With the race weekend out the way, we are now starting to realise that Sidepodradio is only week away. Argh! In the true spirit of Sidepodcast, we will bury our heads in the sand, and reminisce about the weekend that was:

  • Barrichello took his second win of the year, then. You can hear about the brief details in yesterday's F1 Minute, catch up with the live show replay, or wait for F1 Digest later today. We spoil you with options, we really do!
  • Whilst we're on a plugging trip, you really must check out the Parade Lap if you weren't able to join us live. Alex made a special effort as it is the last one for a while, and there's an added bonus of church bells and a special surprise right at the end.
  • Yesterday, Scott wrote a post about Fisichella's move to Ferrari - and whether it really was a dream or turning into a bit of a nightmare. Some interesting thoughts in there, why not add your own?

That'll do it for now. I'll be spending my Monday evening editing several shows, what will you be doing? Let us know, and I'll see you in the comments.

Mr C, just listened to the live debrief and I'm sorry but I don't think I have it wrong when it comes to fantasy racers :P

Ahh i love diet coke first thing in the morning... really gets you going, but you cant combine it with chocolate as you really will get sick

You were going to the movies on no sleep?

Isnt there a bit of a risk you might doze off?

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 00:11

    Hello all.

hey there joe, all a bit quiet tonight, i am heading off in 10 or so.

    Did you catch the race?

  • Joe in Fla14/09/2009 at 00:12

    Did you catch the race?

I did. Sad to see Tonio out early. Glad to see Kimi on podium, and I think it's against a commandment to be upset about Ruebens winning a race.

I am reading an article on tonio at the moment in gp+

Was nice to see rubens win, it might have been just me but it didnt seem anywhere near as emotional as his last win which i guess is understandable

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 00:15

Back to bed, i had to leap out in a cold sweat of fear as i had forgotten to do some banking ;)

Yeah, hopefully he's getting used to it. Tonio is still a good friend of Scott Speed. Speed said in an interveiw that he would never watch F1 unless Tonio was in the race. I guess we all watched today

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 00:17

ah yes when i planned the movie trip i didnt realise i would only get 2 hours sleep the night before. I fall asleep in movies even with a full 8 hours behind me so might have to wait til next weekend.

Coke is good for settling the stomach so that is not the problem. Probably lack of sleep and caffeine

Bed is for wimps. Real men drink beer and "livedoohickey" until their typing is unintelligible. (I had to retype that twice)

This wimp is going to bed to watch the Bears and the Packers. For reasons beyond human comprehension I can see channel five in my bedroom TV butnot my main TV despite them both being fed from the same signal.

Been there, a few weekends at F1 races where I was drinking beer for breakfast to cure the night before. Enjoy! I'll probably only go a little while longer, I have to take my truck into the shop tommorrow and I plan on running home, since I didn't run yesterday

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 01:13

Argh iplayer fail!! I started watching the repeat of today's race so I could see the start and realised that it was Spa they were showing. I only noticed when I heard this gem from Legard "Fisichella's in the lead first!"

    Morning, everyone.

I see Kimi's being lured by McLaren and Brawn. If it boils down to one of the two, he's more likely to end up at McLaren, I think. Ross has 4 drivers and 2 seats! (He can't just shun Rubens away - he might win the whole shebang!)

Very true. Does that also mean he won't be the favourite because he is Finnish?

It does sound like an interesting combination...

    My thoughts exactly.

Kimi would not return to the same company. Ron is not there…

That's the main point, isn't it? Everyone who's had issues at McLaren have usually had them because of Ron.

That said, if you ask me, I still think Kimi's gonna be rallying next year. But it looks like all the evidence is starting to point to him driving for a different F1 team...

to be fair to him, he is doing fairly good job at the moment ... if he becomes available he will sure find good drive somewhere. and his best for new team comes in his first season :-)

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 07:15

interesting how Joe Saward begins the Monza issue of GP+ mag saying he does want to talk much about Flavio and Piquet only to post long article on the same topic on pages 13 to 19 later :-)

looks like he made up his mind about who is guilty:

I will be off to Paris next week and will be waiting outside the FIA building in the Place de la Concorde to say goodbye to Flavio. I will nod farewell and will be happy to see the back of him. The sport needs more Monzas and fewer Flavios.

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 07:15

Next question - when will Ferrari finally announce Alonso for 2010? Will they do it in Singapore, once the hearing is done? Or will we have to wait until the season ends?

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 07:18

If I were Ferrari I would start wondering if I want to risk my luck by hiring the driver who was there when McLaren got 100 mil fine, who was there when Renault got in trouble ... This guy is great driver but somehow attracts trouble ...

Ferrari will take the risk. If there's one team that has a Teflon coating against such trouble (for all the right or wrong reasons), it's Ferrari.

OK iTouch question here - has anyone had problems connecting to wi-fi hotspots that require a webpage to logon since updating to 3.0?

Basically after it saves your details, on subsequent logons it will just stay on the connecting screen. If I wait a moment, turn off the wi-fi and turn it on again, it works fine.

I have tried restoring the iPod but it does not work. Any ideas how to fix this?

Hmm... I googled it the other day but I could not find a similar problem... Home wifi works great though...

What about this article.... Says you can turn part of it off:

Thank you - auto join was turned off, but with it turned on or off I get the same problem. I open Safari after connecting to the hotspot and then when I try to load a page, instead of redirecting to TDC I get a black screen, a connecting message and a roundrel circling into infinity...

A: Yes, but don't feel bad for Brian.

I am surprisingly awake considering I had 2 hours sleep and I stopped after the 2 coffees and 1 coke. I did spend all day eating a bag of apple chips though, and whilst 99% fat free, they're pretty much 100% sugar :D

This is RE flav blocking Kubica. I cant see renault being around next year though, I have a theory as to why they are backing Flav, which made no sense to me.

Give him 100% support untill he is found guilty then sue him massivly?

Poor Girl (the Singer...). Did you see that Beyonce called her up to the stage later to finish her speech?

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 09:36

Perhaps he was worried that Serena was going to be keeping the Rudest of all time award?

On my tennis forum someone was joking that he was on his way to New York to take Kim's trophy and give it to Serena.

No offense to you, Kim, and I'm gonna let you finish playing, but Serena Williams is one of the greatest players of all time. ONE OF THE GREATEST. I'm just saying.

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 09:37

Um, hi Martin, I love you when you talk about Heikki.

    Q. Has he blown his chance to stay here next year?

MW: No, of course he hasn't. We take a longer term view of his performance and his contribution to the team, and he is a great team player and a great asset to this team. At the end of the day, the most difficult thing is to find drivers who are quick, and he is quick, he is technically good. He has lifted his game today and maybe we contributed to that with the wrong tyre choice.

    Q. With the complications in the driver market, and Kimi weighing up options here and at Brawn GP, is there a chance your drivers will not be sorted out until the winter?

MW: No, I suspect they will be sorted out in the next few weeks. That is our inclination.

    The sooner the better please.

What happened with Kovy's tyres? Was he on a different set to Hamilton and the Brawns?

It was odd how he faded away yesterday...

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 09:42

What happened with Kovy's tyres? Was he on a different set to Hamilton and the Brawns?

Lewis went Op-Pr-Pr, Heikki went Pr-Op so they started on different tyres. Don't have a clue what the Brawns went with though.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 09:43

What happened with Kovy's tyres? Was he on a different set to Hamilton and the Brawns?

Maybe it was a bad batch?

In GP+ They said Liuzzi apparently had a set which just wouldnt take heat...

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 09:44

Lewis went Op-Pr-Pr, Heikki went Pr-Op so they started on different tyres. Don't have a clue what the Brawns went with though.

    JB went Op-Pr

    RB went Pr-Op

(assuming the Op was the soft one )

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 09:45

The latest word is that Williams is now looking closely at a deal with Cosworth as it does not wish to be dictated to by any engine manufacturer.

Looking at it from a purely logical point of view - the last time they were on Cossies (2006), they had their worst season for nearly 3 decades. What will make a reunion with Cosworth (who are just running an evolution of those same 2006 motors) any different?

Are Williams thinking here with their heart instead of their head?

Give him 100% support untill he is found guilty then sue him massivly?

Even if that's the case, Ghosn is unneccessarily putting his job at risk. This is just F1, after all.

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 09:46

(assuming the Op was the soft one )

I get so confused by that. I get my softs, my super softs, my mediums, my hards, but I never remember which is the prime and which is the option.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/09/2009 at 09:46

Lewis went Op-Pr-Pr, Heikki went Pr-Op so they started on different tyres. Don't have a clue what the Brawns went with though.

So they are blaming the tyres, but Rubens had the same and won (and no KERS)? There must be more to it...

I get so confused by that. I get my softs, my super softs, my mediums, my hards, but I never remember which is the prime and which is the option.

the one that is not option is always the prime. the one that is not prime is always the option. does this help ?

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 09:47

So they are blaming the tyres, but Rubens had the same and won (and no KERS)? There must be more to it...

    blame KERS then :-)

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 09:48

So they are blaming the tyres, but Rubens had the same and won (and no KERS)? There must be more to it...

Martin says "We may have made a mistake as a team as we had him on the prime tyre. He had no grip and was struggling. In hindsight, we probably should have started on the option tyre, so that contributed to it. "

and I translate that as "Heikki is awesome and lost solely because of us" ;)

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 09:48

I get so confused by that. I get my softs, my super softs, my mediums, my hards, but I never remember which is the prime and which is the option.

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 09:51

and I translate that as "Heikki is awesome and lost solely because of us"

I translate that: "In McLaren we do not blame our drivers before we fire them, unless their name is Fernando of course"

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 09:52

The battle to be a Force India test driver is apparently heating up! :D

Its going to look real silly if either of them get a proper race drive at another team...

  • Paul14/09/2009 at 09:52

from that I will take that everyone who passed him was on softs except for Rubens and he doesn't count because he's awesome regardless of his tyres ;)

Surely the driver has some input here.

Heikki just hasn't shown the determination of Lewis.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/09/2009 at 09:52

The thing with Hekki this year is he has put some really good performances when his car hasn't had updates on it that Lewis' does, clearly they need to take something off Hekki's car :D

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 09:57

Aren't the Ferrari engines less fuel efficient? I seem to remember being told that at some point this year.

I think that Spa was the perfect example how fuel efficient Mercedes engine is. Ferrari will need to do something about that, otherwise they will pay really heavy (literally) price next year

  • Paul14/09/2009 at 09:58

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 09:59

That's really true. However, it could be good for him - look how long they kept DC

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 10:00

Ferrari cars stopped one lap earlier than the fuel figures predict, so I agree they are more thirsty...

... and I believe Fisi went further then predicted (and that time he was still powered by Mercedes)

  • James14/09/2009 at 10:00

Ferrari cars stopped one lap earlier than the fuel figures predict, so I agree they are more thirsty...

I think it was mentioned in Spain where Massa was being chased down by Vettel. They didn't think he would have enough fuel if he kept pushing as hard as he was, in the end he had to slow down to make to the end of the race.

  • F1Wolf14/09/2009 at 10:01

well nobody knows in F1, first it was 5 year freeze, then 10 years or vice versa :-) now they are talking about brand new power train from 2013 so that is probably the end of the engines as we know them these days

  • Christine14/09/2009 at 10:06

I reckon Geoff Willis' departure might have come back to bite them on the bum.

So was he driving the development engineering? RBR just seem to have stopped still. Not a good sign for next year

  • James14/09/2009 at 10:13

    Speaking of engines...

Q: We have seen a very strong performance from the Mercedes engine, and a lack of performance from the Toyota engines. Would you say it’s about time to again do some sort of ‘de-freeze’ like previously happened for Renault?

SD: This is for sure something that we will be discussing in the engine working group because today we have seen a really great performance from the Mercedes engine and before we make a final decision we have to see the numbers connected to that. It is a point that is on the table to discuss among the teams, as it is something that we need to understand.

    So engines are Toyota's downfall...

I always saw him as the counterbalance against Adrian Newey's aggressive designs. As a duo, they've done very well - especially during their time at Williams.

Now with Willis gone, Newey might've started to become over-aggressive with the car's development, risking their reliability and harming them as a result.

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 10:16

Yeah, good point. I think that's how he went at McLaren, with the ill-fatred MP4/18

  • me14/09/2009 at 10:18

The latest word is that Williams is now looking closely at a deal with Cosworth as it does not wish to be dictated to by any engine manufacturer.

    that is absurd.

williams want mercedes, i'm sure. and now maybe they think renault might not be around.

but there is no way williams are choosing cossy because "it does not wish to be dictated to". frank slated them before christmas, said he didn't like them when he last had them.

  • Paul14/09/2009 at 10:20

but there is no way williams are choosing cossy because "it does not wish to be dictated to". frank slated them before christmas, said he didn't like them when he last had them.

I have not seen any evidence of Mercedes dictating to anyone.

Williams may have lost the race for a Merc however.

but there is no way williams are choosing cossy because "it does not wish to be dictated to". frank slated them before christmas, said he didn't like them when he last had them.

I think he is still annoyed about the whole Nakajima thing, he wants Kubica for next year, and if he has to go to Cosworth to get him then thats what he has to do, and hope he can pick up the spare Mercedees deal.

BTW joe speculates Mclaren could be on the way to using their own engines....

  • me14/09/2009 at 10:21

and that's fair enough. but cossy are with very definition of sloppy seconds, if there ever was one.

  • Paul14/09/2009 at 10:21

and that's fair enough. but cossy are with very definition of sloppy seconds, if there ever was one.

Maybe that's why they are still not ruling out KERS for next year

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 10:22

Renault, were saying he couldnt have their engines if they signed up Kubica ahead of them...

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 10:24

Williams may have lost the race for a Merc however.

It depends on what Red Bull decide to do. JA indicates that the only thing stopping an RBR-Merc now is approval from the FIA and McLaren. If they don't approve of it, what chance will Williams get that a Williams-Merc would be approved?

Williams have to start looking somewhere else. If Renault pulls out, they'll be left with Toyota, Cosworth, or Ferrari.

  • Paul14/09/2009 at 10:24

Renault, were saying he couldnt have their engines if they signed up Kubica ahead of them...

Can they do that? I thought there was some rule that engine supliers were required to supply engines at a reasonable price. Surely that could only dictate terms if they were giving them away.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 10:25

With the MP4-12C out now, it's a matter of when rather than if, really, I think.

Just about. It looks like the car got ever-so-slightly unsettled by taking too much of the kerb at Lesmo 1. As a result, he drifted out wider than he did on the previous lap, and made the ever-so-slight contact with the gravel, causing him to spin.

I'd pack up and go home if I couldn't have either. Cosworth is likely to be woeful, Toyota is apparently pants as well which leaves Ferrari - which Newey isn't fond of.

  • Alianora La Canta14/09/2009 at 11:00

I thought that changed when max altered the engine rules?

    Didint Force india have a lot of debt to ferrari? {Comment #134}

Ferrari had three different engines homologated due to their supply arrangements at the time of homologation. Therefore they were able to keep the best of those engines for themselves and give the lesser ones to their customer teams. The only reason Toro Rosso got the middle one of the three engines was because they did a mid-season chassis redesign that, among other things, accomodated it. Force India didn't have that option because it was conserving resources for 2009 - a decision that paid off in the long term but forced them to use the worst of the three engines Ferrari had homologated.

The debt to Ferrari must have dated from after this started because Ferrari have in the past withdrawn an engine supply for one season when a team has had debts from the preceding season. According to F1 Magazine (February 2002 edition), in 2001, they issued an ultimatum to Prost that they would only continue to supply engines to them if they paid 2002 and €10m of 2003's supply because Prost still owed a lot of money from 2001's supply and Ferrari wanted to know that the rest of the contract would be respected.

Max has wanted that rule imposed for years, but he's never managed to get it written into the Technical or Sporting Regulations (the requirement for tyre manufacturers to supply teams at commercial costs or below was inscribed in the Sporting Regulations in the days of tyre wars). It may be that such a stipulation features in the new Concorde Agreement.

I like that he was still trying. That's a lot of what I like about Vettel as well. He won't stop chasing toward the end of the race (even if we all know he won't get past, and he's trashing his engine.....) :P

    Also good afternoon!

  • Alianora La Canta14/09/2009 at 11:22

    I can’t see McLaren being too forthcoming in allowing Mercedes-Benz the opportunity to supply Red Bull with their engines. I don’t think the FIA really care to be honest. {Comment #250}

The FIA might, since its leader Max Mosley seems to want independent engine suppliers (read Cosworth) to predominate now irrespective of the cost.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 11:24

I am glad he is adopting the Ricky Bobby mantra considering he has nothing to lose. Good on him for racing all the way!

Its easy to say that now, but if he was driving around with that attitusde on the last lap he could have taken out Jenson.

If that had happened the whole internet would be taking about how his ego couldnt take jenson's success...

  • startledbunny14/09/2009 at 11:24

Mr & Mrs C, I've finished the Travels In Sidepodland segment.

    Just uploading it now.

I'll send you the link, and Nikki too. I think she was ultra busy this weekend though.

I haven't got Steven's voicemail though. Did he send one? The wiki says so. I don't want to miss anyone out.

  • Alianora La Canta14/09/2009 at 11:24

    can they pull out of the force india deal? {Comment #251}

If the rumours that Force India hasn't been paying its bills is true, then possibly.

Otherwise, Mercedes can't pull out because there's four years of contract left to go. I still think that the rumours of the Mercedes debt is more likely to be the team doing its regular trick of paying at the last possible moment rather than an actual inability to pay.

  • Christine14/09/2009 at 11:27

I haven't got Steven's voicemail though. Did he send one? The wiki says so. I don't want to miss anyone out.

Hmm. I have been sending all the files to Nikki?

  • RCC14/09/2009 at 11:28

on italian tv he made a quote like “if you are racing for the championship, mistakes like that are really bad”. emphasis on the word IF. he felt bad for the team though – points for constructor would still have been appreciated.

I felt terrible for the team, all that way and coming home empty handed..well 1 point if you count Slowvalainen's performance.

I really enjoyed yesterday's race, not the result I wanted but a good one to watch. The pitstops were really interesting yesterday and defo a welcome addition (IMO). Gutted for Luizzi but heigh ho.

Thinking about it now i wonder how much he had other things on his mind…

Why on earth would he dump Nicole, she's hot!

  • Alianora La Canta14/09/2009 at 11:28

    I plan to something similar at the end of season, if that’s ok with you? {Comment #267}

Absolutely. It's entirely possible you could see something I've missed and besides, I don't own the internet ;)

i liked aspects of the race but was almost falling asleep at a few points. the simultanteous pit stop stuff ups were interesting, even if the coverage wasnt too good of them. i was struggling to grasp what was happening.

we have talked before about coverage of us car sports - i would love to see when a car is coming out of the pits - labels on the cars coming down the straight to say who was who. it really would not be hard. cmon bernie!

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 11:32

    But he wouldn't have.

He was only 2 secconds behind, if he had locked up on the way into a chicane instead of loosing it on the way out of a corner, it could easily have happened.

I am all for drivivers pushing the limit. but I think lewis had a failiure of common sense on that last lap.

There were 2 guys fighiting for the championship, he didnt need to get involved, and he was lucky he didnt

It was the last lap. As i see it he wasnt racing, he lost his head

    He wasn't racing? what?!!!

The race was 53 laps not 52, I see why you're saying he should turn down and cruise to the end but that's not racing really is it? His team are desperate for the points, he was reeling Jenson in and on that last lap and there was traffic up ahead. I'd be riled if my driver just accepted where they were and trundled around to collect the points.

What point should a driver give up then?

What point should a driver give up then?

I am not saying he should get up... I understand people see drivers as beyond criticism and whatnot so i will quietly back away from this agreeing to disagree as it is a never ending argument.

I dont think he should have backed away, but i belive his emotions got the better of him and he wasnt pushing for a logical reasons. His lack of regret at the end of the race would seem to back this theory up.

I like the guy i really do, but he does tend to be quite petuclant when things go against him, and i belive that is what happened yesterday. I am not saying he crashed dleiberatly, but that he was pushing far to hard because he was angry.

  • RCC14/09/2009 at 11:48

hmm, see i was under the impression lewis won last year’s championship by coming home 5th in brazil?

He did which was certainly underwhelming to say the least wasn't it?

The point is you have to go out there to win championships, you know that picking up second places isn't the way to convince everyone etc you're a worthy champion (Think Keke Rosberg - 1 victory in 1982 etc)

  • scott in italy (florence today)14/09/2009 at 11:48

He's certainly shown that in the past, so I take your point. I thought he was maturing this year. You're right - he had very little chance on the last lap. Still, it is nice to see a driver clearly going hard

  • me14/09/2009 at 11:50

The lad pushed hard to end, messed up once on a kerb and look where it got him. Just because he crashed doesn't mean it's not his fault. We can all see it was his fault alone, that doesn't mean though he was wrong to push which i feel is the point yr trying to make/defend etc

by your reasoning, we should have bernie’s medals system in place, because anything less than a win is worthless.

No that would be a stupid idea (medals), Lewis won his championship by winning races and fighting for postions all year long. You are going to get you're bad results (God know Lewis had a few last year) but you need to fight for every single point, championships being so close over the years have proved 1 solitary point can make all the difference.

    you think keke is worthless?

No worthless is a very strong word to use, I don't think any driver is worthless but when you look back at the 82 season and all the turmoil it endured history shows us that Rosberg is the champion but looking deeper into the year you'd of seen a couple other worthy contenders (Villenerve, Pironi) that weren't racing at the end of the season who dare I say it probably would've taken it from Rosberg. 1 win is hardly a great stat on winning WDC year though is it? Regardless if it was Schumi, Lewis, Clark, Hill etc.

If I'm not mistaken, it would still be alive right now. But the moment Barrichello fails to win a race from here on out, Button is automatically world champion.

Technically. Thing is, if you get a start like Jenson did, then really only one driver could seriously challange with the medal system

  • Nikki14/09/2009 at 12:14

Maybe F1 needs something less medally and more pointy, where you get points for everything ... fastest lap, qualifying on pole, etc. kind of like (urg) NASCAR (ahem ... sorry) -- or Fantasy Racers.

  • Nikki14/09/2009 at 12:18

Yay! Can't wait to hear it :)

Christine, with Steven's clip, "Travels" will be 35 minutes long. is that okay, or do we (and be we I mean startledbunny :) ) need to shave to get it down to 30? He's already sliced and diced quite a bit.

    #sidepodradio

I'd like that even less than a medal-based system - I surely don't want to see people in the back going out on fumes just to score a fastest lap, or the title being clinched somewhere outside of the actual race.

  • Jeremy (GMT 10)14/09/2009 at 12:25

I think the points system should be left alone. We've had some awfully good championship battles over the last few years.

Despite everyone writing this year off months ago, I've enjoyed every minute of it. The fat lady is warming her vocal chords, but it isn't a done deal yet.

I really enjoyed the small Toyota battle towards the end of yesterday's race and Lewis kept me in suspense until he lost it.

Pretty firey stuff! :D He winds max up quite a bit, but max was never going to say anything...

    About 52 mins in...

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 12:28

I'd like that even less than a medal-based system - I surely don't want to see people in the back going out on fumes just to score a fastest lap, or the title being clinched somewhere outside of the actual race.

I am not a massive fan of the current points system, i would be quite happy for them to try something different.

To play Devils Advocate: Whats so much better about coming 6th than qualifying on pole?

To play Devils Advocate: Whats so much better about coming 6th than qualifying on pole?

well, one day perhaps point or points for pole may make sense. but not with this race fuel qualifying ...

  • James14/09/2009 at 12:32

I think the points system should be left alone. We've had some awfully good championship battles over the last few years.

Cheeky plug at this point :D http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/09/07/8-how-could-the-championship-look/

  • Nikki14/09/2009 at 12:32

To play Devils Advocate: Whats so much better about coming 6th than qualifying on pole?

Exactly. I'm not saying you should get a lot of points for pole, or fastest lap, and a team wouldn't want to throw out their fuel strategy for the race just to get them, but it would shake it up a bit more, maybe?

  • Nikki14/09/2009 at 12:33

Christine, with Steven's clip, "Travels" will be 35 minutes long. is that okay, or do we (and be we I mean startledbunny :) ) need to shave to get it down to 30? He's already sliced and diced quite a bit.

I guess we'll have to check with Steven and Alison, as it is their show that follows yours :)

Exactly. I’m not saying you should get a lot of points for pole, or fastest lap, and a team wouldn’t want to throw out their fuel strategy for the race just to get them, but it would shake it up a bit more, maybe?

It's a tough line to balance on...I don't wanna see point handed out like it is in the lower formula's etc. It makes it almost worthless to see Driver A has 348 points vs Driver B's 273...The numbers get so large it becomes hard to follow and illogical on the outside to understand.

That said I wish there was some reward in pole position, fastest lap, weekend hat trick etc. Even just a single point for each would give some reward whilst not OTT.

One thing that is spot on that's been tested to death is the qualifying format.I love it the way it is, still not decided on fuel loads as I like the intrique but it's good to know that so and so was on a glory run etc!

I dont think so, nothing all that major really (Yet anyway ;))

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 12:53

Maybe for the one with JYS? Depends on whether enough people would be interested to talk about the what-ifs...

  • RCC14/09/2009 at 12:56

I think knockout quali with low-fuel Q3 next year will be epic.

It will be awesome, true raw pace hopefully will be unleashed! So does that mean we should see the same times between Q2 and Q3?

Put Fisi's debut in context, and compare him to where Badoer would have finished. Hes doing just fine, new car makes things much tougher for him

Put Fisi's debut in context, and compare him to where Badoer would have finished. Hes doing just fine, new car makes things much tougher for him

Maybe, but if you look at it in the Context of Liuzzi, it doesnt look all that great though...

  • Christine14/09/2009 at 13:00

    Here is one breakout: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/09/14/mclaren-confirm-santander-partnership-extension/

    JYS coming soon.

  • RCC14/09/2009 at 13:02

Maybe, but if you look at it in the Context of Liuzzi, it doesnt look all that great though…

No but taking into account everything Luizzi would probably just slightly nudge it on who did better. Fisi did much better then Badoer would've done and I thought he did a reasonable job for his first race out in a totally different car. His laptimes to Kimi albeit slower were nowhere near as embarrassing as Badoers.

Luizzi was the best newbie performer of the season helped by a car right on the boil at the moment.

I think Q3 will now be slightly faster than Q2, but given how close the whole field is right now, it probably won't be by much.

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 13:07

Maybe, but if you look at it in the Context of Liuzzi, it doesnt look all that great though…

But Liuzzi would know the FI better than Fisi knows the Ferrari, I think, given how long Liuzzi has been with the team.

But Liuzzi would know the FI better than Fisi knows the Ferrari, I think, given how long Liuzzi has been with the team.

Maybe, but in the context of Badoer, I would expect ferrari to have better simulators and he did get that testing/PR session before Valencia.

Then again maybe BAD isnt the best comparisson :P

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 13:51

how his pimping himself to f1 teams going to help him? they don't have a vote?

OIts more a question of getting access to lots of media at once, he can do the odd interview for say a southafrican newspaper, but what he really needs is to get on wire stories which will be read by people in virtualy every country.

The biggest hurdle he faces are people with votes who are short on information. He needs the publicity to break though the barriers that will be thrown up saying only he can be trusted.

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 13:51

how his pimping himself to f1 teams going to help him? they don’t have a vote?

i think nick is referring to a media war - anything but ari.

that said, i don't see how sing-gate and the leak would make max (and therefore by extension todt) look good to its voters?

I doubt they'll find any evidence either way regarding Alonso, so the matter should rest there rather than throwing unsubstianted claims around via the press. Flavio and Nelson the elder seem keen to throw mud at each other though.

It reads a bit like that but maybe something about the tone is being lost in translation. Dario should be pro-Alonso and playing the story down rather than building it up out of nothing. Hence the comment from Ecclestone tacked on the end and used as the headline.

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 14:57

I'd like to think he had nothing to do with it. If there was a plot, it'd make sense to keep the circle as small as possible. The more people who know, the more of a chance someone's going to shout their mouth off. I'd really question the wisdom of bringing Nelson into your clique. It's such a daft thing to do, it almost makes me think this whole thing must be fabricated.

Why? He is a smart young guy who took Lewis all the way to a title... I think its pretty clear what sort of treatment he was getting at Renault if the best they thought he could do was crash to help the other guy win.

The only dumb thing he did was go to Renault, but i guess that was sorted before they knew alonso was going back there, and was probably his dads idea more than his.

As for Alonso. I doubt anyone told him. but wit a nod and a wink i expect when he started the race he was expecting what happened to happen, even if he wasnt out right told. I'm not really a fan of his, but i dont think you can blame him. He just did what he was paid to do, and did it well enough to win the race...

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 15:04

Allegedly.... I just think he seems so naive. You can't come out in the press and call someone your executioner. It just shows such naivety. What does he have to gain by these allegations other than having his name dragged through he mud. I just don't get it.

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 15:07

Flav destroyed his career, at that point i would be pretty fuming and would probably have done the same.

I think this vendetta against flav is 90% his dad, he wouldnt have dared try it on his own, let alone wanted to.

I expect it wont have done all that much damage to his career as noone here could see him getting another f1 drive without his dads help before all this started.

Perhaps he will go on to be succesfull in the states then come back again, who knows. But i certainly think Flav has mistreated enough drivers for it to be time for one of them to bite him back...

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 15:09

Also, considering the way things have gone, I think confiding in Nelson has been proven to be an unwise thing to do.

Well he couldnt have got him to crash otherwise :P

Yes, i think its safe to say Flav underestimated the PK's!

Sacking him midseason, knowing he knew what he did was probably equally as dumb... Kinda makes you suspicious that there might be other ex driver out there who know things...

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 15:14

I expect none of it was recorded, and it will be very dificult to find a court which will see the case as being in its jursidiction.

I think renault have just backed flav so they can say they belived and supported him when it comes time to sure him... (although that is just my crazy opinion ;) )

in my opinion piquet destroyed his career when he got in an f1 car and spun it, crashed it, stalled it and spun it some more.

how long did it take him to out qualify alonso... 18 months? he scored, what, one podium?

he's a laughing stock almost on par with badoer. we spent the whole of 2008 laughing at his ineptitude behind the wheel. flav couldn't make it any worse if he tried.

Any drive at Renault is now a suicide mission, atleast whilst Nando is still there.

I'd rather do another year in GP2 than race in F1 under Flav

The phrase A Little Bit Piquet was coined for a reason! :)

  • Kathi14/09/2009 at 15:31

nope. not heard of it. what's it do?

Basically it's a specialised Ubuntu distro for media things. http://ubuntustudio.org/

Linux outlaws were talking about it in detail in episode 104 (http://linuxoutlaws.com/podcast/104)

and I am asking because I have problems getting it to boot but I guess you can't help ;)

    exactly :D

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 15:32

Thats a possibility, but would they press charges whilst they still have the Grand Prix?

Sure, why not? As long as Alonso isn't charged, FOM will not intervene, I'd think.

Thats true, I am not saying he has shown anything at his time with renault to suggest he was good enough to be a top driver....

But after silverstone last year i read quite a few people saying Massa was out of his depth at Ferrari and it was only a matter of time before Ferrari would want to move him out and hire Alonso.

Then he got his act together, and opinions can change quickly in F1. If drivers are given the chance to focus themselves they can develop and learn quickly. I just doubt he was given the chance to do that at Renault.

  • Christine14/09/2009 at 15:36

So what you're saying is Piquet needs himself a Rob?

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 15:37

I would loved to have seen what rob could have gotten out of him at Ferrari. Unlike Badoer i think he would actually have listened!

Heikki was also only up agaisnt Fisi, not Alonso

Heikki is in trouble. But who do you put in instead?

Depends what kind of driver you want.

Essentially what you want is Rubens but not Rubens.

    How about Heidfeld?

Although I'd still rather Kimi :)

...and that's another problem with itunes.

Also I don't understand/have never tried to use RSS. I don't really get what it is or how it works. I have no idea how else I'd keep up with a podcast.

Heh, you'd have scared me too much at first I think. I can't imagine coming on here and saying I'd only ever watched 3 GPs in their entirety my whole life yet I wanted to come on your website :P

    go itunes!

If anyone else is lurking abd worried that they don't know enough to come and argue with us you now know you can even if you have only watched one race. Commenting with us is way more fun than lurking.

    @ Alison

I have given away 5 minutes of our sidepodradio phone in show. Nikki's travel show had so many responses that after editing it is 35 minutes long. I don't want her to have to chop someone's contribution from the show so he best option was for us to have 5 minutes less.

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 17:22

You've managed to volunteer someone to do 5 minutes of our show? Well done. Only need a couple more volunteers and we'll be sorted.

James allen is saying that he always belived Alonso was not going to ferrari untill 2011, and next year was always a maybe... Thats not the way i remember it Chuck!

Interesting that he might be left stranded next year, especialy if he has t wait to see if massa is fit to race after the first test of the year.

And he has a quote from Alonso at the end which suggests he is going to Ferrari, but isnt that confident about next year.

So where else could he go, if the wort comes to worst? Id say Macca was out the window... Red Bull are full... Alonso to Brawn in 2010? :P

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 18:13

I don't think Alonso's gonna be without a seat. He left it awfully late to get out of McLaren in 2007 but he's not about to be standing up when the music stops.

i think the same, i would imagine campos or Epsilon would bow down to have him...

I also cant imagine the Renault team completely disappearing, if it all goes south and the company decides to pull out. They signed the Concorde so they will have to sell it on as a going concern or face large penalties...

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 18:15

Yeah. Even if he is left stranded. I'm sure someone's willing to make some space.

Techy question for Mr C. If I am doing an mp3 file for you is ID3v1 or ID3v2 better?

depends. if we're going to edit it. none at all, as they get removed. if it's going out as-is then id3v2 contains more info so is more useful.

  • Steven Roy14/09/2009 at 20:41

What were the questions? I need to see if I can answer them too.

I can't remember exactly but one was who was a boozy beggar, one contained the line of his own free will and the other was about Descates

  • Adie14/09/2009 at 20:41

    Evening guys.

    everyone had a good day?

  • Steven Roy14/09/2009 at 20:42

Couldn't possibly guess why. Urm, Pizzonia for F1 2010?

Manor ran him in the junior formulae and Stuart said he gave a lift to oneofthe new team principals who ran him in the junior formulae who said he was incredibly quick but needed a lot of support

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 20:43

It must be really dificult for the guys making the f1 game to know which circuits they should be making... Silverstone or Donnington, do they do turkey... what about south korea?

Hopefully they will do them all and release it as DLC!

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 20:44

Are you at uni now Lukeh or are you starting this September?

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 20:45

Are you at uni now Lukeh or are you starting this September?

I'm going back for my final year next week. Need to start getting referencs for my dissertation!

  • Adie14/09/2009 at 20:45

Totally. I've been in an excellent mood all day even with work! And it's Muse day!

Not listened yet. Today's been mental to be fair. In London for work tomorrow so will listen either to, or from on the train.

Manor ran him in the junior formulae and Stuart said he gave a lift to oneofthe new team principals who ran him in the junior formulae who said he was incredibly quick but needed a lot of support

I saw a rumour on an unreliable site about Branson unveling his involvement at Abu Dhabi, hopefully they will announce the drivers too...

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 20:46

I'm going back for my final year next week. Need to start getting referencs for my dissertation!

I did it all in 4 weeks, and wrote it in 3 days... NOT A GOOD IDEA!

I'm re-listening to the lossless version (the files are like.1.1mpbs sound quality for god sake!) and it just sounds even better than what I thought. This album is dangerous for my health.

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 20:47

I got a place on a primary teaching course (which is what im going to do long term) up in Cumbria, but decided against it because the accomodation situ was a bit dodgy (because id applied so late)...but...

    I'm doing Motorsport :D

Are any of the SPC editing crew around? I'm about to redo the F1TailPipe layout and wondered what photo editing S/W you use?

Had any joy with gimp? Have used elements in the past, plus had access to Elements 7 on another machine, that's sadly now died so need some editing SW.

Not sure what to go for and £75 for a copy of Elements is a bit steep at the moment!

Paint.Net is quite good- and free!

Paint.net is amazingly good for a free editor. I used to swear by IrfanView for more basic stuff like resizing and cropping.

On the Mac, Pixelmator is pretty awesome and very cheap.

Being stubborn. I chose to follow Button when he won the F-Ford festival and was featured in Autosport and tipped for F1. I got lucky when you see other drivers who've fallen by the wayside.

If he wins this year, it'll be epic.

Plus I've got a season ticket at AFC Bournemouth. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.

See in Australia, I was really happy when Kubica and Vettel had that smash as I wanted Rubens to do well. Now I feel like that's blasphemy. The only person I've really always been happy to see succeed is LewHam :P

  • Adie14/09/2009 at 21:11

You're gambling they will still be solvent by the end of the season :P

Yeah, this is the first year I paid in full upfront - God knows why. Usually do a monthly Direct Debit. I see it as a form of insurance!

Solvent by the end of the century would be nice!

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:11

Plus I've got a season ticket at AFC Bournemouth. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.

My mum has a season ticket for Newport County! When she told me I apologised and told her that the family will seek any medical help necessary,

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:11

    Oh look... Badoer won something!

    im so very confused...

CSAI President Angelo Sticchi Damiani presented the award to the Scuderia Ferrari drivers and Minardi, underlining their precious engagement as far as the promotion of young Italian drivers and a qualitatively high transfer from kart racing to Formula 3, GP2 and Formula One is concerned.

Well...Fisi...yes, he started a GP2 team...although sold it mid way through this season and the team is now involved in a legal battle over unpaid moneys (from when it was Fisi's team).....Badoer...i have no idea what he's done.

Maybe they just gave it to him because he was there..

OOOH, maybe THATS what was in teh boxes!!!

My mum has a season ticket for Newport County! When she told me I apologised and told her that the family will seek any medical help necessary,

As a non-league fan, I disagree. But, with about 2 other people in the stadium with me, I see your point.

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:13

I'm only joking about anyways, they're actually hving a fantastic season this far which is good really!

  • lou14/09/2009 at 21:13

How do you manage to choose favourite drivers and stick with them?? Can you teach me?

how do you not manage to have a favourite driver and stick with them ;)

seriously i'm not really that sure... i mean i started to follow Jenson when i started watching f1 and it just kinda stuck, then through my support of Jenson i realised just how amazing the team were and here we are :D me an obsessed F1, JB and Brawn/ Honda Fan :D It was tough to watch the team and Jenson go through 2007 and 2008 but you just have to stick with them, i don't support them because i think he is the best driver on the grid, but i support him cause i think he is awesome,a great driver, and i dunno.. i can't explain it.

  • Adie14/09/2009 at 21:14

My non-league team had 200 people turn up in 10,000 capacity stadium. They went bankrupt.

That means...when you translate it out of Lou speak (like Ron speak just with actual words..)

"I love him, and he loves me!!!"

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:15

As a non-league fan, I disagree. But, with about 2 other people in the stadium with me, I see your point.

It's like the old Birmingham City jokes - "I was watching them play and said to the bloke next to me: OI!" and "Birmingham City have just purchased a new people carrier. It's to take the fans home after the match"

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:16

You could be like league 2 Darlington and have and average of 2500 people turn up 23 times a season to this:

    http://bit.ly/PxzWM

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:17

    Boo :(

Horrendously mis managed. Real shame as my family were really involved in that club as well. The team took the decision to get promoted, went wrong from there :(

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:17

Ah see I'm sort of like that. There's some drivers I'm happy to see succeed and some drivers I will into the wall/each other with my mind :P (Obviously no-one is injured.....)

Some people I could never support. Else I thought so, but I kinda feel so sympathetic towards Alonso and Kimi atm, I guess anything's possible.

I did always support Jenson and I'd be devastated if he lost this championship. I just like the fairytale story aspect. I really want people to do well and show people what they're made of. That's probably why I spent my last 6 months praying for Nelson Piquet :P

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:17

    Newcastle?

  • lou14/09/2009 at 21:18

    But John does....

ahaah he probably remembers the punch in the back more than he remembers me ahaha

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:18

    Newcastle?

Blue Star. Won the FA Vase once.

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:19

haha i'm really bad at expressing myself at the best of times, but today i seemto be running on autopilot.. apologies.

no, you actually did make sense, i was just having a bit of fun :D

  • lou14/09/2009 at 21:20

no, you actually did make sense, i was just having a bit of fun :D

ah fair enough, i didn't understand what i said, so thank god someone did :D

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:21

Blue Star. Won the FA Vase once.

To link it back to F1, the owners did a Flav like statement basically insulting the fans.

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:22

ah fair enough, i didn't understand what i said, so thank god someone did :D

Hehehe you make good sense. I'm jealous ;)

Maybe I'll have to choose some drivers sooner or later. I think Lewis is the closest I've ever had to a regular favourite.

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:23

Maybe I'll have to choose some drivers sooner or later. I think Lewis is the closest I've ever had to a regular favourite.

    It's not compulsory.

  • lou14/09/2009 at 21:23

Maybe I'll have to choose some drivers sooner or later. I think Lewis is the closest I've ever had to a regular favourite.

i could never support lewis... itv made sure of that, plus i find his personality kinda annoying, then again it's probably the whole 'brought up by mclaren' thing... i'm not a big fan of mclaren...

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:24

    It's not compulsory.

My little heart can't deal with having so many conflicted emotions though!

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:24

It can be teams as well, thats how I worked until Timo came along.

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:24

i think he's pretty awesome, i saw him first in GP2 and really like him, i think behind the media bit is a pretty nice guy

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:24

i could never support lewis... itv made sure of that, plus i find his personality kinda annoying, then again it's probably the whole 'brought up by mclaren' thing... i'm not a big fan of mclaren...

Ron Dennis didn't help for me. And even when he went, Anthony Hamilton was just as bad.

lewis himself I don't think is a bad guy! I like his interviews when he's not in PR mode and he obviously loves the sport, but the people around him for me ruin the good things about him.

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:25

lewis himself I don't think is a bad guy! I like his interviews when he's not in PR mode and he obviously loves the sport, but the people around him for me ruin the good things about him.

Just as an example, the Silverstone video with Jake. He was fantastic there! That's the Lewis it should be all the time.

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:25

i could never support lewis... itv made sure of that, plus i find his personality kinda annoying, then again it's probably the whole 'brought up by mclaren' thing... i'm not a big fan of mclaren...

I don't think Lewis is a bad guy, I see him as a canny person who you could get on with. Its just unfortunate he was with McLaren (media sense)

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:26

It can be teams as well, thats how I worked until Timo came along.

You could just join my policy of supporting everyone and anyone who beats Ferrari :P

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:26

i could never support lewis... itv made sure of that, plus i find his personality kinda annoying, then again it's probably the whole 'brought up by mclaren' thing... i'm not a big fan of mclaren...

See I never endured that.... Not really. The only mad stuff I heard from them was when he won his championship and I cried when that happened so I can't really judge!

I didn't follow F1 through most of the dramas that people dislike him for. Reading back over events gave me more of a negative view of Alonso than anything else....

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:26

I don't think Lewis is a bad guy, I see him as a canny person who you could get on with. Its just unfortunate he was with McLaren (media sense)

i think if he was brought up in a Mclaren now (i.e a non-ron-mclaren) then things might be a bit different

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:27

My little heart can't deal with having so many conflicted emotions though!

It used to be easy - any driver except Michael Schumacher.

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:28

i think if he was brought up in a Mclaren now (i.e a non-ron-mclaren) then things might be a bit different

For s.. certain, he's more less PR'y under the Whitmarsh reigime.

  • Adie14/09/2009 at 21:29

Ron Dennis didn't help for me. And even when he went, Anthony Hamilton was just as bad.

    Same.

Followed him through the junior ranks, and saw a F-Renault race at Rockingham, in which he demolished the field from pretty much last on the grid.

Really pleased when he made the switch in '07, but just got turned off to him by the ITV coverage, and how it was forced down your throat that he was the Messiah.

I don't necessarily think he's a bad person, but his 'image' is just too polished. He's a fantastic talent, and as a brit I feel like I should support him - but he just leaves me a little flat. Shame.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/09/2009 at 21:30

I was treated by a client to a presentation and then a 3-hour trip on a 100-year old sailboat with a nice dinner and lots of booze. Very good!

    Excellent! Wow - good skills.

I sailed on this: http://bit.ly/1UX6cN a few years ago, Norway to Portsmouth via Ostend in Belgium. Amazing 2 weeks.

Erm.... our boat was a lot smaller than that!

    Night all!

It used to be easy - any driver except Michael Schumacher.

Hehehehe from my uneducated non-F1 watching viewpoint, I used to like hearing about Shumacher. It was the only name I really recognised :P

Also the huge interview the BBC did with Alonso has made me like him a lot more. He's returned to my list of people I'm happy to see succeed! Maybe that's just because he's pants again though..... I don't think my selection criteria are really up to scratch :D

  • RG14/09/2009 at 21:31

aww man, i hope you can get back to it. would be a shame to waste all that talent

Yeah. It's gonna be crazy hard work to get caught up again though. I'm not looking forward to trying to make new friends either.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:47

I'm so excited at getting to drive for the first time on Wednesday! :D

I would advise you not to play any driving computer games for at least 24 hours before!

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:47

I'm so excited at getting to drive for the first time on Wednesday! :D

W00t. its alot of fun, just be patient with yourself.

I recently started driving again after an 18-month-its-not-safe-for-you-to-drive-because-you-may-fall-asleep-at-the-wheel-related period, its nice to be back :D

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:48

    ill iplayer f1 i think

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:48

    ill iplayer f1 i think

You'll need a license for that too then if you're gonna be at Uni. or so they say anyways.

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:49

You'll need a license for that too then if you're gonna be at Uni. or so they say anyways.

No. You need a license to watch things on the internet if you watch them LIVE. On demand services require no license.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:49

    ill iplayer f1 i think

Same thing really, just make sure your billing adress is one with a tv licence if you are worried?

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:50

So watching F1 on the BBC website as it's happening isn't allowed but watching it on iplayer later is fine. Stupid system but that's how it works.

  • Lukeh14/09/2009 at 21:50

No. You need a license to watch things on the internet if you watch them LIVE. On demand services require no license.

ah, ok. Wasn;t sure on that, all our uni said was WATCHING INTERNETS TV IS BAD. basically. I live at home so I kinda ignored that bit... :P

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:50

No. You need a license to watch things on the internet if you watch them LIVE. On demand services require no license.

Eurosprt player is like skyplayer though... its live iptv

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:50

You'll need a license for that too then if you're gonna be at Uni. or so they say anyways.

no ya only need it if your watching it live

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:50

Eurosprt player is like skyplayer though... its live iptv

Yeah I'm sure it is. I was just saying about the iplayer.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:51

Yeah I'm sure it is. I was just saying about the iplayer.

    aha

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:51

But f1 isnt on iplayer, its on bbc sport player...

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:52

But f1 isnt on iplayer, its on bbc sport player...

You can get it on iplayer after the event. You're not allowed to watch it live on the website without a license no matter where you try and watch it.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:52

US open satellite signal is braking up like a teenage couple...

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:52

But f1 isnt on iplayer, its on bbc sport player...

are you making this up? ;)

If its live you need a licence, if its not you dont

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:53

No. You need a license to watch things on the internet if you watch them LIVE. On demand services require no license.

This is technically true, but difficult to enforce.

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:53

ah, ok. Wasn;t sure on that, all our uni said was WATCHING INTERNETS TV IS BAD. basically. I live at home so I kinda ignored that bit... :P

    Bandwidth is the real reason

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:53

This is technically true, but difficult to enforce.

    Did I say I had a licence? :P

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:54

No. You need a license to watch things on the internet if you watch them LIVE. On demand services require no license.

It's not, uni's are really hot on that type of thing

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:54

If its live you need a licence, if its not you dont

    Exactly... iplayer isnt live.

But the f1 is live so it isn't on iplayer... ergo, you technically need a licence, same as iptv from eurosport and sky...

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 21:55

F1 is on the iplayer....im watching it right now...

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:55

If its live you need a licence, if its not you dont

Exactly. but only if you are in the UK - it is perfectly legal to watch UK television from outside the UK without a licence (note it's licence with a C).

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 21:56

It's not, uni's are really hot on that type of thing

There are ways to avoid detection. "The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it"

Besides I had no problems when I was at Nottingham Uni back in July.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 21:57

Exactly. but only if you are in the UK - it is perfectly legal to watch UK television from outside the UK without a licence (note it's licence with a C).

I thought the law said you need a licence to recive television in the UK, if so it wouldn't matter where it comes from?>

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 21:58

I thought the law said you need a licence to recive television in the UK, if so it wouldn't matter where it comes from?>

    It's something like that yeah.

  • Andy Taylor14/09/2009 at 22:00

If I record a TV show in my own home and I have a TV licence, that's OK

If I take that recording to my friend who doesn't have a licence and he watches it on his own TV (one that's not connected to an aerial), that's OK too.

It's also OK just to listen to the audio feed of a TV station provided the equipment you are using is not capable of showing the video.

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 22:02

You mean watching F1 on my laptop live, but just closing my eyes isnt ok? ;)

It's going to be a new experience this year, watching F1 through Five live and live timing :D

Yes, but if you are outside the UK, say in Ireland for example, you'd not have to pay a penny. Until the advent of satellite TV, you could see massive aerials in the republic which were pointed at UK transmitters.

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 22:04

How about you do it in someone else's room?? Or go to the bar at your halls? That's always fun!

Yeah. Meet some other F1 fans.... Sounds like a plan. There were guys did that in my halls on the projector in the bar. Not that I joined them, I wasn't interested then.

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 22:10

    He does!?

I'm watching Qualy. He got really irritated at Jake when he suggested Torro Rosso did well last year because of him and then EJ said he thought Vettel was Red Bull's number 1 driver. He got all flustered, I thought his head was going to explode.

"Well, I'd argue that it wasn't all down to driver line-up.........."

    hahahah,

    I guess whilst he invented it and trained everyone how to use it, he had to sell it and move on {Comment #406}

I suppose, given how old EJ was when the internet was invented, that he could have been selling second-hand servers along with the second-hand cars and carpets...

Brundle now just seems bored with Legard, like the person in your class who you have to sit next to who you didnt like and couldnt wait till the next year to be able to change seats!

P.S if you didnt have someone in your class like that...then you were the person ;)

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 22:37

    ahahahaha.

    LewHams just had his crash...

"OH LEWIS HAMILTON SPINS! (shot pans out to hamilton backwards into a wall, with half his car covering the track )SOMETHINGS HAPPENED THERE"

Thank you Mr Leggard for that informative commentary

  • Alison14/09/2009 at 22:39

Thank you Mr Leggard for that informative commentary

He's awesome! There was some problem with iplayer. I started watching what they told me was Monza but for some reason Spa was on there. I only noticed it was the wrong race when I heard Legard tell me "Fisichella's into the lead first...." I thought that was a classic.

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 22:40

I'm gonna love it the first time I see someone get into the lead 3rd.....

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 22:49

    Morning, everyone.

Wow, 2 straight double faults from del Potro means that from 4-3 up, he loses 4-6 to Federer in the 3rd. Fed now up 2 sets to 1.

  • Jon Waldock14/09/2009 at 22:50

P.S, i don't like Richard Branson. He tries to claim all the good stuff from Brawn wins...but he's leaving at the end of the season!! BOO

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 22:51

Hehe, just realised watching the forum, that they tried to cover up the fact that they have spent half the season in red bull by claiming they were in 'torro rosso'

Im guessing they realise the fans will notice, but the bosses will think its a different team :P

  • Nick14/09/2009 at 22:52

I think he just likes to Party!.... oooh everybody does!

Hehe. By next season, I think he'll realize not every new team is a Brawn. He'll need Brawn more than Brawn needs him.

  • Journeyer14/09/2009 at 22:59

DB went down for like 2 minutes or so...

  • Amy14/09/2009 at 23:00

you are all on my naughty step. As are the people who scheduled a meeting for me in 2 min so i miss end of tennis. I realised it wouldnt be so bad for delpo to win because i would LAUGH if he got a slam before murray.

  • Alianora La Canta14/09/2009 at 23:23

    How do you manage to choose favourite drivers and stick with them?? Can you teach me? {Comment #768}

First, I decide what I'd like to see in a driver (carefully ensuring I don't include anything directly performance-related because there are never any guarantees for that). Then I wait to see if anything suggests itself. I find if I wait long enough, I will end up with a favourite driver without feeling the need to force the matter. Furthermore, I've found if I select drivers on that basis, I don't feel tempted to drop them at the first sign of stuff going wrong.

Admittedly, I didn't do that with Damon Hill. All I know is my 7-year-old self saw him do a third of the French Grand Prix in 1993 and decided she wanted to support him.

Team support would probably work the same way, but supporting Jordan pretty much spoiled any possibility of me supporting any team other than whichever iteration of it was/is running at a given time.

  • Alianora La Canta14/09/2009 at 23:27

    Well…Fisi…yes, he started a GP2 team…although sold it mid way through this season {Comment #789}

Fisi still has a Euro 3000 team that's en route to the title for the second time in five years (and, until quite recently, a fairly average Formula BMW team as well).
