Hello there, it's Christine. I am covering for RG today as he has taken to the books to begin studying for exams. We wish him all the best of luck, but also know that he won't need it because he's a clever little soul. I am in the midst of working out the new daily rotas, so if you have expressed a desire to write for us, please bear with me as I get to grips with it all.
Moving on. Hey look at that! We're halfway through May already. Is time flying for you? It certainly is for me. We're rushing headlong into another back-to-back race weekend situation as well, with Spain and then Monaco rapidly approaching us. We'll be expecting more action like we saw in Turkey, like this photo from the opening lap.

Red Bull lead in Turkey
However, there's an entire week to get through first, and this is Monday, so it is time to begin the week. On Twitter:
Just back from weekend in austria helping to open revamped redbullring..photos to follow..
And there are, indeed, photos on his Twitter account. We are pondering what this revamp will mean - could the A1 Ring return to Formula One?
Whilst we've mentioned Twitter, it's worth mentioning to look out today as I'll be posting my Tweets of the Week later on. Ten of the best updates, 140 characters or less. Such fun!
Yesterday I wrote about the game Real Racing 2 on the iPad 2, which is a game that even really rubbish people at racing games can win. Trust me, I am one of those!
A quick plug for Maverick's most excellent post on Elio de Angelis which is great reading if you like your F1 history.
Yesterday, we watched a bit of Formula 1 on TV, when Richard Hammond took his engineering mind to the sport on the BBC. I apologise to those outside the UK, but it was a good show, not massively in depth but great for those who want an introduction into the concepts that go into making fast cars. Also, you get to see a fuel tank outside the car and it's all bendy! So cool!
Finally, if you are a follower of Leo Laporte of TWiT fame, you'll know that he's moving into a new studio. I'm a massive Leo fan, he's pretty much the inspiration for a lot of the podcasting efforts we do. He's selling bricks in his new studio, and they can feature a message. Does anyone else think we should have a Sidepodcast brick within Leo's studio? I reckon we could do that via Paypal, what do you think? If you feel like donating towards the cause, check the right hand side of the homepage for the big yellow buttons. We could get our name up in lights etched stone!
That will do it for me today. Happy Monday everyone, keep smiling, and I will see you in the comments.
Also, you get to see a fuel tank outside the car and it's all bendy! So cool!
the last time i saw an actual f1 fuel tank was because jenson button had a secret second tank to make his car faster. #goodtimes
Hey folks,
Not long back from Snetterton. WHat goes on?
I heard Magnussen had a good weekend
Pretty much every overtake he did was around the outside...
I read that. Obviously inherited some of his old man's talent. I hope he has a better attitude
Around the outside f turn 1 for a win... twice!! After a shaky first couple of rounds, it was a great job.
Read it? Where may I ask..?
Autosport I think
Gahhhh... they're amateurs (probably)
;)
:D

Morning. My Azeri colleague was very happy about his homeland's Eurovision win :)
OMG, he's brought cake later to celebrate! :D
Hehe!
So i was just casually walking past the newspaper...
and... http://gulfnews.com/sport/football/maradona-to-be-al-wasl-boss-1.808333
Maradona, as in the actual Argentinian bloke is going to coach the team i supported here as a kid.
WTF??? I think the next most famous person to have been at the club once sat on Herta Berlins Subs bench in 1993
I see Mr. Rubython is at it again, this time about Richard Burton: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-13399439

morning all
The dessert from the ad is finally on masterchef! Turns out it's cherry sorbet covered in coconut icecream covered in sponge covered in meringue. I won't be making one.
Sounds interesting
I'm sad there is no custard aferall but it still looks good
off topic comments over here (gavin)
Which one?
really don't want a discussion about rachel's fab badger post in the photographers thread.
That's a bit harsh. It's one sentence referring to that while the rest of the comment was on topic.
i know, but you know what will happen, rachel will come back and say "thanks gavin i had a great time in turkey", and you'll say "yeah, we had a great time in spa last year". etc.
Someone got out the wrong side of bed today!
Ping --> Public Transport’s Ping-Pong Ball
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/05/16/public-transports-ping-pong-ball/
it happens all the time, i'm not picking on gavin specifically, i deleted this conversation yesterday too:
- "i only popped in for a few minutes, am off now"
- "bye x"
- "see ya x"
- "yeah, bye x"
we have daily posts for just these things. but yes, i might have a hangover. apologies.
Oooh, how did you know I was going to say that? ;)
:)
Fair enough. I've tried really hard to keep comments on topic and have been really careful not to post them in the wrong thread lately.
{Grumble}
I think I've got a cold coming...
:/
Yum :)
tis okay, this one is important though, lots of non-spc people are reading it.
It's only 90 minutes away!
thats scary enough to keep me from posting in it, ever :D
ha :)
So #nopolitics obv but I like that people are starting to visualise proposals more now that we have the web. For example the proposal about the future of parental leave after child birth:
http://discuss.bis.gov.uk/modernworkplaces/visualisation/#none
It's a really really really complicated thing to understand and I think it's pretty neat that they have drawn both options out.
Christine did you see that they were having problems selling TWIT bricks to non-us people? Boo
Still looks quite complicated to me.
Also, you are sneaky. Talking about babies but also mfc stuff. You've got away with it twice now :)
I am pretty sneaky... it's important to remember that ;)
Since he launched the international one?
But imagine how much more complicated it would be if you tried to read it :)
Ignore me... oooooops
I'd go back in, but it's a subject that tends to get me quite fired up and right now, I'm too tired, ill and am in work to really give it too much though
Took me a while to realize the 2 options changed with a button and you didnt mean whether you chose to be a man or a woman :D
I've mostly been reading it with a shocked look on my face going 'why so meeeeeeean'
This looks awesome. they are remaking lunar-lander (nearly everyone must have played this) in 3D
http://kotaku.com/5802163/one-of-the-oldest-video-games-makes-a-comeback
Better still it will run in your browser!
I must be hard for Lou, great to have so many F1 snappers on Sidepodcast, but I would guess she doesnt want to upset anyone
Oh my!
Me too! :)
I spent a fortune learning not to smash the lander to bits when it was an arcade game. Seems so weird now that you had to go to an arcade to play video games
I have that as a chrome app BTW. Love it!
It happens... I've heard some brilliant arguments on both sides, but also some absurd ones - later on maybe.
Do you have a link?
Not right now but I believe I found it in the chrome app store - it's an official Atari app.
Ah, the classic one.
I will have a look though, cheers!

Pretty much a confirmation of what we already know
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13412925.stm
Meanwhile, it's probably best to avoid Central London right now
On the realtime page, the shuttle launch isn't in the drop down box of active pages. should it be?
Problem is the post was written in April for the original launch date.
OK. Glad I'm not going crazy/blind.
Hmmmmm....
Oh and ex-Force India man Mark Smith started at Lotus today (which I didn't know about)
Probably because he started leaving Force India for there 12 months ago. There was some talk at the time but not much since.
We just had Eurovision cake! A big fruity layer cake with 'Azerbaijan' written on it, accompanied by the winning song. Apparently in Baku there was a huge party and people have already begun preparations!

Sammy Wanjiru has died aged 24. :( He was a talent in the marathon, set records.
Very sad indeed
:(
I hadn't realised Marussia Virgin sponsored Carlin's FR3.5 team, here's Wickens
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13273106
Shame he crashed it.
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13273112
It's the same Manor GP team that are in a few junior formulae
Caption said Carlin, makes more sense if it is Manor
Actually just checked - it is Carlin. Oddly, they're a Red Bull backed team too...
Does anyone fancy slapping some sense in Andrea Caldarelli? He's ditched a good level team in GP3 for a seat in Formula Nippon...
Obscurity beckons.
2nd in the Championship after Turkey - seriously, what the...
Wow really? Odd move then.
Aye - completely off the wall
Awesome move, their cars look like fish!
The Nippon cars are great (Swift 0.17n chassis), but the series is motor racing's equivalent of the Sahara Desert
Evening, I am now home from work :)
Hmmm... I've still another hour left - not in the door 'til about half past seven
:/
For those not in /realtime, the 3rd practice session has started at Indy and there is a thread for it here:
http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-indy-500-practice-sessions
cheers pat
Good afternoon people
So, is there a warm feeling about buying a TWIT Brick?
what's a twit brick?
As mentioned in theDaily and at https://www.brickorder.com/twit/
Part of Leo Laporte's This Week in Tech studio refurb/rebuild project
Oh right.
You can even watch and listen to them working on it. The building already existed but they have totally stripped it out and are re-doing the inside
bit.ly/twitdrop
Someone just left a rather interesting comment on my blog Re: motor racing in Angola...
I was convinced it was closed down. Recent pictures of it show little more than a dirt track
www.bit.ly/twitdrop
To be fair, winning Formula Nippon makes a driver automatically eligible for a Superlicence and (I think) often pays money, but this is a serious gamble and even if it works, I think Andrea will need to do some time in GP2 to convince people he's not the next Yuji Ide.
Must be lunch break now then :D
Admittedly though, I still don't think Angola has an international racing authority to grand licenses.
The reason so many drivers went in the 80s and 90s was money. They were also encouraged to drive in more than one championship so they would do F3 or F Nippon and also do GT/sportscars
They have lots of those
oooh, we gotta have one :)
I think those days have gone though. Even in the 90's, Nippon was considered a last chance saloon - it'd be thought of even less now.
Very true. I still think multiple simultaneous series in junior formulae is beneficial to overall driver skill (Nico Hulkenburg is a good example), but Japan right now is probably not the best time/place to try it. Still, if the FNippon is paid it may be a more viable long-term solution than possibly running out of money (either during GP3 or on the transition to GP2).
*daily*
Especially when the last person from there to do a F1 race was Yuji Ide. As a direct path, it's useless. Still, as a sidestep that could help progression a bit, I can think of much stupider ideas.
Cycling through London without a helmet is one.
Agreed!

A criminal complaint against Sutil
Uh oh.
One wonders if and when he'll be let go. You just know Hulk wants that seat. On the other hand, Gachot only lost his seat when he was sentenced to jail time. That said, Eddie liked his driving before the arrest. Not to mention, he had no 3rd driver ready to go and needed to look for a replacement.
Also:
“Furthermore, please note that Mr Eric Lux does not exclude commencing an action against any other persons involved in this matter.”
Hmmm. That'll keep Lewis on his toes.
my wife: "You'd go go kart racing with my parents in town!?"
me: "yes, yes I would. I'm leading my class, I have to go!"
Ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/adrian-sutil-faces-criminal-complaint-from-genii-capitals-eric-lux
:)
You're right, that is a quick process. :)
hehe, there was a delay because she was writing tweets of the week at the time too.
*stunned*
Seems odd to take so long to do this
Why is there any connection between the two things unless they want to go karting too?
I'm guessing she wants me to spend time with them or something.
after 4 days of commenting, i should probably go get something done for a change :)
I shoo you.
I wonder how easy it will be to drag you back to the comments
I wonder if they would've bothered if it hadn't come out in the press
If someone had glassed me I would be calling the cops immediately. I certainly wouldn't wait until they were on a different continent
and isn't/shouldn't the criminal complaint be filed in China, where it happened? (or will it be?). I tdoes sound awful weird that he waited this long.
No-one else other than maybe the FIA has any jurisdiction but the FIA can't exactly award damages or jail Sutil. All they can do is fine him or ban him and what does that achieve? Most people think Hulkenberg is a better driver so why take action that gives the opposition a better driver
Oh dear. I find all of this really surprising.
Pie!
Am daily writing, (which feels odd in itself) is there anything anyone would like ncluding? :)
Evening everyone
Can I possibly get this squeezed in please?

:)
I'll try. :)
Football players refusing to learn...

Interesting news about Highcroft not entering Le Mans. Their muted IndyCar entry this year also fell by the wayside - I'd love to know what's going on...
Ihave never known that to happen before Real did it
They're blaming the troubles in Japan. SOunds like somthing more to me.
I love how the fan runs down the road after bus waving the shield in the air, celebrating
:)
Something is definitely rumbling somewhere. Is part of the sportscar series about to dip?
The ALMS is struggling to get LMP cars, but the ILMC isn't.
!?!? there are LMP cars in the ALMS!?!
;)
Heh, GT race with a bit of a demonstration run at the same time
Exciting times at my house. We've just received a load of free broken computers that are considerably faster than anything we currently have. Turns out at least two of them only had relatively minor faults (a laptop that needed its operating system reinstalling and a couple of connectors put back where they belonged and a desktop with a partition virus) and one of them may well be replacing mine in the next fortnight. Hopefully this will mean you won't have to put up with any more "Grr! Site X doesn't work for me but does for everyone else! Grrr!" rants...
It was a bit of shock that the ILMC ended up taking so many more LMPs out of ALMS than LMS.
Lack of spares due to other teams crashing their cars, and also a lack of money (lots of teams are having trouble with this in sportscars and not just the prototype ones).
I am sure you will be very pleased about that
Highcroft has also ended its relationship with Honda, so I wouldn't put money on seeing their LMP cars again this year, given the other clues given by Highcroft's various withdrawals.
I am :) It's a 2.4GHz Celeron machine and just to highlight how technology's moved on, its onboard graphics chip is better than the add-on card my current one uses.
As I understand it, there are 2 more desktops to be sorted through in this batch.
The FIA wouldn't be trying to punish the team - they'd be trying to punish Adrian as an individual and send a message to anyone else who might consider putting themselves in similar situations. The effect on the team would be irrelevant to them, just as it was 20 years ago when this team was last in this situation.
The criminal complaint could be filed in France because the victim is French but I would imagine the judge would ask for it to be heard in a Chinese court under Chinese law. As for why it wasn't filed at the time - well, Mr Lux was getting stitches initially and after that probably needed to get out of the country as fast as possible to avoid breaching the visa length. Medical treatment is exempted from visa time restrictions but I don't think there's an exemption for co-operating with police enquiries in China. I may be wrong on that, though.
Good point.
This is fun. @Stefmara took a pic of the shuttle launch from a nearby commercial flight. It has been retweeted countless times in the last few hours.
Here's another Photo of the shuttle from my plane. http://twitpic.com/4yg6hs
So then she tweets this:
Anyone want to hire me??? http://linkd.in/mn8QWe #jobs #sportsbiz #worldfamousiphonephotographer
Great shot
I'm taking a wild guess that if we were given the names of the other people whom Eric is considering prosecuting, we wouldn't recognise any of the names.
lewis hamilton
brilliant, now we just need to replace the operator ;)
#imonlyjoking
#paranoidaboutpeopleparanoid
If he left as soon as it kicked off, would he be getting charged? I can see him being summoned as a witness but that doesn't mean he was in the brawl itself.
:D
I thought you were too busy to comment. Or has Christine gone to bed?
Hopefully the latter - the row could be frightful otherwise.
that's the only other name that has been mentioned and he's friends with sutil. i'm only guessing, but i wouldn't be surprised if the other person is someone known to us.
thought i oughta check the daily is ok :)
#confidential
:D
