me an expert then? :-p
Should I bother checking for the stewards report again?
Sure. Worth a go.
no
Thanks Kathi
ForceCast - if you're not into FI so much (like me), you can skip the 1st half and get their usual banter in the 2nd half. Works for me. ;)
of course.
the episode with holly was all about force india though, right?
You're welcome :)
grr!
I think so - but for GP weekends, this should be the norm. :)
Easy now, Christine's already told us the sched - there won't be any this weekend. :)
Correct. But if they have a debrief with Ian and Mo after every race, I might just become a fan ;-)
don't skip the shows with holly though.
ian featured in that episode too and had loads of interesting things to say about the brawn.
I have two up my sleeve - one would be about the chain, the other about the Gonda saga. But I have no time!!!
Of course - those were cool too.
Was it just me, or was the Chequered Flag not as good after Australia? For some reason, I wasn't keen on Holly Hotlips' roundup of the race. Perhaps I just miss Mo...?
haven't listened yet. i notice the new renault podcast is out today too. so little time.
and Williams
Thanks - just d/l'ed it now (workplace hotspots are nice!)
I thought it was quite obvious she was reading from a script, which was when I lost interest
awww man!
i mean "yay", cool that they're doing one this year, but shoot i'll never get through them all.
if you're really bored (and a geek), f1 matrix has been updated:
http://www.f1matrix.it/gp_2009_eng/index.html
What's the name of that one?
So Jenson won cos of a glitch in the matrix?
http://www.attwilliams.com/multimedia
:D
Lots of podcasts to listen too this year.
Thank god for working from home. :D
I have also got the first test ISO of the Aussie GP done now - with the bbc commentary and 5live commentary, also the onboard cameras as a seperate angle with the natural sound and the commentarys. It was a pain to build...
Lou thinks he is the one :-D
The AT&T Williams F1 Podcast
don't have itunes but if it's the same as on their site: the ATT Williams Podcast
The new one isn't on iTunes yet :-(
flibster.tv?
Is on UK version
yup, i have it.
NO!
No, n.. no just no!
Enhanced and mp3
:D
:D
WIll that be available to us? Pleeeeeeeease???
You can download the MP3 or the M4B direct from the Williams site
Not on Viking Version yet :-(
What about from the Willaims website linked by Mr C
I there a way to download the renault one?
Yeah but I want it now and I have to wait for hours if I do that :-(
It may kill drop.io :D
Currently a 8.1gb file - I'm running it through a virtual drive just to ensure it all works as it should *which it actually is at the moment!*
I think Joe Saward's having a day off, or is on a plane to Malaysia :D
I could drop.io it?
Used to be able to stream from the Renault team site I think
No because I want it on my iPod. I'm at work...
I know, but how do I get it from there to my mp3-player?
i think kathi found there's a 2gb upload limit :(
Right, I'm off to play with some Cripple 7s
I could rar it into 1.9gb sections I suppose.
Why does Max keep talking about 'it'?
http://www.ing-renaultf1.com/en/Ipod.php
Download helper in Firefox, save to desktop
Drag and drop onto mp3 player
Not such a good idea, legally
Plus, who can store it on a FAT or NTFS drive?
Thank you
How did you paste in the 5live commentary anyway? did you have to press a magicky coloured button or something?
For > 8Gb sized files the post office has better latency than the network I would guess.
That or Flibster sets up a torrent site!
I am liking that option a LOT. :D
Why not just create a torrent and put it on Pirate bay or sumotorrent etc...
Yep, exactly. But 8 GB - that's quite a chunk, no? ;)
What is this 8GB file then?
flibster's playing chicken with the beeb's lawyers :)
Wow that's an usually large size! I downloaded the race in AVI format and that was around 1.8GB, what on earth is the 8GB used up with!!
Ah I see. I have already made other arrangements (whisper: iPlayer Downloader). :D
Iplayer downloader
That sounds sexy.............
Is it the newest version of Realplayer that it's part of?
Anything downloaded of the BBC Iplayer page only has a 1 week expiry date. On VHS you could store forever!
Never understood why the BBC put an expiry on downloads
Is a program for the Mac user who is unfairly prevented from using iPlayer in the way it is intended.
And Bernie!
Keith's on Radio 4 tomorrow
...But you won't be able to hear the programme until May...
huh?
Would you like your turnip boiled, or as God intended?
and him!
more on that pace, a brawn insider:
"...if we're half a second in front, which is probably where we are at the moment, although we don't necessarily look like that, it is just foolish to just annihilate people all the time"
linkage: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/mar/31/motor-sport-formula-one-brawn-mercedes-jenson-button
Indeed. Once those diffusers are deemed legal after Malaysia, though, they may just annihilate them from China onwards. Driving to a 30-second gap, just enough to get a free stop, is already annihilation, if you think about it. ;)
Why would a senior source give away info like that?
Now apply that thought to Max's idea of a two-tier system in which he swears he can keep both halves competitive.
could've been brawn, saying, it's not all about the diffuser?
ross brawn that is, the big guy, not the team. doh!
Because the half a second gap is common knowledge - that's what most of the teams are already thinking anyway. I don't think we really learned anything new from the quote.
You'll have to differentiate between the two of them now. ;)
I'm calling shenanigans. A statement like that would just rark up the non-diffuser teams and shows their hand too much to the others.
If the car can talk, is it not Knight Rider?
think you're probably right.
er...is there any reason why in ye olde comments there appears to be no... erm comments in this daily thread?
I see 117 comments.
on the main page i see a link to 117 comments... but then when i click to see them i get -
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/where-are-the-comments-jpg
That is weird. I can see them all fine. What have you done? ;)
i don't think your site likes me anymore ;) first the doohickey (which is fine now btw) then lclt, and now ye olde comments... ;)
not touched nothing, honest.
:)
that's strange, i previewed a comment in ye olde comments and it seems like it's back to normal.. but when i'm not previewing a comment i don't see anything.. i think i'll switch to the desktop computer..
Are you using the cacktop you just had fixed?
Stat of the day: What happens to the team that takes a 1-2 at the 1st round of the Championship?
2004 - Ferrari (WDC to race winner Schumacher; WCC)
2000 - Ferrari (WDC to race winner Schumacher; WCC)
1998 - McLaren (WDC to race winner Hakkinen; WCC)
1996 - Williams (WDC to race winner Damon Hill; WCC)
1992 - Williams (WDC to race winner Mansell; WCC)
1981 - Williams (WDC runner-up to 2nd placer Reutemann; WCC)
1968 - Lotus (WDC to 2nd placer Graham Hill after race winner Clark died; WCC)
1964 - BRM (WDC runner-up to race winner Graham Hill; WCC runner-up, but would've won if no points are dropped)
1963 - BRM (WDC runner-up to race winner Graham Hill; WCC runner-up)
1957 - Maserati (WDC to race winner Fangio; WCC had it already existed)
1954 - Mercedes* (team didn't debut until Round 4, but won on debut; WDC to race winner Fangio; WCC had it already existed)
1953 - Ferrari (WDC to race winner Ascari; WCC had it already existed)
1952 - Ferrari (WDC won by Ascari, who skipped round 1 for the Indy 500; WCC had it already existed)
1950 - Alfa Romeo (WDC to race winner Farina; WCC had it already existed)
In a nutshell, every time a team had a 1-2 at the start of its season, it had gone on to win the WDC 11 out of 14 times and the WCC 12 out of 14 times (counting the years the WCC didn't exist yet). In addition, in those times the team missed on the WDC or WCC, it always ended up getting at least 2nd place overall.
That's a darn good strike rate. :)
Right, that's better. Have i ever said how evil my laptop is? ;)
yeah i was. it's been fine recently.. well apart from a tiny sound problem on Sunday.....
Never understood why the BBC put an expiry on downloads {Comment #99}
In no particular order, the reasons are likely to be:
1) The BBC makes money from putting several of its biggest shows (such as Doctor Who) on DVD
2) The programme-makers and sellers (including Bernie) get worried if there are no restrictions
3) The government gets worried about the BBC giving too much value away to taxpayers if there are no restrictions because they think the BBC will ask for too much money in order to give taxpayers that value
4) The government worries that people will replace watching DVDs and similar activities with watching iPlayer, which would give it a lot of hassle from the private commercial sector (especially the other TV channels)
4) It encourages people to come back if/when the show is repeated
5) The service was intended to help people with busy schedules rather than replace people's desire for new content
6) Inertia - BBC had the first service of this type and doesn't like changing stuff if it thinks it works.
it would explain his crash ;)
*cough* i still have 130 podcasts to listen to... :/ good job i am off school for 3 weeks :D
All restrictions on the iPlayer are either because of licences or because of bandwidth - the BBC do not want ISP's to charge them for it as they have proposed!
Iplayer downloader
Is a program for the Mac user who is unfairly prevented from using iPlayer in the way it is intended.
huh? {Comment #103}
Initially, iPlayer only worked on Windows. It's only been recently that Mac users have been able to use the site (and even now Linux users don't get to use iPlayer). I can't comment on how much functionality a Mac user gets at this moment in time, but it doesn't surprise me that people have found a way round the restrictions.
Nico's a soft "cog"...
Why would a senior source give away info like that? {Comment #108}
Psychological warfare. Make teams think that they could have been defeated by an even more embarassing margin than they already have been and you make it that much easier to defeat them in the future because the edge will go off their work, or better still they'll switch their efforts to 2010. In theory, at least.
Here's a strange one for you; your podcasts are strangely helpful alongside a a law assignment. I've been catching up on everything today in the background and i've done 3 or 4 times as much as i had before. ;)
But now people from here would be drawn to your blog and would comment so you would get the feedback you were lacking before.
Wait, hang on... you're convincing Gavin and I to get a blog, yet Mr C can't convince you to get one? ;)
Oi! Don't you start! Glass houses and stones come to mind!
They don't have any sponsors apart from Branson and they want to make it clear to potential sponsors that they expect to be winning a lot this season.
I don't need one. Gavin's only complaint about his previous blog was lack of feedback so I addressed that.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't his only complaint. He did also mention he didn't have time for a blog.
Murray;s first BBC 1 video is up!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/murraywalker/2009/03/my_australian_gp_moments.html
Is this only available if you live in the UK?
Looks like it based on the comments :(
Correct. And the fact that I am having loads of fun here, so I wouldn't want anything to distract from it...
Afternoon everyone.
There has been a huge argument in the office today from what I gather. And I'm proud to say that it's all my fault. :D
It's all kicked off because I've renamed all the server for ease of identification. Each of the servers desktop backgrounds has a differnt F1 car on it to make them easier to identify when I'm VNC'd into several.
The argument is: What is the best F1 paintjob of all time? Unusual argument for a load of football fans don't you think?
I stuck my tuppence worth in via email and VOIP.
1) Gold Leaf Team Lotus - started the principal sponsors off in F1 - also happened to look astonishly pretty.
2) John Player Special Team Lotus - *droool*
3) An unusual one for me here - it only appeared a couple of times during testing. The paintjob that Alonso used at the end of 2006 when he was still under contract to Renault and he had a go in the McLaren. No sponsors, just chrome red and black. Just awsome. Linky to a picture
I'll reveal later on what some of the choices were in the office - some real shockers in there, proving that my workmates have no taste. :D
Good to see Murray back. 5 minutes is not enough though.
Actually the main reason is competition restriction.
Why, for example even podcasts which the BBC owns all the copywrite for aren't allowed to have more than 10% original content (that wasn't on the radio) and if you go and subscribe to a podcast you can't go back beyond this week.
These are just some of the things that the BBC has been forced to do to stop them from "abusing their dominant position in the marketplace". Basically other organisations fear that if the BBC can just give things away for free in an area that was thriving without them then they can dominate the space.
If I put my hand over the back half of the car I'd agree, it looks lovely
If I put my hand over the front half of the car I'd just get lost in all the many crazy wings. That's why I actually like this years cars :)
That link seems to be broken
Not for me
I find that particularly annoying - especially when you go on holiday...
I have to be honest and say that although i do like the clean cars, i loved all the old bits of stuff on the back, trying to work out how that made it faster.
Just come back from the gym. Have I missed anything? :P
Honda have brought back Brawn GP, Ferrari are now Scuderia FIA, Renault have swapped Piquet for a potato in the hope that it will crash less, and the FIA have declared the new Scuderia FIA have won the "FIA's favourite team, even though you all know the winner" - award....
Very funny...
listened to williams podcast, now listening to force india. both have the who playing loudly in the background.
has bernie relaxed his "no podcasts from the track" restrictions this year?
It looks like it. Williams did it, Force India did it, even F1 Rejects did it! :P
Don't get any ideas.
Trying to rip it from the site to upload to drop.io now.
hehe :)
w00t! :D
Guilty laugh. :P
in fairness, bernie isn't likely to be chasing rejects, and they don't have paddock passes to lose. haven't got to renault's as yet.
Don't w00t too much - they've changed their methods - making it much harder... Grrrr
Trying to stay a step ahead of people like you, I guess. ;)
Evil sods. :(
Just went back on that game from yesterday....
*ahem*
Took another second off my best lap on my second go! woot
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/jonwsidepod4-jpg
31.456
:D
It's a behindthescencecast; nothing about the race
True, true. But Bernie is like the little boy who plugged his finger into the dam - it'll just leak somewhere else.
omg.
ahh, cheers.
I don't even want to think about F1 games right now. I was just doing the Spanish Grand Prix on rFactor and my strategy had put me in the perfect place to nick a podium place when I hit the kerb too much on the last chicane which, combined with the Toyota hitting me from behind, rolled me over a couple of times into the gravel.
That's 1 win and three retirements now. Not happy.
So, rFactor has become so real that you have to make excuses like a real racing driver? ;-)
It looks that way, yeah! I am driving Webber's Red Bull though so I guess that makes me a bad luck magnet!
You can now w00t away. ;)
http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2009/3/9106.html
I like this... driver's pop quiz! :D
LOL!
Dropped it already? It hasn't come out yet, oddly enough...
It's still streaming.
Ah... alrightie. Great job, by the way. You must be one of them techie geeks. :D
i'm not sure what to think of the new background image on f1.com... it's just a glove...
Certainly am.
It's amazing what you can do with a packet sniffer, a bit of knowledge and a large chunk of computing power free. ;)
Looks like Jenson's glove to me ;)
Yippp
It's pointing at the X in the top right corner f the browser window. Are they trying to say 'Get off our site?' :S
but... but... how can you tell?....
its an alpinestars glove, and its white with the black thread stuff on it. its almost deff a brawns glove, and i'd put money on it being Jensons
You sound like the digital equivalent of MacGyver. :D
Murays Australia Moments now drop.ioing
It's indicating the number 1, as in P1. Must be Jenson. When I first saw the glove, immediately thought it was his. :D
Yeah, what what he said :P
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayayayayayayayaya.
Just finished my assignment. yay. Sorry, bit out of the blue and not relating to the discussion but yay :)
I've spent a lot of money on my setup - it's not cobbled together from whatever handing around in the cupboard *well.. apart from my HTPC - that was cobbled together. ;)*
i used to spend alot of time with my nose in Demon Tweeks and Grand Prix Racewear catalouges.....i know lots about random stuff like that :D
wow.... erm... okay.
Hahahaha! :D
:D
With your nose, eh? What do you do with your eyes, then? ;)
:D
Now uploaded - you'll need to download it to watch it I believe.
wooo well done Lukeh :D
Interesting insight into the Vettel/Kubica incident by the BBC F1 guys:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7970618.stm
I still stand by the fact that Kubica was at fault.
Simon Arron has finally started his diary for this season
Hmmm... it hasn't come out yet. Odd.
small little unimportant thing, but Brawngp are finally starting to organise their gallery section a little better. instead of just the annoying 'next' at the bottom of the page, meaning that you had to go through all the pages to see if more images had been uploaded, they have numbered pages as well as the newest images showing first. it's the little things :)
WHERE WALLY??
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=77+Putney+High+St,+Wandsworth,+London+SW15,+United+Kingdom&sll=51.464689,-0.21551&sspn=0.002634,0.006909&ie=UTF8&ll=51.464088,-0.215349&spn=0.010534,0.027637&z=15&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=51.463944,-0.215446&panoid=aTUlkjN4ZDh_2sWaOxjDPg&cbp=12,108.79967440625587,,2,17.33307453416148
I FOUND HIM :D (i didnt, but its funny anyway)
linky
Should load up - don't try to play it - just download it.
ooh that is easier. Im still hoping they stop using pdfs and put a bit more in the actual site.... my browser hates opening adobe reader :(
they've been changing little bits over the last few days, it's very much a work in progress. lol I'm still wondering why the domain sometimes changes to www2. instead of www.
its primitive load balancing... Ignore it until they come up with a better method
i have no idea what that means... i'll take your advice and ignore it :D
Load balancing just means splitting the website up over more than one server, so one doesn't get hammered too badly if theres a bit of a rush of people visiting all at once
oooh right. :) thanks :)
That video from the BBC is very interesting. I think that Vettel probably was wrong to go an apologise. I think it probably meant that he got the grid penalty.
sidepodspace update.
NASA seem to move their shuttles to the launch pad earlier and earlier. Atlantis rolled out today in preparation for its launch to the Hubble space telescope on May 12th(sidepoddate).
The stewards as we know are clueless. Two drivers stand in front of them and one admits guilt. Case closed and adjourn to the nearest 5 star restaurant.
I'm guessing you've seen this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7973747.stm
Absolutely!
sorry, i disagree. watching the footage of collision, rather than watching the footage of eddie jordan talking about the collision, i say vettel was in the wrong.
News to me. They really don't get international co-operation. All they had to do was build one international space station instead there is an American section, a Russian section, a Japanese module and a European section. What a pointless mess.
I think it was a racing incident. I thought that at the time and I have seen nothing to change my mind. Boys being boys.
did you watch the footage on axis? sorry, but i've had the discussion three times since it happened and every time i've been having the argument with people who've not watched it from all the angles available.
Must have missed the axis video
http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/03/unfair-advantage.html
to summarise. my take: vettel brakes unusually early, and then comes back at kubica. the overhead shows kubica left a car's width but vettel couldn't slow down a second time to make the gap.
the cynic in me suggests vettel intended to give kubs a slight tap, but the new '09 cars are front heavy and instead of knocking him sideways an unloaded rear tips the bmw into spin.
my guess is the stewards would've concluded something similar and vettel saved them a whole heap of trouble. he knew he buggered it up and came clean.
Just watched the axis video and it changes nothing. Kubica approached the corner on the outside of Vettel and had his nose just in front at the corner entry. Since he was not remotely close to having completed the pass the corner is Vettel's. Kubica seemed to expect Vettel to slow down mid corner and just give him the position. If a driver goes into a corner on such a tight entry it is obvious that he is going to run wide on the exit but Kubica seemed to think that Vettel could enter on the right hand side and still leave a car width on his left on the exit. That was never going to happen.
If anyone was to blame it was Kubica but he was racing for position and that is wha we want so it is a racing incident.
I have heard a few people say that Vettel braked early but at no point was Kubica close to being even half past Vettel. If you are on the outside of a corner and close to level you have lost the corner. Turning in and expecting the guy on the inside to evaporate is never going to work.
vettel braked early and shot out of kubs view, before he committed to entry. why would he think the guy was still there?
sorry, i disagree. vettel was wrong and what he did was right. 10 places is harsh but he gave up the corner and the had a second stab. couthard-esque.
i guess that's what his mirrors were for?
A driver can't just turn in and say he had seen the other guy brake early so assumed he would not be there. At no point was Kubica more than a foot ahead so he could see Vettel's front wheel and wing all the time.
Kubica was overtaking so it is his job to make sure the pass is complete. It is not the job of the driver being overtaken to avoid him. Kubica tried to overtake before the entry of the corner and didn't make the move stick but he turned in as if he had.
he wasn't that far back. anyhow, i've had the same discussion four times in three days. i can offer no more.
Still say Kubica. I mean, the guy went round the outside of Seb and practically left him no room on the exit. Where else was he supposed to go? Vettel's tyres were probably going off but he decided to commit to the corner because he naturally wanted to defend his place. Now with his tyres not 100% especially with them being the super softs, he was prone to understeer. Because of this, with Kubica on the outside he would have had nowhere to go and he didn't. Kub turned across thinking he was ahead but he was wrong. Carrying on from what Steven said, Kubica was too impatient to get the move finished, came across too early and collision was inevitable because of it.
My view is Vettel broke a bit earlier than I would expect him to which was a mistake which he foolishly tried to correct for by stopping breaking and then starting again.
Kubica made a mistake which was not being on a very smart line considering you have Vettel on your inside. He should have been able to take that corner, and Vettel with the tyre advantage without having to use that line. If it have been Piquet, Piquet might well have moved off the track to avoid him - but this is Vettel we're talking about.
Either one of those mistakes could have caused the accident, neither of them deserved the penalty. And when you put both of them together trying to say one was more at fault than the other is a huge what if. If Vettel hadn't have breaked early and you play Kubica's line forward a few more meters what would have happened? A crash that was Kubica's fault slightly more than Vettels.
So who was at fault? Both, neither, it doesn't matter it was a racing incident. And as Steven said... BMW were up in arms because they thought they could win and Vettel admitted it and that is why there was a penalty.
I have to come to work tomorrow... I hope I don't get protested at!
bmw never had a hope in hell :)
Off topic completely but I find these amazing
http://picasaweb.google.com/lkjohnson1950/JulianBreem?authkey=Gv1sRgCIPCr_bO7ILOvQE&feat=directlink#
Absolutely!
in the midst of sorting out some new hosting for the site. have a sneaky suspicion that sidepodcast may have out grown us. a couple of quick stats:
- the database is now over 100MB in size
- we have almost 17GB of media files
- this month over 2.5TB worth of data will have been downloaded
i'm pretty confident we're not going to find a decent webhost who'll support all of that, at a price we can afford. at the moment i'm struggling to find someone who'll do all of that at any cost.
i blame christine for talking too much.
Woweee!
(although I was told by my dba here that we need to reduce the size of our main database as it is now just over 30Gb)
Perhaps we should go all BBC and only have one week's worth of stuff at a time. :)
hehehe.
i'd imagine you have a slightly bigger budget than ours though :)
Not this year! ;)
But yes.
Silly season rumour number one
Bruno Senna to FIF1
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2009/03/31/senna-to-replace-fisichella-at-force-india/
:D
what about liuzzi?
gosh already?
I am sure he will feel really happy when he reads that.
Blimey, pedro de la rosa has been around in f1 for 10 years last weekend...
just seems wierd to me.
:)
how long has gpupdate been doing the annoying rotating image thing?
Quite a while, I think.
i'm paying attention!
I'll have to go with Steven Roy on this one. Kubica was a little too greedy there, Vettel's tires were toast. He could have stayed on the outside which would have put him on the inside on the following left. But we do tent to forget that by the end of the race because of the damned klag the track is really a one lane affair in the turns....
Racing incident.
Also, I see no evidence in the video of BArrichello being hit BEFORE he plowed into Webber, after, yeah maybe but not before.
Watch it closely and you'll see Rubens' car jolt before he hits Webber. That's the hit from Heikki.
:)
Seriously - that's quite a significant amount of traffic. Does the Doohickey have a significant impact on this?
LPG has just mentioned that createforum.com now offers an option for their forums that means you can control the creation of threads. If nothing else, you could archive old threads there - people wouldn't need to register to read them.
Year end today, so tomorrow brings a brand new budget :)
I thought Kubica going to the Brawn after-race party was the start of rumour number 1?
test
Don't know. I just scan the headlines so I don't spend any time on it.
nope. barely touches bandwidth or processor usage. lclt is still processor heavy because it uses the wordpress code, but that's a temporary problem.
the bandwidth is excessive this month because we put out a video, i think the month before was less.
hmm, trying hard to keep everything under one database. we have plans to do cool things with comment searching and splitting things up will make it harder.
only 25 fantasy racers teams required to make it to 500!
which would make you 180th out of 500 instead of 475?? I don't know if that will make much of a difference for you :P
hahaha :D
Where are they all coming from. It only seems like two weeks ago we were not sure that we would make 300
ooooh, a proper F1 advert on the BBC, with proper F1 footage :)
i have no idea. just did another identi.ca shout out, but that's only the 2nd one i've done all month?
Just changed my team, Kimi is gone.
me too. who'd you put in?
wow! Jenson is now 11.10m!
Vettel. I intended to have him from day one but didn't for some reason. I guess it made no difference either way in hindsight!
glad i bought him before
yeah me too :)
Me too, I got both the Brawn's. Could turn out to be bargain of the century.
:|
When i bought him he was about 6m i think... what about rubens?
Rubens now 9.30m :D
5 ish I think.
woot :D
both of them were bargins then. love it.
Hmmmm, Trulli or Glock....
i've got glock... just cause he was cheaper, and i think he will do well this year, but Trulli did well last race, so it depends how much money you have left ;)
i have both!!
im so happy with my choices :D
Glock and Sutil, or Vettel with a bit of spare change??
I've got 7.6m, Trulli is 7.3m and Glock is 7.0m. I've always had a soft spot for both but I can't decide who will be best this year.
I think Trulli will be
Vettel all the way.
Glock and Sutil get way more points by the looks of it, i think i'll leave it for a race and then see
Trulli it is. Cue a shock win for Glock in Malaysia.
I have made a few quid since yesterday then
Who'd you go for instead?
Just changed 2 of my teams to Button, Barrichello and Hamilton with Buemi thrown into one for added effect. Sutil got a place in the other, could do well. He came 9th on sunday remember?
I've made 8 million! Woot
If you rate them equally take the cheaper one
I'm down in 198th place with Zero Downforce. That's my current top team.
I reckon sutil might hab a few points this year, no reason why specifically. Just a feeling :D
Well to be fair, the car doesn't suck in the race. We know that. It's qualifying where it's not compotent enough.
Just found out I'm 99th with Type 1 Racing, my only team. Beating Mr C :)
Two above me then, also my only team.
that's not helping.
I've just gone mad and put button and barrichello in all 5 of my teams. Let's see you live with that! :D They accompany a variety of drivers across all of them which I consider to be on form as of the end of Australia.
http://www.ferrari.com/
kimi blog, massa blog. you name it, the new site has it!
Rob?
it has a staff blog (with rss feed and comments). he could guest post maybe?
i asked in the comments:
"Your comment has been submitted. Comments are moderated and so it may not appear immediately."
i check later.
How dare you? Rob is not just staff.
oops.
Shame the same can't be said about the Brawn site! A nice message from Ross though and an audio diary from Jenson. I hope they get some merch online soon, I really want a tee-shirt before Silverstone!
merchandise is due to be released around June i think ;)
I got an e-mail from Formula1.com which said the Brawn GP merchandise was coming soon.
Does it help if I say I am 355th
how did that happen?
Looks like the Ferarri site can't handle the traffic. See pit stop image in dropio
Is that 355th overall or just in the SPC league? Cos I'm 660th overall.
Just in time :D
Hamilton, Raikkonen, etc etc
Sorry.
355 in SPC
Plenty of time to bounce back then (and Mr C too)
hehe. no word of a lie, it took me 17 attempts to create a login, due to not being able to figure any of the capcha codes.
this is quality:

wow-wow-wee-wah-wah
Do we know who's hosting the panel this weekend?
Rain still looks likely for Malaysia at the weekend. Most of the teams are probably hoping for it so that they have a good chance against Brawn.
Don't forget, we still don't know how that car runs in the wet. If it goes well, then everyone else should be afraid. VERY afraid :D
The next panel is on 19th April i think... And i believe Ollie may be hosting it
I wonder if those huge front wings will collect water? :P could be interesting :D
KERS v2; Stored water in the front wing gives them a boost.
Oh, didn't think there was such a big break. Hopefully I won't be on a train that weekend.
I'm assuming the KERS system is water-tight. Didn't see any news stories of drivers at risk of running KERS in the wet and getting shocked.
KERS in the wet will have been thought of. Really, do you think they'd have KERS if they thought rain would pose a major threat that they'd use it? I know it sems obvious that it would be a problem, but I'm sure it'll be fine.
Interesting thought
I'm more interested in what might happen to Williams' flywheel in a big crash. It spins at about a million rpm.
If anyone's wondering non-UKers can now watch Murray's recap on the BBC website.
how come?
I'm guessing because theres a version on there now with no F1 clips, just murray talking about the race. The F1 is licensed to viewing in the UK only whereas their own stuff isn't.
ahhhh, clever :)
tis quiet here tonight..
Indeed, slow news day today.
am geeking out. yourself?
Editing.
trying to relax after straining my brain but not suceeding :(
ICT report :(
I am just listening to your Murray Walker. :)
the likelyhood is that your sitting next to each other....which amuses me greatly...your humble abode must be very quiet apart from the 'studio'
Talking is overrated.
Have been lurking for a while. Not much happening today...
haha that was rather awesome.
my deepest condolences ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sc-cow-jpg
just thought i'd mix it up...
......Riiiiiight
We've discussed this before. I think the Wikipedia article on flywheels mentions that most commercial installations are placed underground in case they break.
LPG and I use MSN but we are in different rooms at least.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/scaryfia-jpg
*scared*
my mind is so screwed up now...
I'm pretty sure it's right behind the drivers head as well.
Glad I'm not eating.
That's OK, they are wearing helmets. :)
They need a bunker round their heads the speed those things are going!
Perhaps the HANS is filled with sand?
I'm glad of it, I'm so far behind because I missed a lot of post-event news etc on Sunday night / yesterday. I've just done the rounds of the news sites, still need to catch up on comments here though! And I want to watch the race again.
Did anyone see Jake Humphrey's behind-the-scenes blog about his first F1 hosting gig? I think he enjoyed it :-)
There's a sandbagging pun to be made there but I'm not awake enough today.
!?!?!
:)
I just finished listening to the Williams Team podcast. Clair Williams said they are now accepting questions which would be awnsered during future podcasts.
It is nice to see some interactivity between the fans and the teams, but do I dare ask if she is single or not?
:D
Good for him :) I was most impressed with anyone in the team on the weekend with him was impressed most.
Glad to see he enjoyed it :D
Wow, not sure what that was all about..
Wow! :)
What I was trying to say was 'In anyone in the team on the weekend I was impressed most with him'.
Reading back on that hurts trying to work it out :(
In the style of Mark Blundell? :-)
:D
Nope - its 'Kit' or one of the successor vehicles... Knight Rider was the person/organisation behind the car....
You could fit a decent Kit style red light on the front of the Renault actually.
I am so bored. This week is gonna be sooo long until we get to friday.
Really? Tuesday is already almost done.
Flying by at a rate of knots.
Evening all - have a crack at this number puzzle.
If you guess which the 6th number is, you'll be able to open the excel file.
What is the 6th number?
1, 2, 6, 42, 1806, ___???
When you get it, put your name in the comments on the drop. It took me less than a minute. Feel free to DL it and pass it on to your mates.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/number-puzzle-xls
it's going so quickly for me... and i've got so much to do before friday!
Do you need another game? ;)
Yeah but there's no significant F1 news around and I'm just generally bored what with no job, no friends around, no girlfriend and technically no money.
Knight Industries was the company behind K.I.T.T. and K.A.R.R.
*hangs head with the shame of knowing that*
K.I.T.T actually atands for Knight Industries Two Thousand *if my scrambled memory serves me correctly*
Ah, I see. You need to get creative :)
Imagine if Brawn, Toyota and Williams get taken out the results because of their diffuser because of the appeal....
1st....Hammy
2nd....Alfonso
3rd....Buemi
4th....Bourdais
5th....Sutil
6th....Heidfeld
7th....Fisi
8th....Webber
9th....Vettel
How much of a different championship that would give us!!!
Technically no money?
I'm on jobseeker's allowance.
Ahh rightey
!!!
Thats about 32p a week isn't it?
:D
and KARR was Knight Automated Roving Robot
Yeah, I'm rolling on the floor laughing at that one...
So I'm not the only sad act who watched it then. :D
Evnin all.
If I could describe today in less than an essay, I'll be impressed with my self. Am shattered, and being courtside to a basketball is tiring business.
Required viewing. Along with The 'A' Team. To think we thought that was quality entertainment.
You've missed nothing.
I was on it a few short months ago. It sucks.
Of course, as my girlfriend earned money, I got the bare minimum of everything. That would have eended after 6 months too.
:(
I'm still contemplating going to City College in Norwich. At least it would give me something to do. I just feel so bored without a job and the only places to go being the gym and library. I sent them an e-mail with my interests and they suggested going down for an interview or advisory session or something like that so to speak.
Whatcha gonna learn?
I recently watched an episode of the A-Team
The ends - firing that many bullets and not actually hitting anything at all. They must have been elite soldiers. :D
Go for it! If it gets you off your bum and something to do then surely it can only be a good thing. Plus it'll give you experience, maybe meet new people and lead to something good so you might as well take a look! :D
There are things I want to do and things I like doing. I quite enjoy writing blog posts and reports and such so maybe something to do with journalism. If I can't get into the world of F1, I could just as well write about it :D
I also love music and have wanted to learn to play the guitar, and I do admit to singing when I'm on my own in the house :P
Easy
Norwich College isn't a bad place at all.
Spent a few happy days there. Many happier evening though. ;)
From what I learnt today, I enjoy journalism even more. Maybe might start out in basketball as well.
Of course. Although my mum's sceptical about my commitment to it if I was to get in there and do it. I've pulled out of 6th form already because I couldn't take the work both in quantity and difficulty.
I quit 6th form too, if that makes you feel any better.
Depends what kind of course you do, if text books aren't your thing then a vocational course would be a good thing to do
Here's a question that i've wondered but you are totally at liberty to not answer it....
What do you and me 'do' ??
Strangely enough, that does a little :)
Mostly Sidepodcast ;)
You know, I've wanted to ask that but not really dared to. :P
Same :P
I finished 6th form *barely...* and dropped out of Uni
You can always ask us anything. We may or may not answer.
I work with numbers (amazingly enough).
So Sidepodcast, eating and sleeping..
Thought as much :) Thanks
what i currently do. life is perfect.
So Mr C doesn't work because of his ears?
Scott, I encourage you to start guitar. I got mine in Argos 2 year ago for about £50, and got a case, pitch pipe, tuner and a few other things with it for that price. Oh and a case too which I have since lost.
It helps a lot if there's songs you actually want to learn, makes it a lot more fun. I'm sure there's songs/bands songs that you want to learn. :P
Kudos goes to F1 Rejects podcast for asking an F1 driver..."how did you do into motorsport?" ha, ha, ha, ha
Not my place to answer for him.
I dropped out of uni three times.
wasup with my ears?
Why am I suddenly thinking 'me' has a van?
Three different ones, or the same one three times?
Of course, there's a lot of great song and bands I want to play :P
Your tinnitus?
Hehehe. Like Delboy?
This time next year, Rodney, we'll be millionaires ;)
it doesn't stop me from working :)
So many images in my head :D
Ahh ok. I just assumed is all. Good to know anyhow :)
O rly? Go on. :P
Ya Rly :D :D
no worries. we both have full-time jobs, sidepodcast is just a hobby. a hobby that has officially outgrown us, but we couldn't do this without income.
that won't happen.... :(
I wish I had the focus to play guitar :( or any instrument... especially piano...
*sighs*
Thats not a van - thats a shopping cart!
One phrase to look for if you are going to 'do' journalism though...
NCTJ
You can still 'get in' without a recog. by them qual. but its a whole lot easier (as in, foot in the door job) if your course does have it.
Seriously - if the local course isn't then you'd be better off doing shorthand, typing etc. with an interesting Alevel or two... plus getting in some experience. At a push there are a couple of C&G courses that are 'good' contentwise, but how good/useful depends entirely on how good the tutors are (as in - are they or have they ever been journalists/writers themselves...)
These days the whole blogosphere thing is as good a 'way in' as anything though :-)
Hmm...
I thought I remembered him saying once, or do I just need more sleep?
ah yes, the piano, im very impatient....
i play the saxophone...mainly because you can learn 1 and play all 3 types because they all have the same fingering :D
Oh no! Maths!
By the way, which is the odd one out in this list?
Gordon Brown, Sir Terry Wogan, Alistair Darling, Sir Fred Goodwin, Mervyn King,
Thats exactly what the journalist I talked to said to me as well ;)
All of them?
it has to have something to do with numbers....im going to say Terry Wogan
Mervyn King, cos he's cool when doing maths.
With Indianapolis, Magny Cours, Silverstone written on the side?
Where's Luke?
Aha! No offense but I only thought it was Christine that worked and you stayed at home all day sleeping, drinking non-descriptive energy drink and posting on here. :P
Monaco, Abu Dhabi, Donnington...
i play the guitar... have done for years... i'm still rubbish :s
i did? i used to drive a van, so i may well of.
WHAT?!?!?
In what way? as Angus Deayton used to say.
Sorry!
The only one who's made money from the Recession?
Am i right with the person?
you didn't actually think that though did you?
You do know that if that was the case, he would have to spend all day cleaning and cooking and all that other domestic crap... :D
I can play the piano to be fair. Well, I say play, I mash random keys and think to myself 'that sounds right' :D
I want to learn properly but i just lose focus too quickly. it's inspiring watching betthoven, or rachaminov, or even matthew bellamy... :(
:D Scott has missed the point that this is a web site, You can post to it from anywhere.
As long as you enjoy it...
HA! Did you see the cupcake?
Thats my point. ;)
Yes, but not the reason. It does have to do with money though.
:D
Boo ya, 2 out of 3 is good enough for me
That didn't take as long as I first thought :)
Probably best if I hadn't said it at all :( Damn me saying the wrong things at the wrong time.
yeah i do... i just wish reading and relating music came more naturally to me, but it doesn't. Sadly that's one of the areas of my dyslexia i've not been able to overcome.
There is no such thing visible on the video! if you look at the overhead you can see Heikki is well behind Barrichello when he nerfs Webber. On the Rubens on board you see nothing that suggests a hit before he contacts Webber...
sheesh.
nah, it's ok. i like that i give off that impression.
Lol
Well, its one way of keeping the hand/eye in, and dealing with the desperate *need* to write drivel when no one wants to pay you for it ;-)
There are some fantastic, if horribly expensive, professional courses (with included placements, which frankly are sodding useful in and of themselves) out there. Mainly in London though.
Alternatively - go find a uni course that you can get on to, somewhere with a good (and known, journalistically) student paper/magazine/radio or tv station; wing the course and work on said publication for the hard work and experience (but make sure that you pass the degree/diploma) and leave after 2 or 3 years with a hefty portfolio and some good contacts (raiding the publications rolodex for all the past peeps who have worked on it and gone and got 'good jobs').
Just get training on the various 'packages' and technology out there whatever you do!!
he can use the washing machine though from what you've said... that's something.
That dosent matter....because as a dyslexic you can spell dyslexia!!! I don't know anyone that can spell it
christine, is there anything people don't know about us?
Well OK, the jolt is extremely minor but it is visible. You just have to concentrate and watch VERY carefully
so where does the broken diffuser come from? i don't understand why Rubens would say he was hit from behind at the start, which broke his diffuser, if it well... wasn't the case...
Ah, sidepodstalking.
Quite a lot it seems.
Rock and roll?
totally!
Christine, watch he's not going to try and throw the tv out the window. Rock and Roll styleé :D
Do you 'do' Tab? Its supposed to be 'dyslexia friendly' compared to stave :-)
(personally, I've struggled with tab all the time, much much prefer the stave... but then I'm weird like that lol, and not dyslexic)
She told us that: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/about-2/
*cough* i may have used the spell check for that one ;) lol i've overcome vast areas of my dyslexia over the years. So much so that when i was recently tested they couldn't believe how much i had improved in 2 years. i had to be re-tested to make sure :D
OK, Terry Wogan is the odd one out because he's the only one who has a banking qualification.
well either you or christine talked about it once... i can't remember why.. or when though,
haha i like that
Surely if its 'rock and roll' that means that me has a large farm somewhere and wears a flat cap (whilst other people actually *do* the farming, of course)
LPG ducks and runs...
yeah i do both... but not all pieces are easy in tab :)
When I learnt to play the guitar it was by listening and repeating - since then I've learnt to read tab. Proper notation still just looks like a drunk spider has crawled across a page to me.
Don't play any more though. Keep the guitars around as things of beauty *still strung and tuned through as otherwise they can warp*
You don't like peanut butter? What?
And Linkin Park? What?
I also hate buying shoes....with size 14 feet...it becomes....difficult to buy shoes at all, let alone ones i like...
What?
What?
How can you like Linkin Park?
Peanut butter is awful.
nothing wrong with not liking peanut butter.
Hateful stuff.
Although I am allergic to nuts though...
what's wrong with Linkin Park?
According to that link, I could be closer than I meant to be...
point '10' for reference...
Mind you - Andy would tell you (and tell you all again) that point '8' is prominent in my life....
Same here. Last time I ate some years ago, I literally exploded*
*it sent me to the hospital but I may not have exploded
Scott - do you have an email address or login on the Wiki?
You pick up on Linkin Park but not S Club 7??
I had some peanut butter on a spoon a couple of weeks back. For some reason, it made me laugh :P
I do now think that your all mad. Apart from those with nut allergies, which are of course excused.
I don't like peanut butter. I don't like peanut anything
That you see is called an observational error.
:D
I don't know about piano, but like has been said, you don't need the slightest clue on how to read music for guitar. If it wasn't for tabs, I wouldn't be able to play anything at all.
It helps if at least some of what you want to learn is easyish. If you want to learn piano and try starting with something liek Matt Bellamy-written pieces, you can easily get frustrated and give up. Piano seems a lot harder than guitar.
:D
:D
yeppy, it is quite gross, unless mixed with something, but on its own its gross
Nice story. :D
Linkin Park didn't have their own TV show.
Or their own Junior band
I'm only mildly allergic. Just makes me hurl.
I can get away with very small doses in amongst large amounts of food, but I try to avoid entirely.
Exploding doesn't sound good.
The peanut butter though, not the spoon :P
Who had their own TV show...
S Club GP2
bad times...
CBBC was for otis the aardvark, short change, and arthur. not s club ruddy 7.
I think S Club win
I shall run away now to avoid any complications in explaining my self over S Club 7. Who are awful before anyone asks
(And I am not siniging any of there songs)
Bye
ahhh short change, i remember that, very retro
It's almost as if the TV shows were the reason the bands existed...
There are videos on Facebook of me singing them. woop woop :D
they filmed one once at our local swimming pool. it still amazes me what they found in the pool.
*shudders*
Short change! Forgot about that show... :)
So many feed lines, so little time.
??
Oh god. My mam's just read the Alan Shearer to Newcastle story on the BBC, going to be a long night.
S Club 7 songs.
I am tres coool
Should we have a vote? 'Me'?
frop.io?
it would be a landslide.
I'm convinced it's an early april fool. SURELY.
Why cant he buy out Byker Grove?
:D
not a chance matey, not a chance
ahh, c'mon.
i just got a message on facebook saying someone has hit me with a pillow... i'm officially confused..
Ah, the days when I'd watch anything... :D
I hope, thats not going to stop my Newcastle friends going on and on and on about it.
:D
Speaking of April Fools, do you think we'll get any "interesting" F1 news tomorrow? ;)
I'm saying "Hamilton breaks McLaren contract to sign with Ferrari" :D
Not even for a cupcake?
i think its dissapeared....i hope anyway....
plus its not of the right format, some wierd mobile format
McLaren to copy Ferrari's potential diffuser design.
beekah grooov rocked!
Byker byler bykkeeer grooove, yeah!!
I'm not falling for that one :D
He's not going to be the manager again is he?
He hasn't been manager before but now Newcstle fans are going to think they'll survive. This is just false hope.
Branson renames Brawn team Beardy F1?
what about a whole cake?
Apparantly so, until the end of the season at least. My theory is its Ashelys plan at a last ditch attempt to win the fans over again.
And have suddenly realised its 38 minutes until Script Frenzy starts :(
I think I just witnessed the first driver announcement over Twitter.
IndyCar team Vision Racing just tweeted that they are doing a press release in an hour to announce a driver. Then they said who the driver was..
I know he hasn't been the manager but every six months he is going to be the manager.
Massa confirms he is hoping to grow a full beard by 2012
If it was made by 'me' and delivered by Jenson (not his PA, who i havent seen for aaaaaaages) then i'd consider it :D
And they called F1 stupid and comical :D
Anything's better than the current one!!
Oh god every single bloomin time, the back page
'SHEARER FAVOURITE FOR HOT SEAT'
Wouldn't work...
Brawn - Check
Branson - Check
Button - Check...ish
Barrichello - Nope.
I don't get why the Newcastle fans have such belief in Shearer when he has no record whatever as a coach or a manager.
He had a beard over the winter! it was furry.
It worked for ZZ Top - they all had beards - except for one.
We can wait. Does Nick still have a beard?
F1 cars pledge to cut out on green tyres.
Bernie enforces law to ban all white cars.
Oh and it has to be a victoria sponge, with icing :D
Quite the reverse, I thought it was great! Bit of a spoiler before the official confirmation was made available to the press, then the time delay before those guys wrote and uploaded something..
Hunter-Reay has basically been an open secret for a couple of days anyway, just thought it was a strange way of doing things.
Your not getting Nick.
Nooo, the evil Nick.
if sidepodcast had the power to get Jenson to deliver stuff for them i'd like to think they would have told me :P although I wouldn't mind if it were Jules... just cause it's sooo strange we haven't see her in a while ;)
Who was called 'Beard''
:D
You know, I ws thinking last week how his voice doesn't match how he looks. It just confuses me.
nope :D thank god.
Ah yes, but the likelyhod of a) 'me' making an (edible) victoria sponge with icing and b) it getting delivered by Button, is so infinitely small, it means said videos of me singing S Club will never get released :D
You have underestimated us!
ahh, you gotta hear this one, even for a second time :
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/03/31/sidepodpanel-i-lost-my-count/
hmmm, this worrys me
i never thought Mr C would make a cupcake live - hence me saying it so i didn't have to be on the podpanel...
A cardboard cut-out Jenson will do, right?
been looking forwrd to this
If it talks? maybe....
The Shearer to Newcastle thing is like Roy Keane to Manchester United. Everyone thinks it's a natural progression which is silly. Newcastle think they're better than they actually are anyway. I use to quite like them until 2 years ago or so. Probably when Shearer retired actually. They're like the Toyota of football.
twas tres amusant though
Righty ho, just finished listening to Episode 99, very good, as ever :)
When Christine was talking about Fantasy Racers all i could think about was "my joint first place heart bleeds", i can't remember who i said it to, or what it was about, but it made me laugh alot!
Night all!
see ya jon.
I need me a proper headset mic so you guys can hear me a bit clearer and better for these panels and stuff.
night
I bought one just in case I got talked into it. And I installed Skype and resurrected my old account. All the scrambling around for Gavin's hosting, and not making it, was embarrassing.
it'll probs be a bit better if your connect is now quicker?
you tell us this now?
I'm catching up on Digests: proof!
Indeed.
now that is impressive.
I bought it after the event and I wasn't here Sunday... :-(
WOW
Night Jon.
Sounds like you wanted to get the man on the show for a loooong time now :D
I got mine yesterday. :D
Bought a proper USB one too. No more faffing around setting up the bluetoof or farting about with changing the digital cables..
only in that the panels taking a break for two weeks.
excellent :)
I didn't know that at the time... I haven't quite worked out how the schedule is determined..
Might have a quick look while I'm in the city tomorrow morning for one. Either that or I'll stop in the little computer shop in Wymondham and look at one.
neither have we :)
in this instance we just need a rest.
yell if you do. and all three of you. feel free to leave voicemails if you fancy giving them a road test.
Frankly, after this weekend I don't blame you :-)
and you deffo deserve it :)
Roger that.
Sorry, it makes me feel like a pilot.
I'm going to add myself to the maybe bit of the wiki (again). I was annoyed at missing Gavin's panel ('cos obviously we go back a way), and a bit annoyed at missing Sunday's although not so much because I would have been incoherent with tiredness.
:D
:D
Will do :)
I'm listening to the podpanel atm :D it's awesome :) good job guys :)
"Version 3.2: Fixes problems introduced by the BBC"
:D
i am completely confused?
i have iplayer desktop on a mac, and it downloads things just like the pc version does. how is a mac user unfairly prevented?
oh dear:
http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/04/01/internet-reboot-today/
I used to use a place in Norwich called Anglian Internet - not sure if it's still there.
The web site was terrible, but the prices were pretty good.
that was very quick, we're only 7 minutes in!
I think it's more to do with download & save - possibly a DRM issue
But i didn't say that
It does? That's new if it keeps the files on the mac. iPlayer downloader does the same, but doesn't erase them after 30 days.
Does that not sound suspiciously like an April Fools?
That's not even remotely believable. Sigh.
i believe it might be.
The "internet reboot", that is.
Not a great start... :)
it's not legit? ahh, ok. i have the version from the bbc. it's fine and works just like the pc version. better in fact.
Oh dear oh dear...
Was someone trying to get the UK version of Murray's race review to drop.io?
It should be on there - you'll have to download it - 18.8mb flv file.
Ooo Murray has a Macbook Pro :)
But you can't save every show, even the legit way with the 30 day self destruct
Oh.
Murray has a Kubica pronounciation that I've not heard before. "Cue-bitcha".
Listening to the podpanel, I consider Jonathan Legard to sound a bit like James Allen but much much better :)
And the BBC don't have as much storage space as Flibster ;)
why would i want to keep them for more than 30 days? mostly i watch in a web browser. download is useful if disconnected, but if i can't watch something in 30days, it can't be that important?
I've just been watching 25 year old comedy. It can be important to keep things longer.
Leave iTunes open
and i bought the flumps on itunes (no idea how old that is), but i can still watch it, and legally.
Fair enough, but I have videotapes of stuff that I recorded legally when they were broadcast and can still watch. Why shouldn't it be any different via iPlayer?
should, not shouldn't. It's late.
i guess so. i'm lazy, circumvention not only requires effort, but continual effort to keep ahead of who you're circumventing. i just can't be arsed when apple and the bbc make it so damn easy.
This is better:
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/protect/income-tax-loophole
gonna head off the laptop now, so night everyone :)
see ya ;)
much!
Now that is some good advice
Right, must go to bed. Night all :)
G'night Andy
night.
Night Andy.

:D
:D :D
Anyone translated it yet?
http://f1network.net/main/s169/st142366.htm
:D
Me too, seems it was a popular decision
If Joe Saward did too, you could call the new show "6th Form Drop Outs" ;)
There's always Songsmith too
That's not a front wing on the Brawn, it's a Cow Catcher!
hehehehe!
I own an S Club 7 cd (I didn't buy it though)
Linkin Park, I would return to sender
Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I haven't seen it...
Murray answers questions left on his blog: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7975488.stm
The last one is brilliant. :D
i'm off to bed now, so speak to you all tomorrow. night x
night lou.
only just got around to watching it. that is a classic :)
Night Lou.
G'night Lou
Good night Lou
Has this been posted here?

Apparently, the Brawn GP name will stick for 2009, whatever happens. On the other hand, if Branson decides to get a 51% stake (which I think is unlikely), the name change will happen in 2010.
More probable is that they'll become title sponsor for 3 years up to 2011.
I don't see why Branson would spend all that money for three years sponsorship and walk away at the end of it with nothing when for similar money he could own the team and have a long term presence in F1.
Because buying a team is that much more expensive than a title sponsorship. His style has always been that of maximum exposure for minimum cost. He's never owned any sports team before, because that will mean significant cost. I think he'll just take the sponsorship, then leverage on it even after it's done. Kinda like what West and Rothmans did.
if i were him, i'd take full rights to the car, stick the virgin name as title sponsor, and sell the rest of the car to the highest bidders.
the brackley team have been traditionally hopeless at finding sponsors, but bet sir rich can rustle up a couple. if he finds enough he'll get his title sponsorship for free.
Brilliant idea. Like what Philip Morris did with Ferrari?
That may just happen, to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
Right now though he can buy the team for next to nothing and sell as much sponsorship as he likes. He then gets free sponsorship and when he decides to get out of the sport he has an asset that can be sold to recoup a lot of his investment.
exactly like that in fact. if rich can't find backers, he can plug his own brands, and if he can, that's more for his pocket. he can't lose.
i think he could've bought the team for next to nothing, if he'd had the balls to back in january.
the price must've gone up a little, have you seen fantasy racers today?
;)
There is not a queue of people prepared to put money into F1.
Talking of which, swapped out Fernando for Timo
[Don't tell RG ;) ]
but, there are people currently sponsoring other teams, who could be tempted. especially if they're paying more to be beaten by the brawn.
LD
that didn't work at all.
:D
:D
See what happens when you use caps
nasty, evil, things.
Companies are tryng to get out of existing deals or putting out statements that they won't renew in two years time.
Have arranged my day off to coincide with the science museum meet-up (had an expiring Lieu day to use) so don't go changing the date now.
You may need to remind me to bring along the speed tape
two or three yup. but f1 still represents good value, and if branson is offering better rates, that's better value.
promise.
shall do.
In a flash of inspiration, what about:
"Hey Joe"
Simple, yet very appropriate
we gotta keep track of all these. that one i do like.
Like here:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Name+The+Joe+Saward+Chats+Show
that would be perfect!!
good morning
Good morning, Wolf. :)
Where are you going with that podcast in your hand.
In case anyone's been keeping an eye on those Conficker stories, it's been a lot of nothing so far.
Leave my computer running for a week or two? Are you insane???
... and maybe Giggles could sing the theme tune for us
"Hey Joe, where you going with that pen in your hand?"
no word of a lie, it took me 17 attempts to create a login, due to not being able to figure any of the capcha codes. {Comment #317}
I can believe that. There are some sites I cannot use (the biggest being the registered features of the Google empire) because I can't read the CAPTCHA boxes.
It will read the code out for you if you press the wheelchair button next to the captcha...
not on ferrari's site though.
No that's right... Google do it and very few other do it. So I was surprised to see Alianora saying it hadn't worked for her.
Because Branson, like Felix Dennis :-) knows that there are things you 'own' and things that its fiscally sensible simply to hire for a period of time....
If I hear just one more person say "The KERS", then I think I might just have to bring out The Hulk!
I've no idea how that ended up on the Mar 31st thread when I was replying in the Apr 2nd one
No that’s right… Google do it and very few other do it. So I was surprised to see Alianora saying it hadn’t worked for her. {Comment #697}
Due to the way my ears process sound, the audio CAPTCHA method is worse for me than the visual one. I can't even pick out any letters with that approach because it sounds like:
1) about four different conversations going on at once, at the same volume, with the same voice saying them
2) a stuttering overlaid on top
3) a professor-type voice stating random numbers every 3 seconds on top of that
4) the whole thing distorted by an underwater effect to the point where I struggle to make out anything at all and only picked up on the distinct layers the third time I heard it, never mind what the content of those layers was.
This is why I need a visual CAPTCHA I can read, or better still a non-CAPTCHA method of getting in.
In case you're wondering, I do sometimes have problems processing conversation in the outside world as well and I have to be very careful about what settings I use to listen to anything with speech (this includes any song with lyrics). It's the sort of thing I eventually get used to doing automatically, but when sites put in "accessibility" features that make their sites less accessible, it doesn't help.
