We have reached Tuesday, and as mentioned in this weekend's show, it is Jeremy's girlfriend Zoe's birthday today. Happy birthday Zoe! It's also Valentino Rossi's birthday today, although I believe he is older than our Zoe. I wonder if it is nice to have a birthday near to Valentine's Day or if it has a similar effect as the Christmas birthday - just one set of celebrations. Anyway, here are some F1 related things:

  • There wasn't an enormous amount of news yesterday, with most people seemingly focused on what the weather will be doing at the next test. Autosport reported that the weather is expected to be bad, whilst Ferrari tweeted that they would prefer to be somewhere a bit warmer (a bit more Bahrain shaped?) Clearly they've forgotten what happened last year.
  • Christine's Rankings updated yesterday with a few new entrants on the list. Already, I'm planning some of the adjustments to next week's rankings. It doesn't take long to fall out of my favour, let me tell you that much! Meanwhile, Gavin has also blogged some rankings, with added graph goodness, plus percentages and a scary formula!
  • It's about time I promoted the next section of my F1 story: Life in the Fast Lane - Part 4. You get to vote on the outcome of each section, until we reach number ten, so make sure you head on over and submit your vote if you haven't already. Alex has mentioned that so far he has disagreed with each outcome, and my mother has said the same thing as well. The only way you can change it is by voting!

That will do for now, I think. Just time for a quick congratulations to Pat W for passing his exams, and I will see you in the comments.

I had a very quick look (okay Dad had a quick look) at the weekend and the hotels turn out to be hugely expensive... so the motorhome is looking more appealing :)

If you haven't got time then bags of ice are great

Otherwise, those bags you fill up and chuck in the freezer

  • lou16/02/2010 at 00:27

i used to buy packs of ice cubes too.

you.. bought... icecubes?... when you can get water from a tape?...

yeah i can see they'd be useful for parties etc... but i dunno.. it just seems odd.

  • lou16/02/2010 at 00:32

    ...or a cheese grater.

i don't understand... surely (this may sound silly) freshly grated cheese is nicer?

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 00:33

What? I'd just use a food processor?

When grating, hold the object with a flat hand to avoid grating your knuckles

    [Don't have processor either]

  • me16/02/2010 at 00:33

Ah I see.... I was saying that after trying to make a carrot cake and grate 15 carrots by hand, I've decided it's very very tedious. I didn't hurt myself. If I'd needed to grate 16 carrots, the grater would probably be in the bin right now though.... If you're doing volume, I get you wouldn't want to do it by hand!

  • me16/02/2010 at 00:35

it's the same. made by the same people and in the same colour packet and everything.

    no.

    just cheese.

you guys seem to be confused. the company who make cheese, slice it into blocks right? put them into packets. well they can also grate instead of slice and put that into packets too.

it's not magic. it's just grated cheese.

My only thinking is that smaller bits of cheese dry more quickly. So if you grate it that much earlier surely it'd lose taste or consistency.

(I freely admit I'm spoiled by the cheese I get from work)

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 00:41

Just to throw my 2 cents into it, i know ours is definitely done by the same people. Tis the same brand.

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 00:43

Hmmm depends how far you're willing to travel. Availability for that weekend is already very poor. The god that is Hotels.com has told me that of 29 local hotels matching my price requirements, 22 are fully booked. Most of the rest don't have internet which probably annoys you more than me.

  • Pat W16/02/2010 at 00:43

hehehe i hope i'm not the only one finding the whole concept of us talking seriously about cheese in the early hours of the morning amusing :)

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 00:44

In San Francisco, a few years back, I wanted a cheese toastie from a diner

The choice was Swiss or American cheese

Naively, I went for American (I already knew what Swiss cheese was like)

I got processed sliced cheese, in toast

    #lessonlearnt

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 00:44

It's simple though. The sooner it's grated, the more time there is for the flavour to leach out. It's always going to taste best if I grate it just before use. The surface I'm tasting hasn't been exposed to the air at all.

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 00:45

In reading that it looks like USF1 has leased the facility until 2014, it's just that the owner is trying to sell the building and it shouldn't affect the tenant

I'm proper veggie. I've never really liked fish though... Taramasalata from memory is quite tasty though. I would probably eat it if it was offered to me :P

So, if the 100m sprint is the top draw in the summer olympics (well, athletics anyway)

    What's the biggie here?

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 01:59

    Ooh, oversteer!

  • Journeyer16/02/2010 at 02:00

    What's the biggie here?

    Figure skating?

I thought the marathon was the biggie in the Summer?

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 02:00

That completely has to be a man?

  • Bert16/02/2010 at 02:00

    What's the biggie here?

    You might have a few....

The 500M long-track, the downhill, certainly for us it's the hockey.

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 02:01

    Figure skating?

    Never

The 500M long-track, the downhill, certainly for us it's the hockey.

    Can't see the Puck

    Do they have pro teams

[Olympics should be an am tourney imho]

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 02:02

I'd say one of the downhill events? I don't really know though. I guess winter sports aren't such headliners here.

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 02:03

Hmm, seen 3 Luges, seen em all

    Speed is impressive though

  • Bert16/02/2010 at 02:05

[Olympics should be an am tourney imho]

Absolutely, without a doubt. I hate to see NHL players playing. Just as I hate to see NBA players in the summer.

The best suggestion that I have heard is that the world junior league (formerly Canda Cup, IIRC) make their world-championship in Olympic years.

I am very much of the opinion that the Olympics should be an amateur games. I remember when I was younger, having Junior players deciding if they would "turn pro" or wait another year.

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 02:06

How does one decide to become a Luger?

    Where do you practice? :)

Absolutely, without a doubt. I hate to see NHL players playing. Just as I hate to see NBA players in the summer.

I guess it's a case of follow the money. Not all sports use pros, though. I know boxing still doesn't.

You choose luge if running in an enclosed sled is to "sissi" but going down head-first is "too-nuts"

I guess one would practice at the luge track? ;-)

  • Journeyer16/02/2010 at 02:10

    Achievement in Sport

But achievement in sport isn't limited to amateurs, though?

In case you didn't hear, the first Zamboni (ice-resurfacer) had transmission problems, the second (on-site spare) had blade issues (there is a big blade dragged behind the thing). They brought in a third, but it was not compatible for long-track speed skating surfacing. The tire (tyre?) studs were too long and the water outlet let too much water out.

I find it hard to believe that the Hockey crazy canadians can't get a working Zamboni going.

  • Amy16/02/2010 at 02:22

i figure what better place to watch the olympics than a country that speaks my language, in a city where i know about 20 people so can probably arrange free accommodation (because you can bet the hotel prices will be put up astronomically) and where the tennis is being held on the most famous tennis courts in the world :D i cant believe i didnt think of this sooner :D

American shows are so keen to start as series when the viewing 'season' begins, they have to take weeks off because post production isn't finished yet

26 episode seasons are to blame, I guess

    Technically, streaming is downloading

People generally mean saving to hard drive when they say 'download'

Data coming to you = download

Data going from you = Upload

  • jpancoast (Don't cry for me ARGENTINA!)16/02/2010 at 02:36

I hear Malware is being packaged with mp3's these days

meh, I don't know about that, I buy music now that I can get it non-DRM'd

But I play most/all of my video content through my PS3, so it's tougher for a bad video file to affect it (most bad guys would spend their efforts on malware that affected PC's/windows)

  • Bert16/02/2010 at 02:37

Did he have a broken right skate? Are they supposed to be attached at the heel??

Nope, thought it used to be. That is the "clapper" skate. It came out for the 1992 Olympics IIRC. It allows a longer push-off stroke, so more speed.

    Coin toss?

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 02:47

    Coin toss?

Unless you're obviously much better, it looks impossible to win from inside though. You might as well toss to decide who's the winner.....

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 02:47

For the record: Bobsleigh starts on Saturday

  • Bert16/02/2010 at 02:47

    Coin toss?

I think I heard that the better qualified (faster) skater gets lane choice, and the better choice is to finish on the inside lane.

Yeah I was only out without a hat for 45 minutes though. Through dappled shade. You'd never believe it could make someone that sick....

I thought I'd had a stroke. I was completely paralysed down my right side. If I hadn't been raving like a drunk, it might have occurred to me that there's a reason it's called sun stroke :P

The university are going pay for my entry fees and travel to compete in regional Triathlon events this year, with a view to representing the university at the British University Triathlon Championships! Very exciting.

My bike however decided it didn't like the news and decided to break. BOO, back in the gym tomorrow then.

Creating a season plan of events which I'll actually do is quite exciting! I've got 9 events at the moment, 7 Tri's and 2 Dualthons! Exciting.

    Anywho. Night all

There's a difference. "Real Ale" is ale served from a cask through a hand pump. It's flatter because it doesn't get infused with CO2 like it would coming from a tap. (Or Nitrogen, in the case of guinness)

According to CAMRA (the CAMpaign for Real Ale)

a real ale is "a natural product brewed using traditional ingredients and left to mature in the cast (or container) from which it is served in the pub through a process called secondary fermentation."

That means that it is casked beer that is not pasteurized and still has live yeast.

I can't do naps because if I try I wake up and its 5 hours later and it's ruined my chances of having a normal nights sleep. Sleeping for 15 minutes? Just can't do it.

There is an iPhone app which apparently changes when you wake up (in a window) based on your circadian rhythms. Apparently it stops you from having that ooof moment. You lie the phone on your bed and it monitors your movements.

hopefully yes :) i need to choose between 2 more photos and finish of the statement that goes with them and then it's all done. I'm not 100% happy with it,but as long as the uni see potential and that i can take a photo for the right reasons that should be alright (i hope). I have decided to go to Spa, but not how to get there yet. I may be bringing a friend down but I am unsure if he can make it...

Because at the moment it looks like I will fly to CPH and then go on to spa, so any tips you have on what's the best way to get there are very much appreciated :)

  • James16/02/2010 at 12:14

    Ah. Chrome fail (again).

Finally I see Chrome fail at something :p

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 12:14

What do I need then for pancakes?

  • Pat W16/02/2010 at 12:14

There's a difference. "Real Ale" is ale served from a cask through a hand pump. It's flatter because it doesn't get infused with CO2 like it would coming from a tap. (Or Nitrogen, in the case of guinness)

    That's still 'Ale' for us

But I know what you mean

    [on both counts]

I'm still catching up, just wanted to say JPancoast is right, we call it Real Ale too.

  • Christine16/02/2010 at 12:15

Ah right. Well the choices I had were to take an overnight train, get a cheap flight, get a bus with a Danish travel company or possibly drive. I cannot drive however.

Do you want to travel with us? Might be easier...

    You don't need a blender....

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 12:44

    Do you have flour yet?

    I found self raising...

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:44

Self Raising makes fluffy big ones (american style)

    Plain makes crepe style

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:45

Get a reasonable sized mug, get a mug of flour, a mug of milk, and an egg. put in bowl. whisk.

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:47

    Get 1 mug.

Sieve a mug of flour into the bowl.

Pour the same mug of milk into the bowl.

    add egg.

    wisk.

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 12:48

If you don't leave it any time to rise, it shouldn't make much difference. If anything, it could be slightly fluffier but it's not a big deal!

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:48

    http://s1.hubimg.com/u/128752_f260.jpg

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:50

    Sieve it!

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:51

Don't worry then :D dosent matter too much

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 12:52

A sieve seems like the sort of thing that belongs in a drawer not a cupboard...

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 12:53

It's not too late for the sieve!! You sieve it into the bowl...

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 12:53

Okay it is too late now. Never mind :P

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 12:55

You need to crack hte egg first ;)

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 12:58

I have whisked! Now, what? :)

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 12:59

Pan. You need to get the pan hot before you put the mix in.

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 13:01

Have you put any oil in it?

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 13:02

A little bit, thats how you see if its hot enough

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 13:05

The oil is in the pan and has been swirled about!

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 13:05

So once the oil is warmed up, pour about half a mug of pancake into the pan, wait till its cooked. flip. cook. take out. simple

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 13:06

Hunt out some kind of fish slice tool before pouring it in to help you flip!

  • Jon Waldock16/02/2010 at 13:06

I have to go! KEEP GOING! I BELIEVE IN YOU!

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 13:06

    Clearly there should be a sausage roll day to balance out the odds :) {Comment #673}

There's a National Doughnut Week (8th - 15th May), a British Sandwich week (16th - 23rd May) and a National Baking Week (18th - 24th October), but no mass celebration of sausage rolls. Sorry.

    Hi everyone.

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 14:23

I find having breakfast actually makes me more hungry later in the morning. It wakes your whole digestive system up.

  • Alison16/02/2010 at 14:26

Yes probably. But the reason to have breakfast shouldn't be that it stops you getting hungry later because it blatantly doesn't!

  • Journeyer16/02/2010 at 14:26

What do you guys have for breakfast? I have a choice of meat and/or cheese on fresh or rye bread, muesli, cereal, or fruit...

On weekdays, I have bread with butter or cheese plus milk.

On weekends, it depends on what I'm in the mood for. I may have eggs plus either corned beef or beef tapa with rice. :)

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 14:26

I do! Like I said, I have toast on my first break at work in the mid morning, much better for me :)

I'm very active especially at work. I don't really have a desk job. I'm busy though so I'll go and eat if I get hungry. If the hungry feeling never arrives, I just won't remember to eat.

Fair enough. I guess cause I cycle and walk to and from work then I couldn't do that. But I could do at the weekends - where I get up late and sit on my bum all day :)

has the price dropped? am sure before i looked and it was way to expensive. $5 a week seems more doable.

It must have. I remember it being extortionate before but we figured that's because it was aimed at those wealthy team principal types :)

  • Alianora La Canta16/02/2010 at 14:49

    What do you guys have for breakfast? {Comment #837}

Cornflakes, one wheatabix, bran flakes, sultanas, other dried fruit if available and milk with one or two glasses of fruit juice. In case you're wondering I have everything except the fruit juice in one bowl.

That said, sometimes I don't have breakfast (as a general rule, if I'm not hungry before 10:30am and I don't have anything major coming up before lunch, I skip breakfast because otherwise it spoils my appetite for lunch). In that case, I just have a glass of fruit juice.

I don't know if this has been seen 'round these parts yet, but it's in car footage of Danica during the Arca race when Piquet bumps her. She let's go of the wheel:

I have not seen the video.....

If you know you are going to hit the wall, yes, the proper technique to crashing is to take your hand off the steering wheel. Saves lots of wrist damage.

Otherwise, in most forms of roudie-round racing, if you have a chance to "save-it" ("IT" being crew time spent fixing the car you broke), the procedure is to "lock-it-down", in which you turn hard left, and possibly give it some gas, to induce a spin. This is usually only suggested where you have large run-off areas to the inside of the track (e.g. Daytona) and not really suited for a short-oval, where the inside wall may be just as close.

you're going to have to take a look :)

it doesn't seem to me like she freaks out, but i really have no clue.

  • Bert16/02/2010 at 16:19

Backing in to the wall is usually not a reason to take your hands off the wheel. If you do take your hands off the wheel you would usually want to secure them by crossing them over your chest or something similar, so that they don't flail around. Rally co-drivers have that move down-pat!

    I'll give her a 3/10 for the arm-saving and a 7/10 for car-saving.

Someone was just telling me that when you win the lottery, they will give you advice on what to do with your millions, but not until you've got spending out of your system. Apparently you get a credit card with about £40k on and the challenge is to spend it in a day.

Close. My Argentinian colleague reckons it means "small chest" - as in, he's weak and not very muscley....

hehehe... I'm guessing "little breast" is maybe the direct translation?

Either way, it's kind of a funny nickname!

Oh, and speaking of pancakes, one of my nicknames used to be "pancakes" (because of my last name), but it got shortened to "cakes" eventually. One of those things that kids started out using to make fun of me but it got coopted :)

The lane markings look like the blue rinse aircraft used to use before vacuum toilets. Thankfully, 'Blue Ice' is becoming a thing of the past

Did anything come out about the Nick Fry story from last night?

  • RubberGoat16/02/2010 at 20:46

I have a friend at work who has a friend who rode skeleton for Canada in Turin. He mentioned that she needed to work with a sports psychologist to get her head in the right place after having a bad crash.

I argued that because she was doing the Skeleton, she was probably already beyond help!

Indeed. So is F1. Oh well.

It's always on at a sensible hour... in Vancouver. ;)

yet it's tape delayed on the west coast of the US.

Of course, I'm on the east coast and don't care about the Olympics, but I just like to complain.

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 21:42

    Woohooo!! Cowbell!!

  • Tom G16/02/2010 at 21:46

    Woohooo!! Cowbell!!

And yet, I haven't seen any cows.

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 21:47

And yet, I haven't seen any cows.

You don't need any cows to have a cowbelling good time!

Even better if you have a fever. It makes for a good prescription.

  • Dan Brunell16/02/2010 at 21:48

yet it's tape delayed on the west coast of the US.

Yup. At least 1) they delay it till I get out of work. 2) I am close enough to Canada that we get all the CBC stations.

CBC saves me again. When F1 went off ESPN, they were my life line for F1 coverage when they would replay the races at Sunday midnight

not a clue, but even you guys can't predict the weather. i'm all for testing in bahrain, because leaving equipment there will likely save money/hassle before first race. i just don't think bad jerez weather is a good enough reason to switch.

    twitter needs morr characters.

Florence won the major award so i suppose i can cope with some Mr Williams.. it's a little bit more bearable with wine.

I have been impressed by all the rage on twitter concerning Kasabian and Muse, it's been very amusing :D

at least Florence won somethin though. Can't believe JLS were voted better break through band. Despite, yknow, being on a TV show for a year. The Brits are quite awful like that :)

  • Tom G16/02/2010 at 22:07

Just tuned in now. what happened to that woman? The commentators seemed quite down for her and she was going uphill.

She fell right before a jump, and she was so desperate to just finish her run, but it was a mostly uphill section. It was rather sad to see.

What type of genre film mood are you in?

  • Steven Roy16/02/2010 at 22:18

we don't have that on DVD or anything :(

There was an advert on TV 2 minutes ago saying the DVD is out now

  • lou16/02/2010 at 22:19

    The choices are

    - The Other Boleyn Girl,

    - Blood Diamond,

    - Zorro

    - The Pianist.

  • Pat W16/02/2010 at 22:19

    Hello.

  • lou16/02/2010 at 22:19

do you have itunes? or where's the choice coming from?

we can't choose between those 4... i would buy/ download Up from itunes but it would take hours...

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 22:20

    - The Other Boleyn Girl,

    - Blood Diamond,

    - Zorro

    - The Pianist.

I would say the Pianist... but it's not the most uplifting film in the world, as brilliant as it is...

    Blood Diamond?

  • Steven Roy16/02/2010 at 22:20

    The choices are

I have only seen the first one I think

  • Steven Roy16/02/2010 at 22:20

  • jpancoast (Don't cry for me ARGENTINA!)16/02/2010 at 22:22

I've only seen Zorro. Watch that!

Zorro (the first one with... errr... what's his name and Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins) is pretty fun. The Other Boleyn Girl and Blood Diamond are pretty good as well, if not very happy-go-lucky. Haven't seen teh Pianist

  • Lukeh16/02/2010 at 22:23

Blood Diamond is a good choice... but... so is the Pianist...

    #sorrylou

  • lou16/02/2010 at 22:32

not the point, you didn't watch, and i bet you couldn't even hear him.. you were talking over him :(

only because he gets the audience to sing his songs!! i mean if you pay for a concert you don't expect to sing the songs yourself... you can do that at home ;)

  • Steven Roy16/02/2010 at 22:32

hmmm that's what she wants... :s

    Problem solved then

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 22:32

  • lou16/02/2010 at 22:33

but that isn't the point... you pay for to hear the artist sing.. not point the microphone in your general direction ;)

okay we are watching blood diamond, it's an awesome film. that okay Naomi?

  • Bassano16/02/2010 at 22:34

Yes that is fine. In fact, a fantatsic idea. Quite superb.

I'm speaking on behalf of Naomi.

  • Steven Roy16/02/2010 at 22:35

but that isn't the point... you pay for to hear the artist sing.. not point the microphone in your general direction ;)

You pay for the experience. If you want to hear him sing you go to iTunes and hear him clearly for a fraction of the cost

  • naomi, lou's friend16/02/2010 at 22:35

but that isn't the point... you pay for to hear the artist sing.. not point the microphone in your general direction ;)

so you weren't happy when Coldplay let us sing Yellow? or bits of Vida la Vida.. it wouldn't of been the same at home.

has she got any better from yesterday?

Yesterday it was just "THE BLUE ONE!!! ""

  • RG16/02/2010 at 23:27

But why are they pausing the commentary?

    Talk about what's coming up!
