We had quite a relaxing weekend at Sidepodcast HQ, and I hope yours was of a similar nature. We are into a brand new week now, with Monday dawning probably quite dark and maybe even a little bit stormy. Here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Mr C went a bit mad blogging yesterday, talking about the coverage that FOM provide compared to other motorsport series', plus a glimpse at that excellent 3D stuff we saw during the Abu Dhabi GP. He also wrote about those oh-so-unsuccessful overtaking regulations again, with a special mention to a special someone in the title.
- In Formula 1 news, Alonso was spotted with his new Ferrari chums again, with some photographic evidence of he and Alonso getting on together. How will they fare as teammates this year? Will they be rivals? Or will they be best friends? And more importantly, how much interaction with Rob will Alonso have, because I am jealous!
- After we talked recently about Notus not worried about signing a Malaysian driver for their team, it now looks as though we might find out who they've got on board very soon. Tony Fernandes has said they have one driver signed already, so with just one more to come, it might be soon. Then again it might not! You never can tell.
That's all for now. Let's hope Monday runs pretty smoothly for everyone, especially as we need to forget about Friday 13th! As per usual, I will see you in the comments.
Hello everyone! I survived the lasagne lesson, I'm pleased to say :)
Ah, new Daily. Pinger has gone on holiday.
Good to hear :-)
Glad you didn't poison anyone.
It's Monday.

A lovely Guide to Formula Two for y'all.
Afternoon everyone.
Glad you didn't poison anyone. {Comment #2}
True. I also managed not to burn the house down (or anything else for that matter) and didn't get mad at anything. Took ages to sort out the onions though...
Hello all!
Well, I've finally succumbed and joined the ranks of al you other bloggers out there. Check out my new blog at
http://pardonthefrench.wordpress.com/
Hello there
Well done Sean! I've left a comment!
i am in the lobby of crown towers and i really feel like i dont belong here!
Why are you there?
popped into louis vuitton to find out the price of a bag a friend wants to buy. They are renovating their normal crown store so have moved into the lobby of the hotel. Good place to go kimi spotting but not in november!
And how overpriced was the bag?
now i am at albert park. Also a good place for kimi spotting, but i feel i belong here.
Is there such a thing as a BS-ometer?
"Brawn to confirm Merc, Rosberg, and Heidfeld"
An affinity with Albert Park? ;)
With the Daily Mail as their source, the reading on that meter will be pretty high
Funny, some other BS sources suggest Heidfeld to McLaren :-) obviously two top teams powered by Merc power is too much for some to keep up with :-)
Indeed so... That said, TWO World Champions on the market in the middle of November - who would've thought...?
hmmmmmmmm...
Heidfeld to Brawn is more likely than Heidfeld to McLaren for me, if only because Heidfeld is more in Brawn's budget, and McLaren still has Kimi as a prime option.
Wolf! F1 Classics on tonight - and it's a cracker - Australia 1994. I cringe at the thought of Slater commentating on THE collision, though.
yes, but then there is that Jenson visits Woking story with message to both Kimi and Brawn :-) I suggest to wait. come Bahrain the things should clear up sufficiently enough for at least 20 cars on the grid with drivers in cockpits :-)
yes yes, I know. I missed last week :-( hope I will not miss this one
All the more reason to make Heidfeld to Brawn even more likely than Heidfeld to McLaren.
Morning all.
Hmmmmm indeed. Peeling back the layers of this particular news onion, I think that the core of it is the Brundle story in the Times, which was then followed up by the Mail, then pecked at and regurgitated by GMM/Planet-F1 (what an unholy alliance). In much the same way as the quality of a page degrades every time you send it by fax, this story has accrued a layer of BS as it's gone through the machine
The selection of races are too Schumi-centric for me (although at least they cover both his high and low points). They could've added some brilliant non-Schumi races, like Italy and Europe 1999 (they don't even have a single 1999 race in the lineup!)
I caught a replay on the weekend. Did you miss that too?
I remember listening to the commentary on Radio 5, and S Taylor got so angry that he became incoherent.
Not quite pure evil, but I get what you mean. :D
I caught the promo for the Classic races and they did somehow stress the "Schumi" thing as something all the races selected have in common
S Taylor incoherent? Never heard that before...
I had F1 and racing free weekend. Getting mentally ready for Macau :-)
MB's stuff is ghost-written for him by a well-connected writer, and the original Times story is interestingly sourced. It even has an on-the-record quote from a 'McLaren spokesman' (my former boss - another MB - no doubt), which indicates if nothing else that they are playing along with Jenson's management.
How will Asian F1 fans learn more about F1 history if all they keep showing is Schumi, Schumi? Well, at least it's a start, I guess...
for many still F1 is Schumi and nothing else ...
Ghastly.
More like Mr C's ultimate nightmare. :D
Did you watch the RoC? Beijing might as well have been in the middle of Germany. :D Japan is an exception, though - that is Senna country. Thanks to Honda, they saw F1 way before the rest of Asia did. :)
So McLaren know that they aren't Jenson's primary option right now? But they're just... using each other to achieve their objectives?
sounds silly, crazy... sounds so much like F1 :-)
Mornings. lecturers should not be allowed to cancel lectures unexpectedly :(
That only matters if you actually go to your lectures though. ;)
True :P
apparently Norbert haug has been saying there will be a Mercedes announcement at 12...
I'd better prep a breakout thread.
Morning all.
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/11/mercedes-to-announce-f1-future-plans-this-morning/
Morning!
Why do announcements seem to happen on a Monday!
because it is the first day after Sunday :-)
Still no pinger?
Oh well, here's the thread in advance of the announcement: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/16/mercedes-set-to-confirm-plans/
Bah! My Twittering madskillz beat him by a good 30 mins with that this morning.
Except I'll concede he's perhaps a little bit more popular than me.
Like the short link... made me think you were confirming plans of some sort!
Morning everyone!
I had a dream last night that all my teeth were falling out.
My teeth feel weird today.
I've had a dream like that before. It's rather horrible :(
Oooh. Oddd... Possibly Dr Who related? you couldn't see their teeth after they went all watery.
Even odder I looked up on google about teeth falling out dreams and the first link was Bella Online: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art10573.asp
"The next time you dream about losing teeth, before trying to figure out what it means, ask yourself how the dream made you feel."
... Like I needed a dentist.
We're discussing how odd and slightly brilliant it is buying stuff in the Apple Store
They have no cash registers!!
Or a desk to go to when you want to buy something.
You have to collar someone, who isn't busy.
I was lucky that when I got the apple tv, we could find someone free. Another time I went for some audio cables, and i was told to wait by someone selling a macbook, and after a few mins, i put the cables back on the shelf and left.
I am very easily impressed but it was odd when the dude last week just yanked out a card thingy from his pocket for me to pay. Mind = blown
Booked my flights for tomorrow! :D :D :D
quite the polar opposite to how I book flights :D
hehe, My planning style is slightly more mrc ;)
Slight problem in that i still have nowhere to live
Live at the airport like Tom Hanks
That's the plan :P

The reason they struggle is that they have never had to listen to anyone else before telling them what to do. You sit in a rally car and you have to put your life in your co-drivers hands. It takes time.

Hahahahaha. :)

ahh, I have rediscovered the F1FM awesomeness that Australian Nick made with the Legard CD for Sidepodradio :D
Yeah, Ferrari look to be having a great time in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKQFsfYLEBY
This would only happen if those wild Glock-to-Virgin stories are true. And if Glock picks Virgin over Renault, he'd be nuts.
#sorryRG
I want a silly driver move so it can give me an excuse to post the video to the song Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches :(
Poor Phil. He goes off for a week to raise funds by rallying, and the Brawn world goes nuts. By the time he gets back, there's so much speculation on the RBGP forums that has gone unchecked...
There just could be no Renault drive next year - I think that is why Timo is considering Nick Wirths virtual team.

I'm sorry, but saying that out loud just makes me laugh. a LOT. :D
I was the one who just bought it up :P I think its funny anyway.
Don't say it's from the Toyota era
It's the last piece of Toyota DNA ;)
Was he in a gravel trap?
nope.
going round a corner and everything

A rare picture indeed :-p
I daren't, I might slap myself.

F1 Rejects has a machine (which they call something a bit ruder). I'm sure it will be going off very, very loudly at this point...

I have a picture of Silverstone circuit on my wall, and I'm fairly sure it doesn't mean I'm going to be driven over by two-dozen cars next year or have to pay Bernie a nine-figure sum for the priviledge...

Sorry Journeyer, hadn't managed to read through that one fast enough after getting home and logging on. I'll buzz off if you like, seems like I'm stepping on toes.
Am listening to the podcast of the first Bloggers Karting event, can't wait for 2010's! :D
Your fine, just watch your thread.
You're not stepping on anybody's toes. Journeyer was just trying to nudge you towards the Mercedes thread where all the Mercedes discussion takes place.
Oh.my.goodness.
Piquet to Force India ;)
Q. Is Formula One still possible in 2010?
NP: I'm close to Force India at the moment but obviously this is being very interesting for me, so I don't know. I'm still in the process of deciding what I'm going to do. Maybe spend one more year in Europe before coming here; it's still all up in the air.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80167
I love how a Q&A with Piquet is now categorised as Nascar on autosport
Don't go all GMM on us! That just says he's close to them

Piquet to Force India ;) {Comment #131}
There is more chance of me going to Force India than Nelson, given that Liuzzi's signed, Sutil is unless he decides to go somewhere else (Mercedes?) and Neel and Chandhok are fighting over the test seat. Not to mention that Nelson is not the only outsider looking at a Force India seat...
Afternoon.
WHat's an 'invalid post id'?
Aww no, look at this comment from Joeon the GMM post...
I am sufficiently disenchanted with the feedback today that I may simply shut down the blog.
Why should I bother to waste my time?
!! :(
What did I say would happen the other day???
just saw it. :(
gavin what's up?
He apparently said something similar the other day that was later removed - it went out on the email updates though. However, I wasn't sure if it was someone impersonating him or not.
Ah, Joe says it was him but removed it after reflection
Hmm I tried to reply to Christine's comment asking what Baabaa was and it tells me I have an Error: invalid post id...
The great thing about the internet is that it’s a party to which everyone is invited. The problem with the internet is that it’s a party to which everyone is invited.

Amen to that
odd. don't think any post id's have changed.
It's something to do with the link that was in it I think. No matter, the question was answered anyway!
I get that now and then, refreshing the page is usually necessary.
I hard refreshed twice.
Right you lovely people (Gavin will like this ;) )
I'm interviewing Pippa Mann on Thursday, any questions you have?
http://www.pippamann.com/default.aspx
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pippa_Mann
Ooh you lucky beggar!
Um, I would suggest asking her about PitFit as she tweets about it all the time.
Also ask her how her recent test went, and how she has adapted to racing in the states and what the differences are between there and Europe.
Also, if you could say thanks from me for the signed photo that would be lovely ;)
Wow, awesome! :D
Are her long-term plans to continue racing in the States and follow the likes of Katherine Legge into Indycar or is she planning to try going back to Europe at some point?
If I think of any more I'll hashtag them. :P

ooh, joe suggests franck for the 2nd renault seat:
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/a-flight-of-blue-fancy/
well, okay... he says he's french and worth considering at least.
Under a title "flight of fancy." :(
...among others (Baguette, Pic, Pagenaud, Duval, Treluyer)
I thought that was referring to the Gordini renaming rather than the choice of 2nd driver?
although i dont like to say it, baguette is the one most likely amongst those lot
and I missed Bianchi too.
For Gavin
http://www.pitfit.com/motor-sports/
I read it as the entire process of making it a French team again.
Ahh. But he does say that given Crashgate, "the idea of making the team more French and rebranding it is a good option."
not french?
Belgian. But it SOUNDS French! :D
It's never going to be Franck. I'm not sure why all those people have brought his name up again. It's just mean.
true, but he was listed
I'd have him in my team if he wants a drive!!
Note - I may not have a team
I wouldn't say Joe is mean. Hehe. ;)
It is mean to get my hopes up.
my take:
- he has f1 experience
- he fell out with flav not renault
- testing is limited and he has shown himself to be a fine car developer
- he knows people within the team and they know him
it's not beyond the realms of possibility. gotta be better than employing a bread stick anyhow.
That makes you mean too.
was just tihnking hte same. if the team want someone who's decent and consistant then francks their guy
Maybe next time you speak to Joe, you should ask in his opinion how realistic Franck's chances actually are.
#sorrychristine
#sorryrg
(man the place is soo sensitive :) )
Everybody Loves Franck
I feel he should get a drive
Ooooh. :D
Oops, quote fail :(
aannd a quote fail.
The guy came 2nd at Le Mans with a broken foot. Glock missed out on the last 3 races of the season with a wound to his leg. Go figure.
:D
true. not sure glocks decision was his though
True, but Peugeot let Franck race and look where it still got him even with an injury.
and Toyota didn't let Glock race. I'm not sure you can compare them as Franck was lucky to be able to drive.
Yeah I saw that. You should still ask her how it improves her racecraft I think.
dont worry, its still on the list. am looking at lots of photos and stuff, looks really interesting
Toyota's F1 team did know what they were doing anyway. And that's referring to them in general. Never was an F1 team run so farcically.
That's unfair - I think Glock was forced out!
didn't*
True ,in their lifespan no-one told them they were allowed to change their bleedin' livery! ;)
To be fair Toyota F1 were trying to save themselves - so they drafted in Kobayashi to pull on the heart-strings of Mothership Toyota about this is the new Japanese wunderkid. Toyota board cried with them but still sent them off to the executioner.
having read joe's comments relating to considering no further blogging. i conclude the simple answer is micropayments.
stupid people won't pay because they're are too dumb to understand the benefits and if you eradicate the stupid people, the problem is solved.
i'm also betting that updatef1 end the agreement with gmm in the near future. time will tell though.
One good Japanese driver was never going to change their mind. If they think he's that good then they'll do a Kaz with him
without an engine? that'll be some achievement.
Can you elaborate further? Give an example or something? (Better yet, write a blog post on it!)
they could have done a deal with someone if they had wanted too. dosent have to be an engine deal, they could have sorted him a drive another way
maybe. the stupid people in the thread (probably daily mail readers), don't appear to be the kind of people to pay who'd pay for content. so they'd simply stop commenting.
joe would get some additional income and sensible comments.
I'd be happy to pay for his quality output.
me too. same as i'm happy to pay for gp+ and autosport.
Is James Allen's site down again?
I hear twitter are recruiting him to get advice on website hosting.
So you mean like a couple of quid a month to view his posts? That sounds reasonable. I'd put it to him next time you speak to him as well.
Jamesallenonf1: @Lynn_duffy - I know, I'm really sorry. We add more capacity and the traffic spikes get bigger. "We need a bigger boat", as they say
:D For the record, JA's site has been down for some time now. I'll see his opinion tomorrow.
I wonder how much more is "more capacity"?
...or a better content management system.
Tempted to tweet him about media temple, just for a giggle.
But then I'd feel guilty and evil!
Thanks Kathi. Guess I'll have to wait to irder his book then :(
he needs a MrC
don't we all? ;)
Time to head home! Yay!

I just sent an email to someone at F2, got an out of office reply to email a mr sam tremayne. any relation do we think?
certainly possible.
Does anyone know what Franck said to Canadian radio today?
From http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/thieving-from-the-thieves/
Apparently, he said he has talked to Renault.
We knew that already though. Did he say whether or not he is still talking to them?
I think this is the story that was linked to earlier: http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2009/11/16/montagny-raising-hopes-for-renault-seat/
Ahoy Christine! Guest post incoming!
Imagine if you had decided to kill off sidepodcast just as Frank got a drive
Oooh, marvellous!
yippee!

We would just have to set up Sidefranckcast instead.

Crew loading going perfectly. Should be faster than normal as there are only 6 crew members rather than the normal 7
ahaha.
No panda? :(
I am pinger, hear me roar: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/16/how-driver-negotiations-work-mercedes-gp/
Or something.
Quick question...
Will a PS2 copy of GT4 work on a PS3?
NASA are crazy. How can they miss an opportunity like this. Pandas would not be so lazy if they didn't have all that weight to haul around so zero G would be great for them
We should have an official pinger sound.
And it should be Brazil's pit lane warning buzzer thingy.
It MIGHT if you have the original PS3 that had backwards compatability.
No. Only on 60GB model of PS3s which were stopped released a few months after the PS3 was launched so it's unlikely...
My comment on Joe's GMM thread survived unscathed. I even have a couple of people including Jordan leaping to my defence following the unfounded allegations that I am full of 'it'. You would think GMM and their fan would recognise 'it' though wouldn't you?
I was highly amused. Maybe "it" got trapped in Google Translate.
I'm surprised neither you nor Joe have received a letter from his lawyer... at least I think it's his lawyer. ;)
Maybe I should send his made-up lawyer a copy of a real lawyer's letter, so that he can cut-and-paste it into an improved made-up laywer's letter...
after we copied the contents of the last email into the comments, the follow up message was something along the lines of:
"i will never contact you this way again".
apparently the idea of someone copying and pasting his missive frightening the life out of him.
although quite how else we are to be contacted is anyone's guess?
:D
Glad you liked it
It's his mother. ;)
:D
:D
he'd send his made-up lawyer in person.
I wondered too at one point, this is what I found out
http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/support/games/detail/item82567/Playable-Software-for-PlayStation-3/
I have never heard of anyone promising not to send a lawyer's letter. Clearly his lawyer is bogus.
to where?
I putting this under general debate, if it so significant becoming a World Champion (even if won by one point) then clearly Keke Rosberg is a better driver than Stirling Moss even though he only got 44 points from 16 races and 1 victory on the road to the championship. In assessing a driving it should reflect more than one or two races and more than one or two seasons.
Rockall.
ahh. tis invite only.
#sidepodspace update
Crew fully loaded. Best commentary on NASA TV ever. They finally found two people who can speak for more than two minutes without a ten minute break and who can explain what is going on and not sound like Mr C reading it.
But Moss won races - plenty of them. No wins from Nick. You might wanna read Stuart's article too.
Nick Heidfeld is comparable to Chris Amon, much as in the same way that Button is comparable to Denny Hulme...
oi! actually, fair comment.
Nick Heidfeld is not as good as Chris Amon. There are respected commentators from his time who believe that Amon was second only tow JYS in terms of ability.
Dogger then.
So my lickle boat is not welcome then?
I can bring Rose Wine, Frozen Pizzas (with the plastic wrapping removed) and ingredients for cupcakes.
(But seeing as I have no boat, you're quite safe, for now) :)
I think you will find Chris actually had more time in competitive cars. Actually my analysis to look for equalisation so drivers can be compared suggest that Toyota was the car with the third best potential to score points this season. It is an elaborate analysis based on projecting qualifying with fastest laps throughout the season. Either that or Jarno's single lap performance is in a league above everyone else. I can understand why they wanted to ditch both drivers (sorry Timo and RG!).
Definitely. Amon was unlucky rather than mediocre.
Hey everyone,
I think I know what song Nick Fry and Ross Brawn are singing today.
Stuart said the following...
"Some drivers earn undisclosed amounts from sponsors, whether or not they draw a salary from the team. Some are on incentive schemes that give them bonuses for points (step forward Nick Heidfeld, among others - there’s a reason for that consistent semi-mediocrity)."
I do not think this is the case, and any way what is wrong with scoring points anyway?
Interesting observation on Toyota. The truth may lie somewhere in between the car's potential and Trulli's qualifying. It certainly had 1 or 2 chances to win this year (which it duly blew). And we all know how good Trulli is on Saturdays.
No, not that. His latest article (just came out today).
I think his reaction to losing out Kubica in getting the first win at BMW in Canada 2008 indicates something different to me. He looked gutted.
A quick observation, we all go on about how good Trulli was in quali, but when Trulli was up there, so was Glock.
Would be interesting to see their quali performances this year.
That car on a good few circuits was staggeringly fast both in qualifying and in the race. I am probably going to shoot myself but the drivers that got the most out of their steeds might just wear red suits or had a White Orange and Red livery.
I remember watching Heidfeld tigering the Jordan through the Esses at Suzuka in '04 and being very impressed. But since then the fire has gone out.
Truli was the overall fifth best qualifier if qualifying poistion equalled the same points as races.
fuel-corrected?
Woooohooo....
I finished the Grell Mystery as read by Christine http://librivox.org/the-grell-mystery-by-frank-froest/
It was really good. And I heartily recommend it!
My favorite bit? Christine doing the bird impression ;)
Is it just a coincidence his name is Frank, regardless of the spelling?
Yes that is fuel corrected qualifying - a very good point but the only way to compare drivers and of course Q2.
For reference, who's the best qualifier, and where was Glock?
hey guys
evening.
an gals
Hi Kimster
Give him a Brawn or a Macca and a competitive team mate - you might be surprised. He rises to challenges - even in 2008 his qually was bad but at the end of the season he equalised this situation with Robert and this year out-qualified (fuel-corrected) Robert.
Have a look at his first ride of Troy Corser racing motorbike.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBQcAmWWV-I&feature=related
Oh I remember Heidfeld in 04, stunning drive in a sub-optimal vehicle (Pat Symonds words, but who cares about him now). Glock was also impressive that season. Jordan "discovered" those 2 drivers :D
Don't let Eddie Jordan see that comment or the man will have a field day
I dont need tell him, he already does that!!!
Ooooh, if any one asks. I discovered Timo. Yep. I accidently set Pantano's plane tickets to Indianpolis instead of Montreal.
One way was it?
Vettel by a margin of 14.5 points - in points terms Trulli was 62 compared to 18.5 for Timo. Jenson and Rubens are equal but Jenson had more absolute quickest times.
Whats with the .5s?
Who discovered Eddie Jordan then?
Timo on his first out beat Nick.
Hello
Vettel - why didn't I think of him...! Trulli-Timo gap is HUGE, way bigger than I thought. Jenson would've won the duel with Rubens had he not struggled with quali in the 2nd half of the season.
Oh, and HI, Kimster! Awesome to see you in these parts. :D
Anyhoo, off to bed, VERY late here. Night all.
And was amazingly consistant in his last three races of the season as well.
Bye Journeyer, hey Pat.
Saving all the energy for my quiz eh Journeyer? I am writing it now, its EXTREMELY hard
It's the same for everyone, Kimster. ;) :D
I know, GMM and all, and it's from late October but:
http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/091021115504.shtml
Oh and Muse were fantastic last friday Luke ;)
Knowing GMM, it was probably Force India, not Renault...
Oh? You must be confusing me with someone else I guess. I'm a fan of Mousse.
What kind of moose? The animal or the food?
To make comparison could only award half points to Sepang - analysis was comparing qualifing to final result - anothe ranalysis is how many positions a driver can make from a grid position against a statistical background of what could be expected. I will entitled the post when finished Racers, Pacers and Faders. I
I was not brave enough to ask Me or Christine to put up for each driver a poll with are they a Racer (Kimi or Lewis springs to mind), Pacers (I guess for most people Nick) and Faders (Jarno)? Perceptions are then compared to Results.
or a mix? chocolate leg moose yum!!
Hedged their bets by almost naming every driver they could think of didn't they?
The type of Mousse that sings.
Three of Nicks last four races were botched by the team or equipment if we are being honest
A big hit in Canada aren't they?
Trulli was quite close to Mark - um and I thought Mark was more of a qualifier. The Red Bulls should have walked the championship.
Followed by 5 years at BMW/Sauber. Interesing.
(Probably nothing in it)
woop woop?
if you feel like it ;) we'd all love to hear that part :P
and you know I think he might still end up being at the team next year - he is hugely loved by everyone at the factory.
#sidepodspace update
I wasn't paying attention but I think they just delayed the launch. By a minute. Weird
not sure i understand what you're asking?
Good chance, love it to happen as well. Not going to be a bad little car either.
Question to all, will Sauber be announced next season or do we have to wait for Toyota to confirm they aren't selling up?
keeping christine happy?
Toyota wont sell up. FIA will make sure of that. QUADBIKE should be on the grid
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
They may be worried that everything is going so well they felt they just had to have a delay as a tradition
Steven, how long till launch?
Sauber, not quadbike. I'm picky like that.
actually... i sort of understand.
that seems like a good idea. i have temporarily broken the poll widget, but if i can fix it this evening, we can give that a go. assuming you are happy to compile the results for us?
although what defines a "racer"?
overtaker?
Thanks
I'll see what I can do! But seriously listen to the book, it's a rip roaring detective adventure.
Imagine if you were Mr C and you had always said you'd listen to Audiobooks if only the sound quality was better. You'd think you'd almost have to listen to this one ;)
but if you got pole and won the race?
in every race?
For each driver a voting pole is set up so it could be Jenson is he a) Racer b) Pacer c) Fader. Obviously Lewis goes for it 10/10th for almost the entire race (Monza) is a racer, a pacer is a driver that is thinking of speed versus tyre wear, a Fader starts well but gets overtaken or becomes a mobile chicane (Jarno).
At the end of day you can see how drivers are perceived. There are obvious choices for some driver it gets interesting in say Adrian or PK?
I am having to go to meeting see you in the morning!
how do you show the real results though?!
ok. remind me in the morning and we'll discuss it more.
i like it in principle but am confused by the details.
Sure see you in the morning - You can email me if unclear but will only pick up tomorrow.
Launch is 7:27pm or 7:28 if the delay is correct
Ignore the official countdown and follow the clock here
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
Will send an email to clarify - I think I could put it on my blog but no one reads it!
cheers sir. if you put it on your blog we can plug it, otherwise, happy to take a look.
Is it safe to come out yet? Too many driver options floating about earlier - I was getting dizzy ;)
#GMMfail
I have found Radio Canada's own version of Franck's interview. Unfortuantely it is in French. He says that he has spoken to the technical people at Renault and his agent Gilles Bellec has spoken to the commercial people. He expects a reply within two weeks.
http://www.radio-canada.ca/sports/sports_motorises/2009/11/13/002-montagnyrenault.shtml
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/wtd-sunday-jpg
Oops, was just about to add "hello all" and some quip about yesterday's What The Duck
Then Blug!
#sidepodspace
1hour to launch. The crew are loaded and the close out crew have locked them in. Everything seems to be going according to plan. Even the forecast high seas in the area where the SRBs will land are nowhere near as bad as predicted.
I think the only thing that could cause a delay now is if NASA get a piece of string caught on the nose.
Oooh, it has audio. Franck speaks!
haha. noted.
Just wondering, are Renault replacing Bob bobbell or are they keeping him now?
I did an impression?? Was I drunk?
Bob Bell, I mean. Too many b's.
I couldn't get the audio to play
Wasn't me ;)
Much as I like Franck, he better not get it.
He will stay at the team but he may not be the team principal. I would expect someone new to get that job
Thanks to Dank for that lovely tweet response ;)
Hiiii. London is stupid busy. Nick is moaning about it being his last day.
good research sir.
What a surprise. You and Nick together again
huh?
@feederseries Phwoar! I've got nothing else to say about the lady. I bid you good day.
ahh, right. was looking here: http://sidepodcast.com/playground/microblogging.php
i like his tweet to stuart.
Pesky Silverlight [rolls eyes]
:-)
RG, "I'm a Celeb", really?
Timo's not on it is he?
Is it me or is the NASA TV commentary really quiet?
Is Dubai on your world wide trip-extravaganza-thingy?
His Visa came through then?
No, I just happen to like it...
...though if Timo was on it, added bonus.
It is now. The commentary when they were loading the crew was fine but since they switched to the launch and assent commentary i have had to turn it up full blast and it is still poor
[shakes head in despair]
Evening.
Who made the millionth comment?
It's not a million yet just 500,000. Just seems unfair in that context though
Has there been a million, I thought I read something about 500k on Twitter a few days ago?
Hey Jackie
So, has the number been reached then?
I think it was Nick but I can't remember what he said
Nick
something about needing more hours in a day
Something about there not being enough hours in the day.
Oops I thout it was a million .. half a mill is still outstanding though
Its good...
I'm not going to win the argument, so won't bother.
That's nice since he's heading off to warmer climes .. we'll have to stay up half the night to say hi now
It seems no time at all since 100,000. I would imagine the millionth will be around the end of next year
It's all relative but yes, you're right - that discussion is for another arena
something like that :-)
That's kinda amusing when you think about it!
I remember that :)
Hi Bassano :)
twas last year: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/12/31/1000-posts-100000-comments-and-counting/
or if you prefer, longer ago than i can remember.
I can reveal that I have been talking to people about driving for Brawn/Mercedes GP or McLaren. When there is more to reveal I hope to be able to talk about it some more ;)
That's no mean feat!
:( Meanie. I'm trying to leave the train is late.
Hello all. I have downloaded the book and am looking forward to listening. However, first I must listen to the Dr Who Commentary which is now on my iPod :) #sorrychristine
400,000 in under 12 months. we really should get out more.
As much as I'd love to catch up with all the comments and tweets I don't think I'll have time today. After the launch and some food I need to be doing some studying for me exam retake. Who is on shooing duty?
Come to Autosport
Outside is dangerous! It has water....
been before. it bored me witless.
Did you get to see Michel?
Well, this is true but I was referrring to your "longer than I can remember" statement :D
SHOOOOOO
LOL so I have spent 37 quid on a ticket to be bored :(
oooh! ahah.
It'll be different this year! The same stalls will be arranged in a different fashion for a start...
if you haven't been before it's fun.
hmmm ;)
backpeddling?
:D
if you've not been before; go
if you are interested in stuff other than f1; go
yes.
if i'm honest it is nowhere near the money you just paid. sorry.
No, that's true. The first Autosport is always fun.
*it is not worth
go on go on .. you know you want to! Mav's going too
depends why you go
our first one wasn't 37 squid though.
Ta but later :-)
for the f1 stuff.
On a serious note: has anyone seem any promo codes for Autosport International? There were a few floating around last year, which softened the blow a bit.
I want to go to a GMM event, pretty much anything could happen. Quite unpredictable :D
she's got a paddock pass
It costs £37????
what if you haven't been for 6 yrs?
jackie might not be just going for that.
you will enjoy it because of all the non-f1 stuff.
We're having a PF meet-up and that's what the others bought
:D
good question.
my objection is mostly with the cost. keep in mind parking could be another £15 on top of that. it's not worth the money in my opinion.
the extra bits make it cost that. the normal one is 26 i think?
And guaranteed to be 10 new stands every hour!
wow fast workers :-)
was 35 + 2 quid booking fee
I could go to a football match and be bored for cheaper than that.
if you go for the f1 stuff, its not
if you go for the whole show, it is
I forgot about parking. I thought it was a fiver when I went last time. I remember a lot of walking to/from the car.
it's £30 per person without the paddock pass. plus parking. so for us:
approx £75
You probably won't go for another six after attending this year's...
But honestly, I say I don't like it, but I get to the end of December and have massive motorsport related withdrawal symptoms and always cave in and go.
Highlight of 2009's ASI: the free goody bag given out at the end. The Brylcreem wax was tres good.
I think they just copy it roughly from other places.
I'm not feeling I made the right decision now :(
general admission is £29
Plus petrol and food & drinks!
you totally did. just make sure you go round the whole show and you'll learn looooooads
can you judge fairly though? if you're going free with your uni?
#sidepodspace
30 minutes till the launch and everything is going according to plan. So far the build up has been pretty boring as nothing has happened that wasn't schedu
i've paid for it for the last 3 years
scheduled
and even if i wasnt getting it for free this year, i'd still pay the money to go
oh yes. that too.
let's call it a round £100 for one day.
I don't really intend to..
There's always the Dakar coverage. Or not.
Either they didn't do them when I went before or I never stayed until it closed..
Made me chuckle that the photo-editor chappy for Autosport said he wouldn't even attend if work hadn't made him on their forums.
am not feeling a whole lot of ASI love ;)
:( :( parking is a rip off
understood.
i wouldn't mind so much if the lighting didn't suck lemons.
i don't have any to give. sorry.
I'm not sure you will learn much. You can see lots of cars you've never heard of among industry products you've never heard about.
And if they invited someone other than DC.
Anyone want a paddock pass going cheap?
:D
:D
oh dear.
Aren't you classed as media or something? Surely they should get you in for free if you asked nicely?
:(
You got to speak to Franck last year
You talk to people then, pick up their leaflets etc etc.
Every year we went, another photo of DC. He's nice and all, but a bit of variety wouldn't go amiss.
:D :D
a PF meetup will make it all the better though.
I haven't yet decided whether to go. All I know is I'm doing karting anyway and since I'm there I may as well.
No chance. I would stop breathing within three feet of Franck.
I'm depressed now, that's worse than b***d
hehehe from your point of view i completely agree. for f1, its rubbish
I don't want a leaflet about a fuel injection system or brake pads.
Did you not go and get something autographed?
Get Mr C to punch him in the back to get his attention
I sent Mr C.
#
then dont talk to them. theres plenty of other people and stuff to look at
Don't be. You will enjoy the show
probably. last year they asked for every detail including your inside leg measurement. haven't looked what they need this year. either way i moaning about GA.
I have a petted lip
That is terrible. I fhe is there this year he will probably want to meet Christine from the internet
#sidepodspace
25 minutes till launch and the commentary teal are spouting stats because they have nothing to talk about
we discussed last, but never got round to actually looking into, having a stand at the show.
that would liven things up, if we could live stream from the event.
The problem is with ASI is that it doesn't really know what it wants to be. It tries to pass itself off as being a good event for Joe Punter, but severely lacks anything to redeem the £30+ price tag for walking around what is effectively a trade show.
I enjoy just about all forms of motor racing, from F1 down to Formula Ford, but even I had to concede I was bored rigid three hours into it. And don't get me started on the 'live show'...
Working on a trade show stand is great fun
Impossible.
about what?
I'm not so sure this "Mr. C" even exists.
Dr Giggles could have one next to you :D
I think it was last year that they added piston heads, thats the joe public bit really. I don't spend more than 30 minutes in that section though, it does very little for me
I don't believe you
never done it, but it would put a new perspective on things i'm sure.
:P
How could he meet Christine off the internet when she has passed out on the floor?
How can you ask a question like that when we all watched Bassano put Alex's blind up?
Christ on a bike. I completely forgot about the Pistonheads bit. If I really wanted to see some chav's Sabaru I'd pop along to Tesco's carpark after closing!
The live show used to be quite good, an okay way to pass 50 mins to an hour... is it not now?
exatamundo
If you did that, even I would come over for that!
I'm not feeling the love for this
if we had a stand, we could educate the passing unwashed to the perils of poor three-lettered f1 journalism.
I have done it a couple of times. You end up meeting the weirdes people and discussing stuff that has no relation to why you are there
What exactly is Pistonheads? I saw a lot of cars with that logo on at Le Mans...
IGNORE EVERYONE! ;)
Go for yourself. You'll either love it, hate it, or be non-plussed, but if you want to you'll learn alot and have fun
DO IT
He could revive you or fall over you and break his leg again
I thought it was about as exciting as watching a scalextric set. Louise Goodman fluffing her lines last year was certainly entertaining though.
I'm not going to ASI and I wouldn't be bringing an Orange Drill™ if I were ;)
I drive a Subaru. 06 STi to be exact. I'm offended! ;)
Wasn't that hugely expensive?
Jackie, have you been before?
If you haven't then go and make your own mind up.
you would? hmmm....
It's basically a show that catergorises the "Modified" Demon Tweeks catalogue
Chav-o-rama website, for, er, chavs: http://www.pistonheads.com/
Nope, never been Pat
I would never forgive myself. I stay home.
Mr C keeps leaving out *for f1
That's what this site is?
Hmm. I can see why it would. At that time I had yet to go to many races. I guess it could seem tame now.
That would be fun. Someone should do a GMM stand and issue news stories every 15 minutes
i can't remember. lpg mentioned waiting until the last minute to get cheap deals, but we were busy over xmas.
But the Pistonheads at Le Mans were DEFINITELY not chavs - in fact some of the best cars had the logo on them!
thats not what AI is about
See you at 10:30pm in the carpark then ;-)
haha .. what about a donationsfest just for that if it's cheap enough
Wow my quoting madskillz where lacking then...
to my mind it's just rubbish. there is no "for f1".
Then go and make your own mind up. The first visit is great
:D :D
says who?
My cinning plan failed
cunning
but would i be right in saying thats because you're not bothered about the rest of it?
To be fair on this site, most people don't care for anything other than f1.
Are you sure?
Because the public site has a main picture of two F1 cars, and I can also see Jenson. Everything else is beyond the jump.
"Autosport International: The Racing Car Show"
It's a motorsport show. Motorsport isn't just F1
#sidepodspace
15 minutes till launch. I think the crew could sleep through the launch window because nothing is happening
am very aware, but AI is about all kinds of motorsport
I know, but to most people here they wouldn't care about that - they'd go for the F1.
am aware, but thats because they're trying to get the public in for 2 days. you'd be stupid not to advertise it with f1 stuff, thats what the public like. but theres very little f1 in it and lots of other stuff
Some reading material on ASI for you all:
http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=106003
and
http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=105836
agreed.
False advertising then? No wonder we didn't enjoy it.
yup, which is why im saying "its rubbish" needs "for f1"
i know. but it's not very interesting.
there's a whole section dedicated to santapod.
case rests.
I was about to make the same point
All flight controllers polled and all say go for launch
this is my point. just because you dont like that, dosent mean someone else will. its a motorsport show. they have circuit and rally and autocross and autotests and oval and all sorts of stuff.
They vote on whether they should launch now?
They always have.
Simon Cowell doesn't get a say there too, does he?
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
launch soooon
They don't vote. If one of them says no go then they don't go.
we could put jedward in the shuttle? theres still time?
my experience tells me the event is rubbish. it tells me it isn't worth the money they charge and i don't recommend it.
car geeks will probably love it. three years olds will also love it.
however it is too expensive for what is basically some marketing stalls housed in a shed.
Not until the shuttle replacement
#sidepodspace
10 minutes till launch
Only if this launch is aborted and they go tomorrow
As much as I hate this 'two-names combined' convention, I have to agree with this idea
A bit like the Euro Constitution then ;)
Except everyone gets asked
i agree with the expensive bit. but what im saying is that if you're going for f1 stuff. then yes, its rubbish.
but if you are a fan of other things, then its more worth it
How obserd....3...2....1.....9 minutes and counting. It gets me everytime
they had big chris and franck: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/01/10/from-autosport-international-2009/
i got nothing left to add :)
If you are involved in motorsport in any way, it is more worth it. As an observer, it's not really helpful to look at nuts and bolts.
You would think a countdown would be pretty straightforward but not for NASA
hehe i get your point, and you are kind of right, you're just also wrong :P
think I'll go to bed depressed .. I am a mean Scot you know!
it should be a trade show for those in the trade.
I love all the historic cars. Every time I go I see things I have never seen before
So, I wonder when there will be a BrawnGP merchandise sale?
in fairness, you only asked our opinion afterwards :)
i think it depends what you go for.
You will enjoy it. it's your first time so you get the first impression hit that others don't
As much as I'm inclined to agree with this, it is a good way for those who cannot afford to go to a GP to get to look at F1 cars reasonably closely.
That's true .. thanks for putting in perspective
T-5 minutes and counting
just go with an open mind and look for non-f1 things that you may/may not be interested in.
Surely the collector's will be snapping that stuff up now
One season as a team and won everything. The collectors will be like locusts
*at
Quite happy I managed to get one of the few hats remaining in the shop in London, the day after the museum meetup
I have a 30 second delay on my NASA video feed
quick refresh?
Funny story for you.
You know how the previous owner is listed on the registration document of a used car, so you can contact them and ask them if it's legit?
Well, someone called a friend of my dad's and asked him "Did you used to own a Vauxhall Cavalier SRI?". My dad's mate responded with "Yeah mate, and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. It got broken into three times, then got stolen and was written off!". To which the guy inquiring responded "Oh... I just bought it!"
That is after the refresh. Not prepared to risk another this late
Noones having my Rubens hat
lifting the cap
No string involved
Another browser?
How much was it, BTW?
1 minute to go
well the Jenson hoodie has increased in price from £40 - £60 :( so am guessing prices will go up before they go down.
I can't remember, it was a LOT cheaper than the Jenson ones though at Goodwood when I got it
Seriously? Unbelievable! At least McLaren dropped their prices!
seriously.. and i really want one :(
Engines lit
5Live talking Mercedes with Johnnie Herbert...
Still rabbiting on about Merc having 2 German drivers despite Merc plus Fry saying that wasn't happening....
Grrrrrr.......
Can you not ask Santa?
i could... but who knows how long they'll be around for now.. *is in a really bad mood and needs cheering up*
i didn't say hi.. sorry. so... hi.
Do we think part of Merc buying into Brawn is because McLaren never ran a German driver?
They got through throttle up without blowing up. Phew
Solid rocket boosters jettisoned
fantastic!
SRB separation
Other parents were upset with me last year because my 6 year old was going around telling other kids Santa wasn't real.
"Can you not ask Santa?"
I wonder if Ross or Norbs will play Santa at the Brawn/Merc Christmas party....
We are not hearing much radio traffic
You told a 6 year old the secret? What a spoilsport!
Hi Lou! :D
Astronaut.... Box Box Box...
No
I told him no such thing.
He figured it out on his own.
hi
:D
They just got told they can't pit
How???
Video froze
Jeez... don't waffle or anything ;)
"Do we think part of Merc buying into Brawn is because McLaren never ran a German driver?"
No... it's because Macca:-
1. Are building their own car in competition and
2. The did the dirty on Merc when they sold out some of Ron's shares to the Middle East crowd who do what Ron and Mansoor say.....
ok here on the windows media feed
Back again
:D
What Lady Snowcat said
They can now make Zaragoza should they lose two engines
Can you elaborate on point two please?
And they want a Mercedes Factory team
They'll always vote with Ron & his mates, not Mercedes
Mercedes plan was to buy 40% of the shares and gradually take control. Ron and Ojjeh sold half their shares to Mumtalakat to stop Mecr getting control. From that day their relationship changed
Right, I get you now...
Should be close to dumping the external fuel tank now
That separation looked good
He didn't really fall for that "magical fly around the world in 24 hours" stuff.
clearly you didnt show him the google earth gps on christmas eve!
Your son is a cynic!
I think someone needs to rethink their strategy for persuading people to go to ASI :-)
#sidepodspace
Well as launches go that was about as good as it could be. Not the most interesting to watch because there were no problems for them to deal with but for once you have to say great job NASA.
:D
Nah, he just figured it out before most other kids.
"Can you elaborate on point two please?"
Ahhhh....
Yes of course....
In 2006 Daimler looked like it was going to buy the 60% held by Ron and OJ (they already had 40%)....
Then in 2007 the Mumtalakat Company owned by Bahrain, took 15% each from Ron and his chum.... which meant that Ron and OJ didn't need Merc dosh and furthermore they had not lost control (as Mumta looked to Ron and Ojjeh).... soMerc said bye bye to owning Macca... and felt totally stitched up and stuck with 40%....
Yes, I will be signing autographs in the paddock before anyone asks ;-)
Evening happy campers.
Now, if, instead of Santa, it was Jedi Knights who came around and gave presents to the good kids, and Darth Maul visited the bad kids, he might have beleived that :)
I recall that now - I saw that as Ron protecting the team from being bought out by Mercedes...
Makes sense, and I would like to see McLaren build their own engines... lord knows there's enough engineers to go round!
i think you need to show him polar express ;)
#sidepodspace
Nothing more to see today. Tomorrow the crew will carry out the inspection of the underside of the shuttle to make sure the heat shield survived the launch.
They dock with the ISS on Wednesday although I have no idea of the time yet and on Thursday they carry out the first spacewalk.
hehe. apparently a 6m² stand is approx 2k for four days!
How many microphone stands is that?
He's seen it many times, although not recently.
eleven and a bit.
You are going to have to do a monthly sidepodradio day next year to pay for that
This reindeer stuff isn't very MFC is it?
i was hoping it would be more like £600 :(
What have I missed :S
Trade show stands are always a rip off. The first time I organised one I was gobsmacked by the cost and the cost for all the extras. It cost us more to rent a fridge for a week than it would have done to buy it but rules said you couldn't supply your own. etc.
was hoping to make autosport international a bit more exciting, by getting a sidepodstand there, for people to hang out at.
slightly more pricey than expected.
YES!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god it was pure awesome!!!! He shook my hand and said it was nice to meet me. I nearly exploded with joy. I'm not allowed to mention it anymore though. Apparently I've been going on about it..... :D :D :D
Ah...
Shame, that would have been a laugh. Which reminds me....I must buy tickets
Not sure you're even still around but yes there has been much sortage.
We failed on the shoebuying front though.
And Christine can do F1 minute live every hour in front of an audience
omg!
I haven't seen a mention of it. Tell me more. Did you taste his cooking?
Should Christine meet Franck?
That is not a no so it is going to happen. ASI 2011 - The Christine show
Wait a minute...
You mean you're not having a completely separate sidepodcast international?
An F1 Minute? ;)
If you have a stand you need something to attract a crowd
hold on... i may have found better prices. you get customise you space:
£275 per m2 plus VAT
how small can we get away with?
You have to build up to that
gotta run before you walk :)
...
...
that isn't right is it?
Two M2? that's enough for a table and a sign surely??
How vertical can you go in your m2?
Sure, if you like
doesn't say.
You would need at least 4 and probably 6
I like the philosophy
1m2 x 20m high, think tall ;-)
also, that might be £275 per m2 plus VAT per day. not sure?
You need more space than that.
Well I saw him walking the other way and absolutely screamed to my friend "IT'S MICHEL ROUX" and he heard and came over chuckling to himself..... I had some food from his stall but nothing he had personally made boooooo! I should have said something intelligent but no I was more like "Michel...... I ooooh it's Michel"
James Allen has posted about Brawn and Mercedes etc. He makes a comment at the end about server issues - which might be worth some of you here who know what you are talking about to feel free to comment on...
What, tennis umpire high chair tall?
that puts us back over £1,000 :(
You could park a cherrypicker in front of the stand and raise visitors to the level that interested them
And what is that telling you?
That is ridiculous
Christine stood on top of all the electronics via step ladder
possibly not. there's very little info:
http://www.autosport-international.com/trade/exhibiting
:D :D
Surely there's a number you can call to enquire?
you're not liking this idea?
It was very nice of him to come and speak to you rather than get security to evict you as a nutter.
6??? my room is 9m2 and my old room was 5m2. What do you want to put in all that space?
I'm guessing so if it turns out to be that expensive.
course. but i needs to know now :)
I'm curious why you want to give money to a trade show you fundamentally dislike. I would have thought Goodwood would be better.
There is the matter of a few cars driving up and down a hill. That might turn attention a way just a tad.
well. at autosport you don't have to battle the weather. and i want to like, it's just not very good. so am trying to make it interesting for myself, mostly.
It is plus VAT but it's £250+VAT for the space only - i would bet there is a minimum square metreage though.
It doesn't say per day and no-one wants to sell stands on a daily rate as it causes them way too much work. They sell them for the duration and it is up to you if you don't use it.
What am I thinking?? Goodwood is outside!
With ASI, it's just trade stands and the only driving is done in a small makeshift arena. Thus, apart from that, there are no moving cars so static displays are all they can look at.
i quite liked the idea of a fascia nameboard?
:P
i like your thinking.
You could portable
oh good. so 3m squared is too small?
You could GO portable
Like Sidepodchat in Hyde Park?
Send someone flyering around the arena...
how much space do we need to get a table and maybe 8 chairs in? enough to record some podcasts.
just need a table for the laptop and somewhere to recharge things?
What are you going to have on the stand and what you plan to use it for. It also depends where it is. If you are on a corner you have twice as much open area for the same area
You could also get a couple of the pictures you've taken blown up and put on display as well.
oh. a double bed is 2m x 1.4-1.6 so about 3m2. try out if you can fit your kitchen table on there.
"hold on... i may have found better prices. you get customise you space:
£275 per m2 plus VAT
how small can we get away with?"
Well a sq metre could have a table with a laptop on it with webcam and instructions....
You could then interact remotely with attendees....
What you want to do is tie up with a company that wouldn't mind some live podcasting from their stand.
i have nothing planned. i like the idea of a corner though.
They need a double bed in their stand? ;-)
:D
Or put 8 people on a bed. That would attract a crowd
Live comment with them
Woah, I don't like where that's going!
maybe. but what we want is somewhere for everyone to be able to meet up, no?
"can we do a podcast from your stand, oh, and invite everyone we know" might be hard to swing?
That is a good idea. I wonder who would be interested in that.
Well.... depends on who's on the bed....
Is it some kind of tribute to James Hunt?
you need one of those companys with a huuuuuuuuge stand
and I should definitely stop there :) *smacks self*
Hijack the Autosport Stage.
"Excuse me Jenson, I know you're on now but we have a podcast to record..."
You need a cafe area - they often have a dj or something - why not make it motorsport relevant
"infact, how would you like to be on one?"
It might work for something like AUTOSPORT or F1 Racing where they have a huge area and another 8 people is going to make no difference whatever
Quiz quiz quiz!!!
F1 Racing? Stuart C! Maybe...
well, if Mav is going to be there anyway..
And Jackie.
GP+?
and do the answers after each question to keep it flowing
Is Joe even going to be at ASI this year?
doubt it
Don't know, hence the question mark.
Right, I have to fill my head with numbers. Don't let me come back before 11.
I shooed you ages ago!
Shoo!
Good evening!
Crazy day...there was a bus crash on the way back from school, where a tractor hit the bus with it's grabby thing at the top, WITH the kids in it. Apparently, two people are in shock in A&E and another has bad spinal injuries...it really hit me that I know people on that bus...
Damn, hope everyone gets well soon :(
oh man! thats terrible :( hope they get better
Bloody hell! I hope you are ok?
Have you got a link to a news article, just out of interest?
Hope they get better :-(
it's just so scary that I know people on the bus, and, if had hit in a different place, I might not have seen them again...I'm shaken...
Yikes!
it scared me! I went on facebook to discuss Xmas stuff, and suddenly I saw all these statuses about the bus...
In F1 news...I am very upset Mercedes GP...
I kinda wanted Brawn to stay independant too... but if it secures their future it must be a good thing
And TBH nothing changes ... just the person putting the big bucks in.
but it doesn't even have Brawn in it's name...
And it's being cheeky enough to say that it wants an all German line up...
Be right back...need to go buy beer..
I didn't see, I just heard about it. I am, today, so thankful that I walk! :)
what kind?
hehe...have fun!
Might have been nice if they went Mercedes Brawn, like with BMW Sauber.
Depends on who you believe
eurosport
I disagree, this'll be Mercedes' team, not Brawns
That was the plan with McLaren. Mercedes were not going to make that mistake again. They were always going to use their own name as soon as possible.
Therein lies the problem ;)
it depends whether it's mercedes gp with Jenson driving or not..
.....
....
*continues to mumble and complain*
......
How about believing the actual people?
There has been a lot of speculation that the new Mercedes team may field two German drivers next season?
I read some speculation and I understand this because we could not give this information earlier. But this will be an international team for Mercedes-Benz is a global player. If you look back in our history we have very often been criticised for not having a German driver, so we were always open and we took the driver decision always together with McLaren. This will be the same in the future. We want to have the best ones and we definitely do not want to have the pure German team - it's an international Silver Arrows team and we want to have the best drivers in the car.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80175
"And it's being cheeky enough to say that it wants an all German line up..."
In the Q&As with Mr Daimler and Norb they say it won't be all German... and Nick Fry said the same on the Beeb....
Brawn are world champions though and therefore too strong a brand - everyone would have called them Brawn for short whereas BMW Sauber were generally referred to as BMW.
Brawn's with Honda's money, you mean?
Well cept for me, but that makes sense. I see whatcha mean.
It will be. It is a certainty. There is no other possibility.
Stop mumbling and complaining and go watch Jenson in the triathlon on 4OD.
Don't forget that Ross never really wanted it to be Brawn GP... they just couldn't think of anything better....
Exactly
The Eurosport F1 app has those words quoted too. It's the so-called pundits and GMM-a-likes that are talking about an all Deustche line up
That's funny - there were loads of names floating around...
Honda sold the team, it wasn't owned by them this year. They just put lots of money in the meter before the season started
"That's funny - there were loads of names floating around..."
But none of them were right... especially if they saw themselves selling out pretty quickly and I recall that was always the plan...
Oh and re the Brawn name ... they had to be careful with Honda sensitivities....
So do you think Mercedes will take over the team? Or will they let 'Brawn' run it?
...and andrew benson.
Andrew Benson would never use GMM sources though!
....oh wait...
He read it in the Daily Mail so figures it must be true
It's a shame that Staedtler pulled out as title sponsor when the credit cruch went huge
they wont have a german line up? (am really hanging on your words here because i so want Jenson to stay....)
i would but i'm watching merlin on iplayer atm.. a
Brawn will be the team principal but Mercedes will be running the company
"So do you think Mercedes will take over the team? Or will they let 'Brawn' run it?"
They have said it'll be up to Ross.... and let's face it you could not have a better Technical Director... not sure if Ross'll be Team Principal.... that could be Norbs....
That well known GMM fan. He likes GMM so much he is providing bull to them
I agree with James
details are in this post sir: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/16/mercedes-set-to-confirm-plans/
They couldn't cash in on his performances this year and they will want to launch their new team with the world champion on board.
Thanks. But press releases and actions are two very different things...
this makes me feel slightly better...
oh and totally off topic.. i've finally seen the pic of Jessica wearing the panda hat at the ROC... lol!!
I think Merc know that Ross is the Shizzle :)
Leave him to it
Evening all
What panda hat? First I have heard of this
Sounds ace :)
Link?
Hey Chris
link hehehe
Evening. I have pizza. It is a good day.
That is kinda cute :)
Ross's commitment to staying seems to have been part of the deal - that doesn't sound like they don't want him
johnny herbet at silverstone on the gadget show now!
Is James Allen no based in the UK?
"Nov 16th, 2009 @ 09:29 pm › James Allen"
maybe. seems cut and dried to me.
oooh
Definitely
Nice hat too
Hi Alison, home now?
if she has then she borrowed rubens jet too
I had sirloin in mashed potato with bacon and a tomato-based sauce baked in the oven... proper winter food!
Not in Cumberland yet until next week. Enjoying my time off work a ridiculous amount.
Good stuff Alison.
Good for you!
I thought your trip was work related.
spending time with Nick IS hard work ;) :P
By the way, I love wireless keyboards - not only is my desk tidier but I have my feet up and the KB on my lap while watching Motorsport and commenting!
Evening all. Just had to administer medicine to one of the cats, who had got herself into a fight. Grrr!
I'll be doing Saturday and Sunday on the F1R stand. Not sure about Friday; am booked in at the Red Bulletin for the whole of January so may have to look for a stand-in.
The Gadget show has postal votes?!?!
fab news!
about the booking... not the stand-in...
:( Pizza got burned by the stoooopid oven :(
on the the plus side we are about to watch NEMO
That's just wrong!
#notMFC
Crispy pizza ROCKS!
Did he have any choice in the matter?
Hahahaha you're telling me....
that must illegal?
Captain or Finding?
...We?
It was the oven's fault? Do you think that is what Michel would say?
so people can use their gadget pens
Bizarre. Mind you, during the postal strike I got so nostalgic for normal service that I took to dropping rubber bands on my garden/path/driveway.
:D
Michel would most certainly be understanding. Also he'd have cooked foir me. No opportunity for me to burn anything!!
Eh?
I took to dropping mail on my garden/path/driveway
Finding. I've never seen it before. I'm skeptical. Watching under protest.
Tis fab, enjoy
Nick is making you watch Finding Nemo?
It's surprisingly good!
Posties wrap up groups of mail in 'em and they get scattered everywhere
I had to write spam to myself!
I've never seen it, but I'd like to. Most of these Disney/Pixar/You-Know-Who animated features are really good.
I thought you meant the submarine thing not the fish. Is that not for 5 year olds?
That is pure speculation #gmm
:D :D :D
Must dash - need to find out why my Wii's mouth is glowing.
we complain now but the huge piles of red rubber bands building up will save us from rising sea levels.
mark. my. words.
Works on both adult and child levels like most Hollywood animation these days
That is a non-denial denial
Right, got ya.
What? Like "Cars"?
Danish posties don't or you live on a street with about 4 houses?
No, we live in an apartment building!
Not my fave that one. Wall*E is a wonderful piece of film
Me too, your posties must be tidied then
Mmmmm... danish posties
*tidier
:)
That and Ratatouille are the only ones I haven't seen.
BTW - my dad knows someone who works at WETA Digital and they are working on Avatar. They're doing 16 hour days to finish it but they reckon it's going to look amazing!
Yeah I must admit I've never seen a rubber band lying around. But then it's Denmark - people don't litter and are generally quite tidy (until they start drinking!)
:D
I really want to see that but am so not keen on this 3D nonsense. I guess I should see one before judging it as a failed gimmick
Also much better than anticipated
Will it be in 3D only? I've never seen a 3D movie before...
How does someone like my wife see it when she wears glasses anyway?
Why do they do that?
The Queen is in 3D on Channel 4 at the moment.
The Queen? Why? Does it make the action scenes better?
At the IMAX, probably
With care not to scratch her own glasses apparently
The wrapping up or the scattering everywhere?
a) Post for the same group of houses are grouped together to make everything easier for them to find.
b) Laziness
'Ello
Weren't you already here?
Group blocks of letters together, like in the same building and stuff
No idea, it's the coronation. I guess it looks like the crown is going to hit you in the face and she waves the sceptre over your head. I'm not watching it so this is all guesswork.
I was, but I left for beer.
Weird.
Why is that weird?
:)
Oooh, a London red double-decker bus nearly ran me over. Still no wiser as to why they filmed it in 3D though.
I don't get this Queen in 3D thing...
It's not in 3D??
It is now
The last one I saw was Jaws 3D on telly in the 80's
I'm told things are a little better now but I'm not really interested if it's more 'immersive'. Make a good film in the first place, I'll be immersed
I seem to remember watching Eastenders in 3D for either Children in need or comic relief many moons ago
Evening all. Did everyone miss my scoop last night? I have almost certainly tracked down what Mr C really does for a living. Evidence, look out for Rapids Johnson and all will become clear.
Lord no, sounds horrendous
Watched a panto in 3D, not really all that inthralling to be fair.
LOL
so, just watching the trailer (in 2d), and i conclude the bits with real people in look great and the rest... not so great.
Are you talking about Avatar?
Oh yes it was.
Seems like a lot of extra work. In Finland and I think in Germany too (never looked inside a postman's bag to be honest) they just put a divider in between groups of mail. Also in Finland all postboxes are on the right side of the road independent of which side of the road you live on (at least in the sidestreets)
yes.
It might have been behind us.
Oh no it wasn't
"It's behind you" not all it's cracked up to be?
I once saw Frank Bruno in a pantomime - God it was weird!
It got a bit boring watching a father and son duo I've never heard of doing anything else but that panto.
Real people? Thought it was all animated-ish. Will have to check out again
it's Cameron, therefore - obligatory viewing
Unfortunately for Schumi, DC didn't believe us
:D
Ooooh, looked at this years list. Remember Scooch from Eurovision...
I notice Mr C is ignoring my research so I think I'm on to something :)
3D panto doesn't seem so bad now does it?
it required effort. what's the second i have to scrub to?
You sir, need to raise your viewing standards ;)
Exactly... 16 minutes of kids tv!
:)
Junior Eurovision this week...
This country is going to he'll in a handbag and via a phone vote :(
I'll let you rest that the most western country involved is Belgium.
2'20"
But it's on TV here and folk will watch it
Nuff said
Is Denmark in it? They love that crap here and the music sucks!
Nah, Sweden is though.
Things ya shouldn't do, go on the website, now after looking at all the participants, I feel old.
It's the first sketch. Would I make you watch the whole programme?

Fair enough!
trust me, my panda was much bigger.
i think i've caught up with the day's events. now for must comment monday.
It looks like a PS3 game with some kind of conservation message underneath. I still need convincing.
PANDA!
some woman from lost, and a chat from friends.
agreed.
I've done the rounds where I can.
Distinct lack of comments on F1TP though. I must be doing something wrong, not even had any spam today.
Thats what I was going to do tonight, blog.
If it wasn't James Cameron I wouldn't be excited. Now that he's finally over his Titanic obsession, he can carry on being fantastic again
will get there shortly.
Oh no, that came out wrong. It wasn't a plea for comments!
Michelle Rodriguez & Giovanni Ribisi (who is stellar btw)
yup. her and him.
:)
I haven't done any reading today as I was too sick earlier. But I don't just reserve Monday for commenting as I have been commenting all week ;)
Later this week I shall start blogging again too.
See what I mean? He might as well admit it.
I should have blogged about Mercedes and Brawn tonight really... I just haven't had the motivation today to do any writing which kinda sucks :(
You get days like that....
you still have time..
I'm totally gonna be there. In front of a screen the size of 4 F1 motorhomes!
I'm gonna leave it till tomorrow and head off I think. I'm just too tired and allsorts of annoyances today have worn me out.
Anyways, night all.
oooh talking of blogging. i posted it reaaaally early this morning but no-one was around...
www.feederseries.co.uk
Formula two guide i've written
night
Oookay preliminary opinion, I'm liking the NEEMOO!
Yeah, that happens. You'll be fine in the morning
(Well, I wasn't when BMW quit, but that was because I also had the flu)
Night Lukeh
Night Lukeh.
Night sir.
night :)
See, it's the biz
I'm off too. It's been a weird day. See ya guys!
byeee
Night Luke, Night Gavin.
See you later.
I doff my cap with your efforts by the way. I thoroughly enjoy the categories leading up to F1, probably more so in fact.
See ya mate.
I wouldn't go that far :P
ditto. I have no idea why i stick with F1, but i do, club, national and feeder racing is where its at
It picks up
It gets better
G'night Gavin
This film has the highest body count of any Disney animation.
Anybody mentioned the Indian GP today?
http://www.jaypeegreens-sportscity.com/masterplan_of_sports_city.html
i wish i could understand the appeal you guys see. all i hear are people aiming/wanting/begging to be in f1. it's like no-one wants to be part of what they have, they're just passing through.
at the mercedes-benz event, all the DTM drivers were "this is the best car... err... well it's not quite f1... we all want to do f1".
Did yesterday yes.
I thought that was Mulan?
Ah, didn't search yesterdays
That looks like another overtaking free zone
If you count all of Nemo's siblings then no.
anti clockwise I assume
"Thousands of Mongols buried alive by the title character" apparently
Perfect. Why bother with existing track, when you can make more rubbish ones.
1. can you blame them? f1 is "the pinacle of motorsport" (although i may beg to disagree in hte future)
2. the racing is SO much better than f1
3. most of the people are really really nice, really approachable. heck i email one of them and he emailed me back on his blackberry within 10 minutes
4. they arent dictated by sponsor politics and pr people.
etc
Same really.
I've seen some jnr races supporting other events. Every now and again you see someone who looks like they'd stand out.
At the BTCC race at Thruxton a couple of years ago both Christodoulo cousins looked good, in that respect it appealing.
The appeal apart rom the on track action itself is to try to identify who is going somewhere, who couldn't go anywhere if Bill Gates gave him all his money and who is really special
I wish I could understand the horse-blinkered approach to those who just watch F1 and nothing else.
The racing is better as they're actually fighting for their reputations most of the time.
It's more accessible to the fans and a darn sight cheaper.
Watching someone's career blossom is often fascinating to watch (been watching Daniel Ricciardo for the past two years).
Etc etc.
Seriously, choose a single category for next year and just see how you get on following it.
i don't blame them. i just watch that pinnacle.
Did anyone spot this in the Q&As....
"Norbert, when will you be able to name your drivers?
NH: I would rather hope next week, but don't kill me if it [takes] a couple of weeks longer."
Please form an orderly queue behind me to kill Norbert if it takes A COUPLE OF WEEKS to sort out the drivers.....
Aghhhhhhh......
If the silver areas are run offs I would say clockwise
the biggest problem with f1 is that there isnt enough spaces, and fair enough, you dont want overcrowding etc etc. but the higher you get, the more that money dictates where you go next. there are so many good drivers that dont ever get into f1.but its how it is, and life isnt fair
Plus watching several racing categories makes Autosport even better value for money! ;-)
That is a really good idea
That's true. It's an even worse design then.
hehehehehehehehehe
i don't have time, nor the inclination really.
i like le mans, but mostly because it only comes around once a year and doesn't take too much time.
The layout is awful
yeah its clockwise
:)
I couldn't get organised enough to watch Franck when he was racing on a regular basis. Franck!
and thats where your half right and half wrong. le mans is one event. there is a whole series of them, plus a whole series of american racing. plus this year they've added formula le mans to hte lms series. i am v.excited
Le Mans? One event? Tsk! Tsk! Mr Christine! :-D
*faints*
i guess, comparatively a lot of the racing looks cheap. the formula bmw things just look like kids stuff. you can't look up to them, only laugh at them.
its because they ARE kids. literally. thats the first series many people get into. its their first car series, they have to learn somewhere
That turn leading into the hairpin is just a complete waste of space, okay on the scale of hockenheim but at this scale nobody is going to be able to get close at that point as it's too tight - and yet Tilke will be expecting to use the following straight for overtaking.
worse. layout. yet.
i see that. but where's the appeal in watching them? the cars look lost on track.
I follow F1 religiously, IRL and NASCAR when I can (or if I happen to catch it on) and the BTCC if I get into it that year.
It's a big ask to keep in touch with it all!
i dont watch them unless im told to watch a specific race
Ah, so you have to love Australians. Here, young drivers aspire to V8 supercars or maybe that F1 thing. *giggle* :D
Just done a chunk of work (wow, I understood it!) and you're having my type of convo ;-)
i would tell you to shoo. but its totally the convo you'd enjoy
fair enough. but bigger cars aren't that much better. if WSR was any good, they wouldn't give the tickets away for free would they?
WSR is the event, its a marketing exercise by renault. Renault 3.5 is the biggest renault series.
Would people ever pay to see the 3rd or 4th tier of racing? I doubt it.
Right, time for bed. I'm in Glasgow tomorrow, flying up from Southampton at half 8. I'll give you all a wave as I fly over you.
Night!
What, like they do at the Bahrain gp? :-)
That depends which track you see them on. The appeal is that they are all giving it 100% all the time and battle for every position because there careers depend on it. There is no-one on cruise and collect and whatever category you choose will have more overtaking than F1
I tip my cap to any driver, of any age, who is able to take to the track and work hard at making a go of a career in racing. It's like talent scouting, watching the cream rise to the top, whilst watching some *proper* racing for a change with... with... overtaking [swoons]
Remember, I'm in Newcastle, not Wales. :)
See ya
Marketing by Renault innit? Good at that.
Bye Adie
Bingo! House! Steven wins.
You get to witness drivers move from being total rookies to accomplished F1-ready racers. I find that really satisfying. There is a notable improvement in form for most drivers which is much harder to see in F1.
On the way there are some great drives from the likes of di Grassi, Hamilton, etc, etc which F1 fans just don't know about.
There is also the element of knowing about someone before the specifically-F1 fan does..
Are we absolutely certain that F1 fans want overtaking?
People pay to see club racing all the time
Seems to me, that's a problem with F1, not a good thing about the juniors.
i caught lewis hamilton half way through his gp2 season, it felt good to see him come to f1, you develop more of a knowledge and a respect for them when they've come from lower
you all seem to agreeing on the same thing.
i have no desire to be a talent scout though?
FBMW is too low even for me and I'm crazy for this stuff. The lowest I usually go is F3 and then only a few times a year. The exception is my annual BTCC visit (which didn't happen this year) where I try and pay attention to F.Renault 2.0.
Some of htese guys are doing degrees whilst having a full time racing career, others have it has their full time career, will they make it? probably not, but they'll try as hard as they can and i respect them very much for that
I do think there should be a properly promoted effort at a Pan-European series as a destination in itself, the way IRL is, now that F1 is going global.
Would you not like to watch racing where you don't need live timing, an iphone app and live commenting to know what is going on?
Apart from F3, the ultimate aero-dependency series :-)
Have fun...
i LOVE those things.
You're not cool enough then. We'll all be smug when Ricciardo/Baguette/Bianchi makes it to F1 :-)
That's half the fun right there!
FFord, F3, and F1. the only 3 development single seater series in teh world. and F3 and FFord are the closest and have the smallest budgets
best not mention this to lou:
Jenson Button has agreed terms to join McLaren on a £6m-a-year deal and could sign his formal three-year contract to partner Lewis Hamilton in an all-British line-up within the next few days.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/nov/16/jenson-button-joins-mclaren-contract
thats not proper racing. proper racing is when your glued to hte screen, not the laptop or iphone
Just to add that for me it is more about the season-long journey than it is about individual races. There can be a lot of rubbish races but the story coming out of it is interesting in its own way, just like F1.
Watch for Wayne Boyd in F3 next season. This season was disappointing but I saw him in FFord last year and the boy is class
Agreed on that one, he pulled some great moves there
i would have thought it would be attending the event, getting up close with the cars, not watching on the television?
Did lukeh photoshop that picture? :D
Wowzers. I thought it was just me who finds commentating/twittering/live timing sometimes just too distracting. There's TOO much information in F1 going on. Sometimes, less really is more.
nope, watching on tv is still awesome.
Can we keep the commenting?
I would've loved to see Kimi on form at McLaren
Say it ain't so
strongly disagree: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/15/things-i-learnt-from-watching-franck/
OMG!!! Alan Henry is very credible but I still struggle to believe this.
why?
i much prefer to watch 2 cars and judge the distance at the end of hte lap rather than sectors. and if there are cars racing, they will overtake. not so much in f1
I have his autograph somewhere from Oulton Park this year!
Still not believing it until we get real proof. Newspapers like the guardian are wrong on a daily basis
i know. and might make benson correct, which is extra annoying.
Yeah but you hate print as well. Just admit it, your antithesis of me!
same as f1, if your at the track you get the action but dont see all hte racing, if your watching on tv, you stay warm and can see it all!
I'm going to have a complete rethink of how I watch F1 next year. This year I was tweeting, reading commnets, noting things for the blog, so much that I lost the thread of the race. Not doing that again.
and live timing lets you understand even more. i don't get why you're drawing the line at TV?
If this is all true - I think Mclaren are coming out of all this well.
Absolutely. My point is that in the junior championships you can by and large see what is going on without someone calculating fuel loads for a driver who has not looked competitive for the race so far
and jenson has royally flushed his career down the loo.
what? im not. i just prefer to keep my full attention on the racing not my phone/live timing. its just pure racing
he's never been very good at this team change malarkey
Joe hasn't called it yet, neither has Autosport or James Allen
bingo
also, that would mean lewis has the number #2 on his car again... right?
Quick plug, horrendously biased, but:
http://onetimoglock.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/throwing-spanners-in-the-works/
Telegraph have the story too but are sitting on the fence.
To be fair, if they put the proper info on the screen you don't need to look away.
it's not pure racing. it's watching it on the telly.
haha. love it
Actually (and I will make enemies here) I think Jenson was just lucky to be where he was. I dont think he's in the top 4 drivers. He took his chance when he had it.
It was another reason why I gave up The Red Bullog. I spent the races looking at the live timings like I was in the Stock Exchange or something, and lost all enjoyment from it all. Spent the last two races just watching the racing.
pure racing dosent mean you have to be there
i may burst into tears.... *struggles not to swear on a family friendly site*.
......
*tries to remain calm and wait for official confirmation*
..... this reminds me of last year... i hate the off season :(
Don't give up, Mercedes might sign Glock or Sutil as their second German driver
Apparently we have differing definitions of 'pure racing'.
For me, it is when the on-track action is so good that you can't take your eyes off the screen to do any commenting or anything
Totally agree with you, Brawn built a hell of a car and he took the opportunity at the start of the season brilliantly.
i'm lost as to why tv is acceptable and iphone isn't, but i'll concede you have your reasons.
Poor off-season. Gets the blame for everything.
He will probably end up paying McLaren to go back to Brawn.
The big question if this is true is what happens to Kimi?
Yes
Because the iphone is tiny, the TV is big?
to be fair it's not exactly been kind to me these last few years!!
Hanging out with Ben & Jerry
its not not acceptable. but for me, i hate having all that extra stuff, i just want the racing, a split time each lap, and 2 guys going at it like their lives depend on it.
Fiat Punto?
he'll be the number #2 driver in the #2 car. i... might... cry... too!
:D
also, you are all #mfc and i am really not
I don't think he is a great driver. I think he will struggle with Lewis
I'd suggest it was more like Honda not being kind to you.
I disagree
even at the track i need kanagroo tv and live comments.
this is all honda's fault! stupid honda.
exactly!
i know what you mean... but i know he'll claim it none the less.
If they sign Glock that could open up the Renault seat for Franck
Live timing is essential. I hate watching a recording.
One thing BMW did right, announced it in the middle of August. Get a unknown buyer and wait.
at the beginning of the season i used to have all the windows up, but now i just watch it on its own. its great
Why would Lewis claim to be the #2 driver? Surely he'd proclaim to be the better (and try to prove it) if not equal to Jenson
And that makes everyone happy.
Oh lou, err Button can stay at Brawn, Glock to McLaren.
No, that makes Amy not happy as Raikkonen can go there.
Glock to Renault, and umm, Montagny to Manor. Sorted.
What I said is that in the junior categories you do not need an iphone app etc. I am not saying it is bad simply that F1 is so complicated that you often can't work out who is where until the final pit stop
that doesn't appeal in the slightest. but at least i have a better understanding of why you like the smaller race categories. cheers.
Well that should change next year.
i just think he's addicted to the phrase. it's like his own personal "for sure".
Actually, it's the financiers' fault
Last season Jenson ended up in a championship winning car and if this is true then next season he is going to be in the car most people expect to be the best
the iphone tells me where on the track everyone is. how does complexity make a difference? i just like information.
its not just 'smaller' race categories. its pretty much everything apart from f1
i honestly don't think he'll even get the chance to challenge for the championship if he is at Mclaren next year, race winning car or not.
Are we still talking about Lewis? I really don't see that
you don't follow nascar do you? cause if you did, that would be v.cool.
he didn't have the #2 on his car in '09.
Oh that's a load of tosh. Mclaren always support both drivers. If he can beat Hamilton, he will.
seconded.
Yeah, look how that worked out for him ;-)
thats because you all hate lewis :P
its a different team, if he's good, he'll get team respect. its not going to be a ham vs alonso situ again
Of course not, he was world champion.
i disagree. the team is moulded around lewis.
that's not a complaint, that's just the way it is.
Yeah, I'm lost now :)
Tell that to David and Heikki
Agreeing with paul again, there will be no bias in that team. If he's quick enough, McLaren will support him.
i don't hate him.
it's not very different at all is it?
Except the ones called Fernando...
its the same whatever team he'd go too. just how alonso will find ferrari is massas team
:D :D
The difference is that in no pit stop racing if someone is in 9th place the only way he is going to appear at the front is if he passes the others. In F1 he can be 20 seconds behind and everyone else makes a pit stop so you need a lot more info to understand what is happening
Neither we faster than their team mates though
I see no evidence that Mclaren favor one driver, or would harm the other driver. Why would they?
because they weren't supported by the team
Alonso didn't get on in that team because he expected lewis to just get out of his way.
If Jenson goes there then he knows wahts in store
Pah, if you believe his point of view.
Alonso will embarrass Massa if the car works for him
Go ask Coulthard that.
mclaren have always had a number one and a number two driver. as far back as i remember. just the way they roll.
Huh? Two drivers who were never on the pace of their team mates?
It was moulded round Prost till Senna unmoulded it.
And had less talent IMHO
Any time they've tried otherwise has ended badly.
See Senna/Prost and Hamilton/Alonso.
...and they are fickle. either way. still a #1 and a #2. they just swapped positions.
I disagree.
thats the same with every team though, even if its only in a little way
A bit, yeah. I do think Heikki got stamped on before he could bed in at the team. I also think David was better than his results show.. maybe not a lot though.
I'm not saying they won't prefer Lewis to be faster, just DC & Heikki weren't as naturally quick as their colleagues
Perhaps Jenson wants to be the next Rubens.
i disagree with that
That's not true. As soon as a number one establishes himself he gets the backing but he has to establish himself. Alonso couldn't so he lost out
exactly. he expected lewis bow down.
DC wasn't aggressive enough for me
in 2010:
- rubens will be the number one driver
- jenson will be the number two driver
didn't see that one coming.
i don't hate him. i dislike his personality, he's a good driver. It's Mclaren's bias towards Lewis i don't like.
If Jenson gets a choice he should stay put, in the team that is moulded around him.. that he helped develop..
it wont be the Ham vs Alonso situ again because Jenson isn't Alonso, and wouldn't act out of line like that i shouldn't have thought.
Yes, exactly. Show me a championship winning team where this has not happened. If Jenson is better, he'll get the support, just as he did at Brawn.
Jenson will be ahead though
:D :D Somehow that's karmic.
he wasn't fast enough
He was a lover, not a fighter. Literally.
also true.
Also true
in the garage yes. his car will be before Lewis'
Brawn managed to keep pretty balanced this year, no matter what people say the fuel loads are all there, each driver was given very similar strategies, and they worked well as a team, they just worked.. :(
Reet, bed, much love this discussion but I have to go, fun that there is about half the grid aiming for three seats. Great.
And check the blog : http://onetimoglock.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/throwing-spanners-in-the-works/
lotsa love.
I don't really mind that too much. I prefer the IRL strategies because they seem a bit more clear cut. I like the variety in racing though. Sometimes I want a strategy fight, sometimes I just want some straight out hard racing.
He does seem to chase the money though, he won't shake that reputation if this deal is true
are you trying to make me cry? :'(
Then of course there is the Lewis-still-goes-a-bit-OTT factor, whereas Jenson doesn't seem to, um, push it unless he knows he can...
yep, but rubens was number 2, he didnt get treated differently, but he was
ahead of rubens, who's driving the williams/cossie.
very, very true.
but i love that about lewis
course not. sorry.
:)
Either way Jenson is driving a silver mercedes powered car next year.
The blah, blah blah in his head distracted him
#sorrylukeh
Rosberg is Mercedes favoured child for next year, don't think for a moment that Jenson would be the team's #1. It might not show next year but a year down the line?
he just wasnt as good. simple
but not the works mercedes.
Agreed
and why is that? The hair?!
No, the fast one ;-)
"because he's worth it" :D
i don't think rosberg is good enough to beat jenson.
not consistently.
works renault vs red bull again
I hope so
the tag line for Mercedes F1.
PR friendly? Check.
German? Check.
Not Vettel? Check.
Weird isn't it? Surely Mercedes want a top-line race winner?
James Allen thinks Mercedes are gunning for Vettel once his Red Bull term is up
That's what I don't get, Kimi could still sign though
doesn't talk like Elmer Fudd? check.
i think jenson's best hope, if he signs for mclaren, is that lewis bails to mercedes gp in 2011. then he may have the team to himself.
Mercedes will want three cars at some point. that will please Ferrari.
Would you have said that at the end of last year?
i reckon vettel and hamilton. you?
Why should they?
And he's right. They were very eager to supply Red Bull with engines to have some link with him right now. McLaren veoted it, Red Bull went ahead and continued with Renault.
That'd be great
and thats better than jenson hammy how?
he's made way to many daft mistakes this year. he's gotten worse as the car got better.
Wouldn't anyone want that line up?
At McLaren :)
jenson will be at mclaren and will have a years experience with the team.
Vettel is faster and will improve
McLaren had approached Vettel between the '07 and '08 seasons to try and poach him, but Mateschitz was having none of it.
is it too late to change?
No, I'd want Alonso and Hamilton. Err...
Did McLaren veto it? Assumed the FIA did.
:D
No, I think the FIA approved it. Mclaren had the veto.
I'd go with McLaren, the FIA probably didn't get an official query
McLaren did, was part of the terms of their agreement with Mercedes-Benz.
No. Red Bull said last week they would announce their engine soon. The only reason I can see for that is that they were waiting for Mercedes to get out of the McLaren deal
McLaren dropped the ball cos they didn't think Brawn would be competitive this year
McLaren vetoed it
Newey doesn't strike me as the sort of person who wants to compromise his chassis designs this late in the day - so I doubt doing 'a Brawn' would be on the cards.
Plus whilst the Renault engine lacks a bit of peak power, is good on fuel consumption and comes with several financial benefits.
Twingos all round?
Plus with no refuelling, consumption will become a more significant factor.
I think he wants the Merc because it needs less cooling therefore he can pacage it more tightly
From what I can gather, a definite decision was made to run with Renault some 4-6 weeks ago. Might also indicate why all the team were name dropping them in just about every interview and press release in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
Since when does that stop them giving an unofficial veto? :-)
It doesn't, you're right
FIA would've been happy is my guess, McLaren a lot less
But they're talking about equalising power - the end result could well be that the Mercedes ends up the least thirsty.
maybe by taking renault, they've got a better chance of keeping seb?
I'm not sure they would - that's a lot of engines leaving if Mercedes pulled out. It's a different situation now of course and Mercedes have made a big commitment.
Power or power/torque bands?
Dear FIA
Bring Back Tyre War
Bring Back Engine Development
Bring Back Refuelling
That is all.
or rather, they're less likely to lose him.
No, find a way to overtake slower cars
Job done
Not sure even the FIA know the answer to that!
all? You are easily pleased ;-)
Or the question :D
oo oo oo I know the answer, Steven told me.
:)
Machine guns mounted on the front?
I was happiest in 05 and 06.
Paul di Resta?
I also told Lou 3 hours ago that Button was staying at Brawn so what do I know?
Space shuttle launch dates?
but nothing is confirmed 100% yet.... :( there is still hope.... please let there be hope...
Doesn't that mean nobody has vetoed it?
you could still be right.
going to be an agonising couple of days if no announcements are made.
Are you a Jenson fan or a Honda/Brawn fan?
The doohickey looks very odd through 3D glasses
having read joe's comments relating to considering no further blogging. i conclude the simple answer is micropayments.
stupid people won't pay because they're are too dumb to understand the benefits and if you eradicate the stupid people, the problem is solved. {Comment #201}
Unfortunately most intelligent people end up too baffled by the system to be able to get in, or are so demotivated by trying to get in for the sake of an item of information that they give up, if micropayment systems I've seen previously are anything to go by. I find Paypal a mess and that's the simplest micropayment system I've yet encountered.
There has to be a reasonable way of doing it because in the last few years, some African countries have developed a mobile phone micropayment culture amongst their middle classes, but it doesn't seem to have translated into Western internet micropayment systems yet.
both...
?!?
No-one vetoed it for next season. McLaren vetoed it for this season
Oh, ok.
I was going to say that you may be pleasantly surprised if Jenson does move.
There is hope but Alan Henry is not GMM. He is seriously credible like Joe or Stuart
Have you read the actual article?
"...sources close to McLaren hinted: I think Jenson liked what he saw and they liked him too." does not equal "Jenson Button agrees to join McLaren on three-year, £6m-a-year deal"
I'll support Jenson whatever happens.. but i don't want him to leave Brawn/Mercedes/the brackley team.. i've supported them for ages now... will be odd not to support them...
Yep, I know that feeling.
Channel 4 is doing 3D stuff hence 3D glasses. I switched from TV to doohickey and forgot I had them on
you're meant to say 'yes lou there is still hope, keep you chin up and get through the week....'
:(
All of the team personnel will still be there, it'll just have another name.
Jenson for the WDC, Brackley F1 for the constructors?
yes, but Jenson wont be...
:D:D
The overtaking answer = banning aero.
Even the mint ones?
You want Formula 1 Ford don't you? ;)
There is hope
henry says "terms have been agreed".
i guess terms could also have been agreed with mercedes too.
Easier said than done. Even the brake ducts are now aero.
I mean, the orange one can go. Maybe even the original. But the mint one MUST stay
Steel brakes. That would throw a few cats amongst the pigeons.
LOU!
Nothing is official until it's official.
As Joe mentioned - the genie escaped.
...and even then, this is jenson so there's always the CRB.
Gary Anderson's AUTOSPORT rants on brake duct aero apendages are brilliant
Steel drum brakes, no servos
CRB? he going to be working with kids?
Oh no, you didn't!
:D
ooops.
Criminal Records Bureau?
From an '83 Metro
yes. or the contracts recognition board.
ah!
:-)
*sigh* :(
Didn't they have disks? I had a Morris 1500 with disks.
There are ways to do it. Standard brake discs and wheels and a ban on anything else being within 100 mm of the disc or standard caliper
Mansell drove a Metro. For an advert
Apart from the hydraulic pipes of course. And the wheel.
Basically, you'd have to standardise the bodywork or at least put such tight restrictions that it is essentially standardised - I'd rather stick with aero
Drums at the back
Look on the bright side Lou. Whatever happens Jensone is going to be in a car with a number one on it next season and there must have been times when you never thought that would happen.
Besides it looks like he is guaranteed a drive whereas Kimi looks like he has lost out.
That's why I want a standard wheel. There will be suspension arms in the area too.
Oh yes, how could I forget?
Lou - you are allowed to give yourself permission to support more than one driver/team....
Or does that not help?
Ice cream??
SPC = OWG 2011
:D
You don't have to standardise it. You just have to write the rules in a way that stop insane amounts of downforce being generated and make a car following another faster rather than slower than the car in front.
You need high drag cars. Ideally you need something that stops the noses being so low and the ideal way to do that is to put something large at the front. The obvious answer is to put the engine back in the front.
Kimi belongs at Mclaren, Jenson belongs with his team.. it's all wrong. :s
This I cannot agree with. The engine belongs at the back, this is why I drive a VW.
I haven't know such a big driver shake up for a very long time....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0WZSTijeZM
Day 6
In 2000 I learned about the CART regulations. Standardised bottom with two small venturi tunnels creating a small amount of ground effect. It meant the wings could be reduced. It wasn't the entire reason why the racing was so good but it surely helped. I've wanted to see that brought into F1 ever since.
This is why he drives a Beetle... the other VW in the household has the engine in the front..
LPG sighs heavily......
I totally agree and if Jenson signs for McLaren we are right and reality is wrong.
I hate the idea of a front engine but it is the one thing that instantly screws up all existing F1 aero and handling data.
I can't be the only person wanting to quote Pratchett and Adams here? Can I?
wrong place :p
"Laptop with a pink case"
Elbow??
I really ought to know.. although in fairness it has been years since I stopped trying to collect Pratchett books... often wish I hadn't stopped.
We are having peoblems with the bagel attachment. Superb
Douglas Adams should be quoted at every opportunity. I have never read Terry Pratchett
we don't have any ice cream :(
to be honest this is probably the cumulation of the whole load of stress from school and personal life too.
I'm going to go try get some sleep or something now i think, long day of forensic psychology lectures in london tomorrow..
night all :( xx
Don't be put off, he is really very good.
great comment from alia on joe's blog:
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/thieving-from-the-thieves/#comment-6498
tis a point, can joe use the mod button?
Night Lou
Your son is a cynic!
Nah, he just figured it out before most other kids. {Comment #636}
I remember not believing the original Santa Claus story because he was supposed to come down a chimney - and the fire in the solid fuel burner at the bottom of my house's chimney was always lit on Christmas Eve...
Not that this stopped me from believing in Santa Claus, because I came up with an alternative/augmentary theory. I then decided that since there must be lots of people in that situation (or whose houses were simply lacking something in the chimney department), maybe Santa went round those houses at about 11:30pm and got the nearest available adults to help him carry stuff from the sleigh. Then he'd do everyone else's house at midnight, which would explain why he was particularly grateful when such houses provided mince pies and wine for his consumption (my parents never bothered with the wine, but then again the reindeer could fill themselves up with hay and horse food, which not every household can practicably do).
Naturally the adults would not want the children to come outside to see what the fuss was about when this was happening, so they'd pretend they were going on a huge boring shopping trip* and then preparing their own presents to the children... ...or something. Not every child was given the same excuse, or someone would figure out that it was only an excuse, investigate and possibly see Santa at an awkward moment (e.g. when the dog was chasing him).
Getting the children to bed at an early hour was particularly important, because I also believed that Santa and my parents planned where the presents were to go in co-ordination. Conversations downstairs could wake children up if parents weren't careful, which may explain why it was the one time of year my brother and I was given alcohol (heavily diluted but still effective to make us sleepy).
I shared this theory with my class of fellow five-year-olds at the time and they quite liked it (apart from the ones that got completely confused because back then I could imagine a lot better than I could express myself).
As a result of this complicated theory, it took me until I was 15 to figure out that there was no Santa and my parents not only carried my presents to the house and bought a special present, but bought all of them them as well. This was despite obvious clues like my parents asking me to price my own Christmas list when I was 7...
* - This was partially true. It was relatively easy for my parents to get a friend to babysit on Christmas Eve because most of the people they trusted for it didn't work that day, so that was when the big Christmas shopping expedition happened. Things that needed a long time to cook like the Christmas turkey were bought earlier from elsewhere. They just happened to stay out for a while after the shops shut (I still don't know where, but suspect it might have been Grandma's house) to wrap presents and relax a bit before coming home!
I have not been put off. I just never got round to reading him
Ali - did you get my e-mail? :)
Good night, have a good evening
Me too
Night all
You mean you're not having a completely separate sidepodcast international? {Comment #662}
I wonder if the karting venue could be persuaded to do one - they do have a conference room and bar as well as the facilities we used for the karting competition. Could be an idea for one day, if we could sell the tickets...
joe's thoughts on henry's article:
Button signing for McLaren would be a surprise for a number of reasons, but when it comes to McLaren Alan rarely gets it wrong.
ohh, bugger. more here: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/well-maybe-jenson-is-going-to-mclaren/
In other words, it is just as well that Lou has gone to bed, and will be out all day tomorrow....
I think for her sake, she must not see this article. :P
agreed. joe right about a rosberg/heidfeld line-up being weak too.
can they call rubens back?
She really knows how to say what is on her mind. Well done Alianora
Doubt it.
CRB says no.
:)
Hmmm - further thought...
There was a rumour that Hamilton would have to give at least a seasons notice should he plan to leave. Is it possible that he's given such and we just haven't heard yet?
(LPG doubts this, but now sits back to see if a certain 'news' service runs with it...)
:D
Rubens is gone. The only big name option they have is Raikkonen
they need him. but he wouldn't accept what button wouldn't, surely?
*applause*
Ali - did you get my e-mail? :) {Comment #1298}
Yes I have, and I've just sent you the invoice via e-mail. Thanks for persuading your dad to come too :)
Heh, wasn't hard. All it took was one text and he was there :P
So yeah, both me and Dad will be racing. :P
excellent
Here too.
Is there anyone else apart from who's on the list in the Wiki that is coming too? :P
Depends whether he has another option. If I was Mercedes I would be tempted to open the cheque book rather than launch with Rosberg and Heidfeld.
I am.
Cool. I was really asking Ali if there's anyone who's coming apart from us lot at SPC?
Morning all.
Morning Mr G
Ooh, I've never had Mr G before.
Ok bedtime. night all
great comment from alia on joe's blog:
She really knows how to say what is on her mind. Well done Alianora
*applause* {Comment #1314}}
*blushes* Thank you me, Steven and Pat. It was one of those comments that snowballed - it started off with me getting slightly fed up of people not understanding the concept that it's possible to steal something you can't pick up and throw and ended an hour later without me quite knowing how I got there. Glad you like it, and Joe certainly deserves defenders.
Hi Sean
Latest news
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/nov/16/jenson-button-joins-mclaren-contract
Heh, wasn't hard. All it took was one text and he was there :P {Comment #1316}
Glad it was that easy. If everyone who says they're coming and has been invoiced pays, then we will exceed the theoretical minimum numbers to book the venue :)
So is this 100% a sure thing yet?
I found that with my earlier comment on that thread. It ended up quite a lot longer than intended
Not 100% but Alan Henry is very good and Joe has a post saying that Henry is rarley wrong about McLaren
*Tips metaphorical had at the leavers / newcomers*
um, hat
Well, all I can say is that I hope this doesn't mean Kimi will no longer be in F1.
Is there anyone else apart from who's on the list in the Wiki that is coming too? {Comment #1320}
Yes. I've had nine people confirm so far (by confirmed I mean both requested and paid) and I don't think there are nine names on the wiki. However, I've not added their names myself in case they want anonymity.
Thank you for your prompt payment, Scott! I can now confirm that I have exceeded the minimum needed to book the venue, which makes budgeting really easy now ;)
Where are you guys all off to?
Karting meet-up in January!
I always wanted to go karting.
not much to do on must comment monday this week. have i missed anyone?
*ahem* ;)
http://www.feederseries.co.uk/
ahhh! ta.
The site seems quite slow for some reason.
hmm. jon, the article isn't in my feedreader. have i got the wrong rss url? last entry was episode #4.
If you want another one
http://pardonthefrench.wordpress.com/
I was too busy to write anything or read much either, and expect to be for a couple of weeks. I will try to do Thursday Thoughts. When this pesky retake is out of the way I'll be able to do it properly..
ace!
ah i know the problem you have. your problem is taht you have the podcast feed...
http://thefeederseries.wordpress.com/feed/
thats the blog/podcast/everything feed. am gonna try and get that feed as the one on itunes, but wont hold out much hope
ah, cheers. updated.
Oh Pat, i think GP2 has winner getting superlicence, not top 3. but i may be worng
I think that is correct. Top 3 in F2 and the winner of GP2
I thought I saw it in the list posted here the other day but I can't remember.
ah thought so. hense "The winner of the Formula Two championship will get a full test with Williams F1 and a superlicence, controversially the 2nd and 3rd placed competitors will also gain a superlicence."
;)
well, it's not precisely comment-friendly, and it wasn't published on Monday (almost), but

oooh.
