Today is Tom Walkinshaw's birthday, and if you're like me and feel like it's a familiar name without recollecting why - he's a racer/team manager. Mr Walkinshaw purchased the Arrows team and bought Damon Hill on board and together they scored a podium. Meanwhile, here are some of the more up to date things we're talking about:
- Of course the main topic of conversation is Mercedes, and we have a breakout thread for that very subject. Plus, our excellent guest writer Stuart offered up a fascinating insight into what might be going on in terms of driver selection.
- As we have very little new information to go on with the Mercedes deal, let's look at other teams. Mr C turned his attention to another team on the grid, and how they might be aligning themselves in the future. Joe, though, wrote a post with a mention of Franck. It's mean to get my hopes up about the lovely Frenchman, but I like FKM getting column inches.
- It was a story from last week, but F1 Wolf has looked into the story of the potential GP in the Czech Republic in much more detail. Wolf looks at the potential area of the track, and some background of the organisers.
That's all for now. Make sure you let us know how Tuesday is working out for you, and I will see you in the comments.
Not only is it Walkie's birthday today, it's also mine! :D
Ali - the address on my PayPal thing was wrong! Can you cancel that payment so I can set it as the right one and then try again? Soz. :(
Happy birthday!
Ali - the address on my PayPal thing was wrong! {Comment #3}
I'll try. Payment has reached me, but if you want to have it recorded as being from elsewhere, I'll do my best to sort it accordingly.
Is there not a way to send it back and then for me to re-send it?
Further to my last comment, I've sent Scott a refund so that he can try again from the correct e-mail.
I meant my actual home address but thanks :)
Is there not a way to send it back and then for me to re-send it? {Comment #6}
Turns out there is. I've simply never needed to do that and didn't know at the time that Paypal was capable of understanding the concept of a refund.
Scott, check your e-mail.
Got it. Try sending the invoice again. :)
I realised that the address this payment would regard, as in my home address, was my old one. My new one is on there but it wasn't selected as my default for some reason. I tried to change it at the last minute but it was too late!
It shouldn't matter though because there are no physical goods
hello sidepodpeople.
why is everybody in the past? :P
Mr C put us there by talking about MCM.
Hi Guille
I think sidepodtime
wow, he also has the power to travel in time?!?! :D
oops.
Ali:
Thanks :)
and I'm also going backward and forward in time... ;-)
right. I'm off to bed. night!
night chris
adios!
Night.
I'm trying to get an early night... before 1am that is. I've woken up a bit though so it isn't working.
Must finish my beer before I go
Night Chris
Night Chris
Morning folks.
I see you already read Alan Henry's article. Looks like Button and Goddard has had enough of Brawn's reminders. Their bluff was called and they didn't wanna look like they'd cave in, so they committed to their bluff. I suspect it's the kind of question he'll be asked when his career ends: "Jenson, do you regret leaving Brawn and Mercedes, a team you won your championship for, to move to McLaren?"
Maurice Hamilton's article (also in The Guardian):
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/nov/17/jenson-button-downside-lewis-hamilton-mclaren
JA also believes Alan Henry, or at least takes the article seriously:
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/11/is-button-being-pushed-out-or-is-he-playing-the-game-wrong/
Looks like the Guardian at least is convinced that this is goig to happen. I wonder if Button will be smart enough to take his own engineers with him.
Joe also said that Henry is rarely wrong about McLaren
If I were an engineer, who would I trust, Jenson Button or Ross Brawn?
Nuff said.
Is the Guardian considered a reputable source?
Indeed so.
Guardian's OK, but Alan Henry and Maurice Hamilton are about as good as F1 journalists as you'll ever get.
night :-)
I hope there was something else, because if it was just that it would be incredibly stu$$$...
It can go the other way around if he manages to beat Lewis (I don't think so). Either way it will be the turning point of his career...
Alan Henry is as is Maurice Hamilton. Joe says Henry knows what is what at McLaren
Fair enough then. I guess we look forward to the morning (your time) for confirmations.
if he is leaving the team for money? that's not very kind of him... ;-)
Well Button has form on that score.
It will be interesting to see when McLaren confirm. It will also be interesting to see what Kimi does now
I don't see McLaren as the type who pirate senior folks from other teams regularly. The last major engineering acquisitions they had were from Williams in the late 90s/early 2000s with Newey, Lowe and company.
If Alonso wasn't able to bring his engineers with him, what chance does Button have of doing the same?
It will be interesting to see when McLaren confirm and it will also be interesting to see what Kimi does next.
Alan Henry is sure enough to publish it, but not sure enough to remove the word "could". I think McLaren will announce at the end of the week.
As for Kimi, it's quite simple - he leaves F1 for rallying. He could go to Mercedes, but as JA says, I doubt it...
less now that Lewis IS the first driver, not the rookie
Alonso's engineers didn't move but that may have been his choice, their choice or McLaren's choice. Jenson is particularly close to his engineers and would be crazy to go into the lion's den without his own guys.
excellent point.
We shall see. Andrew Shovlin would be the prime candidate to move, I guess?
Shov and Bono I assume
If Ron is getting involved in the F1 team (albeit not in a regular basis) as we were leaded to believe from the last weeks, maybe McLaren started to go out from Kimi's mind already. But I wouldn't discard Brawn so easily, he wanted a winning car and Brawn (aka Mercedes) will have it next year. He can go rallying in 2011 with a new WDC...
I just hope Lou won't be too gutted. :( I'm a bit disappointed Button did this, to be honest.
She was not very happier ealier
I don't think she saw the AH-JS-JA articles yet though. That makes this story tons more credible.
I am a bit surprised both sides let it happen. Does it show that Button is not that highly prized as a driver?
If that is that case, and I hate to say this, Mclaren may be wanting him just as a solid #2.
As Phil Huff of BrackleyF1 (which I think will be their new site name) said in one of his posts earlier, the economic realities are such that Ross can only pay so much without detracting from the budget spent on the car. And we know Ross will prioritize developing the car over paying for a driver. It's not that they don't value Button enough, it's that it's all he can really pay for.
Perhaps that question should now be asked of Mercedes, who control the purse strings.
I don't think so. If McLaren hire him, it's with the full respect of a World Champion. That said, so is Lewis Hamilton. Jenson will have a mountain to climb, to say the least.
I won't believe it until I'll see the McLaren press release. But yeah, if Ross had let go Button that easily (6m pounds?) it says a lot (I'm not surprised, even if I rate Button as a very good driver, I won't put him at the same level than Lewis, Alonso, Kimi, or even Massa)
dan, are you still around?
ah, maybe not. if you do wander back along, could we run your earlier comment as a guest post in the morning please? it's insightful stuff.
am off back to bed now, but just say yes/no in the comments or via [email protected]
cheers and night all.
night
Night.
Night Mr C
Night Mr C.
Watching old F1 races now. Be back in a bit. :)
did I ever mention how much I like VirtualBox? :-)
In the words of Kimi.
Yeah.... for sure.
To make it fit a blog post. I can do a bit of a rewrite.
Brilliant idea. Send it to Mr C when you're done. :)
*reads news*
Oh no!
*hides under blanket*
Mmm. Indeed so. and Lady Snowcat hasn't even seen this yet.
You can share a blanket with Lou. She is not happy either
Share it with Lady Snowcat and Amy too...
at least her driver is still in F1
Mine and both of Amys seem less and less likely
We will soon be back to 8 people on a bed
:)
I did try to point out that her driver will start next season in what most people expect to be the best car and it will have a number one on its nose but that is not much consolation apparently.
I've used this as an excuse to make do my first proper blog post
http://pardonthefrench.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/the-off-season-transfers-and-jenson-button/
...Not when your teammate is Lewis Hamilton and you left what would probably be a competitive team anyway.
And unfortunately I must depart now. I'll be back later. See y'all.
Bye Sean
And Amy just has to visit me this winter. Both Finns and maybe both Mikas are planning to drive in the arctic rally
bye
I don;t think it is a particularly clever decision to go to McLaren but as Kathi pointed out he has a good drive at least. Kimi is in limbo.
You think you are going to get Amy to go out into the Arctic. Once she lands in Helsinki and realises there are so many Finns around she will blow a fuse
Silly Finn.
Agreed. He should not have left Ferrari without signing a McLaren contract first
I suspect Kimi isn't too concerned whatever happens, which may be why he didn't prioritize a McLaren deal. For Kimi, it's not the end of the world if he doesn't get a McLaren seat; he feels there's other things he can do.
That's what I think he's thinking anyway.
may be, but ask him the day all the cars line up for 2010 Bahrain GP and he is not there knowing he is better that 70% of the guys who will be there ...
And I'm back.
hi to those arriving!
I'm leaving to bed. g'night!
Nighty night.
Night
i find it amusing that I am just as angry as Lou but for the completely opposite reason. Its not the kimi thing that annoys me, its that I dont like jenson and i dont want him at my team.
I'm just sad :(
As it's Tom Walkinshaw's birthday today, here are some tidbits about him:
1. He runs TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), but it's now known as Walkinshaw Performance.
2. TWR used to run Jaguars in the old World Sportscar Championship in the late 1980s. One of his engineers was Ross Brawn, who had come from F1 and Williams.
3. He eventually moved shop to Benetton, as the technical mind to Flavio's commercial mind. Among others, he brought Brawn with him back to F1.
4. After tasting championship success in 1994 with Benetton, he bought 50% of the recently-acquired Ligier team from Flav for 1995, which ran on Benetton aero that year.
5. He then suddenly moved out of Ligier when he acquired Footwork on his own in 1996, eventually restoring it to its former name of Arrows for 1997 and beyond (which, as Christine mentioned, ran Damon Hill in 1997).
6. He was then caught up in that controversial mess with Phoenix trying to acquire the Prost assets at the start of 2002. Some were saying it was an attempt by Walkinshaw to have the Prost prize money for his team, which was now becoming beleaguered with financial problems.
7. Soon enough, Arrows did close midway through 2002, never to return. Its assets, including its Leafield factory, were sold off to what would eventually become the Super Aguri F1 team.
8. As for Walkinshaw himself, he was somewhat discredited by the Phoenix-Arrows mess, but could've come out of it a lot worse. He's currently running a V8 Supercar team in Australia with Holden cars.
im sad about kimi and annoyed about jenson. I might suspend my mclaren membership until he goes away.
You did say you were a team fan first and foremost - that's about to be tested now...
tweet McLaren, maybe they listen to you.
I think thats a very good idea. If I had mclaren membership I'm sure I'd do the same.
don't they have perks for your GP visits, though?
only perk is the pit visit and i have already had one so dont expect another for a while. I like racing line and they are discontinuing it. I like the membership pack but they are rather hit or miss. I am signed up until at least october anyway.
so, I watched the F1 classicon Star Spots last night, the 94 AUS GP. It is amazing how horrible the TV coverage used to be :-) But what was even worse were Slater and Yoong pretending they are live commenting the 15 year old F1 race ... They really did their best to make sure next week I mute the sound for whatever race comes up
I just made an idiot of myself by saying my dream team next year was Mercedes with Jenson and Nick. I cannot see that it has been announced that Jenson is joining McLaren (I can understand the logic from both Mercedes and Jenson's point). How much truth is there in the rumour?
McLaren is going to be the team to beat and I think their closest competitor will be Red Bull and not Mercedes (nee Brawn). Not sure how Ferrari will stack up - they got it rather horribly wrong this season (comparatively speaking).
Morning all.
I saw some comments yesterday on The Feeder Series, so I'll add my two cents in.
Firstly, to me, racing is racing. If it's good then I'll watch it. I don't care if it's kids or unknowns driving spec racers, if it's entertaining, I'll watch it. Perfect example: last night I watched the A1GP from the Algarve from last Easter. It was all of the above and yet it was terrific fun. It seems a bit of a shame to only watch F1 and ignore this stuff when it's so enjoyable.
Secondly, about following careers. I think this is the other reason to watch the lower formulae - it is great to see the young kid come good. Since I saw him destroy the field in the A1GP round in NZ I attended, I have been closely following Nico Hülkenberg and I must say, he really deserves a chance in F1. But instead of all of these unknown kids getting into F1, by following the Feeder Series you get to know them before they become famous, which gives them a bit of history and makes you want to support them more.
Thirdly, about Live Timing. Yes, it's brilliant to have, but it shouldn't detract or distract from the racing. I love having Live commenting, timing, tweets and telemetry during a Grand Prix, but if the action is good on the track, I don't pay much attention to the other stuff. What I am saying is, if you need all these things to watch a race then surely the on-track action needs to be improved?
Finally, about Jenson and the story from the Guardian. I will reserve full comment until it's confirmed, but I am disappointed to hear that it's serious. McLaren never have made things equal and he will be walking into a trap - even if he is better than Lewis (who I think is a totally different kind of driver) then he won't be allowed to show it...
Hehehe. :D And the worst part of it all was, they STILL got their facts wrong. Unfortunately, the engine sounds are just way too good to mute. I'll just zone out Slater and Yoong... I'm hoping that for the later races (1998? 2000?), they'll just use the ACTUAL commentary work Slater did at the time, not a redubbed one now.
Hmm, the old BBC clips this year were very good!
Absolutely agree on this. I like to keep my motorsports nice and varied.
I don't think McLaren purposely don't make things equal, but I will say this: some drivers are more equal than others...
For the record, the next race is the 1994 Brazilian GP. Don't ask me why they're showing it out of sequence...
The real difference is that I think Lewis will drive whatever car and extract top performance (as does Fernando and um, slightly surprisingly Felipe - except when it is wet). Jenson is a bit sensitive to car set-up. The worst for Jenson is Rubens was (I think co-operative), Lewis I think is altogether a more competitive individual and that might harm Jenson's chances.
If Jenson signed for Macca - did he do it for the money or the opportunity?
How we wish we had those on our TVs instead...
I had no chance to see, but what I saw last night was bad editing and camera movements were making me seasick at times :-) still, good to go back 15 years and watch a race with Mansell, Berger and Brundle on podium, Hakkinen crashing out in Peugeot powered RedWhite McLaren, Lotus racing for the last time (ok, no longer true perhaps) etc ... What have I missed ? oh, the Hill Schumacher thingy :-)
I think more for the money than the opportunity, but a bit of both. How can Brawn's smarts plus Merc's money not be competitive?
I showed you how to do it and you didn't want to!
they aren't brawn anymore - they are mercedes GP
Morning all!
I finally finished my blog post about Brawn/Mercedes...
Are we not making the same mistake as we did with the other Manufacturers when we assume this will be a super team? Or is it different because it's Ross Brawn?
it would be great if they showed classic races in full...
Does anyone think Nick will be at Brawn? I am really sad that both Jenson and Rubens are unlikely to be at the Brawn factory.
it will depend if Mercedes want to move to Germany...
Link please!
He was referring to Ross Brawn
it may be different because:
a) Merc is not Toyota
b) Brawn has turned the team into rather neat and efficient operation a year ahead of the rest of the big spenders
c) and yes, there is Ross Brawn
now they need good driver line up
@ Gavin Brown (RubberGoat): - may I bother you with that wave invite you offered last week ?
Who are their logical choices? Kimi has said only Macca and looks (if rumours be true) locked out. Would Mercedes pay for his services?
Yeah sure dude! Can you send me your email address (publicly or privately) and you'll get it...
will DM your twitter
Lewis, was this what you were talking about last night? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/wiltshire/8363502.stm
They will not move the operation to Germany - I cannot see them having an all German outfit!
I re-consider, just supposing the Mercedes (nee Brawn) is seriously competitive and both Nico and Nick are driving and they win races (even the championship) I guess Mercedes could say then they made them into race winners and get lots of advertising as neither have yet won a race.
money money money money money money money
Sounds a bit like ABBA
all the things Jenson could do, if he had a little money. (like his dry cleaning)
Our bandwidth is iffy right now. More importantly, it won't be in TV-clear resolution, like it is right now. ;)
I did notice how this was all hung out like dirty laundry for the world to see (paying for his own flights)
I can't pinpoint the moment I went from liking him to disliking him but I'm sure that a lot of it wasn't his fault. That didn't help though.
So you do not like Jenson anymore? I would have sooooo liked a Jenson Nick combo, or Rubens Nick combo.
It's a rich man's world.
Oh dear, looks like I'll be making another cover song if he does sign for McLaren!
I haven't liked Jenson for the majority of the year.
all talk on Button, but what has happened to that first driver Lotus signed over the weekend ?
I hope the pun was unintended. OK I will be honest the Brawn Magic seems to have got lost Barichello Button Brawn I am dissapointed.
Erm, isn't it the next line in the chorus?
Is there a reason - I so admire you for your defense of Kovy.
I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Ain't it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
That's too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a fast white Brawn
I wouldn't have to moan at all, I'd drive around and have a ball
Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world
A Brawn like that is hard to find but I can't get it off my mind
Ain't it sad
And if it happens to be free I bet it wouldn't fancy me
That's too bad
So I must leave, I'll have to go
Go down Woking, then Monaco
And win with Macca in a race, my life will never be the same...
Really? I disliked him last year, grew to like him this year. If he changes teams for money though, he's no better than the 'old' Jenson was...
Never mind him - what happened to the British GP?!
Too true.
What did I miss?
You MUST sing this now!
over the weekend they signed a driver, they haven't bothered to announce whom :-)
I'm a lyricist, not a singer. :D :D :D
Waiting til the Button Mclaren announcements die down to maximise their publicity?
And Journeyer, you HAVE to record that. :D
Oh yeah, forgot to mention NZ qualified for the World Cup! My dad went and said the atmosphere was incredible!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8360167.stm
He's always come across to me as not very humble - one of the "I'm a F1 star and I have lots of money so I am going to have girls and boats and cars and you will LOVE ME" types. That may be because of that reputation from 10 years ago, I have a bad habit of not letting first impressions go.
I think it just really, really bugged me this year that all of a sudden everyone decided he was the best driver on the grid and they'd always thought that they'd just never thought to mention it before. That's the part that I think wasn't his fault.
Even though he won the championship he never elevated himself above 'mediocre' in my eyes like I thought prior to this year. Now that he's coming to my team, I think that's why I'm unhappy. Because I still think hes mediocre, and I think they could do better.
I'm happy that they got their, but I think they got lucky.
1. You got dominated in the first leg but got a draw.
2. Penalty save.
3. We left oceania
4. You didn't draw a South American playoff like we did twice.
But all that aside, I'm happy for you.
Morning all
@see75 on twitter (who claims to be "now Jake Humphrey's unofficial twitter PA") says Jenson is on the verge of an 18million deal with "Mclarlen"!
In fact she first said 18 million deck.
I don't know where she got this, from the radio? Thin air?
alternate reality?
appears she also said mclarlen
Hah - Typical Australian reaction!
Yeah, that was lucky. Kinda hard to play in that heat though!
Bahrain apparently celebrated scoring BEFORE they took the penalty! Madness!
And still qualifed right? Well done, but Asia isn't much stronger apart from a couple of teams...
We might have had an easier shot this time, judging by the quality of the South American teams!
I think it's great that they're allowing the smaller nations more chance to get in - it develops the game better!
this is why celebrities shouldn't reply to us normal folk. One reply and some think the acknowledgement makes them friends.
They don't reply, generally!
I wouldn't either, if you do a search for what people are writing to almost all of them, the majority is creepy.
Yeah, Dave Gorman blogged about it - very scary!
it's just i couldn't see where she got this from initially. I know where now.
oh and the 18 million seems to have come from 3 years x 6 million.
That's too high if it's true. Nobody in Resource Restrictions is worth that much!
I mean we left Oceania which let you get through. I was using our departure as a reason for how you got lucky. ;)
And yeah, we qualified. It's easier to qualify from Asia. We went for I think it was 6 qualifiers without even conceding...
What do you think Kimi is asking for? I doubt he is asking for less than that.
it's a high price for mediocrity ;)
RG!!!!! Glock confirmed at Manor
Montagny for the second Renault seat? He must be the favorite now, surely?
http://bit.ly/2SAT6W
Hopefully. Then at least one person will be happy about next year's driver line-ups.
I think Glock is better than that to be honest.
Too darn true. Mind you, I wouldn't mind Baguette getting the seat. All those puns... :D
so where would you like to see him?
me too. Must be nice to have a confirmed seat though. #stupid2010
true, Trulli to Lotus would not suprise but why on earth has Glock the desire to return to the back of the grid with Manor when he could have done the same with Renault
I don't know, but the new teams are hardly going to be challenging for anything, even for podiums. I think that Glock deserves to be somewhere like Renault.
But Renault weren't all that great in the last two years. Why should they be better next year?
like the slowest of existing teams instead of slowest of the newcomers ? :-)
+1
I like Jenson, but the way you express yourself I have no way to counter-argue!
Exactly. Renault will do better than Manor.
my next question is where is Heikki? :(
Morning all.
um I guess there is real uncertainty at Renault or Joe is right they will re-brand in blue.
I'm sure Heikki will get a drive somewhere.
Morning.
Notus announced they signed their first driver roughly at the same time Heikki got finally kicked out of McLaren by the agreement with Button. Therefore obviously Heikki will driver for Notus.
*drive
Possibly to Renault unless they go Blue - Timo or Heikki? Two nice guys, I feel Timo is a little more racy based on this year's results.
well, as long as I can still rock my Heikki hat and Heikki shirt next year :D
He could be teamed up with Jarno - who despite the spat with Sutil is, I think, a nice guy. I think they will be the best of the four newcomers.
Manor and USF1 look to be a bit radical in the way they are doing things - I mean gambling on shortcuts.
I like Jarno, even if I do doubt his sanity after toting all those photos around :D
Lets hope Heikki has a nice team mate next year.
someone should totally sign Henri Karjalainen
That's very harsh.
O-M-G!!!!

Sorry but...
Has anyone seen this yet?...
http://pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=39572
Not that anyone will actually give a ......
Just been reading in the paper that Eddie Jordan thinks an all german team (mercedes) and an all British team (mclaren) is a good thing!
we care, we care, we even discussed it a little!
"we care, we care, we even discussed it a little!"
Sorry Amy I guess it's just that I don't....
KIMI :(
That's my second favourite driver - have to say I thought he could have done better than a car designed in virtual cyber-space without benefit of a wind tunnel.
Feeling depressed...
Looking at a season next year when all I will be doing is hoping people fail....
I think I shall get ulcers....
I do a lot of that most years, it's always nice when they do.
I begin to feel that only thing that will remain the same for next season will be the red Bridgestone caps ...
Well I do - along with a few others. He's decent and yet to show his true talents.
Oh, and a few of us have boycotted Pitpass due to a certain badly written article and their subsequent defending of it in an equally tasteless manner...
"That's my second favourite driver - have to say I thought he could have done better than a car designed in virtual cyber-space without benefit of a wind tunnel"
Rich...
What is about anonymous Germans that really appeals to you?....
How sad. I look for people to succeed and am pleased when they do.
I care enough to have created a breakout thread.
Pinger still on hols?
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/17/glock-confirmed-at-manor-gp/
I am generally an "Always look on the bright side" type...
Just not feeling at all that way today?....
Morning everyone :)
You need the Kimi love. As soon as he is confirmed you will be as right as rain...
I do that too. Of course I do. But there's always a couple I don't like. Ralf was one.
Morning Alex. How goes it?
It goes well... Today is so far a better day than yesterday which was altogether too Thursday for my liking.
I also got given a lucazade alert plus at the train station this morning. It was quite weird. It said on the back of it that you are only allowed 1 per day! I've never seen that on a drink before!
Did you drink it?
Complete stab in the dark here. Anybody know anything about Pitlane Magazine?
A fanzine or professional outfit? The WHOIS info suggest the former rather than the latter?
Yes. It was weird. It didn't really taste of anything.
Just catching up on overnight comments. It's very interesting that the new daily seemed to wipe out the desire to write about Mercedes in the breakout thread. Must give that some thought.
Are you more alert?
Oh right. Well that's OK I guess... I didn't like Ralf after he left Williams.
I definitely had a Thursday yesterday :(
This in itself deserves a post of its own!!! No need for accompanying text, just the comic in and of itself. :D
So you want to celebrate a cartoon that lampoons the ripping off of copywrite material by... reposting the cartoon on another site without... hold on ;)
Um... I think so...
:)
Get Fourstar to do random stuff discreetly and see if you notice it...
The website also says it's not suitable for Under 16s!
This sounds like a scary drink.
Sounds like Red Bull?
Hmm... How do I tell him without becoming extra aware?
It's quite scary!
It's just Lucozade with a larger dose of caffeine in it, innit?
Sounds like fun!
Mmm. They seem to be making a big thing of not having taurine in, though. So, kind of anti-Red Bull.
Kathi's Heikki-to-Notus theory may be correct. Joe thinks it'll be Glock-di Grassi at Virgin.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/di-grassi-and-glock-at-virgingp/
Or... Kovalainen might just return to Renault.
:D Oops.
Morning everyone.
Morning Lukeh.
Wolfie,
Invite sent sir!
it has 120mg of caffine in it versus 80mg in Red Bull. And it has less liquid to dilute it. I think Red Bull do some shot thing too though.
Thanks a lot !
They've all jumped on the shot bandwagon now. Even I won't touch them with a barge pole.
Yes... I'm not sure I should have. I have just had 500ml of Orange Juice to try and dilute my caffine.
Why not? Red Bull is my saviour on some days. 5am starts are a killer!
They cost more than the largest of large cans, and contain the same amount of caffeine in them. No point in these 'shots' unless you are either a driver or need to claim back 60 seconds of your life somehow.
Cool. I enjoy the whole can anyways, so that'll do me fine. God bless the Germans and their relaxed attitude to Energy Drinks!
In NZ the maximum allowed caffeine in 500ml energy drinks is 160mg . The shots get around this by being sold as 'dietary supplements' which have no restrictions, so some have 200mg+. That's way too much!
Morning all...
Im leaving... on a jet plane... dont know when I'll be back again...
Awww. Take care, Nick. :)
It's only been an hour and it's gone from sunny shinyness shining into my room to cold rainy wetness being generally cold already. Crazy welsh weather.
Are you singing? Where are you off to?
AUTOSPORT's Edd Straw: Button closing on McLaren switch
FTA:
Boo.
I hear Frank Williams has had a bust up with Hulk Hog-I mean, Nico Hiulkenberg and now there is a spare seat at Williams and Jenson wants to go there instead
*gets rumour starts*
:P
Didn't Button test-drive a McLaren when he won the BRDC Young Driver Award? If memory serves me right, that was in 1998.
send it to gmm.
I have a picture of it. He looks about 12. I laughed.
They're already making it up probably
Just a thought:
Jenson and Lewis
John and Anthony
Jessica and THAT WOMAN
Wow, can they all coexist in the same garage?!
They will put tyres between them ;)
:D
More like a full-on wall.
oh lord, it'll have it's own feed. Might replace the onboard.
HAHAHA! :D
Eerytime it shows Jessica you'll see THAT woman coincedentually hovering into the camera view
Nooooooo...! THAT WOMAN better not spoil our view of Jessica.
Dubai :D
First review I've seen of F1 2009 on the Wii comes from IGN
http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/104/1046039p1.html
He can't win, can he? £4 Million is peanuts for a World Champion at a factory team, yet if he moves it's for the money and he's disloyal?
Wait, it's not internet-enabled?
No. Only Split screen multiplayer on a single console.
Wow. The only reason I was going to buy that was to play with you guys. Major Fail.
Friend codes FTW
He should move...
I think he has a house in surrey anyways :P
And no safety cars?!!
the Friend Code system is utterly rubbish but I can't see why they couldn't have made it work. perhaps the Wii is incapable of handling 20 cars online at the same time.
how many does mario kart allow?
12 players as far as I know.
12, I guess.
So does that mean the SPC MarioKart Wii tourney is back on then?
money probably plays important role. but frankly, what is there anything else he can achieve in that team ? he won their first race, he won title there, he experienced 2 seasons as serious backmarker, he missed Monaco GP as a part of 2 race ban in 2005 ... time to move on. and good team offers the seat ... how would majority of people react ? surely the majority would say "thank you, I do not want 3 mil more" :-) yea, right ...
So when does the F1 game come out? Friday?
But he's moving into a losing situation. Even Alonso couldn't beat Hamilton, which was largely down to the team itself...
Yep. Mine's already in processing for delivery, woo!
thats the thing. If he was moving to a team that paid him more where he has a chance, good on him, but it comes across that hes moving to a team for more money where he knows he'll never be able to win another title.
that we will see. he may be moving to losing situation, but he may also feel he has the opportunity to prove that his title was not an accident. and remember, there is no refueling next year, cars will be heavy and tyres will suffer. Hamilton is not exactly famous for being nice to the rubber ...
Mclaren is like ferrari... Fisi gave up a winning seat for 5 races as a red backmarker... Jenson has a chance to go to Mclaren and be competitive... If they give him a good car he will be every bit as good.
The problems with alonso centered around alonso, i think they will get on fine
But if he loses out, the naysayers will say he only won because of the car, he's not worthy etc and I don't want to see that happen!
well, and there is also that possibility that Brawn Silver Arrow Mercedes may not really want to keep him ...
that probably is the risk he thinks is worth taking
if BUT really moves to MAC that would mean 1-2 cars MAC, 3-4 MERC, 5-6 RB, total reshuffle of first three garages
huh, why?
BUT would take number one to MAC I believe
no they won't move garages. Ferrari were in garage 1 with numbers 3 and 4 this year ;)
OK, my bad :-)
why do mercedes get three/four? or is it only the number one driver who takes his number?
No worries. This is how they line up ;)
Mercedes: 3 & 4
Red Bull: 5 & 6
McLaren: 1 & 2
Yes. Fernando took number 1 to McLaren in 2007.
so garage order would be:
- mercedes
- red bull
- mclaren
and number order would be:
- mclaren 1/2
- mercedes 3/4
- red bull 5/6
if so, that is stupidly confusing. i like nascar numbering.
judging from 2007, Alonso went to MAC and Renault was left with 3-4
So do I. Most teams keep their number and a lot of drivers too - 3, 18, 20, 24, 43, 99 etc...
yea, they better keep that Red Bull between to silver teams or some of the drivers may do Jaime :-)
Yep :) anyone know what numbers the new teams get i.e the order?
ask Gavin, he will make up the numbers :-)
Lewis is always number 1 in that case ;)
hehe. mclaren will be mirrored silver so mercedes a darker grey i guess?
do we know if mercedes care about sponsorship, or are they bankrolling the whole thing?
How about drivers being given numbers based on their championship position the previous year?
Although in the 2 wheel categories, the number staying with the rider helps. I always know Rossi is 46 in MotoGP and Noriyuki Haga always seems to take 41 in Superbikes.
this is how the current teams should line up.
- mercedes 3/4
- red bull 5/6
- mclaren 1/2
- ferrari 7/8
- williams 9/10
- renault 11/12
- force india 14/15
- toro rosso 16/17
then the new teams. no idea how thats decided.
I think everybody cares about sponsorship these, why pay if someone else is willing to do it :-)
Q: What about commercial sponsors?
DZ: The only thing we can say is that a number of discussions are underway which are promising.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80175
... and this logic they are applying to Button as well ...
ahh groovy.
they may be forced to at least run a little colour then.
When the FIA announcements pop up: Car number x under investigation I would never know who it is. I can just about remember the team order from last year
may be not, look at Williams, always blue (if we forget those few winfield red seasons)
I can what does that say about me?
damnit :)
i'll just be happy that the bright yellow is gone for good then...
#sorrylukeh
From that, I would suggest that Nico isn't set in concrete and he really didn't know where he would be driving when asked a few weeks ago...
I know this is off the current topic, but do they refuel during the races in GP2?
No - two tyre change only and only the feature race.
The drivers having their own unique number during their F1 career looks more appealing when you said that.
it would make more sense if charlie just put drivers full names up there.
it's not like they don't have space.
you get the impression they're being deliberately unhelpful.
I blame the Schumachers, just because I can.
because their name is too long?
they are making us knowledgable types look more smarter :-)
Nooo, I prefer it this way. Sound more official/formal/right
because there is more than one.
but unhelpful to armchair fans?
ahh. you raise a good point.
#blameralf
they have commentators that can tell them
:D leggard?
if you win, the money will follow. but just because you get paid more means you win more... which is why ultimately, staying at merc was probably the better thing to do.
also, some are saying brawn did up its amount to £8 Million or more - even Mr Brundle (or his ghostwriter) said as much.
Morning all
not strictly true. it's atleast 2, more drivers only change 2 because its quicker.
i guess.
*most
I liked this reply from JA to one of his commentors who compared Lewis getting 18 million to Button getting 3:
First of all, the Hamilton deal was done pre-credit crunch. Second it’s not £3m, it’s more than that. He has the capability of getting serious millions if he realises the performance clauses. I think the problem may be that they feel Mercedes on board = splash the cash and Mercedes don’t see it that way.
James Allen: The Problem for Kimi Raikkonen
Very interesting insight. JA also thinks Ross may have asked his old friends at Ferrari about Kimi and didn't like what he heard...
Yeah you're right. Sorry about that!
Are you James's RSS feed now too? ;)
to be fair, no one ever changes all 4 tyres (unless they've had an aweful stint and destroyed them)
the only reason i know is listening to a gp2 lewham interview ages ago when he mensioned it
just left a voicemail for the next debrief :)
Yay!
A more reliable one than the site itself. ;) :D
Indeed sir!
Morning all.
I had a very bizarre conversation with Vodafone customer service this morning. I very briefly outlined the problems that have afflicted my BB Storm since it installed the most recent firmware update; summarised my general feelings about the product ("It wasn't a very good phone anyway, and now it's completely useless…"); and asked if there was any way of reverting it to the previous software version.
The bloke said, "We'll send you a replacement phone tomorrow…"
Is that good or bad?
Well, can't really complain with that. Unless they try to charge you for it I guess...
From Chris's comment on Joe's GMM post
http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/2009-11-17/
Joe linked to a site I have never come across before that you may find interesting
http://runoffarea.co.uk/
Joe linked to that? Define "interesting"?
Well, the BlackBerry Storm is a basket case. It has been a PR and customer relations disaster for Vodafone, to the extent that they're allowing people to buy themselves out of their contract. The replacement will be every bit as awful as its predecessor, but so long as I don't let it suck in any more buggy firmware updates it may survive to the end of the contract, after which I'll take a hammer and a chisel and bash it into tiny pieces.
On the other hand, the call centre may have been located abroad. The fellow asked what phone I used to have, so I hope he hasn't misunderstood my request to revert to the previous software. We'll see when either a BlackBerry or a Nokia turns up...
It's tagline is "More accurate than Planet-F1". It is basically a Giggles Made-up Media site
I knew Lewis was lying
It's a satirical site
Vodafone should be carrying the motorola Droid at some point i expect, as they have it exclusively in the US... that looks like an awesome phone!
!! Lie-gate 2.0!
Amusingly, he (privately) declared it to be utterly useless, I'm told by a reliable snout. He doesn't use one.
The viral ad in question moved me to laugh bitterly, because the BB Storm's motion detection set-up is so laughably inept that you can go away and make a cup of tea while you wait for the screen to realign.
Only 13 months to go on my BB Storm contract. I'll be counting every one...
I don't understand why Vodafone hasn't launched McLaren phones since 2007.
Uh oh. 'Satire'.
The failure of the Storm, which was supposed to be the iPhone-killer, may have had something to do with that. It is basically so awful that they have pulled right back from marketing it. They're now trying to get going again with a Mk2 version.
the Storm wasn't VMM branded like these ones though was it?
i don't get their sense of humour at all.
Well maybe they can do some ads about how good the buttons are now :D
No. McLaren staff were due to be issued with Storms earlier this year, so as to be seen with them, perhaps with a view to doing a fully VMM-branded edition at some point. Won't happen now.
ahh ok.
I think i saw one of the 5th drivers tweets coming from an android platform?
I think Vodaphone will be able to distribute iphones soon....
where did joe link to this site? am just looking around now, it's a load of old c***.
Maybe so. The fact that Vodafone are now rolling out a Mk2 Storm indicates that the flaws of the original have been known for some time (and, furthermore, that the only way of curing them was to junk the Mk1 and start again). It's mucked up any hopes of an integrated marketing strategy in 2009.
maybe button wanted a free one?
I felt like it needed canned laughter, or a picture of Arthur Bostrom, or something.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/di-grassi-and-glock-at-virgingp/
Irvine misled over Virgin job
I think he just did it to wind up the GMM brigade and I found that funny.
Ooh, a non-English version of F1 Racing is available digitally. Not pdf or searchable, so don't look Mr C.
http://gb.zinio.com/browse/publications/index.jsp?productId=500317208
Another F1 2009 review, this time from Gamesmaster magazine - They gave it 69%
Summary - Whilst it's official and authentic and does the job, the limitations of the Wii and lack of analogue control hinder it.
ahh. joe didn't link to that post.
wordpress did.
that is an automatically generated link.
Don't you go sitting on that fence now!
Second thing I do on a new blog is switch them off.
#F12009
Also, another review this time from Eurogamer. Personally consider Eurogamer better than anyone else on the web for review, they gave it 8/10
Bit of a mixed bag then really, most of the review so far seem more annoyed at the graphics than the game itself
:D
Wordpress can fo that?
just reading the posts on the front page. i'd like to think i have a pretty good sense of humour. i haven't smiled once.
Several of those present also suffered temporary blindness. Unconfirmed reports suggest that one member of the crowd had to have his arm amputated after suffering a severe allergic reaction to the livery.
W.T.F?
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/17/quality-above-all-else/
Hmf. Does this mean I'll have to buy an Xbox? #wrathofwife
it's optional for anyone using wordpress.com. if you allow it, your posts get linked on other relevant blogs too.
i don't think the author has a say in the selection process though.
Am confused. There was already a ping?
Must admit, I gave it a glance once and never returned again. Tries too hard to be funny and fails completely.
well that one won't be out for another 8 or 9 months so there's no rush :P
i like the subtitle. they shoulda stopped there :)
Mm. If I remember, I like to do it as well for non-doohickey users and for posterity.
I still maintain the actual pinger pings in the wrong place.
Mrs C was sharing the new post to those in the daily I assumed
Gud moning...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/elsa11/313114904/
you are correct. i just haven't had time to sort it out..
ah ok. non-doohickey users? who are they ;) :P
Brawn will be first in the garage line up regardless... and they'll have the 3 and 4 numbers if Jense leaves...
This was the position in 2007... Renault were first in the garage and had numbers 3 and 4 as Teflonso had left....
Then
Macca with 1 and 2...
Red Bull 5 and 6
Ferrari 7 and 8
etc, etc
I know. New stuff is more important than dodgy pinger. Not complaining, just explaining.
You need to have that as a motto
we haven't got racecar engineering yet. we should do that.
hehe!
That reminds me. Did you (or anyone else) sign up for their three issue freebie in the summer? I logged in today and to my surprise, my account is still up running, with all the RCE issues from August to the present ready for my perusal.
Free wifi!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/8364159.stm
Oooh, nice. More towns and cities need this!
Mine next!
i didn't. does that mean you've got a free month?
that's warmer than finland. just.
was trying to work out how they were funding it, but:
so windows users only?
did you have to put your credit card details in? if you did it may turn out not to be free
Looks that way. Two free issues in fact. Which is a nice result. Be even nicer if I understood 90% of the content though.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80182
council tax?
Mr C likes to pretend he can.
Oooh!! Hopefully Ross Brawn will take over
but...how many Finns in Swindon?
do you guys just look at the pictures too?
gosh, its after midnight so i'd better go to bed or wednesday will turn into another monday. #lateforwork
could be. it says it's for "residents" so presumably people passing through are not invited?
oi!
Night.
*runs* hey wait *stops*
thats what i do :D
oh.
i read all the f1 coverage.
i read bits and pieces, mostly sports car and tc stuff
Did you see Kathi's comment early this morning about you visiting her in Finland to go watch Finns rallying?
more f1 rocks in 2010:
"We’re planning to have five or six F1 Rocks events next year and because of the promotional exposure we can give to acts, we already have tons of artists who are speaking to us and who want to be involved in the shows..."
http://www.musicweek.com/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=1039182&c=1
The footage from those shows was broadcast in 172 territories worldwide, helping principal sponsors LG Electronics and the Singapore Tourism Board to benefit from an estimated broadcast value in excess of $47 million (£28.3m).
Not to be sniffed at!
So today is not a Thursday!
I have just been to see a Tugboat which is parked next to the office as it's just been built - it was Discovery channel big!
Very cool, all new and flash, smelt like a new car, and I got to sit in the captain's chair!
F1 Rocks is an excellent idea. Long may it continue.
As for LDM leaving FOTA, it makes sense. The Concorde Agreement has been signed (for now), so there won't be much movement in that area for the next year. That'll start moving again in 2011... For now, either Brawn or Whitmarsh should take over the lead role.
How many Star Trek lines did you do? Captain's log?
Ah loads!
For all your budding GMM needs, google has improve google translate: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/new-look-for-google-translate.html
#MFC
After Joe plugged it recently there were some requests for more tweets from GMM should you happen to know the people behind it.
http://twitter.com/gmmf1
of note, the top three promoted stories on f1-live are editorial, and not assigned to any agency. could be coincidental of course.
Hey guys, having a nice day out for my birthday. Just had a meal which was a nice piece of fillet steak and wedges followed by chocolate cake and ice cream. Well and truly stuffed and now just about to head back home. :P
Mmm, cake.
It was a big piece as well :P
#MFC: Intel have made some kind of portable text to speech reader. Very costly at £1000 though!
Hehe. Happy birthday! Apologies for not putting it in the daily. I am rrrrubbish at keeping an eye on that birthday list.
Happy Birthday Scott!
Tillykke med fødselsdagen!
Thanks. Don't worry about it, it's no big deal. :)
Happy birthday, Scott!
Happy birthday sir
Thanks guys :)
christmas songs? on radio 2? in november?
Happy birthday!
Mmm. Cake.
have a fine old day, old man.
;)
The Coca Cola adverts have been seen on TV too
we've had them since october. ;)
You're evil.
i thought there was some ind of bbc limitation that said "not before december"?
hehe. i'm just jealous he's not older than me.
Someone's obviously scribbled it out and put November ;)
I find it infuriating when I see Christmas ads on TV before my birthday (in Oct)
Right. No time to waste. Major panic cleaning going on over here......
My wife calls me that all the time. She's 8 years older than me!
Yeah but ads on the BBC since when?
Katherine is 5 years older than me. But I'm not sensible enough to be referred to as old
I'm sure he means the songs.
Ooh. Lewis Hamilton is doing the Foreword for the F1 Yearbook 09-10... was expecting Ross Brawn myself.
Always the highlight of my Christmas getting that book :D
Mmm. I've kinda been turned off from the Yearbook - too many editing errors inside for my taste. I prefer Autocourse.
Random Pet Shop Boys lyric of the day (blame iTunes):
"Stop this caprice, you've got to cease..."
Hehehe, thank you sir ;)
A friend just asked if the book I wanted had a foreword by Lewis...
Nooooooo.......
Then I realised it was the wrong book.....
I can't believe how many people I've had defensively respond to ym criticism of christmas avderts/music already!
I've just read one of my assingments and this is what it says:
Design and manipulate 7 web pages by using Adobe Firework CS3 and Adobe Flash CS3 and export them to HTML format. Your website will be about producing a new Xbox game.
We've been told thats all we are allowed to use :(
What is your course?
easy. although the pages will be inaccessible to those with disabilities, invisible to search engines and the project largely pointless. but it's not really a challenge is it?
And the lack of challenge is the worst part.
ahh i see.
I think he was complaining that it was rubbish in total.
I would hate to do that project.
depends. if you get marks for it and can pass in about 20mins, that's good isn't it?
I'd love my assignments to be like that! :P
I don't know. I don't like doing boring things / things I don't see a point in.
I have a report on the roles of Marshals in the Motorsport industry, in for 25th January? Fancy it? ;)
oooh *sticks hand up*
I just finished a report about hte nightclub industry....yes....on a motorsport course.
grrr
That's what formal education is, isn't it?
fact.
Yes... I dropped out of University for exactly this reason :)
everything up to but not including degrees i think
they're the same, no?
No I;d go with absolutely EVERYTHING.
Hmm. Would that nightclub report help you in the motorsport industry?
no i meant that generally up to a degree is boring meaningless stuff, but degree stuff should be relevent, its not always, but it should be
Although I did enjoy doing my A Level english coursework on Cool Runnings...
i didnt say degree assignments are relevant, just that they should be
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!!?!?
that would be like the best assignment ever
That is the argument, isn't it?
That formal education isn't relevant.
i see no difference? christine was right the first time.
:D
In my A Level I did one on Futurama, and my main one in A2 was Cool Runnings.
In fact I really enjoyed my English Language course!
hmm i see your point. some of it isnt relevant, but not all
ah! but although it wasn't relevant it was used to teach me using various mintel resources etc plus writing reports. but im not sure my course is a good example as it's basically just a-levels again, grrrr
That's what I was told... It turns out that quite a few University degrees are like that too.
Still trying to drill people with information as though people need to learn things by rote any more. And not allowing people to go and explore information. A fear of Wikipedia, for example, is a great example. People are banned from using it. When actually it's a great example of where you can learn the difference between correctly and incorrectly sourced material. The ability to research is key rather than being spoon fed - it seems to me.
feel free to give examples...
:0
:)
Don't know what that was - typo
It would help you find the journalists
so what experience are you basing you argument on then?
Welsh
*shudders*
:)
:P
ok so my next assignments are....
1) report on role of marshalls in the motorsport industry
2) presentation on "Discuss the use of psychological skills techniques in enhancing driver performance. "
3) ‘Explain the physiological impact of performance driving on the cardiovascular system’.
they are relevant. kinda
am confused?
Those sound much more like fun
I work with computers.
I have no qualifications to work with computers.
This, I think, is interesting.
you don't have to have a degree to do a job, you just need experience of that job. im doing this degree so i can get a degree to do a pgce, if i get a job from it at hte end (if im still here at hte end) then thats great, if i enjoy it ill stick with it, if not then ill do a pgce. simples
to me that sounds par for the course. i don't know many people who do a job which matches the degree they took countless years before.
Some education will be relevant and some will be enjoyable but this is more by luck than judgement.
Formal education doesn't account for the vast variety of work there is available and the even vaster ways in which people learn.
To be honest I seriously doubt I'll be doing a computing job after my computing course
I did once derive the length of the hypotenuse in my job, but only because my boss at the time wanted to know how much tile he needed to buy for a home project. I think I probably used my maths A-level (or probably just the GCSE) for that. But I'm not sure it would be considered a relevant qualification ;)
you haven't convinced me that a degree is any different from any other form of education, sadly.
maybe you haven't convinced yourself either?
i think if you research it hard enough, and talk to people on said course before you start you can work out what its going to be like.
if you want to work for a specific job, then you should go for that specific job and learn those skill sets, if you are interested in a certain field then do that instead, thats what im doing.
I work with numbers and I couldn't begin to tell you how to do that.
BSC Computing. the module is "creative computing" :D
I was. and I do along with everyone else.
Hey, everyone on my Computing course thinks it;s rubbish too! :D
As far as I can tell even a masters isn't that different. A Doctorate on the other hand is really different. My friend, Dr Nick Ollivere, over on SofaF1 has a doctorate.
He said he wanted to study a doctorate and they say, "what on", and you kind of come up with some ideas, and then you go off and write a book and then come back and they say, "yeah that sounds about right", or not. That's very much self-directed learning.
"Would that nightclub report help you in the motorsport industry?"
Have you not been to the Amber Lounge?....
So far, the best kind of education I've seen is an Open University Open Degree where you can select whatever modules you like as long as the points add up.
I am still confident that a good percentage would be boring and not worth the time spent on it.
square both sides you know. Add them together. Then square root the total and that's the other side.
Hmm must be a common theme with computing courses.
Of course.
Silly me.
Eh-hem.
didn't know that. interesting.
it is different in that you are spoon fed it in gcse/alevel but degree level is more about self work etc, although not fully as proff giggles says about a doctorate.
you put university down as the education bit, its not just about that, its about learning other skills sets too, about life and the universe etc etc etc.
for me, i am a bad example because i am not doing a degree to try and get to a particular job after it, i am doing a degree because i want to teach and i cant get a teaching job without a degree. i would be doing a teaching degree if i hadnt had the couple of years i had, at the end of august my options were motorsport or have a gap year, and i didnt want to have a gap year. i kinda fell into this one
:D
i call that "the pub".
I think the doctorate sounds good because you can go and say, "hey what do you think about this bit", and they'll point you in the right direction. But of course you have to want to be deep into something. I'm a shallow and wide kind of a guy.
i'm suspicious most people do a degree, to avoid getting a job in the first place.
indeed. you get my point though
haha thats very true.
which is why you can't cook ;)
hehehe. love it.
During lessons or from being away from home?
i don't need to know how to cook.
being away from home, although clearly not everyone does that. my point being that its not just about the education bit
i think your original point is invalid and that a degree is also about boring and irrelevant stuff.
I wanted to work, and my parents wanted me to go to university because they were worried I wouldn't be able to get a job without a degree. I pointed out this was madness as I would be actually rejecting a job offer to go and get the degree. But I went, which was totally the wrong thing to do.
All I've learnt about uni is C++ sucks.
of course, your not going to only do fun stuff, some stuff you wont get on with and some stuff you will
It's the only thing keeping sales of Chaucer alive.
Okay. I'm specifically talking about the education bit. I learnt all that other stuff by just leaving home. Works just as well.
i coulda told you that in less than 10 seconds :)
For you thats great, but i know many many people who wouldnt be able to do that, it would completely freak them out.
3 years of my life!!
I should point my lecturer loves C++ ;)
I was only kidding. Moving away from home and going to university are tied up in a lot of peoples minds. Hence the life lessons.
Weirdly a lot of people don't move out and go and get jobs, they stay at home and get jobs. I stopped living at home when I was 18 and could never go back. Even though I love my parents living together wouldn't be great.
Not if education actually taught you useful stuff, it wouldn't.
I once wrote an essay on the theory of comedy, using a Bernard Manning joke as an example.
I'll be revisiting this subject in my next short story for the Bulletin...
#sorrylukeh
Ours do too, but Im 99% sure C++ is the cause of global warming and the economic financial madness. Tis evil.
education wont teach you how to look after yourself
Gah... im leaving the country and im not even close to ready...
#funfact...If mclaren hadnt been peanalised Lewis's first 3 seasons in F1 would have seen him race with cars 1,2 & 3
hear hear!
It should. I can't think of anything more compulsory than that.
it's not evil. it's there are more relevant things you should be learning.
such as? :P
See, they have said that over the past year or two, and have admitted that C++ isnt ideal for us now but they still put it in their modules constantly. Bit annoying really.
it dosent though. my best friend is an example, he was completely unindependant in everyway, and now he's at uni its a big step, but not as big as if he'd have left home and had to completely fend for himself. plus your surrounded by people as equally innept at looking after yourself
Interesting thought, and this isn't a specific dig at Mr C. But why doesn't every kid get taught how to cook at school? We get taught, after a fashion, how to exercise, but not to provide for ourselves. The reason. Because education was designed to teach men in the 1800s and they didn't need to know how to cook. It's inertia and nothing more.
i got taught how to cook at school, i did it for 3 years.
well. things that pay and are in demand. off the top of my head:
- sql
- java
- javascript / html / css
- .net
- cloud computing
- scripting languages such as php / perl
True enough, I can cook a sponge though
#uselessresponseoftheday
You can cook a sponge?
Ah like a cake... right... sorry... I was thinking bath time.
Fact.
My neighbours, who are students, are incapable of even putting their bins out. I imagine them shambling home from the pub on bin night, passing every house with its bin at the end of the drive, then reaching their own house and thinking, "Oh, that's not my job. Someone else will do it."
Bake a sponge, do the oven thing, whatever! :P
there's should be a lesson on pizza packaging.
This is normally snobbery rather than anything else. We must teach a "proper" programming language.
I did it because I knew I'd be rubbish at metalwork.
hehe... you used to live next to me? :P
ooh thats my biggest bug bear in my flat. im always the one who has to take out bins and recycling. tres annoying
I did it for two. GCSE Food Technologies ;)
i heard turbo pascal ROCKS!
I won "Best at Food Tech in Year 9" award when i was...in year 9....
They didn't tell me thats what i was winning...i didnt find out until i was in front of a 500 parents and students. boo
Two years and then ended up doing woodwork for my GCSE's. Awesome stuff that.
Afternoon.
What I want to know is, what is SQL the sequel to? #unseenprequels
Woop woop
Afternoon mr g
And if his earlier education taught him useful things he would be much more prepared for life no matter what came next, rather than leaving school and instantly forgetting how to do trigonometry, for example.
:D
he's doing an astrophysics degree so he'll probably need that ;) but i get your point. its all well and good saying they should teach that, but a) they dont, and b) you should let people work some stuff out by getting it wrong
Until they do start teaching sensible and useful things, I stand by my argument that formal education is both boring and a waste of time.
You get to wave some certificates around, it opens some doors and then the real learning begins. Crazy.
Actually, if the number of graduates without jobs to go to is anything to go by, it doesn't even open doors.
You also throw a hat in the air at the end of it and wear a silly globe
seconded.
oops, silly gown. Not sure where globe came from.
and those graduates are the ones who think that a degree will get you a job end of. silly people
Throwing and catching = quite useful.
i did wonder where this globe was to be warn
(unless you want to be a painter and decorator, like lou)
Don't...
Delphi is the way forward!
Someone called? ;)
:D
helloooooo
*waves*
;)
ahh yes. proper language.
it should be mandatory before each year begins, for educators to find out what jobs are available and teach those subjects first and foremost.
One day i will be able to catch Rubens hat when he throws it into a crowd/the sea if it's at Singapore, and think back...
...Uni sure did help me out....
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1322095
anyone else think that he is sitting way to high up?
its the guy who won a test through the young driver thing a few years ago, they clearly gave him a booster seat to help him see out the car
*salutes*
+1
If his tweets are anything to go by, I appear to have riled Mr Runoff with my comments about his website earlier. Oops.
huh?
hahaha. i wondered who it was that said those various things. he also said your a silly billy for still following him
#Today's feedback: "Tries too hard to be funny, and fails completely." Huzzah!
#Incidentally, the person who wrote that follows this feed. Strange....
Its boring?
I think going to uni completly changed the ways i am able to think... And i am able to work far more effectivly because of that.
Having said that, i did learn a lot of useless stuff in the process of gaining those skills
His head is above the line between the roll hoops. Bad McLaren
oh right.
i guess my feedback wasn't quotable?
same
ah yes well...that too
You can't hide from Google these days.
I don't think Uni is a waste of time but I do agree that you begin learning as soon as you begin working in the real world. To me uni is just the final door before a stairway of experience to climb.
I understand that, but I'm talking subject matter.
Goodness... are you going to work for Ron?
surely it depends hugely on what subject your doing then
oops. in that case, constructive feedback for mr. runoff...
be more funny
kthanxbye
Hey, cliches are awesome.
And a traffic spike, too. As Mr Update-F1 decided after his critical mauling, any publicity is good publicity.
Mm, I don't think so.
Thing is, you're going to be a teacher, so I'm not sure we'll ever get anywhere with this discussion!!
Ah yes... The philosophy i learned is pretty usefull, and i do have a good knowledge of various governement power structures...but some stuff...
For example I can draw you a big chart of international organisations, and outline the problems they have due to the divorce between stakeholders and the membership?
But that isnt really going to help me in most jobs :P
It made me think of that funny jewelled egg thing that plays Stairway to Heaven – always advertised in TV Quick.
Education for education purposes isnt going to be everyones cup of tea. fact.
Lets leave it at that :)
infact, if you go into an interview offering to tell them waht they are doing wrong....am 90% sure you WONT get that job ;)
I think at this juncture it's worth anyone who is interested in education having a listen to what Sir Ken Robinson says. His argument is that schools in their current form kill creativity and worries that we are teaching children the wrong things. Why? Because the things we teach were deisgned for an age that has passed, but now that is considered "right"...
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html
Note to self... Wow you've seen a lot of TED talks!
:)
will watch tonight.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/sussex/8362671.stm
woooow
i would agree with that 100%
That is a big problem in this country and it goes way beyond education. Too many people are looking over their shoulders to the past to decide what is right rather than looking to the future. Huge amounts of state money are spent rebuilding old building of various types but if anyone tries to do anything modern the planning people cripple them. You can look at almost any aspect of life and the British general opinion is based on the past rather than the future.
What I do say on the creativity front is that it's incredibly important and schools will never be truly helpful in this front, however it's also up to the parents and the students themselves to be creative in their own way. When school dosent do it, you have to do it yourselves. All my creativity was drained out of me when i had to write a report and couldnt use the first person at all. However my creativity comes from writing and making stuff. So i got myself a blog, i write alot, i write alot of stuff thats not on my blog, i made a podcast, i research things, I use the opportunitys and skils i have to develop my creativity and skills in other areas.
I think its important that schools change, but i think its equally important that we change too.
He makes a point about kids not being allowed to get stuff wrong.
I had a very long conversation with a lecturer about that very subject, that both he and I thought it was great and kids should be encouraged to get stuff wrong (as wierd as that sounds)
Well, I can't please everybody....
Do you need to?
When I posted about my assignment earlier I didn't intend on starting a debate on education :)
oh and thanks Mr C. I told everyone what you said about flash, we're going to tell the lecturer next time and see what she says.
aha. bussssted. ;)
i think its really important to make the universitys know whats important to you in a course, and what important for a course you want to get a degree/or not from. we've had meeting upon meeting with our leaders because they just havent grasped what the course needs to be about
sense of humour failure?
what are the chances?
twas interesting.
my complaint wasn't specifically against flash, making websites using only images is bad practice too. text rules.
a combination of images + flash is just a disaster in my opinion. presumably adobe have put money into the project? ask if you can use silverslight instead :)
we have a few issues with the lecturer in question. our group is very vocal on the course we complain a lot to our tutor :)
awesome!
Agreed as someone who loves web this unit is putting a downer on our actual web unit. Considering we have the same lecturer. I dare not ask simply because I'd have to explain what Silverlight is to her, only to be told that I can't use it.
This is the rest of the task: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/task-docx
Its tom walkinshaws b-day today? Its mine too
I hear Montagany is in line for a Renault drive, Is that a party I see at Spc HQ
hey kimster. happy birthday old man ;)
it's scott's today too and you're both younger than me :(
Oooh, happy birthday Scott and Kimster.
We have a sudden outburst of birthdays. Happy Birthday
We have to stop this epidemic before it spreads!!
I think we will all hear Christine scream if Franck gets the Renault drive
I will scream if Kimi gets a drive next season, which is getting more and more unlikely with every hour that passes
He's only started talks with Renault. To be honest it would be great if he did. The man deserves a break in his career and while he raced for Super Aguri, that car never did his skills justice. If the R30's a decent car next year, he should be able to show his worth and give Kubica something to think about.
Have finally wrotten up stuff about Mercedes and Jenson...
http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/curious-case-of-jenson-button/
Clever title, see what you did there :D
Shoulda been Timo.
(Not annoyed, I like him at Manor, good idea)
Just be thankful he has a drive at all!
I am off to play xbox but if you guys want to join my quiz at Pitlane fanatic 2moro I would be delighted.
cya guys
Yeah thats one more drive than Kimi has atm
are you secretly four years old? that spec is laughable.
He was always going to get one.
hi everyone.
is anything confirmed yet?
Bless 'im. James Allen hasn't quite grasped this Internet malarkey yet has he?
Vote for your top 5 drivers.
Come again? Do what now?
yup. timo has a drive.
Timo to Manor, ahhh.
And time for me to blog it as well
am staggered his website responded...
Absolutely nothing has been said about Jenson since you've been gone... *whistles*
i got a text earlier saying that :) tis great news for Timo.. and manor. nothing about Jenson...
if you've all been mean about him i don't really care... atm i just want something confirmed so i can either celebrate or get used to it.
nothing. sorry :(
:(
Oh I know. We were told we would be programming some sort of game, once the module started was when we found out we weren't.
It is exactly this that makes me lose motivation.
No, not mean at all, just the fact that it's looking ever more likely he'll be in a McLaren for possibly the next 3 years if it goes ahead.
if that happens i just hope Kimi gets a drive too. i would hate for him not to be on the grid because Jenson makes the wrong decision.
dont worry, i got told i was doing a Motorsport degree...turns out im not
Apparently one of Joe's compatriots, Alan Henry, first told of the deal. According to Joe on his blog, Alan is rarely ever wrong when it comes to McLaren news.
i think you just gotta trust that Jenson makes the right decision, for him.
hadn't thought of that.
Hi Lou
No confirmation yet but a lot of journalists believe it is only a short time before it is confirmed
Right now I'd rather do your degree. I'm dreading doing web technologies.
I think I should blog about this rather than keep on in the comments about how bad it is.
He wants them written as a comment?
are you watching this?
http://microsoftpdc.com/
that is your web technology education right there. free of charge and you don't have to leave the house.
aahhh, moaning IS fun ;) :)
But if it turns out to be just about how much money he wanted, he'll kick himself if McLaren do bad next season (if that is actually where he's going) and the works Merc effort are successful. If he was loyal, he'd stick with Brawn/Merc no matter what paycheck he got offered. If it's all just about money, which I can understand as he just wants to go back to what he was earning when he was a Honda driver, that'll kinda make me lose a bit of respect for him.
Maybe at the Autosport show one of us should ask him "So Jenson, did you do it for the money - yes or no?". I guarentee you wouldn't get a straight answer from him.
its his decision. just trust him.
Mr C I ♥ you.
I just want to say this lecturer also teaches us Multi Tasking Systems, she isn't too good at that either.
she's a woman, how can she not be?
Harsh. The lecturer who taught me OOP last year was a women and she was good ;)
wasn't meant to be. i mean women are better multi-taskers.
Of course it's his decision. You can put a price on a drive in an F1 car, but you can't buy loyalty. It has to be earned. If Jenson truly was loyal to Brawn/Merc, he would have done what he could to stay there. If it meant accepting just £4m, then so be it. But if the move is all just about the money, which I think it is, then my opinion of him will go down a fraction.
ah. I completly miss read it. #sorrymrc
tis okay. at least you didn't hit me.
that happens sometimes.
Jenson could have stayed where he was if he wanted too.
Teams almost always struggle with the year after their championship. fact. Brawn won last year. They may struggle. he's not been that stupid
Did you find out anything about it?
I wouldn't do that :)
I think I may purposefully over do my assignment, just so I can do something I'll enjoy.
No you can't. But that doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up, nor go all cryptic on Twitter to try and get folk to try and massage your ego.
You've had two people criticise your work, man up and plough on with what you're doing.
was just asked the same on twitter. where was this original comment?
He stayed with them and took a substantial cut last year. He then delivered a championship which no doubt got Brawn a load more money from Mercedes and now they don't want to pay him as a world champion. Why should he be loyal? He gave up a load of money last year because the company had none and they want to take advantage now they have.
Dank asked earlier today.
9:14am
Nope. Well, just this: http://easily.co.uk/index.php3
And the first person they followed on Twitter was: http://twitter.com/Steve_Sport_F1 (usually first person is the person's real persona - not in this case!)
I got an e-mail a few weeks ago from someone I had never heard of asking if I would write some stuff for a new online fan produced magazine. I have no idea ifthis is it or not.
ahh. never saw it sorry. i can answer though.
someone asked on facebook if we would plug it, and i believe the answer was yes we would.
i don't think it's being pulled together by an f1 insider, but they seem nice enough and have done decent research before contacting us (which is a rarity).
however, as with anything like this, it depends entirely on the quality of the writers. which at the moment is an unknown.
Who is he and who said what?
There's plenty of good writers about. Eh Steven?
it also depends on where the writers choose to source their news :)
I have noticed one or two around.
#GMM
Runs a website that claims to be a 'satrical' look at F1. Except, Mr C and I said we didn't find it particularly funny so doesn't fill its objectives.
Whilst I concede I could have perhaps worded it a little bit better, I still stand by my opinion. Some might find it funny, some not.
I think it is a good idea for a site but it is not Giggles Made-up Media standard
Shouldn't this be all going on in the Daily?
am gonna move it all later.
have conceded that's the only thing to do. otherwise we'll spend forever, moaning at people.
Apologies for distracting from Timo
#sidepodspace
microsoft will later be talking geek with nasa about getting data back from the moon.
http://microsoftpdc.com/
I watched the speeches from Chinese premier Hu and Barack Obama in Beijing late last night. One of the things they agreed is that they would work together in space. I don't know if that is the start f an international lunar program
Jenson's thoughts on moving to Macca might actually be based on which car will give him the best chance to defend his title. It might be to answer critics who still feel he is not deserving of the championship (e.g. Briatore). It might be a three-year contract at a salary that as a world champion he should be earning. Possibly as Brawn has been bought out it is no longer the team he won his championship with. If by moving to Macca Jenson finds success and the recognition I think he deserves I will be happy.
I may be going off my head here but isn't there a website called womble of the bol or something like that?
If Briatore really thinks that about Jenson that's just one more reason I should smack him if I were ever to meet him.
You are on the right lines. BOL or Le BOL posts comments here and eventually started posting as various members of his family and pets including the Wombat of the BOL.
He has given all that up and now posts as FOFA(Formula One Fans Association)
Nothing to do with us
Ah cheers Steven
I am glad someone else thinks the same. I get a bit upset by all the criticism about Jenson not being as good as so and so. For me was driver of the year because the first part of the season is as valid as the last part of the season.
He passed, like, a bajillion people in Brazil. If that wasn't a championship worthy drive, I don't know what would be.
Hello.
Woah! BBCF1 just went mad for me
evening Pat
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/bbcf1-png
big fonts are big
I spent 5 years at University doing a course I enjoyed only to graduate and start right at the bottom.
It's a piece of paper to help push your CV to the top of the pile. The rest is up to you. You might learn some life lessons, but that's it.
(By the way, when I started said job I had to convince everyone I knew how to use the Microsoft Office Suite of products - I taught myself and by the third month was bluffing my way into getting other people to ask me for help!)
(Another note, I am a Data Analyst, and I do little other than very basic Excel Math. Anyone could do my job!)
My new favourite Twitter account: http://twitter.com/feral_pigeon
BON-oh wait.
I have a guy in my group who thinks he can do my job.
I get to spend a lot of time fixing the stuff that he does that I should have been the one to do in the first place.
I am a lecturer and one of my approaches is to liaise with the linked industry to ensure we are providing the skills that are actually required in the workplace. This is done by doing a lot of in-house training for the industry and our facilities are used by the industry for their own in-house training in exchange our students can attend these courses with their employees. It is a win-win situation.
#sorrylou :(
Rfactor makes my laptop feel poor and rubbish... I wish I had a pc able to run this.... it's so purdy and awesome!
So did I. I said yes.
true story ;)
Just found them on Facebook. I'm intrigued...
oooh Mr Andronov...
That video earlier from that guy. AMAZING.
Also another one i found. Tis inspiring stuff
Apologies to all for derailing the thread. Put it down to "having a bad day."
that's crazy!
They followed me on Twitter.
My PC is 3 and a half years old and can just run rFactor. However, that mod is pants - there is a better 2009 Mod coming...
with no other information? seems a bit rash :)
I know nuzzin about rfactor mods!
glad you liked it.
It's a great talk. I also would be interested in anyone's thoughts on the Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder) talk from this morning. Lots of #MFC in there
Blimey. I can run rFactor but nothing like that... at least I think, 'cos I haven't tried it with my newer card, but I don't think so...
I know nothing of rfactor ;)
is something being "pants" good or bad? I take it from what Gavin has said before, that it's "bad". But I always kind or thought pants were a good thing. I mean, just imagine what would happen if I ever showed up to the office without them...
don't worry, it happens on an almost hourly basis :)
It's bad. Of course bad can mean good ;)
Darn crazy foreigners! ;)
:D
You are referring to trousers and us to underpants. Tis a curious phrase though!
On the education talk front from earlier at a crucial moment (just watching it again now) he says, "you were probably steered benignly away from things at school because you'll never get a job doing that. Things you liked."
omg! i've just had a thought... if Jenson moves.. will shov and bono move too??
#sidepodspace
NASA has their astronauts working to an odd work day again. They are waking up around midnight UK time which means on spacewalk days they could be heading out around 4am UK which is the middle ofthe night US. Do they not want anyone to watch?
It even mentions women multi-tasking better.
i can't watch. am following the microsoft stream this evening.
I asked the same question earlier. He is insane if he is not taking them with him. He needs his own guys if he is to take on Lewis. Alonso's big mistakes were under-estimating Lewis and not taking his own people.
Like today's big pic: http://www.f1minute.com/2009/11/17/junior-senior/
Webber gets in some weirdo car.
hmmmm :P
but will mclaren let him?... team button is a strong unit.. he was a mess before it was formed and could possibly be a mess again without them.. on the plus side this could mean Jules is back in the paddock.. protecting Jenson from all the stupid Mclaren PR things they have occasionally done.
Evening all, have just found the BEST twitter app EVER!
http://pic.gd/a81172
For those running Mac System 6 through to OS 9 - Grackle68k :D
Hehehe.
I liked yesterdays, just ended up shouting SAUBER at it.
Did he crash it and break his leg again? That was my prediction
If he crashed that, he dosent deserve to be an F1 driver! ;)
Depends how much they want him. According to the stories they are paying him £18 million over three seasons so letting him have his own engineers is nothing in comparison
He crashed a bike last year
everyboooddy! Move your feet and feet uniiited! Wooooaaooah!
Junior Senior....
I think you need to make a new podcast that is "The Feeder Series to The Feeder Series."
This is true, but that wasn't his fault. If you're going down a hill at that speed you commit to your line before you get into a corner. A car came round it and hit him, theres nothing you can do in that situation
Can I just called it "The Feeder Series's" ? ;)
That's a Danish Band!
FSONE ;)
Do TwitPics embed/pop-up here now?
http://twitpic.com/pwau3
That's the one...
Evening all. Is Jenson a McLaren driver yet? I see Glock has moved to Manor
Doesn't look like it :)
Hi Andy
You might appreciate the Twitter app I found
No one else seems to :(
Dear Mr C...
I tried to listen to that Microsoft thing as long as I could, but it's just like reading RCE....i understand none of it!
Jenson has not been confirmed at McLaren but a lot of credible reporters think it is a done deal
yes.
If Mercedes are taking over from Brawn... then are they classed as a new team? seeing as their name is changing?
i like it!
Hmm, it did in DD's preview
Hurrah! :D
I thought it was just me. He conned me into watching because he said they would be talking to NASA
hehe. it's really geeky.
they're explaining the thought process behind windows 7 support for netbooks.
to summarize. microsoft devs hate them, because they banked on pc's getting faster, not slower. however, they are doing their best.
Not on Chrome (but on a PC shhhhh)
"Jenson has not been confirmed at McLaren but a lot of credible reporters think it is a done deal"
And many are in mourning at the very thought....
Technically yes but the other teams will unanimously agree so it will change nothing
Now I just need to find me and old PowerBook 100
Wait... did that even connect to the interwebz?
am aware of chrome issues. will sort and add support for more sites soon.
Right because I got in trouble for not plugging earlier from Janna (this may be my flimsiest excuse ever)... Here is a short story that I have just published on my blog: http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2009/11/half.html
Pah!
You should have been hear very early this morning. Kathi sounded like she was going to organise a wake and invite Lou, Amy and you
Pah!
Safari FTW too
i want to be able to write storys like that!
my problem is that its been drilled into me that storys must have a set beginning middle and end, but they really dont, at all.
I would appreciate it more if I had something to run it on. It is rather cool though.
I got half way through it then left ;)
:D :D :D
Makes me want a Newton ;)
Now who'd have thought it?
I've got two original Macs in the loft. Well original form factor. One is original the other had the upgraded 512k of memory!
Is it some sort of M$ anti-Moore's Law?
iMac G3s? What colour are they?
What were we saying earlier about formal education stopping creativity...
...when in your real honest to goodness life has there ever been a clean beginning middle and end to anything?
apple objective-c is getting a proper slating though.
Half a Meg, wow. Like, totally futuristic
Who could EVER use that much capacity?
LALALALALALA can't hear you. :D
i can write other stuff, just not storys.
true story. literally ;)
No no... The beige numbers...
So they can make the OS even more bloated? I may not be an Apple man but that doesn't make me an MS fan :-)
Monty Python proved you didn't need that 40 years ago
"You should have been hear very early this morning. Kathi sounded like she was going to organise a wake and invite Lou, Amy and you"
I would be surprised if any other driver on the grid would have such a reaction....
The guy is special and F1 is too full of corporate clones to lose the one free spirit.... not to mention the most naturally talented driver around....
Ooooooo Do they still work?
Really true... Ouch ouch ouch just looking at it.
By the way apple. There's this thing... called garbage collection. If my council can manage your language should be able to.
Exactly.
they banked on really fast graphic processors to handle the aero display.
Oh yes.
:D
I think Lou is more upset about Jenson leaving Brawn but I agree with your comment. Kimi should be in F1 and he should be in a McLaren
C (objective-C, C++) don't do garbage collection my friends. You gotta do it yourself. We're HARDCORE!
I may have to make a video
apple's objective-c does. just not very well.
It's an extension of C, so no wonder it doesn't do it very well :)
Yes... I can also poke my eyes out with sticks. But it turns out that doesn't really help me ;)
Honestly re-implementing garbage collection every time is less efficient unless you are actually writing an operating system.
And were persuaded to lower the minimum spec that was recommended for Vista to keep the hardware manufacturers sweet. What could possibly go wrong with that?
James May on Scalextric now
awesome!!
well... mobile devices aren't really powerful enough to have that extra layer, so i can see why the iphone doesn't have one.
but the desktop version is still a shoddy implementation.
I agree
We have silent children!
Do you think that book of Scalextric circuits was written by Tilke?
Can I come and help? :D
If you think its possible to overtake on scalextric then you may struggle ;)
Or if you're implementing a language. Most people should only know that it exists and maybe have an idea of how the particular language they're using does it.
yeah i am. but i'm sad Kimi wont be at mclaren. Jenson should be at Brawn... Kimi with mclaren.. that's just how it should be!
As I touched on yesterday, not everyone is going to get what they want.
I've said it once and i'll say it again.....Trust him to make the right decision for him
true story.
Mr C: The "new replies" tag in Safari's tab isn't turning off when I activate the doohickey tab
Is this a 4.04 thing or new-site teething issues?
Like I said last night. We are right and reality is wrong
not sure what you mean?
like in chrome
"I think Lou is more upset about Jenson leaving Brawn but I agree with your comment. Kimi should be in F1 and he should be in a McLaren"
Weirdly the idea of Kimi at McLaren seems more right than Lewis there.... can't say quite why.... and it's only when it looks unlikely that it seems wrong that he can't finish his F1 career there....
I have a still working Atari STE in NZ...
yes... but it doesn't make it any easier...
oh, the title? yeah it's been flaky for months hasn't it?
will look into it soon, promise.
My STM 520 worked the last time I tried it.
my point is that HE will have made the decision, if you respect him as much as you do, then trust him to make the decisiion that he wants. that is the right decision
I agree. He will have to lose that silly beard.
OMG!!! they can't make him surely... he looks great with the beard..
name me a mclaren driver, with a beard?
actually, steven probably knows of one.
for lou:

For 6 million a year they an ask pretty much anything
*quickly opens photoshop*
The tab says [10 new] but when I switch to it and start reading, it doesn't disappear or update
yeah and i'm sure it's a great decision, who knows this could be like the honda thing again... however at this precise moment in time the thought of him leaving the team to go to Mclaren (not exactly my favourite team) doesn't exactly bring a smile to my face, whether it's Jenson's decision or not... doesn't make it easier :(
i'd shave for 6 million a year
Nope. Rosberg had a moustache as did Mansell and that is about it
Can I be honest and admit I think it looks silly?
*hides again*
have i said i'm not fond of Mclaren?.. ;)
maybe he's been practising? he didn't have much of a beard at the ROC....
Dunno, I usually use DD
No hurry
I hate to shave for a date once, Alison made me
That's encouraging
have i ever said how much i love Joe?
do you have an orange drill? ;)
"I've said it once and i'll say it again.....Trust him to make the right decision for him"
Sorry but if it means no Kimi then it's the wrong decision all round....
*had to*
Mine's green.
you went on a date with alison too?
people will talk :)
She is very bossy
Or an Orange single button mouse
hehehehehhe :D
twas over skype
#balcony
I asked for that didn't I?
Alison must be the Ron Dennis of SPC
Shave or Die!!! ;)
who goes on a date over skype?
Did John Watson only have his at Penske?
Alison and Bassano apparently
Not Old Skool enough then
She threatened to kill you?
He shaved it when he won his first race didn't he?
very #mfc
Maybe it's a habit :)
I hate saying it, but Microsoft generally make better pointing devices than Apple.
See, a McLaren driver did have a beard
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/mikablessed-jpg
Andy, waddya think of the Magic Mouse?
Yes. Penske wasn't keen on it and Watson did a deal with him saying if he won a race he would shave it off. He won Austria 1975 I think
Mika!
.
.
.
Oh
She's a nun?
cheat!
But quite fictional
Yep. Austria..somewhen
Amazingly I forgot about that beard
I think everyone has just forgot myself :P
It's new. From Lidl. My old drill is Yellow.
That's not difficult. Apple's mice are friggin' TERRIBLE. And I'm typing this on a mac, using a Microsoft Natural keyboard.
alex wrote about it too?
wow
See! I knew it
Citrus drill colours are awesome
Btw who is getting custody of Mika? McLaren or Mercedes?
Your daughter isn't sick, she's a dancer: the video from earlier
#personwhoisobsessed
It's the exception to my previous statement, but I prefer a wired mouse as it doesn't need batteries.
I like the Alu keyboard but the Mighty Mouse doesn't live up to it's name :(
oooooooh.
"Amazingly I forgot about that beard"
It was just a phase....
He'll always be Ron's
Who's paying more?
"Btw who is getting custody of Mika? McLaren or Mercedes?"
Brilliant question....
Ron would be devastated if he lost Mika....
who can forget the time Alonso had one. It got a lot of attention :)
whenever you guys say Mika i think Mike the "singer" and cry
"There can be only one!"
There is only one Mika and that 'singer' doesn not deserve to be called Mika.
He should be called Michael.
or Ralf.
That was too harsh of me
Also, this may have been discussed previously...
Aren't Jenson's & Lewis' driving styles polar opposites?
in many ways, yes.
No, it was spot on
:D
Especially in an Understeer vs Oversteer way
No. They are not exactly compatible but if you put all the styles in a line then Lewis would be at one end with Kimi and Alonso, Kubica and Massa would be at the other. Jenson would be smack in the middle
With oversteer, you don't see the tree that kills you!
Understeer is when you see the tree as you go forwards into it, oversteer is when you go backwards into the tree you didnt see
Therefore oversteer is better
I like that explanation
Right.. back in the airport, another day, another flight.. see you guys at the other end :D
Safe flight!! Have a good one
Scalextric cars now have magnets in them to stick them to the track? I feel my childhood has been ruined.
Transferring? Where are you now?
Didnt they always?
Non magnet went up to 11!!
#itslouder
Have fun Nick
Did Max suggest that?
mine did, it acted as a weight
Had em on my Jag, let it zip around my track in 4 seconds.
Not in my day they didn't.
They have had them for years
yeyyy there are lots of us watching it.
i just remarked to a friend that i now want a kid so i have a legitamate reason to go a scalextrix club
That is ageist. No they didn't
Grooves and electrical contacts FTW
We have some children available, I'm sure we can agree a suitable payment.
They have since I've been alive, and i feel old ;)
Every year I say to the wife "hey, can I get a scalextric set for Ethan (currently 7 years old)".
She always says no.
awesome.
Alonso and Massa are the same. I thought?
she's not stupid, she knows that really means "can i get myself a scalextric set?"
Get an elderly relative to buy it then, preferably one of hers.
Mine had a groove, an electrical contact that never quite worked properly, and a magnet/weight. The newer ones are a bit more fancy i think?
I thought the point of this series was for James May to introduce kids to old toys.
Will they have to shave? ;)
I know. Curse me for marrying a smart woman!
ahaha.
It was originally, but it morphed into a community thing.
Puntuation fail. Alonso, Kubica and Massa are the same
How much can you afford?
£0.01 a day?
plus expenses
ah ok. :)
Provided the expenses come in around £499.99 then you've got a deal. :)
for each child
£500 to look after your kids. im gonna be rich :D
heathrow t3.... that red airline... ;)
No, you don't understand, I mean our expenses.
ah.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! ;)
People get driving lessons on the Brooklands banking?
i doubt they're allowed to get on the whole banking.
I need to rest and relax... today was so insane, even talking to alison would be relaxing in comparison :P
Badoer should enroll
ahahahahahaha. you are so getting beaten
I think it's near the banking. I can't see them letting newbies out on the banking.
The government owns that too?
Hi mic isnt plugged into anything.
Silly james
according to google earth. people park on it during the day.
I feel in danger... this seat doesn't have a saftey card!
Should I take the complimentry lifejacket?
James May Gridwalk!
One more Google Wave invite. Who wants some?
Just remember not to inflate it until you leave the aeroplane.
as in the banking you pointed out before we got on the bus?
they better have good handbrakes!
yeah. cars park at the bottom of it during the day. presumably they to go work in the mercedes building.
Only if you're going to India, apparently
eh ah hoy hoy
I think we were robbed by the lack or his on banking action...
Lukeh, when you're very bored sometime could you photoshop Kimi into a Citroën outfit with lots of Red Bull branding for me so I can practice a bit already.
awww :(
bus on Banking! #blameplane
If I see that I will cry... seriously!
I checked in for this flight on my phone... mfc.
complimentary drinks?
;)
Aww I don't think I will. I tried Jenson with McLaren earlier and couldn't bring myself to save it :(
we approve.
Check out Joe's comment near the bottom of this post http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/well-maybe-jenson-is-going-to-mclaren/
There is still hope
not yet... but its all very red...
you seem to be saying that alot at the moment ;)
Tiff Needel is annoying me...
Jenson? Mclaren? NEVER. I am still in denial stage
A car stopping in an unsavable section of the track? Hello Mr Piquet Jr.
I was a bit concerned about getting the bags though the usb jack, but it all turned out ok...
Luckily his battery has apparently run out.
What I said when Sauber were going, and look
doh!
That is the most aweful chequered flag waving since pele.
please never show that to me.. not until it's time. i'm not ready...
Oh the Aston won. Can't be him.
I have spent weeks saying Kimi would sign for McLaren and Jenson would stay a Brawn. I am prepared to clutch at any straw until I am proved wrong.
<3
remind us what you said about the BGP?
I have spent weeks praying that Kimi goes to Mclaren and Jenson stays as far away from Mclaren as possible, I want a restraining order on him!!
What did I say?
that there would be a management buyout and that they'd be fine?
i think you said it would happen and it would be at silverstone.
i'm not disagreeing on any count. a rosberg/heidfeld lineup is just silly.
Bahrain? Season opener :P
Silverstone has been very quiet..
i shoulda said "british grand prix". sorry.
hasn't it? not good.
Now we have noisy children who can't believe that they have to wait until Christmas for the next James May programme.
I can't help thinking that they cheated a bit with the extra wood and steel supports. The Meccano bridge was almost scuppered when James refused to use non-Meccano parts. Why was that verboten but the Scalextric OK?
I thought you meant Brawn GP not British GP. That will be at Silverstone
I hope Kimi ends up at Merc gp if Jenson is foolish enough to leave Merc.
james allen says "no chance".
Yeah but James allen is a T***
not going to happen #isnotSteven
The track was all scalextric but you can't put Scalextric trak on anything but a flat surface.
maybe... but at least the toys are in the pram. Quiet negociations are probably a lot better than a public spat...
that may be your opinion, but he has good contacts at ferrari.
Who are also T***S
i advise you not to look at this if you are....lou....
but its good photo shopping
http://tinyurl.com/yzvx3z5
Exactly
I have very simple biased opinions, but complex
#thisiswhyididntwanttophotoshopitsodontblameme
that may be your opinion, but ross brawn likely thinks differently.
was he pally with the guy who wasn't liked?
To be honest it isnt Ross that makes the decision.
Mmmmmmmm.
Ferrari tarts.
wise move.. we may have fallen out :P
Just doesn't look right. He had yellow and black last year so maybe red and silver next year
FaceBook link nearly gave me anaphylactic shock
Need a warning in future ;)
"I have spent weeks saying Kimi would sign for McLaren and Jenson would stay a Brawn. I am prepared to clutch at any straw until I am proved wrong."
You have to be right....
Anything has to happening in a parallel universe and I will wake up and it will all have been a horrid nightmare...
eheheh am not looking... lalalalalalalala *i have no idea what it is.. but i assume it's Jenson in a mclaren?*
:D
Merc say it is
not quite
now you're lying to yourself.
People say a lot of things. Tony Blair said they were WMD's in Iraq, people lie
we went to the ferrari store yesterday.. was rubbish!
We are flying... bye!
It's his helmet with all the wrong sponsors on it
his helmet?? it was yellow in tribute to his team right? hopefully he'll feel the need to change it back to it's old awesomeness..
hmmm
don't look!
Yeah, that's great
I changed my planned seating
Airline apps are great
no intending to ;)
That's his job
Yes but is not now an employee of Mercedes?
In my Parallel Universe it can be Nick and Jenson in a Brawn and Kimi and Lewis in Macca and Felipe and Fernando in a Ferrari and Red Bull stays the same.
...umm nico?
And a rather large shareholder of Mercedes GP
Evening all :)
L'Oreal GP after Virgin bails on Manor :)
Hiya. Nothing to see here...
Evening
It wasn't me, they're all liars and meanies, honest
There are an infinite number of parallel universes. so there are many combinations ;)
You only have to slag her off once and she appears.
It was Nick but he just got on a plane
And Badoer is at the back of all of those grids
You mean Piquet could be good in one of them
any other team I do not really care, give him the other Manor seat with Timo cos he will get beaten. I would not mind Kovy with Robert at Renault though - I would like that team.
Anything is possible.
Only once the monkeys have finished the entire works of Shakespeare
There aren't that many.
I was disappointing to hear he's not in the Wii game. I'd never come last if he was!
Nintendo didn't want it to keep crashing
Possibly but NOT in MY UNIVERSE - he can drive NASCAR Toyota Tundras though!
Errm you hav me very worried right now... I'm using my phone and can't scroll down to see what you're talking about! I'm pretty sure i won't be impressed when i get home...
"And Badoer is at the back of all of those grids"
No in Fernando's parallel universe he's his team-mate....
Although Fisi might do almost as well....
#blamenick
You will be very proud of us all...for....umm...holding back
Somebody has to be last in each universe why not make it the same guy for simplicity
In that case. Hello. Have you had a good day?
The universe isn't simple?
Infinity is quite big though and it would be a scary thought.
I said there was nothing to see...
Hehe indeed. I wonder what alternate Sidepodcast is like.
But to understand it you have to simplify so it can be an assumption that is not questioned.
I would imagine that in all the altenative universes MSC is still hated.
judging by stuart comments one that would love quick nick
Now that is a scary thought.
Universal constant
Indeed. imagine one where Media Temple don't fail :)
I don't dare imagine GR hating Timo.
I can agree to that.
I imagine there's one alternate universe where he's loved.... but that's 1 out of an infinite number.
now you are dreaming the impossible!
More likely one where he is mildly disliked.
Oh my god. You're all flocking... What on earth is going on?
Reserved for family and friends plus some Ferrari dudes.
Just another odd day at the farm
I feel progress towards a legitimate hypothesis is being made!
MSC has friends????....
Jean
Fair enough then... I'll just be running along now.
What's up?
Silly question... Just watched the Oprah program she made on Copenhagen. Has anyone else seen it?
Nothing steven :) i'm off on a night out. Just thought i'd say hello. Still slightly scared though :P
RG likes quality shows
Enjoy yourself. No-one said anything bad. Just wining you up. Have fun
Ears are listening.
AUTOSPORT don't have the story yet
And Safari, according to Twitter
Well I only watched it because I was told and I wanted to see what she saw... it was all Bull anyway!
That's what they do best :)
i tried speaking out my ears once....
ended up in a horrible, horrible mess
You mean you couldn't wax lyrically?
I wouldn't say no...
Evening. Sat in a cold Southampton Airport Parkway station.
How are you all?
:D
It's a game of two halves and if you set a poor defensive field it'll take the wind out of your sails.
cheers to kathi for this, will add content in a sec, in the meantime direct your kimi thought's in this direction:
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/17/kimis-manager-says-no-mclaren-drive-for-raikkonen-next-year/
Hi Adie
Is this airport day today?
Ah look, Ron's arrived
Oh dear
I still think he would have prefered to have a drive.
Will read all that later, back to the books...
There are still 2010 seats available
it's been a day of airports. Been to Glasgow and back. Now on the train so we'll see how long the flakey 3G signal lasts on the way home.
Looks like it's been an interesting day in the driver Market
In an alternative reality it could all be Paris' Hilton's fault
Good evening all! How is the world of Sidepdcast on this chilly November evening?
A mix of reassured and confused. Yourself.
not using the new thread?
oops...
i
meh...it was ok. Our drama group (of 6) met up for an extra rehearsal only
to find one couldn't be bothered to turn up. GRRRR
Did no one tell the teams that this is the off season?
I agree!! Can't everyone in F1 just shut up for a day! ;)
We should pick a thread for the Kimi talk, currently two are being used
I believe they close down on December 25th, though don't quote me on that.
if you talk in the daily, you're making more work for me.
just saying ;)
I'm starting to wish that there were no driver moves this year. I think back to last year and we already knew essentially all but a couple.
It's beginning to be unbearable now. Not on here you understand, but some of the forums which are rife with fanboys (and girls!) speculating about absolutely nothing. Hopefully all driver/team decisions will be made soon so I can go into hibernation once again.
its especially bad if you really dont care who goes where ;)
Can you all shoo me, please? Must do some more revision before exam in Thursday! Aaaaaahh 1 day......!!!!
SHOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Oooh, Maths I expect?
Hmm, doohicky just went to sleep on me as I was scrolling up and down the comments.
Thanks, goodnight all!
Night Lewis
night and shoo! ;)
nope, physics and biology...
I will take my Maths next November...
Ah, did those in January. Heh, different schools and all. Night sir.
In other news, Google's Android is taking some flak for being 'fragmented'
http://www.cultofmac.com/report-google-suffering-microsoft-like-headaches-with-fragmented-android-platform/21458
Never mind him - what happened to the British GP?! {Comment #142}
Down the back of the sofa with the old bus tickets and whichever key my placement has managed to lose today, I guess...
Once again, Bernie has demonstrated that his deadlines are meaningless.
The JB helmet mock-up made especially for the MWM forum and linked here earlier, has been tweeted by @F1Scoop, who said: "a source sent it to us"
Dex called him out on it, which I found hilarious :-)
I'd like him to be the teacher where I hand my coursework into.
I havent laughed like that in a very long time
RG!!!!! Glock confirmed at Manor {Comment #166}
It looks like my local team are making some sensible decisions. Timo Glock knows what he's doing and won't disgrace his new team with low performance or prima donna demands. I think he could also blossom into a team leader, even though this element of this repertoire hasn't been tested yet.
OMG!
ahhhh
#note to self: ignore 'phots from little-known sources!
ehehehe
What I liked in the quote was him feeling comfortable in the team and to build the team up. I do not know as much about Timo as Nick but I think he has leadership qualities and he still actually raced better than Jarno (just that qualifying that hurt so badly) this year.
I am liking those words.
Any idea when Android 2.0 is expected to be released? I want free satnav and I want it now!
Motorola's phone has it I think
ok:
- breakout done... check
- homepage updated... check
- comments moved... check
- forgot to say goodnight to christine...
bugger.
busted
Aww :(
Nothing says sorry like a Milky Bar on the pillow in the morning
Can you be busted if she's asleep?
the man speaks sense. do you have a corner shop?
true hehe
The archives say "yes"
Speaking from experience here - yes you can.
Although it'll be more sorry's when she wakes up with it all across her face after rolling over on said miljy bar
*milky bar
Someone will let slip ;)
i'd suggest he put it on her bed side table
I thought miljy bar was a Finnish version ;)
aw :(
grr.
won't be me. i'll have forgotten by tommorow.
i'll be in london again tomorrow so it wont be me...
SHould you not be in school tomorrow?
was on a psychology trip today for lectures. Tomorrow i'm off up to the excel in london for a uni art fair thing... lots of uni info and hopefully i'll come back with a good idea about where i wanna study photography. so i don't actually have any lessons till friday.. lol
Nice of you to do at least one lesson this week :)
Reet, need sleep and to rest that Timo is in F1 next year. Yay. Nice early finish as well, get in.
lotsa love.
Night.
night mr RG
:P well i had one 50min lesson on monday, and due to teacher absence the rest of the day was study periods. Friday is a full day... so 6 x 50min lessons.. fun times :)
night!
Mmm. I've kinda been turned off from the Yearbook - too many editing errors inside for my taste. I prefer Autocourse. {Comment #438}
I will admit that stuff always seems to go a tad astray in the translation from French to English, and 2008-2009 had an unusually high number of non-translation errors, but it's my only chance of the year to get a hardcopy non-English take on the season. As far as I'm concerned, the F1 Racing subscription, supplemented by five Autosports and a Racecar Engineering, summarise 2009 from the English perspective just fine.
That said, if I wasn't so keen on the alternate perspective thing, I'd pick Autocourse over the other offerings as well.
I have a report on the roles of Marshals in the Motorsport industry, in for 25th January? Fancy it? ;) {Comment #452}
Now that sounds like fun!
I just finished a report about hte nightclub industry....yes....on a motorsport course. {Comment #453}
Was the course tutor preparing you in case you got involved in F1 Rocks in your post-degree career? Otherwise I struggle to see what lessons motorsport can learn from nightclubs (other than the importance of ear protection in both).
I don't know. I don't like doing boring things / things I don't see a point in.
That's what formal education is, isn't it? {Comment #454}
Not really. Formal education is something I find really exciting and most of it is useful. Boring and useless things in formal education are the sign of a mediocre (or worse) course design, not something that need be present in formal education.
I learn quite a bit of stuff in most of my classes. Is it immediately useful to my current job? Not all of it. Is it cool neat stuff that I like? Yeah, most of it is.
Crowd control?
nope. we learn that in year 3
to me that sounds par for the course. i don't know many people who do a job which matches the degree they took countless years before. {Comment #486}
I took a degree in information management to become a qualified librarian and then found that, due to changes in the industry, the practically disqualified me from librarianship and people who'd got all their experience in the retail industry were all the rage.
So now I'm trying to get into admin assisting roles, which are theoretically possible with a few GCSEs but in practise require people who are good at business stuff... ...yet I who have never worked in a business am apparently making a better impression at my placement than a bunch of theoretically more experienced volunteer admins. It seems that even relevant experience isn't much help getting a job any more...
its about learning other skills sets too, about life and the universe etc etc etc.
i call that "the pub". {Comment #504}
At my university, me and my (largely teetotaller) friends used to joke that many of our classmates were actually doing a BSc in Drunken Studies and were only handing in assignments and attending exams in their formal subject to attract funding for their education. This was backed up by the rather hefty dropout rate on our course (starting figure 60, end of Year 2 figure 14) and the somewhat alarming tendency on their part to skip lectures, relying on online course notes and some quick tuition from whoever bothered to turn up to class before sitting their exams.
Ironically I did do some stuff in the local pub during my degree. However, I called it "chess class" and I was bad enough at it sober to not attempt to do it drunk!
#F1-non-debatey/slightly-arguey-place
i'm suspicious most people do a degree, to avoid getting a job in the first place. {Comment #506}
The trouble is that once you do A-Levels, you've lost the experience advantage. So after being pushed down that road (which careers advisers seemed very keen on doing when I was at secondary school) all you can really do is try to gain a knowledge advantage and hope, should you want a job eventually at all.
its about learning other skills sets too, about life and the universe etc etc etc.
During lessons or from being away from home? {Comment #511}
Both. And that applies even if you commute from your parent's house like I did.
i need sleep now. *prays this has all been a bad dream* night everyone! xx
night lou.
p.s, i wish they'd all just be quiet too!
hey! that is rude.
shut the browser, or be nice.
you have absolutely no idea what im refering too!
Okay. I'm specifically talking about the education bit. I learnt all that other stuff by just leaving home. Works just as well.
For you thats great, but i know many many people who wouldnt be able to do that, it would completely freak them out. {Comment #521}
Also, lots of people can't afford that until they're in well-paid work these days, at least if the house-price/wage balance is anything like it is where I live. To get a 90% mortgage on a typical 1 bed apartment where I live, I'd need £10000 deposit plus at least £3600 a year just to pay the mortgage. Realistically, that would require a full-time non-entry-level job for about three years prior to buying the house. (I'd suggest renting, but that's £5820 per year for the same quality of house).
The system is stupid, but we're stuck with it :(
in that case apologies if you didn't mean the kimi debate, but you jumped into the daily and said:
"#F1-non-debatey/slightly-arguey-place"
followed by:
p.s, i wish they'd all just be quiet too!
Night Lou
that was because it was getting quite heated from certain partys which seemed quite pointless
that was refering to the rumours that are always going round and round. no-ones knows whos at Mclaren or Mercedes until its confirmed.
education wont teach you how to look after yourself
It should. I can't think of anything more compulsory than that. {Comment #532}
It can't. My schools and parents tried pretty hard and it only worked to a limited extent (I only figured out how to cook this week and I still can't get my head round the concept of tidying a room, despite knowing the theory for both forwards and backwards). The simple truth is that practical stuff needs practise and the only way to practise a lot of that stuff is to leave home, at which point it's not school any more...
bingo
agreed, but when that happens i've learnt to go elsewhere rather than make comments like that on another thread.
however, i used to have a habit of doing that, so i get where you're coming from. i also used to do the same on twitter until someone pointed out it was a tad insulting.
apologies indeed then. sorry for misreading your point.
Can I turn all GMM for one minute?
http://twitter.com/jsummerton/status/5810000064
Is this the royal 'we'?
i saw that too :D
yeah thats fair enough appologies, i was just trying to get any sort of conversation going somewhere else on a non-kimi related subject.
That looks like the racing driver we
that's not gmm, that's quoting the source for starters :)
i got taught how to cook at school, i did it for 3 years. {Comment #538}
Same here. Did wonders for my theoretical understanding but I learned the hard way that I couldn't actually cook and my support officer ended up doing most of the practical cooking because the kitchen would probably have burned down otherwise. A very stressful path to learned helplessness, and I'd have been better off if school hadn't attempted to teach me how to cook. I am an awkward student at times :(
please do that. tell me about summerton. i have no clue who he is or what he's ever done.
ask Dank ;) i have no idea who he is
same question to dank.
i feel like cilla.
alls i know is that he needs another year atleast before f1. would be stupid otherwies
What? Is it Blind Date now?
He was better than Marco Andretti in A1GP Team USA...
afternoon/night all. the doohikey is moving faster than in an F1 session, seems that everybody is a little bit chatty today :)
Ah you beat me to it.
and those graduates are the ones who think that a degree will get you a job end of. silly people {Comment #564}
And silly career advisers who told them so (as was the case with me).
Images of Kimi on one side of the wall and Brawn, Red Bull and McLaren on the other :D
I'm exhausted
Sorry I was amusing myself reading the bilge on the Autosport forums.
Jonathan Summerton: drove in Formula BMW, F3 Euroseries and a bit of A1GP. Ok-ish. American.
I bid you good day.
i don't know how that happened.
#sorrytheinternet
that does annoy me quite alot in recent years. its just drummed into you UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI, but actually, thats the stuppiest thing to say ever.
adios?
thanks you, and good night sir.
No need to apologise to the entire Internet, most of it isn't looking.
If we tell twitter the whole internet would know.
Did you know Ringo Star died?
apparently they are.
First thought, USF1?
not this year. he would be a fool
Is way past my bedtime
G'night peeps
Shout if there's a press release tomorrow please ;)
byeeeee
Runner up in Atlantics this year, tied on points with the championship winner, lost on no. of 2nd positions 4 to 3.
Morning everyone. Anything happen while I was in bed?
You are the feeder series expert.
I haven't paid much attention to Summerton but I know Clive really rates him
how not. there are at least three conversations on three completely different subjects! SPC really improves your multitasking abilities...
Hello the entire Internet. (wave)
Not quite like that though!
I didn't think Peter Windsor and Co. were set to take on more experienced drivers at USF1, then go do the American driver route? Maybe he's their reserve driver?
night bassano
engage the headpinger.
ahh good. meant to ask you if you'll come back next week and tell us how you gorr'on?
What an absolutely ghastly programme that was!
Agreed. It was basically "which of these three people would you least object to sleeping with?"
Hello all,
In other driver news... how am I supposed to take Jonathan Summerton's tweet that I just got.
"F1 here we come!"
They spectacularly failed in the last series when they allowed the contestants to change their selection if they didn't like the person they had just chosen. Kinda went against the whole 'blind' bit of the programme I felt.
well. i like that twitter is now the defacto mechanism for official announcements.
what??
That Jonathan Summerton, he's a card isn't he?
http://twitter.com/jsummerton/status/5810625099
Instant dislike!
He's a sly one, isn't he!
Exactly.
"Don't like you, ooh hello, and I certainly don't like him!!! Cilla, can I have contestant number two please instead?"
Complete stab in the dark here. Anybody know anything about Pitlane Magazine?
A fanzine or professional outfit? The WHOIS info suggest the former rather than the latter?
Did you find out anything about it? {Comment #662}
I'm involved with it (but not as its creator), and ambitious as it is, I can confirm it's considerably closer to the fanzine end of the spectrum than a professional outfit at the moment, if that's any help...
That why I brought it forth to the Sidepodcast crucible of truth. If a rumor can survive here, than it can survive anywhere.
what wally approved that idea?
Probably the same person responsible for Scrappy Doo.
I bet GMM already put out the release.
sounds like the era when ITV was going truly downhill and obliterating their legacy
do you know what the deal is then?
i like the concept and the chap in charge seems nice, but lots of people are signing up and have no idea what to?
:-)
:D
Can you actually believe I'm currently on Wikipedia trying to find out?
yes!
Oh my word. You're all in so much trouble!!
This = LOL
Scrappy Doo was a stupid idea.
Though in my defense I googled the dr who planet Raxacoricofallapatorius earlier in the week!
What? How? Don't know what you mean.
Good night everyone.
And I thought I'd get a early night tonight.
Night Kathi.
Hmmmmm......
ahah. noooo
Did Blind Date ever feature on an episode of Star Trek or Doctor Who? If not you'll be out of luck.
What did I do?
Who?
Summerton's FORIX profile (sub to Autosport website may be needed):
http://forix.autosport.com/driver.php?l=0&d=999&r=0&c=0&x=0&s=0&b=0
His website is called www.formulajon.com
ALL OF YOU
formula jon? I LOVE THAT
Why?
night kathi and thank you again.
Night Kathi
Including me?
Night Kathi
Hah errrrrrm no reason?
and me?
What did I do?
Hmmmm mainly mr c :P
If Mercedes are taking over from Brawn... then are they classed as a new team? seeing as their name is changing? {Comment #741}
Shouldn't be... ...but then according to F1's own regulations, Brawn should not have been treated as a new outfit either and it was!
I still maintain ALL OF YOU though.
huh?
What did I do?
I dont remember what i said, but it's pretty certain that i said something bad
Yes. I would say that's a pretty safe assumption :P
Byeee people who are going
Somebody has to be last in each universe why not make it the same guy for simplicity {Comment #1031}
According to quantum theory, it's really simple. Every atom is everywhere at once due to having indeterminate position. Atom combinations have no position until observed and we can only observe one universe each time. So there may as well only be one alternate universe because every grid combination is possible - including one where the grid is entirely composed of Sidepodcast contributors.
So Badoer is last in every alternate universe. But so is everybody else!
Can't everyone in F1 just shut up for a day! ;) {Comment #1086}
That could make NaBloPoMo slightly tricky...
oh yeah! blimey they picked a good month for you to do it!
this has to be one of the weirdest comments I've ever read at SPC. how quantum mechanics ended up here? :D
I must read back...
I wonder if this is anything to do with Alan Davies asking how long a piece of string was earlier tonight
do you know what the deal is then?
i like the concept and the chap in charge seems nice, but lots of people are signing up and have no idea what to? {Comment #1217}
To be honest I don't know much more than you yet. I'm still waiting to see what my exact role is, for instance (I'm being considered for writing and proofreading, and for all I know I might end up being asked to do both in the same issue).
I'm just looking forward to the adventure...
that's good. i'm looking forward to reading it.
however, the last time we were involved in a project like this it went downhill quickly, so i think we'll keep it at arms length for the time being.
oh yeah! blimey they picked a good month for you to do it! {Comment #1255}
November is usually a strange month to do the NaBloPoMo challenge, but that's when the big contest is and thus the one that really screams to be done. It's probably the only month in the year when I hope for F1 controversies to come out...
Probably. He should have known better though after 5 series of QI - the obvious answer is rarely correct.
this has to be one of the weirdest comments I've ever read at SPC. how quantum mechanics ended up here? :D {Comment #1256}
Parallel universe theory invokes theories of infinity, which in my head always link to quantum mechanics and black holes... ...especially after seeing the last two Alan Davies shows!
I read back the last 400 comments, I got it. In context seems pretty normal for SPC... I take back the 'weird' adjective :D
Rubbish, Tom Walkinshaw was born on 14 August and the year is wrong also!
That comment was brusque enough to have come from Walkinshaw himself. If all the stuf that has happened this week that seems an odd one to be worthy of comment
