We have arrived at Tuesday, and my first job is to remind you that the deadline for the season review submissions is up! Technically it was yesterday, but I forgot to remind you, so I've extended it by a day. If you haven't already, and want to call in your thoughts on the season just past, there are more details here. Now, let's get on with the good stuff:

  • Trulli and Kovalainen were confirmed at Lotus yesterday. It happened in the early hours UK time, and must be our earliest breakout thread ever. I find the driver selection odd, but still, it's good for familiar faces to retain seats.
  • Massa is going to get back behind the wheel of the F2007, with demo tyres on. Felipe said he wanted to get back behind the wheel of an F1 car before the end of the year, so he's grateful to Ferrari for giving him the opportunity.
  • The Schumacher rumours continue to be fuelled with Ferrari reported as saying they would not stand in the seven times world champ's way... at the moment. That doesn't mean it would be a straightforward switch to Mercedes of course, but I suppose it is one less barrier to entry for him.

That'll do it for now. Don't forget the Advent Calendar is still ongoing, and today, I know for a fact we are finally moving away from the Hungarian GP. Hoorah! I will see you in the comments.

    All hail the new Daily.

I have written short notes for the Review, but I know at this hour I'll struggle to form verbal sentences in the right order or at an audible volume, so will endeavour to phone something in tomorrow after work.

According to the www.feederseries.co.uk stats someone searched fortec motorsport and found my site and so i was trying to find out what page of google it was on if you search that.

    Oh, this is significant:

Should a driver use more than eight engines he will drop ten places on the starting grid at the first Event during which each additional engine is used. If two such additional engines are used during a single Event the driver concerned will drop ten places on the starting grid at that Event and at the following Event.

Without wanting to give creedence to the Schumacher to Mercedes rumours and despite the fact that I still think it makes no sense for Mercedes to hire him (if he does well - it's because he's Schumacher, if he does badly - it's because the car is bad). But putting all that to one side...

I was thinking about what it would mean for Rosberg. Is it good for him to have Schumacher as a team mate? He could learn a lot from him. Could he even go faster than him if Schumacher is injured? Would this be good or bad for his reputation?

Mr C asked the exact same thing yesterday. He thinks it's bad for Nico. If Schumi beats him, Germany laughs at him. If he beats Schumi, Germany will hate him. Although Kathi disagreed with the latter.

Mr C also reminded us of Keke and Nico's statements at Monaco 2006, which probably means they don't get on very well at all.

I might try to stream it

  • Amy15/12/2009 at 10:49

hoooraaaay my coming to the BSB show with me friend is confirmed. She was worried it was too much money but I convinced her by offering to pay for some of her ticket. Today at work I watched the Top 20 songs of 1997 and I took As Long As You Love Me as a sign that everything would be A-OK :D

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 10:57

Does someone have to fold it all back up again?

We roll it up, put it in a container and send it to the workshop. They inspect, test and fold it up nicely with a recharged pressure cylinder

Indeed. This is exactly the same trick he played last year with the awful cover of Hallelujah. Which Cowell owned the rights to as well as owning the rights to the original which got to number 2 in the charts.

I'm telling you SonyBMG have started this campagn. I'd put money on it. It drives up sales of both songs because it keeps it in the news. Also as one more point... The X-Factor single gives some money to charity whereas of course the Rage against the machine one doesn't. So if you do choose the other single... http://www.justgiving.com/ratm4xmas/

Ah so you did know. Interesting that Wirth should lead the way in a cost-effective method of designing an F1 car for a team that reports to be operating under Max's budget cap, isn't it?

I think more than a few mentioned that when they came out on the initial entry list at the height of the breakaway crisis.

Shall I not bother with the comments if I think someone has already said it then?

For those who like their facts...

2 years ago no rival bid for sales

Number 1 record Leon Jackson - When You Believe - 275,000

1 year ago rival bid with Cowell owned Hallelujah performed by Jeff Buckley

    Number 1 sold...

    576,000

The rivalry is pretty good for business.

  • Alianora La Canta15/12/2009 at 12:20

    Should a driver use more than eight engines he will drop ten places on the starting grid at the first Event during which each additional engine is used. If two such additional engines are used during a single Event the driver concerned will drop ten places on the starting grid at that Event and at the following Event. {Comment #61}

That's the clause introduced to stop people doing what Red bull considered (but didn't do) last year: using two extra engines in the same Saturday morning session to allow them to only take one penalty.

Band Aid - Your Mileage May Vary. I find it something of a curate's egg, almost by definition (there's invariably some artists who ruin it and other artists who do their lines excellently.

    I'm loving the suggestion that Schumacher is set to have a run out in a 2-year old Mercedes GP before deciding. Either way you look at it, the non-existence of a 2-year old Mercedes GP or the fact that it could actually be a Honda RA108, it's got to be the funniest rumour of the year. {Comment #293}

And I suppose Michael is supposed to drive this hunk of junk (assuming it is the RA108) and say "You can tell Ross didn't direct this design, can't you?"

    what will that tell schumi that the f2007 didn't? {Comment #297}

That he can still mildly subvert the regulations when he wants?

    /cynic

  • Maverick15/12/2009 at 14:08

That he can still mildly subvert the regulations when he wants?

This is a good point, Schumi could damage his reputation by coming back...

imagine if there was no cheating all season!

And I suppose Michael is supposed to drive this hunk of junk (assuming it is the RA108) and say "You can tell Ross didn't direct this design, can't you?"

Would be funny if he flung it around the track and made Button and Rubens look bad.

Let's say that somehow Michael wins the title in 2010.

Would it make the rest of the field look bad getting beaten by a (albeit legendary) 41-year old guy who hadn't raced competitively for 3 seasons?

  • me15/12/2009 at 14:35

I don't know, but it's bad for the sport if he has no clear successor...

  • Journeyer15/12/2009 at 14:37

it's a hypothetical question. and while i think it's a big mistake to come back, if steven roy believes he still has it, it's still a possibility. stranger things have happened...

  • Journeyer15/12/2009 at 14:38

I don't know, but it's bad for the sport if he has no clear successor...

he left in 06, and he didn't have a clear successor.

has it harmed the sport? in some ways, yes. in others, no. it depends how you see it.

Alonso beat him two years in a row. This was good, because it meant that somebody could beat him and therefore the calibre of the drivers was not lowered...

  • Journeyer15/12/2009 at 14:40

Alonso beat him two years in a row. This was good, because it meant that somebody could beat him and therefore the calibre of the drivers was not lowered...

Excellent point. But then Alonso got beaten by Lewis in 07, which kinda put the "clear successor" storyline in doubt.

  • me15/12/2009 at 14:40

allegedly he was forced of his own team.

  • Journeyer15/12/2009 at 14:40

i wasn't referring to Ferrari per se, but the grid as a whole (i.e. who succeeded Michael as the sport's leading figure).

Not really, because Alonso was the marker - so it validated Lewis's talent.

It definitely did. But then, you don't have a clear number one.

Again, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It just depends on what you're looking for - either compelling rivalries, or a Tiger-like dominance.

  • Maverick15/12/2009 at 14:45

I don't mean a dominator - I mean the fact that someone beat him meant that the talent pool in F1 was still high - and the fact that Lewis beat him meant that there was another really talented driver in F1. It's an ice racing series, usually full of cars like little Renaults, Peugeots, Kia's, Toyota's, BMWs, etc. which have been modified with 4WD, high revving engines, snow tyres and 4 wheel steering. Small, but mental :P

Not just any people - serious racers. I think Alain Prost won the Andros Trophy once or twice. Olivier Panis has raced there too (if you remember the Top Gear feature on it last series).

ice is only an issue on the roads because you go from lots of grip to none.

If you race on ice then you have none all the time

You can use it i any presentation to explain that safety has to be more than making sure the kart and track are certified and people are suited, booted and helmeted.

I made Luke speak to him though because i didn't have much to say other than.. hi. Today. At Joe's.

The favourite for one of the seats is Japan’s Kamui Kobayashi, who made a decent impression at the end of this year with Toyota. He is believed to have sponsorship in the region of $10m for a drive, which would make him a very attractive proposition for the team.

Nick will hold out even at the cost of losing a Sauber driving. Sauber want a young and an experienced driver - so I am guessing it will be Fisi and Petrov who can bring $10-15 million backing.

Nick will hold out even at the cost of losing a Sauber driving. Sauber want a young and an experienced driver - so I am guessing it will be Fisi and Petrov who can bring $10-15 million backing.

Turun Sanomat are reporting Kobayashi has signed for Sauber but won't be made official until the other driver is signed.

Em asked me on the train today because the district line trains were delayed, and every time we stopped unexpectedly it was like the train stalled.. and then i asked Lukeh and it was a bit of a talking point for most of the day :D

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 22:34

They need a clutch or they couldn't stop

Modern, variable speed battery drills have clutches even

    [Though sadly not Orange Drills™]

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 22:35

But not the kind they are talking about that work with the left pedal

No, the left pedal is for the rudder

    [Mostly]

  • Andy Taylor15/12/2009 at 22:37

Planes? You do know that the engines of planes are not connected to the wheels?

There are 2 things that pilots have to remember when landing:

    1. Make sure that handbrake is off.

    2. Make sure that the front wheel is pointing straight forward.

  • Steven Roy15/12/2009 at 22:38

No, the left pedal is for the rudder

    [Mostly]

I didn't know there was any other option for pedals on a plane

  • Amy15/12/2009 at 22:39

my favourite drill terminology is "keyless chuck"

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 22:39

I didn't know there was any other option for pedals on a plane

The top of the pedals pushes the brakes

Tilt for brakes / in-out for rudder

Kinda, but not at the same time :)

    Totally understandable.;)

i have never been on a plane so my knowledge was limited to, well, nothing.

i've been on a plane and didn't know any of this stuff, so don't worry ;)

  • Steven Roy15/12/2009 at 22:43

are you suggesting we should have live streamed it?

Obviously. But you could just tell us now

  • Lukeh15/12/2009 at 22:44

We need to hear a bit of your conversation

It was along the lines of

"I've been on a ferry... to france. And a coach to spain. But not a plane.

Youve never been on a plane!"

As you can see the thought of a clutch in a train was of uttermost importance

  • Steven Roy15/12/2009 at 22:45

i have never been on a plane so my knowledge was limited to, well, nothing.

i've been on a plane and didn't know any of this stuff, so don't worry ;)

They don't tell you this kind of thing. They only tell you how to get out if it crashes and where your life vest is. I think it should be re-branded as your airbag

  • Amy15/12/2009 at 22:45

i hadnt been on a plane until i was 21. People found this really weird. Glad i am not alone :D

  • lou15/12/2009 at 22:46

As you can see the thought of a clutch in a train was of uttermost importance

the bit about the train and a clutch was more like...

'do train's have clutches? what happens is they stall?...'

'good question.. i have absolutely no idea... i wonder if they do have clutches...'

    *turns to luke*

    'do trains have clutches?'

    'err.. no idea..'

'actually i wonder if planes have clutches?.... do planes have clutches?'

    it was an odd conversation...

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 22:46

They don't tell you this kind of thing. They only tell you how to get out if it crashes and where your life vest is. I think it should be re-branded as your airbag

There are some who insist that life jackets are only intended to find and scoop the bodies out of the water with ease

  • Lukeh15/12/2009 at 22:47

yeah that sounds more right. I was too busy breaking my back.

I love the idea that you get a whistle to attract attention. Who is going to hear a whistle when they didn't notice 100 tons of aeroplane hit the ground

  • Amy15/12/2009 at 22:49

i only learned this year why you shouldnt inflate it until you are out of the plane. I should have realised a lot earlier, it seems logical

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 22:49

I haven't seen it but I am prepared to bet the Titanic did not come screaming down from 30,000 feet

I'm flying Thursday early morning. I'm more worried about freezing to death on the way to the airport though.

  • Amy15/12/2009 at 22:55

in Finland, I'd imagine the de-icing crews earn quite a bit of overtime this time of year

  • Steven Roy15/12/2009 at 22:55

I'm flying Thursday early morning. I'm more worried about freezing to death on the way to the airport though.

That's the problem with the life jackets as well. People jump into the water believing they are safe and die of hypothermia in minutes

Wow, some really good photos there :) Gotta love the big picture.

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 22:59

Is the a limit for how cold it can be before a normal airplane can't fly anymore?

I think frost and ice is the factor. Once the air goes through the engine it gets pretty warm

Though severe cold at altitude can cause fuel freezing but that get's warmed up with heat exchangers

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 23:23

Hey Bassano, what do you think of the 787? We think the wings look a bit flimsy and the engines too big.

Boeing livery masks the shape a bit too much

All wings flex, if they didn't they'd snap on take off or landing

It's probably the curly winglets (on the wing tip) giving that effect

The engines look about the same as the 777 which are a huge by-pass design [large intake]

Overall, I think it'll do fantastically well and herald a lot of carbon fibre useage in the next decade

  • me15/12/2009 at 23:24

Overall, I think it'll do fantastically well and herald a lot of carbon fibre useage in the next decade

that'll push up the cost of f1.

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 23:25

that'll push up the cost of f1.

It should make the raw materials cheaper and the expertise more commonplace, so, not neccessarily

  • Amy15/12/2009 at 23:28

i am really bored and the only video i have on my psp is the 2008 aus gp. I am so not ready to watch f1 again though which is not how i usually feel in the off season!

It's probably the curly winglets (on the wing tip) giving that effect

Yeah, I know they're designed that way, but on take-off it looked a bit too much like the Rutan Voyager round the world plane, plus the wings look a bit skinny.

  • Bassano15/12/2009 at 23:30

plus the wings look a bit skinny.

Probably modern wing design allows for smaller wing/fuselage ratio, being more efficient, aerodynamically

    Dunno really, just a guess

  • Steven Roy15/12/2009 at 23:33

Probably modern wing design allows for smaller wing/fuselage ratio, being more efficient, aerodynamically

It's going to be a carbon thing. Because they can create shapes that you can't with metal they can make the wings such a sophisticated shape and get better lift:drag ratios. Just like F1. That's why I want carbon banned in F1.

the age mobile site sucks. I clicked a link on a story and it took me straight to the story on the main website and attempted to load the flash player again

Strange, didn't do that for me. I agree that the site "needs work".

Looks fine on iPhone though, mobile and classic view.

im on a mobile browser though! It was on a "read comments on this story" link

That would be normal behaviour, the Register does that - comments can only be seen on the full version of the site, not the mobile one.

    What about using RSS? http://www.theage.com.au/rssheadlines/

    normal for who?

  • Amy16/12/2009 at 00:14

thats stupid normal behaviour then. It shouldnt be hard to put comments in mobile version.

in our case, it's hard to put the content in the mobile version :)

OK, maybe I should have used "it's by design" then.

I now find myself reading The Age. The story about the driver who couldn't stop his car is pretty funny.

is he mental? he must've been having a laugh.

who puts a car into neutral and heads for oncoming traffic?

  • Amy16/12/2009 at 00:23

i heart mobile sidepodcast. Mr C > Ron Walker

  • Amy16/12/2009 at 00:25

i didnt realise people actually used cruise control.

hehe. it would be better if it refreshed, but it'll do for now.

Yeah I know. My mum uses it obsessively. I think it's really dangerous!

  • Andy Taylor16/12/2009 at 00:27

This guy it seems. I meant the last paragraph was funny:

"Ford Australia spokeswoman Sinead McAlary said the frozen cruise control was not an issue the company had encountered before. It was probably the same for Mr Weir [the driver]."

  • me16/12/2009 at 00:28

    they don't believe him either.

It's supposed to disable automagically when you press the throttle or brake pedal.

  • Alison16/12/2009 at 00:29

Yeah it's not that. It's that she uses it in 30 zones and stuff where you'd usually adjust your speed slightly to respond to hazards but she's always tempted to leave it on as much as possible rather than subtly responding to the road around you. It really annoys me.

That is silly. Cruise control is definitely not for urban driving.

Well exactly! I can see that you'd want to use it on the motorway but I'd be worried I'd doze off!

Cruise control is a very bad idea in any situation

  • Amy16/12/2009 at 00:39

ive never used it because i like feeling like i am in control of the car. Its why i dont like automatics either

  • Alison16/12/2009 at 00:40

Yeah, I've never used it. I can't see how you can get away with driving at a constant speed ever. You need to react to your surroundings.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2009 at 00:42

I tried it a few times then one day I pulled out to overtake a car and half way past it I realised I wasn't accelerating. That was the last time I touched it.

  • me16/12/2009 at 00:43

ahh, we has some cross threading issues and a half here.

am going to bounce to the conversation back to yesterday and start afresh.
