Friday turns into Saturday and there is one more Free Practice session to enjoy before the best part of the weekend is upon us. Qualifying for this crucial championship race will be something to behold, I'm sure. Meanwhile, here are some things we're talking about:

  • The results posts for FP1 and FP2 have a bit of a new look to them, and whilst this is more of a pre-cursor to what will happen to them on Sidepodcast 3.0, it's safe to say that already they look a million times better.
  • A great question arose from the second session which sparked a blog post and a poll - which circuit hosts the best championship showdown?  The votes have been piling in and it looks as though Brazil is winning, but please have your say and we'll tally the totals later.
  • Finally, it was a busy day yesterday, as we also wrote about the new Codemasters game, albeit as an excuse to post a video with Croftie and Ant. They always look and sound like they're having great fun whatever they're doing, it's a great pairing.

That'll do it for now. We're running a bit behind on F1 Digest but it should be up at some point today. There's me saying the Brazil timings were so great, but it throws the whole schedule out! Anyway, I will see you in the comments.

Well I could live without it for a month or too and have, but i do miss it!

I would say its more like TV, Its unfair to deny people access to it , but it isnt going to stp me staying alive if i dont!

Sadly, I'll probably miss Qualy. Friend thinks that he'll have an earlier night if he starts earlier in the pub

    Heheh.

I'm doing final pre-move prep tomorrow, but can't actually continue shifting stuff in the morning because of the town market in the way, so I'll be sorting paperwork. Ought to be able to get a load down there before FP3 starts, then another between sessions.

  • startledbunny16/10/2009 at 23:26

You forget that some people like to check their Footy team's league position constantly, in case they move up/down, even though they aren't playing any games.

  • startledbunny16/10/2009 at 23:30

Me and a Friend were in a Pub once, and we were playing Ridge Racer against each other whilst holding Steering Wheel in one hand, Pint in other. I seemed to drive better. That was when beer was cheaper than Arcade Games.

My internet will be here at the old place until Tuesday, but Dad is coming with a trailer to move all my 'big stuff' on Sunday. We'll be done by race-time but it'll be good to move the telly while I have an extra pair of hands around. I'm thinking I'll leave the PC here and watch it online.

  • Pat W16/10/2009 at 23:50

me too. i should take back what i said about them creaming interest.

You can't have all your income coming in one hit once a year, they need it spread about. I know they have other races but I can't imagine the gate take is very high.

They'll probably get hit with a set number of 'noisy' days, like Zandvoort or Brands Hatch or wherever. They'll just nominate F1 as one of those weekends.

My nephew is at the U.S Naval Academy studying aeronautical engineering. He's got an independant study project and suggested looking into the problems dealing with aero and tires. I suspect that that's just something the engineers have had to learn to live with

  • Joe in Fla17/10/2009 at 00:02

I mentioned the double decker diffuser problem at the beginning of the season and he liked the idea, I also mentioned that I heard that greater than 50% of the downforce on an F1 car comes from underneath. My question is, does anyone have any great articles that may help in his research?

Tyre wear is always an issue.

On commercial aircraft, a tyre can last between 1 and 200 landings. Landing on a pudle of water which will instantly steam and blister a tyre can write it off on landing #1

    Oooh, interesting read:

Yeongam gears up for Korean GP

    Things to note:

Korea’s National Assembly passed a bill providing a government subsidy for the event worth 88 billion won ($76 million), boosting a long-term project spearheaded since 2006 by the organizers

Under the initial contract with the FIA, the annual race will be held in Yeongam for a period of seven years. After that, an extension for five years could be granted, according to the organizers.

  • startledbunny17/10/2009 at 00:55

    The folly of youth, sometines

I'd be more wary about Westlife, or Backstreet Boys

  • Journeyer17/10/2009 at 00:56

One of the noteworthy characteristics of the Yeongam F1 circuit, which has been laid out by one of the world’s top circuit designers, Hermann Tilke, is the dual structure, organizers say. Ordinarily, there would be two separate F1-standard-sized circuits - a 3.06 kilometer track in the north that resembles the shape of a hat and the other in the south. During the F1 period, the two will be merged to create 5.62 kilometers, which will be the second-longest among all F1 tracks following the one in Monza, Italy, at 5.79 kilometers.

Ugh, Tilke again. But that is a LONG circuit - even longer than Spa, I think.

  • Bassano Clapper17/10/2009 at 00:56

I'd be more wary about Westlife, or Backstreet Boys

  • Journeyer17/10/2009 at 00:56

And it's counterclockwise too. Tilke has begun falling in love with the counterclockwise concept.

  • Nick17/10/2009 at 00:58

Turkey, Singapore, Abu Dhabi.... quite a few recently!

Nope, it's not longer than Spa, as it turns out. It's a tad shorter than Monza, but longer than Singapore.

Just watched the 1993 Brazil GP on iPlayer, and now the 1994 one. Neither of these were broadcast on TV live. In fact I remember listening to Legard commentating on Radio Five in 1993, and waiting for the highlights.

  • Journeyer17/10/2009 at 01:06

Todt is letting Ari make all the mistakes, the public aren't voting

True - but Ari is playing this as a PR war, and there is some value to that. Also, TV/radio would be the fastest way to reach all the FIA voters (who watch F1 anyway).

  • Journeyer17/10/2009 at 01:06

Don't trust the word of someone who says "I'll vote for you"

But surely Ari knows who to trust and who not to trust by now? He's an MEP, he's been there.

  • startledbunny17/10/2009 at 01:07

How does Legard circa 1993 sound like?

A bit like Legard circa 2009, but with more talking. I think he had Sir Stirling Moss with him. Thank goodness Murray did the TV highlights.

  • Pat W17/10/2009 at 01:07

I found a good SPC theme tune last night.

    Hot Chip - Baby Said

"My baby said she wanted adventure,

I said 'baby, the outside was not safe, we should sit down'"

"why must I go out into the cold, my life is inside, we're safe we can hide."

  • Bassano Clapper17/10/2009 at 01:07

So he talks even less now than when he started? Well, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised (you always talk more on radio to make up for the lack of visuals), but it wouldn't hurt if Legard talked a wee bit more.

I remember th first time I saw an Intel Inside sticker on a PC and I thought Intel are stupid because they sell to the PC manufacturers not the public. Any idea how many people will only buy a PC with Intel Inside even if they don't know what Intel do?

  • startledbunny17/10/2009 at 01:10

Watching the 1994 highlights, I remember Senna spinning out, and I can vividly remember an Autosport cover headline after 2 races. It was something like "Schumacher 20, Senna 0".

Many apologies for mentioning the retired german. :(

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 01:11

At this point, surely Ari should have some idea who's backing who?

It's always hard to read. Both Max and Balestre were convinced they were miles ahead when Max won the first time. Mainly because they both thought Bernie was running their campaign

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 01:18

i don't understand why ari has been to half the f1 races this year?

There are a lot of FIA politicians at races and with there being so many it is easier to have a quiet word here or there without the powers that be noticing. He has to address th public too to create a desire for change

All of the above. At the first race he went to there was talk of a breakaway so he would want to keep F1 in the FIA long enough for him to sort it out. The new Concorde Agreement goes till 2012 so if he wins he is in a position to sort things out and if Todt wins he has to deal with it.

Perhaps Ari should sort of follow Max's lead. When there was a vote of confidence, apparently max went round the motorsport associations and got support from them. What I read at the time though was that he was either threatening them or promising things to them. It was in a National Newspaper, so I can't believe the story fully, but Ari needed to take a similar route, without the threatening bit.

    Then catch up ;)

I heard all the praise at the time, but never had time to watch it on telly. Saw it was available a couple of weeks ago, and yes, I agree. Very high quality. But if you watch a bunch in succession (I watched 12 eps in 7 days) you swear like a mobster for days :-)

We had loads of back episodes of Heroes stored on our PVR. It was bricked by an Over the Air update, but we had to format the HDD. At this point the hammer came out, and I destroyed the box.

Listening to F1 is better than you'd think. I'm not sure you miss too much tbh if you listen to it while driving or whatever. You can watch the highlights to see any amazing passing moves.

    In front

    True Blood

True Blood looks interesting. I recorded the first on C4 last week, would have done tonight had it worked.. I'm sure it'll roll around on-demand soon enough.

    My list:

Sopranos - S1E13 plus whatever else I can get

    24 - watched S1 but no other

Battlestar - ditto but have the S1-4 box set, so that's high up.

LOST - not sure whether to

Flight of the Conchords - have the DVD

Black Books - seen S1, have the S2 DVD in the queue

Prison Break - curious about it, never saw it.

I started on the original CSI too.

I really like the concept of BT Vision. The execution leaves a lot to be desired but things being available on-demand on your telly without the aid of a computer is great.

They need more storage to keep things available for much longer, they need it to stop dying when busy, they need the Freeview integration to not suck..

  • Bassano Clapper17/10/2009 at 02:00

No, a Thomson Top Up TV + box. It had a Sky+ esque remote, 250GB HDD. I didn't bother with the subscription or the free Topup TV trial.

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 02:23

    It's because I came home.... :P

Why else. I would have thought you would be glued to Michel

  • startledbunny17/10/2009 at 02:23

Alison doesnt believe she is a paper mache expert, you need to convince her, then volunteer her to do an instructional video ;)

All we need to know, is the ingredients, and whether there is any packaging that needs to be removed beforehand.

  • Alison17/10/2009 at 02:24

Why else. I would have thought you would be glued to Michel

I'd have to catch him first. I think the fat one would be easier to track down....

I just meant he is on again. Of course since you need the glue for the papier maché masterpiece then you may as well get double duty from it

Thing is, I tried to be clever. So I bought bread and cereal, only.. I left it at the new place in readiness for when I transfer operations there. I forgot I had actually run out here. I do have soup. And the nearest place that sells anything at all is Morrisons*, so that's handy. *Technically the nearest is Bradfords builders merchants.

    100 Facts about Pandas!

Having read the description I'm not sure it's as serious a book as you might imagine... "Did you know pandas were frequently used as background extras in classic black and white films".

  • Jeremy17/10/2009 at 09:00

Good morning to you all. In what seems to be SPC tradition, today I looked at foreign lollies in a shop. I have just been out in centre of Sydney after work for (Ginger) beer and am now on a train home. Well, back to the car anyway. I did not sing on a roof top or dropio the alcohol menu. Must try harder.

  • Alison17/10/2009 at 09:02

It litterally popped into my inbox. People who bought More trees to climb by Ben Moore http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1846271983/ref=pe_3421_17116281_snp apparently also want to buy this book about pandas. I'm not sure I can see the connection myself but there you go.

I bought new shoes the other day and they have a very unorthodox lacing strategy built into them. In theory of course I can change them, but I'm not sure why they are the way that they are. They aren't Katherine shoe tying crazy. It's very hard to explain.

  • Jeremy17/10/2009 at 09:29

I lived in Brixton next to the prison for a year. There were so many thefts there that the Police actually had to stop putting out those Yellow incident boards because people were stealing those and melting down the signs for scrap.

    yep

  • me17/10/2009 at 15:21

    yep

what does the contents look like, it should read:

    RewriteBase /

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

Mr C, as Christine is so fantastically productive there are lots of posts on the site. This makes it hard to find the schedule for the weekend. Is there a way of putting the schedule, or a link to it, on the front page during a race weekend? I know you're helping F1Wolf right now so I'll add it to the wiki if that's OK

    hmm... so should Jenson...

vet has effectively written himself out of contention. one down, one to go.

i like this way of thinking #sorrylukeh but i so wanted Jenson to wrap up the title this weekend... or at least be on the podium when/ if brawn get the constructors. i know there is the race and things, but it's just a disappointment after waiting so long for Q2. i'm being silly, sorry i'll be quiet about it now and keep my grumpy thoughts to myself. Rubens did good, people should be pleased for him :)

  • me17/10/2009 at 20:06

button's real problem, is even if he wins the championship, it hasn't been a stellar end to the year. he needs to win it and win it in style.

which unfortunately looks difficult to achieve.

I have absolutely no reason to be annoyed at you or you wanting Jenson to win so don't you worry :) As a jenson fan you have every right to hope it goes wrong for Rubens and Jenson recovers anything tomorrow... on the bright side, Brawn should get that constructors tomorrow which will be amazing :D

The only thing that annoys me is that there are idiots out there that think supporting Rubens automatically thinks you don't like Jenson! If Rubens isn't gonna win this championship then I wouldn't want anyone else but Jenson, it's a bit ridiculous and probably my own fault for getting annoyed at such silly comments

  • Pat W17/10/2009 at 20:09

even if he comes away with 8 points surely he still has a chance?

Depends what Jenson does. All year he's salvaged points in races he shouldn't have scored anything.

Thats just Rubens though, it's his strong point.

  • Lukeh17/10/2009 at 20:20

Rubens, you need to think about what you are saying man!

"After so many years, after 17 in F1, I never got out of the car for a pee twice in the middle of qualifying! I am very proud of what we achieved today"

I hope that's a typo and there's no exclamation mark or punctuation...

    That would make my year

    My current fave

They have delayed this popular and money making programme for something that was dull, unimportant and quite frankly why was it prime time tv? BBC got this VERY wrong - remember your audience and how much we pay for you!

Well, Mr/Mrs BBC Commenter Person. The BBC don't actually run this F1 business, so you see, they can't actually choose when they air it.

  • Jon Waldock17/10/2009 at 20:42

Shouldn't you formula one anoraks - and I think in Brazil you might need one - should be watching the televised spray rather than spoiling our moan?

This is in a thread of 31 comments and about 3 F1 fans in it. :D

  • me17/10/2009 at 20:47

Re: Idiots complaining about the F1 ruining the TV coverage,

Last time I got all worked up about a TV programme getting cancelled, I got home and had a full on rant. My Dad turned round to me and said "Get a grip Gavin, it's only a TV programme - your sister's best mate just died!"

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 21:04

    Evening all

  • Scott Woodwiss17/10/2009 at 21:12

Us Brits are never happy unless we have a good moan. John Cleese never spoke a truer word in the MP "ex-parrot" sketch when he said "If you want to get something done in this country, you've got to complain 'till you're blue in the mouth".

Some of them are talking about it like it's worst thing in the world. Get over it, it's a goddamn TV programme! There's a simple solution for these whingers. It's called iPlayer. Learn to use it and then we're all happy. Rant over. :P

I don't think it is for show.. at least not for most of the year. Perhaps now things are a little more tense though.

It's bound to be more tense in these stages but I honestly don't think there's any issues. Unless you work for a tabloid, where Rubens and Jenson are probably preparing for a wrestling match or something ridiculous.

And then he expects me to think it's just a laugh and he's only winding me up. Unbelieveable.

It just shows the mess that Max has got the rules in when people have to go out in a monsoon in a car with dry settings because they think it will be dry tomorrow. F1- The most high tech sport in the world ????

Don't know if you guys have seen this, but I just read that Lloyds Bank wants to buy a share in Manor GP.

How would you do it then? the parc ferme rules were bought in to stop people putting a quali setup on.

BBC's TV coverage of quali is rubbish. I didn't have live timing for Q1 and I had no idea where anyone was. I saw Hamilton go P1 the next time I looked he was P18. If I can't follow it what chance has the casual fan. I had no idea how much I relied on live timing abd the comments

I'm not sure that that will be accurate it being a GMM story. But if it doesn't involve sponsorship it's much more likely to be a loan of some kind.

  • me17/10/2009 at 23:01

BBC's TV coverage of quali is rubbish

i say the same about all of their coverage.

i didnt say it was wrong, thats just how it is.

it splits the grid up more, and (should) make for more overtaking, although clearly we cant have any less overtaking

it was bought in to increase overtaking, whether its still needed i have no opinion on. frankly i dont think that they can make overtaking worse, so i dont care whether it stays or goes

I just find it stupid that we have people having to decide one or two days ahead of time what the weather is going to do. This is F1 not the weather forecasting championship. I don't see why pwoplw can't adjust wings, springs and ride height to suit the conditions that actually exist and not what they thought might exist or might exist on an entirely different day.

I can see the logic in not wanting people to have hand grenade engines but I don't see why they can't adjust the things I mentioned. There is not cost involved and it would allow the races and championship to be decided on competence rather than who can guess the weather best.

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 23:06

I am not watching a full weekend without my back up system to find out. I am not ready to go cold turkey. To be fair a big part of the problem is the pathetically inadequate FOM on-screen graphics

If we brought it back now, they'd rightly argue it was unsafe to race the changes untested, so warm-up would have to come back. A 15m session would be fine with me but they'd never agree on cost grounds.

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 23:09

We have that next year. Pole position will mean something again. I really don't get how pole positions in recent years can be considered an achievement when a lot of it is down to guessing fuel loads.

Ok, so lets say Car X is the fastest over a single lap but cant quite get it right over a long run and single lap, so theres no Q3 fuelling so they get pole, then they change their setup to one thats better for longer runs. Surely they'll just walk away with the race?

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 23:11

That;s what happens now when people make changes and start from the pits. If someone trashes their car in quali or FP3 in Webber's case they start the race with a car that has never run and a chassis they may never have sat in. That is insane for a sport that constantly goes on about safety

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 23:12

true enough. i think you'd be more informed with 5live though.

I think because it is radio they don't assume you can get info from the graphics which you should get

That is what we had for decades. Set the car up for quali and qualify it then set it up for the race and race it. That is what you are meant to do. F1 is supposed to be about excellence not who can guess the fuel load and the weather

    But that makes it dull

  • Steven Roy17/10/2009 at 23:17

    But that makes it dull

I don't see why. I want to see the people who do the best job to be rewarded and the people who do the worst job to be at the back. I don't want to see someone qualify 18th or 19th because their best guess is that the weather in 30 hours time will suit their car. That rewards the best weather forecaster or the luckiest. That is nothing to do with driving ability, engineering excellence, managing your resources. It is little more than dumb luck.

i agree to, but it opens the raceweekend up to the possibility of it being a total one person getting 1st in every session, which is dead boring for fans.

I agree that it should be about all ^ ^ stuff, but it's really not "little more than dumb luck" unless of course you rely on Meteo France

It depends how you view things. My view is F1 above all is a sport and I want to watch the sport. All sports at times are dull. I have stood through some insanely dull football matches but I don't want them to add random multiball periods just to keep me entertained.

Other people say that F1 should be there to entertain the fans as its primary function and anything that shakes things up is good. That was Briatore's position and he wanted to randomly reverse the first few grid positions etc.

I want to watch a sport not a circus.

I agree that it should be about all ^ ^ stuff, but it's really not "little more than dumb luck" unless of course you rely on Meteo France

You think anyone can forecast weather to the nearest ten minutes anywhere in the world? Let alone in Sao Paolo. We constantly hear different teams give their drivers different forecasts. We had some teams set up on dry set ups and others on wet because of their forecasts tomorrow. The difference in the forecasts is dumb luck

I do agree with you, but if you let them change anything arent you opening the door to them doing more? there are some very smart people, saying you can ajust a spring could lead to them replacing the whole rocker assembly on the engine.

It become difficult when the people competing are considerably smarter than those policing

I meant adjust rather than chage a unit. The springs are torsion bars so I see no problem in the team setting it a bit softer or harder in the garage. Same with the wings. I have no objection to any of these things being swapped out but to keep the basic rules as they are I really can't see why a team shouldn't lower or raise a wing or rip off a Gurney flap

Thats true, hopefully it will go that way. I have heard next year the teams will keep the cars in their garages under surveilance instead of them being locked away, maybe that will be a first step?

I hope so. I don't see the logic in teams being allowed to spend millions setting up and running a mission control at base and then random factors being thrown in which reward luck
