Friday at last, and it is just one week until we will be discussing the goings on in Free Practice. I know many of you out there are about to pop with excitement (me too) but there's still plenty going on to keep as amused as we count down the hours.
- The testing times dropped rapidly yesterday, and although Nakajima edged out Heikki by the end of the day, the McLaren had at last managed to catch up with some of the faster times of the week. Does this mean they have fixed the problem? Or were they just running some last ditch efforts to try and improve their image before the season begins?
- Webber has added another voice to the points change, saying that it was an unneccessary decision but will probably lead more drivers to take risks for wins. Like most others, he understands the thinking behind the change but wouldn't have implemented it if he'd been in charge.
- We're watching Sebring closely, as neither Audi or Peugeot claimed pole position in qualifying, but Franck did post the fastest time in night practice. What do you mean this is an F1 website? Shh.
As per usual on a Friday, feel free to share your weekend plans, if you're up to anything exciting. We'll be, erm, watching Sebring, so expect some live commenting coming soon. It'll be good practice for next weekend. Until then, I'll see you in the comments.
Sounds like he's talking about Hamilton to me...
The lad doesn't need a reason to drive crazy, should be great to watch tho :D
I'm hoping the McLaren has truly been fixed. Hamilton '09!!!
I can't wait until until the best drivers who fight for wins take each other off the track and the win goes to someone who was just coasting around staying out of trouble.
You mean a bit like Kovy's win last year? Or Massa's belgium win?
:D
In Australia, we call that doing a Steven Bradbury. It's a winter olympics reference.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Bradbury
Something like that. Something like that, perhaps everyone will have KERS failure in Oz (they're only pretending they don't want to use it) and Sutil will trundle home in first.
Talking of KERS - was a very interesting talk last night. Particularly in terms of braking effects.
That guy sounds like an absolute Legend!
Thanks Jeremy!
Ah, I remember Bradbury. Should have thought of him the first time Bernie mentioned medals really.
Isn't it one of the best stories ever? I didn't know about his current motor racing efforts when I posted the link. What a nice tie in.
Morning everyone.
Hope it hasn't been as much of a waste of time for you as it was for me.
i've been up 10 minutes. i'm good but not that good :)
what happened?
Got up at 5am.
Got in the hire car at 5:30am *new Vauxhall Insignia - it's not bad actually*
Drove almost all the way up the M1...
Got a phone call from the office - meeting cancelled.
Drove home again.
I'm liking the Google picture today:

Hungry Caterpillar!
very hungry caterpillar!
:)
A Rock Opera was made of that book. :D
Youtubeylink
Autosport.com will be down from 23:30 this evening for four hours as they shift servers. Just in case anybody queries it later!
My daughter hates the Hungry Caterpillar - it bit her!
Those holes in the book are quite nasty if you've got little fingers.
Oh no! I loved that book!
Hamilton's view on the rule changes:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7954755.stm
This is my highlight:
"For the first time in recent years we have the teams, drivers, sponsors and fans all working together for the good of our sport - now we just need the governing bodies to listen to us and help us."
I thought he "had no opinion"
Not until his PR team had managed to make one for him.
Or it could be that he really does hate them, but he was waiting for what others had to say first. That way, it doesn't look like he was hitting out at something that wouldn't favor him, and so that there's less chance of any... "repercussions"... from Paris.
This man has the worst PR Manager on the entire planet! Even when he says something valid and with merit, he still gets criticized!
I think it's the first. Because he has been part of the McLaren family for so long, his media skills have been overly polished to the point where he comes across as a PR puppet. I almost fell off my seat when he said 's***' in that video from Radio 1.
Matt Bishop doing his job well then!
Oh, don't get me started on that guy!
ahh, go on. am guessing renault-gate and ralf-gate?
I'm not sure what you are referring to here?
i know about ralf-gate, but whats renault-gate?
Well Ralf and 'The Bish' (rubbish nickname ahoy) got on like a house-on-fire a few years ago in an interview I seem to recall.
renault-gate: it is alleged that matt bishop was the man who sent out the mclaren press release suggesting renault had many megabytes of mclaren data on a handfull floppy disks. despite the fact any fool knows you'd struggle to get more than one image on those things.
mclaren later redacted the statement. gimmie a sec, i'll dig out some references. the keyword is "alleged" mind you!
correct. f1 racing (which he then edited?) publish a two page essay describing how matt told ralf where to shove it.
crude.
Ah. I did have that in mind. What about 'ralf-gate'?
if you werent refering to ralf/renault-gate then what were you refering too?
okay, this is where i think the story broke:
"A leaked briefing memo from McLaren on the so-called 'Renault-gate' affair seen by The Times claims that Renault had more than 780 individual drawings..."
"Phil Mackereth, the former McLaren engineer who joined Renault in March 2006, had taken with him several old-style floppy disks containing McLaren technical drawings."
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article2926221.ece
you can get maybe one or two drawings on a floppy disks (if there really small)! it's rumoured matt b. was the man who hit "send" on that release.
A floppy what now?
heheheh :)
Completely unrelated....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7953777.stm
....i'm saying nothing....
the article was called: "A Grotesque Rictus of Disgruntlement". more details here:
http://www.formula1blog.com/2007/08/25/ralf-vs-bishop-paddock-world/
good question?
i have nothing against the guy, mind you. two mistakes in all those years is hardly worth hanging the guy over. gavin?
you offering?
she says shes been honest with all the people shes met, saying that she's told them she wants to get married in 3 months....that would scare the life out of most guys and make them run for the hills :P
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. You've just made Matt B look like an utter fool. :P
I wasn't keen on him as the editor of 'F1 Racing' and his mega-overuse of the word 'mega'.
Everything was mega. Even being mega was mega. Mega mega mega mega!
I'm not hanging the guy - I just think that F1 Racing was better when Hans Seeberg became editior.
agreed :)
Many were skeptical of Hans at first - didn't he come from... was it Nuts or one of the other tabloids? He's proven himself ever since. Methinks he was already a big F1 fan before he even came over. Perhaps Stuart would wish to shed more light on this? ;)
new names for singapore corners:
- sheares
- memorial
- singapore sling
no corners named after musicians that are named after food??
:(
linkage - http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/73798
Where's the '5 Pints of Awesome' Corner?
in turkey.
Ha! Will that be Turn 8's new name? One pint per apex! Mind you, if they take that seriously, the drivers won't make it past 1 lap, never mind the whole race! :P
A shame I didn't win, though. I thought I had a pretty cool name for Turn 10 - Merdeka, considering all the historical aura of the area around that turn. Singapore Sling is more appropriate for the Turn 6 kink - that's the best place on the track to get a slingshot! :)
Is turn 10 where Kimi crashed? If so, highly appropriate to name the corner after an alcoholic drink! :-)
Not sure I've ever said this on here before but: omg!
The Preview Quotes are starting to appear :)
did they not before :/
You've seen some already?
I cant remember really, if its the same thing we're talking about i vaugely remembering seeing them, but dont use the preview button very often, so i may be wrong....but i thinks i've seen them....
Ah, no, I'm talking about Australia preview quotes.
Eg: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73803
haha, thats funnny, totally barking up the wrong tree!!! thats funny
w00t!
May I have this baby animal instead?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7951331.stm
Nellie the elephant pack her trunk and said goodbye to the circus, off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump....
you're not having one.
Well, it won't suffer with sunburn if it lives in the UK...
Yes, exactly, see, it's a completely selfless act.
No-one allergic to peanuts?
However - think of the size of poop-scoop you'd need!
oh for goodness sake, who's side are you on!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I may incriminate myself. :D
awww!! :D where would you keep it though?
Well, the bath will have an otter in it, so maybe the elephant could stay in the bathroom and they could keep each other company.
oh cool, that's sorted then ;) how big is your bathroom though? what happens when the baby elephant grows up?
I do not keep adult animals. It will have to go back.
actually aren't elephants loud? wouldn't that make podcasting difficult?
:D
Ah, I hadn't thought of that. Rats.
i think baby pandas are quiet, as are otters. So you can still have them ;)
Are we talking about pink baby elephants by any chance?
Apparently I am not allowed one.
Its certainly cute... but the whole living in the middle of africa might make it a tad difficult for you to persuade it to come back with you...
Having said that, when reading the article about it being at risk of dying from the sunshine, my initial response was "bring it over here then." too
Leave a trail of small buns?
:)
Afternoon all
For those who have been wondering where I've been, I've not had a chance to get to a computer until now (in the library), so don't worry, I haven't gone away and you haven't scared me away! :P
W00t!!! He's baaaack!
Dude, you've been away almost as long as Gonda!
We must have gone wrong somewhere ;) Nice to see you still love sidepodcast, I was getting scared when you weren't on the Panel ;)
Hi all. Guess who's only gone and pulled a muscle.
Which muscle?
One of them in the thigh, I don't really know the muscles if I'm honest.
Haven't seen anyone else mention this yet, but apparently FOTA claim that the new points system is invalid:
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=45299&PO=45299
Maybe we won't see the wins system implemented after all!
Oooh, they are fighting back.
Norbert Haug:
"After our test results, we must get used to the fact that in Melbourne we will be in the last third of the starting order,"
"Clearly we have to improve our technical package. This process needs time and it could be the start of the European season (before McLaren is competitive), perhaps even longer."
So much for the sandbagging theory then...
Hmmm. Seems clear cut.
How will the FIA wiggle out of it and get the rule applied?
haha, brilliant. Good stuff FOTA, hope this goes somewhere.
The winner take all is not bad, but I don't like the teams having this shoved down their throats. I favored a points systems of 12,8,6,5,4,3,2,1. But I can't recall being asked. Maybe too many beers on baord when the FIA called me.
anyone think the FIA were aware of this and will have to fall in line, but will be happy too now that the headlines have been generated?
That's disgraceful! Surely the FIA wouldn't stoop so low!
(Yes, I am being sarcastic) ;)
Thats exactly what I was thinking. Just enough time for the FIA to make a plea in the press before Melbourne...
Hey, Got a question for you all. Since there is no F1 in North America, should I go to the St. Pete GP, Indycar event. What I mean is....would you? ALMS will be there, but no Audi's nor Peugots.
Surely though the FIA can't implement yet another points system this late in the day (eg 12, 9, 7 etc). That's why the wins system is under scrutiny now.
If this 'appeal' by FOTA holds up, then the only thing that can happen is that we revert back to the original scoring system, right?
Yep. I'm starting to think this is just so that the FIA can get some headlines. Introduce a controvertial points system too late for the season, get loads of headlines, then change it back.
Unless the FIA were being sincere and will accept the 12 9 7... as a compromise? FOTA sound like they are still trying to sell the idea and may accept it.
They aren't coming out of it looking good though. If they accept it, then they're admitting they were wrong, and if they force it through, then they're stepping all over FOTA who seem to be being perfectly reasonable.
hehe, nice one FOTA. :)
Autosport says that Brawn are taking up last place in the pitlane because they are a new entrant and not taking over Honda.
Darn it, this means my Teams Preview was in the wrong order.
When was the last time they came out of anything lookin' good?
No, exactly, so why would they go ahead if they knew this in advance?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7955790.stm
BBC are running the FOTA challenge to the new points system too.
Autosport have picked it up too now.
This off season just keeps on throwing us curveballs.
I think we learnt last season it's never too late for drama in F1 :D
BBC BREAKING NEWS
Formula 1 looks set to scrap plans to introduce a new scoring system in 2009..
Just appears on BBC News 24!
lol FIA. Flipping morons.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7955790.stm
Now there's a webpage
*waits for more news*
the fia must've all gone home this time on a friday? if there's more news now, it's been pre-planned for a while, surely?
Autosport are saying the new system will be postponed till 2010 and confirmed by FIA! Oh my gosh, this is excellent.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73810
So... is it definitely off then?
renault pre-season podcast with holly samos:
http://www.ing-renaultf1.com/en/_2009/team/index.php#/team/mediadesk/podcasts/4178/
Still be getting the pointless system in 2010, so nothing really massive to brag on about.
"The ‘winner takes all’ proposal made by the commercial rights holder (who had been told that the teams were in favour) was then approved."
From the FIA statement....
Seriously...whoever told him that must have good convincing skills!
Haha this would be Formula One without the annual mis-interpretation of the rules
Whats to say they won't look at things after the season to compromise?
I meant wouldn't :P
Sorry, I should say TRY to compromise.
It's still coming 2010 though, so it's not a big cause for celebration.
Most likely its the FIA.
from the beeb:
"following Friday's protest from F1's teams, the FIA says it is prepared to defer the new system until 2010."
fia statement in full:
On 17 March, the FIA World Motor Sport Council unanimously rejected FOTA’s proposed amendment to the points system for the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. The ‘winner takes all’ proposal made by the commercial rights holder (who had been told that the teams were in favour) was then approved.
If, for any reason, the Formula One teams do not now agree with the new system, its implementation will be deferred until 2010.
http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/f1releases/2009/Pages/f1_points.aspx
naah, it's just one big marketing ruse. it'll give people something (else) to talk about next weekend, but there's nothing to say the FIA won't change their minds before 2010.
Great.
So we still get it as they have passed it - but they only can't implement it this year as the teams don't like it.
Woo.... hoo....
The FIA once again making itself look like a joke.
Good news that we'll have a champion decided properly this year though. :)
They'll find someway to mess it up
they really haven't. they've pushed the blame right onto bernie.
Cmon guys don't be so negative. :(
It's my way ;)
i'm not. but then i wasn't when the "wins" system was announced. i said it was a marketing exercise then and i still say it is now.
the fia are happy, bernie's happy, fans are happy. even the teams look like they've achieved something (although they really haven't).
it's all good.
Still getting the stupid system
WMSC only passed as they though the teams were behind it - strangely ignoring the fact that the FOTA has their own preposal.
It's only been brought in as the FIA *and FOM it seems* believe that the wrong person won the championship last year.
not we aren't and not we never will.
But the FIA put the rule in place, despite the fact their own rules said they couldn't?
How could they have not known the teams weren't in favour?
Even if it was done on purpose, it still makes them look like they don't know what they're doing...
disagree. it was brought in to create headlines. job done.
now it's being reversed to create more headlines.
I've seen some bad grammar ;)
I don't know, we're probably as likely to get it as the FOTA proposal
and they knew that all along.
of course they knew.
naah, not really. they've passed the buck onto the teams already.
oops!
depends how the politics pans out during the season. if bernie divides and conquers as he plans too, there will likely be no change at all.
Eh? Are you saying the FIA were trying to make FOTA look good? Or am I missing something...
People for some reason choose to take anything he says or does as a basis to criticise him. Had any other driver made those comments people would be saying that it was good to see another driver speak out. Instead because it is Hamilton he can't be praised without being kicked as well.
Give the guy a break.
no.
fia have said it was bernie's idea and then blamed the teams for giving him false info. we know that's likely not true, but what will be reported is what's in the press release.
It could hold the score board in its trunk. It can't make a noise and do that at the same time
I hope Max has over-stepped his authority and loses this.
What a mess :(
They can if they get unanimity.
nah. think of it as a system restore for formula 1. they're just gonna turn the clock back a couple of days and we'll carry on like nothing happened.
If this was all done to generate headlines, then is has just made the sport look like it is run by indecisive idiots.
but do they even care? and will anyone remember by monday?
But the FIA can't come out of this looking good?
From a casual fans pov:
-FIA introduce new championship winning rule thought up by Bernie that few people like.
-FOTA say FIA made a mistake and bring back the old system that most people like.
-FIA then blame everyone but themselves for getting their own rules wrong.
I agree with you that the FIA probably set this up to get people talking about F1, but it still makes them look like fools?
Great news. I wonder what Max's next stupid move will be.
It strikes me as strange that most rules don't have to be passed by teams too, atleast by a majority?!
It doesn't look like they do care, but they probably should. It's just another piece of evidence in the 'FIA are incompetent' file.
Hopefully one driver will rack up a lot of wins this season and that will convince Bernie and Max of the folly of their thinking.
True. All this messing about is just a bit....frustrating, lol. It'll be interesting to see how things play out.
its almost like they want that to happen...in the last 2 years, its been teh final race thats decided the title. 2007 1 point seperated 3 drivers and in 2008 it seperated 2. i dont tihnk its ever been that close!
Especially if it's Lewis.
Of course it is possible that the wins system was only put out to take attention away from the 30 million budget cap. When it comes time to do something with that they can claim that there was nowhere near as much criticism of that as the winner takes all system therfore it must not be unpopular.
I hope
I just hope he gets the most points and the most wins, just to see the look on Bernies face.
actually, i would quite like a ferrari to get the most wins, but lewis to get hte most points :P
In the last hour, this article appeared on the official F1 website:
http://www.formula1.com/news/features/2009/3/9035.html
Quote: "For the first time in Formula One history, the drivers’ title will be decided on wins alone, with points used only to settle the lesser placings".
It's odd that they should publish that now given the uncertainty over the scoring system.
how annoyed would you be if you'd just finished that article and then had to take it down
The official F1 site is usually way behind everyone else anyway.
If that happens you can guarantee we will have a wins sstem in 2010
At least all this shows (unless they planned to pull the idea all along) that the teams, media and fans have some kind of influence over the FIA.
I'm scared to see GMM, they might still be covering the points change from 10-6-4-3-2-1 to 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1
id like the ferrari to get the most wins but have rubbish reliability. that would be good
That's because they hand pick the news items and spin them in a way that makes the FIA sound good...
Anyway, it looks like the wins idea will be scrapped. Just as I was getting used to the idea as well...
Ah, that could very well be true.
Good news!
David Croft is going to be on Fighting Talk tomorrow. Wonder why?
There have been more conspiracy theories posted today than when the fake moon landing people and the Area 51 people accidentally double booked the same convention hall. ;)
it is, agreed. it's also a colossal waste of time.
it does create good debate mind you.
Cool, that should be worth a listen.
ace!
I knew I'd end up in the modqueue for meontining Fighting Talk
:D
:D
lol, also true. Wise words Mr. C :P
Why is everything I say ending up in the mod queue?
no idea, i fix. have you been introduced to doohickey btw?
less moderation, more chat. a better conversation mix :)
Because you can't be trusted
Intrestingly, thats what I was using.
bugger :(
rg can't be trusted to charge a mobile phone. but we do trust him to comment :)
FOM not the only ones sprucing up their graphics.
http://www.fia.com/en-GB/sport/championships/f1/australia08/Pages/circuit.aspx
Haha oops, sorry for laughing RG
i literally just dropiod:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/melbourne-circuit-map-png
Don't worry, I laughed :)
by the way. why is there a giant french fancy in the drop??
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/1237574700402
I was link through as an 'interactive' map.
It's not interactive at all... other than looking and reading...
:)
it is. try the on/off buttons.
Someone was hungry? .. gosh I'll giggle at anything tonight doh!
Does nothing for me. Although it could be that flash is broken on this machine.
btw the webcast of the KERS talk is available now http://tv.theiet.org/technology/transport/1304.cfm
the buttons turn off various bits of data, although it's a master of understatement.
i'll dropio an "off" piccy.
yeah, we're waiting for flibster to make it mac friendly.
That's stretching the concept of 'interactive' a little far
I thought you were talking about Franck before I saw the picture...
It was put up last week I think - I'm having great problems ripping the stream
hahaha
:D
Excellent :D
interactive map (off):
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/interactive-melbourne-map-off-png
Turning on and off the racing line? Really?
Loaded it on a different machine and can't really see the racing line unless I zoom in on the page so the circuit takes up all of my 24" monitor!
Turning on and off the fencing?
Pushing the boundaries of flash there chaps.
:D
Who are they trying to kid?
all about passing the blame.
The buck has to stop somewhere, and I'm pretty sure FOTA won't be too happy with taking the blame. They have to see this as their first real victory over the FIA.
how is it a victory though? okay, i guess they stopped a dumb ruling, but their proposal wasn't accepted either.
thus far the only thing that fota have achieved thus far, is allowing renault a freebie engine upgrade, and letting us hear more radio traffic during the race.
they have no idea what they're up against, no clue at all.
the keywords there were "thus" and "far" btw. not sure i made that clear enough ;)
Maybe less a victory, more a..... stalemate in their favour? Their influence has changed an FIA decision so it's something.
true. we'll have to see what happens at the next meeting and the one after that.
5livef1 just mentioned force india have a podcast coming out on monday:
http://twitter.com/5LiveF1/statuses/1362106839
No more... I don't have enough time in the day!
pat symonds just said on the podcast, that the OWG put the equivalent of about a weeks worth of research into this years aero regulations.
yikes. i'd assumed it was much more.
ten minutes further into the podcast, that "week" dropped to just 4 days of research.
there's 15mins left to run on the show, am expecting to learn that the OWG didn't actually exist before the end!
4 days?! Quick research! Though they probably had a pretty good idea how to approach the issues before the OWG was even created.
Possibly the silliest idea I've come up with in a while, but in for a penny in for a pound!
http://betstobelgium.wordpress.com/
No wonder the cars look ugly.
On week is just so amateurish. In this week's Autosport they are now claiming an overall drop of 15% in total downforce. A bit away from the targetted 50%. Someone at the FIA has to start taking sorting out the technical regs seriously.
yeah, that's basically what he's saying. mostly they appeared to debunk myths prove some assumptions.
also, presumably it didn't all happen during the same week? just guessing though.
They went for a coffee and drew the regs on a napkin.
possibly the best idea i ever did hear!
Are you seriously going to bet real money on the outcome of Melbourne. I still haven't Skyped a prediction because I haven't a clue. I certainly wouldn't bet until the second race when I had at least some idea what was going on.
Best of luck with the plan though.
Yeah I agree. It seems every time theres a reg change with regards to aero the FIA come out with a big headline figure like 50% dforce reduction. Then at the first race the new regs are implemented at they've recovered most of the downforce.
I skimped on buying a proper domain name as it will probably be all over by next weekend!
The risk to reward ratio will be all the more higher though? Nobody really knows going into Melbourne what will happen so the odds are all over the shop at the moment.
Its a great idea :) I certainly look forward to following your blog!
I was told today that if you put 20 pounds on Trulli to win, you could come out with about 700 or 800 pounds, if you win all you need on the first race, is that the end of the blog?
he could upgrade to the paddock club :)
Hmmm. I normally make money from the 1st race of the year.
Last year I got the top 3 and won, well...
This year though, I haven't got a ******* clue!
Oh well, will come up with something.
You picked the top 3 of Hamilton, Heidfeld and Rosberg!?!! I need to buy you a drink, thats amazing!!!
Indeed! Flibster puts Mystic Meg to shame!
More to the point have you done your predictions for the show?
In the prediction league I do, I had Raikkonen, Hamilton and Rosberg. No one got the top 3 at all right.
We need to get to grips with the ALMS. I thought last night's session was the last but according to Autosport they have sneaked in another session.
Audi finished 1-2 with McNish's car in front followed by Franck's car in 3rd and deFerran's Acura(Honda) in 4th. Klien's car doesn't even get a mention in the article but I assume it was 5th.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73808
how much practice do they need??
Klien needs a lot.
lots....apparently...

Its on Motors Tv on sky aswell. theyre going to have a season preview at 1, race at 2.
aaah, i am jealous of people who have Motors TV, i would like it quite alot. its my type of channel. 24-7 racing :D
I went with gut feeling last year - year before I actually did some research and made an educated guess. Got the race winner quite hapilly
Just checked the wiki and discovered that no-one has signed up to be a panellist for Sunday's sidepodpanel. I know we will get enough people. If you want to be on the panel sign up at http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Next+Week's+Panellists
It's good alright. But they've lost a lot of stuff like Le Mans, BTCC and Aussie V8's I think. Theres an awful lot of filler unfortunately.
It's alright. A lot of the programs are french and then badly dubbed. :D
yer, im happy with the club motorsport stuff to be honest. le mans i would like though, caught the first half hour on some sort of channel on freeview last year, and then it cut out. was so annoyed. had to settle for Radio Le Mans to tell me everything!
The drunken fighting has started early tonight. Not even 10pm yet.
However, it's currently a screaming catfight. They look to be all of 15 or 16 years old...
I'm sure I didn't so anything like this when I was their age. *many years ago*
you shoulda joined in the live commenting, we had streaming video through most of the race, i think.
What is wrong with the F1 media?
Every news site covering Max's latest farce are running headlines like "FIA willing to postpone new rule" or "FIA happy to defer new rule".
The FIA is not remotely happy. They are being forced into this because they broke their own rules. Is the price of a press pass that everything gets a spin that avoids offending Max?
Have just posted F1 Minute with "FIA Back Down Over Championship Changes"
I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Bernie right now either.
By the way - this weeks Private Eye has their take on Max's appearance at the Parliamentary Committee last week. I won't repeat it here as the Eye has better lawyers than Christine and me ;)
There is nothing better than an ice cold lemonade, a large blue fillet steak, triple cooked chips, onion rings and steamed veg.
I know it's late, bit it's beautifiul. :D
Oh my god do I hate you right now ;)
Just gonna try and get my jaw off my laptop after it dropped reading how gorgeous that sounds.
:D
Triple cooked chips - the one thing that Heston Blumenthal does that I can do easily in the kitchen. Absolutely perfect.
Why is it blue?
Triple cooked chips!? What are they?!
chips cooked three times, the clue is in the name ;)
It's almost raw, it may have been near a source of heat for maybe 30 seconds
"Cooked very quickly; the outside is seared, but the inside is usually cool and barely cooked"
I prefer mine a bit rosy on the inside... and warm :D
Or, my favourite
"steak so rare, a good vet could bring it back to life!"
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/heston_blumenthal/article631377.ece
Almost mooing. ;)
Otherwise knows as Aussie style
Cut it's horns off, shave it, wipe it's nose and bum and stick it on my plate.
:D
I completely forgot to mention my personal Sidepodspace update: Saw the ISS and Shuttle twice this evening :D
While we're on updates I have some SidepodSpeedtape for Mr C
Though Lord only knows what he'll use it for :D
Spacesuit for panda?
Could be :)
Now I've got a + in my name
The best sighting for a while is 7:20 pm tomorrow night. Even in my part of the far north it is visible for 5 minutes.
Details here http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/index.html
Did we cover the teddies in space project?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cambridgeshire/content/image_galleries/teddy_space_gallery.shtml
Yes
Bah. Getting old
I've just been doing some window shopping for a new lens (Lou will like this one as it's only £198) and was tickled to see this:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/picture-2-png
Have another flying bear story
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa1pIO4_lUY
I love Friday internet delivery promises
Christine, don't click!
Ok.
Gone now, I had DD & old skool doohickey open simultaneously before so wonder if that's why
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The bear was fine and it is not even a panda.
LOL!
I'm in pain - can't breathe..
Are you not just slightly curious?
It looks a lot worse though, plus we only have their word for it. The bear obviously unavailable for comment.
After that face plant?
A little. Sometimes I do as I'm told though :)
Exactly my point. This is much funnier (although LPG disagrees):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHXj3qgFs_k
While we're doing trampolines, this is quite well done
Elephant Jumping On Trampoline
And it's safe for Christine
Wow, so much power. What can I do with it I wonder? (evil grin) - me please let me know if you have any suggestions.
ROFL, LMFAO and other such abbreviations
That's going on my phone, NOW!
Are you guys trying to kill me?
Was the elephant trying to get a job on Blue Peter?
LPG has just named all the trampolining moves...
Is that a challenge?
More here: http://www.youtube.com/user/failblog
Here's a cure one for christine

OK. How bout this. A flying animal that doesn't fall and stays concious
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REl64B2oB1U
Cute even....
Ah, that one never gets boring. :)
And funny
Good old parabolic flights. :D
Right, I think it's time to get some practice in for tomorrow's rugby watching in O'Neils - Guinness time!
The Diet Coke and Mentos experiment on a parabolic flight is quite interesting too
Hey everyone :D am back from yet another performance of the wonderful musical les mis, sadly tomorrow is the last night. However tonight was amazing, we got a standing ovation and everything :)
oh and i gather i missed a bit of unimportant news ;) - all i can say is, thank god ;)
Hi Lou. :)
hey Andy, how are you this evening?
Fine thank you. Been window shopping for lenses - new Nikon 35mm DX. A bit more reasonable than those tilt/shift lenses we were looking at.
Hi guys, just got in from the pub,and the news I've missed seems to be good. Gimme the details someone, please.
And to follow up my steak:
Vanilla Haagen Dazs straight from the tub and a double espresso macchiato. :D
Girlfriend is still away then...
Evening Lou and Bootneck.
FIA have moved the changes to the poitns back to 2010 as they voted on it too late and didn't have all the teams support to bring it in early.
ooooooo, i love lens shopping :)
Champion will be decided by points, not wins.
U-turn! U-turn!
Yup. Another week of peace, quite and decent eating. :D
There'll be a lot of washing up soon or a bin full of convenience food packaging :D
QUIET even... My typing is atrocious. :D
FOTA said "Oi! FIA! No!".
They argued that the scoring change was too late to be implemented for 2009 and the FIA realised they had broken their own rules. So points stay as they were until 2010.
Any engines in the bath this week?
haha... Paper plates - no convenience food though - cook it all myself.
Nope. All back together and awaiting a new gearbox before it goes in the car. I have nothign to do with that bit. I'm just waiting to pick up my new car tomorrow now.
:D that makes me happy. stupid FIA.
The '2nd drivers' might have a thing or two to say about that one
It'll be like a Schuey in every team
How come Christine doesn't own this url. It even has pandas half way down the page.
http://www.cuteoverload.com/page/2/
I'm trying to decide if I should wait to replace mine now if the government are possibly offering cash incentives to remove old bangers from the roads
When I started driving, my 1st car was 23 years old!
I think two were enough... ;)
One, was enough!
Poor dog... Look at Customize your puppeh...
Pandas are cute though. :)
Mine was a 1973 VW Beetle...
I started driving in 1995
First car I owned was a 1971 Lotus Elan. That was when was 16, but it was a wreck and I spent 7 years rebuilding it.
Am lovin' the hamster in "Secrets of Pocket Pet Photo Shoots"
Ah, but then what would Sniff Petrol do?
My car is a 1972 Beetle :)
1990: bought an automatic '77 mini (brown) for £400
Had several oddities stolen from it including, wipers, battery (twice), wing mirrors and front number plate
'Tis also why I no longer live in Brixton
Brilliant,Brilliant,Brilliant. There is a god. and he sides with the people that make this sport what it is, the teams, the drivers, and all the back room staff that make it happen. Not the monkeys with fissog's on the TV and in the media all
the time.
All we need now is for FOTA to stay together and maybe just maybe..............
I had a '71 camper that I bought for Glastonburys
What a bus!
Hopefully this issue has not been settled, but anyone care to guess how many glasses of wine it will take before Christine starts seeing "Pink Elephants" before her eyes?
My 1st was a '63' Morris minor and like a sad puppy I painted it starskey and hutch colours. then I saw the light after 9 months and talked my dad into helping me buy a '61' Sunbeam Alpine, whatta car. Red n Black with a hard top
Lovely cars. My beetle was great - until my mum reversed it at quite a high speed into a concrete post. Complete write off. :(
Love the mini - hate the Auto bit.
*drool* Really can't afford one. Last time I did Glasto a group of 4 of us clubbed together and bought a really crappy Transit. Was a great idea. Just crashed in the back of it then drove it home and scrapped it. £300 well spent.
I almost had a mk3 Cortina (orange) as my first. My brother in law never got it working so that plan was abandoned
The secret is to bring a one-man tent also and secretly place a chemical toilet inside for your group's use. A lifesaver!
Right 3 things:
1. Skype aint workin for me at the mo, so Ive sent my GP predicitons via email.
2. Steven Roy (if you're out there) - finished my runs. Perfect setup and converted to dry.
3. Just passed my Theory test. Phew!
Congrats
What did ya get?
well done :D
Do not smile, Lou! WE are going to be the poor sucker pilots who have to fly the damn elephant back to Africa....
Or have not not studied the max. weight payload of the Osprey for the range needed to get to Africa and compared it to the weight of an adult elephant?
If you agree to fly the elephant to Africa, Lou, I sure hope you can swim...
I HAVE A PLAN!!
Bernie has some spare room on his FOM plane, just divert it a bit!
Multiple choice questions: 49
Hazard Perception: 64
Though I think the latter section is a joke, the trick is just to click everything Repeatedly, and hope you dont max out your clicks :P
Thanks & well done on the theory test.
Yep, sounds about right
Well done :)
we have them, thanks yoooou ;)
go
Right time for bed said Zeb. I'm guessing and only guessing, there's not many kids between you guys on here this time of night, I've gotta go, visiting my mum tomorrow her mum tomorrow afternoon then it 's the wife's day with her/our offspring on sunday. At least Bernie got something right and made the 1st race the same day as the boat race..... whatever that is. see ya all on monday for the daily.
go w00t??
i meant "go you!"
Don't tell our visitors to go w00t! How rude.
night buddy.
It that an Owl speak profanity?
Thanks y'all :)
cya bootneck
:D
i'm never gonna live this down :(
Nope
I got you a small amount of speed tape btw
Prob a metre or 2
you are a legend!
Three blind mice walk into a pub. But they are all unaware of their surroundings, so to derive humour from it would be exploitative.
:D
Quick, dress up as a panda again. There, crisis over.
So I'm guessing I'm coming to the science musem then, unless you're parking at Heathrow again :)
Thank you Bill Bailey
once yes, twice no.
Never say never again
:D
I was watching my Part Troll DVD earlier, and by coincidence, its on tv now!!
The BBC News bit is my fav! :D
we likely are. and tubing to the museum. however, you are obliged to come.
Absolutely priceless
Wow. This may be a first. You're talking about a comedy moment I am aware of.
I most likely will.
It'd be far better for you to continue on the A4 to Osterley, park round the corner from the station, literally - for free - and tube the rest of the way
The man is a genius.
*faints*
:P
2nd only to Bill Hicks in my book
ahhh. okay. can do.
Jon's fallen in the water
ah.. care to explain then? ;)
How did that happen?
Live commenting Part Troll? :)
hahaha
I think it's the SPC equivalent of a quantum singularity
Words can't explain!

An Otter?
Pink Elephant?
This one is a bit better, plus dosent cut the good bit off at the end
Bill Hicks was a comedy visionary. Love his stuff.
Have I said how much I love 1986?
.........
no.
200 peeps on the listener map:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Listener+Map
He'd have had a field day with the Bush Jr years
Most effin' excellent
I missed the first hour. I am now watching it on youtube.
Most of the stuff he did could have just been recycled. ;)
Also find Richard Pryor really funny.
as it was your idea, i'm thinking we should send you on a gorman-esque adventure to meet everyone on the map. what you think?
The Bush Jr years?
That'll take a while
talking of gorman, did anyone watch Genius tonight?
I'm trying, I've done 3/200
No.4 got lost in the post :D
Sky+'ed
buuuugger :(
Bugger, I thought that was next week
hehehe.
iplayeriplayeriplayeriplayeriplayeriplayer
it was good.
i got tickets to go to the Christmas radio special, but was ill at the time. so annoyed now
Unfortunately yes
Rapidshare it is then
Or BBCi Player I s'pose
ehehehehheheheh :D that's brilliant!
It's already on iPlayer
I wouldn't know about rapidshare. ;)
Recommend Black Books, from the writer of Father Ted with Bill Bailey & Dylan Moran
Is this what your talking about?
yes
Now watching it.
Dave Gorman has gone mainstream.
Shame, I saw him when he was searching for Dave Gormans *Dave Gormen?*
Maybe Dank should have a wager on our chances of colliding again?
Steven: That's just silly. It vaildates Bernie's thinking completly as the driver who got teh most wins also got the most points by virture of the wins so no harm no foul.
I would love to see 17 differnet winners for 17 different races and both Ferrari's and Hamilton DNF at every single race under Bernie's proposed medal/most wins system. Do we then split the championship into 17 equals parts?
Impossbile - Yes. But Bernie has not thought what happens in his system under a possible tie, and if 2nd place does count under Bernie's system then why not get points for it?
and Tamsin Grieg - she was in The Archers and Green Wing
As previously mentioned, my neighbour is one the few who changed his name to Dave Gorman just for comedy effect
He made it into the book
Also love Green Wing
Stay away from me. You have a nice solid Ligier. I only have a Lotus with paper bulkheads.
Genius was great on the radio. Why do they have to spoil perfectly good radio shows by putting them on TV?
His name? So not one of the girls then ;)
I have the "I am not Dave Gorman Are you?" badge somewhere
Yes, me too.
I was hoping that it would make Bernie realise that his TV audience will disappear if one driver dominates. I know it is only 5 years since that happened but Bernie and Max can't remember that far back.
Just a quick 1 before I do crash, if any of you are coming up to london on 15th april for science museum tour. I work in central london and have access to free secure parking. please advise.
I really liked his independant travel across america show too
I went back and watched both series of that on 4OD
:D
Alzheimer's is a terrible...
What was I saying?
That was a good show.
It's funny, he seems to be losing his mind with regularity. When his Director hurt her back he lost it, when he did Googlewhack, he lost it again....
Why, oh why, can I never buy an online ticket for the national lottery after sundown when I've had an account for about 2 years?
In Australia [going back 7 years or so] they tried to outlaw 24hr gambling. There's a big issue there with 'poker machines' [like one-armed bandits] in rooms attached to pubs that are open 24hrs a day. It was deemed unfair to shift workers to close down at 6am as they wouldn't get the chance to flutter on the way home from work.
The compromise was to close between 4 and 6am, which was used to get the cleaners in to sweep up
if dank hadn't warned us:
http://www.autosport.com/
"We aim to have service restored by 05.00 GMT"
Is that SidePodTime?
Nothings changed on mine?! Except all teh pictures arent showing
This man has the worst PR Manager on the entire planet! {Comment #23}
To be fair, Anthony Hamilton has no experience prior to Lewis. He's also contending with the problem that the better-known you are, the more imposing you are to the powers that be and therefore the quieter you must be to avoid official opprobrium. Still, he could get the balance better.
Mind you, it does fit in very well with the tradition Dennis-era McLaren PR strategy, so maybe it is in Lewis' best interest after all...
Ok, the drunkenness outside has got weirder.
There is now a group of people all dressed as Elvis staggering down the middle of the road, singing Blue Suede Shoes...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/picture-2-png-2
PICS!
ta
Don't have a camera that has batteries in reach - it's funny as hell though
DRINK!
That was wierd. I clicked on the link on the desktop doohickey and a new window popped uo with the SPC logo on it saying click here. I clicked here and then I got the link in a different window.
They've changed song - Little less Conversation now.
At least one of them isn't a bad singer.
Is this 2011 aero rules for those within the budget cap?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/l-dg0-5644-3-jpeg
Me too
Not having fresh batteries?
Can you get them to sing this please?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpiIWMWWVco&feature=related
or this preferably...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf9d7rSf_Ks&feature=related
it does that when dropio can't process the pics fast enough. tends to sort itself out soon enough. odd though.
:D
its not easy being green - just ask the honda mechanics
Mr C: at the risk of bringing it up too soon, what about the SidePodTour to the Lotus factory? Possible dates, should we put it out there?
between spain and monaco is looking good. weekend of the 16th may maybe?
Sounds good
LOL at the comment: I remember my dad getting mad at me when I asked if Bert and Ernie was married
Random tangent....As of September this year i hope to be starting a Motorsport degree.
Practical modules include; marshalling, scrutineering, time keeping and other industry qualifications.
And many driving things too, as well as events management, crowd control etc etc. And they say universitys hard work?! :P
Link below if you want a look...
http://bucks.ac.uk/default.aspx?page=6643
Its a new course in development by the way...but i'm getting more info through the post in hte next couple of days so will keep you all posted...
Ok, who put this, as their location on the SPC listener's map. Do we have migratory birds or scientists with good internet connections.
I'm not going there for drinks!
Looks like fun! For a college degree that is. I was looking into a masters in motorsport in cranfield. Looks v. interesting.
cool, so what avenue are you hoping for on completion?
I think it is time I went to Uni.
I've always wanted to do either Motorsport engineering or business. but engineering courses are all computer based and business is the biggest subject ever. this is exactly what ive been searching for...
ace, thanks jon. v.interesting stuff.
that sir is a good question. i havent a clue really. so i figure, do what you enjoy
renault-gate: it is alleged that matt bishop was the man who sent out the mclaren press release suggesting renault had many megabytes of mclaren data on a handfull floppy disks. despite the fact any fool knows you’d struggle to get more than one image on those things. {Comment #31}
You can get 780 images on an old-style floppy - as long as the average file was below 1.846 KB. Considering that 11 disks were confirmed to be involved, that increases the maximum average file size to 20.46KB. That's plenty large enough for an average of 10 cm x 10 cm JPEG files at high compression rates.
The theory remained plausible even after Matt Bishop's exaggerations were removed from the equation.
blimey, you lot are keen. dank's trying something similar i believe.
Wise words
Thats cool. It seems to have a nice balance. And the scrutineering and marshalling aspect is something the course in Cranfield doesnt have.
you can get maybe one or two drawings on a floppy disks (if there really small)! it’s rumoured matt b. was the man who hit “send” on that release. {Comment #35}
If he didn't hit "send", then he still would have had management responsibility over whoever did. Being a head of department has that effect...
It seems a bit more practical based than other courses ive seen
So, he had the ability to hit send but was still using floppys?
Welcome to 1989
rubbish!
by way of example i took a screenshot of your comment, compressed it into jpeg format and the smallest i could make it, whilst remaining legible was 14KB.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/14k-comment-jpg-2
that's a single comment, and doesn't contain any details of something as intricate as car parts.
the only thing in question was "did the bish send that email". because the maths are very, very wrong.
:D
*EMAIL ATTACHMENT SIZE 1MB - ESTIMATE DOWNLOAD TIME - 30 MINUTES*
Yeah. I reckon thats a very important part. It was one of the main reasons I picked the college I go to, strikes a good balance between practical and classroom stuff. You leave college more rounded, or some blarney like that :p Best of luck with it!
not necessarily true. rumour has it he still worked for haymarket at the time and didn't officially take up the mclaren role until january.
think of it as a challenge.
Thanks
and on that bombshell, im going to bed. Night all
night jon.
Night
G'night Jon
Night Jon
I'd probably need a donate button, even with staff travel
new names for singapore corners:
- sheares
- memorial
- singapore sling {Comment #48}
Take it I didn't win, then :(
I would check who did, but Autosport won't load :( :(
Saying that, I'm trying to find a way into Tibet without joining an organised tour group. I should bring some SPC flyrers if I make it
'Pub closed due to economic circumstances'
WHAT?!
wha?
Swapping servers or something
(though prob just a pre-season party)
Is turn 10 where Kimi crashed? If so, highly appropriate to name the corner after an alcoholic drink! {Comment #52}
Yes indeed it is! The only corner on the F1 circuit named after an alcoholic beverage.
You could try what this guy is doing. He set out to go round the world without spending any money and relying on people on twitter to help him.
http://www.twitchhiker.com/
Apparently, ypu can't travel in Tibet unless you're with an organised tour group. I don't do those
The other word should have read 'flyers'
Did anyone get the season preview issue of Autosport? Not exactly riveting
i see. they have ipod's in tibet?
was going to purchase tomorrow. you suggest i save me cash?
Haven’t seen anyone else mention this yet, but apparently FOTA claim that the new points system is invalid: {Comment #87}
Technically all the modifications made this week are invalid, since they were done in breach of Appendix 5 of the Sporting Regulations. But who is the FIA to feel compelled to follow FIA regulations?
Fake chinese ones probably
I once saw a reproduction moped on my travels with a Hongda badge
I think it came out of the back door :D
:D
good point.
I was thinking of getting Autosport again, especially to fill the F1 Racing gap, maybe not now.
Cian, do you think RTE will try for the F1 again in the future?
mmm, maybe. they have like a paragraph for each team. Was expecting something more, maybe some techy bits or something. The DC column was quite good though.
Autosport says that Brawn are taking up last place in the pitlane because they are a new entrant and not taking over Honda. {Comment #102}
That was unexpected. In that case, what will Honda's executives look like when they discover that Brawn GP being a new entry means that they are still (at least in theory) liable for the penalty for letting a race entry lapse?
:D
Well now that it's been published here, the letter will be in the post Monday :(
Hey Joe ^^ I wouldnt think so. The main attraction for RTE was Jordan of course. Eddie always guaranteed them interviews and stuff. Any idea how much Setanta paid for the rights? Their coverage lacks a bit of polish, though Gary Anderson is fantastic. The guy knows what he's on about. Oh, and bring back Peter Collins!
What do you reckon?
I must apologise in advance.
In the remotest of possibilties that i even have the capacity to post here after sundown tomorrow. Ignore ALL that I say.
Am going to Covent Garden around 2pm to watch the rugby - England & then Ireland (g'wan lads) and then onto a friend's birthday drinks
Am thinking it could get quite messy
I don't thin so mate. F1 just isn't anywhere near big in Ireland. Jordan were of course a big part of it, and since their departure, coverage has declined. The coverage in the papers is shockingly bad. I wouldn't have clue how much Setanta paid, but seeing as they show practice (I think) they should certainly keep the coverage. F1 Digital from a few years ago was a good idea but it kinda flopped. Plus the BBCi stuff is the same anyway.
doohickey needs google goggles.
Or that iPhone Drunk Dial App
That should be the password :D
:D
Yeah thats true, just not a big enough audience. They'd be better off getting the WRC back. That'd please all the Cavan boys. I managed to convince the old man to get Setanta in when RTE lost the rights, expecting something like the ITV presentation, not even close though. But now that James Allen is gone, I'll be quite happy to watch it on BBC and get rid of Setanta!
They can if they get unanimity. {Comment #148}
If they're doing it within their own regulations, the Sporting Working Group has to approve the Sporting Regulations changes and the Technical Working Group has to approve the Technical Regulations. After that, the Formula One Commission (involving six teams, five race promoters, Bernie and Max) vote on the matter and it requires a majority to pass the measure.
The refusal of the FIA to do this shows its contempt for its own regulations, which is ultimately self-defeating for it.
Watch it online with an web proxy
You from Cavan eh? I'm in Mayo myself, though I don't consider myself to be from the wretched place. Peter Collins is from Mayo IIRC. Wonder where that David Kennedy muppet is from.
Didn't we always know that the FIA was only setting up these groups as lip service once they'd brainstormed the overtaking issue?
how annoyed would you be if you’d just finished that article and then had to take it down {Comment #165}
It could be worse. Someone at Yahoo! will be miffed when its portal does its usual trick of having an item with the "Championship decided on points" entry next Wednesday...
Alianora has written another great post on the FIA rule changes. Well worth a read. Although I strongly suggest you don't try and figure out how the FIA arrived at some of the decisions.
Hands up everyon who evey worried about holes in wing mirrors. Wierd
http://formula1home.com/forum/weblog_entry.php?e=691
haven't read the entry yet. but we mentioned this last year. is it something to do with situating pitot tubes in them?
*goes of to read now*
Im actually from Wicklow, but I know a few Cavan lads who are mad into rallying and their mark 2's. Steer from the rear and all that. Mayo's not all that bad is it?!
I think Kennedy's from Dublin. Remember going to see him driving the Jordan at Mondello in '99. My dad managed to sneak us into the pits and I'm ashamed to say I got his autograph. Was it Ensign or Shadow he drove for? Think it was Shadow.
Pitot tubes need to be located towards the front to avoid 'dirty air'
Doubt wing mirrors would work
joe, how comes you're not on the sidepodmap?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Listener+Map
any idea what other data recording equipment could be put in them? something in the back of my mind says a team was experimenting with this in early 2008.
Who are they trying to kid? {Comment #209}
Possibly because the FIA missed the point of the FOTA proposal, which was that FOTA wanted a better points system, not a replacement thereof...
I didn't even think of aero as an option. I don't remember ever seeing anything on this subject before.
I think Kennedy did indeed drive for Shadow. He also failed to qualify an embarrassing amount of times. I look foward to the day when there's an Irish F1 driver who's from the Republic but isn't from Dublin. Although an Irish F1 driver from any county now would be surprising, Adam Carroll won't be making it.
Mr. C, I found that too confusing, so I've not added yet.
P2T2 probe, pressure/temperature at engine intake
Static (atmospheric) pressure - in conjunction with pitot usually
understood. i can add?
how is it a victory though? {Comment #212}
They've laid down a marker. Henceforth, the FIA must follow the regulations it has written down or face an embarassing comedown. The item they had to stand down on is almost irrelevant compared to the imposition of FIA rules upon the FIA.
Probably already have some kind of lateral slip sensing (aside from driver's own ;) )
interesting. where the hell were you last year! :)
if memory serves. where the tv camera isn't sitting inside the mirror mount there's a spare space for equipment. i think maybe some teams stuck an infra-red camera pointing at the tyres in there, but i may be making that up.
5livef1 just mentioned force india have a podcast coming out on monday: {Comment #216}
Force India are trying very hard to take the title of "most internet-friendly team" from Renault :)
I will certainly keep an ear out for it.
i'm guessing it's maurice hamilton / ian phillips. what say you?
I think he holds the record for number of times failing to qualify. F1 Rejects have a thing on him. He went on to manage Mazda's Le Mans team with the mental sounding 787. Such a pity Carroll never had the budget. He's a bloody great driver. Apart from him, there doesnt seem to be anyone really promising around at the mo. Niall Breen was in Euro F3 last year. He didnt exactly set the world alight. Niall Quinn didnt seem to do much better in Brit F3. Derek Daly's young fella's supposed to be a bit handy.
Could also be a sensor for measuring road speed kinda like a radio altimeter
What they need is TCAS, but I suppose DC has retired now :D
Philips seems a certainty
:D
Certainly hope so
ten minutes further into the podcast, that “week” dropped to just 4 days of research. {Comment #219}
I suppose they needed the other day to convince the FIA to read the research...
(Yes, I'm in a cynical mood tonight)
Cos Renault Podcast often fails to download 1st time on iTunes. Maybe they're suffering from buffering issues too
hope so. despite his wife/ex/stalker trying to convince us he's not doing his job correctly, i still like him.
Me too
lol, what was that all about?
i think i'm gonna have to drop.io it. how hard is it to fix an rss feed?
no idea. keeps coming back though :)
Is that a coding joke?
not really. their rss feed (the thing itunes uses) is broken. not a great start to the season.
I may not be html compliant but I know what RSS is :D
btw: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/will-code-html-jpg
:D
:D
I thought it might be a "how many Renault IT engineers does it take to fix an RSS feed" line ;)
;)
more than they have available.
Maybe they were 'doing a Piquet' and waiting to crash
fp1 friday.
Incidentally, do we think Brawn will have some super-quali set-up to stoke the fire some more on Fri?
I'm saying yes and P10/12 for quali
My 1st was a ‘63? Morris minor {Comment #340}
My first car is unlikely to be bought for at least two years because even if I got a job, it's unlikely I'd be able to afford the insurance and driving lesson expenses until then.
3. Just passed my Theory test. Phew! {Comment #344}
Congratulations, Selidor!
i'm expecting new aero parts from bmw and ferrari.
i think brawn will race with what they have.
I think Friday's times will be all over the place this year with testing regs
true, but engines are limited to 8 per year. if i was lacking in confidence, i'd sit out friday. if i was really confident, i'd sit out friday.
do we have an early weather check yet?
Possibly. Fishing for sponsors perhaps. If they do, I dont think they'll be as low as 10/12 though. I'm a bit shocked how far behind Brawn Force India are. Seeing as how both cars were designed around different engines than the Merc they have now.
7 days+ is too unreliable
Melbourne isn't the dryest of place but it is the tail end of summer and we don't see too many wet Aussie races. Currently in the high 20s
If was thinking more about aero and/or other
Do practice set-ups have to be FIA compliant, am guessing they do
I checked the weather earlier today and it's sun sun sun for all 3 days. Not a drop of rain in sight. That's great I reckon.
We might be seeing Brawn being more competitive than McLaren for the first few races, there's a shocker.
Cian, got msn for a chat?
i'm gonna sleep now. but before i go, i'll leave you with a quick plug.
today and sunday are christine's last two days off from f1 minute until the end of the season. that means from monday, f1m is 7 days a week, and i think the big pic will also be 7 days per week until november.
please check out friday's audio @ http://www.f1minute.com/
as well as the photos @ http://www.f1bigpicture.com/
it's the calm before the storm. catch y'all in the morning.
last thing we need is the weather confusing matters.
yup. all cars have to be strictly legal.
So, he had the ability to hit send but was still using floppys?
Welcome to 1989 {Comment #473}
Matt wasn't the one using floppies - that was a bloke called Phil Mackareth. Though what McLaren had floppy drives in its computers circa 2007 for is another question entirely. Perhaps McLaren's IT staff wondered the same thing after the problem occurred...
G'night Mr C
I love f1bigpicture
Sure Joe, is it koshir to put my email on here so you can add me?
And night Mr. C.
I bought a new LCD telly last week with freeview to take advantage of the reported BBC red button stufff this year.
The question is, do I move the telly in sight of the live commenting 'puter or vice versa?
Yep, go right on. I might be gone in a sec but if I am then I'll add you tomorrow.
Hey Alianora. A lot of manufacturing places would still have floppy drives on theyre CAM machinery like CMM machines for inputing CAD drawings.
You can add your addy in the normal (browser) doohickey then edit it out afterwards if you like
Alright guys, I'm out.
Night.
cool, its cian******co.uk. I'm going to head off to bed soon, so no worries!
G'night Joe
Night Joe. Good thinkin Bassano, Ill do that tomorrow.Anyway, Im off too, night :)
rubbish!
by way of example i took a screenshot of your comment, compressed it into jpeg format and the smallest i could make it, whilst remaining legible was 14KB.
{Comment #474}
The screenshot is 15cm x 2.2 cm. I also don't know what compression level you used If I squint, I can read it without zooming in.
I've just put a test image into drop.io. It's not very detailed because detailed drawing isn't my greatest strength at 2:30am, but it is a 10cm x 10cm JPEG, it is 1.18KB and some writing and writing and an image should be visible (though you may have to zoom in to get the best benefit). The tricks are to get the resolution down and use greyscale (colour takes much more space).
The PNG version is even better, at 296 bytes for the same image (and a lot clearer!), but I'm not sure whether Phil Mackareth would have known how to convert graphic file formats...
Well if there were floppy disks involved, I'm guessing not ;)
Time for bed for me.
Collecting car tomorrow *yay!* Also planning on going to the range to relax.
TTFN
Nite, Flibster...
Apparently these new rules don't come into play till 2010, because the F1 teams have no unanimously agreed and it would be after the Melbourne GP that they would agree, if they favoured the new rule set.

That looks particularly interesting Jon. I've sent off for a prospectus for more information as Bucks Univesity in High Wycombe is only a few miles away from me and I'm looking to go back to Uni as a mature student.
I've applied to Oxford Brookes for either their Motorsport Engineering or Technology course. I had a look round their new facilities a couple of days ago. It is seriously impressive what they had on offer and has close links to Williams and Renault who are a stones throw away.
Completely agreed. It's rubbish. Zero depth on any of the teams bar a sentence or two.
Previous years it used to be a handy booklet, guessing Haymarket are cutting down on production costs at the moment.
The Guardian have an F1 preview today in their paper (should be online so I'll search for it in a minute). Last year's was good and Red Bulletin-esque (F1 paddock Red Bulletin and not the GQ wannabe version).
Erm. Came onto lclt to see last nights posts and I can only see the last 3. Everything else is fine. Quite odd
Yeah, one of my other offers is from Brookes, its a lovely place. The courses are all a bit too design-y for me, the guy told us you go 2 days in the workshop and thats about it, the real 'doing' time comes from doing formula student.
You been to an open day to the one in Wycombe? Initial impressions?
Literally only discovered the course this week, some 360 shots ive seen look good, inside is totally revamped, outside looks a bit old but its all getting revamped at the moment so it'll probably change before september. I'm going to an open day at the end of next month.
It looks an absolute dump from the outside. But that says more about Wycombe than anything! :-D
Wycombe is going through a massive revamp at the moment and they're improving it all for the better. The Uni inside has been vastly improved from what I've heard as well. I know someone who works in their IT department and he's full of praise for it.
I might be joining you on the open day if it's next month! I'm open to suggestions for any motorsport related courses, the one at Brookes fills me with the fear. Though that's more to do with the fact I've been out of education for 10 years nearly!
Sounds like a plan. What are you looking for from a course?
Still in the decision making process at the moment. Completely and utterly fed up with the way my 'career' has panned out thus far and thought now is the time to 'risk it for the biscuit'.
Been speaking to someone I know who works at RBR in the composites department and his advice about getting into the industry was "It's not what you know, but who you know," which is all well and good, but I need something to get my foot in the door to begin with.
Ultimate aim is to have something that says I know my beans and fingers-crossed find employment within the motor sport industry, don't really mind where or how. Though it's highly competitive so taking time to find the right course for me.
The way i see the courses; if you want to be a Designer go to Brookes, if you want to be a race engineer do one of the many HND-types and if you want to be more of a business/doing non-techy stuff then Bucks is the place. But they all have elements of each, so alot of research has to go into Modules and that kind of thing.
The one thing that puts me off Brookes is the course duration. Probably looking at 4/5 years in total, though on the flip side, one of those would be a years placement within the industry which could prove invaluable - that's if there are places by then (depending on the economy).
Motorsport Engineering is very specific, but in theory brings better rewards. Motorsport Technology (the one I'm looking at) deals more with the CAD/CAM side of things and CFD. That sort of stuff would be right up my street.
I'll give Bucks University a tinkle on Monday to discuss their course further. Sent off for a prospectus so will mull it over.
not necessarily true. rumour has it he still worked for haymarket at the time and didn’t officially take up the mclaren role until january. {Comment #478}
The version I heard was that he'd used a Haymarket e-mail address which hadn't been de-registered to send a McLaren missive (in this rumour, he was working in a sort of transition zone in terms of where he was working). Either way, the employment situation compounded the error.
Well now that it’s been published here, the letter will be in the post Monday {Comment #503}
I wouldn't worry that much. The bill will be paid by Honda, not Brawn, and Honda could always try using the FIA's behaviour to cite breach of contract and get them to pay the fine instead...
Didn’t we always know that the FIA was only setting up these groups as lip service once they’d brainstormed the overtaking issue? {Comment #515}
Using them as lip service is one thing. Blatantly breaking their own regulations is something else - a politically foolish something else, in all probability.
i’m guessing it’s maurice hamilton / ian phillips. what say you? {Comment #532}
I say YAY! :D
Better still, the combination sounds plausible.
i think i’m gonna have to drop.io it. how hard is it to fix an rss feed? {Comment #543}
That's a bit of a sore subject at the moment. I've been trying to fix my RSS feed since Tuesday and it has so far resisted every single attempt :(
Hey Alianora. A lot of manufacturing places would still have floppy drives on theyre CAM machinery like CMM machines for inputing CAD drawings. {Comment #572}
In that case, I suppose it is plausible for McLaren to have had floppy drives still in their computers. It just seems strange that they haven't switched to CD burners or something of that kind for file transfer. Easier to secure and not as unreliable.
(USBs would have been out of the question because security on those is a nightmare).
