Today is apparently the Independence Day of Bahrain, which has less to do with Will Smith defending the planet from aliens and more to do with the kingdom standing on it's own two feet. Very good stuff. Now, onto Formula 1 news. As we were saying in the comments yesterday, December has never been so busy in F1, so we'd best make the most of it.

  • Yesterday saw some late night gaming, as the F1 2009 game appeared on the iPod Touch and iPhone. Mr C initially posted some thoughts, and then we got a review from our game expert Lukeh. The lack of racing against other cars is a bit off putting for me, although I don't know why because I always lose.
  • Yesterday, Manor finally confirmed they were going to be called Virgin Racing, and signed up di licious to race alongside Timo Glock. That's a pretty good lineup for a new team, and they even have a brilliant video on their new site that is definitely worth a watch.
  • The good news is that Campos have confirmed they are still in talks with Hedgehog de la Rosa. I am very keen for the Spaniard to get a drive if only because he has some of the best nicknames in the paddock. If he did get the seat, he would be teammates with Senna, and if you want a reminder of who else has a confirmed seat for next year - check out the wiki page.

That's all for now. Let us know how your week is going and as always, I will see you in and around the comments.

That's shockingly poor! I couldn't imagine having to change the battery in my mouse even monthly, that's insane! Why doesn't it just sit in a charging dock when you're not using it?

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 01:38

how do fans have that much time on their hands?

Beats me. Why would anyone watch practise one weekend when they could watch qualifying for the next two. The who thing is ridiculously drawn out and complicated. It's like they are still in the 1920s and want everyone to have time to get their cars set up perfectly. The teams know the track inside out and they run a spec car. They should be able to do one practise day then do 100.1% of their optimal laptime the next day.

  • Alison16/12/2009 at 01:40

It seems like F1 is about to go into revolution. We have Lopez, Branson, and Chad Hurley all commiting heavily into a sport they see as vulnerable because it has yet to embrace the new internet age. These guys are wise, savvy and have a lot of nouse when they see potential in a sinking ship.

i dunno, nicolas todt's gp2 team was rumoured to have access to a bunch of ferrari data at one point.

I can't imagine what good that would do them although it may add to the questions about Ferrari running their 2007 car on GP2 tyres

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:02

So no surprises for guessing Steven is not a max fan. His foresight was of the manufacturers jumping ship.

So the revolution will happen, and of course they are entering for a profit. I cant see anyone nowdays just doing it for the love. even saint Frank sold a portion of Williams earlier.

What i mean is that the new guys will change the way F1 is broadcast. They will make it more interactive and accessable than it is now for we, the fans.

at the time they were dominating the series and i think the suggestion was the gp2 team we're being fed data from f1 practice about track status, weather predictions, etc.

    all rumour though.

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:10

Please explain. Obviously ive missed something. He gave plenty of chances for them to sort out the budget concerns. By the time it happened it was too late.

he turned f1 into what is essentially a spec series, he removed any means for them to compete by homologating engines and standardising the ECU. he pushed costs through the roof by changes rules almost on a whim and then he drove them loopy by trying to introduce a 2-tier championship.

everything that the man has done in the past 5 years could be considered to be detrimental to the continuation of manufacturers interest.

you could say the same about vijay. he's achieved squat and branson has been in f1 for a whole a year, and done bugger all to include the fans.

i don't want to sound all cynical, but i'll be convinced when i see it :)

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:12

So no surprises for guessing Steven is not a max fan. His foresight was of the manufacturers jumping ship.

He didn't foresee the manufacturers leaving till it hit him in the face. Anyone with any knowledge of the sport was predicting it years ahead of time. You can find countless columns by Nigel Roebuck and many other journalists saying that Max and Bernie should stop recruiting manufacturers and pushing the independents out which were written years ago. You should be able to find numerous comments from me from at least 5 years ago saying that as soon as the economy dipped the manufacturers would quit.

There was no foresight involved. That is what has always happened in the past.

Max imposed the $48 million new team deposit to ensure only manufacturers could get in then dropped it because they stopped entering. No foresigh there.

He then limited the number of cars to 20 and increased the number of places that got points so that as many cars as possible could score points on a regular basis. That and the franchise idea was supposed to lock the manufacturers in and that failed. Again no foresight.

Max can't predict the future. He couldn't even see the past like all the rest of us did. Renault and Honda between them have now quit the sport 6 times. There is a pattern. Regardless of anything else when the economy dips manufacturers leave.

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:13

Renault and Honda between them have now quit the sport 6 times.

    that is quite a stat!

He introduced the engine freeze. Honda, Toyota and until the last change Renault had an engine disadvantage and no way of doing anything about it for four years.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:16

Yeah they are extremely valid points, the KERS thing was a hideous decision timing wise. but i think they should persist sometime in the future with it.

I will stand corrected on those points. But i still think the budget cap and new privaterr teams are better solution. This was how F1 was founded.

Manufacturers sanitised the sport. Im glad they're out.

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:17

He introduced the engine freeze. Honda, Toyota and until the last change Renault had an engine disadvantage and no way of doing anything about it for four years.

and the ecu screwed likely renault out of a technical advantage they've never recovered from.

Yeah they are extremely valid points, the KERS thing was a hideous decision timing wise. but i think they should persist sometime in the future with it.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:18

I will stand corrected on those points. But i still think the budget cap and new privaterr teams are better solution. This was how F1 was founded.

The budget cap could never be made to work. It is way to complex.

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:19

    Manufacturers sanitised the sport.

that's true. they gave it a certain amount of credibility and stability though.

actually, you mean the resource restriction thingy, right kerbrider? in which case, that is a good idea. although partly that was the teams idea in response to max's lunacy.

did his crazy ideas push them into common sense? maybe.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:21

Regardless of anything else when the economy dips manufacturers leave.

which is why he introduced caps to attempt avoiding that. but FOTA/FIA infighting knocked that for 6 didnt it!

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:23

I think KERS is a great plan, or some deriviative of it. His foresight with that is valid. the sport needs to become more eco-friendly for the fans. Its a negative now days to be seen as wasteful. The Timing of KERS was bad, very bad. It would have been a major factor that lead to BMWs pullout.

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:25

The Timing of KERS was bad, very bad. It would have been a major factor that lead to BMWs pullout.

the restriction on the maximum amount of recovery per lap shot the idea to pieces. that sadly came from the fia, but it was far to small a figure to make the systems workable.

they should've opened up the technology completely for a year to see what teams could come up with.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:26

Yeah i mean the resource restriction. F1 need to go back to grass roots. No doubt. The early part of the decade was mindblowingly boring. Change in a sport/business of this size takes years to implement.

It was to late when action was finally beginning.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:27

they should've opened up the technology completely for a year to see what teams could come up with.

    AGREE 100%

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:28

which is why he introduced caps to attempt avoiding that. but FOTA/FIA infighting knocked that for 6 didnt it!

It makes no difference. When Renault pulled out as an engine manufacturer in the 90s they were spending nothing in comparison on their F1 program but the CEO said they could not be seen to be spending anything on F1 while they were closing factories and putting people out of work.

Imagine you are running a car company which has an F1 team now. You have the choice keep your F1 team and spend $50 million a year on it or close it down and use that $50 million to keep more skilled employees for when the economy picks up and put maintenance crews into a plant instead of closing it. There is only one thing you can do.

If you are spending $10 million on F1 the answer is still the same. Get out of F1 and do something that puts your company in a better position for the recovery and at the same time save your share price being hit harder than necessary.

When the economy dips it doesn't matter what the cost of F1 participation is manufacturers will leave. It is that simple and Max is still to figure that out

    all true.

So why did he ban KERS 10 years ago as being against the ethos of F1 after McLaren had spent a couple of years developing it. Max needed something green and revived McLaren's idea. It is a performance enhancing idea and the environmental impact is low. There are many other things like Stirling engines that are far more environmentally friendly.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:32

I think the cap can be managed. Red tape is what makes it complicated.

On January 1st of each year, each team should present a bank balance of $60mil for example, then present that balance every quarter to the FIA. If at the end of the year, if it is overdrawn, point deduction penalties should occur.

    Simple to me.

of course other accounts would need auditing to ensure no secret purchases.

I think a smarter person can make that basic idea work if developed.

  • Kathi16/12/2009 at 03:32

Ohh I found out why the podcast is in my home folder. #nothingtoseehere

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:33

which is the illegal bit. the fia have no right to do that.

is a performance enhancing idea and the environmental impact is low.

Max had a political motivation. He doesnt really care if it reduces a carbon footprint, he cares about the public perception that F1 was being seen to give a s*** about the environment.

We sometime forget he was a politician above all else. All of his decisions were not neccessarily made for sporting improvement. More about self preservation like any politician

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:36

I think a smarter person can make that basic idea work if developed.

First it is illegal in Europe

Second given the bias shown by the FIA under Max no-one is going to believe anything the accounts auditors say.

Any of the manufacturers could sub-contract the manufacture of exhausts to the people who make the exhausts for their road cars and knock a little off the price of the race units and add a little to the road units.

A team like McLaren has an awesome plant but there are new teams with nothing. Give them the same budget and guess what? McLaren are going to blow them away all the time because they don't need to buy a wind tunnel or a super-computer or an autoclave or any other major capital item.

A budget cap simply cannot work

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:37

Ohh I found out why the podcast is in my home folder. #nothingtoseehere

    Who said that?

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:37

First it is illegal in Europe

Second given the bias shown by the FIA under Max no-one is going to believe anything the accounts auditors say.

thirdly, the fia leaks like a colander.

if their people walked into marnello, we'd all know ferrari's gross profit before tea-time.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 03:37

which is the illegal bit. the fia have no right to do that.

Is this a EU law? i have no idea.

My thought would be its the FIAs championship, if you want to be in it, you wanna play by their rules.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:41

We sometime forget he was a politician above all else. All of his decisions were not neccessarily made for sporting improvement. More about self preservation like any politician

I never forget what he is. What I object to is him getting credit for foresight for missing the bleedin' obvious and bieng given credit for the introduction of KERS when he is the sole reason that there has not been ten years development on that technology. Imagine if the teams had been allowed to recover any energy they could and had put ten years of development into them.

Max is a dinosaur who has no strategic vision and was only ever in the president's chair to be Bernie's proxy. How much money did the sport lose whn Max sold 100 years of commercial rights for $3 million a year? Of course Bernie saw that he was well paid for that.

  • me16/12/2009 at 03:42

Is this a EU law? i have no idea.

several different laws. we covered them in a show. it's anti-competitive and no company can be asked to hand over that kind of private information.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 03:43

Is this a EU law? i have no idea.

The EU has been spoiling for a fight with the FIA for a long time. They see the FIA as a monopoly and they want to break it. Max didn't help that situation either.

    @ steven roy

You mention macca had KERS developing 10 years ago and Max rejected it.

When has Max ever helped McLaren out? Like i was saying before, his decisions are political. He may have thought it was brilliant and definately should be ratified. But as a politician, he held back and made the decision when it suited him.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 04:11

He sis the same to Williams. When DC was the Williams test driver he spent weeks pounding round Silverstone with a CVT system and when it was race ready it got banned. Neither that nor KERS was a secret and both teams spent a load of time and money on them and then they got banned just before they were ready to race.

I know how biased he is that is the main reason a budget cap could not work.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 04:14

but max isnt there anymore to ;police it. presumably the new people will be more competent. couldnt be less could they?

but max isnt there anymore to ;police it. presumably the new people will be more competent. couldnt be less could they?

Jean Todt is in charge now. He was running Ferrari when he signed the deal with Max that allowed Ferrari to veto any technology that other teams came up with. Who is going to trust him to be unbiased?

    what's up?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)16/12/2009 at 07:17

GRRR at stupid people in the canteen!

    what's up?

We have a paid canteen which includes breakfast - cereals, bread and ham, fruit, that kind of stuff. On Fridays it includes Danish pastries.

The layout for lunch is that the food is on many different islands, and the whole canteen is accessible to all, in theory.

Well this morning one of the islands had pastries and bacon and eggs on it - so I instantly went over and started to grab some. A silly lady decided to tell me off because it was for the canteen workers and tradesmen. But there was no bloody sign or anything! :(

  • Kathi16/12/2009 at 07:19

Why go to Le Mans to see it, when your local Tesco car park has hordes of them? :-)

I was just observing the fact that they can't just be about the Chav-mobiles...

  • Dank16/12/2009 at 10:40

    You'll never Impreza in that!

I see what you did there!

  • Maverick16/12/2009 at 10:52

Has anyone found any promotional codes? Can't find any like the fantabulous 2-4-1 deal last year. Rascals.

I think I found one - but you posted it!

    http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Autosport+International

Is that last year's code or something?

  • Maverick16/12/2009 at 10:53

    Already complained about it!!! :-D

I tried to read your complaint but the bloody stella advert is in the way!

  • Dank16/12/2009 at 10:53

Is that last year's code or something?

It is. Doesn't work for next month's event unfortunately.

    Hi Lukeh, how's it going?

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 10:57

    Hi Lukeh, how's it going?

Not bad, my back is starting to feel better and it's one of them lovely frosty winter mornings so all is good. Just waiting to see how the renault announcement will turn out now.

  • Christine16/12/2009 at 10:59

Ahh, see i don't own a car yet. I'm sure in a month or two I will have switched allegiances to this frosty view. :P

It's odd, some might say it was a miserable wet morning here, I was thinking "yey - windscreen won't need scraping!"

    Fake Canoeing?

    Dare I ask?

  • Christine16/12/2009 at 11:30

    Dare I ask?

    On the wii.

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 11:32

    On the wii.

Oh that makes more sense. :)

  • Christine16/12/2009 at 11:33

Oh that makes more sense. :)

I almost just left it as canoeing, but went back and added the word 'fake'. That would have confused you even more!

  • Maverick16/12/2009 at 11:37

New version of 2010 sporting code is out - includes provision for new driver testing during the season

If a team declares that one of its current race drivers is to be substituted by a driver who has not participated in an F1 race in the two previous calendar years, one day of track testing will be permitted between the start of the week preceding second Event and the last Event of the Championship. The following must be observed :

    - Any such day may only be carried out by the new driver and may not take place on a circuit hosting a race in the current Championship year.

    - Any such day may only take place within a period 14 days prior to the substitution and 14 days after the substitution has taken place.

    - If a team, having declared the driver’s substitution and performed the test, does not then enter an Event with the new driver, the team will be penalised by a reduction of one day from the pre-season track testing days available in the following year.

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 11:37

I almost just left it as canoeing, but went back and added the word 'fake'. That would have confused you even more!

It reminds me of when I first got the F1 2009 game and mum came into the room saying 'Don't hurt yourself when you crash on there' :)

  • Christine16/12/2009 at 11:40

    - If a team, having declared the driver’s substitution and performed the test, does not then enter an Event with the new driver, the team will be penalised by a reduction of one day from the pre-season track testing days available in the following year.

We mentioned this yesterday but I didn't notice that bit before. They really have to keep an eye on the sneaky teams, don't they?

  • Journeyer16/12/2009 at 11:50

it's a refreshing change for the FIA to create a (relatively) bullet-proof rule.

  • Maverick16/12/2009 at 11:54

it's a refreshing change for the FIA to create a (relatively) bullet-proof rule.

There seem to be a lot of anti-sneak rules in there

Like stopping tyre testing on anything other than at F1 tests, and what's this about tyre blankets only being allowed to heat the outside of the tyre?

  • Journeyer16/12/2009 at 11:55

There seem to be a lot of anti-sneak rules in there

Like stopping tyre testing on anything other than at F1 tests, and what's this about tyre blankets only being allowed to heat the outside of the tyre?

does this attention to detail have anything to do with the new FIA president?

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 11:59

Now I'm not a fan of Star Wars but even I find this brilliant. It's so bad that it's good.

  • Maverick16/12/2009 at 12:00

does this attention to detail have anything to do with the new FIA president?

Nothing like a sneak to catch a sneak?

  • Journeyer16/12/2009 at 12:01

Nothing like a sneak to catch a sneak?

perhaps. But then, Max was a sneak himself back in the day - it didn't make the rules any more bullet-proof.

  • Alex Andronov16/12/2009 at 12:02

Here's another one (he must have read my theory) they've stopped them using engines 9, 10, 11 and 12 at the same meeting by making them take the 10 place penalties across 4 races

  • Christine16/12/2009 at 12:03

    It's snowing here now too...

i think i'd have put up a forum post yesterday saying:

"we're trying some new fangled advertising solution tomorrow, we're keen to hear your feedback. we're initially trying it for an x number of days and we'll reevaluate how it works after that."

a proactive approach has got to be better than seeing everyone reach for the adblocking solution.

Wirth: Virgin success rests on car design

Ummm... Mr Wirth, can I just say... duh?

Although what is interesting is that he's not planning to go to all the races this year:

"Of course my ego wants this to be a success, but I'm doing it in a way where I'm not going to all the grands prix, and the way that my own companies are structured means I don't have to worry about business matters and try and worry about what I really enjoy, which is innovation and leading the technical direction."

I guess he can afford to miss a GP or three - he's not the team principal, after all.

#mfc - i.d. mag shuts shop after 55yrs in print:

Certainly the downturn in print advertising has contributed to this decision, but other factors include the fragmentation and specialized information needs of I.D.'s core readers (product designers) and the plethora of information resources available to them--some for free (online and B2B) and others that are highly specialized and targeted to specific industries served.

Funnily enough, my mouse doesn't need batteries...

...it's a four-year old device* I got for £2 at a computer fair, with a ball and wire. It's the first mouse I've ever had with a scroll wheel. Apart from the wheel, the design may very well date back to the late 70s (it may well be a serial mouse)...

    forever?

  • Alianora La Canta16/12/2009 at 16:40

    someone has to explain this prediction thing to me though {Comment #371}

As several people before me have said, it's usually people trying to sound clever. This works if the prediction was difficult and the individual not only made the correct prediction but manages not to sound like a total braggart in the process. For example, I saw someone in a forum sarcastically predict at the start of the year that Button would win the world championship. This week, the forumite reminded everyone of this - along with the fact that no serious predictor would have said it because Jenson didn't have a confirmed job at the time of the original prediction...

Few pull it off though and the people predicting Renault's survival are just coming across as having excess ego. After all, for the past week the question has been the format of its survival, not the survival itself. I've even seen journalists in the past attempt to claim they'd predicted stuff when they'd predicted the opposite - probably short memories on their part, but it made them look really, really dumb when I read them...

  • RG16/12/2009 at 16:40

    forever?

Nooo, the race, probably some fault within the car, say engine.

ah ok. sounds about right maybe

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 16:41

The BBC F1 team should definitely start looking into some of the things Nostradaumas said. He could be of great help to their articles for 2010

  • Alianora La Canta16/12/2009 at 16:45

Felipe Massa will retire in Bahrain.

    forever? {Comment #394}

Part of the secret of predictions is to be vague on purpose.

If Felipe crashes out of the race, the prediction is correct.

If the engine goes on strike on lap 16, the prediction is correct.

If Felipe laps the field 10 times and then quits F1 because he's bored, the prediction is correct.

In fact, if you look in a big enough dictionary, "retire" can mean "go to bed". Since Felipe probably won't try staying awake for the whole three days of the Bahrain race weekend, the only way this prediction could go wrong is if Felipe skips the weekend altogether...

  • me16/12/2009 at 16:46

3G is important for data. Can have strong phone signal but no 3G at all. Just EDGE or, even worse, crappy GPRS

Did he have any mishaps with anyone's driving? ;)

Well apparently he was going to drive an Evora around the Lotus test track after his visit, so who knows. But he was alright when he was looking around.

    Did he have any photos?

He was actually being filmed by a film crew for the Lotus F1 site. I actually stood next to him when he and Clive Chapman were watching a short video on Lotus' history in F1, and they filmed it. Although I'll most likely be out of shot because of the angle they shot them at. But Clive introduced me to him and I shook his hand and said hi.

Jarno's a really nice guy in real ife and it was great to meet him. Clive did tell me when he was giving me a lift back home (he offered before you ask) that they do want to try and get Heikki down to CTL at some point and that they would, in his words, "try to get him down on a day when I'm there". :D

There is an honesty in what is said - Brawn was no David in a David vs Goliath. The irony of the comment is Virgin (nee Manor) are saying you do not need wind tunnels and the Brawn is the best evidence that exists that you do.

Just remember next year's Merc was designed with a budget a fraction of the 2009 car so they are unlikely to repeat the success of this season.

Manor comes in, Virgin sponsor, Branson says "look what we did last year, look what we're going to do this year" he has to tell people that what happened with Brawn won't happen this year, he has to tell them that Brawn's car was the most expensive and most worked on. he's not necessarily criticising it, just telling it how it is

    huh?

  • Bassano16/12/2009 at 20:08

Nope, most use a wind tunnel

Let the results speak for themselves then

In the mean time, shut it Mr Wirth!

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 20:09

I really dislike this man already

He was never very popular when he was in F1 before. He just managed it faster this time

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 20:09

In the mean time, shut it Mr Wirth!

    Agreed. Grrrrrrrr.

  • Rich16/12/2009 at 20:09

    Honda Brawn used 6 tunnels

Up to six wind tunnels simultaneously - is there not three at their factory alone?

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 20:09

What does he get out of saying it, though (over than covering his backside)?

That is precisely what he is doing

  • Rich16/12/2009 at 20:10

No, I'd say it was just cheap and very last minute

Still puts McLarens horrible jackets, but then I like Team Brawn outfits even though that was also last minute design.

  • Bassano16/12/2009 at 20:10

In the mean time, shut it Mr Wirth!

    Agreed. Grrrrrrrr.

I can see 'Wirth-less' being used very early on in the season :D

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 20:10

It's served them well (enough) in LMP

Has it? Have his cars been better than th Audis or the Peugeots? They have done well in America but they don't exactly have stacks of high calibre competition there.

  • Bassano16/12/2009 at 20:11

    Brawns are good, I agree

not unless they're the size of a shoe box.

  • Jon Waldock16/12/2009 at 20:11

Has it? Have his cars been better than th Audis or the Peugeots? They have done well in America but they don't exactly have stacks of high calibre competition there.

    I knew that was coming.

To think that they have the same development budgets as Audi and Pug is silly

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 20:12

    Honda Brawn used 6 tunnels

    huh?

They had work done in two in Brackley, one at Super Aguri, one or two at Honda in Japan and one at Dome.

Unfair comparision - the Acura is petrol which had no chance against the diesels of Audi and Peugeot...

  • startledbunny16/12/2009 at 20:12

That is precisely what he is doing

I still don't see how he could have improved after the last time he was in F1. Even after the other disciplines.

  • Jon Waldock16/12/2009 at 20:12

    also true

Not sure whether they have two or three at the factory

  • jpancoast16/12/2009 at 20:12

I like this. The more people talk about Virgin, Lotus, and Wirth, the less people are asking "where's USF1?"

    ;)

  • RG16/12/2009 at 20:12

    Now, where's USF1 again?

  • Rich16/12/2009 at 20:13

oopps... and Glock... i like Glock.. *ehem*... he's not as attractive though...

All my female friends think he is quite dishy - oh and they think Jenson is scruffy - so it takes all types. The other driver they mention is Mark Webber despite the big ears.

  • Jon Waldock16/12/2009 at 20:13

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 20:14

To think that they have the same development budgets as Audi and Pug is silly

So how is that different to F1? It's fine for him to day he has produced cars using CFD only but he is now saying wind tunnels are archaic and Williams are stupid for using them. He hasn't won anything significant with his methods yet.

  • startledbunny16/12/2009 at 20:14

I half agree, but the 2 things that spring to mind are 1) People = Ability to do more things and 2) Petrol vs Diesel

  • Bassano16/12/2009 at 20:18

    Trousers, Mouth, No, All

One aspect of Mark I really respect is that his partner is not the typical glamour item most F1 drivers have.

I am not. I am saying that he should not be shooting his mouth of before he has proved anything. It's not like he was a great success the last time he was in F1. He could end up being the weak link in that whole team in more ways than one.

don't think runs Windows which is just as good - you don't want it crashing. Mind you, the spinning colour wheel of death is also an option if you want to make a mac reference. not sure why you would though :)

it seems every couple of days there's some f1 going on - man this off season is crazy.

  • Rich16/12/2009 at 20:26

In way I admire Manor (now Virgin) they are taking a very brave route of not using a wind tunnel, if they have some success (e.g. like being as fast as say Renault) it will prove a point that you can reduce F1 budgets. Wind Tunnels cost silly amounts of money which is why Chip Ganassi used disused tunnels to test their aerodynamics.

I think it's one of those issues - if it comes off, you're going to look pretty smart and if it doesn't...well you know the rest. Mind you, we've seen plenty of well designed cars get adjustments within a couple of races based on actual race data. So if you take the away series of races (the first european race is number 5), I think they'll be in much the same boat and I have no idea of the pros and cons of either method, other than $$$$

Even with a wind tunnel you can get it wrong - Hondas before Brawn and this season - the first BMW Sauber - the Hinwil wind tunnel is still fairly state of the art and no F1 team has a more powerful supercomputer than Albert 4. Having said that BMW Sauber did introduce a virtually new car (entirely new chassis) mid season so bad was the KERS one.

  • Journeyer16/12/2009 at 20:35

But then, new parts based on actual race data are usually run through a windtunnel first before sent to the track. So there is still some variance there between their methods.

I really like the spirit that these bright new teams (Nick Wirth excepted) are putting into their pre-race preparations. I have a feeling that Virgin and Lotus will be a credit to F1, even if their cars turn out to be a tad slow to start with.

The spat with Williams - actually was started by Patrick Head dumping on Virgin Racing - they imply answered back. The rivalry between Virgin and Lotus add some fun. If they get to 1.5 secs of the front runners they will be doing well.

I can't believe that with all of us looking for F1 news none of us knew about Head having a go at Virgin or Wirth having a go back until tofay.

Actually I realise that we do not have a direct quote of what Patrick said - I do have a quote from Tony Fernandes though

"(Virgin are) very convinced that is the way forward, that you can do it all with CFD," Fernandes told Reuters last week. "I am from the aviation business, mate. You can't. You've got to have a wind tunnel."

evening Giggles, Oh no! did you go outside?

Indeed... Lou and Lukeh you came up in a meeting I had with a big company!!! I was having a meeting with a company (one that sponsors an F1 team) and the new account manager I was being introduced to was being all pro and everything talking about lots of important business stuff and then half way through she turned to her collegue and said... "I've got it... He's Michael McIntyre". Right in the middle of a sentence!!!

She said, "I bet you get it all the time!"

And I said, "well I do but yesterday some friends of mine thought they had seen me in Hyde Park and chased after me only to discover that it was Michael!"

She said, "how sweet, you even have the kind of stories that Michael would tell".

After the meeting we were walking down the corridor and she said to me, "say something Michael would say!!!" Crazy!

  • Alex Andronov16/12/2009 at 22:32

    @ Steven & Mr C.

Yesterday i signed off and you left some kind comments afterwards. I am just going to reply to those. Firstly Mr C. I am indeed a chap. and i do believe yourself and others on here do have the cynical blood flowing through you.

To Steven, i'm not actually that new to F1. Have been a hardcore fan since the mid 90s. basically since i could stay up late and watch the races, (i live in australia) and didnt have to worry about school the next day. we dont have as much press covereage as you guys in Europe, so my opinions may not be as well informed as yours.

In my defence at sounding naive yesterday, i dont think i have the cynical F1 blood running through me. I actually look at the thing quite positively most of the time. which is unusual for me, as i am a cynic at heart.

So my defence of some of Max's actions, in my eyes were valid.

on the point of the 48million entry fee, i dont think this was an added rule with the aim of enticeing manufacturers, i think at the time, it was designed to ensure that only well funded teams would join and stay in. this happened after teh Loloa pull out after one race in 97 i think it was. The 48 mill was paid back in full incrementally to any new teams who joined. And their was only toyota who did in that period. the other new teams all took over old ones.

can't argue with that. i will say i didn't used to be this cynical. f1 made me this way :)

What is the difference between only allowing in teams who can afford to deposit $48 million and keeping the little guys out. It's the same thing. Only big companies need apply. Sponsors don't write cheques for the full amount of their sponsorship up front so a normal racing team simply would not have $48 million lying around at a time when they have to hire staff, build a factory, buy million of dollars worth of capital equipement etc. Lola was a convenient scapegoat

  • Lukeh16/12/2009 at 22:40

Sux that F1 made you that way. All i get out here is F1 racing, and i used to check my news on itv-f1, until i stumbled across you guys on iTunes.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 22:43

I still dont see it your way Steven, sorry. Maybe in hindsight (which is always 20/20) it worked that way.

i wouldn't be sorry if max walked away and never was heard from again though.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 22:47

Nah, i wouldnt care either actually. I was sceptical of Jean todt leading teh FIA, but at least he seems to be sticking to promises so far.

Yeah that poster of branson in teh dress and fernandez comment "coffee, tea, or me" had me rolling around laughing. I'll be going for Virgin for sure. i like Bransons attitude. And being a straight and happily married male, i now gotta agree with Mrs C. di grassi is one good looking mutha. Im comfortable with my sexuality to admit that.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 22:48

I cannot wait till Max writes a book and fills us in on all the details. (if they can be trusted) LOL.

Like I said last night many people myself included objected to the aggressive recruitment of manufacturers at the expense of the privateers from the first day it was obvious that Bernie and Max were pursuing that strategy. There is no hindsight involved.

The various strategies they pursued drove down the number of teams for no good reason. My attitude has always been that if someone can turn up with a car that can pass scrutineering and a driver with a superlicence they should be allowed to race. I have never seen the need to artificially limit the number of cars. In the 1980s at one point we had 39 cars entering races. Max and his predecessor managed to half that number.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 22:55

but surely that many cars would dilute the talen and teh racing. Sure the teams at the front mightve provided entertainment, but the guys at teh back are just wasting everyones time.

Out of USF1 lotus and virgin, one of them will be gone within 2 years. or sold out.

Just another topic, will there ever be a season again where a new team enters, wins both championships, and nicks off? becasue that how the history books will show it.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:02

but surely that many cars would dilute the talen and teh racing. Sure the teams at the front mightve provided entertainment, but the guys at teh back are just wasting everyones time.

Out of USF1 lotus and virgin, one of them will be gone within 2 years. or sold out.

That is how Jordan got in for example. They had to pre-qualify for the first half season then their results were good enough they got a guaranteed shot at qualifying and pushed someone else down. F1 should be about the pursuit of excellence. Why should Force India and Toro Rosso be guaranteed grid slots forever despite the fact that they contribute nothing? Prodrive and Epsilon Euskadi are serious professional racers. Why should they be banned from F1? Why should they not be allowed to turn up and prove they are good enough.

The current system allows teams to be rubbish and not be under any threat. Surely allowing the likes of Prodrive to come in as a serious competitor and pushing out the worse team strenghthens the sport rather than weakening it?

  • me16/12/2009 at 23:03

but surely that many cars would dilute the talen and teh racing. Sure the teams at the front mightve provided entertainment, but the guys at teh back are just wasting everyones time.

    i'd agree with that.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 23:06

Thanks Mr C. but i also agree with Steven, David richards is brillaint and was even able to manage turning BAR into soemthing respectable till he got turfed. i think he spent 10 minutes at benetton too.

prodrive should be there for sure.

but again 39 cars is not healthy. especially back when only 6 cars got points.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:06

but surely that many cars would dilute the talen and teh racing. Sure the teams at the front mightve provided entertainment, but the guys at teh back are just wasting everyones time.

We have major teams massively cutting headcount. Surely it would be better to keep these people in F1 with new teams so they keep learning and improving so that they can work for a top team one day than driving them out of the sport and losing their ability? There has been a lot of talk about Nick Wirth today. Under current rules introduced by his Simtek partner his team would never have been allowed into the sport and he would have no credibility whatever.

  • Amy16/12/2009 at 23:08

the people at the back can waste my time all they want if they are a heikki or a di licious :D ;)

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:09

but again 39 cars is not healthy. especially back when only 6 cars got points.

There are two ways to achieve fewer cars. The current method which says if you are on the inside you have a permanent place or you allow everyone in and the weak will be forced out. I see no benefit to teams being given guaranteed frid slots. Look at Minardi. They were last in the championship every year Paul Stoddart was in charge. What did anyone gain from that. Let Dave Richards and Joan Villadelprat enter their teams and push out the Stoddarts of the world.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 23:10

But they have helmets on Amy. so you like the design? LOL

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:10

the people at the back can waste my time all they want if they are a heikki or a di licious :D ;)

Would you not rather they were with a Prodrive or Epsilon Euskadi that might move them forward and you would see them more?

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 23:15

But with such a fast paced competitive environment steven, there will always be a weak link, whether it is minardi, simtek, forti, etc.

no matter who is in, there has been and always will be a perennial back runner. i think this is good for the sport in a way. Underdogs are important in sport. it keeps fans in.

i think you speak a lot from the business perspective Steven, i think i speak more from the sporting side.

  • Amy16/12/2009 at 23:17

ooh i do like the idea of seeing them more. I wonder if id get arrested if i lived outside crown towers for a week

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:19

i think you speak a lot from the business perspective Steven, i think i speak more from the sporting side.

My interest is only in the sport an not the business. I want the best teams we can possibly have so there is more competition. I see no point in teams being guaranteed a slot when all they do is run round at the back getting in the way when there are other teams who could come in and challenge their position. Dave Richards and Joan Villadelprat know how to run teams successfully. If they were allowed to compete they would be running midfieled in no time flat. Neither of those guys would run a team that was permanently at the back of the grid.

  • KerbRider16/12/2009 at 23:22

so the teams that are now midfield would be at the back. No matter what, unless budget caps come in properly, macca and fazza will be at the top. Yawn!

Are you going to be at albert park this year? id love to meet you guys and chat like this. would be fun, gets the juices flowing

thank you for telling me what you know ;)

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:27

so the teams that are now midfield would be at the back. No matter what, unless budget caps come in properly, macca and fazza will be at the top. Yawn!

There will always be teams at the back. My objection is that teams who contribute nothing have a guaranteed slot while teams that could challenge are banned.

New teams used to come in and win and push down the previous winners. The reason Ferrari and McLaren have been so strong is because no new competitive teams are allowed in. Look at the history of the sport and teams that won championships were pushed out by new teams. Tyrrell used to be dominant as did Brabham and Williams.

  • Jon Waldock16/12/2009 at 23:28

thank you for telling me what you know ;)

that would be nothing :P merchanise is probably a good shout

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 23:29

It just means they ordered the stand before Mercedes bought them. They are bound to have the Brawn car there though

I think you have more chance of getting Brawn merchandise online than at the show. I would expect them to be pushing Mercedes at the show. Probably the first or second week in January after Xmas is out of the way the online shop will slash prices. Keep your eyes open.

Good question. I was forgetting the show was before the launch. That may complicate things.

I would still expect to see a load of Merc branding at the show but since it is before the launch they may try to unload Brawn merchandise.

    Hmm?

I'm not sure what to think of her anymore. As Donna Noble, she is utterly awesome. But my god she was really, really annoying on NTMB.

Max always introduced new rules without considering their implications. This is just the kind of knee jerk reaction Max would be proud of.

it's pricey but it's worth it. it's over a year old and still no model has come close to bettering it. not even the model designed to replace it.

am having serious problems decided which camera i like more.. the Nikon coolpix P90... or the Olympus E-P1... the Nikon looks amazing and has an incredible zoom.... but the Olympus is very pretty, has interchangeable lenses (although not sure i would really buy more lenses for it) but no viewfinder...

The Nikon is also a bit cheaper...

    My shutter noise is awesome!!

Aww my poor phone crapy camera phone :( It will forever get my support with it's shutter noise!

  • lou17/12/2009 at 00:04

Which brand do most F1 photographers use?

f1 photographers mainly use Dslrs.. these are digital cameras (as my previous digital camera is slowly dying a painful death of old age and wear and tear). From what i can gather a great percentage of F1 photographers use Canon, but that could be because Canon often supply the lenses etc to the agencies and photographers. I've seen a few with Nikons though :)
