I leave him for just four days and find that the daily post has shifted to arrive just five minutes before the next day begins. I am back now and order will be restored. Because I have no idea what's been going on and Mr C tells me I have missed nothing in F1 news, I will simply regale you with tales of my holiday. To add a twist, though, try and guess which F1 driver I was emulating at the time each event occurred.
- I already mentioned in the comments the moment when I was allowed to take charge of the boat and guide it into a lock. Unfortunately, I managed to bounce off both walls and the other boat that was already inside. Who does that sound like?
- We turned a sharp corner and didn't make it in time, getting stuck in the mud. This required some poles and some serious pushing. It's a little like marshals getting the call to shove a car back on track - who would do that?
- Finally, having worked out how to not injure one's self in the dangerous call of duty that is steering and navigating a 50 foot long boat, I then dismounted and landed in a patch of stinging nettles, causing serious injury to one's right leg. I say serious, there's a bit of a red bit, that's all. However, injuries, right legs, sound familiar?
I won't bore you with anymore holiday stories, because I don't want to be that person, but I will be going through my camera soon, so look forward to holiday snaps shortly. Even if the sun didn't come out until we'd handed the boat back. I'll see you in the comments... after I've caught up.
I like that the tags give away the answers ;)
I'm interested to which future storys will be put in the "boat" tag :P
Mark Webber doesn't crash a lot
Races to Remember : Malaysia 2009
has a wonky leg though
Do you really want one of the unluckiest drivers to be in your team? Unless he has a turn of fortunes and gets to show a clean pair of heels to the Wunderkid on some circuits his F1 days may be numbered.
His luck is generally down to the team, or other drivers being completely stupid. If they can sort the car out this year, he'll be on for a good one :)
I don't think he'll be gone from F1. Maybe from red Bull, but I think another team will take him. Renault perhaps? I'm sure he'll do much better there than Piquet. Otherwise, he may move to a smaller team but either way, he'll still be there I reckon. Then again, maybe I'm just hoping...
just explaining to christine why there's a pic of franck and a halo in drop.io.
a girl can miss a lot in three days.
now who would do something silly like that?
forgot about that....have fun explaining....
I blame steven roy :P
Anyone else feel like the world is rocking slightly? No? Must just be me then.
Welcome back Mrs C. I used to think that if one squinted and un-focussed your eyes a lot, I could pass for Franck. I don't have the sideburns, but the hair and stubble I can manage on my day off. The halo picture really seals the deal for me though - ask anyone! :-) *no photographic evidence will be provided*
As much as I am a fan of Mr Webber, I have to say that the rule of luck is that you make your own.
It's a trick-of-the-mind effect of returning to dry land after getting use to life on the river.
Surely the only explanation is why it did not happen sooner.
I don't think we were mad enough earlier
I think alchohol paid its part too :P
Still no sign of the Jackie Stewart documentary being on the iPlayer :(
Sadly it doesn't look like its going to be repeated either
Time to check the torrents, then.
Christne, were you referring to 3 different drivers in your holiday stories? Or were you just thinking of 1 retired guy? ;)
Works either way, actually. :D
:D
So, cmon, 3 drivers, or just 1 driver? :P Don't be coy...
Hey guys :)
Scott! How are ya? :D
Three separate drivers.
Ahhh... Alright, fair enough. I know who they are. ;)
Thank goodness, some F1 news!
Autosport has stories on Trulli's bullish approach for China as well as Rosberg's prospects, while BMW are looking at a lighter car for Kubica and Sepang hasn't ruled night racing out.
I won't post links, you can find them yourself easily enough ;)
A little tired, but fine thanks :)
Any thoughts on these?
Scott you should take a look at this:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/GRID+Laptime+challenge
Would be great for you to take part :)
Were you reading all the comments last night about classic games? I woke up a bit late cos of that...
Trulli and Rosberg can be bullish only if their diffusers make the cut.
BMW's lighter car for Kubica is obviously needed - but they probably won't have it ready until Spain.
Sepang will do night racing, so long as they get the funding. Once that's in place, they'll do it.
Nope, but I was listening to music until about half 1 last night. :P
Was any part of McLaren's $100 million fine suspended? If so, could they have to pay it as punishment for their misleading a stewards inquiry?
Not that I know of.
I think it was all paid, well it was $100 minus the money they would have got from Bernie
I'm off, night fellas.
Yup, that's right.
G'night, Sean.
I do not think so, but $100 million included their lost income from FIA since they earned no points that season.
Night Sean!
See ya Sean
Oh yes, isn't the hearing this week?
It'll be ongoing this time tomorrow.
Oh yeah, its the 14th tomorrow.
So how long do you think we'll have to wait until the decision is released?
Not long, I hope. If everything goes to plan, we should hear about it within the day.
It'll either take all day, or 5 minutes lol
It'll either take 5 minutes, or 5 days. ;)
touché
Good night Sean
It's good night from me... and goodnight from him!
According to FIA website, decision will be announced Wednesday afternoon
Oh that's just great - 1 more day of waiting... Ugh.
we'll have to keep an eye on the news while in London then.
That could be intresting
Were in yesterdays somehow, i'll put it over in the right place
Calling ourselves SideGrandPrixPodBreakawayCast, rolls right off the tongue :P
Hehe, Michael Ball is singing the Honda advert song on paul o'Grady's show.
If it's not Andy Williams, I don't want to know!
My god, they were brave letting Nelson out in the snow with people about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogqRK6Esn3g
yeah he did kinda ruin it :(
Snow in Dubai? Just plain silly.
Did he stall it at the end?
I guessed he got the car snowed in, but anythings possible with piquet.
look at the amount of people who run to the car. theres loooooooads
Have you tried following the world record ghost on Grid Lukeh? It's ridiculous! I'm bringing my time down though, a tenth at a time.....
the other video is ace too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hKsoy1YlfM&NR=1
snowball fights in dubai?
If I try following the WR time my times go mad and fall down ridiculously compared to what I normally do, it's an incredible lap.
I actually managed to touch him through turn one once, then he was off into the distance again.
Moving MotoGP Live Commenting at Lou's behest. ;)
so we are :) back in todays
Dovizioso looking handy right now.
Jon, your name is no longer on the list for the science museum meet up, are you no longer coming?
Aaah, you noticed hehe. No, unfortunately i'm pretty exhausted at the moment (i've had a chronic illness for over a year, boo, im alot better than this time last year but....) and was pushing it alot last week, so i need some sleep and rest. However much i want to go, a day in london isnt what my body needs. Unfortunately. boo.
Capirossi's crash was spectacular, with all those sparks.
Thats whats guarenteed from a Moto GP race....BIIIIIIIG Crashes
A bit naughty by De Angelis there... or was it a rookie error?
Dunno, but it looks great :D
Stoner's upped the gap from 1.9 to 2.9 - barring trouble, this race is Stoner's to lose.
Ayt, going to bed. If anything huge happens, I'll be back.
Otherwise, good night. ;)
Night Journeyer
How will you know, if you're asleep? :)
Goodnight
I think he's watching it in bed ;)
Hey, talking about Xbox 360 games. I just got a 360, and I wanted to know what the best racing game for the system is. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'll say it before anyone else does.....GRID :P
Now that's not just because of the competition, right? Right?
lol, i dont think so, but its meant to be great, although it depends what kind of game you want. If you want a Gran Turismo esq game then go for GRID, if you want one where you can change setup etc (Like Race Driver 3) then its probably not the game your looking for. But for all situations, it's meant to be great lol
No it genuinely is but it's a mix of arcade and simulation as I said the other night. It's a brilliant, brilliant racing game though, also check out Forza Motorsport 2 and Project Gotham racing 4.
Yeah if you want ultra realism like Gran Turismo then Forza Motorsport 2 is the game for you :)
Basically I've been deciding if I want GRiD or Forza 2... So I was hoping some of you knew which one is better. The last racing game I really got into was Gran Turismo 3, but I enjoyed playing 4 (though the changes made it really hard for me at first).
I personally prefer GRID. It's a very exciting game, it looks and feels beautiful to play and it had so much to do in terms of racing styles and disciplines and the career mdoe is very addictive too, great fun. Like Jon said though there are stuff like a lack of car steups and the handling is easily leaning towards arcade rather than a proper sim you may have played in previous race driver games but it's still a quality game.
With Forza 2 it's so deep into a simulation type of game it tends to make Gran Turismo look like a birthday party personally. It's mega realistic and there's plenty to adjust, setup, change etc and the car editor as absolutely sensation, and unlimited in creativity (For an example, see here and here to see what I made 2 years ago. But I found the actual gameplay a bit tiring and quite lifeless too quickly, it's all personal preference though so you may love it if you enjoy the Gran Turismo games :)
Okay, it seems like GRiD will be the game to go for then. While I like simulation stuff, I think I'd prefer to actually enjoy playing my video games. Knowing me though, I'm just buying one now, and the other one in a month or so...
Time to leave Norfolk and go back to civilization! :D
Shame the drive is probably going to be hell...
They're both very cheap which is a consolation :P
But yeah I'd say go for Grid :)
do it :D
Oh thanks FIA, put the Chinese GP at a decent hour when sleep and football can't get in a way.
They're the best
Right-o, this weekend I'm going to get grid.
I may be the resident games reviewer, but I don't think I can say any more than Lukeh really!
Oh, and if you are in the UK, Gamestation are selling grid for £20 at the moment.
Sorry, I'm in America.
In that case then you get games far cheaper than us anyway! :P
Looking online, it's $30 for grid, new. So yes, being an American can sometimes be awesome. Just know that I cry knowing I wasn't into F1 until AFTER we lost our home race.
I found GRID for £16 on Play.com (on PC) XBOX wasnt that much cheaper
*that much more expensive
The fact you're drivibg away from Norfolk shoud help though.
Only about £5 cheaper than here, but cheaper all the same.
Oh, I see the MotoGP ran then, anyone watch it?
Yep, it was good, a few good battles
Yep, Stoner came, Stoner saw, Stoner conquered.
Everyone has seen url shortening sites. Well someone has come up with the opposite. What the point to it is I don't know.
http://www.hugeurl.com/
Oh my goodness thats amazing
*cough* daily thread *cough*
I'll put this in the right place
just typed in sidepodcast.com, maybe when there is ultra-blogging software it might work
Over here, Steven.
*waves*
I'd like to say i didn't see Mr C's comment and was trying to be helpful.
appreciated r.g. still looking into way to solve threading issue. more on that front soon.
Evening all, just a quick 1, I know we're meeting about mid-day ish on Wed but where? outside the science museum or have we got a particular nearby venue in mind?
That is gloriously pointless.
I put on the wiki the subtitle 'Meet up Place', but no one had put anything there yet.
I think the plan was either in the cafe on the museum, or under the massive plane undercarriage which is apparently there.
Hi everyone.
Last I heard was next to the landing gear in the main lobby area. Apparently you can't miss it.
we'll be by the big undercarriage thing, although i still suspect we'll actually meet in the queue outside.
it's half term and the there's a special nick park animation thing just opened in time for the holidays, i suspect it'll be manic :)
I saw a photo, it's pretty big.
A few of us have emailed our phone numbers to Mr.C to help with finding each other.
people probably know but if anyone is coming from the underground there is an an underground walkway straight to the museum....
Right so I'll see you outside in the queue or by the landing gear.
Who me? I sneaked in. No-one saw me.
from south kensington underground station?
looking forward to it, although weather.com is predicting rain. so umbrellas may be essential.
indoors?
Correct.
i was assuming the queue is outside. is it covered?
When I went, it wasn't.
yep.
ah rightyy
I'm very excited for it, although nervous too. But mainly excited :D
Do we then have to go outside to queue though?
not a clue...i'm assume it's like the V & A where it's like a separate entrance...
So..... shall we all go in via the underground so we are coming at it from the same direction?
i'm still deciding if i can use it as an excuse to dust off my Dslr :D but i'm not sure..
i think if we all come the ways we are planning and just try and meet at the big aeroplane related thing in the entrance hall... no doubt i'll get lost trying to find it, but it'll be an adventure all the same ;)
Have you sent your number to Mr/Mrs C?
I havent sent mine... should i?
They already have my number ;)
Might as well.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74455
Latest development in the witch-hunt.....
Looks like they are not gonna be happy until they tear McLaren appart...
Ok I've emailed on my number to christine just in case :)
right, just checked the underground times and I should get to south kensington station at about 10 to 12. What time are y'all gonna be getting there?
i suppose i should check train times...
I'll be getting there that time too based on what i've seen so far with my plans :D
"Important day for Ferrari at Paris tomorrow"
Saw that 'headline' on F1Technical....isn't that really bad grammar?
Me too!
Now I'm not suggesting you hand it out to all, but a back up may be helpful say if Mr/Mrs C are out of signal or on the phone to someone else.
Cool beans. We'll all have to wave page 22 in the air to find each other!
I was going to suggest something along those lines.
I'll be getting in to Waterloo at that time. Add the length of time to pick up a cup of tea and a snack and 20 minutes for the tube, should be there 12:10 - 12:15. I think there is a wide variety of arrival times.
On reflection I may pick up a snack in the supermarket tomorrow.
Us early comers will just chill by the undercarriage for a while then.
Wow, there's a sentence I never thought I'd hear myself say.
I'm still waiting to say
'That was a clean race from DC'
Might not get to say that though
You could say it in terms of not arguing with Eddie?
He doesn't exactly, race though does he?
depends if he racing in ROC again doesn't it?
I'm looking at the TFL website's journey planner. It says South Kensington tube can get very busy and suggests Gloucester Road or Kensington as alternatives.
I am ignoring them.
Theres been some serious tube works going on in the last few days, so make sure you can change your route when you get there
Watching the BBC's Australia qualifying show now and the video intro still astounds me.Infact all their videos have been brilliant.
I just read that, I'm going to live dangerously.
oh.. it can get very busy.. :( i don't like busy tubes... not nice at all. Hopefully it will be ok on wednesday
The only way to fly.
The time your going it will be alot easier, it just depends when your coming out
I wish I had a job like that, I really do. Their jobs are incredible and as you know Joe I absolutely love doing stuff like that.
After using the Paris Metro, I don't think I will ever like the London Underground.
Their videos are incredible, even. Although I imagine the job isn't too bad too :D
The race intro, wow, speechless.
"At 18 thousand revolutions per minute, this isn't the sound of music. It's the scream of science....."
In a awesome suave Scottish voice too.
I'll see if I can get it converted to a WMM format, if it doesn't take too long I'll do it. Want to get it on youtube, plus a few other BBC F1 bits.
I'm wondering how that James Allen petition is coming along
'Signature 134 - James Allen the 3rd
Signature 135 - Bob Allen
Signature 136 - Ames Jallen
Signature 137 - Alan James
Signature 138 - Johnathon Legard'
etc
Just seen it, they took my 'James Allen' off. So they can't handle there superhero world saviour of a commentator James Allen actually signing it.
Evening all...
Hope all is well in the world of Sidepodcast!
Yup, just working out science museum plans.
Y'auright Alex.
They took James Allen off the list of 'Bring Back James Allen'
Could someone answer me this question...
Are the engine manufacturers limited to how many teams they can sell their engines to? I was looking through the regulations the other day trying to find it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Sounds good!
I am really trying to attempt attending. Do we have to buy tickets for the exhibition do we know?
Phew!
No, all free entry as far as I know.
The James Allen was me btw.
They are only allowed to supply two teams but Ferrari got a dispensation to supply a third last season and Mercedes have the same dispensation this year.
Thanks Steven. Writing a post for the blog.
Also, why is the Radio Five Live team basically doing Force India' podcast now? I am listening to it now and it has the Five Live team on it of David Croft and what is her name... Holly Samos. How can the BBC possibly green light this?
they're independent journalists. i don't think they're exclusively contracted to the bbc. croftie still does the darts, right? but you're correct, with maurice, it is the bbc team minus davidson.
Is it Maurice that writes for the Guardian?
OK that makes sense. Over here in the states, all journalists are not allowed to do stuff like that. It's apart of the standards contracts over here. You are not allowed to be a spokesperson or be paid to advertise unless it is under direction and permission of your employing paper or station. Even that, it has to be on a subject which you are not directly reporting on.
Love for LCLT, Wooooo! *Goes mad and puts it in the right bloomin place
hmmm 200 odd messages with todays date, posted on yesterdays post... this evening...
rofl..... (especially as Andy seems to have been a bit of a culprit, rofl)
BTW - wednesday.... there are buses in London as well (and they are rarely as crowded as the tube on routes towards south ken... especially outside of 'rush hour' :-) )
that really isn't funny :(
am thinking we could just make a really, really good version of lclt.
multiple threads on one screen?
Actually I'm liking my idea, you start of with on thread, but if you wanna look at others you click, add new LCLT, and the screen splits in half, so you can comment. Only problem is people could still get confused where they are commenting.
nope, quite the opposite. single threaded, but maybe an alert that says "new comment on alternate thread". something like that.
there has to be a deliberate user action that involves moving from thread x to thread y.
CIVILIZATION!!!!
Finally got home...
A11 - standstill
A14 - 10-20mph
AAARRGGGHHH!!!
Not a fan of the provinces?
Welcome back Flibster :)
When I'm in charge my car will be fitted with .50 cal machine guns on both front wings.
It will be illegal for any trucks to be on the same stretch of road as me
And if anyone breaks down... death by being tied inbetween 2 petrol guzzling V8's and torn asunder.
GRRRRRR!
I'm sorry... I was making 'funny' at Andy for commenting (out loud at home) about things being on the wrong day, whilst all that time posting on the 'wrong thread'.... whibble
it's okay. for me it's a slightly sore subject, cause we never wanted to spend our lives organising comments. it's one of the main reasons we dropped the forum very quickly. you can organise threads in a forum, we just don't want to. ;)
Ah, BMW driver.
Although it could be argued that using the a14 on a bank holiday towards London this is all 'as normal'... its like driving north on the a30 or m5, or east on the a303 or m4... bank holiday = just don't do it unless you like going very very very *very* slowly... (or is it just spending years living in the west country that convinces you of this?)
No - Mazda
But don't get me started on those tutonic satan worshippers!
test from chrome
yay!! :D
Woo and indeed Hoo :)
hello Lou
I never thought of trying chrome the other day, shows how tired i was before the racing :)
Fair point.
To be honest, the main reason I use the doohickey is that I find it generally easier on the eye. A nice redesigned LCLT would be fine for me.
it's certainly due a refresh :)
Is it weird that I prefer new posts being at the top of the screen rather than the bottom?
new comments you mean?
Aye, it's a good job you can read minds.
:)
I now have two windows open so that I can go back and forth and keep up...
... but then I am one of the worlds oddities who both computers on more than one screen and watches TV or listens to radio 4 at the same time.... (I've been known to sew/knit, read and watchtv/listentor4 all at once as well....)
Andnow you've all gone all quiet :-(
doohickey discussion is tiring?
See what happens when you discourage those wonderful "FIRST" comments *jokes* :-)
Watching Red Dwarf. Loving the Blade Runner stuff.
Whilst not full of belly laughs, I enjoyed the 1st two, have yet to watch the final part so far
Halfway through second episode now, with the last one following immediately
I'm surprised to hear that the doohickey is rather stressful for you two. Personally I have a problem sometimes, the usual Could Not Post/Preview Comment but all you have to do is try it again. I used to always use the lclt because it's more organised but with the lclt, sometimes when I went to a new thread/topic, it said that the comments couldn't be found, and it happened quite a bit really.
So, I prefer the doohickey now. :P
smart car!!!
From yesterday's conversation:
Me too, a huge boon in my book
the problem is... i think. if you read back through a bunch of recent threads in ye olde comments, many of them don't make a heap of sense.
the reason is the conversation had jumped between threads in doohickey. it felt natural as it happened, but as the conversation is permanent (eg. it's not an msn chat that vanishes into the either when you shut the window), it needs to make sense to anyone reading back in one year or ten years time.
You can save msn convos automatically. :P
I guess you won't be able to see any surgeries. I worked in a hospital for 16 years and every so often we would get a work order to do some painting in the O.R. or even paint the whole OR department out. I got to see a few operations and I must say the blood never bothered me but when the surgeon is working on a patients knee with a saw, the smell of of burning bone is an odor that never really goes away.
