Apparently, it is the International Day of Democracy today. I don't really know how you would go about celebrating something like that, but it certainly seems like the FIA should try and do something to observe it. At least then we'd know they understand what democracy is. Anyway, here are some things we're talking about:

  • Multiple shows went up last night, so if you haven't already watched the F1 Debrief live replay, you can now catch up with the edited version. There is also the very concise F1 Digest available for your listening pleasure if you want to relive what happened in the race.
  • Of course the big news of yesterday was the return of Canada to the 2010 calendar. We opened a breakout thread on this subject, but it was also featured in F1 Minute as well. How many different ways are there to write: w00t!
  • As we are now in the countdown to Sidepodradio, and the voicemail is working again, I will plug a little something each day. You can still leave your shout outs to friends, family, messages to drivers (you never know, they might tune in!), birthday wishes, etc, etc. The number is 0121 28 87225, or find us under the username sidepodcast on Skype.

That's all for now. Let us know how you are spending your Tuesday, and whether you are getting up to anything exciting. I will see you in the comments.

Lots to do then, sounds good

Today i have my theory test...

Do many people fail that? In my day we had a few questions on the practical but it was a bit of a token effort. Is it taken seriously?

Do many people fail that? In my day we had a few questions on the practical but it was a bit of a token effort. Is it taken seriously?

Same here, I cannot see how anyone can fail - I've done the sample tests and only got one question wrong and that's because I didn't read it properly.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 23:17

    Bah!

I expect it will sound like that, yes :P

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:17

Maybe it's a secret, government literacy test ;)

I think you just doubled your stay by brining it to a new thread :P

Same here, I cannot see how anyone can fail - I've done the sample tests and only got one question wrong and that's because I didn't read it properly.

It's easily done, some of the questions arent what you'd expect. They often have questions about first aid, evne though that isnt in the Highway code (i think). And the hazard perception is very hit and miss, you click every tme you see a hazard, but theres loads of hazards in each clip, so you just have to be luckt

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:20

I want EVERYONE to play the lieing down game today!!!

5 secs in, he's not annoying in the slightest. Oh no

Shall we see if Bassano still has his - #GP2 tag on..?

    #Bassanos is actually yellow

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:21

    Why not, exactly?

Not wanting to see something that's #confidential!

    Of course, that can't fail!

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 23:21

    #Bassanos is actually yellow

Question to Mr Bassano, did you live coment your date in the end?

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 23:22

    Is that the boat?

#Confidential, they offloaded it and moved it to Holburn (i am yet to be convinced that holburn is an actual place and not a vague idea)... anyway apparently it now has a regular home in temple

  • Pat W14/09/2009 at 23:22

    Evening

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:22

    This is actually true though

    Plus, I can tell when you're mis-tagging

I caught Lukeh on Saturday ;)

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 23:22

    Why not, exactly?

It worked for Mr C and Alex? #Confidential

    ooooh nooo, i mean #GP2 not #Bassano

  • Pat W14/09/2009 at 23:23

Do many people fail that? In my day we had a few questions on the practical but it was a bit of a token effort. Is it taken seriously?

When I took it you had to pass 30 out of 35 and the questions were fairly easy. They've toughened it up a little bit since.

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:24

Question to Mr Bassano, did you live coment your date in the end?

    No :)

And Alex's suggestion that I explain how I fill my days by taking blind installation requests over the internet with the aid of an Orange Drill never got a look in

I do like "Mr Bassano" though :)

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 23:25

When I took it you had to pass 30 out of 35 and the questions were fairly easy. They've toughened it up a little bit since.

Now its 43 out of 50 i believe, but theres some questions that arent in the high way code, that are more ones you have to interpret

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:25

    ooooh nooo, i mean #GP2 not #Bassano

That still would've worked, if you weren't mis-leading me ;)

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 23:25

    No :)

    Yeyyy!!

And Alex's suggestion that I explain how I fill my days by taking blind installation requests over the internet with the aid of an Orange Drill never got a look in

    Wow! It did go well!

  • startledbunny14/09/2009 at 23:25

  • Bassano Clapper14/09/2009 at 23:26

#Confidential, they offloaded it and moved it to Holburn (i am yet to be convinced that holburn is an actual place and not a vague idea)... anyway apparently it now has a regular home in temple

If it has a train or tube station, then it's a place

Apart from Cockfosters, that's just fields

  • Pat W14/09/2009 at 23:26

Now its 43 out of 50 i believe, but theres some questions that arent in the high way code, that are more ones you have to interpret

For some of us the Highway Code is just a suggestion. Who wants a lift to Spa? ;-)

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 23:26

That still would've worked, if you weren't mis-leading me ;)

Im not sure that my convincing skills are good enough to convince you that you are yellow ;)

Apparently, Holborn was referenced as far back as 959AD, which - in my eyes - qualifies it as "a place"

Place names and boundaries are often hard to quantify in London due to it's ever expanding nature.

Estate agents don't help by introducing terms such as triangle & village when they don't belong

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:26

Meh, its just an idea, not a place :P

So I hear, why is on a Monday?

  • Journeyer15/09/2009 at 00:28

So I hear, why is on a Monday?

Same reason as Wimbledon before - rain delays.

    delPo upsets Fed in 5!

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:28

So I hear, why is on a Monday?

Apparently it rained and they didnt have enough umbrellas!

Del Potro won... which is interesting, he is only 20

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 00:29

Same reason as Wimbledon before - rain delays.

    US Open?

    Where's it held?

[Now Wilmbles can get smug about it's fancy roof]

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:29

Del Potro won... which is interesting, he is only 20

Cliche climbing into the crowd looses him respect though...

Aye, Queens, New York City, it seems

How long before they get a remote controlled roof then? ;)

  • Alison15/09/2009 at 00:37

Okaaay. Down i go again. Wish me luck!

  • Bassano Clapper15/09/2009 at 00:38

I always assumed the US open was indoors, probably because of the hard courts

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:38

How long before they get a remote controlled roof then? ;)

I dont see why they dont just get one built like a big zepplin and fly it around to all the tennis venues :D

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:38

Okaaay. Down i go again. Wish me luck!

Tap it with a spoon 7 times as well ;)

    Steven steven steven steven ...

    :)

Do you think he set it up to catch "Stephen" as well?

  • Alianora La Canta15/09/2009 at 00:46

I did something a bit dumb yesterday evening. I'm doing a course in medical/legal word processing/audiotyping two evenings per week and I thought it started yesterday.

I got to the reception and after lots of waiting was told to go up four flights up some stairs to get to what they thought was the classroom. It took two more trips up and down those stairs and over an hour of waiting and asking various people before I found out two key things:

    1) Reception was right about it being the right classroom

    2) They neglected to inform me that I'd got the wrong start date and the first class is not for another two weeks.

    Oops...

  • Steven Roy15/09/2009 at 00:47

Nick has a Dragon's Den idea, it may be a little costly

I like the idea. I can see it is going to be a little complicated to do. Apart from anything else these tournaments are not just played on 1 or 2 courts. They have 20 ish courts

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:47

    Further Times stories

    Breakout thread?!

    ...wait a minute :P

  • Steven Roy15/09/2009 at 00:47

    Head ping

    Head ping absolutely

  • Nikki15/09/2009 at 00:47

Do you think he set it up to catch "Stephen" as well?

That would be prudent. I used to call Steven "Stephen". :D

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 00:48

I like the idea. I can see it is going to be a little complicated to do. Apart from anything else these tournaments are not just played on 1 or 2 courts. They have 20 ish courts

It only has to cover one, so long as we have something to show on tv.

The only downside would be that rain often comes with high wind so there would need to be an incredibly effective anchoring system..

  • Steven Roy15/09/2009 at 00:49

Maybe he has an auto RSS ping thing set up so that whenever anyone says "Steven" in the comments his pager vibrates.

Alex has had me fitted with a head ping. If you shout my name it goes off

  • Steven Roy15/09/2009 at 00:50

Do you think he set it up to catch "Stephen" as well?

Why is Filipino not spelt with a 'Ph'?

The Spanish, of course. It was originally spelled Filipinas, in honor of King Felipe. The Americans come over and Americanize everything. Felipe in English is Philip, so Filipinas became the Philippine Islands. We'd drop the word Islands later, but the country name change was done.

For some reason, that didn't translate to the people. It stayed Filipinos. In the local dialect, it's Pilipino.

Funny. one section of Ontario, the Province of Canada where I am currently stationed, has 30 000 islands along the eastern shore of one bay and 1 000 more islands along a river. 31 000 Islands, and I am supposedly in the middle of my country.....

A number of years ago I was in Stanley Park in Vancouver, waiting for some friends to show up, I decided to go see what was going on where a bunch of people were and it turned out they were watching cricket so I sat down and started to watch and I tell you that is a 1/2 hour I will never see again, I'm glad I didn't have a knife or i'd have probably slashed my wrists.

My dislike of Murray isn't exactly news.

I like Federer, he's my favourite player, but he's got 15 slams. It's nice to see some new people win. I lost $20 on it and I didn't even mind because Delpo is lovely.

    Q. You earned a lot of money today. How are you gonna use this? Are you gonna buy something to treat yourself?

I was on an electronics course, and the tutor was on holiday, so we had a week learning PASCAL. This is 1990 when this happened. Oh god that's almost 20 years ago. :(

    oooooh. understood.

indeed it doesn't. but if that's true, interesting that the moment they begin to share setups again, jenson gets back on form (albeit still behind barrichello).

Oh well I graduate on Thursday and then start another course to better my degree,

I've strangely been receiving emails from an individual wanting to write for my blog recently.

Thing is, I don't have the heart to tell him he's completely missed what my blog is about. He's suggest writing articles about Brawn etc.

Bad research, poor first impression and emails riddled with mistakes... but I can't knock him for trying.

on the desktop it's blimmin' awful. just look at f1 live timing for an example. but running on a server where no-one can see it, it's better than php and python, which are the two other languages SPC is currently built upon.

Java on server good on desktop bad - agree.

Nigella seems to have figured out something - a lot of people don't watch the cooking shows to learn how to cook. They watch to watch other people cook. For some, it's nothing more than a stimulating sensory experience.

Other key things to point out - Todt's cabinet has Craw (ACC-US) AND Boeri (ACM-Monaco) on it.

And Morrie Chandler of New Zealand, he (does or did?) head the rallying side of things.

Then there's Mohamed ben Sulayem who crashed the Renault in Dubai earlier this year - he's quite powerful in the region isn't he?

On the sporting side it doesn't look good for Ari. I know nothing of the other parts.

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 13:48

nope. they're people who need the cash. COBOL knowledge gets big salaries here.

I did a course a decade ago (ouch) learning first Pascal and then COBOL. We complained vehemently that we should be learning a variant of C like all the other colleges..

I should have stuck with it and moved to Manila.. Unfortunately it was far too boring to learn so I never got the hang of it. :-)

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 13:49

Damn, I knew I should have learnt COBOL instead of PASCAL. Grrrr

well, i was looking into making commenting crash less and moving from mediatemple. but for some reason the web site has gotten faster again today after a very poor three or four weeks.

i don't know what they changed, but i haven't touched a thing. back to the homepage then!

  • Christine15/09/2009 at 14:54

well i've seen some plugging in my time...

I am commenting on the train. I accidentally shook my iPhone which prompted it to ask me if I meant to undo (that's the gesture).

I tapped what I thought was the submit button but was now the confirm undo button and the train moved and I undid and submitted!

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 18:00

Been watching back the live show from Sunday here on the train. Notice that Christine changed clothes during the day.

Now in my case that would mean I had spilled something on myself. But I can't believe that from Christine!

    Did that work?

    Not at all :(

  • Rich15/09/2009 at 18:30

Apparently Barrichello’s side stopped sharing data after Germany up until just recently. Though if the pair are now fighting for the title (seeing as Red Bull are more or less out of the running), you’d think they’d not share setups now?

The implication that interests me, is what happens if they do not renew Rubens' contract? Seems to me that he is rather valuable to the team. It is common knowledge that Jenson uses a lot of information of Rubens setup.

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 18:31

i'll find a link. in short a new webservice was released a week or two ago, that tracks the location of every container ship on the planet, and a couple of savvy people noticed there was a rather large number located off of some remote island, so went to check it out.

apparently ships have been "hidden" out of sight because they have no work and nobody wants to admit they've bought far too many of the damn things.

Gavin, are you around Friday night? I was wondering if you fancied a runthrough of the show on Skype (with me via iPhone :P ).

  • lou15/09/2009 at 20:31

I just discovered the ctrl + pgup/pg down, its great with this keyboard

    Works on chrome and Firefox...

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 20:32

it would be really nice when sidepodradio is done and dusted, if i could maybe have christine back for a bit. you'd think i'd married a set of headphones

Awww... maybe you need to engineer a direct line into them ;) hehe

Both. Don't mind, I assume at this late notice, the wiki would be better

OK people time for a quick push to help RG. Go to http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/The+Nostradamus+Effect and give him something to predict. Once you have left a message on the wiki you could leave your prediction request on skype so that it can be edited into the show.

a box of chicken?... any reason?

Because I noticed it on our delivery cage, as we started selling it again in our shop with the new stock, and I was happy to see it back in stock! Someone said it looked like I was hugging it so I did. A reunion perhaps. It's really yummy food to be fair!

I thought you were too busy being productive to notice

i've not been idle. i have a demo of pubsubhubbub working. if you go here:

    http://friendfeed.com/sidepodcastlive

all comments should now be syndicated live to friendfeed as well as spc. it's not perfect - permalinks don't work, blockquotes have to be replaced with little > signs, and some comments get missed completely, but it does at least have potential.

you might find some comments appear over there faster than here and this is the model that real-time commenting will be built upon. the geeky aspect of it is that it's all built on the standard RSS comment feed and google.

also you can't reply over there either, it's a one-way thing.

memcached ideally. but the weight of the page also has to be small. doohickey just keeps getting bigger.

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 21:09

    It was Alex.

    What? Did I? I don't think so

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 21:12

memcached ideally. but the weight of the page also has to be small. doohickey just keeps getting bigger.

When you ask if there are more comments how does that work? Do you do a double request... Are there more comments? Yes there are more get them?

  • Nick15/09/2009 at 21:12

I have totaly fallen in love with this site... but i just had to share this gem

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 21:13

memcached ideally. but the weight of the page also has to be small. doohickey just keeps getting bigger.

Without making it too insane... Could you put a timer in that lasts 5 seconds and then says... right now I'll load the doohicky code?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)15/09/2009 at 21:13

I have totaly fallen in love with this site... but i just had to share this gem

That site is fantastic - be warned, that is the only SFW pic though!

  • me15/09/2009 at 21:13

When you ask if there are more comments how does that work? Do you do a double request... Are there more comments? Yes there are more get them?

i would probably cache the latest 20 comments in an array, and then select from the array each time, rather than the database. reset the list of 20 with each new comment.

am only guessing though, haven't got that far yet and mediatemple doesn't even have memcached as an option.

  • me15/09/2009 at 21:14

Without making it too insane... Could you put a timer in that lasts 5 seconds and then says... right now I'll load the doohicky code?

could do, that'll delay the loading of doohickey by five seconds. so load homepage and wait... or load doohickey.

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 21:15

i would probably cache the latest 20 comments in an array, and then select from the array each time, rather than the database. reset the list of 20 with each new comment.

That's the thing... What we do in a system I manage is we only let everyone look at the cache. Then every x seconds we force clear the cache first user gets the load of the refresh everyone else sees the cache whenever they request.

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 21:16

could do, that'll delay the loading of doohickey by five seconds. so load homepage and wait... or load doohickey.

That's what I was thinking... Plus my guess is a percentage of traffic is hits from non javascript running bots and stuff.

  • me15/09/2009 at 21:18

this hasn't come across as well as i'd hoped:

it's supposed to be demonstrating how we can now get new comment alerts inside of an instant messenger chat window. in theory the window could be any type of client - desktop doohickey, android/iphone app etc. still someway off but it is working in principle.

    [download for a better view]

  • me15/09/2009 at 21:20

That's the thing... What we do in a system I manage is we only let everyone look at the cache. Then every x seconds we force clear the cache first user gets the load of the refresh everyone else sees the cache whenever they request.

that would save us a huge amount to database loading problems. however, it does require the complete removal of wordpress.

    have i mentioned i'm not a fan?

  • Alex Andronov15/09/2009 at 21:20

    have i mentioned i'm not a fan?

  • me15/09/2009 at 21:22

the database is actually being killed by people f5ing on ye olde comments.

    lclt/doohickey causes almost no pain.

wordpress does 25+ database "select * from..." queries per reload. it's utter nonsense.

Right, I'm absolutely cream-crackered as I have spent all evening writing the Driver Consistency post for the Italian Grand Prix - but it's worth a read because as a bonus I compared Barrichello and Kovalainen's laptimes, analysed the championship standings (and what each driver has to do to win), and then looked at what would have happened if we used a medals system.

Hope you like it - and please leave comments!

Hi there. Penguins ... at West Edmonton Mall they walk the penguins in the mall for exercise.

Awesome... Are you tempted to go and chase them?

Will read tomorrow as I'm quite tired having spent the last 90 mins editing my notes on the European Grand Prix and working out which parts of the unnecessary HTML header Open Office tables produces I can remove so as to not break my formatting...

Can anyone find me a clip of the feature BBC did on the Brawn and Red Bull strengths and weaknesses during the F1 coverage a couple of races back?

Have you heard about the head tracking in GT5? You look to your mirrors and the view changes, look down at the dash and the screen moves to that...

might have to buy a PSeye :D

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 22:41

They should lose their track licence for this!

I was expecting to see a tyre barrier at the end of the gravel trap, I can't believe the car carried on!

  • Pat W15/09/2009 at 22:42

Have you heard about the head tracking in GT5? You look to your mirrors and the view changes, look down at the dash and the screen moves to that...

But if you move your head down you won't be looking at the screen any more, unless your head looks down and your eyes are at the top of your head

  • Nikki15/09/2009 at 22:42

No kidding! I certainly wasn't expecting track again.

I did see that. I thought the black stuff was a tyre wall, then we he was across the other side of the track I thought he'd vaulted it, but when I saw the other angle I was surprised there wasn't one!

  • Nikki15/09/2009 at 22:45

This one's for Christine, and totally unrelated, but I had to share it 'cause it's Too. Cute.:

    Guys,

This is unbelievable how bad the safety standards are - we are in 2009 for Pete's sake!

They should lose their track licence for this!

That is utterley ridiculous. Whoever licensed that circuit for that class should be banned from licensing cicuits as they are clueless.

It was supposed to hold some pre-season testing a few years ago. It hodls the Moto GP race.

That was insane, i agree completly. The Authorities should lock that place up.

Dont the Moto GP guys go there soon?

has there even been an investigation launched?

    Some people are only programmed to answer the question they are asked and not add any relevant info {Comment #117}

True, and I will admit it didn't occur to me until late on that I'd got the wrong start date (after all, most other courses appeared to start that week). However, this does not explain why the several members of staff who (at different times) wondered out loud what I was doing hovering around a deserted room after evening lessons were due to start didn't think of the idea - especially as most of them were from the department in question and the people who eventually told me what had happened didn't even know what my course was until the second time I re-phrased the question.

I can sort of see why reception didn't inform me I'd got the wrong start date. Discovering that most of the department staff didn't know either was a little disconcerting.

  • Alianora La Canta15/09/2009 at 22:57

    Doh!

    Lesson 1) RTFQ (or the appointment card ;) ) {Comment #121}

If the appointment card had featured this particular item of information, it would have helped. Instead it was blank, so I assumed that due to most of the other courses starting this week that mine would too.

I have long since learned that phoning up to find out stuff (as opposed to going through the college support network, which has yet to be set up for this academic year) is completely pointless.

(In case you're wondering, another college provider is available except that I've found it to be about ten times worse).

    I tweeted this earlier:

@bassanoclapper Wants the UN to make a resolution to ban the use of “gate” in relation to all scandal discussions. Sloppy journalism is to blame

    It’s really getting on my wick! Grrrrrrr! {Comment #154}

I've taken to calling the Singapore 2008 stuff the "Nelsinho Defence" scandal. I object to naming it after a label that's been recycled from three years ago and completely misses why Watergate is called Watergate...

It used to annoy me too... but its sort of become a meme now which amuses me... Its sort of a journalistic joke

    Q. You earned a lot of money today. How are you gonna use this? Are you gonna buy something to treat yourself?

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO: No, maybe cheesecake for my birthday.

    Lovely. {Comment #279}

Juan Martin has the same taste in puddings as me and I also like his low-key but tasty way of celebrating :D

    Evening folks

I've taken to calling the Singapore 2008 stuff the "Nelsinho Defence" scandal. I object to naming it after a label that's been recycled from three years ago and completely misses why Watergate is called Watergate...

I prefer that, some thought has gone into it at least.

Recycled from 3 years ago? The gutter press have been using the term since Diana was causing scandals with her pen pals, if not before

I think that was meant to be 33 years since Watergate was in 1976

I meant "crashgate" was recycled from 3 years ago. The suffix has been recycled since Watergate!
