There were breakout threads all over the place yesterday as the news kept on pouring in. Personally, I'm hoping for a bit of a calmer day today, but you just never know with F1. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • It's all about the new Lotus F1 team, how they will fare, and what the grid will look like now that BMW have found a buyer as well. We've got a breakout thread for this, and we're still trying to fathom out how the FIA made their decision.
  • Over on Pitlane Fanatic, Maverick has written a highly researched article called: Born to Cheat? It takes a closer look at human behaviour and asks the ultimate question - can the teams help themselves? Also, don't forget the Pitlane Fanatic quiz, as it is Wednesday.
  • The daily Sidepodradio update - we have now got most of the pre-recorded shows completed, which is great news. If you are still to do an Interviews with Bloggers segment, please get that in as soon as you can. More info is available on the wiki. If you're a show host and are going live on Sunday, let us know if there's anything you need, and we'll do our best to be as ready as possible!

That'll do it for now. We're midway through the week, and I don't know about anyone else, but I'm starting to get all excited about Sidepodradio. Is it Sunday yet? I'll see you in the comments.

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 23:20

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 23:21

Hey Pat, did you manage to sort out your Excel - image exporting in the end?

Yeah, Gavin told me an easier way... instead of print-screen just do copy/paste :-)

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 23:21

There'll be a better one, guaranteed

There may not be a better flat. There HAS to be a better agent.

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 23:21

Yeah, Gavin told me an easier way... instead of print-screen just do copy/paste :-)

Cool, easy when you say it like that

  • Paul15/09/2009 at 23:25

Has anyone seen the post race press conference in full, they cut Kimi off on the beeb?

I think so. Did you see the end when they went back to Rubens?

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 23:25

I think so. Did you see the end when they went back to Rubens?

    Nope

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 23:26

I'll have a search for it soon, tomorrow's lunch won't make itself...

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 23:26

    Nope

Have you checked the iplayer? i am sure i saw that

  • Paul15/09/2009 at 23:26

    Nope

OK. Kimi really didn't say too much, just the normal stuff, then they went back to Rubens, said how old he was, and he said how great things are and there would be a good fight for the rest of the year

  • startledbunny15/09/2009 at 23:27

I think so. Did you see the end when they went back to Rubens?

    Just watched it now, why?

  • startledbunny15/09/2009 at 23:27

    Just watched it now, why?

    comment fail :)

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 23:28

    That is a given

They rearranged the viewing day to a day later. OK, can't make it, fine.

On the day the agent didn't show up due to 'traffic' so they had to send a colleague who was at the gym, I was kept waiting 15mins. In the meantime the next appointment arrived.

They work Saturdays but I couldn't get through. OK fine, probably doing viewings. I leave a message and try again later, same result but I see no reason for a 2nd message.

I called Monday when I got to the office. Person you need is out, she'll you call back. Didn't. I call back in the afternoon. Flat gone. "Everyone who viewed it wanted it, I said let me know ASAP" "Well I did leave a message first thing Sat" "errrr, did you? I didn't get it, anyway it went to first to view not first to reply.."

  • Amy15/09/2009 at 23:30

lots. you have no idea how complicated the parade is.

one day i'll blog it. we have a whole radio station in our office.

    you did?

lots. you have no idea how complicated the parade is.

How complicated is a Panel then?!

  • Andy Taylor15/09/2009 at 23:47

    you did?

Yeah, but they're either too expensive or don't have dual headphone sockets.

  • startledbunny15/09/2009 at 23:48

lots. you have no idea how complicated the parade is.

one day i'll blog it. we have a whole radio station in our office.

I can imagine. You two, Alex, Music, Then maybe callers, and there's more probably I haven't even thought of. I'll wait for the blog post :)

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 23:48

erm. no idea. what have i missed?

    I find, one sec

  • me15/09/2009 at 23:48

How complicated is a Panel then?!

very complicated. we can bring on callers via skype, who can talk to alex (on a different skype), mix multi channel audio fades, duck audio when we talk and fold all of that back mix-minussed to alex/two callers.

  • Paul15/09/2009 at 23:48

    duck audio when we talk

    Quacks?

  • me15/09/2009 at 23:49

Yeah, but they're either too expensive or don't have dual headphone sockets.

ahh. have you seen the new ones from mackie?

    very tasty.

  • me15/09/2009 at 23:49

    Quacks?

    low bridge.

  • Andy Taylor15/09/2009 at 23:49

I thought the Panel was relatively simple with most of it happening via Skype.

  • Jon Waldock15/09/2009 at 23:50

    Christine:

Just been told "Wasn't sure at first, but been thinking about it and I do like your hair short." They've been thinking about it for a month?

    BC:

But what does Kanye think? We need to know ;)

    Christine:

Best haircut of all time, obviously.

    {The jury is out, on the joke - not the haircut}

  • me15/09/2009 at 23:51

I thought the Panel was relatively simple with most of it happening via Skype.

ahh, misread panel as parade. although we only have one setup now, soo we can do the same for all shows.

  • Andy Taylor15/09/2009 at 23:52

ahh. have you seen the new ones from mackie?

    Nice.

Ducking audio is a technique where you lower the volume of something you want to talk over. DJs do it all the time. Garageband (and Logic?) will do it automagically.

  • me15/09/2009 at 23:52

You could be saying anything and I would have no idea. It's nice to be out of your depth sometimes. :-)

To be fair, i'm quite impressed at their ability to record a debrief in front of an online crowd who are watching their every work and not kill each other. However, when the sound goes and the camera stops but the time keeps going, we alllllll wonder whats going on ;)

Hmmm I am yet to be convinced by the tshirt/shirt combo... it can work, but you need specialist shirts.

Doing it with normal shirts just looks like you put your clothes on top of PJ's

    Ooh it's loaded up!

I'm going to pretend I'm Tony Hawks, the skateboarder from Morris and the Minors.

Or who's the latest hot dude on the skateboarding scene? (in the voice of Alan Partridge)

Like I'd know. At my age. Although Extreme Sports is quite compelling.

    See you later.

Hehe, i have seen them at goodwood, pretty much to the point i could tocuh the cars, but it might be nice to see them racing in the flesh.

I dont want to miss the tv coverage and live timing though so hopefully i will be somewhere with tvs, a big screen or get a kangaroo thing...

Kangaroo is everywhere, as are jumbotrons. 2007 GPC I was sitting at about the 5th grid spot. The start of the race was really cool and watching the podium ceremony was great, but I prefer to be on corners, so I'm thinking the 2010 GPC at the hairpin

Btw, have you considered Brooklands for your itinery? I remember it being pretty good, i am considering going n the next week or so

(no way inspired by Jakes ridiculous attachment to the monza banking)

  • Joe in Fla16/09/2009 at 02:44

Sorry for that. But got some great news that GPC is back on for 2010 (I think we all suspected that anyway)

  • startledbunny16/09/2009 at 02:46

I tried to get an HTC Magic at work, but the software we're using requires the aforementioned WM, so no luck. I've not heard a bad thing against it.

I have a HTC HERO which was the subsequent model, it has quite a lot of stuff HTC built on top of Android, so if you need Exchange support it does that. You can also get aps to read office docs i belive

I think I spotted someone on my Twitter stream saying they just updated theirs, and now it's superfast.

At Work we use a package that tracks engineers, online, allocates them service calls, and allows them to fill in details on the phone to clear jobs.

We can, when it's up and running, track an engineer for a day.

I went down to London and back, and this thing showed my entire journey path for the day.

I would have preferred something that was not Windows Based. This thing we have now (Touch HD) is slow.

Not nearly as much fun, from what I can tell

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 06:39

Masterchef? Is that like Iron Chef?

Errrm I haven't encountered this.... Masterchef involves 2 pretentious chefs/food critics judging ridiculous food made by people that get themselves so worked up that they think it's a good plan to put nutella on their fish.

Makes my cooking sound positively yummy.

Heh I've never seen anyone actually use nutella. They do put awful foods together though in a panic. I think it's hillarious. Mainly because the judges are so pretentious and they get so outraged when they see bad food.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/09/2009 at 06:43

Hmm... Iron Chef involves two pretentious chefs, one a 'gladiator' and one a 'contender' and two sous chefs each who have to cook 5 dishes in an hour, with each dish making use of a secret ingredient. Then three very silly pretentious people judge the food.

It's cooking as a spectator sport - very silly and very entertaining!

Can't possibly be as good as the Japanese, it's just too crazy. Also, afterwards the "judges" taste the meal, and they always include some cute young actor or similar. :-)

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 06:47

And there's also an American version too...

Masterchef seems to take itself a LOT more seriously than this. This series, the contestants had to "earn the right" to cook in front of Michelle... He sent one of his minions to judge. It cracks me up.

Ironic that the F1 team is leaking more than the dodgy cars they make are!

    More?

  • Maverick16/09/2009 at 08:35

    More?

I'm gathering all leaks concerning Renault and Singapore under one search term: Renault

Not inferring they came from them, perhaps #Singapore08 would be better?

I've not heard any leaks since Piquet's statement came out. I'm obviously blind.

to summarize: after that came the telemetry, radio conversation from the race, the replies non replies Symonds gave the investigators and yesterday the copies of letters from Flav to Piq senior

It happens when a browser 'saves' a page after closing and subsequent re-opening - just re-load the page and it fixes it...

to summarize: after that came the telemetry, radio conversation from the race, the replies non replies Symonds gave the investigators and yesterday the copies of letters from Flav to Piq senior

What (roughly) did the telemetry/radio show?

  • Journeyer16/09/2009 at 08:59

Found this awesome book today called The Treasures of Formula One. Going through it now - it has some lovely pieces and copies of some great artifacts from F1 history. Definitely worth looking at. :D

What (roughly) did the telemetry/radio show?

A very lead-footed throttle application out of the corner - no feathering or gradual increase in pressure, just a stamp!

  • Journeyer16/09/2009 at 08:59

What (roughly) did the telemetry/radio show?

Telemetry indicates PK may have done it on purpose (although the telemetry in itself is a bit inconclusive) and the radio messages show them discussing the strategy for Alonso...

not much in proper court a lot perhaps at WMSC

of course Symonds may still decide to fill the gaps he left when talking to the investigators

not much in proper court a lot perhaps at WMSC

Enoch Law of F1Rejects.com, who is a lawyer, says that the Symonds interview is pretty strong evidence that something was afoot. If explained properly, it looks like this is a winnable case for the prosecution is a proper court.

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 09:13

of course Symonds may still decide to fill the gaps he left when talking to the investigators

He's playing his cards close to his chest. Makes you wonder why he didn't deny it. He's planning on selling Flav out later on?

Or it could be that he is shielding Flav from fault. It can go either way.

    Scripted by Tarantino!

    You couldnt make this up!

From the pitwall, it seems like his engineer didnt know what was going on, but being told to push was his signal to crash. Flav and Pat are both really ramming the point home

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 10:14

I'm amazed this stayed private for so long then so much came out at once. He made these allegations back in July.... How did they come to be released to the press last week?

It sounds like Nelsinho is giving birth actually.

Maybe Flavio can get a job as a midwife?

  • F1Wolf16/09/2009 at 10:26

    Is this new?

not really, except some diagrams and more telemetry. but is all nicely organized in one place :-)

  • Paul16/09/2009 at 10:28

So there still seems to be no real evidence here that Renault planned the crash. I think it's going to take someone else to admit what they did.

    Why wouldn't Symmons deny it?

  • Paul16/09/2009 at 10:34

    Why wouldn't Symmons deny it?

Yep, that is the question that will be answered. I think there are things we don't know, and that will come out at the hearing.

From what we have seen though, it's all Nelson.

  • F1Wolf16/09/2009 at 10:35

he does not want to lie ...

  • Paul16/09/2009 at 10:38

That could be it. Maybe he wants to "keep his powder dry"

  • F1Wolf16/09/2009 at 10:44

now, with Symonds saying (or not saying) what he is saying (or not saying) I am really curious to see Symonds' words in the Renault defense files ...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/09/2009 at 10:50

Given that these things almost inevitably leak into the public domain nowadays, why not?

  • Stuart C16/09/2009 at 10:56

    Spoiler for Vatanen?

    http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/09/16/and-now-the-virgin-f1-team/

It looks like Branson will be a lot more hands-on here - one of his men will be the team principal, rather than Manor's John Booth.

  • Stuart C16/09/2009 at 11:03

We keep hearing that as a potential reason, but is that really what’s happening?

Short of bugging the offices of the people concerned, I couldn't tell you; however, all this sound and fury has the hallmarks of a classic diversionary tactic.

Ditto trying to persuade JYS to stand – splitting the 'anti' vote, just like in The Wire...

  • Journeyer16/09/2009 at 11:03

and how does that make his case any different from Todt's ?

Todt's ahead (in terms of reach and maybe even votes), while Ari is the one playing catch-up.

In other words, it seems that if the election were held today, Todt would win.

I see... Alan Henry thinks that the JYS move is a worry for Todt's camp, as Bernie may be persuading others not to vote for Todt. Is Todt still the likely winner?

  • Journeyer16/09/2009 at 11:07

    Not necessarily, but probably.

And look at their driver choice. One bad:

the latest suggestion is that one of the likely drivers is BMW Sauber test driver Christian Klien...

    ...and one good:

Another name that has been mentioned is that of Anthony Davidson, the former Honda F1 test driver for many years, who is now working as a commentator on BBC Radio.

    Oh, and a 3rd name:

There has also been talk that Adam Carroll, the A1 Grand Prix champion with Team Ireland this year, is also being considered for a drive.

I'd like the latter two, thank you very much.

  • F1Wolf16/09/2009 at 11:07

In other words, it seems that if the election were held today, Todt would win.

well, he has always been the favourite to win, hasn't he ? in any case, FIA president is not elected by public but by clubs. the votes are gathered behind the scenes, not in the papers ...

    (I am not Todt fan :-) )

  • Bassano Clapper16/09/2009 at 11:08

I'd like the latter two, thank you very much.

You forgot to add [sorry RG] :D

  • Maverick16/09/2009 at 11:09

Ditto trying to persuade JYS to stand – splitting the 'anti' vote, just like in The Wire...

I see... Alan Henry thinks that the JYS move is a worry for Todt's camp, as Bernie may be persuading others not to vote for Todt. Is Todt still the likely winner?

It allowed JYS to come out and throw his support behind Ari in the end, so it was a silly tactic if that was the idea.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/09/2009 at 11:09

Ah I forgot. But I linked here late last night and most people have read my latest post anyway...

    Ted News

I dislike how the Beeb are sneaky and link it on the homepage as Ted's blog, when it is the stoopid mole.

Still, there is added Rob, and little Renault, so I am happy.

  • Maverick16/09/2009 at 11:58

Ooh, Maverick, are you still doing Sidepodanory?

I hope so, I need to pre-record that urgently, just seriously busy at the moment.

Can do without more Renault leaks today

    It's a darned conspiracy!

    Ted News

"...the FIA asked the teams to come up with an immobiliser that would keep the car in the box if the fuel hose were still attached, even if the driver tried to pull away. Ferrari came up with the system and has been using it this season."

    that's brilliant. thank you ted.

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 12:58

    that's brilliant. thank you ted.

Is that why they thought Kimi hit anti-stall when he had his bungled pit at Monza?

  • me16/09/2009 at 12:59

Is that why they thought Kimi hit anti-stall when he had his bungled pit at Monza?

    yup. ted investigated.

  • Kathi16/09/2009 at 13:00

In Kimi's case, the fuel hose was off, but only just, so the trigger sensor cut the engine revs to idle.

    Kimi beat Ferrari's pinger

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 13:00

    yup. ted investigated.

Oooh. Go me and my random guesswork :D

"...the FIA asked the teams to come up with an immobiliser that would keep the car in the box if the fuel hose were still attached, even if the driver tried to pull away. Ferrari came up with the system and has been using it this season."

Can't you work that in reverse? Driver keeps his foot down and is released the instant the fuel hose disconnects?

  • Nick16/09/2009 at 13:03

In Kimi's case, the fuel hose was off, but only just, so the trigger sensor cut the engine revs to idle.

    Kimi beat Ferrari's pinger

I think Ferrari will be really pleased to see the end of refuling.

Its pretty incredible that we have had it for so long and they havent sorted themselves out

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 13:04

Can't you work that in reverse? Driver keeps his foot down and is released the instant the fuel hose disconnects?

No, I don't think so. Surely Kimi's stop shows that. He was visibly held-up by pushing the throttle too soon after the fuel came off.

  • Maverick16/09/2009 at 13:04

No, I don't think so. Surely Kimi's stop shows that. He was visibly held-up by pushing the throttle too soon after the fuel came off.

Not in this current configuaration, no, but can you make it that way?

  • Alex Andronov16/09/2009 at 13:05

    Random non-f1 question...

Did whoever was having the problem with the headers in php on IIS figure out how to fix it?

  • Nick16/09/2009 at 13:07

Can't you work that in reverse? Driver keeps his foot down and is released the instant the fuel hose disconnects?

Knowing Ferrari they would probably end up having a wheel stuck and end up powering down the pitlane on 3 wheels

  • me16/09/2009 at 13:10

Did whoever was having the problem with the headers in php on IIS figure out how to fix it?

was the answer, use linux? i think i missed/forgot the issue. what's up?

  • Alison16/09/2009 at 13:10

Anyways, I'm off back to work. I fully expect the world to have imploded by the time I return :D

It's a strange one... PHP runs. program results appear in internet explorer but in firefox the header isn't being fed through properly and firefox just tries to open the file.

  • me16/09/2009 at 13:12

Oooh but before I go, did you see my mental doohickey Mr C?

could you not add the following:

    header('Content-type: text.html');

    to force it to work?

  • Alex Andronov16/09/2009 at 13:14

yeah. it happens sometimes, not sure why though?

It's something to do with caching I'm pretty sure.

  • Alex Andronov16/09/2009 at 13:15

    header('Content-type: text.html');

I guess... this is on phpinfo() for testing

  • me16/09/2009 at 13:15

    header('Content-type: text.html');

    or rather:

    header('Content-type: text/html');

what are you using to cache?

  • Alex Andronov16/09/2009 at 13:15

what are you using to cache?

    Is Luekh around today?

Just wondering what his thoughts on the Muse album are....

For me i like but it rips off other Muse tracks in the process 8/10 (worth it for the 3 Symphony's at the end).

  • Kathi16/09/2009 at 14:28

Have you tried a different browser?

No but I know that the problem is my no script add-on. Until a recently I could enable the shockwave/flash/whatever thingie but that option is now gone. I have to disable the whole add-on or maybe change something in the set-up.

I am losing respect for David Coulthard

"Dare I say he would make the better ambassador for the sport? Jenson is in the middle of his career rather than at the end of it; he is photogenic; less highly strung and emotional than the Brazilian; he carries himself brilliantly and speaks intelligently (no Kimi Raikkonen-esque monosyllabic responses from Jenson); he is also a pretty chilled out customer. "

While I would accept that Jenson probably would be the more deserving in terms of performance (unless Rubens wins all four of the final races), I cannot accept he would be a better ambassador for the sport than Rubens. Sure Rubens is a bit emotional, but his passion for the sport and to be honest is concern for other people would make him an equally good ambassador. In my humble opinion both candidates are way better than the World Champions we have had for many years now.

I seriously do not agree with them being the weakest, in terms of performance both have done well this year sure there have been mistakes, but look at Hamilton and Fernando when they won.

You are spot on though. Jenson did not have the best of reputations until this year but people forget such things when you are winning.

Both are good ambassadors. Both are good drivers. Both are worthy champions. May the best man win, and may he do it sportingly :D

I feel really concious of knocking Jenson on here cos Lou loves him!

Good driver to get to F1 (clearly) but I feel in the same machinery against the last 4 WDC's he'd be eclipsed.

    Sorry Lou!!

it'll be interesting to see Interlagos again this year. Who'd have thought a Brazilian would be gunning for the title this year - and it ain't Massa?

  • Amy16/09/2009 at 15:20

You are spot on though. Jenson did not have the best of reputations until this year but people forget such things when you are winning.

I feel that even now his reputation isn't the greatest because it appears that he won lots at the start of the season when his car was by far the best, but he really hasn't done much since the rest of the grid has caught up to Brawn.

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 15:22

I am referring to their roles as ambassadors.

    Schumi cheated a lot (e.g. Monaco 2006)

Alonso blackmail his team and has temper tantrums and known cruelty to crash helmets and doors.

Lewis will lie to get another teams disqualified with little real qualms

Kimi - where he is a little bit boring when he talks.

Since you ask on performance - yea I think Jenson is at least as good as Lewis or Kimi - just a different style of driving. Schumi was working in team totally focussed on him so you cannot really know how great he was. So Alonso - yea I can concede he is a brilliant driver but we now know one of his wins should be discredited.

  • RCC16/09/2009 at 15:24

If anything it's taking a pounding in places, we always knew Jenson would be good to reach F1 but years of moaning and bad cars have kinda killed a few peoples passion for him etc. It really hasn't helped him he walked it when the car was good but has really struggled since then (This weekend not counting etc). He doesn't seem to outdrive himself say like Hamilton or Vettel (Yes SV has been a let down this season in some ways).

I'm routing for Barichello!! Come on Rubens lol

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/09/2009 at 15:25

That's what really worries me. He needs to come out and WIN the championship, not stumble across the line. Especially if next year's Brawn is not good enough to give him another winning car. I want Jenson to make sure he is a proper champion and there is not doubt that he deserves it...

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 15:26

Jenson has really grown up this year. If Rubens won the championship I would be pleased. Jenson admits that Ruben's technical ability has helped hugely in the success of the team. I will be really upset if Rubens loses a seat at Brawn for any other driver - he deserves that seat and the opportunities with it.

You see I like smooth drivers taking classical driving lines - when things are working right Button is pure poetry on the track. Rubens is a bit of a hustler on the track, but his total enthusiasm is such a pleasure.

Lewis is too aggressive, makes too many mistakes but he is persistent. Kimi is rather inconsistent and won the championship partly through McLaren's mismanagement of its drivers.

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 15:53

neither have been in a position to win a championship. it's easy to be nice and last.

We really do not know exactly how fast they are. Personally if Nick were in Mclaren I could easily see him having more points than Lewis this year but this would not imply he is a better driver, just better at finishing and on the tactics. If you look at the race statistics, lap by lap, fastest lap etc Nick is actually faster than Robert this year so - hardly last.

  • me16/09/2009 at 15:55

Nick is actually faster than Robert this year so - hardly last.

fair enough, i think f1 gets the champion that it deserves.

...and dc is moron, but that's a whole other argument.

  • Fiox16/09/2009 at 15:55

Has anyone got the feeling that the two main championship contenders are only there because of the cars and have very little to do with their driving skill? Barrichello, the ultimate number 2 and Jenson Button, the man in the midfield. Sebastian in his Torro Rosso last year had made a bigger impression than both of these drivers while having a comparable car (see Coulthard + Bourdais).

My preferred winner would be SebVet, but with dwindling engine numbers I know he isn't likely to win and the same applies to Webber my number 2 choice to win.

  • me16/09/2009 at 15:56

Has anyone got the feeling that the two main championship contenders are only there because of the cars and have very little to do with their driving skill?

No - the Brawns are not always the best cars. At the moment I am inclined to think the McLaren is the best car as it is good on fast and slow tracks and has KERS. This year it is really close between the cars so it does reflect driver quality more than previous seasons. Having said that there is no ways Mark Webber is the fourth best driver.

  • me16/09/2009 at 16:01

I tend to support underdogs though, so to see Rubens with good equipment is a real pleasure.

It did annoy me too, but then you see how much concern Rubens had for Felipe when Felipe's own team mate could not even be bothered to send an SMS. Then again to wish Fisi all the best at Ferrari despite his own situation at the team in the past. He did actually apologise to the team after the blah blah blah incident.

  • F1Wolf16/09/2009 at 16:05

Barrichello, the ultimate number 2 and Jenson Button, the man in the midfield.

Barrichello was the "ultimate" number 2 in Ferrari , but we know who was his team mate and we know that that team mate had guaranteed number one status ...

Button - well, he finished 3rd in 2004 drivers championship ... and when you look at the 2006 season I believe that from Hungarian GP on he scored more points than anybody else that year, including Alonso and Schumacher ...

No both Rubens and Jenson are better drivers.

Take away the ultra quick Brawn car this season....what else has Button done to be on par with Kimi, Lewis etc??

Apart from Hungary 2006 my mind goes blank at thinking of memorable Button drives. Wasn't it Ross Brawn who said this year Jenson's impressing because last year he hit anything that moved?!!

Rosberg has his doubts about moving to McLaren and is tempted by Brawn. Does that not make you think that the drivers have no fear of the 2009 champion elect but wouldn't wanna race against Lewis?

Rosberg was Lewis's team mate in karting in a team owned by Keke Rosberg. He knows what will happen if he is Lewis's team mate again so it is not that he has examined both and decided that Jenson is the better option for him. He knows Lewis beat him in a team run by his own father so given the choice he is better to take his chances with Jenson

I think Ross Brawn will provide a more equal opportunity to compete. If you join Macca you will be the second driver with the compromised strategies.

So it's fair to say you don't like Macca lol

You get the best strategy by being fastest in FP1, FP2, and SP1..Heikki this week was on a blinding strategy, heavier and quicker then the Brawns in qualifying...........

    Shame about his race though

I think Heikki is very much a number two driver at Macca - it is a strategy for the team to decide. What might be a good strategy for Brawn may not be a good strategy for a Macca. Hamilton/Macca could not have used a one stop as the tyres would have not lasted - as it was Lewis pitted earlier due to tyre rather than fuel.

He's a number two driver because of his results!! There's no question of it but he does get himself in a muddle and that's not the teams fault. If Heikki was quicker then Lewis then there be no doubt he'd get 1st choice etc..

They managed (Macca) to give Lewis and Alonso equal choice in strategies and were so fanatical about being equal that they come away at the end of the year with nothing when arguably if they put their weight behind one driver 2007 could've been very different........

The FIA sent a representative as there were claims Macca were not treating each driver equally wrt Hamilton/Alonso. Ron did say they were fighting Alonso not Kimi - sorry I do not buy the equal treatment they lost because the drivers were taking each other out. Back to Nico - I would still rather go to Brawn, no matter what Lewis will get preferential treatment at Macca (not say it is not deserved). In truth I do not want Nico at Brawn - I want Rubens and Jenson to stay. Nico can stay at Williams.

Rubens defo deserves that 2nd seat, I agree I wouldn't wanna see him go elsewhere. It'd be a little unfair I feel. Hopefully his early seasonal ranting won't count against him. I think to be fair whoever takes a second driver spot at Macca are really inheriting a poisoned chalice. If you were to go there and match Lewis or even beat him then that would be fantastic for anyones career but to be comprehensivly beaten by him would not do you good in the long run. Macca need a consistent plodder like Heidfeld to bring home the WCC and let Lewis do the hero to zero to hero stuff. I doubt anyone can win a WDC in Macca against Lewis but without a consistent second driver Macca won't win the WCC for ages.

The FIA has never in its existence sent a rep into a team to ensure equal treatment apart from one race. That can hardly be used as a measure of anything. There is not a single example that ha come out that shows less than equal treatment despite extreme provocation by Alonso

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 17:39

I do agree that Heidfeld would be a good fit, he really does seem to haul the points in no matter what he drives. While Heidfeld is my number one driver, I will concede he is unlikely WDC material and Lewis would be faster. Heidfeld has very good set up skills which could help the team, especially with the limited testing which I think really hurt Macca this year.

The FIA sent a rep on one race once and it was McLaren. How do explain Ron saying they were fighting Alonso? While I think the equipment was equal there are other ways of providing one driver an advantage, including motivation. I do not blame Macca for favouring Lewis over Alonso.

I have answered this question dozens of times on here and I am fed up answering it.

Ron was asked about Lewis. The only threat to Lewis in the championship was Alonso. Therefore Lewis's race strategy and strategic decisions were based on what Alonso was doing rather than Kimi who was miles behind. F1 people are programmed to say 'we' at all times. So when a journalist asked Ron about Lewis he said we are racing Alonso.

arrgh another quick Nick fan, kinda thought I was out numbered on here. I think Nick would be the perfect 2nd driver in relation to Lewis. I think Macca need that experience to help push the car forwards. Hate to say it but I don't think Lewis has enough experience yet to fully guide the team setup wise and i'm sure i've read reports of mechanics grumbling about him going down blind alleys setup wise. I think part of his great 2007 year was having Alonso give him a good starting point and sharing advice (well at least to begin with). I think Lewis made a mess a 2008 in places not having that technical knowledge to fall back on. Macca should've really gone for age over Heikki (sorry Heikki) in 2008. That said i've heard Heikki is a great test driver with great feedback but it confuses me why Macca would employ two drivers with such different styles of driving and approach to racecraft. Maybe Glock would be a good choice?

Lewis is the most extreme oversteer driver on the grid and Alonso is about the most extreme understeer driver. How did they share set ups when the want th car to behave in opposite ways? Who did the test driving that took this year's McLaren from being garbage to possibly being the fastest car out there? What have Alonso's legendary testing skills achived in 2 years at Renault?

Kimi could possibly challenge Lewis, even Robert, but strangely I think the one that would be the biggest rival is Timo. He is quite aggressive but he can also drive a car full of fuel better than virtually any other driver. Next year I think Lewis might struggle more with the full fuel tanks due to his driving style and this will put even more pressure on maintaining tyres (not a Lewis strong point). Alonso is still more fragile and needs more careful handling than any of the above drivers.

Timo is a very good driver - just overlooked. Give him a Brawn or Macca and I think he would be a serious contender next year. He (or the car) are just very poor at qualifying and this has hurt his result, but there are few races where he has not gained lots of positions and made more track overtakes than any other driver this season.

You stil need to move th centre of gravity and centre of pressure around to suit the two drivers and deal with different transient aerodynamics.

I'd very much like Glock to be there at some point, I like him alot. Don't know why but just do lol. A very underrated driver...

I was never really a Glock fan until just after the end of last season Clive posted a link to Lewis's GP2 drive in Turkey where he dropped to about 20th and charged through to second. The only reason he didn't win that day was Glock because he was the only person able to race wheel to wheel with Lewis and stop him overtaking. After that I said I would watch Glock closeley this season and I have been impressed with him.

Whether he is McLaren quality or not I don't know but he is clearly a driver worth watching over the next couple of years.

So you think Ron was seriously saying the team was racing against its own driver? If he wanted to stop Alonso he could easily have given him a few minor technical problems. Muck in the fuel, engine timing error, electrical and hydraulic failures. The last thing he would ever say is that the team was racing one of its drivers.

Pretty sure it was in Mark Hughes book on Hamilton that goes into detail about how it was useful for the team to have that input from Alonso and how it benefitted Lewis etc.

In a sense yes, Ron has natured Lewis, and Alonso had betrayed the team. I do not say they had different equipment, but you can change things with motivation, possibly spend a little more time on strategy with one driver - it still could make a difference - especially as I consider Alonso to be a bit paranoid - he even claimed Renault where favouring the other driver.

So while Max was looking for any way possible to get him Ron stood up and seriously announced to the world's media that his team was racing its own driver. Do you seriously believe that is what he meant?

Plus I ain’t letting him go to McLaren either, anywhere but there.

Wash yr mouth out Mr RG..Macca are a prefect employer...(aw my cheek hurts from this tongue).

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 18:16

Prefer - Kimi, Heidfeld, Glock, Sutil

I like Sutil, but in truth he makes too many mistakes, even last Sunday - he could have been on pole but for a small mistake and again when pitting he lost the back-end - were it not for that he could have jumped Kimi. I am being a bit harsh, but that is why I think Nick would haul the points in.

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 18:16

Ferrari are clearly pushing him out and he has said he will race in F1 next season. McLaren seems to be the best bet for him

Only if they get Alonso - personally I would keep Kimi and hope Felipe is fit enough.

Alonso will either return Ferrari to the Schumacher days or implode th whole thing

I know it's a crazy thought but I could see him giving it another crack at McLaren. Alonso's said he missed the fight with Lewis and it brought the best driving out of them both. I don't think they hate each other at all and do really rate each other. Ron's gone now and the Whitmarsh era is in, I think everyone would be more mature about the situation and that would be one unbreakable driver pairing to beat (good car depending obviously)..

  • Rich16/09/2009 at 18:22

I hated Ferrari in the Schumacher days, but recently I have been more impressed with them. Actually I do not want to see a team employing Alonso to worship the floor he walks on. I have a little hunch, if Felipe really makes a recovery with absolutely no impairment in driving he is going to get under Alonso's skin by still being faster at certain circuits.

I am not so sure it crazy for next year - especially given that Santander is still sponsoring the team.

Alonso may miss the competition now but put him back in that situation again and he will crack again. This is a guy who used to lose the plot when Fisi was faster in practise. If he wants more competition why has he not encouraged Renault to sign someone faster.

All he had to do was go to Flav or Ghosn and say that with a faster team mate he would be faster and more competitive and they would have signed one.

That's what the British press will have you believe but in direct interviews Alonso beats a different drum. He is on record on saying he would like to partner Robert as they are good friends. Also on record saying he enjoyed the racing with Lewis - I think it could still work under Martin's guidance and it would be the team to beat.

    Language lessons going well then {Comment #5}

I managed to (almost) order a meal in Italian on Sunday evening*. Completely pointless since the staff spoke perfect English (on account of the restaurant being in the middle of England), but a lot of fun. And a complete surprise to my parents since the only Italian I've done is reading a bilingual dictionary older than I am and reading/hearing bits of internet F1 chatter.

    * - I missed off the cheese and tomato garlic bread, probably because it was the one item whose name was written in English. My language-mixing skills aren't too great.

One of the hardest things when learning a language for me is that I try not to switch back to English when I should do... It's very normal to, after all!

Had no feelings to Flav until Monaco 2008. They sent out Piquet on tyres not suitable for the conditions, he not surprisingly crashed. They admitted they were testing to see if it could be a strategy for Alonso. Then Flavio publically dumped on PK . After that I disliked the individual as he was setting up his own driver to fail. He is a seriously nasty piece of carbon form - actually an embarassment to all other carbon forms.

    Hmmm I am yet to be convinced by the tshirt/shirt combo… it can work, but you need specialist shirts. {Comment #222}

However it is very useful if your workplace's heater has broken and you still need to look semi-professional.

same! i'm able to drive in loads of different situations now (except with my mum in the car) in my last lesson my instructor asked me to turn round (as if i was on my own having passed my test - so not necessarily a 3 point turn) and to get to the town centre from where i was. He didn't say anything throughout the journey :D twas really fun, he just wanted to see which standard i was at and stuff. i'm really hating being back at school cause it's making having 2 driving lessons a week a problem. just need to pass theory and hopefully i can book my test soon...

For those who want help preparing for a driving test, I spotted something on iTunes when browsing on the iPhone one morning before work. It was an audiobook that you puts you into a state of either hypnotism or meditation and by listening to it, it helps you feel positive and confident you can pass your driving test. I don't know how effective it is since I didn't buy it but I'll look at some reviews of it and see if it's any good.

The CFD drawings have been released for the USF1 car....

Whilst talking about the colour scheme the interviewer asks

"so is that [colour scheme] what we're seeing here?"

Ken Anderson"no, [tries not to laugh under his breath] thats the CFD drawings"

Heheh, that was like the other day when the other car appeared. Was it Malaysia/Lola? Everyone said it was ugly, I'm sure that was because of the CFD colours.

No that malaysia one was in a genuine paint scheme, but i can see how it would be confusing!

Stuff like this doesn't normally get revealed does it? Could be a good sign for getting more access...

Ah right. I didn't look at it for long.

Stuff like this doesn't normally get revealed does it? Could be a good sign for getting more access...

I'm surprised. Why would a team tell the opposition what their car is like? They must have left off any unique parts, which renders the release of the drawings a little pointless..

  • Bassano Clapper16/09/2009 at 22:41

Where are we going and who is attending?

Giggles is up for it, all are welcome

Waterloo is cool or the North Side of the river is fine also - Covent Garden and the like

Lots of Guinness celebrations should be planned, it's Arthur's Day! :D

  • Jon Waldock16/09/2009 at 22:41

I'm surprised. Why would a team tell the opposition what their car is like? They must have left off any unique parts, which renders the release of the drawings a little pointless..

If you look at it, its not hugely different to what we'd expect, it's just a longer F1 car. They havent given their competitors anything....it's purely a "we're still here!!!!!" thing

  • Maverick16/09/2009 at 22:42

Ah right. I didn't look at it for long.

It was painful on the eyes wasn't it.

Evening. I feel like such an old woman....

  • Jon Waldock16/09/2009 at 22:46

Am having a look at various books....i like looking at rubbish books because they make me feel superior they can be funny..

Anywho...just looking at a summary for an F1 book....

"It may be too late for Jenson Button to turn around his poor fortune to become a world beater. That s the view of former Formula 1 driver Derek Daly, who fears the youthful burning hunger to succeed may have passed 28-year-old Button by during his last two tortured years with Honda. Daly, now a respected TV pundit and driver coach, has written a book advocating his pyramid theory for ultimate success."

    It goes on...

"Jenson will have lost the Hamilton/Kubica type of hunger/drive and sometimes it s hard to get that back."

    Oh i love it :D

Here in South Africa we have been experiencing terrible internet access - so it was joked that it would be faster to sent 4 Gigabytes of data using a homing pigeon - it was tested and yes the pigeon was much faster than trying to send the data across the ADSL Internet link run by Telkom.
