It's not long now until the Sidepodscience meetup gets underway in London. However, before we get there, we've got a few news stories to discuss first:
- BMW have confirmed that they're designing a super light-weight car for Kubica, hopefully in time for the Spanish Grand Prix. The weight factor has meant Kub can't run KERS, but the team are banking on some weight-saving techniques to sort it out. If there are such savings to be made, though, why haven't they done them before? And does this prove that KERS really is worth having?
- Surprise, surprise, the organisers at Sepang have become less resistant to the idea of a night race. Given what happened last weekend, and the fact that Bernie always gets his way, this is hardly a completely radical step. However, will they be able to compete with the Singapore spectacle?
- Ferrari are undergoing a major reshuffle to try and spice up their championship campaign. Luca Baldisserri is being given a factory-based role, whilst Chris Dyer takes over his duties trackside. Presumably this is a step down for Luca, regardless of how Ferrari try to portray it as a sideways move. It also turns out that Marc Gene undertook some straightline testing to evaluate a new front wing that will appear in China. Does this testing count under the FIA's restricted straightline days? Why don't we get to hear about it in a more public fashion?
That'll do it for now. It's always good to return from holiday and be cast straight back into the thick of some F1 news. It should keep us going for a while, and as usual, I'll see you in the comments.

Sounds great - good luck with it! In that role you'll get to know pretty much everything you need to know about office life. Plus medical schools like to see that sort of work experience on their application forms.
My Year 10 work experience (I've done two other stints since, plus half a day I don't really count for complicated reasons) was at the local library. I got shuttled round every department for two weeks and did a bit of everything except for making the tea and guillotining. Proved to be very good experience for later on.

There's a height requirement - so BMW's Kubica isn't it.
This happened at last year's French GP - we can eliminate Brawn.
Driver being paid 30% less but is faster - goodbye, Renault and McLaren.

I'm not entirely sure he's referring to last year's French Grand Prix specifically. If he isn't, then I have a sneaky feeling it might be Williams in the R. Schumacher/Montoya era, but I can't be sure. There are a few other pairings to which parts of this could apply.
Also note that some of the criteria have clearly been changed - I can't imagine any team demanding their drivers wear Thomas the Tank Engine pyjamas, especially since it doesn't sponsor any team!
its when the stupid rumour storys start coming up on various websites you have to be careful. When the spy-gate thing came around, on PlanetF1 it said Mclaren had been banned from racing for 2 years, lewis was too, i nearly cried. So just be careful :)

It might have done (Force India meeting many of the criteria listed) but for three things:
1) As pointed out, Force India's management structure is not exactly unwieldly
2) Sutil may well still be on his original contract with the team (certainly I've not heard of him need to formally re-negotiate it at any point), in which case he isn't on a wage
3) Fisi got a pay rise at the end of the year from an estimated €400,000 to $1.5m. If there was a pay parity issue, then logically it would be the driver getting paid less that would be getting the increase, not the one paid more.

Renault are apparently claiming that the FIA already ruled that the diffuser was illegal in a previous judgement which is when they stopped developing their own version.

Why haven't we heard about it then? Is this what Red Bull were referring to? Is so, that was just an opinion, not a judgment. That's a world of difference.
It looks like it all comes down to sour grapes so far.
Interesting, too, the speculation at RealBrawnGP.com. They think that the trick diffuser is bait for the Ferrari and McLaren engineers. According to them, it's a different part of the car that's giving them a bigger advantage.

That's right. It doesn't seem like Williams, Toyota, or Brawn have heard of this judgment as well, which would be very odd, honestly.

Although I still think it's in Bernie's hands rather than 'the teams' as he puts it. He'll still get some silly excuse or financial way to stop Montreal coming back probably.

He gets the teams to agree with say, an 18 race calendar, so he puts Canda in for 2 years, then it gets removed in favour of an Indian race (for sake of argument) then the teams get angry, so they make it an 19 race calendar....etc etc etc

This reminds me of a really stupid stupid thing BBC have just done. They made an advert for BBC Radio with all the presenters and Muse, as well as getting Muse fans to travel into the studios they were film it, did it all, everything edited and setup for the ad, then announced this week it was being binned as 'the advert was too extragavant in a time of economic worry'. Their statement as well was going on about how 'the worry of offending viewers who may be struggling with the current status of the economy is an factor in the decision'.
So.. you paid for it all, edited it all, got it all sorted, then decide 'nah' because it looks too expensive? Despite paying for it already? Silly, silly people...

Schumacher's wife went to a load of races and she didn't sing. Assorted DC partners were always on TV and none of them sang. She may be doing it for the publicity but she is not the first partner of a racing driver to get a lot of coverage.
Watch any film from the late 60s and you can bet Helen Stewart, Bette Hill and Nina Rindt are on screen every ten minutes during the race.

Montreal is that great a track. It only became great when it was dropped from the calendar. Before that the surface was rubbish and its safety was dubious. Too much exposed concrete like the wall Kubica hit and no real way to sort it. There is not a decent corner i the whole place.
It is however unique and has some history attached to iit and always pulls a crowd.

I loved Canada before it was dropped, sure the surface ain't great, but thats the point of a street circuit, again sure there are exposed walls and it can be adressed better and i think thats the major flaw of it.
But I love the track, its not a circuit-circuit, but not a street track, a good mix and I love it for it. More often than not produces a good race, I love it.
My biggest problem about tomorrow is that I'm not sure what to do about iPhone battery life. Live commenting does tend to drain those batteries! Silly no replaceable battery design! Normally I don't mind but today cuh!

It is generally fine until you start using the 3G to upload pictures. I might have wifi there though I guess.

Have both 3g and wifi as well - try to avoid wifi as it's a killer.
3g isn't too bad, but I do have one of the first proper 3g handsets so it's a little slower than the modern ones.

Evening all. All this talk of meetings is a bit depressing as I won't be there to join in the fun.
Re. iPhone battery life - there are several things you can do to maximise your battery life:
Turn off stuff you're not using - location services, Wi-Fi, 3G, even the phone radio itself (airplane mode).
Turn off push notification and set checking of mail to manual.
Turn down the brightness - this makes a massive difference. Also, set the auto lock to the minimum possible time of 1 minute.
Remove unwanted/unused applications. Switch your phone off and back on again (full power off/on) on a semi-regular basis, i.e. at least twice a week.
Finally, if your battery life is still poor, try a full restore of the phone. This can have an effect too.

Well I'm hoping to arrive at about 12:15 - 12:30 and then hang around until someone else decides what happens.
Me, lou and Lukeh should all be getting there at just before 12 I think.
I'm arriving in waterloo at about 11:15, then making my way over (stoping for lunch on the way, so I'll be there from about 11:45 onwards really.
I was going to rush straight from Waterloo but actually there isn't any hurry so I'll probably stop at Waterloo for some food unless other plans are afoot.
I might even get a later train.
I think I'll get there for about 12'ish
i think i'll be there around 12, but finding the actual meeting place within the museum should be interesting, cause i don't think i'll be coming in the main entrance. I'll probably be coming in the entance in the underground passage from the underground...
Ah well if I get lost I'll just look around the exhibit after 1pm looking for a big crown of folks

The way I did it last summer was to follow the tunnel from the underground, and it emerged in the street close to the main entrance. I'm not sure if there is a more direct route, I might have missed it.

depends what you're doing, if you're on your D of E and in a rush to get to the camp destination (our physics teacher's house) while there is a storm and it's rainging and you are the one with the metal tent poles, and all the metal pots and pans in your back pacl it's not so fun ;) otherwise it's fine :D

I like pretty much everything both artists have done so far, so I wasn't surprised that I liked it. Especially since I also like the Celine Dion version of the song. Such a difficult one to sing well, yet so many different ways of singing it in ways that bring out different facets of emotion in the song. Jim Steinman is a very gifted songwriter.

Methinks we'll be seeing more of Jake in the future. He's good at what he does, so even if, heaven forbid, F1 changed channels again, Jake would probably go along with the switch.
Martin always misses the Hungarian GP though.

Same here. I've been present for some but not contributed much during them.
Partly due to the crazy timezones, partly due to typing other stuff at the time.
I find it hard to concentrate on a race and live comment, so I tend to leave comments when not much is happening. Or when Jenson wins a race...
Until I jump into the netbook arena or get a dead laptop (windows, bleurgh)
I prefer to watch on the telly and the iMac is not in the same room :(
