Free Practice Friday has reached us once more and we are in Brazil, this time not for the last race of the year. It feels very odd to think that there's another race after Brazil, and it will feel even stranger if the championship is decided this race. Nevertheless, here's what we're talking about at the moment:

  • Renault have blogged about their process for setting up in Brazil, with some added photos in there as well. You can already tell from their pictures that the weather is not great. Goodness knows what we're in for this weekend, but the weather forecasts suggest rain, rain and a little bit more rain on top.
  • Rich has written about the way the driver market is looking from within each team, with some interesting thoughts about who is confirmed and who isn't. We're nowhere near the end of silly season yet, so I hope to see more blogs like this, please.
  • It seems as though the Massa/Alonso rivalry is hotting up already and the pair aren't even teammates yet. Massa has said some things and others have said Massa didn't really mean it, and then he backtracked a little bit and in the end Alonso said it doesn't bother him. I have a feeling it's going to be a long year for Ferrari next season.

That's all for now. We'll be along with live commenting threads and suchlike later on in the day - I quite like these late starts for sessions in the UK. I will see you in the comments.

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 00:45

Morning, everyone. I saw Joe's post on Donington Bond, and I was shocked when I saw this comment from BritsOnPole:

The FT was reporting today that one of the organisations due to get shares in the Donington holding company was McLaren. The racing team, as it was careful to specify.

    Whoa.

  • Bassano Clapper16/10/2009 at 00:46

    Whoa.

    Hi Journeyer

    Odd news

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 00:47

    Odd news

Very odd indeed. Are they the type to do investments? And they actually prefer Donington over Silverstone?

If McLaren are willing to buy, surely there are other companies willing to do it too. Donington may get saved just yet.

  • Bassano Clapper16/10/2009 at 00:49

Or be used as a cheap test track

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 00:50

Or be used as a cheap test track

I guess that's possible. But if they'll get the money needed to become a cheap test track, that's also the money that will allow them to take over the British GP.

Well, the deadline is now a legal deadline (and it's not one set by Bernie, for once), so surely it has to arrive now?

  • jackie/saltire16/10/2009 at 00:53

    Hey salti. Up so late?

  • Bassano Clapper16/10/2009 at 00:57

The backers of Donington Park have had to sweeten the terms of a £145m funding package it needs to stage next year's British Grand Prix in a bid to tempt potential investors.

    Redacted.

no need for that. we all make mistakes, no-one's going to hold it against ya.

it's a great post, which people should read.

  • Bassano Clapper16/10/2009 at 00:58

Thanks Bassano. BTW you can register on FT for free and have access to up to 10 articles per month I think it is for free. After that you have to pay.

    That's what I do

  • Kathi16/10/2009 at 00:59

In fact, it making me question my commitment to the site

    Why that?

  • jackie/saltire16/10/2009 at 00:59

    Why that?

    better off without me

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 01:00

At that point, Donington Holdings, parent company of the racetrack, will issue £25m in new preference shares, of which £20.75m will go to shareholder Paul White with the rest split between Kevin Wheatcroft, Donington founder, McLaren, the racing team, and SSG, which would handle debenture sales.

    Interetins mix of people. But...

Donington, which will conduct investor roadshows today, has been working on finding a third party to provide a £12m line of credit, which is expected to be covered by the proceeds made from ticketing and hospitality.

They're still short one major investor. If they're only looking for the one investor, and they have 10 days to do it, they have a chance.

  • Bassano Clapper16/10/2009 at 01:00

    Why that?

    better off without me

    Nonsense

  • me16/10/2009 at 01:00

    better off without me

that is so not true jackie!

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 01:01

Whaaat? No way. You're a pillar of the site. :)

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 01:01

    Interetins mix of people. But...

    I meant interesting. Gah. :D

  • jackie/saltire16/10/2009 at 01:02

that is so not true jackie!

I'll hopefully get over the shame by morning.. the slamming the computer shut whilst speaking to Mav .. hmm, we'll see (that's another apology I need to write)

  • jackie/saltire16/10/2009 at 01:05

They're still short one major investor. If they're only looking for the one investor, and they have 10 days to do it, they have a chance.

Silly question time, is Donington likely to provide better racing or a better fan experience if it does get the gig. The atmosphere at Silverstone must be hard to beat.

There's a lot of love for Silverstone but the British fans would be overjoyed just to have a race I think

  • me16/10/2009 at 01:07

I'll hopefully get over the shame by morning.. the slamming the computer shut whilst speaking to Mav .. hmm, we'll see (that's another apology I need to write)

i appreciate, that having put effort into something and being proud that it's done, only to have realise an error is very tough. but it's the kind of thing that you won't do twice.

if it helps, i recall the first mini-series or two that christine did, nearly killing her, because in every episode she put out someone picked a hole or three. and they were right to pick holes, because facts were incorrect, but fixing audio files is so damn hard that it took quite some persuading to motivate the poor lady to do another one.

now though, it's fine, right? and it's the same with blogging. don't give up.

That's true but I must admit I'm not overjoyed at the prospect of an hour long walk to the circuit after getting abandoned by public transport arangements

  • Kathi16/10/2009 at 01:08

I'll hopefully get over the shame by morning..

There is nothing to be ashamed of. I haven't caught up to everything yet but you just forgot a race or something right? There are people being paid that make much worse mistakes. The great thing about blogs is that someone will post a comment pointing it out and you can correct it (and picking out mistakes is much easier than actually writing something worthwhile). I can understand you want to be perfect but that's impossible to archive and people don't like perfectionist much either ;)

*from the depths of sleep* http://gulfnews.com/sport/motorsport/i-have-highest-praise-for-abu-dhabi-1.512348 Interesting interview with Bernard

The FT was reporting today that one of the organisations due to get shares in the Donington holding company was McLaren. The racing team, as it was careful to specify.

The teamn have no need to expend their cash reserves ahead of a major restructuing.

I must be dreaming, that makes absoloutley no sense

    better off without me

That makes even less, you are awesome, dont let a mistake or 2 get you down

  • me16/10/2009 at 01:20

fixing audio files is so damn hard that it took quite some persuading to motivate the poor lady to do another one.

i should say christine may not appreciate me bringing that up, so let's offer some balance...

a week before our first live debrief, we realised that i may not have the ability to speak out loud in actual coherent sentences. we'd done live videos before, but i never had to speak into a microphone, it was always christine.

recording debriefs offline was easy(ier) because i could work out the point i was aiming for and actually to get to that point in under a minute(ish). in a live situation i basically ran out of talent and it was looking to be a disaster.

because we'd bought equipment and worked specifically on a live show format i spent a whole week feeling awful, but christine kicked me up the bum and set me straight and we did a live show that wasn't completely terrible. mostly i was lacking confidence (and still some talent), but that's why you have people around to support you.

i am in awe of all bloggers who blog on their own, i have no idea how they keep it up.

of course, he tried to write the rules in a way so that as many people as possible will have a chance of winning up to the last races. And I think he succeeded. I just liked the stock market :)

  • Journeyer16/10/2009 at 01:30

Meanwhile, STILL no Japan race edit. I'm shocked - they've had two whole weeks to finish it...

and I liked having 9 drivers. There have been some people complaining this year that the races are boring but they weren't really for me. I had my nine drivers to keep tap on and also the 9 drivers of my closest rivals. I had this list with the drivers of the top5 and every time one of theirs fell down the order I had something to cheer and scratched them off the list. Made this year much more entertaining. :D

I'm actually surprised I'm doing this well in the 2010 rules. I'm still afraid you'll mount a comeback though and suddenly pop up in the top 3. You did make up 3 places in Japan, after all...

I thought there would be no-one here when I popped back in but I had nearly 100 comments in the last hour.

I am surprised about McLaren being involved with Donington. I wonder how long they have been involved.

    Jackie,

PF would not be better off without you. So you made a mistake. We all do. I wrote a post 5 races into the 2008 season explaining in detail why kimi and Massa would be the lead Ferrari driver in the championship. It was all wonderfully logical and perfect. unfortunately neither of the drivers read it and I ended up looking like an idiot. It happens.

Anyone who is prepared to express an opinion or put up a post is occasionally going to get it wrong but that doesn't mean they shouldn't do it. None of us would b having this discussion now if the only people blogging were those that had never made a mistake.

  • Kathi16/10/2009 at 01:52

I have manly manflu over here, hence despite being on holiday being up at 5am.

I am going through tissues like there is no tomorrow. I have developed a new system using the old box to temporarily store the tissues in so that they don't get messy on the one hand or rather so I don't have to go to the bin every time.

    Here's a picture to explain:

Not sure... I'm getting it printed today... It's 325 pages of A4 (double spaced for ease of editing). But I think I'm going to go for double sided so that my readers can carry it around with them!

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2009 at 07:07

    For sure - 0

Average words per page - 223.4 (but it's double spaced)

Here's an out there stat. If you include all of the words from the Japan Live Comments (which includes everyone's name each time which they don't have to write again, and the time etc). Then the book is 1.51 times as long as all of the live comments from the race in words.

Just had another thought - a book written on Google Wave?

Well that I imagine will happen a lot. Wave would be really handy for what I'm about to do. And while I'm on wave Google still haven't given me any invites so wave is essentially useless at the moment to me :(

  • Christine16/10/2009 at 07:40

    Morning all.

Also: Well done Alex! Happy birthday Jon!

  • Rich16/10/2009 at 07:41

Kubes has been talking about next year, which is hardly surprising given this year's lack of results. He specifically identified that the team needed to be looking for an experienced team mate for him.

“I think there are a few names who are quite experienced that Renault is looking at for next year,”

    BYE BYE Romain

He went on to say he would not influence the decision but actually he really really does want to...

“I will not try to have any influence on my team mate for next year. I have my personal preferences but this is only because of private personal relationships,”

Which drivers have experience that are unlikely to be retained or are still looking for a drive? Rubens is the most experienced and has admitted to talks with Williams (despite Frank's open criticism of his blah blah blah outburst), Jarno (an indecently fast qualifier that turns the race into mayhem with the Trulli Train), Nick (Robert's team-mate this year and driver who finishes more F1 races than anyone else in the history of the sport) and who else (Sato? Davidson?)

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2009 at 07:45

Also: Well done Alex! Happy birthday Jon!

Thanks for the shooing this week :)

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2009 at 07:56

“I will not try to have any influence on my team mate for next year. I have my personal preferences but this is only because of private personal relationships,”

Well he wants Kovi doesn't he?

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2009 at 07:57

Am very pleased to have worked out how to make Pages use British English. Grrr!

  • Rich16/10/2009 at 08:01

Well he wants Kovi doesn't he?

We do not know that Kovy will not remain at McLaren. I am still not sure that Kimi is completely right there (money, attitude and history) - I would not hire him due to the inevitable destablizing influence. Does Kovy qualify as an experienced driver, I guess from Kubes perspective yes but otherwise only three seasons.

  • Rich16/10/2009 at 08:04

If I were Renault I would not be looking at Heikki simply to distance myself as far as possible from Briatore, the same would apply to Grosjean.

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2009 at 08:06

I am only saying who I think Robert wants.

I don't think Kimi at McLaren will be anywhere near as distablising as Alonso at Ferrari.

  • Rich16/10/2009 at 08:19

I am only saying who I think Robert wants.

Are they close friends? I read it somewhat different - Robert is not known to be very good at developing a car. Sure he tests but Nick has really done the bulk of the testing development including extensive testing together with Christian of the KERS (Robert had very little drive time with it). Even when Nick was with Jordan he was able to develop the car to score points. Further Frank Williams has commended Nick on his ability to set up and develop a car. This is what is hurting Toro Rosso. Rubens is also good at set-up and I actually think this is going to hurt Brawn next year. On paper Nico should be very good (has good technical understanding but it is also feel). I think Robert was actually referring to his current team mate.

Kimi is not a team player - period. McLaren like team players - period. Sure Ferrari are out of their minds dumping Kimi for Fernando - but it is to pacify their Italian fans who do not like Kimi - it is not a racing decision its a marketing decision. In fact Robert would have been better - he also speaks Italian.

You have to look at their history and make a decision on that rather than the election campaign. Same with politicians. Ignore everything they say during the campaign and the build up to it and look at what they have done before and make your decision on that

Well then it's still Ari, isn't it?

I guess I can draw an analogy with myself - in a recent argument I ended up resorting to stooping down to the other person's level in order to make my point. Does it make me a worser person because the only option was to fight fire with fire?

I'm going out to a gig tonight (idlewild)... But the problem with going out at this time of year is the weather. If it was genuinely winter then I'd have to take a coat, but now I could just about get away without it. The problem is that if you take a coat to a gig what do you do with it?

    i would brave the cold.

  • Jon Waldock16/10/2009 at 15:31

    ...your birthday?

thats very true! it's not been a bad day, but a tad boring!

i could see through the gatehouse window earlier that i had lots of post....turns out it was the martin hines book i'd ordered, an nhs letter and a staples letter....hmmm

    Wear loads of blue shirts!!

Actually... go for without a coat and be brave. Once you get in there it'll be worth it.

Someone bought me a Woolworth's own brand electric screwdriver come rechargeable drill many years ago.It can't have cost much but after many years service it finally died.

So, unable to live without such a tool anymore I treated myself to a rather expensive Bosch. It. Is. Utter. Rubbish. In fact, the completely dead Woolworths one would still give it a run for its money it's that bad. Go figure.

Sorry, felt I had to vent my frustration over this piece of junk. In fact, I still feel annoyed and I might go and hit it with a hammer a few times or something. Imaginative suggestions for destroying it are welcome.

  • me16/10/2009 at 15:39

did i miss the talk about this: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/14/applause-for-finland-first-country-to-make-broadband-access-a-legal-right/

"Starting July 2010, every person in Finland will have the right to a one-megabit broadband connection as an intermediate step, says the Ministry of Transport and Communications. By the end of 2015, the legal right will be extended to an impressive 100 Mb broadband connection for everyone."

    that settles it, we're moving!

And there I was feeling like 4:07pm was inordinately late to be still in the office (probably because it's 15 minutes later than I've ever needed to be in there for previously...)

I'm not even sure that's a complete confirmation from AS's perspective. It certainly isn't from mine. I regard AS as being one step up from La Marca - and at least three steps down from an authoritative source.

It's a tough one, but I'm picking Suzuka. It beats Interlagos in terms of quantity and quality. Not only did it bear witness to 10 title deciders, they were mostly epic too. Who could forget Senna and Prost colliding in 1989 and 1990, Damon Hill's tearful victory in 1996, Schumacher stalling in 1998, then gaining the ultimate glory for Ferrari in 2000? These, and many other memories, are the reasons why I choose Suzuka.

It hasn't held a snail race yet, let alone a Grand Prix.

  • Lukeh16/10/2009 at 18:50

after thinking about today's earlier discussion, I'm worried about Alex. He wore a blue shirt without a pocket on it and I fear he is regretting this choice at the Idlewild gig.

You couldnt race snails on an F1 track, it wouldnt meet the minimum snail saftey standards!

Hello all, just catching up with Free Practice on the red button. Was not able to watch live as I have been cleaning my lounge. When I say cleaning I mean taking everything out, washing walls, skirting, sofas & floor then moving all furniture, books, computer, tv etc back into the room & connecting it all up again. I ache but it's all very clean :)

  • Nick16/10/2009 at 19:31

A1GP may be in trouble with ferrari over its engines

Jo has mentioned it before, but now ferrari have admitted there is no formal agreement in place http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/16/ferrari-talks-about-a1gp/

No agreement... so it was a one-year deal?

No agreement... so it was a one-year deal?

Well it was probably for longer, but if they havent paid its likely to be void?

Seems more like the latter sadly. Max had a good point when he pointed out that Vatanen was keen to have his backing himself

still, i dont want to bad mouth a charity, but surely the money could be donated anyhow?

i think the ideal podium is Rubens winning (so he can win his home gp - a nice compromise ;) ) Jenson P2 so he is on the podium and wins...and Brawn collect the championship with a 1-2 and someone in third :) of course it wont happen, but i can dream :D

According to Ask Oxford genuous does not exist. Ingenuous comes from the Latin ingenuus meaning native, inborn

Genuous is slang meaning both genuine and generous, so no

Did you know that the first aid advice concerning hyperventilation has changed in the last three years? Apparently people weren't using paper bags to control breathing correctly. Now first aiders are supposed to model normal breathing and encourage people who are hyperventilating to copy them...

Hyperventilating when you don't mean to or have complete control over it (which covers most instances of hyperventilation) is bad. It's possible to get into considerable respiration difficulties if it continues for too long at any one time.

The sort of controlled hyperventilation which is really just there to make sure you completely empty and fill your lungs is another matter entirely. Though my coaches called it "controlled breathing" or something like that.

  • Nick16/10/2009 at 21:57

People will buy them (No i wasnt tempted honest, ok well maybe just a little, no no i wasnt)

But i dont think it will be enough

If you can watch it, please download the video that's on the drop, i don't think it converted properly but you should watch it...

What you need to know is that it's still going on and won't be fixed until morning!!

We've muted it with bog roll as best we can but it's still hearable....

Will talk to y'all over the weekend.

    Is that wise?

  • startledbunny16/10/2009 at 23:03

I hear the alarm! Dougie, who is sat 30 miles away, is sending the nurse over.

No! When I was in halls in '99/'00 the fire alarms went off all the time... VERY loud, literally made the heart skip

I remember that from friends' uni stayovers. When socks over the smoke alarm was a common occurance and occasionally people standing outside in their pyjamas waiting for the fire crews
