We have arrived at Tuesday, and my first job is to remind you that the deadline for the season review submissions is up! Technically it was yesterday, but I forgot to remind you, so I've extended it by a day. If you haven't already, and want to call in your thoughts on the season just past, there are more details here. Now, let's get on with the good stuff:
- Trulli and Kovalainen were confirmed at Lotus yesterday. It happened in the early hours UK time, and must be our earliest breakout thread ever. I find the driver selection odd, but still, it's good for familiar faces to retain seats.
- Massa is going to get back behind the wheel of the F2007, with demo tyres on. Felipe said he wanted to get back behind the wheel of an F1 car before the end of the year, so he's grateful to Ferrari for giving him the opportunity.
- The Schumacher rumours continue to be fuelled with Ferrari reported as saying they would not stand in the seven times world champ's way... at the moment. That doesn't mean it would be a straightforward switch to Mercedes of course, but I suppose it is one less barrier to entry for him.
That'll do it for now. Don't forget the Advent Calendar is still ongoing, and today, I know for a fact we are finally moving away from the Hungarian GP. Hoorah! I will see you in the comments.
All hail the new Daily.
I have written short notes for the Review, but I know at this hour I'll struggle to form verbal sentences in the right order or at an audible volume, so will endeavour to phone something in tomorrow after work.
Woohoo, it's the 15th :)
i think it's only fair to have an update.... so it's now 37 days before the 50 day count down can begin :)
one sec lukeh.
Wassup?
can you just check that is okay pls:

You'd understand if it were for a now-famous driver.
Bonus fact: Jamie Davies went into GT racing and is the only driver I know of who comes from my area.
According to the www.feederseries.co.uk stats someone searched fortec motorsport and found my site and so i was trying to find out what page of google it was on if you search that.

This guy has signed for GP2 for 2011?!
does seem a bit premature..
I'm going to the MSA on Wednesday, and i'm quite excited.
Just thought i'd put that out there

Anything fun?
I've been bought before the National Motorsport council ;) nah kidding.
Tour and a talk from Allan Dean Lewis MBE and lunch and potentially to talk to some guys about some Marketing bits and pieces. Should be good
heheh
no idea who that is. sounds useful though.
First time ever ?

Sorry 'bout the new nickname Mrs C. I know you think otherwise.
Hello again, everyone.
Just going back to the FIA Gala F1 video:
Does anyone know the songs for the following bits of the video?
1. Liegate
2. 6 different winners in 6 races (after Back by Dope Demand and before the Fixgate/They Don't Care About Us section)
Morning everyone :)
Good Morning
I left my phone at home today. Had some pretty bad doohickey withdrawals!
it was awfully quiet during the night without you :(
I also fell asleep early last night so I think I've been away for 12 hours! It physically hurts!
And now I have to leave. Headping yourself somebody to entertain you. :)
Bye
byee!
if you are bored, and need something to do, maybe you could look at my questions to mr. c about 8 hours ago re ustream viewer and how to get a channel listed in their favourites so I can watch giggles from my iPhone
Very #MFC - the USGS is using Twitter to figure out people's reaction to Earthquakes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8413128.stm
I normally just called my mum ;)
Morning all.
Morning :)
I like the video because I saw two of the Backstreet Boys in it. Can't help you with the songs though :)
Here's the latest from Information is Beautiful - as a Data Analyst, I heart that site and the way it displays information so visually. It's my goal every day ;)
Aww fudge. Thanks for trying, though. :)
Ah, I missed out on lots of gaming stuff. I should go to bed early more often!
2010 Sporting Regulations
Read up! :D
This is exactly the sort of thing that would make Nick very nervous... Rather interesting though:
http://www.boingboing.net/2009/12/14/change-blindness-exp.html
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voAntzB7EwE
So, the only unexpected bit is the new "Massa Replacement" rules?
Looks like. Some other minor changes I see, but no biggie.
Oh, this is significant:
Did anyone mention that Benson has put two and two together and made ten about Schumacher returning to F1?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2009/12/schumacher_returning_looking_i.html
He even admits he doesn't have much to go on...
Gavin, you might want to switch threads. ;)
Also, this is old, from last week, I think. Still, I hate it that he might be right - again.
there was quite the discussion about the lameness of "If that sounds vague, I'm sorry, but I was told in confidence and cannot reveal any more"
Oh for Piquet's sake! Why do I keep doing that?
Have moved the comments.
Thank you - and sorry (again :( )
Some how I missed that even though I was reading them at the time?
you disappeared for a few hours and it appears to have been around that time.
[don't panic this is a joke]
Bear Attack in Churchill , Manitoba , Canada .
These are pictures of an actual polar bear attack.
The pictures were taken while people watched and could do nothing to stop the attack!
Reports from the local newspaper say that the victim will make a full recovery.
The photos are on the drop:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/polar-jpg
Ah - I may not have commented but I was reading, because about 10-20 comments down is one I recognise...
awwwww
Want one.
That's Knut!!!
In Berlin...
I have seen him.
another reason to go to the berlin zoo? well I never!
How is Knut these days? I heard he wasn't doing too well...
He looks a bit different nowadays.
Why is he not white?
polar bears have black skin and transparent hair
he was whiter when we saw him...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kat_hall/3654813637/in/set-72157618473374070/
There are more pictures around then: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kat_hall/sets/72157618473374070/
Without wanting to give creedence to the Schumacher to Mercedes rumours and despite the fact that I still think it makes no sense for Mercedes to hire him (if he does well - it's because he's Schumacher, if he does badly - it's because the car is bad). But putting all that to one side...
I was thinking about what it would mean for Rosberg. Is it good for him to have Schumacher as a team mate? He could learn a lot from him. Could he even go faster than him if Schumacher is injured? Would this be good or bad for his reputation?
any advice on other things I should do in Berlin? :D
Mr C asked the exact same thing yesterday. He thinks it's bad for Nico. If Schumi beats him, Germany laughs at him. If he beats Schumi, Germany will hate him. Although Kathi disagreed with the latter.
Mr C also reminded us of Keke and Nico's statements at Monaco 2006, which probably means they don't get on very well at all.
hullo :) no train problems so far, woohoo! Although i refuse to jinx myself now...
oooh Christine Lucas de Licious is in London today...
Hello... Are you going to meet up with de licious?
What's he doing? Apart from being delicious, obviously?
Virgin launch? That would be today.
he said, "important day, I will keep you updated".
Aha!
Oh lord. Better start thinking about breakout threads again.
im going to london and manor are launching in london.. 2 + 2... :P
No me and lou are meeting up :) of course. Although if i do see mr branson and he is unable to find de licious then...
Tell him you know about SQL and McLaren are interested in snapping you up. Maybe you can start a bidding war?
Random thought:
Of the 4 actual new teams, Virgin and Lotus have 2 drivers already. Campos has 1, and plenty of the candidates for the 2nd. USF1... has 1 who MAY drive for them, and no idea for the 2nd seat. What gives?
In other news, I totally want this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0012D5CH0/
Here we go: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80577
Bah. I'll be right back with a breakout then.
more photos please.
Don't know. I've never been there. How much time do you have?
no baseball caps and suits?
Good morning all
We're deploying an escape slide in the hangar today
I might try to stream it
3 days probably. Any advice on Munich then? Thats your neck of the woods isn't it?
He's in love
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/15/virgin-racing-confirm-lucas-di-grassi-for-2010/
Tries to remember... Drink beer?... At the zoo make sure you are there for polar bear feeding time it was the best bit of the holiday.
Seeing the war memorials was actually a great expericence, as was seeing the berlin wall. I didn't like the checkpoint charlie museum and thought that was a waste of time.
Don't know, only been there 3 times ;) but I will investigate.
They were ready a bit sooner than I thought. It's on my streaming channel. Action happens just after the 3 min mark.
I've always wanted to slide down one of those. Just not keen on the idea of crashing first.
We used to let th apprentices slide down but someone injured themselves a while back so it was stopped
so its true you have to do it with the proper technique? I had heard that :D
Oh yes
I tried to watch your video and it doesn't work for me. The same still image freezes for over 2 minutes and then it jumps to another picture and 2 people magically teleport out of shot.
although I still get the action at the end, just a little jerky :D
The 3G signal is patchy at best here
Need to play with this UStream app a bit more, I think
your job looks cool though. I find big planes AWESOMELY cool but then again I don't see them every day.
They're just complicated buses with wings essentially
I understand the science behind it but I look at them and it amazes me that they stay up there.
I was referring to the glamour but, it still kinda amazes me even
Does someone have to fold it all back up again?
hoooraaaay my coming to the BSB show with me friend is confirmed. She was worried it was too much money but I convinced her by offering to pay for some of her ticket. Today at work I watched the Top 20 songs of 1997 and I took As Long As You Love Me as a sign that everything would be A-OK :D
We roll it up, put it in a container and send it to the workshop. They inspect, test and fold it up nicely with a recharged pressure cylinder
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8413557.stm
C'mon people, we can do it!!!
BBC really hosed Nick Wirth in this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8412892.stm
Shame really, I thought the man was quite successful myself?
...up until the point when the X-Factor CD comes out.
Ooo so do I :)
Yay!
Rooting for RATM?
As a Twitterer pointed out, RATM are on Sony, which boasts Cowell's company as a sub-division – so he wins either way.
Oh sweet lord - that's why I dislike the industry so much :(
Sony would be a winner. Cowell... maybe not so much? Would hurt his ego a bit, I'm sure.
Don't get Joe and DT started on this subject! They reckon his Simtek was a deathtrap.
Indeed. This is exactly the same trick he played last year with the awful cover of Hallelujah. Which Cowell owned the rights to as well as owning the rights to the original which got to number 2 in the charts.
of all the songs though...
that wasn't even cool when i was a kid.
Well I'm certainly not cool in any way but I do like a bit of RATM...
But it really was a deathtrap, wasn't it? 1 death, and more than a few injured.
Whoops... left a comment on Joe's blog saying that I think Nick Wirth was quite good - although, I had the Acura more in mind...
I thought myself it was an odd choice, surely they could choose something with broader appeal. My favourite radio station plays it all the time and it's about the only thing they play that I'm not a fan of.
Got to love some doctor who :)
Hahaha! His reply will be very interesting. :D
i think people who are buying this are very much missing the point.
i assumed that people were rallying against crappy re-releases in support of original artists. that track must be 20 years old and they haven't written a decent thing since.
Is it really 20 years old? Jeez!
Whereas if there was an e-campaign to get Ernie by Benny Hill to number one, I would sign up...
i thought they were rallying against cheesy mainstream songs always getting it. but then, i could be wrong.
I'm telling you SonyBMG have started this campagn. I'd put money on it. It drives up sales of both songs because it keeps it in the news. Notice nobody is putting out Christmas songs anymore because of X-Factor and at the same time two years in a row an "internet" campaign starts... I'm sure it's not a coinkydink
17 years old, I think?
LOVE IT!
Close enough!
my favourite album is 20 years old in 2011. I might buy it a cake.
Ah I was just thinking that after StuC pointed it out that both were Sony...
100% agree.
people are stupid.
Sign me up for that list then.
It'll certainly be Wirth looking out for.
Wot Alex said.
Cowell keeps making the money, no? And American Idol starts in January...
:P
I am glad Season 4 of Dexter is over and I don't have to keep being reminded of how John Lithgow looks like Legard. #blamelukeh
I think we should make the Mark Ratcliffe and Sally Boazman cover of Bangers and Mash number 1! It's all for charidee. Actually maybe the mad Peter Sellers & Sophia Loren song is better: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bangers-And-Mash/dp/B001IJSCN4/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1260877212&sr=8-14
What?
Season 4? When? Where?
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1323876
Dear Sidepoders.............
This is my christmas present to you
Oh Showtime until Sunday just gone. Or somewhere different in your part of the world.
Personally, if Rage get to No.1 instead ITV's by-products, then I'm a happy man
I don't care a hoot as to who's behind it
It's an X-Factor backlash. A worthy cause, IMHO
Yes but they still win and make fools of us all that we chose such a song at christmas.
Sometimes I'm really glad I don't live in the UK anymore...
:)
Phew. Very easy to miss returning shows that are on minor channels over here. Will add it to the watch list, along with season 2 of Breaking Bad.
Who wins, ITV?
I certainly didn't choose it
Surely it only makes a fool of the people buying it?
people are easily manipulated. that's how the industry made it's money, and how they'll continue to do so.
in the same way that n'sync don't really hate bsb. it's just a concept invented to sell more records. #sorryamy
bernie could learn a lot.
Andrew Benson is saying on twitter that the virgin car was designed without a wind tunnel... He's backed this up with a link to a 404 article.
and maybe of those campaigning for others to buy it.
hehe. joe said that months and months ago.
the car was built without a wind tunnel?!
cfd.
someone hasn't been paying attention to "an aside with joe".
Sony and Cowell wins, apparently...
I never thought they hated each other, but their fans certainly seemed to ;)
That reminds me, time to purchase my tickets!
Dude, it was totally the other way round.
#notfallingforitreally
always has, always will do.
:D
It is true, Midweek Motorsport have also said it because that's how he designed the Acura ALMS Prototypes...
have I transcribed that one? It rings no bells with me yet odds are I typed every word of it.
i knew they'd use that, but cfd isnt the be all and endall, you need to see how things are in real wind life
agreed. and to defend their favourite, they'd buy more tickets/posters/albums.
how long ago was it? i cant remember anything about it
ill have to find it out. he said it was a gamble, and then the next day he blogged about it too.
Neither does a wind tunnel model, in fairness. It will be interesting to see how CFD works...
Nsyncs No Strings Attached was the best selling album of the decade. I'm totally going out tomorrow to buy more BSB albums and reverse the trend. Or not. If anyone asks those 2 BSB dvds I have belong to my mum.
here's the blog post:
Nick Wirth of Manor says that he is not going to do ANY wind tunnel testing for his 2010 Formula 1 car, arguing that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is now good enough to do all the work by computer.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/wirths-gamble/
nothing is completely exclusive to it apart from being on track, just seems odd they wouldnt use it, but if they dont have a tunnel then thats probably why
it's a good argument, we'll just see what happens
Max would be proud.
Funny you should say that... I'll bet you can't guess who the other Shareholder in Simtek was?
that was a month ago!
it's been a long month!
I probably can, yes. http://sidepodcast.com/2008/08/07/forgotten-f1-teams-simtek-grand-prix/
and this year has taken AGES to pass.
woah
(hearts) christine.
Funny to see in the comments Mr C asking if anyone is hip to bebo. Is anyone hip to Bebo anymore?
Ah so you did know. Interesting that Wirth should lead the way in a cost-effective method of designing an F1 car for a team that reports to be operating under Max's budget cap, isn't it?
F1 history can be most shocking at times...
that was over a year ago jon ;)
i shall repeat :P it's been a long year! i can't remember 2 weeks ago!
So probably it was someone in marketing who came up with the whole twitter campaign. An absolute genius! Lots Xfactor complaints? sell something to the complainers...
I think more than a few mentioned that when they came out on the initial entry list at the height of the breakaway crisis.
the four girls I lived with in 2007 all unfriended me on Bebo on the same day. It was like the ultimate snub.
i never understood it.
twas like myspace, execpt full of children.
i thought that's what myspace was?
pretty much how it's been since the beatles and stones i think.
no, they're full of teenagers. :D
ah ok
myspace was quite good for unsigned artists.
still is the case, right? not as good as it used to be, though.
was the best bit about it, and pre-spotify lots of bigger bands had some tracks on their too
mission accomplished.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/ohtheshame-jpg
This is the first ezy-ticket I have ever had that didn't have a picture of the event/artist in that little blue box. Boo.
Also as one more point... The X-Factor single gives some money to charity whereas of course the Rage against the machine one doesn't. So if you do choose the other single... http://www.justgiving.com/ratm4xmas/
Shall I not bother with the comments if I think someone has already said it then?
Thats a good idea
Not what I meant at all, Gavin. :)
all the young dudes - respec!
Should have added a ;) to that comment...
people are rallying against a TV show dominating the christmas no.1 yet again
my dad and I were trying to work out which old bands whose members are still alive haven't reformed yet. We came up with the Monkees. That would be awesome. I don't even care that they didn't play their instruments or sing or whatever.
Yeah forgot the winker didn't I?
Yep. :D
They actually wrote last train to clarkesville which is a great song.
I would have thought the best way to do that was to come up with a better song as competition.
I just remembered that I own the entire first season of their show and have only watched 1 disc of 5. Something to do over the summer!
Christmas songs have been rubbish for years - what year did we decide was the cut off point?
In other news, we have not put up our decorations or bought a tree for our home yet!
picking an unsigned artists would be much better.
someone with no industry ties whatsoever.
they wouldn't beat cowel and x-factor though, which is probably the whole point for the people lobbying for it
My mum said she really wanted to make our place Christmassy since I am coming home so she got the first live Christmas tree my parents have ever had in 30 years of marriage. She spent most of the day decorating it (outside on the deck because they make my dad sneeze) and then she decided it was too spindly and thin looking so she took all the decorations off again and threw it away.
no way!!!?!
GASP!!
ratm are hardly a massive draw. i'd assumed they'd broken up 15years ago.
Oh my god!!!
they are a well known name though. i dont know anything about them, but i know of them
Well funnily enough this has happened practically. The Donny Darko guy was Christmas number 1... Can't quite remember his name sounds like Michael Stipe... Wore a hat.
#safety
Don't wear a scarf when karting {Comment #39}
I would have thought that was common sense (not wearing a scarf). Anyone with that little sense shouldn't be allowed within 10 metres of a kart...
Gary Jules - Mad World?
That's the one...
i don't think it would make a difference.
this campaign is working because someone with money behind it, is pushing it "virally".
Never heard of them, and it's not an enticing name.
they weren't cool, the first time around. you're not missing anything.
They have Christmas pine trees growing at the back of their property so she could get another one but she was angry by then. I told her that I want pretty external lights on the deck but my dad refuses to put any nails into the wood and he also doesn't want to have to open a window to run a power cord outside. Apparently he is installing some external powerpoints but the the electrician isn't coming until next year :D
their reunion this year (last year?) was pretty big apparently. I was just angry because I liked Audioslave.
only those of us who get sucked into choosing at all..
For those who like their facts...
2 years ago no rival bid for sales
Number 1 record Leon Jackson - When You Believe - 275,000
1 year ago rival bid with Cowell owned Hallelujah performed by Jeff Buckley
Number 1 sold...
576,000
The rivalry is pretty good for business.
Should a driver use more than eight engines he will drop ten places on the starting grid at the first Event during which each additional engine is used. If two such additional engines are used during a single Event the driver concerned will drop ten places on the starting grid at that Event and at the following Event. {Comment #61}
That's the clause introduced to stop people doing what Red bull considered (but didn't do) last year: using two extra engines in the same Saturday morning session to allow them to only take one penalty.
You'll have PowerPoint outside your house? Will it display slideshows? ;)
Or it could be that Leon Jackson just really flopped in the market... which he did even after Christmas. ;)
They re-formed, I heard...
2007. I seriously thought it was this year or 2008 at the most. Where is time going?
But they never were supposed to be cool - they were anti-establishment or something?
and they haven't written a new song since?
...and signed to sony.
People forget the entire idea of a chart was to make more money.
The guy who owns the domain name for the ragefactor site until recently worked for Sony BMG. He quit a few months ago to start his own "online branding" company.
:D
:D
:D
Kinda ironic, isn't it?
Doesn't change the fact I like three of their songs, I guess...
the only other song of theirs I can name off the top of my head is Bombtrack. and that one off guitar hero (nb: may not be its actual name)
Did he miss the reports and quotes from ages ago, and does he not know what Wirth has spent the last 15 yrs doing?
He probably only likes F1 and doesn't know?
As a Twitterer pointed out, RATM are on Sony, which boasts Cowell's company as a sub-division – so he wins either way. {Comment #130}
Which is one reason why I prefer my form of protesting - not to buy any music until I hear a song I actually like...
I have wrapped up my silly taxpayer funded tyre gauge in Christmas paper and labelled it "to: whoever wants it. from: amy"
Easiest christmas gift ever.
am considering buying "the millennium prayer", as it's the most christmassy thing i can find that's still owned by an independent label.
Christmas songs have been rubbish for years - what year did we decide was the cut off point?
29 years ago (i.e. 1980) - but anything by Queen was deemed exempt from the rule (so 1991 does not count for the purposes of the rule).
So no WHAM! or Band Aid then?
The rivalry is pretty good for business. {Comment #247}
It helped that Alexandra's effort was vaguely tuneful, whereas I couldn't say the same for Leon.
noooooooooooooooooooo
oops.
It's snowing BTW :D
i may have to hit you when I see you. just to get it out of my system.
noted.
my kid sister was on it, then very recently moved to facebook.. she just turned 13
its funny because you won't probably remember that by tomorrow so come 8 months time you'll be like 'what was that for?'
That's what happened when the BBC designed a webpage without testing it in a windtunnel, I think he has a point
!!!
I think it helps that a lot of people have already heard of the song. This seems to have come via Twitter and a lot of Twitter campaigns seem to fall flat. The lyrics may also have something to do with it.
Then he isn't doing his job. He's had months to research the man.
That was clear when he started the gossip column!
Did anyone mention this about Peter of the Rose needing more money or he'll lose the Campos drive? http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80578
aww hedgehog.
hedgehog?
de la rosa.
Why do you call him hedgehog? Because it sounds like Pedro?
twas in this show:
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/19/f1-debrief-he-brings-along-the-pigs/
Pah. Memory Fail for Gavin today.
:)
I actually thought you were using hedgehog as a swear word :)
nope. that's exactly what they said.
So no WHAM! or Band Aid then? {Comment #267}
WHAM didn't make Christmas No. 1, so we ignored it in the discussion due to the limited definition in use, if I remember the discussion correctly. (Perhaps that makes it an honorary non-Christmas song?)
Band Aid - Your Mileage May Vary. I find it something of a curate's egg, almost by definition (there's invariably some artists who ruin it and other artists who do their lines excellently.
You know you are too cool when you have the Library's number in your phone
I'm loving the suggestion that Schumacher is set to have a run out in a 2-year old Mercedes GP before deciding. Either way you look at it, the non-existence of a 2-year old Mercedes GP or the fact that it could actually be a Honda RA108, it's got to be the funniest rumour of the year.
:D
JA is saying Merc may be looking at a privately-owned 2007 car (i.e. not necessarily a Honda).
pah! far too sensible a suggestion.
what will that tell schumi that the f2007 didn't?
Whether his head is going to fall off at 4G or not?
Did anyone mention this about Peter of the Rose needing more money or he'll lose the Campos drive? {}
Somehow that doesn't inspire me with large amounts of confidence. I know the Spanish companies probably all want to give Alonso money, but still...
ahh right.
You want tickets don't you? :-P
in that case he's not confident about his health at all then.
i want to be his best mate. clearly.
I'm not sure it's like that.
He can walk around fine, and he's probably in good shape, but you dont know how your neck is until you try it.
can i volunteer to help?
going to hang a labrador from his neck?
couldn't hurt.
tell that to the RSPCA
he might be, but merc might not be.
when i said "you try it" i wasnt meaning specifically you ;)
ooh. fair point.
interesting to see if Rosberg has a run out as well, might just be worried he's lost it
well, we know he's lost his mind :)
comes with the job I think
does anyone know what that site is that lists the motorsport deaths of each year? if steven was around he'd know. cant remember for the life of me
^^doh!
i did realised the pun afterwards ;)
I'm loving the suggestion that Schumacher is set to have a run out in a 2-year old Mercedes GP before deciding. Either way you look at it, the non-existence of a 2-year old Mercedes GP or the fact that it could actually be a Honda RA108, it's got to be the funniest rumour of the year. {Comment #293}
And I suppose Michael is supposed to drive this hunk of junk (assuming it is the RA108) and say "You can tell Ross didn't direct this design, can't you?"
Jon, with comments like that you'll be the death of me :D
corrected
the jokes keep coming ;)
what will that tell schumi that the f2007 didn't? {Comment #297}
That he can still mildly subvert the regulations when he wants?
/cynic
This is a good point, Schumi could damage his reputation by coming back...
imagine if there was no cheating all season!
Would be funny if he flung it around the track and made Button and Rubens look bad.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8414026.stm
Timo said it, so it must be true
Let's say that somehow Michael wins the title in 2010.
Would it make the rest of the field look bad getting beaten by a (albeit legendary) 41-year old guy who hadn't raced competitively for 3 seasons?
i don't think he'll beat lewis in a month of sundays.
I don't know, but it's bad for the sport if he has no clear successor...
it's a hypothetical question. and while i think it's a big mistake to come back, if steven roy believes he still has it, it's still a possibility. stranger things have happened...
he left in 06, and he didn't have a clear successor.
has it harmed the sport? in some ways, yes. in others, no. it depends how you see it.
Of course it would!
Alonso beat him two years in a row. This was good, because it meant that somebody could beat him and therefore the calibre of the drivers was not lowered...
Excellent point. But then Alonso got beaten by Lewis in 07, which kinda put the "clear successor" storyline in doubt.
allegedly he was forced of his own team.
i wasn't referring to Ferrari per se, but the grid as a whole (i.e. who succeeded Michael as the sport's leading figure).
Not really, because Alonso was the marker - so it validated Lewis's talent.
Isn't good that there is no clear successor?
It definitely did. But then, you don't have a clear number one.
Again, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It just depends on what you're looking for - either compelling rivalries, or a Tiger-like dominance.
Been talking to his many lady friends?
Oh, you mean the golf.
Federer vs Nadal or a Tiger? Not a difficult choice surely?
Ryan Giggs isn't THAT old
OK, wrong name. Lance Armstrong-like dominance.
agreed.
In golf's case, Tiger's absence seems to make the game more... boring. At least for the casual fan.
well... it's golf, isn't it?
More boring! As if that were possible ;)
I don't mean a dominator - I mean the fact that someone beat him meant that the talent pool in F1 was still high - and the fact that Lewis beat him meant that there was another really talented driver in F1. In fact, I would go so far as saying there are 4 or 5 drivers that could beat Schumi fair and square...
Does Schumi do fair and square? ;-)
have a press release from lotus:
"Martin Brundle visits Lotus to drive the award-winning Evora"
uh-huh... yeah, scott told us yesterday.
very
Right i need your help!
We've split what we're doing (Motorsport wise) into;
Educate
Race
Promote
and we need one more that is basically "Industry" but that doesnt fit into the punchy 4 word saying that we're looking for.
Any ideas?
Develop?
Produce?
a resounding yes for "Develop" from Gord and Myself. Thank you mr journeyer
I wish people would stop agreeing with my comment, just keeps reminding about the terrible typo, use this one if you must
:D
Glad to be of help Mr Waldock. :)
Race
Industry
Promote
Educate
RIPE?
OK I'll re-state mine for clarity:
I don't mean a dominator - I mean the fact that someone beat him meant that the talent pool in F1 was still high - and the fact that Lewis beat him meant that there was another really talented driver in F1. In fact, I would go so far as saying there are 4 or 5 drivers that could beat Schumi fair and square...
We'll re order them ;)
You're over-thinking
go on?
I've just got back from a run/walk from my house to Barnham Broom and back. That's just over 8 miles in total. Absolutely knackered.
I like Develop, Educate, Race, Promote.
DERP.
That does roll of the tongue nicely
"Hey kid, you've got talent. I'm gonna DERP you." Sounds hilarious, I like it. :D
Promote, Educate, Race, Technology
PERT
Promote, Educate, Race, Voyage
He he he he :-)
:D
hmmmm :)
how long did it take you?
Teach, Race, Advance, INdustry
Started at about midday so I'd say about 2 & 1/2 hours
ergh. i can do 20 minutes max
It would take me all day.
What is the Andros Trophy? http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80569
snow... something.
It's an ice racing series, usually full of cars like little Renaults, Peugeots, Kia's, Toyota's, BMWs, etc. which have been modified with 4WD, high revving engines, snow tyres and 4 wheel steering. Small, but mental :P
Blimey. People race on ice... on purpose?
I was hoping for snowmobiles :)
hehe.
Not just any people - serious racers. I think Alain Prost won the Andros Trophy once or twice. Olivier Panis has raced there too (if you remember the Top Gear feature on it last series).
ice is only an issue on the roads because you go from lots of grip to none.
If you race on ice then you have none all the time
That still sounds like an issue to me.
hammond raced a bobsleigh.
or was in the bobsleigh, or something.
Exhibit A:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_OzHcGelpQ
Like I said - small but mental. And mostly sideways :D
sounds like grosjean.
:D
:D
Weirdest kind of racing I ever did see.
did you not see me chasing davidson in a golf cart?
The guy in that Skoda was going into those corners at absurd angles. Love it :D
Can I just say DERP..
Thanks :)
ahhehe
It's the Dacia Sandero!
the car control is amazing.
:D :D
yeah, yeah, I know, it isn't really.
A Dacia Duster to be exact. Looks like it's cleaning up in the series already #badpunalert
OK.
Generally, going BACKWARDS in a race is a bad thing.
Here it's just cool
Some of those guys were going backwards INTO the corner! That's insane and yet I love it :D
I love it because it's insane!
I have archives too :-)
http://toomuchracing.blogspot.com/2009/01/weekend-preview-31-jan-1-feb.html
(am at work, can't see if the vids work)
Yay!
Bikes too. Craziness.
At the archives, not being at work.
Craziest of all about this series: they've even had a 24 hour race in the past!
#notthebest24hourrace
:D
Must-watch:
Mark Webber's Christmas Message
and
Sebastian Vettel's Christmas Message
it is the craziest racing in the world!
heheh
:D Loved them!
Hey all!
Hey everyone. Am starting to get excited about Timo at Virgin now.
LOVE THAT
Thought you would. ;)
Hehehehe :D
I approve of these messages!
Would we class Mike Conway as an ex-Brawn GP young driver?
I wonder if any of the Virgin drivers were like "I want it in my contract that I get a few free rides into space!"
Which reminds me... didn't Jenson and Rubens sign up for that?
There is a page on the new Virgin site saying what they would bring on a Galactic flight. Timo's is slightly more fun than di Grassi's
http://www.motorsportmemorial.org/
#jon
you're a star thanks
Did you see the link I posted this morning about the girl who got killed by her scarf in a kart?
nope
http://news.bb...idgeshire/8412224.stm
You need to know about this in case some prospective sponsor brings it up since it was in the news.
I don't know about others, but the href for that link is actually hews.bb...idgeshire, so linky no worky.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cambridgeshire/8414066.stm
Was she karting with a scarf on do we know?
Yes. after hours on her own
ignore me
Cut and paste does not work with shortened links. You would think that would be obvious enough to stop me doin it
It's really sad, but it looks like practically every health and safety protocol was ignored, so it's not surprisin
things rotating really fast + loose clothing = NOT GOOD.
You can use it i any presentation to explain that safety has to be more than making sure the kart and track are certified and people are suited, booted and helmeted.
It's a bit of obserd that it happened really, but ta.
Spent today wording emails, trying to partner up with go motorsport
I can't remember who it was but there was an American actress killed that way. She was in an MG with wire wheels in Paris I think and the scarf caught in the rear wheel
That;s a good idea. I like that
and The British Schools KArting championship, F1 in Schools and Greenpower.
She was a dancer not an actress and it was a Bugatti not an MG. At least she had taste in cars.
http://www.isadoraduncan.org/about_isadora.html
It's good that all these schemes are around now
google replaced answers.com with their custom dictionary already?
Grrrr.... hate it when I get new server toys and they don't have all their memory or hard drives installed.
Hello :) commenting from London padd. Igot lou to meet giggl... I mean thereal michael mcintyre!! :)
London padd.?
nice to see the two of you had a great time! :D
Paddington?
yeah, that's the only one I could think of.
Sounds like it
yup sorry
Either that or he's on top of a giant bear which would explain the broken text ;)
:D
Sad news - Teletext is to close... tomorrow! [Jersey only.. possibly]
http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/jersey/hi/tv_and_radio/newsid_8366000/8366937.stm
Rumours of an inability to display diagonal lines being the cause, are greatly exagerated
Looks like Channel Islands only
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/guernsey/8366335.stm
How much can it possibly cost to run teletext? This is some management consultant trying to make a point
Maybe it's about not making a great deal of profit these days
From what I read, Channel Islands gets an extension to 31st December. The rest close on 15th December.
ex-Honda young driver
*waves from the daily*
Glad you waved. I was in danger of drifting off into irrelevance there
:P
helloo mr c. hows sidepodland today?
good. although i'm sick of all the updates keep putting out.
too.much.stuff.
Have a break over Xmas
google that is, google.
mmm. and beer.
Get Christine to tweak her NASA letter and send it to google
Honestly the cutest thing i've seen in ages
http://twitpic.com/tngf5
hahaha... that is cute.
Is that Ruben's son?
ooh! plan.
yeah :)
http://twitpic.com/tnimk
his other son
Hey everyone! :) how are you all?
Hey! How was London?
hellooo! i bet you has a biiig smile on ya face?
good ta :)
Hi Lou.
Did you have a fun day?
OK and wondering what Renault will announce tomorrow?
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2009/12/15/sports/sports-uk-motor-racing-renault.html
London was AMAZING! We met Michael McIntyre!! :D
For Lou
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00pgnsn/The_One_Show_14_12_2009/
definitely :D
was freezing, but also perfect :)
according to will:
Gravity / Renault to be announced tomorrow. Villeneuve return soon afterwards?
http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/6705421322
Awesome!
ace!
ooo yay!.. boo to him wearing that suit though..
but why/how?
Lukeh spoke to him.. i just smiled in disbelief.. :D
I wasn't there!
This os Goodood al over again! ;)
Are you sure it wasn't Alex?
*This is Goodwood all over again... (no idea what happened there...)
They said on the show that he was dresses like a playboy.
don't tell me another "has been" is going to get a drive! At least MS has driving talent!
or a mclaren driver.
we went to the christmas market at Hyde Park this evening and Em spotted him walk past the group of them. Luke and i looked at each other and just sprinted off to go shake his hand and say hi. I made Luke speak to him though because i didn't have much to say other than.. hi. He promoted his DVD which was funny, but he's such a nice guy, he didn't have to stop and talk to us on his family outing.
it actually was! cause later as we were leaving we saw him again! :)
:D
well when Em and the others first mentioned it we thought it could have been, so that was part of the reason we went running after him... just in case it was ;)
Now the Saudis are interested in space rocks. Wonder if there is oil up there?
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2009/dec/HQ_09-284_NASA-Saudi_statement.html
Just as I thought. :D
It was Alex. Look at the plug he did
Well, if Nick will hold out for Merc and Kamui is en route to Hinwil, who else is free? His only other option (USF1) is looking dimmer by the day.
woah, woah. When did this get rumoured?
If there's water out there... maybe oil too?
Today. At Joe's.
gonna be the best season ever!
Richard Branson challenged aviation rival Tony Fernandes to a Formula One duel on Tuesday with the loser having to dress up as an airline stewardess.
:)
http://in.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idINTRE5BE52P20091215
Better than killing himself, I suppose. ;)
There won't be oil on the moon or anything that comes whizzing round here. Further out it is a certainty that there is but probably not in the solar system
it was alex.
...ooh. Why outside the solar system but not within it?
as he left he spun round and said 'don't forget to buy my dvd' lol maybe it was... ;)
one of the best days ever! :)
Well, am going to guess the $10m will cover what he'll ruin on the car next season...
That would be awesome. Finally some personality!
To be fair, he hasn't crashed his F1 car... yet.
What do they mean bu "duel"?
Because it is very unlikely that there has been life on the scale necessary to produce oil. Outside the solar system it is an absolutely certainty that there is life all over the place.
Of course you'd say that. :P
Nick will hold out even at the cost of losing a Sauber driving. Sauber want a young and an experienced driver - so I am guessing it will be Fisi and Petrov who can bring $10-15 million backing.
I wouldn't trust my life with him. ie, Kaz in Brazil
Still banking on Klien and Petrov. Why does everyone forget Klien?
who?
Exactly. ;)
He was the one who cra...oooooh yeah.
Fisi and Petrov sounds ace
Christine hasn't forgotten him. Not after he cost Franck a Le Mans win last year
Ferrari want Fissi at Sauber and they are supplying the engines- I would go for Klien over Fissi any day!
it's true.. it's not every day you spot awesome comedians.. it's been a good year for me celebrity spotting wise ;)
oh and it was nice luke was there too ;)
Grrrrrr.
He is a better F1 than a Le Mans driver - it was sad that he was faster than either Fissi of Liuzzi when testing for Force India and still did not get a drive!
I suppose if he had an F1 drive he'd be about as far away from Franck as he could get, so that is sad.
Evening all.
If anyone is watching the Robson Green swimming programme, there is a bearded fellow called Simon on it who went to university with Mrs C.
Claims to fame, eh?
Depends on what team they are in!
Does anyone participate in YouTube's 'Revenue Sharing'?
hehe, love the title:
http://www.metrof1.com/blogs/metrof1/2009/12/virgin-vs-lotus-its-going-to-be-a-drag-race.html
Unfortunately, I have seen Beardy in drag one too many times
[It may only have been once or twice, but it was still too many]
"The drivers have already been taught the meaning of "fancy a brew", and that the correct response is "aye lad"."
:-D
:D
bah, beat me to it|!
No wonder he was game to do it - he's been there, done that.
He's an unashamed self-publicist. Even if he loses the bet, he gets acres of free publicity
Win - Win
Timo must clearly be trying to learn my language for a chat wi' me sometime, like man.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6AnFxBwctQ
Rubens in Williams colors!
i (heart) these new teams. they're rubbish, disorganised and will likely bring the sport into disrepute. but they are fun :)
And he looks AWESOME in Williams blue.
and tony gets to live.
nooooooo :( it looks wrong
:D
Have to agree with ya there.
awwww no :( it's actually real.. no honda or brawn.. it looks wrong!
ooh, good find... looks weird
2 things;
Hulkenberg is SO thin, clearly they didnt have thin enough overalls for him..
Secondly, thats one heck of a tash mansell has
thirdly....
Mr Williams cant say Barrichello
They are going to be so much fun to watch next year. In Bahrain they are going to be MILES behind... I do expect them to make a lot of progress - some more than others
I can't wait until USF1 fields their first car in 2011 and proves you all wrong!
odd that the car footage is nico/kaz.
and he said Rubens won thrice last year...
:D
Reminds me of something RG & Christine may find amusing, one sec...
I love that comment soo much.
hah :-)
only at the start. middle of the video has them in the cars
true.
I'm really sorry Jon and Lou (and Lukeh, even though he isn't here), but I think he looks more comfortable in Williams Blue than Brawn White. I just don;t know why...
That's 3 comments in a row I've made a mistake in. I think I'll get an early night...
what time?
'Cos he's the bossman now.
First time he'll be his team's lead driver in exactly a decade.
i seee it :D missed that hte first time
Oh, that's NOT right. first time in 11 years.
night
RG you're going to have to ahve a word with your lad..
"Top 3 race venues for 2010?
The first race of the season in Bahrain, my home race at Hockenheim and the night race in Singapore which is spectacular."
oh dear
aww... brawn gp will always be the most perfect team ever :)
As a venue, Bahrain is quite nice.
Speaking of him
http://onetimoglock.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/sneak-peek-at-timos-new-helmet/
no Monaco or Spa? :-/
Anyhoo, off to bed for me. Can't it be Friday already? Good night.
The video on the Virgin site had him wearing that helmet. I must say, It's very nice!
Night mate, and Chris
Night!
I think i'm growing to like with Di Grassi lad..
"It’s March 14 2010 and you’re about to line up on the grid for the start of your first ever Formula 1 race. What are you thinking?
1. Wow! 2. Need a good start and a good finish 3. Don’t stop for fuel!"
Ah, Americans and their incompatibility with Regional UK accents
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/tyne-and-wear-mac-os-ken-mp3
[apologies for the low volume]
I said early night, but not this early! ;) Maybe within the next hour or so
:D
I'd like to apologise to any Americans for Sidepodpanels 2 and 7. And any other appearances I have made...
night! :)
best.clip.ever
Ken Ray is quite an amusing chap
If his podcast wasn't purely Mac centric, I'd suggest all to listen
Evening all :)
Luuuuuuuuuukeh
howdy
Hello sir.
yay you got home safe and before 11! :)
Evening!
night
I'm really sorry lou but that is just,.. awesome. I miss the brawn overalls :( but that really suits him...
hey
Hey Lukeh
you're wrong.. ;)
I agree with Lou - it looks wrong!
Has the patch of snow gone to my head?
:P
yep :)
yes
YOU GOT SNOW!?!?
Just out of place. We'll be used to it by March.
Still, I'm not sure I can get my head around seeing drivers in new overalls before launch season.
loving f1-live's replacement:
Claire Furnell caught up with Tai at Virgin Racing's launch in London to find out what he thinks next year has in store.
real people. having conversations.
http://en.espnf1.com/virgin/motorsport/story/5128.html
no.. well... yes... but no.. there was a random patch of snow in hyde park today. look at lukeh's twitpic ;)
It's expected in the South by Thursday, isn't it?
it should wait until im home on friday and then it's allowed to bucket down
http://twitpic.com/tm6uv
For no apparent reason
yep
Its always the south.
ahh, will add to Google Reader then
"Well first and foremost Tai is a pilot, having trained with the RAF in the late 1980's he went on to have a career flying executive jets."
Tai Fighter?
Hyde Park is lovely isnt it? with the big german fairy thing.
:D :D
What is, Thursdays?
"Alex Tai's last job was heading Virgin's Galactic space tourism business now he takes the role as team principal of Virgin Racing as they prepare to join the grid for what promises to be the most competitive F1 season for years."
riiiight...
and the caption...
"Alex Tai isn't "into cross-dressing" so hopes his team beat Lotus in 2010"
ookkk
I can get my head around a Nick in Silver overalls and MS still in a little red-riding hood!
yes.. it's a bit odd... but Mr McIntyre seemed to like it so i suppose it must be good ;)
Virgin are ganna be a flying success
"You are from an aviation background not racing, what will you be bringing to the team as team principal?
What I do is bring the Virgin brand, which is required for us to finance the endeavours of Nick [Wirth] and John [Booth] and their teams. My job is to communicate what Virgin Racing stands for, what this collection of brilliant individuals stands for, to the public. There are a billion people that follow this sport and we need to be able to communicate better with them and show some of the passion in our team. We want to make this sport much more open and available to the public."
thats not what team principles do?
Much dancing occured.
hmmm....
:D
Que?
lots of beer, some fair ground rides. tis quite nice
Each team has a subsection with links to stories and profiles on that team.. much more elegant than Autosport's box thing
and a mr mcintyre... have i mentioned how awesome it was to meet one of my comedy heros randomly in london enough yet?
You went so shy :P
i didn't know what to say! at least i said something.. i'm getting better in these situations...kinda...
You're becoming quite the celeb hunter! ;)
That is a nice way of saying the usual word ;)
She'll have her own column in OK next
hehe this year has been very successful for that kinda thing. Have spoken to John Button, Jenson Button, Michael McIntyre.. have seen thousands of drivers and people at goodwood, and then some more at brooklands.. and not to mention the QI people... it's been an awesome year :D
naaahh... i'd rather take the photos rather than write the columns
Speaking of which, are there any pics from Saturday up yet from you or Mr C?
err... i don't really have any nice ones on my camera... Mr C has the ones i took on his camera.. so er.... bug him for them :D heheh
I'll take that as a 'not yet' then :)
yep :D hehe
tis on my list.
:D
No worries sir, if the press releases ever stop this week, you may get a chance to tie your shoe laces!
Turun Sanomat are reporting Kobayashi has signed for Sauber but won't be made official until the other driver is signed.
have never know anything like it.
its 39 degrees outside and im wearing 4 layers and im still freezing. Have i ever mentioned that I hate the aircon in this office?
Well, it has been a slow silly season
I think they are getting their 15 mins worth now due to the combined car launches
sunday's show is the chill-out, demob, party show.
and we have to discuss all this proper news
We may have to split it up into two!
terrible business.
So instead of doing a weekly show you are going to wait two weeks and then do two shows?
It was just a suggestion .
More details of the karting death
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20091215/tuk-teenage-girl-killed-in-go-kart-accid-45dbed5.html
It makes sense. A normal Debrief to cover the news followed by the year end party and awards?
Ooooht that sounds good :P
Thats what was done last year wasn't it? Or is there a gap inbetween of an hour or something?
It makes sense if he can bring $10 million in sponsorship. Then I will guess Petrov will go to Campos.
It was all in one last year, I believe. There's no way there was this much news in December 08.
Last year-end was a bit of a downer with all the Honda malarky
The other teams were quite stable
The only news at this time last year was Honda and there were no real developments in that after the initial pull out and trying to find a buyer
there's no way there's ever been this much news in december.
Or March! :D
I'm not sure I'm gonna make it to Christmas!!
They used to race on January 1st so there used to be real action in December. Of course the world was still in black and white then so no-one expected constant info
Did anyone else have a backlog of old sidepodcast episodes re-appear in itunes ?
ooh, was it about 10? apologies, i just changed something.
I had an F1 Minute appear in my Filmspotting list. That was weird!
I'll grab a screenshot
that wasn't me!
Random question but.... do trains have clutches?
:D :D :D :D :D
also... what about planes?....
#blameEmily
I would imagine so, why?
Hmmm, I think Mr Waldock has been playing with my Mac then ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/misplaced-f1-minute-jpg
Planes? You do know that the engines of planes are not connected to the wheels?
Has been a bit of a talking point today. Caused a bit of an uproarious discussion between lou's friends when asked and I just simply decided that I have no idea. I'm not sure why it even started? I think it was become it felt like one of the tube trains jumed when it got going like if you bring a car clutch up too quickly...
wow. really not me.
nope, but i do now :)
Planes have clutches
Loads of them
They need a clutch or they couldn't stop
But not the kind they are talking about that work with the left pedal
Em asked me on the train today because the district line trains were delayed, and every time we stopped unexpectedly it was like the train stalled.. and then i asked Lukeh and it was a bit of a talking point for most of the day :D
Modern, variable speed battery drills have clutches even
[Though sadly not Orange Drills™]
No, the left pedal is for the rudder
[Mostly]
There are 2 things that pilots have to remember when landing:
1. Make sure that handbrake is off.
2. Make sure that the front wheel is pointing straight forward.
I didn't know there was any other option for pedals on a plane
my favourite drill terminology is "keyless chuck"
The top of the pedals pushes the brakes
Tilt for brakes / in-out for rudder
Usually, it's just the answer to 3 Down
Heel and toe on an aeroplane?
Kinda, but not at the same time :)
It's fair to say our discussion wasn't as technical as this :P
:D
You have to know these things when you're a Certified Orange Dril™l Operator
We need to hear a bit of your conversation
Totally understandable.;)
i have never been on a plane so my knowledge was limited to, well, nothing.
are you suggesting we should have live streamed it?
i've been on a plane and didn't know any of this stuff, so don't worry ;)
Obviously. But you could just tell us now
It was along the lines of
"I've been on a ferry... to france. And a coach to spain. But not a plane.
Youve never been on a plane!"
As you can see the thought of a clutch in a train was of uttermost importance
They don't tell you this kind of thing. They only tell you how to get out if it crashes and where your life vest is. I think it should be re-branded as your airbag
i hadnt been on a plane until i was 21. People found this really weird. Glad i am not alone :D
the bit about the train and a clutch was more like...
'do train's have clutches? what happens is they stall?...'
'good question.. i have absolutely no idea... i wonder if they do have clutches...'
*turns to luke*
'do trains have clutches?'
'err.. no idea..'
'actually i wonder if planes have clutches?.... do planes have clutches?'
it was an odd conversation...
There are some who insist that life jackets are only intended to find and scoop the bodies out of the water with ease
yeah that sounds more right. I was too busy breaking my back.
I am sooooo gonna beat your record.
I love the idea that you get a whistle to attract attention. Who is going to hear a whistle when they didn't notice 100 tons of aeroplane hit the ground
i only learned this year why you shouldnt inflate it until you are out of the plane. I should have realised a lot earlier, it seems logical
Rescue sharks, obviously!
Haven't you seen Titanic? It works. ;)
That's because the band wouldn't shut up so the sound of the sinking ship was obscured! ;)
I haven't seen it but I am prepared to bet the Titanic did not come screaming down from 30,000 feet
I am so glad I don't have a flight tomorrow.
:)
I'm flying Thursday early morning. I'm more worried about freezing to death on the way to the airport though.
i have one in 8 days hooray! Having no fear of flying makes life so easy.
in Finland, I'd imagine the de-icing crews earn quite a bit of overtime this time of year
That's the problem with the life jackets as well. People jump into the water believing they are safe and die of hypothermia in minutes
oo.. some f1 related shots in today's big picture
Have you guys seen this?...
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/12/renault-to-announce-f1-plans-tomorrow/
I wonder if Kubes is part of the deal or if he is actually off to Mercedes and the Schuey thing is a big con....
Is the a limit for how cold it can be before a normal airplane can't fly anymore?
Wow, some really good photos there :) Gotta love the big picture.
Although todays didnt manage to grab me in the same way #39 from part one did. Looking at it again just really strikes me so much.
I do like #32
I think frost and ice is the factor. Once the air goes through the engine it gets pretty warm
Though severe cold at altitude can cause fuel freezing but that get's warmed up with heat exchangers
Right, I'm off to bed. Only two more days to go... lotsa love
G'night fella
night RG
Night mate.
They're also not much use on a flight from London to Glasgow.
I have never heard of one. They fly to Antarctica so I guess the minimum temp would be very low
Night RG
I flew from Paris to Moscow once and they gave us the life jacket speech.
ive seen plenty of aircrash investigation episodes where ice caused all kinds of problems. Silly ice.
You've not seen Airplane! then? Mind you that involved snow on the ground.
I think it's the law
Ice is such an attention seeking climate condition
Screws up the aerodynamics more then following a cr with a double diffuser
So no other news about the Renault press conference tomorrow then?.....
:D
:D
Nothing remotely definite. Just people guessing.
omg! why do i not think of these things?
It could get diverted to Amsterdam, that's probably closer
same. breakout thread prepped. will know when we know.
To be fair London to Glasgow flights do get over the sea a little bit and there is the lake district
I'm absolutely knackered so I'm heading off. Night all!! :)
G'night
Night Lukeh

Thanks guys...
Just wondered if I'd missed anything...
only thing james hadn't already covered was this:

night :)
Hey Bassano, what do you think of the 787? We think the wings look a bit flimsy and the engines too big.
Good night Lou
hmm?
I just saw you say night. Didn't notice it was a reply. Considered yourself unshooed
yay :) you can shoo me tomorrow though.. as i have looads of work to get done! :(
Boeing livery masks the shape a bit too much
All wings flex, if they didn't they'd snap on take off or landing
It's probably the curly winglets (on the wing tip) giving that effect
The engines look about the same as the 777 which are a huge by-pass design [large intake]
Overall, I think it'll do fantastically well and herald a lot of carbon fibre useage in the next decade
that'll push up the cost of f1.
It should make the raw materials cheaper and the expertise more commonplace, so, not neccessarily
i am really bored and the only video i have on my psp is the 2008 aus gp. I am so not ready to watch f1 again though which is not how i usually feel in the off season!
Yeah, I know they're designed that way, but on take-off it looked a bit too much like the Rutan Voyager round the world plane, plus the wings look a bit skinny.
Probably modern wing design allows for smaller wing/fuselage ratio, being more efficient, aerodynamically
Dunno really, just a guess
It's going to be a carbon thing. Because they can create shapes that you can't with metal they can make the wings such a sophisticated shape and get better lift:drag ratios. Just like F1. That's why I want carbon banned in F1.
bassano, click2flash is rather awesome.
(autosport pushed me into it)
tell me about it!
Surprised it took you this long
Totally agree
ideally, i don't want to block people's source of income.
But if you weren't going to click the advert, would they still get paid?
i should image autosport get paid for views, and the video autoplays.
Autoplay videos are 'the suck'
i agree, but atleast they keep the sound off.
doesn't help my bandwidth.
nor that fact i'm still looking at the same b-roll footage of kimi after a week.
Get an unlimited package?
true
also true
it's not running out?
i have stopped reading news on the website of the main melbourne paper because i used to open each story i wanted to read in a new tab then work through them. Now almost every story has an autoplay video of the news story to accompany the text and hearing them all play at once does my head in.
exactly the same with autosport (minus sound). you open six tabs and you get six videos, each slightly behind the last.
Safari + Click For Flash
I'm sure FF has a similar Flash blocker (AdBlock+ maybe)
it does, but click2flash is way more elegant.
True
Home sweet home :)
Really interesting Question Time in you're at all interested in Politics/Iraq/Afganistan
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00pcbpq/Question_Time_10_12_2009/
That's ridiculous. Have they got a mobile version? What is the URL of the site?
Hi Alison
doesn't appear to work on safari on the pc though :(
hey! :)
Is Flash worse on Macs than on PC's?
url is www.theage.com.au not sure if they have a mobile site i have never looked.
Helloooo all :D
I really should be heading to bed, I have an early start.
Hello
oooh yes. much slower and more flaky.
i'm so tired i'm off to sleep, it's been a looong day.
night all!
See ya Lou
This is not a ploy to make me say good night again is it?
hehe no i'm actually off to sleep ;)
*turns laptop off*
http://m.theage.com.au/
In that case good night.
Not what you'd expect from Adobe really, but it is true.
i dunno. cs4 operates like it's working underwater.
the age mobile site sucks. I clicked a link on a story and it took me straight to the story on the main website and attempted to load the flash player again
It's probably detecting the browser you're using.
Strange, didn't do that for me. I agree that the site "needs work".
Looks fine on iPhone though, mobile and classic view.
im on a mobile browser though! It was on a "read comments on this story" link
That would be normal behaviour, the Register does that - comments can only be seen on the full version of the site, not the mobile one.
What about using RSS? http://www.theage.com.au/rssheadlines/
normal for who?
thats stupid normal behaviour then. It shouldnt be hard to put comments in mobile version.
in our case, it's hard to put the content in the mobile version :)
OK, maybe I should have used "it's by design" then.
I now find myself reading The Age. The story about the driver who couldn't stop his car is pretty funny.
is he mental? he must've been having a laugh.
who puts a car into neutral and heads for oncoming traffic?
i heart mobile sidepodcast. Mr C > Ron Walker
i didnt realise people actually used cruise control.
hehe. it would be better if it refreshed, but it'll do for now.
Yeah I know. My mum uses it obsessively. I think it's really dangerous!
This guy it seems. I meant the last paragraph was funny:
"Ford Australia spokeswoman Sinead McAlary said the frozen cruise control was not an issue the company had encountered before. It was probably the same for Mr Weir [the driver]."
:)
they don't believe him either.
It's supposed to disable automagically when you press the throttle or brake pedal.
Yeah it's not that. It's that she uses it in 30 zones and stuff where you'd usually adjust your speed slightly to respond to hazards but she's always tempted to leave it on as much as possible rather than subtly responding to the road around you. It really annoys me.
That is silly. Cruise control is definitely not for urban driving.
Well exactly! I can see that you'd want to use it on the motorway but I'd be worried I'd doze off!
Cruise control is a very bad idea in any situation
ive never used it because i like feeling like i am in control of the car. Its why i dont like automatics either
Yeah, I've never used it. I can't see how you can get away with driving at a constant speed ever. You need to react to your surroundings.
I tried it a few times then one day I pulled out to overtake a car and half way past it I realised I wasn't accelerating. That was the last time I touched it.
ahh, we has some cross threading issues and a half here.
am going to bounce to the conversation back to yesterday and start afresh.
