Today is apparently the Independence Day of Bahrain, which has less to do with Will Smith defending the planet from aliens and more to do with the kingdom standing on it's own two feet. Very good stuff. Now, onto Formula 1 news. As we were saying in the comments yesterday, December has never been so busy in F1, so we'd best make the most of it.
- Yesterday saw some late night gaming, as the F1 2009 game appeared on the iPod Touch and iPhone. Mr C initially posted some thoughts, and then we got a review from our game expert Lukeh. The lack of racing against other cars is a bit off putting for me, although I don't know why because I always lose.
- Yesterday, Manor finally confirmed they were going to be called Virgin Racing, and signed up di licious to race alongside Timo Glock. That's a pretty good lineup for a new team, and they even have a brilliant video on their new site that is definitely worth a watch.
- The good news is that Campos have confirmed they are still in talks with Hedgehog de la Rosa. I am very keen for the Spaniard to get a drive if only because he has some of the best nicknames in the paddock. If he did get the seat, he would be teammates with Senna, and if you want a reminder of who else has a confirmed seat for next year - check out the wiki page.
That's all for now. Let us know how your week is going and as always, I will see you in and around the comments.
good morning, angels.
holy smokes. mouse battery is running low.
did it even mange a fortnight?
Got about a month out of mine
Heading to bed, night all
Ran it down to 10% before it completely died
[And... gone]
damn you! :)
That's shockingly poor! I couldn't imagine having to change the battery in my mouse even monthly, that's insane! Why doesn't it just sit in a charging dock when you're not using it?
umm. it doesn't have one
I knows. I just think if it eats up battery that fast, they should have made the whole unit rechargeable.
...
...
anyone interested in a magic mouse?
They're just too keen to push things out before they've properly thought about how you're going to actually use them day in day out. It's a shame.
most annoying thing is that you can't pinch/punch, but you can swipe.
it's like owning half an iphone.
How irritating! Stupid not-so-magic mouse.
it's like the david blaine of mice.
It can make batteries disappear
:D
no idea if this is of any use, but an event page for the live party at the weekend:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=236171826010
i think if you sign up it sends you a reminder.
Did you switch it off?
off?
There's a switch on the bottom. You're supposed to switch it off when not in use.
Also, were these the batteries it came with? Try using rechargeables.
oh. ooops.
does it not go to sleep when not in use?
yep, and can do, ta.
Not using the computer?? Heresy!
if it was truly magic it would sense you arent using it and turn itself off
You would think they could make a mouse with a usb connector that wouldn't need batteries
:)
:)
It's as psychic as Derren Brown.
heeh!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80590
Indy 500 moving into the modern world
still one day too many, right?
The whole event will still be spread over most of May. It is weeks too long
night all.
NIght Andy
g'night.
ah.
They have all sorts of stupid things like carburation day. No-on has had a carburettor on their car in decades but there is still a day designed to set them up
how do fans have that much time on their hands?
Mr C my itunes has gone a bit crazy and randomly started downloading the Japan preview digest, I'm assuming this isn't anything to do with you....
it is, my apologies. just delete the duplicates. not sure why japan digest is downloading though?
Beats me. Why would anyone watch practise one weekend when they could watch qualifying for the next two. The who thing is ridiculously drawn out and complicated. It's like they are still in the 1920s and want everyone to have time to get their cars set up perfectly. The teams know the track inside out and they run a spec car. They should be able to do one practise day then do 100.1% of their optimal laptime the next day.
Okay :) I just looked up and was wondering how I'd broken it this time.
I thought it was supposed to 'go to sleep' when not in use and the switch was for travelling, so as not to keep bumping it and keeping it on?
[can't sleep]
Unusual affliction on sidepodcast ;)
I know this feeling :(
I have to get up for work in 5 hours. I hardly feel like I'm in the door.
Do you have a long day again tomorrow?
I do yeah. I wasn't in very long today but I finished stupidly late. I don't like going back onto days, it sets me all out of balance.
Messing about your hours during the week can really screw you up
Sorry mum :P
I have done it a lot. I know the problem and I have never learned not to do it.
Yeah I far prefer doing late nights. You can get so much more done without so many people running about pestering you. Stupid daytime shifts!
I understand that. So long as you are doing the same kind of hours every day though it doesn't take it out of you so much.
Yeah. I'm quite good at giving myself "jetlag"
There is nothing I can say to that that won't result in you calling me mum again.
There is no point risking your health for an employer and be careful driving when you are knackered.
life is too exciting to sleep.
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/12/renault-to-announce-f1-plans-tomorrow/
Has this been spoken about on here yet. The renault buyout? Sounds like Lopez will be Bernies successor to me. Thoughts?
Seems Alison and Bassano who couldn't sleep have both succeeded
my feeling is it seems likely.
james has nailed every angle and given it'll probably have happened by the time it wake up, i figure speculation is a bit unnecessary.
on the bernie replacement theory, that hadn't even occurred to me. i'd hate one venture capital company to be replaced with another though.
:)
It seems like F1 is about to go into revolution. We have Lopez, Branson, and Chad Hurley all commiting heavily into a sport they see as vulnerable because it has yet to embrace the new internet age. These guys are wise, savvy and have a lot of nouse when they see potential in a sinking ship.
I dont care what people think about the following comment, but viva Max Mosely for his foresight!
It was discussed earlier. I have no idea how Bernie's succession will be achieved or who will get the job
Max Mosley had foresight?
I love that these guys are coming in and what that could mean but Max foresaw nothing
i don't think they're here to save f1.
they're here to make massive profits. stuart covered this a little yesterday:
http://www.stuartcodling.com/2009/12/great-time-to-invest-in-f1/
recommended reading. am surprised schumi isn't planning on buying a team.
it's his fault that branson was excluded for so many years :)
He was supposed to be buyig into Brawn a while back but nothing came of it. I find it odd that guys like Webber, Fisichella and Raikkonen set up junior teams to put something back into the sport but the guy who took the most out has done nothing.
good point. that i hadn't considered. i guess he fears competitors.
It's hard to cheat in the junior formulae and he wouldn't have Bernie and Max around allowing him to do things others got banned for
i dunno, nicolas todt's gp2 team was rumoured to have access to a bunch of ferrari data at one point.
I can't imagine what good that would do them although it may add to the questions about Ferrari running their 2007 car on GP2 tyres
So no surprises for guessing Steven is not a max fan. His foresight was of the manufacturers jumping ship.
So the revolution will happen, and of course they are entering for a profit. I cant see anyone nowdays just doing it for the love. even saint Frank sold a portion of Williams earlier.
What i mean is that the new guys will change the way F1 is broadcast. They will make it more interactive and accessable than it is now for we, the fans.
at the time they were dominating the series and i think the suggestion was the gp2 team we're being fed data from f1 practice about track status, weather predictions, etc.
all rumour though.
The motorsport December podcast has mysteriously appeared in my home folder. Nothing points towards my home folder and I certainly haven't put it there. #podcastconfusion
is anyone though? aside from max i guess.
he walked them to the very edge of the gangplank and waited from them to slip. hardly nostradamus is it?
oooh. bassano was having issues too.
nothing to do with us though, right?
i very, very much hope so. but they don't control the content, bernie does.
he walked them to the very edge of the gangplank and waited from them to slip. hardly nostradamus is it?
Please explain. Obviously ive missed something. He gave plenty of chances for them to sort out the budget concerns. By the time it happened it was too late.
No or have you been at my computer young man?
i very, very much hope so. but they don't control the content, bernie does.
But to my original point of succession plans for Bernie. They are also infuential men. Even for Bernie.
he turned f1 into what is essentially a spec series, he removed any means for them to compete by homologating engines and standardising the ECU. he pushed costs through the roof by changes rules almost on a whim and then he drove them loopy by trying to introduce a 2-tier championship.
everything that the man has done in the past 5 years could be considered to be detrimental to the continuation of manufacturers interest.
....maybe.
you could say the same about vijay. he's achieved squat and branson has been in f1 for a whole a year, and done bugger all to include the fans.
i don't want to sound all cynical, but i'll be convinced when i see it :)
He didn't foresee the manufacturers leaving till it hit him in the face. Anyone with any knowledge of the sport was predicting it years ahead of time. You can find countless columns by Nigel Roebuck and many other journalists saying that Max and Bernie should stop recruiting manufacturers and pushing the independents out which were written years ago. You should be able to find numerous comments from me from at least 5 years ago saying that as soon as the economy dipped the manufacturers would quit.
There was no foresight involved. That is what has always happened in the past.
Max imposed the $48 million new team deposit to ensure only manufacturers could get in then dropped it because they stopped entering. No foresigh there.
He then limited the number of cars to 20 and increased the number of places that got points so that as many cars as possible could score points on a regular basis. That and the franchise idea was supposed to lock the manufacturers in and that failed. Again no foresight.
Max can't predict the future. He couldn't even see the past like all the rest of us did. Renault and Honda between them have now quit the sport 6 times. There is a pattern. Regardless of anything else when the economy dips manufacturers leave.
that is quite a stat!
Sidepodmagic
next time you're there, could you sort out my netbook?
ha. i killed ours on the way to the party, christine needed directions and i was busy trying to get tweetdeck back.
He introduced the engine freeze. Honda, Toyota and until the last change Renault had an engine disadvantage and no way of doing anything about it for four years.
Yeah they are extremely valid points, the KERS thing was a hideous decision timing wise. but i think they should persist sometime in the future with it.
I will stand corrected on those points. But i still think the budget cap and new privaterr teams are better solution. This was how F1 was founded.
Manufacturers sanitised the sport. Im glad they're out.
and the ecu screwed likely renault out of a technical advantage they've never recovered from.
You like KERS and think Max demonstrated some foresight with that?
The budget cap could never be made to work. It is way to complex.
that's true. they gave it a certain amount of credibility and stability though.
and illegal in europe.
actually, you mean the resource restriction thingy, right kerbrider? in which case, that is a good idea. although partly that was the teams idea in response to max's lunacy.
did his crazy ideas push them into common sense? maybe.
Regardless of anything else when the economy dips manufacturers leave.
which is why he introduced caps to attempt avoiding that. but FOTA/FIA infighting knocked that for 6 didnt it!
I think KERS is a great plan, or some deriviative of it. His foresight with that is valid. the sport needs to become more eco-friendly for the fans. Its a negative now days to be seen as wasteful. The Timing of KERS was bad, very bad. It would have been a major factor that lead to BMWs pullout.
the restriction on the maximum amount of recovery per lap shot the idea to pieces. that sadly came from the fia, but it was far to small a figure to make the systems workable.
they should've opened up the technology completely for a year to see what teams could come up with.
Yeah i mean the resource restriction. F1 need to go back to grass roots. No doubt. The early part of the decade was mindblowingly boring. Change in a sport/business of this size takes years to implement.
It was to late when action was finally beginning.
they should've opened up the technology completely for a year to see what teams could come up with.
AGREE 100%
It makes no difference. When Renault pulled out as an engine manufacturer in the 90s they were spending nothing in comparison on their F1 program but the CEO said they could not be seen to be spending anything on F1 while they were closing factories and putting people out of work.
Imagine you are running a car company which has an F1 team now. You have the choice keep your F1 team and spend $50 million a year on it or close it down and use that $50 million to keep more skilled employees for when the economy picks up and put maintenance crews into a plant instead of closing it. There is only one thing you can do.
If you are spending $10 million on F1 the answer is still the same. Get out of F1 and do something that puts your company in a better position for the recovery and at the same time save your share price being hit harder than necessary.
When the economy dips it doesn't matter what the cost of F1 participation is manufacturers will leave. It is that simple and Max is still to figure that out
all true.
So why did he ban KERS 10 years ago as being against the ethos of F1 after McLaren had spent a couple of years developing it. Max needed something green and revived McLaren's idea. It is a performance enhancing idea and the environmental impact is low. There are many other things like Stirling engines that are far more environmentally friendly.
I think the cap can be managed. Red tape is what makes it complicated.
On January 1st of each year, each team should present a bank balance of $60mil for example, then present that balance every quarter to the FIA. If at the end of the year, if it is overdrawn, point deduction penalties should occur.
Simple to me.
of course other accounts would need auditing to ensure no secret purchases.
I think a smarter person can make that basic idea work if developed.
Ohh I found out why the podcast is in my home folder. #nothingtoseehere
which is the illegal bit. the fia have no right to do that.
#didntseenuffink
is a performance enhancing idea and the environmental impact is low.
Max had a political motivation. He doesnt really care if it reduces a carbon footprint, he cares about the public perception that F1 was being seen to give a s*** about the environment.
We sometime forget he was a politician above all else. All of his decisions were not neccessarily made for sporting improvement. More about self preservation like any politician
First it is illegal in Europe
Second given the bias shown by the FIA under Max no-one is going to believe anything the accounts auditors say.
Any of the manufacturers could sub-contract the manufacture of exhausts to the people who make the exhausts for their road cars and knock a little off the price of the race units and add a little to the road units.
A team like McLaren has an awesome plant but there are new teams with nothing. Give them the same budget and guess what? McLaren are going to blow them away all the time because they don't need to buy a wind tunnel or a super-computer or an autoclave or any other major capital item.
A budget cap simply cannot work
Who said that?
thirdly, the fia leaks like a colander.
if their people walked into marnello, we'd all know ferrari's gross profit before tea-time.
which is the illegal bit. the fia have no right to do that.
Is this a EU law? i have no idea.
My thought would be its the FIAs championship, if you want to be in it, you wanna play by their rules.
I never forget what he is. What I object to is him getting credit for foresight for missing the bleedin' obvious and bieng given credit for the introduction of KERS when he is the sole reason that there has not been ten years development on that technology. Imagine if the teams had been allowed to recover any energy they could and had put ten years of development into them.
Max is a dinosaur who has no strategic vision and was only ever in the president's chair to be Bernie's proxy. How much money did the sport lose whn Max sold 100 years of commercial rights for $3 million a year? Of course Bernie saw that he was well paid for that.
several different laws. we covered them in a show. it's anti-competitive and no company can be asked to hand over that kind of private information.
The EU has been spoiling for a fight with the FIA for a long time. They see the FIA as a monopoly and they want to break it. Max didn't help that situation either.
Just remembered http://gigglesadvent.com/ .
Oh Dear!
even he can't believe that one :)
@ steven roy
You mention macca had KERS developing 10 years ago and Max rejected it.
When has Max ever helped McLaren out? Like i was saying before, his decisions are political. He may have thought it was brilliant and definately should be ratified. But as a politician, he held back and made the decision when it suited him.
He sis the same to Williams. When DC was the Williams test driver he spent weeks pounding round Silverstone with a CVT system and when it was race ready it got banned. Neither that nor KERS was a secret and both teams spent a load of time and money on them and then they got banned just before they were ready to race.
I know how biased he is that is the main reason a budget cap could not work.
but max isnt there anymore to ;police it. presumably the new people will be more competent. couldnt be less could they?
Jean Todt is in charge now. He was running Ferrari when he signed the deal with Max that allowed Ferrari to veto any technology that other teams came up with. Who is going to trust him to be unbiased?
Thanks for indulging my opinions guys. especially steven and Mr C. ive learnt a bit, and have changed my opinion slightly, thanks to the education.
enlightening stuff. i must be off. thanks again
No problem. I assume you are fairly new to the sport.
Hope you keep asking questions and forming opinions
anytime chap. and don't let our jaded cynicism colour your views too much ;)
or chapess, of course.
I have made that mistake on here before. Saying nothing
me too :)
blimey, it's 4am. i gotta sleep.
Me too.
Good night
talk tomorrow.
night kathi.

Ouch. Gonna abandon you now

Morning :)
Morning Alex
Morning.
GRRR at stupid people in the canteen!
what's up?
We have a paid canteen which includes breakfast - cereals, bread and ham, fruit, that kind of stuff. On Fridays it includes Danish pastries.
The layout for lunch is that the food is on many different islands, and the whole canteen is accessible to all, in theory.
Well this morning one of the islands had pastries and bacon and eggs on it - so I instantly went over and started to grab some. A silly lady decided to tell me off because it was for the canteen workers and tradesmen. But there was no bloody sign or anything! :(
Did you have to give the food back?
Thankfully I was just about to take it when she told me off.
ooh i could go for some bacon and eggs. I wonder if i can get some on the way home :D
By the way, Jake Humphrey was on Fighting Talk this week and it was a live show, so it was ace!
Mooooooorning all :D
I'm going to the MSA today!
Hello to one and all.
Morning - it's snowing here!
That's almost far too cheerful for this time of morning
I have another three day week so today is my Friday. Yay for missing out on Thursdays!
Woohoo!
Bah humbug!
Doesn't that mean yesterday was your "Thursday"?
Not really. Because I don't tend to think about Thursday until Wednesday, but this week Wednesday becomes Friday.
I'm debating making this a half day - so what day does that make it tomorrow?
Erm.. I'm not sure there's a ruling for that. Still Thursday?
Wersday?
Yeah I'd say on a three day week it goes Monday, Tuesday, Friday
i could go for a 3 day week. My next two weeks are though. Whoever thought to put new years right by christmas was a smart person.
No Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday for the following two weeks! Wahey!
How are we all this morning?
Excellent!
I have a three-day week next week, then I have stat days and holiday until Jan 4th...
I had a Tremayne earlier but I'm better now ;)
i have a headache. But i only have 50 minutes of work left. Then its bacon and egg time, if 7 eleven sell bacon.
You have 50 minutes left? That throws me every time!
woop. i have a headache but today should be a fun day.
well it was 10 past 8 and i finish at 9. Counting the minutes as it has been a very long day!
I have just been given a MASSIVE Ferrari F1 calendar!
Motorsport Photographer of the year #SorryLou: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1234929/Cheating-death-The-moment-British-photographer-narrowly-escapes-crushed-runaway-drag-race-car.html
This man is amazing!
/Stupid
You mean crazy.
I have a bit of a cold... And it's appraisal day today. Which is always a bit of a funny day.
I reckon he must have been scared stiff and just thought 'well I'm going to die anyway...'
"Photographer Andy Willsheer calmly snapped away as car careered towards him"
I'm not sure "calm" is how you'd describe it if you had a drag car coming straight at you
i like how it describes the out-of-control car as coming at him out of control.
Grrrr! AUTOSPORT are really starting to annoy me
First it was the AUTOSTARTUP tv
Now they've got a stella advert that pops up and covers the screen every time your pointer wanders within 3 miles of it. Why doesn't 'Close' mean 'Close'?
It took me ages to even find the close button the first time it happened. It was blocking a picture of di licious as well. Wasn't happy.
It's ridiculous that in an age of tabbed browsing that they think it's appropriate to put a hover activated advert between your tabs and the content. I must close it 50 or 60 times a day.
And Stella is rrrrrubbish anyway.
There is a way to make it go away... Sign up to plus. It gets rid of all of the ads as well as giving you more content.
I have that, but I never notice if I am logged in or out until I need something plus-only.
Not an option from this computer. Why should I be browbeaten by such stupidity anyway?
Me too... Except when the adverts come.
Yes it is really shoddy. I agree.
Jeez, I can't even use the contact page without being attacked by it.
I'm off to have a few pints of their competitor's finest ale
hometime!
Woohoo!
yes 7 eleven do sell bacon. Hooray. Now if only i could get rid of this headache my night would be perfect
I would have thought bacon cures everything.
im scared to eat it in case it makes me feel ill, its that type of headache. So i shall pop some pain killers before i start frying
Boo. Sleeping always helps, but I suppose that is silly advice for you :)
Good morning people of Sidepodcast.
Against my better judgement, I'm slowly getting withdrawal symptoms and look likely to succumb to Autosport International again next month.
Has anyone found any promotional codes? Can't find any like the fantabulous 2-4-1 deal last year. Rascals.
Are you going to go and then call it rubbish like you did for James Allen's book ?;)
I have seen none, but equally have not been looking. Will keep eyes peeled.
I don't see the Stella ad, but the AUTOSPORT TV thing is annoying...
Hey, I can't help it if I tell the truth!
Though I didn't pay for James Allen's book. So ner :-)
So it was free? I paid for it and I am enjoying it. Doctorvee gets mentioned too!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80592
Heikki goes Rallyinen!
Already complained about it!!! :-D
http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=120414
Must admit that was a nice pleasant surprise reading that bit. I completely forgot his involvement in the whole saga. CV-stuff that!
I'm going to delve into the Pistonheads forum (shudder) to see if there are any about.
Does anyone have a Subaru 555 padded jacket and sovereign rings I can borrow so that I will blend in?
Hmm Pistonheads. Saw that logo on some very nice cars at the Le Mans campsite...
You are certainly dedicated to the cause!!
Why go to Le Mans to see it, when your local Tesco car park has hordes of them? :-)
You'll never Impreza in that!
*gets coat*
I was just observing the fact that they can't just be about the Chav-mobiles...
I see what you did there!
I think I found one - but you posted it!
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Autosport+International
Is that last year's code or something?
I tried to read your complaint but the bloody stella advert is in the way!
It is. Doesn't work for next month's event unfortunately.
Morning everyone!
Hi Lukeh, how's it going?
Not bad, my back is starting to feel better and it's one of them lovely frosty winter mornings so all is good. Just waiting to see how the renault announcement will turn out now.
Hehe, you say lovely frosty morning, I say stoopid frost on car windscreen. :)
Ahh, see i don't own a car yet. I'm sure in a month or two I will have switched allegiances to this frosty view. :P
Keith says Renault are staying in F1
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/12/16/renault-f1-team-saved/
It's odd, some might say it was a miserable wet morning here, I was thinking "yey - windscreen won't need scraping!"
Official statement here: http://www.renaultf1.com/en/_2009/team/index.php#/team/newsdesk/communiques/22511/
Prepping the breakout. No comments please :)
Is that a smile, Heikki?!
Comment. Don't comment. Make your mind up. :-)
Here: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/16/renault-confirm-intention-to-stay/
I've just realised I have a tiny bruise on my hand from clashing with someone whilst fake canoeing at the Sidepodparty.
#giggleshouseisdangerous
Fake Canoeing?
Dare I ask?
On the wii.
Oh that makes more sense. :)
I almost just left it as canoeing, but went back and added the word 'fake'. That would have confused you even more!
New version of 2010 sporting code is out - includes provision for new driver testing during the season
It reminds me of when I first got the F1 2009 game and mum came into the room saying 'Don't hurt yourself when you crash on there' :)
We mentioned this yesterday but I didn't notice that bit before. They really have to keep an eye on the sneaky teams, don't they?
it's a refreshing change for the FIA to create a (relatively) bullet-proof rule.
There seem to be a lot of anti-sneak rules in there
Like stopping tyre testing on anything other than at F1 tests, and what's this about tyre blankets only being allowed to heat the outside of the tyre?
does this attention to detail have anything to do with the new FIA president?
Now I'm not a fan of Star Wars but even I find this brilliant. It's so bad that it's good.
Nothing like a sneak to catch a sneak?
perhaps. But then, Max was a sneak himself back in the day - it didn't make the rules any more bullet-proof.
It's snowing here now too...
Here's another one (he must have read my theory) they've stopped them using engines 9, 10, 11 and 12 at the same meeting by making them take the 10 place penalties across 4 races
Oh goodness.
Please don't snow, please don't snow, please don't snow.
it's a bit sleety here
I know what I'm going to go as at my next fancy dress party...
Really dry and frosty here. I've had my (unexpected) snow for the winter anyways :P
That is brilliant.
:D
hello :)
Afternoon.
Hey :)
you mean i've spent all morning cleaning my desk! ah what a waste of time :s
how are you today Christine?
Hahah, Tony Fernandes has accepted Richard Branson's challenge of dressing up as an air stewardess
http://www.lotusf1racing.my/article/items/Tony_Fernandes_Accepts_Richard_Bransons_Challenge.html
Very good, thank you :)
I read somewhere you need shooing today. Has that started yet?
:-)
No. Will. Not. Like. FakeLotus.
Well I suppose it's better than what Fernandes wanted to do if Virgin beat him...
Oh godo lord I've just seen the photohop on that page if you click the image.
You guys never have reason to shout at me for some of my scary creations again!
not yet. Have already had a go at the essay, cleaned my desk (like mum asked) and am gonna give myself an hour to catch up with news.. make numerous cups of tea to try get rid of this sore throat before i start it again. :) if i'm still around at 1:30 you have permission to get really mad at me and shoo me :)
how is your back today lukeh?
No, we don't get mad. Shooing is fun!
It's less sore today thank you. less tall buildigs to look at :P
:D hehe
ahh fair enough, london does have quite a few tall buildings.
I do apologise!!
I had a real good one the other week from a whack during tennis- hurt like a ...!
Jenson has a new video on his site! yay for christmas messages and a happy Jenson :)
Hehehe, it took my three days to notice, so I think I will survive.
What a nice message :)
I'm waiting for one from Ferrari wishing us a Merry Christ-Massa :D
Also, the big Ferrari calendar I have got today is mostly Felipe-Baby pictures!
Has anyone seen a picture of DC-Baby yet?
bugger. forgot to turn me mouse of last night. this will become tiresome very quickly.
You have to turn the mouse off? That's crazy-talk.
apparently.
Just on the ice-scrapey thing: hate it.
The heater on my car doesn't work properly so after clearing the screen, I'm driving one-handed on slippery roads while attempting to stop it misting up again.
Can anyone recommend a good (i.e. cheap but durable) computer power supply?
My old flaky one failed last night..
Arnold Schwarzenegger came to visit our CEO in our office building last night!
Will he be back?
He didn't say apparently - he did emphasise open communication though...
ahh, i hadn't realised that this renault news was another infamous PREDICTION, i'm stunned we didn't see this coming too.
:)
Thank God AUTOSPORT are clairvoyant. RG-esque, no? :D
freaky isn't it? i make it a 100% strike rate.
Have they predicted that I'm going to kill their website if they attack me with their stella advert one more time?
Here's one: It's Wednesday, so I predict that I will have a Danish lesson as per usual in half an hour. Or I won't because it's snowing and my teacher may not make it...
We should ask them what 2010 is going to bring seeing as they can obviously see into the future so well
I have yet to see it. Move to Denmark, we still brew good beer here ;)
on the subject of some stella advertising:
"You'll be pleased to hear that you will all get an early Christmas present... the offending ad will be removed from the forum.
It will still run on autosport.com though."
http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=120414&view=findpost&p=4042300
From now on, everytime it pops up I'm going to email AUTOSPORT one of the stella postcards - see how they like it
oops, i may have taken the thread off topic. i fix.
Oh.MY.
I just won an iPod and sold it in the space of 30 minutes. I'm cashing it in! :D
eh?
Great, admit that it sucks but then only half fix it. Who do they think they are, spitpass?
Welcome to Dragons Den... tonight we introduce our new entrepreneur, Journeyer, who made his earnings on winning an iPod and selling it within 30 minutes...
:P
I won it in our Christmas raffle. But I already have an iPhone, so I sold it to get the cash instead. :D
:D
Mr. C, may I suggest that you ask people to refresh the doohickey when you move the comments like that? Else you may end up firefighting...
very pitpass-esque that. the advert didn't bug me, but that response does.
here's an annoying advert, and have yourself a condescending insult to boot.
firefighting is all i do.
But they always do that! I don't understand why anyone thinks they will get a respectable response on the Autosport forums. I've never seen it happen.
Seriously, I'm finding autosport unusable while that thing pops up everytime I so much as breath in their general direction.
Or maybe it's just a lack of sleep.
me neither. ignorance is one thing though, that's a rude response from someone who either doesn't get it, or doesn't care.
As you said, it's every time. One day a better website will happen and people will move away.
It may have helped, just a thought... ;)
it's my punishment for not fixing comments so they update when moved :)
Aww :(
http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=120414&view=findpost&p=4042551
my PREDICTION was correct - time for a Danish lesson.
Vi ses! :)
Should ask for his email so we can send him a stella egreeting or 2 or 5000
i think i'd have put up a forum post yesterday saying:
"we're trying some new fangled advertising solution tomorrow, we're keen to hear your feedback. we're initially trying it for an x number of days and we'll reevaluate how it works after that."
a proactive approach has got to be better than seeing everyone reach for the adblocking solution.
It's just occured to me how much muse's best mate/media manager looks like tomi glock...
Timo....
#sorryrg
Hey!! Benson's a predictor too!!
http://twitter.com/andrewbensonf1/statuses/6731677432
amazing. i can't believe two people managed to predict exactly the same thing! the stars are clearly aligning today, where are my tealeaves?
It's obviously a new ways of formula 1 journalism; predictions. Kinda like horoscopes but with more absurdity.
That's a good question for Joe. "Why do you do all this, frankly, old fashioned research - going to the races, meeting people, making contacts, - when you could just predict the news?"
can we assign predictions into categories named after a ridiculous collection of made up animals?
benson's prediction came in november which in my confused mind makes him a "two-faced leech".
oh wait.
:D
:D
:D
Some of you may have different reason for not wanting Schumi to return to F1, I just want to be able to laugh at Benson
Hold on, has anyone actually seen this prediction?
I predict we're about to.
i've been insulted by ross stonefield twice in two comments, he's going for a record :)
http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=120414&view=findpost&p=4042617
there must be a better way to spend a wednesday.
Well, if I could find it we would... http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/andrew_benson/
.......
Hi all.
Here's a web 2.0 hint for you, stay logged in.
why hello there condescending response
*runs*
Hi RG
hehe.
Afternoon all
In other news, I'll be interviewing Stirling Moss on the Saturday of the show, if anybody's going...
I broke the blockquote again. And I haven't been in the pub this time.
is that the day franck is driving?
i don't think i have a choice :)
Maybe that means you should go to the pub?
I seem to remember that Christine liked Castaway... I really like this page on imdb: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1012434/
Good ol' Wilson
Good afternoon all.
Back from the MSA. Good fun
How are we all?
Sounds like a plan.
Now, apropos 'Stella-gate', while it is certainly an infuriating ad, it does go some way to providing quality coverage for your continued edification. It may even chuck the odd 50p in the crystal ball...
Can't we have a decent beer?
Hey Jon. I'm doin quite well thanks.
hooorah
Uuuuuuuuuuuugh, I'm getting sick of twitter spam
Afternoon
You don't have to follow Benson
i'm not questioning the quality of, nor the reasoning for running it. i think the response in the forum was disappointing, but maybe that was just the way i read it.
i get that people are listening. i'm not convinced they either understand, or care though.
:P
:D
haha :D
*goes to slap some wrists*
Jenson is going to be on top gear again...i assume...!!! - Just as i predicted!
"at Top Gear in the snow with @The_Real_JB"

It'll be a 1:47.5

Brought to you by RG Predicition System™
Give me a prediction and I'll go over the top with it.
Hello, everyone. Back from the party. :D :D :D
Lots of parties to go to yet - 2 on Friday, 1 on Monday, 1 on Tuesday.
When's the Sidepodchristmasspecial? :D
sunday night.
Hmmm. If I do need to show up at the foreign ministry Monday morning, I'll need to plan this properly. Will give my all to join in the fun. ;)
good man :)
must be a good time to plug the facebook page too:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=236171826010&ref=mf
I don't have Facebook. ;) :D
hmmmmm
...yes? Something on your mind?
me? nope...
Wirth: Virgin success rests on car design
Ummm... Mr Wirth, can I just say... duh?
Although what is interesting is that he's not planning to go to all the races this year:
I guess he can afford to miss a GP or three - he's not the team principal, after all.
I've finished analysing the latest version of the 2010 Sporting Regulations, if anyone's interested.
The link doesnt work? :(
#mfc - i.d. mag shuts shop after 55yrs in print:
Certainly the downturn in print advertising has contributed to this decision, but other factors include the fragmentation and specialized information needs of I.D.'s core readers (product designers) and the plethora of information resources available to them--some for free (online and B2B) and others that are highly specialized and targeted to specific industries served.

The link doesnt work? :( {Comment #356}
That's strange. It's working on my computer, but here's another link in case the first one doesn't work.
so. just like newey then.
good morning, angels. {Comment #1}
Good morning, Mr C!
only 16 hours late ;)
didn't happen like that on the tv did it?
Yay that works :)
it would have if they'd have done it by post.
or facebook chat
:)
You would think they could make a mouse with a usb connector that wouldn't need batteries {Comment #23}
Funnily enough, my mouse doesn't need batteries...
...it's a four-year old device* I got for £2 at a computer fair, with a ball and wire. It's the first mouse I've ever had with a scroll wheel. Apart from the wheel, the design may very well date back to the late 70s (it may well be a serial mouse)...
* - Which means my computer mouse is probably older than most biological mice...
only 16 hours late ;) {Comment #361}
:D Well, I wasn't here 16 hours ago and my mobile was switched off...
true dat
Yay that works :) {Comment #363}
Good :) Hope it's an interesting read.
It really is. The actual regulations are way too much of a chore for myself to read, I can't keep up with everything and it's just too much. But that definitely gives me a greater understanding to the changes, positive or negative, that have been made from someone who has obviously pu a great deal of time into reading and understand them so it is very much appreciated :)
i (hearts) mr c
someone has to explain this prediction thing to me though
Several sources such as autosport and Benson saying their predicitions were right concerning Renault. Because the prediction bit is what we were all worried about, like.
what they really mean by prediction is
"i got told right. wooo"
silly peoples
I got invited to a sidepodparty via Facebook.
This is officially the coolest day of my life
I knew that'd make your day ;)
it worked :D ta
http://twitter.com/andrewbensonf1/status/6731677432
hehe!
ugh
Shocking innit.
But for those who care, I did manage to correctly predict Sauber will be in F1 next season.
And mad because they never say, "got that wrong".
oh. wait. that was a joke.
i am sooo slow
i care.
We care about yours! They're awesome. It's those meddling sites.
I predict that I will have gone to an industrial estate in Slough during 2009.
I predicted right
I don;t think I could have predicted anything this year if you asked me in january 09. Clearly my skills are not appropriate for the world of journalism
I really need to stop doing sarcasm on the internet, it sooooo works.
It really is. The actual regulations are way too much of a chore for myself to read, I can't keep up with everything and it's just too much. Thank you very much for that, Lukeh - you've made my day :)
i went to facebook to check after i read that. i found i have requests for all kinds of things, as well as sidepodparty. i'm glad I don't visit FB much anymore.
nah it's easy. lets do some 2010 predictions
- There will be F1 in 2010
oh wait even that one isn't necessarily right. hmm. silly FIA.
maybe this prediction lark is harder than it looks
hmm that made it sound like i didn't like the invite. i did :)
Just boldy guess something, don't bother if it is right.
Felipe Massa will retire in Bahrain.
*stops crying*
:P
forever?
someone has to explain this prediction thing to me though {Comment #371}
As several people before me have said, it's usually people trying to sound clever. This works if the prediction was difficult and the individual not only made the correct prediction but manages not to sound like a total braggart in the process. For example, I saw someone in a forum sarcastically predict at the start of the year that Button would win the world championship. This week, the forumite reminded everyone of this - along with the fact that no serious predictor would have said it because Jenson didn't have a confirmed job at the time of the original prediction...
Few pull it off though and the people predicting Renault's survival are just coming across as having excess ego. After all, for the past week the question has been the format of its survival, not the survival itself. I've even seen journalists in the past attempt to claim they'd predicted stuff when they'd predicted the opposite - probably short memories on their part, but it made them look really, really dumb when I read them...
Nooo, the race, probably some fault within the car, say engine.
:)
ah ok. sounds about right maybe
The BBC F1 team should definitely start looking into some of the things Nostradaumas said. He could be of great help to their articles for 2010
Felipe Massa will retire in Bahrain.
forever? {Comment #394}
Part of the secret of predictions is to be vague on purpose.
If Felipe crashes out of the race, the prediction is correct.
If the engine goes on strike on lap 16, the prediction is correct.
If Felipe laps the field 10 times and then quits F1 because he's bored, the prediction is correct.
In fact, if you look in a big enough dictionary, "retire" can mean "go to bed". Since Felipe probably won't try staying awake for the whole three days of the Bahrain race weekend, the only way this prediction could go wrong is if Felipe skips the weekend altogether...
:D
Ladies and Gentlemen...
Each year we moan that the British GP trophys are rubbish....Well it turns out that they are the trophy they get to keep...the real British GP winners trophy is kept in the Boardroom at the MSA...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/image000-jpg-2
Woop
is that the world cup?
Wow, that saves on predicting who will win the 2010 race...
It's the winners trophy for the British GP
The original World Cup did get stolen when it was in England...
*suspicious*
;)
That is very awesome though Jon. Did you drink any vimto from it though?
:D
I did comment that it would hold a lot of drink!
Busy day. Hopefully be quieter tomorrow. I don't want any new F1 news until the weekend please as my #stupidcomputer broke and I haven't had time to tell ebuyer that yes it really is my credit card, so that's added a day to the delivery...
home time, see ya
you're going to blog about your day, right?
oh. umm. didnt think about that.
maybe :P
Boo, see ya.
See ya from me too, time for training, ciao.
i heard a yes.
As did I.
2CV 24 Hours has moved a week to 21-22nd August.
Now you can all come! (Otherwise i'll hold it against you forever ;))
do we have to camp?
you don't have to sleep!
hmmm.
i won't be....much
i can't see me selling this to christine.
umm...it's August, so it's warm? and...umm.....it's proper motorsport! yeah...hmm
hah, that reminds me of the 24 hours of Lemons here in the states. Some of my brothers-in-law race these races out west. Hopefully they can bring their car to the east coast so I can participate.
'Franck Montagy today announced that he would be taking part in the 2CV 24 Hours next summer...'
;)
I heart lukeh
:P:P:P
it's true. you can't deny it....ahem...umm
if we're there, who will live comment it?
you can do both? hmm
how's the 3g connections out there?
it's the same as phone signal? which was good i think
not necessarily.
GRR I have been delayed getting home because of a bomb threat in Copenhagen railway station. My wife is stuck in the snow driving home...
3G is important for data. Can have strong phone signal but no 3G at all. Just EDGE or, even worse, crappy GPRS
Hello all, now this is winter. Brrrrrrr!
any snow?
ahh shoot :(
It's that kind of talk that's getting him delayed in the first place. Now they'll think someones running around with a gun!
Yeah, off and on throughout the day but hardly any settled, which is good. I have to drive early in the morning for the rest of the week
tis ok - train should arrive in about 15 minutes - I'll only be an hour late now...
:):)
Spa GP Weekend!
really? i thought it was the week before
YES!
i mean. sorry jon. ;)
nope. spa is the week after!
Pity, Mr C was looking forward to it too
true story.
oh.
it's ok. spa's on 28th :P
i'll take that as a yes
that's what you get for celebrating before checking the calendar! :D
bassano!!
you're both coming? aww thats great ;)
Sorry, that was the old Spa date. I haven't updated iCal
But you'll be prepping for the following weekend surely. What with all that travelling and equipment transportation
almost certainly. you can't be too prepared i say.
Phew!
I think you convinced him ;)
that's very unlike you :P
Amy is a good influence
me? noo, i have bought bags and stuff already.
you can go.. Christine and I can watch/comment from the safety of the inside... going outside that close to Spa GP weekend could be very dangerous..
what about me?
You'll obviously be packing ;)
Norfolk?
you survived the Honda bread bins.. as long as you don't try to kill a fly i'm sure you'll be fine :P
:D
and repacking.
Am looking at the pics from my Cousin's wedding back in Oct, deciding what to order
Here's me with my lucky mascot ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/bassano-with-pint-jpg
What's the exact Mascot? :D
A pint of Guinness
heeeh!
Check out the tie!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/ol-skool-tie-jpg
haha. i likes it.
Quiet 'ere innit?
Am still looking at photos, think I've chosen too many, guess that's stage 1
What are they for?
developing stuff here. wishing there were more hours in the day.
sleeping/cooking 'ere
sounds dangerous.
in that order
OMG - Odense is covered in a foot of snow ... in Copenhagen it's only a mild dusting!
The roads are completely frozen and so dangerous that I couldn't ride my bike - and the bike shed was almost snowed shut!
My wife is still stuck on the motorway too :(
:( booo
is it normally like this?
(in winter)
The 'Wenger knot' - did nobody teach you how to tie a tie properly young man? ;)
No - last year we got snow in january but it was about 2 inches...
If and when the time comes and you still want to do an app. Take a look at the Mac OS Ken app
Allows streaming over 3G of daily episodes and access to the last month
Sounds like it'd be a good concept for F1 Minute
Say, 99p or so
Shall I send you an email you can keep for later with some thoughts?
i see. well pls keep us posted.
good plan. cheers.
They are from my cousin's wedding back in Oct. One of his best mate's was the photographer and is letting up get cheap copies at near cost. Am looking at them online now.

My proper use of apostrophes has drastically declined recently. Shocking!
s****
Hi Scott
oooh my goodness.
that copied someone else in
sooo sorry
Excuse me? :P
*thing
Pardon?
Why did I have to quote it? Why?
I put iiiiiiite and clicked on copy and the first bit came on. so sorry
I am shocked. Nearly as shocked as I am by Jon's language!
Good evening. I'm not sure why I turned on the computer, I'm supposed to be leaving the house.....
MR C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Editing please, small error
Hi Alison, if you stay too long, we will 'shoo!' you
Fair do's.
So yeah, some bloke called Jarno dropped by today.
That's an unusual name in Norwich isn't it?
Did he have any mishaps with anyone's driving? ;)
Did he have any photos?
It's an unusual name in Italy too.
http://image3.examiner.com/images/blog/EXID20836/images/ex_golf_digest_cover_tiger_and_obama.jpg
Yes, this is real!
It looks very photoshopped to me

I think there's a website of PS bloopers
There is - but it's not that good...
But I'm TIRED :(
I want to just veg at home. I am going though. Have a good night :)
See ya Alison, not work I hope?
fixed jon!!
:)
thank you :) am really sorry :(
Someone had to with a mouth like that...
:P
Only kidding. Unless john has tourettes then i profusely apologise
ah no. I did it again.
*Jon
:(
Well apparently he was going to drive an Evora around the Lotus test track after his visit, so who knows. But he was alright when he was looking around.
He was actually being filmed by a film crew for the Lotus F1 site. I actually stood next to him when he and Clive Chapman were watching a short video on Lotus' history in F1, and they filmed it. Although I'll most likely be out of shot because of the angle they shot them at. But Clive introduced me to him and I shook his hand and said hi.
Jarno's a really nice guy in real ife and it was great to meet him. Clive did tell me when he was giving me a lift back home (he offered before you ask) that they do want to try and get Heikki down to CTL at some point and that they would, in his words, "try to get him down on a day when I'm there". :D
hmpf
Does keyboard tourettes exist?
Soorrryyyy.
s'alright, i'll let ya off ;)
Oooh awesome. You must give her something from amy!!!
Him! What is wrong with me this evening?!
Ooh, and has anyone heard about a confirmed date for this group launch for the F1 teams?
Her?
clive chapman gave you a lift home?
oh my
My head is broke this evening :(
Yep. :P
Sounds like you had a good time!
please tell me you are blogging this!!
I can if you wish ;)
YES!
Wait till Amy and Emily see that
Also, I only ask about the group launch because I might just know the date on which it's happening....
It's your blog, you should make the call
You'll probably want to record it though and look back in the future
No date has been given out officially apart from possibly late january
ooh, can we guess?
Confidential, I'd imagine
Lukeh's on the right track.
30th January at 11:00am GMT+1
Hey y'all, again.
is it one day or more?
28th Jan?
Hey RG
January 27th!
It's one day.
Listen to RG, that's all I'm saying ;)
RG Predicition System™ works again
Thank you and goodnight.
he cannot possibly that accurate??
Did they give you a contract to sign when you started there?
No need, we will get a PREDICITION soon enough ;)
:)
No idea about the time, but he's got the date spot on.
I'm there on voluntary work so no.
that's a saturday. sidepodmeetup in valencia?
Actually prediciting the date is a bad idea as one of us, when the date arrives, may lower ourselves to benson's level of prediction smugness ;)
*bows*
yes! Valencia is awesome!!!
But that's a whole six weeks away!
Lotus = awesome today

Journo's nabbing cheap hotels?
NO!!!
Why would you remind me of that THING!
ahh, maybe not then. we could just stay at home and live comment it instead :)
I was thinking along the lines of propriety or sensitive information.
Just be careful that's all
#snettertonscheaperandmorefun:P
You know what, I love this - free publicity for the new teams and a rivalry is established - makes me want to like em more!
Plus, it'd be an invite only, closed doors thing, surely?
#andcolderandfoggier
Aww. Bunk with Joe? :D Hahahaha! Kidding.
Scott - can I just say - your job right now is mind-blowing. :O
I'll have a word and see if talking about that kind of thing is alright, just to make sure.
but...but....Valencia is awesome....
I love the idea and i love the friendly competiton between them
But that photoshop scares the life out of me!! I'm never going stuff like that again after seeing Branson as a woman
Scott sounds like he has contacts... surely he could get us an invite or two? ;)
not if the point of it is to open up to fans?
I know - two days and I've already met Brundle and Trulli. Incredible.
It's a certainty at the group launch that these two get all the new team coverage with Campos and USF1 getting next to nothing
will it definitely be in Valencia?

Maybe something along the lines of, 'is there any sensitive stuff I should be aware of?' rather than 'can I broadcast this on the internet?' :)
Brb.
Going to hand myself in to the local asylum.
:)
I want to be sick
If they have any sense they should be running cars through the streets with driver parades etc. Even if they have to run last year's cars.
Could be
So do you think it will be Branson wearing an Air-Asia Hostess uniform?
Tony Fernandes seems quite a character though so I am hoping so.
I did say to Clive that I have a friend on an "online F1 community I'm part of" that's a big fan of Finnish drivers and that she'd be so jealous when I tell her I'd be meeting Heikki. He seemed perfectly OK with it. If it was sensitive info, he probably would have told me not to say anything about it.
Just cover your backside, that's all
Why not offer to write a blog for the factory?
I know. I'll have a word.
That's a good idea. I might consider suggesting it.
Good idea Gavin
Good for your CV too Scott, if you still fancy a spot of journalism in the future
Just seen Mr C's tweet about the blue line on Benson's forehead.
Fabulous :D
;)
I liked the coffee prediction

I don't get it?
Look at the hash tag
Clear Blue is a pregnancy test product
Virgin aren't half getting stuck in it are they?

Oh I dont like them now.
If they carry on like this, fate will put them on Row 13 for most of the year
And they'll deserve it

In reply to that, One line means no, two means yes. Not that I'm an expert on these things!

I think Nick Wirth is on the money there!

Coming from the person who liked Jose Mourinho, I say its brilliant. We need more bashing/arrogance.
He does have a point, just am sure there are better ways of saying it ;)
I'd say you have to earn your right to diss others in this sport
They haven't turned a wheel yet!
There is an honesty in what is said - Brawn was no David in a David vs Goliath. The irony of the comment is Virgin (nee Manor) are saying you do not need wind tunnels and the Brawn is the best evidence that exists that you do.
Just remember next year's Merc was designed with a budget a fraction of the 2009 car so they are unlikely to repeat the success of this season.
nothing like making enemies before you even start.
I didn't know Dome had worked on the Honda as well.
*sits quietly fuming*
are they the lmp chassis people?
I had read somewhere previously they were using between four and six wind tunnels simultaneously and Dome was involved.
yup
Japanese tuning/racing outfit aren't they?
Yes they are, and neither did I!
He is simply protecting himself against ludicrous expectations
Tell me about it. Boooooooooo Nick Wirth, may your car be wirth-less
ahh. thought i heard them mention during le mans.
he's got a point though
He has a point though!
What was the Williams thing?
Booooooo Lukeh. May I remind you it has a Timo in a car.
Timo is awesome. I like Timo! He doesn't criticise my team. :)
sounds like he's been waiting to say that for a long time.
Yaaaaay lukeh
Dome is a Japanese company that built and ran sportscars and F3000 cars. They are one of the best Japanese domestic motor racig companies. I am out of touch with Japanese domestic motor sport but I assume they are involve in the GT championship
No idea
There is more about Dome here

could have been nicer about it! I'm not a fan of people having a go at my team when my team haven't done anything to upset them... (this includes a certain Mr Flavio earlier this year)
yeah but he's come in and bransons pretty much thrust all expectation on him to go win the WDC and WCC which won't happen, there is not even the slightest chance of it happening. he's covering his own back. i don't blame him
http://www.sportinglife.com/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=formula1/09/12/16/AUTO_Virgin_Wirth.html
That is out of order
I dont understand what this has to do with him criticisng Brawn
am biased... you should expect this type of response from me by now ;)
I liked Virgin's black outfits at the launch and some of their design art work is gorgeous. They will be the most stylish team, just not the fastest - oh and both their drivers are fairly attractive to the female fans.
Seriously?
This is hilarious
http://www.robertpopper.com/2009/11/27/its-robin-cooper-week-at-the-bbc/
Letting the side down again!
Least it wasn't suits and baseball caps. Now that's serious.
Manor comes in, Virgin sponsor, Branson says "look what we did last year, look what we're going to do this year" he has to tell people that what happened with Brawn won't happen this year, he has to tell them that Brawn's car was the most expensive and most worked on. he's not necessarily criticising it, just telling it how it is
can i dislike Wirth and Branson but not Di Grassi?
What about Glock?
I do not see it as criticism - rather debunking the myth that Brawn is some poor little David - it was the most expensive F1 car ever produced in terms of development costs.
cheeky!
same
Indeed. With all due respect, I'd rather focus on my own performance before I go dissing off others'.
That said - Honda/Brawn used 3 windtunnels. They're using a grand total of 0 windtunnels...
oopps... and Glock... i like Glock.. *ehem*... he's not as attractive though...
But the badges looked liked they'd be made by Blue Peter
I really dislike this man already
Yes - it is tongue in cheek - and not the pathetic McLaren team jackets that are truly awful.
What does he get out of saying it, though (over than covering his backside)?
Which they say will work for them
Nothing per se, but it's clearly something he wanted to get off his chest ;)
No, I'd say it was just cheap and very last minute
Time will tell on that one. Simulation is great, but it ain't the real world.
It's served them well (enough) in LMP
All it takes is one unaccounted-for detail to screw up your design, as McLaren found out...
If I were to guess, Lotus will beat Virgin this season. #sorryRG
Neither is a wind tunnel though....
But is that what everyone is doing there?
Nope, most use a wind tunnel
As long as Timo does well, I don't care who wins.
Honda Brawn used 6 tunnels
huh?
Let the results speak for themselves then
In the mean time, shut it Mr Wirth!
He was never very popular when he was in F1 before. He just managed it faster this time
Agreed. Grrrrrrrr.
Up to six wind tunnels simultaneously - is there not three at their factory alone?
That is precisely what he is doing
Still puts McLarens horrible jackets, but then I like Team Brawn outfits even though that was also last minute design.
I can see 'Wirth-less' being used very early on in the season :D
Has it? Have his cars been better than th Audis or the Peugeots? They have done well in America but they don't exactly have stacks of high calibre competition there.
Brawns are good, I agree
not unless they're the size of a shoe box.
I knew that was coming.
To think that they have the same development budgets as Audi and Pug is silly
They had work done in two in Brackley, one at Super Aguri, one or two at Honda in Japan and one at Dome.
Unfair comparision - the Acura is petrol which had no chance against the diesels of Audi and Peugeot...
I still don't see how he could have improved after the last time he was in F1. Even after the other disciplines.
also true
Not sure whether they have two or three at the factory
I like this. The more people talk about Virgin, Lotus, and Wirth, the less people are asking "where's USF1?"
;)
Now, where's USF1 again?
All my female friends think he is quite dishy - oh and they think Jenson is scruffy - so it takes all types. The other driver they mention is Mark Webber despite the big ears.
Charlotte, North Carolina?
Quiet, you!
Busy straightening that Jim Clark picture
So how is that different to F1? It's fine for him to day he has produced cars using CFD only but he is now saying wind tunnels are archaic and Williams are stupid for using them. He hasn't won anything significant with his methods yet.
Webber got a big thumbs up when my Wife saw him at the Brazilian GP
I half agree, but the 2 things that spring to mind are 1) People = Ability to do more things and 2) Petrol vs Diesel
Rearrange these words, Wirth-less:
Trousers, Mouth, No, All
One aspect of Mark I really respect is that his partner is not the typical glamour item most F1 drivers have.
http://resources3.news.com.au/images/2008/03/01/va1237294568774/Webber2-5915817.jpg
The point is he is slagging off Williams for using wind tunnels as if everyone had accepted that CFD was the only option. CFD designed cars have one nothing of anything significant yet.
I wasn't disagreeing with that, i was merely pointing out that we shouldn't shout him down for just using CFD
No, we're shouting him down for dissing others when he has proved nothing himself
I am not. I am saying that he should not be shooting his mouth of before he has proved anything. It's not like he was a great success the last time he was in F1. He could end up being the weak link in that whole team in more ways than one.
Hi all :)
Found this you might be interested in.
Kers for bicycles?
I agree :) I wasn't disagreeing with it, just making a point. I laughed very hard when he said it first, but it makes more sense when i think about it
As per Mr C requested:

:P
Will there have to be 'Ctrl', 'Alt' & 'Del' buttons on the handlebars?
Hey Boston, btw
don't think runs Windows which is just as good - you don't want it crashing. Mind you, the spinning colour wheel of death is also an option if you want to make a mac reference. not sure why you would though :)
it seems every couple of days there's some f1 going on - man this off season is crazy.
In way I admire Manor (now Virgin) they are taking a very brave route of not using a wind tunnel, if they have some success (e.g. like being as fast as say Renault) it will prove a point that you can reduce F1 budgets. Wind Tunnels cost silly amounts of money which is why Chip Ganassi used disused tunnels to test their aerodynamics.
http://thegarageblog.com/garage/laurel-hill-tunnel-ganassi-racings-underground-secret/
I think it's one of those issues - if it comes off, you're going to look pretty smart and if it doesn't...well you know the rest. Mind you, we've seen plenty of well designed cars get adjustments within a couple of races based on actual race data. So if you take the away series of races (the first european race is number 5), I think they'll be in much the same boat and I have no idea of the pros and cons of either method, other than $$$$
Even with a wind tunnel you can get it wrong - Hondas before Brawn and this season - the first BMW Sauber - the Hinwil wind tunnel is still fairly state of the art and no F1 team has a more powerful supercomputer than Albert 4. Having said that BMW Sauber did introduce a virtually new car (entirely new chassis) mid season so bad was the KERS one.
But then, new parts based on actual race data are usually run through a windtunnel first before sent to the track. So there is still some variance there between their methods.
agreed.
yay!
Evening all.
Hi Christine
Evening Christine. How was your day?
Should be leaving the office soon. Just 1 more day like this...
Hi Christine
Hellllooo
Very good. Only half been paying attention to goings on today. Time to catch up.
Evening Mrs. C.
Hi Christine
I think judging by his comment on it, Mr C likes my blog post on Classic Team Lotus ;)
Hehehe, mum has been asking me all day what this song is that could be X Factor
She doesn't like it unsurprisingly :D
When you mentioned the list at the end of the post, I was thinking "My Name Is Scott". Have you considered growing a big moustache? ;)
am chuffed to bits for ya sir.
"beat x factor"?
Why thank you, sir. Much appreciated :)
Yea. My typing is quite appalling tonight. :(
So, that preview button eh...
Am getting used to reading between the lines though ;)
We like the Charity one they did, "You Are Not Alone". That was mainly because the original was the song we played for our first dance at our wedding. It has special memories.
wish i had there. d'oh
Speaking of my blog, I made a few minor changes - I've added a flickr widget, changed a couple of things on my Favourites widget and added Mr. Waldock's blog into my links. I'm considering changing the header as well.
wow, has Stella-gate been resolved?
maybe.

I really like the spirit that these bright new teams (Nick Wirth excepted) are putting into their pre-race preparations. I have a feeling that Virgin and Lotus will be a credit to F1, even if their cars turn out to be a tad slow to start with.
The spat with Williams - actually was started by Patrick Head dumping on Virgin Racing - they imply answered back. The rivalry between Virgin and Lotus add some fun. If they get to 1.5 secs of the front runners they will be doing well.
what did patrick say?
I can't believe that with all of us looking for F1 news none of us knew about Head having a go at Virgin or Wirth having a go back until tofay.
That teams like Virgin are heading for a fall.
do you have any more info? what / when etc. i don't remember that.
Was linked earlier
ahh, missed it. one sec.
Sorry, that was Wirth's retort
yeah. there's not quote nor context.
what did he say and when?
i guess it never made it as never because what Patrick said was...true
Actually I realise that we do not have a direct quote of what Patrick said - I do have a quote from Tony Fernandes though
"(Virgin are) very convinced that is the way forward, that you can do it all with CFD," Fernandes told Reuters last week. "I am from the aviation business, mate. You can't. You've got to have a wind tunnel."
They're really building up a rivalry, aren't they?
am siding with notus.
This is the best Buzzcocks episode EVER.
In all honesty they have the stronger driver line-up and a more traditional approach - so I think Branson will be brandishing an Air Asia air-hostess uniform.
Same
Was that the Muse reference by any chance?
Count me in. Mike Gascoyne FTW!
Dr Who centric tonight, isn't it?
I got it as soon as Jupitus did the bassline... :)
I'm off to bed smiling, not off Buzzcocks, but instead this other sport called "football". So night all, lotsa love.
This would make a good pole since they are setting themselves up as rivals.
good plan. we has to to the top 10 drivers tomorrow too.
It's a Doctor Who special so yes
I can't believe she can't get that tune
Me neither, what the hell? Has she never heard the final countdown?
And if she hasn't.... how?!!

Aw nooo. I hope we didn't give you a cold when we saw you yesterday. :P
Hope you feel better though soon Mr Alex
Manflu?
Got to be
We need more David Tennant as himself
Indeed... Lou and Lukeh you came up in a meeting I had with a big company!!! I was having a meeting with a company (one that sponsors an F1 team) and the new account manager I was being introduced to was being all pro and everything talking about lots of important business stuff and then half way through she turned to her collegue and said... "I've got it... He's Michael McIntyre". Right in the middle of a sentence!!!
She said, "I bet you get it all the time!"
And I said, "well I do but yesterday some friends of mine thought they had seen me in Hyde Park and chased after me only to discover that it was Michael!"
She said, "how sweet, you even have the kind of stories that Michael would tell".
After the meeting we were walking down the corridor and she said to me, "say something Michael would say!!!" Crazy!
I'm sure I'll be fine!
What!!! That's insane!
Oh yes. I'm for sure dying. Why can't you see that I'm about to die? ;)
Totally mad!
!!
i think i love David Tennant, that was hilarious... :D
indeed we do! :D
You should do gigs as him. You would make a fortune
And people who work with him don't have a bad word to say about him. And he loves the West Wing. That counts for a lot in my book :)
Maybe we should do a show together?
#nothere
He was on Christian O'Connell Solution on 5Live a few months back, I perhaps shoulda mentioned it. If you can find it, its the very first ep.
@ Steven & Mr C.
Yesterday i signed off and you left some kind comments afterwards. I am just going to reply to those. Firstly Mr C. I am indeed a chap. and i do believe yourself and others on here do have the cynical blood flowing through you.
To Steven, i'm not actually that new to F1. Have been a hardcore fan since the mid 90s. basically since i could stay up late and watch the races, (i live in australia) and didnt have to worry about school the next day. we dont have as much press covereage as you guys in Europe, so my opinions may not be as well informed as yours.
In my defence at sounding naive yesterday, i dont think i have the cynical F1 blood running through me. I actually look at the thing quite positively most of the time. which is unusual for me, as i am a cynic at heart.
So my defence of some of Max's actions, in my eyes were valid.
on the point of the 48million entry fee, i dont think this was an added rule with the aim of enticeing manufacturers, i think at the time, it was designed to ensure that only well funded teams would join and stay in. this happened after teh Loloa pull out after one race in 97 i think it was. The 48 mill was paid back in full incrementally to any new teams who joined. And their was only toyota who did in that period. the other new teams all took over old ones.
!!! OMG! :D
you in a blue shirt, him in a pink shirt?...
i wonder if he likes Formula 1?....
#sorrylukeh ;)
Definitely
Reminds me of an Alan Partridge radio episode.
"Do Your Frank Spencer"
can't argue with that. i will say i didn't used to be this cynical. f1 made me this way :)
i don't think you sounded naive at all, kerbrider. it's good to have differing opinions.
What is the difference between only allowing in teams who can afford to deposit $48 million and keeping the little guys out. It's the same thing. Only big companies need apply. Sponsors don't write cheques for the full amount of their sponsorship up front so a normal racing team simply would not have $48 million lying around at a time when they have to hire staff, build a factory, buy million of dollars worth of capital equipement etc. Lola was a convenient scapegoat
I don't blame you!
:P
I agree MrC. its the difference that makes the world go 'round. I love the diversity of life, and opinions should be encouraged.
Sux that F1 made you that way. All i get out here is F1 racing, and i used to check my news on itv-f1, until i stumbled across you guys on iTunes.
I still dont see it your way Steven, sorry. Maybe in hindsight (which is always 20/20) it worked that way.
I cannot wait till Max writes a book and fills us in on all the details. (if they can be trusted) LOL.
it's all good, lotus and virgin are keeping f1 entertaining this week :)
i wouldn't be sorry if max walked away and never was heard from again though.
Nah, i wouldnt care either actually. I was sceptical of Jean todt leading teh FIA, but at least he seems to be sticking to promises so far.
Yeah that poster of branson in teh dress and fernandez comment "coffee, tea, or me" had me rolling around laughing. I'll be going for Virgin for sure. i like Bransons attitude. And being a straight and happily married male, i now gotta agree with Mrs C. di grassi is one good looking mutha. Im comfortable with my sexuality to admit that.
Like I said last night many people myself included objected to the aggressive recruitment of manufacturers at the expense of the privateers from the first day it was obvious that Bernie and Max were pursuing that strategy. There is no hindsight involved.
The various strategies they pursued drove down the number of teams for no good reason. My attitude has always been that if someone can turn up with a car that can pass scrutineering and a driver with a superlicence they should be allowed to race. I have never seen the need to artificially limit the number of cars. In the 1980s at one point we had 39 cars entering races. Max and his predecessor managed to half that number.
but surely that many cars would dilute the talen and teh racing. Sure the teams at the front mightve provided entertainment, but the guys at teh back are just wasting everyones time.
Out of USF1 lotus and virgin, one of them will be gone within 2 years. or sold out.
Just another topic, will there ever be a season again where a new team enters, wins both championships, and nicks off? becasue that how the history books will show it.
That is how Jordan got in for example. They had to pre-qualify for the first half season then their results were good enough they got a guaranteed shot at qualifying and pushed someone else down. F1 should be about the pursuit of excellence. Why should Force India and Toro Rosso be guaranteed grid slots forever despite the fact that they contribute nothing? Prodrive and Epsilon Euskadi are serious professional racers. Why should they be banned from F1? Why should they not be allowed to turn up and prove they are good enough.
The current system allows teams to be rubbish and not be under any threat. Surely allowing the likes of Prodrive to come in as a serious competitor and pushing out the worse team strenghthens the sport rather than weakening it?
i'd agree with that.
Thanks Mr C. but i also agree with Steven, David richards is brillaint and was even able to manage turning BAR into soemthing respectable till he got turfed. i think he spent 10 minutes at benetton too.
prodrive should be there for sure.
but again 39 cars is not healthy. especially back when only 6 cars got points.
We have major teams massively cutting headcount. Surely it would be better to keep these people in F1 with new teams so they keep learning and improving so that they can work for a top team one day than driving them out of the sport and losing their ability? There has been a lot of talk about Nick Wirth today. Under current rules introduced by his Simtek partner his team would never have been allowed into the sport and he would have no credibility whatever.
the people at the back can waste my time all they want if they are a heikki or a di licious :D ;)
There are two ways to achieve fewer cars. The current method which says if you are on the inside you have a permanent place or you allow everyone in and the weak will be forced out. I see no benefit to teams being given guaranteed frid slots. Look at Minardi. They were last in the championship every year Paul Stoddart was in charge. What did anyone gain from that. Let Dave Richards and Joan Villadelprat enter their teams and push out the Stoddarts of the world.
But they have helmets on Amy. so you like the design? LOL
Would you not rather they were with a Prodrive or Epsilon Euskadi that might move them forward and you would see them more?
But with such a fast paced competitive environment steven, there will always be a weak link, whether it is minardi, simtek, forti, etc.
no matter who is in, there has been and always will be a perennial back runner. i think this is good for the sport in a way. Underdogs are important in sport. it keeps fans in.
i think you speak a lot from the business perspective Steven, i think i speak more from the sporting side.
ooh i do like the idea of seeing them more. I wonder if id get arrested if i lived outside crown towers for a week
My interest is only in the sport an not the business. I want the best teams we can possibly have so there is more competition. I see no point in teams being guaranteed a slot when all they do is run round at the back getting in the way when there are other teams who could come in and challenge their position. Dave Richards and Joan Villadelprat know how to run teams successfully. If they were allowed to compete they would be running midfieled in no time flat. Neither of those guys would run a team that was permanently at the back of the grid.
so the teams that are now midfield would be at the back. No matter what, unless budget caps come in properly, macca and fazza will be at the top. Yawn!
Are you going to be at albert park this year? id love to meet you guys and chat like this. would be fun, gets the juices flowing
ill be there!
Brawn GP are going to be at Autosport on their own stand...
#backincave
i don't understand...... but now want to go to autosport...
i can't give anything else away #becauseireallydontknow
but...but... but.... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they're on the Autosport International list of exhibitors
so they'll just be selling left over merchandise?...
i has nooo idea
thank you for telling me what you know ;)
There will always be teams at the back. My objection is that teams who contribute nothing have a guaranteed slot while teams that could challenge are banned.
New teams used to come in and win and push down the previous winners. The reason Ferrari and McLaren have been so strong is because no new competitive teams are allowed in. Look at the history of the sport and teams that won championships were pushed out by new teams. Tyrrell used to be dominant as did Brabham and Williams.
that would be nothing :P merchanise is probably a good shout
It just means they ordered the stand before Mercedes bought them. They are bound to have the Brawn car there though
aahh *thinks* maybe not desperate i go then :P
I think you have more chance of getting Brawn merchandise online than at the show. I would expect them to be pushing Mercedes at the show. Probably the first or second week in January after Xmas is out of the way the online shop will slash prices. Keep your eyes open.
naah i don't need brawn merchandise... not that i already have some or anything :P
unless you're looking for Heikki merchandise....
Mclaren can't even give that away
will the livery be decided by then? usually the stands stock last year's tat.
Good question. I was forgetting the show was before the launch. That may complicate things.
are you calling Brawn merchandise tat?
;)
...
...
nooooooooooooo!
thats definitely a yes ;)
force india launched an interim livery at AIS once. not quite the same league though.
Silly mr c!
I will continue to remember the merchandise as myself probably being the own fan at Goodwood last year with a Brawn Rubens cap ;) and probably this year too!
I know agree with lukeh and lou about Catherine Tate
I would still expect to see a load of Merc branding at the show but since it is before the launch they may try to unload Brawn merchandise.
hmmmm.... you're too nice to be angry at...
#luckyescape
Hmm?
I'm not sure what to think of her anymore. As Donna Noble, she is utterly awesome. But my god she was really, really annoying on NTMB.
what do i think about Catherine Tate?
true dat
even come first race a lot of teams dont have merchandise available. Which is a pain when i am coffee mug hunting.
I have never liked her for some reason. Everything she does just annoys me
i wonder if it will be the first sighting of Jenson in Mclaren uniform... he'll be free from his Brawn contract by then wont he :(
oh i liked her on NMTB this evening i thought she was funny... :D
I guess it won't be such a big problem in 2010 when you are going to half of the races.
:)
I think his contract runs to Dec 31.
He must come visit me on my birthday, and then I shall decide if he can leave or not
Spoilers: i'm gonna say no
isn't it about time a team took jenson to the CRB?
i really regret not getting that force india mug in singapore, they had no merch stand in melbourne this year
you've got the power to get Jenson to visit you on you're birthday and you didn't get him to visit me on my birthday! hmmmm....
:D
CRB?
Wants to work with kids clearly ;)

I don't think you are going to be too nice for much longer

you know when i said you were too nice to be angry at?... hmmmmm..... i could change my mind....
Eveningggg
Evening Alison
i'm telling christine...
i'll take you're camera as compensation? :P
hey :)
we all go through that stage :)
hehe!
*remembers the prices from yesterday*
It's a fair deal Mr C. I say go for it.
Max always introduced new rules without considering their implications. This is just the kind of knee jerk reaction Max would be proud of.
eeheh you think i'm joking! :P
Hello
it's pricey but it's worth it. it's over a year old and still no model has come close to bettering it. not even the model designed to replace it.
@ Mr C. LMAO.
Another influential scottsman.
I think that means yes
*remembers the camera section of selfridges* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
They are very impressive but my knowledge of cameras matches badoer's knowledge of fast driving. Lou wasn't too impressed that I tend to stick with disposable cameras. :P
christ!
am having serious problems decided which camera i like more.. the Nikon coolpix P90... or the Olympus E-P1... the Nikon looks amazing and has an incredible zoom.... but the Olympus is very pretty, has interchangeable lenses (although not sure i would really buy more lenses for it) but no viewfinder...
The Nikon is also a bit cheaper...
:D
Which brand do most F1 photographers use?
really don't know much about the nikon. micro 4/3rds is still in it's infancy, but i think it has potential.
true story... however if i'm out with you i take enough photographs for us both ;) although you do have a you're phone and it's fake shutter noise :P
My shutter noise is awesome!!
Aww my poor phone crapy camera phone :( It will forever get my support with it's shutter noise!
f1 photographers mainly use Dslrs.. these are digital cameras (as my previous digital camera is slowly dying a painful death of old age and wear and tear). From what i can gather a great percentage of F1 photographers use Canon, but that could be because Canon often supply the lenses etc to the agencies and photographers. I've seen a few with Nikons though :)
ehehehe :P
I am going to disappear for a little while. Back soon.
I remember when you first heard it on the london eye and you just looked at me as if to say... "What what THAT?" :)
