What a brilliant qualifying we have just witnessed. I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't expecting great things from China, and all things considered it looks like it's going to be a good race. Here are some of the things that will keep us chatting today:

  • Red Bull pick up their first pole position, with Vettel edging out Alonso and Webber to take the top spot. The team were amazingly fast throughout the weekend, but with a surprise in Alonso, I can't wait to see the fuel weights. Forget that business about discussing strategy, I want the facts!
  • The teams are ditching KERS so fast that I almost can't keep up. Overnight, Renault removed all trace of their device, which obviously helped Alonso today. Kubica also decided it wasn't for him. It's not looking good for the technology, is it?
  • John Howett has admitted that the board at Toyota aren't happy with just being a bit faster, they want a win. It's not looking likely this weekend, with electrical problems on Friday, and a gearbox issue on Saturday. Glock barely made it into Q2, and gets a five place grid drop whilst Trulli ended up 6th. It could happen, but it's unlikely in China.

All things considered, I'm really happy that the racing is competitive and Brawn aren't running away with the wins. Fingers crossed we get some good racing tomorrow. Don't forget to leave your summaries for the Digest, and I'll see you in the comments.

    Go Lewis!

Its a bit early to say that Brawn aren't running away with the wins. Great to see some serious competition from Red Bull. Go Mark!

Agreed, the trouble is you are as good as the last race. The Maccas and Heidfeld now the only one with KERS

China Qualifying Review (Why am I so tempted to write Malaysia?)

Qualifying. That was some pretty awesome stuff, finally Brawn seem to have been caught up with by Red Bull. Well done Vettel and well done Alonso for making the best out of an awful car. Kubica, ahhhh, just ahhhhh. So, so, bad.

(Comment subject to the inevitable stewards inquiry)

Sepang and Shanghai are way to similar.

    My summary of qualifying

And I thought Australia's session was good! This one was sensational and full of action. Vettel gambled and won, Alonso did the seemingly impossible, Webber absolutely flew, Barrichello put one over on his teammate and Button now looks a bit worried. The big surprise of the day has to be Fernando, but without KERS will his start be as spectacular has his Malaysian effort? But right now, Vettel, Webber and the RB5 are proving Red Bull truly does have wings and when they use them, they fly!

Is that short enough to be read out entirely this time? :D

  • Rich18/04/2009 at 08:18

Don't forget about ze SwissSeb getting 10th!

  • Fiox18/04/2009 at 08:23

Hmmmn is kers useless or are the regulations on kers making it useless?

There are more powerful kers systems on the market but F1 regulation appears to make the current 80hp(over 7.5sec) look like a big enough advantage... when it's not.

On a secondary note, why are there no wings(I don't mean huge wings... more like flaps) over the sidepods/exhaust on any f1 car I know fins are banned but wings?

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 08:24

Hold on a minute. Button said that if you expect to be 1st and then come 2nd or 3rd and are disappointed, you're in the wrong mindset to be a driver. So what's this all about then, Jenson? Hmmm?

It all helps - needs a bigger boost for longer to be worthwhile though.

It's an aerodynamic device - therfor banned.

Essentially the only wings are allowed are the front and rear wings and a couple of small area that are badly regulated.

It's meant to be going up to around 160hp over the next 3 years.

I'm going to start counting how many times Mark Webber gets the adjective "Australia's" in front of it on our broadcast. So far, twice that I've picked up.

i think he meant during a race ;) but i don't think he was as disappointed as i've seen some drivers after not getting pole, he just knows it's going to be a bit more difficult now. Then again it's still going to be easier than it would have been last year ;)

Just at the moment, there is probably not sufficient advantage. Hence why both Renault and Ferrari have dumped them. The reliability issue is worrying to the teams. Despite what others say Macca is still using KERS and Lewis is close so I think they will turn it around this season to become advantageous. BMW Sauber seem to have lost the plot with the 09 design.

Even with present power limit it is signigicant in race situations, especially Lewis. By Spain Macca and Lewis will be right up there. Not sure about BMW Sauber though. All of the teams still have KERS in some form of development.

And now Renault team boss Flavio Briatore says he will forward an idea to the Formula One Teams' Association (Fota) to stop Brawn GP receiving their share of the cash from television rights this season.

Despite morphing from the Honda team into Brawn GP, Brawn's team is not necessarily guaranteed to inherit Honda's TV bounty because it was entered as a new team for 2009.

Instead, Briatore is proposing the money gets split between the seven teams who need to spend extra cash updating their diffusers after the advantageous split-level design - used by Brawn - was declared legal this week.

    Trouble ahead for FOTA?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/04/one-of-the-biggest-topics.html#more

The article deals more with Ferrari and McLaren's slump this year. But I felt this needed highlighting, mind you it is just Briatore.

Rubens had more fuel than Jenson but qualified higher :D

he did good :) that must make him feel a little better. Although it's not much more fuel so i think it's just enough to mean he'll be stopping after Jenson, either that or found it easier to handle with a bit more weight in :) But it certainly explains why Jenson was expecting to be higher, the red bulls and Alonso are pretty light in comparison. I wouldn't be surprised if Brawn gp thought they would easily get on either of the front 2 rows and so didn't push that hard throughout practice, and then when it got to Q3 realised that the others were unexpectedly fast. should make for an interesting first corner.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 10:28

Ferrari, I think, were in more trouble than McLaren but they were able to hide away while McLaren told everyone they were struggling.

Although they won't admit it, 4th or 5th in the constructors and a couple of wins, similar to Renault last year, should be Ferrari's target.

Massa extremely heavy. But he stuffed his Qualifying.

Can Alonso get to the grid with that light fuel load? Will it last the out lap? ;)

Brawns heavier than the Red Bulls, but is it heavy enough to make it pay off?

Rosberg, Glock and Kubica surprisingly light.

  • Rich18/04/2009 at 10:30

Hamilton and Macca do not look to be to bad. The Brawns are obviously well placed. BMW Sauber are looking dismal. The main variable is how long will the supersofts last in the race.

Are Christine and Mr C asleep?

  • LadySnowcat18/04/2009 at 10:36

Alonso is on fumes and must be hoping for a good start to get ahead of the pack and hold them up...

It looks like Kimi and Lewis weren't expecting a great result but it may hurt Kimi that the 3 KERS runners are pretty much in a group behind him on the grid on similar fuel...

I am not sure how the extra KERS weight factors in with the fuel and whether the KERS runners have less fuel than we expect... I think I had better look back at the pitstops for Malaysia as a clue...

I recall Kimi had to stop earlier than we expected due to the KERS taking up some of the fuel space...

  • toxicfusion18/04/2009 at 10:38

No comparison between Ferrari and Macca the latter are making steady improvement - they are better than BMW Sauber as well.

I know, I was refering to the pre-season build up which towards the end was full of news of McLaren admitting they were struggling. :P

Fuel Loads: Renault had to be going for poll with a fuel load like that surely? It's going to Spain 2008 all over again for Alonso.

  • Dom18/04/2009 at 10:38

    1 Vettel Red Bull 644

    2 Alonso Renault 637

    3 Webber Red Bull 646.5

    4 Barrichello Brawn GP 661

    5 Button Brawn GP 659

Ah, it all makes sense now. ;)

  • Dom18/04/2009 at 10:39

Fuel Loads: Renault had to be going for poll with a fuel load like that surely? It’s going to Spain 2008 all over again for Alonso.

They would have pole if Red Bull weren't on the same strategy too...

  • LadySnowcat18/04/2009 at 10:40

No comparison between Ferrari and Macca the latter are making steady improvement - they are better than BMW Sauber as well.

The interesting thing about Macca and Ferrrai this race is that Lewis's Macca has a reasonable first stab at a diffuser whilst Ferrari don't...

Also Ferrari have ditched KERS due to safety concerns...

    So big differences...

If Ferrari are missing some speed from lacking KERS once they sort the reliability they would be about as far in front of Macca than they had been in Shanghai... and then we need to see their diffuser option...

Barce will be the test n'est pas...

  • Flibster18/04/2009 at 10:40

I am not sure how the extra KERS weight factors in with the fuel and whether the KERS runners have less fuel than we expect… I think I had better look back at the pitstops for Malaysia as a clue…

KERS is included in the 605kg minimum. They just remove some of the ballast to get to the 605kg.

Without all the ballast and driver, expect the cars to be around to be 400-450kg mark

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 10:40

Fuel Loads: Renault had to be going for poll with a fuel load like that surely? It’s going to Spain 2008 all over again for Alonso.

So he's going to almost crash at the end of the warmup lap and then have a less than impressive race before his engine fails? ;)

  • Rich18/04/2009 at 10:43

If Ferrari are missing some speed from lacking KERS once they sort the reliability they would be about as far in front of Macca than they had been in Shanghai… and then we need to see their diffuser option…

Good point here. I think though Macca have had better race day performance (sorry Lewis has rather better race day) and the team better strategy. Kimi had quite a good qualifying today all else considered.

Neither Macca nor Ferrari should be written off just yet.

  • Rich18/04/2009 at 10:45

So he’s going to almost crash at the end of the warmup lap and then have a less than impressive race before his engine fails? ;)

Don't say that he is in my Fantasy Team!

  • LadySnowcat18/04/2009 at 10:46

Apparently all of Kimi's Q3 was on used tyres as they used the 4 sets in Q1 and Q2...

Not sure how many others in Q3 had done this... I think only Buemi...

The big disappointment of qualy has to be Glock... although I don't think Toyota look as strong here as they did in Shanghai...

  • toxicfusion18/04/2009 at 10:46

They would have pole if Red Bull weren’t on the same strategy too…

Yes but Renault were not to know what Red Bull were running.

So he’s going to almost crash at the end of the warmup lap and then have a less than impressive race before his engine fails? ;)

Quite possibly. I was refering to running very light aspect :P

I want Alonso and Vettel to do well because they are both in my fantasy team and I have only just joined. :D

On the subject of KERS, I'm choosing not to run it at Monaco. No point because of the nature of the circuit.

  • LadySnowcat18/04/2009 at 10:47

As for Alonso... he'd better be careful trying to muscle by Mr Vettel...

Morning all, today i've discovered 2 things.....

Firstly, it seems i've slept through quali, and usually i'd be really annoyed, maybe this is me getting sick of F1 getting messed about so i'm not bothered about watching it live like i used to.

Secondly, i've done badly on batracer again....what concerns me most however is this small sentence...."The perfect setup lies 2 points beyond the capabilities of the car."

    oooh goody

  • lou18/04/2009 at 10:49

As for Alonso… he’d better be careful trying to muscle by Mr Vettel…

well he has Rubens in his Brawn/ tank behind him on the next row of the grid, so he really does need to be careful :) although if Rubens hits anyone i wont be impressed Brawn don't have many spares...

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 10:51

Also I'm going to try a strategy inspired by RBR's stellar qualifying today :D

That is why they are built like a tank. The weakest aspect of the Brawn is their start.

  • lou18/04/2009 at 10:52

ok we we will prepare for that, thanks for letting us know ;)

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 10:52

I hadn't heard before now about Webber's engine engineer going missing over the winter, that must've been horrible for the RBR and Renault gangs.

But because he changed it before qualifying, it doesn't give him a penalty, right? Or would you get one regardless of when you change it?

  • lou18/04/2009 at 11:01

Didn’t they say hes onto gearbox 3?

  • LadySnowcat18/04/2009 at 11:08

How come Rubens hasn't got a penalty then...

Is this like the Red Bull issue where it's not part of the actual gearbox just an associated part?....

  • Jon Waldock18/04/2009 at 11:09

Have followed all you what you've said, but teams can change the internals of a gearbox i believe, the gears etc without getting penalised

  • lou18/04/2009 at 11:12

Thanks, so the gearbox is Ruben’s problem

Steven said in the comments it was probably something to do with the fact the gearbox is from the honda development and the engine is from Mclaren.

Jenson has had a gearbox issue, but he has been running in clear air and not been having to push the car as much i shouldn't have thought, where as Rubens has had to push the car for the places he achieved in both races.

  • Rocket (in Canberra)18/04/2009 at 11:12

Can anyone remember how many kilos of fuel is burnt in a lap? Is it 4kgs? (I realise a "lap" is dependant on where you drive the lap)

  • Rich18/04/2009 at 11:12

    Cheers.

  • lou18/04/2009 at 11:14

Have followed all you what you’ve said, but teams can change the internals of a gearbox i believe, the gears etc without getting penalised

yep, tis true. They changed a gear in (4th?) Jenson's car in Australia without him being penalised. But from what they were saying this morning it's Rubens 3rd gearbox.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 11:14

Steven said in the comments it was probably something to do with the fact the gearbox is from the honda development and the engine is from Mclaren. So in essence the Mercedes engine is "rejecting" the Honda gearbox.

  • lou18/04/2009 at 11:14

How come Rubens hasn’t got a penalty then…

no idea i don't understand it tbh... am searching back through the comments cause i'm sure someone said something.

  • lou18/04/2009 at 11:17

So in essence the Mercedes engine is “rejecting” the Honda gearbox.

    his comment was

"If the Mercedes has significantly more power than the Honda engine gearbox problems are not a surprise"

so basically the honda gearbox isn't used to handling as much power as the Mercedes engine has.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 11:18

his comment was “If the Mercedes has significantly more power than the Honda engine gearbox problems are not a surprise” so basically the honda gearbox isn’t used to handling as much power as the Mercedes engine has.

So it's the other way around - the gearbox "rejecting" the engine :D

    hey, everyone.

in the 7 hours I was gone, 1658 new comments. Nice work!

I heard about the RBR resurgence. I'm betting Vettel will fall back to 3rd, Alonso will fall back to 6th or 7th, and Webber will DNF. Brawn 1-2, with Button ahead of Barrichello after he jumps him at the stops.

    I can understand why though.

Brawn is a new team, not a rename of Honda - FIA have said it - which is why they are at the bum end of the pit lane.

As a new team they are entitled to nothing - they even have to wait a couple of years before they get any prize money they win this year iirc.

  • Flibster18/04/2009 at 11:30

yep, tis true. They changed a gear in (4th?) Jenson’s car in Australia without him being penalised. But from what they were saying this morning it’s Rubens 3rd gearbox.

yup - but flavio is doing this because he's pissed at brawn, not because of the rules. had they won their case against brawn, would he be doing this? i don't think so.

    Pretty much what I'm expecting...

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 11:36

Then where is Rubens’ 2nd gearbox penalty then?

From reading the regs, the key part of 28.6 which is all about gearboxes:

"For the purposes of this Article only, an Event will be deemed to comprise P3, the qualifying practice session and the race."

so if it busted yesterday and they changed it then they'd be fine.

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 11:36

He finished the last race, so if he's using a different gearbox to the one last race, there should be another penalty.

I suppose he could have been using a different gearbox in FP1 or 2 to the Malaysian GP one - but that then begs the question... Whats the point of having to use the race engines if you don't have to use the race gearboxes as well?

Looking at the fuel loads - Brawn have the fastest car, Toyota have a faster car than quali suggests, Red Bull have a slower car than quali suggests, and Renault are still slow. Nothing much has changed from Malaysia...

In the last two races, Jenson has left his first pit stop miles ahead of the driver in second place, so he shouldn't have a problem doing so here. That depends on what Rubens can do though...

That can be my summary for the digest, actually... ;)

It's not great to use up your new super softs before Q3...

To run light for qualy is good... for qualy....

To have a diffuser is better...

But the best news is to drive an Adrian Newey miracle car... especially when you can drive like an angel... albeit a rather cheeky angel...

My very bold race prediction for tomorrow in Shanghai is as follows, taking into account the predicted rainfall during the race:

1st - Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes)

    2nd - Fernando Alonso (Renault)

3rd - Jenson Button (Brawn Mercedes)

i hope so, one day I want to be good at quizzes, but at the moment I can’t remember podiums from 2007 let alone 10 years ago when I first watched an entire season!

I'm gonna try and guess them without looking them up now:

    Australia - Raikkonen, Alonso, Hamilton

    Malaysia - Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen

    Bahrain - Massa, Hamilton, Kubica

    Barcelona - Massa, Hamilton, Raikkonen

    Monaco - Alonso, Hamilton, Massa

    Canada - Hamilton, Heidfeld, Wurz

    USA - Hamilton, Alonso, Massa

    France - Raikkonen, Massa, Hamilton

    Britain - Raikkonen, Alonso, Hamilton

    Europe - Alonso, Massa, Webber

    Hungary - Hamilton, Raikkonen, Massa

    Belgium - Raikkonen, Alonso, Massa

    Italy - Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen

    Japan - Hamilton, Kovalainen, Raikkonen

    China - Raikkonen, Alonso, Massa

    Brazil - Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen

    How did I do? :P

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 12:13

Oops, missed out Turkey - Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 12:15

    How did I do? :P

Its like repetition at times, they had like 6 different drivers on the podium. We've had 5 this year.

Oh, Kubica didn't get a podium in 07

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:15

    Bahrain was Massa, Hamilton, Raikkonen

    Hungary was Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld

    Turkey was Massa, Raikkonen, Alonso

    Belgium was Raikkonen, Massa, Alonso

    Brazil was Raikkonen, Massa, Alonso

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:16

At the time I never realised 2007 was so repetitive podium wise, how did I miss something so blindingly obvious. I was probably just excited to regularly see both McLaren drivers on it :D

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 12:17

Oh, Kubica didn’t get a podium in 07

    Didn't think so but I wasn't sure.

Bahrain was Massa, Hamilton, Raikkonen Hungary was Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld Turkey was Massa, Raikkonen, Alonso Belgium was Raikkonen, Massa, Alonso Brazil was Raikkonen, Massa, Alonso

Brazil was right! Massa won his home race.

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 12:17

    Brazil was Raikkonen, Massa, Alonso

Of course if it were the way Woodwiss said it in Brazil, Alonso would be the champion

  • LadySnowcat18/04/2009 at 12:17

As Kimi won Brasil in 2007 and had an engine failure in Barce...

    But not too bad...

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 12:17

Brazil was right! Massa won his home race.

Oh wait...no you are right. Kimi was first across.

  • Dom18/04/2009 at 12:17

Brazil was right! Massa won his home race.

Not on 07. He let Kimi pass for the championship.

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:17

Brazil was right! Massa won his home race.

In 2006. Remember he had to give the win to Kimi in 2007 so that he can win the title?

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 12:18

Brazil was right! Massa won his home race.

No, Massa let Raikkonen through at the pitstops. Your thinking of 08

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:18

As Kimi won Brasil in 2007 and had an engine failure in Barce…

Hmmm... No wonder - it didn't look right. Massa, Hamilton... who was 3rd?

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:18

Hmmm… No wonder - it didn’t look right. Massa, Hamilton… who was 3rd?

Ah, it was Alonso - Alonso got the lead back after Monaco since they tied but Alonso had more wins.

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:20

I had to think for a second to remember who was 2nd and 3rd in Singapore, and I was there! You all put me to shaaaame.

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:20

I had to think for a second to remember who was 2nd and 3rd in Singapore, and I was there! You all put me to shaaaame.

Do you remember who they were? ;)

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:22

Do you remember who they were? ;)

to be honest I was thinking Rosberg got third and Hamilton second, then I remembered Rosberg was 3rd in Australia and I did know his Singapore result was an improvement on that, so he must have been 2nd because he certainly didn't win.

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:23

yup. Nico was 2nd, Lewis 3rd.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 12:24

    I'll try 2008 now:

    Australia - Hamilton, Heidfeld, Rosberg

    Malaysia - Raikkonen, Kubica, Kovalainen

    Bahrain - Massa, Kubica, Kovalainen(?)

    Spain - Raikkonen, Massa, Hamilton

    Turkey - Massa, Hamilton

    Monaco - Hamilton, Kubica, Massa

    Canada - Kubica, Heidfeld, Coulthard

    France - Massa, Raikkonen, Trulli

    Britain - Hamilton, Heidfeld, Barrichello

    Germany - Hamilton, Piquet, Massa

    Hungary - Kovalainen, Glock, Raikkonen

    Europe - Massa, Hamilton, Kubica

    Belgium - Massa, Heidfeld, Hamilton

    Italy - Vettel, Kovalainen, Kubica

    Singapore - Alonso, Rosberg, Hamilton

    Japan - Alonso, Kubica, Raikkonen

    China - Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen

    Brazil - Massa, Raikkonen, Alonso

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:24

yup. Nico was 2nd, Lewis 3rd.

I do remember Ralf was on the podium for the first race I ever watched.

    Ugh, Ralf.

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:25

So Argentina 1997 was your first?

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 12:25

    Bahrian was with Raikkonen third.

And I actually forgot who finished third in Canada as well. Not that they were important

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:25

    I’ll try 2008 now:

Kovalainen wasn't on the podium in Bahrain, but I couldn't tell you who was.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 12:26

Didn't finish Turkey. I'll say Heidfeld.

  • Dom18/04/2009 at 12:26

And I actually forgot who finished third in Canada as well. Not that they were important

    Coulthard?

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 12:26

    Bahrian was with Raikkonen third.

Brazil was Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen wasn't it

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 12:26

Didn’t finish Turkey. I’ll say Heidfeld.

No, he got four second places.

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:26

    Bahrain had Massa, Kubica, Raikkonen

    Turkey had Massa, Hamilton, Raikkonen

    The rest are right. ;)

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:27

Brazil was Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen wasn’t it

Oh yeah - good catch, RG. ;)

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:27

So Argentina 1997 was your first?

    Spa 1998

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:28

    Spa 1998

Oh. What got you addicted? Was it the mega-pileup on the 1st start? ;)

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:28

    Bahrain had Massa, Kubica, Raikkonen

    Turkey had Massa, Hamilton, Raikkonen

I should be able to remember Bahrain podiums because the look on their faces when they swill their not-champagne are always hilarious.

From reading the regs, the key part of 28.6 which is all about gearboxes:

“For the purposes of this Article only, an Event will be deemed to comprise P3, the qualifying practice session and the race.”

so if it busted yesterday and they changed it then they’d be fine.

but it still counts as one of their gear boxes for the season doesn't it? or am i getting mixed up with engines here?

  • Journeyer18/04/2009 at 12:31

personally i think Rubens would do better in the rain this weekend out of the 2 brawns

  • Amy18/04/2009 at 12:33

Oh. What got you addicted? Was it the mega-pileup on the 1st start? ;)

I wasn't addicted though! I didn't watch it again that season, and I only watched 3 or 4 races in 1999. I watched all of 2000, and on and off through 2001-2003.

I watched all of 2004 because I started Uni that year and it didn't matter that I was up til 2am on Monday mornings because I had no intention of going to lectures on Mondays anyway :D My boyfriend that year used to come over on Sunday nights to watch all the races because my TV was bigger than his, and that's when I got really hooked.

Since then the only races I've missed live were 2005 USA because I had an exam, 2008 Malaysia because I was on a plane home from Melbourne, and 2008 Monaco because my grandmother died in the middle of qualifying and we left in a hurry to be with my grandad.

The next day I asked my boyfriend what I missed and if he had taped it for me, he said it was such a farce he'd stopped recording it. I only watched it for the first time a few months ago on youtube, solely to see how the commentators coped!

There's rules for engines and gearboxes. Gearboxes have to last for 4 consecutive races or there is a penalty

There’s rules for engines and gearboxes. Gearboxes have to last for 4 consecutive races or there is a penalty

But there's no ceiling on the number of gearboxes they can use in a season.

  • Jackie18/04/2009 at 12:42

But there’s no ceiling on the number of gearboxes they can use in a season.

    Big comment .. sorry

28.6 For the purposes of this Article only, an Event will be deemed to comprise P3, the qualifying practice session and the race.

    a) Each driver may use no more than one gearbox for four consecutive Events in which his team competes. Should a driver use a replacement gearbox he will drop five places on the starting grid at that Event and an additional five places each time a further gearbox is used. Any replacement gearbox must be fitted with the same gear ratios that were declared under d) below and will only be required to complete the remainder of the Event in question. Any change to the gear ratios declared under d) below will incur a further five grid place penalty. In either case a new four race sequence may start at the following Event. Unless the driver fails to finish the race (see below) the gearbox fitted to the car at the end of the Event must remain in it for three further Events. Any driver who failed to finish the race at the first, second or third of the four Events for reasons which the technical delegate accepts as being beyond the control of the team or driver, may start the following Event with a different gearbox without a penalty being incurred. A gearbox will be deemed to have been used once the car's timing transponder has shown that it has left the pit lane.

    b) If a driver is replaced after the first, second or third of a four Event period, having finished the first, second or third Events, the replacement driver must use the gearbox which the original driver had been using.

    c) After consultation with the relevant team the FIA will attach seals to each gearbox in order to ensure that no moving parts, other than those specifically permitted under d) below, can be rebuilt or replaced.

    d) At each Event seals may be broken once, under supervision and at any time prior to the second day of practice, for the sole purpose of changing gear ratios and dog rings (excluding final drives or reduction gears). Competitors must inform the FIA technical delegate which ratios they intend to fit no later than two hours after the end of P2. Gear ratios and dog rings (excluding final drives or reduction gears) may also be changed under supervision for others of identical specification at any time during an Event provided the FIA technical delegate is satisfied there is evident physical damage to the parts in question and that such changes are not being carried out on a systematic basis.

    e) Other than under d) above, a replacement gearbox will also be deemed to have been used if any of the FIA seals are damaged or removed from the original gearbox after it has been used for the first time.

Campaign to stop calling Vettel young:

"Vettel, now in his second full season in F1, is now to be known as ‘old hand Seb’ or ‘old man Vettel’ and from now on is only ever to be pictured smoking a pipe, listening to BBC Radio 4 and moaning about how Sébastien Buemi listens to his music too loud, if music is what you can call that awful racket."

Certainly looking like a lottery at the moment. According to each on seperately:

ProWeather says a 50% chance of PM showers

Accuweather says rather cloudy and breezy

    Weatherbug has mostly cloudy

    Weather.com says PM showers

MSN Weather says PM rain, 90% chance of showers

Basically it's either gonna rain or just be cloudy but dry.

Does it ever rain in Bahrain?

Apparently it does, but very rarely.

And when it does, not for long.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 13:48

Funny that a country with rain in its name sees virtually none of it. It's one of those ironic things about countries. Like how Iceland is all green and Greenland is all ice.

i spent about 5 weeks driving round deserted roads that were rather wide with my dad, then he decided to put me with a pro "to finish up". On the first day, the pro took me through the middle of the city during a Christmas shopping Saturday. All the things I'd never had before like pedestrians, other cars, hills and traffic lights. I hated it, but I passed both my tests first time :) I haven't driven a car in almost a year, oh how I miss it :(

    I have no hope. {Comment #62}

No need to despair, Flibster! How about putting the 32-bit version of Ubuntu Linux on ISO CD and the DBGL frontend for DOSBOX?

(If that's all hieroglyphics to you, my idea is to get a version of Linux that can be put on a CD. When this is done, Linux can be booted up using the CD without making any changes whatsoever to the underlying operating system installation or partitioning. Then, a Linux-adapted version of DOSBOX could be used to play through GP3 through. It would be right at the top end of what DOSBOX could emulate in terms of the software requirements, but it's the best I can do).

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 15:05

If it is, I reckon I could just about work out how many laps of fuel everyone is carrying.

    Really? I remember a damaged Jordan on the track… {Comment #163}

Very much so. Narain Karthikeyan ended his F1 career with a proper bang and the marshalls didn't seem to care much.

There was also the attack of the mutant drain cover which ended Montoya's race.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 15:12

I reckon I'll have a go at working out the average lap times again, with all practice sessions and fastest qualifying time.

Weather report from Windguru says rain will begin between 2pm and 5pm. The race starts at 2pm.

The three-hour block has 0.9mm of rain predicted, but the next three-hour block is predicted to have 2.5mm of rain. I reckon it'll be dry until the last few laps, but with a three-hour window the rain could fall at any point of the race or not at all based on this prediction.

Perhaps more useful is the prediction of wind blowing in a north-westerly direction at a steady 13 knots, air temperature of around 19 degrees Celcius, and very overcast, to the point where visibility at ground level may be slightly reduced.

  • me18/04/2009 at 15:25

Since they have Buemi present, I'm guessing there are either some very good mystic predictors in China designing that or they simply forgot to check what was going on.

How many of them think that the black and yellow of the BBC is Super Aguri's new livery (since Davidson, one of the Super Aguri drivers, is commentating now).

It is a pretty serious shed! He doesn't call it a shed... it is "the workshop"

  • Scott Woodwiss18/04/2009 at 15:44

That is because Piquet wasnt in q3, where as Alonso was, so he’d be slower

Even so, I'm only taking Alonso's fastest laptime over the whole qualifying session. Despite that, Piquet is quicker by about 1 and a half hundredths.

The only reason I know the stewards have turned up this weekend is that somebody would surely have complained if they’d forgotten to board their plane to China. No infractions have been noted by the stewards so far, not even so much as a pit lane speeding incident.

They are quiet.... almost too quiet!

  • Lukeh18/04/2009 at 15:46

    wassup?

Just one of them days where you feel you're the only person there who's bothering to actually do what they're paid for. There's oother little factors as well such as feeling so bad I had to go buy paracetomal to stop myself being sick and it makes for a pretty low day really...

Just looking forward to Bahrain now and hoping that the race will be good.

  • Flibster18/04/2009 at 15:46

    Forgot to mention this earlier.

May have located an older race prepared 2CV for sale. Ripe for stripping and rebuilding.

Have also found someone willing to give me a go in one at a track/airfield day.

Haven't a clue what 'Kate's Dirty Sister' refers to, obviously some in-joke with the RB mechanics. I've asked matey boy who works in the composites department to see if he can shed any light on it.

On a Red Bull theme, I was interested to pick up on Webber's comments in the press conference about his previous Renault engine engineer Pierre-Emeric Benteyn:

I want to say something on the Renault side concerning my engine engineer from last year, Pierre-Emeric Benteyn, he’s gone missing on Aconcagua Mountain, it looks like he’s lost his life up there over the winter, but it’s a very good day for Renault and I want today… Pierre lived his life to the full and was a really extreme guy and did some amazing things and he was very much part of our team and part of the Viry operation from Renault on the racing side, and it’s a good day for Renault at Viry and I’m sure they are all thinking of Pierre.

Strange that nobody has heard much about this prior to today really? I know he's not considered an F1 'big-wig' but all the same, you'd think it might have hit headlines somewhere. Unless I've missed it a few months ago?

Vettel, Heidfield, Buemi, Bourdais, Button, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Rosberg, Trulli, Sutill and Fisichella are pictured with the 2008 versions of their respective cars.

Barrichello is pictured with the 2006 BAR Honda.

Super Aguri as already mentioned. With Sato pictued with the 2005/6 car and Davidson pictured with the 2007 car.

For things like the above there are sometimes grants available.

In Plymouth and Glasgow some long dead person has left money for young people in the area to spend on entirely trivial things. Enjoying themselves basically. There must be more around the country. My stepson applied saying he wanted to go to Glastonbury and got £100. Ask at your local library for info on local trusts, bursaries, bequests etc. They used to have a list. Or of course try online!

Yo, people, c'mon. I mean I was thinking this morning about Lauda's words from late 2006. He said that with Italians in charge of Ferrari things are likely to deteriorate quickly. It didn't really show in 2007 and 2008 but now I'm starting to believe it. Kimster in his monstrous red Ferrari cap looks like some Finnish rapper.

What was Jean Todt doing in China? Suggestions? Maybe you know something? Will he be back?

What's Piquer Sr. doing at every race this season?

    Fisichella back to Renault?

My favourite quote of the day: "There's been a few legends in that gravel trap in the past, so I've joined them." M. Webber

My favourite quote of the day: "While 12th position doesn't truly reflect my pace, it's clear that we're heading in the right direction." H. Kovalainen

was playing the megadrive one last night but more so the updated one on the xbix live arcade this week which is extremely faithful to the old school games.

    what's he done in football?

  • Dom18/04/2009 at 20:56

    what’s he done in football?

He's good at sacking managers but that's about it...

  • RG - Doing it for Timo18/04/2009 at 20:56

    what’s he done in football?

Took over QPR and made them a laughing stock by literally sacking a manager every time he loses a game, more or less

  • Dom18/04/2009 at 20:56

I think that’s taking things a little too far. You’ve crossed the line.

    He deserves to know!

  • Jon Waldock18/04/2009 at 20:56

    what’s he done in football?

correct me if im wrong, but the team he bought has had 10 differnet managers in 2 years or something rediculous like that, silly man

  • Spikey18/04/2009 at 21:17

Just catching up on the posts (cant sleep, damn these daytime naps!)

Flav - has he banged his head? He wants Brawn (and only Brawn) to return the tv money because they have designed a better part then the other teams? Have I got that right?

So should the other teams ask for some money from Renault because of the mass damper system thingy that was ruled illegal?

It's a shame. I read his interview in Autosport before the season started and I was starting to like the bloke but now he has reverted to form.

As great as Alonso's performance was today in qualy, I now want both Renaults to crash out on the first lap. Is that wrong of me? :p

Return of the Jedi is just the same as Star Wars, but with teddy bears. I mean would you believe it, the Empire build another Death Star with the same fundamental flaw in the design?

It’s a piece about how Ross Brawn has coped with the consequences of the diffuser controversy. Written by David Tremayne. Not nasty at all.

You sometimes wonder if Flav's brain does anything but move his bottom jaw. If the Brawn drivers are so awful and his drivers are so fab that simply means the team he is responsible for built an even worse car than we think. Why doesn't he just say our car is so bad even I can't believe it.

Wonder if this was affecting Ferrari's balance and why they have ditched KERS

"A KERS-related failure on Kimi Raikkonen's car in opening practice at Sepang allowed us to see how the system's large battery is packaged in a carbon fibre box within the F60's chassis. It is located in a cavity under the chassis, the presence of which means a significantly smaller fuel tank than would otherwise be possible. With the base of the battery box now effectively forming a second floor, it also means the fuel is higher in the chassis, raising its centre of gravity."

Amazing to see someone like Dan Gurney in tears 40 years later.
