In some regards, we are ahead of schedule because we've got the latest episode of F1 Debrief out already. In others, we are behind schedule, as I haven't written the next part of Life in the Fast Lane yet. The vote is closed, but I figured I would save it for a day when I wasn't busy editing podcasts, and could pay more attention to Mitch and his race strategy. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Ollie appears to have made a triumphant return to blogging, with more posts in a day than even Joe can claim! Head on over to BlogF1 to catch up with his thoughts on the launches we have seen, plus some nice glossy photos as well.
  • If you have listened to the podcast already, you'll know we had a voicemail on this subject, but F1 Wolf has posted a poll of the liveries we have seen so far and you can vote on which is the best one. It's a great way of seeing them all one above the other in close proximity, so comparison is very easy.
  • It's worth pointing out, as I did not do the daily yesterday and Mr C seemed to be otherwise occupied in terms of linkage, that we created an Amazon store for Sidepodcast. The idea is we put in recommended books, DVDs, music, and more, and if you buy from there, we get an Associates cut of that. We're taking suggestions on what should go in, although I think I'm a little behind on those already!

That should do it for now, although it would be remiss of me to post this daily without highlighting some of the outtakes of our offline show. I linked to them in the comments yesterday, but here they are for posterity:

Things you didn't think you'd hear Mr C say:

Speaking is hard:

I expect too much:

That really is all now, I'll see you in the comments.

    Looks kinda useless to me

It doesn't look like it'd do much protecting.... Maybe it stops you getting a draught in your eye? :P

  • RG15/02/2010 at 00:21

It doesn't look like it'd do much protecting.... Maybe it stops you getting a draught in your eye? :P

Possibly when there is loose snow or ice it stops it going into the eye, especially at those speeds.

  • Steven Roy15/02/2010 at 00:22

when they put it on it looks like they have put tight cling film on their face and it scares me. Of course i know it isn't, but it looks horrible..

It is just an aerodynamic device it has no safety function

    Really?

  • Steven Roy15/02/2010 at 00:24

Why is it so thin and flexible?

It's just to cut drag and it is the minimun they can wear that will do that. Having a nose stuck in the airflow would cause drag

    Hy, guys, morning!

Very off topic — sorry for that! —, but is anyone here watching NBA All Star online? They have a fantastic player with multy angle cameras and a mosaic that is very interesting...

Theres even a board on screen with statistics of the game that you can consult any time you want. I think is good stuff...

I know Nick was trying to make me watch it earlier.... I'm not so enamoured. You can watch it online I think, I'm not sure if there's replays. I can try and find a link if you really want?

Has anyone kept up with the Americas Cup? I couldn't find it broadcasted here. Sad, I hate the thought of missingit.

Well, unfortunately you have missed it. They did have live streaming on the web site, although you had to download their client. It was interesting for the technology, but sad for the fact there were only 2 races, and only 1 challenger.

    Amazing pieces of kit though!

  • Journeyer15/02/2010 at 04:24

They had a medium-res version which required no DLs. But yeah, the race is done.

The America's Cup is really a head-to-head, Paul, but yeah, I wish it was a best-of-9 (as it was in previous years) than this best-of-3 we got. I like the idea of less restrictions on the racing, but a best-of-3? They could do a LOT better.

  • paul15/02/2010 at 04:36

This one was just full of law suits. There was no challenger series, although with the cost of these boats, i'm not sure how many challengers would turn up. Also, running it in the middle of winter was a weird choice.

Maybe they should do a budget cap? ;)

This is like a more extreme version of F1 in that there is a bigger cost premium for each restriction they take away. And also unlike F1, these teams aren't as well-established or funded.

Ah... did you sing happy birthday dear work?

  • RubberGoat15/02/2010 at 09:19

shall upload when I can be bothered going upstairs :D

You need a lift... i dont know how i lived without one!

Take the stairs - it's cheaper than a gym!

  • Nick in Dubai15/02/2010 at 09:19

    just how lazy are you!

    :P

my building is secure, so if i go in the carpark level i can only get to the upper floors using the lift ;)

That's actually it - the worst thing they can do right now is stay silent. We're just 4 weeks away from Bahrain, and... nothing.

he also said races are much better to watch on TV and he doesn't like the F1 engine sound because they suck compared to the old engines (ie the ones hes never actually heard in person to compare). Gosh he's odd.

Responding with silence isnt the most effective policy, i was sceptical when i read it, but with them saying nothing whilst everyone else tests i am beginning to believe it.

To not even announce when you will launch/test is very odd at this stage of the season.

One would hope that they are going silent because they are making final preparations...

...But isn't it less than a month to go? That leaves about 3 weeks to get the car ready if they wanna make the plane on time? When was the last time a car was launched so late?

  • Nick in Dubai15/02/2010 at 09:45

Windsor said Bahrain is the goal, so perhaps they are not doing either?

but he went to the trouble of getting permission to test in the US? It all seems a little chaotic and strange....

To be fair, the V10s and V12s have a richer sound compared to the V8s. It was also nice when they all didn't sound alike.

They have 1 shot to get the crash tests right. If they fail those, they won't make the Feb 20th-ish shakedown, and they're pretty much toast.

he likes motorsport, but is one of the ones staunchly hung up on how much better it was years ago. Even though he is only 26 so wasnt actually born at the time. He went to the NZ Festival of Motorsport earlier in the year, the one that was celebrating Bruce McLaren.

I dont mind opinion, i like debate. :D I love the discussions on Sidepodcast

But people who come at an issue firmly in the mind that only they can be correct and other peoples views are irrelevant generally arent all that fun.

And one of my favourite PC games (Plants vs Zombies) is finally on the iPod :D and at only £1.79... what a steal. It gets super addictive mind you.

  • Journeyer15/02/2010 at 10:42

Late starts lead to audience slump

F1 viewers slipped by 13%, the first fall in 5 years. The UK bucked the trend, but it slipped in other areas. The news article blamed later start times that conflicted with other sports. But I seriously doubt this, as most race start times didn't change.

Is the unusual title battle (no Ferrari, no McLaren) a more credible reason for the slump? And is this why Bernie so desperately wanted Schumacher back?

  • Journeyer15/02/2010 at 10:45

This one took quite a bit of crafting, too. It's easy to write about a daring overtaking move, whether it is successful or not. But writing about strategy and trying to make it interesting... not so easy :)

    They have 1 shot to get the crash tests right. If they fail those, they won't make the Feb 20th-ish shakedown, and they're pretty much toast. {Comment #165}

Given that the FIA put in a new frontal "crush" crash test on February 10 that all teams must pass before Bahrain, everyone else is in pretty much the same boat. Stupid but true...

Ugggggggghhhhhh. My earlier prediction was right. No lecturer. *grumbles to self*

  • Alianora La Canta15/02/2010 at 11:56

F1 viewers slipped by 13%, the first fall in 5 years. The UK bucked the trend, but it slipped in other areas. The news article blamed later start times that conflicted with other sports. But I seriously doubt this, as most race start times didn't change.

    Is the unusual title battle (no Ferrari, no McLaren) a more credible reason for the slump? And is this why Bernie so desperately wanted Schumacher back? {Comment #193}

Ferrari and McLaren have a massive amount of the fanbase between them, so to have both of them doing badly would not have gone down well. None of the drivers or teams in the title fight had captured the imaginations of people before the season began. Unfortunately I can't get the page to load, but I'd be interested to see the breakdown of countries and races because that would offer more clues.

I expected rule changes, just not such fundamental ones at such short notice. It looks like Jean Todt's era will be no better than Max's in certain important respects - though I will grant that the Jean era will at least have a better grasp of grammar.

If anyone missed it yesterday, I've analysed the differences between the Technical Regulations released this week and the ones released in July at my blog.

  • Lukeh15/02/2010 at 12:00

is there no where you can complain to?

We have a course review this week or next week and I don't think anyone on our course is going to give a positive review based on what everyone else has been saying too. It's a shambles really and I know I'm repeating my same complaints from last week but if you're paying for something you should be expected to get what you pay for, not what we're getting :(

Can't stress enough how finishing iin May/June will be a complete relief

I'd go to the Student Union and complain to their information helpdesk if I were you (not to be confused with the university's information helpdesk, which will cite a conflict of interests as a reason not to assist). They should be able to tell you the correct procedure for protesting poor academic quality.

Last year was amazingly worse. We had 5 lecturers for the same module because none of them could agree with the module learning outcomes, one of them thought 20 minutes (in a 3 hour time slot) was a proper lecture, another one didn't think it was necessary to the course (??) and I gave up caring why the other lecturer asked for a replacement. It has been quite a shambles...

Formula 1 lost more than 80m television viewers last year as a result of later start times for races, according to documents released by F1 Group.

A consequence of the later start times was that these races were broadcast in the evening in Asia. According to the F1 report, this meant that 'Formula 1 was broadcast in direct competition with domestic sports such as the Chinese Football Super League

    so... late start times:

    - made it harder for drivers to see

    - caused the malaysian gp to be aborted

    - lost FOM 80 million views

can we get a slow hand clap for bernie please?

    From the same item

F1 Group, which is majority-owned by private equity firm CVC, receives about £290m from broadcast rights a year.

£290 in a year and Max sold them 100 years of rights for $300 million because they could not make a profit otherwise. Time for Todt to re-negotiate I think.

In the UK, universities are supposed to have to meet a quality standard if they want to charge more than the pre-top-up rate, and a simpler one to have a charter in the first place. The trouble is the lack of quality enforcement. The ombudsman can force courses to close and the students to be fully refunded, but the process to get that done is lengthy.

    I haven't read the thing yet but surely this can't have been the only reason. {Comment #297}

One would expect a drop of 1/18 (to 554.9555555555 million viewers) through losing a race and this should now be regained because 2010 has more races than 2009. However, this leaves 32.9555555555555555 million viewers unaccounted for.

The Pitpass article from which this is derived admits that Brazil's figures plummeted after Felipe Massa's accident and that stars such as Alonso and Kubica didn't perform well enough to attract the legions of supporters they've accumulated over the years to the TV screens. All three of these drivers have a chance of doing better in 2010 than 2009, which would improve Brazillian, Spanish and Polish viewing figures respectively.

However, the start-time strategy was a factor as well (and the most avoidable Pitpass could see) because it meant Far Eastern audiences had to decide between F1 and, for example, Chinese domestic football.

There is no age you can be ever that poeple won't make comments about. Just as there is no way you can look, nothing you can do and no opinion you can hold that won't result in someone making a comment

People make a lot of assumptions about your age though.... I've had people demanding to speak to my manager more times than I can really count. I'm sure they wouldn't behave like that if I was older.

    As in Customers?

It's more to do with looking older I guess, rather than being older

That is true but if you are going to be more senior than the majority of people your age that is something you just have to deal with.

it's not like they're a series with a thread to be followed.

  • Alex Andronov15/02/2010 at 18:41

wouldn't it makes sense to watch the current ones now. like, while they're relevant and stuff?

perhaps. I don't mind. I'm not really watching them in order but in order from when my subscription started. But I don't want to think about that.

The thing I am keen to avoid is any element of choice in the matter. Because I don't want to think, "that doesn't sound very interesting I'll probably skip it". The times when I consider skipping are often the most rewarding watches.

  • Alex Andronov15/02/2010 at 18:41

i understand that. i don't see why order has to come into it? watch all the talks, just watch this weeks at the same time as everyone else.

it isn't likely to happen, but say i find something worth sharing. i'll say "check this out alex" and in three years time, you'll reply.

the university are trying to scare me by putting words like 'photographic practitioners' in their letters when what they really mean is 'photographers'

What about retouchers or photo manipulators. lighting cameramen etc? Not Photographers exactly....

You should try a Scouts International Jamboree application form.

Here is a post concerning weighted scores after evaluating the driver performances in various ways over the last month: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/02/08/2009-driver-rankings-summary/

Write about Jenson. In all honesty in my time writing about Timo, its not a regular thing, its not as if you have to write about him everyday.

problem with starting a JB blog is that i could probably write too much about him.. which would be scary.. I may try it, i'd need to think of a name and some interesting things to write about first i think :)

if i'm honest, you'll likely have a better chance of getting into f1 with a blog, than with uni.

i'm not saying you shouldn't do uni, i'd just personally place a blog higher up the importance scale these days.

I don't think you're ever really going to recruit for things like engineers like that.... Not unless every profession is doing it.

Arts and creative professions always seemed to me to be about getting seen/heard by the right people. Getting your demo tape played to the big producer or whatever. I feel like twitter is just an extension of that. Maybe in some regards it's easier to be seen.

  • Alison15/02/2010 at 22:54

I don't think for engineering posts, possible others within the team. You have to think eventually the teams might get more than one person to run their websites ;)

  • lou15/02/2010 at 22:56

how is an f1 team going to find you tucked away in a university?

    you make a good point.

okay i'm going to take a few days to get my half term work done and then i'll have a proper think about an f1 blog and what i can do in that area. As i said it's something i was considering at the end of the year, you know following the championship winners etc but now i don't like them :P

  • me15/02/2010 at 22:56

I don't think that's how you're going to get the best engineers no....

    fair enough.

i personally wouldn't employ anyone who didn't have a fundamental grasp of microblogging these days. and what better way to ensure it.

    oh?

    Thing is i want to do the whole uni thing, as well as having the opportunity to push my photography forward. So they'd be no question of me not going {Comment #540}

Given the number of people in my class at uni who got blogs (I was considered a tad unhip for only getting mine just before third year because by then only three other people didn't have one...), I'd say blogging and uni are relatively simple to combine. In fact, the broader outlook may help the blogging effort.

  • James15/02/2010 at 23:10

  • Alianora La Canta15/02/2010 at 23:10

    clearly they're listening to twitter, google alerts etc. they have been since we started sidepodcast and now teams are being proactive about it. how long before f1 recruitment happens on twitter? i say this year. {Comment #543}

I don't think recruitment via Twitter will ever happen, though I definitely see potential in Twitter streams being used as a method of "screening" candidates and as a precursor to head-hunting (especially in the PR side of operations).

When evaluating candidates the first thing we do is see if they have twitter/facebook/etc. and look at their stuff (if it's public)

Then mark it private and make sure only your friends can see it.

We try and get as much PUBLIC info on someone as we can when evaluating. If they don't have public facebooks or twitter or anything like that, we certainly don't hold it against someone.

But there are a LOT of young folks out there that need to be a LOT more careful about what they post in public places.

You never feel the cold because you are working so hard. So long as you get the right gear the cold is not a problem and I really don't like being cold. I evn got stuck up a mountain in a blizzard where I couldn't see my knees once when a tow broke and even after 45 minutes in that I was still warm.

  • Alison15/02/2010 at 23:58

its the same distance, should be equal

It doesn't seem to be the distance. Maybe it's psychological. It looks too hard to build up enough of a lead on the inside to keep your advantage when you swap sides.... I've not seen anyone do it!

    in f1, or generally? because it is already happening elsewhere: {Comment #580}

In F1. Direct Twitter recruitment may even happen in junior-level motorsport, but F1 teams have too many good candidates rather than too few. There is also a healthy, well-functioning verbal grapevine. As a result, I think jobs in the future will continue to be primarily acquired through that grapevine, with the wide array of information types possible through traditional recruiting methods ensuring that the application-interview-reference approach remains the method for recruiting for jobs where the team hasn't made its mind up which candidate to hire.

Twitter may become one thing that could prompt a positive "grapevine" response (hence my comment that it could be a pre-cursor to headhunting) but I see no reason why F1 vacancies, for example, would be posted to Twitter in preference to Autosport (digital or dead tree), for example.

  • me16/02/2010 at 14:19

Twitter may become one thing that could prompt a positive "grapevine" response (hence my comment that it could be a pre-cursor to headhunting) but I see no reason why F1 vacancies, for example, would be posted to Twitter in preference to Autosport (digital or dead tree), for example.

There's no reason why they wouldn't, either.

How searchable is twitter though? I think if I were jobhunting and I had to try and root through hundreds of companies' tweets on the off chance they mention a vacancy, I'd be quite peeved...

    I don't think they should, either, but you shouldn't be broadcasting all the stupid things you do. {Comment #587}

It would help if we knew what employers would deem "stupid". While there are obviously stupid things that definitely do not belong in the public domain if avoidable, there are subtler things as well. If previous experience is anything to go by, a lot of employers seem to think competence is stupid (or at least threatening) and a few seem to think my existence is offensive (because I blatantly don't fit some stereotype that particular organisation constructed that nobody fits and the people who invented the stereotype least of all), meaning that what exactly you can write in public is... ...absolutely nothing!

on its own, not very, but i linked to this site yesterday: http://tweetmyjobs.com/

f1 is no different from any other industry and i can very much see formula 1 jobs appearing in this format this year.

Twitter might be free, but if teams get the recruits they want through Autosport, why widen it out and waste lots of time discarding extra applications? They have to pay people to process applications and teams typically get hundreds of "spec" applications a year as it stands. With Twitter it would probably go to thousands because the opportunity cost of someone finding an ad that way is so low. At that stage, even the five seconds to read and mentally reject each of the superfluous ones costs a significant amount of money, probably justifying the price of an Autosport advert on its own.

Think of it as a hidden barrier to recruitment that weeds out lots of unsuitable candidates. In Year 7, there was a "higher maths" class that students could be referred to if they were really good at maths. What the teachers didn't tell you was that there was a hidden test you had to pass to get in. The classroom where the class was held had a swipe card machine like all the others at the school in question. However, said machine was not in an obvious place, but hidden behind a whiteboard and some other stuff. If you couldn't find the machine, you couldn't register yourself as in that class... ...and were therefore assumed not to be bright enough to absorb some of the arcane logic used in the "higher maths" class. There is no logical connection between ability to find a swipe card machine and mathematics, but there did seem to be a correlation between them which only became apparent as the students' in-class results started coming in.

In organisations which struggle to get suitable candidates, Twitter offers some major advantages over traditional advertising methods because there's more chance of at least one of the candidates actually being competent/good/outstanding in the job in question (delete as appropriate). However, F1 teams are not among them. What they need to improve their processes are new methods of distinguishing between outstanding candidates rather than more ways of finding said candidates.

Apart from Autosport is known to work for the F1 teams' purposes and Twitter has yet to prove itself in that regard. When there is no good reason to change, inertia generally wins.

but do they? how can you be sure?

^^if that were true, we'd still be posting letters to each other?

what about convenience, speed of response etc?

I can't imagine how you know that, Alia, so I will butt back out of this conversation!

am guessing alia's starting her own f1 team on the sly.

Because if they didn't they'd already be using other methods in combination or instead of Autosport and the "grapevine". It's not as if there's a lack of choice and teams plainly know, for example, what Twitter is. It's not that much of a jump between having conversations with fans on Twitter and offering work to them through Twitter (OK, it would be for Bernie and the FIA, but never mind...)

    if you say so.

the fun thing about this is, by the end of the year an f1 team either will have advertised a job on twitter, or they won't have. and one of us will be right and one of us won't be.
