Yesterday was something to behold, wasn't it? For those of us watching qualifying, we had quite a long time to wait to get to the results. For those who didn't, the highlights will sum it all up for you in a much more sensible amount of time! Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • F1 Wolf had some troubles with his site earlier today, but is back up and running now with his rundown of all that went on in qualifying. Probably best to read as many posts as you can about qualifying to try and make sense of it all!
  • Ollie has written about the BBC and their coverage of the extended session yesterday. We've had some choice words to say about the BBC recently, but they did seem to cope with the uncertainty really well.
  • In the self-promotion department, we have got the new season page working over in the playground. It lacks something in the looks department, but is fully automatic, so everything should update as the site does. Yay for not having to manually enter things anymore!

That'll do for now, I reckon. I'm hoping that today there will be less hanging around and waiting for the action to begin, but who knows!

With all those delays on top of being a late than usual session, it feels really weird having midnight come through so soon after quali

Want to see Mav's pretty fuel-adjusted grid graphic?

I like the cars! It looks really good.

I am in 2 minds about the weights, if it is wet then rubens could be in trouble. I fear the saftey car will be crucial though

This is annoying. I missed the whole of qualifying due to swimming club (looks like Interlagos was not entirely dissimilar!) and feel a bit short-changed having sat through two hours of programming to only get half a qualifying (the first half at that)...

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 23:38

You need to pretend other people write your posts then you can plug Mav's new post then at the end say - oops, it's mine.

Anything could happen. Heidfeld fueled light from the back of the grid looks odd unless BMW think there will be an early weather change

I have got it recorded and I'll be home at 6.30pm so I can watch it then :D I don't promise I will know though, I am not like Lou ;)

My alarm did go off, but my alarm is my phone, so I turned it off and went back to sleep. Evidentially by turning it off I left it in my bed so didn't notice it when I did the final 'what have I left behind' check of the room.

    Ouch!

You can normally find powerpoints in airport lounges, look for floor flaps, or behind tables? Also there are often some behind vending machines, waterfountains or near TV's ;)

you shouldn't have any boot conflicts anymore. You have two options upgrading or new install but since your disk is empty now I suggest new install. set you partitions up something like / = 15GB /home = rest and swap =RAM or / = 15GB /home = 10GB /data (or /nameofyourchoice for all your data) = rest and /swap = RAM.

  • Kathi18/10/2009 at 02:00

MrC i dont know if this is a good time to ask... but any ideas of how to make my PC boot windows on startup when it defaults to Ubuntu?

    I know nut it's a bit late now I guess ;)

did the install process run normally like with the older version or did it crash half way through? There are some bug reports saying that this fancy new slideshow they use crashed the installer somewhere during/after partitioning.

Not sure if it's been mentioned that Liuzzi will change his gearbox, while Vettel opts to stick with his engine and gearbox (so far). So that means Button's 14th, Vettel's 15th.

Rubens must win because awww how nice would it be to win at home after 17 years.

I know we don't normally look at football... But did anyone see this?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPsBe4O38vI

A kid hit a balloon onto the football field yesterday and when one of the players went to score a goal the ball hit the balloon, bounced off of it and into the goal. So they scored.

Apparently the goal shouldn't have been allowed, but it was:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8312966.stm

Sounds such a crazy regulation / stewards problem that it could be F1 ;)

In the self-promotion department, we have got the new season page working over in the playground. It lacks something in the looks department, but is fully automatic, so everything should update as the site does. Yay for not having to manually enter things anymore!

Oh I see. Well I have to go to work again in a bit. It's a bit ridiculous.

Let me see if I can do a reconstruction for you.

It was all rrRRRRRRrrrrrgggghhhRRRRrrrr. And then WooomWaaaahWooom. And then GGrrrrrrRRRggggRRRRR. And then FP2 finished.

    :D

I sent a complaint to the BBC.

    why?

  • Alison18/10/2009 at 10:58

    why?

I couldn't watch the end of qualifying. The only stuff on iplayer is up to when liuzzi crashes in Q2 and there's a red flag.

  • lou18/10/2009 at 10:59

:( ah no!! is that what Jake said spoke to the bbc about on twitter?

  • Nick18/10/2009 at 11:01

Why can't I see proper quali on the iplayer :(

The hightlights on bbc sport include most of q2 and all of q3 so you cn catch up there http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/default.stm

    Morning everyone ;)

  • Alison18/10/2009 at 11:01

:( ah no!! is that what Jake said spoke to the bbc about on twitter?

It's not that important now. I'm off out again in a minute, the race will have happened by the time I get back. I just wasn't so happy I watched over 2 hours of a boring programme that mainly involved people yapping and it didn't have the results in it....

  • Nick18/10/2009 at 11:02

I'm going to Spa! :) hehe

    Wow!

I didn't realise how much I missed real home until I went back and then had to leave again.

The first couple of times you go back home and leave are hard, it gets much easier though each time you do it, there isnt a lot you can do but try and distract yourself by doing fun things, in a couple of days you should feel better!

there was lots of sleeping in and eating involved, and then lying on the couch after lunch. And some deck building so the bbq has somewhere to live, but I could pay someone to do that for me.

Have woken to blue skies in Sao Paulo. A few clouds but very different to yesterday

Dry race, then? Good for Vettel in a sense, but it'll be tougher to make up places...

Bumped into Bernie Ecclestone in the lift on the way to breakfast. He think rain is the only thing that could help Jenson win title today

Indeed and start from the pitlane, you avoid any first corner madness.

  • lou18/10/2009 at 11:42

Oh, did you see my earlier mention - Jenson 14th, Seb 15th on the grid? That said, I'm VERY surprised they haven't opted to get Seb a fresh engine and gearbox.

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 11:43

I thought Seb can't use anymore engines? He's on his 8th

Exactly - if he gets a 9th engine, he'll have to take a 10-place grid penalty. Since he's starting 15th anyway, he'll only get demoted 4 or 5 places (depending on how they'd rank him with Liuzzi). If Vettel pulls off a miracle to keep his hopes alive, he has a fresh-ish engine for Abu Dhabi, instead of one that went through Monza and Suzuka.

  • James18/10/2009 at 11:43

he was, but liuzzi opted to get a fresh gearbox and take the penalty. with lewis 16th now and heikki 17th (both with KERS), the start will be rather interesting.

  • lou18/10/2009 at 11:44

I wonder if the consideration is that Liuzzi will also start from the pitlane and ahead of him which doesn't get him out of too much trouble.

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 11:47

I wonder if the consideration is that Liuzzi will also start from the pitlane and ahead of him which doesn't get him out of too much trouble.

Hmmm. Good point. They have a lot of faith that their Monza-Suzuka engine can take Abu Dhabi.

  • James18/10/2009 at 11:48

Hmmm. Good point. They have a lot of faith that their Monza-Suzuka engine can take Abu Dhabi.

The engines have held up so far and they've pushed one of them way beyond its normal operating life. Vettel has nothing to lose by going with them.

  • lou18/10/2009 at 11:49

i hope there is more wine in the house, i may need some after the race given that Button and Vettel are starting so close to each other and Jenson is making comments about having to have an amazing race... i fear he may push it too hard or something..

I dunno... I think he has nothing to lose by going for a new engine. As an engine gets older, it starts losing revs (if I remember what I read correctly), and you still risk blowing it up. Why say no to extra revs?

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 11:51

Yeah. The last British show I really liked was Free Agents with Stephen Mangan and Sharon Horgan (oh and a completely insane Anthony Head).

  • Saad Pervez18/10/2009 at 12:01

Yeah. The last British show I really liked was Free Agents with Stephen Mangan and Sharon Horgan (oh and a completely insane Anthony Head).

looking into that right now, cheers

  • Lukeh18/10/2009 at 12:01

the terminal is under applications > accessories

  • Lukeh18/10/2009 at 12:04

is that the one in hospital setting?

Yeah, I consider it a british Scrubs but without a story really. Scrubs is fantastically funny but has such a brilliant story that keeps it going with the characters, whereas Green Wing is completely British and completely stupidly crazy.

  • Lukeh18/10/2009 at 12:05

Which also has Stephen Mangan in it, init? ;)

    Ah it does!

  • Nick18/10/2009 at 12:06

Oh yeah it told me that on the page (feels stoopid now)

  • Alex Andronov18/10/2009 at 12:06

Now I haven't seen it yet, and it very much depends on your sense of humour but I have heard excellent things about Psychoville. Basically if you liked League of Gentlemen then this is the thing for you.

  • Saad Pervez18/10/2009 at 12:07

Yeah, I consider it a british Scrubs but without a story really. Scrubs is fantastically funny but has such a brilliant story that keeps it going with the characters, whereas Green Wing is completely British and completely stupidly crazy.

ahh yeah i liked that one, only my landlady worked for the NHS and she hated any show set in a hospital, wouldnt let me watch that though she used to love f1

  • Lukeh18/10/2009 at 12:07

Also Green Wing has Mark Heap, which leads me onto the stupidly

    underrated Spaced.

If you liked Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz you'll love Spaced. More Simon Pegg/Nick Frost awesomeness.

  • Alex Andronov18/10/2009 at 12:08

it's worth to create a launch-icon for the terminal - just drag the icon from the menu to the panel where you want it

  • Lukeh18/10/2009 at 12:08

Now I haven't seen it yet, and it very much depends on your sense of humour but I have heard excellent things about Psychoville. Basically if you liked League of Gentlemen then this is the thing for you.

It starts on Dave tomorrow so hopefully it'll get more fans sooner than later :)

Ok, nearly there i think... i ran the command, but nothing seems to have changed? maybe i shouldnt have closed the terminal?

  • Alex Andronov18/10/2009 at 12:10

Actually perhaps not your scene. But for me the most laughs per episode of a recent thing on british telly was Not Going Out. Very much an old fashioned comedy show. But soooooo good. Lee Mack and Tim Vine.

Sadly has now been cancelled after 3 series.

  • Kathi18/10/2009 at 12:10

For a modern BBC comedy that was a really good show. So much better than most comedy sitcoms the BBC has put on a Friday night for years and they just threw it away. Bah.

  • Sean Golding18/10/2009 at 12:12

    G'Day everyone!

I'm not particularly liking the prospect of having to wake up three hours after Brazil finishes though... ;)

Although I have to say the first series of Mitchell and Webb Look is far better than the second and third. The radio series is very good.

Oh I do like it! I just think the sketches eventually got a tad predictable. Numberwang always makes me giggle though :D

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 12:26

Dad and I have successfully moved my 'big' furniture. I have returned to the old flat for a bit of a tidy up, and also because the internet is here so I can watch and comment the race :-)

I'm going to get lunch and do a comment catch-up, then back to it for a couple of hrs..

And Chris Addison as well: @mrchrisaddison Thought about launching a range of Death-related soft furnishings, but realised there would be reaper cushions

    FACT!

If you ever get a chance to check out the Armando Ianucci Shows (his tv series). They are hard to track down but sooooo worth it. His first show of the series was shown on Channel 4 on September 11th 2001. Which meant not many people have noticed them!

  • Christine18/10/2009 at 12:44

Interesting post from F1 Punter about who may or may not come from the back of the grid.

The standout feature about this bet for me is how well Fisichella has improved from poor grid positions already this season. In the fourteen races in which the Italian has been classified, he has made up a total of fifty-one places. That is second only to Timo Glock in the field and we know how much praise the German has received for his race drives this season.

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 12:46

Slightly wrong on the race classifications, Glock and Rosberg don''t have 100% as they finished a lap down at one race I believe.

Isn't classification completing 90% of race distance? I just excluded Retirements and DSQs. I know what you are saying about 100% of the laps though.

    Weather update from NobleF1:

A local Brazilian journalists says forecast suggests a torrential downpour from 3pm

That's because it's really sunny in Wales, so with that logic, it must be raining everywhere else

  • me18/10/2009 at 13:15

Have had that happen for about a week, it's VERY annoying

it's a bit cheeky, because it happens BEFORE you reach the site, so it has no idea you're a paying subscriber and thus you get ads anyway.

    rude!

  • RG18/10/2009 at 13:16

That's because it's really sunny in Wales, so with that logic, it must be raining everywhere else

No, its just absolutly freezing up here.

On that note, homework to do so shall catch you lot for the start of the race.

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 13:18

Bad news for Vettel, good news for Barrichello, GREAT news for Button.

  • Sean Golding18/10/2009 at 13:18

I'm supposed to be doing that. Maybe I should spend 2.5 hours doing my essay before the race...

    Goooood times

Will this play any part in the election on Friday? And will it help Ari by giving the FIA a dirty image, or will it help Todt as delegates feel that the FIA is under attack again and need to unite as Max had urged them to, but now with Todt?

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 13:28

It was never the end of the matter.

But if Flav's suit fails, won't this just get Flav into more trouble?

  • Nick18/10/2009 at 13:29

Good afternoon! I am back, I have chromium on linux,

    kathi has been amazingly helpfull!

This time yesterday i had no OS now i have a fully functioing and very friendly one :D

  • F1Punter18/10/2009 at 13:30

But if Flav's suit fails, won't this just get Flav into more trouble?

I guess it is a danger moving it into a different legal domain. But it really shouldn't be too hard for a lawyer to prove that the FIA is a joke!

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 13:31

Now I haven't seen it yet, and it very much depends on your sense of humour but I have heard excellent things about Psychoville. Basically if you liked League of Gentlemen then this is the thing for you.

Psychoville was very weird and a bit disturbing... but I liked it

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 13:32

I guess it is a danger moving it into a different legal domain. But it really shouldn't be too hard for a lawyer to prove that the FIA is a joke!

But the last time the FIA was taken to court, the legal courts refused to intervene and said it was the FIA's domain.

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 13:34

anyone seeing this on autosport.com feed - you click on an entry link and instead of taking you to the expected page, you just receive a full screen advert and no content?

Ah that's annoying, I'm glad I unsubscribed to the feed a couple of weeks ago (it was dominating my feed and I was checking the site itself every day anyway)

  • Stuart C18/10/2009 at 13:43

    Afternoon all.

I went to the gym just before lunch, and in just one seven-minute period I almost scored a full house in Allo Allo bingo. There was:-

    - Italian captain making inappropriate advances to Helga

    - "Now listen very carefully – I shall say this only once"

    - Rene eyeing up potential barmaids

    - An appearance by Inspector Crabtree ("I saw two men leaking by the dustbins" etc)

    - The English airmen having to be concealed at short notice, owing to the arrival of Herr Flick

All I was missing was a "You stupid woman!" and some japes involving a priceless work of art and some bratwurst.

  • Stuart C18/10/2009 at 13:44

    The only way is up.

Being on the bottom line sure ain't no fun.

My 'Questions for Bloggers' interviewed was interrupted for about a minute when AEK Athens scored a goal.

I loved the moment in the comments when Christine asked if you had the tv on in the background of your show.

  • Stuart C18/10/2009 at 13:55

In other news, my devious strategem to overcome the unwelcome interaction between dinner time and the end of the race has been to braise some brisket in red wine in the slow cooker.

How are the other UK-and-Europe-based commenters dealing with this?

In other other news, the sporting afternoon is beginning with Bath vs Stade Francais (who are playing in some hideous pink confection).

  • RG18/10/2009 at 13:55

I loved the moment in the comments when Christine asked if you had the tv on in the background of your show.

It was an added effect to make the show more 'comfy'

  • Alex Andronov18/10/2009 at 13:58

How are the other UK-and-Europe-based commenters dealing with this?

We had a big problem with this. I was planning to have a sunday roast at about 3pm. But then we decided that we weren't really that hungry yet. So that kind of went out of the window. Now I'm planning the difficult action of doing all the prep for the roast pre-tv. And then throwing the chicken in the oven so it will come out approximately after the race finishes. I'm doing pan fried veg rather than roasted for complicated reasons which means I can deal with them after the race.

That is, as long as the race isn't extended...

  • Alex Andronov18/10/2009 at 14:00

I'm afraid to say that I just had a massive musical craving for Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. I'm not sure how it happened, or why. But it did - and I'm man enough to admit it :)

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 14:00

    Oh, how could you?

  • Alex Andronov18/10/2009 at 14:10

It came on a Christmas compilation. It was the one song I almost edited out actually. However I felt honesty is the best policy.

I looked back to try and find a reference and it does look like nobody has ever posted the correct link to the autosport feed... Google errerously suggested this page because it contains F1 News I guess. The comments reveal certain bits of Sidepodlore... Apple still important. Sidepodsister is better at numbers than the man who does the numbers! And Mr C saying, "what was the point of bringing Rubens to Honda if they weren't going to listen to him - who says F1 doesn't go around in circles ;)

Toyota is still considering retaining Timo Glock for next year, but sources suggest that the German is the preferred choice by Renault to slot in alongside Robert Kubica.

    Ooooh.

    Ex-Boy Band member?

Must be the look, I guess. :D

Ex-boy band member Button takes Championship, Brawn takes constructors title. The Scoopster hears he won't be with Brawn in 2010 though...

he will be with brawn next year.

  • RG18/10/2009 at 19:53

    McLaren? :o

    Williams instead of Barrichello?

  • Janna18/10/2009 at 19:53

Jake just tweeted let's hope our currently broken plane mend itself otherwise we're here for a while.. Doesn't sound good

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 19:53

    McLaren? :o

Well, it can't be Williams or Toyota, surely? Gotta be McLaren if he's leaving.

  • RG18/10/2009 at 19:53

he will be with brawn next year.

    Thats the spirit ;)

  • lou18/10/2009 at 19:53

    McLaren? :o

no... he can't go there. i will cry a lot... that would be rrrrrubish.

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 19:54

    Williams instead of Barrichello?

Some love-hate relationship they have. :D

    McLaren? :o

Ferrari since they only have 8 drivers signed for next season

  • James18/10/2009 at 19:54

Well, it can't be Williams or Toyota, surely? Gotta be McLaren if he's leaving.

Indeed, no other team with seats, other than Brawn can guareentee a title defence next year.

  • Bassano Clapper18/10/2009 at 19:54

no... he can't go there. i will cry a lot... that would be rrrrrubish.

I still want Kimi back at Woking

  • Steven Roy18/10/2009 at 19:55

Jake just tweeted let's hope our currently broken plane mend itself otherwise we're here for a while.. Doesn't sound good

I think it is a political technical problem to let them party. There are other planes

  • lou18/10/2009 at 19:55

    why?

he belongs at brawn and i am not a fan of mclaren.. plus he'd be no.2 to Lewis and i would hate hate HATE that.

  • RG18/10/2009 at 19:55

Indeed, no other team with seats, other than Brawn can guareentee a title defence next year.

    BMW/QADBAK/14th Team/That Lot?

  • Bassano Clapper18/10/2009 at 19:55

Ex-boy band member Button takes Championship, Brawn takes constructors title. The Scoopster hears he won't be with Brawn in 2010 though...

he will be with brawn next year.

    Agreed, pure speculation I think

  • lou18/10/2009 at 19:55

I still want Kimi back at Woking

oh yeah exactly... it's kimi's seat.

  • James18/10/2009 at 19:55

Well we should know soon where he will be next year :)

  • Jon Waldock18/10/2009 at 19:56

he belongs at brawn and i am not a fan of mclaren.. plus he'd be no.2 to Lewis and i would hate hate HATE that.

he wouldnt be number 2 to lewis, he's a good driver, they'd be pretty even.

  • Nick18/10/2009 at 19:56

he belongs at brawn and i am not a fan of mclaren.. plus he'd be no.2 to Lewis and i would hate hate HATE that.

Technicaly lewis would be number 2 :P

  • Journeyer18/10/2009 at 19:56

    Agreed, pure speculation I think

F1Scoop has usually been accurate though. We shall see.

  • RG18/10/2009 at 19:56

he belongs at brawn and i am not a fan of mclaren.. plus he'd be no.2 to Lewis and i would hate hate HATE that.

Course not, the only Brit who should be there is di Resta.

  • Bassano Clapper18/10/2009 at 19:56

he belongs at brawn and i am not a fan of mclaren.. plus he'd be no.2 to Lewis and i would hate hate HATE that.

IF it happened, which it won't. They'd have equal status

  • Steven Roy18/10/2009 at 19:57

Course not, the only Brit who should be there is di Resta.

    Quite right

  • F1Punter18/10/2009 at 19:57

he wouldnt be number 2 to lewis, he's a good driver, they'd be pretty even.

Alonso is the best driver but was still number 2 to Hamilton (or as Ron called it at the time, equal status).

  • James18/10/2009 at 19:57

IF it happened, which it won't. They'd have equal status

    Exactly, thats what McLaren do...

    apparently.. :)

  • Jon Waldock18/10/2009 at 19:57

Alonso is the best driver but was still number 2 to Hamilton (or as Ron called it at the time, equal status).

And how many years has Ron been away from mclaren for?

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 19:58

he wouldnt be number 2 to lewis, he's a good driver, they'd be pretty even.

And we know how good McLaren are at handling that.

  • Nick18/10/2009 at 19:58

Course not, the only Brit who should be there is di Resta.

I am sure the journos would love that just so they could make puns like "hes best of Di Resta"

  • Jon Waldock18/10/2009 at 19:58

And we know how good McLaren are at handling that.

different mclaren, different owner. i think you'd be surprised

  • F1Punter18/10/2009 at 19:58

And how many years has Ron been away from mclaren for?

    That will help admittedly.

  • Bassano Clapper18/10/2009 at 19:58

And how many years has Ron been away from mclaren for?

    Less than one

  • Jon Waldock18/10/2009 at 19:59

I am sure the journos would love that just so they could make puns like "hes best of Di Resta"

    :D

  • Jon Waldock18/10/2009 at 19:59

    Less than one

oh yeah :) i thought it was 2007, but my point still stands

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 19:59

different mclaren, different owner. i think you'd be surprised

Not a different owner. Plus Whitmarsh has effectively been running it for a while anyway.

  • Jon Waldock18/10/2009 at 20:00

Not a different owner. Plus Whitmarsh has effectively been running it for a while anyway.

    owner/runner, same deal ;)

  • James18/10/2009 at 20:00

Not a different owner. Plus Whitmarsh has effectively been running it for a while anyway.

Whitmarsh is different to Ron and Lewis has grown on me this year which is shocking clearly Ron leaving has helped ;)

  • Pat W18/10/2009 at 23:07

I must be on some sort of come-down after such an busy race.... everything feels empty.

  • Andy Taylor18/10/2009 at 23:07

Was this race an all-time record for Leggard saying stupid things?

He kept wittering on about Jenson's chances of winning the championship while we watched Rosberg retire.

Was this race an all-time record for Leggard saying stupid things?

I thought he was excellent the first half of the race, i completly forgot to change over to Ant and Croft.

When i did i ended up changing back as hearing about every other sporting event so often distracts so much from the flow of the commentary. they need a dedicated feed
