Hello and welcome to Thursday. It's usually a horrid day but I'm sure today will be completely different because it is a certain Timo Glock's birthday! Happy Birthday Mr Glock. I hope that RG has bought his favourite driver a present, it seems only fair. Now you have wished Glock a happy birthday, your day is complete, but I would just like to share some of the other things we're talking about first:

  • Ollie has been blogging like a demon recently, and posted an interesting article about the possibility of the record books being changed this year. I hadn't really given it any thought but we have seen youngest drivers and 100th GP winners over the last few years, so I wonder what we'll find in 2010.
  • Over on VivaF1, Maverick has a post discussing the potential introduction of the 107% rule - how it would work and whether it would be a useful thing or not. I have never seen such a rule in practice, so I'm not sure about it, but head on over and leave your thoughts.
  • Finally, Lukeh has been keeping his eye on all sorts of news outlets to get information about the new F1 game, and he has collated it all here with his initial impressions. Some of the career aspects do look very interesting, but from a personal point of view, I just wish you didn't have to actually get a car round a track. It's quite impossible.

That should do it for now. I hope everyone is having an okay week so far, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

Not that I want to give them the satisfaction of even saying its name, but the top 5 of the non-christines-rankings-rankings....haven't changed at all.

Apparently Jenson's still the best driver in the world, even though he got owned by Lewis #sorrylou.

Mark Webber however is better than Lewis, which is nice to know. How many WDC has mark won again? oh yeah, that would be none, and how many races?

Oh and I'm sure Felipe will be glad to hear that Buemi, Gabriele Tarquini, Jules Bianchi (GP2 driver) and Danica Patrick (amongst others) are all better than him!

It's such a stupid thing, I hate it and it should just go away.

I love that they don't even mension it, a little banner on AUTOSPORT.COM and thats it.

Christines Rankings are SO much better.

Anyone would think there was a flaw in their system. They will probably want to buy Christine's algorithm soon.

Not that I've seen really. Maybe he's talking about dishes that I left when I was there..... I wouldn't be shocked if they were in the sink.

    Tradition says bride's father

  • Journeyer18/03/2010 at 02:46

There's LOTS of those here. Not to be stereotypical, but it usually happens amongst traditional-minded families.

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 02:46

Do they still have those? I am surprised anyone cares any more

Well no I certainly don't. A couple of Nick's friends have done it, but I guess it's a bit different over there with the whole jail thing.

These friends are very christian though. I'm sure it's all very embarrassing!

  • Journeyer18/03/2010 at 02:48

Well no I certainly don't. A couple of Nick's friends have done it, but I guess it's a bit different over there with the whole jail thing.

We're a very Catholic country. It doesn't stop it from happening. No jail terms involved, but it usually involves disownment and losing your share of the inheritance if you don't go with it.

  • Steven Roy18/03/2010 at 02:48

These friends are very christian though. I'm sure it's all very embarrassing!

I know that kind of religious. They don't stick to the rules any more than anyone else but they want people to think they stick to them

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 02:52

I know that kind of religious. They don't stick to the rules any more than anyone else but they want people to think they stick to them

I spent most of my teenage years playing at this. Pretty much gave it up when I went to university though. I have a lot of Christian friends though and yeah, I wouldn't have said their moral code was far removed from mine.

Listen, Kovi may be at the back of the pack now, but he's right nonetheless: People shouldn't whine about overtaking as long as officials are waving blue flags. This may be the fastest, surest way to bring excitement back to the season without redesigning the cars for smaller fuel loads.

  • Amy18/03/2010 at 07:13

Apparently the F1 is so popular this year the AGPC have added a new Webber Stand

This "surge in popularity" is ignoring the fact that last year they removed the Jones and Piquet stands of course ;)

Bassano how come you got to go even though there are strikes?

  • Bassano18/03/2010 at 09:57

Bassano how come you got to go even though there are strikes?

Well, the strikes don't start until Saturday and we have so many volunteer Cabin Crew, very little disruption is expected. As a pre-caution, I don't think tickets are being sold now for Strike Dates

Forgive me for asking, but what does one do in a strike?

Who, the customer or the employee?

    The employee on strike.

  • Bassano18/03/2010 at 10:00

    The employee on strike.

    Sit at home I guess

No idea, what happens if they are on rest in , say Sydney, cos I'm pretty sure BA won't pay for their hotel

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:01

    The employee on strike.

Refuse to work. Stand about outside with banners and signs looking angry and shouting. Sometimes people blockade access roads and stuff but that's a bit extreme and gets you arrested :P

All those striking will lose their Staff Travel benefits for life

    That's scared quite a few, I'd imagine

Two years ago we had a big nurses and preschool teachers strike here in Denmark and we had a lot of people picketing - but a lot more were criticised for 'slacking off' and taking holidays etc.

But part of that might be that it was long, drawn out and in the end those on strike were deemed to be asking too much...

  • F1Wolf18/03/2010 at 10:03

Forgive me for asking, but what does one do in a strike?

few years back the flight attendants on Cathay Pacific went on strike. They still worked, but refused to smile on flights. I am not sure what is more annoying - having the flight delayed or spending 12 hours in company of long faced crew ...

  • Bassano18/03/2010 at 10:03

    OK, I'm gonna head off

Catch you guys in a few

That's bullying though!! That's just shocking.... It's not how you resolve whatever issues have caused this.

No, it's a benefit not a contractual right

There are risking the company in many eyes

    Bye Bassano, enjoy yourself!

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:06

Yeah but as long as it's unionised, you shouldn't be able to single out some over others as long as you recognise the union. If your union votes to strike well what are you supposed to do.....

  • F1Wolf18/03/2010 at 10:06

Ah yes, that's always a great option. The work-to-rule strike.

that is what Cathay pilots used to do, and unlike the non-smiling flight attendants the work-to-rule pilots did cause some decent delays, specially by taking their time to go through the pre-flight checklists ...

  • F1Wolf18/03/2010 at 10:07

Yeah but as long as it's unionised, you shouldn't be able to single out some over others as long as you recognise the union. If your union votes to strike well what are you supposed to do.....

    quit ...

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:08

    quit ...

That's hardly realistic is it, where are you going to find another job. BA's union are crackpots in my opinion, they go way too far but if you're a union member, it's a big thing to work through a strike. In theory you're striking for a reason.

But then you lose your right to strike and the employer can take advantage?

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:10

    Yeah, it's not that simple.

Sorry I was unclear. I agree with you. You shouldn't have to choose between being a member of your union and keeping your job with it's current benefits.

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:12

My employer don't even recognise a union so that's great....

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:17

Aargh there a bit of rough apostrophe action there.... I think Nick is contagious.

  • F1Wolf18/03/2010 at 10:19

But then you lose your right to strike and the employer can take advantage?

well I must say I was not aware that to have the right to strike one has to first join some union and pay fee etc . going on strike isn't much en vogue over. when people think they can get better off somewhere else, they simply quit. of course there are the exemptions like the before mentioned Cathay Pacific :-)

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 10:20

In the UK your strike is illegal unless it's been voted for by union members. People who aren't in the union aren't allowed to strike. If they do, it just counts as unauthorised absence, you'll be sacked.

OK, but surely there are also other ways how employee can fight for his/her legal or contractual rights without unions and strikes ...

You can try to negociate but why would your employer bother to talk to you as an individual. They'll just tell you to leave if you're not happy.

Anyways, I'm off now. Have a nice day folks :)

a book i now own on the ipod, on paper and on the mac, one sec.

  • me18/03/2010 at 11:04

so, i bought this book the other week as an iphone app. but didn't find it very easy to read:

    http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/xmpp-the-definitive-guide/id330015000?mt=8

because i needed the info, i bought it on amazon as a paperback:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/XMPP-Definitive-Real-Time-Applications-Technologies/dp/059652126X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268910140&sr=8-1

and today, as a kindle book (for no real good reason at all):

it's my most media|future|change book, and it happens to be about realtime conversations, which is very #mfc

  • Christine18/03/2010 at 11:05

Hollamby was happy with the cars first run, commenting:

“Today is purely a shakedown but the car immediately feels very solid and exceptionally well balanced on all four corners. What else can I say? It goes, it stops, it turns left and right so it's been a good first run.”

The game is finished - wasn't it supposed to be released now anyway?

  • Scott Woodwiss18/03/2010 at 13:14

Also, it's said that the demo was set to Arcade mode for the event. But there's still all these people criticising the physics and writing it off some 6 months before it's even out.

It was never supposed to be released now, Codemasters never put a set date for release. People only put a march date on it because of the new season. F1 games from Sony traditionally came out about September as well.

It's better if they wait too, you never know what can happen throughout the course of a season. Driver firings/hirings, hopefully the implementation of the 107% rule again, etc.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/03/2010 at 13:21

You watch - these weather effects will trickle down into Codemasters' other games, like the next GRID.

Actually, there's a slightly updated version of GRID that's just been released, but the PS3 version has about 10 or 11 new cars and Bathurst!

  • Scott Woodwiss18/03/2010 at 13:23

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mclmSw-jgxM

1:51 was rather pedestrian for everyone else on the race for that week. I was lucky to not get lapped in my race.

In the Skip, yea definitely. I had no problems with consistency in the Solstice.

I haven't tried out the other open wheel cars but I'm hoping they're a lot less tail happy than the Skippy is.

  • Alianora La Canta18/03/2010 at 14:04

All those striking will lose their Staff Travel benefits for life

    That's scared quite a few, I'd imagine {Comment #137}

If a trade union has called the strike and the staff member is a union member, then how is the airline expecting to enforce it without getting into legal trouble?

  • Alianora La Canta18/03/2010 at 14:10

That's hardly realistic is it, where are you going to find another job. BA's union are crackpots in my opinion, they go way too far but if you're a union member, it's a big thing to work through a strike. In theory you're striking for a reason.

    I meant quit the union, not the job {Comment #151}

If you do that, the union can sue depending on the nature of the contract with the union. In Britain, an employer is forbidden from forcing any employee to leave any union, even if the employer doesn't recognise the union. If sued by the union, the only realistic response the employee has is to sue the employer for enforcing a breach of contract... ...and I think you can see where that leads.

  • Alianora La Canta18/03/2010 at 14:12

    Sorry I was unclear. I agree with you. You shouldn't have to choose between being a member of your union and keeping your job with it's current benefits. {Comment #155}

It's especially bad when in some other instances, the only way one can keep one's job with its current benefits is by being a member of the relevant union. So there isn't even a hard-and-fast rule :(

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 14:36

Arcade mode modifies damage too? I figured it just modified the handling (as the driver was weaving through corners and such which is physically impossible)

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 14:38

I was figuring that codemasters just decided to ditch real damage like they did with their Wii version, which has hardly any damage (wings falling off, thats about it).

  • Lukeh18/03/2010 at 14:38

Arcade mode modifies damage too? I figured it just modified the handling (as the driver was weaving through corners and such which is physically impossible)

I'm assuming so anyways. Codies have been mentioning how the damage model will be a huge part of the car in terms of the damage you can take, and most of the places that reported on the game yesterday said that the game there is in arcade mode. I can't see the fully sim mode having damage as simple as that especially with Codemasters seeming so assured about it. I know the Sony games had a very simply damage system on the arcade modes, nevertheless.

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 14:42

I know the Sony games had a very simply damage system on the arcade modes, nevertheless.

F1 CE's damage wasn't bad. The only thing they really missed was motors failing. Their main shortcoming in that game was lack of actual penalties. No drive through, stop and go, etc.

Yes, it was very silly and made no sense and on Monza you'd get ghost penalties for no good reason when going through the first chicane.

Quick question about the podcasts guys....

What format are the tags in? My phone doesn't recognise Asides or Debriefs are podcasts, presumably due to the fact the darn thing will only read ID3v1 tags (assumption, I can't verify that until I get home).

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 17:19

    Just read this on crash.net:

There is also speculation that Ferrari is developing a 'B-spec' car incorporating a new, innovative diffuser – designed by former Toyota CFD guru Giuseppe Azzollini, and based upon a concept that was due to be fitted to the TF110 that never ultimately raced. Regardless of any future advances in pace and performance, though, the two scarlet machines already look to be in fine fettle indeed this year.

Bioshock 2. The original was the type of game where it had such a good story and pace to it that a sequel would do it no justice whatsoever. When they announced the sequel, where a lot of fans who were very iffy about the idea.

Luckily, from what I've just played, they mooooooooore than justified making a sequel. Such a fantastic game and story to it :D

    Wow!

  • Adie18/03/2010 at 20:09

Just been onto the Merc media site.

It saddens me to see that the BrawnGP legacy has been purged from there totally.

  • me18/03/2010 at 20:11

    no sense of history.

williams still have renault pics and bmw pics.

I fear the day Mercedes storm into my house and take away my Brawn stuff :(

  • me18/03/2010 at 20:11

williams still have renault pics and bmw pics.

hell, renault still have ING pics!

  • me18/03/2010 at 20:11

hell, renault still have ING pics!

    and flav and piquet.

  • Lukeh18/03/2010 at 20:12

That also fills me with a horrid but completely expected sense of dread that all we'll see from Merc at Goodwood is a Brawn car sprayed with Merc livery, and no Brawn on the hill :(

  • Adie18/03/2010 at 20:12

    no sense of history.

    Yeah, very 'cold'.

Slightly off topic - have you had to re-register with McLaren since their site upgrade?

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 20:12

hell, renault still have ING pics!

Do they have Benetton pics though?

    +1

I still can't believe they resprayed a BGP001 in the Merc colours for the launch.

They only made 3 of them FFS. There will NEVER be another. Just wrong.

  • Lukeh18/03/2010 at 20:14

Might not even bother with sending a car?

The Goodwood stuff said they would be there so I'm assuming they'll take something. They'd better.

  • me18/03/2010 at 20:14

yeah, they sent out new details the other day: http://twitter.com/TheFable/status/10630818368

  • Adie18/03/2010 at 20:17

yeah, they sent out new details the other day: http://twitter...le/status/10630818368

    Ah, Cheers.

My old credentials don't work (Obviously) - not too much of an issue as I re-registered with F1WE details. Not heard back for a week so was about to mail 'The Bish'

They must be up to their eyeballs in requests though so no worries.

Trying to issue 3 together but everything seems to be working against me at the moment.

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 20:31

    ahh, no. fair point.

You figure they'd want to keep that heritage though. I mean there is two extra championships in that line.

I can understand why someone like Force India couldn't care less about it's history with Jordan or Spyker, but they never won any world titles.

  • RubberGoat18/03/2010 at 20:40

  • Steven Roy18/03/2010 at 20:40

This sport has no concept of the value of its history.

I suppose the flip side of that argument is that lotus have turned up anc claimed the history of the original team and been slaughtered for it.

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 20:42

This sport has no concept of the value of its history.

Well, for certain teams I'd say that's true. Ferrari on the other hand, is very proud of the fact that they hold just about every record in the book.

  • Steven Roy18/03/2010 at 20:47

Well, for certain teams I'd say that's true. Ferrari on the other hand, is very proud of the fact that they hold just about every record in the book.

How often do they make any mention of it at a race or do anything to show it?

The only reason they have records is because they have been around as long. There are a surprising number of teams that arrived after them that did better than them during the period they were in the sport. McLaren even overtook their total number of wins record before Schumacher went there

  • RocketRedhead18/03/2010 at 20:47

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 20:49

How often do they make any mention of it at a race or do anything to show it?

Well, you'll hardly hear anything from the BBC about it because they have a heavy British bias, but on Italian media they speak quite a bit about Ferrari's heritage.

  • RocketRedhead18/03/2010 at 20:49

I am sure Ferrari have people who speak other languages that they could use to get their point across. Surely they would be better doing that than things like the horse whisperer

Robert Kubica - Renault Megane RS175 (Driver)

Vitaly Petrov - Renault Clio 197 (Driver)

Ho-Ping Tung - Renault Laguna Privilege (Test Driver)

Eric Boulier - Renault Koleos (Team Principal)

Thursdays are always my worst days too =( I'm always overloaded with work and I find myself stressing at night to make sure my people back home have my car/kart ready to go for the weekend.

  • Jim Newman18/03/2010 at 21:54

    ping: http://sidepod...d-the-hockenheimring/

Ah, my email went through =) Our servers were having problems last night and I wasn't sure if it made it as I got a bunch of random kick-back messages this morning.

  • Steven Roy18/03/2010 at 21:58

why is that? any specific reason?

A lot of people just seem to have bad Thursdays. To combat that though Christine on her personal blog has Baby Panda Thursdays so that always helps

I've finished writing my blog entry about my karting practise. I'm quite happy about it :)

    Newark NJ?

    I kart too with F125 =) {Comment #325}

Sorry, I should be more specific. This was Newark, East Midlands, England...

F125? If that's 125cc, then you're a much better karter than me (I'm still on the relatively low-power karts designed specifically for use around Newark...)

  • Alison18/03/2010 at 22:36

    almost certainly!

Ah gotcha. I was wondering if you karted with the SCCA but since you're in England it's probably not likely =)

The 125 is pretty nice, it's a shifter kart and it really makes you pay attention or it'll bite you. It's fun stuff and I've built my race schedule this year around more karting, so I'm hoping to get more use out of it this year than last.

  • Alianora La Canta18/03/2010 at 22:46

    It just seems to be many people's worst day of the week here, that or there is a Thursday vendetta going on. But it is a rubbish day really. :) {Comment #443}

Sounds like a very good kart for a true enthusiast to have. However I am neither that skilful nor in a position to pay for/maintain/accommodate something that nice; the arrive-and-drive bit is enough for me...

lol, me too... I mean, I do do that, but I have no money afterward. I'm definitely not a wealthy person by any means. I just spend most of my money not tied up in savings on motorsports, so whenever my friends call me to go to the pub, I usually have to tell them I gotta stay home and save cash =P

  • Alianora La Canta18/03/2010 at 22:52

I've just checked my e-mail and the activation e-mail from Friday for my Live Timing account has arrived. It must have had some sort of mechanical problem because it was overtaken by its team-mate e-mail despite the latter being sent two days later (after I requested it via auto-recycling e-mail).

I can only assume the FOM still uses the same e-mail program that caused Ferrari to get its race control wet-weather tyre e-mail an hour after everyone else in Japan 2007...

awww... don't let the pressure affect you, whatever happens you have so many different options to choose from as well as this. They're clearly missing out anyways, everyone who knows you and your photography knows how talented you are, yet the horrible nature that is UCAS as the interview system, pretending to understand you based on a personal statement and one meeting, is not a fair way to judge one persons ability but that's the rubbish nature of unis. You're farrrrrrr too talented with photography to allow them to affect that. Plus you've had a lovely evening, the news about southampton shouldn't ruin a good evening :)

  • lou18/03/2010 at 23:11

You should e-mail Emily Davenport and Emma and tell them you have been rejected twice and ask if their is any advice they can give you.

my textiles teacher is gonna sit down with me and go through everything. It's safe to say the whole department was shocked.. so.. hmm all i can think of is that other candidates have more of a contemporary approach to their work. Contemporary photography is favoured i think..

I'm not sure if i'd be happy telling Emma i'd been rejected twice... it's not going to give her any confidence in me, is it? Emily said she didn't do it at uni, so i'm guessing she'd say that it wasn't all over, and repeat the advice she gave me.

Demon Tweeks rules. Nothing about it is immoral ever

  • Jon Waldock18/03/2010 at 23:19

    huh?

I'm writing an essay about the effects of performance driving on the cardiovascular system. I've got to hte point about it being 60 degrees + 4 layers of nomex and so want to talk about driver cooling systems...which Demon Tweeks sell!

Demon Tweeks (2010) show many examples of driver coolingsystems etc

The tires were supposed to arrive tomorrow and I'd have to make a mad dash from when my flight lands to pick up the tires, drive like mad to my shop to pick up my spare wheels then shoot on down to my buddy's shop and beg him to work overtime to mount the tires for me.

    Oh dear.

Has anyone seen any weird documentaries lately? I'm really in the mood to watch something odd ball.

ah i wish everything in my life could go right at the same time. Have had an amazing evening at the performance, but got home to find that i've been rejected from Southampton Solent uni.. the pressure is on for my last 2 interviews...

    anyways, i hope everyone is alright. {Comment #497}

    *hug*

I was until I read that... ...what are these uni admissions experts thinking? Even if the unis are going for "contemporary", what could me more contemporary than a racing car (unless that's classed as "futuristic")?

If it eases the pressure any, the Open University does a digital photography module (T189 Digital photography: creating and sharing better images} which could help satisfy the academic side of your photography during a "gap year" and take the pressure off your other two interviews (by the look of it, it will still be possible to apply for the course after you get your replies back from the other two unis).
