We're into the race weekend now, with Free Practice already done and dusted. There'll be plenty to talk about this weekend, as the teams start adapting their cars depending on how their performance has been of late. At the moment, we're discussing:
- Whether Hamilton's P1 in FP1 was due to a new attempt at the double decker diffuser he was running. Chances are it was. We also saw Kubica way down at the bottom of the timesheets with his new KERS device, whilst the Ferrari boys were struggling without theirs.
- It turns out that BMW are still deciding whether to withdraw their appeal from Malaysia regarding the rear diffusers. Although the Australia protests were thrown out by the ICA this week, BMW won't withdraw theirs until they receive it "in writing." Seems like a bizarre thing to do, considering everyone else is moving on from the ruling now.
- Finally, the audio of our impromptu podcast is available via the Sidepodcast Drop. It's the unedited version, fresh from Hyde Park, but if you'd prefer to wait for the edited version, it should appear, um, soon. We're still dreaming up names for it, although it will be an F1 Debrief. Sideparkcast is a good one, and Sidepodpark also makes me chuckle. If you've got any thoughts, let us know, there's no prizes!
That'll do it for now. I'm off to update my Fantasy Racers, don't forget to do yours. There'll be a reminder post along with my decisions shortly. Until then, I'll see you in the comments.
I think Ferrari have to put KERS back on for FP3 to see the impact it actually has. Will be interesting to see if Kubica keeps his for tomorrow. As always, good to see Webber up there, also the fastest non-diffuser car. Possibly to be expected though.
That reminds me, don't forget to submit short summaries for the Digest later today. Discuss what you saw in FP today and how it'll affect what we see tomorrow.
Can I use this in the show, Sean?
Sure.
It's not raining in Monaco! I might get to bed early!
I'm guessing Kubica + KERS = one heavy BMW.
It's snowing again O_o
Everyone except Ferrari, McLaren and Renault have Friday quotes out now.
Well, there goes the last works team left in the BTCC :(
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74519
Button fights back!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74531
Damn. Well, sorta makes sense with no other works teams. So that is sad but not surprising
Great response from both of them, and Renault tried to get Button over the winter? Interesting... also, I think rubens summed it up perfectly there
"There are plenty of good people in the paddock and plenty of bad losers."
couldn't have said it better myself. Stupid Flav.
Have written a Desktop Doohickey guide on the wiki:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Desktop+Doohickey
Haha, nice one Jensen!
Apart from the economic downturn, I know why all the works team aren't in the BTCC - WTCC.
Just seen BATRacer qualifying, I would have got pole there. I would have. :(
So Nelsinho must be thanking his lucky stars Brawn managed to buy it out. Otherwise, he'd be out of a job...
It's just prolonging the inevitable with him though isn't it?
Of course, Flavio could say, "I didn't go after you to win a title. I went after you because you'd be a better #2 than Nelsinho will ever be."
I'm sure that's what he was thinking, anyway...
I'll honestly be surprised if we see him last the entire 2009 at this rate.
Summary:
Nothing happened for most of FP1
Hamilton fights Brawn back with his new diffuser in FP1
Button shows him what a real double diffuser is like in FP2
The Force Indias went off-track a lot
Ferrari need KERS; Kubica doesn't
Good stuff.
Is this for the Digest?
I was going to say he'd get the boot before the end of the first european stint, but its a big long one now, he will be gone by Valencia I think
I am after summaries for the digest, yup.
Ok.
That was my first real taste of getting up way too early in the morning to watch a practice session. What have I learned? That the 5Live coverage is excellent, it can get rather dull at times. From the practice itself, hard to tell how much BMW are 'sandbagging', normally its in the midfield but this is right at the back of the grid, does Kubica really need KERS because he might be fast enough without the weight of it.
I tried staying up staying up to watch FP1 and fell asleep after about half an hour. It doesn't sound like I missed much though!
Lee McK tweet: "Feeling increasingly worse in China - voice almost gone! Couple more McLaren interviews to go and then straight to bed to be ready for tmrw"
Should I be suspicious that Mr C and Ms McK are getting sick at the same time?
hehe :)
My summary:
Brawn GP go into qualifying with the advantage once again, Jenson leading Rubens as is becoming the status quo. But hot on their heels is Red Bull, something which I for one am pleased to see. Webber looks to be the stronger of the two and I think he could be on course for a good result this weekend. Toyota and Rosberg are a little behind this time but not too much as they still take up their customary places behind Brawn. Meanwhile, McLaren seem to be making some progress with a new front wing and double diffuser, although it looks like their stellar FP1 performance was just a shortlived thing No doubt we'll see more from them once they get their "big update" at Barcelona. As for Ferrari, BMW and Renault, what on earth is going on? Ferrari have admitted getting worse without KERS, while the other two are just plain off the pace, especially Kubica who must be frustrated carrying around what must be the heaviest car on the grid now. A rather uneventful day to begin the weekend, but at least there's no controversy to contend with...apart from Flavio shooting his mouth off, that is.
Morning all, how on earth did i manage to sleep through FP1 and FP2. how did i do that?!?
When Mr C said he was going to bed, you don't think he meant going to Shanghai, did he? :D
He does have the occasional typo, maybe he did. :)
I can imagine Mr C on the Debrief this weekend:
Christine: How are you?
Mr C: *SNIFF* I can't feel my nose. *SNIFF* AACHOO!
This picture shows Toyota's little attachments to the front wing

Should I be suspicious that Mr C and Ms McK are getting sick at the same time? {Comment #26}
Jarno Trulli's lost his voice according to the BBC commentary early in FP1 - I think there's just a really nasty bug going round.
Ooh, new Brawn front wing?
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/126218
Now that's a real summary!
I feel much better with China in your – oh, we've done that gag, haven't we? Mustn't push too far...
Close up of McLaren's double diffuser.
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/126234
Doesn't look that good imo.
It's the atmosphere in that pestilent place. When I got back from there last year I felt like I'd been smoking 40 a day.
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/126288
Have Williams got those front wing attachments like Toyota as well? Little difficult to make out from this pic.
So Nelsinho must be thanking his lucky stars Brawn managed to buy it out. Otherwise, he’d be out of a job… {Comment #16}
I think he'll last until one of the following criteria are met:
1) Alonso leaves Renault
2) Renault leaves Renault
3) Renault's junior development driver produces a credible, GP2-race-winning replacement who is willing to sign a management contract with Flavio
4) A big name (e.g. Hamilton) gets sacked/loses his job
So I think he'll either be gone by Spain or make it into at least 2010, depending on McLaren's fate on April 29.
Mr C has no excuse. He just ran around a bit on Wednesday.
Look on Speed TV and you'll see a couple of Chalk Talk sessions for both Australia and Malaysia :D Remember those?!
When Mr C said he was going to bed, you don’t think he meant going to Shanghai, did he? {Comment #30}
Did someone in one of his off-line social circles end up near the F1 circus/near Shanghai at some point in the last week or so?
Now that’s a real summary! {Comment #36}
Thank you, Stuart - coming from you, that is quite a compliment :D
It’s the atmosphere in that pestilent place. When I got back from there last year I felt like I’d been smoking 40 a day. {Comment #39}
Things like that make me really glad that I can't go there.

Watch the Malaysia GP chalk talk on Speed TV, it's all about diffusers and you get to see Toyota's.
would that be lala, or dipsy?
Do you think he'll find his seat?
Someone's sitting there mate.
From asrowe on Twitter:

aahh i've had a shower and feel much more awake :D time to catch up with the comments i've missed i suppose.
:D
awww!! :D
lmao, aww. Thats so cuuuute.
Button and Barrichello responded to Briatore's remarks, Button made sure he mentioned twice that Flavio wanted to sign him for this season
Just read that, made me laugh. Silly man
The article on Autosport ends on such a great note as I said earlier with Barrichello's quote. I really like how he addressed the comments. Still shocked at why Flav would make such an absurd and unecessary said of quotes, not so much shocked at Flav, but more shock at how unecessary and derogatory he seemed at them.
also:
"He is obviously a very angry man after the diffuser issues and he is obviously very disappointed that they haven't produced a car that is as competitive as ours."
hammer... nail... smack!
Or the preferred version which is: hammer... face... smack!
would that be lala, or dipsy? {Comment #49}
Neither - looks like Mike Gascoyne to me ;)
(Laalaa is yellow and Dipsy is green. Mike Gascoyne is several colours...)
wow!!
I like the "bad looser" remark :-)
I think Flavio's reaction would actually be "OWWWWWWW!"
oh no... the first time in ages that's happened...
erm... doesn't look like it. i think its only new in the fact it isn't a left over from Malaysia ;) i think it's one of the first close up pics i've seen of it though it could be new...
you mean this one:
"There are plenty of good people in the paddock and plenty of bad losers."
i mean, i only ask cause i just wanted to make sure we're talking about the quote where rubens says of flavio:
"There are plenty of good people in the paddock and plenty of bad losers."
i honestly can't read that quote enough. how does it look with added emphasis?
"There are plenty of good people in the paddock and plenty of bad losers."
ahh, love it.
Yeah I probably meant new front wing detail.
go rubens!!
Do you think he’ll find his seat? {Comment #50}
That must be the bus conductor for the Opacity Challenged Invidiuals' Society (OCIS) Annual Road Trip. Other venues to be visited include the opening of a completely enclosed underground hot-air balloon site, the Politicial Honesty Conference, a randomly-selected patch of the Sahara Desert and the site of the former Grand Prix in Phoenix. Attendence at the Bahrain Grand Prix subject to available grandstand space.
:D :D
I thought it was nice to see both drivers defend the team and how they deserve this rather than just jenson too. I'm still going with the argument Russell has a bad weekend in malaysia and was just frustrated rather than being generally frustrated at being 'brawns no. 2'.
...did I just call rubens 'Russell?'
Oh dear. I can't be having that.
Button made sure he mentioned twice that Flavio wanted to sign him for this season {Comment #57}
Ah, but was Flavio Briatore looking for something to prove to Renault's board that they were making progress by passing new milestones? Someone with Flavio's mind and tongue could easily come up with that if he needed to get out of a sticky corner quickly...
On this occasion, though, it won't help. Flavio just looks silly for kicking someone when he's up.
Watching FP1 again, i've decided what i like most about Alonso (never thought i'd be saying this).....his gloves :)
hehe :D you may need some more sleep ;)
Ronald is better.
Oh definitely, ronald is the top tier of bad alternative names for rubens :D
Although, I quite liked the one from earlier - Rebuns.
Saying it out sounds like a south african accent...
Oh the fun. Stuck outside work in the drizzle cause the fire alarm has gone off
aww :(
if you were having a really bad day, it would be pouring down.
Oh the fun. Stuck outside work in the drizzle cause the fire alarm has gone off {Comment #83}
That's bad timing. Hope it's just an alarm.

Anyone watching whats happening with Donnington at the moment? Practically all the races are being cancelled, it's terrible, you'd have thought they'd have thought of that before it happened
The F1 Revolution marches on... But I never thought I'd say that manufacturer Toyota would join privateers Williams, Brawn, and Red Bull as insurgents. :D
See ya.
see ya!
bye bye :)
see ya!
See ya Bassano. :)
Crofty this morning:
"Hot bums, soft rear ends, i feel a school boy giggle coming on"
:D hehe
Great quote. In fact, thats going to be my new personal message. Who was it that said it?
Yeah, I guess so. Just didn't really see it coming...
David Croft - BBC Five Live F1 commentator
Just had a though - could Flavio's statements mean something else?
If you can't beat them, copy them.
Forget about 2009. Freeze the car. Put all your focus on 2010 instead.
It worked for Brawn - it can work for Renault. But will they have to lose their manufacturer too? ;)
Renault probably don't have that much patience. And if Fernando leaves them for Ferrari, I can't see that team staying in F1...
Well, Honda left Brawn, it's not hurting them too much right now. ;) Besides, this team was Toleman or Benetton before it was ever Renault.
Fernando leaving would be the bigger issue, though - but I'm thinking they can hire a Jarno Trulli (if Toyota go for Kazuki or Kamui) or even a Rubens Barrichello (if Brawn indeed drop him after this season).
I’ve just been thinking about something. Looking back at the GTR2 PC game, F1 mods didn’t include full pit crews which meant there were only 2 mechanics changing all 4 tyres, one on each side. Could this not work for F1? It might make the racing more exciting because with less people working on the car, it’s more of a race to get the stop done which means more chances of mistakes. I reckon it could work, what about you guys?
How I see it - the only reason Renault are keeping that team in F1 is because they have a contract with a double world champion.
Brawn had people who were determined to keep the team running, and they only just managed it. Flavio would probably say "that's enough" and go and focus on the football...
Like in nascar with only 2 guns and a few people?
Flavio might, but Pat Symonds won't. Can you say Symonds GP?
That is probably true. But perhaps Renault have realized the error of their ways whenever they'd pull out in the past? They have admitted that pulling out in 1997 was a big mistake.
Yup. I'd say 2 for tyres, 2 for fuel and the jack men. 6 mechanics as opposed to like 30. And what's wrong with using the radio to signal when to go rather than a lollipop? Indy doesn't use one. NASCAR doesn't use one (those overhanging numbers don't count), sportscars don't use one. V8 Supercars don't use one.
I would say have one tyre changer per wheel, two refuellers (because that thing is heavy), plus the chief mechanic looking over the car. What more do you need? Do you need 25 guys there? No.
Exactly! Like I said above you'd need 6 or 7 at most. And it is a cost cutting measure. Less mechanics have to travel to the circuit - I think.
But then they'd have to lay off people. That would mean their claim of being a cottage industry in itself that employs a lot of people would be weakened.
I was thinking about the cost cutting... Most of the guys in the stops also have other jobs which are not replaceable. Team truckie, the guy who sorts the tyres before the race, the guy who sorts the spares. There was a thing about it in Autosport last season showing a pic of a Red Bull and explaining what each man did. I think there were nearly 30 people I could knock it down to 15 or so.
They ran a historic meeting with yellow flags permanently showing at the area where the tunnel is. It's a complete farce. They should not have been given any safety certificate never mind one that allows such a stupid situation.
FPA and F3 meetings been cancelled and most other meetings look like its going the same way too, its stupid
Hmm... it's possible...
But this time they might have no choice...
I'd disagree with one mechanic per wheel. One per side would be better and more exciting. It puts more pressure on and makes it a proper race to get the wheels changed. Plus if I'm honest, some of those mechanics could do with the run-around ;)
The Renault board's decision is not going to be affected by whether or not Alonso is signed. If it makes financial and political sense they will be there if it doesn't they will quit.
I have been arguing that for years.
Reckon we need a petition?
No re-fuelling. One or two to change tyres. Pneumatic jacks operated by the tyre changers. One lollipop man for safety. Radios can fail
No, F1 still has to have the fastest tyre changes in town. And I'd lose the jackmen and install air pressure rams in the cars, as they have in IndyCar and touring car. They aren't used now because of the weight - so make it mandatory.
But there are a lot of guys just sitting there not doing much "just in case" something happens. Keep the fire extinquishers, lose the others.
Petitions don't work. The only way it will happen if someone convinces Bernie it was his idea.
at least it's not snowing :)
With no re-fuelling, they'd have to increase the size of the tanks which means an increase in the minimum weight of the car, wouldn't it?
Looking at some of the shots on F1.com, it really was a lovely sunny day at the circuit. Reminds me a bit of Barcelona when it's in the same conditions.
Yup to both - feeling a bit grotty myself....
I'm going to have to disappear to try and wake myself up. Was supposed to be playing golf this afternoon (in my new BrawnGP hat!) but Dad got delayed so we've cancelled. I'll be popping to the shop then doing lots of college stuff, then I'll come back here and catch up before writing lots of words on the blog.
Looking at the car comparison on BAT, BMW got a large upgrade as opposed to Williams.
Grrrrr.. :(
Cheating software conspiring against the Williams team...
I can assure everyone now that, despite controlling the game, I have not touched the game options.
This is what I don't understand - how they can they work out which teams will "improve" throughout the season when the BATracer season will be over within the next couple of real life races.
The upgrade system is random, so there is no guarentee every team will get one and there is no specific order. If your car does receive one, then consider yourself fortunate.
Ahh OK, I thought it was some sort of reflection of real life but random makes far more sense.
Just had a gander at the upgrades in the game options, and BMW's upgrade is 3 times bigger than Williams'.
The carset is made as realistic as possible, but it's not fully realistic on things like upgrades. If it was, then the McLaren would have a sizeable upgrade in China due to the diffuser and front wing this weekend, Toyota would have received a small one as well for their front wing and so would Brawn, Ferrari and Williams for their new minute aero details.
You can change the upgrades if you own the game as you wish, so in effect I have the power to take away Williams and BMW's upgrades and level the field again. But I wouldn't do that. Besides, the upgrades have only made both cars merely thousandths faster, although the BMW's gives it nearly a hundredth.
I'm feeling tormented by the tennis right now, for once I don't have a preferred player and would like both Verdasco and Djokovic to win
Could you please make Renault better some how, we're just rubbish, both me and Sean can barely make it into Q2 :(
Do the changes that teams make get added in this game? Or are their no technical changes made mid game?
oo you've reminded me to try and tune in for Murrays match... whenever that is.
I think it was at 10:30 this morning
If renault do better then so do we...if they od rubbish....then so do we...
Things aren't looking good then.
yeah i know, i swear he has another one today.. cause of the rain the other day..maybe not... actually, i will investigate.
he's playing again in a few hours against Davydenko. Lots of players having two matches today because of yesterdays rain.
i read somewhere his match was delayed until Wednesdays but that can't be right, surely?!
according to my (free! legal!) stream he is playing at 1.30am Aus time, and its 10.50pm at the moment.
Free legal streams amaze me, I'm so used to hunting down F1 streams that still work every weekend.
yeah i thought so :) thank you. i must remember to watch that, i love watching tennis, i'd be watching it now but can't cause i've got to get at least a bit of textiles done today.
oo thanks, will be watching that.
i love it too, going to the Australian Open was a fantastic experience, although tickets to the final are almost as much as tickets to the 4 day F1 weekend. Hence why I only coughed up the $$ to go to a semi :D
wow. i've wanted to go to Wimbledon for ages but i'm always at school and can't get the day off :(
Minimum weight does not include fuel.
from what I hear Wimbledon is almost impossible to get tickets to Centre Court which is a shame. Tickets here were still on sale for all the big matches right up to the day of the games.
Melbourne has a big screen in a square in the city where they play big sports events and the atmosphere is awesome. This was the crowd for the Nadal v Federer final. One of my friends watched the Grand Prix there this year, I wish they showed all 17 races!
In the 1986 game the Pirelli tyres had about 10 or 12 upgrades during the season
But the fuel tank would be a tad heavier due to the increased size, wouldn't it?
wow, that looks awesome! :D
Whereas in the 2009 carset, there is only chassis upgrades because there is only one tyre supplier and all engine development is frozen.
The main weight gain would be making the car a little bigger to carry the weight. The tank itself would make very little difference.
that's only about a third of the crowd too, I had to turn up early to get a good spot :) Everyone brings blankets and has wee picnics, I love it.
Probably been mentioned, but Briatore tried to get Jenson for this year:
http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=45585
Reminder for Lou.
NASA TV is now showing the shuttle rolling out of the VAB
it has, but i'll never tire of reading button's response :)
The VAB is the Vehicle Assembly Building which is the biggest enclosed space on the planet or something similar. It takes a few hours to reach the launch pad as the crawler travels at 1 mph ish.
From around 6pm tonight for about 5 hours NASA TV will be showing both launch pads with the shuttles on them. This is the last time ever that two shuttles are scheduled to be on the pads together. This is history.
:D thank you!
Speaking of Pirelli, might go along to watch the Pirelli International Rally if I can sometime tomorrow
sounds like we should celebrate with a game of eye-spy.
OK but no-one is allowed to have a bat with a broken wing.
if i make it to 6pm then i'll happily join in :)
:D
I have the most threatening uni finance forms ever in front of me. The very first thing it says is 'You MUST fill out these forms IN BLOCK CAPITALS ONLY', which is just basically screaming at me at the loudest voice possible!
I'm worried later in the booklet I'll find 'Turn over the page ONLY WHEN I INSTRUCT YOU TO' or 'Sir please step away FROM THE ALARMS' or something
:D
They are pretty much the worst forms you will ever have to fill in. Have you had your inside leg measurement done recently? You'll probably be needing it.
Guess what came through my e-mail from F1 Racing
'What question do you want to ask Timo Glock?'
Hmmm?
Ooooooh.
This is my third time doing them because they just send the same thing every year... it's so annoying...
:D
Brawn, Williams and Toyota are all still faster than BMW :P
Photocopier?
I wish I had that idea last year now. They send the exact same forms in March or so each year and it's always filling out the same stuff that you can't find the information of, ie. course module numbers, reference numbers to module leaders, indidivudal grade allocation marks, really ridiculous stuff that has no indiciation to your financial situation with uni.
unlike your inside leg measurement.
I'm off guys, my alarms going off at 6:10 tomorrow! :(
I may see you tomorrow morning if I have time, and I may see you at qualy if I'm back.
Lukeh: can you not fill them out online?
See ya Sean
see ya sean.
Nice little website bug for Mr C. I went to download the desktop doohickey (I'm using a different computer this weekend), and I had a message that the security certificate was invalid for https://www.sidepodcast.com/desktop/sidepodcastdesktop.air.
See ya Sean!
Woot!! *dances* i've just received this email
Wohoo!! i feel a little better now :)
*giggles*
that is not the url you are looking for ;)
we haven't bought an ssl certificate (because they're overpriced and we don't do ecommerce). the address you need is:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/desktop/sidepodcastdesktop.air
apologies if i gave out the wrong info at some point.
Go Lou! *Is Jealous*
Ditto. Have fun with it though ;)
Don't worry. Just thought I'd let you know. It was the link in the wiki that I used, so I'll edit it now.
I copied that from Mr C. His fault. :)
And Mr C got it from Steven Roy, who got it from Lou. :p
That's meant to be a smiley, but it didn't work. Probably got it wrong.
haha
Lucky you! Would very much like to attend one of these recordings. I'm rubbish at getting round to applying for tickets. Just A Minute will never be the same now that Clement has departed; ditto I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue without Humph. Just goes to show that you should never put things off.
Some forecasts are saying rain for Sunday. In Buemi's words, "Noooooo!"
In someone else's words: "Hand gestures... speak volumes..."
I was very naughty yesterday: showed that YouTube clip to the editor of a weekly motoring magazine. He has now sent a link to the people who do SniffPetrol...
you should become a member of the applause store (tis free) and they send you emails when you can apply for tickets (which are also free) for shows you want to attend :)
How about "Why do you appear to have GLOCKDOG written in gothic script on the back of your crash helmet?"
Interview with Rubens on BBC site. He reckons if the team had gone with the tires he wanted he would have won in Malaysia. Is there anyone that doesn't think they should have won that race?
no less than the montage deserves.
i feel bad for darren though :(
Jenson did a good job though... :(
kovi.
haha :D
"If I hadn't made a complete mess of the first lap, I'm certain I would have won"
okay i'm starting to see really bad now.. so i think i'll go have a little lie down, speak to you lot later ;)
Have a good rest lou
see ya lou.
R.G will love me for this - F1 Racing Reader's Panel just sent me an e-mail and they're taking questions for......Timo Glock! :D
I know, I mentioned it earlier ;)
:)
Hmm, what to ask? I bet there's gonna be a ton of e-mails asking "WHY DID YOU LET LEWIS THROUGH?!" :D
I'm thinking about
'How super duper, ultra brilliantly awesome are you?'
It's better than
'I'v'e got a friend who really likes you, he, I mean she would like to see you. Is that possible?'
Sad, but probably true.
What about just... "call me?"
i guess i should stop sending those now then ;)
:D
Yeah, but we don't have each others numbers (yet), so its best to do it subtly
"could you hold up page 22, take a photo and drop.io it, please?"
Good point. Don't wanna seem too eager.
:D
"What do you think about Sidepodcast?"
"Do you have Franck's number?"
You can only ask that if I can ask for Le Sebs :D
:)
Maybe we should compile a list?
Dear Timo,
Can we have the following drivers phone numbers please........
i doubt he'd have ted's number?
We know that Lukeh would take Rubens/Rebuns/Ronald's/Russell's number anyday.
Gavin, Jeremy and Steven wouldn't mind fighting over Lewis's.
You can ask David Croft that in FP3
"How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
"What came first, the chicken or the egg?"
Goood idea. We'll text him.
"Do you have Ted Kravitz's number and if so can we have it please?"
Then we'll get no response, so we'll have to send another: "Pretty please?"
"Do you think you could have won the Malaysian GP?"
Dear Timo
I hear you have a girlfriend. I hear those things bring nothing but trouble and highly suggest that you get out of it before it gets worse. We dont want you losing your focus when racing now do we?
"With a cherry and coconut sprinkles?"
We get a chance to ask a current F1 driver anything we want, and this is what we all come up with...... :D
:D
hahaha
wait until we get to valencia.
:D
Hehehe.
Valencia?
:)
"Have you tried any of Jarno's wine and if so how is it?"
"Is there an actual Trulliometer?"
"What's it actually like being stuck in a Trulli Train?"
Trulli awful.
Im sorry, I couldn't help myself.
:D
erm:

Also a summary and the finished version here:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Naming+Corners
China doesn't have corner names, y'know...
Ahh, that
Oh no...
Methinks they should be named after Chinese food dishes :D
That are also the name of Chinese bands?
Erm...
One condition - one corner has to be called Kung Pow :D
As long as it's not songs that have China in the title, or Stuart will be back with his favourite one :)
:D
I'll leave that in your hands...
Must stop this now!
Where's the duck tape!
You must, otherwise you will accidentally write it into your book!
Is there anything worse than accidentally hitting refresh on the doohickey after it's been open all day? Even if I am up to date.
... a story told, a mind of his own, an omen for our time?
I'm jealous now! That'll be brilliant.
Oh jeez. I wonder if there is anything that can't be linked back to it.
When you come to read the chapter on FW07, look out...
I have a Weatherbug gadget on my Windows Sidebar which is set on the weather for Jiading, China, the area where the Shanghai circuit is. It gives me live weather updates so I can keep you up to date about the prospective conditions.
What's it say now?
Are you going to lve comment QI?
Sidepodcast - Probably the fastest buck passers in the world
13 degrees, with Saturday looking to have a high of 21 degrees, clear conditions.
Sunday looks like it's going to be mostly cloudy with sunny intervals, high of 21 degrees again.
They will have to re-start their campaign
No rain as yet then.
Doesn't look like it.
Would not just have been easier to ask Franck when you were speaking to him?
she wouldn't speak to him!
So she likes him a lot, but won't speak to him. Yup, typical crush.
Do you know how much Jenson charges to deliver cupcakes?
that's your question for glock??
Speak... to... him...? Are you mad?
Nope, but i hear Jules does them too
That's a good one!
She will need to write a note and carry it to any events where they may meet again.
Question for Glock:
Deal, or No Deal?
You think that is any less sensible than any of the other suggestions. At least we know the PR people won't have prepared an answer for that.
Wheres all this questions for Glock coming from?! I'm a bit confused
You watching it on C4 now :D
:D
What about for. 'Will you be my 'Get into the Paddock for free' Dad please. I really love you driving.'
I'm so addicted to this programme. I never get to see it on weekdays and somehow I've missed a lot of recent weekend ones too.
If the car in front is a Toyota how come you never win?
Will you change your name to Tim O'Glock?
How terrified are the board of Toyota at the prospect of pulling out after seeing what Brawn did?
thats quite genius
"How often do people mistake your surname and call Timo Clock?"
sorry. it wasn't disbelief, it was... you haven't quoted a comment and i'm checking what you're referring too. i got carried away with the question marks.
am now hoping the answer is "jenson no longer delivers since he new found success in races that don't finish properly, however i can do a great deal on postman pat ones".
Hark at your cynicism! They put their dictaphone next to yours and then sit in a corner. Even for important people like Ross Brawn.
"i know a guy thats just started out on the cupcaking business....his name is Mr C...some say...." hehe
:D
Mr C is a very clever man, but that would be the WORST business ever.
Just having me a piece of dark chocolate. I'm beginning to appreciate it more after watching that programme Willie's Chocolate Revolution. I'm savouring some Lindt 85% cocoa chocolate. Mmmm :D
I cupcake every 40 minutes is not going to make a profit.
i'm picturing pre-made cake mix all over the walls :D
Was his choc for Waitrose? It looked good. We had a Waitrose open here yesterday, replacing the Scummerfields, I may have to investigate - Bridport has gone upmarket!
Indeed it is. And I've had some! It's really really good :D
it wasn't pre-made. i mixed it and everything.
gah, all this talk of chocolate and cupcakes is making me hungry...
im either going to have a make a cake or some flapjack...hmm
did you weigh out the flour? sugar? all individually?
all except the icing ;)
hey everyone, i'm feeling more awake now, still feeling a little ill though :/
i think so? i was a long time ago. it wasn't pre-made though, otherwise it would have been a really short show.
:)
It was done on a live podcast. A pair of disembodied hands kept appearing in front of the camera with assorted cake stuff.
I've only tried his San Martin chocolate though, which is the Peruvian 70 bar. Still to try the Venezuelan 72 Rio Caribe. Hope he make a 100% cacao bar though. His chocolate is actually proper chocolate made with 100 year old machines the way it was and how it should be made. He actually did an experiment with some help from Brunel University and proved his cacao chocolate gives you more energy for longer when exercising than regular chocolate and that it encourages the body to burn off fat rather than what you've just eaten.
It wasn't a pre-made cake, but it was a cake mix. Only because I didn't want to have to supervise weighing of flour and mixing of butter whilst making a podcast at the same time. I was trying to minimise the mess.
technically all the ingredients were measured out already in the packet weren't they? you just added the egg and erm.. something else didn't you?
I think that's what they're trying to point out. It was a pre-made cake mix.
yeah, thats what i was meaning, premade cake mix. and frankly, i dont think any of us blame you ;)
it was still difficult though :(
;)
Stirring cake mix while holding the camera was never going to be easy
It worries me that i type in "pop screen" into ebay and it comes up with...
"Michael Ball - Stage And Screen (CD 2001)"
hmm
what were you looking for?
a pop shield lol
ahh :)
but some people had it on their listing as pop screen, so its not quite as much of an error as it sounds ehe
you could bend a coat-hanger and stretch some tights over it.
According to Joe - show title?
According to Joe Shanghai will be around for another 7 years
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/04/17/bernie-comes-calling/
Good. There's plenty worse circuits that have been on the calender for years, and despite it being quite similar to Bahrain and Malaysia, it sticks out the most of the 3.
I'd pick Sepang over Shanghai, but hey, personal preference, I guess.
In that case we'll leave China in your – oh, there I go again...
I'd pick Sepang as well.
Joe is doing another sidepodshow
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/04/17/lewis-ahead-in-shanghai/
Is Carol Decker your little China girl?
I'm sure Mr and Mrs C knew that already, but they're keeping us in suspense. I'm sure he has a LOT to say about them diffusers and Mr. Dennis.
I really only posted it because I didn't recognise the name of the person who asked him
good point. hi, vokstar! do say hi if you're here. :D
thank goodness there aren't too many China songs out there. I just fret for when we get to Japan. :P
That's when Gentlemen Take Polaroids...
hehe. as yet we still have to punch a skype-sized hole through the great firewall of china :)
a sidepodfirst you might say.
What time is the panel on Sunday, are we back to the roughly 7pm slot?
so you haven't been able to talk to him yet? Worst-case scenario, can't you call him via mobile?
i was thinking... kate bush?
That could get expensive
Nothing we haven't done before for the panel. Joe's thoughts are worth it, I'd think. ;)
we'll figure something out, don't worry. i have cold too so may have to spend the conversation passing notes across the table :)
panel should follow debrief, assuming i don't feel worse, 9pm.
may be delayed until mon/tues though.
It looks like despite the hype in this week's Autosport Mansell's boy has not greatly improved during his year's in the USA. I expect Jamie Alguersuari to stroll this championship but that gap is ridiculous.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74544
Get DT to GRRRRRRRRR his way through it.
Okey dokey. Trying to work out where I am and when, and whether to be on it. :-)
:D WIN!
Ah! I didn't know it was on this weekend *Adds himself to wiki list*
Let me in your window-oh!
for the moment, assume the show will be sponsored by lemsip and we'll be live at 9pm. has anyone heard from host, ollie?
And he's the better of the 2 siblings, and yet he's behind Fairuz Fauzy. Fauzy! :O
This is quite a montage of 80s songs...
The maybe list is on the big side
Right that's exactly when Long Beach starts. Hmm.
it always has been - but so long as some of them pull through, we'll be fine.
Maybe best put Lou on standby if Ollie is not around
Not seen him on here in a while actually.
Dunno if she'll be up to it with her cold
I'm not sure it's her cold that would stop her doing it hehe
I'll let new folk on before me but I'll probably be around if needs be.
She'll be fine. Maybe actually easier being thrown in with little warning rather than worryinag about it for two weeks
According to the future hosts list Ollie is not available for the next few weeks

#38 - Scott Woodwiss said:
I’ve just been thinking about something. Looking back at the GTR2 PC game, F1 mods didn’t include full pit crews which meant there were only 2 mechanics changing all 4 tyres, one on each side. Could this not work for F1? It might make the racing more exciting because with less people working on the car, it’s more of a race to get the stop done which means more chances of mistakes. I reckon it could work, what about you guys?
sounds like a great topic for the daily post ;)
Am now watching today's practice at my dad's on the Red Button on his 42-inch TV :D
i know i have missed some things today, but does anyone thing Renault will add a diffuser?
add a diffuser for tomorrow that is.
I'll be watching the race on my dad's similar sized TV :-)
I'll be 'borrowing' his computer to get timing and comments.
Bit of a difference in some forecasts.
Autosport say Sunday will be sunny with some cloud cover.
BBC say Sunday will have heavy rain.
Please no rain.
I do not think you need it this season.
Sorry, Scott But I would rather see Steven's Roy's idea of no Pitstops whatsoever for the race than yours. The chief problem is that the tracks are to short for your idea to work. Your car would be lapped, and since the last person to make a pass on the leader to regain his lap back got sucker punched by the leader of the race afterwards when was the last attempt made to unlap oneself?
Your idea is not new, indeed it set the stage for one of F1 classic cases involving a botched pitstop of Fangio at the old Nurbergring, in which he had to drive like a suicide bomber to regain first place from 7 miles down. That bring Nurburgring, he was still on the lead lap. Now a days - Your two laps down and out of contention, unless you are at Spa, in which case you are 1 lap down and being shown the blue flag...
The Times Online have impressed me over the past few months with their F1 content.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/
Especially Ed Gorman. Wasn't aware of him until I checked out the site.
I was charged with fetching Mr C's nachos after work but decided to come home for a quick sleep first. Was woken by the phone. So here I am, zero nap, zero nachos. Not a very successful hour.
have moved comments back to daily thread. the "button thing" has been removed and the wiki unmentionables updated.
no nachos?
Not yet.
before sunday?
Promise.
awww. mr c. hearts you!
What's the "button thing"?
If I hear of it once more, I will scream. *not saying*
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/The+un-mentionables
Oh, that one :-)
I thought it was a button you press in Doohickey.
i heart the unmensionables list
Ta. On Wednesday I forgot to ask about Ted Kravitz' name.
I was mega disappointed when I found out. I have since tried to blank it from my mind.
Bob Smith?
I think it's another one of those things that is better not knowing because it will just spoil it.
Anyway. Time I wrote some bloggy stuff, having entirely failed to do any college work.
That would actually be better.
Priorities :)
:-)
I just can't sit down and do it, but the blog stuff just appears from out of the keyboard.
Same here but with uni work. But my excuse is because of fainting and feeling dead in general. As Lou said earlier, I blame bernie.
Since I seem to have not emailed the correct version of my project from work I'll do that Monday, so the big cloud over my head I've been avoiding can be avoided and I can do some smaller stuff... might do a quick hit of that, then food, then blog.
ah what?...
If only.
Nobody forced you to watch it.. I went to bed instead. But that's because I don't get the fascination with watching practice unless I'm trackside.
Dunno if you guys have seen these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG10GmYV888
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzHtoO1N8o4
Very good, especially for such a short piece.
yes they did, I forced me to watch it :D
:/
Just had another go on GRID and did a lap of 1:24.59. :)
I enjoy FP1, but FP2 aswell was a bit too much lol
Heheh :-)
In saying that, if they weren't on overnight and I was able to watch them, I would actually watch them.
Oh for goodness sake....
Grrrr!!!
I'm glad you're not doing a game I've got, and that my wheel broke. Otherwise I'd throw the college work AND the blog away until I'd beaten the time..
No that's Mr C's real name.
OOOPS edit that
grrr!
Spoilers!!!
Amen brother. I enjoyed Practice 1, but when I heard that it wasn't Ant and Dave doing Practice 2, I thought "Sod this" and went to bed. Maurice Hamilton and his bizarre pronunciation of Klien can get lost.
Anyone who beats Scott is my hero. It's like beating Ferrari.
Never miss Bruno Mantovani
I know! Kly-nah?! Coming soon to a radio near you, Fordorndo Alfonso.
lol. evening all
It's faster than your lap?
w00t! :D
Is that a maybe?
No it's not, it's way more difficult!
Wow. The new Force India website is... bright!
You do have to harness the power of Bellamyesque New Born solo to get such an achievement. Will never happen again personally.
Evening
hey ya :)
We haven't had a Friday night driving game everyone could play for ages. Now I know there are some karting specialists round here but I am sure the others will soon get to grips with it
miniclip.com/games/go-karts/en/
www.miniclip.com/games/go-karts/en/
works better with ws
My best time came while listening to Zero7, which is about as far from New Born as you can get!
Yay! :)
Although beating Ferrari isn't that hard this year!
The full video of this was playing in the background when I set the time so maybe it might help :P
are we doing a single lap time?
that's a - i'm currently wrapped up in a duvet wondering why i ever thought staying up till 4:30 or whatever it was, was a good idea, and wondering where on earth i got this horrible horrible cold from and you want me to host a panel, that i haven't even got much voice to ask the questions with... let alone thinking of them....
Hamilton quits after positive drugs test
http://tinyurl.com/cmry96
appoligise is none of that actually makes sense... we have no lempsip so i'm surviving on tea and some lucozade.
:(
sounds rubbish, and out of nowhere too damn cold. Still blaming bernie? Although i'm annoyingly looking at the empty podpanel hosting with a wonder. Please note this is not me saying i am volunterring or saying i will, simply wondering!! :P
gah!
Oh my goodness, if i ever meet you, im going to hit you for that lol,
:)
I'll give it a try and tell you my lap time then! :)
It makes sense. So who is next on the standby list.
i heard "yes". steven?
no! bad mr c!
There is a list of hosts but they are dropping like flies. Under sidepodrules you have just volunteered to go on the future host list.
I just couldn't resist the headline and had to see the reaction. Must try it elsewhere too.
I'd definitely go on future hosts list. I'm just not so sure if i'll do this one.
Steven.....what part of the game are we doing? I'd suggest Quick race as that always comes up with the same track?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Driving+Songs :D
According to the future hosts list the only other host is Jackie then Lukeh
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Future+Hosts
I thought it was hilarious, but it came to quick after the "Button injured in horrific F1 accident " to be fooled.
i've dented ollie to see if he's around. it may be that's he's fine to do it, but could equally be having a busy week.
Click Play. Same track but with opponents. Much more fun
Get some questions ready just in case Lukeh
i'm going to blame gavin for this... because of the meet up, which was his idea i believe, i was out of the house for hours something was bound to happen ;)
:D
actually i blame the science museum. the heat in that place must've been a breeding ground for every germ in london. couple that with the air con on full in the next hall down, and we're all gonna take a hit.
what's surprising is christine is still standing.
tis a good game, but for some reason really laggy
you should complain and get your money bac...oh wait, it was free :P hehe
That's how they get ya.
In years to come there'll be an exhibit...
It'll have Jense's burnt remains from Interlagos last year alongside the Championship winning Brawn of 2009 with a question...
What links these two cars?...
The answer is of course....
£300m....
yeah couple that with very very little sleep and i suppose it was obvious i'd come down with something... i'm hoping i'll feel better in the morning once i've had some sleep..
i cannot wait to see what im like at 5pm tomorrow evening!
i've got to set up some lighting for the concert at school tomorrow evening... if i'm not feeling better that should be interesting :)
Should've added that I meant Ferrari circa 2004, but y'know.
Well I hope you get better real quick.
Ooh of course.. fingers crossed your a lot better by then. Works nothing, I can just keel over in the staff room and noone would notice/ask ;)
I feel crap myself, had a numb drilling headache all day since I got up at 12 (Take THAT Practice 2). Gonna shower now, see if that does any good. Damnit China.
Errr...
Not planning on watching FP3 then lou?...
yeah i am...
oooh brilliant!
I didn't find that when I came across it earlier. Maybe just a busy time
Seeing the Brawns doing well should be a bit of a tonic.
So are you going to skip quali or the race so that you are good for the concert.
Tweets coming in: Helio Castroneves has been acquitted in his tax trial.
Spiderman's comin' back! Bad news for Will Power though.
Back to bed straight after qualifying then!
okay i'm going to say that the new Brawn merchandise is going to be out sometime around the 16th June :) i shall explain my thinking behind this, i've just received a newsletter thing from jenson's website which included a promotional code to get 5% off of all current Brawn merchandise which expires on the 16th June. The new Brawn Merchandise is meant to be out in time for the British GP weekend which starts on the 19th June.. almost perfect timing. So yeah... random piece of possible news there,
i waffle much more when i'm ill sorry about that.
Not necessarily - rumour has it they will be three Penskes this w/e.
Hope so. Be a bit harsh on Power if he was kicked out now. Be great to see Helio back though :)
nope. the concerts on the saturday evening, plus i don't need to do much during the concert... it's me being ill and tired climbing the ladders to rig up the lights i'm a tiny bit worried about :) but i have all saturday to sleep.
There is CURRENT Brawn merchandise?....
yep... tis only interim stuff atm
http://www.henrilloydstore.com/microsite/category.asp?cat_id=243&procat_id=248
Ohhhh the tennis is on... completely forgot...
Love the bit about unprecedented demand...
Henri Lloyd must be tres happy...
Searched on http://www.twitscoop.com/ All say he was acquitted.
lou... I have a question...
The unprecedented demand for Brawn stuff isn't entirely down to you....
Is it?....
I don't think Helio will be racing this weekend. Practice has already started in Long Beach.
<blockquote>The unprecedented demand for Brawn stuff isn’t entirely down to you….</blockquote>
Probably down to the fact that the team didn't exist until 10 weeks ago so there was no demand for something that didn't exist. A bit like the demand for invisible gold mountains now.
sadly not. i am yet to be in the fortunate position to be able to afford such attire. i have an awesome non official brawn gp keyring though! :D
You know, I'm pretty sure Franck doesn't have any official keyring merchandise either. *cough, hint*
hehe i'll get in contact with the maker of the keyring and see what i can do :P
.....Lukeh!!
:P
I think he went into hiding just after he used the word volunteer.
Hehehe.
Hey chaps. Back from training/hacking people down. I do find my self being a very dirty player out of goal.
Sooo, did I miss much?
Yes, you were volunteered to host the next panel
Ahh crap. ;)
Note to self : Never leave spc without taking it with you
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00592-jpg
Other than that you didn't miss much
:D
niceeeee
:D
:D
Love it :)
hehe :)
Oh by the way Lou, did you catch the Murray match?
yep.. well most of it. poor him, it looked like his hand was really sore. I hope it's better for tomorrow.
you don't have a link to that utterly brilliant jenson smiling pic at all do you lou? I can't find a link anywhere desite reading through comments :(
No Bruno in DTM, what's he playing at then?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74548
Le Mans Series.
and the 24 Hours.
They only have 5 races and one of those was the other week. He can't have just turned down a year of full time racing with Mercedes to pin his hopes on a random F1 drive turning up, can he? Does he know something?
ALMS, USF1, signed by an F1 team that is unfriendly to Merc
Strangely i think he's made the right decision....DTM can be a real career killer
Finished 3rd though, so in fairness he's doing something right - I think.
I thought he was hanging his hopes on trying again with Brawn - in which case those Merc connections could be handy.
Yeah, look at Ralf.
Oooooh, combine two of my favourite things:
The Big Picture + Baby Animals = http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/04/scenes_from_the_zoo.html
I guess he could replace Rubens next season. Depends.
we'll actually i think he did that to himself
Meh, his career's still down the pan anyways.
awwww, the little baby penguin and the baby gorilla lying on the back of a parent! So cute!
USF1 did say they are keeping an eye on Rubens...
A driver as experience as him would be very useful to them.
Wise move
Absolutely. And Bruno to Brawn next year is very possible...
That could prove to be the kickstart to his career he needs. A car as good as the Brawn (here's hoping) might just make him a future champion.
Depends if Brawn are staying with Merc or switching to another supplier next year who will give them a better deal. Right now Brawn are third in line for Merc stuff and FIF1 have a far better deal.
I'm already predicting the answer, but may as well ask. Anyone up for Skype tonight or not?
How can there be a better deal than Mercedes? It's the best engine on the grid. Why give it up?
And hopefully not the other way - putting too much pressure on him too soon, thought the name Senna will always bring pressure. A year in an STR would be good for him I reckon. Let him get upto speed like with Vettel.
Because FIF1 have Merc engine, gearbox, KERS McLaren people etc etc and Brawn get the engine
Merecdes might not want to supply three teams. They only did it in the first place to help save the team...
I'm still a bit puzzled as to why he's not in a testing role with them this season at least.
Yeah, and look at the success it's bringing them.
No testing
How stupid I am.
Yeah. It would be beneficial to bothwith a nice bit of publicity for the team. That being said of course, he'd never get to drive the bloody car with the test ban.
That and they already have two test drivers.
Yes but they have a contract with FIF1 to be the second team. Brawn is not going to accept being third in line. Right now while the team is flying high he has to takes steps to convert that ino long term success and being behind FIF1 in the queue is not going to achieve that.
Does the fact that a giraffe gives birth standing up do a better job of disproving evolution or God/intelligent design?
You would have thought that with Brawn in line to possibly win the title, should they do so Mercedes would want to increase their support.
Philosophical Friday?
Besides, by suppling Brawn it's helping Mercedes. They're getting income from selling them customer units.
Where'd that come from? ;)
But it takes away attention from McLaren + Force India.
I see what you mean about Force India, but McLaren have too much attention on them at the moment. Unwanted attention at that.
It shows that those that gave birth lying down died out....
So it proves evolution .... and that giraffes are intelligent design...
They are, after all, even more beautiful than pandas...
I don't know if giraffes are into religion though... I've never asked...
I don't mean media attention, I mean attention to building their engines.
Not as cuddly though.
I forgot about that. Must be something about how my brain works at this time of the week.
sorry for the delay - here it is http://twurl.nl/zcqnvr
Christine's picture link
But if Brawn don't end up with Mercedes engines for 2010, what's their alternative?
BMW
Meanwhile I'm sat here watching a 90s scifi show about American marines blowing the crap out of aliens.
Cosworth? That optional standard engine Max was on about? Was that for 2010?
Really? I dunno. I was thinking about Toyota but then you get exactly the same situation with Mercedes. Ferrari's got reliability issues still, I think and as for Renault, it depends on the car. In a good car it's not so bad a la Red Bull, but in a bad car it's awful a la the factory effort.
no worries :) just tried drawing it in a cartoony style but it came out more like a rough unshaved Vettel...
You have to remember though that those who choose it are running an engine that'll be 4 years old. Unless the FIA allows for it to be brought up to spec, those that run it are going to be off the pace from the get go in my opinion.
Hmmm...
So that's Sophie Dahl versus Linda Evangelista....
A four year old engine that wasn't particularly reliable or competitive at the of that season.
...and here's the only one I really liked out of what I did.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00593-jpg
why did it have to be him!
May I recommend a good site for desktop wallpapers:
http://www.f1grandprix.it/
Not as far off the pace as they would be without an engine.
But only just.
hehe :)
That is very cool! If such a word can be used to describe Bernard.
Evening all! We have just landed back in Denmark and we are on the train home. It's good to be back in the land of the Viking and we are both tired. Mrs Goat says hi to you all - we had a great trip and thoroughly enjoyed the sidepod meetup even though the museum was pants ;-)
hello mr gavin :)
Hi Gavin, good flight?
Yeah it was. Easyjet were very good but we did have to shuffle some things around as we were over the weight limit - we got there in the end but we figured out that we bought 15 kilos of extra stff home :-D first thing we did when we arrived was get a good old hotdog and a beer! ;-)
Just look at Gary Paffett.
Nah, he did that when he went to Toyota. Toyota's the retirement home for drivers.
Indeed. Still want him in f1 but I don't see it happening :(
Hey Gavin, good to see you got back ok.
Was he really ever that young?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3UpBKXMRto
I suppose we shoudl be grateful that he learnt that other haircuts were available. ;)
Sounds good! I'm usually guilty of going home with more than I went with too!
hullo mrs. goat.
He spent endless days pounding round Silverstone with the CVT and then when it was about ready to race it was banned.
Hi Gavin and Mrs Goat
Morning people!
It's it really odd thing CVT. Makes the cars just drone as it holds the engine at peak torque/power
Still prefer the sound of a proper gearbox though. Especially when linked to a DFV. ;)
Heya Sean.
And nice to see you back safe Gavin.
Did anyone see Sir Jackie Stewart on HARDtalk last night? If not, I urge you to watch it - he handled some very prickly questions about RBS very well, IMO...
The whole of that clip was spent waiting for a gear change. It's like waiting for someone to clear their throat. There is something unnatural about the sound of an engine note that doesn't change
I'll put it in the Daily.
He seems to be on a lot of things, was he plugging his book?
Saw the last 15 minutes before FP1
From the sidepodmeetup or just London in general? ;-)
It has just come out in paperback.
;)
Don't mention the meetup to me...
From London in general.
wassup sir?
I shoulda put a ;) after that
For anyone that fancies a bit of music, another Green Day song from the upcoming album:
Viva La Gloria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRHMBO38y-k
In the words of Murray, faaaaaaaaaaantastic!
Why?!
ahh, cool. just checkin.
apart from x2 podcasts, many pictures, some video and a few blog posts... and a couple of comments... we'll never speak of it again.
Certainly did.
For those who missed it, it's on iPlayer - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00k8zsv/HARDtalk_Jackie_Stewart/
...what was your favourite bit of the meetup gavin?
That is good. ;)
:P
Ah cog. I'm back 5 minutes and I'm already posting in the wrong thread :-(
The first 5 minutes were about the book, the rest were Jonathan Dimbleby trying to tear him a new one over RBS. The best bit was when Dimble asked him why he moved to Switzerland after he became famous, and Jackie replied that he didn't want to pay 93% tax when he could be dead next week and his family would be left with nothing!
s'okay. r.g's got our back. comments now moved.
Meeting all of you guys of course! I think the sidepodpicnic podcast was a close second though!
You lot are a terrific bunch of people and Wednesday proved why I love being part of this commmunity so much!
Couldn't have said it better myself.
You were looking for a name for that podcast weren't you? You should call it Sci-dpodcast.
steven, too answer your earlier dent, looks like mediatemple did in fact kill spc:
http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/2009/04/17/2009-04-17-gs-grid-service-cluster01-availability/
soz, i was away, but thanks for the headsup.
A bit of a parody i was thinking on
Sidepod in the Park
Would you still like me to write a guest post comparing fast forward to the Ferrari store?
the unedited version is in drop.io, should you have 20mis to kill :)
iPod friendly?
aww you make us blush :P
umm... something in my head tells me that sentence should mean something to me?
How drunk were you???
It was about two minutes max from trying to post a comment to everything being back to normal
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/technical-difficulties-jpg
Whoever put that up, genius! Fankoo :)
:D
Mr C, do you remember that 20 quid you promised me in the comments?
You were with him. You should know
it's an mp3: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sidepodpark-meetup-mp3
hehehe :D so... Mr C what can you remember about the meet up, i'm sure we can fill you in on the rest ;)
can you find me that comment?
everything. except leaving the pub and that thing gavin just mentioned.
Yes them comments. If I post it now can someone move it back to Wednesday's so I'll find it
It's cool with me if you're not keen on the idea anymore - I will drop.io some photos anyway though ;-)
no, no. it's sound brilliant. we love guests posts.
what's fast forward?
You weren't drunk then!!
ahahah
please tell me you're joking...
i love this, its quite amusing
swear to god. is it a shop?
Oh people, it's too funny to watch his confusion.
this is fun
http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/galleries/fast_forward.aspx
ring any bells?
It was after I mentioned that I thought that I got more from the Ferrari store than the exhibit
The name of the exhibit?
ahhh, this is great. :)
hehehehe if you don't mind me asking...when did you start drinking?
oh!!
oops.
:D :D :D
Did you not think of using google?
in that case sir. yes, i really would like a guest post, because i have no idea how the two compare... even if you already explained it once (or more).
I think it's the owl again
And that proves how pantstastic the exhibit was...
Hey, Gavin welcome back, glad you and Mrs Goat got back home safely :D
pantstastic .. I love that!
You were more bothered about defending a certain driver IIRC...
Mr C didn't you see the massive writing on the wall... saying 'Fast Forward, 20 ways F1 is changing our world.'
I'm pretty sure Gavin told us about the Ferrari store like, right after we left the museum.
oh god... who?
nope.
Dave Gorman and Johnny Vegas deciding whether something is genius or not. What kind of parallel universe does that make sense in.
I thought the flying tin foil cylinder thing hanging in space part of the museum was more impressive than the f1 exhibit... and the dalek engines. :D
Plus a spaceman! or astronaut!
Thanks - just a few more minutes on the train and then a short taxi ride to go... :-)
A certain driver who would definitely be too heavy to use KERS if he were still in F1..
i remember!!
He defended that guy?
My first thought the Argentinian, Brambilla. Think that was his name anyway.
They were both Italian
Ah the man they called the 'Pampas Bull'? Nope, but style points are awarded to you, sir!
sure. anyone who runs schumi off the road will always be a hero in my book.
anyone.
I am confused. Vittorio Brambilla was the Monza Gorilla and his brother Tino also raced.
Because the car in front is being driven by Jarno Trulli.
Most Argies are, or their families are. Even their Spanish dialect is heavily influenced by it..
You give a good point sir. A very good point.
but Mr C it was all over the wall... look
http://www.mclaren.com/latestnews/images/science-museum-3.jpg
:D
Oops.
:( me no see.
Nice. I'll go to the uh.........style shop with those. :P
Giraffes are more likely to be religious because they are closer to God than most other animals.
hey look there was a mclaren on the ceiling too!
i saw that!!
But they were not Argentinian. They were Italian from Italy
Haha :D
:( well at least you saw the carbon fibre stairs ;)
I'm failing to find historical video of space shuttles, just some robot things gathering basketballs :s
The Pampas Bull was Jose Froilan Gonzales who was Argentinian from South America.
It has been on for hours despite all the bull on their website. I have had it in the corner of my screen for about 4 hours
Yeah sorry I got the wrong guy. I was thinking of Frolian Gonzalez. Wasn't Brambilla called the Monza Gorilla because a gorilla is also a term for a guy who tends to only be good at one circuit?
Too heavy for KERS?
Fat Brummy with a dodgy moustache?
Heh, just remembered the chat we had about how neither of us ever liked schumi, but how we'd both warmed to him since he retired. I also remember a couple of children running into you while we were talking.
Not that I know of. He was as strong as a horse so it may have been something to do with that combined with having what was perceived to be an unsophisticated driving style. The term used then for such drivers was rock ape so the gorilla thing evolved from that I think.
No but I used him as a counter point. Mr C was talking about Montoya. He gave a good argument about how a certain person ruined his career.
I've found a still image.
Colonel Sanders?
:D
And Ronald McDonald?
I think it's about time he told me what's in that secret recipe of his.
You're less likely to find out me's real name than the KFC recipe. :)
So you just have to get Col.Sanders quite drunk then.
I'm off guys, see ya later. Maybe and the end of qualy if I'm lucky.
laters
Bye Sean
He's not Argentinian either ;-)
Myself and Cian are doing our own Grid laptime challenge. Taking Courage C65s around Spa. Not driven these before, should be interesting.
The "Prat who Dances" is innocent! w00t!
They're Le Mans series cars right?
They are indeed :) A nice distraction from thesis typing
I'm gonna be sad when the grid chllenges changes sunday. I can only drive the current F3 or whatever cars :(
Who's choosing next weeks?
After 5 laps, I manage a 1:54.87. I love the cockpit view in those cars.
Was gonna ask you the same thing. :P
Seeing as you started it, you sort out who's doing when.
I vote F3000 cars at nurburgring ;)
1.53.25 come on Joe, catch up :p
i'm not going to try and be clever and stay up again so i'm off to bed, hopefuly i'll be able to get up in about 5 hours time ;) speak to you later ;) night!! x
*goes to do more laps*
bye lou, i'll hopefully see you for qualifying
night lou :)
night lou
I'll see you guys in the morning too, I'll be about for an hour with qualifying buildup but I leave for work at 7... brilliant timing! :P
night everyone, enjoy fp3 :)
Night Lou and Lukeh. :)
I'm off too - another silly o'clock start ;-)
Hope we can find some feeds guys!
have i ever mentioned how much of a legend joe is?
we sorta beat the great firewall of china. sorta. more soon, phew.
Hush you :P
Maybe we should have the winner of this week choose next weeks for now.
Night Lou, Lukeh and Gavin.
Must.go.faster...
Night Gavin. :)
Excellent! Isn't that supposed to be very hard to do?
it was!
Oh! Well done then.
Remember how I said the other day how I seem to be able to write blog posts quickly? Why isn't it doing that today?
get angry :)
1:52.85
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/8049/dsc00369ocy.jpg
Think that's the best I can do.
About the Chinese GP? I have very few emotions about the Chinese GP. It just exists.
And I can't get angry about Long Beach, other than the crappy cars that'll be there this year. I'm just glad it survived the war.
What time shall we set for entering your lap times? 6.00pm?
hmph, i demand a stewards enquiry. couldnt improve on 1.53.25
4 seconds off the world record, not bad at all.
easy. no-one ever turns up. it's in the middle of nowhere and we're getting up at crazy hours of the day to fill bernie's pockets.
in fact, half of sidepodcastcommunity are sick due to bernie choosing to race there. sick i tell ya ;)
I might c&p the last preview I did. It was only the other month.
:)
Am I right in thinking their contract runs out next year?
He doesn't care. He's probably invested in Reckitt Benckiser and Lofthouse
Can't remember who said it now but apparantly Bernie wants it for another seven years
oh god
Here actually
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/04/17/bernie-comes-calling/
I took the Bus Stop chicane so bad on one lap, that I hit the inside wall on the right side of the corner. True story.
October 16th
I'm a big fan of China. Definately beats Bahrain and is a bit more distinctive than Sepang.
Smooth
so it's th best of a bad lot? whoopie :)
You're wrong.
Did Tilke design Sepang?
maybe you should tell us why in a blog post...
I only want it to stay cos its one of the few tracks i can actually drive on racing games
Yep, first full circuit design after making a few changes to the A1-Ring
The first corner is interesting but the rest of the track doesn't really do it for me. Istanbul is the only Tilke-drome I like.
It would be all out of context.
And paradoxically it's his best work.
Damn I miss the A1-Ring.
I mean China is just a swirly first corner, a big F-off long straight, and a space station plonked on top of it. The rest of the track is just nothing.
Someone needs to nick his crayons so he cant force anymore utterly soul-less tracks on us
Random rant: Why do people keep comparing free practice times at a circuit to the pole time from last/previous years? Qualifying is done with fuel in the tanks and the outright time isn't representative of best lap time ever. Compare it to the fastest times in various sessions. This will pad out your article even more!
fair enough. ok, how about some filler content. circuit maps?
we're not though are we? q2 times, maybe.
I developed a new style in the last two IRL previews which I might port over to the F1 stuff. It uses subheadings and onboard laps.
You should only ever do Q2 vs Q2, or FL vs FL.
I am actually getting annoyed at TwitterFeed not picking up my stuff. It was ages ago I finished that one.
have you set it as low as it goes?
...and I forgot the track map link for Long Beach. Better fix that.
I'll check. I thought I did.
It's always worth a look though, isn't it? I mean, you can't ever say, gosh they're so slow in FP compared to quali, but isn't it a useful indicator of whether the teams are pushing hard or just testing stuff out?
Me too. :(
Sorry, not you. Other bloggers/journalists that should know better.
I know I have nothing to complain about compared to anyone who has had to get up at 2 in the morning etc. but I'm a bit grumbly this morning.
Please forgive? :-)
done ;)
and me.
ditto. and san marino, kinda
I just got thrown out of the studio until I cheered up, so we can all be forgiven together :)
I disagree.
So give me the full story, not just an attention seeking one liner.
ditto and montreal
Yeah, the best tracks are the unique ones.
forgiven too.
anyone else?
anyone specific in mind?
And the old Hockenhiemring.
San Marino only for the onboard laps to see the drivers pushing, and for the brilliant atmosphere.
Not for the racing.
yeah, there too. Bit of a common trend here.
Good, I thought I was the only one. Herman should take a good long look at that place. Simple but effective, something that could never be said about any of his circuits.
Yeah thats what i was getting at. The tifosi and the history of the place made it a bit special
Right, Cian and I are now doing F1000 cars around Spa.
yes and yes.
How so? You can't compare Friday to Saturday, the track changes too much.
If he looked at it, he'd *** it up. Done it with Hockenheim.
should be an extra * there but you know what I mean. :P
Well the twitterfeed just fired before I could log in to it to find out why it hadn't :-)
Oh, he would have to be restrained before he was let anywhere near it.
Two years without Suzuka has been the worst for me...
We've got it back, its were it belongs.
Does anyone have a suspicion that Heikki is running a different new front wing / diffuser too? I'm sure he wasn't as fast in Sepang or Melbourne
that's one solution!
I think they've done work on it though. I haven't seen what they've done yet, I'm hoping it's okay.
Lets just use Apple's standard name of John Appleseed here. I'm guilty of generalising with a one liner for effect. Hmm, maybe I could do this for a living?
As I said, I apologise - I'm just being a silly morning grumble bum.
I wont be happy until it's a regular again. :(
www.twitter.com ?
Indeed
Ahh, music, that's what I was missing.
I guess the key word here is compare. You are right, we should compare session to session but what I want is all the info in one neat package. Instead of "driver x is 3 tenths faster than last years pole time so far", I want all the times for the weekend so I know if the times being posted in FP2 are already faster than FP3 last year and if that's because the weather is better this year or similar.
last.fm?
Winamp, but the plays are being recorded at last.fm
Ah. You need Gavin.
your first poddie of the evening:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/17/f1-digest-2009-china-free-practice/
poddie 2 hopefully up before fp3.
Is that Mr. Sawards?
yup.
Poddie? I did not sanction this new word.
Good stuff, cheers Mr C :)
Good. He'll be saying all sorts of rubbish if you let this slide.
Evening everyone....
hullo pardner.
Night all. Enjoy FP3. :)
Have got a louder alarm for tonight, so hopefully I won't sleep through Qualifying...
hello to you
goodbye from me. see ya for qualifying
can't convince ya to join for fp3 dom?
no-one's a fan of fp3 then?
night you lot :)
I thinking of getting a water bucket so when the alarm goes, it tilts over and soaks, me, so i wake up
3.55am, got to be kidding me, i'll never wake up for that.
What's wrong with "Poddie"?
If it was in Spa, ok. But China, no.
I want to, but I was finding it very hard to stay awake for FP1. Need more sleep tonight. :(
understood!
It's too twee.
My best time is a 2:03.80 after 6 laps.
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4539/dsc00370tpf.jpg
I don't understand the World Record bit now. I definitely did not get the world record there. :P
I could be but I am going out dinner. I should be back for it to start. It would only be at 23:00 locally, so I am only missing the Daily News...
groovy, we'll be here.
2.05.45. :( *Readies long list of racing driver excuses*
I'll be here! Smiling :-)
I'm always paranoid of missing the alarm with these early races. So I'm gonna stay up for qualifying, and I'll watch Practice 3 too.
Alarms on iPhone set and dropio'd the other day
Night all. see you for quali :)
This race doesn't even have a title sponsor.
Official name per f1.com: "2009 FORMULA 1 CHINESE GRAND PRIX"
In Fantasy Racers:
I still can not believe that most of are below "the benchmark for a low scoring team"...Why do the standards have to be set so high? It is almost like trying to get an MBA at MIT.... It is not like we are supposed to be brain surgeons or anything like that.... :P
I'm sure it's Sinopec. It used to be anyway.
That's what I thought. Usually Sinopec is within the title on f1.com.
Maybe the companies that where in the hunt for the title spnourship could not afford the bribe money. We are in a world-wide depression you know, in the West, the employees are the first to go. In China it is the bribe money. You just have to control your biggest expense, you know...
Are most people getting up for qualifying instead of stying up?
I am.
Getting up I mean :-)
saying up.
Staying up. I will translate for you.
Agreed, can we ban this please?
Along with all talk of football ;)
Twitter is starting to confuse the hell out of me.
A group of people are in mid-afternoon in California sending tweets about IRL and ALMS. Now the F1 peeps have woken up and it's Saturday morning in China.
Who's going to translate at 3am?
The next few hours could be quiet here. Someone pick a discussion topic?:P
Franck.
Just woke up after 2 unexpected hours of sleep. Missed TWiF
Yawn....
:P
WHAT!???
Okay then. Um... if people are staying up till crazy o'clock does this affect their eating patterns as well?
Last race, we were having nachos at 7am or something crazy like that.
I jest :D
BBC have finally released the calendar files for the whole F1 season.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7998001.stm
Can have races only or all sessions and is compatible with iCal
Looks like this: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/f1-calendar-bbc-jpg
Saves me a job :)
Very cool.
It's quite good, up until now they've been doing a Mr C (it was a beta :) ) and releasing the files for one race at a time. Feedback has obviously been positive
There is no bad time for Nachos :D
Cos a work a rotating shift pattern (a week of earlies, then a week of lates) my eating and sleeping patterns are always moving. Luckily I can adapt using lengthy lie ins preceded by very late nights.
Monday on Earlies can be tough, getting to 'the office' for 6am :(
i could not do that.
Me neither. I'm not what you would call a 'morning person'.
It's taken me years to adapt and not feel like crap.
I now sleep in late on the Sunday or nap during the day and more often than not, stay up and go to work. On the Monday, I can be in bed for 7pm to get back in sync for the rest of the week.
Only works cos I'm single at the moment :)
I'm definitely a night owl but on this pattern I only have to get up early for half my working time (or 5 times in 14 days) which suits me just fine
I get the feeling that a lot of F1 fans aren't.
The parody ads have started in response the the Micro$oft "Laptop Hunt" promos.
Homeless Frank: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbJSuduTrPs :D
Years of staying up for races or middle of the night alarm calls?
Possibly... I've just always been able to stay up fairly late and I've never been able to get up on time for anything.
you could be onto something there
Message to YouTube uploaders: don't put crappy backing tracks behind an onboard lap, it ruins it.
Yeah, I was pretty much the same.
Have been working 'Earlies' at some point for pretty much 17 years now and it's only recently that I've gotten better at it :)
Right, bedtime for me I think. Night all, see you for qualifying.
G'night Chris
I'd love to find footage of the Jerez 97 podium ceremony. There was a real mess-up with the presentation, it then was put off the calender. Sounds quite major to be put off the calender.
The mayor of Jerez showed up uninvited and presented one of the trophies. Max wasn't pleased one bit.
Jerez 1997 must be one of the most bizarre races ever.
Have Renault given up on their team Podcast?
Malaysia's didn't appear and now China is here it probably won't
don't think it's race related. last one was in the factory.
It was last year and the website says 2009 Australian GP Podcast
Sounds quite race specific to me, maybe they're all in a bad mood
Will be skipping the Saturday sessions today. I'll drop in if I find wifi where I'm going, otherwise I'll just be updating myself via mobile. ;)
there wasn't much about the race in it? talking about factory stuff.
no worries. enjoy ;)
I guess they don't have much to shout about so far
"Good news, Piquet didn't crash..." :D
:)
Reading about the '97 finale at Jerez (notably, Schey's colision with Villeneuve which Michael later lost his 2nd place in the championship
This is mentioned, and I wondered if it was still a valid (ie, current) rule
Article 123 of the FIA International Sporting Code stating: "The entrant shall be responsible for all acts or omissions on the part of the driver."
Entrant meaning team. Would this be relevant to the McLaren hearing and put ALL of the blame on them and not Lewis?
Hehehe.
"In other good news, door still attached in motorhome."
"and Ma Alonso has given her son some lovely Chorizo for our lunch"
Absolutely. I don't think this has changed, but Alia can confirm that for us. ;)
Mmmm, chorizo... :D
Could really do with some Tapas right now, that'd be sweeeet!
MMMM! Tapas, perfect for breakfast. Oh, Bassano, now you've done it! I'm craving for Tapas right now. Maybe I should go out and buy some later... :)
There's a Tapas restaurant about 2 miles away from my place too. Sadly, I don't think they are open at 1:30am
But surely they open early? Over here, tapas is most popular at breakfast. Not sure about there, though. ;)
I was wondering why I was getting hungry, then changed tabs and found you guys talking about food :-)
Has this been posted?
Castroneves acquitted, en route to Indy
In spain too but I think this one is more of a Spanish restaurant that does great Tapas too.
In the city there may be something but Londoners are usually only looking for coffee or a fried breakfast on a Saturday morning
Very good Spanish food, at that. We haven't even mentioned paella yet!
A few times, yes. :)
I miss Barcelona now, Taps and an ice cold beer on the Ramblas, watching the world go by
Ahhhh yes. Just read up on Wikipedia. Apparently, our tapa is different from their tapa. We got it as a Spanish colony, yet the tapa seems to have changed on the boat going here. ;)
I wonder what Flibster will choose for his Spanish Breakfast when F1 reaches Barcelona. ;)
Is he having race specific food?
What a great idea
Yup. I guess you didn't see him talk about him eating vegemite when we were in Australia?
Very much so! It's a bit tricky to find the food, but it's a great way to learn about their culture. It's like F1 meets The Food Channel. ;)
Sounds interesting though
"Filipino tapa (mostly made with beef, occasionally with venison or wild boar) is fried and eaten as a full meal, usually for breakfast with garlic-fried rice and fried eggs, along with a chili-vinegar dip."
Vegemite is not good but the Aussies swear by it
Very similar to English Marmite which is known for it's "love it or hate it nature"
I wonder what he's going to eat for Bahrain?
Kinda like durian, then... ;)
VERY delicious. I swear by it. :D
No idea, to be honest. China is eeeeasy. ;)
Worthy of a wikipedia page, apparently: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisine_of_Bahrain
Very much so :D
I guess he could have Felafels, they're quite delish
Shawarma FTW! :D That became a fad here a few years ago - every street corner had them back then. ;)
Sounds like a kebab
But that'd be for the British Grand Prix, surely?
The entrant is responsible for the driver's behaviour. That has always been the case.
a podcast with joe:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/18/an-aside-with-joe-nobody-comes-here-unless-they-have-to/
