Hi there! Hope your week is going well? Mine is fine, thank you.
I do hope you are looking forward to the Spanish Grand Prix – VivaF1 have a great Spanishy GP preview thingy – which James Allen also admits might be quite exciting (I’m linking to the post because it has some great stats, BTW). Renault have a comical preview to their GP, while Lotus have some notes to share. BadgerGP have taken a look at the Top 5 Spanish GP’s (there’s some corkers in there!) while the FIA have suddenly decided (in the hope to slow down Red Bull) to ban blown diffusers – but not in Spain, according to Jonny Noble. F1 Minute have news about Pirelli tweaking the tyres and also have a fab new logo, so check that out too.
Adrian Sutil is in a spot of bother… and it sounds like Agent Caine and his sunglasses might be popping over for a visit. But like all good CSI Episodes, he protests his innocence and vows to clear his name. Sounds like he could do with a lawyer…
The Silverstone Wing opened today. An odd name and a weird looking building, but who cares so long as Bernie likes it and stops threatening to take away the British GP? Here’s another view of it from the air by Cooperman. While we are on the subject of aerial photos, check out the latest from Austin, Texas…
Gary Anderson has a great article on how the rear wing works with the DRS – basically it says that when the DRS is deactivated there is a short pause before the airflow reattaches itself. There is a compromise to be made between a DRS that gives a better advantage and a rear wing that is more stable and consistent. The Mercedes is designed to use the DRS so well that it suffers because of this, while Red Bull have the balance just right.
Some interviews for you now. An unusually heartfelt one from Adrian Newey, where he reveals he almost quit after Senna's death and will probably not want to see the movie (but at least he can choose not to). And RichardsF1 has a great interview with Louise Goodman, which I really enjoyed reading too. Minus points from me for not liking German food though!
Joe Saward has a post on an FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy session (big mouthful), which is more about track time this time around. Alex Wurz will be offering tips, and has already made some amusing observations…
Make sure you check out Christine’s Driver and Team Rankings this week as there are plenty of cool links to check out there too!
Christine’s also been blogging about pies and found a cool trippy video about pendulums – seriously, I saw so many shapes in that video!
Will Buxton has been blogging about a bad customer service experience – and it’s a shocking read. I do hope he gets the matter sorted as he’s been properly conned I reckon!
Here’s a great mashup of two fun games – Portal Tetris! What’s your best high score? ;)
Speaking of video games, a classic time waster is being revamped and is making a comeback! Oh my!!!
Want to see a mega Doctor Who Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey important events graph? Thought so…
Here’s another great infographic about the story of Skype – many of us have been asking why Microsoft paid so much for it. This will explain why :)
Some Sidepodspace for you – it was one of the last shuttle launches the other day (I get confused, because they keep telling me each one is the last for a different reason), so here are some pics of it to enjoy.
Speaking of artwork, I found a great online portfolio of racing car paintings for you – they’re compelling to say the least!
Finally, here’s your song of the day. Lukeh has been filling his posterous with a 30-day song challenge, and he’s almost at the end. I quite like the song he picked too!
So that’s all from me. I do hope you have a great day today and let us know what you are up to in the comments. Why not share a funny story or positive thought you have had for the day? We all come here to have a good time and to be entertained in some way, shape or form, so let’s all be nice and positive and constructive in the comments so that people feel welcome and want to keep coming back. And if you are lurking, please say hello – we won’t bite, honest!
Remember – smiles earn the miles :D

hello all
Hello!
Hello.... You back up here for the Audience?
The Audience? What's that?
The Audience with Joe, in Montreal.
I'm not going to be able to go to that. For one thing, I can't afford to go to Canada and for another I'd need to have a lot of time that weekend in front of a screen to live-comment the 24H Le Mans.
i have put my bet on Heikki for points. He is paying less than in turkey :( i also discovered i can bet on a particular driver being caught speeding in the pitlane heh
I bet that doesn't pay out too often...
Hello, All(^o^)

Good to hear!
Well it looks like you had a great holiday!
I know I don't comment much anymore but come back Mr C ...pleeeeeeeease
Very nice daily Gavin, loving all the linkies
I had indeed, something I needed for years :-)
Mooorning :)
I am not nick :D
That's good to know - morning to you both!
Hehe Nick's at work. I have his iPad
Oh I see!
I'm letting myself off. I'm melting my brain with a stats assignment....
Something about scratch cards and a supermarket. I guess I'm doing something daft. I can't get to any of the multiple choice answers :(

A-C-B-A-D...
Adam Hay-Nicholls apparently saw some stuff going on in the club where the incident with Eric Lux took place: http://www.metrof1.com/blogs/metrof1/2011/05/sutil-scandal-i-suppose-im-witness-x.html
Full disclosure: he writes for a Group Lotus Magazine and is on that side of the Lotus argument. Not that I think it matters much in this case but what he saw was interesting...
he did not really see much, did he ?
He saw Lux getting escorted out and Hamilton sticking around I suppose. Those who were in there aren't saying much either, mind.
Hehehe thanks :)
Might leave that until a bit later on...
he only realized it was Lux after reading about the incident and hasn't seen Sutil at all.
from the rest of what he says it looks like Hamilton was somewhere near the mess but once it was clear that there isn't going to be any mass mayhem he went on with partying
I find that most interesting. I would have just cleared off if it was me.
I wouldn't, its not like its going to happen again, and if he did people would be saying he had to leave because he did something
Moorning me
Thats a fair point. But I wouldn't be in the mood to keep partying either way...
that depends on what was happening around and what one saw ... he may not have seen anything just his bodyguards decided to rush him away after noticing something
I was at the party back in 2007 that time Hamilton was just about beginning his F1 career but already that time he was surrounded by bodyguards at the party (unlike all the other drivers present...)
morning all.
what goes on?
shocking, I just realized my mobile provider kind of forgot to charge me data roaming fees for last 3 months. I think I am going to keep my mouth shut and not to complain about their stupid online payment platform that only works in IE ... :-)
sweet
:)
My carrier has never registered me using any data. at all. ever.
Keeping mum and never changing my package as long as it lasts!
yes, especially considering that I was online almost non stop during several of my trips ...
Until they realise and send you a huge bill!
One thing that does surprise me a little about Hay-Nicholl's article, was that technically being a witness, he published a post on it.
I suppose it doesn't matter until Sutil is charged?
I have a 1gb allowance which i doubt i ever go over, but they send me a bill saying i have used 0kb and 0% of my allowance every month
Although this bit made me laugh out loud:
"I remember it happened to Christian Klein once, in Malaysia. He tripped and crashed onto a table of champagne flutes, taking a few cuts to the torso. But Christian being Christian, he was too trashed to notice."
Does it even matter then?
Good point. Would he have to take the article down if they do press charges?
I don't know. I assumed that witness couldn't be published why a case is proceeding. Suppose it might depend on the local laws though.
I think that only applies to victims, as they can be accused of prejudicing a judge or jury.
Fair enough
The accused could of course injunct a witness against speaking publicly, but as far as i know its not a requirement.
Otherwise the news would be quite blank
True, but everything we've read so far has been more rumour and conjecture than solid news

Yup.

Oh, but it feels so much better when you hand it in 100% done
:)
Definatly not!
That man be frazzled soon.
I like this answer bestest! I'm going for a swim :D

Boooooo!
You cant go for a swim yet, the pool will be in the sun for at least another 30 mins!

Am I the only person slightly unnerved when the answers aren't properly spread across the options. It makes me think they're all wrong
You have to record answers in blocks of 5. One of these blocks has 4 of the same letter. Surely this must be wrong!
trick question?
Interestingly, last night I watched the Oulton Park F3 race from MotorsTV - it was interesting to catch it from such a different perspective (plus I accidentally ended up on TV twice).
I got a little annoyed though - they basically showed nearly all of the sprint race that offered only half points, but only showed about 2 mins of the 40 minute feature race that offered full points.
Odd.
Wouldn't have thought so, given that it was published under UK law. Especially since he doesn't mention the critical moment, only some of the consequences, and the only detail that is likely to affect a jury's opinion regarding Sutil is one that even Adrian pretty much says happened (i.e. Eric got injured).
Of course
Me too!
Looking for jobs while attempting to remember where I left my bookkeeping homework.
Oh sounds like a barrel of laughs indeed
It will be if it's still missing by afternoon, seeing as all my notes for my classes are with said homework!
Oh dear
Finished! Only guessed at one in the end. Not bad going. Off out to find veggie BBQ food....

That is so cool.
No more so than usual. But then my PC is a beast. It literally needs restraining, else it overcooks itself!
Hmmm... mine's a work PC, so it's been around a while, but ever since the latest update, it's been a snail. All other programmes crawl when I've iTune on now

Morning guys :)
Morning Lukeh
Hey man - See the Portal link yet? :D
By the Gavin,
Nice daily
:)
Thanks man!
Have you guys seen @BenConsty's tweets?
Just like A1GP!
Am just going through the links now, Portal tetris is just awesome. :D
Oh God, S/L must be on the verge of collapsing. Gut says teams have pulled out.
Well Ben is ahead of the website. I never really understood the football club idea - but I loved A1GP so I like this idea!
I am guessing they were paying the teams and decided it wasnt bringing in the fans enough to justify it
It's fine if the racing and the talent is good, but with the amount of race cancellations S/L has had this year, it is a worrying turn of events.
ping http://amysrunning.posterous.com/week-9-day-1
27 paying customers to the S/L race in Silverstone last year
hahaha
Almost there!
Seriously. Nearly all of 1000-ish strong crowd were guests, apparently.
One of my friends has just finished week 1, she found it hard but seeing me getting there is inspiring her to keep going. Just like you did for me! The never ending cycle of C25K :D
I did have an idea for this year's Children in Need thing-a-mabob, but then quickly concluded that it was the dumbest thing I'd ever come up with
Fabulous! I hope you're convincing her to blog it too :)
she is very anti blog, she keeps asking me how I'm doing yet refuses to read my blog which would tell her!
Boo.
You need to print and bind your blog. That's the only way Lukeh reads the internet these days ;)
I don't understand how I have a friend who is not permanently attached to the internet because I don't trust those kind of people.
Corrected. :D
So Superleague is no longer supported by the FCs? Are they supported by the FAs?
I'll need to check it out at lunch, but it sounds like the entire football dealie is gone
The name is vague enough for them to get away with it, though.
True. Superleague could apply to band of elite super villains, intent on finally ridding the world of Batman
Journeryer, whats a Kabayan? my boss just called me one and told me it was phillipino!
Kabayan in English translates to "fellow man", or more simply, "fellow". It implies that you are equals. :)
It's very Filipino. :D
Speaking of which, is your boss a Filipino? :)
Oh dear. Too many formulae?
That would make for colourful liveries!
That would make for colourful liveries!
I really like that idea! :D
Great

When has an extra top end Formula worked outside of F2 though? Even British F1 collapsed in the early '80's due to lack of interest and quality drivers.
Superleague drivers are rarely good enough to stir the soul and get behind. For example, it's difficult to get the British public excited about Wrexham FC in the same way they may be excited by Man United.
hehe, no he is from scotland
I wonder who taught him the word, though. :D
Afternoon
Hi Mav
Hehehe!
Im about to hand my notice into work. How exciting!

I hope they look suitably disappointed
Hope it goes well!

Do we have any BBQ experts? I've had to buy my own veggie stuff for BBQ. It's frozen. Should I defrost it now or put it on frozen?
I'd imagine that, given a BBQ is the dodgiest way of cooking something ever, that defrosted is better.
Mmm, I planned on having a BBQ Sirloin tonight. Good job it's pre cooked then!
it's usually better to defrost stuff first, at least that's what I do.
Hehehe I'm glad I don't eat meat. I'd be the one in the corner with the food probe!
I BBQ meat all the time, never had anyone get sick! ;)

Thank you. I guess given that it's already going to end up burnt on the outside and raw in the middle, I best not encourage it
That's the main reason to do it... I mean it's veggie so you won't kill yourself. But this will taste much better :)
Oh I dunno. If killer tomatoes can have their own movie, then carrots can be positively lethal.
Having read Will Buxton's complaint post, I remembered this little nugget about my first “A Clockwork Orange.”
As I'm sure some of you know, the film was pulled in many places shortly after its release by Kubrick himself (not banned as many assume); however after Kubrick died, a number of cinema’s started doing little “Kubrick season’s” – even my little dot of a town on the eastern side of Ireland had a Kubrick season.
Of course, when I say a Kubrick season, I really mean we only got “A Clockwork Orange” and with few other films booked, our Oscar Cinema decided to show A Clockwork Orange every night, twice-per-night for three weeks. Having not seen the film at this stage (I was a curious boy of 18), I finally caught it on the second week of its re-release in a dingy little 100-capacity screen room.
Thing is, I was the only person that showed up – and apparently only one of a few that showed up to the “Kubrick Season” for the duration.
It is quite a staggering piece of work, but what made it better on this occasion was the fact that I was completely alone in the cinema that night.
To be in a fairly bare, darkened room, alone amongst friendless ripped cinema seats is to this day one of the eeriest experiences of my entire life.
For every creeped out moment, occasionally I’d look over my shoulder – just in case… You never know, small towns can be strange too. This feeling of oddity was accentuated by the projectionist – a friend of mine from school – who would pop in every 20 minutes or so and ask in a whisper if I needed anything.
A brief nod of “no thanks” was enough of a signal, yet as he closed the door slowly, I could still see him peering through crack while the ageing hinges creaked ominously.
Proper small local cinema and all that that…
A few weeks ago, I watched “2001: A Space Odyssey” at the South Bank, with the soundtrack performed live by an orchestra. Awesome stuff indeed – Kubrick knew how to do epic and he did so over and over again.
However, I don’t think any feeling will match that night in the local Oscar Cinema. One thing's for certain - I'm not sure Christine would like the film at all.
You're certain you're not sure?
It can be a bit... heavy. Just a guess from some of the other films you've watched.
Just seemed like an odd sentence.
"A Clockwork Orange" is especially hard going.
I actually saw a Clockwork Orange on Laserdisc imported from the states a few years before Kubrick died... but your story reminded me of this little nugget (as you put it :) )
Interestingly I saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which actually was banned when after the reprint was done several local councils consented to show the film by using their own release laws. Camden was one of the two councils that did this. A few months later it was reclassified to 18 but I didn't know that it was going to happen. I had wanted to see the movie for a long while, but nobody wanted to come with me, so I went alone.
When I entered the cinema I was alone and I thought that was going to be quite scary. But then another man came into the cinema walked past me and sat in the seat behind me. He had the whole empty cinema to choose from but he was right behind me. I thought about moving, but then I worried... what if I move and he follows me... So I stayed put.
It certainly added a certain something to the experience!
I think I would have moved and sat behind him.
I saw one of the Star Trek films when it first came out and there were only 8 of us in the cinema which was odd but not as scary as the Texas Chain Saw Massacre or A Clockwork Orange.
My parents saw it during it's very short release, completely by accident

You mean we're going to have to disguise the panda as a horse?
as a guide dog
At least you can put a jacket, hat and sunglasses on panda
If there's going to be a whole trench coat thing with one of us underneath the other I would like to go on top because a) I have a human head and b) I'd rather not be crushed to death by a panda thanks
Fine as long as you can steer a panda
I might need a rudder

Yes!!
Today is clearly planking day in Indycar. The practise session is stopped due to mist and someone just planked on the yard of bricks and got one of the drivers (Hinchcliffe I think) to to take a photo.
:D
they've certainly got the edge over F1 on this one. F1 gets far too wound up about the angle of the chamfer that can be applied to the edge of a plank
:D
Adrian Newey's plank could be epic
Hinchcliffe is clearly into planking today
http://lockerz.com/s/102730140
Session to re-start in 10-15 minutes if there is no more precipitation
I thought he had a garden rake instead?
That's actually very impressive
Nope. Apparently Newey's plank doesn't lie still - his planks reshapes the physics of the immediate surroundings to his body shape
Newey's plank is a mobius strip
Maybe I'm boring but I find the planking phenomenon quite dull
That exists only in four dimensions
You can make a Mobius strip with a belt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Möbius_strip
you'd risk turning your trousers inside out
Anything for a good plank

How can it not be? It's lying down!
Not a lot of skill required.

Christine is getting in on the act I think... http://twitter.com/#!/sidepodcast/status/70958796746399744
Does it count if there is not a photo?
Good point
Mr C!
It becomes allegedly planking
maybe there is a photo but they've taken out a superinjunction
Steven, did you see Pat's RT earlier?
@Virgin_Galactic: WOW -SpaceShipTwo's First Feathered Flight - http://tinyurl.com/3hb5huj Mildy jaw dropping (via @PatWotton)
I missed that. I had no idea they were due to do a feathered flight with the new ship
Still got it in a tab for a Daily-mention, amazing machine, looks very unsafe though!
It doesn't fill you with confidence..
Burt Rutan makes some good looking aircraft
Cool as eff!
Want to know how it stops on the runway though. Puny wheels won't have decent brakes and couldn't make out any reverse thrust, though I presume it had some
I think it glides in like the shuttle. THe only power I know of is the rocket behind the fuselage
I mean after touch down. Landing speed must still be in excess of 100 knots
Must just be brakes.
Did you see how small those wheels were. Bigger brakes on a drum shodden mini
Maybe they have a magic paddle too
I know they are small but as far as I know it only has rocket power and there is no way they have enough gimbal angle to aim it forward
Yeah, I guess it depends on the landing speed and length of the runway
I assume the runway at White Sands is a monster
Is this a Virgin franchise praising the BA app?
Anyone else have e-boarding tickets?
@MarussiaVirgin: Blimey. Just hold your iPhone with boarding pass over the scanner and the doors open. That IS easy boarding! No human contact, very quick!
I guess it could be an email or PDF of the boarding pass from anyone
Holy ****
Arie Luyendyk Jr takes planking at Indianapolis... probably a bit too far

Hah. :) He's been around British mechanics for a while...
yes, rather similar to the death in Australia http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13389207
I guess. It sounds funny in my head as I can hear it in his Finnish accent
perhaps he puts on a Dick Van Dyke mockney accent
That would deserve a lot of points :)
Goid bless ya Moikey Gascoyne
calling it a night

Night Mav
Am going to sleep too - first F1 Archive podcast nearly finished. I can safely say I do not possess a radio voice.
