Hello.  Wednesday again!  Not long now until the season starts, so as the teams are packing up and shipping out to Australia, there isn’t much in the way of news.  I do have some good links for you however ;)

Today’s Link-tastic Goodness

So… Let’s start with the Senna Movie.  James Allen announced that there will be a special London Screening in May on behalf of the Grand Prix Mechanics’ Trust (who he is a patron of) that will include “…some of Senna’s mechanics, engineers and closest paddock friends will be there as will some well known faces from F1 past and present.”  I am very keen to go, costs permitting.  Meanwhile I have been recruited by Asif Kapadia (the director) to contact the local distributor to see if I can help get it released in Denmark.  Wish me luck!

Charlie Whiting has written to F1 pass holders about the new adjustable rear wing system.  Pat sums it up best: “They confirm the rules of the DRS / ARW (have we sorted the TLA yet?). To be honest there's not much we didn't already know, but what is now confirmed is that the TV people will be sent a signal so viewers will know who's activated their wing.”

If KERS and the moveable rear wing still confuse you, why not let Mark Webber explain it, in awesome HD :D

Speaking of HD, have you seen this BBC promo for the HD coverage yet?  Or these fantastic fan-made F1 posters?

Speaking of fans, Eimze shared some great insight into how the drivers acted during F1 testing in Barcelona on Christine’s Driver Rankings.  While we mention it, why not check out her Team Rankings, Tweets of the Week and a great F1 Big Picture bundle from testing.

ESPN F1 are launching an app and Karun Chandhok will be writing for them.  I hope he gets back into an F1 car soon though.

Pat’s got his TMR post up for the week and as it’s Sebring, MotoGP and NASCAR this weekend there are plenty of drivers to choose from.  Every now and then I will write a short post with some graphs that show interesting data from the game – But I am going to try and pick ex- or current F1 drivers just for a laugh.  Speaking of which, Christine has a small update on IheartFranck ;)

I am going to blow your mind now.  With all this talk of Brian Cox, sidepodspace and awesome TV programmes, I have found an interactive Scale of the Universe tool.  Pretty cool huh?

How about something lighter, like Star Wars told in an Iconoscope format? Some would even argue the acting is better – the characters are at least two dimensional ;)

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost probably love Star Wars – so they tried to make their own version.  Shame they only managed one scene (note there is a bleeped out swear word at the end)

If Facebook had been invented in the 1970’s, I wonder if it would have looked like this at all?

Mario has been with us since the 70’s – and over the years, the sadistic folks at Nintendo have been thinking of some rather creative ways of killing him!

These pics from an expedition to a lava lake are so cool – I love the colours!  The team that did this are bonkers though!

WHOsdays are back and this time it’s the turn of the Brigadier.

As it’s “Hump Day”, you are probably feeling lazy.  Here’s the best way how to do it

Monday was Pi Day, and the Lego a Day blog had an awesome pic to celebrate!!!

Finally here’s a cool new version of the video game of Micro Machines – except you make the circuits.  Could this be the next step for devices like the Kinect, perhaps?

So that’s all from me – have a great day and see you in the comments! :)

External. Think I need a change from what I'm doing.

"but what is now confirmed is that the TV people will be sent a signal so viewers will know who's activated their wing"

this is great news. i can't figure how it'll be sent to tv graphics and relayed to us fast enough to fathom, but it's a start.

It can't be used until Race Control tells the driver. All it would take is for a signal to be sent to TV Central at the same time.

won't it be a split second before it's enabled, and then another second before it's closed again?

i'm imagining a flash of a wing icon appearing and disappearing almost instantly. no?

  • Pat W16/03/2011 at 00:33

Loads of links! I've only checked a few so far but I like the one about laziness.

The TV companies will be winging it for sure ;)

  • Alianora La Canta16/03/2011 at 00:33

won't it be a split second before it's enabled, and then another second before it's closed again?

It goes up 600m (or slightly closer) to the corner and released at the braking zone. It should be engaged for several seconds.

  • RubberGoat16/03/2011 at 00:34

Instapaper rocks for collecting links - I've been doing so since Sunday and all I have to do to save it is click one button!

Same way KERS is, or push-to-pass in A1 or wherever. The info will be available to the gallery almost instantaneously. We're gonna have to rely on the TV people realising it and putting the right graphic up. A1GP had a dedicated graphic.

No the 1sec thing was about the measurement between cars, not the length of time the wing works

  • RubberGoat16/03/2011 at 00:38

No the 1sec thing was about the measurement between cars, not the length of time the wing works

The distance is 600m, according to the vid and the JAF1 article.

(This excites me because there are 5 operating systems for my PDA and messing about with that sort of stuff sounds cool to me)

  • Pat W16/03/2011 at 00:39

No the 1sec thing was about the measurement between cars, not the length of time the wing works

The time gap will be measured at turn 14 in Melbourne, that's the left of the left-right near pit entry. Cars within 1sec will be able to use the wing, but not until they get past the last corner. They say 600m from the braking zone (or was it the apex?) of turn 1, but I think that'll be lengthened after testing in FP1 / FP2.

We're actually getting the house ready to put on the market right now. Should be ready in a few weeks.

I need to figure out a way of transffering two silly soirt of F1-related photos from facebook to flickr, if that's possible. Could have done it the easy way but I am not sure which of eight HDD the photos live in so facebook to flickr should be the easier way.

Not as well as I would like. It saves the images as *j-pegs only. Works for want I currently want....

Well, Button does own a Button shop....

  • Amy16/03/2011 at 05:00

I'm mostly curious as to how much their access fee per race will be in 2012. Although in this time of "the Olympics cost how much?" it looks like Melbourne will be my only race next year.

My friend was flicking through bridal magazines in a cafe when the guy behind the counter came over and asked who was getting married, then asked if she needed a caterer and after she said no he asked if she needed a cake. which she did. So because weddings are not his day job, just a hobby, she has ended up with a very reasonable price on an amazing croquembouche cake. Masterchef has a lot to answer for.

Niiiiice! Good on the guy for stepping up, good on your friend for getting an amazing deal. :D Now if only someone would do that here... ;)

I wasn't sure I'd trust a random guy to make a croquembouche, they look difficult, but he had a portfolio of photos of other ones he'd made before and they did look good.

  • Journeyer16/03/2011 at 10:19

HAHA! :) Our families would have none of it, though. :D

My ideal wedding would be me, the groom, one bridesmaid, one groomsman, and our parents to watch. The end. I don't want people at my wedding. I don't like people. Plus people cost money and that would take money out of my Monaco honeymoon budget.

  • Alianora La Canta16/03/2011 at 10:20

My friend was flicking through bridal magazines in a cafe when the guy behind the counter came over and asked who was getting married, then asked if she needed a caterer and after she said no he asked if she needed a cake. which she did. So because weddings are not his day job, just a hobby, she has ended up with a very reasonable price on an amazing croquembouche cake. Masterchef has a lot to answer for.

    That's fantastic :)

  • Amy16/03/2011 at 10:20

Well I’ve been flat out on book number three, which is coming out six months earlier than I’d thought, plus someone is trying to tempt me back into full time employment. But I’m going to a Shell shindig tomorrow night (Mr C and Christine may even be in attendance!) and have a couple of things lined up that will be going on the blog soon. Been so busy recently that by the time I have the opportunity to write about anything the moment has passed…

not much to share. only one of us is allowed to attend. so i've drawn that short straw.

Surprising that it's business as usual for some Japanese companies

morning = a chat about social media (been there, done that)

afternoon = science museum (been there done that)

we asked to be excused, but they were kind of insistent. they won't tell us who's going to be there (i didn't know stuart would be). all very weird.

I can only go to the dinner because I’m booked in elsewhere for the two days.

Tush, Mr C! You’re going on a jolly and quite a lot of it will be interesting. Obviously they want you to write about them – but hey ho, they have a good product. It’s not like you’re going to stay at Idi Amin’s house!

  • Christine16/03/2011 at 16:52

I wonder how many callers to Sidepodcast pretend to be Madonna and how many pretend to be in Mission Control. Gotta be one or the other.

  • Pat W16/03/2011 at 17:27

I'm surprised you remember that. No one else took notice around here. :) Date was decided long ago. We've made our decision on the church - we'll book it on Saturday. We'll decide on the reception once we've seen the other bidder on Saturday too. It's a crucial weekend for our wedding. :)

Oh wow, congrats. I must have missed that before. :)

well, we kinda said yes. although what we said yes to wasn't this.

i'll blog all about it once it's over, i expect to spend about 15 mins discussing social media with people who just learned what a hashtag is. then i'll leave.

    I have had an idea!!

    (uh oh)

We'll be doing some of our regular race preview stuff ahead of each GP, but following on from Lukeh's most excellent BE POSITIVE post, I wondered about the idea of having a different person do a positive preview ahead of each race - be it because they have been there and it's awesome, or they just particularly like the track, or the championship is hotting up, whatever.

Just an idea. Shoot me down in flames or set up a wiki page for volunteers. Either way :)

I've spent a lot of my life not doing things. This year I've decided to go for it even though I'm nervous. Trying to "feel the fear & do it anyway" before I really am too old. Going with Bassano helps, he's good at encouraging adventure (especially with Guinness).

Well neither of those two offer nothing new and F1 2010 is the first in the series, so maybe that helped?

My mate buys FIFA every year and it's the same controls, mostly the same teams, some gimmicks and slightly improved graphics. Hardly worth shelling out £50 IMO

From what I have seen of GT5 it's very much an add on pack to GT4.

the online play was disappointing. hardly got into the game.

f1 has been more fun in arcade mode. starting from the back, getting to the front. it made some of the tilke tracks bearable.

For me FIFA has gone forward more and more each year. Compare it to 4 years ago and it was struggling behind Pro Evo. EA have really made big changes to the game and that's why it's the biggest footballing game again after falling behind Pro Evo for a decade or so.

I can see what you mean with the yearly update type of thing but to me it's always worth it with FIFA because it feels like a better game each year to play. It'll be the same with F1 2011 and I'm more than happy to welcome a similar game made better with further development and whatnot.

GT5 was just a disappointment full stop though.

Cool. While I see the improvements, I don't play these games enough to shell out for the new one so I tend to stick with the old one and change every 3 years or so. The PC versions have been very dull until 11 though - there's definitely more effort put into the console version.

Yeah definitely. It's a far bigger market for them though on consoles, most football fans and general gamers wouldn't dare think of playing a football game like that, or most sports games, with a keyboard and mouse even though you can get control pads. The only major sports title that really sells like crazy I can think of related is obviously Football Manager but on the reverse that can hardly do amazing on consoles because of the type of game it is.

  • Amy16/03/2011 at 22:14

That struggled on the XBox simply because they couldn't find a logical way to make it work as well on console as PC/Mac/PSP. Though there always used to be LMA Manager...

Yeah I remember playing it on the Xbox but it was a pain to control, a real pain. LMA was good though, just not as in depth. Thought it had a nice slot in the market between pick up and play and proper sitting there for hours but shame it got canned :(
