It's D-Day all round for everyone, as we should be getting the results of the diffuser hearing, and we're also heading to the science museum for the meetup. So, chances are those two items will dominate discussions today:

  • Big apologies to anyone not going to the Science Museum who has had to put up with us wittering on about the Sidepodscience meetup for weeks now. If it makes you feel any better, I'm spending my one year wedding anniversary in a stuffy museum looking at F1 technology that will probably all go way over my head.
  • Having said that, we should have lots to talk about with the lovely people we meet, and we'll take some pictures and report back to you as we always do. We'll be taking as much equipment as mobility allows so that if the opportunity arises we can snap photos, record audio and maybe even capture some video. Who knows what will happen?
  • Finally, we'll be keeping our ear to the ground and waiting for the diffuser decision. Part of me thinks the FIA will string it out and make us wait another couple of days. They have the power, you know. However, should the result occur today, we will finally found out how the rest of the championship is going to shape up, and at last it can be put to rest... as if!

That'll do it for today. Again, apologies to those who aren't sciencing it up, but there will be plenty more opportunities for meetups in the future. Thank you to my mother-in-law for manning the blogging pumps in our absence and I will see you in the comments (as much as signal and battery life allows).

I' even contemplating *not* bringing a packed lunch for the children and braving wfm with them in tow!!

Although that could be a slightly silly thing to do to the bank account....

Earliest on there at the moment is 1937 - will have some going back to 1932

    Most recent is 2008... 8O

  • littlepurplegoth14/04/2009 at 23:39

    um

the 2nd (really big one) which? depending on where you are in relation to it, all wars could be 'really big' :-P

rofl.. I'm being difficult... ended up listening to Desmond carrington this evening, and yesterday (monday) afternoon on r2 was similarly 'big band'... does seem to be a bit of a theme on that way of thinking atm.

Hmmmm - probably not the time to admit to owning Margeritte Pattern cook books or collections of 'make do and mend' leaflets is it?

  • littlepurplegoth14/04/2009 at 23:40

wfm = whole foods market on Kensington High Street (aka on the way to the science museum). Not often that vegan junk food can be easily partaken of, lol(except that I did that show last week so have been there within the last week, er, um....)

  • Flibster14/04/2009 at 23:42

thank gord I don't post here under my own name though, that could get interesting (although possibly a lot less links that are actually for me, as there are a lot of dead people and some americans with my name :-) )

  • Dan Brunell15/04/2009 at 00:17

This is a fun game, go on google, type in whatever name you have for sidepodcast, how many of the results are related to it? and to you?

Actually, only of the top ten which is the Wiki. All ten have to do with me but for other things like facebook, imdb, twitter, and work stuff things.

  • Bassano Clapper15/04/2009 at 00:18

    recently or a while back?

A year ago this week, tis why it came up tonight.

Update for anyone who cares (I think they've all gone to bed): My arrival might be 30 minutes later than advertised. Depends how quickly I can get up and out of the door in the morning as to which train I get.

  • Pat W15/04/2009 at 00:35

If this Chilean Merlot hangover-to-be doesn’t get the better of me ;)

I've purposely not drunk much, but I've accidentally stayed up over an hour later than intended, trying to make my crappy old MP3 player work.

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 00:35

Your not going to get much. I dont even know why.

I understand why and am inclined to agree.

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 00:35

I'm off for a while too. Gotta head up the shops to pick up a couple of things. I shall return later.

Email your number to SPC towers and our exact whereabouts should be communicated hopefully.

Then again, Sidepodtime exists on tour too...

  • Bassano Clapper15/04/2009 at 00:37

... but I’ve accidentally stayed up over an hour later than intended, trying to make my crappy old MP3 player work.

Luckily, I'm less than an hour away from the meet-up

  • Pat W15/04/2009 at 00:40

Email your number to SPC towers and our exact whereabouts should be communicated hopefully.

Have done so. I should still be there before 1pm. I had expected to get to the museum at 12:20 or so but if I get the later train it will get in at 12:20.

Luckily, I’m less than an hour away from the meet-up

I'll see if I can doze on the train.

  • Bassano Clapper15/04/2009 at 00:44

I'm wondering if there'll be enough web access folks tomorrow for us to get up to the minute info on the Diffuser results

Am not expecting anything too early in the day

  • Bassano Clapper15/04/2009 at 00:46

Follow SPC, were/I’m sure to be updating you

If Giggles turns up, he'll be Doohickey enabled

Mr & Mrs C have their iPod Touch I guess, if anywhere should be totally WiFi, the science museum should be it!

  • Pat W15/04/2009 at 00:47

I’m wondering if there’ll be enough web access folks tomorrow for us to get up to the minute info on the Diffuser results

I expect Mr & Mrs C to have the necessary gadgets, Alex too.

We'll probably rely on comments here to alert us to info.

  • Pat W15/04/2009 at 00:52

Roight. For those I'm seeing tomorrow I look forward to meeting you.

For everyone else enjoy having a bit more room to play with here, and keep us supplied with info! I look forward to catching up on the aftermath of the meetup and the diffuser hearing when I return on Thursday night.

I've got the dropio and twitpic email addresses stored in my phone in case they are needed, and if I'm not too embarrassed in public I might do more Page22 stuff on the way up :-)

  • Pat W15/04/2009 at 00:53

    Good night :-)

  • Alianora La Canta15/04/2009 at 01:23

This is a fun game, go on google, type in whatever name you have for sidepodcast, how many of hte results are related to it? and to you?

    of the 10 that show… {Comment #94}

What surprised me was that my psuedonym shows up in Google when I start typing it in. Seeing as I rarely use that particular search engine, I was a bit puzzled. Never mind...

    I get:

    - my blog

    - my member profile at the forum I co-admin

    - my NoBloPoMo page

    - my Sidepodcast Wiki page

    - my list of discussion in NaBloPoMo

    - my NaNoWriMo profile

    - my Club Force profile

    - an F1 Fanatic on Kimi Raikkonen's reaction to the 2009 regulations, on which I happened to write a comment

    - my Sportnetwork profile (oddly attached to Racing Bulls, where I've commented twice, rather than Force Fans Online, where I admin)

    - a BlogF1 item on Eddie Jordan's concrete episode (where I wrote a comment)

So all ten are related to me but only one is related to Sidepodcast.

In Altavista, all 10 links again relate to me, but Sidepodcast gets two out of ten. One is for the wiki, the other is for the Daily Thread of 18th December.

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 01:23

    Anyone know what Piquet’s ‘negative comments’ were {Comment #192}

More or less the entire Q&A section in the April issue of F1 Racing could be construed as a bit negative. Nelson Piquet Jr. came across as slightly whingy there. I had no idea that the article was a translation...

"But at least you can overtake - mainly into Turns Four, 10 and 13 - so I hope we’ll see some great racing this weekend.” - Heikki Kovalainen on Shanghai Race.

I think he has more important things to worry about rather than overtaking in turns 10 and 13. You know, things like MAKING it to turns 10 and 13 for a start. :)

From James Allen's Blog post about diffusers - http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/04/14/possible-outcomes-from-the-diffuser-appeal/ :

Another possibility, which would really cause confusion and unhappiness among the teams, is that the court could rule that the FIA should clarify the technical rule, thereby putting the ball back into its court.

Such a clarification could take several weeks and leave the teams in a kind of limbo through the remaining fly-away races and the early European ones.

This outcome would be very hard for the public to understand.

If there's an option that could cause lots of confusion to the public I'm going to guess it's that one that the FIA pick!

There's been a few stories flying around saying that the "diffuser gang" are going to win. I won't believe anything until I here something official.

  • Alex Andronov15/04/2009 at 07:21

For those saying, "the decision has been delayed, maybe it will be delayed again".

It was always going to be announced on "Wednesday afternoon".

There’s been a few stories flying around saying that the “diffuser gang” are going to win. I won’t believe anything until I here something official.

Agreed, but then again, everything has pointed to this, and we haven't even heard any hints of the contrary. So I'm guessing this is true. But again, don't take anything for granted until we get the final word.

It was always going to be announced on “Wednesday afternoon”.

Doesn't everyone in the press know how to use a Media Centre? They are so spoiled now, it's all available online, they just need to find it and use it. And yet, some people...

It's true, everything has pointed to a yes, but lets face it, that was always the most likely outcome really. If your going to take a gamble, may as well be on the most likely winner.

  • Alex Andronov15/04/2009 at 07:45

Anyone like to take a punt on the first "the FIA are totally biased against x" story appearing?

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 07:52

Anyone like to take a punt on the first “the FIA are totally biased against x” story appearing?

    It'll happen after April 29, I think.

But if it does appear after today, this is what would happen. If the diffusers are banned, they'll point out FIArrari. If they're legal, they'll say it's a plot by Max to break up FOTA.

    Sidepodscience travel update!

After initially going the opposite direction to pick people up from Halifax, progress is now good. I'm somewhere outside Nottingham (thank you iPhone maps) and I should be moving from coach to train in half an hour or so. Luckily, I've managed to snooze for most of the journey so far so I shouldn't be too sleepy by the time I get there!

Heh. It isn't. People on here last night seemed to think that the decision had been meant to come out yesterday. And saw the fact that it was coming out today as though it was delayed. All I was saying was that it never was delayed in the first place. It was always due to come out today.

Just got to East Midlands Interchange. A very posh, snazzy station that is in the middle of nowhere. I am sat in the waiting room, and literally 50 metres away from me is a gigantic cooling tower. There are about ten if them running along one side of the track.

90% of my friends are in England or have spent a few years there, I moved to Australia instead, but definitely am mentally planning for when I get to go too. Can't blame ya! :D If you're going on the cheap, try Spa, Monza, and Silverstone/Donington. Spa-Monza, in particular, is usually a back-to-back, so special packages might be available. If Bernie does axe Britain, go for Nurburgring/Hockenheim instead.

Nah, I don't think so. It's not like this decision was unexpected. It will make her beam with joy, though. :D

Now - can Button convert this win into another 20 points over the next 2 weekends? If he can, then you'd have to admit, 4 out of 4 to start the season is pretty darn good.

That said, will the diffuser verdict affect the FOTA dynamics and their unity vs. the FIA? Will it put a further strain on Ferrari-FIA relations?

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 09:36

Methinks the fact that the decision was released in the morning means that making the decision wasn't too hard for the ICA. Which probably confirms my point yesterday - barring anything ground-breaking was revealed yesterday (which, as it turns out, didn't happen), the decision will have been already made a long time ago.

    I know? Most unlike me!

My train is delayed. I'm coming in from home rather than the office for complicated reasons :)

    6 minutes delayed.

The worst thing at Gypsy Hill is that trains on one platform go to London Bridge and also Victoria. And with my Victoria train delayed I almost got on the London Bridge train. Eeek!

For those out of the loop that would be pretty much 100% the wrong direction!

  • me15/04/2009 at 10:45

Leaving Chez Clapper now and will see the mob in about an hour

against your advice, we're parking at heathrow. :)

I haven't received the PM yet, so I still don't know which of the eight variations of RG I'm meant to send it to. Stupid computer :(

On Red Bull, why are they bothering with the diffuser? It's more work than the other teams that will now try it, and it could be bad for them if they get it not so right. They're not bad on pace now, so why threaten it? Same goes for Ferrari as they might not get the imporvements they need.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 11:32

I'm a bit confused with Red Bull aswell to be honest, especially if it takes as much redesign work with the Red Bull as is rumoured.

Ferrari on the other hand, need all the help they can get

Ferrari should take the risk imo, Red Bull do not need to.

  • Joe15/04/2009 at 11:35

I know Ferari should, but they might get it wrong, so it's a bit risky.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 11:36

I know Ferari should, but they might get it wrong, so it’s a bit risky.

Yeah but they havent scored any points yet, so i'm not sure they've got alot to loose. Plus if all the teams around them go faster and they don't because they don;t use one of these diffusers then they'll be even worse off

  • Chris15/04/2009 at 11:36

A collective hi to them all

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 11:42

Ferrari should take the risk imo, Red Bull do not need to.

Given how tight the midfield is right now, RBR can only ignore this at their own peril. When (not if) the other teams figure out how to make it work on their cars, they'll go faster, which means RBR will start slipping backwards - that's how significant the effect of the trick diffuser is.

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 11:42

On a non diffuser related issue, I was just watching this music quiz show we have here in Aus called Spicks and Specks, and while this was stated out of context, it made me laugh. They were talking to the person who sung the Aussie anthem at Melbourne, and one of the hosts said "Gees, who the hell organises the F1, the scouts?!" I thought it was funny that even non F1 followers or fans can still criticise how its run!

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 11:42

A collective hi to them all

Hello to everyone! How are Lou and Lukeh feeling? :D

Intresting I'm finding this, is that if Nick or Robert get injured, he's got to dash away from that and join BMW in Spain. So effectivley leaving two drivers. Now don't get me wrong and im not sounding biased here, but wouldn't Montagny be a better choice for this race then?

Afternoon all. Good news that the diffuser gang have all been declared legal for the 3rd and last time.

Anyways, Mr. Hamilton is back with another promotional ad, this time with Steve McQueen!

    http://www.tagheuer.com/the-news/events/baselworld2009-concours/?lang=en

There are parts of it where you can clearly see Hammy's car has been digitally added in. :D

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:07

There are parts of it where you can clearly see Hammy’s car has been digitally added in. :D

This ad is a bit silly, if you ask me.

    1. F1 car with headlights?

    2. Steve McQueen has passed away - who's the dubber then?

    3. Never mind Hammy's car - Hammy himself looks like he's been digitally added in.

Still, I guess it's better than that thing he did last year, flying around in the theater.

  • Christine15/04/2009 at 13:12

there's a big table but you can't touch it, and if you go near any of yhe display cases an alarm goes off. some kind of bicycle and a knee brace and that's about it.

now i'm being told off for live commenting instead of talking :)

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:12

there’s a big table but you can’t touch it, and if you go near any of yhe display cases an alarm goes off. some kind of bicycle and a knee brace and that’s about it.

big table is made of 2-3mm carbon fibre, its massive and properly strong.

bike has telemetry built into it

knee brace has some sort of suspension formed into it i think

Looking at the prizes for the Tag Heuer contest, I think I’d rather come third!

Its almost like, meh, Formula 1, don't care about that, lets chuck it over in that useless posistion no one cares about.

I mean you don't need a fancy watch, you just need one to tell you the damn time

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 13:21

    Link please?

    http://www.tagheuer.com/the-news/events/baselworld2009-concours/?lang=en

    Scott gave it before.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:22

Looking at the prizes for the Tag Heuer contest, I think I’d rather come third!

I was actually thinking... the prizes are screwed up! 3rd prize looks the most valuable, then 2nd, then 1st!

But reading the General Conditions, 2nd prize is worth 3 times that of 3rd, and 1st prize is more than 4 times that of 3rd.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 13:22

I mean you don’t need a fancy watch, you just need one to tell you the damn time

I dont even have a watch, i use my phone

  • RG15/04/2009 at 13:22

I dont even have a watch, i use my phone

Exactly. What is the point of fancy watches?

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:23

I dont even have a watch, i use my phone

A watch, especially a TAG Heuer, is more of a luxury item now - it's a nice-to-have, and very classy too.

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 13:23

Exactly. What is the point of fancy watches?

To show off. Or, to sell and buy third prize yourself ;)

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:23

Exactly. What is the point of fancy watches?

Classy-ness, looking chic, and all that fluff.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 13:23

I was actually thinking… the prizes are screwed up! 3rd prize looks the most valuable, then 2nd, then 1st!

it depends what it means by the driving day thing, if the helmet is full scale then thats probably the most valuable

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 13:24

it depends what it means by the driving day thing, if the helmet is full scale then thats probably the most valuable

But what do I want with a Lewis Hamilton helmet? If I had that, I'd definately sell it.

  • RG15/04/2009 at 13:24

Classy-ness, looking chic, and all that fluff.

I just want something that tells me the time not something which says to other people, hey i'm classy.

    My little moan about watches

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:25

it depends what it means by the driving day thing, if the helmet is full scale then thats probably the most valuable

If it's an F1 car, it's gonna be the most valuable, no matter how long it is.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 13:25

But what do I want with a Lewis Hamilton helmet? If I had that, I’d definately sell it.

Depending on the size...id wear it lol

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:25

But what do I want with a Lewis Hamilton helmet? If I had that, I’d definately sell it.

I'd keep it - and maybe sell it later. Its value will rocket up, especially if Lewis does some more winning in future.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 13:26

If it’s an F1 car, it’s gonna be the most valuable, no matter how long it is.

It wont be an F1 car though, teams hardly ever let people drive their cars

  • Sean Golding15/04/2009 at 13:27

It wont be an F1 car though, teams hardly ever let people drive their cars

That's because they are extremely hard to drive. Have you seen the Richard Hammond F1 thing from Top Gear? Imagine how us folk would find it without practice and training.

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 13:27

I just want something that tells me the time not something which says to other people, hey i’m classy.

But you don't live in Monte Carlo.

  • Scott Woodwiss15/04/2009 at 13:28

Its almost like, meh, Formula 1, don’t care about that, lets chuck it over in that useless posistion no one cares about.

I mean you don’t need a fancy watch, you just need one to tell you the damn time

Is it me or should 1st and 3rd prize be the other way around? Makes much more sense. I mean, how can a fancy watch be more prestigious and vaulable than driving an F1 car?! Ludicrous!

  • RG15/04/2009 at 13:28

But you don’t live in Monte Carlo.

    I'll give you that

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 13:34

Is it me or should 1st and 3rd prize be the other way around? Makes much more sense. I mean, how can a fancy watch be more prestigious and vaulable than driving an F1 car?! Ludicrous!

If it is an F1 car, I'd definitely agree with you. :)

i dont and i kinda wanna keep it that way, would spoil the illusion, in the same way that if i meet him im gonna wear a blind fold lol

I already know what Mr C looks like after that scandal with the Flickr pics of the karting at Autosport. But I'm undecided on the name. It's kinda like when I never used to get up for the early morning GPs. I'd promise myself not to look on Autosport.com or the news to find out what happened, but I always gave in and looked anyway. :P

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 14:27

I see your point there. It does take away from the mystery of it all.

Question - After the Algarve's performance at the weekend in the A1GP, how likely will it get onto the Formula 1 calendar for either 2010 or 2011.

Do you think Tonio Liuzzi going into A1GP is a major step down for him from F1, or will it help him?

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 15:06

Do we think Martin will have to step down if the FIA can prove he knew the team were lying?

  • RG15/04/2009 at 15:16

Timo. Without being biased, that kid has got some excellent pace on him and can drive, its gotta be Timo.

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 15:17

Do we expect Malaysia to become a night race next year, and if so, would having a second night race ruin the spectacle of Singapore?

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:17

Timo. Without being biased, that kid has got some excellent pace on him and can drive, its gotta be Timo.

I say Jarno - he's got the experience to do it - and he starts higher up the grid; that must help.

They're done broadcasting, though, so this is just for us. ;)

Malaysia will probably be a night race, but Singapore will still fly high - I think Malaysia as a night race will flop spectacularly.

  • RG15/04/2009 at 15:19

I say Jarno - he’s got the experience to do it - and he starts higher up the grid; that must help.

It's currently 1-1 this season for Qualifying terms.

If it’s a night race, I won’t go. If it is a day race, I will go. But I probably don’t represent the majority :D

Eh? Why? I'd do it if it were the other way round - at least a night race would be something different - and it's a lot cooler too.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:19

It’s currently 1-1 this season for Qualifying terms.

But Jarno beat him last year, right?

  • Amy15/04/2009 at 15:20

Malaysia will probably be a night race, but Singapore will still fly high - I think Malaysia as a night race will flop spectacularly.

Me too, which is why I'd save my money :D Singapore worked because its the middle of the city, I don't think it would be anywhere near the same at an actual track thats a bit isolated.

  • Amy15/04/2009 at 15:20

Eh? Why? I’d do it if it were the other way round - at least a night race would be something different - and it’s a lot cooler too.

But I've already done the night race thing!

  • RG15/04/2009 at 15:20

Malaysia will probably be a night race, but Singapore will still fly high - I think Malaysia as a night race will flop spectacularly.

This year will show Singapore lose its novelty factor, we've loved the night time, but I reckon this year we'll not take into note of it.

Me too, which is why I’d save my money Singapore worked because its the middle of the city, I don’t think it would be anywhere near the same at an actual track thats a bit isolated.

Qatar in the Moto GP. And just look at what happend there.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:21

But I’ve already done the night race thing!

    Not at Sepang, you haven't!

And the heat - it's just something else - and I'm saying that as someone who lives in a tropical country.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:21

This year will show Singapore lose its novelty factor, we’ve loved the night time, but I reckon this year we’ll not take into note of it.

Nah, I think we'd still notice it. The media will take notice of it, that's for sure.

  • Amy15/04/2009 at 15:22

And the heat - it’s just something else - and I’m saying that as someone who lives in a tropical country.

True. I think I'm also looking at it from the viewpoint of its a strange country, and I'd be by myself, and at night that seems like way more to handle. Singapore it was OK because I was staying about 2 minutes away from the track.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 15:23

Alex, can you thank everyone there from all of us :) really appreciate it

  • RG15/04/2009 at 15:23

    They seem to love it.

Here's the thing, if the timing of the event is kept the same (as in March-April), then it still pours down in the night, event cancelled, rearranged for another time which doesn't help the fans at all.

Lets be honest, Bernie can't afford to lose the fans, and he knows it.

  • RG15/04/2009 at 15:23

I think you'll manage - there's lots of other tourists there, and most places are well-lit. In particular, if you avail the KLIA Transit package, you won't have any problems from Sepang until KL Sentral train station.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:25

Who am I kidding, if it's an F1 race I'll be there. Once I make my mind up it pretty much sticks. Singapore did that to me, and I have learned not to try and fight the urge because otherwise you end up going anyway, but all the good seats are sold out :D

  • Rich15/04/2009 at 15:36

Will Toyota win a race at last? And if yes, who will take the first win?

    It’s gotta be Glock!

It is going to be Timo for sure. He is going to be the revealtion of 2009. Toyota wil get a GP victory this year.

I am so happy the diffusers have been cleared. If BMW Sauber and Renault have them ready for China it shows they were hypocritical. Ferrari have admitted they will not have them for a little while. Were Ferrari so sure the FIA would rule in their favour?

Hypocritical might be unfair, I think its shows they had a plan B. They knew it could go either way, so i'd rather have the double diffuser rather than not if it was accepted (which it was)

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:38

Nah, they're just plain struggling right now. Too many things going on for them to be able to focus on the diffuser. The reshuffle wouldn't have helped them, either.

It is going to be Timo for sure. He is going to be the revealtion of 2009. Toyota will get a GP victory this year.

I think Timo is a tad overrated right now - he has been a bit luckier than the average driver. That said, he's done the most with what he got. Timo may be the long-term bet, but it's Trulli that will get them win number 1.

  • Jon Waldock15/04/2009 at 15:40

Hypocritical might be unfair, I think its shows they had a plan B. They knew it could go either way, so i’d rather have the double diffuser rather than not if it was accepted (which it was)

If they do have them, then they really shouldn't have kept saying "this will cost us money" when its quite clear that they knew it'd be found legal, and so "this has cost up money"

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:41

If they do have them, then they really shouldn’t have kept saying “this will cost us money” when its quite clear that they knew it’d be found legal, and so “this has cost up money”

Agreed - but let's remember that one other reason they appealed is so that they have something to show to the big bosses when they're asked why they didn't have them from the start.

  • Rich15/04/2009 at 15:42

Yeah but they havent scored any points yet, so i’m not sure they’ve got alot to loose. Plus if all the teams around them go faster and they don’t because they don;t use one of these diffusers then they’ll be even worse off

Do I sense desperation in the Ferrari camp? What happens if they do not score all season... he he he (course I am sorry for the drivers!).

  • RG15/04/2009 at 15:42

Agreed - but let’s remember that one other reason they appealed is so that they have something to show to the big bosses when they’re asked why they didn’t have them from the start.

Makes sense. Toro Rosso didn't need to appeal cos Red Bull did and Force India didn't cos its an independant team, save em a bit of money

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:43

Do I sense desperation in the Ferrari camp? What happens if they do not score all season… he he he (course I am sorry for the drivers!).

Domenicali will be out the door - and we'll be back to how Ferrari was before the days of Todt - bedlam and chaos.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 15:45

I think they did believe it was illegal, but they knew that Brawn's explanation was water-tight.

  • Scott Woodwiss15/04/2009 at 15:45

Hypocritical might be unfair, I think its shows they had a plan B. They knew it could go either way, so i’d rather have the double diffuser rather than not if it was accepted (which it was)

I disagree. It is hypocritical. Basically they said "Oh look, they have double decker diffusers. We didn't think of that, so it must be illegal. But if it isn't, then we're going to put one on our cars just because we can" They criticise a certain part of the car and then go and copy it just because it's now been officially ruled legal in the Court of Appeal. Ridiculous. But that's the way it's always been in F1. If one car has something which makes it go faster, then everyone else in theory is obliged to copy the design and interpret it in their own way. Always has been, always will be.

Red Bull's shark fin was never this controversial and look what happened. By the end of the season, every team had tried a version of it on their car at some stage during the season. I can guarentee that this will be the case with these diffusers this season. By Abu Dhabi, probably every team will be running one.

In my view this whole thing has been an utter farce and a complete waste of time.

They had to complain to give themselves an excuse. Sorry I am so happy that Ferrari are really are struggling given the unpleasantness they gave Ross at the meeting. I really hope they do get a single victory this season - that will make it for me.

I want Stefano to stay in - he's a moderate compared to Luca, and who knows what Luca has in mind if Ferrari suffer this year. And for him to stay in, they need to win at least some races.

I may want Brawn to win the title, but I'm still a Ferrari fan - they need to do some winning, or else Luca may induce some long-term pain.

I think only Ferrari genuinely believed them (sob sob sob) to be illegal which is why they are the most behind in its development. Sure but I think you will see Renault and BMW with diffusers either this week or the next race after China. Red Bull is competitive even without. I think I read Macca have a diffuser ready (hence why they did not protest). Ferrari are going to really struggle with a (hopefully) uncompetitive car and clowns for their management.

Why wish Ferrari ill will? It's a bit unfair to those unnamed people working at the factory. Of everyone there, only LDM is truly suspect.

I would have been more considerate to them had they not got so personal with Brawn during the hearing. At least they [Ferrari] are not as hypocritical as the other teams (well at least two of them). I do feel slightly sorry for Red Bull, being a smaller team and probably having the most work to get a diffuser in place. BMW Sauber, were being the especially painfull on the issue.

Red Bull also has its rear suspension to deal with - they'll have to redesign that as well to get the trick diffuser on properly.

Not sure what you mean about BMW Sauber.

See #767 - I just would like to see teams like Williams, Toyota, Red Bull, STR, Force India get some victories this season. One reason is to ensure the sport remains viable. Macca and Ferrari have had it to much their own way recently so if they do not win this year it will be healthy for the sport since we will not lose a team and it will encourage new competitors.

Obviously I am a Brawn supporter so they and either Rubens or Janson for the championship. But if the champion were from the other teams (including BMW Sauber) it will still be OK. I do not like any team to monopolise the championship year after year.

Yeah, I understand that. But I'd rather wish for a team or a number of teams to do well than for a team not to do well, I guess.

  • Rich15/04/2009 at 16:22

Not sure what you mean about BMW Sauber.

I lost respect for the Doctor when he kept claiming costs and levelling the playing field etc. Until relatively recently they were my favourite team. I do not like this posturing with words - it is that word beginning with B. Everyone is convinced they already have a diffuser available so they now get to see thier investment work for them and they can keep their long faces away from the track.

  • Rich15/04/2009 at 16:31

Yeah, I understand that. But I’d rather wish for a team or a number of teams to do well than for a team not to do well, I guess.

Yes but they won last year and this year they need to improve themselves, especially their management. I think McLaren are really guilty in the spy-gate (convince Martin Whitmarsh knew more than he has admitted). I still feel sorry for the 900-odd workers at woking where they to get a heft punishment. If you do not punish F1 will get truely unruely and more dishonest. It is about ensuring balance and more opportunity, even if you do not have the largest purses.

I actually quite like Felipe, his team has cost him some serious point (possibly even more than Kimi) but he has not compalined too publically

Michael feels the same way, actually. Of all his teammates, he was only good friends with Felipe and Jos Verstappen.

I do pity Massa, though - I remember Germany 2002, where Peter Sauber ordered Felipe to let Nick by, so that Nick can challenge Panis. But when Panis retired before Nick could even get to him, he got to keep the place - and the 1 point that went with it.

I know you're only saying "if", but Ferrari will win races this year. They will have come back strongly, certainly by mid-way through the season. McLaren I would be less optimistic about.

Hmmm... I'm not sure, Joe. It might end up being the other way round, given Ferrari's reshuffle. It's just a matter of who is more resilient.

But if you were to ask me, Brawn will win around 9 races. Toyota will take 4 races, BMW 3, Williams 1, Ferrari or McLaren 1.

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 17:40

But if you were to ask me, Brawn will win around 9 races. Toyota will take 4 races, BMW 3, Williams 1, Ferrari or McLaren 1.

But if I do an Amy and suddenly wake up, count me in. :D

  • Joe15/04/2009 at 17:43

I like the sound of that, but I don't think Brawn will be that dominant as the season progresses. Seeing as you gave numbers, I'll say:

    Brawn - 5

    Toyota - 5

    BMW - 3

    Ferrari - 3

    Williams - 1

  • Bootneck15/04/2009 at 17:43

I tend to agree Joe, though I think Macca obviously have the wallet to buy their way out of the hole they're as well as Ferrari. But what I'm really waiting for is Nico's 1st win, I think as a team Williams have to strive to give him that or we'll lose him, and that would be a shame coz I think he's the best driver we've had for years.

  • Steven Roy15/04/2009 at 17:44

  • Journeyer15/04/2009 at 17:46

I like the sound of that, but I don’t think Brawn will be that dominant as the season progresses. Seeing as you gave numbers, I’ll say:

But if - and given, this IS a big if, Brawn slam dunk China and Bahrain, that gives them 4 right off the bat. I don't think they'd just win 1 more race between Spain and Abu Dhabi. Which is why I'm leaning on 9 wins.

    So that's

    Brawn - 8 (I'll adjust it a bit - 9 is a tad much)

    BMW - 3

    Toyota - 3

    Williams - 2

    Ferrari - 1

    McLaren - 1

It would be great to see Williams winning again. I note that neither of us has Red Bull down. They have strong pace even without the diffuser, but the diffuser 3 have rendered some of that pace a bit useless.

Now that teams are out of the way, let's do drivers:

    Jenson - 4

    Glock - 3

    Kubica - 3

    Trulli - 2

    Raikkonen - 2

    Massa - 1

    Rubens - 1

    Rosberg - 1

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 21:32

Really was lovely to be able to meet loads of people that I've been chatting to on here. Funny thing is, it was sooo hot at the museum .. the complete opposite of when we are at the karting, then we froze

Maybe we need some F1 news - http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74482

McLaren Group chairman Ron Dennis is to make an announcement about his future plans within the company tomorrow, AUTOSPORT has learned, amid suggestions he could step back completely from his involvement with the Formula 1 team.

Is this Ron trying to get as far away as possible before the WMSC hearing?

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 21:44

YOU HAD HOME MADE COOKIES? I really hate you guys now ;)

    Yummy :D :D .. and cupcakes!

I'm still buzzing from today despite the train journey home :D amazingly I said to lou earlier how it's lovely to have sunshine because wales never seems to get it, and i come back into wales to be greeted with lots of rain. Sods law really :P

  • RG15/04/2009 at 21:53

    Sods law really

At least you had seen some sun today, I haven't even seen any clouds. And now the fog is gone, it has been replaced by rain.

  • Andy Taylor15/04/2009 at 21:53

We used to take our holidays in Wales when I was a child and it almost always rained. Except one year, when there was fantastic weather.

  • Andy Taylor15/04/2009 at 21:53

At least you had seen some sun today, I haven’t even seen any clouds. And now the fog is gone, it has been replaced by rain.

    Aww. Poor RG.

I thought the Malaysian monsoon had found its way to Warwick this morning, there was lightening and so much rain that the windscreen wipers on full pelt couldn't cope. It only lasted for about 15 miles thankfully

  • RG15/04/2009 at 21:55

I thought the Malaysian monsoon had found its way to Warwick this morning, there was lightening and so much rain that the windscreen wipers on full pelt couldn’t cope. It only lasted for about 15 miles thankfully

Nasty. You got out okay at least

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 21:59

So apart from the diffuser issue, has there been any F1 news today?

  • Andy Taylor15/04/2009 at 22:00

So apart from the diffuser issue, has there been any F1 news today?

    Ron's pre announcement.

  • RG15/04/2009 at 22:00

So apart from the diffuser issue, has there been any F1 news today?

Erm, apart from that Klien story, no

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/1239793255177

I suggest you check that out though

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 22:02

    Ron’s pre announcement.

I read somewhere the other day (sorry dont remember where) that McLaren may face less of a penalty if Ron is seen to step aside totally. Don't know if that was just speculation or had some basis in fact

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 22:02

So apart from the diffuser issue, has there been any F1 news today?

The Ron thing aside, it's all been about how the teams are getting on building their new diffusers.

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 22:03
  • RG15/04/2009 at 22:03

http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/1239793255177 Cool, where’d that come from?

No idea, Dom linked to it earlier on

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 22:04

I read somewhere the other day (sorry dont remember where) that McLaren may face less of a penalty if Ron is seen to step aside totally. Don’t know if that was just speculation or had some basis in fact

Something to do with the Max-Ron rivalry perhaps?

Max tells Ron McLaren will suffer less if he disappears?

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 22:04

The Ron thing aside, it’s all been about how the teams are getting on building their new diffusers.

I'd bet they are already well on the case just in case the appeal said they were within the rules

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 22:05

Max tells Ron McLaren will suffer less if he disappears?

I wouldn't be at all surprised

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 22:07

I’d bet they are already well on the case just in case the appeal said they were within the rules

Looks like Renault have one ready, Ferrari and Red Bull will wait until Spain and McLaren are keeping quiet. Not sure about BMW.

  • Jackie15/04/2009 at 22:09

Has there been any word about a RENAULT private test today? .. seemed odd to see that transporter I posted on drop.io out on the road this morning

  • Flibster15/04/2009 at 22:24

    Woohoo!

Managed to get a seat on the train!

Great to see everyone today. What a top day it was too.

  • Alex Andronov15/04/2009 at 22:35

I missed that that, do tell

So I had ordered this fish and chip and the bar maid brought it to me... And when she put it on the table it wasn't - shall we say - fully on the table... and so when I put my knife down a leverage force met a moveable object and the fish and chips went first on my legs, then on Flibster's bag and jeans and then on the floor - ah happy memories ;)

  • Alex Andronov15/04/2009 at 22:36

But I did order mushy peas so I should get points from RG for that!

  • littlepurplegoth15/04/2009 at 23:26

    carbon fiber stairs…

Although I can see a case to be made for a carbon fibre table - problem is I remember seeing that one when it 'came out' and being scared by the price tag! So gord only knows what the stairs would actually cost - probably more than something almost as thin and umpteen times as lovely in glass and steel..... (with change left over for something wheeled and electric?)

  • Dom15/04/2009 at 23:26

    It’s Chris’s fault

As pilots of Sidepodcast Airways, both Lou and myself can provide the Loran-C navigational co-ordinates to Sidepodcast GHQ for a hefty price.

Apparently, the huge Testa coils that me uses to providethe needed electricity have been deem a hazard to air traffic flying into both Heathrow and Gatwick....That's how we know.

    pmsl

  • Flibster15/04/2009 at 23:46

Yup. The 4 food groups are:

    Chocolate

    Caffeine

    MEAT!

    Alcohol

However - alcohol can be replacd with more chocolate. ;)

As everyone can see, I have yet to teach Lou to properly punch in the said co-ordinates on the Autopilot's Loran-C nav system as she still needs more hours flying manually....

Yup. The 4 food groups are:

    Chocolate

    Caffeine

    MEAT!

    Alcohol

However - alcohol can be replacd with more chocolate.

8 of them had just been made redundant, so the others had taken them to London for the day, when they got off the train at 11.40pm they where on their way to a restaurant to a late curry so the goodie bag wasn't needed, they had good taste in chocolates. Hope the 8 find new jobs soon.

Yup. Bear. Ever wonder what happens to the to the rest of the poor creature whose bear's-skin ends up as a hat for the Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace? You can get it at an island called St. Pierre.

    I already know what Mr C looks like after that scandal with the Flickr pics of the karting at Autosport. {Comment #588}

I saw his face and name at the karting, but I'm rubbish at remembering faces (I'd struggle to remember Christine's, and her head is not only fairly distinctive due to her hairstyle but because I see it quite a lot on the internet) and I've deliberately avoided memorising the latter.

  • littlepurplegoth16/04/2009 at 00:35

No, Scotch would ruin the taste of the Bear. That's like using the wrong type of wine for the meat you are eating!.

tried Alligator meat? It tastes like Chicken (Assumes whatever tastes the seasoning has - recommend Cajin sauce for it.)

There are 2 bits. One is very short, the other longer than the 4 minutes it says it is.

I make my own bacon already. Have also had whole sides of lamb delivered and can lob them into joints and chops hapilly.

Given half a chance I'd hunt for my meat regularly. Did pheasent a while ago. Lovely in a stew as long as you spit the shot out.

No, Scotch would ruin the taste of the Bear. That’s like using the wrong type of ine for the meat you are eating!.

tried Alligator meat? It tastes like Chicken (Assumes whatever tastes the seasoning has - recommend Cajin sauce for it.)

No point in either drink for me. Stone cold sober... just highly caffinated. :D

Alligator is lovely. Had some 3 weeks ago for the Australian GP. Just did it quickly on the griddle pan. I find it slightly fishy in taste with a steak like texture.

  • Journeyer16/04/2009 at 00:43

@ Journeyer - so I was right, right ? :-) it was doctorvee who alerted FIA :-)

    Let's hope so - but I don't think we'll ever know for sure. ;)

on the other hand, that isn’t that far away for me to go, hm …

    Aw, you're kidding! :O

Now I'm divided - Korea, Shanghai, or Beijing? Hmmm... :-/

  • F1Wolf16/04/2009 at 04:30

Now I’m divided - Korea, Shanghai, or Beijing? Hmmm… :-/

Shanghai I think I had enough, but anyway, that is this weekend and Korea is next year. Beijing is in November. Oh, wait, November, Beijing, that may be too cold for my taste :-)

  • Alex Andronov16/04/2009 at 04:32

G’night folks, nice to put some faces to names

    Yeah it was ace :)

Just about to head out to work :(

  • Scott Woodwiss16/04/2009 at 07:52

BAT - Started 6th, had an awful start and dropped to 19th, had a brilliant end to my first stint, great first stop, nice steady 2nd stint, good second stop and then managed to nail Selidor in the final laps to end up 5th. :D

  • Journeyer16/04/2009 at 08:03

Shanghai I think I had enough, but anyway, that is this weekend and Korea is next year. Beijing is in November. Oh, wait, November, Beijing, that may be too cold for my taste

It would be worth it if I saw Schumi, Johnson, Loeb, probably Button, and maybe Hamilton, all under 1 roof. :D

    I'm thinking Beijing 2009, Shanghai 2010, or Korea 2010. ;)

  • F1Wolf16/04/2009 at 08:08

    I’m thinking Beijing 2009, Shanghai 2010, or Korea 2010.

Korea will depend on the calendar, but if possiblem I would probably go, finally a reason for me to visit that country :-)

Beijing may be fun, but I somehow see that large stadium filled with empty seats and all the bored uninterested rude faces of organizers that keep me from returning to Shanghai for F1 ...

  • chris evans16/04/2009 at 08:19

G’night folks, nice to put some faces to names

Yeah, had an ace but tiring day! Was great to meet you all properly. Looking forward to the next sidepodpicnic already!

  • Journeyer16/04/2009 at 08:23

Korea will depend on the calendar, but if possiblem I would probably go, finally a reason for me to visit that country

Same here - it will probably be a family trip, so I'm hoping it will be in the early part of the season. But the current speculation is that China will stay in April for 2010, with Korea taking its spot in the back-to-back with Japan by late October.

Beijing may be fun, but I somehow see that large stadium filled with empty seats and all the bored uninterested rude faces of organizers that keep me from returning to Shanghai for F1 …

I think the organizers will still be the guys who ran the show at Wembley, not the folks from Shanghai. That said, I don't think that many people in China are interested in WRC or NASCAR.

    Morning Folks

    Just finished this

Great article mate, some good stuff in there

  • Bassano Clapper16/04/2009 at 23:11

Didn’t go shopping for Apple (or other tech related) products during that time did you?

The Apple store wasn't around then

I've only 'gone Mac' in the last 18 months

There is nothing better than someone giving out good advice when it is too late.

  • Steven Roy17/04/2009 at 01:21

Just out of curiosity is that an Apollo capsule in dropio?

  • Pat W17/04/2009 at 01:21

There is nothing better than someone giving out good advice when it is too late.

    I'm really good at that.

But if he'd said it earlier...

  • Lukeh17/04/2009 at 01:22

Just out of curiosity is that an Apollo capsule in dropio?

it is, or ' some kind of doctor who thingy' as I technicallt refer to as it

  • Pat W17/04/2009 at 01:23

Just out of curiosity is that an Apollo capsule in dropio?

I believe it is Apollo 10. Not sure if it was the real one.

  • Lukeh17/04/2009 at 01:23

other technical terms that came out in the space area of the museum were 'tin foil cylinder thing', 'flying foil machine' and 'the insides of a dalek' for a rocket engine

  • Steven Roy17/04/2009 at 01:23

    I’m really good at that.

But if he’d said it earlier…

I do it all the time too.

  • Steven Roy17/04/2009 at 01:24

I believe it is Apollo 10. Not sure if it was the real one.

It looks like one that has been through re-entry. Ten is unimportant enough for the Americans to let it out of the country.

  • chris evans17/04/2009 at 01:25

Just out of curiosity is that an Apollo capsule in dropio?

I wondered when you'd notice all the space stuff ;)

I believe it was an Apollo capsule. There was tonnes of stuff in the space section but far too many people around to see it all properly or take decent photos unfortunately.

  • chris evans17/04/2009 at 01:25

I was, I had a god look at the bottom and the heat shield was well and truly charred.

I believe it is Apollo 10. Not sure if it was the real one.

    Correct. Called Charlie Brown.

  • Steven Roy17/04/2009 at 01:28

Just had a quick look on the NASA site and tomorrow the shuttle Endeavour will be rolled out. This will be the last time ever that two shuttles will be on the pad together. Must make a point of watching NASA TV tomorrow to see the historic event.

  • Pat W17/04/2009 at 01:29

People are going to start calculating where sidepodcast towers is if you keep giving info like that out.

He may have accidentally and drunkenly told me after I told him my calculations based on evidence picked up here and there.... I wasn't expecting to be told, just a 'warm' or 'cold' at most. Hopefully he was quiet enough that I was the only one to hear... he very quickly after that told me where he came from, so the places should hopefully get confused in any earwiggers minds..

  • Steven Roy17/04/2009 at 01:31

Mission details for Apollo ten. http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/history/apollo/apollo10/index.html

The commander Gene Cernan commanded Apollo 17 which was the last one to go to the moon. I think he was the last man to stand on the moon. His number two John Young commanded Apollo 16

can you put a little reminder in the comments tomorrow?

  • Pat W17/04/2009 at 01:35

Sorry I didn’t speak much, not very good at meeting new people, but every one how was there was really ACE and nice to talk, or in my case, listen to.

You may have noticed I'm the same. Even with Gavin who I've been typing at for years.

  • Steven Roy17/04/2009 at 01:36

can you put a little reminder in the comments tomorrow?

I have put it in my calendar so I should remember. The first one is not due to launch until May 12th

  • chris evans17/04/2009 at 01:43

Just looking back through the comments and came across this

ahah! Now i remember why the security guard amused me more than he should have… he looked like Dr Alan Statham off Green Wing… now it all makes sense.

Which is very odd, as on the way to the Science Museum, I walked past the actor that plays Boyce!
