It's not long now until the Sidepodscience meetup gets underway in London. However, before we get there, we've got a few news stories to discuss first:

  • BMW have confirmed that they're designing a super light-weight car for Kubica, hopefully in time for the Spanish Grand Prix. The weight factor has meant Kub can't run KERS, but the team are banking on some weight-saving techniques to sort it out. If there are such savings to be made, though, why haven't they done them before? And does this prove that KERS really is worth having?
  • Surprise, surprise, the organisers at Sepang have become less resistant to the idea of a night race. Given what happened last weekend, and the fact that Bernie always gets his way, this is hardly a completely radical step. However, will they be able to compete with the Singapore spectacle?
  • Ferrari are undergoing a major reshuffle to try and spice up their championship campaign. Luca Baldisserri is being given a factory-based role, whilst Chris Dyer takes over his duties trackside. Presumably this is a step down for Luca, regardless of how Ferrari try to portray it as a sideways move. It also turns out that Marc Gene undertook some straightline testing to evaluate a new front wing that will appear in China. Does this testing count under the FIA's restricted straightline days? Why don't we get to hear about it in a more public fashion?

That'll do it for now. It's always good to return from holiday and be cast straight back into the thick of some F1 news. It should keep us going for a while, and as usual, I'll see you in the comments.

Does this testing count under the FIA’s restricted straightline days?

    almost certainly.

Why don’t we get to hear about it in a more public fashion?

that would be way to easy. plus it wouldn't be formula 1.

Second! Who will be third? Stop living in the past people!

  • lou13/04/2009 at 23:10

    Yeh!

I've seen it working, I've used it when DP has gone away (so I can play on the macbookpro) but this computer doesn't like it... probably because a) I'm generally using IE (and apparently that isn't a 'proper' browser, lol, I quite agree but am basically laxy lol) and b) even if I run firefox on this diddy thing it doesn't like it very much and I'm, oh, basically laxy roflrofl

and I'm used to lots of windows/tabs these days :-)

I'm comment trawling. I'm only on Saturday. Could be a long night.

I just add Steven's Star Wars comment to the Wiki because I'm still laughing at it!

Its alright, i mean it does the job... it loads very slowly... no media works in the browser... and its slow... hard to see some text... did i mention it was slow? Cant complain for a free addon. ;)

    Is it really that funny?

  • Joe13/04/2009 at 23:37

That Sims karting game I linked to, there's 3 or 4 cars that are bonus exclusives for DS users.......one is a Nissan Micra. Also a Lamborghini Murciélago for DS folks. What a choice!

Meh, sounds about right for Nintendo. How is the DSi? For reasons I won't go in to I'm not going to be sticking with my DS Lite for the time being.

is it strange i now have X3 tabs open for lclt and the doohickey?

  • Lukeh13/04/2009 at 23:41

Im loving the actual Dsi. Nice and loud and a lot brighter (although bye bye battery life) but it feels like a mini console with a proper menu of items and actual storage finally. Im just a sucker for new gadgets though so I thought id try it out. The cameras are pointlessly annoying fun... :p

  • Bassano Clapper13/04/2009 at 23:41

  • Bassano Clapper13/04/2009 at 23:44

    :D

well i don’t have enough space for anymore ;)

But tabs aren't limited by space, they just scroll off screen until required?

Well mine do, but I can get a bit carried away and forget what was at the beginning

37 degrees of separation and all that

  • Dan Brunell13/04/2009 at 23:45

BMW have confirmed that they’re designing a super light-weight car...

Ferrari are undergoing a major reshuffle...

Just thought of this. The fact that Kimi would even dare take an ice cream treat that would add 3 oz of body weight must have caused the team engineers to have a heart attack. How could he do that! Kimi just made the car .00000054353 of a second slower.

Really, we are going to reach the point where F1 drivers are going to make Keira Knightley look like Rosie O'Donnell. This can't be healthy.

yeah mine do, but i have to limet myself to about 10 at the most... cause really anymore than 7 as well a msn and itunes and my laptop almost over heats. lol

Scott means me when he says brawny boy due to my GRID livery being similar to Brawn :)

  • littlepurplegoth14/04/2009 at 00:03

Sorry - munch is one of those terms from newsgroup days... mingle and food (well, beer usually, lol) = munch. If it was a tlnet game thing then it was usually known as a Mudmeet... or if it was a ZZ9 thing it was known as a 'slouch'...

LPG the ubergeek wanders away unbelieving that she is the only one here who ever did these things and realising that she has been around the internet for too many years....

  • Joe14/04/2009 at 00:03

Scott's name for Luke is Brawn Boy, he may have christened him over XBL a few days ago. Scott's too good at the game tbh. :P

Becoming fed up of sucking in F3 cars, I took the F1000 around the Nurburgring for 2 laps and put down a 1:36.74 , for fun. Someone beat that.

Solar charger for the journey? Wind up pack or similar? Quick trip to Regent street to 'borrow' a dock before you head home :-0 (quite normal, apple shops apparently expect it a bit) Or justbring the charger with you and plug it in on train or where you can find a sneaky/cheeky socket (most starbucks basically)

here we go again but… what is The Waltons?

A US TV show about a multigenerational family under one roof.

Just before the end credits as the camera was panning out on a view of the house, you'd hear

    "Night Ma"

    "Night Jonboy"

    "Night Granma", etc

And the rest... alternatively you just start to manage without ever making it up.

Or you finally get flu for the first time in a decade and get all caught up then.

Or the blackdog days hit (for the first time in a similar period, not-lol :-( ), and miraculously sleep debt paid is the side effect...

    Anyway... I haven't said goodnight!!

OK, so the router is about to be turned off so I may not have a say in it.... teehee....

A US TV show about a multigenerational family under one roof. Just before the end credits as the camera was panning out on a view of the house, you’d hear

I went to my old primary school for work experience. It was pretty handy knowing most of the staff, and nice meeting the new ones.

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2009 at 01:17

Does this testing count under the FIA’s restricted straightline days?

    almost certainly. {Comment #1}

Yes. Unless there are promotional tyres on the Ferrari, in which case it's not.

  • Joe14/04/2009 at 01:18

Speaking of cricket, I think Ireland has qualified for the World Cup, wtf? I wasn't even aware we had a cricket team until a few months ago. That's like an Italian qualifying for the snooker World Championship.

Sounds great - good luck with it! In that role you'll get to know pretty much everything you need to know about office life. Plus medical schools like to see that sort of work experience on their application forms.

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2009 at 01:25

My Year 10 work experience (I've done two other stints since, plus half a day I don't really count for complicated reasons) was at the local library. I got shuttled round every department for two weeks and did a bit of everything except for making the tea and guillotining. Proved to be very good experience for later on.

  • RG14/04/2009 at 01:26

My F1 Racing has just landed in my mailbox, and I was all excited about meeting page 22.

THERE IS NO PAGE 22 IN THE AUSTRALIAN EDITION

Well, there is, but it's Murray Walker. It's not Sidepodpicture! Sidepodpicture is nowhere to be found!

Turns out they change more than just the cover! In the words of Buemi, "NOOO"

Maybe they thought it didn't really make sense anymore. As McLaren haven't really overcome their testing woes.

True, and I think the feature on Australia is probably taking up a lot more space than it would in your issue.

yes, we get the UK one here, which is good, but quite late. it shows up early at the airport shops, but I do not feel like going all the way there just to get a magazine :-)

Agreed. I don't mind it being late - even if it showed up on time, it would be behind the news anyway. Most of the good articles aren't time-specific, so it's fine. :)

Finally getting my 2001 season DVD tomorrow. w00t!

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:22

In Tony Dodgins latest article: http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2101 (behind pay wall - sorry)

He makes a very interesting case for driver rotation. But in a small section talking about driver salaries he mentions this:

Another team, with an unwieldy management structure, laid down set criteria for hiring a driver. He had to have won races, be five feet nine, with size eight feet, Thomas the Tank Engine pyjamas and three Chihuahuas. Only Driver A was available who fitted the bill and so they paid him squillions.

Driver B, was upset. He was paid maybe 30 per cent of squillions but was quicker. Someone denied they were paying Driver A quite so many squillions. So, when they all go to the French GP, have to make declarations and pay a percentage of French earnings to the taxman, Driver B's manager checks the declarations and realises that Driver A is indeed being paid squillions. So he goes ballistic at the lies and, lo and behold, the team now has to pay squillions to both A and B.

    Who's that then?

  • me14/04/2009 at 07:26

I suppose I could post you a copy from here... That would work wouldn't it?

  • Scott Woodwiss14/04/2009 at 07:31

    Morning guys :)

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:31

    Who’s that then?

Hmmm... The only teams with winning drivers are Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, Renault, Toyota, Red Bull, and Brawn.

Have won raceS - we can eliminate Toyota and Red Bull.

    There's a height requirement - so BMW's Kubica isn't it.

This happened at last year's French GP - we can eliminate Brawn.

Driver being paid 30% less but is faster - goodbye, Renault and McLaren.

    So who's left? ;)

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:32

    So who’s left? ;)

Forgot about Force India - Fisi may fit the height requirement, but Sutil isn't faster than him anyway.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:33

Have won raceS - we can eliminate Toyota and Red Bull.

I don't think it says the team have won races does it?

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:33

I don’t think it says the team have won races does it?

True, but Trulli and Vettel have only had one win apiece.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:34

And the other thing is... Sorry that first line which says, "Another team..." that follows on from a paragraph talking about Ferrrari so they are out.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:35

True, but Trulli and Vettel have only had one win apiece.

Ah I see what you're saying.

My guess is that it's Glock and Toyota.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:36

    Morning guys :)

    Morning Scott!

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:37

My guess is that it’s Glock and Toyota.

Glock is as quick as Trulli, but not quicker. Remember that Trulli scored Toyota's only podium last year, and beat Timo on points.

My original guess was that it was Massa and Ferrari, but having said that...

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:39

My original guess was that it was Massa and Ferrari, but having said that…

... it may be Sutil and Force India, after all. It's the one that best fits the bill.

No way... They aren't paying squillians to anyone... "with an unwieldy management structure"... I say it must be Toyota even if Glock wasn't faster in points terms he was the better driver.

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:43

No way… They aren’t paying squillians to anyone… “with an unwieldy management structure”… I say it must be Toyota even if Glock wasn’t faster in points terms he was the better driver.

    What's Trulli's height? :D

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:48

Paying squllians to get a very specific driver would certainly explain Ralf's contract!

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:48

Paying squllians to get a very specific driver would certainly explain Ralf’s contract!

But he's not around anymore. ;)

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 07:49

But he’s not around anymore. ;)

Yes but if they had that set up for him then that followed on to Trulli.

I think that sounds right to me.

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 07:50

Yes but if they had that set up for him then that followed on to Trulli.

Hmmm... Yeah, makes sense. But wouldn't Trulli's contract be much smaller compared to Ralf's?

Anyone got any exciting plans for today? Or boring plans for that matter?

I'm going to watch what I suspect is going to be a useless film but still going cos its a friends birthday

    Like Heidfeld?

First that look-alike on drop.io, now that. Is there anything wrong with that beard?

  • lou14/04/2009 at 10:35

hehe it makes me giggle that Jenson keeps getting mentioned on the news because of the diffuser hearing today.

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 10:35

    Like Heidfeld?

ish, longer hair and a bit more shaven.

i think i've id let my face grow like that then i'd have been getting some serious comments :P

what film are you going to watch?

  • RG14/04/2009 at 10:36

what film are you going to watch?

Fast and Furious. I'm the type of guy who goes on the internet for reviews and rotten tomatoes is only giving in 53%. Yipee

  • chris evans14/04/2009 at 10:37

what film are you going to watch?

I'm going to guess Fast & Furious

  • Dank14/04/2009 at 10:37

Crumbs I feel surprisingly old by that question!

    Working. Ho hum.

Fast and Furious. I’m the type of guy who goes on the internet for reviews and rotten tomatoes is only giving in 53%. Yipee

That kind of film isn't huge on plot line, but if you like cars and explosions. Sorted!

  • RG14/04/2009 at 10:42

And I have to stay for an extra 2 hours

Bet you that is going to be ultra fun

    Boo-yah, points for me.

    Yay!

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 10:51

I can't log into BatRacer :( heavy traffic apparently

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 10:52

Stayed up far too late last night drinking wine and reading comments. Maybe it's a good idea to just accept that I've missed them! Would do it again though..

Plans? Sort my stuff for tomorrow, then sit down and work out where to go with my college project (for most of the day), then do some ironing. I needed today off work!

  • Sean Golding14/04/2009 at 11:04

I’m going to have a hair cut today, i look like an over grown bush

Heh, I had a haircut this morning.

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 11:12

    I just found a 2006 Nick pic that i look very similar too...hmm :(

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 11:12

Heh, I had a haircut this morning.

I was going to get one but now I can't be ****ed :-)

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 11:15

Right, caught up on all the overnight stuff, time for brekkie. Then lunch.

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 11:17

Oh! I've just had a thought! And I know all this talk of tomorrow is annoying anyone not going.. but..

How will we do the Pitlane Fanatic quiz?

  • RG14/04/2009 at 11:19

How will we do the Pitlane Fanatic quiz?

Oh my god, I'll finally win one.

    WOOO, HAHA, WOOOOOOOOO.

Oh damn, Steven Roy isn't going.

  • Bassano Clapper14/04/2009 at 11:22

How will we do the Pitlane Fanatic quiz?

A lot of people will be home by then

oops. we tried it from the pub last time.

  • Joe14/04/2009 at 11:36

I can't get on to Batracer, guh. I had to enter my name and password too whereas normally I'm automatically logged in.

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 11:37

I can’t get on to Batracer, guh. I had to enter my name and password too whereas normally I’m automatically logged in.

same, its being really annoying today

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2009 at 11:41

    Formula 1 in 2015. New era of everything, no Max, no Bernie. In theory life should be skipping around in fields of dasies. Instead its much worse. {Comment #146}

Now that could be a really strong script, RG - I like that idea!

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 11:42

A lot of people will be home by then

Ah yeah, I keep forgetting it's at 9

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2009 at 11:43

    8:30 actually

  • Sean Golding14/04/2009 at 11:47

same, its being really annoying today

It's been doing it since about an hour or two after the race.

  • Sean Golding14/04/2009 at 11:48

I don't think I've ever been this sweaty in my life.... Just went for a run with my dog, VERY stupid idea!

  • lou14/04/2009 at 11:51

okay i'm now refusing to listen to the sports news today on the radio, they keep mentioning the diffuser hearing today and each time they say it i get all nervous.

  • Joe14/04/2009 at 11:52

Aw crap, won't hear the appeal result until tomorrow.

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2009 at 11:52

    Who’s that then? {Comment #179}

I'm not entirely sure he's referring to last year's French Grand Prix specifically. If he isn't, then I have a sneaky feeling it might be Williams in the R. Schumacher/Montoya era, but I can't be sure. There are a few other pairings to which parts of this could apply.

Also note that some of the criteria have clearly been changed - I can't imagine any team demanding their drivers wear Thomas the Tank Engine pyjamas, especially since it doesn't sponsor any team!

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 11:53

okay i’m now refusing to listen to the sports news today on the radio, they keep mentioning the diffuser hearing today and each time they say it i get all nervous.

its when the stupid rumour storys start coming up on various websites you have to be careful. When the spy-gate thing came around, on PlanetF1 it said Mclaren had been banned from racing for 2 years, lewis was too, i nearly cried. So just be careful :)

  • lou14/04/2009 at 11:58

its when the stupid rumour storys start coming up on various websites you have to be careful.

haha, i'll be ignoring any stories from GMM as usual and i'll just try to wait for any official confirmation on the verdict. I mean i waited months to find out if the team survived less than 24hours should be easy right? :)

  • Scott Woodwiss14/04/2009 at 11:59

Herbie just finished on BBC2. The Monte Carlo film is my favourite of them all :D

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 11:59

    you say that.....hehe

i think i must be ill....for a moment there i just considered buying an sClub Juniors song....

You didn't? What brought that on?

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 12:01

You didn’t? What brought that on?

dont worry i didnt, realised what a mistake it would have been.

it was on the genius bar (the one that says what songs i might like) which worries me greatly....

  • RG14/04/2009 at 12:02

it was on the genius bar (the one that says what songs i might like) which worries me greatly….

Are you listening to songs of similar style? This could be more serious

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2009 at 12:02

    … it may be Sutil and Force India, after all. It’s the one that best fits the bill. {Comment #193}

It might have done (Force India meeting many of the criteria listed) but for three things:

    1) As pointed out, Force India's management structure is not exactly unwieldly

    2) Sutil may well still be on his original contract with the team (certainly I've not heard of him need to formally re-negotiate it at any point), in which case he isn't on a wage

    3) Fisi got a pay rise at the end of the year from an estimated €400,000 to $1.5m. If there was a pay parity issue, then logically it would be the driver getting paid less that would be getting the increase, not the one paid more.

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 12:03

Are you listening to songs of similar style? This could be more serious

i have 1 song by A1 (remember them) and was interested what songs it would suggest that are similar to that.....hmmm, i wont be doing that again

    (Sorry, poor joke, but who are they) {Comment #283}

There are a number of people near me who wish the motorway really could sing - it would cut out the monotony of being stuck in tailbacks every working day dramatically.

A1 the band are one of a number of identikit boy bands that sprung up in the wake of Take That. It was three-quarters English and one-quarter Norweigan. They released some decent middle-of-the-road pop but never reached the heights of, say, Westlife.

The meetup tomorrow in the Science Museum syas meet under a plane undercarriage.

Is that under the Lockheed Electra? Ie the big silver thing in the main hall?!

It was reasonable music to pass the time. It just dated quickly.

(In case you're wondering, I never bought an A1 album, largely because I didn't encounter one, but I did hear some of their songs in compilation albums).

Ralf-Trulli is more likely than Ralf-Montoya. But the thing is, he used the phrase, 'they NOW pay BOTH drivers', so both drivers may still be on the grid. :D

Yeap, and sometimes the cover is overplayed and not as good as the original

*cough* Valarie - Amy Winehouse *cough*

  • RG14/04/2009 at 12:52

    Fight, fight, fight, fight.

This is not the solution, the solution is for me to win it. Mr C is a pointless target now, its to beat Lou. I'm going to do it, I'm declaring war on you Lou, the Quiz War. Let this be on wikipedia and everything, the war to end all quiz wars, to be victorious in victory and sing YMCA in defeat. I ain't going down without a fight and will beat Lou, will not accept defeat, because I CAN DO IT. I WILL DO IT, and it all boils down to a Wednesday evening at 8.30pm.

Emotional speech out of the way now, thank god for that, I really don't do emotional speeches.

Why are people ashamed of the songs they bought? Music is a matter of taste and if we all liked the same thing life would be pretty dull.

But where would the fun in that be?

I don't remember the first single I bought from a music store, but I did pick up Sean Maguire - Suddenly from a charity shop for 99p. I remember it well.

First album I bought with my own money was All Saints first one.

It's the cover or bust now ;)

Boo. The sequel to page 22 will have to wait then.

    Mr C in page 23?

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 12:57

Boo. The sequel to page 22 will have to wait then.

Page 22 at the spot where the picture on page 22 was taken?

    All Saints- greatest girl band?

Why are people ashamed of the songs they bought? Music is a matter of taste and if we all liked the same thing life would be pretty dull.

cause i have a totally different taste now.. i would never buy those songs at present :)

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 13:05

Essentially somebody has set up CCTV to look at the eyes of the people watching CCTV to check if they are seeing everything.

Erm who looks at the CCTV of the CCTV room, then? And who looks at those looking at the CCTV of the CCTV room? We can go into an infinite loop here. :D

  • Sean Golding14/04/2009 at 13:05

  • RG14/04/2009 at 13:05

Essentially somebody has set up CCTV to look at the eyes of the people watching CCTV to check if they are seeing everything.

What if the person on the other end misses it, does it go in a full circle? So you get a person watching someone, watching them who is watching them watching them, watching them watching the other, watching the first one who is watching, this is too damn confusing

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 13:06

Right all, i'm going to get my barnet chopped off, have lots of Sidepodfun whilst i'm gone!! lol

Of course. I'm not saying that the songs are still good, or that we can't argue about the merits (or not!!) of them. But I don't get being ashamed about it, because who decides what is cool and what isn't?

  • lou14/04/2009 at 13:08

This is not the solution, the solution is for me to win it. Mr C is a pointless target now, its to beat Lou. I’m going to do it, I’m declaring war on you Lou, the Quiz War. Let this be on wikipedia and everything, the war to end all quiz wars, to be victorious in victory and sing YMCA in defeat. I ain’t going down without a fight and will beat Lou, will not accept defeat, because I CAN DO IT. I WILL DO IT, and it all boils down to a Wednesday evening at 8.30pm.

haha :) you'll win easily ;) specially this wednesday as i may not be there ;)

Nope, they were awesome. My favourite band is probably Muse and I listen to all kinds of other odd stuff, but I will stand up and say that All Saints were a damn good band.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 13:13

So should I be embarrassed about the All Saints thing?

No of course not :) You are totally right about the cool thing. The most deeply uncool thing in the world is pretending that you've always been cool. Because that involves saying that you are cool - which is uncool!

My first album was Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers so I think you're on a firm footing.

I do know somebody who the first thing they bought was Teenage Kicks. Which is just about the coolest single you could buy. However they didn't like it and gave it away :)

  • me14/04/2009 at 13:17

Why haven't we heard about it then? Is this what Red Bull were referring to? Is so, that was just an opinion, not a judgment. That's a world of difference.

Interesting, too, the speculation at RealBrawnGP.com. They think that the trick diffuser is bait for the Ferrari and McLaren engineers. According to them, it's a different part of the car that's giving them a bigger advantage.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 14:44

That's right. It doesn't seem like Williams, Toyota, or Brawn have heard of this judgment as well, which would be very odd, honestly.

I almost hope the diffusers do get banned, just to see the look on everyone else faces when Brawn, Williams and Toyota are still at the front.

IF they're still at the front. A grid with no trick diffusers would probably be led by BMW, I think.

The meetup tomorrow in the Science Museum syas meet under a plane undercarriage.

    WOOO HOOOO

Fantastic news but Bernie needs to make his bloody mind up!

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 14:57

    It’s ABOUT time! :O

That said, I'll say nothing until we see them on the final calendar. Remember, with Korea and India coming on too, and only 20 slots, we may lose another European round.

    That said - quick poll:

What circuit are we more likely to see F1 race in by 2010?

    a. Montreal

    b. Donington Park

  • Vinnie14/04/2009 at 14:57

Fantastic news but Bernie needs to make his bloody mind up!

Well he says it's up to the teams now... and we KNOW they want to go back to NA.

    Sadly, B.

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 14:58

Fantastic news but Bernie needs to make his bloody mind up!

It wont happen, the simple reason is that Bernie dosent want to get rid of the races that filled the indy and canadian gaps, so for them to get back to Canada the teams have to agree to more races, Bernie then goes and makes a 20 race grid, teams get angry, we're back where we started

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 14:58

Montreal without a doubt personally. I can't see Donington being done in time...

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 14:59

Although I still think it's in Bernie's hands rather than 'the teams' as he puts it. He'll still get some silly excuse or financial way to stop Montreal coming back probably.

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 14:59

I actually think it WILL happen, but at the price of a European round. Perhaps Barcelona or Budapest? Or, heaven forbid, Donington Park.

  • Jon Waldock14/04/2009 at 15:00

Although I still think it’s in Bernie’s hands rather than ‘the teams’ as he puts it. He’ll still get some silly excuse or financial way to stop Montreal coming back probably.

He gets the teams to agree with say, an 18 race calendar, so he puts Canda in for 2 years, then it gets removed in favour of an Indian race (for sake of argument) then the teams get angry, so they make it an 19 race calendar....etc etc etc

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 15:00

Although I still think it’s in Bernie’s hands rather than ‘the teams’ as he puts it. He’ll still get some silly excuse or financial way to stop Montreal coming back probably.

I think Bernie really wants to go back to NA - there's still money to be made there.

    On another note,

    Journeyer

First single - n/a - Why buy singles when they're not much cheaper than albums?

First album - Lighthouse Family - Postcards from Heaven

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 15:00

Montreal without a doubt personally. I can’t see Donington being done in time…

It's possible, but the cynic in me says Bernie is preparing Montreal if and when Donington fails. It'll be his way of appeasing us.

    al... oh. bah.

For me she just seemed to be annoying when she was on tv or being interviewed, seemed more damn interested in being ventre of attention than everything. Like Brazil 2008 when we got to see ehr running about screaming jumping in mid air through the pitlane instead of the actual aftermath of that end to Brazil... although the camera guys can be blamed partially she still annoyed me ;)

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 15:21

Now i may be digging myself an early grave here….but without saying the words; ‘all of her’… what is it about her that you dislike so much?

I don't really have anything against her in particular. She's part of the whole dealie with random people getting too much attention when we'd rather be looking at / hearing from someone else.

I think the 'THAT woman' thing came from not wanting to give her anymore coverage and namechecks than she was already getting.

I think Jessica Michibata is the new THAT woman, simply because I've seen far too much of her on my TV already this year, and I actually know lots of things about her without actually searching for info on her.

At least she doesn't run around and scream her head off. And we only see her on F1 weekends.

That said, she's only getting attention now that Button's started winning. They actually started going out last year.

Should be interesting if she's in Bahrain. THAT woman will be going to Bahrain too. :D

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 15:31

Hmmm….anyone think FOTA’s not going to last the day?

They'll last the day. We Filipinos would call this a 'moro-moro', lots of theatrics, but the decision has already been made a long time ago.

Most teams will know that, so this is just a bunch of theatrics - but this is peanuts compared to FOTA v. FIA.

  • Amy14/04/2009 at 15:31

i think it’ll become a collective THOSE WOMEN!

The original is probably gutted she never got her name into the press with a post-win shag in the paddock.

In that Planet F1 article it says that Renault have a new style diffuser ready for China should it be deemed legal.

  • Flibster14/04/2009 at 15:33

Evening meal now in the oven. :D

Got given some freshly deadded animals over the weekend so having a lovely roast of 3 of them tonight. Having roast Gooducken with roast tatties and mounds of steamed veg. :D

As do most of the other teams (with the probable exception of RBR).

In that Planet F1 article it says that Renault have a new style diffuser ready for China should it be deemed legal.

It's funny that Tozzi says that cost-cutting should be one reason to ban it - and yet, even if it banned, they've already spent on developing their own versions! Not like they can get a refund for that. ;)

  • Flibster14/04/2009 at 15:34

At least 2 teams that I know oif approached the Technical side of the FIA with similar designs and were told no. I suppose it's just digging them out and scale models in the wind tunnel and seing what effect it has on the rest of hte package.

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 15:34

That would be Renault and Red Bull.

But I wonder how similar they are. They might have missed a trick with what the other 3 did, that made their version legal, and Renault's version illegal.

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 15:38

The teams are complaining that it WILL cost them lots of money, what they actually mean is that it HAS cost them lots of money

This reminds me of a really stupid stupid thing BBC have just done. They made an advert for BBC Radio with all the presenters and Muse, as well as getting Muse fans to travel into the studios they were film it, did it all, everything edited and setup for the ad, then announced this week it was being binned as 'the advert was too extragavant in a time of economic worry'. Their statement as well was going on about how 'the worry of offending viewers who may be struggling with the current status of the economy is an factor in the decision'.

So.. you paid for it all, edited it all, got it all sorted, then decide 'nah' because it looks too expensive? Despite paying for it already? Silly, silly people...

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 15:40

Oh and that money obviously came out of the TV license payers too. Nice to see what we're paying towards.

Not sure if this has been posted here:

As if Honda hasn't been embarrassed enough:

    http://www.f1network.net/main/s169/st143012.htm

Honda are facing legal threats from insolvency experts PKF, after apparently blocking the sale of the defunct Super Aguri team and failing to settle a bill for some £300,000.

It seems that Honda's F1 legacy is getting worse by the day.

Try lowering your aggression by another 5.

If that works, increase pace again.

Oh I don't mind. I think Lukeh is coming further. I was hoping to dovetail it with a 'get drunk and catch up with my sister' night but she's gone to Spain instead - charming! But she did come down here at the weekend so that's fine.

South Wales is about the same distance I'd say as Dorset, perhaps a bit further. It's a 2 hour train ride but that's on the m4 corridor so it's pretty much direct to London.

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 18:59

For me she just seemed to be annoying when she was on tv or being interviewed, seemed more damn interested in being ventre of attention than everything. Like Brazil 2008 when we got to see ehr running about screaming jumping in mid air through the pitlane instead of the actual aftermath of that end to Brazil… although the camera guys can be blamed partially she still annoyed me

But that was not her doing. The TV directors decide who to point the cameras at. If she reacted bady to a camera being stuck in her face or stomped off when someone approached her with a mic she would be getting grief for that too.

  • me14/04/2009 at 19:01

In F1 she is relying on someone approaching her and the commentator actually knowing who she is. Look at the number of races she has been to. How many talk shows could she have done in the same time with the guarantee of her product geting plugged?

  • RG14/04/2009 at 19:14

i caught up with f1m at the weekend.

Is that just what your saying ;)

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 19:14

you and pat are both crazy. even i haven’t read them all and it’s my job! i have no idea how you followed last nights conversation, but well done you ;)

Neither have I. I liked the computer game stuff but I can't remember anything else.

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 19:14

Am I naive to think she was there because her boyfriend was on the verge of becoming world champion?

She was there to show her support for the sport of Formala Fun... or something!

  • me14/04/2009 at 19:14

but look at the pr post-monaco and post-brazil.

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 19:14

    i can’t!

It doesn't take long if you don't try to make sense of them

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 19:15

Start at the beginning and read them in order very quickly

    Skim-reading is the answer.

How many F1 wives and girlfriends do you really think have a clue what is going on though?

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 19:17

don’t believe it for a second. where is she this year, now he’s starting at the back?

Not being shown on camera because they are covering the other woman. Mark Webber's father goes to all the races but never has a camera stuck in his face. All the people who complain about Anthony Hamilton don't realise that a lot of fathers are at the vast majority of races. If you win your family get cameras stuck in their faces.

  • RG14/04/2009 at 19:17

How many F1 wives and girlfriends do you really think have a clue what is going on though?

Thats a thought, probably the wives since they'd have watched it for a few years

  • lou14/04/2009 at 19:17

How many F1 wives and girlfriends do you really think have a clue what is going on though?

Jenson's old girlfriend was quiet the fan of f1, and DC's wife kows about motorsport + f1 .. not sure about any of the other girlfriends or wives though

  • me14/04/2009 at 19:17

Not being shown on camera because they are covering the other woman.

Exactly , you always have to remember that you are only seeing what the media want you to see.

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 19:18

Even with the jokes here and there at the WAGs of Formula 1, at least they don't get the obscene levels of media attention footballer's wives do here in the uk. eugh.

  • chris evans14/04/2009 at 19:19

    Or footballers.

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 19:19

How many F1 wives and girlfriends do you really think have a clue what is going on though?

Exactly. Who had heard of Button's girlfriend before Australia. Jackie Stewart's wife used to get a lot of coverage as did Damon Hill's mother (as a wife then mother). Even Mansell's wife had a camera stuckin her face. It has always happened.

  • RG14/04/2009 at 19:19

Schumacher's wife went to a load of races and she didn't sing. Assorted DC partners were always on TV and none of them sang. She may be doing it for the publicity but she is not the first partner of a racing driver to get a lot of coverage.

Watch any film from the late 60s and you can bet Helen Stewart, Bette Hill and Nina Rindt are on screen every ten minutes during the race.

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 20:13

Last time I looked there was a perfectly good one in Montreal….

Montreal is that great a track. It only became great when it was dropped from the calendar. Before that the surface was rubbish and its safety was dubious. Too much exposed concrete like the wall Kubica hit and no real way to sort it. There is not a decent corner i the whole place.

It is however unique and has some history attached to iit and always pulls a crowd.

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 20:13

You are probably right, but I've always had a soft spot for it. I think because I have always enjoyed racing around there on games.

Also remember all of that fuss about Posh and Becks. And they weren't even anything to do with anything.

She is more famous than Lewis Hamilton. That's the thing.

  • RG14/04/2009 at 20:17

Montreal is that great a track. It only became great when it was dropped from the calendar.

I loved Canada before it was dropped, sure the surface ain't great, but thats the point of a street circuit, again sure there are exposed walls and it can be adressed better and i think thats the major flaw of it.

But I love the track, its not a circuit-circuit, but not a street track, a good mix and I love it for it. More often than not produces a good race, I love it.

  • Flibster14/04/2009 at 20:32

My biggest problem about tomorrow is that I’m not sure what to do about iPhone battery life. Live commenting does tend to drain those batteries! Silly no replaceable battery design! Normally I don’t mind but today cuh!

You have problems with battery life?

Think about the poor person with a 4 year old brick with a 4 year old battery in it...

  • lou14/04/2009 at 20:34

Im just panicking about not getting recognised, and people thinking Im some kind of lunatic when I go from large group to large group trying to find you all

if i was able to find Christine and Mr C at Goodwood you'll easily find them at the Science museum ;)

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 20:35

Also quite a lot of people know what I look like and I also have met quite a few before so come over and say hello!

  • chris evans14/04/2009 at 20:36

We should have a photo exchanging session so we know what each other look like in advance!

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 20:36

if i was able to find Christine and Mr C at Goodwood you’ll easily find them at the Science museum ;)

Didn't you recognise them by their voices or was that someone else?

  • Steven Roy14/04/2009 at 20:36

Just done it I feel marginally more confident now

You will find Christine easilty. It's not obvious from the videos but she is about 6ft 1 or 2.

  • lou14/04/2009 at 20:37

Didn’t you recognise them by their voices or was that someone else?

wasn't me... they found me by the honda tent bit... i was taking a photo and Em elbowed me in the ribs, i turned round and there they were :)

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 20:37

Think about the poor person with a 4 year old brick with a 4 year old battery in it…

It is generally fine until you start using the 3G to upload pictures. I might have wifi there though I guess.

Where is Emily nowadays, she kinda come here for one live commenting and like never came back.

  • Flibster14/04/2009 at 20:39

Have both 3g and wifi as well - try to avoid wifi as it's a killer.

3g isn't too bad, but I do have one of the first proper 3g handsets so it's a little slower than the modern ones.

  • Alex Andronov14/04/2009 at 20:39

Evening all. All this talk of meetings is a bit depressing as I won't be there to join in the fun.

Re. iPhone battery life - there are several things you can do to maximise your battery life:

Turn off stuff you're not using - location services, Wi-Fi, 3G, even the phone radio itself (airplane mode).

Turn off push notification and set checking of mail to manual.

Turn down the brightness - this makes a massive difference. Also, set the auto lock to the minimum possible time of 1 minute.

Remove unwanted/unused applications. Switch your phone off and back on again (full power off/on) on a semi-regular basis, i.e. at least twice a week.

Finally, if your battery life is still poor, try a full restore of the phone. This can have an effect too.

So we all stand under plane with a magnum?

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 21:13

I’m trying to remember where my JPS Lotus cap is…

Yes, caps, I'd forgotten caps. I've got several racing caps but stopped wearing them ages ago. Sometimes do when I go to motorsport events. To cap, or not to cap..

  • Flibster14/04/2009 at 21:17

So we all stand under plane with a magnum?

    Hmmm... *checks weather forcast*

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 21:27

Well I'm hoping to arrive at about 12:15 - 12:30 and then hang around until someone else decides what happens.

  • chris evans14/04/2009 at 21:28

Me, lou and Lukeh should all be getting there at just before 12 I think.

  • Chris14/04/2009 at 21:28

So do we go at 1 .. hang around till? time

I'm arriving in waterloo at about 11:15, then making my way over (stoping for lunch on the way, so I'll be there from about 11:45 onwards really.

  • Pat W14/04/2009 at 21:28

I was going to rush straight from Waterloo but actually there isn't any hurry so I'll probably stop at Waterloo for some food unless other plans are afoot.

I might even get a later train.

  • Jackie14/04/2009 at 21:28

i think i'll be there around 12, but finding the actual meeting place within the museum should be interesting, cause i don't think i'll be coming in the main entrance. I'll probably be coming in the entance in the underground passage from the underground...

  • Jackie14/04/2009 at 21:31

Ah well if I get lost I'll just look around the exhibit after 1pm looking for a big crown of folks

The way I did it last summer was to follow the tunnel from the underground, and it emerged in the street close to the main entrance. I'm not sure if there is a more direct route, I might have missed it.

Howdy all, planning the sidepodtrip i see.

I've spent an evening ice skating and didn't fall over once :) not bad for the first time in 2/3 years :D

how is everyone? anyone do anything fun today?

    anyone hear anything diffuser-gate?

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 21:32

It'll be the same for me as lou said, will be a lot easier personally to go straight to the passage leading to the museum and then finding the meeting place from there.

    Yay! I am not the only one who likes that song! {Comment #301}

I like pretty much everything both artists have done so far, so I wasn't surprised that I liked it. Especially since I also like the Celine Dion version of the song. Such a difficult one to sing well, yet so many different ways of singing it in ways that bring out different facets of emotion in the song. Jim Steinman is a very gifted songwriter.

  • Joe14/04/2009 at 21:58

Martin has never done Hungary to be fair, never understood that, is he like wanted by the Hungarian mafia or something.

The guy quoted the guy who manages both Jake and Steve Ryder and actually said he regarded Steve far superior! What's he been huffin'?!

    Why are people ashamed of the songs they bought? Music is a matter of taste and if we all liked the same thing life would be pretty dull. {Comment #322}

This is true. However, what we like one decade is not necessarily what we like another decade and everyone prefers stuff that lasts.

As it happens, I still like my first single and album - it's some of the subsequent purchases that make me wonder at my cost/value calculation methodology...

  • Lukeh14/04/2009 at 22:06

She's on tour with Britney Spears. But she'll go on break to be with Lewis in Bahrain.

Jenson’s old girlfriend was quiet the fan of f1, and DC’s wife kows about motorsport + f1 .. not sure about any of the other girlfriends or wives though

Louise Griffiths? Didn't she even do a song for ITV's F1 coverage in 2004? Karen would obviously know a lot about F1 - she worked in it! I I wonder how they're doing, though. Since she and DC got married, she's laid low. :)

    It's Shirtsinger. :D Hehehe.

But as Steven said, F1 covers these ladies where they want it or not. Just ask Corinna and Cora Schumacher, Georgie Hill, Erja Hakkinen, and Joan Villeneuve.

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 22:14

Watch any film from the late 60s and you can bet Helen Stewart, Bette Hill and Nina Rindt are on screen every ten minutes during the race.

Agreed. I think Courage's wife was shown too from time to time.

You will find Christine easilty. It’s not obvious from the videos but she is about 6ft 1 or 2.

    she's pretty tall, Christine... :O

  • Andy Taylor14/04/2009 at 22:18

Agreed. I think Courage’s wife was shown too from time to time.

One of the older documentaries shows wives/girlfriends on lap timing duty, so they actually had something useful to do.

Of course, the digital live timing system means there's nothing left for them to do now.

Can you imagine THAT woman doing lap timing? Would've looked interesting, that's for sure. Or maybe not... :|

But of course, she never goes to the races now… She’s completely vanished from my radar.

she doesn't go to races any more cause she has a busy modelling career i think, plus i can't imagine Jenson is going to invite her. She may go to the races as part of the pubic we don't know. Thing is we only knew she was there because of the cameras etc.

  • Journeyer14/04/2009 at 22:22

Let's see if she drops by at Silverstone, even if not as Jenson's guest. She'd be in the Paddock Club, though, so we may not see her.

Seems a shame, since there was even an insert in the pre-Malaysia 2004 build-up on ITV about the recording of the song. All that effort for the song to disappear into the ether so soon...

Same here. I've been present for some but not contributed much during them.

Partly due to the crazy timezones, partly due to typing other stuff at the time.
