For those who have been expecting a mini series this week, I apologise that there isn't one. We contemplated taking a weekend off (shock, horror!), but decided to do a live show instead. If you're around about 7pm tonight, then tune in, and you never know what we'll be up to. Meanwhile, we're discussing:

  • The French are protesting! F1 Minute reported this yesterday, but just outside of Paris, some tractors gathered to protest the building of a GP track as the area is populated enough and it would just cause chaos. Will their concerns be heard?
  • The F2 championship has expanded to 25 cars now, which bugs me slightly, as it's an odd number. However, I wonder why some series are struggling to find teams to enter, whilst others are having to up their limits to make room for all the potential entrants.
  • If there's anything you would like us to discuss in the show tonight, feel free to offer up suggestions as we'll be trying to keep budget cap talk to a minimum. However, if you're mad about the budget caps, why not leave us a Tremayne style voicemail? The art of Tremayning first occurred here, with examples of the last competition here. Call 0121 28 87225 to send us your thoughts in the style of the angriest journalist around.

That'll do it for now, keep the excellent thoughts coming, let us know what you're up to and I'll see you in the comments.

My mum just came in and asked me when the GP was on today. I had to tell her it's every fortnight. She thought Monaco was today!

Yeah, you have a point. Those 4 races in 5 weeks took it out of everyone. Didn't help they were early morning flyaway races either. But at least it's a good race to look forward to. Monaco just IS awesome :D

    I wonder why some series are struggling to find teams to enter, whilst others are having to up their limits to make room for all the potential entrants. {original entry}

If a series has the basics right, then the three factors I can think of that would make a difference are money, publicity and fashion.

Money - whatever the state of the economy, the amount of finances a team can get to compete in a series compared to how much it costs will always be a factor. The FIA are claiming a really low budget for F2, so teams are thinking that they can do the series in such a way as to get high value.

Publicity - some series are in the news more than others. A series in the news will be filled with teams that generally have an easier time getting a set amount of money than those teams in series people don't hear about very often.

Fashion - Sometimes series do things that make people follow them that cannot be neatly categorised as either monetary or publicity-related things. Most of these are transitory. Perhaps one of its drivers is suddenly very successful in the next series up, reflecting well upon the series from which that talent emerged. Or it had more Chileans than other series the previous year and the sponsors in the next series up suddenly demand Chileans for marketing purposes. These things can make bosses of senior teams pay attention to the junior series despite the reason for their attention not necessarily being there any more.

They did that in NZ a couple of years ago to protest against a 'fart tax' against farmers. They drove the bloody things up the steps of parliament!

    What happened to Ekstrom?

My computer decided to lock up and I had to restart. I came back and Kristensen had won

I'm cheating already, I just remembered I did actually manage to watch eps 1 and 2 so I'm starting on episode 3. Should get it finished before the tennis in 46 minutes time :D

yeah, but also isn't particularly fair on Morrison because he may be really good but we wouldnt know

He was Class B champion in 2000 in a Peugeot 306 and he raced for Honda for a couple of years with the Civic. I don't think he won much, or at all for that matter. Might have won 1 race for Honda.

  • Jon Waldock17/05/2009 at 13:58

Such is life when you are the second driver :(

nah, i dont think so, second driver lets first driver through, and defends his position, but Alan literally turns up and instead of trying to find a setup that works for him, he has to spend every session doing stuff that wont necessarily work for him

They did have very little testing, and Vauxhall are known for going all over the world to test their cars before the start of the season. Give Ford another year and they'll be top 10's with the occational podium, 2 years and they'll be up there, top 5's probably

    Heikkis sister? :D

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:21

There will be a 2010 GP at Silverstone

That's assuming a number of things:

    1. We have proper F1 in 2010 - very likely, but this cannot be assumed right now.

    2. Bernie was bluffing when he said they'd skip Britain in 2010 to give Donington more time - I actually think he meant this one. Anything but Silverstone, really.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:21

We should have a Tremayne competition tonight!

That is what tonight's live show is

  • Scott Woodwiss17/05/2009 at 15:21

Absolutely. Never give away your punchlines.

I'll do mine live too. Though once I get started, you'll probably have to try and stop me!

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:22

Too true, too true. :D The better it is for us then. ;)

    he's bluffing.

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:23

    he's bluffing.

we thought he was bluffing about canada or indy - he wasn't.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:23

That's assuming a number of things

It is the result of watching Bernie pull this garbage for 20 odd years. 10 years ago he gave a 7 year contract to Brands Hatch.

  • me17/05/2009 at 15:24

we thought he was bluffing about canada or indy - he wasn't.

i didn't think he was bluffing about indy. saw it coming several thousand miles off.

bernie is somewhat weakened right now. but he doesn't have to rush into anything though, and neither do silverstone and they won't sell their circuit to him.

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:24

    he's bluffing.

why these guys don't go and set up a proper poker series for themselves instead of messing up F1 ...

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:26

why these guys don't go and set up a proper poker series for themselves instead of messing up F1 ...

they have one - they meet every friday at the force india motorhome. ;)

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:26

why these guys don't go and set up a proper poker series for themselves instead of messing up F1 ...

You can lose your own money at poker. Bernie doesn;t like that

  • me17/05/2009 at 15:26

why these guys don't go and set up a proper poker series for themselves instead of messing up F1 ...

it's the only way he knows how to do business. and to be fair, it works for him.

they're only messing up f1 if you believe every quote and read every headline. take a two steps back and it's a fun to watch.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:29

Are adidas sponsoring the roof or the launch of the roof? All the players seem to be wearing it

well, true, just take the Friday meeting and the reports of no agreement, no progress. and then quietly BBC publishes interviews with both Mosley and Ecclestone that no major F1 sites picked up - both of them clearly stating that the two tier championship idea will be scrapped :-) even Autosport only mentioned this today ...

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 15:31

Does Bernie own any other circuits? I've got a feeling he owns the Hungaroring? Silverstone would be a bit more sensible if its for sale

  • me17/05/2009 at 15:33

all true. in fact the bbc somehow managed not to make a big deal of their very own exclusive.

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:33

I have heard that he owns Hungary but generally he has not bought circuits but has acted as the promoter. That way someone else gets the bills and he makes a fat profit

  • Amy17/05/2009 at 15:34

    !

    that is all.

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 15:34

all true. in fact the bbc somehow managed not to make a big deal of their very own exclusive.

Yeah, and the naming and shaming of Toyota didn't seem to make as much news as I expected.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:35

    he somehow runs Istanbul

I think he managed to get the promoters rights for Istanbul following the politicing of the podium ceremony. He also promoted Spa and one or two others from time to time.

  • Scott Woodwiss17/05/2009 at 15:35

    ! that is all.

Is that because of the tennis?

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:35

all true. in fact the bbc somehow managed not to make a big deal of their very own exclusive.

so the issue now is over the issue of governance, right?

BTW, if ferrari somehow lose their injunction, does that mean they'll still quit in 2010? or will they just force themselves to accept it?

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:35

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 15:36

Yeah but if he owns a few erupoean circuits he can use that to jack up the fees on all the others when he needs to.

  • Kris17/05/2009 at 15:36

BTW, if ferrari somehow lose their injunction, does that mean they'll still quit in 2010? or will they just force themselves to accept it?

no, then they will have to focus on the cost saving measures the teams went to work on

does anyone actually believe that Ferrari would quit F1 ?

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:37

    Not a chance

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:38

Ferrari are going nowhere unless there is a breakaway series

If they lose, then, what is more likely - them realistically staying within the 40M budget cap, or the budget cap getting readjusted?

  • Amy17/05/2009 at 15:38

sit down and tie yourself to a chair

    deuce for the match!

I'm in bed but its all too much, I might fall out.

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:42

If they lose, then, what is more likely - them realistically staying within the 40M budget cap, or the budget cap getting readjusted?

well, the cap isn't really 40 mil ... it is much more. but anyway at the end I think the teams will come next week with an alternative proposal and agree on that with FIA

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:44

well, the cap isn't really 40 mil ... it is much more. but anyway at the end I think the teams will come next week with an alternative proposal and agree on that with FIA

the cap is 40M, but there's a lot of exempted items. the alternative proposal makes sense, but they want to teach max a lesson and make him listen to them before he does anything. just creating and agreeing on an alternative proposal won't achieve that goal.

  • Kris17/05/2009 at 15:45

well, the cap isn't really 40 mil ... it is much more. but anyway at the end I think the teams will come next week with an alternative proposal and agree on that with FIA

I dont really understand why, if Max is really serious about a budget cap, we have this frankenstein proposal that seems to cap sporting expenses (although even then, still not including the drivers) but ignores potentially frivolous back-office expenses.... Maybe he likes the fancy motorhomes too much

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:46

that is true, but for all the number one priority (no matter what they say) is to race next year (unless the mother company already decided to quit F1) . So, I suspect first things will come first.

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:46

perhaps because those aspects may become either impossible to police or hinder f1 becoming more popular (like marketing).

but that would mean two things

    1. nothing will have changed

    2. LDM will lose to Max.

For LDM, #1 is bad enough. #2 just makes it a heck of a lot worse.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:49

If Bernie and Max have both said there won't be a two tier system why not enter without the budgie cap and ignore it.

  • Kris17/05/2009 at 15:50

perhaps because those aspects may become either impossible to police or hinder f1 becoming more popular (like marketing).

But won't we end up with teams spending £40m on the car, £30m on some drivers, and then £200m on chefs, pants and schmoozing? Does that not seem backwards to everyone?

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:50

but that would mean two things

    1. nothing will have changed

    2. LDM will lose to Max.

well, the two tier thing is going to go, Luca will see on Tuesday if he wins or looses in the court. and when it comes to governance, calm heads and wait for the next FIA president elections may also be a way forward ...

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:51

If Bernie and Max have both said there won't be a two tier system why not enter without the budgie cap and ignore it.

Because what now remains is that everyone HAS to follow the budget cap. Otherwise, the new teams can't enter F1.

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:52

But won't we end up with teams spending £40m on the car, £30m on some drivers, and then £200m on chefs, pants and schmoozing? Does that not seem backwards to everyone?

Deloitte (Max's chosen accounting firm) said that such irregular spending can be traced and checked, so they said such scenarios shouldn't be possible.

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:53

But won't we end up with teams spending £40m on the car, £30m on some drivers, and then £200m on chefs, pants and schmoozing? Does that not seem backwards to everyone?

yes, that will happen in some teams, so that is the reason why the cap is not really 40 mil ... some the areas that are outside the cap are to be there only for limited time. but I suspect that the cap will not happen anyway because the teams are not convinced it can be policed. they will come with other costy cutting measures, perhaps agreement on supply of standard parts to independent teams etc etc

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:53

calm heads and wait for the next FIA president elections may also be a way forward ...

unless FOTA can find a credible rival, max will run again and win another term. that's not the right way to go at this point.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:54

But won't we end up with teams spending £40m on the car, £30m on some drivers, and then £200m on chefs, pants and schmoozing? Does that not seem backwards to everyone?

They are tackling the problem the wrong way but that is Bernie and Max for you. They fon't have a clue between them

  • Kris17/05/2009 at 15:54

Deloitte (Max's chosen accounting firm) said that such irregular spending can be traced and checked, so they said such scenarios shouldn't be possible.

Im not talking about teams disguising that fancy new suspension's development as a nice new pair of pants... Im talking about teams actually spending that much on the ancilliaries compared to the racing

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 15:55

Because what now remains is that everyone HAS to follow the budget cap. Otherwise, the new teams can't enter F1.

why ? they can still go and spend 40 mil per season. the only matter is how to make this kind of cars at least a bit competitive and the teams profitable allowing them to invest and spend more in future. and that is what the current teams and FIA should work out

  • Amy17/05/2009 at 15:55

Hilary Swank is giving out the prizes. I'm confused.

Im not talking about teams disguising that fancy new suspension's development as a nice new pair of pants... Im talking about teams actually spending that much on the ancilliaries compared to the racing

Oh. Well, while that is possible, I don't think it's likely. Teams won't spend any more than they need to on schmoozing the VIPs. Remember, that was the first area where teams made spending cuts.

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:57

why ? they can still go and spend 40 mil per season. the only matter is how to make this kind of cars at least a bit competitive and the teams profitable allowing them to invest and spend more in future. and that is what the current teams and FIA should work out

The budget cap should increase by about 5million every season. Isn't that what they were planning to do to some extent?

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 15:58

The budget cap should increase by about 5million every season. Isn't that what they were planning to do to some extent?

Huh? I thought they wanted to DEcrease the budget cap (through a glide path), not increase it.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:58

Deloitte (Max's chosen accounting firm) said that such irregular spending can be traced and checked, so they said such scenarios shouldn't be possible.

That is always the case unti reality bites. MPs expenses can be controlled then it turns out that one got $13000 to have his moat cleaned out. Another claimed for a house in his constiuency that was 100 miles in the opposite direction and a couple with two houses each claimed for one of them as their second home.

RBS needed £24 billion from the British taxpayer to keep it in business when it thought it was solvent and had 'reputable' accountancy firms auditing its books.

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 15:59

I dont see why the drivers shouldnt be included. If they raised the cap and included them, then teams would have to choose to spend cash on making the car faster or buying in a good driver.

But then again the better drivers could all decide to go do something else

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 15:59

unless FOTA can find a credible rival, max will run again and win another term. that's not the right way to go at this point.

The teams can't get an FIA preident elected. I suspect nick Craw will get the job.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/05/2009 at 16:00

    AHHHH BUDGET CAPS AGAIN!!!! :(

  • Kris17/05/2009 at 16:00

But then again the better drivers could all decide to go do something else

If driver budgets got included in the cap some of them might have ended up not being to afford their superlicenses ;)

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 16:00

RBS needed £24 billion from the British taxpayer to keep it in business when it thought it was solvent and had 'reputable' accountancy firms auditing its books.

But shouldn't the auditor also be seeing what's going on? It may be an individual auditing fault in this case rather than a generalization.

  • Scott Woodwiss17/05/2009 at 16:01

They wanted to do something to the figure, I know that.

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 16:01

max said he's not budging on the budget cap. with no two-tier F1, everyone now has to follow it.

well he also said the he is open to alternative ideas on cost cutting from the teams. the problem with the cap is that all parties involved in F1 are experts in finding ways around the rules. the teams simply do not believe it can be policed. look at the governments and tax collection ... the cheat is always ahead when it comes to money ...

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 16:01

The teams can't get an FIA preident elected. I suspect nick Craw will get the job.

You think Craw can beat Max this time round?

  • F1Wolf17/05/2009 at 16:02

But shouldn't the auditor also be seeing what's going on? It may be an individual auditing fault in this case rather than a generalization.

:-) welcome to the real world. remember that auditor is a supplier of a service and wants to keep the job :-)

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:02

I dont see why the drivers shouldnt be included. If they raised the cap and included them, then teams would have to choose to spend cash on making the car faster or buying in a good driver.

Worse than that fines are not included. So teams can cheat as much as they like so long as they only get fined and it is not counted in their budget.

For example McLaren could have been fned $100 million and still been under the budget cap. How stupid is that?

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 16:03

:-) welcome to the real world. remember that auditor is a supplier of a service and wants to keep the job :-)

i mean external auditors, not internal accountants. in this case, whoever the FIA will hire to look at their F1 books.

    The FIA aren't THAT stupid

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:04

They wanted to do something to the figure, I know that.

    They want to reduce it

  • Amy17/05/2009 at 16:06

the answer is simple. Giant novelty cheques.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:06

You think Craw can beat Max this time round?

Remember after the vote of confidence there was a block of organisations that threatened to split and set up their own federation. Since then we have heard not a single word from them. That can only mean that they have been organising a campaign to oust Max and they must be confident of succeeding or they would be setting up a rival body.

As per Alianora's post I think Max is toast.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:07

i mean external auditors, not internal accountants. in this case, whoever the FIA will hire to look at their F1 books.

They will find what the FIA want them to find regardless of reality. Remember ENRON

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 16:07

As per Alianora's post I think Max is toast.

I remember Joe thinking Max will get reelected, as did JA...

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:08

Do you not think the FIA will just punish them by DSQ them instead?

They could do anything but even a $5k fine should count in a budget cap. How can a fine not count as part of the budget cap?

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:08

the answer is simple. Giant novelty cheques.

    Sleep

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:09

So what have Craw and co been doing?

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:10

This spacewalk is turning into a farce. They have spent insane amounts of time money and effort and they can't get a hand rail off.

i'm sure they're trying something, but max won't be standing still, either.

There was a body (FISA) that ran sport. Max was elected president of FISA and used that as a launch pad for his FIA presidency campaign. He then abolished FISA to stop anyone doing the same to him. The FIA president should not be involved in sport other than as absolute last resort.

  • Journeyer17/05/2009 at 16:23

FISA needs to be re-instated and all procedures for electing / appointing people throughout the FIA needs to be reviewed

Won't happen while Mosley is there. But given Craw's background, he'd probably go back to that arrangement if he were elected.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:34

watching that, this movable wings idea.. wont that negate the effect of slipsteaming somewhat?

In theory it should help the following car rather than the leading car but the amount of variability is so littl that as far as I can see it makes no difference whatever.

  • Scott Woodwiss17/05/2009 at 16:34

watching that, this movable wings idea.. wont that negate the effect of slipsteaming somewhat?

Actually you have a point. If one driver is slipstreaming another, they're both going to move the wings to the lowest setting available, so no-one's really gaining an advantage. Corner entry and exit speed will be the difference.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:35

No way. The guy doing the spacewalk just tweeted. FIX!

The theory is that the following car can run more wing because it does not have as much drag as the car in front is making a hole in th air.

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 16:37

In theory it should help the following car rather than the leading car but the amount of variability is so littl that as far as I can see it makes no difference whatever.

Yeah but for next year wont it be more?

If i underatand it right a big part of slipstreaming is that the driver behind has less air hitting his wings so they slow him down less, if thy both go flat there will be less advantage to the guy behind

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:37

No way. The guy doing the spacewalk just tweeted. FIX!

OOPS It wasn't him just someone from Hubble starting a message with his name. Must read and not scan.

If i underatand it right a big part of slipstreaming is that the driver behind has less air hitting his wings so they slow him down less, if thy both go flat there will be less advantage to the guy behind

    Exactly.

If i underatand it right a big part of slipstreaming is that the driver behind has less air hitting his wings so they slow him down less, if thy both go flat there will be less advantage to the guy behind

On the straight yes but in the corner the following guy in theory gains on the leading car and if he is travelling faster he will carry that advantage down the straight. The thing is he has to genereate downforce in the corner and he can only do that if the air is affecting his wing. If the air is affecting the wing it is creating drag.

  • Scott Woodwiss17/05/2009 at 16:40

If i underatand it right a big part of slipstreaming is that the driver behind has less air hitting his wings so they slow him down less, if thy both go flat there will be less advantage to the guy behind

You really need Indy to supply some of the F1 teams with the gurney flaps they use. They seem to be more effective than any the teams have come up with.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:41

You would think NASA would have given them a hacksaw for emergenies

You really need Indy to supply some of the F1 teams with the gurney flaps they use. They seem to be more effective than any the teams have come up with.

Gurney flaps are just wing extensions. A wing with a Gurney flap is just the same as using a slightly bigger wing

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 16:47

A Gurney flap creates an area of high pressure air by trapping it, causing the air to flow over the wing in a gentle curve and give more downforce.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 16:53

A Gurney flap creates an area of high pressure air by trapping it, causing the air to flow over the wing in a gentle curve and give more downforce.

Yes but Gurney flaps simply modify and existing wing. You can make a wing with the same shape without a Gurney. The point about Gurney flaps is that they are removable which is now illegal in F1 as far as I know.

Yep that's how they were thought up - to modify an existing wing. Kinda like trimming the ailerons in a plane...

  • Steven Roy17/05/2009 at 20:31

Did the tool float away again?

No. They had a handle with 4 screws/bolts in it. The first three came out without a problem and the fourth was stuck. Eventually they gave up with the technology and used brute force and ignorance. Of course with a little bit of design they should never have needed to take it off in the first place.

I missed them passing tools without tethers due to tremayning and th like.

Drama at IMS as Ryan Hunter-Reay gets bumped out by John Andretti, but Hunter-Reay was the next in line to qualify and gets back in at the expense of Alex Tagliani. Frankly none of these three names should be fighting over last position.

The 3 DNQs: Tagliani, Barrett, Lazier

who'd have thought a bottle based catamaran would be so hard to design...

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 22:24

there is nothing on red bulletin about the Sebs taking on Hungary... which is strange

  • Andy Taylor17/05/2009 at 22:27

who'd have thought a bottle based catamaran would be so hard to design...

You'll need 2 bottles, not one.

  • Lukeh17/05/2009 at 22:29

so this is an event that existed but never took place?

    *cue spooky music*

  • Jon Waldock17/05/2009 at 22:29

You'll need 2 bottles, not one.

    2 litre bottle = 2kg of floating-ness, i'm 70kg + say 40kg for wood and mast + another person (90kg) which is about 100 bottles....but i'm looking for 160.....

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 22:30

so this is an event that existed but never took place?

It didnt happen? i wasn't really paying attention before, so what was it about the NASCAR?

  • Lukeh17/05/2009 at 22:31

It didnt happen? i wasn't really paying attention before, so what was it about the NASCAR?

I dont know, there seems to be no photos of it, no news about it, nothing about it on the red bulletin...

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 22:33

I dont know, there seems to be no photos of it, no news about it, nothing about it on the red bulletin...

Perhaps it was an elaborate joke no one picked up on...

  • Scott Woodwiss17/05/2009 at 22:38

Ah, at least I only have to get up at 7 tomorrow rather than quarter to 6. I'll welcome the extra 1 and a quarter hours sleep :D

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 22:44

Im not an engineer, but if you have V shape hulls, maybe fill the bottom row of bottles with water to act as a keel?

  • Jon Waldock17/05/2009 at 22:46

Im not an engineer, but if you have V shape hulls, maybe fill the bottom row of bottles with water to act as a keel?

wow, thats a really awesome idea. thank you!! would mean i'd have to make them a bit deeper overall to get the same boyancy, but that would totally work!!! thank you :D

  • Nick17/05/2009 at 22:51

Haha, ive no idea if it would work, but i hope it does, i've sailed inflatable boats which spent as much time going sideways as forwards
