Ah, the meetup yesterday was brilliant and expect to hear more on it soon. Meanwhile, plenty has been happening in the F1 world, and although I haven't had a chance to catch up with the comments yet, I imagine these are the things under discussion:
- The diffusers have been declared legal, which is a weight off the minds of Brawn, Toyota and Williams. The others, though, are consigned to either redesign their cars or try and catch up in another way. Ferrari are already suggesting they are "forced" to rethink the F2009, whilst Newey is hard at work trying to incorporate the diffuser into the Red Bull. Expect to see results very soon!
- BMW have obviously managed to make some weight-savings on their car, as Kubica is planning to testout KERS on Friday in Shanghai. Particularly because the circuit has plenty of long straights, KERS could be a significant advantage, but they'll evaluate and make their decision during Free Practice.
- Finally, AUTOSPORT reports that Ron Dennis is due to make a decision about his future soon, which could see him step back from the team. Firstly, I thought he'd already done that, and secondly, would he really leave them in such a time of crisis?
That'll do for now. It's serious catchup time at Sidepodcast Towers as we fly headlong into the race weekend. Before you know it, Free Practice will be upon us. Until then, I'll see you in the comments.
For those that suggested Mr C needed waking up with some loud and obnoxious noises, I did my best with the hairdryer. I think he went back to sleep though.
He can't complain about that. Diffusers are legal now!
Badum-tish!
Ah, the hairdryer. Too noisy for us men. That's why we use a quieter and much more efficient tool. It's called a towel. :D
It would take at least three hours for a towel to dry my hair!!
The BAT podium for Bahrain
1st - Al (BMW)
2nd - Flibster (Williams)
3rd - R.G (Toyota)
Whereas it only takes me but a minute :D
What's this - no Brawn on the podium? Surely not!
But other than that, this podium is relatively accurate, I think.
15th...
Lou leads the championship with 25 points though ;)
Oh yes - I got a text this morning saying my laptop is coming back from repairs today! I can live comment this weekend! :D
Despite crashing in qualifying I my Torro Rosso still managed to come 7th, my best finish yet! I even kept a far faster McLaren behind me for the last 10 laps!
OH YEAH!
Two wins and a 4th?
Sean!! You beat me!! Well done :)
I think that makes it 2 all.
Morning everyone
Morning.
Comedy Gold award to you good sir!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG10GmYV888&feature=related :D
I am getting worse and worse at BATracer, I have gone from getting a few spot on values to getting none because I keep being over enthusiastic and using more laps than I have spare in practice. Boooo.
I have only had one spot on value in each of my races. Still, I'm pretty happy with my last practice times.
You're a lot more on the pace than I am!
What I want to know is when is a session going to be something other than bone dry. I want to test my adjusting-for-the-wet skills!
I had mostly spot on or ones with a gap of 4, e.g 59-62 and i still only qualified 14th, i just think the Renault is rubbish
From James Allen:
Really, now? Hmmm...
Initial speculation was that it would be ready by Monaco - maybe they're delaying it until Silverstone? That rear suspension arrangement is costing them a lot of development time right now.
And they will say "Um... none."
It's quite predictable eh?
Damn, I said I would win. Congrats to Al though. And Renault boys, are you still fooling us yet?
As promised Mr C, Photo's of the 30th tribute to Williams on my car last year are now on drop io.
Yep, still sandbagging, we've got a new diffuser coming soon :P
Some incoming news stories from China on Autosport. Alonso says he thinks the "diffuser gang" cars will stay ahead and that he's very worried about the ridiculous tyre compound choices for the race weekend. Meanwhile Ferrari have decided not to run KERS this weekend. Bet you anything that has something to do with Kimi's FP1 failure at Sepang.
What are your thoughts on Alonso's comments? Personally I think these new tyre compound combos make the racing more exciting.
I wonder if the new diffuser will happen in the game.
Ok....wordpress help please.....
I'm starting a new blog on wordpress because my blogspot one just looks horid, anywho, is there a way to move all the posts from the blogspot one to the wordpress one??
Any help is appreciated :D
So KERS gains Kubica and loses Raikkonen and Massa - only 3 teams using KERS this weekend then, 6 cars in all.
To add to my comment a few posts up: Personally I think these new tyre compound combos make the racing more exciting. That and he's just becoming a crybaby with all this whinging and complaining. Grow up, Fernando. You're a double world champion for peat's sake.
Just ignore that, figured it out all by myself....and the help section :D
The devs do update the cars relative to real-life performances. So if there are any performance gains from some of the teams in the next few races, I'm pretty sure we'll see exactly the same implemented in the BAT carset.
Unless he's concerned that the super-softs cause blowouts. Will we see the idea floated post-Melbourne of cars waiting for a Safety Car, then doing pitstops on 2 consecutive laps, just to get the super-softs out of the way?
Blowouts, of course, being inherently unsafe.
Oh of course, I see your point. It's just that whenever there's been an issue, Fernando's always been the first to complain about it. Quite frankly, it's getting a bit annoying.
Well, he's an outspoken guy. I'd rather see that than someone who just spouts PR statements. He speaks his mind and I respect him for it, regardless of whether I agree with him or not.
This is why it makes sense to me that he is a GPDA director
3rd fastest in Barcelona practice on hard tyres. Man, this RB5's got pace! :D
Not wanting to ruin your moment in the sun, but I set the fastest on hards as well
Who's the overall leader now, is it still Pedro? Looks like Mark Webber is their main leader nowadays, in partnership with Alonso.
Yeah Pedalo is still the chairman as far as I know
I'd guess so. Pedro is the chairman, Mark and Fernando directors.
LAPTOP IS BACK! :D
Lukeh - You might want to watch out for that fifth place in the Most Talkative list.
From AUTOSPORT? :-)
:D Haha
Only because you've got a triple diffuser ;)
I'll be working more soon probably and back to uni so I'm expecting the drop ;)
I need to get me back on there. I was top once, and now I can Live Comment once again I will be there once again! :D
You could have picked the best team on the grid with the exception of Brawn, but noooo, and look who is ahead of you in the construcors
The league below can be like a mad house at times
Well I'm now the fastest in practice, by half a second. On the hard slicks I might add :D
I'm comfortable with who I picked ;)
Yeah but your in a BMW and we know how much BMW rocks
One question - toxicfusion, are you really Spanish? Sorry to ask but your real name doesn't sound like a very Spanish name to me, for obvious reasons. :P
Oh yes - I got a text this morning saying my laptop is coming back from repairs today! I can live comment this weekend! {Comment #10}
That's brilliant!
The car comparison for the 2009 season would beg to differ :P
No I'm not really spanish, and on BatRacer only my first name is the real thing. I can be found however, I joined the sidepodcast facebook group, lol.
Now commenting from my laptop :D
Can't get the comments to show up on the LCLT. Do I need FF3 or IE8 for that now?
That might happen cos of a dodgy character in the comments somewhere, can you get any other comments from other threads?
McLaren Automotive no longer to be part of McLaren Group:
http://www.mclaren.com/latestnews/press-releases.php?article=275
sometime it helps if you post a comment yourself
Nope, all there was was a blank LCLT. No posts or comments, nothing.
What are you using at the moment?
I like this bit:
As of today, Ron Dennis has handed his responsibility as Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Racing to Martin Whitmarsh, who will be responsible to the board for the activities of McLaren Racing in addition to his role of Team Principal of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.
Subtle. Or not.
Wow, didn't expect that.
That seems to imply that their cars will be entirely McLaren i.e. nothing to do with Mercades. A wise move given the current situation with the F1 team?
And they will say “Um… none.” {Comment #24}
Or maybe "We very much support and encourage all efforts to make the British Grand Prix thrive and shine, especially in the gloom of the global economy to give an example of real leadership to other countries. Of course, this will also give a vital boost to the British car industry* and help to safeguard thousands of jobs." If the government scriptwriters/PR people are feeling particularly imaginative, they might even say, "This will cut down on climate change as British people will travel less distance to get to a race than they would otherwise".
Then perhaps £10,000 will be given to improve the access road or something (you know, about enough to put a new layer of asphalt on the road to give the people in traffic jams something slightly less ugly to see). Quietly, so as not to upset the environmentalists, anti-car lobby or the people who think all money should be thrown at failing businesses or to free up the loans market.
* - This could be used as an excuse to justify whatever distribution method the government likes - it could do it any way it wants as long as it honeys the distribution method with sufficiently sugary words.
McLaren Automotive no longer to be part of McLaren Group: {Comment #62}
That looks like a finance thing. It's a bit tricky raising equity if you've got a loss-making (or likely-to-be-loss-making) racing team in the company. However, the racing team is the core of the business, so if a split was considered necessary, it had to be the sports car company that moved.
Of course, it does have the latitude to pick engine suppliers other than Mercedes. We'll just have to wait until closer to the time to see what happens.
It's interesting that Ron mentioned that Max and Bernie would not be displeased with him switching to the road car side in his statement.
To me the whole thing feels more like "LOOK AT ME I'M NOT IN THE F1 BUSINESS ANYMORE" rather than any major actual structure change. He's still a major shareholder in the McLaren group, and the majority of people will have a finger in both pies.
I was just about to say that, great quote:
"I admit I'm not always easy to get on with. I admit I've always fought hard for McLaren in Formula 1. I doubt if Max Mosley or Bernie Ecclestone will be displeased by my decision. But no-one asked me to do it. It was my decision."
YAY! I've installed FF3 and the LCLT works properly :D
Hey, where'd everyone go? :P
to install FF3? ;)
I think they're off to the museum again. As for me, people keep giving me work to do, and it despite the fact I am at work, who says that's what I should be doing...
FF3's been out for a while, don't they know that?! ;)
My morning has been pretty bad which has kept me busy...
After getting home at 12:30 I was up at 5 to come to work this morning... I missed my train. Got a cab. Got stuck in traffic. Arrived at office. Skype didn't work - which we use for an important conference call. Then an hour later the building I work in had total electrical failure. I had to go out onto the street and kindly ask the gentlemen who were drilling into our power cables to stop. And then we rebooted - everything.
As we have a live stockmarket trading environment in the building this was not something I appreciated very much :(
I think I might try and sleep under my desk for bit now and hope nobody finds me ;)
Awww.
Just think of it this way, at least you haven't thrown fish and chips in your lap today.
(Yet.)
Good luck. Are you a fan of Seinfeld? George was practically living under his work desk. Just leave the jacket over the chair, so it likes like you're around work somewhere and no gone home...
something from yesterday?

:)
hahahaha! But as you say... the night is Youngs!
ithangyou! I'm hear all week!
Oh dear.
Skype on iPhone over wifi only!
I think I'm cracking up.
It was once I got to the office I had that problem :(
new Apple product?
:)
I should so make that app for the iPhone!
what would it do?
Just give you a random joke?
Sorry, meant to have brackets around the wifi only bit. I was just making sure you knew about Skype on iPhone (as if for some reason you wouldn't have)
Tell corny jokes.
Ah yes. Sorry I follow now!
In a southern drawl?
In BB King's voice? (Every thang... every thang... every thang gunna be allright this morning)
Good good. ;)
w00t! Finally on the podium!
It's raining in Monaco. Why does this keep happening when sporting events I want to watch are being held there?
Don't forget, for anyone who wants to hear their name read out in the bright lights of F1 Digest (that doesn't quite work) then please post your short summaries of how you're feeling about F1 going into the Chinese race weekend. Now the diffusers are sorted... any predictions you might have.... what the weather will be like... anything on your mind.
Thanks :)
*peeks into his mind*
Ewwww...better not.
...about F1 and China. :)
Mine:
Thank goodness this diffuser malarky seems to be over! At least we can now get back to the racing. China looks like it's going to be a dry weekend all round which means that unlike Malaysia we get to see who is quickest on a dry track without the threat of wet conditions (if you know what I mean. I dunno, I think it was something Mr C mentioned before in a daily post). Brawn and Toyota will still be on a high after their super starts, while BMW looks like they've woken up at last and are taking the fight to the diffuser gang. Red Bull look to have dropped off in pace just a bit, but here's hoping they can bring themselves to the front once again. Ferrari and McLaren will once again be running lower down than they would have liked and probably dreaming of their fortunes from 2008. But red is lucky in China, so maybe this could be the race we see Maranello really begin the resurgance...or perhaps not. On a personal note, I have my laptop back which means for the first time in the 2009 season, I can live comment! Plus with a new headset mic, I can join in the post-race festivities which I am greatly looking forward to. All that's left for me to say is - GO JENSON! :D
Thank you!
Always a pleasure, never a chore :)
BBC sports news correspondent Andy Swiss:
It's not like he'd say yes
Are you saying that a McLaren employee is lying? It's a conspiracy. Lie-Gate II
"I'm leaving so the FIA don't screw us completely over.....oh wait, i didnt mean to say that!"
Even CNN is reporting that Ron Dennis is leaving. And this is a country/continent that doesn't seem to care about F1. wow.
Something non McLaren related: Which circuits would you like to see make a return?
Personally I want to see Imola and Montreal come back.
Montreal - certainly, but I think I'm forgetting Imola...oh dear....
Montreal without a shadow of a doubt, and maybe a good US track like Watkins Glen or Indy
re: Indy - with or without the first corner chicane? aah 2005...so many memories, for so few drivers...
how else would you do the circuit?
Montreal, Watkins Glen, Zandvoort
Remember that Quik Maps...
Just a pity Zandvoort can't do it anymore cos of the noise restrictions.
you are all evil!
morning all.
speaking of circuits of the past, has anyone got the book Autodrome? I'm so tempted to get it, even the cover is beautiful.
mmm, my lunch is nice, how goes it?
I would like Silverstone not to go, if that counts.
have lost my voice.
ahh, so how many did you drink last night?
You should have listened to LPG and Andy's children.... Too much singing will make you lose your voice ;)
Here here, classic circuit. Whenever I
hahaa, that was funny :)
hows your head today? ;)
hey everyone :)
every drink that was presented to me bar the last one.
good advice.
Hey lou, hey me!
I'm scared to ask how many that was.
Heya Lou!
Whenever I virtually drive around it, I love taking Maggots, Becketts and Chapel as quick as I can. Such a great sequence of corners.
which in normal language means "i honestly can't remember....it must have been alot" :D
When Codemasters do F12010, they better have some unlockable classic tracks like silverstone and such
Otherwise quantifiable as: Enough to get you into trouble.
Lots of trouble!
Tut tut, Mr C
And on your anniversary too!
Sure.
Malaysia Preview
Ah, the diffuser day in the past, the teams skipping along now like nothing had happend. As usual, it will be the 'Diffuser Boys' who will probably get the best results along with Red Bull and if they are lucky, BMW. However, I can't see Brawn winning, with more teams likely to get that diffuser on board there cars very soon, they could be caught up to very quickly by Red Bull, and I wouldn't be surprised if we dont see a championship fight between Brawn and Red Bull very soon. As for the race, I'm going Vettel, Barrichello and Kubica.
Spot the rookie mistake
:)
Thank you.
:D
BTW, has anyone read Joe Saward's tribute to Ron? Quite brilliant post.
Oh, and one more thing:
Page 22 has made it to Asia. :D Picture to follow soon. ;)
Not suprising it has been a few years since it saw a F1 race. I only remember thanks to F1 Championship Edition :D
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7985975.stm
That is quite spectacular.
Why thank you. :D
Just for you - I've found a copy of the short film c'etait un rendez-vous online.
Linky
I would say turn the volume up and enjoy - but it may not be the best idea. ;)
Jaw-dropping. All it needed was an F1 car running down the straight and it would've been perfect.
Yay!
To those intrested, turn to page 22 in April 09 edition of F1 Racing, take a pic of yourself with it and upload it to
http://drop.io/meandpage22
Did we discuss this already?
RoC to be in Beijing, and much earlier, in November. Also appears to be two random days, Tuesday and then Wednesday.
Organisers say: "I would like to say thank you to Wembley for the past two years. The people there were great to work with and helped us put on two fantastic events."
What they don't say is the last line which is: "...but it was too freaking cold."
BOO!
Probably won't be shown on TV now. :(
I hope they enjoy racing in front of no one.
:( i'm really pleased i went last year. Such a shame they haven't decided to keep it in Europe, i swear they could have got a bigger audience somewhere else in England.
it was cold, but well worth it. i'd do it all again if the tickets weren't as expensive.
Why not? Didn't Sky Sports still have the rights when it was in Paris
Good point - they'll probably end up forcing people to go. ;)
Will the drivers want to fly out to China for 2 days - completely throwing out their body clocks when they should be preparing for the 2010 season?
Also: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74501
Whitmarsh said on Thursday he had offered McLaren's shareholders his resignation, but it was turned down.
That answers a lot of our questions then.
Can I also say how bad an idea to have it on two seperate days, in the middle of the week. How stupid is that.
They will be in Abu Dhabi apparantly, its straight after
It's only 2 days after Abu Dhabi so it won't be that bad.
For the F1 drivers - what about all the other guys who get involved?
oooh James Allen on the radio.
his voice, it brings with it horrid flashbacks.
James has been saying that Ferrari won't use KERS in China because of the reliability.
*pulls plug out of wall to prevent accidentally turning the radio on*
Of that slideshow!
It's been on Autosport earlier too
AUTOSPORT you mean?
Possibilities
Old Trafford - Manchester - 75,000
Stade de Francais - Paris - 79,000
Olympiastadion - Berlin - 76,000
Luzhniki Stadium - Moscow - 86,000 (Has got athletics track so track can be bigger)
Athens Olympic Stadium - Athens - 71,000 (Has got athletics track)
Millenium Stadium - Cardiff - 75,000
I'd put it two weeks after the end of formula 1 season, so November 15th, kept on one day. The nations cup must have only one nation each, and both drivers from that nation to make it more patriotic.
That, and the end of the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. I still have nightmares.
Afternoon. :)
AUTOWHAT? OH YEAH, AUTOSPORT, THE ONES WHO KEEP SHOUTING
Hi Dom.
:)
Whitmarsh probably felt that this was all his fault for letting it happen, so it shows he's a real man in offering up his own head for the chopping block. That all the more makes me come to the conclusion that he deserves a second chance to prove his worth as team principal.
So if the ROC organisers are listening, if you want to drop me a line, I'm pretty sure we could sort something good out.
Can I not have the race of champions in my back garden?
Clement Freud died...
:(
*stick on some Just a Minute shows*
as long as you dont mind it being tarmacked over
It was turned down because there is nobody else ready to take his job...
Really sad isnt it, after Humph aswell :(
Yup. :(
At least that maybe means that they won't force a long return of just a minute now and it too will get to RIP?
(I just can't listen without Humph :-( it will always be missing something....)
But woot! for diffusers... I still don't think that that is actually what is 'making the difference' though (bigevilgrin).....
Forwards to victory...
Am going to be on Radio Wales at 5.45.
Radio 4 just isn't going to be the same.
My favourite Clement-ism is "Friar Tuck – which isn't a Spoonerism, by the way..."
Button getting used to winning already :D
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74497
Well, you would, wouldn't you?
As it will also be in Beijing by that time of the year, according to Wolf - the Chinese winter can be quite biting. ;)
As long as he can used to not winning again next year...
Well, hopefully... ;)
:D :D
5 hours late but the tennis has started! Do I need sleep tonight? Nahhhh
:)
There is a fantastic anecdote of his that was told by Stephen Fry on the Today program this morning.
Clement Freud was on a junket to China when he was an MP. His opposite number was Winston Churchill (the recent one). One night he went to Winston's room for a nightcap and was surprised to discover that Winston's room was much larger than his. In China, he knew, everything happens for a reason.
So the next morning he asked "I notice that Winston has a larger room than I... Is this because he's part of the government whereas I am part of the opposition".
"No," came the reply, "it is because he has a famous grandfather".
"I had always," Celment said, "believe that I had a famous grandfather. This was the only time in my life I was out-grandfathered".
How long til we get Fernando's comments on Ron stepping down? My guess is as soon as China awakes in the morning.
Night chaps, I'm off to watch a DVD then go to bed. I'll see you all at FP1.
See ya Sean
Night Sean
"Mark Webber: I agree with that. We had a pretty good run in Melbourne until the first corner. I think Heikki hit Rubens. I haven’t spoken to Heikki about that yet but Rubens and I said we are going to bash him up later on. Yeah, that happens."
F1 would be so much more interesting if he wasn't kidding.
Purchase a Trumpet or Bugle, then try the opening bars to the "William Tell Overture"....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8001425.stm
bbc reporting that Ron has 'gone'....
reads rather like someone has pulled his obit to prep that article though (erk)
Wow at CNN mentioning Ron Dennis. That's pretty big.
Whitmarsh offered to step down, jesus. If he had gone too then the team would be in huge trouble.
If he had, would Ron have had to step in once again until someone else could take over? Or would he just promote the next person in line?
Well i still say kers is a white elephant and kolvalinen is not a F1 driver
Erm, excuse me?
you don't say ;)
Hehehe.
I can't help but feel that Whitmarsh tries his best to imitate Ronspeak through the whole of this press conference :D
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74505
But who is next in line?
That's the thing - we don't know, do we?
I'm putting money on it being the guy who puts on the left rear tyre.
I don't think there is anyone. Ron's been preparing Martin for this role for years, so if he resigns after a couple of months it would have all been pointless.
<blockquote>I’m putting money on it being the guy who puts on the left rear tyre.</blockquote> Chicken man?

these guys are missing a brawnmower:
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/126052
haha.
Btw Scott, you been listening/catching up with the past panels this series? Cos episode 2 is simply brilliant
I am going to stop supporting anyone in sports because it seems to make them rubbish. I'm looking at you Kovalainen and Federer.
Is Federer no good at the mo?
I think I listened to a bit of episode 2. Not sure :P
It was the one with Brawnmowers in it
Well well well, was it only a matter of when rather than if?
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/126051
he is one set away from losing in the 3rd round to the Swiss #2 who has never beaten him before.
For those who missed the link a few days ago, everyone's favourite new F1 team has a YouTube page :D
http://www.youtube.com/user/OfficialBrawnGP
match point, I can't take this sort of stress at 2 in the morning
noooooo roger nooooooo
Don't worry, we know. :)
Just looking on the Brawn GP site's team info, I didn't know Loic Bigois was still going. Last time I heard of him, he was at Prost all those years ago.
it's been up for a while, they have a link on their website. tis awesome though :D i feel they need a video or two with Rubens in though.
I hear that! :D
I couldn't agree more.
Of course, it aint as good as the BMW one
*whistles away
Some things I didn't know about Ross Brawn are on his "CV" in the team info:
1971 - Trainee Engineer, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority
1976 - Machinist, Williams F1
1977 - Mechanic, March Engineering
1978 - Mechanic, Williams F1
1979 - R&D Manager and Senior Aerodynamicist, Williams F1
Had no idea he worked for Williams in the past. Earliest I'd heard about him was when he worked at Jaguar on their Le Mans sportscars.
Rubens should do a race diary too!
I'd rather hear from him any day.
yeah he should. but he doesn't do anything like that for his website. Although i think Jenson's audio diaries are for five live or something?
its raining again in Monaco, I'm never going to get to bed
I don't see them on the most subscribed list...
Just sayin' ;)
Ah, I thought they were just for his site.
Thats because clearly every Brawn fan has 100 accounts and is subscribing to that
i think i've heard one on five live once last year, could be they just used it from his site though. either that or just used one from his site. either way, they are great.
you'll never prove it :P
That thud and groan you might of heard 6,500 miles away was my reaction to that statement.
Really, we need to get Long Beach back on the calander. This weekend, "the soon to be bankrupt' IRL will be racing there. For me, the IRL racing at Long Beach is like a rotten salad on a silver platter. Come on Bernie... throw us a bone.
Sounds like Mr. C needs some hangover cure. Christine, got any bloody mary mix?
It would explain why he says "please visit jensonbutton.com" at the end of most of them, even though I'm already there.
:D
teehee....
Although I suspect a reliance on unnamed energy drink is more likely?
(is this the time to gloat and mention that I've never, ever, had a hangover in my life... and yes I have got stupidly drunk on several occasions - whit DPs boss once who got me almost legless at a company dinner and was most put out when I was bright and happy the next morning hah!)
I'm not gloating, honest.... I'm having a duvet day anyway...
That's a possibility. The current economic crisis may give the Hulman George family an opportunity to stop the idiot grandson frittering away any more of the family fortune. They could use the public line that like thousands of other companies, the IRL was simply a victim of the worldwide recession. This would allow them to at least save face, to a degree.
From the people I've talked to... everyone involved is losing A LOT of money. The virtually had to give away the TV rights (execpt for Indy of course.) Ticket sales are down from last years' miniscule amount. Advertising is no where near what they expected. There are only two things making money in the series and that is Danica and the Indy 500.
They may of won the war with CART, but they destroyed everything that was built in the last five decades in open wheel racing in the states in the process.
it's a rolling monthly figure. when bmw released their youtube channel last year, they made that list no problem.
i didn't really have a huge hangover. bassano wouldn't let me mix drinks. i have been mute for most of the day though.
Ross did a lot of stuff at Williams - even shared that he was their truckie for a while - such were the days of multitasking back then. Frank also mentioned Ross' time with Williams in an interview this year.

Personally I want to see Imola and Montreal come back.
Hmmm, Perhaps the walking Sage of F1, Steven Roy would know, but how was Mount Tremblant as a Race Track?
I will agree to Montreal but perhaps we need Mosport to come back as well, as a North American Grand Prix. A U.S. Grand Pric would be nice too if the proper location was found, but knowing Bernie he will settle for the parking lot of some casino in Los Vegas....
I will agree to Iola only if major chances are made to teh circuit. Namely they need to get rid of the Villeneuve Chicance, and make Tamburello the only turn/chance in direction from 2nd Rivazza to Tosa.
Before people freak out. I want the people at Imola to put the new track behind the current pits, and the new Tamburello, 90 dergree left, would be furthur up the track so that it lines up with the exit of Villeneuve.
Parish the thought. An actual Top Gear flat-out corner....By definitiion unsafe for F1.
I don't think this is possible, because of the river behind the track.
The joke is that they're treating the fact they've essentially given away the TV rights as a triumph, as previously they were having to pay Disney to show the series. But they're now left with - Indy aside - only 300,000 viewers watching their races. And unsurprisingly no big-money sponsors want anything to do with them.
Agree completely. Sure, CART had its faults, but before the IRL came to town, not only was open wheel racing financially healthy, it was growing in terms of both spectators and TV viewers.
But Tony George felt he wasn't getting a fair share of the pie. He felt that as the owner of the Indianapolis circuit, he had to get more - hence the creation of the IRL.
10% of something is better than 100% of nothing, which is what George will soon be left with.
Of course he'll never admit that, will he? What matters to him is he won, and his ego was fed. IRL wasn't about the money - Tony George will still be rich even if it collapses. It was about his pride, to prove a point - which he did.
I'm sure that he'll be left very happy on a personal level, and it could even be argued that one man gained something - if only for a short while. It's the millions of fans who used to enjoy US open wheel racing who've lost out.
Build a Bridge. All you really need is some steel beams and inflatable rafts.... Talk to the Italian Army, Surely their Engineering Branch could use the practice...
Now if you really want to get fancy about then by all means build a real bridge... God, can these can be the same people who descended from the Romans and whose 2 000+ year viaducts can still be used today? Maybe a couple of foremen need to be thrown to lions or something to encourage the others?
Now you cant have enough bridges in a race circuit
seconded ;)
Imola = Acque Minerale. If you have to ask, it is a shame.
But then they'd have to adjust the pit complex and raise it as well. Given the layout of the pit area and the safety concerns, I don't think it's feasible.
A simpler solution would simply be to move Tamburello 50 metres back so that you get yourself the needed runoff area to make it flat again.
Technically, Siliverstone left many times to strange places like Brands hatch or Aintree.... :P
damn, we missed sir jackie by a day.
He's on the One Show on BBC1 tonight, I believe.
It was last night
Ah crap.
Its on iPlayer i think
Good one.
Evening all. Back from work and bloody nackered. Didn't get home until 1 this morning. Worth it though, yesterday was awesome, loved every minute.
My overwhelming feelings post meet are:
- Other than the F1 exhibit, The Science Museum is awesome.
- Mr.C looks surprisingly like the mental image I already had of him.
- Mrs.C is taller than I expected.
- It really doesn't seem like 10 years since I watched Hakkinen crash the McLaren that was in the Museum.
- All of you sidepodfolk are bloody nice people :D
Bring on the next meetup!
Those who missed Jackie Stewart on The One Show
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jvmdp/The_One_Show_15_04_2009/
Wow! There WAS a limit to the man's pateince, after all..... :P
Mr C always makes out I'm short, but that's only because he's comparing me to his own freakishly tall self ;)
He's even taller than me, and I'm the tallest person I know!
Can anyone give me a comparison?
Like a giraffe?
Unless he's that tall, I meant realistically
Oh, dunno. Um, taller than Chris Evans?
haha :D
:D :D
I'm shorter than almost everyone, it makes life easy because if I expect someone to be taller than me, they normally are :D
Great, now I have an image of a normally propportioned man with a ten foot neck....
Hehehe.
So he is the Jeremy Clarkson to Amy's Richard Hammond?
Bingo.
Your not the only one.
Perfect.
I like it.
Game wise, there is already 1 or 2 2009 F1 mods out for rFactor/GTR2 if anyone's interested. ;)
But don't ask me if they're any good. My laptop couldn't run them smooth enough for me to tell you. They do look good though.
Amy is Massa, I'm Webber and Mr.C is Justin Wilson (if anyone remembers him).
Now he was tall
The F1RL 2009 mod was great until the recent patch which made the cars 10 times harder to drive.
I think Massa or Heidfeld should pay me to stand next to them to make them look tall.
If Mr. C can not fit into a 1992 Williams, can we compare him to Nigel Mansell?
I've seen some videos of the FSONE 2008 mod with the moving arms. They do look quite good. Although it doesn't look like they've figured out how to programme the arms to cross each other when you turn the wheel round a lot. Good though. Better than those I've seen before.
Don't you mean a 1995 McLaren? ;)
Yeah, I had that mod and on some cars the arms went upside down and through the sides of the car if you turned too far. I have to have the graphics turned way down on my laptop anyway.
If you search the mod on Youtube and look at some recently uploaded videos, you'll see the arms are much much better.
The best video I've seen is rFactor vs Michael Schumacher at Monza. It can be hard to tell the two appart.

Update to McLaren's front wing.
FOUR planes? Interesting.
Looks like the front part of the wing now has 2 planes.
If you at more of those guy's videos, you get to have a look at Brawn's diffuser and some aero of the F60 and MP4-24.
Found it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr5zu4bE3jw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ79Fe09zWg&feature=channel
Toyota also have an update to their front wing, with a small element extending across it a la Ferrari.
Just like to plug my blog
http://thef1waffler.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-make-race-of-champions-better.html
Heya everyone, hope all are alright. I think I just walked through Malaysia on the way home from work... huge huge rainstorm, and im just dripping from head to toe. Example..
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00590-jpg
And myself with water just falling off me in front of my gcse art thingy... which at the moment may be a self protrait of how i look
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00589-jpg
Oh snap.
Usually I *like* being my height. Except that I'm too short these days for any interesting driving days (once upon a time there were no height limits and I didn't get around to going anywhere... when I did have the cash I discovered that everywhere I look at set a 5'2" minimum :-( except on 'childrens day' and I'm too old apparently..... )
Nope Christine = tall in my book... :-)
Loving the Muse poster :D
Did you get on the wrong train? :)
it may be possible. :(
Some say his day job is being a spokesperson for a certain veggie company.
wow. that is wet.
Woh! somewhere had more rain than here (LPG is very glad that she lives at the top of the hill...)
Makes me wonder though - what would/could be done to rain proof F1? Or is that something that shouldn't even be attempted, ever?
Local paper arrived... according to it Red Bull has a diffuser 'ready to go by Europe'. Impressive reporting considering that they went to press before yesterday afternoon. Or was the decision actually made 24 hours earlier and simply embargoed? (which suggests that the team actually talk to the local paper - they may be the only ones who do....)
That is what I call rain. Though I do like to walk in it cos I'm a bit mad
Me or me?
I like the rain! I really do. But that was no rain. That was the downpour mother of all downpours, yeesh
Your is younger brother
My head hurts......
Was watching on JTV when I saw this stream along:
"the jury has reached a decision on 2 of the 7 charges against Helio. The judge won't release the verdict or jury as he wants them to decide on the other 5"
Hélio Castroneves.. (head shake.) See, F1 isn't the only racing series that gets the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
No point in rain-proofing F1. it's what separates the men from the boys, to be honest.
the thursday presscon was done in the afternoon in china, meaning it would've been morning in the UK. that should explain it.
Actually, we were discussing earlier how much of a wreck IndyCar is now. Do read the earlier comments. ;)
which local paper was it? because one of them carried the "webber caught in kers factory fire", exclusive too.
Come to think of it, is there any sport that doesn't hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons? The fact of the matter is, the media won't put sports news on the front page unless it was shocking, and 9 times out of 10, shocking news is negative news.
It's sad, but it's how the media work.
Maybe, lol... this is a local paper for local people though (the citizen for anyone who 'knows' round here)... goes to press on a tuesday/wednesday :-)
LPG - who has just heard a nasty crack of thunder and there is now a lot of rain falling again (and I've got to go and get Andy in a bit...erk)
Bowls?
Unless its massive, case, Alan Shearer taking over manager duties at Newcastle, front, back and middle pages
But what about "Felipe Baby"?....
Bless....
That's your 1 out of 10 shocking non-negative news. It's the exception, not the rule.
:D
Anyhoo, off to bed. See you at FP1! ;)
Goodness knows how I'll fit F1F, SPC, LT, and JTV on one screen. :D
See ya later Mr. Journeyer
Lol...
Later Journeyer
night good sir
Just spotted from the Press Conference that Heikki lost his balls...
Poor guy....
There goes his chances of a mini Heikki...
nothing to do with F1 (it's a daily so I'm getting in today before China)...I'll be moving so Scott In Italy will be Scott in somewhere else in a few months. If someone wants to find me a job, that'd be nice :) Possibly Scott In Boston, but we'll see how the interview goes next week... bring on China!
Oooooh, exciting stuff!
Hmm, thing he's gotta improve his swing, needs to be more striaght, down the line, hit the light green stuff.
Go you! Scott in China?
I cannot chose a job just for an F1 race although I did come to europe to see F1 at a good time zone! I'm just hoping for a good race where I don't have to think too much about work ;)
nice to see you parenthesis (sort of) thing making a comeback :)
I think I've pretty much rejected China - I think I need to live in an english language world. It's been fun, but hard, when you see a headline, and have 5% understanding and then have to wait to your near the internet to get the whole story. mind you, if i move to the US, i'll get really bad F1 coverage...decisions...
Lol
Come to the UK instead?? In spite of everything our economy has more jobs going atm than the USA, and you'd be in the 'right' timezone :-)
Or Iceland might work for you - similar time zone, mainly English speaking, and friends there say that the worst is over economically.
I supose it depends on what you do/want to do really?
we do science trips too...
yeah good question that, one i need to figure out!
i'm considering Ireland. would i get the red dot on the bbc up there? iceland is really expensive to live apparently, but I think I'll go where the job is - nice to explore the world...
What kind of job would that be of you don't mind me asking?
I was pretty jealous yesterday. I hope you learned a lot. will there be a podcast on the excursion?
I'm a geneticist/statistical geneticist/genetic epidemiologist. i look at the link between DNA and disease. interesting line of work, just like many careers - based on 12 month contracts..
I am currently 'cooking' dinner for my girlfriend, to mark our one year anniversary (which is on sunday....)....so far....no fire. Although the resoto just stuck to the pan
More literally than you would think.
i like the way, you'Re leaving the kitchen to write messages on here for your anniversary! is she there yet? dangerous to leave the kitchen alone, but more dangerous I'd think, to leave the girlfriend. Congrats on the anniversary :)
Excellent, SidepodPicnicChat?
Red dot works in the republic if you are up near the NI border, or down near the se corner (there is a transmitter on Anglesey for freeview). I don't know about sat. TV though. No freeview to be had anywhere if you are over on the west coast though (so I'm told, no direct experience, lol, unless DP suddenly decides that there is something he really wants to go and get a job in in the EU office for where he is.. but that's his call, lol).
What do you do? If that isn't too nosey, or OT for here (apols if you've said before, but sometimes I live with my head in a hole and don't take stuff in pmsl)
Laptop in the kitchen ;) woot
I did find it amusing when i saw the photos on drop io this morning. i figure we'd be getting something!
Yes, though I prefer sideparkcast.
Aaah, thats a nice one.
Mr C, can you see this?
OK, so it was posted whilst I was posting. So scratch the last bit of the post....
Brilliant!
:D
have a look a few comments below :) thanks for being interested.
as for offtopic ness - yeah not sure - in summer we had almost anything goes here - i figured it was a daily and i'll shut up in 15 minutes and we get on with other random stuff :)
He got you an ice cream, what more do you want? :P
jon!!
whooopsadooodle.
to be fair, im getting a bit of help from her, but im still doing most of it
Oooo - will have to find link.. .but there are those jobs going at the OU atm, and they are on longer contracts than a year.
Something in Bristol at the med school as well atm, cos someone else I know is applying, but I think that that is probably for immediate postgrad/phd given the person I know. Actually - there are lots of those sorts of jobs around in the UK atm..... (there is DoH money going into projects, and then the whole Welcome trust thing going on - you could end up at Imperial and the Science museum being your 'local' rofl).
Aww! It's the thought that counts :)
I had to go down to imperial the other week for something, I thought it was an odd place indeed... Then again the computery bit may not be the same as the medically bit
Really .. I've not seen any :(
Risotto needs constant stirring and adding the stock a little at a time... sticking is 'not good' unless its crispy cheesy bits... (Locatelli is worth a read on such matters, lol).
Although I'm probably resorting to something in a tin today, or I will have to wash up the past mumblemumble days worth including a chocolate cake batter covered bowl.......
You possibly know about http://www.jobs.ac.uk for academic jobs in the UK?
Sit rep on my laptop - got Skype, Spotify and Live Messenger and FF3 all installed. Pretty much the essentials for me :D
Mmmmmm, could go for some more of that right now!
Desktop Doohickey?
purplegoth looks spot on... a quick glance at jobs.ac.uk seems to show quite a few jobs going round at bristol uni and university of western england (never heard of it either)
...and jackie beat me to the namedrop, *and* she bothered to link it
True depends on the field you are looking for I guess, there's very little in mine
i think i'll be applying for Imperial next week - think i saw something this morning....hmm. Bristol huh? i'll check it out? is this a similar line of work for you?
Ooh good call!
what is DoH? department of heikki?
i do now! thanks :) i think i did 2 years ago, but i'd forgotten it.
I'd work for that DoH any day
set live timing password up :)
There's also http://www.phdjobs.com/ though I've not found that useful
Ah yes, for the official F1 site. Will have to see if BBC's live monitor thing is working for practice tomorrow too. Or is it only for the race?
Is this you as well then?
Maybe I just read the forums where genetic-types congregate (one or two places with silly number of cambridge or similar lab based people post to while away the time whilst stuff grows in little dishes of jelly, or titrates...)... Bristol-applying chap is a bacterialogical specialist apparently - todays post elsewhere from him is all about finding something interesting at the back of a humidicupboard in the Vet school and how the whole lab had to don protective stuff to save some as a sample because it was too interesting to just sterilise everything as they could never leave whatever it was to grow that long on purpose under H&S)
The imperial/welcome jobs I saw advertised (think it was on a forum somewhere though - probably worth a search on the welcome website though) were in the Human genome project. I don't understand enough on the subject to understand more of the ad than the bit about having a PhD plus professional publication (that I do understand cos one day I may do the former, already have the latter :-) albeit only an extract in something 16 years ago when I was too young/green to appreciate it
also http://www.findapostdoc.com/ but i haven't spent much time looking - really been looking at naturejobs.com for a bout a week and got one interview from 4 applications so I'm pretty content, but need to go crazy on the weekend and start looking in more places.
thanks for all your input :) much appreciated :)
Different field unfortunately, mine's Neuroscience
my china preview
the chinese grand prix has come around way too soon. it rarely provides compelling racing and having to suffer the land of the sinking track, twice in six months is just not on.
that said, we're still looking for something of a more 'normal' race in '09, to better gauge the relative positions of the field and maybe the massive undulating asphalt will provide the answers we crave this weekend.
I'll check it out. i do have a profession publication...I'm famous amongst at least 7 people in the world.
nice to see some fellow science "boffins" in here :)
This bit sounds too much like Ronspeak :D
was i too off topic ? :)
Its better to get it out of the way
BTW, where can I download the desktop doohickey? Link? :)
i go and have dinner and come back to 72 comments!
:D
who hasn't been featured in f1 digest this year, and which newbie's arm can we twist to write a couple of paragraphs?
I dont think lou has
Amy?
i cant keep up tonight with all the comments!
nope. the daily post is designed for going off topic.
christine's doing f1 digest, and i had something to add. i could tell her direct of course but i want to join in like everyone else ;)
And give it a bit of a plug
Oh////
Nope, my background is Antropology/NVC/(magic, virtual community structures as specifics) (for academics) and stuff around journalism/broadcasting/things with words in/autonomous education (for real life, lol). And a hefty reading habit...
West of England is much maligned (formerly Bristol Polytechnic) but has a hefty clutch of 3 and 4 star departments, particularly in Arts/Media/Cultural, Psych and Nursing and Computing/AI.
But I'm biased cos I went there (as UWE by then, spent 3 years at Bower Ashton stuck with the arts students cos that is where they built the studios, constantly having to run to St Matts and Coldharbour when I needed the library or the computers)... Andy was at Coldharbour when it was the poly... Just don't ask, OK...
that too. but primarily 'cause i like not being in the podcast, but just joining in with the fun.
Ahem, a Desktop Doohickey download link please? :)
Go on, I'll write a couple
that's what i thought :) but shouldn't you be cooking dinner ? :)
if amy is still awake, we're going to have to call a doctor.
Its somewhere, Mr C will know
!!!!
:D
Oh yeah, I forgot. She's in Australia.
I don't think she could see Federer geat beat at 2am
soz:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/desktop/sidepodcastdesktop.air
On that basis Valencia should come first...
Food poisoning for table 1... ;)
Mr C's brain: "coo...king? what is this cooking you speak of?"
*hugs DD*
it's my laptops best friend
Never again :)
if it's not on computer, it's not worth getting. words that got me through a phd.
Ta :)
Can you disguise McDonalds for your own food?
Where do I save it?
i love what you guys do with this place, but i just couldn't resist stirring up trouble...
*hugs LCLT*
cos its needin some love
desktop :)
Program Files probably
Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Principal Skinner tried to pass Krusty Burgers for his own cooking and calling them Steamed Hams :D
i have been once.. when Jenson won ;) but tbh i don't have much to say about China... erm.... i hope it doesn't rain?...
!!!
sorry dumb question, but what is this desktop thingy we'Re talking about? i know i have drifted around for the last few months, but..
Perfect :)
Your not going to like the BBC weather forecast
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/1713
it is quite simple the greatest thing ever made. einstein? that guy had nothing on the desktop doohickey.
i do like a bit of rain. the key word here is BIT.
Erm...I've put the doohickey file on the desktop. Now what? :P
Open it
With what program?
adobe air
Desktop Doohickey, just double click on it
ahhh. we may have forgotten to mention the bit about adobe air!
Do we have a page on the wiki about it?
I will write some step by steps for the wiki shortly.
we may need one. although in theory DD doesn't exist yet. just for those in the know.
If you can't get it working on vista reboot your computer, that worked for me
scott, you'll need this too:
http://get.adobe.com/air/
rules me out :)
nudge, nudge.
Already on it sir :P
are you getting me back for the cooking comments ? :)
not yet...
great :( you're just warning up, huh.
dank's putting more money down.
Betting his way to Spa, eh? Novel way of doing it, I suppose.
SPC Desktop doohickey is up and running! :D
w00t!
LOL I thought you wanted to promote lclt?
damnit :(
desktop lclt has to be next
*run*
I for one look forward to the official desktop doohickey....if there is gonna be a proper final one. i'm it's biggest fan!
wise... very wise.
What's wrong with that...
It's going onto the list isn't it? :D
there will be. christine basically tweeted earlier that she also wants it to feature a live video player!
you wont out run Mr C ;)
The Sidepodcast equivelant of msn
Then all of Lukeh's wildest dreams will come true!
Evening everyone. Just got in the door from the station. What an excellent couple of days!
China preview
Are we back already? Better to get it out of the way now I suppose. I don't expect much from the racing, but it will be interesting to see how the teams with new diffusers get on. I still think we will see the Brawns and Toyotas at the front and the Ferraris near the back.
:D :D
hi pat :)
mr c already knows what would make the dd perfect for my dreams ;)
I really have no idea what your on about now
Ah but he's got to find me first :D
sidepodracearoundhydepark?
It's cause Mr C was running after LPG and Andy's son yesterday
Ahhh, so where did the original *run* come from after my desktop lclt comment?
cause i really have a long enough list as it is. as much as we appreciate new ideas n'all.
I said run in response to your desktop Lclt comment
I'm up to date now. Carry on.
I upped my Grid time to the wiki a few days ago. You'll notice a significant different between 3rd and 4th place :D
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/GRID+Laptime+challenge
*stunned*
I come back to find former IndyCar driver and current Indy Lights team owner Bryan Herta is following me on Twitter.
regardless?
I'm impressed (I think :D )
Don't worry, I'm now on a flight to Russia
Heh :-)
On further reading I have a feeling it could be his team's PR people, but I'm still floored.
In the words of James May, oh cock.
that's cool!
I'm gonna make a cuppa then try and catch up on all the goings on.
good luck with that, betcha there will be another 50 comments meantime
This will probably sound like a dumb questions, but I was wondering do the marshalls get to keep the parts, like actually wings, after they have come off a car?
Has it really been that busy? I haven't even checked yet.
Ooh, I should do a lap...
When I was at croft, i was talking to marshalls as they said that the big parts like wings go back to the team to examine, but the smaller parts can be kept
I wasn't away for very long, and had 66 comments to catch up on...
BTW I recruited another follower. Comment from mi'blog:
:o.... Dad just walked in and asked me if i still wanted a car, after 6 months of waiting for driving lessons i kinda shrugged and nodded and turned back to the comments. he then replied 'So you don't want the car i'm buying for you then?'.... apparently he is trying to sort out the insurance tomorrow... *is shocked* i may actually get to learn to drive soon.... yay!
Ha! I am still fastest! :D
Roll on the Codemasters F1 game. Then you are all truly getting owned.
So whos already put carbon fiber stairs on their christmas list?
I haven't tried to beat it yet ;) I have a nice long day off tomorrow!
Considering most people here are likely to get it, who knows.
Plus I'll own the PSP league of it.
that's awesome. i hope it's not a ferrari. they're slow and they smoke like you need a new muffler.
You've got 4 tenths to find, Brawn Boy! ;)
Erm, nope .. that totally underwhelmed me I'm afraid. The sticky back aluminium that Bassano had was much cooler
i was thinking about the Wellington boots tbh but now you've reminded me of the stairs i'll be putting them on top of my list ;)
We need to do full grid races on that. Can't wait. Still no news on it, keeping my ear to the ground though.
The Fred Hutchenson Cancer Research Center and the companies that surround it like Amgen in Seattle are always hiring in those fields. I don't think you would want to put up with the 5:00-7:00 AM start times for F1 though.
I dunno actually, if someone can paint the carbon fibre stairs white, I'll get them, the wellies and the Ron Dennis Cryogenics Pod and be dreaming of a white christmas :D
hehe :D
Brilliant :D I hope he won't choke at the cost of insuring it
Ah cool. Thanks :)
And that's just the tyres after you've finished doing burnouts.
haha :) i think he is prepared for the cost of it... but never the less i'll be keeping out of his way tomorrow (he may be slightly grumpy ;) )
oooh fantastic, that's great news considering how long you've been talking about it :)
Thanks Dan. They're vaguely on the list of places to look at :) i used to work with some of their data. hmm. west coast. not good for f1...
My daughter wanted me to add her to my insurance .. the 1200 pounds made it easy to say NO
Damn right you should. What format do you have it on?
Chris, who's next for choosing category and track?
You know you are an F1 fan when you go to an auto dealership, take a test drive, and then ask the dealership to increase the tension in the torsion bar, shorten 5th gear a little bit, and to bring the bring down the dampers several hundred newtons.
:)
for all those who couldn't be present. the sidepodpicnic/sidepodpark conversation in full:
the plan is to put this out as an edited podcast asap. we'll keep you posted. in the meantime, enjoy!
I'm watching way too much football to listen right now, but cheers for it anyway ;)
ooh fantastic :)
You were there!
Awesome :D
loving all the ace pics in drop.io. thank you everyone.
Alex says "Erm" a lot :D
I either do that or say very little.
Aww, the little girl is sweeeeeet! :D
No that was me. No Me but me.
After looking at the photos from the trip, I think this whole sidepodreligion thing has some merit. The photo of Christine talking with everyone sitting around her listening looked vaugely familar.
Vettel's the nearly man of the field this season. He gets into a great position, but nearly makes it to the end.
:D
Genius, just geniusly true
!!
PS3.
Was asking incase you had it on 360 for XBL, nevermind :P Fire away with the lap times. If you even beat Luke, I'll be amazed.
Why were people saying Toyota to copy the diffuser? They already have one!
Interesting no-one said BMW.
Evening all. Just got back from a placement interview and first thing I see is the unedited sidepodpicnic. Yay!
Wow, nice thinking on McLaren Gavin.
"I LIKE HIS CAR!" Cuuuuuuuuuuute! :D
Awww the Mclaren answer from LPG and andy's daughter was so so cute even listening back for a second time (obviously) :)
how did it go?
daily post's over 'ere.
*waves frantically*
oops... sorry :(
:)
Just a pity its not very good.
Valencia got on last year though, even with the seeming dislike of Europe from Bernie.
Mr C likes to talk very fast :D
We can disguise the Algarve as an Asian track, fool him with a night flight the equivelent of Qatar
The cynics would argue bernie will use valencia as an excuse why europe doesn't need more races considering how boring the race was last year.
Gavin should talk for an hour. He's an excellent speaker, love hearing from him.
you shoulda been in the pub!
I bet you don't know what kind of car the camera was really attached to
Ha!
I'd say Ferrari with the diffuser. BMW a not-to-distant 2nd.
By the way, guess what I found in Regent Street today
Grrr... I keep getting the first corner wrong...
Wasn't it the director's Mercedes?
Time to try and beat Scott on grid :)
apple store?
I get every corner wrong with F3 cars tbh. :P
I think Red Bull won't be great with the diffuser. Having to do such a big redesign will hurt them.
I saw that but I don't have any Apple things.
No - I found a shop called Pole Position selling F1 gear. I arrived 15 minutes after their first shipment of BrawnGP gear. There were 6 hats left when I got there. I bought one.
Sorry!
Not bad. I don't think I messed up at all. Just need to see how the others did!
wow. we may need a pic of that :)
The guy ahead of me bought one and got on the phone to find out how many he should reserve for others (not sure if it was family or mates)
Give my phone a sec to get some juice and I'll dropio it.
soooo not jealous. :(
Although im happy with my own self made brawn merchandise for now
?
Yeah, that keyring was cool!
when will you find out?
brawn keyrings :D
The shop assistants were astonished at how quickly they were flying out. They hadn't had time to put price labels on them. The polo shirts were going too but I'd spent money on DVDs already by then so thought I had to restrict myself to the Brawn and Aston Martin hats.
:( He must have been about 90
"Next week some time" They always say that. Still waiting on one of them...
wow! awesome stuff
Evening Steven
Which shop is this you speak of?
Is Chris Evans around?
BrawnGP merch news:
Shop assistant confirmed they had a meeting with Henri Lloyd rep yesterday and the Brawn stuff will not be substantially changing to reflect Virgin sponsorship. It'll remain focussed on the Brawn name.
I heard about that place from a mate, didn't get to go sadly :(
You know, there's a shop in Chapelfield in Norwich that sells Henri Lloyd. Do you think they might stock some Brawn gear? :D
If you enter Regent Street from Picadilly it is on your right.
I knew it was there because I told Gavin about it yesterday, but I had never found it before.
yay! :D
hehe :D so am i :)
http://www.poleposition.com/
It has the same branding as DC's grooming products so I'm sure they are connected somehow.
I showed my rubens one today to my boss and he replied 'doesn't he drive for ferrari?' This is the same guy that questioned whether nigel mansell was still driving so I wasn't surprised. ;)
So I was able to provide that news but I kicked myself heavily on the tube back to Waterloo for not mentioning SPC. I'm not good 'on the fly'.
Done my Fantasy Racers team:
Alonso
Nakajima
Webber
Kubica
Bourdais
Buemi
Oh yeah, league number and password for the Sidepodcast league?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/01/03/fantasy-racing-2009/
Ah. It looks like all my photos appeared in dropio with some automated message from Orange as a comment. Sorry about that.
Thanks, joined.
OUCH!
Still - performance car at age 30 - £297 fully comp. :D
that's cool. all orange users do the same :)
Ferrari tat store
pah, thats nothing, i would be £1800 to my mums car, boo
I just had a bad lap where i went wide on the hairpin and neaerly slid out on the last corner yet it was 1:24.96... cmon you silly car!
What I don't get is why Hamilton is still some £12m on FR. Shouldn't that be much lower?
Guess it depends a ot on where you live .. 75% no claim discount and I'm $430 for a Mazda 323 1400 cc
Oh the pressure :D
Yes that too. I took a look because Gavin told me there was an F1 in there. There was. I left before I got infected with Tifosidom.
that should be pounds not dollars
An F1 CAR
I've started crashing lots...
He's still the reigning world champion, so it should only be £9M at least.
they must be trying to "mislead" you ;)
I was in Venice and accidently came across a Ferrari shop with the F2002 inside, considering this was in the back streets, I'm amazed how they had managed to get all the parts through without damaging cos the only access they had was a 2 person wide street.
I just can't get round a corner at a decent speed, always going too slow because I can't turn the damn car. Even at the last chicane, I slide on the kerbs.
My leading team, Zero Downforce, is back on page 6! :( Here's hoping Brawn and Toyota do the business this weekend again. I needs them points.
I'm having big problems with that chicane tonight. :(
No idea. Sorry
Oh be quiet. Fantasy Racers results is not worth talking about
I wasn't aware that FR prices are based on driver popularity in-game. Maybe that explains Hamilton.
Why? Are you even lower down, is that it?
84. Such a fantastic voice and a magnificently funny person.
Oh, and Peter Rogers. the chap responsible for all the Carry On films died on tuesday too. :(
big change from last year.
Yeah, just a bit, basically half your page, add three, divide by three and add eight
And he's massively outperforming the car. Cracking drives in a frankly poor car.
10?
I'd say strategy it's part just as much.
Did I say half your page? Double it
1:23:92!!!!
Oh...
Bugger.
How I look forward to when I'm choosing. :D
13 then.
Can we have a league for who's team is worth the most .. I think I'd be quite high ;)
The track is in Canada. They help CART races there. The track is narrow, falls apart, and twisty if I remember it right.
yep, a very fun 314th.
I could swear i was 312th before.
people may have joined the league ahead of you.
Damn all those 6 driver teams. Grrr.
They held a Champ Car race there in 2007 and it looked alright then. Pretty fun track as I recall. I think they spent a bit of money making it look better, upgrading gravel traps, etc. Worth visiting by IndyCar but it isn't up to F1 standard.
Its just making me more depressed.
If you have more than 776 points, please dont join just yet
I don't see the benefits.
I daren't take Jenson or Rubens out of any of my teams. Yes they're worth lots, but I wouldn't see much benefit in terms of budget.
That is if I took them out then back in again.
Believe me, I tried that before Malaysia.
Not put Jenson or Rubens in mine. Really didn't want to get anyone at or over £10M.
Wait, some people have more than 1 team?
If you donate you can have 5.
Get in, biggest contributer to the daily thread at the moment according to my desktop doohickey.
I made the mistake of slagging them off before the season and thought they would be a pointless buy.
Jarno is becoming quite expensive, I'm happy I got him when he was only like £7 million
Here is a video of the track of Mount Tremblant.

I'm starting to think about doing a Honda and thinking about next season's game. Despite both Brawns and Toyotas in my top team now, I don't think I'll stand a chance of even reaching the top 25. :/
Here's something from the Autosport Gallery archives. Had no idea Fernando did this at all!
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/index.php/id/86
I'm gonna play Football Manager for a while, gotta do something until Practice 1, and I'm staying up for it. :P
Am forcing myself to give in at 1:25.80 because otherwise this will carry on all night and I'll miss FP1...
Classic Beetle? Classic (sic) Cinquicento? Triumph something or another?
Do that and you'll miss Practice 1
Ooh, China Digest preview is up :)
no. sadly not. it's a VW fox for me i think.. a relatively new one... 2006 i think.
Although Seattle is supposedly quite a nice place to live :-) I could possibly point you at one or two English peeps over there who would share your F1 needs and know of a decent pub...
Haha, it's so frustrating sometimes but so much fun. I've started a game with Basingstoke. You know the perils of it I see. ;)
Should go off here anyway, gotta give FM a chance to run at a decent pace. (My pc has 256 MB RAM, talk about suck.)
for those staying up, digest (china preview) is now available in your feeds and here:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/16/f1-digest-2009-china-preview/
I'm starting one as Notts County soon on my PSP, managed to get Arsenal indirectly relegated once, so its all fun
Start is 2:55, yeah, i'll stay up
To be sure, whereever, and whenever I go somewhere, I'll still be around here, possibly looking at the SPC listener map to find a fellow fan :)
how did you do that? :)
To be fair, it came up on identi.ca before you posted
ahh, ok. i still typed as quick as i could :)
i'm wondering if i should stay up or not... i'm not sure i'd be able to get up in time for FP2 if i did..
Ack - could have rec. a really nice garage for a beetle :-( (that and insurance on them, even for a 17/18 year old, can be teeny tiny...)
Dad's not too keen on beetles unfortunately. :(
Bah.
Good ones are still expensive.
Seriously look at something larger. I know several people who while learnign have insured a 1.8litre Mondeo for less than a Clio or Saxo or the like.
If you mean "New Beetles", they're not really proper Beetles. The engine is in the wrong end for starters.
I'm not. I'd forgotten it was tomorrow. Night all!
but he's had years and years in the car business and got a nice deal on this car so :) tbh i'm just pleased it's got 4 wheels, and has relatively few miles on the clock :)
I'm genuinely dreading getting into a new car after my lessons and I pass. for 2 weeks I changed from the Ibiza I learn in to a Renault Clio that was a realy run down old model and it was an absolute catastrophe :(
If he buys a car he has to organise driving lessons. Then you have to get him to send you to race school
Hehe. Apple has taken the unusual step of actually commenting on a Microsoft ad. The current TV campaign shows Microsoft offering "ordinary people" (or paid actors) the cash to buy a laptop if they can find what they want for a certain price. All of the ads show the "ordinary person" rejecting a Mac in favour of a PC. The comment:
"A PC is no bargain when it doesn't do what you want .... The one thing that both Apple and Microsoft can agree on is that everyone thinks the Mac is cool. With its great designs and advanced software, nothing matches it at any price."
:D
hehe ;) he has the numbers of 3 driving instructors on post its around his desk.. each day i copy them out again and stick another post it to his desk. atm there are 9.
That's the rumour. Watch it with the sound off and the suspension looks really soft. Completely ruins the film though.
Hi Jackie
It was the Merc. There are some photo's that show the Merc with the gyro stabilised camera on the front.
It was also the director driving, not a F1 driver.
Just found a song on Spotify called "It's Rally Ireland Time" which is literally about Rally Ireland. :D
I know it was a popular track in the 70s but I have no idea what it looks like
Looks like a fun track to drive. A bit Brands hatch / Oulton Park. You could run F1 round there though.
They are just Golfs with a different body shell and a flower holder.
Indeed. Ugh.
:D
lol
I wasn't suggesting a new one... gordon bennett not!!
The proposed car gets a decent amount of write ups though :-)
Gmail sets a new pesonal record for a single days worth of spam - 72 emails. Good job google! *grumbles*
Btw, wrong place
Yes I really do :)
I was trying to read on a doohicky that kept moving down during the middle of a sentence because another comment would come in. That's my excuse and I'm Erm sticking to it! ;)
Untick the Refresh real-time stream thingy
Not really, it was about China and moved on from there.
Well, erm, erm, erm, carry erm on. Erm...
It was on about the schedule but I'll be quiet
Yes... But then Christine told me off for not finding new comments fast enough ;) I couldn't win!
Here is me saying Erm a lot :)

I wonder who took that pic?
MrC and Flibster were sat roughly at that angle but anyone could have wandered over and taken it.
Wasn't me. Haven't gone through my photo's yet.

So he is the Jeremy Clarkson to Amy’s Richard Hammond?
Amy is Massa, I’m Webber and Mr.C is Justin Wilson (if anyone remembers him).
If Mr. C can not fit into a 1992 Williams, can we compare him to Nigel Mansell?
Don’t you mean a 1995 McLaren?
Hell. No. Nigel could not fit into a '92 Williams. True that he bumped off Coulthard for a couple of races near the end of the season, but the last two went Back to Coulthard cause Mansell was to big (Frankspeak for "fat") to fit into the Williams....
At least if McLaren wanted to, they could have have built the car around Mansell, if they had enough carbon fibre to do so in 1995. In 1992, Williams had to shoehorn Mansell into what was Senna's/Coulthard's old car....
I think you have your years mixed up Jordan. Mansell won the championship in the 92 Williams. You are confusing 92 and 94.
Right, I'm going with Joe's route of playing on Football Manager, see ya at half 2
Just listening to the meet up mp3.
Happy Birthday RG!
Indeed (with 12 mins to spare)
Happy Birthday fella!
Okay everyone start singing Dead Or Alive's smash hit from 1985....
"You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)..."
Makes more sence. But still he was too fat to get into the Williams. So I can not remember why McLaren was considering him in '95.
Thinking about Super Mario Kart myself. :)
I think it was the first year with Mercedes and they needed a name driver and he had the right initial. It was Marlboro McLaren Mercedes the drivers were Mansell and Mika and the test drivers were Magnussen and Mark(Blundell). Had his name not begun with an M he had no chance.
:D
I should also say that McLaren had signed Coulthard for 95 but he already had a contract with Williams so his move was cancelled late in the day leaving them with few options.
There are photos of questionable quality making their way to drop.io as I type.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00752-jpg
even now they make me laugh!
Cheers Pat, saw the updates coming in and was wondering who it was
Very well done
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc00761-jpg
I genuinely have no idea why I took a photo of some stairs.
these aren't any old stairs... these are marks and sp, I mean, carbon fiber stairs. ;)
Who is that maske... err... hatted man?
i love that picture of Mika's mclaren, excellent stuff :)
nooo idea.. never seen him before in my life :)
Ta. You can't turn down the opportunity if it presents itself, and I did get his approval afterwards :-)
Those were the pick of the bunch, the others I took were too blurred due to too much movement. I can't keep myself still for long enough and the darkness meant I had to hold the camera for longer than usual.. You may have seen me resting the camera on the perspex barrier - that was those shots :-)
G'Day everyone.
hello there :D
Hi Sean
Hi Sean
Jack Good (codebreaker and a father of modern computing has died as well :-( )
Obit from the Times for tomorrow

i think we have a new follower of spc, i just went to go and get a cup of tea, and i come back into my room to find my cat following the comments :)

Heya
don't tell me the one time i decide to stay up till practise everyone goes to sleep...
Is anyone doing Fantasy Racers' IndyCar game? I'm signing up now, missed race 1 but I was wondering if there's enough interest for an SPC league.
it has gone eerily quiet...
the calm before the storm?
I'm dipping in and out
I wasn't planning to stay up for FP but I wanted to get some blogging done. Might have to leave it until the morning.
It doesn't help when I get distracted by fantasy racing games.
i would but i don't know the first thing about IndyCar.
Hey again. Stuttgart got a bit boring for early morning
I think this was a bad idea... starting to get tired now...
im feeling more awake now than when i was working :D
hehe :D
I find that 3am is the worst time for something to be on. It's hard to stay up for it (and stay awake to the end) but its too early to go to sleep and get up for.
Nothing wrong with 3am.
Ahh crap, now im wondering if Jens Lehmann should be sold or not to allow the youngsters to get a game ahead of an inept keeper. Now maybe 4-3-3 will work better than 4-4-2. Maybe one more game...
yeah, i agree. i blame bernie.
[shows RG the yellow card for mentioning football] :)
for me the annoying hours are between 3 and 6am... they're just silent hours. I cant explain it, it's just such annoying hours to be up because it feels like nothings happening and everythings so quiet and just... I dunno. Silly mind.
Me, it wasn't me, he clearly dived for it, I just can't believe you fell for that, bloomin diver he is
so have you had a good birthday R.G?
Birthday eh? Happy birthday!
I had a lazy one and I enjoying having a lazy one. Apart from going to Wickes, I did nowt.
oh :) did you get any nice presents?
Some BMW stuff (don't tell Timo I got a Nick Heidfeld cap), new Falcons shirt and a bit of cash. So it was good.
Sounds good!
:D do we get a picture of you in your new BMW stuff? with page 22 of course ;)
Will do at a sensible hour ;)
:D
Predictions from Mr Murray!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/murraywalker/2009/04/my_chinese_grand_prix_predicti.html
So everyone's staying up for FP1, I assume?
Yep :D
I'm doing my usual ting of looking through photos from the race weekend, and todays photos of the brawn guys are hilarious. But i just wanted to point out this one - i agree with Lukeh that it's possibly the best smile ever!
it is so brilliant! how can one man produce such a mad smile!
Insanely odd indeed, just how?
:D
I want whatever Brawn are handing out inside the motorhome behind him
A photo that lou just showed me of Rubens instantly made me think that he looked like something else.... so.... spot the difference!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/spotthedifference-jpg
:D
I got it, the egg has cracked in one
:D hahaha.
Err.. one on the right has more fluff on it's head?
I love that a bunch of us went round the back to have a nose at the diffuser on a 10 year old McLaren. It just seems to be the done thing when you get near a car recently.
next time you think you are having a bad hair day take a look at this
:D
It looks like my hair before I got it cut...
Cept mine was a bit longer, but still, it's pretty similar.
That's a stupid idea. Who in China cares about any kind of racing? Nobody turns up for the GP unless they are forced to. Allegedly.
