Good day everyone.  How's everyone coping with the current F1 season hiatus?  Yeah, me too.  But worry not, because this channel from Justin.tv shows continuous coverage of Formula 1 races from past and present for those of you suffering from withdrawal symptoms.  The only thing is, it tends to bring up ads - both pop-up and over the screen - so you might have to either put up with it or refresh your screen a couple of times.

As I write this daily, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is in full swing.  So far I've seen Dave Gorman, Hardeep Singh Kohli, Tim Vine, Andi Osho, Andrew Lawrence, Shappi Khorsandi & Henning Wehn show their comedic talents upon the stage, and this Sunday I'll be seeing Sarah Millican & Andy Parsons at the Assembly Rooms.  If you've not had a chance to see the sights and the talents in Edinburgh, don't worry, there's always next year.  And the year after that.  And the year after that.  And the year after... well, you get the idea with that.

The good news motor racing-wise is that since the Hungarian GP at the end of July, there's been a steady stream of other motorsport events that have graced the world stage, which goes to prove that the world doesn't begin and end with F1.  The first event I've watched on TV this month was the British Touring Car Championships at a re-designed Snetterton, a circuit which lies between London and Norwich.  It's a 3-mile circuit, which brings us to the first pub quiz question of the day:

1.  Is the new Snetterton circuit longer or shorter in terms of miles/kilometres than the Spa circuit in Belgium?  Answer at the end of the Daily.

Each BTCC race meeting consists of a qualifying session on Saturday and three races over the course of Sunday afternoon.  Pole-sitter and reigning champion Jason Plato won the first race of the day but he didn't cross the line unscathed: he was involved with an incident with long-term rival Matt Neal when Plato spun him off on lap one.  There's no love lost between the two drivers, who have clashed on several occasions over their time at the Championships (maybe I'll do a montage of clips based on that rivalry one day).  Race two of the weekend adopts a reverse-grid policy, meaning the top 8 finishers in race one is swapped so that whoever finishes 8th starts on pole in race two, whoever finishes 7th starts 2nd and so on.  In this case, it was Scotland's Gordon Shedden who was victorious.  In race three, where the top eight finishers in race two is entered into a draw and whoever's name is taken out of a hat starts on pole, Mat Jackson took the spoils.  Imagine F1 adopting that qualifying system??  At the end of the race meeting, Mat Jackson leads the overall standings for the first time in his BTCC career with four rounds to go.

Also in the offing was the IZOD IndyCar Series, first in Ohio and then in New Hampshire.  Justin Wilson injured his back during the qualifying session in the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course after running wide and riding over the very nasty off-road bumps, forcing him to sit out the next few races.  New Zealand's Scott Dixon took the pole and went on to win the race, helped no doubt by overtaking his teammate Dario Franchitti of Scotland about 20 laps from the end.  The following weekend saw the IndyCars race at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway at Louden.  It was overcast with the threat of rain present throughout the day.  Eventually the race was red-flagged five laps from the end due to a pile-up caused by a damp track and Ryan Hunter-Reay was declared the winner.  Drivers and team-owners alike were very unhappy that the race was allowed to restart because of the questionable grip levels and the obvious drizzle seen on the on-board cameras.  And now for our second pub quiz question:

2.  Which ex-F1 driver will be taking part in the next two IRL races in California & Maryland in place of the injured Justin Wilson?  Answer at the end of the Daily.

And finally, by the time my next Daily is released, the F1 drought will have ended and the Belgian GP will have been and gone, which leads me to, not a pub quiz question, but a pub prediction question:

3.  Will it rain during the Belgian GP?  Answer at the end of the Daily.

So until next time, toodloo for noo.

P.S. I need a new PC.

ANSWERS:

  1. Snetterton is shorter than Spa.  Snetterton = 3 miles/4.83km, Spa = 4.35 miles/7km
  2. Giorgio Pantano, who raced for Jordan for most of 2004.
  3. Yeah, probably.

I don't have an opinion about that yet. I thought it was cool that I've spent many a Sunday there getting ice for the cool can and checking tire pressures. :)

It certainly leaves something to be desired when it leaves the line, that's for sure. Gavin is right, it is freaky to see it go with no noise.

i don't object to it. i'd imagine pitlane commentary would be much more bearable with electric cars.

I've seen the top fuel dragsters and funny cars at night. It shakes the whole place and your whole body and you see the exhaust shooting out of the headers. It's to be missed. And I can't imagine it silent. Whoa.

It would be like the karting in Birmingham which Alia organised. That sounded really odd with just tyres squealing. You got used to it but all the same, I don't know I ever could at a 'proper' track.

In terms of lack of planning it is taking a surprising amount of willpower to not suddenly go to Silverstone for the Renault thing despite the fuel cost. Need to get to a track again. Not sure I can wait for the Le Mans series in a month.

  • Pat W18/08/2011 at 00:09

Yeah they are both nearer and club events will be cheaper I'm sure. I keep forgetting to check Combe's events. Thruxton I gave up on because they can't be bothered to publish anything other than race dates, and ignore what will be there.

Part of the reason to go to Renault WSR is the other people who are going, Jackie, Mav, maybe Lou.

I'm going to the LMS anyway because last year was fun and hopefully this year McNish's car won't die in the first hour.

  • Pat W18/08/2011 at 00:11

Could go to this on Bank Holiday Monday.. http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/events/display_event.asp?EventID=287

BARC only covers Thruxton. The list for Thruxton just says "Club Cars".. could be anything.

Visiting the site reminded me of Gurston Down hillclimb.. I've never been to a hillclimb (a proper one not Goodwood) and there's one on the 28th.

  • Pat W18/08/2011 at 00:24

I think tomorrow night I'll be making a list of what's on for the rest of the year and their costs. To be fair the ticket prices aren't worth thinking about, the real cost is travel.

I forgot I'd planned to do lost of smaller events this year, that hasn't happened..yet.

Maybe I should move to Europe, the cost of a one hour flight in this country is stupid. Stuuuuupid! This may be why after 3.5 years here I have only just booked my second domestic trip.

  • Bert18/08/2011 at 00:55

For me, a 1 hour (60 minutes) flight can be a borderline decision between drive and fly. Considering door-to-door time it often comes out quite close. My 1 hour flight would be YUL-YYZ (Montreal, Toronto). If I am in the east, it's a 4.5 hour drive and the flight, security, rental, etc. is 4 hours. The extra half hour is well worth the hastle of flying. I will admit my petrol is "only" 1.35$/L

  • Bert18/08/2011 at 01:07

Yeah, that looks to be a bit of a long-haul, especially given that you don't have a car. Personally, if it could be done non-stop, i.e. on one tank of gas, it could be tempting. Is that ride scenic (partially)?

Is that 11am tomorrow or yesterday? (or the day after tomorrow? :-) )

  • Amy18/08/2011 at 01:09

    Is that ride scenic (partially)?

to be honest I have no idea. Scenery is bad when I'm driving anyway because I can't look at it as well as if I was a passenger.

Is that 11am tomorrow or yesterday? (or the day after tomorrow? )

    11am on the 16th of September :D

  • Bert18/08/2011 at 01:14

What does a liter of gas cost down (up?) there?

What does a liter of gas cost down (up?) there?

that I'm not entirely sure of either since I pay no attention when I walk past. And I can't even tell you what a litre costs in NZ because when I get petrol there my dad is generous enough to pay for it :D

    Bert 18/08/2011 at 01:55:58

For me, a 1 hour (60 minutes) flight can be a borderline decision between drive and fly. Considering door-to-door time it often comes out quite close. My 1 hour flight would be YUL-YYZ (Montreal, Toronto). If I am in the east, it's a 4.5 hour drive and the flight, security, rental, etc. is 4 hours. The extra half hour is well worth the hastle of flying. I will admit my petrol is "only" 1.35$/L

Good God! $1.35 !!!!, on yeah, freckin' Quebec sales taxes. You know, a hour's drive would put you in Ontario's cheapest gas area around Ottawa....

Have you metnioned that YUL-YYZ is about a 5 hour drive for most people and a 1.5 hour drive if you got "Quebecor" speed?

  • Steven Roy18/08/2011 at 01:31

Melbourne to Sydney takes 9 hours 52 mins to drive

Good God! $1.35 !!!!, on yeah, freckin' Quebec sales taxes. You know, a hour's drive would put you in Ontario's cheapest gas area around Ottawa....

I drive through the Hawksburry (ON) - Grenville (QC) corridor a bit. Grenville gets the benefit of ON prices, being a 3-5KM bridge ride away. I did some regular work in Hull (now Gatineau) and the prices were about the same.

Have you mentioned that YUL-YYZ is about a 5 hour drive for most people and a 1.5 hour drive if you got "Quebecor" speed?

Probably poorly explained If I am to travel from here to eastern Toronto (anything east of the DVP (Don Valley Parkway (407) ) ), I would rather drive the 4.5 hour than (door-to-door) fly the YUL-YYZ + rental etc.

I once did a stint at the UofT, quite downtown Toronto, and it took me 2 hours to get off the DVP on to the "Highway from Hell" 401. The traffic was 40-50-60 KM/H to KINGSTON!!!!!! Needless to say, after that all the Belle Province plated cars were doing nothing less than a ton (160KM/H) until the crappy Quebec roads put a stop to that!

Maybe the trackside speakers would suddenly have a purpose, imagine being able to hear them.

true enough. also, no more track closures due to noise problems.

If the race track came first, that is the problem of the person who bought the house adjacent to it to deal with the noise. There is a reason why the house is "cheap"

If I had my way, there would be two sets of parallel runways at heathrow too, and they would be longer than the ones at H-4 in Iraq. or four times the current lenght. - Gotta get ready for Virgin's Spaceflights you know....!

Wasn't there some sort of upraor of a thrid runway at Heathrow, a few years ago? (sort-of the imte when the BA 777 fell out of the sky due to fuel / moisture freeze up)

Well, based on the original plans, there are four runways at Heathrow. - at most two can be used at any one time as airport alyout is in an old pre-war triangle layout. the runway parallet to the runway at the base of the triangle cross the other two runways at the tip of the triangle.

It was in a discussion about airports, if I recall. The airport in question, like Silverstone, seem to have been coverted into a race track, it seems. :P

As to being nuts, well you live in the area of Tundraland that can have snow in May.... My snowfall is gone by then... so....

  • Bert18/08/2011 at 02:04

Looking at Google maps, YUL is set up in a similar way..

A 4 RW setup would turn it in to an LAX sort of setup. Two runways in arrivals mode (e.g. 1 and 3) and two in arrivals mode (e.g. 2 and 4) this can allow different separation between the two modes.

I just sort of like having eight planes land at the same time on all runway configurations and really watch the ATC'ers sweat.... as well as the aircrews...

Hearts are Latvian really. They have a crackpot chairman with no clue about football but he picks the team. When Burley was the manager he won the first 8 league games of his first season which is way beyond anything anyone could expect Hearts to achieve. He wouldn't do what the chairman said so he was fired before the next match. They have been heading downhill ever since

have been. for almost 4 years now. it's just that i rarely mention it here, if at all. :) things will get crazy in the morning, that's for sure.

i can imagine. good news for you or not?

  • Steven Roy18/08/2011 at 20:09

i wonder if you could watch f1 races from there? would bernie bill you for watching through a telescope?

Bernie would probably bill you for flying over the track whether you watched or not. It is hard to watch a race via a telescope when you have to orbit the Earth every 90 minutes to avoid splatting into the ground

  • Journeyer18/08/2011 at 20:09

hmmm. the way i'm reading it, it looks like HP is going all-in on enterprise (think IBM). the acquisition of Autonomy is also interesting - it's a company that thrives on the cloud - something that HP doesn't really have that much expertise at right now (as we are a servers/infrastructure-heavy company). on balance, all this should be good news for me (i'm in the Enterprise Services group), but i think there's going to be a lot of pain first before we get anywhere near where we want to be. not to mention IBM isn't standing still, either.

true but getting out of a low margin pc business is a good move. seems like the have something of a plan at least. the cloud is growing, home pc sales never will again.

  • Steven Roy18/08/2011 at 20:12

    geostationary orbit?

We are going to need considerably bigger engines and a far more powerful telescope. The longer the orbit the further up you need to be. At least we know it is Kepler's fault

  • Journeyer18/08/2011 at 20:14

indeed so - i think most people will agree that getting out of the PC business is good (once they get over the shock value of it). i am very surprised, though, that we're giving up on webOS so quickly - we did so little with it, when the OS seemed to have so much potential.

  • Steven Roy18/08/2011 at 20:14

    geostationary orbit?

The ISS and the space hotels are 220ish miles up. For geo-stationary orbit you need to be 22,000 miles up

    oops.

And regardless of the orbit or the telescope a little cloud stops you seeing anything

webOS is better than android. it's a true competitor to ios. stunning really but i guess they figure competing against apple, microsoft and google is too big a task.

which goes back to what i said earlier - all-in on enterprise. HP would be crazy not to sell it now if they don't intend to do anything with it - but to who, and for how much?

  • Steven Roy18/08/2011 at 20:22

who'd buy it? unless google loose android to oracle, i can't see anyone wanting to step into that market. maybe google could do with the patents though.

it'll be interesting to see how the Google-Motorola partnership goes. if it goes too well for HTC or Samsung, they may decide to look in webOS' direction.

they probably are, but then microsoft is getting cozy with nokia too. if that partnership works too, it'll point to exclusivity being the way to go to be a proper competitor in mobile.

Wow. We've started buying HP at work and will probably get them for the coming server/workstation upgrade, they are very good, sad to see them go.

Haven't a lot of businesses got HP gear? Be interesting to see what happens to their PC business, I'm not sure lenovo sell as well as IBMs did.

The enterprise bits will stay, so you should still be getting great HP servers. Workstations... we'll see what happens.

Lenovo is targeting a different market compared to what IBM used to. IBM's PCs were almost always for the office, while Lenovo is targeted more towards the home-user consumers.
