The end of another month already? Time is just flying, especially now the season has started. Monday is out the way, and the countdown clocks are already showing under three days until Free Practice 1 in Malaysia gets going. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • Organisers of the Australian GP seem to approve of the late-March slot, even though they had under 300,000 visitors across the weekend - their lowest ever Melbourne attendance. Does that mean the season will be starting this late in the future, or will another track take over the first calendar slot?
  • On the subject of circuits, Abu Dhabi have had to come out and defend their building schedule, but have also said that the tickets went on sale yesterday. I haven't heard any complaints like there were when Singapore's tickets were released into the wild, so perhaps they're already one up on their rivals?
  • Finally, Autosport have brought the excellent Paddock Life back, this time the Melbourne edition. My two favourite snippets? Buemi being bemused, and Stefano snapping photos.

That'll do it for now. There's plenty more to talk about with some comments taking an early look at the weather in Malaysia. Not that we're excited or anything! I'll see you in the comments.

I should have put my comment here...

So Mark Hughes seems pretty convinced that Brawn will not be caught all season! That’s quite a claim… But I think he might well be right.

He says that even if they get the diffuser removed then it won’t remove all of the advantage as there is no way the diffuser can be causing anywhere near all of the advantage they have now.

And finally that the Brawn has a 0.7 second a lap advantage all other things being equal.

You may well have seen this already though.

Noooo!!! We can't wait that long again! Surely the late start was due to the new regs?

The season has to start in Melbourne - it's the best track to start at and it's an awesome race as it's always action packed :-)

The late start was so that Bernie could make the races as late in the morning as possible in Europe. I think it worked, so expect to see it again next year.

So long as they get funding from Virgin, I think he's right. Besides, if the Brawns have a huge lead by mid-season ala 2002/2004, most teams will switch off 2009 and focus on 2010 instead, which also have huge rule changes.

Nahhh mate I meant the late calendar start, the time was fine except I had trouble seeing the cars at the end...

But the late calendar start was because they were waiting for the DST move, right?

DST was my second biggest grumble of the weekend (after the repeated apperances of that Cog Richard Branson)...

VIDEO: Honda's strategy of winning through failure - autoblog.com

I won't be able to see this video until much later but it sounds interesting. Are they continuing to milk their supposed success in F1 even though it was a spectacular failure?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)31/03/2009 at 09:32

An interesting POV of Melbourne - Autoblog.com

I believe this blog is US-based, which makes this post interesting, especially the comments. Judging by the perception and reaction to F1, USGPE are gonna have a hard time winning over the fans...

Just saw it now - and not a single mention of F1 in sight.

But had they truly stuck to this philosophy, they'd at least be enjoying a good year in F1 this year. But they didn't - they let their failures get to them. And not only have they failed their stint in F1, they have even failed in making the right decision whether or not to pull out.

  • Journeyer31/03/2009 at 09:54

They're gonna need to do a Brawn, basically, if they want to have some appeal. Otherwise, they won't be interested.

  • Journeyer31/03/2009 at 09:55

They’re gonna need to do a Brawn, basically, if they want to have some appeal. Otherwise, they won’t be interested.

You may have all this fan-friendly stuff, but if you're not winning, you're not gonna get that much support anyway.

  • Journeyer31/03/2009 at 10:06

I haven’t heard any complaints like there were when Singapore’s tickets were released into the wild, so perhaps they’re already one up on their rivals?

Singapore really messed up last year. To make up for it this year:

    1. They got a 2nd company to help out in ticketing (other than the original vendor).

    2. They set up a plan for selling tickets (Bay Grandstand & Walkabout goes on sale later - they're selling the more expensive stands first).

    3. They're testing the system! They've made the system available to random 2008 ticketbuyers so that they can load-test the system. Those lucky enough to be selected (like me) can buy their tickets now - 1 week before tickets go on sale this Monday. It's a win-win solution. :D

All in all, they've done a darn good job in the last one and a half years. Long may it continue.

If Button or Barrichello win the championship I think me, Lou, Dom or other Brawn GP fans and longtime Honda fans may just explode in excitement.

I've said it before, I really don't want to get ahead of myself in predicting that though. The win in Australia and 1-2 were absolutely mindblowing enough and thinking now that they could win the entire thing gives me feelings that I can't even describe. But it's far too early to tell personally...

I'd take rubens over Jenson to win.... as it would probably be ruben's most incredible swansong out of the sport... but Jenson winning it would be equally as incredible. :)

I updated my Facebook status with the link. A guy who I haven't seen for 5 years listened to it. My parents listened to it. Other people commented about it...

I prefer to be here, because with a blog I feel like I am talking to myself. I love contributing here and I love making you all laugh and hearing your opinions on mine when I do that - and I just didn't get that from a blog...

Indeed. Once those diffusers are deemed legal after Malaysia, though, they may just annihilate them from China onwards. Driving to a 30-second gap, just enough to get a free stop, is already annihilation, if you think about it. ;)

Stat of the day: What happens to the team that takes a 1-2 at the 1st round of the Championship?

2004 - Ferrari (WDC to race winner Schumacher; WCC)

2000 - Ferrari (WDC to race winner Schumacher; WCC)

1998 - McLaren (WDC to race winner Hakkinen; WCC)

1996 - Williams (WDC to race winner Damon Hill; WCC)

1992 - Williams (WDC to race winner Mansell; WCC)

1981 - Williams (WDC runner-up to 2nd placer Reutemann; WCC)

1968 - Lotus (WDC to 2nd placer Graham Hill after race winner Clark died; WCC)

1964 - BRM (WDC runner-up to race winner Graham Hill; WCC runner-up, but would've won if no points are dropped)

1963 - BRM (WDC runner-up to race winner Graham Hill; WCC runner-up)

1957 - Maserati (WDC to race winner Fangio; WCC had it already existed)

1954 - Mercedes* (team didn't debut until Round 4, but won on debut; WDC to race winner Fangio; WCC had it already existed)

1953 - Ferrari (WDC to race winner Ascari; WCC had it already existed)

1952 - Ferrari (WDC won by Ascari, who skipped round 1 for the Indy 500; WCC had it already existed)

1950 - Alfa Romeo (WDC to race winner Farina; WCC had it already existed)

In a nutshell, every time a team had a 1-2 at the start of its season, it had gone on to win the WDC 11 out of 14 times and the WCC 12 out of 14 times (counting the years the WCC didn't exist yet). In addition, in those times the team missed on the WDC or WCC, it always ended up getting at least 2nd place overall.

    That's a darn good strike rate. :)

    Never understood why the BBC put an expiry on downloads {Comment #99}

In no particular order, the reasons are likely to be:

    1) The BBC makes money from putting several of its biggest shows (such as Doctor Who) on DVD

    2) The programme-makers and sellers (including Bernie) get worried if there are no restrictions

    3) The government gets worried about the BBC giving too much value away to taxpayers if there are no restrictions because they think the BBC will ask for too much money in order to give taxpayers that value

    4) The government worries that people will replace watching DVDs and similar activities with watching iPlayer, which would give it a lot of hassle from the private commercial sector (especially the other TV channels)

    4) It encourages people to come back if/when the show is repeated

    5) The service was intended to help people with busy schedules rather than replace people's desire for new content

    6) Inertia - BBC had the first service of this type and doesn't like changing stuff if it thinks it works.

In no particular order, the reasons are likely to be:

All restrictions on the iPlayer are either because of licences or because of bandwidth - the BBC do not want ISP's to charge them for it as they have proposed!

Initially, iPlayer only worked on Windows. It's only been recently that Mac users have been able to use the site (and even now Linux users don't get to use iPlayer). I can't comment on how much functionality a Mac user gets at this moment in time, but it doesn't surprise me that people have found a way round the restrictions.

Psychological warfare. Make teams think that they could have been defeated by an even more embarassing margin than they already have been and you make it that much easier to defeat them in the future because the edge will go off their work, or better still they'll switch their efforts to 2010. In theory, at least.

    Afternoon everyone.

There has been a huge argument in the office today from what I gather. And I'm proud to say that it's all my fault. :D

It's all kicked off because I've renamed all the server for ease of identification. Each of the servers desktop backgrounds has a differnt F1 car on it to make them easier to identify when I'm VNC'd into several.

The argument is: What is the best F1 paintjob of all time? Unusual argument for a load of football fans don't you think?

I stuck my tuppence worth in via email and VOIP.

    1) Gold Leaf Team Lotus - started the principal sponsors off in F1 - also happened to look astonishly pretty.

    2) John Player Special Team Lotus - *droool*

    3) An unusual one for me here - it only appeared a couple of times during testing. The paintjob that Alonso used at the end of 2006 when he was still under contract to Renault and he had a go in the McLaren. No sponsors, just chrome red and black. Just awsome. Linky to a picture

I'll reveal later on what some of the choices were in the office - some real shockers in there, proving that my workmates have no taste. :D

    Never understood why the BBC put an expiry on downloads {Comment #99}

In no particular order, the reasons are likely to be:

Actually the main reason is competition restriction.

Why, for example even podcasts which the BBC owns all the copywrite for aren't allowed to have more than 10% original content (that wasn't on the radio) and if you go and subscribe to a podcast you can't go back beyond this week.

These are just some of the things that the BBC has been forced to do to stop them from "abusing their dominant position in the marketplace". Basically other organisations fear that if the BBC can just give things away for free in an area that was thriving without them then they can dominate the space.

I don't even want to think about F1 games right now. I was just doing the Spanish Grand Prix on rFactor and my strategy had put me in the perfect place to nick a podium place when I hit the kerb too much on the last chicane which, combined with the Toyota hitting me from behind, rolled me over a couple of times into the gravel.

That's 1 win and three retirements now. Not happy.

did you watch the footage on axis? sorry, but i’ve had the discussion three times since it happened and every time i’ve been having the argument with people who’ve not watched it from all the angles available.

Must have missed the axis video

  • me31/03/2009 at 16:52

Must have missed the axis video

    http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/03/unfair-advantage.html

to summarise. my take: vettel brakes unusually early, and then comes back at kubica. the overhead shows kubica left a car's width but vettel couldn't slow down a second time to make the gap.

the cynic in me suggests vettel intended to give kubs a slight tap, but the new '09 cars are front heavy and instead of knocking him sideways an unloaded rear tips the bmw into spin.

my guess is the stewards would've concluded something similar and vettel saved them a whole heap of trouble. he knew he buggered it up and came clean.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2009 at 16:55

Just watched the axis video and it changes nothing. Kubica approached the corner on the outside of Vettel and had his nose just in front at the corner entry. Since he was not remotely close to having completed the pass the corner is Vettel's. Kubica seemed to expect Vettel to slow down mid corner and just give him the position. If a driver goes into a corner on such a tight entry it is obvious that he is going to run wide on the exit but Kubica seemed to think that Vettel could enter on the right hand side and still leave a car width on his left on the exit. That was never going to happen.

If anyone was to blame it was Kubica but he was racing for position and that is wha we want so it is a racing incident.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2009 at 16:57

I have heard a few people say that Vettel braked early but at no point was Kubica close to being even half past Vettel. If you are on the outside of a corner and close to level you have lost the corner. Turning in and expecting the guy on the inside to evaporate is never going to work.

  • me31/03/2009 at 16:57

Just watched the axis video and it changes nothing.

vettel braked early and shot out of kubs view, before he committed to entry. why would he think the guy was still there?

  • me31/03/2009 at 16:58

If anyone was to blame it was Kubica but he was racing for position and that is wha we want so it is a racing incident.

sorry, i disagree. vettel was wrong and what he did was right. 10 places is harsh but he gave up the corner and the had a second stab. couthard-esque.

  • Journeyer31/03/2009 at 17:04

vettel braked early and shot out of kubs view, before he committed to entry. why would he think the guy was still there?

i guess that's what his mirrors were for?

  • Steven Roy31/03/2009 at 17:05

vettel braked early and shot out of kubs view, before he committed to entry. why would he think the guy was still there?

A driver can't just turn in and say he had seen the other guy brake early so assumed he would not be there. At no point was Kubica more than a foot ahead so he could see Vettel's front wheel and wing all the time.

Kubica was overtaking so it is his job to make sure the pass is complete. It is not the job of the driver being overtaken to avoid him. Kubica tried to overtake before the entry of the corner and didn't make the move stick but he turned in as if he had.

  • me31/03/2009 at 17:06

i guess that’s what his mirrors were for?

he wasn't that far back. anyhow, i've had the same discussion four times in three days. i can offer no more.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 17:20

sorry, i disagree. watching the footage of collision, rather than watching the footage of eddie jordan talking about the collision, i say vettel was in the wrong.

Still say Kubica. I mean, the guy went round the outside of Seb and practically left him no room on the exit. Where else was he supposed to go? Vettel's tyres were probably going off but he decided to commit to the corner because he naturally wanted to defend his place. Now with his tyres not 100% especially with them being the super softs, he was prone to understeer. Because of this, with Kubica on the outside he would have had nowhere to go and he didn't. Kub turned across thinking he was ahead but he was wrong. Carrying on from what Steven said, Kubica was too impatient to get the move finished, came across too early and collision was inevitable because of it.

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2009 at 17:35

My view is Vettel broke a bit earlier than I would expect him to which was a mistake which he foolishly tried to correct for by stopping breaking and then starting again.

Kubica made a mistake which was not being on a very smart line considering you have Vettel on your inside. He should have been able to take that corner, and Vettel with the tyre advantage without having to use that line. If it have been Piquet, Piquet might well have moved off the track to avoid him - but this is Vettel we're talking about.

Either one of those mistakes could have caused the accident, neither of them deserved the penalty. And when you put both of them together trying to say one was more at fault than the other is a huge what if. If Vettel hadn't have breaked early and you play Kubica's line forward a few more meters what would have happened? A crash that was Kubica's fault slightly more than Vettels.

So who was at fault? Both, neither, it doesn't matter it was a racing incident. And as Steven said... BMW were up in arms because they thought they could win and Vettel admitted it and that is why there was a penalty.

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2009 at 17:37

I have to come to work tomorrow... I hope I don't get protested at!

in the midst of sorting out some new hosting for the site. have a sneaky suspicion that sidepodcast may have out grown us. a couple of quick stats:

    - the database is now over 100MB in size

    - we have almost 17GB of media files

    - this month over 2.5TB worth of data will have been downloaded

i'm pretty confident we're not going to find a decent webhost who'll support all of that, at a price we can afford. at the moment i'm struggling to find someone who'll do all of that at any cost.

I'll have to go with Steven Roy on this one. Kubica was a little too greedy there, Vettel's tires were toast. He could have stayed on the outside which would have put him on the inside on the following left. But we do tent to forget that by the end of the race because of the damned klag the track is really a one lane affair in the turns....

    Racing incident.

Also, I see no evidence in the video of BArrichello being hit BEFORE he plowed into Webber, after, yeah maybe but not before.

nope. barely touches bandwidth or processor usage. lclt is still processor heavy because it uses the wordpress code, but that's a temporary problem.

the bandwidth is excessive this month because we put out a video, i think the month before was less.

LPG has just mentioned that createforum.com now offers an option for their forums that means you can control the creation of threads. If nothing else, you could archive old threads there - people wouldn’t need to register to read them.

Vettel. I intended to have him from day one but didn't for some reason. I guess it made no difference either way in hindsight!

  • Jon Waldock31/03/2009 at 18:38

    wow! Jenson is now 11.10m!

  • lou(♥ brawngp)31/03/2009 at 18:43

    Hmmmm, Trulli or Glock….

i've got glock... just cause he was cheaper, and i think he will do well this year, but Trulli did well last race, so it depends how much money you have left ;)

  • Jon Waldock31/03/2009 at 18:43

    Hmmmm, Trulli or Glock….

    i have both!!

Glock and Sutil, or Vettel with a bit of spare change??

I've got 7.6m, Trulli is 7.3m and Glock is 7.0m. I've always had a soft spot for both but I can't decide who will be best this year.

  • chris evans31/03/2009 at 18:49

Trulli it is. Cue a shock win for Glock in Malaysia.

    me too.

    Who'd you go for instead?

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 18:50

Just changed 2 of my teams to Button, Barrichello and Hamilton with Buemi thrown into one for added effect. Sutil got a place in the other, could do well. He came 9th on sunday remember?

  • Jon Waldock31/03/2009 at 18:51

Well to be fair, the car doesn't suck in the race. We know that. It's qualifying where it's not compotent enough.

KERS v2; Stored water in the front wing gives them a boost.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 19:57

KERS v2; Stored water in the front wing gives them a boost.

I'm assuming the KERS system is water-tight. Didn't see any news stories of drivers at risk of running KERS in the wet and getting shocked.

  • Joe31/03/2009 at 20:01

KERS in the wet will have been thought of. Really, do you think they'd have KERS if they thought rain would pose a major threat that they'd use it? I know it sems obvious that it would be a problem, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

If I could describe today in less than an essay, I’ll be impressed with my self. Am shattered, and being courtside to a basketball is tiring business.

    You've missed nothing.

  • Flibster31/03/2009 at 21:36

    Thats about 32p a week isn’t it?

Yeah, I’m rolling on the floor laughing at that one…

I was on it a few short months ago. It sucks.

Of course, as my girlfriend earned money, I got the bare minimum of everything. That would have eended after 6 months too.

    :(

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 21:37

I'm still contemplating going to City College in Norwich. At least it would give me something to do. I just feel so bored without a job and the only places to go being the gym and library. I sent them an e-mail with my interests and they suggested going down for an interview or advisory session or something like that so to speak.

  • Christine31/03/2009 at 21:38

Required viewing. Along with The ‘A’ Team. To think we thought that was quality entertainment.

I recently watched an episode of the A-Team

The ends - firing that many bullets and not actually hitting anything at all. They must have been elite soldiers. :D

Go for it! If it gets you off your bum and something to do then surely it can only be a good thing. Plus it'll give you experience, maybe meet new people and lead to something good so you might as well take a look! :D

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 21:39

There are things I want to do and things I like doing. I quite enjoy writing blog posts and reports and such so maybe something to do with journalism. If I can't get into the world of F1, I could just as well write about it :D

I also love music and have wanted to learn to play the guitar, and I do admit to singing when I'm on my own in the house :P

  • Steven Roy31/03/2009 at 21:40

    1, 2, 6, 42, 1806, ___???

    Easy

  • Flibster31/03/2009 at 21:41

Norwich College isn't a bad place at all.

Spent a few happy days there. Many happier evening though. ;)

Of course. Although my mum's sceptical about my commitment to it if I was to get in there and do it. I've pulled out of 6th form already because I couldn't take the work both in quantity and difficulty.

Depends what kind of course you do, if text books aren't your thing then a vocational course would be a good thing to do

Here's a question that i've wondered but you are totally at liberty to not answer it....

What do you and me 'do' ??

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 21:43

Strangely enough, that does a little :)

So Mr C doesn't work because of his ears?

  • Joe31/03/2009 at 21:46

Scott, I encourage you to start guitar. I got mine in Argos 2 year ago for about £50, and got a case, pitch pipe, tuner and a few other things with it for that price. Oh and a case too which I have since lost.

It helps a lot if there's songs you actually want to learn, makes it a lot more fun. I'm sure there's songs/bands songs that you want to learn. :P

  • Jon Waldock31/03/2009 at 21:46

Kudos goes to F1 Rejects podcast for asking an F1 driver..."how did you do into motorsport?" ha, ha, ha, ha

Thats not a van - thats a shopping cart!

  • littlepurplegoth31/03/2009 at 21:51

One phrase to look for if you are going to 'do' journalism though...

    NCTJ

You can still 'get in' without a recog. by them qual. but its a whole lot easier (as in, foot in the door job) if your course does have it.

Seriously - if the local course isn't then you'd be better off doing shorthand, typing etc. with an interesting Alevel or two... plus getting in some experience. At a push there are a couple of C&G courses that are 'good' contentwise, but how good/useful depends entirely on how good the tutors are (as in - are they or have they ever been journalists/writers themselves...)

These days the whole blogosphere thing is as good a 'way in' as anything though :-)

  • Dom31/03/2009 at 21:51

    Hehehe. Like Delboy?

    Hmm...

I thought I remembered him saying once, or do I just need more sleep?

I wish I had the focus to play guitar :( or any instrument… especially piano…

ah yes, the piano, im very impatient....

i play the saxophone...mainly because you can learn 1 and play all 3 types because they all have the same fingering :D

Evening all - have a crack at this number puzzle.

If you guess which the 6th number is, you’ll be able to open the excel file.

    What is the 6th number?

    1, 2, 6, 42, 1806, ___???

When you get it, put your name in the comments on the drop. It took me less than a minute. Feel free to DL it and pass it on to your mates.

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/number-puzzle-xls

That didn't take as long as I first thought :)

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 21:59

you didn’t actually think that though did you?

Probably best if I hadn't said it at all :( Damn me saying the wrong things at the wrong time.

  • lou(♥ brawngp)31/03/2009 at 21:59

As long as you enjoy it…

yeah i do... i just wish reading and relating music came more naturally to me, but it doesn't. Sadly that's one of the areas of my dyslexia i've not been able to overcome.

  • AC31/03/2009 at 21:59

Watch it closely and you’ll see Rubens’ car jolt before he hits Webber. That’s the hit from Heikki.

There is no such thing visible on the video! if you look at the overhead you can see Heikki is well behind Barrichello when he nerfs Webber. On the Rubens on board you see nothing that suggests a hit before he contacts Webber...

    sheesh.

  • me31/03/2009 at 22:00

  • littlepurplegoth31/03/2009 at 22:00

Thats exactly what the journalist I talked to said to me as well

    Lol

Well, its one way of keeping the hand/eye in, and dealing with the desperate *need* to write drivel when no one wants to pay you for it ;-)

There are some fantastic, if horribly expensive, professional courses (with included placements, which frankly are sodding useful in and of themselves) out there. Mainly in London though.

Alternatively - go find a uni course that you can get on to, somewhere with a good (and known, journalistically) student paper/magazine/radio or tv station; wing the course and work on said publication for the hard work and experience (but make sure that you pass the degree/diploma) and leave after 2 or 3 years with a hefty portfolio and some good contacts (raiding the publications rolodex for all the past peeps who have worked on it and gone and got 'good jobs').

Just get training on the various 'packages' and technology out there whatever you do!!

  • lou(♥ brawngp)31/03/2009 at 22:00

When I learnt to play the guitar it was by listening and repeating - since then I've learnt to read tab. Proper notation still just looks like a drunk spider has crawled across a page to me.

Don't play any more though. Keep the guitars around as things of beauty *still strung and tuned through as otherwise they can warp*

  • littlepurplegoth31/03/2009 at 22:11

According to that link, I could be closer than I meant to be...

    point '10' for reference...

Mind you - Andy would tell you (and tell you all again) that point '8' is prominent in my life....

  • Lukeh31/03/2009 at 22:11

Although I am allergic to nuts though…

Same here. Last time I ate some years ago, I literally exploded*

*it sent me to the hospital but I may not have exploded

  • Andy Taylor31/03/2009 at 22:12

Scott - do you have an email address or login on the Wiki?

  • Christine31/03/2009 at 22:12

How can you like Linkin Park?

You pick up on Linkin Park but not S Club 7??

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 22:12

You don’t like peanut butter? What?

I had some peanut butter on a spoon a couple of weeks back. For some reason, it made me laugh :P

  • RG31/03/2009 at 22:12

    Peanut butter is awful.

I do now think that your all mad. Apart from those with nut allergies, which are of course excused.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2009 at 22:12

You don’t like peanut butter? What?

I don't like peanut butter. I don't like peanut anything

  • RG31/03/2009 at 22:13

You pick up on Linkin Park but not S Club 7??

That you see is called an observational error.

You pick up on Linkin Park but not S Club 7??

    :D

  • Joe31/03/2009 at 22:13

I don't know about piano, but like has been said, you don't need the slightest clue on how to read music for guitar. If it wasn't for tabs, I wouldn't be able to play anything at all.

It helps if at least some of what you want to learn is easyish. If you want to learn piano and try starting with something liek Matt Bellamy-written pieces, you can easily get frustrated and give up. Piano seems a lot harder than guitar.

    Nice story. :D

Linkin Park didn't have their own TV show.

  • Jon Waldock31/03/2009 at 22:15

Linkin Park didn’t have their own TV show.

    Or their own Junior band

  • Flibster31/03/2009 at 22:15

Same here. Last time I ate some years ago, I literally exploded*

I'm only mildly allergic. Just makes me hurl.

I can get away with very small doses in amongst large amounts of food, but I try to avoid entirely.

    Exploding doesn't sound good.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 22:15

    Nice story.

Apparantly so, until the end of the season at least. My theory is its Ashelys plan at a last ditch attempt to win the fans over again.

Quite the reverse, I thought it was great! Bit of a spoiler before the official confirmation was made available to the press, then the time delay before those guys wrote and uploaded something..

Hunter-Reay has basically been an open secret for a couple of days anyway, just thought it was a strange way of doing things.

The Shearer to Newcastle thing is like Roy Keane to Manchester United. Everyone thinks it's a natural progression which is silly. Newcastle think they're better than they actually are anyway. I use to quite like them until 2 years ago or so. Probably when Shearer retired actually. They're like the Toyota of football.

“Version 3.2: Fixes problems introduced by the BBC”

    i am completely confused?

I used to use a place in Norwich called Anglian Internet - not sure if it's still there.

  • Bassano Clapper31/03/2009 at 23:07

i have iplayer desktop on a mac, and it downloads things just like the pc version does. how is a mac user unfairly prevented?

I think it's more to do with download & save - possibly a DRM issue

    But i didn't say that

  • Andy Taylor31/03/2009 at 23:07

i have iplayer desktop on a mac, and it downloads things just like the pc version does. how is a mac user unfairly prevented?

It does? That's new if it keeps the files on the mac. iPlayer downloader does the same, but doesn't erase them after 30 days.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/03/2009 at 23:07

    But i didn’t say that

it's not legit? ahh, ok. i have the version from the bbc. it's fine and works just like the pc version. better in fact.

It should be on there - you'll have to download it - 18.8mb flv file.

why would i want to keep them for more than 30 days? mostly i watch in a web browser. download is useful if disconnected, but if i can't watch something in 30days, it can't be that important?

i guess so. i'm lazy, circumvention not only requires effort, but continual effort to keep ahead of who you're circumventing. i just can't be arsed when apple and the bbc make it so damn easy.

Apparently, the Brawn GP name will stick for 2009, whatever happens. On the other hand, if Branson decides to get a 51% stake (which I think is unlikely), the name change will happen in 2010.

More probable is that they'll become title sponsor for 3 years up to 2011.

  • Steven Roy01/04/2009 at 00:59

I don't see why Branson would spend all that money for three years sponsorship and walk away at the end of it with nothing when for similar money he could own the team and have a long term presence in F1.

  • Journeyer01/04/2009 at 01:02

I don’t see why Branson would spend all that money for three years sponsorship and walk away at the end of it with nothing when for similar money he could own the team and have a long term presence in F1.

Because buying a team is that much more expensive than a title sponsorship. His style has always been that of maximum exposure for minimum cost. He's never owned any sports team before, because that will mean significant cost. I think he'll just take the sponsorship, then leverage on it even after it's done. Kinda like what West and Rothmans did.

  • me01/04/2009 at 01:08

if i were him, i'd take full rights to the car, stick the virgin name as title sponsor, and sell the rest of the car to the highest bidders.

the brackley team have been traditionally hopeless at finding sponsors, but bet sir rich can rustle up a couple. if he finds enough he'll get his title sponsorship for free.

  • Journeyer01/04/2009 at 01:10

That may just happen, to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

  • Steven Roy01/04/2009 at 01:12

Right now though he can buy the team for next to nothing and sell as much sponsorship as he likes. He then gets free sponsorship and when he decides to get out of the sport he has an asset that can be sold to recoup a lot of his investment.

  • me01/04/2009 at 01:12

Brilliant idea. Like what Philip Morris did with Ferrari?

exactly like that in fact. if rich can't find backers, he can plug his own brands, and if he can, that's more for his pocket. he can't lose.

i think he could've bought the team for next to nothing, if he'd had the balls to back in january.

the price must've gone up a little, have you seen fantasy racers today?

Due to the way my ears process sound, the audio CAPTCHA method is worse for me than the visual one. I can't even pick out any letters with that approach because it sounds like:

    1) about four different conversations going on at once, at the same volume, with the same voice saying them

    2) a stuttering overlaid on top

    3) a professor-type voice stating random numbers every 3 seconds on top of that

    4) the whole thing distorted by an underwater effect to the point where I struggle to make out anything at all and only picked up on the distinct layers the third time I heard it, never mind what the content of those layers was.

This is why I need a visual CAPTCHA I can read, or better still a non-CAPTCHA method of getting in.

In case you're wondering, I do sometimes have problems processing conversation in the outside world as well and I have to be very careful about what settings I use to listen to anything with speech (this includes any song with lyrics). It's the sort of thing I eventually get used to doing automatically, but when sites put in "accessibility" features that make their sites less accessible, it doesn't help.
