Here we are then, hideous Thursday, although today is quite cool as it's the anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. I know we have quite a lot of Sidepodspace fans, so that one is for you. Here are some other things we're talking about:

  • Although it is behind the paywall, there's a fantastic (and worth the subscription alone for this month) article by Jonathan Noble with rumours and speculation about who could move where and why. After months of politics, it is a breath of fresh air that silly season is beginning. Who would have thought it?
  • Yesterday we discussed the Trulliometer, and today it has swung a little lower, with Trulli suggesting his team need to make a big step forward, in fact a giant leap (for mankind?) to try and close up the gap to their rivals. At least they can always console themselves by knowing they're doing better than BMW.
  • Finally, I just wanted to bring the transcripts up again, as we had a great takeup of volunteers, with not one, but two transcripts completed already. If you're interested in lending a hand, you can find out more information on the wiki - thanks to everyone who's signed up already.

That's all for now. We're one step closer to the weekend, which is always a good thing, and as per usual, I will see you in the comments.

I didn't think it was now. So have you memorised your Highway Code and all the other stuff you need to know?

Does your driving instructor's car have KERS or a double diffuser?

Argh, rubbish. I knew it, it gets delayed on every night i'm home and then as soon as i go out they launch. Nasa aren't in my good books right now

Pah, just go on the offensive. Get in the car, ask him what fuel weight you have, and which compound tyres are on today.

  • Steven Roy16/07/2009 at 00:02

i've not done all the theory no...my teacher knows this though :) i've very very nervous though :(

Just look at all the bad drivers you have ever seen and remember that all of them passed at one point. If they can do it so can you. Besides you have driven a kart. A car is easy after that. It is only one extra pedal to deal with and you don't need to be fast.

  • lou16/07/2009 at 00:02

You need left foot braking to be a rally driver.

It makes your life a lot easier. Imagine when you drive yourself to Goofwood for the first time and you have to deal with the grass car parks. A little bit of left foot braking will make your life so much easier and hand brake turns make parking and sliding through gates easier.

  • Paul16/07/2009 at 00:21

A lot of people get into trouble the first time they drive on grass because there is no grip and no traction.

i don't read them on a regular basis but if there is something i want to find out about, whether it happened in a race or a piece of news i often check the transcripts for info. Sometimes it's easier than trying to find it on autosport or f1.com or somewhere.

Good night Lou. Remember very few people have huge crashes in their first driving lesson so you will probably be OK.

I made a note in my show list

Make a note that I need to remind Mr C of something, just so long as I can remember.

  • Steven Roy16/07/2009 at 01:04

you have a list? i don't even have a list... at least not for shows anyhow.

I have a few things. I got fed up typing out the reminder about titles and podcast guesses every show so I copied it into a Word doc and just paste it now. Then a few weeks ago you made a comment about not plugging the phone number and live shows so I made a not to check that it is done or remind you. There are a few other things but spread out it only amounts to about half a page.

I still have the writing competion for Joe on there though.

  • Steven Roy16/07/2009 at 01:05

so not a good time to mention that after my first driving lesson i came home and cried and said "Ill never be able to do this!" my instructor was my impatient dad though, i think this was key to the problem. On the other hand i passed both practical tests first time and its now 8 years later and i cant believe i found it hard. Everybody gets there in the end! Go Lou!

Ian Phillips was in fine form... doesn't sound like he's keen to rejoin FOTA as he criticised some of the changes they proposed to make for qualifying.

Neighbours is really dragging out this death thing. Come on soap tragedy, brighten my Thursday!

I think Neighbours was responsible for my favorite soap death but it might have been Home and Away (with you each day). One of the characters died when a cassette tape got lose in the car and slid underneath the break pedal and then the car drove into a lake.

Actually now I think about it was Home and Away (with you each day) because I think it was Alf's wife who then came back later to haunt him or wasn't dead but was just in a coma.

Anyway I liked it because I felt it packed in an important life lesson - always put your tapes back in their boxes.

  • F1Wolf16/07/2009 at 08:53

    Also Toro Rosso...

that drop was a bit more ugly though :-)

Actually now I think about it was Home and Away (with you each day) because I think it was Alf's wife who then came back later to haunt him or wasn't dead but was just in a coma.

yeah that was Ailsa, when she woke up she started harrasing him because she'd heard him talk about removing her life support while she was in a coma and interpreted that as he didn't love her. Then a few years later she had a heart attack. Then he got a brain tumour and saw her everywhere. I have been watching Home and Away for 15 years, this scares me.

Fair enough. The drivers I normally dislike are the ones that are too old and are hanging on, when a fresh new guy could be there and driving faster.

I wanted Le Seb to get the drive this year. It's a shame it didn't work out, but I'm not very sad because I know that these days a driver does not have to be in F1 to have a succesful and lucrative career. I watch a few different series so I know I'll see him very soon...

To be honest, I won't miss him that much. Near enough every weekend he would complain about the car, how it didn't suit him, BUT! With the dawning of slick tyres this season he would find his form... er, didn't work out really did it?

Because he's French, and they only recently managed to lobby the government in France to allow Red Bull on sale there. It was exactly the same logic applied to Sato and Japan.

He's had the worst run of luck too so it's a bit unfair on him ... a shame he never clicked in F1 but there are a lot of great drivers who failed at F1.

Just shows how poor Champcars must have been if he dominated there and did poorly in F1 though...

Because he’s French, and they only recently managed to lobby the government in France to allow Red Bull on sale there. It was exactly the same logic applied to Sato and Japan.

I refuse to believe Toro Rosso's decision to keep Bourdais on was anything to do with wanting this shift cans in France. Bourdais, whose popularity probably rivals that of Christian Albers on a good day.

Despite flashes of promise last season, before being crippled by bad luck in Monza and Spa, he was overshadowed by Vettel. This year, on what he claimed would showcase his talents, he should be taking the lead from Buemi. But it hasn't happened. He's got no excuses really.

No doubt he'll do well in Le Mans or other tin-top racing series though.

So why the heck would a Red Bull team consider Sato ahead of a junior driver from the program? They are short of cash, you know that!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/07/2009 at 09:56

Joe Saward gives a very good analysis on Le Seb's career to date

I must admit, I haven't watched any Champ Cars for a very long time so I don't know what the truth is, but Joe's analysis is interesting to say the least...

No, I meant why would Toro Rosso consider between Sato and Bourdais when they have a pool of young driver talent within their ranks?

  • Dank16/07/2009 at 10:09

No, I meant why would Toro Rosso consider between Sato and Bourdais when they have a pool of young driver talent within their ranks?

Well they did, sort of. Buemi came up from GP2 remember? And he was the one with most experience at that point.

The Red Bull Driver Programme isn't a vast list of drivers to choose from. There were nine in it last year who are in the lower echelons of racing and with the years of experience from the likes of Sato or the supposedly going to get better Bourdais to choose from, it's a bit of a no-brainer, despite money being involved.

Toro Rosso have nothing to lose bringing Alguersuari in for the rest of the season. Let him gain confidence behind the wheel of an F1 car and see what he can do next season.

any truth in the suggestion that loeb might get some seat time too?

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 10:15

OK, quick straw poll for all the working folk out there:

Do you innovate at work (whether by improving process tools or developing tools)? If so, why and how often? If not, why not?

Please do answer, if you can. I am in need of some honest opinions.

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 10:15

i suspect there could be something in that rumor. we shall see at season's end.

  • me16/07/2009 at 10:17

Do you innovate at work (whether by improving process tools or developing tools)? If so, why and how often? If not, why not?

yes. every day. why? because every change involves some form of innovation, otherwise there would be no point in making changes.

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 10:18

what about craft tuesday? (i forget the official title #sorryamy).

  • Dank16/07/2009 at 10:20

any truth in the suggestion that loeb might get some seat time too?

It's a strange one. When he drove the RB4 last season in testing he took the team by surprise by instantly being on the pace and could have been even better if he braked a fraction later going into the corners.

I don't think he'll make it into F1, but, I wouldn't like to rule it out entirely. The sport needs someone like Loeb in it so personally I'd enjoy it if they'd give him a go, but at 35 he's no spring chicken.

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 10:20

But on a serious note, we hear a lot of people here at work saying they want to innovate but they can't because they still have their actual work to finish.

Jake was always going to be a star though, you could see it when he did the NFL. It was just a matter of which sport the BBC put him on.

  • lou16/07/2009 at 11:43

exactly! :) Jake wasn't exactly known for his awesome sports presenting skills before this, now i wouldn't want anyone else to present f1 coverage :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/07/2009 at 11:43

Who's better? Croft.... but he wont get the job.

how many applications did the bbc have for that job? was it 27 or more?

there must be someone better, unless you're suggesting the uk is devoid of talented commentators.

Crofty, Ben Edwards & John Watson, Martin Haven, Toby Moody, John Hindhaugh, heck even Charlie Cox!

  • Jon Waldock16/07/2009 at 11:43

my first lesson went a litle like "oh my god I'm going so fast" "you're going 15km/h..."

I remember on my first lesson, my instructor drove us to this industrial estate, we stopped on the side of the road and I had no idea about anything at all then he turned and said 'OK now we'll swap seats and you'll drive' to my response of 'WHAT?!!!'

    Ahh... uneducated times.

the first time I stopped at a stop sign I stalled, and my dad screamed at me "why didn't you put the clutch in"

Would an F1 governed by this man be even worth watching? I fear he would be worse than Mosley.

James Allen says it best on his blog:

On my way back from the airport on Sunday night my taxi driver was talking about Mosley this and Ecclestone that and I asked him if he was interested in other sports. He was. So then I asked him if he could name the regulatory and commercial bosses of any of those sports. He could not. These larger than life characters have actually taken over the limelight from the drivers this season...

    That's still only two floors!

theres no stairs! Only the fire exit and you can't go in it, only out it.

I think they remodelled the two-storey entrance foyer at some stage to create more office space. At least this building has a basement, at the hospital they called it Lower Ground. It was so a basement, for 8 hours a day I was in a rom with no windows.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/07/2009 at 14:04

I wish there was stairs because they're the worst lifts in the world. I could get to my floor and back 20 times if there was stairs in the time it takes for the lift to arrive.

  • Scott in Italy in Italy16/07/2009 at 14:07

theres no stairs! Only the fire exit and you can't go in it, only out it.

so if there's a fire, does everyone take the lift?

I wish there was stairs because they're the worst lifts in the world. I could get to my floor and back 20 times if there was stairs in the time it takes for the lift to arrive.

I guess if you are scared of lifts you're not invited in?

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 14:09

I guess if you are scared of lifts you're not invited in?

Unless you worked on the ground floor which holds Human Resources + the cafe, you'd be pretty stuck.

  • Christine16/07/2009 at 14:09

Unless you worked on the ground floor which holds Human Resources + the cafe, you'd be pretty stuck.

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 14:09

so if there's a fire, does everyone take the lift?

you can get down the fire stairs. The frequent fire drills make me glad I don't work on level 15 :P

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 14:11

Ah, the cafe. What more do you need?

The executive salary to be able to afford their food :( It's ridiculously overpriced.

you can get down the fire stairs. The frequent fire drills make me glad I don't work on level 15 :P

so that means you can get into the stairs right? so you can take the stairs down levels, just not up?

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 14:17

so that means you can get into the stairs right? so you can take the stairs down levels, just not up?

each floor has a door that you can open from both sides, so you can go up and down the stairs between work-levels, but the door at ground level only opens from the inside, apparently its a security thing, but we've been robbed via the fire stairs twice in the year I've worked there :D

  • Nick16/07/2009 at 14:19

Ferrari and mclaren getting quick is good news for brawn.

They can get the jump on RBR BGP with kers at the start. the red bulls struggle to overtake, especially Vettel, where as the brawns seem to be better at it.

  • Scott in Italy in Italy16/07/2009 at 14:20

  • Amy16/07/2009 at 15:00

more really really boring. I always get vodka and cranberry juice. Sometimes I'll spice it up by having a bay breeze ;) I also like passionfruit vodka with apple juice but most bars don't seem to have passionfruit vodka.

    Have you tried anything else?

I have tried many many drinks in my time but I'm not a huge fan of the taste of alcohol full stop. I don't like wine, an I don't like 99% of spirits. Oddly enough in my uni days I was quite a tequila fan but because of that now I can't look at the stuff.

My favourite: Jagermeister and coke ...yum

Well I'm not doing anything over the summer so thats my break. I've been doing this course the past two years and have worked all the other time. I refused to continue at work this summer I needed a break. I'll probably do the "top up" course which turns the foundation degree into a full degree.

    But YAY! ! :D

Nothing to read into, Jenson was faster and it wasn't a team order...

he really, really talks him through it doesn't he.

  • lou16/07/2009 at 16:07

Contraversial radio by brawn there... probably why Rubens was unhappy

not really... he just said, if you can't pick up the pace you need to let Jenson have a go' he didn't say Rubens had to let Jenson pass, just that he needed to improve lap times and stuff.

  • Nick16/07/2009 at 16:09

Ross effectivly told Rubens he would be finishing behind Jenson

..and thats just the radio we heard.

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 16:12

..and thats just the radio we heard.

I heard it differently. He told Rubens to pick up the pace, or else he'd have to give a chance to Jenson. He gave Rubens a chance.

  • lou16/07/2009 at 16:14

Ross effectivly told Rubens he would be finishing behind Jenson

i disagree. It wasn't an order, it was just informing Rubens of the situation and giving him a chance. If anything that shows the Brawn want Rubens to do well...

I think thats the key to why rubens was upset. And what he said in the interview... talking about championships. Ross has decided winning Jenson the drivers title is the priority

  • Nick16/07/2009 at 16:26

I think thats the key to why rubens was upset. And what he said in the interview... talking about championships. Ross has decided winning Jenson the drivers title is the priority

Hmmm...It would make sense to do that as well given how the team need a sponsor and Rubens has apparently been trying to get a drive at Williams

  • lou16/07/2009 at 16:30

I think thats the key to why rubens was upset. And what he said in the interview... talking about championships. Ross has decided winning Jenson the drivers title is the priority

you got all that from one small piece of radio? fair enough i suppose, i disagree though.

Personally i don't think there was anything in Rubens' fury after the race except not understanding what had happened with the pitstop.. look at it from his perspective, you sit in the pits for what seems like a longish pitstop and assume because you've been there for so long that you have enough fuel to finish the race and so maybe get on the podium. You radio in to the pits to confirm your thoughts and hear 'sorry we messed up the pitstop you'll need to pit again'. Those words aren't exactly going to fill you with joy, so he stops again and finishes lower than he should have done because of a team mistake. He did everything he could and was hindered by the team, which is basically what he said after the race. He didn't want to go back to the team because all he would get was excuses which don't really help anyone. He was talking about the team and how if they kept making these mistakes (he was referring to their mistake last time he was in the lead) then there would be no way they would be able to hold onto the championships. basically - this is our championship to loose, and if we continue this way, we will loose them both.

well that's the way i took it anyway.

  • Lukeh16/07/2009 at 16:33

well that's the way i took it anyway.

Now that makes a lot more sense to me. 100% agree with that. It was, quite bluntly, a bad day at the office and Rubens reacted in the wrong fashion is all.

Although it was nice to see a blunt interview rather than the usual team pr via the drivers. If you watch the interview, even Nicola Roberts' jaw nearly dropped from what he said :P

  • lou16/07/2009 at 16:34

Although it was nice to see a blunt interview rather than the usual team pr via the drivers. If you watch the interview, even Nicola Roberts' jaw nearly dropped from what he said :P

    who is Nicola Roberts?

  • Nick16/07/2009 at 16:34

I dont think Rubens would get so upset about a pitstop mistake though, he has been in F1 long enough to know they happen, and they havent made him shout about it untill now.

We saw by the way he drove all the way to the line before he let Michael what he thinks of team orders.

Between the Interview and that Audio thats what i infer out of it.

Sorry if i dont make any sense, but its just my theory. hope thats ok.

  • Alianora La Canta16/07/2009 at 16:39

A lot of people get into trouble the first time they drive on grass because there is no grip and no traction.

    Depends what you mean by “trouble”. ;-) {Comment #72}

lou, it could be worse - according to F1 Racing (May 2006 edition) Jenson Button once went with friends in a group of three cars to the seaside and attempted to park on the grass car park. The catch was that the grass had dew on it. The other two cars went spinning, missing each other by a small distance, while Jenson's car picked up speed on the grass. The only thing that stopped him going off a cliff was a little gravel path just before the cliff edge. As Jenson said, "My girlfriend wasn't impressed!"

I am sure you will manage to avoid an error of that type, which will surely put you in good stead with your driving instructor and have the added bonus of being something you picked up quicker than the driver most likely to be 2009 champion :)

  • lou16/07/2009 at 16:39

Nicola is Brawn's communication manager yeah :) she is the lady who we've been thinking has replaced Jules recently at races. However she's always been around, i saw her in some old photos the other day. She does PR and press for the team i believe, so she is often seen behind the drivers when they give interviews after the race :)

I think keeping them separate would be better.

If I could innovate I would probably try. There's not much innovation to be done with moving stock out of a room and filling up cabinets really, plus I tend to do stuff that other are too lazy to do. I shouldn't really, not my responsibility, but I try my hardest to make things easier no matter how mindnumbing it can be.

I tried a lot of times in my previous workplace, including the revolutionary thought that the people using the Asian section of the library might appreciate it if that section was sorted occasionally. Typically, I'd come up with a new idea every couple of weeks, but sometimes I'd get a burst of several good ideas in the same week. Put simply, the improvements were needed to make customers happier, enable more and better stuff to be done and, in theory, please the people supervising my workplace (because a place with more customers is always a good thing - you'd think).

Got sacked because my co-workers wanted to pretend to work instead of working, and having people who actually worked (and improved their workplace) made maintaining the pretence really, really difficult. (They also did some stuff that broke some laws, but it's probably best not to discuss that here).

In practical terms I've updated spreadsheets I'd inherited so that more than one person understands them, and tried to smooth out the handling of invoices coming in..

When I was working in a warehouse I was repeatedly amazed at how lazy people were. I was always looking for little jobs to do when things were quiet. Admittedly this was to stop myself from going insane rather than any sense of innovation.

and besides, rubens might not be at brawn next year, so what team Virgin is sponsoring may not be so important...

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:14

rubens is going to space. rubens wins!

you don't need a pa to wave you off. that's what kids are for.

you do need a pa if you're planning to be a businessman when the driving gigs dry up.

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 17:16

you probably need to not employ the unmotivated in the first place.

well, they're motivated to WORK. but not to innovate. and therein lies the difference.

i'm looking for a solution that's feasible to implement given what's available and my scope of influence.

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 17:17

and FWIW, I do have a budget, but it's not much of one.

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:17

Jules has been Jenson's PA for years.. long before the airline thing (is that still happening btw?)

i believe so. i wasn't to do with the racing team anyhow.

  • Lukeh16/07/2009 at 17:17

Oh I meant to say the other day, past week or two I've started reading jackie Stewart's autiobiography. It's absolutely awesome so far, was nearly in tears when I was reading his recap of memories with his brother Jimmy and the funeral :(

  • Pat W16/07/2009 at 17:17

The Open makes for nice background noise when working on things. Strangely relaxing.

Listening for Peter Alliss to swear again?

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:17

Jackie's book is brilliant, although it does taper off a bit towards the end. Still, a very good read, and not your typical F1 bio-fluff.

  • Pat W16/07/2009 at 17:20

driving is soooo much fun! :) i didn't crash or anything... :)

See we told you, nothing to worry about. :-)

  • Pat W16/07/2009 at 17:22

I don't get why the UK went metric but you still use miles. *Googles to find out how much that is in km/h*

Ah. 50. Stupid memory should have retained that calculation by now, I know I've worked it out countless times.

[sweeping generalisation] Old people like complaining. [/sweeping generalisation]

    How dare the BBC not include last years race in their classic Hungary selection. Do they not recall that it was the greatest race of the year? {Comment #499}

Probably because the only bit worth seeing was at the end, and they're bound to cover it in the qualifying show anyway...

  • Alianora La Canta16/07/2009 at 17:24

you probably need to find an innovator to lead others then. someone who will be motivated about whatever it is you do and can at least push change onto the unmotivated.

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 17:27

    eek!

  • Pat W16/07/2009 at 17:31

I have tried many many drinks in my time but I'm not a huge fan of the taste of alcohol full stop. I don't like wine, an I don't like 99% of spirits. Oddly enough in my uni days I was quite a tequila fan but because of that now I can't look at the stuff.

I can't do spirits. Well I can manage a small vodka, JD or Southern Comfort with Coke, but not many.

Can't get my head around not liking wine. Everyone likes wine. Unfortunately it gets me plastered now more than it ever did.

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:33

    i shouldn't laugh but... erm..Jenson a businessman? hehee ;)

that's clearly what he's planning. although can't for the life of me see the appeal.

  • Alianora La Canta16/07/2009 at 17:34

    That’s perhaps a bit extreme, but it does reflect my problem somewhat – when people don’t want to innovate, how do you motivate them to innovate? {Comment #617}

Tip: It helps if someone within the next three levels of line management above them is more interested in innovation than they are. Sadly that wasn't the case where I worked - image was everything to them, and the same dated image at that.

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:35

i thought it was something to do with Honda?

he's planning to run some hondajets if i recall, but they're not due to arrive in europe for at least another 3 years.

they seem to be a niche product too, so he either sticks with them or changes his plans. i can't see how the team bailing from f1 would make any difference.

  • Journeyer16/07/2009 at 17:35

Some people upstairs are interested. But either more people upstairs need to be interested, or they're just too far up to make any impact downstairs.

  • Pat W16/07/2009 at 17:36

Ommmmm. Bit of swearing on the golf there on BBC2.

Oh, when I commented earlier I didn't realise someone actually did swear :-)

  • lou16/07/2009 at 17:36

that's clearly what he's planning. although can't for the life of me see the appeal.

i swear i saw an interview with him once where he said if he didn't do f1 for much longer he'd want to maybe do some other sport, or do triathlons more seriously. i honesly can't see him as a businessman, but if i get to see picks of him in suits more then i suppose that's alright :)

    i’m looking for a solution that’s feasible to implement given what’s available and my scope of influence. {Comment #630}

If you could somehow show them that innovation can be fun, then they'd probably be more interested. Difficult to say more precisely how to effect that without more details about the situation than would perhaps be wise to post on a blog.

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:37

you don't usually buy a range of aircraft and say you're starting a posh airline unless you have a long term plan to make money from doing so.

planes are quite complicated to build.

  • me16/07/2009 at 17:41

So Toro Rosso are getting essentially the exact same upgrade as Red Bull? That should certainly help. Although how strong the Ferrari engine will be compared to the Renault we shall have to wait and see. So far it proves Renault's is superior in the right car.

It would be good to see them on form again like they were at the end of last season and the beginning of this. Buemi deserves a real car to showcase his talents, as does Alguersuari. He really couldn't have entered that second seat at a better time. Although, AUTOSPORT magazine was reporting that Loeb would drive the car before this season was through. If that really does happen, it'll be immense.

  • James16/07/2009 at 19:47

I think its all down to how efficient the two engines are with the fuel, I remember it being mentioned with Ferrari and Massa in Spain when he was running low on fuels.

  • Scott Woodwiss16/07/2009 at 19:50

It also feels kinda weird seeing McLaren targeting wins now. I guess that such has been the domination from Brawn and Red Bull that we've kinda forgotten what it was like having Macca and Ferrari at the front. What's even more amazing is that fact that that was only just last year.

Agreed it feels weird that McLaren could win a race like it has never happened. What is shows is the engines are fine, it is the cars around them that have made the difference this year.

Agreed it feels weird that McLaren could win a race like it has never happened. What is shows is the engines are fine, it is the cars around them that have made the difference this year.

Plus the fact that both Brawn's and Force India's development strategies have been much more efficient and rewarding compared to McLaren's approach, which was just throw new bits at the car in the hope they actually do something. 9 times out of 10, they didn't. Now they have a diffuser's that's been properly worked on, it's only now they're starting to reap the benefits and see their form return once again.

Plus I thought it was kinda cool to see Massa on the podium again, and I don't even like Ferrari!

  • James16/07/2009 at 19:56

McLaren were desperate to fix the problem and had a scattergun approach of throwing bits on and hoping for improvement, it worked at Bahrain but then didn't in Spain. I feel they were lacking direction, when Ron was in charge they would have waited and done what other teams have done this year.

  • Pat W16/07/2009 at 19:58

I was so happy for Webber I didn't even notice Massa.

  • Scott Woodwiss16/07/2009 at 19:59

And another thing - is it me, or has Toyota been the team doing the least development on their car? I've not seen anything remotely different on it since China/Bahrain or so. Maybe they've come to the conclusion that their previous approach which was to just throw money at the problem and hope everything sorts itself out was wrong and this time not actually spend as much. Trouble is, it's still getting them nowhere.

Mind you, I think McLaren became the new Toyota for a bit until they stopped the scattergun approach. Only with the common sense to actually see what they were doing and stop before they got too ahead of themselves to notice.

Greetings world. Have I missed anything excitining?

Bourdais' suing STR, who are also getting an RBR-style big update, Todt's confirmed his running for FIA president, someone's made a parody song of Rubens' moaning, McLaren think they can win in Hungary, Webber's looking at a new RBR contract and AUTOSPORT magazine's reporting Loeb will drive for STR before the end of the season.

Apart from that, nothing much. ;)

  • Steven Roy16/07/2009 at 20:07

I saw the AUTOSPORT Loeb story. They are also saying that before he drives they may give Hartley a run as well as jimmy Superaguri

I saw the AUTOSPORT Loeb story. They are also saying that before he drives they may give Hartley a run as well as jimmy Superaguri

And Button is in the position to choose any team for 2010. Jenson may as well produce another surprise. Button to Ferrari? Just speculating.

    It got quiet again...

    #sidepodspace

I have been catching up on a few (well a lot) of things including trying to find out when we are going to get some entertainment in space.

Tomorrow (don't know what time yet) The shuttle arrives at the ISS and after the back flip to allow the ISS crew to photograph the underside of the shuttle it will dock. On the last shuttle misson there were some incredible views of the Earth behind the shuttle. Hopefully there will be some areas with no cloud again tomorrow.

Friday is spacewalk 1 day. The Japanese porch is being installed but you know what builders are like. The spacewalk like the other four is scheduled to last 6 and a half hours. This spacewalk invoves transfering loads from the shuttle robotic arm to the main ISS arm. Hope they have a good frip before the shuttle arm lets go.

Sunday is spacewalk 2 day. The worklist for this looks pretty simpe but I assume it involves a lot more than it seems.

Monday has a lot of robotic arm work so could be interesting.

Tuesday is spacewalk 3 day nd the main job is to swap out some of the solar array batteries. These are not only big and heavy (not that heavy matters in space) but have numerous cooling fins which have to be perfectly lined up when installing the new batteries.

Wednesday is another robotic day but using the Japanese arm on the Kibo module.

Thursday is spacewalk 4 day. The rest of the batteries will be swapped out and there will be some cargo containers picked up by the main station arm and handed to the shuttle arm to be packed for return to Earth.

Friday is a day off where the crew can go out for a beer or two.

Saturday is another robotic day. Some experiments from the Japanese Porch will be shifted into the shutle bay and some cargo from the shuttle will be trasferred to the ISS.

Sunday is spacewalk 5 day. They are doing a whole load of stuff I don't understand and installing a wireless camera.

Monday is packing the bags before leabing day. The hatches will be closed at the end of the day.

Tuesday is undocking day and the shuttle will do a flyaround of the ISS to get photos of its new configuration.

Wednesday is a day floating about in space with probably nothing to watch.

Thursday is landing day o at least the first day where they could attempt to land. I am sure that Christine will make sure the landing is on schedule.

If he gets up on the top step there will be THAT flag and THAT song.

It is a commercial space port which a number of companies plan to use. I assume Virgin Galactic will be one of them and probably the first.

Accoring to http://www.americanlemans.com/ quali will be streaming live at speedtv.com from 3pm Eastern on Friday.

Also saw in AUTOSPORT today that ALMS are tryin to only have one prototype an on GT class next season which is a step in the right direction.

It may be right for the ALMS, I'm not convinced it is right for Le Mans itself though.

  • Steven Roy16/07/2009 at 22:23

It may be right for the ALMS, I'm not convinced it is right for Le Mans itself though.

I think Le Mans can cope with more classes but it is hard for anyone to follow a championship with four classes. Best not to dilute the competition and get as few classes as possible.

  • Scott Woodwiss16/07/2009 at 22:23

I think Le Mans can cope with more classes but it is hard for anyone to follow a championship with four classes. Best not to dilute the competition and get as few classes as possible.

They'd need to bring the classes together a bit in performance. I don't like the idea of 50% LMP1 and 50% GT2.

If the championships only have two classes there is no way LM can support the other two by itself although I assume the LMS in Europe will do whatever the 24 does.

  • lou16/07/2009 at 22:26

Yep. The driving is sometimes a bit suspect for my liking though. Banging doors is okay, shoving people off the track is not. At least they race on tracks suited to the cars.

It'll apparently be on BT Vision until January. I don't use that enough.

Says it quietly.. I'm going to watch s2 of Andromeda next week, before it gets removed.

Its amazing, but it keeps you needing to know more.

Its quite rewarding at times but also drives you crazy.

Hmm. I like knowing what's going on. I'd noticed it divides opinion though.

How many series are there? I think 1-4 are available to me.

may depend on who you watch it with. it's a show that generates discussion, you can't just watch it and then go do something else. you have to talk about it.

I should take this opportunity to warn you that watching episodic tv with a member of the opposite sex is a very dangerous thing to do.

Make sure you know what you are getting into before you do it!

Do you innovate at work (whether by improving process tools or developing tools)? If so, why and how often? If not, why not?

Process development, new product development, invent stuff. etc

oops, quote error on my part

  • Steven Roy17/07/2009 at 01:37

That's perhaps a bit extreme, but it does reflect my problem somewhat - when people don't want to innovate, how do you motivate them to innovate?

It has to come from the top of the company. It has to be policy and it has to be pushed. People don't like change and it takes a concerted campaign by management to promote a change of culture from comfortable consistency and unquestioning complacency to make people embrace change and question everything. It cannot be done without management driving it.

Concerted campaign. Hmmm... At least we might be on the right path when it comes to that. That said, I'll need to influence them to push harder than they are now.

  • Steven Roy17/07/2009 at 01:39

that's the easiest answer. but management doesn't have the money (or the will) to pay them for it.

I disagree that people need to be paid to innovate. It is not connected to money. Management need to make it clear that people can contribute and their contribution will be welcomed and encouraged. Most people go with the status quo because it is easy and because that is what they think is expected of them.

  • Journeyer17/07/2009 at 01:41

Hmmm... Steven Roy, you are really making me mull over this one. Very good point, that.

  • Journeyer17/07/2009 at 01:41

Very much agreed on this point.

  • Steven Roy17/07/2009 at 01:48

Very much agreed on this point.

I worked for a company many years ago that went from total complacent compliance to total questioning innovation but it took a few years and started with the whole board of directors going on a one week course.

They then sent all management and supervisors on similar courses then over the next few months everyone else in th company went on a one day course. When I say everyone I mean operators, cleaners, receptionists. Everyone. And everyone had to use the tools they were taught in their normal work.

That was the very first step in culture change and that took 6 months. During the bulk of that time the vast majority whinged about the waste of time money and effort. It probably took 18 months before a comfortable majority bought into it. THe company made incredible strides as a resut.
