We made it through the weekend with flying colours. Well maybe not flying colours, but it is Monday and this week we're likely going to hit some kind of podcast producing record. Watch out for the return of Sidpodpanel, the penultimate F1 Debrief before racing begins in anger, and the chat we had with Joe on Sunday. Christine has more season preview F1 Digest episodes in the works, and that's before we do the whole live thing again next Sunday.

Enough about us though, here's the things we're keeping an eye on today:

  • More testing in Jerez from McLaren, Brawn GP, Renault and Williams. We were concerned yesterday that McLaren may have wasted their Sunday, but it seems a day of rest is all part of the grand plan. Whether that's a winning plan, is still anyone's guess.
  • According to Autosport, Bernie's spoken to the Guardian and said F1 teams are taking more personnel to races than last year. This is opposite of the cost-cutting Max is trying to achieve, so is Bernie winding the man up, or highlighting the fact Formula 1 teams aren't trying hard enough?

Admittedly things are pretty quiet beyond those stories, however there are a couple of blog posts worth highlighting. Ollie has a feature on Alex Zanardi, F1 Wolf ranks the teams while Alex notes that McLaren might be listening.

It's all good stuff, and if there are other posts we've missed, let us know in the comments.

there may a reason for taking more people to races. there is no testing during season, all the test runs will be done on Fridays and Saturdays of race weekends. there may be much more work to be done over the race weekends as it used to be. but more people in races does not mean there are no job cuts back in the in factory. also, with no season testing there is no travelling a shipping of all the equipment to the tests

just a theory, may be totally wrong

that is a good theory. seems very likely.

any guesses as to why bernie decided to mention it?

the feed has been updated. itunes is a law unto itself, and usually falls about 12 hours behind the feed updating.

if you subscribe though, the show is there.

    F1 Technical article about KERS

A good read (I'm not sure how much is new info though) which made me think - if BrawnGP choose not to use KERS and have a good season, will the other teams who developed KERS protest and say that it's all a bit unfair?

perhaps to stir the debate ... also is it a coincidence that this came out around the same times as the stories about Toyota being very close to pulling out from F1 ?

McLaren measuring performance from their diffuser?

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/mclarenbackend-jpg

Perhaps using it as a reference point to make improvements?

  • Journeyer16/03/2009 at 09:10

    Test updates:

Barrichello (Brawn) 1:18.398 <-- LAP RECORD pace

    Alonso (Renault) +1.256

    Rosberg (Williams) +1.385

    Hamilton (McLaren) +1.682

McLaren's pace has improved relative to Brawn, but it's still dead last. I hope they haven't tried on their super wing yet. If they have... well, this doesn't look good for them, does it?

  • Journeyer16/03/2009 at 09:18

Perhaps using it as a reference point to make improvements?

Could be... it depends on which version of the rear end it's on. It's either getting baseline data from the old rear end, or already measuring data for the new one.

Either way, its contents will tell the engineers whether or not they'll be competitive in Australia and Malaysia.

  • F1Wolf16/03/2009 at 09:26

Barrichello (Brawn) 1:18.398 <– LAP RECORD pace

... and close to Senna's best time on the older shorter version of Jerez track:

    Pole - 1990-Spain - Ayrton Senna - McLaren/Honda - 1'18.387

  • Journeyer16/03/2009 at 09:38

… and close to Senna’s best time on the older shorter version of Jerez track:

so much for the new rules slowing them down, then. let's hope it will actually produce more overtaking... :|

Have to wonder why DC himself isn't ploughing money in to keep it afloat? I would guess that were it is situated isn't a hot-spot for passing trade and it is a bit out of the way for most F1 fans to make a trip to see essentially half-a-dozen cars.

He needs F1 to look like it's handling the recession well to encourage more people to put money in. Which in Bernie's lexicon means making it look like F1 doesn't need to make any changes to thrive in current conditions.

But then I realised that EA signed him to some kind of deal last year so it's actually a serious point I suppose. nevertheless the game is sounding superb, it's great to see they're looking at the hardcore f1 racing fans but still going to allow a more casual style of play should you not be interested in the full realistic setup. But for me I certainly am so it's sounding superb. They're really taken every aspect into Formula 1 I feel and they're such a good, good developer with racing games so I'm more than excited for this.

All that is why Codies are the best in the business. I can't think of another developer that would go that deeply into the various nuances of F1. As much as I'm looking forward to the game, I'm happy to give them all the time they need to get it right.

More news about toyota and the threat of pulling out:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73731

So they've had a big budget cut after the Honda decision and Yamashina believes the bosses back in Japan will only eb happy with at least a win. He did say that they'd have to cut costs again next year which suggests Toyota may go on past 2009 but I still can't see them sticking around after 09. But we'll see I suppose.

  • Dirty Scarab16/03/2009 at 12:11

same principle as the cage in the second picture here:

Who are they competing against? I don't know, Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, the rest of the grid? ;)

granted. and if honda exited immediately after that, with their heads held high, then job done.

who's going to remember the win after this winter?

If Toyota doesn't win, the history books will say that Honda won raceS, plural (counting their 1960s run). Toyota won nothing.

If we're talking on that level, Renault's rival is Toyota. My gut is telling me that if one of them has to be leave, it will be the less successful one. The more successful team will stay for 2010 and beyond.

I forgot about Renault. Good point though, I think if Toyota win one and Renault at least two/three, I think in that case they will both stay. But really, I can't see Toyota winning sadly.

Cool cheers. Basically I'm just a but clueless as to when to go there and how long to stay for. I've got full weekend tickets but I'm not sure when is best to on Firday, or even if Thursday night is better. Obviously campsite costs have to be taken into account as well. Also, a lot of campsites seem to give you Sunday night for free so is it worth staying, and, more importantly, will there be a coach to get us back to the train station on Monday morning!

To answer those questions: If you want to catch FP1, you need to be super early on Friday or like you say, on a Thursday. Traffic is a nightmare, so if you don't make FP1, you wanna go a bit later to miss the queues.

Sunday night again is a nightmare to get out of the circuit, so if you've got the option to stay, you probably might as well. I don't know about coaches, though.

Well neither me nor my brother drive so it looks like getting the train and the shuttle coach to get there. I will have to make some enquiries before booking a campsite though cause I don't want to end up stranded there on Monday. I think the coaches go in a different entrance so they should avoid the worst of the traffic which is always nice :)

Can anyone recommend a campsite? I've got a couple in mind but it's always best to hear about them first hand.

It's mainly in terms of the logistics of it all. I don't drive so I will be getting the train/shuttle bus to the circuit, but I'm not really sure when it is best to go down and how long to stay for. I'm also looking at campsites so any recommendations would be great.

Massa won the race because Hamilton got penalised (and most people thought that was unfair on Lewis). Can you imagine the backlash if Massa had gone on to become WDC? All you would have heard were stories about him not deserving it...

Hate is a strong word in that scenario, more like lucky

but massa was miles away. had nothing to do with him.

They can take until 2011 if it means they get it right. Nothing sucks more than a game that's rushed out onto the shelves with bugs and major flaws in it...

I'm looking at you, Lock On, Combat Flight Simulator 3, Spirit of Speed, Grand Prix 3 and Grand Prix Legends!

  • chris evans16/03/2009 at 19:52

    Wait, a Wii version???

In a blog post a while back I invented a new control scheme for an F1 game on Wii.

You wear a special pair of 'Wii socks' that have a slot for a Wiimote in each so you can control the throttle and break with motion. Then you have a wheel shell similar to the Mario Kart one, but two remotes fit in it so you can use the two B buttons on the back for gear changes.

Yes, you need 4 remotes for it, but I think it could catch on.

    Damn, why aren't I a game designer?

  • lou16/03/2009 at 19:53

has anyone else seen the pics of the Brawn GP driver’s helmets on f1live? one thing that grabbed my attention was this - http://twurl.nl/qir73f it could be me… but it looks like there is some faint text on it saying ‘Seiko’. What do you guys think - have they painted over an old helmet (they used to sponsor honda i believe) or could they possibly be a sponsor (although why on earth they wouldn’t show the sponsor i don't know)

yeah was kinda just looking for an explanation really... cause i'm so tired it doesn't seem to make any sense to me.

  • lou16/03/2009 at 20:46

As its engraved in so leaves a mark where it was?

i've no idea... i just assume all the markings for sponsors would have been engraved/stuck on/ shown in the same way, therefore meaning that the 'H' would have shown through the same way the 'Seiko' does. I'm prob thinking too much into it. but it just confused me.

mark hughes highlights some limitations of CFD in his analysis of macca's problems:

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is capable of predicting this, but not with 100% reliability."

"If the problem area is sufficiently intricate, there may not be enough computing power to model it accurately."

Would a wind tunnel be able to?

The talk of F1 09 earlier has made me think how I'll miss driving Montreal and Mangy-Cours. I know some don't like Magny-Cours, dunno if that's for the actual racing (or non-racing) but I think it's a fantastic track to drive. I' say the same for Imola, though that's been gone for a few years and very unlikely to return.

I'm really looking foward to Valencia, last sector there especially. Singapore also of course. Depending on when it comes out, we may get to drive Abu Dhabi before Kimi and co.

Also if you go on their site read the t&c it'll re-iterate what I said on the phone about the place. As far as transport is concerned, let me know, if we can help we will.

Well I think that's what they're after. Not going down the road of medals, bernie does this all the time though, spouts off some hair-brained idea and everybody thinks about it then comes up with a change, which I guess is all he ever wanted from this.

Apparently the rumour of a delay until 2010 came form someone who's friend is a sound engineer at Codemasters. Of all the people for a rumour to come from in a games studio, a sound engineer isn't the most reliable of sources.

Chris, do you enjoy games journalism, or do you find that having to write about a game is a bit boring when all you want to do is play it?

No, I love it! If anything it's better when you do want to be playing the game because you can really get into the writing! I generally keep a notepad or a laptop nearby when I'm playing but just to make quick notes. I rarely start writing properly until I've finished the game.

It only gets dull when you have to play really crappy games. But then that usually gives you more to write about so I guess it balances out!

They still haven’t confirmed exactly what platforms it will be on, just that it will be ‘multi platform’. Whatever it is released on though, I wouldn’t recommend the Wii version over anything else!

I'll probably get the Wii version. I'd like the PC version but will wait and see what specs are required, I have a feeling it could be hefty..

If DiRT and GRID are anything to go by it will almost certainly be a very graphics heavy game, but very pretty for it.

    So pretty, but rubbish.

I really like those! Very arcadey but fun all the same.

They have promised it will be for more of a sim though so don't worry too much!

At last! I found an Formula 1 2001 season DVD. I had to buy the Formula 1 2002 PS2 game to get it, buy hey, it's dirt-cheap, so I bought the game to get the DVD.

The mailman can't send it quickly enough... :)

Hope it's as advanced as Grand Prix Legends was.

    Still play that today.

From what they have said it's going to be as advanced as you want it to be. All of the 'realism' options should be scaleable so you can scale the sim/arcade balance to your tastes. If it was anyone other than Codies making it I'd be worried, but they know racing better than any onther developers.

Unfortunately, codemasters also produced Micromachines... :D

I suppose they're better than EA though. Need for Speed: F1 ;)

EA have done F1 games. F1 2002 and F1 Career Challenge. I enjoyed them, especially Career Challenge.

I wouldn't mind if Polyphony got the license. Although they might have poor damage then.

Knowing PD, there wouldn't be any damage :D
