Welcome to the new look daily, which is actually a weekly. I know it still says Daily in the title, but we're working on that.
Things have changed a bit at Sidepodcast, more about that here, but in other ways, it is still exactly the same. We're still celebrating birthdays, plugging good stuff and ramping up to the racing this weekend. Here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Very Happy Birthday to Amy who celebrates today, and to Paul who we might have missed in our brief hiatus. It's also JPancoast's birthday on the 14th, RG's on the 16th and Jordan Allen's on the 18th. It's a busy week for birthdays, I hope there is a lot of cake flying around.
- Whilst we were absent from the comments, it seems as though everyone decided to start up new blogs. Jon is taking on a mammoth challenge with his new I Can't Run blog, Lukeh has created a special place for his Doctor Who thoughts on the Wibbly Wobbly Bloggy Woggy, and RG has taken up a co-blogging position on Triple League Racing. I love new blogs, more of the same this week please!
- Lady Snowcat wrote a brilliant guest post for us about her trip to Jordan to watch Kimi in the rally. We've followed her through Sweden, and now on to Jordan - two completely different events. Ms Snowcat describes them so it's almost like you were there. Whilst we're on the subject of guest posts, Giggles Radio was great fun yesterday with one extra host added to the mix. Well worth a listen.
We're encouraging guest posts more than ever, as without us waffling on, there is plenty of room for you to have your say. Email any thoughts to [email protected], and you know how it goes, I'll see you in the comments.

I'm a little cautious about this - they're saying the track may not be finished until June and if the circuit gets examined before June 24 the race will still go ahead. They're cutting it fine though, assuming Focus magazine is correct.

I can't say I would be sad in the slightest if it was binned. The track layout looks really dire, which is saying something for Tilke's usual level of awfulness. I know we're on;y judging now from the designs rather than basing it on actual racing but I can't see the track being anything but a dud

I don't think that can be done at this late stage, though it may be possible to negotiate a compression of the calender if action is taken quickly - four weeks with no race seems silly to me too.

Imola has been heavily modified since our last visit, no? The stretch from Rivazza 2 to Start-Finish is almost unrecognizable. Tamburello is still a chicane, but I think it can be revived in future. They just need to make the turn-in earlier to allow for run-off room.

Spec series
Spec-spec series.
F2 = Spec spec series. Basically its centrally run, there are no teams, F2 run all the cars
GP3 = Spec series. Lots of different teams

How is that fun?
A variety of teams (usually GP2-level or just under) come together to run hired cars painted in the liveries of football teams. They are actually quite good cars with beefy engines. Each team runs a car each for two football teams. They recruit a driver who may or may not have a lot of single-seater experience. e.g. Bourdais, Doornbos, Karthikeyan.. or a relative newbie like Dolby.
Three races.
Race 1 is 45 minutes.
Race 2 is 45 minutes with a totally reversed grid.
Race 3 is the 'superfinal' and is a 6-lap shootout with only 6 cars, those which have scored the most points over the other two races that weekend. The winner of the superfinal wins €100,000.

It's a completely different way of working in F2, you have 1 race engineer that you share between 3 of you (who gets rotated every weekend) and a mechanic who stays with you for the whole season. Testing is limited so everyone has the same time in the car, these and other factors means that if you get a good driver who can cope well in this environment then they're going to do really well.
You said that the F2/FPA model was better because the cars were equally prepared so that meant we can compare drivers equally.
I disagreed and said GP2/FR3.5 was better because the drivers can work with engineers to learn car setup.

Unfortunately their track choice may work against them.
I remember it vaguely, as I say, in principle it should work, but as a series all drivers need to be of a really high calibre for it to work. FPA works because most of the guys have little car experience

me too. I like that there are lots of national championships, but from an international POV a single system like that works best. With less championships you'd get a better grid too

In car performance and power yes, but GP2 is seen (correctly) as a driver development series and where drivers are usually not paid. He's not a young driver and he quite rightly wants paid work.

No. I don't think it was EJ's fault, he was brought in as a reserve and test driver to get experience. He got thrown in at the deep end when Pantano couldn't make it in Canada and shone. The last three races came, was consistant and plodded off to ChampCar. He had a decent career under him before F1, don't think he was too early, no.

The third and final spacewalk of the shuttle mission starts at 8:11am UK time tomorrow morning. NASA still insist in having that ridiculous odd minute in all the time. No mention of what the sidepodastronaut is doing this time but she was in charge of the last one and will probably either be in charge of this one or be operating the station's robotic arm.
At least this spacewalk is happening when we are awake.

I am not sure. I received my shiny new 3 year visa for that horrible country today and will be heading up north next week. not for F1 though. Went there 2004-2007 and at the moment have no intentions to go back to see that race, ever
its definitely the only one "close" to me I have no desire to go to.

I don't have any issues with needles, but when we had the BCJ one in school or whatever the heck it was called, I was nearly sick. Not because of the needle or anything, just from waiting. It was really surreal. Never been like that before regarding injections.

I fainted last time I gave blood for a test - although it was probably due to the fact that I had had nothing to eat or drink that day before the test. The time before I was fine!

the number of injections I've been given / blood samples had taken by students is ridiculous. well into double figures.
you're forced to sit through a running commentary from the doctor on how it's done before the student nervously attacks you.
it's so hard to say "no thank you, incompetent students scare me" though
I had a blood test for an operation on my chest about 3 years ago and I spent the entire test laughing because it felt like I was being tickled. The nurse gave me such an odd look...
I had a surgery about 10 years ago and a student put the needle-input-thingy in my hand, straight into something that wasn't a vein. It still hurts when I put pressure on that part of my hand :(
I just wish they'd wait until I'm dead before using me for medical research!

When I had a battery of tests last year for non-existent Epilepsy, they did an EEG(?) test where they stuck a load of electrodes to my head, asked me to close my eyes and flashed a strobe light repeatedly at me to see how I reacted.
The colours and shapes are so pretty that it's really enjoyable! When I was asked afterwards how I felt. I told the nurse I really enjoyed it and she said "Oh, normally only the kids say that!"

That will save us some money on holidays". This has never really been funny but I think that if I repeat it often enough it might work :)

I am convinced the biggest risk to Microsoft is Google Docs. It's also the biggest risk to Apple right now. People probably think I'm an Apple fan boi but I have to say that the way Apple has messed up online syncing of documents makes me think they really really don't get the internet.
Apple's reputation seems to have taken a nosedive in the last year. Even on Leo's shows where they almost all think Jobs walks on water you hear a lot of complaining about various aspects of Apple now
But Google doesn't understand marketing anything like Apple does. Which probably explains the fine balance between the two of them right now.
As an interesting aside... I remember an article by a guy who worked at Microsoft and moved to google. He said that to get new computer equiptment you had to get things signed off and approved in triplicate and by the time stuff arrived it was out of date and this is at a software company. At google they have a stack of equiptment on every floor and you can go and get whatever you need. Google's IT costs less to run than Microsofts...
Also Joel Spolsky visited both Microsoft and Google's headquarters last year. At Microsoft's office while waiting in reception to get on the wifi network he had to sign a declaration agreeing to the terms and conditions of using Microsoft's in office wifi and a second signature stating he wouldn't ask the receptionists for technical support if it didn't work. Google's free wifi was open and available in the cab on the way to the office.
I think these things tell you everything you need to know about how the companies think about people.
Don't get me wrong Apple is fantastic... And I can't believe these people complaining that it's not fair that Apple won't let flash on the iPhone... Show me the other phone's running full flash and I'll get back to you!

I only watched this weekend's race and he wasn't at fault, there was a mechanical problem which they repaired but it left him 22 laps down and he ran a good pace after that.

I was trying to do a series of recreating F1 incidents in stop-motion using plasticine and paper. There would have been music of my own creation if I'd ever got the timescales for making the videos down to an acceptable amount (it was taking six hours to do two minutes of rubbish-quality video).

I can't believe I've lived in this house for two years and always have my keys with me, then do this twice in one week. It's my mums fault, I went to the post office to pick up my birthday present from her and I only took my keys because I knew I wouldn't need anything else. Then when I got home I grabbed my bag and headed to Bending class and the keys were not in it.
Wondering whether to march into the lecture room and demand tosee my tutor as promised... She's taking ages!

The thing that gets me about that program is that there seems to be 40 minutes of fluff involving everybody be all moody about what they saw, mope around and just blindly follow their visions as if they have no free will. Normally this also seems to include 10 minutes of footage that has been seen at least three times.
Then, something interesting happens and we learn a tiny bit about why there was a flash forward, then the programme ends. Bah!

So I know you're all fans of good podcasts here. I have been really liking a podcast called "the pipeline" by Dan Benjamin. It's kind of techy mfc style things and it is very good. Worth checking back with the past episodes he's been getting some really good guests. This week he has Jason Snell from macweek. He was the first person who I kind of thought something negative about, "hmm do I need another mac based thing this week"... However this episode turned out to be the one that makes me recommend it to you all.
Jason edits the most popular mac magazine and yet he is a publisher that gets it. He says on the episode, I'm paraphrasing, "people keep telling me I've got to keep certain features just for the magazine... But what does that do? It means you have a poor website and a magazine that people don't read because they don't know about it. As a print magazine publisher you are going to get eaten alive. So you might as well cannibalise yourself."
It's worth a listen.

Mainly because in tennis there a lots of tournaments and some are optional so you can't do them all. Therefore those you choose to do you must try to aim some consistency in them. Plus the bigger the event the more the points. Over all a very tidy system, but suited for that sport in particular.

Your local newsagent is likely to have something useful for adding colour to your card if it's big enough, even if it's coloured paper, glue and scissors. Supermarkets, art and children's shops also work well for this task.

So in midseason you could see the last year's worth of races without having to calculate their scores from June onwards and add it to this year's scores up to May.. not allowing for stupid changes in points systems

Well done Jim, looks like a tough event from the video (and fantastic that you took video!). Looks hard to learn the track.
We got to walk the track a couple times so that helped. It was rather hard for me, as I wear glasses and have bad depth perception w/out them. I wasn't wearing contacts that day and got lost my first run. Came home with an 80 second lap or so that run.
All in all it was a pretty fun day and my first win of the season. I'm hoping to repeat this weekend to stay on top of the points standing.

old airport is doing nothing :-) but some redevelopment plans that include new town and cruise ship terminal have finally been approved. no chance they would use such prime land in this expensive place for race track :-)
They should not have messed up the Zhuhai track ... (right across the border from Macau). That track was to replace Argentina, but they somehow in proper Chinese fashion forgot to build it to f1 specs and lost the race :-) The track (althought not good for F1) is however alive and kicking with lots of racing going on there every weekend, unlike on that white elephant in middle of nowehere near (or far away I should say) from Shanghai.
Zhuhai has another problem with standing water doesn't it?

In my case, I'd cite the fact I haven't encountered infinity in or as a set yet, only as a group of five different things, only three of which I could actually define for you (countable infinity, standard infinity and infinity of infinities). Science of Discworld III claims there are five infinities but I didn't understand its explanation of the other two.

I don't agree with Mav's conclusion. I left the 2 in brackets specifically to make sure it didn't lose its identity to the infinity it would be multiplied with and the 1 has a plus next to it for the same reason. Otherwise you lose all the negative numbers and the zero out of the description of the number line's size.
That's how come "infinity+1" can make sense. You have an infinity and you have a 1. If you equate that, the 1 is lost in the infinity. However, if separate they have distinct identities and can be worked with. The expected result of "(infinity+1)/2" is odd but if you do "infinity+1=result then result/2", the answer will be even.
Dividing the described number line gives the following:
((2)infinity+1)/2 = infinity+0.5
which is odd.

Yes. 3 was on offer a couple of years back and 2 wasn't on the shelf at my local bookshop at the time (my library has barely got round to having 1 on the shelf, but I was reading that back in university). Luckily they are almost standalone volumes - they continue on from one another, but all key points are re-told in the text and updated where science had overtaken the previous edition (particularly a problem for the cosmology sections of the series).

Jenson would be a good commentator I reckon. The only issue I had when he did Monaco a few years back was James Allen watching Jenson in the box instead of the race, and it got annoying. But I'd like to see him do it. Rubens would be a good Martin Brundle type of commentator too. This is clearly biased though in both choices.
Also, Karun Chandhok, the man who clearly can do anything.

It is killing me that there were 131 books and the file I have only has 120 of them. It's enough to make me not want to read any because it doesn't seem right to skip 11 of them.
He can! He's one of the most inexperienced guys in the paddock yet one of the most level headed and pretty spot on guys I've seen so far with the way he adresses problems, interviews, the HRT lack of generally anything, he's handling his F1 life very well and is fantastic with the fans.

Depends who you're conversing with - it tends to work best with people with the same amount of Twitter time as you and who are willing to converse. I've had conversations with quite a few people using the medium, but it's taken some getting used to.

Yes, I'm not arguing it's a good idea, it's just the only way to make things interesting in the current format. It's the only way to force multiple pit stops per race.
the funny thing is that they got it right on bikes. if you're too hard on the tyres, you pay it by the end of the race. is not uncommon of seeing a rider coming in the last 3-5 laps 1 sec per lap faster than the guys in front of him, and even fighting for the lead after spending the whole race fifth.
I can't see a tyre manufacturer doing anything that reduces the perceived effectiveness of their product unless they are trying to appear faster than the competion

It can save cash. They can use lesser compounds that work great up to a certain temp, then get diminishing returns there after until it reaches a point where performance drops off due to graining.
My R-Compounds work this way, they work great up to 160ish F. After this, they get greasy and begin graining.

Not really. Most of my tweets are replies to other people. It's just that replies to other people don't turn up in the general streams. You have to either be a recipient of the message or search for something that happens to be mentioned in that tweet. It means most people don't see most of my tweets because they were not the targets of that particular conversation.
This is why I use people's Twitter names in search (minus the @) if I'm particularly interested in a conversation they've been in even if I'm following them.

LCM Alfa, as usual, is having de la Rosa, Senna, Massa and Kubica. And please could more than two of them finish this time round?
LCM Barato has dropped Kovalainen because he's too expensive and replaced him with Petrov. Others on the team are Senna, Chandhok, Trulli, Glock and Kobayashi.
LCM Caro is changing a lot this race. Alonso stays put, but Massa and Button have been chucked out in favour of the Red Bull duo.
LCM Dragons, despite being the team that supposed to change most often, is sticking to its team of Sutil, Kubica, Hamilton and Rosberg.
LCM Fire Lizard remains Sutil, Button, Hamilton and Liuzzi.
This gives selection statistics of:

He rents the circuit from the Turkish government and organises the event. A bit like he did at Belgium a few years back and made the event financially unviable (leading, in combination with some tobacco problems, to it falling off the calender in 2003).
Still, he should be able to make the event profitable if anyone can. If it's not making him a profit, then being the businessman he is he won't keep hold of it.

If it's in line with the FIA regulations, the limit that used to read 16/17 (the teams got paid a fixed amount of compensation for the extra race but had to do 16 without that compensation if asked to do so) now reads 20. Above 20 (or in the old days 17) and Bernie would have to negotiate with the teams on a case-by-case basis.

They have just started SS6 (SS2 from this morning) and it's narrow and flowing with light gravel on a hard base....
I managed to get in a few close up pictures of Kimi when he was attending a Ferrari function. I wasn't invited but the security around the waterfront pubs are quite lax for the ladies so I sneaked in.
As for the rest, mainly saw them around the orchard shopping centres on Thursday and Friday. Ferrari held another function there, and Nico R, and the Brawn drivers also showed up there (for no apparent reason)
Oh and Heikki was at Clarke Quay. I was there trying to see Sebastian Vettel and the Red Bull crew but saw him instead. Was in a rush though.

The next stage starting soon and the end of this will tell us the road positions for tomorrow's tough day.... although there is still the later SSS in Istanbul...
Don't forget that any tactics and that could mean slowing for position could mean stewards taking action until the "bringing the sport into disrepute" clause...
They've said they'll use it if they see people playing silly games....
I think quite a few f1 drivers and team bosses would not pass WRC's stringent stewards.

The promoter is convinced they will if he gets it right. This year is a big relaunch with more car makes and shorter races. It has attracted more 'pro' drivers.
Nobody wanted to pay money to watch rich amateurs share with a few pro drivers (it is GT racing so two drivers per car). So they've said right, we'll put the amateurs in GT2 and GT3. And they made the top series single-class, not a mix of GT1 and GT2, so the headline race is the cream of what they have. In theory.
Oh and the other reason is that the FIA are backing it because they can then claim they have another FIA World Championship alongside F1, WRC and WTCC.

Can someone help explain to me why there seems to be a different camera position on each car... after both Crofty and Steven said this morning that they should all be the same. The asymmetrical ones aren't a good look.

In all fairness the black and white flag is just a leftover from the days of stop/go penalties - they just never took it out of the rules

The flag has been around for decades, stop/gos and then drive-thrus became more fashionable.
I always get a black/white flag when i play F1 on ps3 online. i cut a corner just a liiiiiitle bit, get the flag, and a 6sec slowdown penalty.
i thought they made the flag up. guess not.
i had to learn these flags and what they meant when I took part in the Formula Woman selection process

didn't get any further than the driving tests, i made a mistake on my assessment run and selected 3rd instead of 5th! doh! perfect on my test runs
I watched a few of the shows, it was an interesting concept but I felt flawed in a few ways. Judges included Tim Harvey and a pre-ChampCar Katherine Legge, I believe..
it was shown after the grand prix on itv one year, i decided to apply and took part in a driver asessment day at the top gear track
And Legge was absolute b***h to some of the contestants.. though this may have been down to editing..

I did think it a little off that one of the frontrunners allowed to take part was the sister of Ralph Firman, who was a Jordan driver at the time..

It's not just rocks. A lot of volcaninc ash is basically glass that becomes glass when heated - for example in a jet engine - and then coats all the blades in the engine. Oh and then it stops the engine running

IndyCar held an event in the middle of Hollywood last night and it made it on to the BBC website.... very unusual. but it was in the entertainment section..
Mansell used to slag off Prost a lot so his stupid fans would believe him. When Prost was at Ferrari with him Mansell was always saying Prost wasn't a real racers because he spent all his time making the car do the work so really the car was winning not Prost. Absolute moron.
In their season together Prost won 5 races and Mansell won one. Prost scored 73 points while Mansell managed 37 and Mansell already had a year with the team while Prost was brand new to it.

He annoyed me in his second Indycar season too - when he won in '93, he blatantly talked about it was all down to him; yet in '94 when he wasn't winning, it was everyone else's fault. That irritated a lot of Indy fans - many of whom were glad he left by the end.

I started out as a bit of a fan but I very soon got fed up with the dram queen act. It was especially annoying because he was seriously brave. He broke his neck in FFord and was told to stay still in hospital for months but he signed himself out and went back racing. His first F1 race they were topping up the fuel on the grid literally with a funnel above his head. He got a lot of petrol down his back which gave him serious burns. He did 44 laps of the Oesterreichring like that before the car packed up. Yet he would still pull the drama queen stuff over minor things.
