Hey guys, how has your week been so far?  Are you enjoying the F1 ‘summer holiday’?  If you are missing your fix of F1 action, I may have some links to help tide you over…

…Firstly, in honour of the awful way in which the Indycar race was conducted, I have found a video full of Safety Car Fails.  Indycar isn’t alone, it seems!

Staying with American racing, when the NASCAR finally got going at Watkins Glen, it had a great finish.  Those barriers look mighty close to the track for my liking, but apparently they can get away with not installing SAFER barriers because of costs, something which I am sure wouldn’t happen in F1.  Pippa Mann probably wishes they had though…

Mercedes have released a making of video of the ‘Decision’ advert – I never realised that Nico and Michael never were in the advert at the same time!

Finally, the amazing Hoonigan Ken Block has just released Gymkhana 4 – which is a bit heavy on the CGI but it’s still awesome.  Click here for almost 10 minutes of hooning in HD!

But what’s been happening in F1?  Well, check out Christine’s Tweets of the Week as well as her Driver and Team Rankings – needless to say, things are a little quiet right now.  Renault have made a cartoon about the summer break and also sponsored Norwich City FC – wonder if both will still be around in the top flight come next May? ;)

James Boyle has a great post comparing the 2014 Engine Regulations to those of the last Turbo Era.  While I think it’s great they are changing the rules so that new manufacturers could be persuaded to join, I don’t think the new engines will compare to those fire-breathing monsters!

Leigh has a quick summary of all the other motorsport goings on over the break, while Victoria has been making F1 Cupcakes – very yummy, apparently.  I wonder which one was quickest from oven to plate to mouth?

Tommy over at WTF1 has collected the best of the #ifFOMcoveredfootball tweets and some great pictures showing what it would look like – very amusing and well worth checking out!

Here’s a slightly disheartening piece about why car magazines don’t always have original and unique content.  Aww…

As promised last week, I have been uploading all my photos since I went on holiday in July – there’s quite a few pics and I am far from finishing them, so check out my photostream, and in particular my photos from the Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix and Egeskov Castle Classic Car and Motorcycle Museum.  If you love Vintage and Classic Cars, you’re in for a treat and they were both great days out!

Finally, here’s a lovely little video for you.  Now, where I am from (Wellington, NZ), it hardly ever gets cold enough to snow in Winter.  But last weekend, for the first time in 15 years it actually did.  One film maker was lucky enough to capture the moment when the snow started falling in the central city and caught it on film.  It’s a really lovely video and it’s full of happy people, so sit back and enjoy it, and I’ll see you in the comments :)

    Nice daily Gavin,

I can confirm that Newman-Haas and Ganassi Racing are now officially protesting the result of Sunday's IndyCar race.

    More to be revealed soon...

  • Amy17/08/2011 at 00:30

    lovely video Gavin :)

much nicer than the image representing Dunedin's snowfall thats circulating on the internet in which someone drew an inappropriate picture in the snow in front of the Octagon webcam :)

    not even techpro barrier? eesh.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 00:55

It is amazing how many useless safety car drivers there have been. I had only ever seen 2 or 3 of those clips

I thought Tony Fernandes was getting involved with Norwich football sqaud or whatever they're called (not a football fan, can you tell?) Oh god, we're not gonna see the Lotus vs Lotus saga spill into everything else now are we? that's a bit more than I can deal with! Fed up of fricking Danny Bahar and his silly ideas ruining a brand that was my childhood dream to own a car! Go away from cars Danny Bahar! grrrr And stop paying off every single classic TEAM lotus driver to try and give yourself credence, it's not big and it's not clever, just pi... grrr sorry, rant over

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 01:04

    looks that way.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 01:05

I love the #ifFOMcovered football post and tweets. It used to be said if the FIA ran football we would have round pitches and square balls so nice to see a new take on this.

I particularly like the tweet about missing minutes 3-5 while we watch replays of the kick off. Looks like this is annoying a lot of people and not just us

Fernandes tried to buy West Ham and even tweeted to suggest a deal had been done

  • Dan17/08/2011 at 01:07

    looks that way.

I think I'm gonna cry! although, i dont follow football, so if they move the battle to there and keep it away from the pitlane, that's fine by me.

It's the only major team in Norfolk and probably 20-30 miles from both Team and Group Lotus. Assuming I remember my East Anglian geography correctly

Bahar has to sell all those extra thousands of cars somewhere so advertising at a football club whose matches are shown to audiences all over the world and particularly in places like China makes sense

I guess they don't need rear grip on an oval. So long as the front works I guess that is enough.

  • guille230617/08/2011 at 01:55

I guess they don't need rear grip on an oval. So long as the front works I guess that is enough.

yeah, but even in ovals you see them going almost sideways sometimes. I wonder if a bit more of grip would prevent some crashes, as they're so at the limit now.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 01:57

yeah, but even in ovals you see them going almost sideways sometimes. I wonder if a bit more of grip would prevent some crashes, as they're so at the limit now.

Could well be that more rear grip would help. The odd thing is that if you listen to the drivers they talk about a car switching from understeer to oversteer during a stint but any time I see them the front end seems to grip OK and the rear is dancing around

  • guille230617/08/2011 at 02:02

Ken Block has just released Gymkhana 4 – which is a bit heavy on the CGI but it’s still awesome

clearly this and rallying require a somewhat different set of skills. his WRC participations never set the world alight

you need to correctly set the zero of the scale. it's "understeer" and "oversteer" over the normal "massively ridiculous oversteer" :P

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 02:07

clearly this and rallying require a somewhat different set of skills. his WRC participations never set the world alight

It's easy to do the gymkhana stuff when he can do 300 re-takes and cut the best bits together. He needs a lot more experience of WRC before we can judge him but WRC is way more difficult than his videos

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 02:07

I was looking at Gavin's photo's from the classic car event and there's a picture on the second row of a Ford Escort, I learned to drive in one just like that (well without the flared wheel arches and huge engine) and right next to it is a Hillman Minx or certainly it's the same shape, maybe a different manufacturer, that was my very first car. Hehe, bought it from a car auction and the guy must have seen us coming and put sand in the gearbox or something to tart it up for sale, we got it home and less than 20 miles later it died, end of car, happy memories though

  • Amy17/08/2011 at 06:00

because everyone else on Twitter is arranging their Davis Cup tickets and I can't because she's AWOL. My to do list is still on paper. You have to go with what works. I've always said being MFC is about having the choice. Plus, there has to be an excuse to buy nice notebooks.

I've been looking a lovely filofax books today and my goodness they can be pretty... I have such a strange love for stationary.

As an aside I love that I can make this comment from a coffee shop yay for smart phones :)

Absolutely... I have two levels of todo list one which is long term things which is on the computer, and one which is current things which is on paper. Even if I have a long term thing that suddenly comes up it goes onto paper until I get to a convienient time to go back to the computer.

I want to deal with the quickest thing possible to get it down and paper still seems to be that.

However any calendar based still goes on the electronic calendar without fail.

    I'd completely forgotten about it!

I kind of stopped watching after the Jim Clark special. Windsor was doing a four way interview via Skype and it was a painful watch and it wasn't that good, so I decided to keep my Wednesday evenings mostly free.

(Unless someone super mega is on).

Nick's crash with the SC in Brazil 2002 would've been perfect here, but he didn't want to include FOM clips lest he get into trouble with FOM.

Especially since the pace car looked to be a faster car.

It would definitely be faster. You also have to wonder why they did not have one of the 100s of race drivers there drive rather than let some cop who had never been on an oval drive

  • Journeyer17/08/2011 at 17:15

Reflex instinct, I guess. When there's trouble, call the cops.

    that's easy. If they're penalizing drivers I like, then they're TERRIBLE. If they're penalizing drivers I don't like, then they're awesome! :)

I thought that was just a GMM type site

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 21:08

I thought that was just a GMM type site

It is, with press releases thrown in and a few columns. Perhaps something is slowly changing there after all. Or maybe they need a figurehead to get publicity.

I don't understand why Fittipaldi would associate himself with it. It's not like he needs the job. He is already worth a fortune

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:31

So much for being a West Ham fan...

as previously discussed, i don't really understand football fans and the we/i/us team thing... from where i'm sitting tony offered to buy in to west ham twice and they turned him down twice.

surely you can blame no-one but west ham?

  • RG17/08/2011 at 21:32

surely you can blame no-one but west ham?

I was talking about the fact he immediately placed a bid for Scott Parker, who is West Ham's best player.

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:33

It is, with press releases thrown in and a few columns. Perhaps something is slowly changing there after all. Or maybe they need a figurehead to get publicity.

i think they have a long term plan and money to make it better, they just have no idea how to go about it. with any luck they're drop GMM soon. maybe.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 21:34

surely you can blame no-one but west ham?

The people who own West Ham don't want to sell. Football is a much more adversarial sport than motor racing because every match it is us against them so as a fan you only can ever see the world from one point of view. Anyone who is seen as ditching a team they have claimed to support for another is guaranteed to get a lot of grief.

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:34

I was talking about the fact he immediately placed a bid for Scott Parker, who is West Ham's best player.

    oooooooh!

so is he buying west ham one player at a time?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 21:36

so is he buying west ham one player at a time?

Which makes him even less popular with the West Ham fans.

It's about the same as the situation at Aston Villa where their manager came from their local rivals so before he had picked his first team the majority of the Villa fans hated the Villa manager.

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:38

It's about the same as the situation at Aston Villa where their manager came from their local rivals so before he had picked his first team the majority of the Villa fans hated the Villa manager.

yeah, i don't get that at all. either he's a good manager or a bad one.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 21:42

yeah, i don't get that at all. either he's a good manager or a bad one.

You need to be around football for a while. Then it makes perfect sense. If he has a good season though the past will be forgiven and he will be popular. Football fans are fickle. If their team signs a player from their local rivals he is liable to get booed in his first match. If he plays well he becomes one of us and no-one dare criticise him. And if he chooses to leave to go to a much better club for a £20 million transfer and 5 times the wages on his first match back playing for that team he will be told he is a reject who wasn't good enough in the first place. Football comes down to either you are one of us or you are not.

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:45

Football comes down to either you are one of us or you are not.

i see it. i just don't get it.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 21:46

i see it. i just don't get it.

You never will until you have a team that you support seriously.

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:48

You never will until you have a team that you support seriously.

it doesn't work that way. i'll never support a team seriously because i don't get that "thing" about sport.

    same reason i don't support a driver.

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 21:48

Football comes down to either you are one of us or you are not.

i see it. i just don't get it.

I don't get it either, actually its one of the things which turns me off about the game

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 21:50

it doesn't work that way. i'll never support a team seriously because i don't get that "thing" about sport.

It's like any other sport. You watch a match and something grabs you and the next thing you know you are a fan.

There is old saying that you don't pick your football team they pick you.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 21:52

I don't get it either, actually its one of the things which turns me off about the game

There is nothing like the atmosphere at a competitive football match between two rival teams. It ain't pretty but it is incredible

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 21:53

It's like any other sport. You watch a match and something grabs you and the next thing you know you are a fan.

that hasn't happened to me, ever. trust me, i don't work like that.

same reason i can just give up watching f1 halfway through a season and not miss it.

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 21:59

It's like any other sport. You watch a match and something grabs you and the next thing you know you are a fan.

I've switched on the TV to find others sports and that's happened. Cricket, athletics, cycling, triathlon. NFL to a point.

I know every year at the beginning of football season I want to get involved and I like watching the teams move up and down the tables and being surprised at who is promoted/relegated, but that's a numbers thing. When I sit and watch a game it doesn't usually grab me, and I tried. It does more at international level, probably because I can identify with England and I can't identify with any local team really.

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 22:02

When I sit and watch a game it doesn't usually grab me, and I tried.

i can get into games, but who i root for changes match-by-match. mostly i support the team with the most people i've heard of.

i think football might be missing a trick, in that i want a football shirt that just says "football". like i have f1 t-shirts that just read "f1". no team, no player, just "football".

    do they exist?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 22:04

i think football might be missing a trick, in that i want a football shirt that just says "football". like i have f1 t-shirts that just read "f1". no team, no player, just "football".

You can't get a neutral football shirt. Your baseball shirt isn't neutral. It has a team and a player on it

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 22:05

You can't get a neutral football shirt. Your baseball shirt isn't neutral. It has a team and a player on it

that's true. but i do have a neutral f1 shirt. strange.

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 22:05

i can get into games, but who i root for changes match-by-match. mostly i support the team with the most people i've heard of.

I think there's only so many times I can watch them kick a ball to the other end, then the others kick it back again. Give me a good passing game with shots on goal though and you've got me.

i think football might be missing a trick, in that i want a football shirt that just says "football". like i have f1 t-shirts that just read "f1". no team, no player, just "football".

:) I know exactly what you mean.

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 22:05

Can you not get one with Premier League on it?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2011 at 22:06

Can you not get one with Premier League on it?

I think the closest you get to neutral is a national team shirt

  • Mr C17/08/2011 at 22:07

i think i finally have an answer to alex's question. whoop!

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 22:07

Dad's team is Man Utd so I follow how they do, and my local big team is Yeovil Town and I like to think of them as 'my' team even though I'm from the county next door (we don't have a big team). I liked it when they played Liverpool in the FA Cup and the BBC guys said Yeovil were the better team, at least in the first half, then in the second Liverpool demolished them but it was fun while it lasted

  • Pat W17/08/2011 at 22:07

I remember when one of my local teams (ish) was the first game and that was broadcast on the BBC.

Still, not enough to make me use Facebook. Might as well go and watch it live. Better that way.

Yep - the panel is Jerry Gappens (race promoter and former CART / IndyCar pit reporter), Rollie Helmling (former USAC president and team owner) and Jeff Stoops (USAC chairman and IndyCar team sponsor).

    Gah...

Gappens should be banned for his comments after the race. Actually he should be banned because he was promoting that race. Then he should be banned because he has already expressed an opinion on what happened.

Gavin has a lot to answer for since he got me to try facebook poker. They have some of the worst poker players in the world playing all the time. There are an amazing number who only have a few thousand chips but at one time had 5 million. I have just found a new record breaker though. His highest ever chip count was 50 million + but now he has 20 thousand. It just shouldn't be possible to lose that many chips
