I did not realise this, but apparently we are into the second day of Spock Obsession Awareness Week. Who knew there was such a thing, and was the Star Trek movie released to coincide with this? Anyway, here are some of the things we're discussing in the F1 world:

  • There was some excitement in the comments yesterday when some new Brawn GP merchandise was discovered. I'm pretty sure some things have already been ordered, which is excellent, but I am slightly annoyed that this luminous yellow thing doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.
  • Kovalainen is trying to remain positive, despite having a terrible car and enduring a pretty rubbish season so far. To quote: "I'm not dwelling on my sorrow." Um, overdramatic much? Five minutes ago Lewis was saying they just needed a few aero tweaks on the car and all would be well. Do we need a McLarenometer too?
  • Finally, as Steven pointed out in the comments yesterday, USGPE haven't actually decided whether they're going to enter F1 under the budget cap or not. Anderson has said that the figure is roughly what they were planning to spend anyway, so I can't see why they wouldn't, but it would certainly ruin Max's plans if they chose not to.

That'll do it for now. The edited version of this week's show is now available, if you want to have a listen. As per usual, I'll see you in the comments.

Parting shot from me tonight - this video featuring Robin Miller (massive pro-IndyCar anti-NASCAR guy) and Bob Varsha (F1 guy), both of SPEEDTV, appeared a couple of weeks ago and deserves a re-airing as we hit the Monaco/Indy/Charlotte weekend. Hilarious! A spoof on the Mac/PC ads I think..?

only error in the post is that nothing heikki says is ever overdramatic or wrong. He is a shining beacon of truth and every word he utters in any language is gospel. ;)

    Thanks

  • Joe in Florida19/05/2009 at 02:24

I was dissappointed to hear it may be while before we hear another. I told Christine that with all the BS F1 is producing right now there's lots of funny stuff out there

I was dissappointed to hear it may be while before we hear another. I told Christine that with all the BS F1 is producing right now there's lots of funny stuff out there

There will still be the Parade Lap and the Debrief, so lots of opportunities for us to be heard. :D

  • Joe in Florida19/05/2009 at 02:25

IT is a bit scary right now. IT seems F1 is about rip itself to shreds. Don't want to see an IRL/Champ Car thing go on with F1

  • Amy19/05/2009 at 02:26

i think its definitely time to start the steven roy fan club.

  • Joe in Florida19/05/2009 at 02:27

Amy didn't you host the last panel?

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:30

I was dissappointed to hear it may be while before we hear another. I told Christine that with all the BS F1 is producing right now there's lots of funny stuff out there

They are done in blocks of 6. The problem is that there is a car program called Top Gear at the time on a Sunday night when the shows are recorded and so we lose people to it and ended up delaying recordings till it finidhed. It is due back for a new series of 6 or 9 Sundays. If recording is delayed to suit there is no way to get a Debrief and a panel done.

It also helps keep things fresh. There will be a Parade Lap about 2 hours before the GP starts on Sunday. It is a live show only and does not become a podcast. This week because of times the plan is to take calls from people on Australia or New Zealand although no doubt some of us who are on regularly will fitin a quick call.

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:31

It's all politics and it has all happened 100 times before. it will get sorted with minimum real damage.

It is you fault I am still awake

  • Joe in Florida19/05/2009 at 02:31

Good point about keeping it fresh. I watch Top Gear on BBC America, very cool show. I could see how you'd lose people to that

  • Paul (oz)19/05/2009 at 02:32

This week because of times the plan is to take calls from people on Australia or New Zealand although no doubt some of us who are on regularly will fitin a quick call.

And what do we need to prepare, so we can call in?

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:33

Amy had never been on a shiw until two weeks ago. Then she was on a panel and on Sunday did a great job hosting it.

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:34

And what do we need to prepare, so we can call in?

Nothing special. Send Christine your skype contact if you have one so that she can call you.

Calls on the Parade Lap tend to be fairly short and normally amount to predictions etc. No doubt someone will fit a tremayne in.

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:34

    *app* that is

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:40

OK. Must see if I have a headset around somewhere. Times like this I wish I still had my Macbook.

Anyone who prefers can phone in a voicemail to be played on any show. That way if you screw up you can make several attempts. Christine can then play just the best one. Personally I prefer going on live and if I screw up I screw up.

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 02:41

Has anyone ever tried calling in with the iPhone Skype add?

There are a few people who have iphones and I know Gavin has just added the skype app but I don't know if anyone has actually used it yet.

  • Joe19/05/2009 at 02:41

I've got the time difference to deal with, so voice mail might be a great idea

  • Paul (oz)19/05/2009 at 02:42

skype sidepodcast. It is permanently set to voicemail apart from during live shows. Christine likes getting voice mails or e-mails to read out on shows so she will be happy to get a message from you.

  • Amy19/05/2009 at 02:55

not that I'm aware of. Someone asked thefifthdriver to get Lewis twittering and they replied 'how do you know hes not already' which means 'over our dead body, we tightly control our horrible PR'

  • Paul (oz)19/05/2009 at 02:56

I've only attended races in North America, 3 USGP's and 2 GPC's. My first was the dreaded 2005 USGP. But I am looking to do a fly-away race.

  • Amy19/05/2009 at 03:23

Did you see the Who? I would imagine the Aussie GP is one huge party, much like GPC

I did, The Who were great as were Kiss in 2008. Problem with the twilight race though was by the time The Who started it was very dark and cold and I'd been at the track for hours and was getting cranky. Melbourne is always a 4 day event rather than a 3 day, and they always had autograph signings before FIA made it compulsory. Always a great atmosphere since it's the first race of the year as well.

  • Amy19/05/2009 at 03:23

I have a friend in Montreal and he's confident it'll be back. The government is looking for a long term commitment, 10 years. So I think it''ll come again. But I think it will be helped by a USGP

very good point there. but if Ferrari win today, the may 29 deadline is pretty much doomed to become irrelevant.

but one would assume that if the wording in the contract is what Ferrari say it is, and if it is established that FOTA was established AFTER the FIA bypassed Ferrari, then Ferrari would have a very good chance of winning. most people seem to think that Ferrari will win this one.

  • Christine19/05/2009 at 09:49

most people seem to think that Ferrari will win this one.

    Everyone but Max, I'd say.

    Thats good :D

  • Journeyer19/05/2009 at 09:54

Absolutely. He always has a plan.

  • F1Wolf19/05/2009 at 10:02

very good point there. but if Ferrari win today, the may 29 deadline is pretty much doomed to become irrelevant.

I wonder how relevant it is anyway when:

    a) Mosley himself expects only about half of the current teams to sign up

    b) The budget cap or other cost saving measures are still far from finalized, how the new teams know what are they about to sign up for ...

  • F1Wolf19/05/2009 at 10:03

  • Journeyer19/05/2009 at 10:08

    a) Mosley himself expects only about half of the current teams to sign up

Excellent point, Wolf. I read him saying that if there are still vacant spots after the 29th, it'll be first come, first served. So the 29th of May is irrelevant already!

    b) The budget cap or other cost saving measures are still far from finalized, how the new teams know what are they about to sign up for ...

USF1 and Lola look like they'll sign up regardless of what happens to the cap - both teams feel they can compete with or without it in the regs. But the rest is a mystery...

I also wonder what they plan to do about the cap now. If there will be no two tiers as reported by Messrs Max and Bernie, then what will be the point for anyone to go with the cap ?

Max wants a cap, so if he wins, EVERYONE will have to obey it, whatever they think of it.

  • F1Wolf19/05/2009 at 10:27

Max wants a cap, so if he wins, EVERYONE will have to obey it, whatever they think of it.

well, I think that is the point, the teams believe they can't be forced to accept it. and the fact the the uncapped option was left in the regs hints that FIA was aware of that too ... we are in for some fun :-)

If you lived here, you'd understand. According to wiki:

The AFL is the most attended sporting league in Australia; it is also the most popular sport competition in terms of TV ratings in the nation. The AFL is currently the fourth-most attended professional sports league in the world in terms of attendance per match, with an average attendance of over 38,000.

darrens not smart enough to add captions apparently

eek. Ever since the Olympics asked people to buy tickets 18 months (?) in advance, it's sadly standard now. It means the investors can be sure about the whole leg of the tour months before needing to commit to it. Also, it creates those awkward moments of getting tickets with a "special someone" and then going with a new special someone by the time the gig rolls around. or taking your ex... aah memories.

I've worked it in the past and I don't really like the place from that perspective. May be better as a spectator.

But for crying out loud - it's the deal of the century! Take it!! :D

    Good afternoon peeps

    Hey Bassano.

If only courtTV existed in France, then we could've seen the Ferrari-FIA trial in court... it's about to start in 2 minutes.

  • Bassano Clapper19/05/2009 at 14:58

If only courtTV existed in France, then we could've seen the Ferrari-FIA trial in court... it's about to start in 2 minutes.

Ooh, surely it's only a preliminary hearing though...

  • Alianora La Canta19/05/2009 at 15:00

Completely off-topic, but I found this hilarious article on "How To Make A Prediction". I wonder how many of these techniques we will see in F1 press releases over the weekend?

  • Journeyer19/05/2009 at 15:00

Ooh, surely it's only a preliminary hearing though...

It may be preliminary, but Ferrari need to win it to move on to a full court case.

    And it has begun.

  • me19/05/2009 at 15:02

    And it has begun.

umm. you know it's 5pm in paris, right?

Not quite... Never be rude to an Arab

Can't - unless I can do the next weeks worth of work today - Some of the machines are arriving until friday. :(

Damn... damn damn damn damn damn! *this may or may not be what I am saying in real life... *

    There was some excitement in the comments yesterday when some new Brawn GP merchandise was discovered {original entry}

This complicates matters. Do I get a Mark I Brawn GP hat for Dad or order a Mark II one over the internet for a few pounds more?

  • Journeyer19/05/2009 at 15:04

Easily a Mark II hat - more worth it. Mark I hat is way too plain...

  • Amy19/05/2009 at 15:05

James Allen has put on weight since 2005.

I have just realised how many drivers on that grid I reeeeeally disliked.

I'd guess at tomorrow afternoon (i.e. start checking at noon GMT or 1pm European time). However, it is only a guess.

Fair enough. Who do you think will win?

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 16:02

I don't think I have time to complete a survey when the people involved want to shrge me to tell me what I said at the end of it. I am tempted to start an e-mail campaign to the magazine just to let them know how much we did not enjoy their last survey

  • Bassano Clapper19/05/2009 at 16:03

    The lawyers' financial advisors

To be fair, they only do that when ING are involved. Last year's survey was the only time they asked for my opinion and expected me to pay for it afterwards.

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 16:06

I tried several times to post my previous comment in the doohickey and got an error message each time. I switched to the lclt to post it and discovered that it was already there

    sidepodspace update

Hubble has been released. I missed it but I can't imagine it was very exciting.

Shuttle landing has been re-sceduled and I almost hate to think of the effect this will have on Christine but it is landing earlier than scheduled. The planned first attempt is now Friday 10am EDT which is 3pm UK. So I guess I need to spend a large part of Friday in fornt of a computer screen.

The whole point of twitter is that you can communicate with anyone. If you just tell her that it would be better if she replied occasionally that is fine. If you tell her that if she doesn't reply you are going to wait at the airport and follow her home you are verging on being a stalker

They said something about that on Top Gear. Just to get the nickel for the batteries into the car, they have to transport to like 3 different countries before it even gets near the production line!

yup. and then what happens when the battery dies (after about 18months, depending on how many miles you drive)?

  • Pat W19/05/2009 at 19:12

because people end up pouring money into the wrong hole. batteries are not the answer to the problem of renewable energy and the tesla will likely do the environment more long term damage than simply burning more gasoline.

They seem to be relying on advances in battery technology, or alternative on-board generating devices. How about a little wind turbine? Start it on the battery, then as the car gets quicker the turbine spins more thus recharging more. The faster you go the more charge you get. If you dawdle around like a grandmother you'll conk out.

That's the Green argument for you in a nutshell - they scream about solving the emissions problem but conveniently ignore that the electricity to charge it is probably generated by coal or gas, or that the batteries are shipped from across the world and are toxic, unrecyclable waste!

However for countries that have geothermal energy its not a 'bad' replacement (like Iceland).

The answer is that we need to use *less* resources/energy, not more. And if you want to run an electric car, its sensible to be able to charge it in ways that are not based on fossil fuels to create the electricity in the first place.... I could go on and on here, but this is SPC not the other places that I usually 'hang out' :-D

Instead of giving criminals time in jail, tell them that after a certain distance of pedalling (exercise bike) that they can go...e.g, breaking your ASBO - 1000 miles whereas murder - 100,000 miles. hook the bikes up to a dynamo...hook the dynamo up to the national grid...hey presto, never ending energy source!

Trust me when I tell you this: Oil will never run out - typically when a well "runs dry" it just means that the oil left in the reservoir is too hard to extract. Typically a "dry well" will at a maximum extract 30% of the reservoir.

In future, oil will just become harder and harder to extract causing the price to rise to a point where more expensive alternatives become cheaper. No solution is perfect, there is no magic bullet, we just need to use a combination of regular and aternative sources and hope that the oil companies continue to use innovate technologies to get the most out of their wells...

I have been telling people this for years. It is all propoganda to push the price up. When anyone talks about oil reserves they are talking about viable oil reserves. What is viable today was impossible a few years ago.

There was a guy in Texas who made a fortune out of the oil industry. At the time it was viable to go down 100 feet to get oil. He bought all the land he could where the oil was 200-500 feet down because he knew that as soon as there was no more at 100 feet a way would be found to go deeper. Everyone though he was insane buying up all this useless land which was no good for farming. He sat on it for a few years and then the oil companies came calling.

  • Bassano Clapper19/05/2009 at 19:34

What interests me most about oil is that we're putting processed dinosaurs into our cars

There's just a few billion years between the start and finish

  • Bassano Clapper19/05/2009 at 19:36

I think in Canada they are now refining oil retreived from sandy deposits rather than typical wells as it's in such abundance. Gavin may be able to confirm or clarify

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/05/2009 at 19:37

Imagine a sponge filled with water. Now poke a hole in the sponge and try to suck it out with a straw. Now imagine that straw is 5m long and the sponge is buried under pressure. That's a good analogy of a well...

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 19:40

You should also bear in mind that almost any organic compound can be converted into almost any other. Eventually oil will be made from coal when that becomes more economical. There are also areas where oil surveys have never taken place for many reasons which will eventually be explored.

Yes. The Oilsands are mined using diggers and the oil is extracted from the sands using giant screens and centrifugal pumps. The problem is that because it's sand whooshing around through the system, the machines corrode faster than an Italian car and have to be serviced regularly. One wonders how at $60 US a barrel that they are breaking even!

Yes. It was released earlier today and I think they have about two weeks of test and calibration before it goes back to normal observation.

The shuttle crew are doing their routine end of mission checks for damaged tiles and are then going to bed early to get themselves on schedule for landing ahead of schedule on Friday

I am closing this window to do coursework. If I am back before 11, hit me.

I've given up for the night. eevrything seems to work what I have done, and it's a pass worthy assignment im sure, so I'll see if I can add anymore just in case before my exam tomorrow. Which I've also prepared myself for quite well now considering how stressed I've been all day.

Which leads me on to apologising if my tweets have been really annoying tonight concerning my uni work.

    WHAT WAS I THINKING!?!?

  • Jon Waldock19/05/2009 at 21:09

    Just found this....

"Dave Thompson is a British stand-up comedian and actor, who hit the headlines in July 1997 after being sacked from the role of Tinky-Winky in hit children's television series, the Teletubbies. The BBC said in a letter to Thompson that his "interpretation of the role was not acceptable". This refers to the events in which Thompson claimed that he played "Tinky Winky" as homosexual."

    haha

  • Lukeh19/05/2009 at 21:11

    in 1997 i was 7, in 2001 i was 11... so between 7 and 11 i asked for Teletubby.....

And?? Never seems to be an issue that I have room for all sorts of assorted stuff that isn't even mine.

Mind you - I don't actually carry a 'handbag' as such. I tend to have an ever rotating number of cloth bags from trade shows rofl. I had a 'proper' posh bag once, but I could get everything I needed to (like folders, microphones, etc) in it!!

  • me19/05/2009 at 23:03

twitter might be quite popular :)

  • me19/05/2009 at 23:03

could it precede a larger one?

  • Steven Roy19/05/2009 at 23:04

could it precede a larger one?

    It's possible I suppose

  • Andy Taylor19/05/2009 at 23:05

could it precede a larger one?

That can happen, or not. It's hard to tell. We need the guy who predicted the recent quake in Italy - he was out by a few days and dismissed as an idiot. Sadly he wasn't an idiot.

  • lou19/05/2009 at 23:07

Eartquake is 4.1 on the Richter scale so not too serious

I remember my geography teacher telling us all about the major earthquake that happened along that fault line in the early 90s. He said that experts believe that there will still be a lot of activity across that fault line especially. funny the random facts i remember from year 8 geography.

    Jarno Trulli’sappeal for earthquake victims. Give money {Comment #342}

    Done so.

One thing that particularly pleased me is that Jarno's charity accepts Paypal. I'm registered to receive e-mail updates from Red Cross (long story) and they sent an emergency request for their own Abruzzo efforts, but got put off when they only accepted credit cards. For some reason the card I have isn't recognised as a credit card by some websites and it turned out the Red Cross site is one of them. Luckily by then I'd already heard of Abruzzo nel Cuore, so I simply waited for their site to be ready...

Just seen this on twitter from Lee McKenzie

    ‘Been at Nelson’s for last 3 hours helping cook. He’s invited his 20 mechanics and crew for dinner and drinks at his house to say thanks. …’ {Comment #366}

Does this mean we're going to have a repeat of the Heikki Kovalainen cooking item on ITV last year? I don't remember it doing Heikki much good and I doubt it will help Nelson either (except for the immediate problem of attempting to serve 20 hungry people by himself...)

  • Alianora La Canta20/05/2009 at 10:15

    it’s a great word. people were stunned that i knew it before i moved here. i think it might have an e at the end. {Comment #375}

Schadenfraude does indeed have an e at the end. "Malicious glee" is such an international concept that I'm surprised it's only the Germans who came up with such an elegant one-word term for it.

Alia, the joke was that somebody had changed the spelling to make fun of the politicians and their spending habits... Read the tweet again...

  • Alianora La Canta20/05/2009 at 10:18

    Read the tweet very carefully again - it’s a play on the word… {Comment #383}

Oh of course - Schaden Freud... (though I'm not sure whether that's literally "malicious Freud" or "gleeful Freud!)

  • Alianora La Canta20/05/2009 at 10:22

    She only has 1169 followers, how many tweets can she get? {Comment #406}

Quite a lot, especially if some people are like me and sometimes reply to people they don't follow.

In that case I don't get the joke. Perhaps I need to study some German to understand it...
