So... the weekly version of the daily post didn't work, and now we are back to some of the more fabulous regularly scheduled 24 hour posts. Instead of listening to me all day every day, we've got some guest writers lined up to take over the daily on various days. More information is available on the wiki, but for now, here are some things we're talking about:

  • For my first daily back, I want to plug our good friend Alex, who is continuing to make us jealous over on GetJealous.com. After a short break working for some more pennies, Alex is back following the F1 circus around. Yesterday he tweeted that he went running after Buemi's wheel, and that is the kind of story I want to read about!
  • It seems as though a certain Mr Eddie Jordan is stuck on the ground thanks to the Iceland volcano, and will therefore miss appearing on the BBC for the Chinese GP this weekend. I can already tell how happy this makes a lot of people, and I am supremely tempted to watch the BBC footage just because. Even though actually I will probably be asleep.
  • Alex has been in a bit of a panic regarding SofaF1 as it had to be moved to a new home, but now that is all set up and working, don't forget to go along and pick your selection for the pole poll this weekend. I'm still intending to participate, and you don't want to be beaten by someone who's not even watching, do you?

That's all for today. I have missed writing these, and I'm glad we'll be back to daily threads from now on. Let us know what you're up to, and I'll see you in the comments.

    About what?

I guess about a daily spontaneously appearing in the middle of a weekly

iPlayer. If you are entering the realm of the casual fan, iPlayer is the way to go.

Ah yes. I can go back and change the name of the other one if that helps.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:12

    Having a Daily for a ... er, day :D

I don't think it matters but if you want to be really accurate I suppose you could

I guess having a weekly and the odd daily is fine

    Might confuse the de-lurkers though

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:13

What was the issue with the weekly, too big?

    Hi Amy

    hola

  • Christine16/04/2010 at 23:15

Oh yea! I should have called him Giggles.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:23

Oh yea! I should have called him Giggles.

How long before he's just known as DJ Giggles?

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:25

I'm hungry. Can someone please bring me some breakfast and remind me that I should stop volunteering to work Saturdays to get more Spa money?

  • Steven Roy16/04/2010 at 23:26

I'm hungry. Can someone please bring me some breakfast and remind me that I should stop volunteering to work Saturdays to get more Spa money?

I would get you donuts but I hear the queue is horrific

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:27

Oh man, the queue on a saturday is the stuff of nightmares.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:30

... remind me that I should stop volunteering to work Saturdays to get more Spa money?

    But Spa money is good

Bring cereal to work, I eat far less crap by bringing stuff in

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:33

Spa money is good but not being at work is better. I normally have cereal in my desk but i've run out. Must take a trip to aldi on my break!

  • me16/04/2010 at 23:34

..and is yours full of random German things as well?

  • me16/04/2010 at 23:36

you can't get stuff from germany to australia that quickly can you? the best before dates will expire in transit.

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:41

Aldi works here because the australian supermarket landscape is a duopoly and so prices are pretty high at the two main chains. Aldi stuff is not often german here, its normally made in australia or new zealand, but it is all the random "aldi only" brands.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:42

It's weird that German goods are thought of as high quality, yet we have two German supermarkets at the budget end of the spectrum

ah-ha. so your aldi is like german aldi. whereas as ours is more like knocked-off german aldi leaftovers :)

    Ah I see.

I'd have thought the two big chains would compete against each other until prices got low...

Australians are quite fannatical about their "Australian made, Australian owned" philosophy

    I guess "Cheaper" wins everytime

I do like some of the Aldi or Lidl goods... they can be a bit hit and miss but when you get a good one it is very good.

The store layouts drive me mental. Also, like Asda, shopping at one becomes a bit like an episode of Gladiators

  • Joe in Fla16/04/2010 at 23:46

    Evening everyone

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:46

I like cheaper. I get so excited when I see bags of pasta for 19c each. Aldi biscuits are really nice too.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:46

    Hey Joe!

Maybe you get out more ;)

    [Though don't spend any money]

What is the likelihood that Q3 will be streamed?

Can't say the layout bothers me, the cheap feel of it does, and half the products being tat. We're getting a Lidl here soon. There's uproar in the local rag. :)

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:48

What is the likelihood that Q3 will be streamed?

    Very likely, they usually are

    Someone having a link...

  • Joe in Fla16/04/2010 at 23:48

    Sorry, I meant FP3

Bernie's a tool. On Indiia being added to the schedule next year:

When asked by AUTOSPORT if India would be an addition or replace an event, Ecclestone said: "We are not dropping anything. [It's] 20 races - getting ready for 25."

  • Joe in Fla16/04/2010 at 23:50

    Very likely, they usually are

I hope so, stuck at work, nothing on TV and debating if I want to get up at 0200 to watch Qualy

  • Amy16/04/2010 at 23:51

I'll get out more in 127 days.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:51

I hope so, stuck at work, nothing on TV and debating if I want to get up at 0200 to watch Qualy

You should look if you haven't

    A lot!

  • me16/04/2010 at 23:54

    He's joking, that's his humour..

yup. joking about people's livelihoods and people futures and people careers.

    he's a tool.

  • Bassano16/04/2010 at 23:54

    He's joking, that's his humour..

Was he also joking when referring to China's empty stands and contract negotiations:

    "We're happy with everything"?

    He's just odd

  • Joe in Fla16/04/2010 at 23:55

Was he also joking when referring to China's empty stands and contract negotiations:

He does make me laugh sometimes when Martin catches him on the grid but he really has lost the plot lately

    Undoubtedly

  • Joe in Fla16/04/2010 at 23:58

He does make me laugh sometimes when Martin catches him on the grid but he really has lost the plot lately

When the SpeedTV grid walker (formerly Peter Winsor, wonder what he's up to now?) corners him, he always shoves an American celebrity in front of the camera. Maybe that'll placate us at not having a race....I dunno

  • paul17/04/2010 at 00:02

(formerly Peter Winsor, wonder what he's up to now?)

    Not getting in the paddock

  • Joe in Fla17/04/2010 at 00:04

    I should still get a USF1 t-shirt, I think there's a few on E-bay

  • paul17/04/2010 at 00:05

They had tshirts? Maybe you could look for the toasters as well

  • Joe in Fla17/04/2010 at 00:06

They didn't, I think you could buy them from Singapore, obviously unliscensed.

Two kinds, one has 14 serves one has 11. I love that Heikki video because it lets me know that as insane as I feel because I love his gorgeous girlfriend Catherine, there are people who will put her face in a jigsaw puzzle or on a rubiks cube.

why would anyone think he'd like that?

Wow! A present present came a day and 3 hours eariler than expected... And it was not clothes!

Welcome back from the Land of the Dead, Sidepodcast!

I take it that the F1 podcast extreme diet did not go so well...... (Check Smarter Than Your Average for this reference)

I have been doing a little bit of F1 research while you have been gone, for my blog site. I have reason to believe that from at least 1984 to 1994 but I just want to be sure. If I am correct, I have a barn burner of a chapter to post on my blog as I use a previous seaon from F1 to show, as bad as this year is, we could have a hell of a lot worse.... (Like instances of the best two cars (From the same team) lapping the entire field...)

    Still 6th....

    wow that's impressive...

  • lou17/04/2010 at 08:07

bye steven, have a nice day!

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 08:44

that might sound sarcastic.. it wasnt meant to be, i love that Kimi appears to be doing well in Rally

    Thanks lou...

I was pleased for Jense last year too....

SS12 has started and Kimi is on the road... (I keep nearly saying track!!)....

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 08:47

Petter had saved his new tyres for the final stage.... and there is now talk that the final stage may be cancelled....

Petter won't be happy if that's the case....

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 08:48

    Oooo....

Rain is starting... and the first part of the next stage is tarmac...

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 08:53

Kimi faster than Villagra on SS12... currently 6th on the stage and still 6th overall....

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 09:21

In the opening sector (on tarmac) of SS13 Kimi was fastest... faster than all the others ... by the next split he'd dropped back a bit but still very good... fingers crossed...

Sordo just finished with tyres completely shot...

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 09:25

    Yuck...

Looks like JM will be getting in the way of Kimi on this stage....

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 09:32

But he got past and hurrah...

He was 6th on the stage and 6th overall....

    He didn't talk.... now there's a surprise...

Jari Matti in and they are making the point that he won't be looking forward to getting back to service and getting a b********* from Mr Wilson....

I was in the main grandstand opposite the Toro Rosso garage in Shanghai in 2007...

Apart from the Kimi victory and Lewis destroying his tyres the thing I remember most was the Toro Rosso guys leaping up and down and jumping into each others arms when Seb got a 4th in damp and miserable conditions....

The Red Bull garage was deserted... they were 8th and 10th... even Liuzzi in the Toro Rosso was 6th....

I do like some of the Aldi or Lidl goods... they can be a bit hit and miss but when you get a good one it is very good.

The store layouts drive me mental.

They built a new aldi in our town and they had the same layout as usual but MIRRORED!! It made me dizzy :)

No because Citroen will want him to be just in front of Loeb tomorrow...

He actually stopped and we don't know why yet... he lost over 3 minutes...

Also the stewards have said that any tactics will be penalised under the "bringing the sport into disrepute" rules....

so I'm kind of not worrying about it too much :) what happens happens as they say.

that's just reminded me of the Douglas Adams quote:

Anything that happens, happens. Anthing that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again. It doesn't necessarily do it in chronological order, though.

  • Alex Andronov17/04/2010 at 13:56

indeed. We arranged this and booked it only two weeks ago which is pretty minimal for travelling abroad.

The above shows that not only is Schumi lower on the grid, but over 7 tenths slower than Nico.

And Seb V. is really very scary when it comes to getting out a fast lap.

And... rain tomorrow? There hasn't been any sign of rain today. I'm guessing it's not too likely we'll get rain tomorrow, unless the strong winds today are pulling in some rain clouds from the Pacific.

And I've been wrong before. :)

  • MarileneRiddle17/04/2010 at 14:27

Btw ans to your poll is both. I think Nico is doing better than he should and Schumi... :P

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 14:28

if his form stays this way, i'd rather he not stick around as well. but if he stays as a Merc consultant (which i think is very likely), he might still visit the Oz paddock next season.

He was around at Ferrari all the time over the last few years...

  • Journeyer17/04/2010 at 14:28

And Seb V. is really very scary when it comes to getting out a fast lap.

His form right now... is terrifyingly good. But will his car stay in 1 piece tomorrow? The cooler than usual temps have helped them, I'm sure, but the rain throws in another unknown variable. But then, they did score their first win here last year in a rainstorm...

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 14:28

    Kimi is on the stage...

    Got to the second split...

  • Alex Andronov17/04/2010 at 14:29

straw poll: do you think Rosberg is actually performing better than that car should, or do you think Schumi isn't getting the best out of that car?

the in car made it look like Schumacher was out for a Sunday drive.

However they are going to totally change the car to Schumacher's taste for the next race. I think this will put Nico behind him but won't make Schumacher faster.

  • Journeyer17/04/2010 at 14:29

So does anyone know when F1 went to having a ban on refueling that ended in 1994? I would like to say it was in 1983, but I am not sure....

IIRC, it was at the end of 1983, effective 1984. No Wikipedia here, though, so can't verify.

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 14:30

However they are going to totally change the car to Schumacher's taste for the next race. I think this will put Nico behind him but won't make Schumacher faster.

    This would be soooo wrong....

I will boo him personally if that happens...

However they are going to totally change the car to Schumacher's taste for the next race. I think this will put Nico behind him but won't make Schumacher faster.

Given Nico's gap right now, I'm not even sure that's a given. And I'm not sure Ross will completely move the car to Schumi's taste, as well, given how well Nico has gone. I don't think he'd want to endanger Nico's good run so far.

Q: (Carlos Miquel – Diario AS) I have a question for all the drivers about the volcano; are you worried about getting back to Europe?

FA: No worries, I hope to get back to Europe normally.

SV: I will rent a car and drive back.

MW: Yeah, I’m in the same car as Seb, we’re going back together. Or I go to Australia, I keep going this way.

    FA: You swim.

MW: I keep going this way.

    SV: One stop.

MW: I can keep going that way.

    FA: You can swim. {Comment #226}

This is comedy gold - how does Fernando not know Mark can swim? :D

    The latter I am afraid...

There's an old country song about this... I shall have to think....

  • Jordan f117/04/2010 at 14:32

Journeyer said after today's efforts, i honestly do not see that happening.

today was just... sad. 9th when your not-so-highly-rated teammate is 4th isn't good.

straw poll: do you think Rosberg is actually performing better than that car should, or do you think Schumi isn't getting the best out of that car?

I have always had doubts about Michael Schuamcher's abilities since Irvien was beating him fair and square to about a third of the way into the season when Schuamcher broke his leg at Silverstone.... Irvine was leading on 36 points and Schumacher had 30 if I am not msitaken....

Too bad that Hakkinen won the Driver's..... I would have loved to have Irvine end Ferrari's dought from 1979!

Someone will have to verify this, but I think Schumi was ahead of Irvine on points by Silverstone. He definitely had more wins - he won at San Marino and Monaco, while Irvine only won at Australia.

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 14:36

    Loeb, Solberg, Hirvonen....

I think I am too, just because I'd love to see him in a masters final. And I do love me some Verdasco/Nadal matches. Although, I do think Nadal will slaughter him. Then again, I said the same thing at the Australian Open last year.

    Irvine 10-12-12-20-24-30-31

    Schu 0-6-16-26-30-30-32

Irvine started the season ahead and remained there until San Marino (race 3). However, Irvine caught him again at Canada (race 6) and Michael was just starting to break ahead when he crashed at Silverstone. So Michael was ahead but Eddie gave him a run for his money.

Eddie ahead for the first two races and then caught back up at Silverstone... at the end of the British weekend they were level...

I think this happened because Schumi had 2 straight DNFs at Canada and France. Assuming he didn't break his leg at Silverstone, that would've been 3 DNFs in a row headed to Germany. Given how well Salo did there, I think Schumi would've won at a canter, and gone on to win the title again.

Ultimately, it's hard to judge one way or the other.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/04/2010 at 15:16

    afternoon folks

finally got some sleep and am nice and fresh

    :)

  • Pat W17/04/2010 at 15:40

So I watched quali in bed on the netbook, in a sleepy daze, luckily got the online feed going just as the Q1 green light lit, then fell asleep within minutes of the Q3 flag. I thought I'd slept for an hour or so after, it turned out to be quite a bit more.. went for a walk in town, nice and sunny, found I had a parking ticket, bought sunglasses.. Nice day.

    Here is my summary:

Q1: by the numbers, no surprises

    Q2: don't remember

Q3: Expected McLaren to get 2 top threes... looks like RB might walk away with it tomorrow. Schumi 9th. Heh.

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 15:41

Everyone is talking about the tires. 'Will it/won't it rain tomorrow?' I think that is the major thing, and Toro Rosso may get into the points because they actually tried both set-ups and still managed to get 12th/13th.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/04/2010 at 15:50

    Hmmm...

Odd little accident in IndyLights practice at Long Beach - Miller went off in turn 3 hitting the tyre barrier; then about 6 seconds, later Strous went too hot into the same turn and hits the tyre barrier at virtually the same spot, putting to two drivers side-by-side.

    Guys,

Hope you enjoyed Qualifying today. I have to tell you about the awesome team building event we did yesterday – we did the usual stuff but I got to try off roading and we took part in a Le Mans-style 2h24min karting race, which I started for my team and they gave me half an hour!

It was so intense starting the race – once you are strapped in and the visor goes down, you really get tunnel vision and have to really focus to concentrate. I got a good start but it was really physical – great fun and a lot more intense than any simulator can provide!

After my stint finished I did a driver change in the pits, then later on we had to refuel the kart and change the front tyres.

It was really great fun and well worth a go – I think I ticked four things off my bucket list yesterday :D

I would love to know what caused McLaren's drop off in pace in Q3. I don't think it's just tyres eh!

But that clashes with Dr Who.

  • me17/04/2010 at 17:06

The ambush interview bit with Whitmarsh and Horner? Yeah it was. Not impressed with BBC's insistence on having Eddie Jordan though!

didn't see it, but i said earlier, we talked to joe in china just fine.

It was extremely funny that just as he got going it cut out. You would think BBC would have set up an ISDN line or something a bit more secure!

Hey, Gavin, I put you down for Wednesday daily posts, which means writing on a Tuesday night - is that okay?

And I'm happy to be asked to swap days if people have to for various reasons too.

That's good, thanks Gavin. I figure it's all very flexible really. I'm there as backup always, and I've signed up for the weekend posts, but if anyone else wants to do a one-off or anything I can easily step back. It's all good :)

  • me17/04/2010 at 17:23

This story is just sad. Poor girl... :(

One woman, camped determinedly outside the Mercedes garage with a banner bearing the legend "YOU BACK WE BACK", was found not to have the correct pass and dragged away by security in floods of tears just at the point the great man emerged.

    well done f1.

  • Christine17/04/2010 at 17:24

ooh. is this a sneaky attempt to get us to plan now? please do bring stuff, even if we just turn up in belgium for a holiday and miss the racing, we wouldn't want to miss the trip!

I was going to say in the Downshift thread, you should come anyway. It is a lot of money to spend on not liking F1 but you should come for the social stuff and to see F1 cars going through Eau Rouge.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/04/2010 at 18:14

    IRL:

Unsurprisingly, Milka Duno is currently last of the runners - some 11 seconds slower than the fastest. That's her genuine pace by the way....

it's too much money to give bernie for providing zero entertainment though. just on principle we shouldn't go. just like i want to turn up to monaco on the only day there's no racing :)

Are rally drivers allowed in Christine's ranking? Because I think Dani Sordo deserves at least one point for this.

    Shanghai was great....

The main grandstand awesome.. the back straight exciting...

Only problem was the mozzies round those pagoda things at the back...

    There are many worse tracks...

  • lou17/04/2010 at 19:08

that would be awful! no hotel changing colour

I don't care about the paddock. It could be hovering for all I care.

Number 1 in a field of 1? Mind you with Christine's rankings it'd be possible not to manage even that.

Whatever happened to edge, controversial, hate me because I'm so annoying Michael though? The dullness of the mercedes livery sums up his season so far, it's really odd. Ralf-esque.

If that car supposedly struggles to find pace then Nico wouldn't consistently be qualifying and finishing where he does...

    Agreed....

It's like Schumey finds himself in a parrallel universe and can't believe he won't wake up on the top step of the podium any minute....

He hasn't realised it's called "getting older".... and self delusion...

well, if Ralf Schumacher finishes first in DTM and wins every race by a bajillion miles after launching rockets at everything and setting up Mario Kart weapons around the track for him to use only...

    I'm sorry, that's very over-reactional. It's not a bajillion laps, really. ;)

  • MarileneRiddle17/04/2010 at 20:11

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 20:12

He was my number one in 2005/06. Then he went to McLaren

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 20:14

well, if Ralf Schumacher finishes first in DTM

    Or even ... beats DC.....

  • Lady Snowcat17/04/2010 at 20:15

The cars on track now are IndyLights machines, but yeah the IRL cars are clunky; however one must remember that they were designed purely for ovals.

But that was my point - I have been all over Denmark this week and we have had brilliant sunshine and clear skies. No ash has fallen and there is not even any thick clouds...

    i feel bad that i was once impressed by malaysia and china circuits. {Comment #582}

Once upon a time, people were impressed by the concept of "streets in the sky".

Few people remain fond of 1960s tower block developments, especially since most of them have been pulled down for not living up to their promise (understatement).

Likewise, Malaysia and China used to be big, innovative and exciting. Now they just look big.

  • Leigh O'Gorman17/04/2010 at 20:55

How has the quality of the field dipped so much in one season?!

but it's all in the upper atmosphere right?... i know it's an absolute pain, and horrible that no plans are flying but things could be much worse if they hadn't cancelled flights.

One of my friends went to bahrain to see her dad for the easter holidays and her flight was cancelled. She's now facing possibily missing her Alevel spanish speaking exam in 2 weeks as the next flight they have been told they can get is in 15 days time. She's not happy.

If the very clever science people think planes will fall out of the sky because of it, I'd rather they were grounded.

    15 days?? That's crazy!!

apparently so, there may be a chance to get back sooner though.Luckily her dad has a flat out there, otherwise it could get a bit expensive. My school is going to be deserted this week, seeing as about 1/2 of the students (especially 6th form) are borders that fly in from Europe, China, Japan, and Nigeria...

have to say am glad he's not coming back, he looks too happy to drag him back. i never saw him smile that much in f1.

He likes the greater informality that's true and I can't get excited by F1 now he's gone....

But I am enjoying rallying.... and you do see a lot more of the country when you go rallying than you do going to F1....

I originally wanted him back in F1 but now I am not too sure what I want him to do... I suppose just to be happy.....

Fair enough. I've been in an Ash cloud and it just seems very different to what I have seen this week. But like you said I have no idea about the science so if they reckon there's a risk then it's always safer just to keep them grounded of course!

Neither do I to be honest. But I swear that I remember as clear as day that there was a really thick fog which seemed to cover the whole country, and the volcano itself was spewing tons of smoke when we passed it...

I am not sure. But the point is, we flew within 100km of a volcano they knew was spewing ash, and this time we have a volcano hundreds of km away shutting down the whole of European airspace....

    ... 3) Justin Wilson

    I wonder how profitable that "Invest in Wilson" offer was in the end? {Comment #778}

It doesn't finish until the end of 2012, so no definite answers yet. However I'd be surprised if the investors haven't at least got their money back by now because Justin must be on a couple of million of dollars per year and 90% of it is ringfenced for the investors.

For example, if he made an average of $1m a year since 2004 (because I don't think he got paid for the F1 bit in 2003), then the investors should have $4.5m between them. And at the level of success Justin has had he's probably earned a lot more than $1m a year. This is before counting the Le Mans attempts, merchandising stream, whose income is also capped.

Note that the investors only put in £1.2m in the first place (the rest of the $5m Justin needed to get into F1 came from sponsorship). So if we take it that Justin had 9 years to pay that money back and 90% of income is ringfenced for that purpose, then Justin only needed an average income of £132,000 a year to pay the investors off and £264,000 a year to double their money. In other words, I think the "Invest In Wilson" programme has worked rather well, even if I don't know the exact details (only people in the scheme have access to the necessary financial documents to confirm everything).
