The fallout from the new FIA regulations is still reverberating around the world, and who are we to be any different? We're starting to get reactions from the paddock now, though, so there's plenty to mull over.

  • Button reckons that the wins system could work, and he can see the reasoning behind it but there is every likelihood it could put an early end to the championship. This is what I was fearing yesterday, but it's one of those things that won't cause a stir until it actually happens.
  • Bernie has defended the changes, particularly the budget cap for 2010. He reckons that every time there's a tweak to the regulations, people react strongly against it, but they soon get used to things. Hmm.
  • Meanwhile, Alonso has said that it's not the regulations that worry him so much as the constant need to change. He also uttered a really important quote: "Formula 1 has existed for over 50 years thanks to the teams, the sponsors, the drivers and, above all, the fans from all over the world, and none of them have been able to express their views in front of the FIA."

That'll do it for now. I'm keeping an eye on the action in Sebring and Jerez today, three cheers for cars in action. And as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

Never really been a big fan of Alonso's but sounds like he's speaking sense on this 1

No 'Grand Prix Evening' next week on the BBC by the way. Nor will there be any specific F1 related shows leading up to the first race either (Question of Sport etc).

  • Maverick19/03/2009 at 10:19

That's true. Let's be exact about this before the season starts though...

"I suppose an awful lot will depend on these [new] regulations, but if Brawn has got it right, then there is a chance that for the first three races we could maybe see Jenson winning Now that it is not points that decides the championship, if he has three races in his pocket then it is not bad..."

...if Brawn do win the championship it should have nothing to do with the points system and everything to do with a good package of driver and car. Stop trying to claim the credit, Bernie.

It was last year. There are three BTCC races and they show the support events as well such as Renault Clios, Formula Renault, Ginettas etc.

Gets the thumbs up from me!

Must remember to get Autosport while I'm out, then. The trouble with the Guardian's F1 preview being on Saturday is that I hardly ever get to buy a paper on that day, so I'll miss it. Oh well, someone's bound to be last-minute and release one next Thursday...

It was Jerez not Valencia. They were fast because of new parts on the car not the circuit change. So the spec they had at Barcelona is now obsolete and will never be raced.

true but renault were slow in barca and fast in jerez too. so are they much improved or is jerez less aero relevant?

  • me19/03/2009 at 13:31

Who knows any more. Maybe they have put helium in their tyres to reduce the weight.

    :)

my feeling is mclaren were sandbagging, but they still have genuine aero problems to resolve too

their other issue is all the rival teams have seen exactly how their aero is and isn't working thanks to flow vis, it's like 9 teams had one team working for them these past two months for free.

  • chris evans19/03/2009 at 13:33

Who knows any more. Maybe they have put helium in their tyres to reduce the weight.

That reminds me of a mythbusters episode where they tested the myth in NFL that some kickers used to use helium filled balls so they would fly further and stay in the air longer.

    Sadly, it doesn't work.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 13:34

    Sadly, it doesn’t work.

It wouldn't make any difference because the weight of the gas is irrelevant compared to the weight of the pigskin.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 13:37

their other issue is all the rival teams have seen exactly how their aero is and isn’t working thanks to flow vis, it’s like 9 teams had one team working for them these past two months for free.

The other teams probably haven't gained much because each aero package is pretty unique. For example anything that Renault saw would be no good o them because their fat nose would disperse the air differently to the McLaren nose so everything behind the nose is affected by that. Put the same sidepods, diffuser and rear wings on both cars and the performance would be totally different because the air being fed to it is in a different condition.

  • Journeyer19/03/2009 at 13:40

That reminds me of a mythbusters episode where they tested the myth in NFL that some kickers used to use helium filled balls so they would fly further and stay in the air longer.

    Sadly, it doesn’t work.

Because how far the kick went would also depend on momentum - I wouldn't be surprised if it went a shorter distance. It would be totally different in a tyre but I don't think helium would be all that good for temperature control - it's banned anyway.

  • Christine19/03/2009 at 13:46

That’s why I haven’t put a prediction in yet - dunno whats’s going to happen!

Isn't that the whole point of a prediction, though?

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 13:47

    Two words: Q2 simulation.

The interesting thing is Massa's comment that Ferrari could not match Button's time regardless how they set the car up and now Kaz has gone 6 tenths quicker. Rosberg is going to go faster with the same set up.

The more I read the more confused I get.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 13:49

Isn’t that the whole point of a prediction, though?

We are supposed to b knowledgable people who can assess all the testing info and deduce what will happen. Instead this season we are all completely clueless and are sticking pins in the newspaper to pick a winner.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/03/2009 at 13:49

That’s why I haven’t put a prediction in yet - dunno whats’s going to happen!

I thought a prediction was based on what you think will happen? I have no idea who will be in the top 3!

  • Maverick19/03/2009 at 13:51

McLaren were so involved in their problems that they haven't done the qualifying runs that everyone else has so their best times looked awful - all the paint and sensor arrays they've had fitted must be costing them time as well. Even two weeks ago they looked no worse than Renault on comparable runs. It's the Ferrari, BMW, Toyota and probably Brawn that they're worried about. I think they're getting there.

  • Christine19/03/2009 at 13:55

I thought a prediction was based on what you think will happen? I have no idea who will be in the top 3!

Hmm. Is there such a thing as aerospace blu tac?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/03/2009 at 14:13

I thought a prediction was based on what you think will happen? I have no idea who will be in the top 3!

and you’re about to host an f1 panel show?

Meanwhile, Alonso has said that it’s not the regulations that worry him so much as the constant need to change. He also uttered a really important quote: “Formula 1 has existed for over 50 years thanks to the teams, the sponsors, the drivers and, above all, the fans from all over the world, and none of them have been able to express their views in front of the FIA.”

Well Bernie should be happy, he has a World Champion making his thoughts known to the world and not hiding away.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 14:23

Possible alternative to Skype conference. I have twit running in the background and they just plugged an online conference thing. If you put /night at the end of the url you get 30 day free trial. I have no idea if this will work but it's worth looking at at least for the free 30 days.

He has another World Champion who's letting his feelings known: Michael Schumacher.

"I doubt the same goes for the new rules given out on such a late moment prior to the season - something which to me is really, well, astonishing, as in all the years, when the majority wanted to have a rule change for a good reason, they always said that would not be possible in a short term or so late before a season.

BBC have bought back the rights to The Boat Race from ITV. They only gave 'em up in 2005.

Soon there will be no other channels with sport!!

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 15:05

How many questions? I have about 3 in my head already…

You have total charge. You can do one question and say that's the show over. Most people do 6 or 7 rounds but its best to have a few extras in case something you think will provoke a lot of discussion gets one word answers.

i do have one question. how come when bgp are fast, they're running underweight. and when mclaren are fast... everyone should be worried?

  • Flibster19/03/2009 at 15:53

i do have one question. how come when bgp are fast, they’re running underweight. and when mclaren are fast… everyone should be worried?

McLaren rerely do low-fuel tests - 95% of their tests are with around half a tank of fuel on board.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 15:53

i do have one question. how come when bgp are fast, they’re running underweight. and when mclaren are fast… everyone should be worried?

Of course Kaz is still half a second faster.

so how fast could tey go with nico?

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 15:56

it would be a hell of a comeback if they found mega pace today.

They found the pace yesterday. Before that their best time was about 4 seconds behind Brawn. Yesterday they got within a second. Today they have presumably optimised what they were doing yesterday and put a bit more into getting a time.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 15:57

so how fast could tey go with nico?

17.1? 16.9? Who knows any more?

  • Maverick19/03/2009 at 15:58

i do have one question. how come when bgp are fast, they’re running underweight. and when mclaren are fast… everyone should be worried?

I wouldn't say that is as fast as the Brawn necessarily, as it's a different day and different track conditions. What it isn't though is hanging around at the back of the grid as last week's times suggested. Is the Brawn as far out in front as Autosport suggest and Massa is worrying about? That'll be fun to find out, maybe not once we realise we're having a one team championship but up to that point.

  • toxicfusion19/03/2009 at 15:59

What are the temperatures/conditions at Jerez? not taking anything away from McLaren but it is something that needs to be considered.

Every other day the site has shown air and tract temps but not today.

  • Jon Waldock19/03/2009 at 16:02

Just been thinking about Bernie wanting to bring in a 20 race calendar...

"I would like to see 20 races on the calendar but it is a case of trying to convince the teams,"

Is he trying to kill the teams? And its not like the new races are going to be european...they're trying to lower costs but they'll have to have spare members of the team to fly to certain races. People can't cope with that kind of season.

  • toxicfusion19/03/2009 at 16:04

Every other day the site has shown air and tract temps but not today.

As soon as Renault and BrawnGP left, everything has become so secrative. McLaren or Williams paying people to keep things quiet?

    Really off topic...

Chap I work with had his first helicopter flying lesson today with a friend of his fathers. He had a hell of a shock. Normally the lessons are done in little helicopters that look more like toys...

His dad's friend is Vietnam veteran and operates a Vietnam veteran Huey gunship :D

First lesson in a genuine Bell Huey with deactivated gund and rocked pods hanging off it. Lucky sod.

is there much point in me complaining about the most race wins system for this year? i am not happy. i thought initially that it was for 2010 and so they had 12 months to pull out of the idea. oh well. it's a shame that f1 seems to be losing it's gloss because of rule changes :(

it seems my theory about the f1.com site being a testing ground for the medals/points concept was wrong, or whoever compiled the results, decided that it was the question that was wrong, rather than the answer.

Secret apart from a certain question that may require research for, in which you share on the wiki. Thats the way we do it.

There was one for sale in the Chrysler/Dodge dealer in Norwich a few years ago. Chap bought it and on the way out of the dealers car park in it, the rear end slid out and he broke one of the rear wheels *at £1k each* and bent some of the suspension components.

  • RG19/03/2009 at 19:05

we have, but what do you think about it?

I think that he really needs to come in the top 2. Cos if you can't beat ex f1 drivers then you have no hope of getting their former seats.

Ouch. I can just imagine the dealer watching out of the window, laughing to himself while he counts his money.

According to Mark Hughes in Autosport Mark Stewart has made a film about Jim CLark to go with his two previous films on Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill. Hughes says that he has heard a rumour that BBC are going to show all three over the Easter weekend.

Mark Hughes also claimed that before he saw the premiere/press launch of the film he had never heard Jim Clark speak. How can you be a serious F1 journalist for as long as he has been and work for Autosport and never have seen any video clip with Jim Clark speaking?

Klien's car went 0.1 seconds faster than Franck's.

    YES!

Oops, obviously the wrong place to say that, I'll go outside.

Klien’s car went 0.1 seconds faster than Franck’s.

    in le seb's hands.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 20:41

    YES!

It doesn't make any difference over a 12 hour race. The interesting thing is both cars did very few laps. 2 for one and 3 for the other. I guess they wanted the bare minimum running so they are both capable of being faster.

  • Dave In NZL19/03/2009 at 21:07

I don't see too much chatter about Williams' awesome lap time at Jerez today. Incredible.

I was thinking about my quali expectations this morning on the way to work (NZL time, remember) and didn't have the Williams anywhere near the top.

    Hmmm...

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 21:09

I don’t see too much chatter about Williams’ awesome lap time at Jerez today. Incredible.

I think everyone is stunned. According to Clive that time was set on a three lap run so it is likely a quali simulation.

    It finished ages ago.

Another thought on this insane new way of choosing a champion. Assume the tech regs stay constant and this year's cars are legal for next season. Also assume that a team can do what Brawn did this year and deliver a car that is quick out of the box. Surely what they should do is not launch a new car at the start of the season but let all the teams who do fight over the wins. Then launch a car 6 or 8 races in with several months more development in it and clean up the end of season races.

  • me19/03/2009 at 21:54

Then launch a car 6 or 8 races in with several months more development in it and clean up the end of season races.

yeah, but brawn had some pre-season testing. could they do that with none?

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 21:58

yeah, but brawn had some pre-season testing. could they do that with none?

It has been done with just a shake down or two before. Bear in mind all a team needs is a few GP2 drivers to put some miles on it. I think there is no limit on the number of young drivers a team can test. Add in a lot of straight line testing and a few demos. Should be enough.

  • me19/03/2009 at 21:58

don't ask me what the yellow micra is about, but the sun sets on albert park:

did i misread something, cause i thought that was only after the season ends?

  • me19/03/2009 at 22:01

Add in a lot of straight line testing and a few demos. Should be enough.

straight line testing is limited too, but i guess 8 would be enough mid season.

the risk is, you'd look like a wally until the summer, and then if it failed, you'd look like a wally until winter. it's a risk, but you're right the option is there.

you could say str did it last year in fact, and it worked a treat.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 22:05

did i misread something, cause i thought that was only after the season ends?

I thought young drivers could test in season. This is ridiculous. How can the rules be changed so often even people like us who spend hours on this every day don't have a ******** clue what is going on?

If their quality control had been any good there would not have been a problem. If their designs had been properly done they would not have had a different CO2 scrubber in the command module to the LEM. Typical civil service unlimited budget thinking. We will have one round CO2 scrubber and one square.

Entitled Dreamsphere: A Racing Car Comes To Life, it tells - or rather Sebastian Vettel tells - the story of the RB5 from Factory to track.

Check it out at www.redbullracing and do let us know what you think at feedback@redbullf1.com

That's a bit unfair - there's like a million parts in the thing!

The point is they did stuff they weren't supposed to do to get the guys home. The CO2-scrubber thing was because two different companies made the CSM and the LEM - hardly NASA's fault???

Regardless of the screw-ups, it was very impressive with the odds being 3/5th's of Gonda Success of them returning that they got them home...

We will have one round CO2 scrubber and one square.

This is true, but the ingenuity of the ground engineers in coming up with a solution was nothing short of genius. Oh, and they used gaffer tape too :)

i can't believe a team capable of creating such a fab piece of cutting edge video, still need feedback via email.

however, it's that good that i don't mind, and i shall do so.

They did a good job of disaster recovery but the thing was a massive failure.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/03/2009 at 23:06

The point is they did stuff they weren’t supposed to do to get the guys home. The CO2-scrubber thing was because two different companies made the CSM and the LEM - hardly NASA’s fault???

NASA gave them the specs and NASA was in charge of the project. A bunch of boy scouts would not have made a mistake like that.

Fine. If you think that you could have got a man to the moon in less than 8 years AND had to find all the smart people AND had to make the astronauts AND get all the technology invented and working any better than NASA then be my guest. I guess that makes the Russians worse than a cubs troupe then?

Contrast that with F1's development in the 60's - basically the cars were the same, save for very crude wings and slightly better tyres. Hardly on a par with the 'boy scouts'!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/03/2009 at 23:07

Oh, and they used gaffer tape too :)

They used the Force to bring them back :-D

Hehe. I still love Alan Sheperds quote, when asked what he was thinking of while strapped into his spacecraft waiting to become the first American in space - "that every component was made by the lowest bidder."

Greetings from a rather busy Milton Keynes.

Just thought the good people who visit the site might like to know the clever people who created our Webber And Vettel Rip Through The Rule Book film have only gone and outdone themselves again.

Entitled Dreamsphere: A Racing Car Comes To Life, it tells - or rather Sebastian Vettel tells - the story of the RB5 from Factory to track.

Five Pints of Awesome... that's what I think about it!

I'm off to buy more cans of your lovely sweet and sticky caffeine water to fund more of these videos!

  • lou19/03/2009 at 23:22

good evening my sidepodpals. i hope you're all well.

  • Steven Roy19/03/2009 at 23:22

Anyone here got TOCA racing? Thoughts?

I used to have it and it was a good game but I could never make it run for any length of time. I spent more time trying to fix it than actually playing it. It is a running theme with Codemasters games. At the time I checked their forum and it was full of people with the same problem.

  • Christine19/03/2009 at 23:23

Good times. TOCA 2 and 3 on the playstation were brilliant games :)

  • lou19/03/2009 at 23:25

    Hi Lou, how are you?

very tired. i got back like 1/2 hour ago from our first performance of Les Mis. It's been a very stressful day with the second spot light lamp being broken and trying to find another in a matter of hours. plus i've been in high heels all day so my feet hurt. but other than that i'm very happy :D

lol i didn;t have time to change them :( i do have flat shoes... but today was so hectic everytime i sat down to change them i was called to do something else. lol

Kovi went a lot faster in testing and almost matched Jenson's time. Kaz went half a second faster. Nothing else.

  • Bassano Clapper19/03/2009 at 23:41

    4th Audi

    5th Franck

    Well, maybe in the past

Since Manchester 1985 they've been a bit more progreesive on combustibles in the cabin. Aluminium Honeycomb filled composites and plastics mostly, these days I think

  • Steven Roy20/03/2009 at 00:05

    wha?

Paper bulkhead painted with Aluminium paint and claimed it was metal.

  • me20/03/2009 at 00:05

They refused to believe it was fireproof

  • Flibster20/03/2009 at 00:12

Haven’t bulkheads been made of paper?

    Chapman tried that.

The story I heard from someone in the team was they extended the chassis by an inch and covered in in tin foil - looked exactly the same as the fireproof bulkhead they were meant to be using but weight significantly less.

    :D

again? i thought you were enjoying it?

  • Steven Roy20/03/2009 at 00:47

again? i thought you were enjoying it?

Enjoying Lotus performance. Not enjoying Lotus reliability. Today I had the fastest car for the firs half of the race then had an accident and was slooooooow. No re-fueling in 86 so my fastest lap was 2 seconds slower than my team mates.

    McNish fastest. Franck's car 2nd

  • me20/03/2009 at 00:48

    McNish fastest. Franck’s car 2nd

    sounds familiar!

  • Bassano Clapper20/03/2009 at 00:49

    What happens at 601mph?

The risk of supersonic airflow over the wings of a subsonic aircraft negates the need to worry about the integrity of your speed tape

    Well, almost

(B747 max speed is apparently 608mph)

  • Bassano Clapper20/03/2009 at 00:55
