The fallout from the new FIA regulations is still reverberating around the world, and who are we to be any different? We're starting to get reactions from the paddock now, though, so there's plenty to mull over.
- Button reckons that the wins system could work, and he can see the reasoning behind it but there is every likelihood it could put an early end to the championship. This is what I was fearing yesterday, but it's one of those things that won't cause a stir until it actually happens.
- Bernie has defended the changes, particularly the budget cap for 2010. He reckons that every time there's a tweak to the regulations, people react strongly against it, but they soon get used to things. Hmm.
- Meanwhile, Alonso has said that it's not the regulations that worry him so much as the constant need to change. He also uttered a really important quote: "Formula 1 has existed for over 50 years thanks to the teams, the sponsors, the drivers and, above all, the fans from all over the world, and none of them have been able to express their views in front of the FIA."
That'll do it for now. I'm keeping an eye on the action in Sebring and Jerez today, three cheers for cars in action. And as ever, I'll see you in the comments.
Never really been a big fan of Alonso's but sounds like he's speaking sense on this 1
Never really been a big fan of Bernie's and sounds like he's talking out of his backside on this 1
I was under the impression that was the only orifice he communicated from anyway
No 'Grand Prix Evening' next week on the BBC by the way. Nor will there be any specific F1 related shows leading up to the first race either (Question of Sport etc).
That's true. Let's be exact about this before the season starts though...
"I suppose an awful lot will depend on these [new] regulations, but if Brawn has got it right, then there is a chance that for the first three races we could maybe see Jenson winning Now that it is not points that decides the championship, if he has three races in his pocket then it is not bad..."
...if Brawn do win the championship it should have nothing to do with the points system and everything to do with a good package of driver and car. Stop trying to claim the credit, Bernie.
booo! was that only a rumour, or did they cancel plans?
Rumour. Steve Rider and Louise Goodman will be presenting BTCC coverage on ITV4 this season which will be a full six hours per race.
SIX HOURS?
Wot no preview prog or nothing........
It was last year. There are three BTCC races and they show the support events as well such as Renault Clios, Formula Renault, Ginettas etc.
Gets the thumbs up from me!
That seems like a heck of a lot. Back in the ´90's you were lucky if you got ½ an hour of highlights!
more interesting than push-to-pass:

:)
:( aww no. :(
This week's Autosport is their 2009 F1 preview edition. Similarly, The Guardian will have their '09 guide in the Saturday edition of the paper. Going last year's, I would recommend it.
i haven't read the bumper christmas special yet :(
Shame. :(
Woohoo! It's beaten the Moller Skycar.
It does make me think of the Flying Car short film that Kevin Smith did.
Moderated. :(
No F1 evening? Pity.
Finally found a copy of Top Gear F1 2009 :D It's pretty good.
Time to leave the travelling masses of our fine capital to there own devices, I'm going home.
Catch you guys later this evening.
Even Schumi's not impressed!!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73778
"I doubt the same goes for the new rules given out on such a late moment prior to the season - something which to me is really, well, astonishing, as in all the years, when the majority wanted to have a rule change for a good reason, they always said that would not be possible in a short term or so late before a season."
This week’s Autosport is their 2009 F1 preview edition. Similarly, The Guardian will have their ‘09 guide in the Saturday edition of the paper. {Comment #14}
Must remember to get Autosport while I'm out, then. The trouble with the Guardian's F1 preview being on Saturday is that I hardly ever get to buy a paper on that day, so I'll miss it. Oh well, someone's bound to be last-minute and release one next Thursday...
I loved Nico's response to the new regulations. He summed it up beautifully:
"What is this nonsense?"
It'll be the Guardian's website anyway.
Having just flicked through it, the Autosport preview isn't anything to write home about.
Got it.
much usefulness:

also, internet explorer 8 (final) is out later today:

is anyone having a lot of problems with autpsort at the moment?
All the pages lose most of their formatting within a few seconds of loading...
What do you mean? It looks okay to me.
Ok here? Might be your browser? I recommend using Netscape Navigator 1.0
I've drop.io'd a screengrab:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sillythingy-png
Every other site is fine but every article on autosport initially laods fine, then within a second, it all goes like that and just no images apart from the header. The small version of the pic doesn;t show it clear enough but all the images at the top get replaced with text, all the font changes to times new roman, etc, Bit annoying :(
Hi everyone, how are we all?
I see it's a busy news day:
I have a much modifed version of that with a few more drinks on it - it misses my personal favourite, Americano - plus a much nicer colourscheme. ;)
I drink tea....
So I am on google street view just about:
http://tinyurl.com/dy7u9u
So do I, I've got a couple of kg of different leaf teas in the cupboard.
Buy it all online now from a really good shop in Norwich *where I used to live* and Hasbean for coffee.
And here's the original of the coffee drinks:
http://www.lokeshdhakar.com/2007/08/20/an-illustrated-coffee-guide/
I with you on the Americano front!
Been playing with this all morning! Zooming up and down roads that I use on a daily basis BUT ONLINE!
On a serious note, it's quite nifty and one has to wonder how things will progress in the future (real-time updates?)
hehe! you're famous.
Heh, that's awesome! Looks like they have done most of birmingham as well, it's like being home!
Autosport's testing analysis: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73781
McLaren at the back, Brawn GP at the front.
even after the late comeback yesterday?
Taking into account the long runs they all did, yes. A bit better in terms of fastest lap times though.
Data is from Barcelona last week over long-runs.
It reads more like an advert to buy the magazine (see bottom of said article)
Woah woah woah!
Hold on, they've added content to the article in the past twenty minutes? Unless I'm going nuts! Initially it only had the one comparison.
if you wait long enough, you won't need to buy the mag :)
Was it Autosport who did that weirdo testing analysis before that was like, it's all the hours put together, minus their fastest lap, their slowest lap, their inside leg measurement?
I remember us being a bit confused by it, but I forget where we spotted it.
that was them.
My house is on it too!
both doors?
subs required, but simon moulton sat in franck's seat:
"After 50 laps I emerged fairly battered and sore. I used a padded-out version of Montagny's seat and I received a fair amount of bruises on my back, because I was submarining slightly under braking."
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2049
You can only see one of the doors because of something which is rather amazing to admit on an F1 blog...
We don't have a road in front of our house! Which isn't a factor as we don't own a car!!!
I think this information may have broken Sidepodcast!
:)
OH MY GOD

The part of my that's still 10 years old just wet himself with excitement.
Webber speaks his mind on recent changes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7952566.stm
SidePodInnerChild meet? :D
Mark Webber on the budget limit of £30m:
Well that's an... interesting way of putting it. But he is in support of the points to a certain point.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7952566.stm
Dank beat me to it by 20 seconds, bah! :P
The Autosport analysis is based on Barcelona data. So utterly useless as far as McLaren is concerned.
yeeeeeah :D
Putting McLaren at the back makes more headlines and sells more magazines, too ;-)
is it not true that barcelona is more aero relevant? not to mention thet actually race there.
what use is being fast in the part of valencia not on the calendar?
Bruno Senna testing DTM now
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73773
It was Jerez not Valencia. They were fast because of new parts on the car not the circuit change. So the spec they had at Barcelona is now obsolete and will never be raced.
oops. my bad.
true but renault were slow in barca and fast in jerez too. so are they much improved or is jerez less aero relevant?
Just checked today's times and everything is on its head now. Kovi has done an 18.4 like yesterday. Kaz has done a 17.4 in the Williams????? That is 0.6s faster than the Brawn managed. wtf
http://www.f1today.nl/live-update/2009/03/19/circuito-de-Jerez/
temp or rubber?
Who knows any more. Maybe they have put helium in their tyres to reduce the weight.
:)
my feeling is mclaren were sandbagging, but they still have genuine aero problems to resolve too
their other issue is all the rival teams have seen exactly how their aero is and isn't working thanks to flow vis, it's like 9 teams had one team working for them these past two months for free.
That reminds me of a mythbusters episode where they tested the myth in NFL that some kickers used to use helium filled balls so they would fly further and stay in the air longer.
Sadly, it doesn't work.
It wouldn't make any difference because the weight of the gas is irrelevant compared to the weight of the pigskin.
The other teams probably haven't gained much because each aero package is pretty unique. For example anything that Renault saw would be no good o them because their fat nose would disperse the air differently to the McLaren nose so everything behind the nose is affected by that. Put the same sidepods, diffuser and rear wings on both cars and the performance would be totally different because the air being fed to it is in a different condition.
Two words: Q2 simulation.
Again, testing is BS, we have no idea what the real pace is until next weekend.
That's why I haven't put a prediction in yet - dunno whats's going to happen!
Because how far the kick went would also depend on momentum - I wouldn't be surprised if it went a shorter distance. It would be totally different in a tyre but I don't think helium would be all that good for temperature control - it's banned anyway.
Isn't that the whole point of a prediction, though?
The interesting thing is Massa's comment that Ferrari could not match Button's time regardless how they set the car up and now Kaz has gone 6 tenths quicker. Rosberg is going to go faster with the same set up.
The more I read the more confused I get.
We are supposed to b knowledgable people who can assess all the testing info and deduce what will happen. Instead this season we are all completely clueless and are sticking pins in the newspaper to pick a winner.
I thought a prediction was based on what you think will happen? I have no idea who will be in the top 3!
McLaren were so involved in their problems that they haven't done the qualifying runs that everyone else has so their best times looked awful - all the paint and sensor arrays they've had fitted must be costing them time as well. Even two weeks ago they looked no worse than Renault on comparable runs. It's the Ferrari, BMW, Toyota and probably Brawn that they're worried about. I think they're getting there.
That was my excuse for the whole of last year and I still got told off for it.
So who do you think is going to win at Le Seb Ring?
McNish.
Good choice. Interesting that you can predict the winner of that race which you know practically nothing about but not F1 which you spend your life on.
I can now. New Year's Resolution and all that.
Still sticking to your resolution. That deserves a reward.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMCf7SNUb-Q
and you're about to host an f1 panel show?
that's like asking who's gonna win the rally though?
Shhh.
:D
sidepodspace
This is spacewalk day. the spacewalk starts at 1:13pm Eastern 5:13pm UK.
Today they are going to install the truss section that the solar panels are going to be mounted on.
If only.
Important question: will there be a toolbag?
Unless they plan to attach 15 tons of metal with blu tac there will be a tool bag.
That's a downer, next year's British Motor Show has been cancelled.
Hmm. Is there such a thing as aerospace blu tac?
I am??? :-O Someone else must be keen, surely!
Your on the list for Sunday.
If there is not we should invent it.
nope. tis your turn.
I have made us a page to keep track:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Inventions
Gavin, if you're not keen on doing it this weekend, let me know. ;)
Well Bernie should be happy, he has a World Champion making his thoughts known to the world and not hiding away.
Possible alternative to Skype conference. I have twit running in the background and they just plugged an online conference thing. If you put /night at the end of the url you get 30 day free trial. I have no idea if this will work but it's worth looking at at least for the free 30 days.
www.gotomeetings.com/night
He has another World Champion who's letting his feelings known: Michael Schumacher.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73778
interesting. me look.
Use that for work - it's for sharing desktops and things like that, but can do VOIP as well,
Well I can do it this weekend no probs. J, are you available to do it other weekends or is this your one-shot?
I'm available other weekends. Just thought you might not be available. Go ahead, by all means. :)
OK I'll do it this weekend then. What time will the show be? 7pm SIT (Sidepod-Ish Time)?
panel will follow debrief i'd imagine. 9-ish?
OK sounds good. I hope that we can finish by 11pm GMT (sleep time) ;-)
it's in your hands ;)
We're doomed then! :-D
How many questions? I have about 3 in my head already...
By the way,
I have gone a whole day at work today with no music or podcasts on. I can't even remember the last time I did that!
Must be the fumes...
Is there a list of testing times at the moment avaliable?
Hi all, i'm commenting from my bed....have spent the week off with various fun illness, i get a new one each day! :P bad times hehe
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/124092
on a lighter note...i love that picture ^^ just found it.
BBC have bought back the rights to The Boat Race from ITV. They only gave 'em up in 2005.
Soon there will be no other channels with sport!!
You have total charge. You can do one question and say that's the show over. Most people do 6 or 7 rounds but its best to have a few extras in case something you think will provoke a lot of discussion gets one word answers.
quick, buy boatracebigpicture.com ;)
God bless Auntie Beeb. They always did a good job with sport when I lived in the UK...
Variety is the spice of life.
don't encourage her :P
Great pic - it's almost like that car has two chassis?
:) I'm not sure a 15 minute race would keep us going all year, sadly.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/leseb-jpeg
how much f1 testing has he done this year?
He's going to be well into it when he arrives in Australia - I wonder if it will give him an advantage?
I soooo want him to beat the Potato!
The boat race this year is the same day as the GP. Why does everything always happen at once?
red bull have done it again, check out this awesome video:
http://bit.ly/f1-dreamsphere
THAT.WAS.AMAZING
just watched it again :)
why are you wanting to watch the boat race?
I liked it.
we used to watch it because my bro went to cambridge and we loved mocking him when they lost....:P
Hey, have they found a way around the windtunnel rules by pretending to be filming? :-)
i thought they'd found a solution, by getting that guy to rotate the blades by hand :)
A 1:17.946 from McLaren... that'll make some people stop and reconsider.
woah!
can someone link me to the live timing thing, i seem to keep loosing the link, i really should bookmark it
http://www.f1today.nl/live-update/2009/03/19/circuito-de-Jerez/
I thought they had given up for the day. That is the first update in hours.
thank you :)
I guess a 17.9 with Kovi is a 17.4/17.6 with Lewis driving.
i do have one question. how come when bgp are fast, they're running underweight. and when mclaren are fast... everyone should be worried?
McLaren rerely do low-fuel tests - 95% of their tests are with around half a tank of fuel on board.
It's back to the earlier conversation where none of us know what is really happening.
haha, niceeee. its all about expectancy...give yourself 7 days and all will be revealed!
Of course Kaz is still half a second faster.
it would be a hell of a comeback if they found mega pace today.
so how fast could tey go with nico?
They found the pace yesterday. Before that their best time was about 4 seconds behind Brawn. Yesterday they got within a second. Today they have presumably optimised what they were doing yesterday and put a bit more into getting a time.
17.1? 16.9? Who knows any more?
I wouldn't say that is as fast as the Brawn necessarily, as it's a different day and different track conditions. What it isn't though is hanging around at the back of the grid as last week's times suggested. Is the Brawn as far out in front as Autosport suggest and Massa is worrying about? That'll be fun to find out, maybe not once we realise we're having a one team championship but up to that point.
What are the temperatures/conditions at Jerez? not taking anything away from McLaren but it is something that needs to be considered.
Every other day the site has shown air and tract temps but not today.
Just been thinking about Bernie wanting to bring in a 20 race calendar...
"I would like to see 20 races on the calendar but it is a case of trying to convince the teams,"
Is he trying to kill the teams? And its not like the new races are going to be european...they're trying to lower costs but they'll have to have spare members of the team to fly to certain races. People can't cope with that kind of season.
As soon as Renault and BrawnGP left, everything has become so secrative. McLaren or Williams paying people to keep things quiet?
1:17.933 now, so it's no one off time
We need live sector timing.
Oddly enough its one of the few things more exciting on radio than on tv
Now that the teams are going to share more data during races I wonder if that'll extend to testing to any extent?
A long time to wait to find out - see you for testing in January!
Really off topic...
Chap I work with had his first helicopter flying lesson today with a friend of his fathers. He had a hell of a shock. Normally the lessons are done in little helicopters that look more like toys...
His dad's friend is Vietnam veteran and operates a Vietnam veteran Huey gunship :D
First lesson in a genuine Bell Huey with deactivated gund and rocked pods hanging off it. Lucky sod.
I think the sound of a Huey would put me off. I played a couple of Vietcong games. I would hear the sound and be right back in the game.
I just have the urge to listen to Ride of Valkyries very loud now. :D
cept for young driver testing?
Thats excellent!:D
Woohoo! 300 Fantasy Racers teams :)
yippee. who was no #300?
FIXMRIDE
hehe.
any idea how many FR teams there are in total now?
In the entire thing?
yeah.
2387.
I am number 35 which is the highest I will ever be.
that is a fipping huge amount of teams!
you ought to get a screenshot of your 35 :)
I am, but sadly, you are above me, so that will always go on record as well.
your life sucks :D
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/fantasyracers-jpg-jpg
Lets be honest here, I'm ahead of both of ya
*Waits for Ollie to come along
:D
I wouldn't be surprised if I come last in the league, soley due to my inability to face the fact that Heikki is very expensive and won't get many points.
tf108 at goodwood this year:
"Toyota will provide crowd-thrilling speed, sound and spectacle at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, led by its 2008 Formula 1 contender, the Toyota TF108."

aww. if kovi does well, it'll be the surprise of the year, but he's had plenty of seat time.
he might surprise you/me/himself ;)
my catchphrase in the pub last year was "just wait, Kovalainen will win it"
So when he did it was a pretty huge night for me!
is there much point in me complaining about the most race wins system for this year? i am not happy. i thought initially that it was for 2010 and so they had 12 months to pull out of the idea. oh well. it's a shame that f1 seems to be losing it's gloss because of rule changes :(
it seems my theory about the f1.com site being a testing ground for the medals/points concept was wrong, or whoever compiled the results, decided that it was the question that was wrong, rather than the answer.
on a personal note, i'm off to go look at mummies at the museum. all perfectly normal around here :)
Doing that on Saturday - off to the British Museum. Not been there in years.
what's your catchphrase this year?
tweet from midwkmotorsport:
"just to clarify, qualifying is at 14:30 EST/18:30 UK and can be seen at www.speedtv.com with commentary from www.radiolemans.com"
ace :)
Probably something along the lines of "Heikki? he's not that bad!"
:D
question... this is supposed to be the off-season, right? only since we wrote this post:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/12/31/1000-posts-100000-comments-and-counting/
wordpress stats says the site has received a further 43,000+ comments. what in the world have we all been discussing?
I have no choice but to support Heikki, I'm a huge McLaren fan but I just don't like Hamilton. Plus I've had a soft spot for the Finn+McLaren combo since I first heard the name Mika Hakkinen :)
My god are we a chatty bunch.
The best off season ever?
That could be a good possibility. I'm surprised cos there has really been nothing to talk about.
I reckon at least half of them were in the few hours after the rule changes :D
I think it was the never ending stream of rumours surrounding the demise and return of Bronda.
i think so :)
i think alms qualifying is going to be broadcast live here:
http://almsmichelin.globalmediaservices.tv/
in 10 mins maybe?
i have sound but not video...anyone else?
i just have nothing!
ahh, pictures and john h.
i have the duset tones of John Hindhaugh
no pics? looking at the pitlane right now.
That freaky - it opens up 2 the same video twice....
nope, just audio and the same picture that we had ages ago whilst waiting
aaaah. clicked on full screen and it works
ace :)
gt cars first. any idea who's driving for peugeot?
Direct link to the video stream

your a star :)
Welcome.
Having a packet sniffer helps a lot with stuff like this. ;)
i love the bmw
God that sounded good!
No idea what it was, I was out of the room - but what an exhaust note!
Ok, it was the 'Vette
Love that noise!
Go to GT races, being an F1 fan we often forget the deep throatey notes :D
well you jinxed that, didn't ya?
I do go to the odd GT race and Historic LeMans, but that is mental. :D
Broken Beemer. :)
Feels great to have multiscreens again
yesssss :D hehe
Ooooh. Viper....... :D
Take a truck engine and a car chassis made from pig iron.... 8.3litres of stupidity. :D
Efficient Dynamics.... ;)
It's a very efficient BMW at the moment. No CO2 coming from it at all.
So shall I keep the questions for the panel secret, give them to sidepodcast or make them public?
Looks damn good though
I see Bruno Senna most likely to be heading off to DTM.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73773
The odds you already mentioned it might be high, but mweh.
secret, unless the last one requires any preparation from the panellists.
Secret apart from a certain question that may require research for, in which you share on the wiki. Thats the way we do it.
what rg said :)
we have, but what do you think about it?
Its insane. :D
There was one for sale in the Chrysler/Dodge dealer in Norwich a few years ago. Chap bought it and on the way out of the dealers car park in it, the rear end slid out and he broke one of the rear wheels *at £1k each* and bent some of the suspension components.
I think that he really needs to come in the top 2. Cos if you can't beat ex f1 drivers then you have no hope of getting their former seats.
Ouch. I can just imagine the dealer watching out of the window, laughing to himself while he counts his money.
There was some shock, followed by sniggering.
fair point :)
DTM has always shouted career suicide to me, but im quite happy to be proved wrong!!
I have finished reading today's comments would like to agree with RG:
He has to do something this year...
ehehe
But unlike most websites with thousands of comments, here they aren't all arguments and insults.
ALMS?
He should have gone back to GP2...
Indeed he does, but i don't think i've ever seen a wanna be F1 driver go into DTM and come back and get a race drive
Going from Pre-F1 championship to F1 drivers retirement championship - without F1.. :D
agreed
You go to DTM to get put out to pasture.
Plus it's crap and irrelevant.
Very little F1 happened today, and we still manage to get 240 comments and counting out of it. ;)
Franck is in action later though, the comments will go through the roof!
Actually, do we know if Ant is doing any racing this year?
Isn't he doing 5live commentary this year?
He is, but if I were him I wouldn't make that my priority if any racing opportunities come up.
He's doing something for the BBC...?
Oh, btw, who won the quiz? I missed the end...
You came second ahead of Steven, it was kimster who won it. I beat Mr C by half a point
yup.
:(
I can't quite remember what happened when he did the commentary for ITV...
I have a feeling that it's something that Lou would remember better than me. ;)
And aren't about to let him for get it! :D
I was a point behind him, not a bad place to be.
At least your getting better.
blatant plug, but how cool does this look:
http://www.f1bigpicture.com/
:)
Oh god... not only is the Audi DIEsel and as such it sounds really dull, it's hideous.
i likes the front of it.
VERY
Even he found it hard to get as excited as JA was. ;)
me too
Le Seb is out in the Peugoat
woo!
I'd love that pic in 1920x1200...
:)
i don't think we have it that big sadly. tis gorgeous though.
When exactly does the race start on Sunday?
klien looses it.
saturday?
Klien spins it. Woohoo!
Nobody saw that right?
Whoops sorry!
What time?
bourdais in 2nd.
18:30 i believe.
GMT?
yes. i think:
http://twitter.com/MidwkMotorsport/statuses/1355527528
damn audi are fast.
i forgot how much these cars move about! these tracks really are bumpy
Not the only thing they need though. They need reliability.
XM Radio thingy dropped the Audi to 2nd. :D
It's Le Mans lite. The big guns test for Le Mans here.
i wasn't expecting that?
Bruno Mantovani - Force India
His Fisichella is pure class!
Neither was I, here I'm thinking it will be the annual Audi walkover
The XM Radio Accura?
Oh hell - thats a Honda... Brawn GP, Accura... Whats gone wrong?
awwwwwww :(
is that nick wirth, ex-f1 nick wirth?
Yes. He was on MWM a few weeks ago...
It's gonna blowww, a-whoa-whoa-o,
VOLCANO!!!
cool. didn't hear.
Well now you can sir!
fanx you!
is qualifying still on? I can't get the feed anymore.
It finished I think
all done.
Boooo. What did I miss?
Scott Dixon got pole for Radio something ahead of the Audis
the petrol car beat the diesels and some guy called klien lost it.
;)
grr
Scott Dixon! w00t! Sc00t!
Heh, nice recap.
RG what was your Donington question and can I use it?
Yeah sure, let me just find it and I'll give you it.
here's new the rbr video in case you haven't already seen it:
cheers dank!
Five Pints endorsed!
:D
i think this is for real:
http://www.mybiclighter.com/f1/index.php?lang=en
renault lighters?
ah look, my 2 least favourite things combined...
14:30 is a bit closer to the real time though
Just as garish as the damn car!
I have no reason to own a lighter, yet I always find myself wanting to buy them. I got one with a band logo on at the last gig I went to.
they make sense at a gig. but with the exception of singapore... f1?
oh.
Gavin, do ya want to know the question other here or should i pm you over the wiki?
According to Mark Hughes in Autosport Mark Stewart has made a film about Jim CLark to go with his two previous films on Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill. Hughes says that he has heard a rumour that BBC are going to show all three over the Easter weekend.
Mark Hughes also claimed that before he saw the premiere/press launch of the film he had never heard Jim Clark speak. How can you be a serious F1 journalist for as long as he has been and work for Autosport and never have seen any video clip with Jim Clark speaking?
PM on the wiki pls :-)
Autosport are now getting close to sidepodnouns. They had a picture of Ron Dennis in that white isolation tank thing at the Science museum with a caption asking if this was a sidepod cure for McLaren's problems. That is cheeky.
sidepodspace update
1st spacewalk on NASA TV now.
hehe :D
that cannot be true?
CHeers RG!
cool, any idea how long it will be?
page 132
I think they said they are 3 hours in so another 3-3.5 hours
Spotter Guide for Sebring
Man, it's hard to find out what time the race actually starts!
i don't the magazine. i may have to buy on saturday.
the gw/bw thing was cute, but at this rate they may as well call the magazine sidepodcast.
The currently seem to be showing everything but....
It starts 10:30 Eastern which is 14:30 UK and I assume 15:30 Danish
sidepodmag?
Who's thinking there could be a idea behind this?
ALMS schedule
http://www.americanlemans.com/index_schedule.php
Race starts 10:35 Eastern
thanking you muchly.
Insane as it sounds for a small part of the orbit there is no video coverage. Give it 5 minutes and it will be back
haymarket
Now the Red Bulletin is no more there is a gap in the market....
Thanks Steven!
could you imagine explaining the idea to bernie...
we have this podcas...
there's this thing called the intern...
it plays on your ipo...
you know what a walkman is...?
think of it as a vinyl record, where people talk about f1, but in your pocket...
I think we'd have trouble explaining what f1 is to him, let alone a podcast
He's more the Edison wax cylinder age isn't he?
Insert the word money into each one of those sentences and he'll be like putty in your hand.
:D
:D
Le Seb Ring quali times (.pdf like Brawn)
Klien's car went 0.1 seconds faster than Franck's.
http://www.americanlemans.com/events/current/results/Qualifying%20ALMS%20Sebring.pdf
YES!
Oops, obviously the wrong place to say that, I'll go outside.
in le seb's hands.
It doesn't make any difference over a 12 hour race. The interesting thing is both cars did very few laps. 2 for one and 3 for the other. I guess they wanted the bare minimum running so they are both capable of being faster.
I don't see too much chatter about Williams' awesome lap time at Jerez today. Incredible.
I was thinking about my quali expectations this morning on the way to work (NZL time, remember) and didn't have the Williams anywhere near the top.
Hmmm...
I think everyone is stunned. According to Clive that time was set on a three lap run so it is likely a quali simulation.
Is there any live streaming from the ALMS practice session?
It finished ages ago.
Another thought on this insane new way of choosing a champion. Assume the tech regs stay constant and this year's cars are legal for next season. Also assume that a team can do what Brawn did this year and deliver a car that is quick out of the box. Surely what they should do is not launch a new car at the start of the season but let all the teams who do fight over the wins. Then launch a car 6 or 8 races in with several months more development in it and clean up the end of season races.
yeah, but brawn had some pre-season testing. could they do that with none?
It has been done with just a shake down or two before. Bear in mind all a team needs is a few GP2 drivers to put some miles on it. I think there is no limit on the number of young drivers a team can test. Add in a lot of straight line testing and a few demos. Should be enough.
don't ask me what the yellow micra is about, but the sun sets on albert park:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/qidili/3337210139/in/set-72157614965660004/
wonder how dark it will actually be come the end of the race?
did i misread something, cause i thought that was only after the season ends?
straight line testing is limited too, but i guess 8 would be enough mid season.
the risk is, you'd look like a wally until the summer, and then if it failed, you'd look like a wally until winter. it's a risk, but you're right the option is there.
you could say str did it last year in fact, and it worked a treat.
I thought young drivers could test in season. This is ridiculous. How can the rules be changed so often even people like us who spend hours on this every day don't have a ******** clue what is going on?
one second....
wmsc descisions:
"Teams will be allowed to carry out three one day young driver training tests between the end of the last event of the Championship and 31 December of the same year. Drivers are eligible only if they have not competed in more than two F1 World Championship Events in the preceding 24 months or tested a Formula One car on more than four days in the same 24 month period."
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/03/17/fia-world-motor-sport-council-decisions/
sorry, just had to make sure i wasn't talking out of my bernie :)
I must listen to f1minute
I must listen to f1minute
I must listen to f1minute
I must listen to f1minute
I must listen to f1minute
Don't you mean out of your Nick Fry?
isn't not the listening that's the problem, it's the blooming remembering!
Hehe, I don't think I said it in the show, he's just trying to score some brownie points :)
never!
actually, the f1minute search engine was the quickest way to find it and link to it.
How am I meant to remember stuff you haven't told me?
or him :)
Testing out IE8...
Hmmm... not bad, not bad at all...
doohickey?
Leave right now!
ie8 is actually not he worst thing in the world.
Yep. All is well at the moment - everything is working as expected, even the pending sign (which came up as I was typing this).
Ronnie Corbett on Graham Norton said he bumped into Bernie last week. He had never met him before but said Bernie was really sweet. SWEET?
v.good to know, thanks you.
Indeed, it isn't. It's just a bit irritating that you have to install their Windows Search just to get the predictive functionality in the address bar.
I'm surprised you haven't been able to test it yourself, though - have you?
Really? I hear it's still super slow...
I abandoned Chrome and went back to FF3. Me dad's a Safari fanboy but I can't get used to that one!
I used IE7 the other day and I can't for the life of me think why you would choose IE over any other browser???
It's faster than previous IEs. And so far, it seems to be on a par with FF3. So far.
I did that too, when i uninstalled Chrome it said "Are you sure you want to uninstall google chrome? (Was it something we said?)"
took a quite gander at it a month or so ago, but that was beta2 i think. i have a mac :)
Oops, what's this?
here's the thing. doohickey was build using standards compliant code, and testing against ff3 and safari3. it appears to run on ie8 without any specific fudging or effort.
to me, that makes it not the worst thing in the world.
what.did.you.do?
:)
Ha! :D
Heads up panellists, here's this week's research question:
Inspired by Bruno Senna's switch from GP2 to DTM, I'd like you guys to think of the strangest series swap for an F1 driver.
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your wiki's!
high five :D
I.have.no.idea. :P
To be honest, I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Just the usual doohickey stuff I'd do on FF3.
Where's the Woodwiss-a-tron these days? Did we scare him off???
Come back Scott, all is forgiven!!! :-D
no worries. i'll look at it at some point :)
Something tells me the term "World Series by Renault" will pop up... :D
last heard, his laptop died. did it never come back?
That is quite the nickname!
I dunno. He's commented on Christine's Facebook page though.
If I can get the doohickey working on the iPod touch then surely he must be able to communicate with us?
hehe. umm, can we ask him on FB?
Hmmm... It doesn't seem to be anything major as of the moment. But seeing as that I haven't tested all the functionalities yet, it may be in one of those I haven't tested yet.
Functionalities - that's such an IT guy's term...
I would see if he's on xbox libe but it's gone down... good old microsoft ;)
*live, even.
Maybe they shut it down to increase bandwidth for IE8 Launch Day? :P
Done. Woodwiss has been bleated at by the 'goat!
his laptop's dead and xbox live went down. someone's trying to tell him something.
Wouldn't put it past them!
Yes - time to sell his xbox and save up for Windows 7! :P
Any comments? I have 10 questions in total so there are a few spare if this one is a bit Honda...?
I had 9 and used 8. Mr Roy said always good to have a few spare in case it goes over rather quickly.
Hmmm...
Jacques Villeneuve; from F1 to a series of awful songs that about 50 people bought.
51.
I'd save it to the panel mate ;)
Don't talk silly :D
Oi - save it for sunday!
Christine, knock a point off him!
I should learn to keep my mouth shut sometimes :(
Welcome to my world
sounds to me like you just volunteered for the panel...
Bertrand Gachot from F1 to The Prisoner
Dude!!! Research question for Sunday!!!
Lets face it, no ones listening
I can do a lot better than that by Sunday
this is fun. how many reserve questions you have?
:-(
NASA just said that the astronauts after several attempts managed to fix their exercise bike. These guys are supposed to be building and operating a space station and they can't fix an exercise bike?
Now NASA are stealing sidepodcast ideas.
http://mission-madness.nasa.gov/mm/bracket.html
:)
How are you supposed to rate them by looks? You can't rate a mission by looks.
Oh great, another Cup where I get the wrong idea...
How can they have Apollo 13 on that list and not Apollo 15? Imagine if 13 wins. NASA are going to have to put out press releases saying the most popular mission in its history was one that was a complete screw up and achieved nothing but they didn't put the mission that found the genesis rock on the list. I wonder if Bernie is a NASA consultant.
Apollo 13 was their greatest triumph in my book ... there's no way those astronauts should have survived that!
:D
:D
If their quality control had been any good there would not have been a problem. If their designs had been properly done they would not have had a different CO2 scrubber in the command module to the LEM. Typical civil service unlimited budget thinking. We will have one round CO2 scrubber and one square.
Well they can't really take it back to Argos can they?
Looking at the draw I predict the final will be Apollo 11 the first men on the moon vs Apollo 13 the disaster recovery mission.
caption compo time from ollie:
http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/03/19/caption-contest-82/
Don't Argos do call outs?
Greetings from a rather busy Milton Keynes.
Just thought the good people who visit the site might like to know the clever people who created our Webber And Vettel Rip Through The Rule Book film have only gone and outdone themselves again.
Entitled Dreamsphere: A Racing Car Comes To Life, it tells - or rather Sebastian Vettel tells - the story of the RB5 from Factory to track.
Check it out at www.redbullracing and do let us know what you think at feedback@redbullf1.com
That's a bit unfair - there's like a million parts in the thing!
The point is they did stuff they weren't supposed to do to get the guys home. The CO2-scrubber thing was because two different companies made the CSM and the LEM - hardly NASA's fault???
Regardless of the screw-ups, it was very impressive with the odds being 3/5th's of Gonda Success of them returning that they got them home...
david, it's 11pm!
Unless F1 do nightshifts?
There's got to be a joke about a late posting and a can of Red Bull in there somewhere???
true. i am right though, it is 11 o'clock.
It's dispatch day...
No, it's midnight here!
We're way ahead of you - posted earlier on today - the video is awesome, so thanks for pointing it out :)
I'm in MK too :)
NASA gave them the specs and NASA was in charge of the project. A bunch of boy scouts would not have made a mistake like that.
fair enough then what's the checklist...
1) pack x2 engines, check
2) pack x2 chassis, check
3) comment on sidepodcast...
This is true, but the ingenuity of the ground engineers in coming up with a solution was nothing short of genius. Oh, and they used gaffer tape too :)
i can't believe a team capable of creating such a fab piece of cutting edge video, still need feedback via email.
however, it's that good that i don't mind, and i shall do so.
They did a good job of disaster recovery but the thing was a massive failure.
Fine. If you think that you could have got a man to the moon in less than 8 years AND had to find all the smart people AND had to make the astronauts AND get all the technology invented and working any better than NASA then be my guest. I guess that makes the Russians worse than a cubs troupe then?
Contrast that with F1's development in the 60's - basically the cars were the same, save for very crude wings and slightly better tyres. Hardly on a par with the 'boy scouts'!
They used the Force to bring them back :-D
Hehe. I still love Alan Sheperds quote, when asked what he was thinking of while strapped into his spacecraft waiting to become the first American in space - "that every component was made by the lowest bidder."
Five Pints of Awesome... that's what I think about it!
I'm off to buy more cans of your lovely sweet and sticky caffeine water to fund more of these videos!
Night all... well past my bedtime :-(
night squire.
night gavin :)
Anyone here got TOCA racing? Thoughts?
good evening my sidepodpals. i hope you're all well.
I used to have it and it was a good game but I could never make it run for any length of time. I spent more time trying to fix it than actually playing it. It is a running theme with Codemasters games. At the time I checked their forum and it was full of people with the same problem.
Hi Lou, how are you?
Good times. TOCA 2 and 3 on the playstation were brilliant games :)
very tired. i got back like 1/2 hour ago from our first performance of Les Mis. It's been a very stressful day with the second spot light lamp being broken and trying to find another in a matter of hours. plus i've been in high heels all day so my feet hurt. but other than that i'm very happy :D
You must invest in some flatter shoes!
The TOCA series is great fun. 2 is the best, a lot of people think that.
lol i didn;t have time to change them :( i do have flat shoes... but today was so hectic everytime i sat down to change them i was called to do something else. lol
anyone fancy giving me a very brief summery of what has happened today in the world of f1?
Thanks for the replies - TOCA 3 is ne of the new games at work, was trying it out today.
oh no never mind.... i'll check f1 minute
Nice highlights video from the beeb
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7925005.stm
Kovi went a lot faster in testing and almost matched Jenson's time. Kaz went half a second faster. Nothing else.
None that I know of that are re-usable and don't peel off the wallpaper :)
There is aerospace wallpaper?
we already have a voicemail from him, but here are some extended (and bold) 2009 predictions from dan b:
http://www.racingeagles.com/2009/03/the-impossible.html
apparently sebring night practice is now live on radio lemans. they have night practice after qually?
News to me
oh i'd forgotten about sebring. how did Franck do in qually?
i can't load the pc up at the moment to check. but the team just tweeted they are live.
Nearly as well as Klien
Right Here Right Now tbh.
*listens*
i've not been keeping up to date with anything related to Sebring this week... what happened to Klien?
Err, yeah. Though it's technically just a wall covering as it's not made of paper. [and the wall is called a bulkhead :D ]
Haven't bulkheads been made of paper?
1st Acura (Honda)
2nd McNish Audi
3rd Klien
4th Audi
5th Franck
Chapman tried that.
wha?
Thankyou - I knew I had read it somewhere recently. :)
Paper bulkheads.
thank you :)
Well, maybe in the past
Since Manchester 1985 they've been a bit more progreesive on combustibles in the cabin. Aluminium Honeycomb filled composites and plastics mostly, these days I think
Paper bulkhead painted with Aluminium paint and claimed it was metal.
did he model it on a trabant?
Live timing
http://www.sebringraceway.com/
Well, part of it would be ;)
aaaha, nice
Franck's car is fastest by a second and a half from McNish
Mr C, any joy with sourcing yourself some speed tape? :D
You do realise the web cam would never move again once stuck with it
It's powered by SPC Love
aww.
I don't think the scrutineers agreed though.
it starts at $66.00 per roll!!
They refused to believe it was fireproof
The story I heard from someone in the team was they extended the chassis by an inch and covered in in tin foil - looked exactly the same as the fireproof bulkhead they were meant to be using but weight significantly less.
:D
Franck now 4 seconds faster than anyone else.
I can't get on the Sebring site, must be popular.
It opened fine for me just before I posted that link.
Franck out Le Seb in
nope, still not opening. I'm back on NASA tv.
It is really slow at updating now so there must be a lot of traffic.
Le Seb just went 3 seconds faster than Franck in the same car.
What were you expecting, it's sticky aluminium that's good for 600mph!
:D
I'll see if I can find some 'end of the roll' cut offs ;)
ta :)
okay am off to sleep now. another busy day ahead of me tomorrow :( night x
G'night Lou
night lou
What happens at 601mph?
Night Lou
BANG.
Can I just say I hate 1986.
again? i thought you were enjoying it?
Enjoying Lotus performance. Not enjoying Lotus reliability. Today I had the fastest car for the firs half of the race then had an accident and was slooooooow. No re-fueling in 86 so my fastest lap was 2 seconds slower than my team mates.
McNish fastest. Franck's car 2nd
sounds familiar!
The risk of supersonic airflow over the wings of a subsonic aircraft negates the need to worry about the integrity of your speed tape
Well, almost
(B747 max speed is apparently 608mph)
Mach 1 at 36,000 ft is allegedly 654.6 mph
(761.2 mph at sea level & 15 degrees C)
another of christine's rather ace season preview podcasts is now up:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/03/20/f1-digest-2009-season-preview-the-teams/
just listened, really enjoyed, now must sleep. good night all ;)
Roughly 1100ft/s at mean sea level and atmospheric pressure. ;)
Aerospace Engineering degree history coming back to haunt me.
G'night Mr C
catch ya tomorrow.
Franck has just gone fastest
Night
Session over.
1st Franck
2nd McNish
According to Radio Le Mans Peugeot will take three cars to the Spa 1000 kms on the 9/10th May
I'm off to get some kip before my 5am start.
Night chaps and chapettes.
does anyone know why Peugeot aren't racing at Sebring? or are they and i've missed them?
They'd better be!
