Another week is beginning, then, and we are here at Monday. As I have been paying very little attention to Formula 1 over the weekend, I think it's time to take a glance around the blog world and see what everyone has been writing about. Let's take a look:

  • Firstly, it's over to Pitlane Fanatic, where they already do a regular weekend run through blogs you need to be keeping an eye on. The talk of Schumacher's return is a popular one, with Journeyer writing up a guest post here on Sidepodcast, and also some thoughts from Adie over at F1 Tailpipe.
  • Much to my despair, F1 Wolf has begun his countdown to the season, posting a news round up every ten days. We are onto 90 days now, and I can't believe the off-season is going so quickly. Another popular topic of the week was the points scoring system change, and Lukeh also had some interesting thoughts about that over on Gridwalk Talk.
  • Dank has written up the first part of a countdown - his top 20 drivers for 2009, from all walks of motorsport life. There are a few F1 names on there, and equally plenty of names I haven't heard of, so a good opportunity to learn a thing or two. Will be interesting to see who is his number one driver when it is posted.

That'll do it for now, I hope you all had a good weekend, and are prepared for the week ahead. Let us know what you've got planned, and don't forget Must Comment Monday. I'll see you in the comments.

For Journeyer and Steven I have a business opportunity for you: F1 Historical Consultants plc. Here's the blurb:

Are you a new formula 1 team that's borrowing the heritage of another? Or are you a team that's been going so long that your history seems a bit too historic? Do you find creating press releases a daunting task? Would you like to include facts in them rather than idle speculation? Do you find yourself thinking, 'he must be the first British driver to have won a race, right?' then we have the answer for you!

F1 Historical Consultants will ensure your press releases have the historical accuracy they deserve. And in our extended Giant Memory Module package we can provide you with 20 extensively researched and historically accurate F1 facts a day.

You should say that it happened because you are having to tailor your writing to an international audience in order to get more readers now that somebody has caused your press pass to go walkies... Or... wait maybe that wouldn't work.

I think it is a bad idea. It is unnecessarily complicated. There are enough broken traffic lights without making them more complicated.

i despise the idea of waiting for an unknown amount of time.

although with this system, the yellow is clearly pointless.

    Hello :)

    afternoon.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 13:44

Why so? I hate getting surprised when there is no amber - especially on a bike...

    Because people go early.

Just listening to December's Motorsport Magazine Podcast (which is excellent BTW), who reckon that Anthony Davidson is in line for the Merc drive...

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 13:45

    same!!!

You haven't even passed a test yet. You don't know the misery of sitting at a red light at 2am when there is no-one else on he road in the same post code

Hmm. Do people in the UK, when they get held up by a guy reacting too slow to a green light make their move after it has turned red? They do it here and it's like they deserved to make the turn or something?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 13:47

How can anyone think that they have signed a deal worth $130 million without a single board member even speaking to them? Henkel used to sponsor McLaren so it should not be too hard to find someone in F1 who knows the company.

This sounds like an increibly incompetent fraud. Even the Tyco fraudsters did not advertise their fraud on the side of an F1 car and they were pretty blatant.

Henkel used to sponsor McLaren so it should not be too hard to find someone in F1 who knows the company.

F1 sponsorships can be odd beasts, especially when it comes to the people with smaller logos. Often it's a quid pro quo technology partnership where little cash actually changes hands.

I interviewed a chap in Monaco for a blog entry on this subject in the new year...

F1 sponsorships can be odd beasts, especially when it comes to the people with smaller logos. Often it's a quid pro quo technology partnership where little cash actually changes hands.

I know a lot of that goes on. If I had been talking to someone about $130 million I would have been inviting members of the board to tour the factory or visit a test. If I was getting blocked from meeting them I would then have been looking for someone who knew the company and there must be someone at Brawn who knows someone at McLaren they can speak to without kyboshing the deal.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 15:03

  • Stuart C14/12/2009 at 15:09

there must be someone at Brawn who knows someone at McLaren they can speak to without kyboshing the deal.

It is such an incestuous sport. Everyone seems to know everybody else's business. It beggars belief that this went on as long as it did without anyone finding out.

Makes me think that this has been known for a while, but one party or another is trying to break the deadlock by making it public.

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 15:59

I love it. When do we start? :)

yes but it's a while away was trying to bring it forward to next week, but there is still one less examiner at the test centre which means 35 less driving tests a week. It's so frustrating, because i can drive... and my occasional driving lesson is now just practising manoeuvres which i'm able to do.. and driving places i can drive to fine..

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 16:09

You have to have that attitude for the test. Try to forget about nerves and just get through it. I know the test seems like a big deal but the hard part is really the first time you head off yourself to somewhere you have never been before. That is a lot harder than the test.

  • Alex Andronov14/12/2009 at 16:58

    Must be McLaren right?

Do you think Jenson has demanded a seperate database as part of his contract?

  • Lukeh14/12/2009 at 16:58

awesome! does this mean Lukeh can move to London?

    On the other hand....

  • Alex Andronov14/12/2009 at 16:59

    City Of London?

That's very strange. Established in 1960...

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 16:59

    Oi! I drive a fiat!!

But you didn't become accustomed to open wheel racing, pulling several G's

  • Alison14/12/2009 at 17:00

If you had the choice of a free FIAT forlife or free Mercs and you were worth more millions than you could ever count which would you choose?

I wouldn't swap Alphonso for millions of anything!!

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:00

That's very strange. Established in 1960...

    Lotus?

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 17:01

Who said your course was annoying :)

Multiple FI drivers, is his for Vijay? ;)

  • Alison14/12/2009 at 17:01

    Nigerian conman?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:01

I wouldn't swap Alphonso for millions of anything!!

He is worth around $800 million. If he offered to give you all of that for your car you would not swap?

  • Jon Waldock14/12/2009 at 17:01

I'm in a baaaaaaaaaaad mood. Cheer me up?

    Did it go well?

  • Alex Andronov14/12/2009 at 17:02

virgin are the only team with offices in london, aren't they?

And they aren't in the city I don't think?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:02

I think it is probably just the recruitment agency

  • me14/12/2009 at 17:02

And they aren't in the city I don't think?

    true.

  • Alex Andronov14/12/2009 at 17:02

virgin are the only team with offices in london, aren't they?

Virgin certainly don't have "To date they have notched up multiple FI drivers' world championship titles and constructor's world championships."

  • lou14/12/2009 at 17:02

    Evening :P

    hello

    Heya Jon. ;)

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:04

Virgin certainly don't have "To date they have notched up multiple FI drivers' world championship titles and constructor's world championships."

Which means McLaren, Williams, Renault, Ferrari or Lotus

I'm in a baaaaaaaaaaad mood. Cheer me up?

Hello Jon, is this sheep related?

Only a 'yes' deserves an explanation ;)

  • Alex Andronov14/12/2009 at 17:04

I think it is probably just the recruitment agency

The recruitment company is on fleet street. That might be close enough for jazz to make sense.

  • RG14/12/2009 at 17:04

    how is everyone?

I can't be bothered with this week.

  • Alex Andronov14/12/2009 at 17:04

    Founded in the 60s?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:04

    I'm not selling my baby!!!

For $800 million? Are you insane?

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 17:04

If you read my Schumi guest post, I said Ferrari may have no choice but to let him go. But his Ferrari-related sponsors (Shell, Philip Morris) - that is a VERY different story.

  • Jon Waldock14/12/2009 at 17:05

Hello Jon, is this sheep related?

Only a 'yes' deserves an explanation ;)

    umm.....

    no

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 17:05

    Different Lotus, isn't it?

  • Jon Waldock14/12/2009 at 17:05

I can't be bothered with this week.

me either. i wanna go home

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:05

  • Alison14/12/2009 at 17:06

Is that an offer? I (heart) Alphonso. He's my favourite thing in the whole world!!

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:06

Yes. The other version could spell Clark

  • lou14/12/2009 at 17:06

I've just seen one line that makes whatever the job is amazing

'Our client offers extensive benefits including VIP trips to F1 races such as Monaco and Shanghai!'

VIP trips to monaco! awesome :P

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:06

Is that an offer? I (heart) Alphonso. He's my favourite thing in the whole world!!

I don't have that kind of money but Schumacher does so you need to ask him

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 17:07

I can hear my neighbour practising jingle bells on her flute, downstairs

    SPC commenter?

  • Alison14/12/2009 at 17:07

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 17:08

    Sorry Nick?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:08

It's not Lotus. They started in 1958. So it can only be McLaren

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:09

I can hear my neighbour practising jingle bells on her flute, downstairs

    SPC commenter?

Is she available for the sidepodparty? We need a flute player. Go ask her now.

I really don't want to buy a FIAT ever again

  • Alison14/12/2009 at 17:09

Now where would I start that conversation?

  • Lukeh14/12/2009 at 17:11

In their launch Notus spelled Clark with an e

    They are serious though

  • The Boston Red Scott14/12/2009 at 17:11

from BBCnews: The pair have signed three-year deals, with Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy named as the third driver.

"[The team] shows our seriousness to be a world championship contender," said Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes.

The first two names do, not sure if that third driver speaks seriousness though. i guess if I scroll back 10 hours, I'll find your comments :)

  • Jon Waldock14/12/2009 at 17:11

In their launch Notus spelled Clark with an e

Yeah, but what has that got to do with me wanting to go home?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:13

Now where would I start that conversation?

You tell her that you can't believe it is a co-incidence that she is playing the same tune you are writing a verse for and take it from there

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:13

Yeah, but what has that got to do with me wanting to go home?

    OOPS

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 17:14

Is she available for the sidepodparty? We need a flute player. Go ask her now.

Besides, she sounds like she needs a lot more practice. Even for us! :)

  • lou14/12/2009 at 17:15

Now where would I start that conversation?

Ask Alex to help? he seems good at having conversations where he has an odd request... like asking to borrow a bin to use as a catapult for hummus.. :D

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:15

Besides, she sounds like she needs a lot more practice. Even for us! :)

What better time for her to practise? If you can recognise the tune she is plenty good enough for us

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 17:15

Ask Alex to help? he seems good at having conversations where he has an odd request... like asking to borrow a bin to use as a catapult for hummus.. :D

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 17:53

Also found out that Jacques Villeneuve had popped down a week or so ago to see the place, as did Jake Humphreys.

I did also see the Lotus 49 and 79 up close for the first time, they had them in the workshop. I have quite a few pictures and I will pop them onto my Flickr page in a moment.

Folks, stuntfenix1 on YouTube has all the FIA Gala goodies - highlight reels not only from F1 2009, but from WRC and WTCC 2009 as well. The WRC clip was well-thought of and out of the box for a highlight reel. :)

something like that. generally it's "ok" but there's just certain things it dosent like. It's never had an issue with Mr Summerton before though.

And btw LDM: If he's such a dear friend, how can you blatantly say you haven't discussed this issue with MS?

Because Alonso will throw a wobbly because he will think they have been talking about him.

You have to ask why he has not signed a contract that was agreed in September

More news on Schumi from JA's blog: JA is starting to think it's going to happen. Schumi didn't attend the yearly Ferrari Christmas Lunch, while LDM spoke of Kimi, Felipe, and Fernando, but not Schumi.

So what is your job there Scott?

At the moment I'm helping out on the merchandise side of things, so it's just helping with online orders, getting them bagged up and payments put through. I'm on a two month trial working 3 days a week, and then we'll have a meeting to see where we go from there, if at all.

It's not the most glamourous job in the world, but if it means I get to be around some truly great Lotus F1 cars whilst I do it, then I'm happy :)

You get in on the ground floor and see what you can make of it. It sounds like a lot of people with good contacts are visiting regularly so you just need to impress and who knows where you can go. Classic racing is a huge business now.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 18:52

Oh I do work, but I asked if I could first when there was some free time. They said that was perfectly fine, but I wasn't allowed to take any pics of Clark's Indy Lotus. Realising that one of my pics had it in the background by mistake, I've cropped it so that it is no longer visible.

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 18:53

And that he didn't mention there was a 72 there earlier.

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 18:54

And that he didn't mention there was a 72 there earlier.

The 49 and 79 weren't there when I first visited. I think they were away at the Essen Motor Show at the time. It was great to see both of them up close.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 18:54

Like I said, I don't know the exact reason why, and I didn't question it and just got on with taking pics of the other cars.

Plus, they let the people on the tour see it and they were told what their plans with it were, so it wasn't exactly off limits. But I hear what you're saying.

It might just about edge having Lewis as a teammate. He should have at least half a chance of beating Schumi. But if Schumi beats him... I think he can kiss his F1 title dreams goodbye.

Germany might hate him, but that's just about the biggest scalp anyone can ever claim. Yeah, Michael's 41, but can anyone else claim that he beat Michael Schumacher when they were teammates?

That's assuming Michael lets it happen, of course. I suspect that if he can't beat Nico, he'll quit midseason.

  • RG14/12/2009 at 19:28

    brawn knows no other way.

  • Kathi14/12/2009 at 19:33

I can see myself supporting Williams next season. Rosberg, for me, is just a generic driver who needs an exceptional year to prove that he actually is worth the time and if they get Schumacher too then there's no way I can support him. I feel bad turning my back onthe team in Brackley though if that were the case :(

    Nope, that was Chris Dyer.

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 19:40

it's getting a bit late for that isn't it? how much gardening leave will those people need. 6 months? 9 months?

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:41

If his neck is 100% he will be just like he was before he quit

Despite three years out and only driving karts and motorbikes?

Why not? Lauda did it and Schumacher is fitter than Lauda ever was and he doesn't have serious money worries

  • me14/12/2009 at 19:41

Hmmm... Perhaps. But if I were Schumi, I just wouldn't rush into this. Merc needs him way more than he needs them.

the man clearly isn't thinking straight.

this is the craziest gamble. for no good reason.

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:41

You are turning to the dark side?

i love my team i really do.. they are incredible.. but with a team of Schumi and Rosberg... there isn't much to love is there... but Felipe, Rob, Alonso and Stefanano ;) i mean they are all awesome...

I'll always love the brackley lot.. will see what happens.. looks like i may just be supporting Team Button though :(

*prays Ant gets the Brawn seat and all is well with the world*

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:42

If Jenson has any intelligence he will have insisted on it. Don't be surprised if Schumacher parachutes his guys in

Jenson spent years building up his awesome team, and he;s great friends with them all, i just hope Brawn lets them go with him..

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:42

    Nope, that was Chris Dyer.

    ah okay :)

  • me14/12/2009 at 19:42

*prays Ant gets the Brawn seat and all is well with the world*

    nooo, commentary box for him.

schumi for brawn. i'm warming to this idea.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:42

it's getting a bit late for that isn't it? how much gardening leave will those people need. 6 months? 9 months?

If he didn't do it up front it won't happen now

  • RG14/12/2009 at 19:42

    nooo, commentary box for him.

Agreed, only for the sanity of me.

    Get di Resta in there.

  • Lukeh14/12/2009 at 19:42

schumi for brawn. i'm warming to this idea.

    Have you been doing c++?

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:42

    nooo, commentary box for him.

oh no! that would be awesome....

schumi for brawn. i'm warming to this idea.

not sure i like you anymore mr c.... you've changed....

    ;)

Didn't you see my comment earlier? He's off to Mercedes apparently!

  • jpancoast14/12/2009 at 19:43

schumi for brawn. i'm warming to this idea.

So, if Schumi gets/takes the drive, you guys will still do podcasts, right?

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 19:43

Why not? Lauda did it and Schumacher is fitter than Lauda ever was and he doesn't have serious money worries

  • me14/12/2009 at 19:43

    :)

there's a chance he can fail on a massive scale. a good chance. i'll take that gamble.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:43

*prays Ant gets the Brawn seat and all is well with the world*

Motor Sport in their December podcast said Ant was a certainty

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:44

Didn't you see my comment earlier? He's off to Mercedes apparently!

then there is noo need to have this convo Ant is going to save me from insanity and save my team too :D

    Get di Resta in there.

At last someone is talking sense

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 19:44

Motor Sport in their December podcast said Ant was a certainty

Do we know who or what their source is?

    oh yes!

Lukeh's got a serious hate on going!

  • RG14/12/2009 at 19:44

then there is noo need to have this convo Ant is going to save me from insanity and save my team too :D

Schumi to fail in a Merc or Ant to fail in the Merc.

Mr C, I see some sense.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/12/2009 at 19:44

Motor Sport in their December podcast said Ant was a certainty

Do we know who or what their source is?

He 'had it on good authority'.

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 19:45

    oh yes!

I like the prospect of Mr C laughing at Schumi every show if he fails. :D

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:45

So, if Schumi gets/takes the drive, you guys will still do podcasts, right?

Mr C has committed to the next 20 years

  • jpancoast14/12/2009 at 19:45

So, if Schumi gets/takes the drive, you guys will still do podcasts, right?

    oh yes!

cool. that is all I care about!

  • me14/12/2009 at 19:45

I like the prospect of Mr C laughing at Schumi every show if he fails. :D

    party poppers.

    and a big horn.

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 19:45

He 'had it on good authority'.

So someone on that show has good links with Mercedes?

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:45

Schumi to fail in a Merc or Ant to fail in the Merc.

i'll compromise... Schumi to do a piquet in Merc and fail miserably and get fired... Ant to save the day mid season?

  • Lukeh14/12/2009 at 19:45

    and a big horn.

    Bring on 2011!!

  • Lukeh14/12/2009 at 19:46

    urm, 2010. I am a year ahead.

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:46

    Bring on 2011!!

exactly, the year when Jenson goes back to Mercedes.. and all is well with the world ;)

  • RG14/12/2009 at 19:46

i'll compromise... Schumi to do a piquet in Merc and fail miserably and get fired... Ant to save the day mid season?

    Still don't want Ant.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:46

Schumi is also older now than when Lauda made his comeback.

He has not had a near death experience. He does not have serious money worries and he may be older in terms of age but in terms of attitude, fitness etc he is a lot younger

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/12/2009 at 19:46

He 'had it on good authority'.

So someone on that show has good links with Mercedes?

I have no idea. Listen to the podcast!

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:47

They are jourrnalists so they have their own sources who they are not going to name

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:47

    Still don't want Ant.

only Ant for 1/2 a season.. then he can go back to commenting duties when Jenson comes back in 2011 after a swift exit from Mclaren.. i've got it all worked out :P

  • Scott Woodwiss14/12/2009 at 19:47

much younger that lauda had to face.

you have permission to phone in and do so.

    :o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll take that as a yes.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:50

much younger that lauda had to face.

Lauda ended up with a very hungry Alain Prost as his team mate not Nico Rosberg

  • lou14/12/2009 at 19:50

I'll take that as a yes.

take it as a NO! :)

  • Lukeh14/12/2009 at 19:50

I'll take that as a yes.

    Oh RG.

  • me14/12/2009 at 19:50

Lauda ended up with a very hungry Alain Prost as his team mate not Nico Rosberg

i'm really not bothered about teammates though. nico is irrelevant.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:50

take it as a NO! :)

    A big loud no

  • Christine14/12/2009 at 19:50

Evening all. Don't forget today is the deadline for season review submissions. If you haven't done yours already, get reviewing! 0121 28 87225.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/12/2009 at 19:51

Just watching the bit I missed last night from SPOTY - how did they nominate some of these people?

    A big loud no

    exactly.

  • RG14/12/2009 at 19:51

Oh okay, a few LMS races as well...

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 19:51

Lauda ended up with a very hungry Alain Prost as his team mate not Nico Rosberg

Good point. But Niki needed three seasons to win that title. Michael will probably only have one. Two at most if they can't pull out Seb from his RBR contract.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:52

i'm really not bothered about teammates though. nico is irrelevant.

The point is that Lauda had to cope with Prost and succeed because that was the only wayhe could get the money to sort his airline out and not end up broke. He had a far harder job than Schumacher would if he comes back and he won a championship.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:53

Evening all. Don't forget today is the deadline for season review submissions. If you haven't done yours already, get reviewing! 0121 28 87225.

Deadline. I remembered there was a deadline. I just sort of forgot it was now

  • Jon Waldock14/12/2009 at 19:53

I asked my friend his F1 driver of the year and he said Nico

I havent laughed like that in a while

    ahhh, ok, with ya.

  • Christine14/12/2009 at 19:54

Deadline. I remembered there was a deadline. I just sort of forgot it was now

I will probably extend it to tomorrow, so I can give it a mention in the daily. I also forgot for today.

  • RG14/12/2009 at 19:55

I will probably extend it to tomorrow

Its like having Bernie Ecclestone here.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:55

Good point. But Niki needed three seasons to win that title. Michael will probably only have one. Two at most if they can't pull out Seb from his RBR contract.

Part of that was car related. McLaren had just started with carbon chassis so it was only in 1984 that they had a car to properly challenge with.

If Schumacher is only coming back for one season he is insane. He needs to sign a two or three year contract or I really don't understand what he is thinking

  • Christine14/12/2009 at 19:55

Its like having Bernie Ecclestone here.

Hehehe. I don't think Bernie extends things cos he forgets.

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 19:56

I will probably extend it to tomorrow, so I can give it a mention in the daily. I also forgot for today.

Your opinion is valid even if it is the same as someone else's. Just say who the best driver of the year was and why.

  • Alianora La Canta14/12/2009 at 20:52

I've had a good day outside - it's not as scary as it looks - and I've sorted out several Christmas presents, my headphones for next term's classes and got out of class 35 minutes early!

Well, everything has its exceptions - Mercedes among manufacturers, Piquet Jr among (ex-)F1 drivers, green circles among ideas to make tyres more interesting...

Hello. Just lurking as I'm still completing the 2009 Gala playlist. In the meantime, something to chew on:

From JA himself. Basically, the intent is there, but the diligence has yet to be completed. If you were to ask me... it still won't happen.

Does anyone else have the ustream viewer app for iPhone and iPod Touch? I had a quick look yesterday, and it looks like broadcasters need to email ustream to be listed as available for viewing.

Does anyone have time to investigate this?

Good spot. I stumbled across it on 'normal' Five about a week (or two?) ago, if you haven't seen it then you must. A good film to kick back and relax to, the plot is incidental, just good fun :-)

Hope all heads are well following the weekend :-P

The main problem here is the tiredness, which is as much to do with the shopping trip the next day and my forgetting to have an early night last night.. and probably tonight..

OK I'm gonna head off.. I'll see you all Wednesday probably. Night!
