It's back to work for Formula 1 today, and for us as well, as testing resumes in Jerez. So far the forecasts have suggested more in the way of rain, but there will be a dedicated thread for all testing talk along later. I'm hoping the weather clears up a bit as it's much more exciting when things are actually happening out on track. Anyway, here are some things we're talking about:

  • Mr C has been busy updating Ye Olde Comments, so if you visit any blog page, you'll find that there are a couple of improvements. The buttons have returned, allowing easy quoting and italicising of comments without having to remember the code itself. There's also the option to share comments now, along with whole articles. If you hover over the comment you're keen on, hit that share link, it'll send you on over to Twitter so you can spread the words of wisdom. Good work, Mr C.
  • Our resident comic genius Stuart Taylor gave us a new situation to ponder with his latest guest post. The premise behind the pictures, aside from the obvious, is that things could always be worse. Joe Saward has also posted an article about a similar subject, albeit a little more frustrated about the subject.
  • Meanwhile, back to testing, it seems as though James Allen is going to attempt to switch on the auto refresh on his super duper Twitter page. To be fair, we are a little bit skeptical about how long his site will stay up for, but having looked at it now, the main page is down but the Twitter bit is still up. There is hope! It will be interesting to see how it works and it will add yet another element to the testing proceedings.

That'll do for now, let us know how you're week is going, and what you're doing post-pancake day. I will see you in the comments.

Another alternative is http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/home/index.html . Point your mouse at realtime data and some opinions appear on the blue line. Orbital tracking gives you a map and a plot of the ISS orbit and gives you telemetry from both vehicles - temp, humidity, altitude, speed etc

If you select Sighting Opportunities after Realtime data you can find out all available sightings for your area for the next couple of weeks.

Is that in terms of their entries? I'm not clear on whether teams can 'merge' like they can elsewhere.

  • Christine17/02/2010 at 10:14

From 2007, an Autosport post: Toyota have confirmed that Kamui Kobayashi will replace Franck Montagny as the team's third driver, as revealed by autosport.com earlier today.

I'm not sure I knew that. Grrr.

  • Lukeh17/02/2010 at 11:56

So, Lukeh, what are you going to cook today?

Seeing as they were out all yesterday, I have been asked by my parents to cook them pancakes. This is the 3rd time in 2 days, which is better than 0 times in 21 years.

Maybe I should open a Pancake shop. Next to Greggs.

    :D told you pancakes weren't difficult... ;)

You were right. :) Everyone was. I still don't trust my toaster though, you put it onto the crispy setting and it comes out not crispy. There is clearly a flaw there, or toasting is harder than it seems.

Joe has been writing about Nick Fry - http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/some-people-really-have-it-in-for-nick-fry/ - I know how a really odd morphed image of Frymarsh, as he puts it. Whitmarsh and Fry are oddly similar now he mentioned it, and I've never picked up on it...

    Bonjour, Lukeh! Hyuk-uh! :D

    :)

I idn't like disneyland paris anyways. You know it's not the best of things when your most predominant memory of a theme park is french people, both in costumes or just normal french people in shops, shouting at you. Although pirates of the carribean was alright!

Probably because I could understand what people where shouting.

  • Amy17/02/2010 at 15:52

If it makes it any better Amy, Goofy shouted at me in french when I went to disneyland

I'd like to think that shouting is not offensive if I can't understand it. I don't think it works that way though, it's probably more scary.

  • Amy17/02/2010 at 15:52

Hehehe the queues are gonna be horrendous at that time of year though!

The elders of the internet advise to go on a Tuesday because Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are the busiest week days. This I can do. I can queue like a pro if need be. Theres not a lot I won't do for Mickey!

I don't know if I'll be amazed at how good technology is today, or disappointed many of these shots can't be done in a real environment. It could be not just down to budget - other areas may prove to be impossible or very difficult to film (due to lighting and/or climate).

I am talking about many of the scenes like the Heroes one where some dude is just outside and the whole thing is faked.

I mean, there's a scene with Jack Bauer sitting on some steps outside somewhere in Washington, and the whole thing is faked. Why?

  • RG17/02/2010 at 16:11

don't be daft. you cannot blow up cars in the middle of the street anymore. the public will revolt.

it would takes years to make a series. 24 would be more like 4.

  • Journeyer17/02/2010 at 16:12

Another reason they may be resorting to green screens is to minimize spoilers. Imagine if the public saw all filming...

  • Lukeh17/02/2010 at 16:13

the president has a thing about people filming on his lawn.

Let this be a good invitation then

    Dear Mr Bauer,

You have my permission to film a scene of 24 on the steps of my front garden. I have cake awaiting your arrivals

    Yours sincerly,

    Lukeh.

PS. Tell all of hollywood I have cake. Also, Greggs.

  • RubberGoat17/02/2010 at 16:13

    I agree. It's just lazy film-making!

don't be daft. you cannot blow up cars in the middle of the street anymore. the public will revolt.

Well the police car and space scene aside (which were cool), the ones I don't like are the ones where the scene is normal and yet they can't even be bothered to be there (Like the Ugly Betty ones).

If it's to add to the scene, like a disaster or an explosion or a scene that is abnormal (like space) then cool, go for it.

But if you can't be bothered to set up an outdoor film unit to film a scene where they walk down the street? Lazy.

  • me17/02/2010 at 16:13

Another reason they may be resorting to green screens is to minimize spoilers. Imagine if the public saw all filming...

One of the channels here politely puts in a black screen pause before and after the ad break which means that most DVD recorders see that as a chapter - skipping ads really easily!

Yeah or they are being sneaky. Either way I guess it would be best to take the advice and grab an annual Plus subscription today.

    Question; why is sport sexist?

The mens luge start was higher than the womans, so they moved hte mens and now the womans is moved to the junior....

    Question; why is sport sexist?

The mens luge start was higher than the womans, so they moved hte mens and now the womans is moved to the junior....

    discuss

Is it to do with body strength?

  • RG17/02/2010 at 20:24

The mens luge start was higher than the womans, so they moved hte mens and now the womans is moved to the junior....

Thats because the body strength of a man is more able to cope with the higer g-forces that is put on the higer start gate.

  • Jon Waldock17/02/2010 at 20:25

Is it to do with body strength?

the men start to women start maybe, but why did they move them to the junior start?

  • Lukeh17/02/2010 at 20:25

    Question; why is sport sexist?

    Sport isn't sexist.

  • RG17/02/2010 at 20:26

the men start to women start maybe, but why did they move them to the junior start?

Since the men's start wasn't safe for the men, the women's start would not be safe for the women.

  • lou17/02/2010 at 20:26

  • Alison17/02/2010 at 20:26

Thats because the body strength of a man is more able to cope with the higer g-forces that is put on the higer start gate.

They moved the starts because they thought the course was too dangerous though. I can't see why the women couldn't go from the women's start same as the men as surely speeds would be comparable.

  • Paul Convery17/02/2010 at 20:27

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:27

The mens luge start was higher than the womans, so they moved hte mens and now the womans is moved to the junior....

Surely the question is why they are different in the first place. There is a set weight for the luger plus luge and the men's weight is higher than the women's so I assume that has some effect

  • RubberGoat17/02/2010 at 20:27

  • Alison17/02/2010 at 20:27

Since the men's start wasn't safe for the men, the women's start would not be safe for the women.

The sport is intrinsically dangerous. The only safe option is not to compete!

  • lou17/02/2010 at 20:27

Brownies are much yummier than pancakes too... not that I'm jealous, or anything... ;)

Surely the question is why they are different in the first place. There is a set weight for the luger plus luge and the men's weight is higher than the women's so I assume that has some effect

I guess you do need increased strength to steer at higher speeds?

  • Pat W17/02/2010 at 20:28

Thats because the body strength of a man is more able to cope with the higer g-forces that is put on the higer start gate.

I disagree. There are some very good female fighter pilots.

  • lou17/02/2010 at 20:28

  • Pat W17/02/2010 at 20:29

The speeds could have something to do with it.

  • Jon Waldock17/02/2010 at 20:29

Since the men's start wasn't safe for the men, the women's start would not be safe for the women.

i dont accept that, the mens course people said was dangerous before they started, didnt say that for the womens, theres been plenty of people on the womens course before

  • RG17/02/2010 at 20:30

I disagree. There are some very good female fighter pilots.

In all fairness that was a guess that sounded reasonable.

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:30

So much for the idea of getting a subscription for the Digital Edition of Autosport, they only accept MasterCard or Visa :(

Why is it not a surprise that Haymarket have never heard of Pay Pal? What century do you live in Haymarket? You only found out there was demand for an online magazine because you were forced into trying it and you are clueless how to exploit an opportunity that has been handed to you. You need Sir Alan Sugar to tell you that you're fired for being clueless.

  • Alison17/02/2010 at 20:30

The speeds could have something to do with it.

Well that's what the start height is all about. If you start higher up the hill, you do go faster. The argument was though that by the end of the course the speeds were comparable from the women's and junior start.

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:32

I disagree. There are some very good female fighter pilots.

But none of them got the job because they were the best fighter pilot in a country that didn't own a plane. The top people at the Olympics are the best in the world but there are a lot of Eddie the Eagles out there

  • RG17/02/2010 at 20:33

But none of them got the job because they were the best fighter pilot in a country that didn't own a plane. The top people at the Olympics are the best in the world but there are a lot of Eddie the Eagles out there

I wouldn't agree to that. All of them have competed in World Cup events and have at least looked competitive.

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:34

i dont accept that, the mens course people said was dangerous before they started, didnt say that for the womens, theres been plenty of people on the womens course before

I saw an interview with one of the top women and she said she had 2 crashes in 14 years and had lost track of the number of crashes she has had at this track since she started practising on it. It was way too dangerous. Unfortunately like F1 the problem was tackled as soon as someone died.

  • Paul Convery17/02/2010 at 20:35

Nevermind PayPal, they don't seem to have heard of Maestro card either.

  • Alison17/02/2010 at 20:36

I wouldn't agree to that. All of them have competed in World Cup events and have at least looked competitive.

That's not necessarily true with the Olympics though. Although in theory there are set qualification times/distances/whatever's relevant to your discipline, these can be overridden by a country's olympic committee if they deem it appropriate. In theory I could turn up to compete if the UK wanted to choose me to put forward!

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:36

I wouldn't agree to that. All of them have competed in World Cup events and have at least looked competitive.

Who was the worst one there and what was his/her world ranking?

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:37

Nevermind PayPal, they don't seem to have heard of Maestro card either.

They really don't deserve to make any money from an online mag when they didn't even know there was a demand for it

  • Jon Waldock17/02/2010 at 20:38

Who was the worst one there and what was his/her world ranking?

Not sure thats relevant, they are all the best in their country, they may be comparitively rubbish, but they are all representing their country.

They'll have had to pass a qualifying time [ala Cool Runnings] so they wont be millles off (potentially

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 20:41

They'll have had to pass a qualifying time [ala Cool Runnings] so they wont be millles off (potentially

Remember Eddie the Eagle. He was last by something like 30 metres. Fine in that event but to have a course where top competitors are having more crashes than in a 14 year career is ridiculous when there are lugers who do not regularly compete at that level.

Yeah I'm still waiting to see something more official. Seems to be a lot of things pointing to it being true now though.

Just tried a news search for usf1 and all I got was a load of rubbish about Campos, Stefan and Buspass running a story that Dave Richards and Prodrive may take up any vacant slot.

If the internet is to be believed today then there are some real twists with those three teams. Would seem like USF1 are now done and that was after things sounding quite promising at the start of the year. While Campos is maybe going to be saved after all the light had went out at the end of their tunnel.

Maybe the deal for Mr Youtube's backing was for the money to be handed out when the team made progress with the car. There are rumours that the car failed its FIA crash test this week, and of bad team management. Not sure that is the sort of thing I'd want to involve my money in.

Most cars fail their crash tests. They try to make them pass by the minimum amount

Yeah but if is true it is also rather late in the game to be failing a crash test. Maybe they could get a car ready in time if they had the money, but i can't imagine it would be a situation that an investor would like.

Maybe just the nature of the events but it is certainly the case that there are more injuries.

Normally a world cup downhill in skiing is over two runs but the Olympic race is one run only so they take way more risk because they know that it is impossible to win unless they really hang it out.

Close enough I guess. Would love to see a 49 on track again.

  • Lukeh17/02/2010 at 21:59

He is normally sensible but that comment is just stupid.

Hahaha, that's such sweet irony. Now he complains when it happens to him despite being all innocent when Henry always used to do it.

  • Adie17/02/2010 at 22:00

Arsene Wenger is funny. The ref should let us set up a wall before allowing Porto to take a free kick. I can't wait until the first time a ref stops Arsenal taking a quick free kick.

He obviously can't remember this then...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCWjioIR5MM

  • Lukeh17/02/2010 at 22:00

Don't you have to wait for the ref to blow the whistle to take the kick?

Yes but you can ask for a quick free kick if you tell the referee, so he blows his whistle and whala.

  • Paul Convery17/02/2010 at 22:00

    Night mate.

  • Dan Brunell17/02/2010 at 22:01

He decided to play hardball with Chris Pook and lost

I said it yesterday. Something happened with that. We've been curse since then. Long Beach went away, Detroit fell apart. Bernie pick Phoenix over Laguna Seca, Michael Andretti, and then Indy.

Indy could of worked, then we got the double haymakers of the 2003 and 2005 race.

    Now USF1...

With no F1 and the IRL in serious trouble... open wheel racing is on life support over here. I don't know what to do next. I love sportscar and will follow F1 vicariously through Sidepodcast... but seeing NASCAR complete its' 20 year destruction of open wheel is just depressing...

  • Lukeh17/02/2010 at 22:01

Night all. I'm off to watch a dvd and then maybe get a good nights sleep.

    See ya.

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 22:02

Don't you have to wait for the ref to blow the whistle to take the kick?

Not necessarily. Most referees give the option of taking the kick immediately or if not waiting until they are happy that all the defenders are far enough back, the linesman is in the right position and the wind is blowing in the right direction. Most teams take that option because they practise all their free kicks that way but when the goal keeper is standing in the middle of nowhere and the Arsenal defence is showing no real interest in getting back the quick free kick passed to someone standing in front of an empty goal is a better option

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 22:03

Night all. I'm off to watch a dvd and then maybe get a good nights sleep.

    Night Paul

There is bound to be an F1 race in the US in the near future.

Anyone up for Thursday Thoughts tomorrow?

I may excuse myself this week as I already have a backlog of things I want to write about. I also need to diversify my so-called 'multi-series' blog into talking about more than F1 so technically my season has already started. :)

If I recall correctly, he sniffed the cocoa powder and said it was like heaven in a jar, and then did the same with the baking powder or the bicarbonate of soda, which of course... wasn't.

  • Steven Roy17/02/2010 at 23:55

Steven, you must be well rested after last night's early evening [relatively speaking]

Did you see the curling man fall over yesterday? Loads of the women downhill skiers fell even after they'd finished, half of them smashed into the fence at the bottom. It looked lethal out there....

I like Billy Connolly's description of a zombie mentioned on the wikipedia page

Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly advised his audience during his An Audience With... show to try the Zombie, citing that it's "in an extraordinary concept; [the consumer gets] drunk from the bottom-up".

I have heard him talk about drinking them and he says you can sit and talk to someone without realising you have had anything to drink and make perfect sense then when you get off your seat you find out your legs are drunk

Weird, I did that but I still see my post on the 18th page. I have to select the 17th page to quote you. Me and computers are not simpatico.

They're in seperate threads. It's an interface for seeing posts in all threads. I fear Bassano has lead you astray though. I think we're pretty much going to stay in the 18th now :P

You can only quote in the thread the original comment was made in or it is impossible for anyone reading comments later to follow the conversation. Best just switch to the 18th now and forget quoting anything in the 17th
